A Tarneit family is hoping to help spread awareness of a rare disorder. Nine-year-old Makayla was diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) when just a few weeks old. Common characteristics of the rare non-genetic disorder include small hands and feet, small stature, low body mass and hypotonia (weak muscles) at birth. It is believed that about one in 10,000 to 20,000 children are born with the syndrome. Makayla’s family is urging Wyndham residents to wear orange on Go Orange for PWS day on May 31. Makayla’s mum, Ashley Hebden, said her daughter was born five weeks premature. “She was born at the Werribee Mercy Hospital and two days later was transferred to the Royal Children’s Hospital,” Ms Hebden said. “She ended up spending five weeks there – and that is when she was diagnosed with PWS.” Ms Hebden said that a doctor at the Royal Children’s referred the family to the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association of Victoria and Prader-Willi Syndrome Australia. “They have been really good,” Ms Hebden said. “They advocate for families and anyone with loved ones who have Prader-Willi Syndrome.” Go Orange for PWS day is held annually to raise awareness and fundraise for Prader-Willi Syndrome Australia. Hunt for street attackers By Alesha Capone Poles or batons have been used to threaten victims in a series of street robberies in Wyndham recently. Police are investigating an armed robbery in Tarneit last Wednesday, in which two men were confronted by a group of four to six males and threatened with a pole. The incident follows two robberies and two armed robberies during the weekend of

April 20-21 – two in Tarneit, one in Williams Landing and one in Point Cook. Detective Sergeant Paul Gilmour said police believed the incidents could be linked. He said the latest incident, on April 24, occurred near the intersection of Tarneit and Wickford roads, in Tarneit. A group of four to six males, who were described as African in appearance, threatened two men with a pole and demanded their phones and other property before fleeing the

scene. Neither of the victims was injured. Detective Sergeant Gilmour said the other robberies all followed a similar description. He said the incidents usually took place during the evening, in residential streets. About 7.30pm on Sunday, April 21 near Baden Powell Drive in Tarneit, a man was punched while a group stole his phone. He sustained minor injuries. Wyndham police Inspector Marty Allison

said police believed there could potentially be “two to three groups of young people” involved in the robberies. He said extra police patrols had been activated across Wyndham. “We’ve deployed extra resources into these areas, as a preventative measure and so hopefully people can go about their normal business,” Inspector Allison said. Hundreds caught in road blitz By Esther Lauaki Wyndham racked up the fourth highest number of traffic offences in the state during an Easter long weekend road blitz. Speeding, unregistered vehicles and not wearing a seatbelt made up the majority of the total 426 offences detected in Wyndham during the five-day operation. Brimbank topped the state for the number of offences (1025) committed during Victoria Police’s Operation Nexus, followed by Moreland (1009) and Whitehorse (588).

Point Cook Wildlife Care has condemned the shooting of three birds with an air rifle. The wildlife group last week posted on its Facebook page, that it has taken in two magpies and a raven in the past six months, all with air rifle injuries. The group said it has reported the matter to police and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP). According to the post, the raven was found in the vicinity of Tom Roberts Boulevard, while the magpies were both found in the Point Cook Town Centre, around Neptune Drive and Central Park Avenue. The post said that all three of the birds had to be euthanised because of their injuries. “To the absolute idiot who is shooting our local wildlife please note you are in breach of the Wildlife Act which carries severe penalties – possibly both fines and imprisonment,” the Facebook post stated. “We’re calling on the community to be aware and if you hear or see anything call 000. “Harming wildlife is a criminal offence under the Wildlife Act.” Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. A Hoppers Crossing Lotto shop, known as one of the luckiest in the state, has struck gold again. Target Lotto, which is owned by husband-and-wife team Carlo and Christine Addamo, sold two shares in an Oz Lotto syndicate that scored a division one prize valued at $15 million last week. Nine outlets across Melbourne sold shares in the syndicate. Mr Addamo said 20 winners would receive $754,973.22 each.

Tech test time in Japan Ben Micallef is excited about representing Australia in the Maztech international final later this month. The Trauganina tech whiz, who works at Werribee Mazda, will fly to Japan for the international final of the competition on May 22. The competition tests the skills of Mazda technicians from around the world. Of the 244 technicians who entered the Australian section of the competition, 32 progressed to the state finals and eight to the national finals. Out of those eight, just two, including Mr Micallef, 33, were selected to represent Australia at the international finals. Mr Micallef said the national finals, held in Mulgrave, required the competitors to

demonstrate technical skills such as engine testing, diagnosing faults and performing repairs on vehicles and car components. He said the competitors were given 20 minutes to complete each task, as the judges wanted to see how they performed under â– pressure. â€œIt was the first time Iâ€™ve ever done anything like this,â€? Mr Micallef said. â€œI was probably more nervous than anything, and a bit excited.â€? Mr Micallef began his career in the automotive industry at the age of 18, working at a Tullamarine workshop before starting at Werribee Mazda.

Starting GRID for musicians A program that provides support to emerging musicians who live, study or work in outer suburban areas is heading to Wyndham. The GRID Series – which stands for Grass Roots Indie Development – is aimed at helping musicians with limited access to studios, producers and industry knowledge. Eight Wyndham musicians will be selected to take part in the program, which will include a weekend of one-on-one mentoring with music industry professionals, a song development session with an established songwriter, a fully-produced track recorded at Box Hill Institute’s Sing Sing East studios and a single launch showcase. One of the GRID Series’ founders, Ariel Blum, said the program began about six years ago. “We’re blown away every time we run the project, with the enthusiasm and energy which emerging artists bring to the studio and their creativity,” he said. “If you’re thinking of applying or are a bit nervous that you don’t have a proper recording or that the demo of the recording you want to send us isn’t of a level of quality that you would like, still apply.” Applications are open until May 17 for artists living, working or studying in Wyndham. Bogan-fest travels west Logie award-winning entertainer Paul Fenech is bringing a show billed as a “bourbon-fuelled, bogan subwoofer bonanza of comedy” to Wyndham. A familiar face to fans of the television programs Fat Pizza, Housos, Bogan Hunters and Swift and Shift Couriers, Fenech is a comedian, actor, writer, director and producer. His latest show, titled Pauly’s FAT PIZZA & HOUSOS Deadly Down Under, is coming to the Plaza Tavern later this month. The show will include unseen footage from Fenech’s television series Deadly Down Under, which screened last year, in addition Under to crowd games and parody songs. Although well-known for his television appearances – including Housos, which won Most Outstanding Light Entertainment Program at the Logies in 2014 – Fenech is also a filmmaker, whose movies have received prizes at the Tropfest Film Festival and St Kilda Comedy Film Festival. Parts of Point Cook, Truganina, Tarneit and Werribee have been named among the top 20 building and population “hotspots” in the state, in a new report. The Housing Industry Association report included a list of hotspots which recorded more than $200 million in residential building work being approved in 2017-18 and an annual population growth rate in excess of the national rate of 1.6 per cent. According to the report, Point Cook east’s estimated residential population increased by 10.6 per cent, to 16,025 people, in the 12 months to June last year. Truganina’s 9.5 per cent growth increased it’s population to 30,249 people; Tarneit’s population rose by 9.2 per cent to 43,403 people; and Werribee west increased by 9 per cent to 14,315. Point Cook east had $250 million in building works approved, Truganina had more than $251 million approved, Tarneit more than $387 million approved and Werribee west more than $208 million approved. The Rockbank-Mount Cottrell area topped the HIA list with more than $224 million in building approvals and a population increase of 59.4 per cent, to reach 6455 residents. Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV) chief executive Gil King said the outer suburbs “have been the standout performers in recent times and that is set to continue as our population is forecast to increase”. “The REIV’s latest median house price data shows that properties in Tarneit and Point Cook continue to secure good prices,” Mr King said. “In the March 2019 quarter, Tarneit’s median house price increased 5.6 per cent to $565,000 while Point Cook’s jumped 4.7 per cent to $665,000.”

Business tainted by association By Esther Lauaki The owner of a Geelong trailer business says he is copping backlash after Hoppers Crossing Trailers shut up shop. Customers and suppliers who paid thousands of dollars for trailers and parts have been left in the lurch after the Hoppers Crossing manufacturer packed up and disappeared from its Industrial Avenue site in late March. was a dealer for Hoppers Crossing Trailers, told Star Weekly his business has been wrongly implicated in dealings with the failed manufacturer. He said he had been fielding calls and copped abuse from customers trying to recuperate their losses. “This is affecting my business,” Mr Singh

said. “I am not the same owner of Hoppers Crossing Trailers.” Mr Singh said he bought 32 trailers from Hoppers Crossing and is selling them on. “They still owe me six trailers … I am also a victim.” Mr Singh said police and VicRoads had also been in contact with him last week. Four people contacted Star Weekly in recent weeks claiming they were up to $6000 out of pocket for trailers they had not received and their inquiries to Hoppers Crossing Trailers were unanswered.

Hoppers Crossing Trailers, which sells, repairs, hires and manufactures trailers, cleared out up to 200 units of stock and abandoned its yard with little notice to customers or suppliers. A post on the company’s Facebook page on April 2 indicated the business was in trouble. “We’re facing some problems, due to which we are unable to open our physical location,” the post said. “Kindly be patient and we’ll be right back.” Star Weekly’s attempts to make contact on four phone numbers and via Facebook pages of the company were unsuccessful.

Hangar doors open The restoration of a B-24 Liberator bomber in Werribee has been a labour of love for volunteers for more than two decades. The rare World War II aircraft, said to be the only one left in the Southern hemisphere, is at the heart of the B-24 Liberator Memorial Restoration Fund museum which is holding an open day on May 5. Restoration fund president Lyn Gorman said the open day is an opportunity for people to “get a sense of the scale of the aircraft restoration project”. “We’re often told by people that they’ve driven past and they’ve never stopped in to see what was inside that big green hangar,” Ms Gorman said. “It’s surprising that people don’t know what we’re about. “B-24 Liberator bomber long-range aircrafts were used by the Americans and Australians during WWII.

“Our RAAF acquired 287 of them during the war and they were really important, particularly in the war in the Pacific. “They were nearly all scrapped by 1945.” Ms Gorman said the group would also welcome more volunteers to come aboard. “Some volunteers are well into their 90s,” she said. “There is a lot of work to be done and more restoration projects happening.” Details: www.b24australia.org.au Esther Lauaki

Sod turned on catalyst project By Alesha Capone An official ceremony signalled the beginning of works on a 12-storey hotel, retail and office hub being constructed in Werribee. Representatives from Wyndham council, the Pelligra Group, the InterContinental Hotels Group and Werribee MP Tim Pallas on Monday visited the site on the corner of Synnot Street and Duncans Road. Owned by Wyndham council, the site is one of four public carparks which will be

transformed into high-rise complexes as part of the Werribee “Catalyst” project. Mayor Mia Shaw said the council has entered into a public-private partnership with Pelligra for the $49.5 million Synnot Street project.

Cr Shaw said the development – which will include a 150-room Holiday Inn, retail areas, office space and an education centre – would become a “lasting legacy” in Werribee. It will also include 362 parking spaces, 167 of which will be public. Cr Shaw said the future hotel would give visitors to Werribee more accommodation options to choose from, within the town centre. “Wyndham is currently experiencing significant tourism growth, and the

introduction of international flights to Avalon Airport will see these numbers continuing to rise,” she said. “This hotel will add to the accommodation available for visitors to stay in, while also boosting our local economy.” The hotel development is set to open in October next year. Independent analysis has found the Catalyst project will boost Wyndham’s economy by $465 million and deliver 1600 jobs, through construction and ongoing employment.

A room with a view A Werribee South boatshed with impressive beach views is making waves on the real estate market. Jonathon Bird from Barry Plant Werribee said he was excited to offer a licence for the boatshed, at 25 Campbells Cove, for sale. “It’s unique, it’s waterfront and it’s perfect – just look at it, what’s not to get excited about?” he said. Mr Bird said the boatshed, as with most boatsheds in Melbourne, is on Crown land. A 10-year rolling lease to use the site is being offered for sale. The licence – plus the boatshed furniture, a recently-installed fireplace, a solar panel with inverter, a 12V power supply and refrigerator – are being offered for sale for $109,000 to $119,000. “One [another Werribee South boatshed] recently sold for $145,000 so this property is amazing value,” Mr Bird said. He said his favourite aspects of the boatshed

were its isolation and the beach views. “With the double doors open to the sea, the view is like an ever-changing tapestry,” he said. He said the Barry Plant Werribee office had received a “lot of calls in relation to the property”. Licence conditions mean the Campbells Cove boatshed cannot be used for permanent or overnight accommodation. “However … napping is allowed and it is not uncommon to see many people very late into the nights enjoying warm evenings on the water’s edge there,” Mr Bird said. Community steps up family care By Esther Lauaki The Point Cook community has rallied to help a family in the “toughest time of their lives”. Josh Erikson is in the final stages of a long battle with glioblastoma multiforme – a form of brain cancer. The community last week answered a call for volunteers when they learned that Josh’s mother, Donna Erikson-Rigby, had to relocate the family because the house they lived in was being sold. The 17-year-old and his family have experienced a tougher life than many. Josh was born profoundly deaf, was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2005 and beat it

after a bone marrow transplant from his eldest brother. He remained cancer free for years, but in 2016 was diagnosed with a GM tumour, for which there is no cure. A fortnight ago, Hanna Gale rallied Point Cook residents for a working bee to clean carpets, mow lawns and help with heavy lifting at the Erikson-Rigby’s house. “Josh is in hospice with brain cancer and his beautiful family needed to move home during such a difficult time,” Ms Gale said. “It’s so heartwarming to see our community come together to help a family in need.” Mrs Erikson-Rigby, who keeps Josh’s friends, family and supporters updated through the Mr

Braveheart-Team Josh Facebook page, said her son was very weak and unable to speak. “My heart is heavy as once we start sedation that’s final, I’m torn, every decision in Josh’s life I’ve always known what to do but this is on a next level,” Mrs Erikson-Rigby said. “Sweet beautiful Joshy, how my heart aches terribly. “We are going to start palliative sedation as he is distressed and cannot communicate with us. “I just want my cheeky, full-of-life boy back.” The community has stepped up to help Josh Erikson and his family. Susie Q a hit at boxing club World-champion professional boxer Susie Q Ramadan visited young boxing students at a Werribee club last week. Ramadan, Australia’s first woman to win both the International Boxing Federation (IBF) Bantamweight World Title and WBC World Bantamweight Title, visited the Wyndham PCYC (Police Citizens Youth Club) last Thursday. It was the club’s bi-monthly interclub sparring and development day. PCYC head coach Vince Marino introduced Ramadan to the young boxers present. Marino, an accredited boxing coach with Boxing Australia, runs the club – which is supported by community organisations, government groups, Victoria Police and local businesses – to help underprivileged and at-risk youth gain confidence and life skills. Ramadan said the level of skill she witnessed among the young boxers at the PCYC interclub day was “very high” and congratulated Marino on the event. Ramadan also offered advice to many of the young boxers after she watched their sparring sessions.

Writing awards Residents with a talent for storytelling have been invited to enter the Wyndham Writing Awards. The competition, held by Wyndham council, will have four categories: short story, graphic short story, flash story and poetry. Wyndham’s arts, culture and heritage portfolio holder, Cr Tony Hooper, said that shortlisted works would be published in the Wyndham Writing Awards Anthology 2019. He said that this year’s writing awards would also include two guest panelists – Victorian poet, novelist and short story writer Adam Ford, and illustrator and comic-maker Jess Kitty Parker. Wyndham council will soon be using cutting-edge technology to keep track of how its recreation resources are being used. A new project will use sensor-based technology and machine algorithms to capture, record and analyse recreation facility usage. Wyndham city economy, innovation and liveability director Peter McKinnon said the project was in its planning stage “with the intention to identify and begin installation of a pilot site early in 2019 to 2020 financial year”. “The pilot site will help refine the solution before a larger scale roll-out across the city over the next 12 months,” he said. The Smart Sports Field Planning, Monitoring and Management pilot project is being supported by a $493,000 grant from the federal government’s Smart Cities and Suburbs Program. Mr McKinnon said the collected data would be used to facilitate better planning and alignment between playing surfaces and community expectations surrounding which sports are being played and which are most popular. “With this data, council may be able to increase usage hours or open portions of the field to maximise usage, increasing the social benefits these facilities provide,” he said. “Data will be made publicly available so that residents can see if a field is in use before leaving to go play.” Mr McKinnon said information collected by the project would also lead to improved sports management planning and resource allocation and more efficient maintenance. “This type of information has never been available to local government,” he said.

Wyndham dog owners will be running with the pack at the Million Paws walk this month. Point Cook’s Angela Infantino and her great dane Labrador, Molly, are inviting animal lovers to be part of their team at Victoria’s largest dog walking event to help raise money for the RSPCA. The walk will be held at Albert Park on Sunday, May 19, with more than 12,000 people expected to participate. RSPCA chief executive Liz Walker said every dog lover could play a role in the fight against animal cruelty while enjoying a fun day out. “Every year we look forward to the Million Paws Walk – and every year it exceeds our expectations,” she said. “It’s inspiring to see the community band together and walk towards a future free from animal cruelty.” The Albert Park event will feature live entertainment, food trucks, veterinary advice, dog washes and fun exhibits. Attendees will be able to enter pet dog competitions such as Best Rescue Story. Money raised through ticket sales, online fundraising, merchandise and competitions will be used to support RSPCA Victoria’s work, including caring for more than 20,000 animals that come through its shelters each year. Full uniforms for Half Battery The Werribee Half Battery will keep the stories of Wyndham veterans alive for future generations thanks to a state grant. The Victorian era re-enactment group was granted $10,390 in state funding to procure new ceremonial uniforms. Werribee Half Battery depicts the Victorian Horse Artillery which operated in the colony of Victoria in the late 1800s. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said remembering the stories of our veterans was an important mark of respect. “Wyndham has many veterans who have served us proud and we’re ensuring their stories are never forgotten,” Ms Connolly said. “The Werribee Half Battery is an important part of the Wyndham community and it is great to see local history kept alive.” The grant was awarded as part of the Victoria Remembers Minor Grant Program, which funds educational and commemorative activities that honour Australia’s war and service history. The funding will allow the Werribee Half Battery to provide a range of sizes of uniform jackets for use by more young people in events that depict colonial military history. Here’s cheers to beer By Esther Lauaki Lovers of Indian pale ale will be heading to Hopheads in Point Cook in celebration of the Great Beer Festival. The week-long festival, starting from May 10, is made up of more than 300 events across Victoria and attracts thousands of people in appreciation of the best brewers and beer businesses in the country. Hopheads co-owners Adrian Chong, his wife Wai Lee Yong and Ryan Cochraine will pay homage to their favourite Indian pale ales at the flagship Point Cook store and Altona store. “IPA is a style of beer – one of the first interesting styles of beers that got the popularity of craft beers rolling,” Mr Chong said. “Historically, when the English used to ship beer to India, they used to find that the beer would go off. “Hops is a natural preservative, so they added more hops to keep the beer from turning rancid. “That’s why Indian pale ales are a full-flavoured beer, almost on the bitters side. Police probe Hoppers Crossing fires Police are investigating a series of suspicious fires in Hopper Crossing, last week. A Victoria Police spokesperson said there were fires at three reserves, on Woodville Park Drive, Heaths Road and Rosella Avenue and near a Warringa Crescent supermarket between 8pm and 10pm on Monday, April 22. The spokesperson said the fires were all “small grassfires” which caused no damage to property. There was also a “small fire” lit on a playground swing at Woodville Park Drive, as well as a blaze on Derrimut Road, Werribee just before 10.40pm. CFA crews attended the fires. “Police are investigating whether the fires are linked and appeal for anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” the Victoria Police spokesperson said. In Victoria, lighting rubbish o on fire in a public place, or leaving an open fire unattended, can result in an offender being sentenced to a maximum of 12 months imprisonment. MY WYNDHAM Ben Goodwin is a gardener assistant in the horticulture team at Werribee Open Range Zoo. He chats with Star Weekly.

I am from Werribee and reside in Westleigh Gardens. I love the avenue of eucalyptus trees that greet you when you are coming in to Werribee along the Princes Highway. Westleigh Gardens also has a great community, which is good knowing that there are many people in the area looking out for others and trying to keep the area as safe as possible. I’ve lived in Werribee my whole life, almost 24 years. Werribee has changed massively in this time, transforming from a small country town to a miniature city. How long have you been working at Werribee Open Range Zoo? I have been working at Werribee Zoo for five years, three of those years I was undertaking my apprenticeship in horticulture, which then led to the role of qualified horticulturist. I have been involved in gardening almost my whole life. My dad had a change of career into horticulture in my early years of life and always involved me in any work around our garden and getting out into nature. I have been lucky enough to have had a great respect for the environment and all things entailed in it since I was young. My father was also lucky enough to undertake his horticulture work experience at Werribee Zoo around 2001. Dad was a member of the Werribee River Association, so I would tag along to their planting days and a few catch and release programs for animals such as platypus and microbats. In 2014, it had been a few months since completing year 12 VCE and the opportunity

came up for a horticulture apprenticeship at Werribee Zoo, so I jumped at it and was lucky enough to be successful. What do you enjoy about your job? I enjoy the diversity of the role, and that every day you could be doing something completely different. Being at a workplace that strives to achieve a future rich in flora and fauna is a great feeling and is aligned with my personal values. Growing and harvesting the food for the animals is a pretty rewarding job, too. Amongst many other things, part of my role in the horticulture team is to maintain the grounds and exhibits around the zoo while keeping it looking as best as possible. I have been lucky enough to be involved in fairly large-scale projects in the Browse Plantation expansion, including irrigation systems and planning for the future browse requirements. Tell me about the Browse Plantation. We are lucky enough at Werribee Zoo to have enough space to grow and supply a large amount of food for animals from Werribee and Melbourne Zoo. These mostly consist of branches harvested for animals such as koalas, gorillas, giraffes and many of our other animal species we have at the zoo. Our plantations are spread out across approximately 19 hectares. We have over 17,000 productive browse trees and are working to add an additional 10,000 trees in the very near future. Many of these trees consist of various species of eucalyptus, acacia and exotic species such as elms, bamboo and tree lucerne.

Tune in for local talent Two musicians will be hitting all the right notes when they perform at Cafe QB in Werribee this month. Nick Barker and Anna Oliphant Wright will take to the stage as part of a program which aims to give young local music artists a chance to showcase their talents. Oliphant Wright, 19, is a singer and song-writer, whose genres include alt country, blues and indie folk. In contrast, Barker has been playing, recording and touring for more than three decades. The live music program being run at Café QB is an initiative of the Quantin Binnah Community Centre. Rebecca Tucker is a community centre staff

member helping to organise the live music program. She said the project has been well received by artists and audiences. “Music has a powerful means of connection, it offers a strong sense of belonging, and as this project continues to demonstrate, it brings community together across age and culture,” Ms Tucker said. “Our audiences have consisted of 18 to 60 year-olds, it is overwhelming to see a room full of people brought together by music.” The show, at 8pm on Friday, May 24, will be held at Cafe QB, 61 Thames Boulevard, Werribee. A group of about 80 Housing Commission home buyers of Werribee have formed a committee to protest against what they consider to be exorbitant rates of interest on their home purchase. The meeting was told that the interest rates after a recent increase would mean that a $35,000 home, paid off over 45 years, would total $136,000.

Werribee police fear drugs have become the municipality’s biggest problem following a $10,000 drug bust at a Laverton house last week. Werribee CIB detectives, Laverton police and the dog squad uncovered 120 foils of heroin and a small amount of Indian hemp after raiding the Gordon Ave house.

Wyndham could reap major benefits from Melbourne’s Docklands development, the project’s director, Mr Bill Chandler, has claimed. The project’s focus on Port Phillip Bay and the redevelopment of Spencer Street railway station will turn the spotlight on the municipality, he said.

Work on a $25 million expansion of Werribee Plaza shopping centre in Hoppers Crossing could begin as early as next year. The project was referred to the priority development panel by the State Government last Wednesday.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gives the thumbs up to a cafe with class Bruger Address: 487 Barkly Street, Footscray he expects and welcomes at various Thai or Vietnamese places. Still good, though! My brisket rice bowl ($18) is something of a masterpiece. The ingredients – pilaf rice, brisket, coriander chutney, pine nuts and cumin “hommus” – are familiar. Yet here they are teamed in a magical way, the contrasting flavours bouncing off each other with tasty glee. Often, when pine nuts are listed, they end up constituting little more than a garnish. Here they play a plentiful and significant role. The brisket is superb – high on smoky flavour, yet distributed through the rice in small pieces. Want to grab some of that great barbecue vibe without going full carnivore? Right here, with this dish, is your solution. I know there’s those who’ll question the prices. But they’re very fair for food of such good quality and the serves are suitably filling for not-too-heavy lunchtime fare.

Our post-kung fu Saturday routine usually runs along the lines spicy Vietnamese, Indian or African food. But today we try something a little different – Bruger, which is just down Barkly from Sims and 501 Receptions. It’s a sister cafe to the nearby West 48 in Essex Street – but it has quite a different feel. The long room is all about high stools and heaps of wood and stone. It’s classy – and perhaps more like a bar than a cafe. We take note of the breakfast options and then ignore them. But the sparks of imagination that show in our lunch meals are in evidence, too, on the breakfast list. Sambal chilli eggs for, example. Or – more hearty – polish sausage with fried egg, gruyere, gherkin relish and kewpie mayo. Bennie enjoys his daily special of eight-hour pork belly on a soba and papaya salad with nam jim dressing ($18.50). He makes special mention of the shredded pork – “very soft”, says he. In addition to the listed ingredients, there’s a stack of bean sprouts and peanuts and a nifty slab of crackling. Salad Boy invariably gives papaya salad and related dishes serious consideration when we’re out and about elsewhere, so that’s why he orders this at Bruger. But while it pleases, it’s fair to record that this cafe outing is notably muted in terms of the sort of tang, zing, sourness, heat and bite

SPORT Werribee loses traction as competitors play catch up Werribee Bears are a long way off reaching their full capacity in the NRL Victoria first grade this season. The Bears have been the powerhouse of the competition in recent years, winning the past three top-flight premierships, but they are yet to reach anywhere near those dizzying heights this campaign. A 36-32 win over newcomers Melton Broncos at Macpherson Park on Saturday drew a lukewarm reaction from Bears coach Curtly Tuala. “We made that game look harder than it seemed,” he said. “It just came down to not playing the football that we usually play and that’s being simple in both attack and defence. “I always look at it from a coach’s perspective and there’s positives and there’s room for improvement, but I tilted more to there being a lot of room for improvement.” Werribee has won three of its opening four matches, but alarm bells were ringing when

While the Bears were undermanned on that day, there were no excuses as the Rabbitohs ran rampant to score nine tries to two. Tuala was looking for a strong reaction from his team against Melton, but while they won, they did not show the desire he was searching for, particularly on the defensive end. “The last two games we’ve conceded 84 points,” Tuala said. “We build our defence before our attack and pride ourselves on it, so conceding that amount of points in the last two games is not something we’re proud of as a playing group. “We’ll make sure we’re a lot more smarter, a lot more active and a lot more ruthless in defence next week.” Captain Sepu Ryder was a strong leader for Werribee. He directed the Bears around the field with actions and through his dialogue with his teammates. Centre Niua Puaka courageously put his

body on the line, while Moko Marr was the top 80-minute performer, muscling up in defence and providing a lift on attack. Devils repel late threat By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Devils are keeping pace with the leading pack in Big V basketball women’s state championship. The Devils had to hold off the fast-finishing Casey Cavaliers for a thrilling 86-84 win at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night. Having led all night, the Devils found themselves trailing with four minutes left. But a pair of field goals from Sarah Elsworthy and a triple from Maxine Allan ensured they wrestled back the lead for their third straight win that keeps them in third place on the ladder. Devils coach Reece Potter lauded his side’s character. “We knew it was going to be a really tough test,” he said. “We jumped out and at one stage were leading by 15 in the second quarter. But we just weren’t able to really build on that and we let them back into the game with a couple of really poor possessions. “They sort of ground us back in the third quarter and early in the fourth and were able to take the lead. “But luckily our group rallied and were able to come away with the win at the end with a couple of big plays.” There were even contributions across the board from the Devils’ starting five. But Elsworthy was the pulse of the unit with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists from the point guard position. She came up big for the Devils at key moments. “She played a massive role,” Potter said. Maxine Allan was both a scoring spark and a defensive menace. She finished with 16 points, including a team-high four three-pointers. Her efforts on the defensive end, including seven steals, were noteworthy. “I thought Maxine Allen was outstanding,” Potter said. “She did a great job defensively and offensively she was real good. “She played a great game and it’s certainly something we want her to build on and see on a regular basis.” Imports Alisia Jenkins and Alexyz Vaioletama were busy. Jenkins had 14 points and nine rebounds, while Vaioletama finished with a double-double 14 points and 10 rebounds. Georgia Tauschke contributed 11 points and six rebounds, including three threes. said. “That’s a testament of our group at the moment – that each player can step up.” Werribee (4-1) will hit the road on Sunday to face McKinnon Cougars (2-3) in what Potter is calling a “danger game” that will require his side to prepare well and go with the right mindset.

In men’s state championship, Werribee Devils had a tough double header weekend, losing both games narrowly. The Devils had a heartbreaking 112-110 loss to Casey Cavaliers on Saturday night at Eagle Stadium, followed by a 93-86 loss to Keilor Thunder at Keilor Basketball Stadium on Sunday.

Jets building for success Western Jets have achieved their best season in the NAB League girls, accruing a second win in a campaign for the first time in their three years in the competition. It has been a slow burn for the Jets to become competitive. They failed to win a game in their first season in 2017 and were victorious just once last season, but they have continued to chip away. The Jets have won two of their past three games and have two more weeks of the season to add to that total. The essence of the NAB League is player development over wins and losses, but Jets coach Zac Read could see how much it has meant for his team to get to sing the song in recent weeks. “We can see the progression and the improvement, but there’s only so many times you can tell the girls they’re improving without getting that W,” Read said. “The wins are for their confidence more than anything … it is important for the girls who are putting the work in that they’re getting that W on the board.” In round six, the Jets could only manage one behind against premiership favourite Geelong Falcons, losing 76-1. In an incredible turnaround, the Jets served up a dose of their own medicine, holding the Tasmania Devils to just one behind, winning 38 to one at Rams Arena on Friday night. Western Jets dominated across their half-back line. Any potential attacking threat from the Devils was stopped by intercept marking Jets captain Elisabeth Georgostathis and Isabelle Pritchard. Georgostathis has been important for the Jets both defensively and offensively. The Western Jets midfield got on top at the key moments with Nikita Wright and Ruby Tripodi hugely influential. Emma Quinn and Jasmine Goodman finished off the job for the Jets with two goals each. Western Jets will take on another 2-5 team in Sandringham Dragons at Warrawee Park on Sunday morning. Warriors bury derby hoodoo By Lance Jenkinson It was one of the last frontiers remaining unconquered by Hoppers Crossing and coach Steven Kretiuk in Western Region Football League division 1. A win on the road against local rivals Werribee Districts had frustratingly eluded the Warriors. That hoodoo came to an end on Anzac Day with the Warriors claiming a 21-point win in the Wyndham blockbuster at Soldiers Reserve. The landmark victory ticked a lot of boxes for Kretiuk. “It was a really good win,” he said. “It’s the first time we’ve beaten them there since they’ve been in the competition. It was obviously a really big day to be involved in, being Anzac Day. “A huge crowd, a pretty big event and probably the best we’ve played for a while, so it was pleasing.” Kretiuk gave the thumbs up to Anzac Day football in the WRFL.

He applauded those in the massive crowd, calling on them to be regular attendees to WRFL matches, not just on special occasions. “That’s what local footy is about,” Kretiuk said. “The crowd and the supporters that were there. It’s a massive step in the right direction for the league. People need to understand that we need that support for every single team in

the competition, week in, week out – not just on big occasions.” Hoppers Crossing secured its second consecutive win on the back of an eight-goal-to-four final quarter. Daniel Riosa was immense for the Warriors, particularly when the game was on the line. The ruck-forward capped a best-afield performance with four goals. Hoppers Crossing’s forward line fired on all cylinders. Daniel Strnak was a livewire small with four goals and there were multiples goals for Brenton Payne (three), Jackson Viola and Brandon Houlihan (two each). It was the defensive work of new recruits Hayden Iannacone and Ethan Henley, along with Nathan Williams, that saved the day for Hoppers Crossing. They had the big jobs curtailing the dangerous Werribee Districts forward line that has caused the Warriors so many headaches over the years. “Those guys don’t get the recognition externally because they’re not high possession winners,” Kretiuk said. “But when you look at

the game as a whole, they’ve done something that we haven’t been able to do for a long time … keep their forwards quiet, so hats off to those guys.” Hoppers Crossing will face another 2-1 side, Spotswood, in a mouth-watering clash at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday. Elsewhere in division 1, Altona overcame Spotswood by 10 points, St Albans came back from 25 down to beat Caroline Springs, Deer Park cruised to a 230-point win over Albion and Sunshine crushed Point Cook by 70. In division 2, Point Cook Centrals had a thrilling one-point win over Manor Lakes and Wyndhamvale stormed to a 116-point victory over North Footscray. In division 3, Wyndham Suns broke through for their first win under new coach Dean Cachia, beating Laverton by 25 points. Glen Orden made it three straight with a 56-point win over Sunshine Heights, while Tarneit continued on its merry way with a 190-point mauling of North Sunshine.

Bees win with less than perfection Werribee City set its standards so high during its six-game win streak at the start of the National Premier League 2 west season that nothing but a replication of that scorching form will satisfy the team’s hierarchy. The Bees secured the points in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Box Hill United – but the victory almost felt flat because of the dour way it was achieved, according to Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini. “It was good to get the win, but we didn’t play very well,” Sabbadini said. “We controlled the game pretty well, but we weren’t clinical like we have been. “I was talking to my assistant coach and said, here we are being upset that we didn’t play well, but we still got the three points. “We set our standards, the players set their standards and we try to play the perfect game. “We set up to do that and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, I guess.” After three weeks without a win in the league, Werribee City is at least back to its winning ways. The Bees returned to form in the FFA Cup on Easter weekend when they produced their best performance of the season in a 3-1 win over top-flight NPL club Green Gully Cavaliers. But they could not produce a carbon copy of that form against lesser opposition in Box Hill United. “Last week against Green Gully, which is a team in a higher division, we were much better,” Sabbadini said. “Whether it was a bit of a come down from that game, I’m not sure. “The defence was solid as always this week, so we gave Box Hill very little. “We were just sloppy with our execution going forward.” Shaun Hodor put Werribee City in front in the 24th minute with his second league goal in as many games. Hodor is starting to turn heads with the power he puts on his shots. “Shaun’s got a pretty thunderous sort of shot,” Sabbadini said. Jake Butler put the finishing touches on the win for Werribee City with a goal in the 90th minute. Butler was played in by Carl Feely to remain the leading scorer for the team with seven league goals. Sabbadini was full of praise for defence-minded players Julyan Collett, David Parkinson and Tyler James. The Centurions got to sing the song for the first time this season after a breakthrough 83-point win over Bell Post Hill at Galvin Park on Saturday. An exhilarating 12-goal-to-two second half made for a serious percentage booster for the Centurions, who desperately needed it after two losses to start the season. The Tigers clawed their way to a 2-1 vwin over Monash University at Werribee Hockey Centre on Saturday. Ross Cowlishaw and Matthew Tivendale found the back of the net for the Tigers. In women’s Vic League 1, Werribee had a comfortable 3-1 win over Monash University. Gina Herbert, Taia Leenstra and Catherine Munro were the Tigers’ scorers.
