Werribee Mercy Hospital will be among those hospitals to benefit from nearly $400 million in state funding. The state government announced last Thursday a $391.72 million investment in Mercy Health. A Mercy Health spokeswoman told Star Weekly it was unclear how much of the funding Werribee Mercy would receive. “Werribee Mercy Hospital has been providing comprehensive care to the Wyndham community and those living in the south-western region of Melbourne for 25 years,” the spokesman said in a statement. “We help to deliver more than 4000 babies every year, operate a busy emergency department and, one year ago, we opened an intensive care unit to better serve our community. “Wyndham is one of Australia’s fastest-growing municipalities, with a population of more than 250,000. “To ensure we can meet our community’s needs, Mercy Health continues to work pro-actively and co-operatively with the state government to address the future growth in demand for services in Wyndham.” Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said the funding meant more patients would receive care, treatment and surgeries sooner. “There’s no point building world-class hospitals if our nurses and doctors don’t have the funding they need to deliver the very best care,” Ms Connolly said. “We’re not just building hospitals, we’re investing in them, too.” Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the state government had, in the past 12 months, injected $25.79 million into Mercy public hospitals, including Werribee, to ensure they continued to offer quality services and treatment. “There’s nothing more important than the peace of mind that world-class care is just around the corner when you or a loved one is sick,” Mr Pallas said. “We’re making sure families across Victoria can get that care.” Mr Pallas said $12.2 billion was being invested in hospitals and health services to treat more patients – including $2.5 billion in the Victorian 2019-20 budget. Figures from the Department of Health & Human Services forecast that more than two million patients would be treated in Victorian hospitals in the next year, including more than 200,000 elective surgeries and 750,000 emergency department presentations.

Wyndham Citizen of the Year Roger Vistarini has dedicated the past four years volunteering to help men overcome drug and alcohol addictions. He was presented with the prestigious title at last Friday’s Wyndham Community Volunteer Awards which celebrate the achievements of some of the city’s many volunteers. Mayor Mia Shaw said Mr Vistarini was acknowledged for his outstanding commitment to community health and wellbeing and the time he has dedicated to helping men transform their lives at the residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre in Hoppers Crossing, Dreambuilders Transformations. “For the past four years Roger has volunteered extensive hours to help create a safe and supportive environment for men to recover from addictions,” Cr Shaw said. “He is known for going above and beyond in building relationships and making a significant difference in helping people to rebuild their lives.” Other category winners included: • Erum Ali – Community Engagement Award • Lisa Field – Environment or Sustainability Award • Gaurav Malhotra – Sports and Recreation • Emily Lacey – Young Volunteer of the Year • Headspace Werribee Youth Advocacy Group – Community Group of the Year. Boundary Road safety upgrade By Esther Lauaki Stop signs will be installed at the intersection of Boundary and Davis roads in Tarneit and line markings revamped in a bid to improve safety. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said changed traffic patterns across the municipality had directed more traffic on to Boundary Road in recent months. “We know that motorists are concerned about safety along this road, particularly at the intersection of Davis Road,” Cr Shaw said.

“That’s why we’re taking immediate action towards an interim solution. We commissioned a road safety audit along this road and will now begin to implement changes over the next two weeks. “Motorists will notice new lines painted along the road to clearly guide motorists where they should be driving. This will prevent drivers going near the edge of the pavement, particularly at Davis Road. “The existing give way signs will be replaced with stop signs and additional advanced

warning signs will be installed along Davis Road to advise motorists of the appropriate driving behaviour at the intersection to ensure safety.” She said additional guideposts aimed to direct and protect motorists would be installed to provide better traffic delineation at the intersection. “Any maintenance defects, including potholes that were identified in the audit, have been forwarded to council’s maintenance team. While recent reductions in speed limits

and upgraded signage at this intersection are welcome changes, the ultimate solution is the widening and signalisation of the intersection. “Unfortunately, this is not something that can be implemented overnight. “These works require complex relocations of utility services, land acquisitions and design works. “We will continue to work alongside the Department of Transport and other stakeholders to see this intersection upgraded.” Details: bit.ly/2Z7lJIM

Wyndham families are using local libraries to unlock their histories. Council’s arts and heritage portfolio holder Tony Hooper said more than 500 people had discovered more about their heritage through Wyndham libraries in the past five years. “Family history is a popular topic in Wyndham’s community,” Cr Hooper said. “People are often surprised to learn where their relatives lived and travelled to, what their occupations were. “Family history research is a bit like detective work – sometimes a mystery in the family tree pops up that people need to solve.” He said a team of dedicated volunteers helped people research their family histories in the family and local history room at the Plaza Library six mornings a week. “We also have a dedicated family and local history librarian at the Plaza Library four days a week who provides genealogy tours on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday mornings to help people get started,” Cr Hooper said. Man fights life Tarneit footyfor funding

A man is fighting for life after a stoush at a bowser of a Wyndham Vale 7-Eleven petrol station. The elderly man was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries after the fight at the Ballan Road premises around 11.45am on Monday. Creative space for youth Point Cook will soon have a new space for young people to relax and get creative. Construction on the Saltwater Youth Space, due to open later this year, is well under way and will include an outdoor film projector, performance space and art â€œcanvassesâ€? and a host of other bells and whistles. Wyndham deputy mayor John Gibbons said the spaceâ€™s concrete surfaces would feature textured, wave-like stencilling inspired by artist Louise Lavarackâ€™s design of the neighbouring community centre. â€œA projection wall will be able to showcase artwork and films for special events, and a stage and seating area will make this a great place to host bands,â€? Cr Gibbons said. â€œIn addition, large platforms will double as

canvasses for art, allowing Point Cookâ€™s young people to showcase their talent.â€? He said Point Cook was a fast-growing community. â€œWith 33 per cent of Point Cook residents aged 19 or younger, council is committed to providing dedicated â– areas for young people to relax, socialise and express their creativity,â€? Truck delivers a winner By Esther Lauaki A new truck for the Fruit2Work delivery fleet will mean a fresh start for 15 people. The Fruit2Work social enterprise, run by youth charity Whitelion, gives people who have served time in jail a chance to gain work experience and skills through employment. Its factory is in Laverton North. Thanks to a $50,000 state government grant, the organisation will be able to buy a new refrigerated van to deliver fresh fruit and milk to workplaces across Victoria.

Crime Prevention Minister Ben Carroll said expansion of the Fruit2Work fleet would mean 15 people would gain valuable experience in the next three years. “The government is helping Fruit2Work make a real difference by providing work opportunities to people who need a second chance,” Mr Carroll said. “I would urge businesses to support this great initiative by considering Fruit2Work for their fresh fruit and milk supply needs. “This new refrigerated van will increase the number of deliveries Fruit2Work can make, boosting the number of people it employs to prepare, pack and deliver the fresh fruit and milk.” Since Fruit2work was launched in 2016, it has employed 28 people. It has 14 staff who have been in the justice system, including four young people, who prepare, pack and deliver.

Fruit2Work also provides mentoring and counselling to help people make positive changes in its staff members’ lives. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said Fruit2Work played an important role in helping people turn their lives around. The grant was part of the state’s Community

Crime Prevention Program, which provides funding for community-led initiatives to reduce youth crime, improve security and safety and offer support for Crime Stoppers Victoria, Neighbourhood Watch Victoria and the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council.

Upgrade news welcomed by school The Werribee Primary School community is thrilled at the news that “much-needed” repairs are on the way. The school will receive a $275,000 state grant to refurbish the administration building roof. Principal David Quinn welcomed the “terrific news” delivered by Werribee MP Tim Pallas at the school last week to the delight of staff and pupils. “The works are very much needed and we are so grateful to receive these funds to complete this project,” Mr Quinn said. Police step up safety campaign By Esther Lauaki Frontline police have new hardware to ensure timely and accurate reporting of family violence incidents. The Family Violence Report (FVR) tool, launched statewide last Thursday, allows police to make better decisions based on the information they collect out in the field using a mobile tablet device, improving accuracy and ensuring prompt referrals. The rollout follows a two-year pilot in Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Wyndham, Brimbank and Melton.

Family violence command assistant commissioner Dean McWhirter said the tool, developed in conjunction with Swinburne University and Forensicare, would provide frontline officers a tool to assess risk. Assistant commissioner McWhirter said family violence and violence against women was core police work, accounting for about 40 to 60 per cent of frontline police time. “In the past 12 months to March this year, police responded to more than 81,000 incidents of family violence,” he said. “These incidents can be complex and police

are often required to make assessments in stressful circumstances to keep people safe. “The FVR gives police more guidance and confidence to make improved decisions based on the information they collect, combined with enhanced training and professional judgement. “Police officers will also be better equipped to understand the intricacies of relationships to determine the risk level. It also allows police to collect consistent information to better track repeat offenders and those who breach intervention orders.” Assistant commissioner McWhirter said

the highest risk cases would be triaged to the specialist Family Violence Investigation Units. Family Violence Prevention Minister Gabrielle Williams said the reporting tool delivered on one of 277 recommendations from the Royal Commission into Family Violence. “We’re addressing family violence with a range of approaches that reflect the royal commission’s recommendations and rebuilding the system from the ground up to keep women and children safe,” Ms Williams said.

Salon Vogue a cut above A long-standing Werribee salon has been voted one of the best in the west. Salon Vogue on Watton Street placed second in a recent community survey ranking hair salons from across the state. The one-stop style and beauty shop also ranked in the top-10 in the state. Owner Pino Burrone started the business 25 years ago. He grew up in Werribee and opened Salon Vogue Hair in 1994. “I started off as the sole owner and we now have 16 staff and a beauty therapist,” Mr Burrone said. He’s also just added a barber. “When we renovated we realised that a lot of men want to have their hair cut at a barber shop – guys love it,” Mr Burrone said. Mr Burrone and wife Ange renovate the salon every five years to keep abreast of latest trends.

Big tick for ambulance response By Alesha Capone Ambulance response times have improved in Wyndham, according to the latest data. In the June quarter of this year, ambulances in Wyndham arrived at their destination on average in 10 minutes 20 seconds, 18 seconds quicker than for the same period last year. Ambulance responses to Code 1 emergencies (medical cases requiring lights and sirens, such

as a cardiac arrest) also improved, with 88.4 per cent arriving within 15 minutes, compared to 86 per cent a year earlier. Within the June quarter, ambulances in Wyndham responded to more than 2300 Code 1 cases, compared to 1808 Code 1 cases a year prior. Across the state, 75,398 Code 1 calls were responded to in the quarter – 8525 more than in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, according to the latest hospital data, Werribee Mercy Hospital hit a number of key targets, despite a huge increase in workload. The hospital: • Treated 11,647 patients in its emergency department in the June quarter, 1491 more than the same period a year earlier. • Reduced its elective surgery waiting lists to 893 patients – down from 1035 the previous quarter.

• Operated on more than half of category one urgent elective surgery patients within 14 days, which is well under the 30-day benchmark set by the state government. Werribee MP Tim Pallas commended the work of frontline health workers in Wyndham. “The flu season has hit hard and hit early, but our nurses, doctors and paramedics in Wyndham have done an exceptional job rising to the challenge,” Mr Pallas said.

Part of life’s rich tapestry Aung Kaw Sein is, quite literally, spinning a great yarn at the Wyndham Community and Education Centre. Mr Sein and his wife, Chu La Htoo Sein, both Karen people from Burma, came to Australia more than five years ago and are keen to pass on their knowledge to the next generation. The Sein’s often attend the community centre in Werribee where Mr Sein weaves traditional scarves on a loom and Mrs Sein twirls the tassels on the woven goods and sewing. “I enjoy it everyday … when I’m at home it’s boring, and when I come here I can weave and I have friends I can talk to,” Mr Sein said. Waste plant bid powers up By Alesha Capone

A taste for stardom Young Point Cook actor Rohan O’Kane has taken the first step towards becoming a professional actor. After his first-ever audition, nine-year-old Rohan (pictured) was cast in a short film being made by students from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). Rohan spent three days filming on location near Kew during the recent school holidays, playing the role of a schoolboy. His friend Lorcan plays the lead role in the film, of a boy who “thinks he is cool but everyone else thinks he is a bit different”. “I liked the filming and learned a lot from it, like not to look at the camera but sideways – and I loved the food on set,” Rohan said. Rohan said the film had not yet been released, but he was looking forward to seeing the finished product. Both Rohan and Lorcan attend classes at Adam Turnbull Acting (ATA) in Altona Meadows. Rohan said he started with ATA at the beginning of the year, and had decided that he would like to become an actor in the future. “I’d like to do stage and film,” he said. “I’d like to work on a movie like Toy Story 4 and do a voiceover, or something like that.” Rohan said he also enjoyed playing piano, attending Scouts and sailing.

A proposal to build a waste to energy plant in Laverton North, which is set to generate enough electricity to power 16,000 to 20,000 houses a day, is being assessed by the Environment Protection Authority Victoria. EPA Victoria is considering a works approval application for the plant from Recovered Energy Australia Pty Ltd, and has invited public feedback on the application. If approved, the plant would be built in Alex Fraser Drive, and is expected to create up to 40 full-time jobs, plus an additional 400 jobs during construction. Recovered Energy Australia submitted its planning application for a “waste gasification to energy plant” to Wyndham council last year. At the time, Recovered Energy Australia director Ian Guss told Star Weekly that the plant would be worth “in the order of around $100 million”. He said the facility, which would be the first of its kind in Australia, would convert up to 200,000 tonnes of general household domestic waste a year into about 15 megawatts of baseload renewable energy, to be fed back into the grid. According to planning documents, the plant would divert about 195,000 tonnes of waste from going to landfill every year. The documents stated the plant would also reduce the amount of food waste entering the municipal solid waste system, and eventually landfill, by about 50 per cent. A range of reflections Werribee’s water treatment plant is the backdrop for a homegrown movie that will feature in a new short film festival next month. Out of Range will screen in the inaugural SBS Short Film Festival, one of 14 films from Australian creatives of varied backgrounds. The film, one of two in the festival shot in Victoria, is about a father who decides to take his estranged son fishing – but when the car breaks down, he realises the engine isn’t the only thing that’s broken. Out of Range writer and director John Harvey said he created the film because he had been disappointed by the portrayal of indigenous men in the media. “I was thinking about how indigenous men are portrayed on screens,” Harvey said.

“Indigenous men that I know, such as my brothers, my uncles and my friends … where was my story reflected? “Max, played by Aaron Pedersen, and Levi, played by Araluen Lee Baxter, get stranded on high ground sitting in their dinghy perched on the car … it became a metaphor for how they feel in life. “I loved how the image of them in the boat, surrounded by crops, allows a subtle clash of political, colonial, and familial themes.” The festival, which will air from September 13 to 15, includes dark comedies, dramatic soap operas and heartfelt documentaries. Hand amputation leads to fine By Goya Dmytryshchak A Brooklyn meat processing company has been convicted and fined $90,000 after a worker’s hand was amputated. JBS Australia pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates Court to failing, so far as is reasonably practicable, to provide a safe working environment that was without risk to health. The court heard the injured man had been

working on a production line to remove hides from sheep carcasses that had been missed by a machine known as the primary hide puller. The court heard that after the primary hide puller missed several carcasses, there were hectic scenes as workers attached chains or straps to a back-up hide puller, while leaving the machine running. A chain that the injured worker had wrapped around his wrist got caught in the back-up hide puller.

He was dragged into the machinery and his left wrist and hand were amputated. According to the man, workers had been following common practice when the production line was busy.

JBS Australia has since decommissioned the back-up hide puller and bought new machinery. WorkSafe health and safety executive director Julie Nielsen said there was no excuse for allowing workers to take unnecessary risks by using unsafe machinery or not powering down machinery when necessary. “This worker suffered an horrific, life-changing injury while operating hazardous machinery because a safe system of work was not in place,” she said.

A life-sized cow became a canvas for young artists in Werribee as they learned about the delights of dairy. A hundred year 3 and 4 pupils from Our Lady of the Southern Cross Catholic Primary School in Manor Lakes took turns painting the sculpture as part of the Picasso Cows program. The program, run by Dairy Australia, aims to help children discover the health benefits of dairy produce. Visual arts teacher Kylie Kennedy-Cupples said that before the children set to work painting the cow, they completed a raft of activities learning about healthy eating and strong bones. “We did a lot of work around cows,” she said. “The children don’t get to paint just anything on the cow – they first have to go online and do activities and collect ideas through other resources. “We made butter in an old butter churn, had a milkshake tasting day and we had lunch with some healthy food – a variety of different

Teen talks for the young By Alesha Capone Williams Landing teenager Brian Lee has been selected from hundreds of applicants to become a UNICEF Australia Young Ambassador. Brian, 16, has been appointed one of 10 national UNICEF Young Ambassadors, from more than 330 youths who applied for the role. Under UNICEF’s Young Ambassador Program, participants will learn about children’s rights, government advocacy, public speaking and engaging with children and young people. The ambassadors will then

spend six months consulting with children around Australia and compile a report on their research, which will be submitted to the federal government and UNICEF internationally. Brian said that it was important for everyone, regardless of age, to have a say in decisions that affect them. “I’m particularly interested in the child rights regarding children’s dignity in education and in families,” he said. “I hope to see corporal punishment abolished one day, especially in families where the line between domestic violence and corporal punishment can get

Southern Rural Water is selling its historic former works depot site and surplus land in Werribee. Facing both the Princes Highway and Tower Road, the site was recently rezoned, allowing for the possibility of it being developed for a range of residential and commercial purposes. The site, which measures 9630 square metres, is being advertised as a “substantial development opportunity”. The Tower Road site has been occupied by Southern Rural Water (SRW) and its previous entities, such as the Rural Water Corporation, for more than a century. The original office and tower are of local heritage significance and protected under the Wyndham Planning Scheme. Across the years, the site has been used as a research facility, a hub for water supply and irrigation projects, as well as a depot. In recent years, much of the eastern part of the site has been vacant, after the depot and field staff relocated to Werribee South. Southern Rural Water’s managing director, Cameron FitzGerald, said money raised from the sale of the former depot and land would be used to fund the “much-needed redevelopment” of SRW’s office at 1 Tower Road. The remaining proceeds from the sale will assist in funding the pipelining of old channels in the district. Alesha Capone

Lady of the sea says farewell By Tate Papworth An 81-year-old Russian sea captain living in Sunshine is putting some of her prized momentos up for sale. Victoria Ostrovskaya arrived in Australia in 1992 in a bid to become the first Russian woman to solo circumnavigate the world. She began her trip in Melbourne in 1995, but almost immediately had to return to port after her yacht’s propeller was damaged. Australian businessman Dick Smith sponsored the repair of the yacht and in January, 1996, she made a second attempt, however bad luck appeared to be following her.

She made it only to Geelong when a motor problem was discovered. Months later she made her third attempt. “I was in a great hurry because my visa was about to expire and I was under pressure to leave the country,” she said. “I knew there was a great storm coming and better judgment would be to wait for it to pass, then follow it, but I was under time pressure.” Captain Ostrovskaya made it to Bass Straight before disaster struck. “There was a cyclone, the boat got hit by a massive wave and ended up rolling 360 degrees. “I didn’t want to give up, so I spent seven days and seven nights in the boat with four broken ribs trying to make sure it wouldn’t sink. “There is not time to think about death. You need to act. I prayed to St Nicholas, the saint patron of sailors to help me in the hopeless

situation, but I did not think for a moment about losing life.” Captain Ostrovskaya eventually issued a mayday and was rescued by a helicopter. While she may not have completed her

Irrigators in the Werribee-Bacchus Marsh irrigation area will have their water supplies cut by about one quarter unless substantial rain falls in the catchments in the next few weeks. Storages in the Werribee River system are only 70 per cent of capacity because of an exceptionally dry winter.

MY WYNDHAM Point Cook husband-and-wife Mark and Paula Beeby last week opened Rapid Red Gum, a wood-fired pizza drive-through in Werribee. They chat with Alesha Capone.

Paula: Mark – who is a chef – built the Rapid Red Gum trailer with a little help from me. We started in January last year and finished in May this year, then we went looking for sites to set up – that was the hard part. I’m the office manager. I’ve previously been a front office manager of hotels in New Zealand, a PA at a rehabilitation company and things like that over here. My last job was as a logistics co-ordinator for a podiatry company. Mark and I also run another business called Pizza Party Hire – we both worked full-time jobs for the first few years we ran that. Mark: That was where I came up with the idea of, “Why don’t we do a drive-through pizza place?” The concept started in America, but they usually only do it with a trailer at existing restaurants. Paula: Now we’re here (in Werribee), we pretty much do classic pizza and a small selection of gourmet pizzas. We also do a healthy pizza wrap during the day. We haven’t been able to find anyone else in Australia who does drive-through pizza.

Mark: We are fresh-to-order. For customers, it’s only five minutes from their order to pick-up. We have a high-tech, genuine, woodfired oven which allows us to do this. Did you want to set up Rapid Red Gum somewhere in Wyndham? Paula: We wanted to be close to home, because we live in Point Cook, and we wanted an area with good access. Mark: We also wanted somewhere close to a residential area. It’s a topic that inspires a lot of debate – pineapple on pizza. Mark: We don’t mind too much – if customers want pineapple, they can have pineapple. Tomato is also a fruit and it goes on pizza. What do you like about Point Cook? (Damjan Janevski)

How did the business come about?

Paula: In 2007, when we arrived here, I loved the newness of it. It’s modern, it’s new, it’s open. Mark: There is good access to the freeways. Paula: Everything we need is here in Point Cook.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds an Afghan restaurant making Werribee home We are delighted to see the sort of Afghan food hitherto available in Sunshine and Footscray make its way to Werribee. Lux is a lovely set-up – the dining room sparkles with welcome, the menu covers all the bases (including going beyond charcoal-grilled meats), the prices are almost absurdly low. And the food is grand – so much so the very minor hiccups noted below barely register as any sort of speed bump. Barley chicken soup ($7) is just as homely and satisfying as it looks. It is, though, very plain of flavour – if you’re like us, you’ll be reaching for the salt shaker. Mantu ($13) are superb. The delicate dumplings are festooned with two complementary sauces – a mincey/lentil number and one of minty yoghurt. It’s taken us several years to fully get with the swing of the Afghan take on stews/curries. But now we’re fully there, happily appreciating them in their own right. Lamb qorma ($12) is a doozy – both runny and rich, with plentiful tender meat that falls away from the bones with ease. CTS knows that all of the above food is pre-prepared, so happily accept some reheating is the order of the day. However the soup and mantu are barely warm enough, the qorma not so – it is returned to the kitchen for a blast. Our qorma arrives without rice, so we have to order that extra – and it’s very good. We suspect most Lux customers go for the

Mixed kebab ($14) is a treat of two skewers of classy chicken and one each of cubed and minced lamb. Afghan bread is invariably flamboyantly large that we applaud the Lux move to offer half-size portions – for $1. Full size goes for $2. Lux runs a buffet every Thursday for $25 per person – which sounds like a bloody good deal to us. Going by the clips on the joint’s Facebook page, it’s popular, so booking is advised.

We’ve all heard about ‘walking like an Egyptian’ but how many of us know how to ‘dance like an Ethiopian’? Littlies and school kids of all ages can learn how at the fourth annual Wyndham Learning Festival, running September 1-8. To be held 9am-noon on September 7 at Arndell Park Community Centre, Dance Like an Ethiopian is a fun and interactive workshop from Ethio-Australian Youth Education. More serious topics during the festival include a presentation from clinical psychologist Andrew Fuller, From Stressed to Strong-Building Resilient Lives, 7am-9pm on September 6. Bookings required. Organised by Wyndham Youth Services, the talk is aimed at parents, teachers and other professionals on topics such as understanding and managing anxiety; depression proofing; and how to get synergistic effects for wellbeing. Another to look out for is a ‘plain English’ seminar on Parkinson’s disease presented by clinical nurse consultant Victor McConvey and community co-ordinator Kate Madden, both from Parkinson’s Victoria. The importance of peer support and social connection will be discussed and questions invited. Bookings are required. No booking is needed to take part in the Platypus and Possum Discovery Walk, organised by the Werribee River Association on September 3, from 5-7pm, it comprises a tour and talk from Werribee Riverkeeper while exploring the local platypus habitat. War on Waste fame brings his presentation to Wyndham Learning Festival, supported by local exhibitors providing tips for living more sustainably. These are just a sneak peek at the more than 160 free events to be staged throughout the City of Wyndham during the festival. One of the festival co-ordinator’s, Meg Cotter tackles the question, ‘why celebrate learning?’ “The City of Wyndham is one of the fastest growing areas in Melbourne. An average 88 babies are born each week, and recorded unemployment is higher than the national average,” Ms Cotter says. “Thirty-four per cent of the population was born overseas; more than a quarter speak English as a second language. Wyndham is therefore a community facing many challenges for its successful future. “Research shows us that learning keeps us healthier, wealthier and happier. Method Place all dough ingredients except the extra flour into a mixing bowl and mix on a medium speed for 5 minutes, spray the inside of a medium bowl and put the dough inside. Place in a NEFF oven on the proving function on level 1 for 45 minutes. Once the dough has doubled in size, remove from the oven and place on a lightly floured surface. Knock the air out and roll until the dough is 2cm thick (coat fingers with oil to prevent stickiness). Using a medium-large cookie cutter, cut into rounds and place on a tray lined with baking paper. Place back into the oven and prove for a further 30 minutes before moving across to CircoTherm® at 200°C with a high level of steam. Bake for 20 minutes then set aside to cool. Heat the jam a little and put into the piping bag and inject into the cooled donuts. Spray with oil and coat in the caster sugar.

House prices steady as indicators show slump may be over The biggest downturn in Melbourne property prices since the 1980s looks to be at an end. Melbourne’s median house price rose by 0.3 per cent in the June quarter, the first rise since December 2017. The median house price is now $818,200, which is 10 per cent below the peak reached in late 2017. Melbourne’s median unit price increased by 2 per cent in the June quarter. The median unit price is now $501,000, which is 2 per cent below the 2018 peak. House and unit prices are 49 per cent and 20 per cent higher than they were in 2013. Melbourne’s most expensive areas have seen the biggest house price falls. Houses in Melbourne’s inner-east and inner-south regions have fallen 16 per cent and 13 per cent respectively over the past year, whereas house prices were unchanged in Melbourne’s west and north-west regions. However, there are signs that prices in expensive areas are rebounding fastest. Notably, auction clearance rates in Melbourne’s most expensive regions in recent weeks are the strongest of all city regions. Melbourne’s more expensive regions tend to lead the overall market, so this is another sign that the Melbourne market may be nearing the bottom. Other indicators also point to a turnaround. More buyers are attending open for inspections, sentiment has improved and auction clearance rates are at the highest point since November 2017. Sludge drying pans use gravity, wind and heat directly from the sun to dry sludge. They are an eﬀective low-cost option for drying sludge. Warriors work their way through to the finals

It has been a tough, and at times uncertain, season for Hoppers Crossing, but it has sealed a berth in the Western Region Football League division 1 finals for a sixth consecutive year. The Warriors stamped their ticket to the September action with a 51-point win over Sunshine Kangaroos on the road at Kinder Smith Reserve on Saturday. Warriors coach Steven Kretiuk is proud of the determination from his team this season. “Midway through the year, a lot of teams wrote us off,” Kretiuk said. “We’ve got a lot of belief in this group. “We’ve got a really young group still and it’s very inexperienced in terms of playing senior footy at this level, so to be in the position where we’re at, it’s great for us. “We’re really excited to be part of the finals series going forward.” Hoppers Crossing’s depth has been tested this season. The Warriors lost some star power with injuries to Jordan Mead and Chris Endres. If there is one thing that Kretiuk has not been afraid of since his arrival at Hoppers Crossing, it is promoting youth. “We’ll continue to build from within and give these guys opportunities,” he said.

“I’m really pleased with what we’ve done without Chris Endres and Jordan Mead. “They’re arguably our two best users and playmakers. “Them pulling the pin early in the season and for us to be where we’re at with one game to go and to make the finals, it’s a great achievement by the group.” Hoppers Crossing savoured its win away to Sunshine. Historically, the Warriors have struggled to beat the Kangaroos away, and had not done so since 2016 after copping heavy losses at Kinder Smith Reserve in their past two visits. “Sunshine have really done a number on us a few times at their ground,” Kretiuk said. “They’ve lost a few players and Adam Contessa is doing the right thing and putting a lot of young guys in. “Regardless of who they’ve got and who they’ve lost, they’re really good at home. “We just needed to make sure we came out and made a statement early with our pressure, which we did.” Hoppers Crossing will host Albion in the final round, mathematically still in the hunt for a top three finish, though it is unlikely

with the three sides above them also enjoying favourable last round fixtures. One of those sides, Werribee Districts, made it four wins from their past five matches with a 107-point victory over Caroline Springs. Point Cook had a tough day at the office, losing to Spotswood by 119 points. In division 2, Wyndhamvale comfortably accounted for North Footscray by 97 points, while Point Cook Centrals had the bye. In division 3, Glen Orden slumped to its third straight loss, beaten away by Sunshine Heights to the tune of 31 points. Tarneit cruised to a 109-point win over bottom side North Footscray. In WRFL women’s, minor premiers Manor Lakes finished the home-and-away rounds on a high note with a 58-point mauling of Point Cook Centrals. Werribee Centrals tuned up for the finals with a 126-point win over Tarneit. Point Cook Centrals and Werribee Centrals will meet in the elimination final at Wootten Road Reserve on Sunday, while Manor Lakes has a safe passage through to week two of the finals. Sizzling Suns run into hot form By Lance Jenkinson Wyndham Suns have been one of the form teams in the second half of the Western Region Football League division 3 season, but will not be featuring in the finals. The Suns have left their run too late, but they are thoroughly enjoying their current four-game winning streak, including upset victories over finals-bound Sunshine Heights and Glen Orden and a massive 135-point win over Laverton at Goddard Street Reserve on Saturday. Suns playing coach Dean Cachia told of the importance of finishing the season on a high with the club already eyeing off a big 2020 season. “It’s made the world of difference [claiming wins over flag contenders],” Cachia said. “This is going to be the best way we can keep all of our players because if you don’t get those wins, guys will have doubts in their mind about wanting to stick around. “Now we’ve shown the way we can play together, it will put us in good stead for next year.” The mood around Wyndham is a vastly different one to how it was back in the summer. A mass exodus of players from the Suns’ 2018 grand final side that lost to Point Cook Centrals not only severely weakened the list, but threatened the very existence of the Suns. Cachia and a handful of heart-and-soul players stood up to save the club. “Basically in December, the club was going to fold,” Cachia said. “At that point is where I said I’m going to take the job and do whatever I can to make us survive. “I was lucky that I at least had a few senior players that wanted to stick around and help me. “Honestly, if they didn’t, Wyndham Suns wouldn’t even exist right now.” Kaine Williams put his hand up to be the senior assistant coach at Wyndham. Adam Scarpino was the first player to sign on. From there, a drip feed of players from last year re-signed and a bunch of new players arrived in time for the start of the season before more arrived mid-season. A powerhouse team in recent years, Wyndham had to look from a different viewpoint as one of the also-rans of the

competition in the first half of the year. However, that has all changed in the second half of the year, with the Suns having won five of their past six games. While Cachia is proud of the “spirit” that exists at Wyndham, he is most proud of the fact the club’s juniors are up and running again. “That’s where the future of the club is,” he said. “You need a strong junior club to have the players coming through to be a good senior

club.” Cachia was full of praise for ruckman Michael Ryan, onballer Paul Tomelty and homegrown youngster Jarrod Vella. The trio have been dominant for Wyndham all season and have all turned their backs on overtures from rivals to stay loyal to the Suns. “These are the guys that got offered money to leave, but they’re all committed to the club for next year,” Cachia said. “It shows that we’re going in the right direction.”

Cachia’s recruiting campaign for 2020 starts now. Werribee Centrals have fine-tuned for the Geelong and District Football League Smiths Holden Cup finals with a barrage of goals. Centrals delivered a 163-point win over cellar dweller Corio in the final round at Galvin Park on Saturday. It became apparent from early in the contest that the Centurions were on their way to a comfortable victory – one that secured them a double chance in the finals. Centurions coach Nick Smith was more concerned with the health of his players rather than with the margin, because Corio provided a physical test until the final siren provided mercy on its horror, winless season. “Traditionally, they’re a pretty strong and physical side and they brought a fair bit of that,” Smith said. “I know it’s been a long hard year for them, but they fought it out. “It was good to get a nice big win … we were still playing to secure that top-three spot and now we’ve done it, so we can enjoy tonight.” Centrals showed how damaging they can be

on a dry track. The Centurions’ strength is their spread from the pack. The likes of Brad Carlton, Matthew Millar and Daryl Chesterman thrived on the fast track. Reece Miles was again the superior player at the stoppages. “The make-up of our team is we like to run, we like to take the game on, so the conditions today suited us,” Smith said. “It set up an opportunity to score and score heavy.” The major beneficiary of Werribee Centrals quick transfers from the middle to attack was Nathan Johnson. While the Centurions have been one of the dominant sides in the second half of the season, finals will be a bit of an unknown for them. “The majority of my team haven’t played in finals,” Smith said. “It will be interesting to see how they handle the build-up. “I’ll certainly be reminding them that it is an exciting time and you want to soak up the whole experience of being able to play finals.” Lance Jenkinson

Late shot wins the day By Lance Jenkinson It was better late than never for Hoppers Crossing in the Football Victoria men’s state league 2 north-west at the weekend. The Reds preserved their spot at the top of the ladder courtesy of a 94th minute winner from the penalty spot to prolific scorer Jason Hayne in a 1-0 victory over Epping City at Grange Reserve. Hayne took the plaudits for his goal, but it was Matthew Scott who was the architect. Scott produced a marauding run from the midfield, weaving through a tiring Epping City defence and drawing a penalty from a sloppy tackle. “He drove the ball from midfield into our attacking half and just kept going,” Reds coach Shaun Barbara said. “The space opened up for him, so he kept driving towards the box and got brought down. “Fortunately one of their most experienced defenders had a rush of blood to the head, dived in for a tackle and we got the penalty.” With only one point separating Hoppers Crossing with second-placed Fitzroy City, the importance of extracting maximum points out of the contest was not lost on the players. Hayne took the responsibility to kick the Reds to victory from the spot and never hesitated. “There was only going to be one man step up really,” Barbara said. “He grabbed the ball, put it on to the spot and put it in the top corner. “The goalkeeper went the right way, but there was too much power and it was clinically put into the top corner.” This was one of Hoppers Crossing’s gutsiest wins of the season. There were times when the Reds rode their luck with the crossbar coming to the rescue, a defender clearing off the line or goalkeeper Washington Bgoni pulling off a great save. Bgoni has been outstanding in his two games since taking over from first choice goalkeeper Kieron Sharratt, who succumbed to a facial injury. Bgoni has kept clean sheets against the two title contending teams. “The kid’s done really well,” Barbara said. “He’s been working hard with Kieron all year. “He’s been biding his time, he’s been patient and working his socks off in the ressies, so he got his chance against Corio and he’s done well.” While Hoppers Crossing had its fair share of luck, it created its own luck in the second half. The Reds got stronger as the game went on and threatened constantly in the final 20 minutes. The match-winning goal was no mean feat against a stubborn Epping City.

“They’re really well organised, well disciplined,” Barbara said. “They’ve got some really good individual players as well. “We knew how hard it was going to be and thankfully the boys stuck to the task. “We’re at home, it’s our ground, so we want

to really take the game to them. The last 15 or 20 minutes, we certainly did that.” The key drivers through the midfield for Hoppers Crossing were Scott, Junya Takabatake and Takuya Yoshimi. Hoppers Crossing will visit seventh-placed Geelong Rangers in the 20th round on Saturday.

Werribee City has produced a spectacular come-from-behind 2-1 win over Murray United to stay alive in the NPL Victoria 2 west soccer premiership race. The third-placed Bees were staring down the barrel at half-time, trailing to a 24th minute goal from Murray’s Aaron Midon. But a pair of second-half goals five minutes apart from Shaun Hodor saw Werribee City swoop on all three points. Hodor scored in the 55th and 59th minutes – much to the delight of Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini. “Shaun was great for us,” he said. “He got on to a couple of crosses at the far post.” The implementation of a new defensive back three was ultimately hailed a success for Werribee City. The trio of Nick Bavcar, Daniel Petrov and Julyan Collett patrolled the last line. Sabbadini admits the workings of the back three took a bit of time to gel and that it might have played a part in the half-time deficit. But it was a key factor in the Bees getting back into the match. It will be interesting to see if Werribee City persists with the new back three against second-placed Moreland Zebras at Galvin Park on Saturday. The Bees are two points behind St Albans Saints and the Zebras with three rounds to play. They will face the Zebras and the Saints in consecutive weeks. City West Falcon is a high flier When City West Falcons goal defence Mel Oloamanu walks your way on a netball court, you know you are in for a hard game. Pity the opponent who faced the energetic Oloamanu in the Victorian Netball League 19-and-under grand final at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. Oloamanu helped the Falcons to a 53-41 win over Peninsula Waves in the season decider, taking out the player of the match award in the process. “It felt like a dream, winning the game,” Oloamanu said. “When they called my name [for player of the match], I was in shock, I was speechless.” Oloamanu, 16, is one of the brightest young prospects in Australian netball. She represented Victoria at under-17 level for the first time this year. The Westside Saints-developed youngster starred for the Big V during her 15-and-under years, so the step up was a natural progression. The year 10 Melton Secondary College student was part of the Victorian team that took out fourth place at the under-17 nationals, but she will get the chance to atone next season.

The biggest accomplishment for Oloamanu came on the international stage as a co-captain of the Australian under-16 netball team. Pulling on the green and gold for the first time this year is something she will never forget. The former Hoppers Crossing junior cherished every moment, despite the sour ending – a one-goal loss to arch-rivals New Zealand in the final. “It was just an amazing experience to go out there and represent this country. “Even though we won silver, I reckon the memories are gold.” Oloamanu was initially uncertain about taking on the co-captaincy of Australia. “At first … I thought it would put pressure on me,” Oloamanu said. “With the help of my two co-captains, it just helped me a lot. We made sure we brought confidence to the team and everything was in place. It was just amazing.” Oloamanu, who idolises English netballer Gave Mentor, grabbed the chance to debut for City West Falcons in the top-flight VNL championship. Despite being half the age of some of the

opposition, Oloamanu performed strongly in limited time on court. “I was so nervous getting on to court, my knees were shaking,” Oloamanu said. “Once I was out there, I think I did perform well, but it was because of the help of the other girls on the court.” Oloamanu, a skilled defender with strong leadership qualities, has set a goal of earning a scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport. With spots limited, she knows she will need to keep performing at state and national level to be considered. Oloamanu is the August nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Oloamanu will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist her in achieving her sports goals. Lance Jenkinson

The Devils did what some thought impossible and end the era of dominance by back-to-back defending champions Sunbury Jets. The brave Devils ventured to the Boardman Stadium as underdogs for the preliminary final on Saturday night and returned with a memorable 77-74 win. They have set up a showdown with Keilor Thunder in a best-of-three grand final series starting at Eagle Stadium this Saturday night for the right to be crowned the new champions. Corey Michailidis, standing in as coach of the Devils for the first time while Reece Potter is overseas on national representative coaching duty, described ecstatic scenes in the Devils rooms following the upset victory. “I can’t put into words how incredible it is what they’ve achieved,” Michailidis said. “The scenes in the locker rooms and the energy was incredible. “Sunbury were very much the team to beat throughout the year and we were always going to be the underdogs. “Everyone was ecstatic to win on their home court.” Werribee had planned meticulously for a tight finish. The Devils’ training all week leading up to the big game was focused on executing in late game situations. The repetition paid off huge dividends in the dying stages of the cut-throat preliminary final. “Throughout the week, Reece made sure that the assistant coaches and the players were all on board with how we wanted to play,” Michailidis said. “We were expecting a close contest from the outset, we knew it was going to be a tough 40 minute game and during the week we rehearsed a few different scenarios that we thought we might find ourselves in during the game and it was actually quite easy getting into late game mode when the time came. “We scripted it and that made it easier, so full credit to Reece for that one.” Werribee produced one of its best team performances of the season to down Sunbury. The Devils had no standout individuals, but many contributors. “Across the board, it was an incredible team effort,” Michailidis said. Sam Moodie was lauded for presence in the game. Werribee will face western rivals Williamstown in a last round blockbuster before the Victorian Football League finals at Downer Oval on Saturday night. It will be a competitive lead-in with both sides showing the potential to go deep into the finals. “There’s a big rivalry there between the two teams,” Werribee forward Jake Riccardi said. “They’re a top four side, so if we could get a win against them, it would be massive.”

United will face state league club Caroline Springs George Cross in a pre-season friendly at City Vista Recreation Reserve from 7pm.
