Council’s high flyers By Esther Lauaki Ratepayers will foot the bill for more than $80,000 in travel costs for four Wyndham councillors, the council’s chief executive and two directors as they head overseas this month to develop partnerships in China and the US. The first all-expenses-paid trip, costing $16,500 for four days, will depart on Saturday (May 18) for Changzhou, China. The second trip, a 12-day study tour to the US, will leave on Sunday (May 25) and cost about $65,000. Both trips will be paid out of the council’s economic development and professional development budget.

Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw, cultural diversity portfolio holder Henry Barlow and deals, investment and major projects director Kate Roffey will finalise a Sister Cities agreement with Changzhou to develop economic, trade and cultural ties. Cr Shaw said the Sister Cities relationship, two years in the making, would provide access to new opportunities. “I understand that some people are not always supportive of overseas travel,” she said in a statement on Facebook. “However, given that we are set to be the size of Canberra, we need to make things happen for ourselves and generate investment for jobs and infrastructure.” In contrast, Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov headed off a ratepayer backlash over his trip to China last week by agreeing to pay his own travel and accommodation expenses of nearly $4000, as reported by Star Weekly last week. Wyndham chief executive Kelly Grigsby said the Maribyrnong mayor’s situation was unique. “Given that the travel relates to council business or professional development, Wyndham City covers the cost of the trip,” she said. “This ensures that the most suitable councillor or staff member is taking part, rather than the decision being based on capacity for an individual to pay.”

Ms Grigsby will be accompanied next week by strategy and policy impact head Natalie Walker and councillors Kim McAliney and Josh Gilligan on a visit to New York, Washington and San Francisco with the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA). “The UDIA study tour will be attended by other councils, planning authorities, developers and other industry representatives,” she said.

“It is an unprecedented opportunity for the stakeholders who make key decisions about Wyndham’s future development to learn together about what can be achieved in Wyndham. “Decisions around any council business expense are not made lightly and Wyndham council is open and transparent about costs and outcomes.”

However, the council refused to answer Star Weekly’s inquiry as to whether councillors would be flying business class or in which hotels they would be staying. Ms Grigsby said all costs incurred on both the Changzou delegation and the UDIA study tour to the US would be reported via the publicly available travel register next month.

Labor pitches Wyndham link By Alesha Capone The Labor Party has committed to building a $50 million road link through Wyndham to help ease traffic congestion if it wins the federal election. Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said the Wyndham West Link would deliver a continuous road link from Tarneit to Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes, Wyndham Vale and Werribee to the Princes Freeway. “In order to ease congestion, reduce travel times and meet the growing needs of the

Wyndham region, we need to invest in vital infrastructure such as the Wyndham West Link,” she said when announcing the plan last week. A statement from the federal Labor Party said: “An elected Shorten Labor government will consult with local and state governments to complete and duplicate both ends of Armstrong Road to link Tarneit to the freeway through Wyndham Vale and Werribee. The first stage of the project will link Armstrong and Ison roads, between Black

Forest Road and the Princes Freeway, with a bridge over the railway lines. “The link between Sayers Road and Armstrong Road will be completed in the second stage of the project with a bridge over the Werribee River. “On completion, this vital piece of congestion-busting infrastructure will ease traffic on Ballan Road and Heaths Road and make it easier for locals to travel to work and move around our city.”

The Liberal candidate for Gellibrand, Anthony Mitchell, said his party’s plan to reduce congestion included a $4 billion Urban Congestion Fund and a $100 billion investment in transport infrastructure. “If elected, I will advocate for a share of the Coalition’s funds to be allocated to Melbourne’s west,” Mr Mitchell said. “These funds will be allocated towards the updating and improving of our road network across the region.” The Gellibrand electorate includes parts of Point Cook, Laverton North and Williams Landing.

Greens candidate Jay Dessi has stepped down as candidate for the seat of Lalor in the upcoming federal election over offensive social media posts. Mr Dessi released a statement last week apologising for any offence that the posts may have caused. The posts, which date from 2012 to 2015, included sexist and racist comments on Facebook. Greens leader Richard Di Natalie said the posts were “clearly unacceptable”. A Victorian Greens spokesperson said that “… social media has created new challenges for all parties in the candidate selection process, particularly for younger candidates who have grown up using social media”. “Following the Victorian election, the Australian Greens provided additional resources to state parties to assist in the vetting of social media profiles. “As a grassroots organisation, we do rely upon the assistance of candidates during this process.” The spokesperson said that when it came to Mr Dessi, “some unsavoury comments from several years ago were not identified”. “The Victorian Greens apologise for this error,” the spokesperson said.

Funding shortfall hits college By Alesha Capone

Stars dance to raise funds A charity dance gala to be held in Hoppers Crossing later this year is aiming to raise $50,000 for a worthwhile cause. Avalon Dance Stars on the Floor will see well-known Wyndham identities paired with top ballroom dancers, who will train them in routines to be performed on Friday, July 19 at the Encore Events Centre. One of the gala organisers, Heather Marcus, said the Wyndham “dance stars” would fundraise in the lead-up to the event, with all money they raised to go to the Mental Health Foundation Australia and efforts to prevent youth suicide, especially within the Wyndham area. Ms Marcus said that Chris MacGregor, of MacGregor Logistics – a national logistics business based in Melbourne’s west - had already donated $10,000 towards the $50,000 fundraising goal. She said the dance star who raised the most money in the lead-up to the gala would receive a trophy, and that there would also be a trophy for the Best Dance Star. Ms Marcus said that around 800 members of the public were expected to buy tickets to attend the gala. Parents of pupils at Saltwater P-9 College in Point Cook have expressed disappointment the school will not offer year seven next year. A school newsletter, issued last month, said Saltwater would not be able to cater for year seven in 2020 “without further funding” to build future planned stages of the college. A petition on the ipetiions.com website, calling on the state government to give Saltwater funding to either complete its planned stage two build or to provide learning spaces for grade six students to continue their studies next year, has attracted 400 signatures. In the comments section, one parent wrote: “If you cater for year 6, then you are obliged to cater them for the following year 7. “Parents are already deeply invested in the school with computers, uniforms and curriculum that it would be destabilizing to the child’s development to have to move again.” Mother Renee Belsey said the news about year seven not being offered at the school had left more than 30 families “scrambling around” trying to find options for their children. Ms Belsey’s son, grade 5 pupil Benjamin, has even written a letter to Altona MP Jill Hennessy asking for “funding for our secondary building and facilities”. Another mother, Casey Knight said her family moved to Point Cook in September last year, especially so their three children could attend Saltwater. Jill Hennessy said she has been in discussions with the Minster for Education “advocating on behalf of the interests of families and students within the Saltwater P-9 College school community”. Friends farewell ‘gentle’ man By Esther Lauaki Parmpreet Punia has been remembered by his friends and loved ones for his kind heart and generosity. The 23 year-old, who recently moved from Tarneit to St Albans, died in the early hours of April 28 when the van he was driving collided with a truck while travelling from Melbourne to Adelaide delivering blood with the Australian Red Cross service. Gurpreet Sidhu, a roommate and close friend of Mr Punia, said he was a “child at heart”, always ready to help others and a hard worker. “We got to know about his death after some

common friends alerted us through Facebook,” Mr Sidhu said. “It took us a while to accept the news … He was an innocent and gentle human being. “His parents are in no condition to speak over the phone. Param was their only hope.” Mr Sidhu started a crowdfunding campaign on Facebook which has raised more than $45,000 to cover the cost of Mr Punia’s funeral and to support his family in India. “While we in Australia say goodbye to a friend and coworker, Parmpreet, the only son of his mother and father, are now without his support and face a tough struggle ahead,” he said.

Mr Punia’s family in Australia decided he would be buried in Australia and not repatriated to India. “The decision would be made on the basis of the condition of the body, which we have been told is in really bad shape,” Mr Sidhu said. Australian Red Cross Blood Service acting chief executive Greg Wilkie said police were investigating. “Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with the family, friends, and co-workers of the driver,” he said. Mr Punia is survived by his parents and a younger sister, who lives with her husband in Canada.

A masterful victory Shock, and then elation, hit Werribee Masters Football Club after a recent win – one three years in the making. The over-45s team, which competes in the AFL Masters Victorian Metropolitan League, earlier this month clinched its first victory since the club’s Legends Team beat Melbourne in 2015. With a home ground advantage at Wyndham Vale Reserve, the team, currently fifth on the eight-team ladder, beat Chirnside Park by 53 points. Coach Michael Byrne congratulated his players for a strong game. “With the team being strengthened by the inclusion of a few key players, we were able to out-play the opposition for most of the game,” Byrne said. “We had many good players across every line … players willing to put their bodies

on the line, setting an example for others to follow. “We are improving with each game and, with a little more confidence, will win many more this season.” Team member John Crennan said the players’ hard work was starting to pay off. “To get the win shows we are improving and on the right track,” Crennan said. “The culture around our club is good, but will get better as we continue to see more positives and win a few more games. Zoo places ban on single use plastics

Georgia Pistone, Alexis Preston and Anna Shedrina – who all train and compete at the Werribee Victorian Clay Target Club – have been selected to represent Australia in the 2019 Universal Trench World Championships to be held in France during August.

Single-use plastics have been banned at Zoos Victoria’s three sites, including Werribee Open Range Zoo. The sale and use of single-use plastic bottled water, soft drinks, straws and plastic bags was banned at the zoo properties at the start of this month. In addition, from June 1, the zoo properties will have a new three-bin waste system available to the public, divided into organics, comingled and soft-plastics, such as single-use food wrappers. Soft plastics will be recycled in Victoria through an arrangement where Zoos Victoria will buy back products made from the plastics it recycles. The efforts are part of a program aimed at cutting to zero the amount of rubbish from zoo visitors which is sent to landfill. Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio described the program as “a great outcome for the environment and builds on the work our zoos already do to protect marine wildlife and promote conservation”. “We’re investing in initiatives that maximise recycling and reduce the amount of material that goes to landfill – it’s fantastic to see Zoos Victoria taking strong leadership to help achieve that goal,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

Ms Shedrina said she started “serious” competition shooting in her mid-twenties, and has not looked back since, winning a number of state, national and international medals in the clay target shooting disciplines. “I also run a successful business [Bronze Wing Ammunition] which operates in our industry – supplying clay target clubs and shops with clay targets, clay target throwing machines and shotgun cartridges – with our business being the sole supplier of these products for last year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games,” she said. Ms Shedrina said she and Ms Preston, 18, had previously competed together. “Alexis was my teammate when we took out the ladies’ team gold medal at the 2016 UT [Universal Trench] World Championships in Morocco,” Ms Shedrina said. Meanwhile, the upcoming competition in France will be the first time that Georgia, 15, represents Australia.

Building skills lift for Wyndham By Alesha Capone Labor has pledged $5 million in funding to build a construction skills and training apprenticeship centre for Gordon TAFE in Wyndham. Federal Labor Lalor MP Joanne Ryan made the announcement last week in the lead-up to Saturday’s election. The total cost of the training centre is expected to be $12 million, with Gordon TAFE to contribute the remaining $7 million. Ms Ryan said that the construction industry employed more than 32,000 workers in Melbourne’s west and had a projected employment growth of an additional 5000 employees in the five years to 2023. “The construction skills and future training apprenticeship centre at the Gordon TAFE in Wyndham will ensure that demand for skilled tradespeople in one of Victoria’s fastest-growing regions is met with a skilled workforce ready for meaningful work,” Ms Ryan said. Gordon acting chief executive Joe Ormeno said the organisation welcomed Labor’s announcement. “The apprenticeship centre at the Gordon is an important initiative that will support the next generation to meet the industry demand, now and into the future,” he said. The location and design of the centre will be developed after consultation with the Wyndham community.

Library for all languages A Tarneit school has added some newly-translated books into its Library of Languages. The Library of Languages at Baden Powell College, which was funded with a grant from Wyndham Rotary, is a collection of multilingual books and books in English, with translations completed by community members. Students and staff borrow these books to use in class or to read at home. Senior students, parents and support staff from the school last week volunteered to participate in a workshop, to help translate new books at the library into different languages spoken at home by students and families. The Library of Languages aims to make all families at the school, including those from non-English speaking backgrounds, feel they belong to the community. Police land $3m cannabis haul By Alesha Capone Police seized more than 830 cannabis plants, with a street value of about $3 million, during a two-day operation in Wyndham earlier this month. A Victoria Police spokesperson said detectives from the Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit executed warrants across 10 rental properties in relation to illicit drug

The police spokesperson said two people were arrested and charged during of the execution of the warrants. “A 28-year-old man from Point Cook and a 29-year-old man from Williams Landing were both arrested and charged with cultivating a commercial quantity of a narcotic plant and other drug-related offences,” the police spokesperson said. “Both men were remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court.”

The Williams Landing man has been remanded to appear in court again on July 30. The Point Cook man will appear in court again on August 5. The police spokesperson said police worked “tirelessly to reduce the supply of drugs”. “The investigation was part of Victoria Police’s ongoing efforts to detect and disrupt illicit drug activity in order to keep the community safe from harm,” they said.

A real Page turner Manor Lakes author Tabitha Page will soon launch a picture book about two girls who struggle to fit in because they are “different”. Forever Friends is the first book in Ms Page’s Fabulous Friends series, which touches on subjects such as acceptance, bullying, inclusion, fitting in, disability and anxiety. Ms Page said that in the book, one of the characters has a new pair of glasses, while the other character uses a wheelchair. The characters both face teasing at school, but also fast become friends. Ms Page said she drew on her own childhood when writing the book. “‘I didn’t fit the accepted criteria in school,” she said. “I was the fat kid, the nerdy, introverted kid who always had her head in a book and refused to pick on others when the majority were.” Nowadays, Ms Page has a certificate in Child Psychology, a certificate and diploma in Children’s Services and has spent years working in childcare. She said that caring for children with various

illness and disabilities, plus living with her own autoimmune disease, had inspired her to write books sharing their experiences. “Nowadays, with my chronic illness, I am still not part of the majority, but I have learned to embrace my differences and am using my experiences to empower others and bring about acceptance of these very important issues,” Ms Page said. By Goya Dmytryshchak Every day, six-year-old Finlay Morgan has to have two insulin injections and five blood tests to manage her type 1 diabetes. Her father David Morgan will soon leave their Williamstown home to literally climb mountains to raise funds for research into the disease, which has no cure. He is participating in Diabetes Australia’s 7x7 Challenge, climbing seven summits on seven continents over three years and running seven marathons across the globe. “I think my partner summarised it beautifully by saying it’s all consuming, [Finlay’s] management from a parental aspect,” Mr Morgan said. “I think the hardest point was when you try to tell a child that you’re going to start injecting them, against their will sometimes, whether they like it or not – it’s just a constant, their body needs it. “Just recently, she was fine and she’s spirited, she’s active and quite over the top often. “Then her [insulin] levels will be out and she’s just had three days when she’s barely getting up off the couch.” Mr Morgan said some mountaineers believed that to conquer the ‘Seven Summits’, Mount Kosciuszko must be included, while others insisted on Mount Carstensz. To cover all bases, he’s climbing eight summits: Everest on the India/Nepal border, Aconcagua in Argentina, Denali in the US, Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Elbrus in Russia, Vinson in Antarctica, Carstensz Pyramid in Indonesia and Kosciuszko in Australia. Congestion around Alfred Road will last for another week as drainage works continue. Traffic has been an issue in the streets surrounding the main road, which connects the Princes Highway to Browns Road, since its closure earlier this year. Alfred Road was scheduled to reopen at the end of last month but that deadline has blown out to May 22. Wyndham Vale resident Adrian Pilat told Star Weekly the works have added an extra 15 minutes to his regular 30-minute commute home from Altona. “I take Alfred Road just to avoid the Synnot Street traffic,” Mr Pilat said. “The lights and traffic along Synnot Street add about 15 minutes to my trip home trying to get to Ballan Road. “It just seems like it backs up traffic any way you go.” Westleigh Gardens residents complained in February about queues of up to more than a kilometre during the peak hours because of short phasing lights at the Geelong Road and Werribee Street intersection. Wyndham councillor Peter Maynard said the delay was due to “complexities around the coordination of subcontractors in the Easter period”. “The contractors have been notified that this is the final extension of time granted for this project,” he said. Marina plan for Williamstown By Goya Dmytryshchak An application to build a marina with dry stack boat storage and a launching facility in Williamstown is before the planning minister. Plans for the site known as Knights Slipway at 266-268 Nelson Place include a 75-metre pontoon and storage for 208 boats and other marine vessels. the applicant is Williamstown Marine Centre Pty Ltd with Paul Little and Scott O’Hare as directors. “Mr O’Hare and the family have been involved in the marine industry and this Williamstown area for over 30 years and

retain the lease on The Anchorage site,” it stated. “Dry stack boat storage is an increasingly popular method of storing boats, in particular in cities like Melbourne where there is a lack of supply of wet marina berths. “The managers of this site recognise the demand for dry stack storage on the shores of Port Phillip Bay and in close proximity to the city has increased.” The report stated the proposed development, with storage for 208 boats, would reduce the

parking of boat trailers on local streets and congestion at local boat ramps. Boat launching and retrieving would operate 24 hours, seven days a week. “The site plan responds to the modern lifestyle of the residents of Williamstown and surrounding areas with the provision of a recreational boating facility with dry stack boat storage, marina and slipping facilities as the level of boat ownership grows and storage capacity in residences and local street areas becomes tighter,” the report stated.

River health in spotlight The Werribee River Association is hoping a flood of attendees will flow to its upcoming event. The free Healthy Waterways evening, to be held later this month, will outline the work undertaken by the association’s staff and volunteers. Attendees will also have the opportunity to provide input and feedback into the association’s draft strategic plan. Werribee Riverkeeper John Forrester said Wyndham residents could attend Healthy Waterways to see what they could do to add to the health of the area and build pride in their community. Werribee River Association member, Lisa Field, who is also co-ordinator of a monthly litter clean-up group in Werribee called Love Our Street 3030, said the Healthy Waterways would be a “wonderful opportunity” to engage with the river association, its staff and volunteers.

Ambulance times in quick move By Esther Lauaki Ambulance response times in Wyndham continue to improve, according to the latest data. The latest quarterly performance data, for January to March, reveals ambulances arrived at the scene of emergencies 42 seconds quicker on average than during the same time last year. Ambulances arrived on average in 10 minutes and two seconds – an improvement on

the 10 minutes and 44 seconds of the previous year. A total of 90.2 per cent of Wyndham’s Code 1 ambulances arrived within 15 minutes, more than the 85.5 per cent a year prior. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly thanked paramedics and other medical personnel for

their dedication despite the mounting pressure due to Wyndham’s population growth. “Our local ambulance services are transporting more urgent cases and our hospitals are treating more patients,” she said. “We can thank our local hard-working paramedics, doctors, nurses and other health professionals for continuing to improve our health and emergency services.” In Wyndham, ambulances responded to 2040 Code 1 calls – up from 1831.

Ambulances across the state are turning out to more emergencies, with 72,318 Code 1 call-outs made in the quarter – 5705 more compared with the same period last year. Statewide, ambulances arrived at emergencies within an average 11 minutes and four seconds, down from 11 minutes 23 seconds. The quarterly data also showed Werribee Mercy Hospital undertook 156 more elective surgeries in the March quarter than a year prior and treated 90.7 per cent of elective patients within its benchmark times.

Life in the Green Wedge Hoppers Crossing photographer Imran Abul Kashem is using his creative talents in many ways. Mr Kashem said he has spent the past four years taking photographs of the changing landscape and farming properties in Werribee South. In September, he will publish 100 copies of a book, titled Green Wedge, featuring some of the photos. He is also hoping to include the images in an exhibition. Mr Kashem said that like many agricultural areas around the world, some of the family farms in Werribee South were being sold off as children decided they did not want a life on the land. “My grandfather was a farmer and my father was a civil engineer,” Mr Kashem said. “Here I see the same thing: farmers’ children often do not want to be farmers. “That same feeling is something that I see here, and made me want to do this project.”

Earlier this year, Mr Kashem was appointed an ambassador for Multicultural Arts Victoria’s (MAV) Emerge Cultural Leadership program, an initiative for artists and community members from indigenous and culturally diverse backgrounds. The MAV program will also provide funding support for Mr Kashem’s Green Wedge book. As well, Mr Kashem will be teaching a series of photography composition workshops at the Saltwater Art Studio in Point Cook. Chemical leak takes its toll By Rachel Eddie, The Age Seven people were hospitalised after a chemical spill in Laverton North last week. The Metropolitan Fire Brigade was called to a depot of trucking company Toll Global Logistics after hydrofluoric acid was spilled at 10.48am on May 8. A total of 33 firefighters attended the industrial property in Fitzgerald Road. Five firefighters and two members of the public were taken to hospital as a precaution

after they were affected by fumes. Hydrofluoric acid, a corrosive and poisonous chemical, was found to be leaking from a drum. The acid can cause severe and extremely painful burns and even death, and is present in aluminium cleaners, stain removers and fluorine compounds. It is understood some workers were unpacking a container when they noticed a strange smell and discovered a leak, activating the emergency response. In a statement, a Toll spokeswoman said safety and the safe handling of the goods was

of paramount importance. “Our Laverton North Global Logistics site is classed as a ‘major hazards facility’, licenced to safely handle hazardous goods,” she said. “On Wednesday afternoon, staff at the site found that there had been a small leak in one

of the containers they were moving. Toll’s standard emergency response procedures were immediately activated and we notified the relevant authorities who attended the scene. As per standard procedure, the area was isolated and staff were evacuated from the site. “While there were no injuries, two staff members were taken to hospital for observation as a standard precaution and they are expected to be released soon.” MFB hazmat technicians and a scientific adviser also attended the scene.

Zimbabwe sole saga From stationery to shoes, a Werribee family is doing all they can to help people living in Zimbabwe. In April last year, parents Grant and Jacinta Krueger and their sons Khody, 12, and Owen, 10, went on a trip to Zimbabwe. Before leaving, the boys collected items to donate to school students in the rural Zimbabwian community of Mambanje, working with the Pack for a Purpose program, which encourages travellers to take valued supplies to poorer countries. The family ended up collecting more than 40 kilograms of stationery, with the boys giving talks at Westbourne Grammar School, retirement villages and a sports club to drum up donations. While at a school in Mambanje, Owen noticed that most of the children’s shoes were falling apart. So once back in Australia, the family embarked on a mission to collect footwear to send to Mambanje.

They collected more than 300 pairs of shoes, another 20 kilograms of stationery and several other items donated by community organisations and Wyndham residents. The family-run Krueger Transport Equipment business is also helping to provide “cattle bomas” out of recycled materials to place around livestock at night. They stops lions attacking cattle belonging to African farmers – which, in turn, stops farmers killing the lions preying on the animals. Khody and Owen have raised $2500 through selling chocolates and used toys to help pay shipping costs for a container – full of shoes, stationery, cattle bomas and other items – bound for Zimbabwe. Werribee’s new representatives in State Parliament called yesterday for a united approach to tackling problems of the area. The new Werribee MLA, Dr Ken Coghill, said with the elections over, it was time for a united approach to the community’s problems.

The new University of Technology which will be established in the western suburbs by next year, will cater specifically for students in the West, according to Werribee Councillor John Gibbons. Cr Gibbons, who has been Werribee’s representative in the push for the university, said it would allow students in the western suburbs to get a tertiary education without spending enormous amounts of time and money.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has rejected a controversial proposal to build a car yard on the Princes Highway, opposite the civic centre – and slammed Wyndham council’s support for the project. In his finding, reached on April 22 and released last week, VCAT presiding member Mr John Keaney said he was “very surprised at the lack of information which the council had sought from the applicant”.

Player numbers at the Point Cook soccer club have almost doubled in the past 12 months, but the club is yet to secure a permanent home. The critical shortage of grounds in Point Cook left the club playing in a hall on timber floorboard up until this year, says vice president Dennis Smith.

MY WYNDHAM Friends Holly Brunnbauer and Marie Cunico, from Hoppers Crossing and Truganina, have started a skincare range called facing motherhood. They chat with Alesha Capone. What do you like most about Wyndham? Ms Cunico: I love that there are so many playgrounds and cafes for families to enjoy. Our three favourite places would have to be Werribee Zoo, Little Growling Cafe and Mezzanine Cafe, not just because the kids are entertained, but because coffee is at hand. You became friends through Instagram, can you tell me how that happened? Ms Brunnbauer: We both run our own separate businesses and happened to cross paths on Instagram. One day I jumped on my Insta stories and asked if any local mamas would like to join me on weekly Werribee Zoo outings. Marie rocked up and we had an instant connection. We discovered that we lived close to one another, our kids were the same age and we shared a love for drinking mochas – lots of them. From that point on, we met up at the zoo weekly and chatted all things motherhood – like how many ‘zzzs’ we were getting – or rather, not getting – as second time mums. How long after this did the idea for your business come about? Ms Brunnbauer: About four months after our first zoo meet-up, the idea of creating skincare specifically for tired and sore mums, popped into my head. Marie is an established expert in all things beauty and skincare. She’s worked in the industry for years refining her skills as a skincare formulator. I DM’d Marie about the idea and she was immediately excited about partnering on this.

What have you enjoyed about developing the facing motherhood range? Ms Cunico: I love the science side. Getting my geek on when it comes to researching which ingredients will help skin concerns that mums are faced with. The best part is the glowing reviews we’re receiving from mums about the

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a Balkan beauty in Ardeer A Balkan restaurant, affiliated to a soccer club, in Ardeer – perfect for a CTS adventure. Balkan Grill is located in the clubrooms of Westgate Sindjelic FC and is just a few weeks old when we – myself, Bennie and Nat – pay a dinner visit. Balkan Grill is the brainchild of Danilo Majmunovic. He’s an experienced chef who’s cooked all over Australia. And now he’s set up shop in Ardeer – and we reckon that’s a smart move. It’s not like there’s a lot of competition in this rather lovely residential backwater. And the prices hit the CTS sweet spot – a few things over $20, but not many. Nat goes with the cevapi u slanini ($20) – Danilo’s cevapi wrapped in bacon and served with chopped onion on a “Sarajevo somun” roll. Nat likes his cevapi plenty, accompanying them with a side serve of good fries ($3.50). Bennie selects gurmanska pljeskavica – 285 grams of homemade minced pork and beef, seasoned with secret ingredients, filled with triple smoked ham and cheese ($20). Again, this is superb meat and Bennie loves it. The cheese and ham really is top-grade stuff. Bennie, too, gets a side of chips with his meat offering – and also a side of Balkan Grill’s cabbage salad ($2). He gives the Balkan Grill version a hefty two thumbs up. I order the mixed grill ($28) – and to be honest, I’m not quite sure what the hell I was thinking. This half-kilogram vegetarian’s

In fact, better to think of it as a share platter for two – and at $14 each, that’s a dead-set bargain. As well as slight variations of the meat deals ordered by Nat and Bennie, it also features BBQ sausages (rostiljska kobasica), pork neck medallion and dimljena vesalica (smoked pork tenderloin). The meat is served with kajmak (a sort of creamed feta), ajvar (red pepper relish) and cabbage salad. It’s all very good. There’s a final delicious surprise in store for us at Balkan Grill. Finding Balkan grilled fare at an Ardeer soccer club is thoroughly wonderful, of course. But finding all that AND that the chef also creates all his own desserts – including cakes and baklava – is superbly shocking. Bennie nods enthusiastically during his consumption of Danilo’s Ferrero Rocher cake. The price is $4.50. Gosh.

Williamstown High School has been attending the WRICA Expo for many years. Since 2015, in the role of Pathways and Transition Leader, I have been taking our whole Year 12 cohort to the event. SPORT Jenkins steamrolls opposition By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Devils import Alisia Jenkins was nigh on unstoppable in a 109-62 victory over Whittlesea Pacers in the Big V basketball women’s state championship at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night. Jenkins produced a performance that was befitting of the special occasion at Ballan Road as the club held its annual Pink Night charity event for the McGrath Foundation. Devils coach Reece Potter said the crowd was up to four times bigger than a usual Saturday night game and expects some of those fans to return again after Jenkins and the team played an exciting brand of basketball. “Without doubt, it was our biggest crowd – three or four times the usual crowd,” Potter said. “Hopefully we can encourage those people to come back and watch us more because our team put on a pretty good performance.” Jenkins stole the show for the Werribee Devils. The American claimed the Mel Logan Medal for best-on-court. It was simply a no-contest. Jenkins did all her damage in quick time, dropping 35 points in just 26 minutes. The efficiency of Jenkins is what impressed the most. She scored on 15 of her 18 field goal attempts and went five-from-five from the free throw line. Not content with her impact as a scorer, Jenkins got to work on the defensive end, reeling in 11 rebounds to go with four steals. “She was really good, particularly on the defensive end of the floor, which doesn’t show up quite as much on the stat sheet,” Potter said. “We ended up moving her on to their import Rachel Bell because she lit us up a little bit early, but Alisia used her size to … rein her back in. “On the offensive end, it was a pretty flawless performance.” Jenkins has shown little sign of weakness since her arrival at Werribee. “She’s such a dynamic player, so athletic, quick, skilful. “She’s quite disciplined for a player that talented. “She takes the most high percentage play each time and you see that in her percentages.” It was not all about Jenkins. One of the most pleasing aspects for Werribee was the play of Sam Moodie and Jessica Slade off the bench. Potter has preached the strength of his depth and it was on show in the Pacers pummelling. Moodie had 13 points and 13 rebounds in 21

minutes, while Slade had 10 points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes. “They came off the bench and contributed well scoring, defence and leadership wise, which was good to see,” Potter said. Starters Sarah Elsworthy and Alexyz Vaioletama posted solid lines for Werribee. Elsworthy had 19 points, seven assists and six rebounds, while Vaioletama had 15 points and seven rebounds. Werribee has won five games on the trot to improve to 6-1 and move into second on the ladder ahead of a clash with Hume City Broncos at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night at 6.30pm. In men’s state championship, Werribee Devils won a double overtime thriller 127-126 over Blackburn Vikings at Eagle Stadium on Sunday. Konor Kulas was magnificent for the Devils with 41 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Jacob Formosa was the other dominant Devil with 29 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Darcy Daniels (17), David Shepard (16) and Tyrone Remy (12) reached double figures in the points. It was Werribee’s third win of the season and second in three weeks. The Devils will be looking to maintain the rage when they host Hume City Broncos on Saturday night.

Werribee Districts coach Chris Gilham has lauded his players for their spirited effort in a grind-it-out three-point win over Spotswood in Western Region Football League division 1 at McLean Reserve on Saturday. The Tigers have endured their fair share of heartbreak at that away venue in recent seasons. But this time around, they got to sing the club song in the shadow of the West Gate Freeway. “We haven’t been able to hold on in that situation at that ground in the last couple of years,” Gilham said. “I thought our blokes showed a lot of character.” Werribee Districts went into the half-time break staring an 11-point deficit in the face. The Tigers put the foot on the accelerator in the third quarter, banging on five unanswered goals to lead by 23 points at three-quarter time. In that period, Will Sullivan had a big influence in the ruck, while Nick Buykx and Rhyce Prismall were key drivers on the ball. Last season, the Tigers were up by 15 points at three-quarter time, but Spotswood finished in a flurry to win by four points. In 2017, the Tigers led by 21 points going into the last

quarter, but went down by two points. So it should come as no surprise Gilham was not counting his chickens at three-quarter time. The Tigers were eager to avoid slipping into a defensive mindset, so they went in search of a crucial goal, one that would take the game out of reach of the Woodsmen. A nice set shot goal from Lachlan Rainbow did just that, with the Woodsmen kicking the last three goals of the game and finishing less than a kick down. Dillon Viojo-Rainbow, who set up the game-clinching goal with an assist to his brother, was cool as cucumber. “He doesn’t make a bad decision and his execution is really good,” Gilham said. Daniel Schibeci played a strong captain’s game across half-back for Werribee Districts. “He leads from the front every week,” Gilham said. “His ball use was unbelievable. It was tricky conditions, very windy, but he did not waste a kick.” Prismall was the other Werribee Districts leader to step up in the midfield. “You go away from home, you play in tight

games, you need your leaders to step up and he was super,” Gilham said. Werribee Districts will go into the interleague break with a 4-1 record – equal with ladder leaders Deer Park and Altona. Elsewhere in division 1, Hoppers Crossing went down by 20 points to Deer Park. Point Cook was no match for Altona, going down by 123 at Saltwater Reserve. In division 2, a fast start was the key to Wyndhamvale’s 24-point win over a never-give-in Point Cook Centrals. Manor Lakes claimed a hard-fought 22-point win over West Footscray. In division 3, Wyndham Suns have hit their groove under new coach Dean Cachia, winning their past two games, including Saturday’s 177-point belting of North Sunshine. Flawless Glen Orden is still top of the ladder after an 85-point win over Braybrook, while Tarneit is just behind on percentage after making it five-from-five with a 37-point win over Albanvale. Balla bounces back from injury to take Oceania belt Western suburbs boxer Qamil Balla has claimed his second World Boxing Association Oceania title. The latest title belt is the most precious for Balla, who claimed the WBA Oceania super lightweight division with a win by TKO over Indonesia’s Hero Tito at Grand Star Receptions in Altona North last week. The previous title Balla won in 2017 – the WBA Oceania lightweight division – was an interim belt, but now he has a title belt all to his own after his eye-catching victory over Tito. “This was a full title, whereas the last one was an interim, so it never feels like the full thing when you’re the interim champion,” Balla said. “This one is the proper champion belt and it feels real good.” Balla had not been in a professional fight for 14 months. In his last serious bout, he broke a knuckle and had to give it time to heal.

It was almost a case of out of sight, out of mind for Balla, because once he returned he struggled to line up a big bout that he desired. Eventually Tito answered the call and they locked horns for the Oceania title. Balla admitted he had concerns over whether his knuckle injury would have an impact on his boxing. “I was just happy the fists still worked,” he said with a chuckle. Balla is 29 and a much smarter boxer than he once was. His experience in the ring has led to him being a little more calculated and a little less cavalier in the way he approaches a fight. While he would not shy away from brawling in the ring, he prefers to let his fast feet and smart tactics win the way. “It’s just dancing in the ring to be honest,” Balla said. “I can turn on that fiery redhead from Hoppers Crossing any time I want and I

know he’s a bit of a fan favourite, but it’s just that it makes the night a bit harder for me and my family because I come home with a bunch of cuts and bruises. “It can also turn it into a 50-50 fight because it’s boxing at the end of the day and everyone can punch and you can get clipped by a nice one, so I stick to my game plan, box smart, allow one big shot, then I can go in and finish and that’s exactly what I did. “It was one of those times where the game plan spookily actually worked 100 per cent.” Balla was thrilled to win on home soil. The Altona North resident lives a stone’s throw away from Grand Star Receptions and treats it like his home venue. Tiger skipper’s big night By Lance Jenkinson A bittersweet season has ended on an individual high for Werribee Cricket Club captain-coach Tim O’Brien. O’Brien has taken out the Tigers’ top honour for 2018-19, clinching the Kirk Norton Medal for club champion in a tight vote count. The top order batsman polled 16 votes to finish one ahead of opening batsmen Matt Dean after a consistent season in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. O’Brien said it was an honour to be recognised during a big occasion for the club at Chirnsides by the River in Werribee on Saturday night. “It was fantastic to win it again,” he said. “We had a lot of people there, so it was a good night for the club.” O’Brien believes the medal would have gone to Dean had he not missed four games. “If he had’ve played all the games, he would’ve got the result,” O’Brien said. “It just shows how good a year he had – missing four games and only finishing a vote behind me. He had a fantastic season.” O’Brien brought heaps to the table for Werribee last summer. He consistently performed with the bat, scoring 452 runs at an average of 37.7. “To be able to get starts in a fair few games this year was pleasing,” O’Brien said. O’Brien was more than handy with his spin, taking 14 wickets at 20.3. In the field, he took nine catches. He might have reached the 20-wicket mark had it not been for a shoulder injury late in the season. “They seemed to come out a bit better this year,” O’Brien said of his bowling. “Unfortunately, I had that shoulder injury that put me out of bowling for about four games … it would’ve been great to bowl in most games. “I ended up bowling about 70 overs this year.” O’Brien was not totally satisfied from a personal or a team perspective. He was disappointed that his 80 in round two was his top score for the summer. He reached 50 three times and 40 on two other occasions – opportunities he believes he could have grasped to go on to make centuries. His semi-final contribution of 13 was a source of frustration, too. “I was unable to get to 100 this year, so that was probably the disappointing fact – that I wasn’t able to go on and get big scores,” he said. “You want to make your runs in the finals and to miss out in the finals was the disappointing one.” From a team point of view, O’Brien was over the moon about Werribee’s home-and-away season. The Bees are licking their wounds after a 4-2 defeat to Goulburn Valley Suns at John McEwen Reserve on Saturday night. Sam McCall and Jake Butler got on the scoresheet for the Bees, but Alou Kuol scored an incredible four goals for the Suns. The Bees advanced in the FFA Cup with a 2-0 win over Brunswick City after goals to Carlin Feely and Julyan Collett.
