After 53 years working in his Station Place barbershop, Werribee icon Vito ‘Vic’ Sammartino is hanging up his shavers and scissors. Mr Sammartino, who started working at the business when he was 20, is planning to retire in a few weeks’ time. “I would like to spend more time with my wife Lina, our children and two grandchildren and also go to Italy every now and then,” Mr Sammartino said. Now, 73, Mr Sammartino began working at the village barbershop in his hometown of Vizzini, Sicily, when he was about seven years old. The day he arrived in Australia, in 1966, he visited the Station Place barbershop and was employed on the spot – and the rest, as they say, is history. Mr Sammartino said his long-running barbershop has become something of a “legend” in Werribee. “I would like to thank all my customers and all the people in the Werribee community who support the shop,” he said. Mr Sammartino has sold the barbershop to Werribee barber Abdul ‘Sam’ Zanganah, who has been working with him for about a month. Although he is retiring, Mr Sammartino said his loyal customers might still spot him in the shop every now and then. Alesha Capone

Wyndham’s train crush By Alesha Capone Train passengers are being “crammed in like sardines”, with a new report showing the number of passengers using Wyndham Vale station had increased by 20 per cent in the past 12 months. According to V/Line’s annual report, more than 120,000 new passengers came through the Wyndham Vale station alone last year. The report also stated the number of passengers using Tarneit station increased by 17 per cent (176,000 new passengers) in the 2018-19 financial year.

Information available on V/Line’s website showed that on average, between March 21 and May 5 this year, all of the seats on the 4.31am weekday service from Geelong to Southern Cross station were occupied by the time the train arrived at Tarneit station. This was also the case for the 5.12am, 5.45am, 6.13am, 6.44am, 6.48am and 7.36am trains. On average, the 6.44am and 7.35am trains reached 100 per cent seating capacity by the time they reached Wyndham Vale. The 7.11am, 7.33am and 7.55am trains from Wyndham Vale station also hit 100 per cent seating capacity by they time they reached

Police caught 39 motorists speeding along the Princes Freeway during Operation Butts earlier this month. The October 17 operation involved Wyndham uniform police and officers from the Westgate Highway Patrol. Police said Operation Butts was carried out near the roadwork and construction zone on Duncans Road, where there were changed road conditions, workers on-site and a reduced speed limit in place. Police said they were “very pleased with most motorists who slowed and obeyed the speed limit” but some motorists were detected breaking the law. In addition to the 39 speeding drivers, police caught five motorists driving an unregistered vehicle, one unlicensed driver and one driver who failed to obey a probationary driver’s licence condition. Police said it was important for motorists to obey the 60km/h speed limit at the Duncans Road roadworks, and that they would continue to conduct enforcement operations in roadworks zones across Wyndham. Both arguments are flawed, as the Irish were the first to celebrate it as part of the ancient Celtic Festival of Samhain, so it is not American. And we are not backward in celebrating events we didnâ€™t invent â€“ Christmas, Easter and Queenâ€™s Birthday immediately come to mind. The Americans have taken Halloween to a new level of crass commercialism, but it was not their idea. Besides, we are only too happy to embrace their language â€“ trash, sidewalks, fries, candy. And donâ€™t start me on sport â€“ off-ence, de-fence, the paint, batters. It is an endless cacophony of crimes against our native tongue. At least Halloween has lollies. We went costume-and-decoration shopping the other day. People were laughing and enjoying themselves â€“ a far cry from normal shopping experiences. Some people donâ€™t like the idea of kids roaming the streets knocking on doors, which I can understand to a degree. Just put a â€œNo

Halloweenâ€? sign up. We have balloons on our front fence to let the kids know we are Halloween-friendly. Our family has a ball looking at the costumes and chatting to the kids. It is harmless fun and at my place it is all about lollies, lollies and more lollies. No carrots or celery sticks, apple pieces or organic tofu bars at my place â€“ itâ€™s Violet Crumbles, Cherry Ripes, Freddo Frogs and Redskins. And thatâ€™s just for starters. We live in a state that has a public holiday the day before the football grand final and for a three-minute horse race, both of which we embrace with gusto. Halloween isnâ€™t a holiday and never should be, though donâ€™t tell the campaigning politicians that. If they thought it might get them a few votes, theyâ€™d probably add it to their lists of promises. It is nice to see kids in the streets, laughing and enjoying themselves. We see so little of it nowadays. It is refreshing and it is for just a few hours. It is a treat, not a trick. Deal with it. â–

Cops in road Cup crackdown By Alesha Capone Speeding, driver distraction and alcohol-affected motorists will be targeted in a roads operation across the Melbourne Cup long weekend. Sergeant Marty Wallace, from the Westgate Highway Patrol, said Operation Furlong would run from Friday, November 1 to Tuesday, November 5. Sergeant Wallace said that police would be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injury crashes, including

excessive speed, driver distraction, restraint non-compliance, fatigue and impaired driving (alcohol and/or drug-affected drivers). â€œMotorists are requested to stay within the speed limit, donâ€™t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, leave your mobile phone out of reach, wear your seatbelt/child restraints and make sure you are well-rested,â€? Sergeant Wallace said. â€œDrivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that you take at least a 15 minute break at least every two hours and donâ€™t drive if you are tired.â€?

Throughout the operation speed cameras will be placed in known high-collision locations. â€œRoad trauma isnâ€™t just about the lives that are lost â€“ itâ€™s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones,â€? Sergeant Wallace said. â€œAll of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma.â€? RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings, said the

group worked alongside police in the hope that initiatives such as Operation Furlong would reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. â€œDrivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road,â€? Countdown to Showdown Professional wrestler Andy Phoenix is expecting to win when he faces off against Dowie James in Werribee next month. Phoenix, who lives in Brimbank, will fight a grudge match against James at the event, presented by Showdown Wrestling. â€œIâ€™m anticipating Iâ€™m going to win,â€? Phoenix said. â€œWhat I enjoy most about wrestling is the competition, the adrenaline, the almost elite performance aspect of it.â€? Phoenix said his interest in wrestling began when he was growing up in Ireland, and he would watch the sport on television with his family. He trained under WWE superstar Finn Ballor in Ireland, and at the Fight Factory, which was founded by Fergal Devitt and Paul Tracey from the New Japan Pro-Wrestling. Nowadays, Phoenix spends up to 2.5 hours in the gym, six days a week, plus an additional six hours per week training in wrestling.

Youths charged

A total of 57 young people were arrested in suburbs including Sunshine and Truganina last week, in a statewide crackdown on youth crime. The arrested youths, mostly aged between 15 and 21, have been charged with a number of offences, including carjackings, home invasions and street robberies.

Buddy bench for all Pupils at a Hoppers Crossing school welcomed families and community members for a special event promoting safety and friendship recently. Youngsters at Mossfiel Primary School took part in a safety walk and watched the unveiling of a buddy bench in the playground. The buddy bench is for students to sit on when they are in need of a friend to play with during break times – if another young person sees them sitting on the bench, they can invite them to join their friendship group. The school also unveiled a new mural, created by pupils, to promote the theme of staying safe.

Adding to the festivities, pupils and staff were encouraged to wear a splash of red and make a gold coin donation to the school. Ice-cream sundaes were sold at the school in the lead-up to the Safety Day event to raise money for The Daniel Morcombe Foundation, which aims to make Australia a safer place for children. The foundation also aims to educate children and young people about how to stay safe in physical and online environments. The foundation was established in honour of Daniel Morcombe, who was abducted and murdered at the age of 13 in Queensland.

A ‘Wheelie’ bike rack is being trialled at Tarneit train station under a collaboration between the state government and Monash University. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly last week unveiled the Wheelie, which can hold nine bikes and is simpler to install than fixed bike hoops. Heart help close to home The heart health of Wyndham residents is now in even better hands, with St Vincentâ€™s Private Hospital Werribee preparing to launch a full angioplasty service. Angioplasty is a minimally invasive surgery which repairs or unblocks blood vessels, such as a coronary artery. Cardiologist Professor Robert Whitbourn said that for Wyndham residents requiring angioplasty, the option of being treated close

to home, with leading-edge technology, would make the overall experience less stressful. â€œThis is a great opportunity for our community to receive ongoing heart care,â€? Professor Whitbourn said. â€œItâ€™s not only about the procedure â€“ having access to the latest equipment and skilled clinicians is crucial â€“ but on top of that it streamlines the journey that a patient and family goes through from diagnosis to full recovery.â€?

St Vincentâ€™s Private Hospital Werribeeâ€™s general manager Libby Fifis said that Wyndhamâ€™s fast-growing population meant there is always demand for medical services. â€œAs a relatively new hospital, we have a long-term plan to grow with the community and provide the best, most relevant services to match their needs, whether itâ€™s this new service or our remarkable maternity unit, rehab facility or orthopedic surgeons,â€? she said.

Drawing positives from art therapy is one of the main themes of a creative program run by Mercy Mental Health in Werribee. The program, which is run at the Clare Moore Building located at Werribee Mercy Hospital, held its annual art show last week. The walls of the building were covered with pictures of leopards, self-portraits, objects from nature and patterns, as well as words and images of encouragement and support. Art therapy mastersâ€™ student Marni Harris, who helps to run the program, said that rather than focusing on the end artistic product, the most significant part of the process was how people felt making their pieces and how they responded to their final image. â€œArt therapy is particularly good for people who might struggle to communicate verbally,â€? Ms Harris said.

Waste costs pile up By Tate Papworth Waste company Cleanaway may have bought recycler SKM, but tens of thousands of tonnes of discarded waste still lies in factories across Derrimut, Sunshine, Laverton and Campbellfield and owners are none the wiser as to what to do with it. SKM collapsed in July, owing tens of millions of dollars. The collapse forced a number of councils, including Brimbank, to divert kerbside recycling material to landfill.

Cleanaway now intends to resume kerbside services, but that doesn’t solve the problem festering in suburban factories. Marwood Construction project manager Carly Whitington said they have no idea what to do with the 10,000 tonnes of discarded recyclable material they’ve inherited at their Derrimut warehouse. “With the news that Cleanaway has purchased the failed SKM enterprise, we were in the hope that Cleanaway would come and rectify the left behind issue, but we’ve been advised that’s not the case,” Ms Whitington said. “Basically what we’re trying to do is liaise with the government to see if there can be some subsidy or deal … come to an agreement about us transporting this material to the Cleanaway site on Gilbertson Road and having it recycled. “They haven’t got any answers for us yet, which they haven’t for quite a while. We’re

waiting for some form of resolution because we need to do something with it.” She called on the state government to end the state of limbo. “We met with the Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio. We met with some of her associates as well, but there hasn’t been a yes or a no.

“I’ve even contacted a representative and said if it’s a no, just tell us it’s a no and we’ll walk away. If you are going to help us in some sort of respect, tell us, give us a time, don’t just leave us in limbo. Because that’s where we are at the moment. We’ve been left with this for two to three months since the collapse and we don’t know what to do with it.”

Ms Whitington estimated the company was already out of pocket $500,000 on lost rent and would have to find close to $2 million to clean the warehouse. “It surprises me that the government isn’t taking a proactive approach to this,” she said. “People are going to be looking at this and thinking ‘why am I bothering recycling’.

Jazeer Nijamudeen said about 60 people have so far signed the petition, but he hopes to get about 300 signatures in total. The petition, to the Legislative Assembly of Victoria, states that the lack of bus services through the estate has a “significant impact on residents’ ability to safely access employment, education, healthcare and the supermarkets”. “This disproportionately impacts disadvantaged residents who are too young, too sick, too old or too poor to drive,” the petition states. “They are currently forced to walk up to two kilometres to catch a bus.” Mr Nijamudeen said that buses often travelled through the estate to the Williams Landing train station, beginning at the CDC

depot in Williams Landing, which is located near Allura. “It’s a bit ironic and a bit of a joke, as the CDC bus depot is actually opposite the estate,” he said. Mr Nijamudeen said he believed the estate’s Elmhurst Road was of a suitable width for a bus stop to be installed, and it has slip lanes. He said having a bus stop within the estate would also reduce congestion and increase parking availability at Williams Landing and Tarneit train stations, as it would give Allura residents the option of not driving

Hair, a Harley and a hero Point Cook man Will Roberts is prepared to go to great lengths to raise funds for a good cause. Next month, Mr Roberts will cut off his long hair and beard to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), as part of the organisation’s Zero Hero campaign. Mr Roberts said that every few years since the age of 18, he has cut off his hair and donated it to charity to be made into a wig for someone suffering from an illness such as cancer. He said that this year, he decided to also fundraise for the NBCF, after a “very good friend” was diagnosed with breast cancer. So far, Mr Roberts’ family, friends and colleagues at Peter Stevens Motorcycles in Kensington have donated more than $1500 to his fundraising efforts. Mr Roberts said the last time he cut his hair was 2015. “I don’t really mind cutting it, I like having long hair but knowing that I’m helping

someone is great,” he said. Mr Roberts and his wife Claire may also look familiar to other Point Cook residents, as every December they help spread Christmas spirit in the suburb. Mr Roberts dresses up as Santa Claus, and the pair hop onto his Harley and ride around Point Cook’s parks, giving lollies out to local children. Seven fish lands student top art prize Tarneit Senior College student Apshita Farah says she felt “overjoyed” to win a youth art competition. An artwork created by Apshita has received first place in the inaugural Senior Arts Competition run by Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly. The aim of the competition was for senior students in the Tarneit electorate to create a picture showcasing the theme of community. As winner of the competition, Apshita’s artwork will be hung in Ms Connolly’s office. Apshita, 17, will also receive $500 in prize money. Apshita, who is in year 11, said she created her award-winning picture after her Studio Arts teacher Tim assigned his students to make a piece based upon an influential person, location or object in their lives. Apshita said that at the time, she had only been living in Tarneit for about five months, so she drew the seven pet fish she had left behind in her home country of Bangladesh. “I really missed them and hence decided to draw the seven of them in cupped hands,” she said. “I really liked the fact how my finished artwork coincidentally portrayed the cultural and ethnic diversity of Tarneit. “The fishes of different colours represented all the various and unique groups of people of Tarneit and the hand cupping the fishes was a portrayal of us all living ‘together’ harmoniously in this beautiful community.” Apshita said she was “overjoyed” to find out her artwork won the competition. Union fined over Altona North blockade

By Goya Dmytryshchak A Melbourne Cup eve run for humans will retrace the tracks of Phar Lap around the former Williamstown Racecourse. The Hobsons Bay Running Club, known as The Hobos, will host the fourth Phar Lap run. Committee member Aaron McAleese said the community was welcome to join the free event. “Runners will take on the 3.218 kilometre circuit, the original Melbourne Cup distance, at what is now Altona Coastal Park,” he said. “The remnants of the stands still remain and the existing path which follows the old track is still a beautiful place for running.” Williamstown Racecourse operated from 1864 to 1940 before the federal government took over the land for army training in World War II. Phar Lap won the Underwood Stakes there in 1931. Williamstown Racing Club had planned to resume racing at the course in 1948, but in 1947 a suspicious fire destroyed much of the public and members stands and racing was never held there again, according to Williamstown historian Tom Ferris. This year, men will compete for the Egret Cup and women for the Kestrel Cup, in honour of two bird species who call the park home. The fastest race times were last year set by Lachlan Welsh (10:49) and Tameka Day (12:26). Phar Lap’s winning Melbourne Cup time in 1930 was 3:27.7. The race, on Monday, November 4, will start at 6.45pm with registration from 6.15pm at the carpark at Altona Road, north of the Pines Scout Camp (Melway ref 55-B9). is open to all ages (children must be accompanied). The CFMMEU was this month fined $80,000 and one of its officials individually fined $12,000 for two blockades at an Aldi construction site in Altona North in 2014. The Federal Court of Australia fined the union and official Drew MacDonald for contravening the Fair Work Act on December 5 and 8, 2014. Mr MacDonald had twice parked a vehicle across the only entrance to 302-330 Millers Road and prevented any vehicles from entering the Altona North site with intent to coerce Magellan Projects to comply with a lawful request to make an enterprise agreement, the court heard. Magellan was contracted to perform building work at the site and was not covered by any enterprise agreement. On December 5, 2014, several workers from Melbourne Precast Concrete Nominees, contracted by Magellan to install concrete panels, were blocked from entering the site. Mr MacDonald parked a vehicle across the site entrance and told the site manager words to the effect of, “No panels going up today”. On December 8, 2014, Mr MacDonald parked a vehicle across the site entrance and various vehicles of subcontractors were prevented from entering the site. All of the allegations were admitted by Mr MacDondald and the union.

Foodie feast in time for summer By Goya Dmytryshchak The ‘Grazeland’ food precinct catering for 30,000 people at Spotswood has gained approval from Hobsons Bay council and is slated to open for summer. The council is tomorrow expected to issue a planning permit for what has been dubbed “Melbourne’s most exciting new culinary destination”. Museums Victoria, which also manages the Royal Exhibition Building, called for expressions of interest from vendors to operate at the vacant Crown land that was recently used

to film Australian Ninja Warrior. The EoI document stated the precinct would be “reminiscent of a permanent street party or laneway festival”. Push Projects’ application states the “festive, family-focused food and entertainment precinct” will operate each weekend for about three years. “Vendors at Grazeland will be carefully curated to provide diversity for our customers,” it states. “By selecting only specialists in each particular style or type of food, we ensure our customers are not presented with mediocrity.”

It is expected to have 71 traders including 41 selling savoury food and dessert and 28 offering sweets, fresh foods, potato sticks, fruit drinks, face-painting, temporary tattoos, fairy floss, promotional products and branded merchandise. There will also be three bars, live on-stage entertainment, roving artists and performers, and multiple private function spaces. The 8700 square metre site will have two gates and an entrance fee of $2.50 or free for accompanied children under 12. Grazeland would be open every weekend of the year, trading Friday from 5-10pm, Saturday

from noon-10pm and Sunday from noon-9pm. Projected figures predict the precinct will attract 8000 visitors on Fridays, 12,600 on Saturdays and 9400 on Sundays. As part of the council’s approval, if overflow car parking causes a nuisance, additional car parking is to be provided onsite or in other approved locations. The council received three objections and one letter of support of the Grazeland application. Grounds for objections included concerns about increased traffic, pedestrian safety, onsite parking provision, noise, scale and an adverse economic impact on existing local traders.

Chefs cook up a storm Two former Masterchef contestants from the western suburbs will reunite for one of the country’s largest cooking events. Sydenham’s Anushka Zargaryan and Altona’s Walleed Rasheed will share a tent at the Cake, Bake and Sweets show as they endeavour to keep their culinary dreams alive post Masterchef. Anushka will be serving her honey cake, which became a signature dish and wowed the judges on the hit tv show. She hopes it proves as popular with the public. “I’ve got two flavours now, the original honey and chocolate,” she said. “I’m hoping it will generate enough interest at the show to manufacture it.” Walleed was known to many before Masterchef through his business, the Fresh Prince of Baklava, which trades from Kensington and South Melbourne markets.

He said the business has grown since his television appearance, and the Cake, Bake and Sweets show is another step forward. “I began this business about four years ago. I still work corporate, but because of my love of food, I wanted to do something, so I launched Fresh Prince of Baklava.” With Anushka launching her product and Walleed already having an established base, the duo decided it was the perfect time to collaborate. “We’re doing our own products, but we’re going to share a tent, share the love and help each other get through it,” Anushka said. Watch the great migration Bird is the word at the Western Treatment Plant in Werribee. In the coming weeks, tens of thousands of migratory birds will flock to the plant. The Melbourne Water site is a magnet for birds due to the variety of the wetlands, the permanent, nutrient-rich water supply and the relative quiet of the site. With 284 different bird species recorded, hailing from south-eastern Australia, New Zealand and eastern Asia, the plant is one of the nation’s most popular birdwatching spots.

Melbourne Water’s principal biodiversity scientist, William Steele, said that now is a good time for birdwatchers, also known as ‘twitchers’, to visit the Western Treatment Plant and its shoreline, to see thousands of migratory shorebirds foraging over mudflats and waterfowl on the lagoons. “Some of the migratory species, like the red-necked stint, sharp-tailed sandpiper and curlew sandpiper, fly around 12,000 kilometres from their breeding grounds up in Siberia to enjoy the unique conditions we have at the

treatment plant,” Dr Steele said. “Migratory shorebirds need shallow intertidal mudflats or our managed habitat ponds to feed as efficiently as possible, and they need quiet roosting areas where they can rest safe from disturbance. “The migration of so many birds from so far away is quite remarkable and we encourage the public to take any opportunity to visit the site.” Anyone wanting to birdwatch at the Western Treatment Plant must first apply for a permit via melbournewater.com.au.

Point Cook park gets a makeover A nature play area and basketball court are some of the new features which will be installed at a Point Cook park as part of a $400,000 makeover. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw and Cr Peter Maynard joined Altona MP Jill Hennessy to commemorate the start of construction at Friar Place Park earlier this month. The $400,000 park upgrade project has been jointly funded by the council and the state government, with the government contributing a $200,000 grant through the Growing Suburbs Fund. Cr Mia Shaw said new features at the park would also include more trees, new swings and a see-saw. “Our nature-based play areas include trees children can climb, plants they can touch and logs they can balance on, allowing children to go back to basics and get their hands dirty,” she said. “The new trees will not only provide shade but make the park a more relaxing, calming place to spend time in. “Furthermore, a new footpath surrounding the park will mean that residents of all age groups can get their daily steps up and exercise in a pleasant environment.” The park project is due to be completed in March next year. Service sparks award A Wyndham businessman has been recognised with a national award. Andrew Stubbs, from Battery World Hoppers Crossing, received the Roadside Excellence and Initiative award at Battery World’s recent annual excellence awards night. Mr Stubbs was presented with his award in front of more than 200 Battery World franchisees, management and suppliers. Sam’s story of sobriety By Goya Dmytryshchak Sam* wanted to stop, but couldn’t. The 32-year-old, who has been sober for two and half years, says he sought out Alcoholics Anonymous after trying to control his drinking on his own but ending up drinking more. “I guess some early signs of my drinking potentially being a problem were blackouts … and just really bad hangovers forming for a day or two, but all of which could still be excused within what others are doing and the Australian drinking culture,” Sam said. “I was increasingly finding everyday life difficult. Things like getting and holding down a job, study. Relationships were starting to become frayed. “Anxiety, which I had always suffered from to some extent, was exacerbated by my drinking and occasional drug use.” Sam says he didn’t hit any particular rock bottom but he realised alcohol was the cause of a lot of problems in his life. “What made it clear that I had a real problem with alcohol was when I made that connection and I made a conscious decision to stop drinking, I couldn’t,” Sam said. “I was unable to, on my own, manage any prolonged period of abstinence. “The worst … would be, I’ll have a couple of drinks on a Friday night after work and then the next thing I know is it’s Saturday afternoon and I haven’t slept, and that’s involved several nightclubs, probably getting kicked out of one, and then finding a party or someone’s house to go back to and drink. “People who knew me probably didn’t suspect that I had a drinking problem because it wasn’t like I was drinking every single day or every single night – my problem is that once I start I can’t stop.”

Sam said after a roller coaster of abstaining for a while and then drinking uncontrollably, he was exhausted and desperate. “One Sunday, I hadn’t had a drink for six or seven days since the previous weekend, which had been another low point, and something occurred to me … I think it was the realisation that nothing’s gonna change unless I seek help,” he said. “I found the number for one of the Melbourne offices of AA on Google and that Sunday morning when I thought, I need some help here, called up.” That night, he says despite feeling

apprehensive, he attended his first meeting. “I remember it being quite a profound experience because immediately you had people talking about what had been my experience up until that point,” Sam said. “There was an immediate sense of relief, and hope as well, because they were talking about being sober now and not needing to drink anymore.” Two and a half years sober, Sam is now a ‘sponsor’ – or mentor, for others. “The most meaningful difference it has made is to my now wife – for her to have someone who is reliable, is consistent, doesn’t lie about

where they’ve been or what they’ve done,” he said. “That’s made an immeasurable difference and probably saved our relationship. “If you think you’ve got a problem with drinking, what have you got to lose to come to AA and give it a shot?” Regular meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous are held at Werribee, old shire offices, corner ofDuncan Road and Watton Street on Sundays at 10.30am and Fridays at 7pm. Man jailed for stabbing death By Benjamin Millar A man with a lengthy history of violent and criminal behavior has been jailed for more than 10 years over the stabbing death of a man in West Footscray in 2017. Cody Frost, 37, claimed he was defending himself when he stabbed Marcus Rowley, 24, outside Tottenham railway station on August 5, 2017. A Supreme Court jury found Frost not guilty of murder over the stabbing, but found he

was guilty of manslaughter. The New Zealand national is likely to be deported upon his release. The court heard Frost boarded a city-bound train at St Albans with a female friend, travelling in the same carriage as Mr Rowley. Witnesses said Mr Rowley was swearing, harassing others and clearly drunk, swigging from a bottle of Jim Beam. The three passengers alighted at Tottenham station, where Mr Rowley asked the pair to give him a cigarette.

Frost gave Rowley his last cigarette and walked with his friend down to the Ashley Street underpass. Mr Rowley followed the pair despite Frost repeatedly asking him to “leave us alone” and “get away”. The court heard that Frost then turned and confronted Mr Rowley, pulling a large knife. Justice James Elliot told the Supreme Court Frost’s response was “violent and disproportionate” as he stabbed Mr Rowley below the armpit, piercing his right lung. Frost left the scene, leaving Mr Rowley to

bleed to death on the roadway. When his friend saw news of the death in the media the next day, she confronted Frost, who turned himself in to Footscray police station. Justice Elliot sentenced Frost to 10 years and six months in prison, noting his criminal history included intentionally causing serious injury, possessing a handgun and various drugs offences. He will be eligible for parole in seven years and nine months and could be released in 2024, having already served 795 days.

Student of the law A Braybrook student is well on his way to achieving his career goals and changing perceptions. Year 12 student Vike Martin Ashien has recently completed a School-Based Apprenticeship Training (SBAT) program with Sunshine Police. Vike spent each Monday with Sunshine Police for 12 months, learning what’s required to be an officer. He said the experience made him even more determined to become a police officer. “What appeals to me most is the idea of bringing communities together to achieve social cohesion,” he said. “It was a great experience, meeting lots of police and seeing how they do their job. “I thought police were serious all the time, but knowing them better and seeing them joke around showed me they’re just like everyone else.” He said he hopes his Sudanese background

will help break down barriers. “Being an African student, the reputation we’ve gained isn’t a great one, so I want to be able to restore that and help people realise we’re good people as well. “It’s an unfair reputation, it’s pretty much judging a book by its cover.” Vike is currently completing his year 12 studies and next year hopes to go to Victoria University before applying to join the force. “I want to go to university first and study criminal justice and after that I’d like to do a little travel,” he said. “It’s about getting a bit of life experience up before I apply.” Tate Papworth

MY WYNDHAM Judy Teuma and Tony Graham are both members of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club Australia Chapter 10, the local branch of a national club for riders who have a connection to firefighting. The club will hold a PJ Run on Saturday, November 2, in aid of a family violence response centre. Judy and Tony speak with Alesha Capone.

Judy: Last year, we held the PJ Run for the first time. We collected 133 pairs of PJs, which were all donated to the Safe Steps family violence response centre, for women and children who stay there, and also raised $400 for the centre. We were also on the Channel 7 and Channel 9 news. This year will be the second time we’re holding the PJ Run. We’re starting at MacDonalds on the Western Ring Road in Sunshine, then riding to Docklands, then Gisborne and from Gisborne to the Phoenix Hotel in Point Cook. The hotel supports our annual fundraising poker run, so we support them be taking everyone back there for lunch. If motorcyclists want to join us at these different stages of the ride, we aim to meet at the Maccas at 8am and leave around 8.45am, get to Docklands around 9.15am, to be at Gisborne by 11-11.15am, leave by 12.15pm and we will arrive at the Phoenix no later than around 1.30pm. Has the community thrown their support behind the event? Judy: We’d like to send a big thank you to Mossfiel Primary School for their support, they

published details of the ride in their newsletter and also have a box at the school for people to put donations of pyjamas in. Tony: Anyone’s welcome to attend the ride, it’s only a social ride – not a race. What other fundraising activities does the club do? Tony: We will do a poker run on February 15 next year, to raise money for the Werribee Mercy Hospital’s Children’s Ward. We will also have a Bon Jovi tribute band playing, at the Truganina Pony Club, as part of the event. We like to show people that all bikers aren’t crazy or bad people. We’re all local fireys, or were, so we raise money for the local community. The cost to participate in the PJ Run will be $10 for riders and $5 for pillions, funds raised will go towards the Safe Steps family violence response centre. Complaints by Werribee residents regarding blasting by the Readymix Concrete company situated in Wests Road have led to air vibration tests being conducted by the Department of Minerals and Energy. Readymix, in consultation with the department, has been investigating methods of reducing air vibration nuisance following readings of as high as 118dBL.

Gale force winds are believed to have caused the steel pillars of a multi-million dollar building at Hoppers Crossing to buckle and collapse, last Friday. Damage to the structure of the Linfox Coles-Myer distribution centre at Old Geelong Rd could not be estimated but some early media reports claimed the bill could reach about $500,000.

Point Cook Air Base will not be sold to fund Australia’s commitment to East Timor, the mayor, Councillor Frank Purcell, told the Banner last week. However, Point Cook is still slated for sale, and Wyndham council will back a group that emerged early this week as the frontrunner to purchase the historic site.

Western United midfielder Dario Jertec has been around the block long enough to know that losing is an inevitable part of football. While United’s 2-1 loss to Melbourne City was a bitter pill to swallow, Jertec and his teammates will look forward to their chance for redemption when they face Melbourne Victory in a much-anticipated derby at Marvel Stadium this Saturday night. “We’re playing for wins, but sometimes you lose, sometimes you’re not lucky, but this is football,” Jertec said. “We have a new chance, we’ll try to win and we’ll give all the best of ourselves to win.” Jertec, a 34-year-old Croatian with 17 years experience as a professional footballer, was encouraged by Western United’s second half

performance against Melbourne City. He believes his side did enough to claim points out of the contest, but they were ripped away by a striking master class from Melbourne City frontman Jamie Maclaren. “I think they were better [in the] first half, second half we were better, but they scored this last five minutes and they take three points,” Jertec said. Jertec has been a key cog in the Western United midfield, but he was critical of his own performance in the loss to Melbourne City. Like a number of his teammates, Jertec struggled to make an impact in the first half, but he was beginning to feed his forwards some delightful passes in the second half

before he was subbed off. With a point to prove, Jertec could be one to watch for United in the derby against Victory. “I’m a central midfielder and I have to create good passes for [Alessandro] Diamanti, for [Besart] Berisha, for Pana [Kone] if I’m behind him,” he said. “This is my job. “Today I didn’t be good, but next week I have a new chance. “Every week is [a] new game and I hope we’ll be better next week.” Western United will face Melbourne City at Marvel Stadium on Saturday at 7.30pm. United fails to fire By Lance Jenkinson Western United lacked the discipline and polish that it displayed in its first two A-League games and paid a heavy price with a 2-1 loss to a slicker 10-man Melbourne City in the derby at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong on Sunday night. United trailed by a goal at the break after a disappointing first half, but the Mark Rudan-coached side found a way back into the contest in the 66th minute when prolific striker Besart Berisha converted the penalty he drew following a harsh challenge from City defender Harrison Delbridge, who saw yellow for a second time and was given his marching orders. If United got the impression that it would be a little more comfortable playing with the man advantage, it proved a false dawn as Melbourne City found a spectacular winner through in-form striker Jamie Maclaren in the 85th minute. Maclaren, who finished with a double, was the difference between the two sides. Western United centre-back Andrew Durante described the loss as frustrating after his side had worked hard to get back into the contest and created the better chances in the second half. “It’s extremely disappointing we didn’t leave the home ground with at least a point,” Durante said. “I thought we had enough chances to at least finish the game a draw, but Maclaren is in some serious form at the moment and is scoring from all types of angles.” Not unlike the week before against Perth Glory, Western United came out of the blocks a little bit flat. Perhaps it had more to do with Melbourne City’s attacking intent on this occasion, but, either way, it was not what the 7042 spectators largely decked out in the green and black of United wanted to see. There were fleeting moments of excitement for United, in particular two chances that fell the way of Berisha. Attacking midfielder Alessandro Diamanti, who had quality touches all game for United, played in a nice through ball to Berisha in the 16th minute, but City defender Scott Galloway was quicker to react. Three minutes later, Diamanti whipped in a corner and Berisha’s powerfully struck header could only find the awaiting arms of City goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis. Aside from a chance just before half-time, when Diamanti put a free kick into the box and Scott McDonald’s header was parried away by Bouzanis, there was little else to get the United fans excited about. Melbourne City, though, played some breathtaking football and had a succession of chances, drawing a number of spectacular

The second half was more positive for Western United. United started to win their share of possession in the midfield and caused the City defence a few headaches with some dangerous balls into the front third. When Berisha netted from the penalty spot, it looked as though Western United had done

enough to weather the storm and could be on their way to victory. However, Maclaren’s spectacular goal meant all three points were heading to Melbourne City. Josh Brillante played a long hopeful ball and Maclaren had the speed to leave the United defence in his wake and power a shot to the right of Kurto that nestled into the far post. Western United cannot afford to dwell on the result with long-time A-League powerhouse Melbourne Victory on the horizon in a derby at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night. Both teams sit mid-table with four points each.

Western United centre-back Andrew Durante has formed a strong bond with fellow defenders Ersan Gulum and Connor Chapman in a short space of time. United has been fairly solid at the back, conceding just three goals in as many A-League games. While the form and numbers stack up for the trio, Durante is not resting on his laurels with pressure coming from within the squad. “Myself, Ersan and Connor have got a really good relationship,” he said. “There’s also good pressure on us from Brendan Hamill and [Aaron] Calver, who are excellent centre-backs as well. “We know that we need to perform if we want to keep our spot and that’s really good competition.” Durante has been a smart pick-up by Western United in its inaugural season. The experienced defender has been a calming influence in the heart of defence for United. The 37-year-old has also been a dependable distributor out of the back third. A former New Zealand international and stalwart of Wellington Phoenix, the Sydney-born Durante has enjoyed his first stint in Melbourne with Western United. “I feel really good and I’m enjoying my time,” he said. “I knew coming here what I was going to expect from working with [coach] Mark [Rudan] before. “It’s a great group of guys, a fantastic football club and I’m really proud to be a part of it. “So far I’m loving life here in Melbourne.” Durante is adamant that Western United is built for sustainable long term success. “It’s only going to get better,” he said. “The more we can get good results, it’s going to grow. “It’s a really special football club and they’re doing all the right things on and off the park. “It’ll take time, but I think we’re doing all the right things.” Lance Jenkinson 45 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 30, 2019

Werribee will head into its Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association one-day clash against Mount Waverley at Mount Waverley Reserve on Saturday with much to ponder at the selection table. The Tigers will be without star all-rounder James Freeman, who is unavailable for selection. Tigers captain-coach Tim O’Brien said the selectors will determine on Thursday night whether to bolster their batting line-up or bowling attack. “We’ll do what’s best for team balance with it being a one-day game,” he said. “We’ve just got to work out if we’ll go more of a batting option or a bowling option.

“I’m sure someone will step up and fill the void that we’ll be missing with him.” Werribee is well placed for a re-shuffle through the ranks. The Tigers have enviable depth throughout the grades, including a number of players knocking on the door of first XI selection. Cats mourn a great man By Lance Jenkinson Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club is mourning the death of Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association first XI player Bryce Stuart. Stuart went missing on Friday night, but players and supporters of the Cats arrived at Hogans Road Reserve for their match against Werribee on Saturday hopeful he would make it in time to play. The hours went by and still there was no sign of Stuart, but, about 2pm, the club received the worst possible news that his body had been found by Victoria Police. A shattered Cats president Jake Porter immediately called off all six of his club’s senior games and supporters of the club gathered to grieve. “A lot of us were there on the Saturday talking, crying and sharing stories, and supporting the family,” Porter said. “The same thing on Sunday, there was another group that went down to the club and spent some time together and banded together.” Stuart was a long-time member of Hoppers Crossing. The 29-year-old spent most of his sporting life with the Cats, playing junior cricket before graduating to the seniors. In 2018, Stuart broke into the Cats’ first XI and built a reputation as dangerous left arm quick with a unique bowling style. “In the past couple of years, he got his opportunity in the first XI and he grabbed it with both hands,” Porter said. Stuart will be dearly missed at Hoppers Crossing. His humour and generosity made him a much-loved figure at Hogans Road. “We’re going to miss his laugh,” Porter said. “He had the ability to go into a room and light it up with his humour and start conversations. “We spoke about it on Saturday, the club, for a lot of us it’s a family. “He’s a significant part of that family. “It’s going to be a huge loss. “He was a great man.” Stuart’s best trait was his caring for others. If someone needed to talk to in a tough time, the Hoppers Crossing resident would lend an ear. Only seldomly did Stuart post to his Twitter account, but one of the most recent tweets in his timeline was offering support to Australian captain Steve Smith after the ball tampering affair, which he tweeted: ‘Hold your head high mate, you made a mistake and you will get past this’. “He’s a bloke with a heart of gold and will do anything for anyone,” Porter said. “I know he has been a confidant for people, he’s taken people’s feelings and what’s been going on in their lives on board, but probably what’s happened here is that he hasn’t felt that he can do that and share how he’s feeling. “He was very much about others all the time and probably not thinking sometimes about himself enough.” The Stuart family, including dad, Dennis, mum, Christine, and younger brother Kieran, have urged people to talk about negative feelings they might be experiencing. 46 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 30, 2019

It’s something to think about during the week.” There is positive energy around Werribee early in the season. At least the Warriors got to spend some time in the middle, posting an entertaining 7-209 off 29 overs, with Navdeep Purba (87 off 65) and Sarwan Kumar (64 off 44) producing some exhilarating cricket. Williamstown Imperials finished on 1-36 when play was called off. In division 4, Wyndhamvale’s match was completed, but it lost to St Andrews by five wickets at Pennell Reserve.

Werribee’s opening month has been one to savour in the Bowls Victoria division 1. The Bees made it three wins from four starts in a 91-82 win over Essendon on the road at Windy Hill on Saturday. It was an important result for the Bees to get back on track after tasting their first defeat seven days earlier. Werribee will host Blackburn in a third-versus-fourth showdown at the Bee Hive on Saturday. In division 2, Hoppers had an October to forget, losing all four of its matches. Hoppers was pipped 71-65 away to Bacchus Marsh on Saturday. They will be looking for their first win of the season in a local derby against Werribee (2) on Saturday.
