Big leap for Ellie’s acting

Tarneit youngster Ellie says she “ran and jumped about the house” in excitement after being cast in a short film. The eight-year-old said she was thrilled to successfully audition for Monster Monster, a movie made by students at Swinburne University. In the film, Ellie portrays a girl frightened by domestic violence. One of her co-stars plays a “monster” who hides under her character’s bed. “I had to react like I was terrified and breathe heavily,” Ellie said. “It was really fun acting to be scared. “It was really exciting to be on the film set – there were cameras everywhere and tiny microphones were put on me.” Ellie, who said she hoped to become an actor, attends classes at Adam Turnbull Acting in Hoppers Crossing. At the age of four, she appeared alongside her older brother in a short film called Spill, directed by Aaron Ellis. Thefts rise in Wyndham By Alesha Capone Theft offences in Wyndham have increased by more than 12 per cent in a 12 month period, according to new figures. Statistics released by the Crime Statistics Agency last week showed that 5212 theft offences were recorded by police in the 12 months to March, up from 4641 in March, 2018. Despite the rise, the figure remains below the 10 year high recorded in 2016, when 5768

offences were recorded. Types of theft included in this category are theft of motor vehicle, theft from motor vehicle, retail and bicycle thefts and receiving and handling stolen goods. Overall crime in Wyndham rose more than five per cent. According to the figures, a total of 14,904 crimes were recorded by police in the 12 months to March – up from 14,137 in March, 2018. This is still below the 2016 high of 15,104 overall offences.

In other crime categories, family violence-related serious assaults rose 25 per cent to 325 recorded offences. Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton said Victoria Police had attended 81,000 family violence incidents in the 12 month period – an increase of 6000. “We don’t want to be attending one,” he said. “It equates to us attending one family violence incident every six minutes.” Sexual assaults in Wyndham rose six per cent to 388 recorded offences.

Residential aggravated burglaries fell to 74, according to the figures – well down on the 10 year high recorded two years ago when 157 offences occurred. Deputy Commissioner Patton said overall decreases in residential burglaries were due to offender management. “We identify through our intelligence people who we know are going to be committing these type of offences and we target them – and we make no excuses for that,” he said.

PSO call for Werribee court By Alesha Capone A Wyndham councillor has called for protective services officers to be posted at Werribee Magistrates Court every weekday, in place of police officers. Safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said that if PSOs were assigned to the court, it would free up the police to carry out other duties in Wyndham. Cr McAliney said that most courts in the Melbourne metropolitan and suburban area were manned by PSOs.

“My understanding is Werribee court is one of the only courts manned by two police officers daily, Monday to Friday, in Victoria, effectively taking 10 shifts a week off Wyndham streets where police could be patrolling and making our community safer,” she said. “My question is, why are 10 [police] shifts being allocated to the court house every week, when PSOs should be manning it?” Cr McAliney said she believed one reason behind police being assigned to the Werribee court could be that the building has not been substantially upgraded for a number of years.

She said that with only two courtrooms, and victims and perpetrators sometimes having to sit together, this could pose a “security risk”. Victoria Police is responsible for providing security to the state’s courts. “This role is performed by Protective Services Officers at city-based courts and a selection of suburban courts,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said. “As we continue to increase our PSO workforce, we expect to deploy them to more suburban and regional courts. “Currently police officers perform this role at the Werribee Magistrates Court.

“Although there is no current plan to change the current arrangements, Victoria Police is constantly reviewing resourcing.” A new justice precinct in East Werribee has been talked about for a number of years. In 2014, the state government allocated three hectares of land, directly behind Werribee police station, for a potential justice precinct. Earlier this year, Wyndham council made a pre-budget submission to the state government’s 2019-20 budget, asking for funding to be allocated to develop the justice precinct.

A woman and her pet husky were attacked by a dog in Hoppers Crossing last week. Lauren Nunn and her husky Lola were walking along Sycamore Street on June 17 when a dog ran from the driveway of a property towards them. CCTV footage shown on Channel 7 shows Ms Nunn lifting Lola up to keep her out of harm’s way. The footage shows the other dog appear to bite Ms Nunn about five times. A witness told Star Weekly that residents from nearby houses heard screams and came running to assist Ms Nunn. Shortly after the attack a car arrived at the house where the dog had come from. Someone put the dog into the car and drove away. An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics treated Ms Nunn for a hand injury about 5.30pm. She was taken to Werribee Mercy Hospital in a stable condition. Wyndham council’s manager of corporate affairs, Emily Keogh, said the incident was being investigated. “A current priority for council is understanding where the offending animal is located as the overriding concern is ensuring public safety,” she said. “Wyndham City Council treats dog attacks extremely seriously and has a strong track record in managing these difficult situations.”

Nursery cafe bears fruit A Werribee garden nursery that has been operating for 47 years is giving customers a taste of something new â€“ an on-site cafĂŠ that takes natural ingredients from pot to plate. The Garden Feastâ€™s tasty new direction is the brainchild of owner Maree Planner. Her parents, John and Lyn, started the business, then known as Grevillea Nursery, in 1972. Mrs Planner studied horticulture at university and started working full-time at the nursery in 1991. She said the idea of opening a cafĂŠ came when she realised fewer young people were coming to the nursery. The plan seems to be paying off in spades. Mrs Planner said that during the cafĂŠâ€™s

opening weekend, they ran out of food after serving about 600 people in two days. Maddie’s house of hope By Alesha Capone It’s a house with a lot of hope invested into it. Number 12 Joyce Street, Point Cook – built by Fairhaven Homes and a group of tradespeople and suppliers – will be auctioned next month to raise funds for Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision. The charity, which raises money for research into Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes, is named in honour of Maddie Riewoldt, who died at age 26 of the illness.

Maddie’s brothers include Alex Riewoldt and former St Kilda AFL player Nick Riewoldt, who is now chair of the charity’s board. Nick said that he and Alex were “absolutely thrilled and very grateful” to everyone involved in putting the auction together, including Fairhaven Homes and land developer Satterley. “The funds that we will be able to generate from the sale of this amazing home will help significantly,” Nick said. Fairhaven Homes’ sales and marketing general manager Jake Munday said the idea of a

charity house was first discussed six years ago. Number 12 Joyce Street is a four-bedroom, fully-furnished house and land package in Satterley’s Upper Point Cook estate. Three men have been caught at Newport boat ramp with 36 undersize snapper. The three Hoppers Crossing men, aged 19, 30 and 46, were stopped by Victorian Fisheries Authority officers after they retrieved their boat on Tuesday night last week. Officers searched their vehicle and found a bucket containing 36 snapper, 27 of which were well undersize. The smallest measured only 19.9 centimetres – the legal minimum is 28 centimetres. The bag limit is 10, of which no more than three fish may be 40 centimetres or more in length. Another snapper was found behind the boat’s fuel tank. Crash drives ‘death trap’ fears By Alesha Capone Tarneit residents are calling for an intersection to be upgraded after a fatal collision earlier this month. On June 16, two vehicles collided near the intersection of Boundary and Davis roads. The occupants of one of the vehicles, a male driver aged 40 and three female passengers aged 71, 37 and five, were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, but the 71-year-old woman later died in hospital. The driver of the second car, a 68-year-old man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

After Star Weekly posted news of the collision on social media, several people responded to the article. Bronwyn said she was in her front yard when the collision occurred and she heard sirens as emergency vehicles arrived. “That intersection needs a stop sign on the Wyndham side or a small roundabout – just

something ’till the area is developed,” she said on Facebook. “Every few weeks a horrific crash happens”. Another resident, Jody, wrote that some drivers didn’t obey the existing road signs at the intersection. “I live up on the next intersection on Boundary Road,” she said. “The number of people I see drive through these intersections – above the speed limit without even looking – is a daily occurrence, to the point I drive the Dowlings Road goat track up to the bypass to get to and from work out the back of Laverton.”

Angela wrote that both Boundary and Tarneit roads were in danger of becoming the area’s “next death traps”, while Sue commented: “Very sad that people die on these roads so often, yet no extra care is taken by drivers and the roads are not being upgraded.” Star Weekly asked Wyndham council if it was planning to upgrade the intersection. Economy, innovation and liveability acting director Steve Bentley, said: “It would be inappropriate to comment … prior to receiving the coroner’s report, however Wyndham City regularly audits roads and intersections for safety and this intersection is part of that.”

To Harrison, with love Erica Vandy says that meeting an author when she was at primary school inspired her own writing. The Werribee woman said a school visit by Bruce Whatley, author of The Ugliest Dog in the World, was a pivotal moment in her life. “He signed my book and I thought, ‘I’d like to write a book in the future and be an author’,” she said. Mrs Vandy recently published her first book, The Raggle Rug Rug, about a little girl who is scared to move into a new house with her parents, but finds the perfect rug to protect her at night. Mrs Vandy said the story idea came out of the bedtime stories she would make up for her six-year-old son Harrison. “Telling him the story at night and realising it made him happy, and seeing it come to life as a book, was really good,” she said. Mrs Vandy is a classroom teacher and

literacy intervention coach at Derrimut Heath Primary School, which is part of Baden Powell College, and a vision therapist at Eyecare Plus Optometrists in Altona. She said her work with children who have developed eye problems because of the amount of time they spend on phones and computers motivated her to encourage a love of reading books in young people. “And I hope I can inspire children, like the author did for me when I was young,” she said. Card misuse leads to sacking By Alesha Capone A Wyndham council employee was sacked for misusing a fuel card and purchasing more than $1000 in car wash vouchers, a report has revealed. The termination was highlighted in a Victorian Auditor-General’s Office report into expenditure and processes involving senior council staff and councillors from four municipalities. The office conducted an audit of Wyndham, Shepparton, Strathbogie and Wellington

councils for the period between July, 2015, to July last year, but extended the testing period to February this year after some “anomalies” were detected. While the audit did not find any fraud or corruption, it did identify some cases of expenditure where it was unclear how residents and ratepayers benefited; practices that might not meet public expectations; and non-compliance with legislative requirements. The report found that between February 27 and November 30 last year, Wyndham council’s vehicle fleet co-ordinator identified

a council employee who made 17 separate one-litre oil purchases using the same fuel card, totalling $303.49. According to the vehicle’s odometer reading, the vehicle should not have required any oil. The fleet co-ordinator also identified that the same employee purchased car wash vouchers totalling $1074.15 between January 21, 2015, and November 3 last year without entering a car wash. The council was able to establish these instances by using GPS tracking. After an internal investigation, the council terminated the staff member’s employment for

misconduct. In a separate finding, the report noted that the council’s chief executive officer approved their own expenses, on a council-issued credit card. However the report noted that in 2017, the council stopped the practice of the chief executive approving their own transactions. The council’s chief executive Kelly Grigsby said that Wyndham was “pleased to be selected to take part in the VAGO audit”. “It is extremely reassuring that there was no evidence of fraud or corruption found within the organisation,” she said.

Before she became a Clubbercise instructor, Mrs Preedy taught bootcamps and personal training sessions in the Tarneit area. “One day my mother, who still lives in Britain, rang me and said ‘You have to see if this (Clubbercise) is in Australia – it’s right up your alley’,” she said. Mrs Preedy went on to complete a Clubbercise instructor course in Yarraville in 2017.

She said the “fun and fitness” Clubbercise classes consisted of easy cardio workouts, suitable for people aged 13 and over. But Mrs Preedy said the majority of her clients were women aged from 35 through to their 60s. “They’re often lively and vibrant kind of people, who remember the ’90s-style music and say, ‘I used to listen to that when I went out clubbing’,” she said. Justice report backs education By Alesha Capone A new report into education offered at the Parkville and Malmsbury youth justice precincts could assist in planning for the Cherry Creek youth justice facility, researchers say. Work on the Victoria University-led study, which was funded by the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation, began in 2016. The completed report was released last week. Victoria University’s Dr Alison Baker said that although much of the planning for the

Cherry Creek facility being built near Werribee has been completed – with the centre due to open in 2021 – the report’s findings could be “transferrable” to Cherry Creek. For example, the findings included that learning time is often “wasted” because security concerns override those of education. The study stated classes were often put together based on potential for the least amount of conflict between students, rather than educational needs. The report also stated, that with far more boys and men in custody than girls and

women, the women at Parkville were prevented from accessing hospitality, engineering and woodworking learning areas as the girls were not permitted to go past the boys’ units as this could “causes distractions and creates security issues”. But the report stated the Cherry Creek

facility would hopefully address this issue, as it would offer “improved” learning opportunities for young women including expanded space for programs; the ability to transition to lower‐ security units; and a mother‐and‐baby unit. Dr Baker said that many young people who participated in the study wanted to spend their time in custody engaged in education. “A lot of young people said, ‘I really want to achieve something while I’m in here’,” she said. “We want to use it [education] as a chance to foster hope and as a ‘circuit breaker’, as we say in the report.”

Win for Little Athletics Athletes and officials at the Werribee Little Athletics Centre will be able to communicate more effectively thanks to a grant from Coles. The centre has received $1100 from the Coles Little Athletics Community Fund, to buy equipment. Money for the community fund was raised through the sale of chiller bags, designed by eight-year-old Lachie Macdonald from Victoria and 11-year-old Charlie De Bruyn from Western Australia, at Coles stores. The Werribee Little Athletics Centre is one of more than 200 centres across the nation to receive a grant from the fund. Coles state general manager Mark O’Connor said that the Werribee Little Athletics Centre applied for funding to buy a portable PA system and microphones. Werribee Little Athletics’ president Rob de Wit said the equipment would make “a big difference” to the centre.

Anu honours Aretha A famous indigenous Australian singer will bring the songs of Aretha Franklin to Werribee later this year. Christine Anu will pay tribute to the late Queen of Soul in REWIND – The Aretha Franklin Songbook. She will be joined on stage by the Western Region Concert Band and SingWest. During the show, Anu will sing some of Aretha’s most famous hits, including (Y (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Angel and Today I Sing The Blues Anu will also perform songs from her own back catalogue of hits, including My Island Home and Sunshine On A Rainy Day.

Bids out for Wyndham police hub By Alesha Capone Tenders to build the $45 million Wyndham Police Complex, which is set to become one of the largest Victoria Police facilities outside the Melbourne CBD, will close at the end of this month. hub that is capable of servicing the growing community,” the spokesperson said. “The Wyndham Police Complex will be occupied by both general duties and specialist units, including the area’s command, family violence team, Divisional Response Unit, Proactive Policing Unit, Youth Tasking and support staff. “Wyndham police will have access to improved and larger training and conference areas, extra storage space, fitness areas and secure accommodation. “The new design will also allow for improved

forensic examination capabilities and emergency management response within the policing hub. “The complex will also have the capacity to accommodate additional operational vehicles.” Wyndham police Inspector Marty Allison said the new complex would accommodate about 500 police. “We’re building for the future and that’s very exciting,” he said. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said: “This new station will ensure Wyndham has a state-of-the art policing hub.”

Daniher inspires a fight Werribee Football Club has raised thousands of dollars for a cause close to its heart, and the heart of a famous former player. Former Essendon player and AFL coach, Neale Daniher, was a member of Werribee FC’s 1991 grand final team. In 2013, Mr Daniher was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND). He went on to co-found the not-for-profit FightMND organisation and is a well-known campaigner for research into the illness. Earlier this month, Mr Daniher paid a visit to the Werribee players before a match at the Avalon Airport Oval. When they ran onto the field later on, the Werribee players wore socks emblazoned with “Fight MND”. The club also sold Big Freeze 5 beanies, named in honour of the annual fundraising ‘Big Freeze’ at the MCG, on the day. Werribee FC chief executive Mark Penaluna

said selling the beanies helped to raise more than $4000 for FightMND. “We have purchased beanies and provided financial support to MND previously – however, in 2019 we managed this in a much more co-ordinated and productive fashion,” Mr Penaluna said. “Neale attended our pre-game event and spoke to WFC players and coaches – I know that all of those who he did speak to were incredibly impressed.” Mr Penaluna said that WFC’s past players, in particular Michael McMaster, officials and others also supported the MND cause via the Daniher drive and other initiatives. Flu vaccine supply under strain By Goya Dmytryshchak and Benjamin Millar Vaccines are running out in some parts of Melbourne’s west as the number of Victorians diagnosed with the flu tops 18,600 – nine times more than at the same time last year. Altona North doctor Mukesh Haikerwal said it had been “a massive” year for flu. “We’ve vaccinated around 3000 people in our practice alone,” he said. “It’s been very, very full-on for all of our staff.”

Dr Haikerwal said that following an advertising campaign by state and federal governments, his clinic had faced vaccine supply issues. “We still have pockets of lack of supply, especially for private flu vaccines, which we

have to beg, borrow or steal to get [for] people who are wanting to be immunised,” he said. “We were running immunising clinics for 200 or 300 in a day, and then not having enough for the next clinic, so having to wait for more stock before booking more clinics.” The former World Medical Association chairman and former Australian Medical Association president said supply had improved, but stocks were running low at what was the height of vaccinating season. More than 30 people, including three

children, have died in Victoria from the flu this year, Health Minister Jenny Mikakos confirmed this month. A Western Health spokesman said there had been a noticeable increase in hospital admissions for people suffering flu-like symptoms since the start of June. He said the rise was being experienced across all age categories, but particularly among children. The situation could further worsen in coming months, as flu cases typically peaked in September.

Quite a ghostly history Point Cook Homestead is a well-known historical site – but is also thought to be one of the most haunted properties in the western suburbs. Lantern Ghost Tours conducts tours at the heritage-listed homestead on the third Saturday of every month. This month, Star Weekly joined a tour by “ghost guide”, Ken, a veteran, having conducted more than 200 tours. He starts out by joking he is not a psychic or out-of-work actor, but is intrigued by the history of the homestead, which was built by brothers Andrew and Thomas Chirnside between 1852 and 1857. We visit the homestead’s stables, where racehorse Newminster was allegedly poisoned just before the 1876 Melbourne Cup. Blame fell upon a young groom, Tommy, who was reported to have been seen shaking hands with a bookkeeper days before the race. Sadly, Tommy was later found hanging in the stables.

Later on, World War I flying ace Sydney Dalrymple purchased the homestead, which his young nephew, Maxwell, would often visit. It is believed Maxwell’s spirit haunts a bedroom at the homestead. Ken said the homestead’s former gamekeeper was also thought to haunt the property – and could possibly be the stern-looking man in an apron seen by some tour guests. Ken said that he had seen a man in an old-fashioned waistcoat and boots walk behind an oak tree at the homestead and not re-appear, and a lady in Victorian clothing silhouetted in the homestead’s windows. More jail time for convicted thief By Alesha Capone A woman who stole more than $460,000 from her employers to fund her gambling habit has had her sentence increased by the Court of Appeal. In November last year, Kerry Caulfield pleaded guilty in the County Court to a “rolled-up” charge of theft after stealing $463,028.80 from her former employer, the Hopper Motor Group, based in Werribee, Essendon and Melbourne.

The “rolled-up” charge consisted of 84 separate acts of theft, which took place across a three-year period. In December, Caulfield was sentenced to nine months imprisonment, a two-year Community Correction Order and 50 hours of unpaid community work. However, the Director of Public Prosecutions appealed the sentence on the grounds that it was “manifestly inadequate”. The Court of Appeal earlier this month increased Caulfield’s sentence to two years and

six months imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 18 months. The court heard that Caulfield, aged between 45 and 48 at the time of her offending, was “essentially a bookkeeper” at the Hopper Motor Group. Caulfield’s theft was discovered when the business appointed a new chief financial officer last year and later engaged an accounting and advisory firm. The court heard Caulfield admitted to police that she had manipulated the company’s

books to cover up her thefts, and that about 90 per cent of the money she stole went towards gambling. One of the owners of the Hopper Motor Group read a victim impact statement in court. She said the thefts from the business had made her “physically ill” and put the company “seriously at risk”. The court also heard that Caulfield, who has no prior criminal history, “was deeply sorry for her actions”.

Plant goes with the flow A new water recycling plant in Werribee is providing Melbourne with an extra 140 megalitres of water per day – the equivalent of 56 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Construction recently finished on the $150 million nutrient removal plant (also known as a water recycling plant) at Melbourne Water’s Western Treatment Plant. Western Treatment Plant manager Martin Bowles said although the site already has two nutrient removal plants, the new one is more energy efficient. “The nutrient removal plant has been designed to minimise the carbon and energy consumed in treatment, enabling the Western Treatment Plant to continue to maximise renewable energy generation into the future,” Mr Bowles said. “This project is an outstanding example of cutting-edge technology and design which will benefit both the community and the environment, helping to mitigate the energy

use required to deliver safe water, remove and treat sewage, and manage the drainage and waterways across Melbourne.” The new nutrient removal plant consists of four large tanks. The water it treats will be used to water parks and sports ovals, and to irrigate land and crops. Mr Bowles said the new plant would help Melbourne Water meet the needs of the city’s expanding population. Alesha Capone

Music left in old guitars By Goya Dmytryshchak A new charity that repairs old guitars is bringing smiles to children’s faces. Guitars Gathering Dust collects unwanted guitars and, with the help of the Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed, repairs and spruces them up before handing them on to children-based music charities. The first batch of 30 guitars on Tuesday was donated to national not-for-profit organisation The Song Room for the Jennings Street School in Laverton, a prep-year 12 school for children

on the autism spectrum. Guitars Gathering Dust was founded by Williamstown’s Craig Watt. “There’s so many old guitars that are probably just lying under the bed or in a garage just gathering dust, so we’re trying to create an awareness campaign,” Mr Watt said. “The Song Room provides a dedicated music resource to the Jennings Street School so we know that the guitars will be well used.” Mr Watt said some of the guitars might need a new neck or bridge – that was where the Men’s Shed came in.

“A lot of times, these instruments end up in hard rubbish collection because people think they’re too damaged and beat up to be of any use … “It’s amazing what you can do with a little bit of knowledge and TLC. “Hopefully we’ll be able to work with The Song Room and the national body of the Men’s Shed to roll out this initiative a little broader.” A number of music stores have jumped on board, helping by donating strings and acting as drop-off points. Melbourne’s boom in new home builds is being blamed for a reported spike in the number of termites across the city. The pesky pests are said to have been eating more homes as their natural habitats are cleared for a three-bedder with tasty flooring or walls. Building inspectors have reported termites have been particularly active in Footscray, Laverton, Werribee, Williamstown, Carrum Downs, Cranbourne, Pakenham and Frankston. The University of Sydney’s Professor Nathan Lo, from the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, said it was possible more termites were moving into suburban areas, particularly those areas close to cleared forests. Many homes might have been affected by termites a few years ago, with signs they were there only apparent now, he said. Jim’s Building Inspections director Paul Commerford said inspectors had reported a 25 per cent increase in the number of homes showing evidence of termite activity. Buyers and home owners should watch out for the potential warning signs of termites which include: • Any rotting or damp timber on the property; • Hollow sounds or discrepancy in sounds when knocking on timber walls; • Dampness underneath the house; • Old tree stumps in a backyard that show signs of termite activity. Refugee scholar boost Wyndham Park Community Centre has launched a scholarship named in honour of dedicated community volunteer Maggie McInnes. Ms McInnes is a founding member of the centre and its committee of management, in addition to being involved with several other local groups. The scholarship will provide a Wyndham student from a current-generation refugee family with $3000 to assist them in a career or studies in artistic-based information technology such as computer-generated animation, computer graphics, photography or set design or a similar discipline. to recognise Ms McInnes’ “long-standing involvement in community activities”. Threats by a union, including “blackballing,” are stated to have been the reason for Werribee Shire Council outside staff participating in their first-ever strike last week. Three-quarters of staff voted to remain at work last Thursday when a stoppage was called over the West Australian unionists arrest affair.

Plans to close down the $40 million Animal Research Institute in Werribee have been shelved by the state government until a review of its agricultural research is completed in December. The backdown statement was made by the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Barry Rowe, on Monday, a week after the shock announcement to close down the institute.

Plans for a residential development near Sanctuary Close, Werribee, were approved last week by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). The Urban Land Corporation’s (ULC) original 78 lot plan was reduced to 62 lots following objections from residents and further reduced to 55 lots before being given the go-ahead by VCAT.

An Avenue of Honour could line about four kilometres of Point Cook Road to remember servicemen and women who lived and trained in the area, if the community supports the proposal. The proposal would involve trees being planted along Point Cook Road, and when large enough, forming a canopy from Skeleton Creek to the RAAF base.

Theo’s has all your sweet Greek dreams covered at great prices. Parking is no problem. And it’s simply a cool place to be. We suspect most customers treat it as a shop, taking their goodies home. But for eating-in purposes, the place is set up in simple cafe style. Theo’s is very much about the sweeter side of life, but there are limited savoury options available. We love our slices of spanakopita ($6). Rich and flavoursome in a home-style way, they eat bigger than they look. And at a place in which we would’ve been unsurprised about being presented with plastic plates and implements, we are very happy to have our lunch accompanied by real-deal unplastic gear, along with water. For dessert, Bennie opts for a profiterol creation ($5). He enjoys it, but perhaps not as much as he’d been hoping – likely because the chocolate is not the dark, more bitter kind he likes these days. He plainly envies my politiko ($5). And in that he’s right on the money – as this is superb. It’s bit like a heftier Greek version of tiramisu, the base of syrupy semolina cake topped by a layer of cream and plenty of powdered coffee. It is wonderful – and so healthy, too!

I don’t think reforms to negative gearing would have made that much difference to the housing market.” Instead, he said the local government level was the best opportunity to address the cost of housing in Australia. “It’s the planning rules that make it really hard to build housing where people want to live,” he said. Talking about a national housing strategy was giving governments an “out”, whereas the levers for the supply side were at the state and local levels. His comments follow an increased national focus on housing affordability in recent years as eye-watering prices in Australia’s largest cities have left many potential home buyers

locked out. The recently re-elected Coalition government appointed Michael Sukkar as Minister for Housing, following a campaign in which the opposition’s policies on negative gearing and capital gains tax were a hot issue. Mr Sukkar made headlines in 2017 at the height of the property boom by telling young Australians they needed a “highly paid job” to buy a house. The Greens also proposed a national standard for renters’ rights, an issue which is currently addressed at state level. Even so, one panellist warned that other levels of government needed to step up. “Every level of government and every sector has to do their bit,” Victoria’s Residential Tenancies Commissioner Heather Holst said, adding that this would work better with co-ordination between them. “Local government probably proportionately in many cases does more than its counterparts, because it’s so proximate to the problem.” Social housing was one example of an issue in focus for different levels of government, Council to Homeless Persons chief executive and Homelessness Australia chair Jenny Smith said. “There’s a bit of a ping-pong between local government not feeling empowered to require social housing or affordable housing as part of developments and wanting leadership from state government,” she said. “And state government saying, ‘We can’t really do that, it needs to happen at the local level’. “That’s the only way we’re going to keep [from] slipping further behind.” (iStock)

Local governments are better placed to help solve the housing crisis than the federal government, a key expert says. Changing planning strategies to build more new homes in sought-after areas of major cities would have a bigger impact on affordability than introducing a national housing strategy, according to Grattan Institute fellow Brendan Coates. “[The federal government] can provide funding for social housing, and it can fix aspects of the tax system,” he told a recent Melbourne panel discussion, ‘How governments can help struggling Australians with rising housing costs.’

Tigers accelerate in second half to cruise to an easy win Werribee Districts had a runaway 60-point win over Sunshine at Kinder Smith Reserve on Saturday to move within percentage of top spot in the Western Region Football League division 1. On the back of a three-game winning streak, the Tigers have joined Altona and Spotswood at the top of the ladder with a 7-2 record. However, the Tigers’ inferior percentage has kept them in third spot. The Tigers are undefeated in five games on the road this season, including memorable wins over Altona, St Albans and Spotswood. Werribee Districts gradually pulled away from Sunshine and turned an early competitive game into a one-sided second half. Trent Lee, who claimed best-on-ground honours, Cameron Lee and Oscar Junker kicked three goals apiece, while Connor Thar and Chris Molivas chimed in with two each. If form continues, Werribee Districts could get a chance to have a significant percentage

booster when it visits bottom-of-the-ladder Albion on Saturday. Hoppers Crossing did just that against Albion at J.R. Parsons Reserve last Saturday evening. The Warriors ran out 119-point winners against the struggling Cats. Brenton Payne was in red-hot form for the Warriors with nine goals. The win propels Hoppers Crossing into the top five percentage. The top six teams are now separated by just one win with the top three on seven wins and the next three on six. Point Cook could only dream of being one of those six teams as the newly promoted Bulldogs are still finding their feet at the level. They received another lesson, going down to six-time defending premiers Deer Park by 126 points at Saltwater Reserve. In division 2, Point Cook Centrals were out-classed by 42 points by Yarraville Seddon at Featherbrook Reserve.

The signs were good for the Sharks early as they took a 13-point lead into quarter-time, but the Eagles took over thereafter. Manor Lakes took the extraordinary step of forfeiting its seniors and reserves games against Wyndhamvale. The Storm will officially decide this week whether it will keep those sides in the competition for the remainder of the season. In division 3, Glen Orden went down for the first time this season, losing by 50 points to Albanvale. The Hawks eight-game winning streak came to an abrupt halt on a day when they only managed to kick five goals. Tarneit blew past Laverton by 81 points at Laverton Park Reserve on the back of six goals to spearhead John Zangari. Wyndham Suns suffered a 74-point defeat away to Braybrook at Pennell Reserve. Jets spurred on by loss By Lance Jenkinson Point Cook has won six of its past seven matches in the Football Victoria women’s state league 4 west soccer, but it is that one defeat that sticks out like a sore thumb. The Jets’ 3-0 loss to second-placed Kyneton District way back on May 26 could prove to be problematic or beneficial in the long run – depending on how the season shakes out. There was no denying that Kyneton was the better side on the day, but are they the better team overall? Point Cook is stuck in third place, despite having a +40 goal difference over Kyneton. That May game is what separates the two sides on the ladder. If Point Cook does go on to reclaim second spot and earn promotion, it might look back on that loss as an important turning point. The Jets probably needed that sort of wake-up call to come early in the season. Since then, Point Cook has produced some outrageous scorelines in its wins, annihilating Maribyrnong Swifts Lightning 20-0, beating Castlemaine Goldfields 4-0 and slaughtering Barnstoneworth United 11-0 in their last start. Jets coach Graham Moran is hoping his team will learn from that losing experience against Kyneton and take it into their remaining games, including this Sunday’s blockbuster against top-of-the-ladder side Avondale, which is undefeated, at Saltwater Reserve. “Kyneton wanted it more than we did and we paid the price,” Moran said. “It could be an expensive loss for us in the long run because two teams are going to get promoted and now our whole season could pin on the away game against Kyneton. “After a bit of a razz at training in that week, the girls turned up to play the following week and put 20 past Maribyrnong. They’ve played much better since.” Point Cook is eager to get promoted as quickly as possible. The Jets have some quality junior players coming through the ranks and cannot afford to be languishing in the lower reaches of the state leagues. “We’ve got a good female program at Point Cook” Moran said. “As the senior coach, I’ve been down to watch all the different age groups. “A couple of my senior girls came down to help me out and coach the under-10s team and they were a great little bunch of players. “If we can retain all of that talent within the club, then female football, which is the biggest growth area for us – this is going to continue to grow.” Aside from that blemish against Kyneton,

Werribee City has somehow managed to keep hold of top spot in the National Premier League 2 west soccer after three rounds without a win. The Bees have lost their sting recently, picking up one point from a possible nine. A 1-0 loss on home soil to Brunswick City at Galvin Park on Saturday added to the frustration of Werribee City fans. For all the slip-ups, no rival club has taken top spot away from the Bees. But the ladder is a little too condensed for any of the promotion-chasing sides to feel comfortable, with the top five separated by three points. With one win in five games, Werribee City will be desperate to claim all three points when it squares off with eastern conference promotion contenders Bulleen Lions at the Veneto Club in Bulleen on Monday night. In state leagues, Hoppers Crossing grabbed top spot in state league 2 north-west with a 4-0 mauling of Hume United on the road. Jason Hayne, Alister Smart, Liam McDermott and the recently acquired Takuya Yoshimi found the back of the net for the Reds. The Reds will host Moreland United in a tricky game at Grange Reserve on Saturday. Point Cook was pipped 2-1 on the road by Upfield in state league 3 north-west. The Jets remain second last on the ladder. Truganina broke its three-game losing streak in state league 4 north-west with a 3-2 win over Gisborne at Arndell Park Reserve. Werribee club teen takes aim at world championships

It’ll be a big couple of months for Plumpton shooter Thomas Armstrong. The 19-year-old will compete at a third straight Universal Trench World Championships in August, but before that he will represent Australia at the ISSF shotgun World Championships for the first time and compete in the ISSF Junior World Cup. Armstrong said the schedule would be a challenge, with the different competitions requiring him to shoot in different disciplines. But he was looking forward to it. The two disciplines have different speeds and distances of targets. Armstrong will compete in the ISSF Shotgun World Championships in Lonato Italy starting this week, before heading to Germany for the ISSF Junior World Cup. These two events will see him shoot in an Olympic discipline, something Armstrong has

only just decided to focus on. “It’s a completely different discipline and I thought it would take me a few years to start making Australian teams. “I did a few competitions, competing with the best [in Australia]. It has come as a surprise.” Armstrong said his instant success had given him confidence that he could make the transition into this discipline. He will try and make the Australian Olympic team later this year. “It’s a good stepping stone and I’m already competing at a high level. “It’s a good lead-up to the Olympic trials … I’ll see how I go.” After competing in Italy and Germany, Armstrong will compete at the Universal Trench World Championships in France. at the same event, while he’s also won team gold there. “It’s pretty exciting,” he said. “We won gold in the teams last year, but I didn’t go so well in the individual event. “I’m hungry for it and I know what I have to shoot. I’m feeling confident and have been practicing a lot, it’s whether I can put it all together.” Armstrong, a member of the Werribee Victorian Clay Target Shooting Club, said for now he would continue to shoot both disciplines, depending on schedules and competition dates. By Lance Jenkinson Truganina is setting the pace in what is shaping up to be one of the tightest NRL Victoria first-grade premiership races in years. The Rabbitohs had the luxury of the bye last weekend and watched on as the rest of the teams battered one another. The Phil Pese-coached Rabbitohs went into the break safe in the knowledge that their spot at the top of the ladder could not be compromised. “I can’t be disappointed with how the team is going at the moment,” Pese said. “We’ve still got things to work on, but … we’re getting a feel for the other teams. “The second round of games, we’ll try to cement some combinations and some set players moving into the back end of the season.” Truganina has built its identity in the first half of the season on its hard-nosed defence. The Rabbitohs clearly have the toughest defence to penetrate, conceding on average just 13.55 points a game. For Pese, that sort of defence was a non-negotiable when he arrived at Truganina in the pre-season. When it comes down to big games, the team with the best defence usually wins, as evidenced by the scorelines of recent grand finals. Pese’s former club, the Werribee Bears, have won each of the past three grand finals by scoring 20 points or less. Pese is pleased with how the Rabbitohs have applied themselves defensively. “It comes down to the players’ attitudes,” he said. “I really wanted to enforce defence this year and we did a lot of work on it in the pre-season. “When it comes to close games at the end of the season, defence is going to win you championships and everyone knows that. “If we educate the players correctly, we can get them into a good mindset defensively.” That is not to say that Truganina is the finished article when it comes to defending. Pese pointed out the points conceded in a 62-16 win over newly promoted Melton Broncos last start as an indication that work still needed to be done. “Even though our defensive record is good, there’s a lot we need to work on,” he said. “There’s been a couple of games where teams have scored points where we should’ve shut them out.” Truganina seems to have struck the right balance between attack and defence. The Rabbitohs are also ranked No.1 in points for, averaging 40.88 a game. Pese promotes an unpredictable style of play, which gives all players equal opportunity when it comes to scoring tries. “One of the things we wanted to work on was making sure everyone is available in attack and get everyone pro-active,” he said. “The more players we get across the line 52 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 26, 2019

Werribee is starting to lose touch with the finals contenders in Hockey Victoria women’s Vic League 1. While there have been a number of heartbreaking near misses along the way, the Tigers have not won a game since way back in round three and it is starting to show in the standings. Werribee went down 4-2 away to Mornington Peninsula on Saturday. Goals from Holly Stewart and Taia Leenstra were mere consolations for the Tigers.
