Helping hand for James By Alesha Capone For young James Quinn, it’s a helping hand like no other. The four-year-old boy has been given a Batman-inspired prosthetic hand, thanks to an innovative and environmentally-friendly organisation based in the west. James, who was born with an underdeveloped hand, was last week presented with a plastic “Phoenix Hand” which will assist him in learning how to manipulate his hand muscles and provide mobility support. The Phoenix Hand was created at the Werribee-based Envision Hands, a joint venture between charity Envision and the

Wyndham Rotary Club. The project turns recycled plastic bottle caps into prosthetic arms and hands for children around the world. Envision Hands is aiming to collect one million bottle tops and turn them into 100 prosthetic hands and arms before the end of the year. The initiative, a world-first, involves the plastic from donated bottle caps being turned into material used to create parts for a

custom-made artificial limb, via a 3D printer. The Coca-Cola Foundation has provided Envision Hands with a grant to purchase a “Shruder”, a plastic shredding machine created by Plastic Collective, so they can shred the bottle tops. James’ mother Melissa Quinn said their family found out about the Envision Hands project after a breakfast lady from her son’s kindergarten contacted the project’s founder, Sean Teer, on their behalf. “Sean said that he and Joe (project co-ordinator Joe Ferlazzo) would love to meet all of us, measure James up for a prosthetic hand and we did just that,” she said. Mrs Quinn said that the Envision Hands

team had visited the kindergarten, and their family’s Melton home, to measure and fit James’ prosthetic. Mrs Quinn said James was “a massive superhero fan” and that he had described his Batman-inspired hand as “brilliant”. “James is such a smart, confident boy and we only want to see his confidence keep growing as he gets older,” she said. “We hope that by having this prosthetic it will allow him to stay confident and the cool factor of it being a superhero hand will help the way other kids interact with James as well.” Envision has set up webpage to raise funds. Call to improve Duncans Road By Alesha Capone A woman who was hospitalised, along with her partner, after a two-car collision on Duncans Road has started a petition to upgrade the road. More than 210 people have signed Katherine Ewert’s petition at Change.org, which says Duncans Road is “notorious for car accidents”. “Cars overtake onto oncoming traffic all the time – even when it is unsafe to do so,” the petition says. The petition also says Duncans Road needs to be widened, with the installation of service

lanes for tractors, traffic lights, speed humps, speed cameras and more lighting. Ms Ewert said the collision occurred last month, about 5.30pm on a Sunday. “It was extremely foggy so I was driving pretty cautiously [around 50-60 kilometres] down Duncans Road,” she said. “A black Mercedes flew out of Aviation Road, didn’t give way – probably because he couldn’t see the intersection, regardless he was driving way too fast in terrible conditions – then turned/swerved onto Duncans Road, lost control of his vehicle and hit us head on.

“I put my foot on the brake but it was too late.” Both Ms Ewert and her partner Paul were taken by ambulance to the Alfred Hospital. Ms Ewert suffered from whiplash and a sore neck, while Paul was diagnosed with bruised ribs. Ms Ewert said that in something of a coincidence, she and Paul were talking about how dangerous Duncans Road is when the other car hit their vehicle. A Department of Transport spokesperson said: “Wyndham continues to grow rapidly

One of Australia’s oldest Lions is on the road to recovery after a risky surgery at Werribee Open Range Zoo. Veterinarians and specialist surgeons removed a heamangiosarcoma tumour, a malignant cancer, larger than a golf ball from 18 year-old Jarrah’s neck in delicate surgery last month. The cancer was detected as a large lump by zoo keepers in May, during one of Jarrah’s regular visual health checks.

A new intersection is being built on Little River Road to give vehicles “safe and easy access” to the youth justice precinct being built at Cherry Creek. According to the Department of Justice and Community Safety’s website (DJCS), the intersection will feature a turning lane to provide motorists driving westbound along Little River Road, including traffic exiting the Princes Freeway, with a separate lane to turn right on the precinct’s access road. Construction of the new intersection began this month and is due to be completed by September. Works to realign the left turn-off ramp from the Princes Freeway will also be carried out, to improve sight lines for vehicles exiting the freeway. The DJCS website said that during construction of the new intersection, there would be disruptions to traffic on Little River Road. During works, a single lane will be put in place for vehicles to use, for a distance of about 400 meters next to the intersection. This section of road is expected to return to use as a dual lane by September. In addition, during construction the speed limit near the intersection will be reduced from 100 kilometres an hour to 40 kilometres an hour. Motorists have also been warned to expect a “temporary increase in truck movement, with materials being delivered to the site during working hours”. A woman has died following a single-vehicle crash in Truganina on July 7. Police said they believe the woman was driving in her vehicle along the Western Freeway, when it veered off road and into a wire rope barrier about 5.45pm. The 35-year-old Rockbank woman died the next day.

Itâ€™s time to get in the frame for a good cause. Hoppers Crossing photographer Imran Abul Kashem will hold a fundraising event for the Werribee Mercy Hospital this week. Mr Kashem, who runs Westend Photography, said the â€œItâ€™s Time To Shine Fundraiserâ€? would be held on the weekend of July 20 and 21. He said that during the fundraiser, he would take head-and-shoulders photos of attendees, for them to use on social media, a website or personal branding. He said that each photo session would go for between 10 to 15 minutes. Mr Kashem said that participants would pay $50 for the session and photos. Half of the price will be donated to the Werribee Hospital Foundation, and the other half of the price will go towards costs of the fundraising event.

Mr Kashem came to Australia, from his native Bangladesh, in 2008. He has two children, Taha and Tanna, with wife Nina Razzak. Mr Kashem said that Tanna was born in the Werribee Mercy Hospital. â€œMy wife and I feel grateful that we have such a wonderful hospital â– in our municipality,â€? he said. â€œAustralians may not realise how lucky we are compared to the hospital facilities in rural Bangladesh.â€? New food rises from scrap Turning fruit and veggie scraps into chips or farm animal food are just the tip of the iceberg for Wyndham’s Catherine Velisha who aims to change the sustainable farming game. The chief executive of Velisha National Farms is on a journey to operate completely on recyclable and combustible materials and hopes to set the bar for the industry by being part of the national waste management scheme Aspire. Started by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in 2015 the program works with councils to match material resources, or waste, between companies, manufacturers, re-manufacturers and recyclers to identify alternative supply chains. For Ms Velisha, turning zucchinis into chips and food waste into fodder or compost is just part of her plan for sustainable business practice. “There’s a lot of waste in the food industry. A few years ago we had zucchini’s that were too big to sell, so we approached a company that could turn them into chips,” Ms Velisha said. “There’s also a lot of biomass waste in farming, like broccoli stems or lettuce scraps. “We’re now looking to add fibre additives into it to produce livestock fodder. “We’re already in the process of getting rid of single-use plastics and are aiming to use 100 percent recyclable and combustible material in the next few years. “We want everything we use as a business to be recyclable or biodegradable – from having cardboard boxes used as concrete additives, to vegetable wrap that will break down in a matter of months.” Aspire chief executive Cameron McKenzie said Wyndham council was one of the latest councils to join the program which had reduced

Ten-year-old Lilly is well on track to represent Victoria at a national sporting competition. A pupil at Mossfiel Primary School in Hoppers Crossing, she has been selected for the School Sport Victoria 10 to 12 year-old team, which will head to Darwin in September. Lilly will participate in the discus category at the School Sport Australia Championship. Lilly said that she might also take part in shot-put at the event, if another pupil is unable to attend. Lilly said she “felt really, really excited and really happy” after being selected for the state team, following a trial held at Lakeside Stadium. As a member of Altona Little Athletics, Lilly said that this year, she had placed first in the regional Little Athletics competition for discus and shot-put. Ben gets the chocolates Young performer Ben Belsey has been given a golden opportunity to star on stage. The 10 year-old from Point Cook is one of five boys selected to play the role of Charlie Bucket in the upcoming Melbourne production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which will open at Her Majesty’s Theatre next month. Ben said he felt “pretty excited” to land the role after the audition process, which included multiple callbacks. “It was my first audition for a professional production, so I didn’t think I’d get it because I didn’t have the experience,” he said. Cops probe footy coach attack By Lance Jenkinson Victoria Police and the Western Region Football League are investigating after a heated after-game confrontation led to St Albans coach Perry Meka requiring hospital treatment. The WRFL confirmed an incident took place after the Hoppers Crossing and St Albans division 1 game at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday, July 6. Video of the incident shows supporters gathered outside the ground. It is alleged that soon after, the St Albans coach was struck and

taken to hospital with head injuries. A WRFL statement said: “The WRFL can confirm an alleged incident took place 45 minutes to an hour after Saturday’s senior match between Hoppers Crossing and St Albans. The WRFL is investigating further, as are the two clubs. “The WRFL is proud of the tireless work clubs and the league undertake to establish a safe, welcoming and family-friendly environment.” Hoppers Crossing president Darren Cassar condemned acts of violence at football matches. Cassar, who had left Hogans Road Reserve before the alleged incident took place, offered

his support to Meka and stood in solidarity with St Albans president James Perkin. “Football clubs and football grounds are a happy place for people to come and show support, regardless of what team they’re supporting, and should be made to feel safe,” he said. Cassar has been in contact with Meka since the alleged incident to check on his health. “I’ve spoken to him three times and he seems to be OK,” Cassar said. “I wish St Albans all the very best for the remainder of the year. I wish Perry Meka all the very best.”

Cassar said the Hoppers Crossing Football Club had co-operated with both Victoria Police and WRFL investigations. He praised the WRFL for its support of both sides. “The WRFL have been instrumental again in support to both clubs,” Cassar said. “I really hope we can all move on as a football community.” Perkin said he had been instructed by Victoria Police not to comment on what is an ongoing investigation. “Police have instructed me to say nothing,” Perkin said.

The not-for-profit organisation aims to help disadvantaged Australians through sports and arts programs. Founder Peter Cullen said that at the moment, Reclink’s Street Struggle Sports Equipment Program was seeking donations of unused sports equipment and gear, especially AFL boots, soccer boots and balls. He said that some families had donated football boots their children had outgrown. “What’s lying idle in every second or third house can become a source of great joy to others,” Mr Cullen said. Mr Cullen said the Werribee Basketball Association had donated 70 basketballs to the cause. In addition, after a man living in Mr Cullen’s street heard about the Reclink program, he

approached the Essendon Football Club for donations, and the club provided VFL shorts, jumpers and footballs. Mr Cullen said that when Reclink gave the donated sports equipment and gear to its clients, the donations came with a message saying: “You matter”. “Some people become quite emotional just seeing or hearing those words,” he said. Green gong for pipeline A Greening the Pipeline pilot park project in Williams Landing has received an architecture award. The pilot park, which covers a 120 metre section of the pipeline between Triller Court and Mallard Close, has received a Land Management Award for Excellence at the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects’ 2019 state Landscape Architecture Awards. Greening the Pipeline is a project between Melbourne Water, VicRoads, Wyndham council and City West Water, supported by Greening the West. The joint partnership is aiming to convert 27 kilometres of the heritage-listed Main Outfall Sewer reserve, along Federation Trail, into parkland.

Melbourne Water’s land and collaborative planning manager Victoria Penko, said the Land Management Award was a win for all of the project partners as well as the pilot park’s architects, GHD Woodhead. “It’s wonderful to have the work of all partners acknowledged in this award – but the real measure of success is the wonderful feedback we receive from the local community and park visitors. “We’re seeing lots of people being active in the new park, whether they’re cycling, walking, or making the most of park features such as the community garden and gym equipment,” Ms Penko said.

Booze concern for new migrants By Esther Lauaki Indian migrants to Wyndham and Hobsons Bay are among those consuming â€œrisky levelsâ€? of alcohol, a new study has revealed. The report, sanctioned earlier this year by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, explored alcohol and drug related issues within people aged between 25 and 44 in the Indian community â€“ particularly in the west. Researcher Ruchika Rawat said the aim of the study, which included Wyndham and Hobsons Bay residents, was to investigate alcohol-related perspectives and possible harm. â€œThis large influx of migrants has not been without issues associated with settling in a new country, a new culture and adjusting to working in Australia,â€? Ms Rawat said. She said the report revealed a â€œperceivedâ€? increase in alcohol consumption among the participants in both daily and habitual drinking as well as binge drinking at social events. â€œMen tended to drink more frequently and at higher levels, compared with women,â€? Ms Rawat said. She said the data showed that more education around safe drinking levels was needed. â€œWe found notable barriers in seeking formal and informal help because of a perceived social stigma, or reluctance to seek help from mainstream services because of their lack of understanding of Indian cultural norms,â€? Ms Rawat said. â€œThe next step for this project is raising community awareness, increasing engagement workshops along with the development of a community action plan and culturally appropriate health resources.â€?

Finding Nemoâ€™s hidden treasure Two Wyndham winter dippers are trying to find â€˜Nemoâ€™. Navanya Matthews and Rea Haare brave the chill for the weekly Winter Dip events off Altona Pier and came across a sunken treasure earlier this month â€“ a knife engraved with Happy 21st Nemo. â€œWe go to the Winter Dip every Wednesday and Saturday and one of the members dropped their keys,â€? Ms Matthews said. â€œRea was helping to look for the keys and found this knife under the pier just peeking out of the sand for her to see. â€œWeâ€™ve been told that the knife is quite a good quality one and it looks like it was a special gift and we would love to find the owner.â€? Ms Matthews took her search to local residentsâ€™ group Facebook pages but to no avail. â€œItâ€™s likely someone dropped it while fishing off the pier but people have come up with a lot of theories about the story behind the knife filled with murder and mystery,â€? she said. EPA moves to stop waste growth By Esther Lauaki Trouble-plagued recycler SKM Services has been ordered to stop accepting recyclables at its Laverton North site for the second time in three months. The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) shut down operations at the company’s Cooleroo and Laverton North sites in March forcing councils to send recyclable waste to the tip. The latest notices were issued to the company last week following a fire that broke out at one

of its Gilbertson Road warehouses on Monday, in what is at least the 10th major factory fire at a waste facility since October last year. The company will still be able to process waste at its Laverton North site while the notice is in place, but will not be able to receive any new materials until the EPA is satisfied that it is compliant. EPA chief Paul Stacchino said SKM Services failed to bring its outdoor stockpiles at the two sites into compliance with the Victorian Waste Management Policy by July 3 – instead allowing them to grow.

“The EPA has taken this action to reduce any potential risks to human health and the environment posed by stockpiles of recyclable waste materials at the site,” Mr Stacchino said. “It has been almost two years since the Victorian Waste Management Policy was introduced, which in EPA’s view has given

industry ample time to modify business practices to ensure ongoing compliance with its requirements. “The notices did not prevent SKM from receiving combustible recyclable waste materials at the sites.” He said the company requested two extensions to those notices and SKM Services must be compliant by July 17. Mr Stacchino said the EPA granted the extensions with strict conditions. More than 60 inspections across the two sites were carried out this year.

Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said the awards were a chance to recognise and thank those who contributed their time to the community. “George has provided excellent frontline customer service to visitors in the Wyndham area and shared his knowledge of the many wonderful destinations and experiences available in Wyndham,” Cr Shaw said. “Volunteers keep our local sporting or

community groups running, care for our environment, contribute to art and culture, build engagement and connection between diverse groups of people, and support the health and wellbeing of others.” Other recipients for the awards included: Community Engagement Award, Erum Ali; Young Volunteer of the Year, Emily Lacy; Community Health and Wellbeing, Roger Vistarini; Environment and Sustainability, Lisa Field; Sports and Recreation, Gaurav Malhotra. “The contributions of each one of these individuals helps make our community a better, more vibrant, inclusive and welcoming place for all of us,” Cr Shaw said. Murderer jailed for 20 years By Alesha Capone A man who pleaded guilty to murdering his mother in their Werribee house has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, with a minimum of 14 years before he will become eligible for parole. Jamie Ian Willis received the sentence in the Supreme Court last month (June 20), for killing his mother, Caroline Willis. Willis, 39, stabbed Caroline, 70, to death in their Taworri Crescent residence on May 24 last year.

Justice Lex Lasry said that on May 21 last year, an interim intervention order was issued against Willis, which required him to leave the residence. The court heard that Caroline’s application for the intervention order said Willis was committing “family violence” against her including “verbal abuse, controlling behaviour and intimidation”. The application alleged that Willis had stolen Caroline’s credit cards and her driver’s licence. A few hours after police served the intervention order, Willis returned home and

stabbed Caroline 19 times in her torso, upper limbs and left leg. Justice Lasry said Caroline also sustained rib fractures and multiple blunt force injuries to the head and neck. After Willis stabbed his mother, he left the house and used methamphetamine. The court heard that afterwards, Willis told police that four men had attended the house, held him at gunpoint and stabbed Caroline. But Willis later admitted to killing his mother. The court heard Willis had “a long history of

Rachel Cassidy, herself targeted by a stalker, will share research and interviews with stalking survivors as well as police officers, forensic experts and lawyers who represent both the victims and perpetrators in her latest book Stalked: The Human Target. The book, which Cassidy will speak on this Friday at the Plaza library, is a detailed account of the effects of stalking and includes an interview with a convicted perpetrator. Cassidy, who is the chief executive of the Stop Stalking Now Foundation, is a passionate advocate to create public awareness and change. “I wrote the book because I’d had a personal experience, plus I knew people who had been through it,” she said. “It can be a very isolating experience.

“Everytime I speak about it, there are so many people in the audience that come up to me who say, ‘This happened to me and I didn’t know who to speak to about it’. “It’s so prevalent in our community … I hope that it starts a conversation and creates awareness around the issue.” Relationship expert Debbie Zita, who was targeted by an online stalker a year ago, said education about what photos and information people share is needed. “Being able to recognise inappropriate behaviour and shut it down immediately is important,” Ms Zita said. “We all want to feel loved and connected but if someone doesn’t set a boundary, then there will always be people that cross it.” Cassidy will speak at the library on Friday, July 19 at 6.30pm. A report prepared by a forensic psychiatrist, which was presented to the court, concluded that Willis suffered from paranoid schizophrenia with a substantial association with polysubstance abuse. Sentencing Willis, Justice Lasry described his actions in killing Caroline as “a frenzied, violent attack on your mother in her home”. “Once more a woman has been murdered in her own home where she should have felt safe, secure and protected, especially in light of the intervention order,” Justice Lasry said.

Thomas Carr College students will leave their custom comforts at home for a night to shed some light on Victorians doing it rough. Students will sleep at the school gym next weekend as part of their own Winter Sleepout fundraising event. Principal Craig Holmes led by example when he braved the chill at the Vinnies Sleepout on the rooftop of the South Melbourne Market, to raise money for the St Vincent de Paul Society, last month. “It’s about raising awareness about homelessness in Melbourne,” Mr Holmes said. “I was asked by our Social Justice group in the school if I would take part and it was with some trepidation that I agreed. “It was freezing! All I had was cardboard to

sleep on … it was a very authentic experience.” He said he hoped that the event would change the students’ perspectives. “You get up in the morning and you go home and have a hot shower … but there is definitely the guilt that others out there don’t have the same experience,” Mr Holmes said of his Vinnes Sleepout experience. “The stereotype of who we see as homeless really has to change. “People aren’t aware about who is affected.” The money raised from the Thomas Carr College sleepout will go to Vinnies which provides a breakfast club program at the school. Pool bid makes a splash By Goya Dmytryshchak A $65 million aquatic strategy for Hobsons Bay, including a new pool in Altona Meadows and replacing Laverton pool with an outdoor water park, was last week adopted by the council. However, the exact location of the “Western Aquatic Centre” in Bruce Comben Reserve is yet to be determined following strong opposition to the proposed demolition of Cooraminta Children’s Centre to make way for the pool. A petition with 565 signatures was tabled at last week’s council meeting asking that the children’s centre not be demolished in favour of the pool. Cr Colleen Gates told the meeting a stakeholder reference group, which will include a representative from Cooraminta, would be established to help guide the aquatic centre’s development. “We’ve taken reference to demolition of children’s centres out of the strategy, we’ve taken concept plans out of the strategy, because we recognise that that needs to be developed in consultation with the people who are most invested in that part of the precinct,” Cr Gates said. Community feedback on the aquatic plan had requested a 50 metre pool instead of the planned 25-metre pool. However, a council officer’s report stated that a 50 metre pool needed a catchment of more than 100,000 people to be financially viable and this could not be achieved in Hobsons Bay. Also planned under the strategy is an expansion of Bayfit Leisure Centre at Altona North, while Laverton Swim and Fitness Centre will be replaced with a water park and youth facility at the adjacent playground in McCormack Park.

A new Lord of the Fries restaurant is set to open at Pacific Werribee later this year. I have lived in Hoppers Crossing for now around 15 years and all my children (three boys and a girl) have been involved in lots of schools, community groups and churches in the area. I catch the train and work in the city for NAB and also run a music school on the side. What are you passionate about? I’m passionate about seeing children and adults grow and develop their musical skills. I love seeing young children enjoy, have fun and be passionate for music just as I was when I was growing up in a country town. Why did you start the Davies Music School? I started learning at the age of eight, in a family of four who all did piano in Ararat, Victoria. My next door neighbour was my first student. I taught her as a hobby. This on-the-side job has turned from a hobby into a successful business with more than 400 students per week having lessons. We turned our one-room studio into a three-room studio starting this term. We also have teachers working from their own studios and driving to students homes. Once I started teaching my love of music teaching came back and within a few months, word of mouth got around and I had a handful of students. We now have about 50 music teachers and cover most of the western suburbs of Melbourne and beyond. We have grown from that one student next door to just under 400 students overall in a relatively short time

What is the most rewarding thing about running Davies Music School? The most rewarding thing is that you can see that the clients are so happy in your services that they tell their friends. There friends ring up and say they have been recommended and would like a certain teacher to teach their kids! What hats do you wear in the Wyndham community? One is a father to four kids, one of which has charge syndrome, so we are often running from speech therapists, to doctors and medical professionals of all types. Another hat is that we help run a friendship group for our local church at Enjoy Church based in Sunshine. I also am a banker. What’s the quirkiest thing about you? I love to play computer games when I have time and have played online Fortnite games with my sons’ school friends. My son always mostly wins and calls me hopeless. What do you love about Wyndham? I love Wyndham’s multi-culture influence. We have restaurants of every kind and great schools and churches. What would you like to see improved?

Youth funding boost The state government has provided $1.2 million in funding for a project which helps South Sudanese youths to access education and jobs in the west. Minister for Youth Gabrielle Williams last week visited the Wyndham Community Support Group, which is based at the Wyndham Community and Education Centre in Werribee, to announce the funding. Ms Williams said the funding would allow the community support group, which will now be known as Junubi Wyndham, to continue for another year. The program, which is staffed by youth workers and staff from South Sudanese backgrounds, began in 2017 as a pilot program. Ms Williams said that Junubi Wyndham

would continue to connect South Sudanese young people with education, employment and their community through sport and recreation activities, mentoring, family support and youth outreach, such as outdoor soccer, free basketball coaching and a homework club at the Point Cook Community Learning Centre. The Community Support Group workers also offer tailored support for families including help with financial management, job seeking, housing, parenting, and mental health. Call for cancer screen It’s time for more Wyndham women to step up to the plate. Breast screening Victoria data shows more than 1500 women in Victoria aged between 50 and 74 may have breast cancer and not know it – and 33 of them live in Wyndham. Chief executive Vicki Pridmore said recent figures indicated that the screening rate in the area is sitting much lower compared to the Victorian average. “With Wyndham being one of the fastest growing cities in Australia, this is a major source of concern,” Ms Pridmore said. “We need to significantly increase the numbers of women screening and in turn reduce the numbers of women dying from this disease. “Breast cancer is the second biggest cancer

killer of Australian women, yet only half of all eligible women in the BreastScreen Victoria target age group are being screened regularly. “A breast screen can find cancer as small as a grain of rice, long before a woman or her doctor can see or feel anything.” Ms Pridmore said almost 280,000 women across the state have not had their recommended screening mammogram in the past two years. Even the famous “Believe it or not” Ripley would have to work hard to believe the series of events which occurred in relation to a Werribee house recently. The house, in Church Street, Werribee, was the scene of a minor riot after a party and a subsequent alleged burglary when a wallet was left behind by the intruders.

Seven butchers have been interviewed and charges will be laid following a series of raids on metropolitan butcher shops by Werribee CIB detectives, last week. The raids recovered more than one tonne of a five-tonne meat haul stolen from the Polar Cold Storage factory at Pipe Rd, Laverton, a fortnight ago.

The couple behind a controversial property proposal in Hoppers Crossing have hit back at detractors, claiming they have done “everything possible” to inform neighbours and Wyndham council about their development. As the Banner reported last week, residents living around Grevillia Crescent are up in arms about the proposed two-unit development, planned for a vacant lot on the corner of the crescent and Palm Street.

After copping criticism across the municipality, Wyndham Council has backed down on its proposed rate hikes in its 2009-10 budget, formally adopted on Monday night. The 6.3 per cent increase for residential rates has been reduced to 5.2 per cent, and industrial rates, which were set to jump by 21.5 per cent, will now rise by 12.7 per cent.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a flavour hit at a Footscray mainstay What an ornament to Footscray Littlefoot has become. The first bar to set up shop in Footscray central, Littlefoot continues to carry a kitchen, unlike most of its neighbouring bar fellows. We are happy to accept an invitation to take the new winter menu for a run (see full disclosure below). On this night, Team CTS consists of myself, Bennie, Justin and Will. We eat well and deeply, coming away happy and satisfied. Some of the tucker is right there in bar food mode – the sort of things you’d be happy to get a bite of if you were imbibing at Littlefoot anyway. But some things we think are on another, higher level – making Littlefoot a food destination in its own right. The charcuterie board ($25) is a good starter for us – tonight we are hungry lads. It’s mix of sour, salty, oily and chewy would also be an ideal light meal for two. The DIY taco board ($18) is a hit. The four fish pieces – snapper – are superbly crumbed and deep-fried, holding together beaut even under the strain of taco construction. The flesh is both firmish and delicate. Of the bits and pieces, it’s the red cabbage that adds tangy contrast. It’s joined by guacamole, jalapenos, lime and swathes of fresh coriander. Just as expertly fried are the mac ‘n’ cheese croquettes ($12) – this is glorious stodge. Could’ve done with a bit more seasoning, IMO.

This handy handful is accompanied by good chips. If anything, our jackfruit burger ($20) is more noteworthy for the simple reason it offers an alternative to lentil patties and the like. It’s done out in Wild West style – and that means a zingy combo of jalapenos, sriracha, caramelised onions, mustard, cheese, tomato and lettuce. Hard working Centurions shut down reigning premiers Werribee Centrals has upset the apple cart with a stunning 51-point win over reigning premiers Thomson in the Geelong and District Football League Smiths Holden Cup. The Centurions not only spoiled the Tigers plans of going through the season undefeated, but sent a warning to the rest of the league that they should be taken seriously in the chase for the flag. Centurions coach Nick Smith might have been the only person who had faith in his young team taking down the star-studded Tigers. “It was easily our best win for the year,” he said. “I’ve said that a couple of times this year, but it’s going to be hard to beat that one. “I’ve got a very young group that haven’t played a lot of senior footy. “I’ve always said that once they start to believe in themselves and understand what they’re capable of, look out.” Werribee Centrals totally dismantled its highly-rated opposition. The Centurions incredibly held Thomson goal-less until three quarter time. They led 70 to six at the final change before

Thomson kicked four goals in a junk time fourth quarter. Smith did not exactly reinvent the wheel to guide the Centurions to the famous victory. “We really simplifield our game plan down to out-work and out-number and pretty much that’s what we did to them,” Smith said. “It’s hard to counteract because it’s not a very complex game plan, but it’s very hard to deal with. “If we’re out-numbering you and out-working you, it means we’ve got more people around the footy than you and that usually gets you the footy.” It was not all about the winning the midfield battle for Werribee Centrals. The Centurions had to get the job done at both ends of the ground to complete the plan. Defensively, Werribee Centrals was at its best, holding the runaway top attack in the league without a major over three quarters. In attack, they scored a steady stream of goals to build an unassailable lead. “It wasn’t total possession dominance, they got a lot of the footy, but to keep the top team

and reigning premiers goal-less by three quarter time, you’ve got to play some decent defence,” Smith said. “We also had some pretty good dangerous forwards finishing off the work, which is important too because you’re got to do more than just crack in and win the footy.” Brayden Smith did it all for Werribee Centrals at centre half back. He organised his young defence, intercepted the aerial balls and rebounded out of defensive 50. Zac Anthony, Chad Buck and Sam Browne had important roles in defence. Nathan Johnson was again Werribee Centrals’ prime target with four goals. Werribee Centrals remains in fourth place, but has opened up a six-point gap on fifth and is eight points clear in the top five. The Centurions are still striving for a top three berth, so a win over Belmont Lions at Galvin Park on Saturday is a must. Warriors work out a way to win By Lance Jenkinson It was all about the four premiership points for Hoppers Crossing coach Steven Kretiuk after his side’s rousing 26-point win over Werribee Districts in the Wyndham derby at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday. Kretiuk downplayed any ulterior motivation that would come from beating their main rivals in the Western Region Football League division 1. “Ever since I’ve been there, we’ve never touched on the rivalry,” Kretiuk said. “To me, I think it’s more external then internal.” Kretiuk conceded that a win in the Wyndham derby could mean more for some individual players. From a team perspective though, this result was about the big picture for Hoppers Crossing and the importance of a victory that keeps his sixth-placed side in touching distance of the top five teams. “I know some of the guys play against each other in juniors and right the way through, so as players they maybe have a bit of a rivalry,” Kretiuk said. “At the end of the day, we want to win any game we play. “Werribee is obviously a top three side and to get the points today, we’re really proud of the players.” Hoppers Crossing took control of the match with a big second quarter. The Warriors banged on 6.6 to 1.0 in the second term to open up a commanding 39-point lead at half time. A re-assessment by the Warriors coaches at quarter time led to a change in game style that proved effective. “We simplified our game a bit at the stoppages,” Kretiuk said. “We tried to handball a fair bit out of stoppages in the first quarter when there was no exits, so we told the guys to put it on the boot a bit more. “Werribee tried to roll their half forwards into the stoppages and create a few more numbers and we just couldn’t find clean exits. “Kicking more out of stoppages worked.” The reason why Hoppers Crossing’s quick transition to attack worked is because of the insatiable appetite of its small forwards. The talents of the big men compliment each other, so they can afford to have shorter bursts in the ruck and stay fresher for longer. It has been an up and down season for Hoppers Crossing so far, but it has started to hit its straps in the past three weeks with the win over Werribee Districts preceeded by a stirring

Kretiuk savoured the victory over Werribee Districts for all of an hour before turning his attention to a massive game against Spotswood at McLean Reserve on Saturday. “We enjoyed the win, but we move on,” Kretiuk said. “We’ll look at Spotty now and ‘Eamesy’ [Spotswood coach Anthony Eames] has got them firing, so it’s going to be a big ask.” Werribee Districts will face St Albans in a fourth-versus-fifth clash at Soliders Reserve next Saturday. In other division 1 games, Sunshine enjoyed a 44-point win over Point Cook, St Albans got the better of Caroline Springs by 21 points,

Deer Park thrashed Albion by 161 and Altona pipped Spotswood by a point in a thriller. In division 2, Wyndhamvale took the spoils in a 48-point win over this season’s surprise packet Point Cook Centrals. Led by three goals from Jy Lambley, the Falcons led from start to finish to preserve their spot at the top of the ladder. In division 3, Glen Orden had to dig deep to break the resolve of Braybrook in a 38-point win. Playing coach Dean Cachia booted six goals for Wyndham Suns in a 164-point hammering of North Sunshine, while Tarneit could only manage three goals in a 48-point defeat to Albanvale.

Werribee Devils continue to struggle in clutch moments

Werribee Devils have stumbled in the Big V Basketball women’s state championship. The Devils have lost three of their past four games to fall from top spot to fourth in quick time. Devils coach Reece Potter is hoping the learnings out of their form slump will hold his team in good stead once the playoffs arrive. “There’s some key learnings to take away and improve on as we go into finals,” he said. “I certainly think we have to get better in tight games. “We haven’t had many tight games this year and that showed against Hume City, where we sort of fell over in the end.” Werribee was in the box seat against Hume City Broncos on Saturday night, but fell away dramatically in the dying minutes. The Devils conceded 22-6 in the last seven minutes to make it back-to-back losses. They had led by eight at one stage in the fourth. “We were in a good spot and basically [Hume City captain] Nicole Zammit beat us one-versus-five,” Potter said. “We need to be better in those situations and

control the game and execute. “We have too many break down defensively and not disciplined and on the same page.” Werribee’s two most recent losses came without import Alisia Jenkins. Jenkins has been sidelined with a knee injury after sustaining a knock in the win over Keilor Thunder on June 30. Her absence has left a massive hole in the team as she was averaging 25 points and 13 rebounds per game. Potter will not rush his star player back. “Initially we thought it would be a pretty quick return, but the hope now is she’ll be back for finals, but it’s a wait and see approach at the moment,” he said. “We’re obviously very hopeful and she’s doing everything she can to put herself in the best spot to come back, but we’ve got to wait for the medical advice.” Jenkins’ absence has given others the chance to step up and Alexys Vaioletama was Werribee’s dominant force against Hume City. Vaioletama finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks in an impressive performance.

Bees return to the top

“That’s the sort of potential we’ve known she’s had and we’ll need that going into finals,” Potter said. “I stayed on her about being aggressive and taking open shots because she’s got all the attributes and all the skill package. “She did a really good job of coming out and being aggressive and being a great leader for us.” Foul trouble restricted Werribee’s starting point guard Sarah Elsworthy to just 20 minutes. Maxine Allan did a superb job filling in, but when Elsworthy was put back into the game late on, she could not find her rhythm. “Having Sarah in foul trouble really hurt us,” Potter said. Werribee will be hoping to halt its losing slide when it hosts winless Warrnambool Mermaids at Eagle Stadium on Saturday at 6.30pm. In men’s state championship, Werribee Devils featured in two nail-biters on a double header weekend. The Bees are back at the top of the ladder after a narrow but comfortable 1-0 win over Whittlesea Ranges on their visit to Epping Stadium on Saturday. Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini credited a real team effort for his side coming away with the full three points. “We played really well as a team,” he said. “It was really hard to give 3, 2, 1 because there were so many good players all over the park. “The defenders were superb all day and they started all our attack for us, the midfielders won their battles and controlled the game and we set the strikers up a bit narrower to counter what they did and we scored a goal from it. “It was a good all-round performance.” Werribee City went through a rough patch in the middle of the season and coughed up top spot, but the dark clouds seem to have disappeared. The turning point for the Bees was the arrival of July, when they ventured out to Bulleen on a cold Monday night. While they came home empty handed, losing the game 2-1, the Bees seemed to regain their lost touch. That has been evident in their two games since, which they have won both and taken back first place. Sabbadini believes his players will have more of a steely resolve to defend top spot this time around. “We were on top for a long time there and we sort of let it slip,” he said. “Now we’re back there, I think the players realise what’s at stake.” It was an easy day for Werribee City goalkeeper Nikola Kostandinoski against Whittlesea Ranges. The Bees back four of Nick Bavcar, Sam McCall, Shaun Hodor and Julyan Collett were nigh on impenetrable. “The keeper had to come out for a kick a few times, but no shots that he had to save,” Sabbadini said. “That’s always a good sign.” Werribee City had total control of the midfield. Captain Brad Murray, Jake Butler and Tyler James totally dictated the terms, ensuring the lion’s share of possession for their side. “If you control the midfield, you will normally win the game,” Sabbadini said. Liam Brian was the scorer of Werribee City’s tap-in winner, but Lisandro Paz was arguably the side’s best player. Paz played the final pass to the feet of Brian for his goal. Werribee is sinking in quicksand in the Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 1. The Tigers slumped to their fourth straight loss on Saturday, pipped 2-1 by Monash University on the road.
