United off to flying start Western United is off and running in its inaugural A-League season, claiming a 1-0 victory over Wellington on Sunday. Head coach Mark Rudan said it was pleasing to be playing games for points, after a long build-up establishing the club in the west of Melbourne. “As a new club we’ve been working tirelessly behind the scenes to build this football club, but now we start to rock and roll,” Rudan said. “It’s been a good response from the … community, particularly the first three practise games at Caroline Springs which exceeded our expectations in terms of the people who supported the football club or wanted to find out what we’re all about. “We’re working very hard away from the football field to connect with the community.” Rudan said showing the western region what the club was about was a big focus in its early days. The club has a current membership base of just over 2500 and is hoping to double that in its first season. Cold on complaints By Esther Lauaki Wyndham council is one of just five Melbourne councils which failed to provide complaints data to a recent Victorian ombudsman’s report. The ombudsman surveyed all local governments to determine how they define complaints and how many complaints they received in the past calendar year, among other things. The survey found Wyndham council received 20,491 “requests for service”, but the number of complaints was not supplied because of

limitations in its reporting systems. “We cannot supply accurate data for complaints,” a Wyndham council spokesperson told the ombudsman. “Some channels are not captured in our database, however a new policy and system configuration will soon provide this. “We are not confident of current numbers being reported.” In Wyndham, if complainants are dissatisfied with the outcome of their complaint and request an internal review, the review would be conducted by a senior officer who was not

previously involved in the matter. Victorian ombudsman Deborah Glass said many councils were understating the number of complaints they receive, raising concerns about how they deal with dissatisfaction from the community. “Far too many councils still adopt a narrow definition of complaint or interpret it narrowly in practice,” Ms Glass said. “Not only is it impossible to compare the councils, those who understate the level of public dissatisfaction may well be failing to deal with it.” Ms Glass said one of the main causes of

complaints about councils to her office was the way councils dealt with complaints. “All too often complaints are seen as a nuisance, or provoke a defensive, unhelpful, bureaucratic response,” she said. “Complaints are actually a good thing – they are free feedback. “Whether about a missed bin, blocked drain, rates notice or parking ticket, they say something about council services. “Capturing them as complaints allows councils to consider what may be needed to address systemic patterns of dissatisfaction.”

Wyndham faces weighty issue By Esther Lauaki More than 70 per cent of Wyndham residents are obese or overweight, new figures show. The Australian Health Tracker data, released last week by the Mitchell Institute ahead of World Obesity Day, revealed that about 44,000 (31 per cent) of people living in the local government area were classified as obese. The tracker showed the rate of obesity varied dramatically across the country and aimed to highlight the impact of where people live and wealth on people’s health.

Wyndham’s rate of obesity ranked 11th in the state – Melton and Moorabool had the highest rates. Rosemary Calder, of the health policy think tank at the Mitchell Institute, said action was needed to focus prevention strategies in the most disadvantaged communities. “We have spent too long as a nation expecting individuals to be able to change their behaviour to reduce their weight,” Professor Calder said. “However, the evidence is very clear that this has little chance of success without a very strong focus on the environmental factors in

the places where we live that contribute to poor nutrition and inactivity.” She said places with the highest rates of obesity, also had much higher rates of smoking, inactivity and chronic illness and are largely low-socioeconomic communities, highlighting the impact of poverty on health. She said low socio-economic communities, often new suburbs and regional areas, seldom had the physical infrastructure to support healthy lifestyles. Professor Calder said that Victoria’s wealthy city suburbs had the lowest rates of obesity.

“[City] suburbs are usually green and leafy, with more space dedicated to parks, gardens and recreational facilities. They often are well serviced by public transport, bike paths and are relatively close to where people work which enables people to be physically active in their commute … rather than relying on the car. “Local governments are critical to local planning and the creation of healthy and active spaces for their residents … however, they are often hampered by lack of funding and regulatory power.” Details: mitchellinstitute.org.au/

Hops helps those hard of hearing which includes Wyndham, said there was a lot of demand for the dogs. There is a two-year waiting list for people hoping to receive a dog, and training just one Hearing Assistance Dog costs $37,000. Mrs Baade said that while the organisation breeds dogs, they also rescue many from shelters and train them to become Hearing Assistance Dogs. Ms Prescott said Hops, an eight-year-old shih tzu and wire-haired terrier cross, originally came from an animal welfare sanctuary in Adelaide. Ms Prescott said it took about four

Wyndham council issued 2381 building site infringements between July last year and June this year. The council’s director of city operations, Stephen Thorpe, said: “Wyndham City monitors building sites closely as lack of compliance can result in risks to safety as well as environmental and amenity impacts from storm water contamination and building site litter.” Mr Thorpe said council officers proactively patrolled building sites and responded to reports of unsightly or unsafe sites. “While most building site supervisors keep properly maintain sites, we sometimes have to remind them of their obligations when it comes to fencing, provision of onsite toilet facilities, and rubbish disposal,” he said. “In some instances, infringements are issued. “In 2018-19 council has issued 2381 building site infringements – down from 2700 the previous year – and the most common reasons for these fines were insufficient fencing to secure the site and not providing an adequate rubbish facility.” The council also received 4107 reports of litter during the 2018-19 financial year. This was a 20 per cent increase on litter fines issued by the council during the 2017-18 financial year. The council also collected 767 tonnes of litter and illegally dumped items from across the municipality in the latest financial year, compared to 2480 tonnes within the previous 12 months. Khan to sell former dairy site By Alesha Capone Wyndham councillor and developer Intaj Khan is selling a major commercial site in Werribee, which is presently occupied by Gordon TAFE. Cr Khan said he was hoping to achieve a minimum price of at least $5 million for 180 Princes Highway, which is located within the East Werribee Employment Precinct. The land, which measures 6001 square metres, was formerly owned by Dairy

Innovation Australia Limited (DIAL) which provides technical and research services to the dairy and food manufacturing industry. At present, the site is occupied by Gordon TAFE, Victoria’s largest regional stand-alone TAFE. Cr Khan said he believed it was now “the right time” to sell the property, due to Werribee’s growth. Werribee’s population is forecast to grow 42 per cent by 2036, making it one of Australia’s

fastest-growing regions. The buildings at the Princes Highway site consist of a modern office and laboratory facility measuring 2088 square metres, with 41 on-site car spaces. The site is presently 60 per cent leased. Remaining tenancies measure between 55 square metres and 900 square metres. The Princes HiIghway land will be sold through Raine and Horne Commercial. In February, the Australian Financial Review

(AFR) reported that Cr Khan was also selling four parcels of land located in Rockbank, at 288-310 Paynes Road, 1053-1083 Mount Cottrell Road and 3 and 5 Iramoo Circuit in Thornhill Park, ranging in size from 13.5 to 18.5 hectares. Cr Khan told the AFR he was selling the sites to fund the development of Mount Aliza estate, a 78-lot land-subdivision at 845 Mount Cottrell Road. Cr Khan also said he was planning to develop a hotel upon land he owns within Melbourne’s CBD.

Cheese to please New Year’s resolutions may still be a few months away, but the time to learn a new skill is this week as the Melton Lifelong Learning Festival hits town. The annual festival kicks off this Friday, and will feature more than 200 free events designed to spark the imagination and help residents pick up some new skills. swimming pools and community hubs. It’s a fun, fulfilling and hands-on approach to learning that everyone can enjoy,” Cr Carli said. “This is your chance to try something that’s always interested you, or challenge yourself by discovering something you may never have considered before. “The best part is many of the activities will continue beyond the festival, opening up new possibilities for ongoing learning, building friendships and maybe even a hobby for life.” The festival will be launched at 10.30am on October 18, on the lawn outside the Melton Library and Learning Hub. Liquor store up for auction A liquor store in the heart of Werribee is expected to sell for about $5.5 million when it is auctioned later this month. First Choice Liquor Market, which is located at 29-33 Synnot Street, will be up for sale at Burgess Rawson’s next portfolio auction in Melbourne on Wednesday, October 30. The property is leased to Coles Group on a seven-year agreement with eight five-year options. The 2543 square metre site, with 105 metres of street frontage, returns an annual rent of $318,000. Burgess Rawson director Billy Holderhead said the scarcity of large-format retail assets on the market, coupled with an “accessible price point”, meant the Werribee store could be popular with potential buyers. “Investors want single-tenanted freehold investments leased to groups such as Coles Group and it’s rare to have a fully refurbished, large-format liquor store on an important corner in Werribee,” Mr Holderhead said. Mr Holderhead said the site also had “significant future development potential”, with Werribee’s population predicted to grow by 88 per cent across the next two decades. “The Werribee CBD has been rezoned for intensive development to promote new housing and new employment opportunities with infrastructure already in place [in Werribee],” he said. Jamie Perlinger, also from Burgess Rawson, said the property was likely to attract buyers who were building up to owning a full-scale supermarket. “It’s almost like a stepping stone to owning a supermarket,” he said. The portfolio auction featuring the Werribee store will be held in Crown Casino’s River Room at 11am on Wednesday, October 30.

Phone tower gets green light A mobile phone tower will be constructed at Saltwater Reserve in Point Cook, despite Wyndham council receiving 110 objections to the proposal. The council last week approved a decision to allow the Vodafone Network to lease part of the reserve for a term of 20 years, for $24,000 per year, which will increase four per cent annually. Vodafone will lease 39 square metres of the reserve land, and install a 24-metre high phone tower and associated equipment at the site. During a public consultation period earlier this year the council received 110 objections from residents and land owners near the proposed tower. However, a council report stated that when the council held a town planning forum on the matter in June and invited all objectors to participate, only two people attended. The council report stated that the ground level equipment required for the phone tower “will take up a small footprint and will not impact on the use of Saltwater Reserve as a sporting park precinct”. Diwali lights up city Thousands of residents across Wyndham are set to celebrate the festival of Diwali this month. Diwali, which is traditionally celebrated from October to November by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists, is also known as the Festival of Lights. Trees coming to a street near you It’s tree time in Wyndham. Wyndham council plans to plant 7500 new trees across the municipality next year, under its 2020 Street Tree Planting Program. This program is being delivered as part of the council’s plan to have 12.5 per cent of the municipality covered by a tree canopy by 2022. Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said the council was also aiming to have “100 per cent of suitable nature strips” planted with a tree by 2040.

Cr Marcus said trees were an “immense asset to both the environment and community”. “They provide … shade to keep our houses and streets cool, wind protection, the reduction of stormwater run-off, pollution absorption, habitat for our local wildlife, and improve the look of our roads and streets,” Cr Marcus said. “Recent research shows Wyndham has a low canopy cover of 3.6 per cent, that’s half a per cent lower than other councils in the Melbourne region. “Letters have been sent to those residents who have a nature strip marked for a new tree and the sites will then be individually assessed for suitability. If the site is deemed suitable, residents will receive a brochure to confirm that they will be receiving a new tree in 2020.” To check if your street will be receiving new trees next year, visit the council’s interactive map at www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/treeplanting. Softball’s future stars By Alesha Capone Three youngsters from Tarneit have been selected to represent the state in a softball competition next month. In November, twins Dallas and Violet, and their cousin Markus will head to a School Sport Australia competition in New South Wales. The trio will represent School Sport Victoria (SSV) on 12-and-under teams. Violet will play for the girls’ team, while Dallas and Markus will play on the boys’ team.

Violet also represented SSV on the team last year, and was selected as an emergency player the year before. She said that after playing in the two previous competitions, she hoped to be announced as a team captain or co-captain this year. “For the upcoming competition, I’m looking forward to seeing friends I versed last year who are still old enough to play and hopefully leading the team,” she said. Violet said is hoping to become a professional softball player in the future, following in the

Ovals at Chirnside and Galvin parks will be greener than ever. The two Werribee sports ovals will be resurfaced to make them environmentally sustainable. Wyndham council is spending $2.4 million to replace the playing surfaces with a natural grass that requires less water to stay green. Environment and sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said the grass, called Santa Ana, would ensure the ovals are resilient to Melbourne’s scorching summer heat. “With much of Australia experiencing a drought, Wyndham council is committed to being vigilant with our water use and doing all we can to preserve this precious resource,” Cr Marcus said. “We know Wyndham residents care deeply about climate change and want us to do all we can to reduce our impact on the environment – these projects will do just that.” Cr Marcus said the soil and turf being replaced at the Chirnside Park oval would be gifted to Victoria University, to be used at sports facilities at its Werribee campus. Construction for both ovals has started, with Chirnside Park oval due to be completed in December and Galvin Park oval to be finished in March 2020. A Werribee teen’s NRL dreams are about to become reality. Rugby league up-and-comer Rory Togiatu this month signed a three year deal with professional club Illawarra Dragons in New South Wales. The 17-year-old, who moved through the grades at Werribee Bears Rugby League Club, will move interstate next month to pursue his footy dreams. “It has been a long [road] but very much worth the wait,” Togiatu said. “A big thank you to everyone who supported me and my goals and had faith in me and my talent … All the love and support won’t be forgotten.” Werribee Bears president Jarrod Buchanan

Call for action over intersection By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has stepped up its campaign to get traffic lights installed at a notorious Point Cook intersection. The council unanimously passed a motion put forward by Cr Kim McAliney last week, to ask for meetings with Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan and Minister for Roads and Road Safety Jaala Pulford, in regards to the Point Cook and Sneydes road intersection. Cr McAliney’s motion said the council

wanted to meet with the ministers, to request the state government commit to funding its share of the cost of installing signals at the intersection. Wyndham council has already committed $250,000 to the project. The council is responsible for Sneydes Road, while the state government is responsible for Point Cook Road. Cr McAliney said the council had spent more than two years lobbying the state government on the issue. She said last month the council received a letter from the Department

of Transport confirming that a funding commitment “would not be made at this time”. Cr McAliney said the letter was “disappointing”. “I can’t believe that years later we are still waiting for the state government to come to the party – to be honest, everyone would agree enough is enough,” she said. Cr Tony Hooper said it was “insane” for drivers trying to turn right at the intersection. “It’s high time the state government stepped up and actually contributed it’s part to what we’re trying to do,” he said.

Cr Josh Gillian described the intersection as “do or die” and said he was “surprised” there had not been a fatality at the site. Point Cook Action Group (PCAG) president Bob Fairclough said the intersection “is one of the most dangerous intersections in Point Cook with frequent accidents being reported – some involving serious injuries”. “Many residents have stated that they feel like they are taking their life in their hands at this intersection,” he said. The Department of Transport was contacted for comment.

Daniher’s drive delivers Former AFL great Neale Daniher brought the fight for a cure for Motor Neurone Disease to Wyndham last week. Mr Daniher – who is the face of the Fight MND campaign – launched the annual Daniher’s Drive on Thursday from Werribee Open Range Zoo. The tour takes in the Surf Coast, Central Victoria and the Yarra Valley, before finishing on the Mornington Peninsula. In honour of the launch, the state government made a $1 million donation towards the cause. Mr Daniher welcomed the funding announcement – which took the state’s total contribution to the fight against MND to $5million since 2015. “The premier has been a great supporter of Daniher’s Drive and FightMND, it’s terrific to have his support,” he said. “A million dollars is an incredible number and we are very appreciative of him getting behind the fight to

find treatments and a cure. This is amazing … The fight doesn’t stop here though, Victorians and Australians in general have been so generous – that’s why we do the drive to get out into the communities and thank them.” First held in 2015, Daniher’s Drive has raised more than $7 million to aide the fight against MND – and event organisers hope to take that tally to more than $10 million this year. Premier Daniel Andrews said he was proud to support Mr Daniher in his drive to find a cure. “The difference he has made to thousands of Australians with MND is almost incalculable, and all while facing this insidious disease,” Mr Andrews said. “As Neale often says, motor neurone disease is a beast, but thanks to his bravery and the generosity of so many Victorians, we will one day find a cure.” Esther Lauaki

Baltic festival belongs The Finnish Society of Melbourne is this month hosting the 15th annual Baltic Festival at Altona. The festival celebrates the cultures of the Baltic nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Jeffery McDougall said that since the Finnish Society was hosting this year’s festival, most of the food and beverages would be from the host nation. “We’ve got Finnish meat pies – they call it lihapiirakka,” he said. “There’s going to be pulla cinnamon sweet rolls. There will be beverages from the bar. Again, since we’re hosting it, most of the beverages will be Finnish or Australian. “One of the popular drinks that the Finnish people have is called lonkero, and that’s a flavoured gin in a can.”

“There’ll be a concert where people can see the different choirs and folk-dancing groups and cultural performances.” Tuire Karaharju-Huisman said the festival started 15 years ago at Altona’s Finnish Hall with the theme of “Sounds of the ocean”. “We had great participation then and it is wonderful that we are still going strong and have many groups of young people also taking part,” she said. First responder praised By Goya Dmytryshchak When Newport’s Tony Walker became a paramedic almost 34 years ago, he said mental health wasn’t discussed. “Regarding the difficult cases you did, you pretty much were expected to just suck it up,” he said. Five years ago, Mr Walker became Ambulance Victoria’s chief executive officer and made it his job to improve the mental health and wellbeing of first responders. He has been named as one of seven finalists for the University of New South Wales’ Australian Mental Health Prize.

Mr Walker said the wake-up call was when he learned paramedics were four times more likely to suicide than the general community and three times more likely than any other Victorian emergency services member. “It was interesting talking to some of my colleagues who have been in the job about the same time as me or longer at their retirement,” he said. “They’d go down the pub every Friday night and get drunk with a police officer to deal with the issues they may have experienced collectively during that week … and that was often the way. “People would self medicate, they may take sick leave or they leave the job, and in many cases they’ve never admitted they’ve had a mental health injury associated with the job because it was just never spoken about.”

Mr Walker said talking about mental health helped break down the stigma, and shared a story of his own. “I remarried a few years back and I’ve got a little four year-old daughter,” he said. “When she was very small, I found myself very uncomfortable bathing her by myself … and it related to some cases I’d attended early

in my career that never caused me an issue at the time. “There was just this underlying sense of anxiety that once I was able to shine a bit of a light on – I see a psychologist regularly because I’ve learnt that’s a good thing to do – I was able to work that through and understood what it was and it’s been fine since.”

Pet owners taken to court Wyndham council has successfully prosecuted 23 pet owners for failing to abide by animal-related legislation in the 2018-19 financial year. The council’s director of city operations, Stephen Thorpe, said some of the pet owners faced multiple charges. “Of those found guilty for animal-related offences in the past financial year, there were three serious attacks on humans and three on animals,” he said. “We had two charges for unregistered menacing dogs, 11 charges for unregistered dogs, and one for not registering their cat. “There were also four pet owners who were ordered by the court to comply with council’s directional notices and works orders to confine their animals. “The reason we took residents to court for failing to comply with council’s orders is because their dogs and cats were found on multiple occasions not confined to their owner’s property.” Mr Thorpe said the fines handed out by the court to pet owners ranged from $322 up to $4800, plus out-of-pocket expenses for victims, council costs for holding dogs and court fees. “We deal with most animal-related … breaches by educating residents on how they should be managing their animals and issuing infringement when necessary, however with serious dog attacks, the court must decide whether the dog owner is guilty or not.” Alesha Capone

Sports at home on the grange By Esther Lauaki The Grange Community Centre and its surrounding sports fields are getting a facelift. A $3.75 million upgrade will include three new rooms at the community centre, accessible changerooms in the soccer pavilion, sports lights at field one and a new playing surface for field two. The state government pitched in $1.65 million for the upgrade, with Wyndham council footing the rest. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said the three

Maynard said. “The new sports lights on field one will enable matches to be played there at night, while the resurfacing of field two will mean this area can be used once more for training and matches. “Fields can be used by the wider community to exercise and stay active all year round.” Construction for The Grange Community Centre is under way and is expected to be completed in September 2020. Top grades for Lucas A young dancer from the Point Cook Performing Arts studio has won three prestigious ballet awards. Nine-year-old Lucas took part in the Audrey Nicholls Grade Awards, at the Australian Ballet studios in Melbourne last month. The awards featured about 275 students, who showcased exercises and dances they had performed in recent Royal Academy of Dance examinations. Lucas said that he received first place for Grade 2 students; the overall boys Project B Award for grades 1-5; and the Audrey Nicholls Most Potential award for grades 1-3. “I was very, very excited as I hadn’t done Audrey Nicholls before and didn’t think I would get anything,” Lucas said. “I have received a few first places and other awards at some smaller competitions but have never won anything like this before.” Lucas, who does seven hours of dance

training every week, said he took up dancing about five years ago. “I was a bit shy when I was four and didn’t do any activities but I saw the other students having fun in class and thought I would like to try,” he said. “I love performing on stage and learning new harder steps as I go up the levels. “I do lots of styles including jazz, tap, hip hop and contemporary.” Lucas said his mother Genevieve, who runs Point Cook Performing Arts, has also given him plenty of good advice about dancing competitions. “My mum has always said, ‘Try your best and it doesn’t matter what you place’,” he said. MY WYNDHAM What’s your connection to Wyndham? I accepted a promotion with my work with the federal government in 1978 and moved from Warrnambool to Werribee.

If you have ever toured Werribee Open Range Zoo, chances are, you have met Adrian Aloonan. The safari guide talks to Esther Lauaki.

How long have you lived in the area? Since we built our home in 1980. What are you passionate about? The environment. How long have you served in your role for the Werribee Open Range Zoo? I’ve had this job for 24 years. Tell us briefly how you became involved with the zoo and what your role involves. After I took early retirement from the federal government, I commenced teaching at VUT TAFE Werribee in tourism studies. I then became aware that Werribee Zoo required casual tour guides. My role involves conducting day tours for the general public, specialised tours and hosting overnight accommodation. What’s the best part of your role? Introducing visitors to our grasslands environment and its inhabitants. What other hats do you wear in the Wyndham community? Committee member U3A Werribee.

The final recommendations of consultants who have been studying better use of railway land in Werribee will be presented to the council today. The area under examination is the railway land both sides of the land from Skeleton Creek in the east to Lollipop Creek in the west.

Werribee Open Day gives sneak peak into animal hospital The redeveloped U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital and University of Melbourne veterinary campus will open to the public on Sunday, October 20.

Head of the Melbourne Veterinary School Professor Anna Meredith says the day is an exciting opportunity for the Wyndham community to explore the new buildings.

The open day will allow the community to explore the world-class site, research and opportunities for veterinary education and will feature a range of free activities and things to see, including self-guided tours of the hospital’s new facilities.

“We are all increasingly aware of the important links between our health and the health of our animals,” Professor Meredith said.

There will also be interactive displays and demonstrations, as well as information sessions on pet health and course advice.

“Wildlife and production animals make our lives richer, and keeping them healthy is an important part of the role of veterinarians in society too.

Melbourne is the only university to offer a veterinary medicine degree in Victoria. Potential students interested in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program can talk to current students, course advisors, and lecturers during the open day. Information regarding other careers in the animal industry will also be available.

“Werribee Open Day will be a fantastic opportunity for the community to see our wonderful new facilities firsthand and find out how they can play a role in keeping our society and our animals healthy and happy through veterinary medicine and research.”

The U-Vet Animal Hospital was renovated in 2018, and Werribee Open Day will allow visitors to get a behind-thescenes look at its new consultation rooms and facilities for day procedures, diagnostic imaging, rehabilitation and pain management. Guests will also be able to explore Werribee’s new four-storey veterinary Learning and Teaching Building, including its teaching spaces, high-quality surgical teaching facilities, laboratories, library and cafe.

Celebrate Diwali with us Celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Newar Buddhists, the popular Diwali festival represents the symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. This year, Diwali begins on October 27 and runs typically for five days, with the climax (main Diwali) occurring on the third day, coinciding with the darkest night of the Hindu lunisolar month Kartika. In the lead-up to Diwali, celebrants clean, renovate and decorate their homes and workplaces. During the climax, they put on their best clothes (often new) and light up their homes with oil lamps or candles, set off crackers, and offer worship to Lakshmi – the goddess of prosperity and wealth. During the major cultural festival, there’ll be joyful and delicious family feasts as well, with sweets (mithai) and gifts shared. The third day (climax) of Diwali is an official holiday in about a dozen countries. Rangoli is one popular Diwali tradition –– beautiful patterns made using colourful powders and flowers.

People draw rangoli on the floor by the entrance of their homes to welcome the gods and bring good luck. Colourful homemade “footprints of Lakshmi” may also be scattered throughout homes. The subcontinent’s diaspora in Australia ensures Diwali rich and centuries-long traditions continue, with many Australians of all persuasions eagerly joining in the colourful and exciting celebrations. It will be huge this year at Fed Square, 11am-10pm October 19, with live bands, authentic food stalls, drama and dance, and children’s activities – and loads more. And out west, Wyndham and Melton are celebrating Diwali from midday10pm at Presidents Park on November 9 and Hannah Watts Park on October 19.

When you’re investing in a building, not just a home Not only is apartment living convenient and low maintenance, it is also much more affordable than buying a house. But unlike purchasing a home, when you buy an apartment you’re not only buying a place to live, you’re investing in part ownership of a building. Here are some pitfalls to avoid before signing the dotted line. It’s not ticking all my boxes “First box to tick is good presentation and a well-maintained complex,” says interior designer Malvina Stone. “Aim for north-facing living spaces and an outlook. Check if the grounds are well-maintained, its proximity to cafes, shops and public transport, any shared community amenities and any outdoor space available for entertaining.” It doesn’t matter who built it “It’s always important,” says James Pagliaro from Ray White. “Research is key. Have a look at their previous developments. It will give you a good indication of the quality of yours.” There is no parking While a carpark can add to the price of your apartment, the lack of one could affect its resale. “There are pros and cons here, but for a building without off-street parking, contact the on-site managers regarding renting a space, or apply for on-street parking,” says Pagliaro. It doesn’t matter who my neighbours are Whether you are buying a house or a unit, there is always the danger of having a bad neighbour. “Observe how neighbouring apartments present,” says Stone. “If there is a high proportion of owner-occupiers in

Body corporate fees are very important to make note of before purchasing an apartment.” Strata manager? Never met her... Pagliaro says getting to know your strata manager is an essential step in pre-purchase research. “You don’t have to be best friends, but it is important to understand the building’s culture and how they resolve issues. The strata manager will be your first port of call for any issues and maintenance in common areas, as well as any questions about the building.” Request committee minutes for the past few years and consider previous conflicts as well as unresolved ones that could have an impact on you in the future. The interior is outdated If your potential apartment needs an overhaul, inquire with the body corporate first regarding its permission process and to ensure your plans are feasible. Consider any contributing factors that could affect your plans as well as day-to-day life, like the thickness of internal walls and size and structure of balconies. SPORT Young star soaks up the United excitement Ivan Vujica described the excitement surrounding the week leading up to Western United’s first ever game in the Hyundai A-League as one like no other in his career. Vujica is a well travelled young player, having featured in top level competitions in Australia, with the Newcastle Jets, and Croatia, with Lokomotiva Zagreb and Dinamo Zagreb, all before the age of 22. When Western United came calling in the off season, Vujica had no hesitation in making the move, knowing he would be going into a unique situation. Vujica is excited by the firsts that lay ahead with United and he experienced that in the lead-up to Sunday’s season-opening 1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix. “There’s always a buzz at the start of a season, but this is an extra type of buzz,” Vujica said. “It’s the first official game the club will play so the buzz is something very surreal. “We’re making history here and this is something you only get to do once and every club only gets to do it once.” Vujica was sold on the vision of Western United. The left back met with United coach Mark

Rudan before making the decision to move south from his hometown of Sydney. “What lured me here was the project and the vision the club had from the get go,” Vujica said. “That was something that straight away stuck with me when Mark spoke to me and I spoke with members of the board.” Vujica is excited to be a foundation player for Western United. He believes he and his United teammates can set the culture of the club from day one and that will hold the club in good stead forever more. “We’re the setting stone,” Vujica said. “We’re building the blocks of the club that will be set for the next 100 years or more. “It is special that we are the ones creating this and the next generations after this will take it on after us. “As coaches and players we’re all creating a culture and shaping the club how we want it to look for the future.” Before moving into a newly constructed football-specific stadium in Tarneit, Western United will play at least its first two seasons of home games in Geelong and Ballarat. Vujica is urging the western suburbs football supporters to go along for the ride and build

a strong supporter base before the team eventually arrives in Tarneit. He is eager to see the terraces at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong packed with supporters decked out in green and black for the home opener against Perth Glory on Saturday from 5pm.

“We can’t wait to play in front of our own fans,” Vujica said. “We’ve met a lot of our fans at the pre-season matches and we hope more of them come out and be that 12th man for us and help us during our campaign. “This can only happen once in a lifetime, so this is something you’ll want to see. “It will be an unbelievable experience for the players, for the fans, for everyone.” Vujica had to bide his time on the Western United bench for the season opener against Wellington. He has enjoyed every minute of the build-up to the season and is keen to get some playing time as soon as possible. “This is the next step in my career, which I thought was the right choice and I stand by that,” he said. “I’m learning every day through Mark Rudan and players like [Andrew] Durante and Ersan Gulum. “It’s great to be around players like this and [Alessandro] Diamanti and [Panagiotis] Kone. “They’re so experienced and for someone like myself, I can learn from them and I’m grateful to be a part of that.” Lance Jenkinson

Western United’s historic first win By Lance Jenkinson Western United has travelled across the ditch to claim its first ever points in the Hyundai A-League. In their debut game, United conquered Wellington Phoenix 1-0 in an arm wrestle at Westpac Stadium in Wellington on Sunday. Big name signing Besart Berisha, acquired only two weeks before the start of the season, scored United’s historic first goal in the 34th minute, which was the winning goal of the game. It was no shock to see Berisha on the scoresheet first, considering he is the top goalscorer in league history. Western United had the kick-off to start the game and settled into an early groove. United dominated on the ball with Dario Jertec and Panagiotis Kone controlling proceedings from the centre of the park. Jertec, a former Croatia under-21 international, was the most influential player on the park in the first half. Most of United’s positive attacks went through the 34-year-old Jertec, including the goal. Jertec unlocked the defence, playing a ball into the feet of left winger Connor Pain, allowing Pain to get in behind the defence. Pain found just enough space to put in a cross, which sailed over the crowd of players in the box and to the back post for United teammate Josh Risdon. With a neat first touch, Risdon re-directed the ball low and hard into the mixer to find Berisha, who instinctively guided it home with the inside of his right boot. It was a history-making moment that gave United its first lead. The lead was only possible because of United goalkeeper Filip Kurto, who moments earlier pulled off a superb diving save to deny a sweetly timed long range strike from Wellington’s Liberato Cacace. It was a save to savour for Kurto, a former Phoenix player who was subjected to jeers all game from the home crowd. Alessandro Diamanti made an impressive debut in the Western United captain’s arm band. Diamanti was a constant handful for the Wellington defence. The former Italian international added a touch of class to the United front third.

While Diamanti and Berisha were hard-working on the front line, Western United had its fair share of defending to do. In that respect, Andrew Durante, another former Phoenix player copping a few boos, Ersan Gulum and Connor Chapman stood firm. Durante was absolutely superb in the heart of the defence, detonating countless Phoenix forays forward and kick-starting United from the back. Western United deserved its one goal lead at the break. The second half had a different complexion to it, though. Wellington seemed to grow in confidence and played with more attacking flair.

While the Phoenix was on the front foot, Kurto was not tested as much as the hosts would have liked. The Phoenix’s best chance came through a rare indirect free kick late in the second half. The chance sailed over the crossbar and out of harms way for United. Holding a fragile one goal lead after 90 minutes, Western United still had plenty of work to do with the referee adding on seven minutes of stoppage time. A head clash which drew blood from Jertec added even more time on top of that stoppage time, so the game went beyond 100 minutes. With some fresh legs in substitutes Jonathan Aspropotamitis, Kwabena Appiah-Kubi and

Max Burgess, United saw off the threat. Scott McDonald was the pick of the United players in the second half. The former Socceroo was able to hold the ball up for his side under pressure and be the cool head required in a tight game. When the full-time whistle finally came, United coach Mark Rudan was smiling like a Cheshire cat, hugging his support staff and players in celebration. Now Western United will turn its attention to picking up its first points on Australian soil. Tigers prepare for local derby By Lance Jenkinson After dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s in a round one win over Croydon, Werribee quickly turned its attention to the local derby against Hoppers Crossing starting on Saturday in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The Tigers will have plenty to play for when they make the short trip to Hogans Road Reserve for one of the most anticipated clashes every season on the Wyndham cricket calendar. Tigers captain Tim O’Brien was not playing down the importance of the two-day battle of Wyndham. “That’s the local derby,” O’Brien said. “It’s starting to build that rivalry. “We’ve got the relationship with the Movember game we play against each other so we know a lot of their players and want to get the bragging rights over them.” Hoppers Crossing captain Justin Goegan was happy to play his part in building up the local stoush. Goegan sees Werribee as a big scalp for more reasons than one. “We always look forward to playing against Werribee,” Goegan said. “They’ve always been one of the better sides since we’ve been in the sub-district comp, so it’s always good to test yourselves against them. “There’s also a little bit of rivalry, so there’s nothing better than beating Werribee.” Werribee was fairly clinical in its victory over Croydon away at Croydon Park. The Tigers set up their victory on day one,

skittling Croydon for just 110. Jonathan Burton was the chief destroyer for Werribee with 4-17 off 14.1 overs. “He doesn’t miss his mark too often,” O’Brien said. “He’s definitely someone you can rely on with the ball.” Brad Apps was the other standout with the ball for Werribee with 3-21 off 10 overs. Apps took three crucial middle order wickets when Croydon appeared to be digging in. “Appsy just attacked the stumps,” O’Brien said. “He got some crucial wickets for us on the first day.” Starting day two at 1-49, Werribee did not exactly cruise to the target. The Tigers eventually got there with four wickets in hand, but did it with a little bit of a struggle. Adam Alifraco’s top-score of 36 all came on the first day. The patient Andrew Ford (23) and James Freeman (26 not out) were the standouts of the chase on day two. With 1-39 with the ball, Freeman had a solid all-round game, but was not helped out by his teammates or the umpires. “He had a couple of caught behinds not given out in the first innings and he had two dropped catches in his first over of the second dig,” O’Brien said. “He’s made a positive start to the year with both bat and ball. “He’s charging in pretty hard for us. “He’s fighting fit and ready to go this season.”

It was a big win for the Bees too, yielding 16 of a possible 18 points after taking out three of the four rinks. Werribee will host Glenroy in the third round back at the Bee Hive on Saturday.

The Cats were left disappointed after a four-wicket loss because they felt like a victory was there for the taking. After posting 187, the Cats had Melton in all sorts of trouble on 6-75 approaching the tea break. The halt in play also extinguished Hoppers Crossing’s momentum. Melton did not lose another wicket en route to victory. Matthew Stead (56 not out) and Dilshan Kanchana (58 not out) guided the visiting Lions across the line for a memorable win at Hogans Road Reserve. “Tea came at the wrong time for us,” Cats captain Justin Goegan said. “We took 5-10 leading up to tea, so we had all of the momentum. “After tea, they didn’t really give us a chance.” Brett Smith was far and away the best bowler for Hoppers Crossing. Smith toiled away manfully to take 2-33 off 16 overs. “First game to bowl 16 overs was a pretty big effort,” Goegan said. The spinners also did a power of work for Hoppers Crossing. Sanka Abeyruwan, who returned to the club after two seasons with Haig Fawkner, took 1-57 off 18 overs. Mitch Ellis, who had a breakout season last summer, bowled an economical 1-22 off 11. It was a big week for the Point Cook Football Club. The Bulldogs appointed former WRFL interleague coach Brett Jacobs as their new senior coach with Michael Boothey his senior assistant. On Sunday, former Point Cook player Scott McLaughlin conquered Mount Panorama, winning the Bathurst 1000 in his Ford Mustang GT. While McLaughlin is born in New Zealand, he is an avid Western Bulldogs supporter.

The Holden Colorado utility/pickup has been on sale in Australia since 2008 although, until 2012, it was simply a re-badged version of the long-serving and popular Isuzu built Rodeo. The current model is based on the Chevrolet Colorado which is designed in the US but built in Thailand. Utes have never been more popular in Australia with both the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger sitting at or near the top of all vehicle sales and Colorado in a respectable fourth and gaining ground despite the overall industry-wide decline. In dual-cab format the modern ute is effectively a crossover combining the functionality of a working vehicle with the comfort, space and drive standard of an SUV. Colorado comes with the choice of six variants: LS, LT, LSX, LTZ, LTZ+ and Z71. Prices range from $31,690 for an automatic LS 4x2 Single Cab cab chassis through to $57,190 for an auto Z71 4x4 Crew Cab. In between there are Single Cab and Space Cab utes, the latter with restricted rear seats.

Styling

Colorado is big, bold and brash with the top-spec models showing a style that’s clearly aimed at premium ute buyers including an alloy sports bar, 18-inch alloy wheels, chrome exterior door handles and exterior scalps.
