Quest for excellence The numbers add up at Lumen Christi Catholic Primary School in Point Cook. Nineteen pupils from the school received prizes in the Mathematical Association of Victoria’s annual Maths Talent Quest earlier this year, including 11 youngsters who were awarded high distinctions or distinctions. Nine-year-old pupils Camilo and Ambrose said they were “surprised” and “very happy” to place first in the competition, in the category of year 3 group projects. The pair entered a project called The Soccer Ball, for which they calculated that soccer balls are “truncated icosahedrons” with 60 vertices, 32 faces and 90 edges. Their project went on to win a first place at the National Mathematics Talent Quest last month. Ambrose said he and Camilo decided on the idea for their project because they both liked soccer, and hope to become professional players in the future. “It was pretty easy because we used a lot of strategy, but there was a lot of work so we took a long time,” Camilo said. Last year, the boys also placed first in the state Maths Talent Quest for a project in which they counted all the squares on a chess board. AMBROSE AND CAMILO

$20m aged care plan By Alesha Capone A planning application for a six to eight-storey aged care and retirement home in Werribee has been lodged with Wyndham council. The $20 million development, which also includes a medical centre and food and beverage premises, would be built at 74-76 Cottrell Street and 108-112 Werribee Street – opposite the Racecourse Hotel. The application has been lodged on behalf of Heritage Care, a residential aged care provider which operates in Victoria and New South Wales. A town planning document included with

the application said the development would include 41 independent living apartments, 132 residential aged care rooms, two café tenancies at ground level, including the opportunity for outdoor seating/dining towards the intersection of Werribee Street North and Stawell Street. The application also included plans for allied health facilities at the ground and first floor levels. A total of 129 car parking spaces will be provided, including 47 spaces for the medical centre, 41 spaces for the residential independent living units and 39 spaces for residential aged care.
According to the application, a further 43 bicycle parking spaces will be provided, along with communal spaces, multi-purpose, dining and lounge facilities. The proposal comprises a podium of two levels, with two “tower” elements on top. The northern “tower” would comprise a U-shaped aged care facility of four additional levels, which would total six storeys in height (21.8 metres). The southern tower would comprise independent living apartments of six additional levels, totalling eight storeys in height (28.2 metres). A traffic report, prepared by Traffi x Group,
says the proposed development site is located within the Werribee Principal Activity Centre, which provides access to a wide range of everyday services such as supermarkets, banks and restaurants. The site is also very well serviced by public transport. “Notwithstanding that, we do not expect any material on-street parking demands to be generated by the proposal, we note that casual observations of the surrounding area suggest that on-street parking is under-utilised and that any potential demands could be accommodated on-street without significant impact to the surrounding uses,” the report stated.

Copper thefts hit commuters By Timna Jacks, The Age A spate of copper thefts has hit the railways in Melbourne’s west, forcing thousands of commuters onto buses on four out of seven mornings in recent weeks. Thieves stealing lucrative copper cables and vandalising the railways near Laverton caused Altona Loop services to be suspended or altered for more than 15 hours in recent weeks. Commuters using the Altona Loop during morning peak hour have been plagued by

40-minute delays and forced to catch buses. Nearly 50 buses have been ordered while trains were down on Thursday and Monday the previous week week and Saturday and Thursday last week. The thefts are believed to have occurred at dawn.
Metro’s chief operating officer Catherine Baxter confirmed there had been four incidents of cable theft near Laverton this month. “This is a completely unnecessary disruption for our Werribee line passengers who are trying to get to work, school and appointments,” Ms Baxter said. “The vandals are putting themselves in serious danger by committing these crimes – as they are in a live electrical environment where trains run at regular frequency. “Metro’s Network Security and Surveillance
team is patrolling the area every night to bring these vandals to justice, and spare our passengers any further disruptions.” A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the thefts were under investigation. “Officers from the Transit Safety Division are investigating a number of thefts of copper cabling from … the Altona Loop area,” the spokeswoman said. “Each reported incident is thoroughly investigated … heavy penalties apply to anyone convicted of this type of offending.”

Young singer-songwriter Ag Johnson has released her debut single, under a program aimed at helping emerging musicians who live in outer suburban areas. Earlier this year, 20-year-old Johnson was one of eight music artists selected to participate in The GRID Series, which stands for Grass Roots Indie Development. The program included a weekend of one-on-one mentoring with music industry professionals and a fully-produced song recorded at Box Hill Institute’s Sing Sing East studios. Johnson’s song, titled Beauty Within, was launched in Werribee last month. Johnson collaborated with rapper NOMAD, another participant in the Grid Series, for the track. Johnson, who has previously lived in Werribee and Pakenham but now calls Cranbourne home, said she has loved music since she was a child.

Youth keep watch More than 40 young people from across the west will come together to perform a show in Footscray, St Albans and Werribee. The concerts will bring together Western Edge Youth Arts (WEYA) community youth theatre ensembles, which are based in each of the three suburbs. The show, The Watching, will include three sections which link together, as a reflection on the communal experience of viewing, with scenes as varied as period drama, a supernatural thriller and a mafia noir-themed section. Truganina resident Amarachi Okorom, 22, will perform in the show. Okorom, who is also a spoken word poet and writer, said The Watching was also a “subtle commentary on representation in the media�.
More than 35 firefighters attended a factory blaze in Dohertys Road, Laverton North about 7.56pm on October 28. Fifty people were evacuated from the premises. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Okorom said cast members come from many backgrounds and cultures and are featured in posters promoting the show. �I think people would want to watch even just looking at the poster, it’s something new and I feel like the people in it ‌ they may hopefully feel represented,� she said. A 33-year-old Point Cook man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after an alleged road rage incident on October 24. Police said two male drivers were involved in a physical altercation after two cars collided on Saltwater Promenade about 8.15pm. Poetic pupil wins medal Grade 6 pupil Kristen has received an award for a poem she penned exploring the theme of reconciliation. Kristen, who attends Corpus Christi Primary School in Werribee, was one of 20 pupils in Victoria recognised with a NAIDOC medal of excellence award, during NAIDOC Week earlier this year. While NAIDOC Week celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements, it also runs a school initiative, which aims to provide children across Australia with a greater understanding of the importance of friendship and cultural diversity. The poetry competition which Kristen entered was part of these activities. Her poem includes the lines: “But we’ll make a change and unite as one, so Australia can be a place for everyone, we’ll work together, we’ll be kind, we’ll care about each other, and leave those bad days behind.” She also wrote: “We’ll show equality and we won’t discriminate, we will love not hate,
because being together, is always better.” The judging panel for the NAIDOC schools’ poetry competition included patrons of Koori Kids, Aboriginal elders and other members of the community. Corpus Christi’s acting principal Viv Adamko presented Kristen with her NAIDOC Medal of Excellence. New school hub launched By Alesha Capone A $10.9 million upgrade has been opened at Manor Lakes P-12 College. Werribee MP Tim Pallas last month inspected the upgrade, which includes a new Health Hub and Secondary Centre to provide teaching, IT and staff work spaces, breakout spaces for students, a new canteen, new toilet blocks and changerooms. During his visit, Mr Pallas announced $660,000 in maintenance funding for Thomas Chirnside Primary School and Werribee Primary School.

Two-hour parking will replace one-hour limits in most parts of Werribee’s city centre from this month. New signage is already installed and the rollout is expected to be in full effect from November 28. The changes are part of the Werribee City Centre Parking Strategy, which aims to give people more time to shop, socialise and work in the heart of the precinct. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said it was important to give customers longer to enjoy the centre’s 526 businesses. “Business owners told us that customers wanted more time to visit the shops, cafes and visit the broad range of services on offer right here in the city centre,â€? Cr Shaw said. “There are also many social benefits for visitors, for example enjoying longer lunches at the variety of ‌ vibrant cafes and restaurants and not having to rush back to their car. “Many people felt the hour-parking in the city centre was too restrictive, so we made this extension to the time limit.â€? Train pain as punctuality slips By Alesha Capone The state opposition has labelled Metro’s performance on the Werribee line for September as “shocking�. Speaking in state parliament last month, opposition Public Transport spokesman David Davis said the punctuality rate on the Werribee line was 86.6 per cent during September. According to statistics from Metro, this means 4505 trains out of 5334 Werribee services arrived on time during the month (compared to a punctuality rate of 91.3 per cent
during September last year, in which 4723 out of 5245 Werribee trains arrived on time). In September this year, the only train lines with worse punctuality rates than Werribee were the Frankston line, on 83.2 per cent, the Cranbourne line, on 84.5 per cent, and the Pakenham line, on 85.3 per cent. The Glen Waverley line recorded the best punctuality of 97.1 per cent. A total of 59 trains were cancelled on the Werribee line in September, while 42 ran short (less carriages than usual) and 47 bypassed some stations.
Mr Davis said that in September, 10 of the 16 Melbourne train lines did not meet their performance targets. Train operator Metro issued a statement which said they were working with the Department of Transport to improve reliability. “In September, track, signalling and electrical upgrades, tree clearing, graffiti removal and bridge maintenance works were carried out across the network, including on the Frankston, Sandringham, Belgrave, Lilydale, Mernda, Hurstbridge, Craigieburn and Upfield lines,� the statement said.
There was also more than 320 incidents involving police operations, trespassers and near misses in September, which delayed a total of 955 trains. Of these, 160 incidents involved people illegally walking on the rail line. Department of Transport head of transport services, Jeroen Weimar, said: “Metro Trains is expected to deliver a train service that Melburnians can rely on and there were a number of times during September that did not happen. “Metro needs to continue to work hard to improve its performance.�
New school for Harpley The name of a new primary school set to open in Werribee during 2021, has been released. St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School will be located on the corner of Treeve Parkway and Fairhall Avenue, within the Harpley estate. The school’s name honours the history of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, who have been involved in the parish of Werribee since 1906. The Josephite sisters were sent to Werribee to administer at St Andrew’s school by Australia’s first saint, Mary MacKillop. Stage one construction of St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, valued at $5.7 million, is set to start this month. The stage one construction will cater for 200 students, with eight learning spaces over two storeys as well as specialist learning areas and administration facilities. In the future, the school will be completed across a further two stages and will be able to accommodate about 500 students.
The search for the school foundation principal will also begin this year. The Harpley estate, located near Bulban Road and McGrath Road, is a 435-hectare master-planned community. It is estimated the estate will become home to about 12,000 residents upon completion. The estate also has a proposed government primary school, proposed government secondary school and a private P-12 school slated for construction in the future. The Harpley Town Centre is expected to deliver 8000 square metres of retail and 2000 square metres of non-retail commercial space. Cop pleads guilty to fraud A senior Victoria Police officer has pleaded guilty to 10 fraud offences, including dishonestly obtaining six properties and rorting Centrelink, following a major investigation by the state’s corruption watchdog. Sergeant Rosa Catherine Rossi, 57, also pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates Court to unauthorised access of the police database, LEAP, and falsely claiming in statutory declarations that her name was Dianne Marshall and she lived in Endeavour Hills. The Age revealed that Rossi used a string of aliases over the past 20 years, including Nora
Marguglio, Rosa Spencer and Bella Rossi. In 2005, she declared bankruptcy under her former name Rossa Catherine Marguglio, owing more than $750,000 to several banks and racking up massive debts on several different credit cards. Rossi became familiar with the financial system while working as a teller at a bayside bank. At the same time she also worked as a beautician at a nursing home in Cheltenham. She left both jobs under a cloud. Upon joining Victoria Police, Rossi exploited her role during an 18-month crime spree, often
wearing her uniform to help persuade others to furnish her with private information. Rossi pleaded guilty to deceiving locksmiths to fraudulently take possession of houses in Malvern East, Chadstone, Brooklyn and three rural properties in Willaura. She accessed LEAP, without authorisation, to acquire information about the owner of the Malvern East home in October 2016. A month later, she obtained the property by deception after telling a locksmith it was a deceased estate and she was the owner. An investigation by the Independent
Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission, also resulted in Rossi being charged with fraudulently claiming rent assistance from Centrelink on behalf of another woman. Rossi will face a plea hearing in the County Court on April 29, 2020. A colleague, Inspector David Manly, will face a plea hearing on December 17, after recently admitting he lied under oath to IBAC investigators after being caught with a mobile phone that he claimed to have destroyed. - The Age

Works created by seven talented Wyndham artists from the RedWest Creatives Co-Op will be displayed at a Hoppers Crossing gallery this month. The Primo RED exhibition is the co-op’s first group exhibition, and includes paintings, photography, ceramic sculpture, mixed media and video stills. RedWest, which formed last year, is a group for artists and performers from the western suburbs, who aim to share knowledge, auspice grants and grow the arts scene in the west. The group’s exhibition is being held at the C & H Gallery, a privately-run commercial gallery space located within The Picture Framing Shak in Hoppers Crossing. New life for waterhole A wetland habitat for birds at Serendip Sanctuary, located near the You Yangs, has been rejuvenated thanks to a $27,000 contribution from two community groups. Officially re-opened last month, the “Wildlife Waterhole” has been given a new lease on life thanks to the generousity of the Lara District Community Bank and the Lions Club of Lara. The $27,000 funding has paid for the construction of a new pond, the planting of native vegetation and landscaping and an automated filtration system at the sanctuary. The sanctuary recreates a natural habitat for a range of birdlife, plants, fish and other small animals. It’s also home to emus, wallabies, kangaroos and lizards. Parks Victoria district manager Paul
Wallace said that Serendip Sanctuary was “a much-loved community asset that provides a unique learning experience for thousands of visitors and school children every year”. Lara District Community Bank chairman Andrew Hilliard said the sanctuary has been part of the Lara community for about 60 years. “The fact that the wetland ecosystem is used by school groups as a learning centre … was a key factor in our decision to support this project,” he said. UPDATE ON THE WEST GATE TUNNEL PROJECT Construction has now started on Melbourne’s second major river crossing for the west, with foundations being built for the bridges over the Maribyrnong River. A 30-metre high piling rig has been floated in on a barge to start building the bridge that will cross the river to connect the West Gate Tunnels to a new elevated road above Footscray Road and directly to the Port of Melbourne. Two ramps adjoining the bridge will also be constructed, giving direct freeway access to Mackenzie Road and Appleton Dock Road for trucks entering the port. The bridges over the Maribyrnong River, just south of Footscray Road, are a vital part of the project to take motorists to the northern and western parts of the CBD and get trucks off local roads. Innovative bridge construction methods are being used to build the Maribyrnong River bridges and ensure that we keep the river open to boats, keep Mackenzie Road open for truck access to the port, as well as meet all environmental requirements to protect the health of the river. Further along Footscray Road we have made progress on the concrete columns that will support the two kilometres of elevated road that will run above it. This road will connect the tunnel to the port, city and CityLink. Further west, a key part of the West Gate Tunnel Project is the widening of the West Gate Freeway from eight to 12 through lanes to provide more capacity and reduce congestion. To create room for the extra lanes, we are replacing massive electricity towers with 15 slimmer monopoles – up to 58m tall – and two smaller lattice towers. Six monopoles and the two lattice towers are being installed within the freeway reserve, between Grieve Parade in Altona North and Hyde Street in Yarraville. Nine monopoles are being installed within the Brooklyn Terminal Station. This important work will be managed so that all lanes of the freeway remain open during peak times.

Baby formula thief jailed By Alesha Capone A man who pleaded guilty to taking part in nine burglaries which targeted baby formula and vitamins has been sentenced to three years jail. Goods totalling $541,000 were stolen during the burglaires, committed on commercial premises between June 8 and August 30 last year. Gurwinder Gill was sentenced last month in the County Court after pleading guilty to nine
charges of theft, one charge of possessing a drug of dependence and the summary offence of committing an indictable offence while on bail. Judge Michael Cahilll told the court that Gill and his accomplices committed the burglaries “late at night on commercial premises which were targeted for baby formula and vitamins intended for Asia”. A Point Cook business was one of those hit, with about $90,000 of stock stolen. Gill was arrested in Laverton North last
August when he collected a truck used during one of the burglaries. Police also searched Gill’s car and found a phone, knuckle dusters, $640 in cash, an angle grinder and a small bag of heroin. Judge Cahill said that Gill admitted to police he had been paid $7000, which he used to buy heroin, for his involvement in the burglaries. Gill also told police that he had been battling a heroin addiction for two to three years. In sentencing, Judge Cahill said he had taken into account Gill’s lack of prior convictions,
“frank admissions” to police and “good prospects of rehabilitation”. Judge Cahill said two of Gill’s co-offenders, Herdeep Singh and Navjinder Singh, had previously been sentenced. Herdeep Singh, of Newport, was sentenced to 21 months jail for his involvement in burglaries and thefts on three commercial premises. Navinder Singh, of St Albans, was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment for burglaries and thefts carried out at three commercial premises.
Garden gets green gong An innovative Werribee garden program has been honoured at the Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards. The Working Beyond the Boundaries program, which gives refugee communities volunteering and work experience regenerating a historic garden at Werribee Park, won the Environmental Justice award category. The program, run by settlement agency AMES Australia and Parks Victoria, aims to provide economic, social, physical and mental health benefits to more than 500 refugees and people from culturally diverse communities. AMES Australia chief executive Cath Scarth said the award was a validation of the hard work put in by everyone working on the program. “The Working Beyond the Boundaries program is building social cohesion, helping refugees and migrants gain employment and language skills while also connecting them with established members of the local community,” Ms Scarth said.
“It is terrific to see the program recognised for the great outcomes it has achieved; and it’s a great lesson in what can be achieved through partnerships and the goodwill of ordinary people.” Ms Scarth said case workers reported lower levels of mental health issues among participants since the garden’s inception and many younger members of the communities have secured employment in local market gardens. On track for a greener future By Esther Lauaki Wyndham council has stepped up its efforts to be more sustainable. The council has been working to drive down greenhouse gas emissions across Wyndham through its Large-Scale Solar program – installing solar panels on council buildings – and Lighting the West program which replaces street lights with energy-saving LEDs. Both programs resulted in a 12 per cent emissions reduction compared to a year ago. The council is now emitting 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, compared to 25,000 tonnes the year before – excluding emissions generated by the Refuse Disposal Facility.
Environment and Sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said while council was pleased with this result, it wasn’t resting on its laurels. “Having installed solar panels in 38 council buildings already, [the council] is now turning its attention to the municipality’s non-profit and community organisations,” Cr Marcus said. “Over this financial year, Wyndham City will install solar panels on 14 buildings that are used by kindergartens, childcare providers and sports clubs. “These panels on these 14 sites are estimated to save $2 million in power bills over their 20-year lifespan and all savings will be passed
on in full to community groups. “In addition, through our Lighting the West Program we are replacing 1500 inefficient street lights with LEDs this year alone. “With street lights and electricity output accounting for 82 per cent of council’s greenhouse gas emissions, these programs play an essential role in helping us reach our long-term goal of being carbon neutral.” The $8.4 million Lighting the West program is mostly funded by the council in addition to $1.5 million in federal funding. The $3.5 million Large-Scale Solar program is largely funded by a federal government grant, with Wyndham council chipping in $400,000.

Number’s up for false plates Police were left scratching their heads after locating a Holden Commodore with hand-drawn false registration plates in Werribee last month. The car was found parked in Treeve Parkway on October 25. It had a false numberplate, created using paper and blue texta, reading “SSD-570”. The false plates also had the tagline “Victoria – The Edgucation State” written on them. Senior Sergeant Samantha Ryan from Werribee police told radio station 3AW that the incorrect spelling of “education” had captured the attention of the media and the public, after photos of the plates were uploaded to the official Wyndham police Facebook page. Senior Sergeant Ryan described the number plates as “high in terms of artistic merit”. “Someone has tried to replicate a number plate, even going to the extent of trying to replicate the Southern Cross, with a couple of white dots it looks like,” she said. “They’ve gone to a lot of effort, I must say.” A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the investigation into the false plates is ongoing, and that the owner of the Commodore is encouraged to get in contact with police. Drains a strain for litter A council-led initiative aims to put a lid on the build-up of litter flowing into Port Phillip Bay. Wyndham council has installed 20 stormwater drain traps as part of an effort by a number of councils to reduce the pollutants filtering into the port. Environment and Sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said that even though Wyndham residents are conscious when it comes to disposing of waste correctly, plastic and other rubbish still finds its way into our waterways. “Wyndham is one of the six councils taking part in the state government-funded Let’s Strain the Drains project, which is delivered by Tangaroa Blue Foundation, Cleanwater Group and Sustainability Victoria,” Cr Marcus said. Including Wyndham city’s 20 traps, there will be a total of 120 stormwater drain traps installed in stormwater drains across the network. “The traps are like large baskets that capture litter of varying sizes before it enters the stormwater system, and when they are full, the contents will be sorted and counted, so the source and type of pollution can be identified. “Once we have this information, Wyndham city can work with residents and businesses to see how we can improve our waste disposal, so it doesn’t reach our waterways.” Register: info@tangaroablue.org. 12431479-NG46-19

MY WYNDHAM Wyndham Vale artist Ceardai Demelza is one of several locals whose work is featured in a new exhibition celebrating Wyndham’s emerging artists. It’s at the Wyndham Art Gallery, Werribee until November 17. Ceardia chats with Alesha Capone. Tell me about your art. I do many things, including drawing, painting, sewing, sculpture and costume making. I create these theatrical, life-size scenes – you put the sculpture in there, make costumes, I do the backdrop and then take a photo of that. Instead of using Photoshop, I create a real scene. With the model in the costume, sometimes in the past I’ve been the model. The photo at Wyndham Art Gallery is of another model. Five photos and one of the sculptures from one of the photos is on display. The scenes are about women and mythology, and creating modern-day myths. For the Wyndham Art Gallery exhibition, the woman in my art is named Dandelion. She is part dandelion, part woman, part snake and part electricity. She has the power to capture leaf-blowers and turn them into birds.
I’ve been doing a bachelor of arts with honours, this year at the VCA. I came up with this idea in my first year of study. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m painting, but a very unconventional way of painting. I guess I like the method I’m using, it allows me to do lots of different things. It’s fun because I’m not just bound to one thing, I get to make lots of crazy things. For the photos in the Wyndham Art Gallery, I rented a hall and it became a big production over three days. I had about half a dozen people helping me. It wasn’t a photography studio, we had to get up on ladders and block out all the windows. It’s great to see the photos afterwards. They’re a lot

How did you first come up with the general concept for your artwork?
of work, but I think it’s worth it. What do you like about Wyndham Vale? I really like where I live. It’s a very nice, quiet area. It feels a bit like the country to me. It’s a
beautiful area in Wyndham Green, with lots of nice trees and parkland. You can also get into the city if you need to, but it’s like being in the country. I’ve been in this place since February. I was in Bendigo for three years before that, but I’ve been living in Wyndham on and off

Active audiology listens to customers In a world where large corporations are gobbling up smaller businesses, Active Audiology in Altona is proudly flying the flag for independence. Cris Ivanidis, audiologist of 20 years standing and owner of Active Audiology for the past eight, believes these big companies are actually undermining the hearing profession. “We’re seeing more and more companies, with no traditional affiliation with the hearing profession, now offering people diverse services within the health sector, with hearing facilities ‘tacked on’,” he says. “We do only hearing services. We don’t sell insurance, glasses, groceries or coffins et al on the side. One hundred per cent of our time and resources are dedicated to successful hearing device fittings and an absolutely personalised service that makes people feel listened to.” Clinicians at Active Audiology are locally trained – and hired only if they demonstrate the right ethics and professional standards when counselling and treating hearing loss. Marina Opacak, a talented audiologist who works alongside Cris, shares a story that embodies what Active Audiology is about. “We recently saw a distressed client who worked in a call centre and was struggling to hear customers. Her confidence was shattered and she was stressed about being able to continue in her job. “A great deal of care was taken in counselling this client on her emotional concerns,” Marina explains. “It turned out that a hearing device was going to be the best solution. “The process took longer than normal because we knew she needed extra attention and care with her hearing management. Carnival for a cause A carnival for Tarneit’s Tantaro family promises plenty of fun. The Carnival for the Cousins Crusade will be held at Derrimut Heath Primary School in Hoppers Crossing on November 16 to raise money for the Tantaro boys, who all have the genetic condition Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Brothers Jakob, 7, and Lukas, 5, and their cousin, Anthony, 10, were born with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a hereditary condition that causes muscle wastage, breathing difficulties and heart problems. Their grandmother Sue Tantaro is leading the charge to raise money for the youngsters who, by the time they are 12, will lose their ability to walk and eventually become quadriplegics.
There is no cure for DMD. Mrs Tantaro’s fundraising efforts to help her grandsons have included a weight loss challenge and building a respite home to suit their specialist needs. “The carnival will be to raise money for everything from accessible vehicles, scooters, wheelchairs and various therapies, things that aren’t covered by the National Disability Insurance Scheme,” Mrs Tantaro said. A proposal to issue each ratepayer in Werribee Shire with three free vouchers for use of the Wests Road Tip has been rejected by council. An estimate that such a move could result in a loss of revenue from the tip, of $18,000 a year, played a great part in shaping council’s decision.
About 30 placard-waving protestors marched and chanted their way along Synott St to deliver 7000 signatures, which oppose the closure of beds at the Werribee Hospital, to Werribee MLA Dr Ken Coghill, last Friday. The protestors crowded the footpath in front of Dr Coghill’s Duncans Rd office singing and chanting while they waited for Dr Coghill to appear.
Wyndham council will seek compensation from property developer Mr Jerome Borazio after the discovery of materials from his asbestos-ridden Werribee hospital site dumped at the Werribee tip. The council will ask Mr Borazio to cover costs they incurred after running tests on materials he had dumped at the tip in Wests Road.
A decision to approve a controversial bottleshop next to a convenience store in Werribee’s Heathdale estate has sparked community outrage. On October 19, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Appeals Tribunal over-turned a decision by the Liquor Licensing director to refuse a packaged liquor outlet at 113 Rosella Avenue.

Western United striker Besart Berisha underlined what a derby victory would mean to his club in an impassioned plea to teammates in the huddle before they went out to battle against his former club Melbourne Victory in the A-League on Saturday night. Berisha’s words were most important because they deflected a week of build-up largely revolving around his first game back against the Victory – a club where he will go down as one of the greats – to the us against them mentality United took into the local derby. In footage released on Western United’s social media accounts, Berisha said: “Boys, it’s an important game, not for me, but for us. This is the game every football player wants to play in. This is the game every football player wants to win.” It was clear this was a game for Western United that was far bigger than the individual storylines. This was all about making a strong impression against a Victory team that has ruled this city since the A-League’s inception. Max Burgess came on as a substitute in the
midfield for Western United and savoured every moment of his side’s 3-2 upset win. “It was one of those special moments as a player,” Burgess said. “Definitely for the club as well, it was a special night. “Obviously a big derby and hopefully the start of something special in terms of that rivalry.” The quality of the match and the high drama of Western United’s comeback win will spark a rivalry between the two tribes. “To come back from two-nil down was really gutsy,” he said. “It showed a lot of character and I think everyone saw that with the way we celebrated together at the final whistle.” A pocket of Western United fans donning the striking green and black merchandise never stopped chanting or waving their flags for the full 90 minutes. Burgess said the away supporters provided great contagious energy. “We love their support as players,“ he said. “There’s that real connection with the fans
because it’s the first year. We’re starting from the beginning with them and we’re all starting to connect on a personal level.” Western United is a perfect two-from-two on the road, but the fourth-placed side is yet to register a win on home soil. That rankles Burgess and his teammates and they want to fix that unwanted record against Western Sydney Wanderers at GMHBA Stadium this Saturday night. “It will be really good to get back to the fans and test ourselves against a really strong side,” Burgess said. Meanwhile, Western United has just launched a new four-game membership, which includes admission to the remaining 2019 games in Geelong against the Western Sydney Wanderers, Newcastle Jets, Sydney FC and the derby with Melbourne Victory. Derby delight for Western United By Lance Jenkinson Western United has stunned local rivals Melbourne Victory, scoring the last three goals of their inaugural derby to win 3-2 in the A-League at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night. It was the first time in Victory’s 15-year history that it has lost a game when holding a two-goal lead. United stormed to victory on the back of two first half goals, the first a doozy from Alessandro Diamanti and the second an own goal from Victory defender James Donachie, and a second half match-winner from Scott McDonald. United coach Mark Rudan said “it’s up there” with the most special wins of his coaching career. “Two-nil down, away from home, through our own mistakes, we gave them two goals and they punished us for that, but we were courageous, they kept on playing, they kept on doing the things that we worked on and the team we want to be as well, and you get rewarded for it,” Rudan said. “It’s persistence, it’s courage, it’s a belief in our principles of play, so I’m really happy for them. “It’s a testament to what we’re building as a football club.” Western United could not have envisaged a worse start to the match. The first 10 minutes were dominated by the Victory and plagued with United defensive errors. Andrew Durante, usually safe with the ball at his feet for Western United, produced a loose pass that was broken up by Victory defender Leigh Broxham in the lead-up to Victory’s first goal. Broxham pounced to move the ball to Kristijan Dobras, who found Victory captain Ola Toivonen poised and ready to unleash a powerful long range strike for a goal. A minute later, Connor Chapman carelessly turned the ball over for Western United. On this occasion, Toivonen re-paid the favour, assisting Dobras on a goal to make it 2-0 to Victory after just seven minutes. Western United started to clean up its act after the Dobras goal. Indeed, they enjoyed a sustained period of pressure that led to Italian superstar Alessandro Diamanti halving the deficit in the 16th minute. McDonald built up the attacking move for United, shifting the Victory defence out of
position, but his cross was only half cleared by a defender and straight to the feet of Diamanti, who dragged United back into the game with a powerfully struck goal for United from outside the box. It was a crucial moment in the game. “It was important that we got that first one,” Rudan said. “Football is a very funny game, if they had’ve got the third one, it would’ve been a different story, but they didn’t. “We showed a lot of character.” Western United was the dominant team for the remainder of the first half. Their reward came through a bit of luck in the form of an equalising own goal from Donachie. McDonald again did most of the build-up work to the goal and served up a delightful cross to Josh Risdon. Risdon redirected the ball with a header back into the box and a lunging United striker Besart Berisha did everything but get his boot on the ball, but missed the tap in. Berisha’s former teammate Donachie came to his aid, accidentally putting the ball into his own net. Fittingly, the 50th minute winner for Western United came from McDonald. McDonald feigned to go inboard, but jinked back to shoot with his right boot and a deflection off Broxham saw the ball sail into the top corner away from Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas. Rudan was reticent to praise any one individual after the win, but conceded McDonald was a standout. “He put his hand up, he stood up, but a lot of other players did as well,” Rudan said. “These big games, the big players stand up and create the big moments.” Rudan is adamant the win on the road over Melbourne Victory is worth more to Western United than three points. This game will be a reference point for his side for the remainder of the season and a moment to savour for the fans. “This will be a game, I believe, in 10 or 15 years’ time that we can look back on as a football club and it’s quite a defining moment as far as I’m concerned,” Rudan said. “They should get a lot of confidence from that because we can come to a place like this and be 2-0 down after a matter of minutes and turn it around.” Western United will square off with title contenders Western Sydney Wanderers in a blockbuster at GHMBA Stadium in Geelong from 7.30pm on Saturday night.

Coach heads to SANFL By Lance Jenkinson Jeff Andrews is not one to sit still and let his coaching career stagnate. Andrews has been willing to take a risk and those risks have panned out well so far. An assistant coach with Werribee for the past two VFL seasons, Andrews’ hard work on the sidelines has been rewarded – Andrews landed an exciting new role as senior coach of Central District in the SANFL last week. He left behind friends and family to take up an opportunity that was “too good to pass up”. “In your life, all of those risks that you take tend to work out,” Andrews said. “You learn and you grow and you meet new people. “Although I’ve had a lot of detours along the way, this is something that I’ve been working towards for a long time.” Andrews has not simply rolled the dice on Central District. The 50-year-old did his homework on the Bulldogs, exploring how the club fitted into its local community, the historical aspects and the stability of the club. Central District ticked all the boxes for Andrews. “They’re a really stable, successful, well-run organisation that enjoyed a bit of success and

With the Bulldogs finishing eighth with a 5-13 record last season, Andrews will need to begin a rebuilding process at the club, which he has done before and is ready to do for his new club. “I’m a people person and I love to build relationships,” Andrews said. “I’ll get in and find out what the players want to get out of their careers and then help them. “We’ll build those strong relationships and just keep working on what they’re good at because quite often players can focus on the stuff that they’re not good at. “They’re all at that level because they’re pretty good players, so there will be a real development focus and that’s as players and people.” Andrews has served as an assistant coach with Preston in the VFL and Calder Cannons in the NAB League. Taking the next step to senior coaching was a natural progression. Coaching his own team is not foreign to Andrews, who took Macedon to its drought-breaking premiership in the Riddell District Football League.
Centurions build a new future Werribee Centrals have one eye on the now and the other eye on the future. The Centurions would like to get back to the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2 finals, but they will have to do it with a vastly different line-up to the team that reached the semi-finals last summer. Irrespective of where the Centurions finish on the ladder this season, captain Luke Allister wants it to be remembered as a building block for long-term success. “We’ve had a bit of a change in our first XI as opposed to last year,” he said. “We lost a lot of experience, but it’s given us a chance to play a few young blokes in the team, which is pleasing. “There’s a younger brigade hoping to cement their spots. “It’s exciting when you have young guys who are keen, committed and want to make a difference and take the club forward, and be here for the next 10 to 15 years and start their own legacy.” Even without the key departures, Werribee Centrals were always going to have a challenging summer. The Centurions are playing away from their home at Galvin Park because it is being redeveloped. Playing home games at the nearby Wyndhamvale Reserve has not dampened the enthusiasm of the players. “I know a lot of clubs that have been through this have had to play games without any shade or rooms to sit in,” Allister said. “The Werribee Masters [Football Club] have been good to us to allow us to use the clubrooms.” Having a young and hungry playing group has seen numbers rise at Werribee Centrals training. The jostling for spots in the first XI has created healthy competition. Of the youngsters at Werribee Centrals, keep an eye on off spinner and middle order batsman Jacob Russell, who is off to a flying start with both bat and ball. Adam Steger, Joel Russell and Daniel Melican have also shown promise. Dean Cachia, who made 73 not out in the seconds, has banged down the door of first team selection. Werribee Centrals will continue its clash with Laverton at Wyndhamvale Reserve on Saturday. “It was a four year build at Macedon,” Andrews said. “First year we might’ve won four or six games, but we just got better every year. “It was the first premiership in 41 years, so in the town you couldn’t wipe the smiles off people’s faces. “It had been a really long drought and the club had gone through a recession where they weren’t in business for a couple of years, so they’ve done it really tough. “It was a long journey, but it was really fulfilling.” The final step in Andrews’ journey to a state league coaching gig came as an assistant coach with Werribee in the VFL. Working under John Lamont in his first season and Mark Williams last season, Andrews received valuable insights that will stick with him throughout his coaching career. “They spent time and energy developing me and the other coaches to be as good as we could be,” he said. “I couldn’t have had two better mentors and with different approaches.” While Andrews will be working hard to help Central District climb back up the SANFL ladder, he will relish the chance to take in his new surroundings when he gets a bit of down time.
Saints align with Southampton Williams Landing Football Club has entered into a partnership with English Premier League club Southampton FC with a focus on developing local players and coaches. The Saints, based at Williams Landing Sports Reserve, have joined as an international academy partner with Southampton. As part of the initiative, Williams Landing will use Southampton’s curriculum to develop its players through regular soccer clinics. The Saints will also focus on coaching development, helping their coaches through ongoing training and UEFA licensing. Craig Major, the president of Williams Landing, is excited to be working with Southampton. “We’re delighted to have this global partnership confirmed with Southampton FC,” Major said. “This will help us grow the profile of the club and provide opportunities for young players that otherwise wouldn’t be possible. “We will be able to better support our players in developing their game and offer a culture which has growth at the forefront whilst maintaining a high standard of conduct and professionalism. “Our coaches will also benefit through full access to Southampton FC’s curriculum and will have the opportunity to visit the club’s training grounds in England.” Southampton’s academy played a part in developing some of the best players in the world, including Alan Shearer, Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott. Western United midfielder Scott McDonald was also part of the Saints Academy. “This partnership demonstrates our strong commitment to the growth of this club and offers a potential pathway to uncover and develop locally grown talent,” Major said.
