Green gong for teacher

Werribee Primary School teacher Jo Wembridge has been recognised as an outstanding environmental educator and sustainability leader. Mrs Wembridge has been selected as one of three finalists for the Primary School Teacher of the Year award, in the annual ResourceSmart School Awards. The other finalists are Vanessa Smith from Truganina South Primary School and Glenn Jepson from Kunyung Primary School in Mount Eliza. For the past eight years, Mrs Wembridge has been heavily involved in ResourceSmart Schools, a program offered by Sustainability Victoria. Since 2012, Werribee Primary School has saved more than $66,700 thanks to several environmental initiatives which Mrs Wembridge has helped to introduce, including a zero waste policy. Under Mrs Wembridge’s leadership, the school was also named the first five-star ResourceSmart school in the western metropolitan region. Mrs Wembridge said she was thrilled when a colleague nominated her for the ResourceSmart School Award. “It was just nice to be recognised because you just do your job and do it for the kids, it’s just nice to think somebody else appreciates what you are doing,” she said. Parking fines upheld By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has withdrawn just over 2 per cent of parking fines it issued across a 12-month period. Between May 10 last year and May 10 this year, council officers wrote out a total of 29,173 parking infringements. Wyndham’s city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the council had reviewed 4637 of these fines at the request of motorists, and as a result withdrew 596 of the infringements (2.04 per cent of the total fines issued during the 12-month timeframe).

“The main reason council withdraws infringements is because of exceptional circumstances,” Mr Thorpe said. “Other grounds for the waiving of parking fines are special circumstances, as defined under the Infringements Act 2006, mistaken identity and contrary to law.” ‘Exceptional circumstances’ means the person issued with an infringement has a valid reason to excuse the infringement. Under the Infringements Act, ‘special circumstances’ can apply to a person with a mental or intellectual disability, disorder, disease or illness; who is homeless; or who has a

serious addiction to drugs, alcohol or a volatile substance, resulting in them being unable to understand what conduct constitutes an offence, or to control conduct which constitutes an offence. It also includes people subjected to family violence, who are unable to control conduct which constitutes an offence. Mr Thorpe said the main reasons parking infringements were issued were for overstaying the time permitted (7083 fines), parking on a nature strip (6449 fines) and stopping in a no stopping zone (4076 fines). Vehicles stopped in a loading zone attracted

2156 fines and vehicles parked outside a parking bay attracted 1038 fines. Earlier this month, the council endorsed a new enforcement policy, to guide its officers in their enforcement decisions. Wyndham’s safer communities portfolio holder Cr Kim McAliney said the policy covered parking, litter, animal control, town planning, building and food businesses regulation. “Council has legal responsibilities and obligations to ensure there is compliance with our local laws, and our community has a responsibility to comply,” Cr McAliney said.

Level crossing budget win By Esther Lauaki The long-awaited removal of the level crossing at Old Geelong Road in Hoppers Crossing has been funded in the state budget. The state government has allocated a further $6.6 billion, as part of its 2019-20 budget released this week, to remove 25 more crossings across the state by 2025. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said, when plans for the crossing’s removal were first made late last year, that there had been three serious accidents since 2005 and 20 near-misses at the

Old Geelong Road level crossing. About 18,000 vehicles travel through the level crossing each day. “What is clear is that this crossing meets this criteria, certainly in terms of safety, efficiency and community connectedness,” he said. Wyndham’s budget wins also included: • A share of $214 million for seven early parenting centres across the state, including one in Wyndham; • $12.3 billion towards the Suburban Rail Loop, a 90-kilometre rail line circling Melbourne’s suburbs with 12 new underground stations

that connect every major rail line from the Werribee line to the Frankston line; • A share of $1.4 million to continue Victoria Police youth outreach in Werribee, under which police officers and youth workers are paired to provide support and referral for vulnerable young people; • A share of $5 million to develop the next generation of sports stars, with seven high-performance basketball hubs to include a new “hub” in Werribee; • $150 million to upgrade 11,000 carparks at train stations across the state in the next four

years, including at Aircraft station; and • $2 million towards construction and expansion of 10 community hospitals across the state, including the new Point Cook Community Hospital. Altona MP Jill Hennessy said the government was delivering on its promises with major investments in education, healthcare and transport. “This is the first step in delivering the Point Cook Community Hospital, which will give local families confidence that the very best care is just around the corner,” Ms Hennessy said.

Tarneit’s Tantaro family is organising a carnival for later this year to raise money for their three sons, who all have the genetic condition Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Brothers, seven-year-old Jakob and five-year-old Lukas, and their cousin, Anthony, 10, were born with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a hereditary condition that causes muscle wastage, breathing difficulties and heart problems. Three children were among the 26 people who have died from the flu in Victoria so far this year and the number of influenza cases across the state is already nearing the total number recorded last season. The children were aged three, six and 11 years old. The other 23 people who have died were aged-care residents in nursing homes. The World Health Organisation has warned that the number of flu cases in Australia was the highest in 20 years. Department of Health and Human Services deputy chief health officer Angie Bone said the real figure was likely to be much higher. “It is certainly an unusual flu season – it started much earlier than we would have expected,” Dr Bone said. There were no known deaths at the same time last year and just one by late May in the horror 2017 flu season. “It’s difficult to know for certain how to interpret that,” Dr Bone said. She noted the sickness might taper off over winter. Flu vaccination is free for children aged six months to five years. Pregnant women, Victorians aged above 65, indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people and those with a chronic condition are also eligible for free shots. The most recent weekly flu report from the health department said there had been 1.53 million flu shots given out in Victoria as at May 10, excluding those bought privately, such as in chemists or through workplace vaccination programs.

Two Hoppers Crossing brothers are taking their support for grassroots sports up a notch. The Newalls, Jarryd and older brother Clinton, last month launched an online sporting goods store called Clutch Sports and are splitting half the profits with sports clubs nominated by customers. Jarryd said the pair wanted to build a business with a â€œgood, wholesome point of differenceâ€?. â€œMy brother and I are weekend warriors of all sports,â€? Jarryd said. â€œWeâ€™ve grown up loving and living vicariously through them. â€œWe were both looking to get out of the corporate world and sports was our love and we wanted to find a way to marry the two. â€œWe thought what better way to do that

than to fund clubs. There are so many sports clubs, especially in the west, like tennis, cricket, soccer, footy and basketball but so few sponsorship dollars to go around each year.â€? Jarryd said his family knows firsthand the struggle to raise money. â€œOur parents were â– always volunteering for our footy club growing up,â€? he said. â€œThere are so many volunteers at clubs that give up their time to do choccy drives and sausage sizzles, and theyâ€™re all fantastic, but this is another way to help raise those vital funds.â€? Lake deaths sentence challenged By Alesha Capone

Coach honoured for years of work For Ebony Egan, the past 28 years she has spent in calisthenics has been a journey of fun, friendship and family. Mrs Egan started calisthenics at the age of six, and is now a coach at the not-for-profit BeeJay’s Calisthenics Club in Werribee, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year. Calisthenics is something of a family affair for Mrs Egan – her sister Belinda founded BeeJay’s and their mother Julie is the club’s costume co-ordinator. Mrs Egan’s daughter, three-year-old Charlotte, is also a student at the club. Mrs Egan has been named a finalist for the Victorian Calisthenics Coaches Association Coach Of The Year Award, which will be announced on June 1. Mrs Egan, who is pregnant with twins, said she “burst into tears” upon hearing the news. For the past three years, Mrs Egan has coached BeeJay’s intermediate students (those aged 13 to 16). “This is my sixth year of coaching, after the last five seasons my students walked away with four trophies at the state championships – I’ve been lucky to have girls who have worked with me,” she said. “I love seeing the girls push their limits to learn more and improve their skills.”

The Director of Public Prosecutions has been granted leave to appeal the reduced sentence of a woman who drove a car containing four of her children into a Wyndham Vale lake, resulting in the death of three of the youngsters. The DPP last week released a statement saying that the High Court had granted “special leave” to appeal the reduced sentence handed down to mother Akon Guode by the Court of Appeal. In 2017, Guode pleaded guilty to one charge of infanticide, two charges of murder and one charge of attempted murder after she drove a car containing four of her children into a lake. Guode received a sentence of 26 years and six months’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 20 years. However, last year Guode appealed to the Court of Appeal and was re-sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of 14 years. The DPP then filed an application for special leave to appeal the decision to the High Court. Guode’s four-year-old twins and 16-month-old son died when she drove a car into a Wyndham Vale lake in 2015. A fourth child, who was aged five at the time, survived after being pulled from the water. The Court of Appeal accepted that at the time Guode committed the offences, the balance of her mind was “disturbed” after giving birth to her youngest child. The court also heard that Guode had experienced a difficult life, having watched her husband being murdered in South Sudan before she herself was raped until she was unconscious. Help for mums in crisis By Esther Lauaki Renee Knight said she felt “sheer terror” when she became a first-time mum. Within weeks of giving birth to her son Hamish in early 2016, Ms Knight began to slip into deep postnatal depression and anxiety. “It started quite quickly,” she said. “I worked out myself that I had it and I went from managing it at home to needing medical intervention really quickly.”

On the advice of maternity staff, she sought help at Werribee Mercy Hospital’s specialist mother and baby unit where she stayed for six weeks. “I developed total insomnia,” Ms Knight said. “There was a horrendous period of time where I went 10 days without any sleep. “You just feel sheer terror of being a mum. “It’s soul sucking-responsibility is how I felt … feeling really unprepared for the unknown of parenthood. “I went from being successful and career driven, living my life and desperately wanting kids. “I had this expectation that the baby would do everything that the book said … and they just don’t.” Over four months, Ms Knight stayed a total of 11 weeks in the mother and baby unit at Werribee Mercy receiving specialist acute mental health treatment and bonded with her son. building at the hospital, a 54-bed inpatient mental health unit at Werribee Mercy Hospital, which opened last year and is now running at its 54-bed capacity. Ms Knight said the service “saved my life” and encouraged other mothers dealing with depression and anxiety to seek help.

“It’s a jewel in the community for mums,” she said. “I went in as a shell of a person and came out as a mum looking forward to living life with my little boy.” Hamish is now three years old and big brother to 10-month-old Fletcher.

Motocross a step closer Wyndham council has issued operational and construction tenders to redevelop a motocross track at Lawrie Emmins Reserve in Laverton North. Wyndham’s sports development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard said the $1.6 million project would include construction of a motocross track suited to beginners to intermediate level riders. “Council has been working hard to reopen the motocross track at Lawrie Emmins Reserve since it closed,” Cr Maynard said. “This exciting milestone sees us one step closer to achieving this goal. “Local interest in motocross is definitely on the rise, and by redeveloping we’re bringing the sport closer to our community so they no longer have to travel to Broadmeadows or Bacchus Marsh to have a ride.” The council established a Community Reference Group to provide advice on redeveloping the motocross track, which closed in 2010. Earlier this year, the council released The Lawrie Emmins Reserve draft master plan, which included plans for a major cycling sports precinct, ovals, gardens, wetlands and recreational areas. The new CFA fire station on Derrimut Road, Tarneit will not open until the completion of nearby roadwork and the installation of traffic signals, according to the CFA. Star Weekly last year reported that the $5.4 million station, which was then under construction, was on track to open in December, 2018. But a CFA spokesperson said recently that while construction work at the new station was complete, fire services were not expected to begin until “the completion of roadworks and traffic signal installation by VicRoads”. On Derrimut Road, Major Road Projects Victoria and project consortium Netflow are working on upgrades between Sayers and Dohertys roads as part of the $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade. Extra lanes are being added in each direction for the three-kilometre stretch and nine intersections will be upgraded. The intersection at Rippleside Terrace, which is close to the new Tarneit CFA station, is one of the intersections to be upgraded. Asphalting work was completed in the area earlier this month. Road crews also worked with CFA contractors to install underground conduits that are required so VicRoads traffic signalling cables can be laid. They will be used to activate emergency signals to warn drivers fire trucks are entering or exiting the station. Plans to install the signals have been approved by VicRoads. Major Road Projects Victoria project director Frank De Santis said: “We’ve been working extensively with the CFA and have installed underground conduits for the new Tarneit fire station as part of recently completed asphalting work on Derrimut Road”.

Chirnside hub kicks on A year on from the opening of the $11.75 million redevelopment that transformed the Chirnside Park Hub into a state-of-the-art sports facility there’s been plenty to cheer about. The home to Werribee’s football and cricket clubs is now a base for AFL and cricket pathway programs and has hosted WRFL finals across all divisions. Werribee Football Club chief executive Mark Penaluna said the transformation has improved all the clubs at Chirnside Park. “It’s been able to increase the profile of Wyndham,” Mr Penaluna said. “Our club has the ability to attract these high profile events. We’re pleased that we’ve been able to facilitate and work with different stakeholders in relation to those events.” Mr Penaluna said some of the highlights of the past year included citizenship ceremonies, the AFL women’s games and the Wyndham Business and Tourism Association luncheons. Werribee Football Club joined with North Melbourne Football Club to deliver programs from this new facility with The Huddle, aimed

at engaging and inspiring young people, primarily those aged between 12 and 25. “It’s quite unique that The Huddle is happening in Wyndham,” Mr Penaluna said. “It’s great that an AFL club is delivering its programs together with ours and servicing the region. “We’re very lucky to have it and so is the Wyndham community.” The redevelopment was funded by Wyndham council, the Werribee Football Club, the AFL, AFL Victoria, the state government and the federal government. The hub includes a pavilion, facilities for women’s football, a new grandstand, a commercial kitchen and kiosk, a multi-purpose social meeting room, community spaces and improved car parking. Network names new 5G suburbs By Alesha Capone Five suburbs in Melbourne’s west will be among the first in the state to have network sites built as part of Optus’ 5G home broadband rollout. The telco last week announced the first 30 suburbs and towns in Victoria where it plans to build the sites, including Braybrook, Laverton’s west, Hoppers Crossing, Williams

Landing and Maidstone. Other areas on the list include Greenvale Reservoir, Kensington, Geelong West, Norlane, Rye Central and Campbellfield South. The Optus sites, to be built by Ericsson, are set to have the antennas and equipment needed for 5G access installed across the coming months, although the locations are subject to change due to varying factors, including site acquisition.

Optus’ head of network access planning and quality, Kent Wu, said: “We are working closely with Ericsson to conduct critical inter-operability device testing so that we can deliver a compatible 5G home broadband product to customers and open these sites up as part of our expressions of interest campaign”. Fifth-generation cellular network technology, or 5G, provides broadband access, and is expected to deliver faster internet

network speeds and allow more devices to connect to the network at one time. Optus is planning to build 1200 5G sites across Australia by March next year. West is best for housing prices By Alesha Capone Two Wyndham suburbs have been named the most affordable areas to buy a house more than 20 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD. Figures released by property data and analytics provider CoreLogic last week named the top 10 “bargain” suburbs to buy a house, both within 10 kilometres of Melbourne and more than 20 kilometres from Melbourne. Werribee and Hoppers Crossing placed first and second on the latter list. Werribee’s median house value was $486,022 in March this year, making it the most

affordable suburb more than 20 kilometres outside of Melbourne, while Hoppers Crossing was the second most affordable with a median house value of $527,217. Roxburgh Park ($529,134) placed third, followed by Craigieburn ($530,890), Mernda ($544,008) and Epping ($549,439). Tarneit placed seventh on the list with a median value of $550,439 and Truganina ninth with a median value of $558,376. In contrast, for “affordable” houses located within 10 kilometres of Melbourne, Coburg North placed first with a median value of $736,820, Maidstone second on $738,738, West

Cheaper prices for houses in Melbourne’s west were the main reason David Dickson and his partner Petra Foulds bought a three-bedroom home in Kurunjang, moving in a month ago. Kurunjang was in the top 10 suburbs to have house prices rise, with a median boost of 8.5 per cent to $439,500. Mr Dickson is an aircraft engineer while Ms Foulds is a retail manager and their home is close to where both work. “We’re planning to be here for the next 10 to 15 years – maybe even longer,” Mr Dickson said.

Amalia hits a high note Whether she is singing, dancing, acting or drawing, nine-year-old Amalia Safonova is at home in the spotlight. The multi-talented youngster said she first started singing at age five. “I enjoy bringing happiness to people through my singing, and I just love dancing,” she said. “I don’t know why l like drawing – I’m a creative person.” Amalia, who is in grade 4 at Heathdale Christian College in Werribee, often sings solo at school assemblies. She is also a keen participant in eisteddfods and performing arts contests. “I’ve won 13 gold, three silver and 10 bronze for singing at classical compositions in all age groups,” she said. “I’m a soprano singer, and the highest note I can reach at the moment is an E, that’s two

A new research paper claims residents in six outer Melbourne municipalities are dealing with considerable lifestyle challenges. The paper, titled How Big, How Fast and at What Cost?, from the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute, at The University of Melbourne, focuses on Wyndham, Melton, Cardinia, Casey, Hume and Whittlesea. The paper states that these areas have experienced a decline in the proportion of people living near public transport, an increase in car use to travel to work and more individual commutes to work exceeding two hours. The paper said other common issues included increased rates of heart disease and obesity; “relatively poorer levels” of child development on entering schools, relatively higher levels of youth unemployment and proportionately lower levels of social capital. “Cheaper housing and better access to open space, which may attract people to outer suburban living, comes at a price, commonly associated with the lower population and job densities at greater distances from central Melbourne,” the paper stated. Wyndham council’s director of city economy, innovation and liveability, Peter McKinnon said the council was “aware that it needs to attract more business and investment to Wyndham and we are actively planning to grow the economy”. “We are passionate about promoting Wyndham and feel it has much to offer investors from its proximity to Avalon and Tullamarine airports, its accessibility to Melbourne and regional Victoria and its growing number of highly skilled and educated residents eager to gain employment locally,” he said.

Kathleen Kretzschmar and Jeannine Thorley are part of the close-knit community at Mercy Place Wyndham. The two women are volunteers at the Werribee aged-care home. Mrs Kretzschmar started volunteering at the home when her mother, Jessica, moved in while Ms Thorley’s late mother Rita was also a resident of the home. Ms Thorley and Mrs Kretzschmar said their volunteering duties included helping residents with lifestyle activities, lending a hand in the on-site cafe and chatting in a friendship and knitting group. “We discuss what happened in the week, the news – such as the royal baby,” Mrs Kretzschmar said. “I love to come in and interact with people, I’m on my own and it gives me something to do and it’s better than sitting at home.” Both women said they enjoyed making friends with the residents, their relatives and the staff at Mercy Place Wyndham. Ms Thorley said they ended up becoming “like family”. “The residents love seeing new faces,” she said. “It’s good to come here.” Ms Thorley said she would encourage other Wyndham residents to become volunteers at the home. The Wyndham Youth Resource Centre outdoor area redevelopment project, at Derrimut Road, is open to all community members – no matter how many wheels they’re rolling on. Saving the wild horses About 600 horse breeds live among us, from the dashing thoroughbred to the fluffy and robust Clydesdale. Yet there is only one breed that is truly wild. The endangered Przewalski’s horse of Mongolia has never been tamed, it’s not ridden and although they look like an overgrown pony, they’re never saddled for children’s birthdays. While common perception often places the likes of the American Mustang or the Australian Brumby in the ‘wild horse’ division, they are domestic horses turned feral. Przewalski’s horses once ranged freely through Europe and Asia, but competition with humans and livestock, as well as environmental changes, pushed them east to Asia. The holy animal of Mongolia is stocky and has a big head, it has dark legs and the colour of its body resembles a Melbourne café latte. Its thick black main stands cocked like a punk-rock mowhawk. Now an endangered species, the free-roaming equine was once just one hungry wolf-pack away from extinction. And, while wild numbers are growing, they can only be found in small groups in Mongolia, Kazakhstan, China or Russia. A small and growing number of captive horses can also be found at Werribee’s Open Range Zoo. Habitat conservation and breeding programs, such as the one at Werribee Zoo, has helped the numbers of Przewalski’s horse increase to 300 in the wild and more than 1500 in national parks, sanctuaries and zoos across the world. The zoo’s population of Przewalski’s horse has grown dramatically after the births of three foals in the past 10 months. The most recent addition to the family, a yet-to-be-named three-week-old female foal, is

the latest achievement in Zoos Victoria’s fight to keep the unique breed alive. Werribee Open Range Zoo Savannah co-ordinator Davin Kroeger said he was pleased with how well the newborn had been accepted by the herd. “The youngest foal is living with a lot of sisters, brothers and aunties. They’re all very

protective of her,” Mr Kroeger said. “Werribee Zoo’s herd are an insurance population in case something catastrophic happens to their cousins in the wild. The newest foal is probably not aware that she and her family serve a critical role in the survival of Przewalski’s horse.” – Nine

Wyndham’s connection with China has been signed and sealed with a handshake. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw, cultural diversity portfolio holder Henry Barlow and deals, investment and major projects director Kate Roffey last week returned from China, where they finalised a Sister Cities agreement with Changzhou to develop economic, trade and cultural ties. The delegation’s packed four-day trip included official meetings, signing the agreement and unveiling a memorial stone celebrating the Sister City relationship, and visits to Tianning Buddhist Pagoda and Qingguo Alley, the science and education town, Canal 5 Creativity Campus, the city planning hall and Changzhou Technical School of Tourism and Business. Cr Shaw said the agreement would provide access to new opportunities and represents a milestone in Wyndham’s recognition as an international city. “There are many benefits that both the Sister City and study tour visits will deliver to the people of Wyndham,” she said. “Attracting visitors, growing economic investment and developing collaborative partnerships to deliver innovation based projects are critical. “We’re committed to accelerating infrastructure investment rather than relying on government funding alone,” Cr Shaw said. Traffic is the number one issue for Wyndham residents for the sixth year running, latest community satisfaction survey results reveal. The independent survey, undertaken by market research agency Metropolis Research on behalf of eight councils across the state, was designed to collect community feedback. The survey involved conducting 1200 face-to-face interviews with Wyndham residents, with the results benchmarked against the statewide average of other municipalities and similar growth areas. Metropolis Research director Dale Hubner said 35 per cent of respondents identified traffic as the top issue for the council to address. “Parking was another issue that came up, 14 per cent of people raised that as an issue, which is the same as the Melbourne average,” Mr Hubner said. He said commuting times were consistent with previous years with 30 per cent of Wyndham drivers taking at least 90 minutes to get to and from work and 40 per cent of drivers taking an hour or longer. The survey also found that 9 per cent of respondents identified safety as one of the top three issues in Wyndham, down from 17 per cent last year. “People overall are feeling a bit more safe than they have in recent years,” Mr Hubner said. Participants were asked to rate council’s overall performance and provide feedback about governance and leadership, advocacy, customer service; and key service areas such as road maintenance, town planning, community development, recreation, arts and libraries. Survey results will be available on the council’s website in coming weeks.

The Kulin Dreaming Music Fest, Wyndham’s first free indigenous music festival, will be held this Saturday in Hoppers Crossing. The festival will feature a wealth of indigenous talent, including rapper Briggs, Alice Skye, MC Philly, DRMNGNOW, Pirritu (Brett Lee) and Maylene, along with artist workshops, food trucks and more. Funding to fix NDIS shortfall

Old videos get new life By Alesha Capone Seventeen-year-old Joshua Piovesan has not yet finished school – but is already running his own business. Joshua said he started Analog to Digital, which converts historical video formats to digital mediums, after he taught himself to convert old tapes his grandparents had not viewed for more than two decades to a more modern format.

“I have been fortunate enough to have had a strong response from the local community, which I am very excited about,” Joshua said. He said that he enjoyed seeing his customers’ reactions to seeing their video footage again, often after a long time. “When they finally see the video again after 20 or 25 years, customers tell me it’s like they’re reliving their memories from a bygone era all over again,” he said. Mental health service providers are being proactive in their efforts to improve patient support. Mercy Health, which includes Werribee Mercy Hospital, will receive $2.8 million in state funding over two years to treat and care for people with a significant disability who can not yet access the NDIS, or are not eligible. In partnership with mental health service provider Breakthru, the hospital will be delivering psychosocial support to people with a severe mental illness. Breakthru chief executive Paul Stiff said the funding was “extremely important”. “The NDIS had got many gaps and people with mental illness are falling through the gaps quite severely,” Mr Stiff said. He said the service would work in “innovative ways”. “We will be going to the people that need the support rather than having them come to us,” Mr Stiff said. “We will also be working with people in homelessness to reduce the mental health impact as well.” Mental Health Minister Martin Foley said the state government was taking action to make sure Wyndham patients don’t fall through the cracks. “We will not sit back while Victorians living with serious mental illness … are made to wait,” Mr Foley said at a visit to Werribee Mercy Hospital last week. MY WYNDHAM Werribee’s Simon Fugazzotto has been a Physical Education teacher at Baden Powell College for 10 years. He chats with Alesha Capone. What do you like most about your job? I think what I enjoy is just getting young children engaged in physical activity and seeing them try new sports. The ultimate goal is to see them take up sport or an activity outside school, get involved and hopefully start doing that three nights a week. I work at both campuses of Baden Powell College, two days in Tarneit and three days at Derrimut Heath Primary School in Hoppers Crossing, which is also part of the college as well. I also teach Italian.

I’m also the Tarneit Primary District co-ordinator. There are eight primary schools in the area and I’m in charge of co-ordinating sports events they all participate in, such as athletics, cross country and swimming. It involves running meetings, organising facilities, organising umpires and that kind of thing. I also try and help out with sponsorships, such as with the breakfast club at Baden Powell College. A few friends of mine who run local businesses, Harmony Residential and Pronto Earthworks, sponsor the club two days a week so kids can come to school and have breakfast. I’ve also donated some of my weekly wage

Ammas Pantry is their first foray into the hospitality industry, having taken over the premises on the corner of Parker and Hyde following the closing of a relatively short-lived predecessor. They met when their two Sri Lankan-background sons attended, and became pals, at the kinder opposite their new cafe. As you’d expect, that kinder and the next-door school play a fairly big part in the life, and prospective prosperity, of Ammas Pantry – but there’s lots here for a broader audience, too. So while there’s the muffins and sandwiches and coffee you’d expect of an establishment right opposite two education institutions, Ammas is also delivering fine lunchtime meals that are delicious, affordable and of just the right heft for a daytime feed. As I find out to my pleasure and satisfaction during two lunch visits. Both my meals are built around brown rice, something that would cause Bennie to get a tad sniffy – but which I enjoy, especially when two differing sets of Asian flavours are so adeptly harnessed. The fine, mild chicken curry, for instance, at $15.50. It’s handily accompanied by that brown rice, a veg-studded dal, chutney, raita, a Sri-Lankan-style dry coconut jumble and a papadum. It’s excellent. It makes me happy. Same deal with this identically priced lunch

Prefab homes go upmarket It’s not that there’s anything terribly novel about prefabricated houses. A yurt is a prefab, or transposable dwelling, that can be quickly reassembled. And during the gold rush, Melbourne was the prefab capital of the world, with thousands of flat-packed, fast-build cottages imported in the early 1850s. More contemporary prefab variations have been available for a couple of decades, which now has many savvy Australian companies operating in a market niche estimated to make up 2 to 4 per cent of new home constructions. The factory-built components that can be delivered to site where they can be completed to lock-up sometimes in a matter of days, come in two forms: as fully fitted modular units that can be bolted together into variable floor plans; or as flat-pack panels with all the requisite plumbing, wiring and insulation already integrated. No longer do prefabs look like conjoined containers that quite literally came off the back of a truck. As Craig Chatman, registered architect, builder and founder of the Melbourne outfit ARKit agrees, modular and panel-building systems are becoming so sophisticated, responsive to client needs, and

flexible in the way they can be shaped up that “from the street you won’t know that it’s a building that’s been manufactured off site”. “Embellished prefabs” is what Chatman calls the new generation modular housing ARKit, established eight years ago, now employs 40 people – including eight full-time architects – in its Sunshine factory. It has seen an annual doubling of business, with much of the demand coming from Melbourne’s inner north and the west. “Footscray, Newport and Williamstown have become hot spots for us,” Chatman says. A University of Melbourne study predicts that within a decade, Australia’s modular-building sector could command a 15 per cent slice of the construction industry. Chatman believes the reason for this will come down to one word: certainty. “For between $400,000 and $1.2 million, we can deliver on a tight schedule, which means that clients aren’t put through the wringer in terms of conventional building costs, nor be sloshing around a muddy paddock for 12 months”. SPORT Deer Park hands out a football lesson to the Tigers There are times when you have to just tip your cap to the opposition and say well done. Werribee Districts coach Chris Gilham was in that situation on Saturday when Deer Park rolled his team in comprehensive fashion by 55 points at Soldiers Reserve. The Tigers simply had no answers to the might of the six-time defending premiers before half-time, but at least showed some fight in the second half. “We knew they were going to be hard to beat, but we gave ourselves a legitimate chance because we’ve been in good form,” Gilham said. “We got the first goal and had the first couple of scoring shots, but once they got rolling … they were really sharp. “It went from one end to the other on the back of our errors and they scored every time. “That was as well as I’ve seen any team play.” Werribee Districts were not without their chances in the first half and managed to boot six goals of their own. Deer Park was in first gear from the outset. The Lions were super efficient too, kicking 15 goals from 18 shots up to half-time to lead by 53. “It was windy and swirly, but they couldn’t

miss,” Gilham said. “If you make errors against the really good sides, they’re the ones that make you pay. We made a few and you always do, but they turn those errors into goals.” Even Deer Park coach Marc Bullen said it was his side’s best performance in 18 months. Werribee Districts can take a lot out of the game too. The Tigers had their moments, particularly in the second half. “After half-time, we dug in and were much more competitive, we were able to score,” Gilham said. “We could’ve went two ways, one we could’ve said this isn’t our day and went on to get hammered, or we could dig in and keep having a crack. “To our blokes credit, we didn’t take a backward step after half-time.” Lee Johnston was one of the standouts for Werribee Districts for his ability to keep Jack Redpath’s impact to a minimum.

Dillon Viojo-Rainbow and Nayef Hamad had good moments in the midfield, while Lachie Rainbow continued his goalkicking touch with three majors. Werribee Districts will face Point Cook in a local derby at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday. Meanwhile, Hoppers Crossing was merciless in its dismantling of Point Cook, winning by 132 points at Hogans Road Reserve. Brenton Payne (seven goals), Daniel Strnak (six) and Riley Kitchen (four) were unstoppable. The Warriors will square off with Caroline Springs away at Town Centre Oval on Saturday. In division 3, Wyndham Suns lost by 112 points to Albanvale. Tarneit was also a shock loser, upset by 23 points away to Sunshine Heights. Falcons hit their straps By Lance Jenkinson Wyndhamvale has been playing with great confidence in the Western Region Football League division 2. Demoted from the top flight last season, the high-flying Falcons have not only marched to a 6-0 record, but they have been pecking at the carcasses of their opponents. Falcons player-coach Chris Moreland is in his first year in charge of the Black Forest Road club, but is well aware of the dancing on the Falcons’ grave that happened last season. Moreland has implored his players to serve up a similar dose to the clubs in the second tier. “Where Wyndhamvale has been, they’ve been up [in the first division] for a long time,” he said. “They’ve been smashed, they’ve been on the receiving end of a lot of hidings overs the years. “It’s good to start giving some hidings back.” Wyndhamvale served up a three-quarter hiding to Newport at Wyndham Vale South Oval on Saturday before putting the cue in the rack. The Falcons had opened up a 78-point lead while keeping the Porters to two goals in the first three quarters. They eventually settled on a 55-point win because of Newport’s willingness to fight it out till the end. Moreland was delighted with the brand of football played by Wyndhamvale for the most part. “We want to be really good at the contested footy and we smashed them at that,” he said. “Every chance we’d get, we’d tackle them. “We had scoreboard pressure. “We also did the basic things that makes the football club great again.” Instead of putting Bol Kolong on a pedestal for his stellar game in the ruck or highlighting the six-goal performance of Nathan Bisset, Moreland preferred to focus on the collective. Moreland is a team-first coach and individuals will have big games as a result of that, not the team winning as a result of a big game from an individual. “I’ll tell you something, at Wyndhamvale we don’t rely on one person,” Moreland said. “We’re a club that likes the 18 people on the ground chipping in. “It might be Joel Russell one week, it might be Jack Tessari, it might be Nathan Bisset, it might be Daniel Smith – it could be anyone. “Footy is an easy game, if everyone beats their man, you’ll win.” With some persistent prodding, Moreland eventually relented and rated Kolang’s impact as second to none on the field.

Rudan rides into the west By Lance Jenkinson Western United will have an assertive figure providing powerful messages when it takes to the field for its inaugural A-League season later this year. Coach Mark Rudan will promote a “no excuses” mentality. “There will be challenging times,” Rudan said. “I’ve spoken to coaches and people who have been involved with new clubs and it is challenging. “There’s going to be some bumps along the way, but I’m more than confident we’ll see those through.” Rudan’s appointment at Western United was one of the worst kept secrets in the A-League. Once his season with Wellington Phoenix was complete, it seemed only a matter of time before he was unveiled in the green and black. The big announcement took place at United’s new headquarters at Palmers Gateway in Truganina last Thursday. The backdrop to the press conference was sweeping views over Wyndham, with the construction zones below signalling the rapid growth of the region.

A hard hat for Rudan would not have been inappropriate as he sets out on his own construction project. “To be the inaugural coach of a brand new side is something that genuinely excites me,” he said. “To think that you’ve got a blank piece of paper that you can create what you want.” Rudan has the experience on and off the field to see Western United through its formative years.

The 43-year-old had a playing career spanning almost two decades. The centre back played professionally in Asia, Europe and in the A-League with Sydney FC and Adelaide United. Rudan proved his worth as an A-League coach with Wellington Phoenix last season, turning a side that finished second-last in 2017-18 to a finals outfit this season. United football director Steve Horvat and chief executive officer Maurice Bisetto went through an exhaustive interview process to find a coach, talking to applicants locally and abroad. They are convinced Rudan is the right person for the job. “We’re excited about announcing Mark Rudan as the man who will sit at the helm of Western United Football Club and lead this group of youthful talent and experience to success,” Bisetto said. Rudan understands what Western United aims to represent. There was no second guessing his words when he talked about the west of Melbourne and what the club can mean for the people from the inner and outer west and even as far as Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong.

Scrappy Devils get the job done Top-of-the-ladder Werribee Devils had to survive a late scare on the scoreboard to overcome Casey Cavaliers in the Big V basketball women’s state championship at Casey Stadium on Saturday night. The Devils emerged with an 81-72 victory, but played nowhere near their potential on a frustrating night for coach Reece Potter. “We did get it done, but it was probably a sloppy performance to be honest,” he said. “Not to take anything away from Casey because they made it a tight contest, but we certainly have to tidy up some things. “We’ll obviously take the win and we did a good job to steady late … but there were signs that we really need to work on things within our structures and really tighten that up in the back half of the season.” Werribee struggling against Casey is nothing new. The last time the two sides met, earlier in the season, it took the same late grit for the Devils to come away with an even tighter two-point victory. Even though the Cavaliers went into Saturday’s clash on the back of a four-game losing streak, they took it up to a Devils side that was a hot favourite. “They’re a tough match-up for us,” Potter said. “They’re a really good big team, so it’s a bit awkward for us because we’re not an overly tall or physical team. “Last time, it came down to the last couple of possessions and this game was really close the last few minutes.” Alisia Jenkins played another starring role for Werribee. She finished with a double-double 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists – just another night at the office for the star import. The best development to come out of the game for Werribee was the performance of Alexyz Vaioletama. Vaioletama had the scoreboard ticking over early when the Devils established their lead, but also came up big in clutch moments late in the game when Casey made a late run. She finished with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists. “She’s starting to show signs of what she can do,” Potter said. “She is legitimately one of the best imports in the league.” Potter was also pleased with the impact of Sam Moodie and Maxine Allan off the bench. Sarah Elsworthy was not as lethal offensively, but had the enormous task of taking on Casey import Sarah Halejian and did a respectable job. “Culture starts with people and players,” Rudan said. “The players will have a big say on who we are and what we want to be on the football park. “From the west side of the bridge all the way to Geelong, these are the people, they’re our fans, they’re the people we want to work for.” Rudan has promised more of the same direct style of play he initiated at the Phoenix. “I like to play a pretty dynamic brand of football,” Rudan said. “You won’t see too many balls going sideways.” Rudan could not deny having some involvement in guiding Western United in the process of player acquisitions and is delighted with the players at his disposal so far. Some big names have already joined, including A-League goalkeeper of the year Filip Kurto, Greek international Panagiotis Kone and Socceroo Scott McDonald. “Every single player that’s been signed to the club, I’m excited to work with,” Rudan said. “You have a look at the youth, you have a look at the experience, you have a look at what they can bring and there’s so much upside to each individual. As a coach, I can’t wait to get started and work with these guys.”

Werribee Centrals was pipped in a thriller by Inverleigh in the Geelong and District Football League Smiths Holden Cup at Galvin Park on Saturday. The Centurions were overrun by two points after leading at three-quarter time by 18. Tito Nyawela was named the Centurions best, while Blake Taylor kicked three goals. In the Victorian Amateur Football Association division 3, Westbourne Grammarians went down by 27 points to Richmond Central in an upset. The Warriors are sitting in fifth place with a 3-3 record.

Jared Raynes has taken out the Footscray Cycling Club’s coveted Harry Jones Memorial Handicap. The race is held in honour of a legend of the FFC who epitomised the club’s spirit of humility, determination and camaraderie. Raynes handled the tricky windy conditions the best on the day and took advantage of some misfortune of other competitors, including Shane Ward and Dom Dudkiewicz, who both punctured tyres, and Travis Small, who had a crash. Raynes took the win from Andrew Naughtin and Geoff Robinson.

Hockey

Werribee is back in the Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 1 winners’ circle after a 2-1 win over PEGS on the road at PEGS Sports Fields. In women’s Vic League 1, Werribee had a 1-1 draw with Knox at The Knox School. Holly Stewart was the goalscorer for the Tigers.
