Station fight escalates By Alesha Capone A petition to install a lift or escalator at the Wallace Avenue end of Williams Landing train station is gaining momentum, as the station is named one of the busiest in Melbourne. Figures from the Department of Transport, released last week, show the number of passengers who travelled through Williams Landing station rose 171 per cent in five years – from 809,000 commuters in 2013-14 to 1.75 million commuters in 2018-19.

Williams Landing station experienced the fourth-largest increase in commuter numbers out of all Melbourne stations. Officer station experienced the largest growth in commuter numbers, from 19,000 train travellers in 2013-14 to 123,000 in 2018-19, an overall increase of 537 per cent. A Change.org petition has been started, calling for a lift or escalator to be installed at the Wallace Avenue end of Williams Landing station. The petition, started by Sanket Kakkad, is directed to Altona MP Jill Hennessy and has

been signed by more than 280 people. The station serves multiple suburbs including Point Cook and parts of Truganina and Hoppers Crossing. According to the petition, in order to access a ramp or lift leading to a Williams Landing station platform, train travellers entering at Wallace Avenue have to climb 57 steps, and then walk across a bridge. It’s described as “quite inconvenient” to people with a disability, pregnant women, senior citizens and people with heavy luggage.

The petition describes the ramp as “so long” that no one except cyclists use it. Although there is a lift near the station’s Altair-Woodbury streets entry, the petition states this “is not always convenient”. A state government spokesman said the lift at Altair Street allowed commuters at Williams Landing to reach both platforms. Ms Hennessy said: “I’ll continue working with the Minister for Public Transport to make sure everyone can access the station now and into the future”.

‘Super city’ could sway voters By Esther Lauaki Werribee’s safe Labor seat could be on shaky ground as a result of the scrapped “super-city” proposal, according to a recent poll. Polling of 500 voters in Tim Pallas’ seat of Werribee showed overwhelming support for the $30 billion Australian Education City. And 44 per cent of those surveyed over the phone in recent weeks said they would be less likely to vote for a local member who opposed the plan.

In July, the government withdrew its support for the proposal to build a hi-tech super city in the East Werribee Employment Precinct. The Australian Education City, driven by a consortium that had gained preferred bidder status, aimed to eventually create 90,000 new jobs and support 55,000 students and 70,000 residents with a new business district offering international education, training and research facilities. The consortium this month launched legal action to claim compensation as a result of the

project being overturned. OmniPoll Market Research co-partner Martin O’Shannessy said it was rare to see such clear results for a commercial issue. “This is a campaignable issue – the more people know about it [the super-city], the more they want it,” Mr O’Shannessy said. “It’s an important voting issue for these people … our poll said that voters were more likely to vote for a local member if they supported the education city, and it didn’t matter what their political persuasion was.”

Figures showed that just eight per cent of those surveyed would be likely to vote for their local member if they opposed the project. Of the respondents, 79 per cent believed that the Australian Education City should go ahead and regarded the proposal as an important issue. Mr Pallas held the seat of Werribee comfortably at last year’s state election, but there was an 11.2 per cent swing against him on primary votes, forcing the ALP to rely on preferences. Star Weekly contacted Tim Pallas for comment.

Wyndham council has warned that its officers are cracking down on unregistered and abandoned cars which have been dumped on public property. Wyndham’s safer city portfolio holder Cr Kim McAliney said that such vehicles could pose safety risks to the community. Cr McAliney said that during the last financial year, the council inspected 1252 abandoned vehicles.

“Sometimes residents leave cars that need repairing on the side of the road or parked outside their houses and this affects the pleasant aesthetic of the neighbourhood and creates opportunities for theft and vandalism,” she said. “Giving joyriders easier targets creates dangers on our streets and this risk must be targeted immediately. “There are also safety concerns to the community when cars on the side of the road create traffic disruption or vehicles without wheels are being propped up by bricks.” Cr McAliney said abandoned cars also took up parking spaces which could be used by legitimate road users. She said council officers were “clamping down on all unregistered and abandoned cars on council land”. “If they find an unsafe, unregistered, car it will be towed away immediately,” she said. “If a car has expired registration and is not in a state of disrepair, then a sticker will be placed on it warning the owner that it will be towed away.

“Owners will then have 21 days to collect their car from the impound lot and pay the $187 cost of towing and $11 storage fees fee, after that, it may be auctioned off or destroyed. “If a car is left on a road, nature strip or any council land for two months – even if registered

LEVEL CROSSING REMOVAL WORKS

An alarming increase in kitchen fires has spurred Truganina fire brigade to sound a warning to residents. Brigade spokeswoman Michele Abbott said crews attended five kitchen fires in five days at the end of last month. “The brigade has seen a big increase in the number of kitchen fires we are attending,” Ms Abbott said. “We are not sure why this is happening but it is a very worrying trend.” She said there are a number of precautions residents can take to stay safe in the kitchen. *Make sure there is a fire blanket handy in your kitchen. *Clean grease and oils from the splashback behind the stove or cooktop as well as from the rangehood filters. *Never leave flammable objects like paper towels or tea towels next to a working stove. *Always pay attention when cooking as fires can start and spread quickly. *Never throw water on a fat or oil fire.” Latest statistics released by the CFA for District 14, which takes in Werribee, Melton, Brimbank, Hume and Whittlesea, showed unattended cooking, electrical appliances and heating were the top three causes of fires across the west last year. New stations top council wish list By Alesha Capone Four new train stations are needed to unclog major roads and improve liveability for Wyndham residents, according to the council. Stations at Sayers Road in Tarneit West, Black Forest Road in Wyndham Vale, Davis Road in Tarneit West and in Truganina have been listed as priority projects in a council submission to Infrastructure Australia. The council’s submission state’s Wyndham’s rapid population growth is creating issues for the community that only major infrastructure projects can solve.

Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said electrification of the Melbourne-Geelong rail line was “crucial to unclogging major roads and improving liveability for residents”. The council submission stated that the Regional Rail Link (RRL) service from Geelong to Melbourne, which stops at Wyndham Vale and Tarneit stations, “is already at capacity”. “According to figures provided by V/Line, Tarneit and/or Wyndham Vale were the busiest points on this line in 13 out of the 16 recorded times between March and May 2019.”

The council’s list of priorities includes establishment of the Wyndham West Link; the Outer Metropolitan Ring; the Geelong-Melbourne rail electrification; the Western Interstate Freight Terminal; the Sunshine and Geelong fast-rail connection via Wyndham; energy from waste facilities; and preschool and secondary school infrastructure. Cr Shaw said the council had already completed parts of the Westlink project, a road and bridge project that runs between Tarneit and Werribee, with the assistance of developer contributions.

But she said the council needed an additional $50-$100 million to complete construction. She said construction of a bridge over the Princes Freeway was “the largest component of these costs”. The council also recommends that the shortfall of preschool facilities and school buildings in growth areas be urgently addressed as a national priority. Infrastructure Australia will put together an Infrastructure Priority List which will be provided to state and federal governments to help guide infrastructure expenditure across the nation.

School fire: Teen arrest A 14-year-old Werribee boy will face charges following a fire at Manor Lakes P-12 College at the weekend. Emergency services were called to the school about 1.05pm on Sunday. It is believed a fire which started in a locker spread into the roof cavity of nearby classrooms. CFA fire crews brought the fire under control by 1.40pm. The college updated the community promptly via its Facebook page. “A fire at the Wyara locker bay … has caused some building damage,” a post stated. “Secondary art and ICT programs may have some disruption, but there will be minimal disruption to other programs.” The fire forced the school to relocate parent teacher interviews that were to be held in the Wyara locker bay on Monday. A police spokesman told Star Weekly a

14-year-old boy was arrested on Sunday and was assisting police with their inquiries. He faces charges relating to the blaze. The investigation is ongoing. Call for level-headed traffic plan By Esther Lauaki A group of residents is campaigning against the state government’s proposals to remove three level crossings in Werribee, calling the plans a “Band-Aid solution” to traffic woes. The Wyndham Infrastructure Network, comprising a small group of residents, engineers and business owners, is urging the community to get up to speed with the plans which will remove the railway crossings at Old Geelong Road, Werribee and Cherry streets by the end of 2022. The government’s preferred designs include: • Old Geelong Road – build a road bridge over the rail line, east of the existing crossing, directly connecting the Princes Highway to Old Geelong Road and Heaths Road. • Cherry Street – build a road bridge east of the existing crossing, linking Tarneit Road to the Princes Highway (via the irrigation channel next to Wyndham council’s offices). • Werribee Street – elevate the railway line over the road, with a rail bridge over the street. Network spokesman Lindsay Ingram said the state government’s preferred designs would not adequately address traffic flows. “The preferred design [at Werribee Street] … will do virtually nothing to alleviate the congestion at this site since most of the congestion there is a result of traffic travelling to or from the Werribee city centre, the Princes Highway and many new estates,” Mr Ingram said. “The funds could be better spent on fast-tracking the Ison Road crossing.” “The preferred design for Morris Road also includes a closure of the rail crossing and a new rail bridge being constructed at the site currently occupied by Monte Villa Motel,” Mr Ingram said.

“Closure of this crossing impacts business at Hoppers Junction and the shopping centre … with some likely to close.” The Level Crossing Removal Authority said this month in a statement that community feedback and other feasible designs had been considered. “The project has listened to the community and made changes to the designs that will make the area safer, easier to get around and in

keeping with the look and feel of the local area,” the authority said. “We heard from the community that they would prefer signalised intersections to roundabouts, so at Old Geelong Road, the roundabout at the Princes Freeway off-ramp will be changed to a signalised intersection. “At Cherry Street, the existing roundabout linking Tarneit Road to a new road bridge will be changed to a signalised intersection and a

footpath will be included on the road bridge. “A shared user path along the railway line will connect Princes Highway at the Tarneit Road intersection back to the pedestrian underpass at Cherry Street, increasing connectivity. “We are still developing the designs for Old Geelong Road and Werribee Street.” Further community information sessions will be held later this year. Phoebe said she felt “proud and fulfilled” to receive the Young Leaders award. “I felt like my work was being recognised and I felt very grateful to Keep Victoria Beautiful and the other organisations I work with,” she said. Phoebe has an extensive list of environment-related volunteer work under her belt, including as a member of Beach Patrol 3030 and as a Melbourne Aquarium ambassador. “My favourite part is meeting people with the same interests as me and sharing ideas on how to save the environment,” she said. Phoebe has also secured grants for her school, Wyndham Central College, to use for conservation and sustainability, and last year she completed work experience at Werribee Open Range Zoo. Phoebe said she applied for the Melbourne Aquarium Ocean Youth Ambassador Program, at the suggestion of her teacher. “I’m also working with VCAL students at my school to build a boat so we can clean up Port Phillip and the Docklands, and it’s also about raising awareness of using fiberglass in boats, as it doesn’t break down,” Phoebe said. While undertaking work experience at the zoo, she created a mobile phone recycling box, for the Zoos Victoria They’re Calling on You program. The box is currently at Phoebe’s college, and she is planning to also take it to a local primary school.

Outdoor pool to open early As the weather warms up, the Werribee Outdoor Pool is set to open for an extra two months. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw has announced that under a council trial, the pool will open from October 1 until April 30 next year. The pool usually opens from November to the end of March. Cr Shaw said the council decided to trial increased opening hours for the pool after a survey of customers. “It’s not only in summer that the months are warmer, so this trial extension will ensure that our residents can cool down in October and April.”

Construction has started on an early childhood services centre in Tarneit capable of accommodating 100 children. The Werribee Islamic Centre (WIC) recently hosted a sod-turning ceremony at the site of the future facility, to be located near the Melbourne Grand Mosque on Wootten Road. The $1.1 million centre, to which the state government has provided $650,000 in funding, is expected to open next year. It will include spaces for three and four-year-old kindergarten programs, long day care, playgroups and maternal child health.

Small ideas, big impact More than 130 pupils from schools in Wyndham and Brimbank visited Werribee Open Range Zoo recently to share ideas about how to create a more sustainable future. The youngsters came together for the zoo’s Love your Locals Day, where they were asked: How can we create a Victorian Western Region that is sustainable for people and creates safe habitats for animals such as the Eastern barred bandicoot, the orange-bellied parrot or the Plains-wanderer? Afterwards, the pupils presented their ideas to each other and zoo staff. The event also included interactive games, tree planting and Australian animal workshops. Love Your Locals Day is a collaboration

between Werribee Open Range Zoo, Wyndham and Brimbank city councils and local primary schools. In eight years of the program, more than 850 young nature lovers have visited the zoo. “With a growing number of environmental concerns, it is so important that our young people are empowered to take action,” Werribee Open Range Zoo’s learning experiences manager Kirsten Ryan said. “Every year we are inspired by what these young environmental leaders come up with. “If we all make changes in our own back yards – no matter how small – collectively, we can make a huge difference. “That’s what Love Your Locals Day is all about.”

Eduardo Salazar’s life would have looked very different if not for martial arts. Five years ago, the Werribee martial arts world champion was involved in a motorcycle accident that broke his spine, leg, pelvis and left him wheelchair-bound. Mr Salazar also lost sight in his left eye as a result of the accident. Doctors initially told him he would remain bed-bound for the rest of his life – a prognosis that he would not accept. He said it was his training that he leaned on to get him back on his feet. The 45-year-old got his first taste of martial arts when he was eight, and quickly found a talent for Muay Thai, kung fu, taekwondo, kummooyeh and hapkido. “For me, martial arts is a lifestyle,” Mr Salazar said. “Martial arts is about self improvement … When you really learn about martial arts, you understand the real purpose is understanding yourself in different situations.

“I did all my [hospital] therapies and, in addition, my training in mindset helped me to go through my program. “A month after my accident, I was able to sit in a wheelchair for short periods of time. “Eventually I was able to sit for longer … I left my wheelchair a year and a half ago and use a cane to walk now.” Mr Salazar has since won multiple world titles in kummooyeh and hapkido, most of them achieved while he was still in his wheelchair, and has more medals that he can carry. “It’s not about the bones or skin, it’s about the mind. The most difficult disability to overcome is that which is in your mind,” he said. Mr Salazar, a fourth dan black belt in hapkido, moved from Columbia to Werribee and passes on martial arts secrets at classes at Iramoo Community Centre and Featherbrook Community Centre in Point Cook. Alyssa goes national Point Cook girl Alyssa Dreaneen has been selected from thousands of hopefuls to represent the state at a national netball competition. Earlier this year, Alyssa – who will celebrate her 12th birthday next week – took part in trials for the School Sport Victoria netball 12 years and under netball team. Of the 3800 students who participated in the trials, 12, including Alyssa, were picked to compete at the School Sport Australian Championship in Canberra. Alyssa was also selected to co-captain her team. She is currently in the ACT for the competition, which began at the weekend and will finish on Friday. Alyssa, who attends Alamanda College, said she started playing netball at the age of six.

“I like the challenge of playing against other girls, it’s fun, and I also like making friends,” she said. Alyssa also plays netball with Westside and the West Devils, which are based in St Albans and Caroline Springs. In total, she trains and plays netball six days a week. Alyssa’s family, including her mother Katherine Dreaneen, said they were “very proud of her accomplishments”. “Alyssa has always, and continues to, work hard for a sport she loves by training hard, never cutting corners,” Ms Dreaneen said. “Her dedication is to be admired.” Alesha Capone WER-FAM-92x261-0419

Donation with a heart Help is close by in case of an emergency at Alamanda K-9 College. St John Ambulance Victoria last week donated a defibrillator to the school as part of a commitment to creating a resilient community. St John community programs leader Alison Osbourne said it was vital that the community was prepared for a sudden cardiac arrest. “The closest public access defibrillator to Alamanda K-9 College is located almost a 15-minute walk – far too far away to give a potential sudden arrest patient a fighting chance,” Ms Osbourne said. “Sudden cardiac arrest will continue to happen so it’s vital that the community has everything in place and is fully prepared for this

situation, to ensure that it’s giving a potential patient the best chance at survival. “This begins with ensuring that there is a publicly accessible defibrillator.” College principal Lyn Jobson said Alamanda was actively involved in St John Ambulance Victoria’s First Aid in Schools program. “Our college is located in one of Victoria’s largest growth corridors and as a result has grown from 371 students in 2013 to an impressive 2208 students,” Ms Jobson said. “The school expects a similar growth rate to continue in the coming years, which is why it’s vital that our school has a defibrillator.”

Name change puts safety first By Alesha Capone About 400 residents living in Werribee and Wyndham Vale will have their properties rezoned to the suburb of Mambourin under a Wyndham council proposal. The council will submit a proposal to the Office of Geographic Names, to extend the Mambourin boundary east to the Regional Rail Link, so it will begin at Greens Road and extend south to Bulban Road. Wyndham mayor Cr Mia Shaw said the suburb boundary review was requested

by a developer because an estate under development, known as “Mambourin”, would have caused a number of properties to be divided between the suburbs of Mambourin, Wyndham Vale and Werribee, rather than just being contained in the Mambourin area. Cr Shaw said the realignment would result in about 400 residents in the Cornerstone estate “potentially being in a different suburb to which they originally bought in”. “This has been a very difficult decision for council and we sympathise with affected

residents,” she said. However, Cr Shaw said emergency services consulted about the proposed change – including fire, ambulance and police – had cited concerns around potential confusion for people when dialling triple-0, if a suburb and estate had the same name but different boundaries. “It was noted that because of the use of Mambourin as both a suburb name and estate name, a triple-0 caller may not know exactly which suburb they are in and this verifying process could delay the dispatchment of an

ambulance or other emergency service,” she said. “We have a duty to make decisions in the interests of public safety, so this was the main factor in adopting the option recommended by the emergency services.” Residents who will be living in a different postcode following the realignment will be sent a letter about the decision and options for their next steps, in the coming weeks. The council sent about 550 letters to residents and ratepayers notifying them of the proposed boundary change.

On top of the hip-hop A Hoppers Crossing pupil has been recognised as a top dancer. Eight-year-old Hriday received the Best Male Dancer award at the Primary School Dance Competition, which was held in Williamstown last month. Hriday performed a hip-hop and Bollywood-themed routine with other students from Derrimut Heath Primary School, which is part of Baden Powell College. The dance routine won the Most Entertaining Performance award at the competition. Students from the college’s other campus, in Tarneit, were named second runner-up in the High School Dance Competition, which was held on the same day. Teacher Simona Grippi, who also runs the after-school Dance4All program at Baden Powell, said all the students in the competition “did fantastically”. Hriday said he found out he had won the Best

Male Dancer award after Ms Grippi phoned his father with the news. “I felt really proud of myself, and I felt really shocked,” Hriday said. “I enjoy dancing and my parents really encourage me to do it. “I like hip-hop the most.” Hriday, who started dancing on his first birthday, said he also liked singing and acting in plays. Garry Cowley’s objective in life is simple – to identify where there is a need in the community and try to help. The Werribee pastor speaks with Esther Lauaki.

How do you and the church get involved in the Wyndham community? We run a food bank and that’s one of the ways that we meet people in the community. We have a program called Let’s Talk on a Saturday where people can come in and practice their language, particularly migrants who want to practice their English. This is in addition to three bible study groups we run each week. We do a car-boot sale twice a year and around Christmas we run a Carols on the Lawn event. I am thinking about starting up a men’s breakfast event to address some of the issues that men may face. What’s something not many people know about you? I love my AFL – I’m a Hawthorn supporter. I’m a pastor but I’m an ordinary guy. I also love history.

I’m a pastor at the Werribee Church of Christ. Originally from Perth, I’d been to Victoria once before and when we finished service at our last church we were offered a post here in Werribee. I had no idea where Werribee was before then.

I’ve been here for about four years with my lovely wife Cynthia, who is from the Philippines. What are you passionate about?

What I do as a pastor, connecting with people and the things we do as a church. I’m in a job that I’m very passionate about, otherwise I wouldn’t be doing it. Being a pastor is not a 9-5 job. I always have my phone for people who need to talk and I’ve often found myself in a hospital

I’d always said that I wanted to live somewhere that was 30 minutes from the city with a multicultural community. When we were offered the opportunity to come and live in Werribee it was perfect. The shire has a wonderful vision for the future of the area. Werribee has a unique identity and the people are very easy to get along with. As I get to know the area, I also realise that there are a lot of needs in the community. I think, “what can I do to help?”. Moving here from Perth was a bit of a culture shock in many ways. There was traffic. With traffic it can take you 15 minutes to get into the centre of Werribee and we’re just around the corner.

Werribee Shire Council will, once again, try to end the discriminatory situation where different pricing structures for packaged beers are in effect for different parts of the state. Since the introduction of minimum pricing legislation for packaged beer 3-4 years ago, successive reviews of the pricing have failed to remove the anomaly between Laverton and Werribee.

Werribee Police will mount a major crackdown on motorists in a bid to stop the carnage on Victorian roads following a horrific seven days which left 27 people dead, last week. As Victoria’s death count heads towards 800 for the year, last week’s triple teenage fatality at Hopkins Rd, Werribee, sparked a senior police crackdown on careless motorists in the municipality.

The State Liberal candidate for Werribee, Councillor David McLaren, will next week ask fellow councillors to reverse a decision they made a year ago while he was mayor opposing an $8.5 million community health centre being built on a site next to the Events Centre. The Department of Human Services (DHS), is close to confirming the Conquest Park estate – on former CSIRO land on Railway Avenue – as the site for the centre.

A war of words has erupted over claims the State Government has failed to fully deliver on funding promises made to Werribee Secondary College before the previous state election. Only 12 days before Victorians went to the polls, former Education Minister Lynne Kosky, then Tarneit District candidate Tim Pallas and former prime minister Bob Hawke visited the school, where Labor promised to provide for a complete redevelopment.

SPORT Falcons fail to fire as the Eagles take the title It was a day that Wyndhamvale would rather forget. The Falcons were second best in every facet of a 67-point loss to Yarraville Seddon Eagles in the Western Region Football League division 2 grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. Falcons player-coach Chris Moreland conceded the opposition were far too strong for his side on the day. “Sometimes days like today, your best isn’t good enough,” Moreland said. “They started slow, but when they kicked into gear, they were slick. “The way they were using the footy and the way they were flicking it around, we got caught ball watching a bit. “They’re a good unit.” Despite the scoreline blowing out, Moreland believes his side tried hard until the bitter end. Frustrations boiled over late when Yarraville Seddon star Andrejs Everitt perhaps over-celebrated in front of the Falcons fans, leading to a push and shove among the players

and a free kick to Everitt, who kicked another goal to take his team’s score to triple figures. Aside from that, the Falcons remained disciplined throughout, but just could not get any momentum in the game. “When I was growing up, you always play siren to siren,” Moreland said. “You never fall on your sword. “You always try to finish off the game pretty strong.” Wyndhamvale’s main deficiency, the lack of a powerful marking key forward, was exposed in the finals. The Falcons kicked scores of 55, 42 and 34 during the finals, not the offensive output the minor premiers would have desired. best four-quarter performer for the Falcons. Nathan Bisset was lively in attack, Elia Tzagarakis worked hard defensively and Moreland covered a lot of ground. After half-time, onballer Liam Scarborough and half forward Jack Tessari tried to ignite the Falcons, but it was all to no avail. Relegated from division 1 last season, Wyndhamvale has established itself as a powerhouse of division 2. The energy is back at the Falcons nest after some lean years in the top flight. While the grand final loss will hurt for some time, another season in the second tier might not be a bad thing for Wyndhamvale. “A lot of the boys could’ve walked away from the club after the poundings that they copped in division 1,” Moreland said. “I’ve always said, it’s about getting the Wyndhamvale community back together and just embracing each other.” Lance Jenkinson

Hawks triumph to take flag By Lance Jenkinson With his team putting the finishing touches on a glorious grand final day experience, Glen Orden coach Phil Crea turned to the section of supporters decked out in brown and gold, stretched out his arms, clenched his fists, pumped the air in delight and let out an almighty roar. The emotions of 24 months of blood, sweat and tears that it took for the Hawks to go from a club in oblivion to a premiership winner in the Western Region Football League division 3 came out in that joyous moment. The Hawks sealed the flag with a 26-point win over the much-fancied Albanvale in the grand final at the VU Whitten Oval on Saturday. Crea allowed himself the chance to enjoy the final five minutes of what is a most stressful day for coaches. “It’s been a big journey for a couple of years,” he said. “What we’ve been through, the challenges, the last five minutes of the game, I just wanted to enjoy every minute of it.” This time two years ago, Glen Orden did not have a senior men’s football team. The 2017 season will be a hole in the Hawks record books because of a mass exodus of players prior to that season. The biggest challenge for Glen Orden was getting back on the park because often clubs are unable to find a way back from such a predicament. The Hawks found a way, installing Crea as coach and beginning the journey back to the top of division 3. “It’s a credit to these blokes,” Crea said. “They put up their hand to get the club back up and running. “I hope, after this premiership, they make this place home now.” Glen Orden only won three games in 2018, but that was to be expected because of its limited preparation. Coming into 2019, Crea told everyone who would listen that he had assembled a finals-quality team. The Hawks played like one from the outset, winning their first eight games of the season and setting the standard in the league. Two flat patches – back-to-back losses in rounds nine and 10 and then a three-game losing streak between rounds 15 and 17 – had some people doubting if Glen Orden could re-capture its early-season form, but it did so in a big way during a flawless finals series. finals wins was getting back to team instructions and plans that had served them so well during their high points. “We had that little lapse during the year, but come finals time, we spoke about sticking to our structures and sticking with what works for us, and they did that,” Crea said. “I thought the way we used the ball was great. “Everyone played their role today and that’s how you win flags.” Crea concedes Glen Orden was not perfect.

Two yellow cards – picked up for ill-disciplined acts in the third quarter for Jhoshuar Dean and Soni Rainbow – were disappointing. It was in those moments, when the Hawks were down a man on the field, that each player stepped up to fill the void. “A couple of ill-disciplined things might have cost us a bit,” Crea said. “That’s something as a club that we need to work on and get better. “To win finals and grand finals, you’ve got to

show character, and I thought the boys did after we got those yellow cards.” Glen Orden’s Marc Yates claimed the medal for best-on-ground. Yates has been inspirational for the Hawks all season. “He’s provided that leadership, the love for the club and how much the club means to him has rubbed off on the new blokes,” Crea said. “He’s unlucky not to be the centre half-back in the team of the year.” Dylan Di Genova and Henoch Kebede were the outstanding big men on the ground for Glen Orden. Dillon Hinge was the best forward on the ground with three goals and provided a presence. Crea praised the efforts of the whole Hawks backline. “All year, our backline haven’t conceded a big score,” he said. “They work so well down there together.” Crea confirmed that Glen Orden will accept promotion to division 2 next season. “We’re going to embrace going up a division,” he said. Big race rower puts small club on the map Samuel Wilson is proud to represent the relatively small Footscray City Rowing Club at elite levels. Wilson is proof you do not have to be from one of the bigger city clubs to enjoy success in top level competitions. The 16-year-old has dominated in his age level in Victoria this year, winning the under 17s singles title at the state championships and reigning in the Herald and Sporting Globe Shield, a six-week handicap event. Wilson is using his success to promote Footscray City and the sport of rowing in the local area. “We’ve got quite an under-represented club in the juniors,” he said. “To be able to win those competitions and represent the club, it shows that even quite a small club can still produce athletes that can win high level awards. “We need more people down here. “Come and get on the river.” Wilson loves the thrill of race day. When it comes to the final 500 metres of a two kilometre race, he is in his element. “It’s a great sport to do,” he said. “I enjoy the people I’ve met along the way and I love racing. “The best part is when you’ve got to put

everything on the line, especially when you’ve come from the back and you’re racing to get to the front, it’s what I like about the races.” Wilson’s year kicked off on a high with success at the state championships. It gave the West Footscray resident the green light to represent Victoria at the national championships in Penrith. Unfortunately, that is where Wilson’s low point of the season came. The year 11 student at Footscray City College was not afforded the chance to show his best form. “I was really sick at the time, so I wasn’t able to perform at the level I would have liked to,” Wilson said. “My aim is to go back again next year, which will be a bit tougher because I’ll be going in as under-age.” Wilson got healthy in time to compete in the prestigious Herald and Sporting Globe Shield. The event has been held on the Yarra River since 1927 and consists of six handicap races over a two kilometre course. Wilson won five of the six races to take out the shield. Each race he started from the back of the field and worked his way to the front. Wilson secured the shield after the sixth and

final race – the only leg he did not win. He only needed to better the points of one of his closest rivals to take out the shield, so he competed in a more tactical fashion. “It’s quite an honour to win that shield because it’s been going for nearly 100 years,” Wilson said. Wilson is the September nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western

Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Promotion for Point Cook By Lance Jenkinson In assessing Point Cook’s run to promotion in the Football Victoria women’s state league 4 west, you are immediately drawn to the incredible feats of its front line. How could you not be when you feast your eyes on the sumptuous 87 goals they scored in 15 games at a rate of 5.8 goals per game. Jets coach Graham Moran had a slightly different viewpoint. Moran felt like the Jets were built on rock solid defensive foundations first and foremost before the fun could start for the strikers. He has a point too, considering the Jets conceded a measly eight goals for the season at a rate of 0.53 per game. “When you can build on that sort of structure, it takes the pressure off the front three,” Moran said. What is most impressive about Point Cook’s defensive numbers is that it was achieved with an inexperienced backline. The central defensive pairing of captain

Taylah Brown and Jasmine Zilic are supposed to be finding their feet in senior football. Brown is a young skipper at 21 and Zilic is just 16. “They formed a formidable duo for us,” Moran said. “A fairly young combination to have in the centre of the defence but it worked.” Brown was a fantastic leader on and off the field for Point Cook. Not only did she take charge of the Jets senior team, but was always willing to share her knowledge with the juniors of the club. She will leave a legacy of hard work from the 2019 season, but don’t expect the captain’s arm band to be taken away from her any time soon. “It was her first year stepping up as captain,” Moran said. “She certainly set the example.” Her ability to ignite forward moves for Point Cook from the back made her a damaging two-way player. Point Cook had no shortage of finishers. Fifteen different players scored goals, 11 players were multiple goalscorers and five

players scored five or more on the season. The lethal trio were Melissa Naumovska, the competition’s second leading goalscorer with 23 goals, Regina Mariel with 16 and Madison Filer with 15. A huge mid-season addition for Point Cook was Sophie Plessa, who arrived from state league 1 club Hoppers Crossing. Plessa provided seven goals and much-needed experience. “She was more important than just scoring the goals,” Moran said. “She had a mature head, which was one factor we were missing.” With Avondale the clear best team in the league this season, it was all about second spot for Point Cook. The Jets all but secured their promotion position with a 3-0 win over Kyneton District on August 4. “We knew early on that Avondale were one or two steps too quick and too skilful, so it was all about the second place,” Moran said. Point Cook will feature in women’s state league 3 next season.

Werribee Devils have shown their ambition with the appointment of former Australian Boomers centre and accomplished leader John Dorge as coach of the men’s state championship team in 2020. The Devils established themselves as a respected member of Big V Basketball top flight men’s competition under former coach Warren Estcourt and have brought in Dorge to take the team to the next level. There are few more revered or honoured members of Australian basketball than Dorge. As a player, Dorge was a towering presence on the court, putting his 209cm frame to good use for club and country. Dorge enjoyed an NBL career spanning 13 years. A Queenslander, Dorge had the honour of representing the Brisbane Bullets before moving to Melbourne to play with the Geelong Supercats and South East Melbourne Magic. It was at the Magic where his reputation as a leader grew, captaining the team for five years. He won two NBL championships with both the Bullets in 1985 and 1987 and the Magic in 1992 and 1996. Since finishing as a player, Dorge has turned his focus to coaching. The 56-year-old spent seven years as an assistant coach in the NBL, five with the Cairns Taipans and two with the NZ Breakers, before taking charge of his own team in New Zealand. He had immediate success with Harbour Heat in the New Zealand NBL, earning coach of the year honours. Dorge returned to Australia to take on a coaching role at Camberwell Grammar School and a director of coaching role with St Monica’s College Basketball Academy. Dorge is looking for a new challenge. “Looking at it from afar, Werribee is an exciting place to be right now, the association is clearly on the up. “I’ve seen what the women have done this season and would love to build that kind of excitement around the men’s team as well.” Dorge will bring in a new assistant coach, Peter Fleming and they will be joined by last year’s development coach Jackie Gibson. Toyotaâ€™s new HiAce a safe bet By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring Fifteen years is almost three lifetimes in motor car terms but thatâ€™s how long the previous Toyota HiAce commercial van was on the Australian market. Despite increased competition in recent years itâ€™s been the top-selling van throughout that 15-year period and is sure to continue with the release of an all-new model. The most noticeable change with new HiAce is that it now comes in a semi-bonneted configuration that not only provides extra collision safety but also, allows the engine to be moved forward ahead of the front axle rather than under the cabin as in previous models. This provides improvements in cabin comfort, seating and ergonomics as well as greater stability and ride comfort. As before, the new HiAce comes in long wheelbase (LWB) and super long wheelbase (SLWB) lengths. These have been increased by 640mm and 750mm respectively with the overall length of the LWB now up 570mm to 5265mm and SLWB by 535mm to 5915mm. The increases are within the cabin, with cargo space unchanged at 6.2 cubic metres and 9.3 cubic metres. Model variants are two-seat LWB and SLWB vans, five-seat LWB crew van and 12-seat Commuter bus. As before, HiAce comes with the choice of petrol or turbo-diesel engines although they have been given significant boosts. The new 3.5-litre V6 petrol replaces the previous 2.7-litre four-cylinder unit with peak power up by 89kW to 207kW and maximum torque by 108Nm to 351Nm. Although down in capacity from 3.0 litres the new 2.8-litre turbo-diesel generates more power (up to 30kW) and torque (up to 150Nm) depending on the model variant.
