Land grab for road fix By Esther Lauaki Wyndham council has taken ownership of eight blocks of land at Tarneit and Truganina as it prepares to fix some of Wyndham’s most notorious intersections. Councillors last week gave the green light for the public acquisition of the land surrounding the two intersections at Woods and Dohertys roads, Boundary and Derrimut roads, as well as land for the Leakes Road duplication. Wyndham city design and liveability director Aaron Chiles said each project was “critical to improve road capacity in Tarneit and Truganina”. The council applied to the planning minister last August for an amendment to its planning scheme to include the public acquisition of land for vital projects. The amendment was put out for public comment in October. No submissions were received. Mr Chiles said the land would help provide critical road infrastructure. “Many sections of Wyndham’s roads have reached capacity, and some are carrying far more traffic than they were designed for,” he said. “This is causing traffic jams, delayed bus services and traffic safety issues. “Wyndham’s commuters and freight industries urgently need upgrades to arterial roads, intersections and freeway interchanges. “To this end, council has been upgrading local roads to meet Wyndham’s current and future needs.” The rural intersections of both Woods and Dohertys roads and Boundary and Derrimut roads require traffic signals, while the Leakes Road duplication aims to alleviate congestion. “[Boundary and Derrimut Road] intersection has a poor crash history, but it has not resulted in the intersection being considered a ‘blackspot’ site,” Mr Chiles said. “As part of the Western Road Upgrade project, detours will direct additional traffic through this intersection, further impacting on its safety. “Council is upgrading Boundary Road east of this intersection which is likely to encourage more drivers to use this intersection.” VicRoads manages Derrimut-Hopkins Road, and Wyndham manages Boundary Road. Mayor Josh Gilligan said figures showed there were 59 crashes at Boundary Road in the past five years. He called for VicRoads to fund traffic lights at the dangerous intersection. Late last year, the speed limit was reduced from 80 km/h to 60 km/h on the Derrimut-Hopkins Road between Dohertys Road and Middle Road in Truganina.

The appeal is The Royal Children’s Hospital’s largest annual fundraising event. Ms Collins has also performed the show in London, Macau and New York. “We have a lot of fun doing what we’re doing – it really is about doing what we love doing, and saying we’re not too old for it,” she said. “There is plenty of audience participation in the show. “It really is a fun night with a great storyline – we don’t focus on the sinking.” Titanic: A night to remember will be held at 6pm on Saturday, February 29. Police urge residents to lock up By Alesha Capone Police in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong are warning residents to keep their doors and windows locked. The advice comes after an increase in incidents across the three municipalities, in which offenders have entered homes through unlocked front doors and windows. Divisional Investigation and Response Inspector Rhonda Brown said: “Local intelligence shows there has been an increase in incidents in recent weeks where offenders have
entered homes through unlocked front doors and windows to commit burglaries or steal vehicles.” Inspector Brown also said that Wayward Taskforce detectives “have worked hard to investigate a series of six burglaries that occurred between 19 December and 30 January across Wyndham, Brimbank and Maribyrnong and are committed to holding those responsible to account”. “A group of male teens are believed to have entered homes at night while occupants were asleep to steal keys, cash, credit cards and
electronic goods,” Inspector Brown said. “A number of vehicles were also stolen after they obtained keys from inside the homes.” Taskforce Wayward was established during 2018 to monitor youth offenders involved in aggravated burglaries and home invasions who were deemed at high risk of re-offending. Inspector Brown said that detectives arrested eight male teenagers in Albanvale on Sunday, February 2 in relation to the theft of a motor vehicle in Albanvale. “Four of those males – a 14-year-old from Hoppers Crossing, a 14-year-old from
Albanvale, a 15-year-old from Croydon and a 17-year-old from Deer Park – were remanded and are expected to be charged in relation to the burglaries,” Inspector Brown said. “They will appear at court at a later date.” The inspector said that police were concerned about a trend of burglaries involving “opportunistic break-ins where homes and cars are left unlocked”. “Residents are urged to maintain their home security, always locking their front doors and windows, even if they are home, throughout the day or night,” she said.

Pop in to Point Cook’s pop up park and will act as a venue for cultural events such as Bolly Holi and the Lunar New Year festival. Susan McIntyre and Sara Mitchell, residents of Point Cook and founders of CoLocal, said they were excited for this year’s Pop Up Park to build on last year’s success. This year, a group of students studying for a masters of environment at Melbourne University will join the park’s place-making team, to educate residents on sustainability. It’s time to drop into the Point Cook Pop Up Park. The popular park has returned to Murnong Street, transforming the area into a colourful community space complete with bean bags, shades and lounging spots. The park is hosted by Stockland Point Cook, led by not-for-profit CoLocal and supported by Wyndham City Council, community groups and businesses. The Pop Up Park will feature an eight-week calendar with free events for all ages, including outdoor movies, live music and craft workshops,
Signs have been installed at historic sites along Werribee River, between Shaw’s Bridge and Davis Creek. The signs are part of a project led by the Werribee District Historical Society, the Werribee River Association and Wyndham council. One sign is located where the Mediterranean stone pine (Pinus pinea) was planted by the Chaffey brothers, George and William, about 1888-89 to mark the southern boundary of the Werribee Irrigation Colony. In 2011, local heritage tree researcher Charlie Buttgieg nominated the tree to be added to the Significant Tree Register with the National Trust of Victoria. It has since been registered as a tree of state significance. A Southern blue gum planted by the Chirnside family has also been signposted, as has the Southern Rural Water Diversion Weir, which was built in 1909, the Werribee Irrigation Colony and the Chaffey Irrigation Pump. Another sign has been installed near the site of the former Golden Fleece Inn, which was originally named the Half-Way House. The inn was opened during 1836. Situated on the east bank of the Werribee River, it was used as a stopping place for travellers between Melbourne and Geelong. English elms, believed to be planted during the inn’s period of operation, are still standing. The Hume and Hovell Memorial Tree has also been recognised. Hamilton Hume and William Hovell were the first European explorers to travel overland to Port Phillip from New South Wales.

Werribee Open Range Zoo has launched its Early Morning Savannah Experience, in which groups of up to six people will be able to head out on a tour featuring creatures such as giraffes, rhinos and other African animals. Visitors will be able to see the zoo’s rangers and keepers as they start their day caring for the animals. Ranger Paul Rushworth said early morning was one of the best times to observe the zoo’s free-roaming animals. “It’s such a special time to be out on the savannah,� Mr Rushworth said. “You see such a wide range of morning routines as the different species start their day, exploring and moving
around ‌ No two days are alike out on the savannah. Visitors might see ostrich training one day and a veterinary procedure the next. “The length of this encounter means we also have time to discuss and observe more than the usual Safari Bus tours that run during the day.â€? Guests will also be able watch the lower savannah come to life with a morning tea, before the general public arrive at the zoo. The Early Morning Savannah Experience must be pre-booked. Police arrested a man after an alleged attempted armed robbery in Sanctuary Lakes on Sunday, February 2. Officers were called to a supermarket on Point Cook Road about 10.40pm after reports a man had threatened staff with a knife. A dog squad unit on its way to the supermarket noticed a man fitting the description of the alleged offender near Sneydes Road. A 22 year-old man was arrested and is assisting police with their inquiries.
Safety boost Lights will be installed at Laverton’s AB Shaw Reserve in an effort to deter anti-social behaviour and criminal activity. The lights will be funded through a $10,000 grant from the state government’s Community Safety Fund. Hobsons Bay council will install the lights.

Mick’s mighty century By Alesha Capone The same year that Mick Gastin was born, George V was sitting on Britain’s throne, the Princes Highway was officially opened and the first successful flight took place from Melbourne to Perth. Mr Gastin, who was born in 1920, celebrated his 100th birthday on January 25. Mr Gastin and his wife Margaret have four children, 12 grandchildren and a great-grandchild on the way. The couple have been married for more than seven decades. They said they moved to Hoppers Crossing about 20 years ago, to live across the road from one of their daughters. Mr Gastin served as treasurer of the Hoppers Bowls Club for about 12 years, where he was also a keen player known as “Mighty Mick Gastin�. The club presented Mr Gastin with a special trophy marking his 100th birthday last month. In his younger days, Mr Gastin was a keen sportsman, who “did a bit of long-distance running� and served as secretary of a football club in Cohuna, where he is also a life member. He said there was no great secret to living to 100 years old. “I pray to God and my wife looks after me,� he said. Mr Gastin celebrated his birthday with relatives and close friends at the Hoppers Club. Margaret’s youngster sister Mary, who is a Catholic nun, was among the people who attended. “Margaret’s family has produced three priests and two nuns,� Mr Gastin said. Mr Gastin said he also enjoyed using his iPad to surf the internet and look on Facebook. “You can Google things – it’s amazing what you can learn,� he said.

Drivers nabbed in road blitz A four-day police operation conducted last month resulted in 62 driving offences being detected in Wyndham. During Operation Amity, which was carried across four days including the Australia Day long weekend, police also recorded 234 driving offences in Brimbank, 62 in Melton, 30 in Maribyrnong and 29 in Hobsons Bay. More than 6300 traffic offences were detected across the state during the operation. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy said it was disappointing to see people make poor decisions on the road. “No one is invincible, and that’s unfortunately the hardest lesson people learn,� Assistant Commissioner Murphy said. “Until the message sinks in for everyone, we’ll continue educating the community and enforcing where possible.� Assistant Commissioner Murphy said despite the results, it was pleasing to see the number of Victorian drug driving incidents drop to 141, compared to 165 during last year’s operation. “Drink and drug driving continue to be major factors when it comes to road trauma and while there’s still a long way to go, it’s promising to see a decline in the number of drug drivers on our roads,� she said. Assistant Commissioner Murphy praised the behaviour of drivers who stayed safe on the roads across the Australia Day weekend.

Prevention a key to good health By Alesha Capone The number of potentially preventable hospitalisations in Wyndham has increased by thousands of cases across five years, according to a new report. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) last week released a report into how many potentially preventable hospitalisations (PPHs) were recorded across the nation between 2012-13 and 2017-18. PPHs are admissions to hospital that could potentially have been avoided through
preventive care such as vaccinations, or disease management, such as treatment of infections or management of chronic conditions. The report found that one in 15 hospital admissions (6.6 per cent) in Australia were classified as potentially preventable in 2017-18. Within Wyndham, there were 5773 PPH cases recorded in this period, compared to 3193 five years earlier. This included 918 cases of iron deficient anemia (compared to 289 five years earlier), 542 cases of diabetes complications (compared to 307), 450 cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (compared to
299) and 420 cases of cellulitis (compared to 255). AIHW spokesman Richard Jukes said that across Australia, people aged 65 years and over accounted for 46 per cent of all PPHs, and children aged under 14 made up 13 per cent. The most common cause (10 per cent) of potentially preventable hospitalisations was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. “Classifying a hospitalisation as ‘potentially preventable’ does not mean that the hospitalisation itself was unnecessary, however, it indicates that management at an earlier stage may have prevented the patient’s condition
worsening to the point of hospitalisation,� Mr Jukes said. “It’s important to note that a higher rate of PPH doesn’t always indicate a less effective health system, but PPH are useful for identifying variations between different groups, and understanding health inequalities.� He said that nationally, the rate of PPHs in 2017–18 was about 2000 per 100,000 people. “Rates were highest in the Northern Territory (around 5800 people per 100,000), and lowest in the Australian Capital Territory (around 2150 per 100,000),� Mr Jukes said.

key tools in my life that helped me navigate the ups and lows of life�. Avalon slashes parking fees By Alesha Capone Avalon Airport has announced that it will slash its parking fees by 25 per cent across all short term and long term parking areas for the next two months. The news comes after Melbourne Airport raised fees by up to 25 per cent for hundreds of its parking spaces. Avalon’s chief executive Justin Giddings said: “There are many great, but unknown benefits that come with flying at Avalon Airport. “Not only is parking cheaper, it’s also more
convenient. “All parking – both long term and short term – are located right outside the terminals, just metres away from check-in.” During the two months, parking in Avalon’s short term area will cost $4 for 15-30 minutes, $7 for 45 minutes-1 hour, $36 for 4-24 hours, $96 for seven days and $149 for 14 days. In the long term area, parking will cost $29 for 4-24 hours, $66 for 7 days and $99 for 14 days. Avalon Airport’s 25 per cent off parking will conclude at midnight on Tuesday, March 31.
To receive the discount drivers will need to exit the car park during that period. The airport also announced last week that it will become the first in Australia to provide self-service check-in kiosks and bag drops for travellers with Elenium Automation. Avalon and Elenium have announced a partnership in which the airport will invest in self-service and automation technology in the terminal to replace manual check-in desks. Avalon Airport will adopt Elenium’s full suite of automation technologies, including self-service check-in kiosks, bag drop
technology, the CUSS (Common User Self Service) platform and ‘Flight Deck’ software. This will allow Avalon’s operational team to have an overview of events across their entire kiosk and bag drop portfolio and to reslove issues before they occur. Sixteen self-service kiosks, which can be moved around the airport for use by different airlines as needed, will be used at Avalon Airport. Step up for Rotary event Residents are being urged to put their best foot forward and sign up for The Wyndham Rotary Fun Run or Walk, to be held next month. This year marks the 13th annual fun run and walk held by the Rotary Club. Rotary Club member Eddie Szatkowski said the funds raised during this year’s run and walk would be used to fit-out a sensory room in the Werribee Mercy Hospital’s Mental Health Unit. Participants will be able to run a distance of five or 10 kilometres, or walk four or eight kilometres. There will also be a 400 metre event for children aged six and below, and 1500 metre event for youngsters aged 12 and below. Mechelle Lane has participated in all of the fun runs, except for one year when she had an operation. “I actually enjoy seeing more walkers and social runners running, and it’s great to see
more families participating,” Mrs Lane said. Another long-time entrant into the fun run is Kate Scholtens-Brown, an event ambassador for parkrun Australia and president of the Point Cook Runners. “It’s really cute to see the kids in the 1500 metres,” she said. Geelong man Andrew Tunne, a vision-impaired athlete, will also be participating in the fun run. He will be accompanied by a guide, who will help him navigate the course. Cash boost for centre By Esther Lauaki
Living well with diabetes Wyndham residents living with diabetes are invited to a series of seminars to learn more about the illness. The Living Well with Diabetes Victoria event, on Saturday, March 14 at the Encore Events Centre, includes two seminars tailored to the needs of people living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Both events will cover the latest research, nutrition, emotional health, options for continuous glucose monitoring, eye care and general wellbeing. Bob Fairclough, convenor of the Werribee Diabetes Peer Support Group, said participants will have the chance to meet leading health professionals and others with the condition. Mr Fairclough will speak about the importance of peer support for people living with diabetes. “I have lived with type 2 diabetes for over 20 years. With the support of Diabetes Victoria and my local support group, I have been able to manage my diabetes,” Mr Fairclough said. “I have achieved many things professionally and personally while living with diabetes.” In the Wyndham local government area, more than 13,000 people live with diabetes and are registered with the National Diabetes Services Scheme. The vast majority (84.2 per cent) of those residents live with type 2 diabetes, while 7.4 per cent live with type 1.
A new children’s centre at Tarneit West is a step closer thanks to a state funding boost. The project will receive $4 million through the government’s Children’s Facilities Capital Fund and the Growing Suburbs Fund. Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan welcomed the grants, which he said would help to “build the infrastructure our growing community needs”. “Once complete, this centre will provide the fast-growing suburb of Tarneit with access to early education and care services, including kindergarten rooms, maternal and child health services, consulting rooms, a gathering space for the community, and programs to suit all ages,” Cr Gilligan said. “A key component in the design of this building is sustainability – and we will ensure that we are minimising the negative environmental impact at all stages, from design, to construction.” Urban futures portfolio holder Intaj Khan said the centre was an example of council planning ahead, delivering infrastructure in line with residential development, so that services are available when the community needs them. “Population forecasts predict that by 2031, Tarneit’s population will grow by 53,000 residents to 75,000,” Cr Khan said. “It’s important that we have the services and infrastructure in place before we experience this population boom.” Main: Parliamentary secretary Sonya Kilkenny and Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly at the site. School is cool for family Going to school is a family affair for Sarah Peter and her twins, Jordan and Lachlan. Mrs Peters is an office administrator at Baden Powell College’s Tarneit P-9 campus, where Lachlan and Jordan started grade prep this year. Mrs Peters said she began working in the school’s office as a trainee during 2009, before being offered an ongoing role the next year. She went on maternity leave in 2014 and started back at work this year. “They [the college] wanted me to come back and luckily, I have good bosses, and they wanted the twins as well,� Mrs Peters said. “What I love most is that the ladies I work with are like mums, they are like family.

Green ambitions get big tick By Esther Lauaki Wyndham is among the best performing councils in Australia in driving down emissions, a study has found. The Net Zero Momentum Tracker Local Government Sector report, which assessed Australia’s 57 largest councils, found Wyndham was among the few making comprehensive commitments to reduce emissions to zero by 2050. The report, produced by ClimateWorks Australia, was the third in a series of studies
tracking climate commitments made by major Australian companies, organisations and governments. Wyndham council, which was used as a case study in the report, has been running its Large-Scale Solar and Lighting the West programs for the past five years. The programs resulted in council exceeding its emissions reduction target for 2018-19 by 12 per cent to 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, compared to 25,000 tonnes the year before. holder Heather Marcus said Wyndham council was one of the most proactive in Australia when it came to sustainability. “With street lights and electricity output accounting for 82 per cent of council’s greenhouse gas emissions, these programs play an essential role in helping us reach our long-term goal of being carbon neutral,” Cr Marcus said. “Wyndham city is not just planning for sustainability – we’re acting on and exceeding our green ambitions.” Other proposals by Wyndham council to
drive down emissions include a community bulk buy program for discounted solar panels, battery storage and energy efficient appliances; grants and support for community energy projects; and education programs to inform the community and businesses about energy bill reduction and solar power. Hundreds of children and teenagers living in Wyndham are spending four hours or more per day looking at digital screens, according to new research. Specsavers has used statistics from a research project it conducted in October last year and data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics to create a profile of the screen time habits of children across the nation. The numbers showed that out of Wyndham’s population of residents aged 19 and below, 1526 (equivalent to 14 per cent) spend four hours or more looking on screens every day. The World Health Organisation recommends that children aged between two to five years spend a maximum of one hour per day looking at a screen. The Specsavers report found that in Victoria, children spend an average of 2.48 hours on screens daily. The data revealed that Victorian children are spending most of their screen time at home in

NBN rolls out across Wyndham Copper phone and internet services across Wyndham are about to be cut for good as the NBN rollout takes over. Decommissioning of the old copper-based services started this week in Wyndham Vale, Truganina and Point Cook where nearly 8000 premises are transitioning to the NBN access network. Werribee services will be progressively replaced by the NBN access network from February 22, followed by Tarneit from March 14. Head of NBN local Victoria Matt Evans said residents would have received a letter advising them of the disconnection date with details on how to prepare for the transition. “Many homes and businesses have already made the switch to a service over the NBN access network, this is the final stage of the transition to the NBN access network and brings the community closer to fully embracing the benefits of fast broadband,” Mr Evans said. He said residents and business owners were encouraged to contact their phone and internet provider to find out if their services were at risk of disconnection and talk about plans that meet their speed and data usage needs. Letters written by American schoolchildren to Australian firefighters are being distributed to members of Wyndham’s fire stations. Tarneit woman Irene Hannah said her son Peter is a firefighter at the Tri-county Mansfield fire station in New Jersey, which has a “sister” relationship with the Mansfield fire brigade in Victoria. When Peter visited Australia last month, he brought 10 letters from pupils who attend Mansfield Elementary School in New Jersey with him. Peter’s daughters Kayleigh and Jessica are students at the school. Mrs Hannah said children at the school, including Kayleigh’s grade 4 classmates, wanted to thank the Australian firefighters for their efforts in the recent bushfire. The pupils wrote letters and decorated them with artwork, for Peter to bring to Australia. “It was the students who asked the teacher if they could do it,” Mrs Hannah said. Mrs Hannah said she presented some of the letters to firefighters from the Truganina station last week, and that she was also planning on giving some of the letters to firefighters based in Hoppers Crossing and Tarneit. She said she is planning to post some of the letters to the Mansfield fire brigade. Volunteers from all the stations helped to battle the bushfires which burned through Victoria and New South Wales in December and January. “I think it just reconnects people from so far away, it just opens the door to people caring, no matter where they are from,” Mrs Hannah said. Mrs Hannah said she would take photos of the Australian firefighters reading the letters, to send back to the US school pupils.

Point Cook wildlife rescuers are mustering up towels to include in triage kits for animals injured in the bushfires that swept the state. The kits, which will be used and distributed by Zoos Victoria, will include regular-sized bath towels, face washers and hand towels. Wildlife volunteer Marcus Stadener, who is co-ordinating the towel drive, last week put out a call for help on the Point Cook Wildlife Care Facebook page. “These items can be second hand but should not be too worn, no holes and no frayed edges – think of the sort of items you’d like to be snuggled into if you were burnt or singed,”

The long-awaited entry of girls to Werribee Technical School took place yesterday morning almost without notice. This was a welcome anti-climax after the heated argument of 1978 when a group of parents waged a hot campaign to gain entry for their daughters for the 1979 year.
Point Cook will no longer be Australia’s “City of the Future” according to Geelong Regional Commission Director for Economic Development, Al McLean. Reports that the 800ha site at Point Cook was a viable contender for the multi-million dollar project were dashed following a joint feasibility study by Anderson Consulting and Kenhill Engineering Pty Ltd.
Wyndham council has called on the community to help rescue Werribee’s Glen Orden Wetlands. Continued drought conditions and a lack of maintenance have conspired to dry out the wetlands, threatening the good work completed at the site since its opening more than six years ago.

Why did you want to volunteer? I wanted to volunteer because I had nothing to do while I waited for my permanent residency to be approved. During the year that it took to be approved I couldn’t work. I stumbled upon a Friends of Werribee Park brochure for the volunteer programs.

What’s the best part of your role? The best part of my role is being able to dress up visitors in Victorian clothing and tell them the history of the mansion.
What’s your connection to Wyndham? My grandparents have lived in Wyndham for quite a while and it is where my dad and uncles grew up.
How long have you lived in the area? I only started living here back in August 2018, I moved from St. Louis, Missouri in the United States.
What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about art and history. I’ve been volunteering at the Werribee Mansion since June last year.
What other hats do you wear in the Wyndham community? As well as volunteering I now have two jobs. I work most of the time as the cafe manager at Ultimate You Hoppers Crossing but I also help clean Hoppers Crossing indoor sports. What’s the quirkiest thing about you? The quirkiest thing about me is I love to wear clothes with crazy patterns and colours. What do you love about Wyndham? The thing I love about Wyndham is that I’m finally able to be with my family.

SPORT Freeman comes through for Werribee James Freeman is the man for the big moments for Werribee in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The all-rounder’s figures do not always jump off the scorecard, but his impact with bat and ball in crucial times in games is almost unmatched. Freeman makes his moments in the spotlight count, whether it be with building pressure with his pace bowling or team-boosting middle order batting. In the top of the table clash with Altona at JK Grant Reserve on Saturday, Freeman once again played a crucial role, steadying the innings with 39 in a 65-run partnership with Adam Alifraco (25 not out), who was just as vital on this day. Chasing a tricky 138 for victory on a tough wicket to score on, Werribee’s innings was at a crossroads at 4-64 when Freeman and Alifraco formed a partnership. Any hope the ladder leader Altona had of
winning the game dissipated from that point on. Werribee cruised to the target with 4.2 overs to spare. “The game was in the balance at that point and it could’ve gone either way, but those two put on a good partnership to get us a comfortable win in the end,” Tigers captain-coach Tim O’Brien said. “James Freeman play another magnificent knock for us. “He was scoring all the time. “And that was the role we wanted Adam Alifraco to do for us. “Coming in at No. 6, just turn the strike over.” Shaun Dean was the other standout with the bat for Werribee, making 33. Earlier in the day, Werribee’s bowlers made it difficult for Altona to get a wriggle on. Jonathan Burton set the tone for the Tigers with a tight 2-11 off nine overs.
Jack Budd bowled in the tough period of the innings when Altona was trying to up the run rate and claimed 3-43. Second-placed Werribee has moved to within six points of Altona with two rounds to play. The Tigers will host Balwyn in a two-day game at Chirnside Park starting on Saturday. Meanwhile, Hoppers Crossing tumbled out of the top six after a dismal loss away to Noble Park. Set 217 for victory, the Cats were bowled out for just 91. Aces clinch first ABL title By Lance Jenkinson The title drought is over for the Melbourne Aces. For the first time in franchise history, the Aces stand on top of the mountain as the Australian Baseball League champions. The Claxton Shield will return to Victoria for a record-extending 23rd time. Victory was achieved with a 2-0 championship series sweep over Adelaide Giants. It was a wild series at times. It literally nearly came to blows between the two sets of players at one point. Cooler heads prevailed and it will best be remembered for excellence on the diamond. In his acceptance speech, Aces manager Jon Deeble acknowledged the opposition and how hard they made his side work to get their hands on the famous shield. “Every time we played you, you battled your arses off,” Deeble said. 32 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY Wednesday, 12 February, 2020
“You’re a really tough team to beat. “We were still panicking in the ninth inning [of game two]. “You guys never give up. “You’ve got a young team, we’ve been on that other side a couple of years ago and we know it hurts, but you guys have got an outstanding team.” The scene was set for a tasty series in a fiery game one in Melbourne on Friday night. It was a game that had it all: a streaker, a bench clearing altercation and a walk-off run. The Aces prevailed 4-3 in a tight and tense game at the Melbourne Ballpark. Allan de San Miguel, featuring in his last series for the Aces before retiring to local baseball, blasted the ball to left field for the game tying run in the ninth. Shane Robinson then stepped up and threaded the eye of a needle between the Giants third baseman and the foul line to drive in the Aces winning run. It was just one of many significant moments produced by Robinson,
who was adjudged the most valuable player of the ABL Championship Series. Robinson went 5-for-10 in the series with three RBIs and a home run. Darin Downs did a power of work as the Aces starting pitcher in game one, going six innings with seven strikeouts. While they had the upper hand in the series, Melbourne Aces had to clinch the title the hard way, on enemy soil in Adelaide. Once the Aces took the lead in the third inning, there was no turning back. The red hot Aces led all the way for a 6-2 game two win to take the series. The Aces bats caught fire between the third and fifth innings, piling on six runs in that time. Robinson and Delmon Young went big for the Aces with home runs. Four Aces – Robinson, Young, de San Miguel and Nate Samson – picked up two hits each. Wes Helsabeck did the bulk of the work on the mound for the Aces, throwing 7.2 innings, giving up just two runs.

However, the Giants were able to manufacture runs in a variety of ways, doing enough to put up a winning number on the scoreboard. “We didn’t play our best game,” Giants coach John Curnow said. “There was a lot of scrapping, putting the ball in play, putting the pressure on them to get on base, a few walks. “The guys did really well for the windy conditions.” Heading into the ninth inning, Werribee was staring down the barrel of defeat with a three-run deficit. It all came together for the Giants with a number of tough at-bats to clinch a stunning come-from-behind win. Andrew Maki, Justin Gill and Ryan Balzer all found a way on base to give Oliver Box the opportunity to win it at the end. Box worked the count before driving in the winning run. Balzer crossed home plate and there was no challenge from the Wolves defence. Wes De Jong did the bulk of the work on the mound for Werribee with seven innings, while Trent Pantalleresco pitched the other two. Uskok passes his first test with Western United

It was a baptism of fire for Tomi Uskok in his Western United debut. Uskok slotted into a United defence that was battered with shot after shot by the Newcastle Jets attackers last start. The post-game stats showed the Jets had 27 shots to four, but the United defence kept a clean sheet, thanks to its stellar defence, a stand out game by goalkeeper Filip Kurto and a whole lot of luck. Uskok, a former Melbourne Knights and Sydney United player who had played for Central Coast Mariners previously in a brief A-League stint, could be proud of his first-up display for United. While he would not want to be as frequently under the pump as he was against the Jets, Uskok showed he can handle the best of what the A-League has to throw his way. “There were definitely good players out there, physical and aggressive,” Uskok said. “It’s always a challenge playing against different sorts of attributes and different sorts of players.
“They pose another challenge, but, yeah, I’m learning every day.” Uskok, a January transfer window signing, arrived at Western United underdone because he was in the middle of his NPL pre-season training campaign. The 28-year-old still managed to last 74 minutes in oppressive heat before he was subbed out. With a number of key defensive injuries, Uskok’s impact has been much needed and looks to be a handy acquisition. “I guess it’s difficult coming in when everyone’s in-season and full conditioned,” Uskok said. “I’m coming off a pre-season halfway through and probably haven’t played a competitive game for four months, it’s a challenge, but it’s just about working hard and trying to build up to a point where you’re comfortable and the coaching staff are backing me in, so that’s good.” The transition from Sydney to Melbourne was easier for Uskok than most.
His family lives in this city and he is familiar with the area, having grown up in the western suburbs. “I’ve got my parents here,” Uskok said. “Knowing where everything is, knowing the area and where I am definitely makes it a lot easier to settle.” Uskok will be hoping to get a start for Western United in its crucial clash with Brisbane Roar at Mars Stadium in Ballarat on Sunday from 4pm. Having beaten the Roar, coached by Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler, earlier in the season, United can go in with a little bit of confidence. “It gives you confidence as a team, but every game is different,” Uskok said. Meanwhile, the A-League and W-League clubs will be celebrating the annual Play Football round this weekend, a campaign that encourages junior football participation and registration across the country. Menadue is revved up By Lance Jenkinson Speed machine Connor Menadue is ready to rev up his engines for Werribee in the Victorian Football League. One of the prized recruits of the VFL off-season, Menadue is an exciting addition to the already strong Werribee squad that has designs of going all the way in 2020. Taking the step back from the AFL, where he was a part of a glorious period with Richmond for the past five years, Menadue has found it to be a welcoming environment at Werribee, which has helped with his transition. The 23-year-old former Spotswood and Western Jets junior is back to where it all began playing football in the western suburbs. Even in his short time with Werribee, Menadue can see some parallels between his new club and Richmond. One of the strengths of Richmond was its camaraderie from top to bottom and Menadue can sense a similar togetherness among the Werribee team. “My whole five years at Richmond were just unreal,” he said. “I got to live my dream and I’ve got some mates for life. “Just to be involved with two AFL premierships and last year with the VFL
premiership, it was an unreal experience and I’ll never forget my time over there. “There were no groups, everyone just got along and played for each other. That’s actually what I’ve seen a lot of at Werribee, which is really exciting, the same sort of strong culture and playing for each other.” Menadue is highly rated for his breakneck speed and skill. A versatile player, he can be used in a number of positions, but has mainly played as a half back flanker or wingman. He is champing at the bit for the VFL practice matches to begin to see where he will fit into the mix. “We haven’t really done any real match simulation yet, so it’s hard to know the positioning of all the players,” Menadue said. “I’d say I’ll be a half back and hopefully go through the middle, but Choco [Werribee coach Mark Williams] might have other ideas, so we’ll have to wait and see.” One of the main attractions for Menadue was reuniting with Williams, who was an assistant coach during his time at Richmond. Menadue felt comfortable under the tutelage of Williams and believes the AFL premiership coach can help him improve to the point where he can make a return to the AFL system.
“He’s a great coach,” Menadue said. “He just wants to get the most out of you and whatever is best for you, he’ll do for you.” Above all, Menadue can see a Werribee team that is going places. He wants to be part of a successful VFL side and believes Werribee is on the right trajectory. “They had a really strong year last year,” Menadue said. “I want to be playing finals in a really good team and they’re showing in their training and with their results last year that that’s what they are.” Menadue will also be targeting the AFL mid-season draft for a quick return to the professional ranks. He cited Marlion Pickett’s incredible rise from state league player to Richmond AFL premiership star last year as an example of a successful transition. “I want to have a good strong start to the season and see what happens with the mid-season draft,” Menadue said. “I got to see it first hand with Marlion Pickett, going from not expecting to play at all during the year to VFL and not just playing but dominating and getting his crack at AFL level. “It shows there’s different chances now, which is good.”

Best case scenario, the Centurions can stay alive in the finals race with a win, or worst case, be sucked into the relegation zone with a loss. Infotainment Koleos gets Renault’s latest R-Link 2 system for its infotainment technology. The premium Intens model displays onto an 8.7-inch tablet-style portrait touchscreen with the Life and Zen getting a 7.0-inch portrait screen.
Getting in and out is comfortable without too much bending or head scraping. The driver’s seat is wide, supportive and comfortable. The steering wheel is both tilt and reach adjustable. Koleos is a capable enough vehicle with good, but unexciting, performance. We found it needed a bit of urging to climb steepish hills without losing momentum although there is a pre-set manual mode to assist the CVT. Suspension is a little harsh and relatively firm without making the ride uncomfortable. Steering is light and direct. On the motorway segment of our test route the Koleos cruised comfortably despite its fairly modest outputs. Fuel consumption is listed at 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres for the Zen. We averaged 9.2 L/100 km during our week in the Zen, acceptable enough for a fairly large SUV.

It’s been a long journey for the Nissan Patrol since its inception, almost 70 years ago, taking it up to the big boys of the 4x4 market, especially the Toyota Land Cruiser. Now the rugged Nissan continues along the slip road to a quieter life with its MY20 model. In 2013, the Patrol took on the role of a flagship with a big brother in the shape of ST-L, Ti and Ti-L variants. Last year, the ST-L was retired, leaving the two petrol-only options carrying the load. For 2020, the remaining pair have been given a new look, plus a range of Nissan intelligent active safety features as standard equipment for an extra $3000 apiece, up to respective prices of $75,990 and $91,990, plus on-road costs. Both the Nissan Ti (the test car) and Ti-L, have retained the robust tradition of the Patrol, that of a genuine off-roader / tough tow truck.

Driving
Styling A modern makeover front and back has given a sleeker look to both Ti and Ti-L. Both feature new fender panels, front grille and LED lamps. LED lights front and back have been brightened – 52 LEDs per headlight, plus LED foglamps, and a total of 44 out back. New boomerang-shaped tail-lights and chrome nameplate are designed to improve visibility at night. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels have also been updated and wrapped in tall 265 / 70 tyres, giving the ability to iron out surface defects on the bitumen.

Safety Both grades now include Intelligent Emergency Braking, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert as standard. While already standard on the Ti-L, the Ti has taken up Intelligent Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Intervention, blind Spot Warning, plus Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention.
The relatively new V8 engine delivers 298 kW of power and 560 Nm of torque, with 90 per cent of the latter on call from just 1600 rpm. This is enough to get the 3500 kg GVM hulk under way surprisingly sharpish and makes overtaking a breeze with the engine seemingly never in danger of running out of revs. Power is put to ground through an advanced seven-speed automatic and a sophisticated, electronically controlled, all mode 4x4 system, with settings for Auto, 4H, 4L, diff lock and hill descent control. The centre console mounted-control knob also incorporates Patrol’s terrain select system, featuring on road, snow, sand and rock settings for the serious off-road adventurer. There were no surprises with the heavyweight’s fuel consumption which averaged 16 litres per 100 kilometres while cruising and topped 20 litres per hundred in heavy city going. Owners can expect a more comfortable drive than previously thanks to a suspension retuning with improved dampers that have been enhanced to provide more dampening at a higher piston speed. This gives better on-road ride comfort.
