An honour to remember By Esther Lauaki Pam Raison always believed she was bound for a life less ordinary. The Werribee resident was among the first four women to graduate from the army reserves in Melbourne in 1981. She served the best part of 28 years in the military as a teacher. Ms Raison will be among hundreds of service men and women at the Werribee RSL sub-branch Anzac Day dawn service on Thursday. “I knew I wanted to join the military when I was young,” Ms Raison said. “I was always an

outdoors kid and I told my mother, ‘I want to be in the army when I grow up’.” Life lead Ms Raison into secondary teaching for six years before she decided to follow her heart and join the military at 25. “I couldn’t see myself sitting at a desk for the rest of my life,” she said. “I happened to come across the army reserves doing officer training. “It was the very first course where the women did exactly the same as the blokes did. “There were four females that graduated and 30 fellas in 1981. “We knew we had to do 120 per cent. You couldn’t use feminism as an excuse for anything.

“Physically we had to work harder because we were smaller. “Nobody tried to pander to us because we were women … we were all equal.” She started out as an intelligence officer at an artillery regiment in Brisbane, spent a year in Perth as a reservist and eventually weaved her passion for education into her army career five years later. Ms Raison said no two days were the same throughout her career – from teaching English and mathematics to troops posted across the globe to studying Indonesian and French abroad. “I met a lot of interesting people,” she said.

“One of the bonuses of teaching those courses was that everyone was thrown into one room and I got to know them as people and not as their nationality. “Watching them interact was one of the highlights. That’s why I stayed in that long.” Ms Raison retired from the military in 2008. An Anzac Day dawn service will be held on April 25, from 6.30am at the Werribee cenotaph at the corner of Station Place and Watton Street, Werribee. Watton Street, between Bridge Street and Comben Drive, will be closed from 4am-7.30am. The Station Place roadway and parking areas will be closed for the same period.

Wyndham releases draft budget By Alesha Capone Wyndham council’s draft budget for 2019-20 includes $139.1 million of capital works. The draft budget, released last week, proposes spending $6.9 million to complete Wyndham Park’s redevelopment and $8.2 million in projects to “reactivate” the Werribee CBD, such as the Bridge Hotel redevelopment. The council also allocated $3.5 million to widen and seal Hacketts Road between Tamworth Grove and Aviation Road, in Point Cook; $500,000 for design work to widen roads

in Little River; and $500,000 to “progress the design” of Ison Road. Mayor Mia Shaw said $250,000 was earmarked to develop “detailed designs” to upgrade the intersection of Point Cook and Sneydes roads, “so that the project is shovel-ready”. Cr Kim McAliney said the designs, which include more lanes and traffic signals, would be completed in the 2019-20 financial year. “This positions us well to work with VicRoads to program the construction as soon as possible,” she said.

Aside from roads, the draft budget includes $7.125 million to design and construct new cells at the municipal tip in Wests Road, Werribee. The budget also proposes spending $3.6 million to complete the Truganina East Integrated Family Learning Centre; $1 million to complete the Wunggurrwil Dhurrung Centre (proposed name) in Wyndham Vale; and $2 million to upgrade The Grange Community Centre in Hoppers Crossing. A further $9.2 million has been dedicated for two facilities, offering early childhood services and other services, in Tarneit and Truganina.

Other draft budget items include $1.74 million to the upgrade the facilities at Galvin Park; $1.236 million for a library in Williams Landing; and $772,000 to “fix” drainage and upgrade carparks at the K Road cliffs. The council has proposed setting the mayoral allowance for 2019-20 at $98,464 and councillor allowances at $30,827. She said her goal was always to engage the best staff to cope with demand for maternity services. “I want a blend of experienced staff and recent graduates who love their work and understand the importance of empathy,” Dr Van Dam said. “One of our biggest challenges is to maintain our midwifery staff. Often our brightest and best choose to have their own families and, of course, we encourage that.”

A principal who was stood down during an investigation into video footage that appeared to show him dragging a pupil along the ground has been re-instated. The Department of Education and Training (DET) investigated the incident, which occurred at Manor Lakes P-12 College in January, after the footage was released publicly earlier this year. Principal Steve Warner was stood down during the investigation. College families recently received a letter from the DET south-west Victoria regional director Wendy Timms saying that Mr Warner will resume his duties as principal at the college from April 23. The letter states: “The investigation found the incident was not handled appropriately and the conduct did not meet the behaviour expected of a principal … I want to assure you that the appropriate action has been taken, including an official reprimand and the principal offering a formal apology to the family affected. “Mr Warner has demonstrated he is sorry for his actions and that he is fully committed to moving the school forward … and ensuring respectful and appropriate support for students, school staff and the community are a priority. “We are confident that he is the best person to lead the college.” The letter states Mr Warner will “seek expert advice from the Independent Office For School Dispute Resolution about restoring the relationships with the school community”. Wyndham’s baby boom is in full swing with maternity staff at Werribee Mercy Hospital delivering on average 330 babies a month. Latest statistics from the hospital show 3868 births in 2018 – about 100 more than the year before. Maternity services director Jacqui Van Dam has witnessed the baby boom over the past 10 years at the hospital. “In 2010, we delivered approximately 2000 babies, now we are hovering around the 3900 mark,” Dr Van Dam said.

Road upgrade costs drag on Briefs

did not yet know the full extent of the financial impact caused by the projectâ€™s hold-up. â€œThe delays to this project will result in additional costs, which have yet to be finalised,â€? he said. â€œThe final costs wonâ€™t be known until the project has been completed and all variations claims have been assessed and settled.â€? After the traffic lights were turned on, Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said drivers could â€œnow expect a safer trip down Tarneit Road, and get to where they need to go faster â€“ especially during the morning and evening peakâ€?.

â€œWe apologise to drivers for any inconvenience caused during the road works and thank the wider community for its patience while we delivered this important piece of infrastructure,â€? she said. The upgrade included an extra lane being installed in each direction between Hogans Certificate opportunity Road and Caraleena Drive, traffic lights at the Good News Lutheran College entrance, and a doubling in the size of the Tarneit and Hogans roads intersection. More than 20,000 cars travel through Tarneit Road north of Hogans Road each day.

A new mural is set become a creature feature â€“ or perhaps an animal attraction â€“ in Werribeeâ€™s CBD. The mural, which has been painted on the side of the Twigg Family Law building in Watton Street, faces a laneway accessible to the public. Twigg Family Law principal Colin Twigg said it took about five days for three artists to paint the mural. The artists â€“ Mike Makatron, Chuck Mayfield and Nitsuta â€“ said the mural was inspired by animals at Werribee Open Range Zoo and flora and fauna along the Werribee River. Break-in plea fails on dog fines

A Hoppers Crossing resident who says his dog escaped after an attempted break-in has been fined by Wyndham council for having a dog at large. Manu Grover said that although the dog escaped because the would-be burglar left a house door open, the council was refusing to overturn the fine. Mr Grover said the labrador, Max, was found in his street after the incident in September last year. He said that he and his partner did not report the attempted break-in to police as nothing was stolen and they did not want to waste officers’ time. Mr Grover said he was also fined for having an unregistered dog, although Max was registered with the council – but at his former address. Mr Grover said that in total, the fines issued by the council added up to between $700 to $800. He said he had tried explaining the circumstances of the attempted break-in and registration to the council, but that the council would not withdraw the fines. “I’ve appealed three times to them and they are just brushing it off,” Mr Grover said. “They are saying we have to pay – that’s it.” Council corporate affairs manager Emily Keogh said that if a dog was loose due to a burglary the council required a police report into the matter. She said that in Mr Grover’s case, “this evidence was requested but not provided in the review process and his appeal was denied”. Ms Keogh said residents appealing against fines had the right to have the matter heard in court.

The Werribee District Historical Society is entering into the spirit of the annual Australian Heritage Festival. The festival’s theme for this year, “Connecting people, places and the past” will be embraced in a Werribee Heritage Trail guided walk this weekend. Led by Christine Mauboy and Lance Pritchard from the historical society, the event will include significant places from Werribee’s past. “Werribee is rich in historic buildings, art and culture, but many people don’t know about it,” Ms Mauboy said. Mr Pritchard said it was important to remember that Werribee’s history extended back to before Europeans arrived, and that the

Wathaurung, Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung people were traditional custodians of the land. On May 4, Mr Pritchard will host a talk titled the “The Hume and Hovell Expedition Termination Examination”. He authored a report last year challenging the long-held view that the 1824-1825 expedition ended at Corio Bay, concluding that the expedition ended at the Werribee River. The Werribee Heritage Trail guided walk will be on Saturday, April 27, from 10am-noon, starting at Werribee Museum, 49 Watton Street. The event is free but bookings are essential. Resident blasts hoons By Esther Lauaki A resident fears that illegal “hoon” activity by bikers through Truganina Park could result in someone being killed or badly injured. The Altona Meadows man, who asked not to be named, said constant traffic of motorbikes, trail bikes and petrol engine-powered bicycles around the Bay Trail and Thousand Steps was getting out of control. “Truganina Park is the epicentre of the activity,” he told Star Weekly. “The Bay Trail and Truganina Park area is used by many families, elderly people and young children. “On a daily basis, a procession of motorbikes use the trail illegally at high speeds. “The trail bikes go to the Thousand Steps hill and the back of Truganina Park … and do jumps from the top. “One of the walk bridges was badly damaged by what looks to have been a very heavy vehicle.” Westgate Highway Patrol had been tackling the hooning on dirt and trail bikes in the area about 20 years ago when Wyndham was still considered to be a rural area, but the problem resurfaced in some parts of the municipality in recent years. In 2017, Wyndham police purchased two trail bikes to increase patrols of public reserves following increasing complaints from residents. The Gaskell Court resident is calling for fencing to prevent access to sensitive bush areas including the Cheetham Wetlands. He said that bad behaviour at the park, jointly managed by Hobsons Bay council and Parks Victoria, had escalated to violent run-ins too. “Last July, three youths assaulted my teenage

son while he was out riding his bicycle and he was nearly stabbed by them,” he said. “Our neighbour, a young mother, has also been terrorised by teenagers. “When we call the police they ask me to log a call to the hoon hotline, but this has not resulted in any actions to stop these activities.

“We would like to see a co-ordinated approach between Parks Victoria, who own the adjacent ground, council and related authorities to develop a plan to address this issue before someone is seriously injured.” Hobsons Bay council and Parks Victoria were contacted for comment.

Wyndham environment and sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said it would be an opportunity to hear from one of the “greatest minds in sustainability”. “Jon has a strong track record in the sustainability space, having co-founded Planet Ark with his good friend, Pat Cash, back in 1991,” Cr Marcus said. donating just over $25,000, while Werribee Central collectors raised $5367 for the cause. Across Victoria, volunteers raised $18,175,467 through tin shaking and door knocking, raffles, fundraisers and auctions. Good Friday Appeal director Anne Randall said the final tally could not have been reached without the “dedicated communities” across the state who came together for the kids. “We are so thankful to each and every person for their support,” Ms Randall said. “We would like to acknowledge area managers in regional areas, as well as the people in those communities for their donation; from

tin rattlers, to dedicated fundraisers and of course to those organising events. “All the generous donations and funds raised go towards state-of-the-art equipment and technology, patient and family-centred care, research, education and training at the wonderful Royal Children’s Hospital.” Rural and regional appeal collectors collectively raised about $3.5 million and CFA collectors around the state brought in $1.6 million. Since 1931 the Good Friday Appeal has now contributed more than $363 million to The Royal Children’s Hospital.

Karate comeback trail Alex Diaz Dehaney is fighting his way back to the top. The Hoppers Crossing fighter won a bronze medal at the Australian Karate Federation’s Australian Open held recently in Liverpool, New South Wales – his first tournament after 10 weeks off following appendix surgery. Diaz Dehaney, who competed in the kumite individual male senior +84 class, said the competition brought him a step closer to attaining his goals. “I had surgery and was out for 10 weeks, which left me with two weeks training as much as I could before the tournament,” he said. “I was doing yoga to strengthen myself but couldn’t do anything else.” He has his sights set on winning a world title in Canada in June. “It always feels good to get a podium placing,” Diaz Dehaney said.

“I can push myself to get better … with my eyes on Canada to put myself on the map. I’m hoping to perform well for Australia.” The Cuban-born fighter has Olympic dreams, too. “I was in the national team in Cuba,” he said. “I’ve been doing karate since I was six years old and officially competing since I was 10. “I have a few more tournaments later this year and, depending on how I go with them, I want to be able to qualify for the Olympics – that’s the ultimate goal.” Esther Lauaki

Master chefs in the making Altona’s Walleed Rasheed and Seddon’s Simon Toohey will be vying for a coveted white apron when they plate up their signature dish on the MasterChef Australia season premiere on Monday. Mr Rasheed told Star Weekly about the first dish he plates up for judges Matt Preston, Gary Mehigan and George Calombaris. “I’ve done a baclava ice cream cone,” he said. “It’s homemade filo pastry as the cone and that’s topped with roasted pistachio ice cream and pistachio paste,” he said. “Just to be there and know that you’re going to be cooking for these three amazing judges … I really wanted to make sure that I cooked my best.” Hailing from an Egyptian background, Mr Rasheed said he had cooked all his life.

“My mother and grandmother, they used to cook every day and I used to always learn and watch them cook,” he said. Mr Rasheed, who works in the corporate sector, said his philosophy towards food is that it brings people together. “The way I see food is, I truly believe that food … is like the centrepiece anywhere you go,” he said. “It’s the life of wherever you go.” Mr Toohey has taken a more savoury path for his signature dish and will be plating up a crispy skin cod with broccoli stem, jerusalem artichoke and pine nut cream. The pair will be among 24 amateur cooks when the show returns to Ten on April 29 at 7.30pm.

Liberal Lalor candidate out of poll race

By Esther Lauaki Werribee umpire Greg Cullen is taking officiating his 500th football match in his stride. He will clock up the milestone on Saturday, April 27, and said he hoped to mark the occasion by taking control of the Geelong and District Football League match between his beloved Werribee Centrals and Bell Post Hill at Galvin Park. He said 500 matches was “sort of” a big deal. “It’s the minor milestone of the major ones,” he said.

He started on the boundary at local games in 1995 and later moved into central umpiring. “I was the secretary of Werribee Centrals Football Club and I was always at games anyway,” Mr Cullen said. “They didn’t have boundary umpires, so I thought I would help out and then progressed to central umpiring … now I’ve gone to the goal because my knees are gone. I played sports nearly all my life and umpiring became my sport because there’s a lot of running.” In his years of umpiring, Mr Cullen said one of his most memorable games took place a

decade ago at Barwon Prison as part of Naidoc Week. “It was certainly one of the weirdest ones,” he said. “Quite an interesting game – getting scanned on the way through and seeing sniffer dogs on the sideline.” Mr Cullen said that copping heat from footy fans came with the territory and he would carry on doing what he loved for as long as he could. “You just laugh it off,” he said. “It just becomes part of the banter and generally they’re really good.”

The Liberal Party’s pre-selected candidate for the seat of Lalor has resigned ahead of the federal election, because she may be able to claim Polish citizenship through one of her parents. The Liberals earlier this month announced 22-year-old Werribee resident Kate Oski would run in Lalor, which is considered a safe Labor seat. But last week, it was reported that Ms Oski resigned due to the possibility she might be able to claim Polish citizenship through her father. Two other Victorian candidates have also “voluntarily withdrawn” ahead of the May 18 election, according to a Liberal Party spokesperson. “The party’s vetting process identified there was a possibility neither would meet strict citizenship requirements under section 44 of the Australian Constitution in time for close of nominations,” he said. Since 2017, several Australian politicians have been referred to court, resigned or been forced to run for re-election after it emerged that they could be ineligible to hold their positions due to section 44 of the national constitution, which forbids parliamentarians from having allegiance to a foreign power, especially citizenship. Identity theft a growing threat By Alesha Capone Police have warned residents about “a significant increase” in mail theft across Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong. Acting Inspector Aaron Riches said police had noticed an increase in this type of offending in the past fortnight. “The items these thieves are generally targeting are mail that contains people’s drivers licences, utility accounts, credit card transactions and bank statements,” he said. “These items are then used by criminals to assume an identify and then defraud victims.”

Acting Inspector Aaron Riches said police were intent on cracking down on mail theft. “We take this type of offending seriously and recognise the emotional toll it can take on an individual when their identity is stolen,” he said. He said that on March 25, Wyndham police arrested two males in relation to mail theft.

“The males were interviewed in relation to possessing the proceeds of crime and theft and were both released,” he said. “It is expected they will be charged on summons.” Acting Inspector Riches said Victoria Police has a dedicated crime prevention team that provided advice and remedies to local community safety problems. “We’d encourage the community to take simple steps to ensure they aren’t the victim of mail theft,” he said. Acting Inspector Aaron Riches said these steps included:

• Consider purchasing a locked mailbox or fitting a lock to your mailbox. • Emptying your mailbox frequently. • Having mail held at the post office, or collected by a friend, when away for extended periods. • Disposing of unwanted mail carefully and shredding documents with personal details. • Making sure your mailbox is large enough for the mail to be dropped into a secure section so letters aren’t overflowing Anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour or has information on mail theft is urged to contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A store which has been operating in Werribee for 18 years is set to get a facelift. Discount grocery store NQR opened in Watton Street during March 2001. The chain, which began in 1987, was purchased by Tradeorigins Pty Ltd last May after several months in administration. The purchase ensured that 160 jobs across Victoria were saved and that 14 stores stayed open. Parkinson’s new hope

Shaking hands and muscle stiffness have affected Fred Van Ross every day for nearly 20 years. The 73-year-old Truganina resident has lived with Parkinson’s disease since 2003 and has dedicated years to learning more about the illness so he could help others. “I was treated for a tennis elbow tremor at 57 and had no idea what Parkinson’s was,” Mr Van Ross said. “When I was diagnosed, I went to the internet, but it was not helpful enough – I wanted to know more.” Mr Van Ross said he came to terms with his disease when he joined a support group and has since become an ambassador for Parkinson’s Victoria. “I accepted my condition as being something that I did not want, but I had to learn to live with,” he said. “I have Parkinson’s, but it doesn’t have me. “I have total support from my wife and family who understand the day-to-day issues that arise.” Mr Van Ross is among thousands of Victorian’s living with Parkinson’s who can access a new therapy, Xadago, covered under the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme from this month. Royal Melbourne Hospital movement disorders director Andrew Evans welcomed the addition of a new oral therapy. “We still have a long way to go in understanding what causes Parkinson’s disease and how to improve the management of symptoms, but with the availability of additional treatments to add on to the main drug therapy, Levodopa – it does mean we have more options to help patients,” Dr Evans said.

Wyndham council’s Community Volunteer Awards are open for 2019 nominations. The awards have seven different categories – community engagement; community health and wellbeing; arts, culture or tourism; environment and sustainability; sports and recreation; young volunteer of the year; and community group. One of the individual category winners will be selected as Wyndham’s Citizen of the Year. MY WYNDHAM Tarneit resident Jobeline Madrid, 21, is an ambassador for Wyndham council’s One Wyndham Family program, which supports young people who have demonstrated ingenuity and positive accomplishments. She chats with Alesha Capone.

What did you do after finishing school?

I studied a bachelor of science at the University of Melbourne, hoping to become a dentist or oral therapist. I also work as a dental assistant. I just really like patients; it’s really good when they tell you their stories. Mainly it’s about the patients’ stories – you’re inside a cubicle from 9am-5pm, but I’ve learned so much about what real life is about. It also teaches you sympathy. In high school, I really liked to work with everyone. The transition from working with students to health professionals has been really good – that’s what I love.

Where did you attend school? Werribee Secondary College. I did a lot in high school. I think what I really enjoyed was the leadership programs. I was also a house captain and on the yearbook committee. I can’t

give all the credit to myself – the school gave me opportunities to get into volunteering and I also did the International Baccalaureate (IB). To complete the IB diploma, you needed to do volunteering for 150 hours. I joined the Youth in Philanthropy group in year 11, which is run

by the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation. There were around six of us girls taking part, all classmates, and we would visit different organisations which did things like circus training and music training for young people who wanted to do something with their life.

You also volunteered in the Teddy Bear Hospital program while you were at uni? With the Teddy Bear Hospital, students studying anatomy, dental and physiotherapy, had teddy bears at locations in Chadstone and the city. The teddy bear had a zip and different body parts, such as lungs, inside, for the kids to learn about ambulances and different medical topics. We would set up a booth in different areas, sit at a table with four others in white coats and glasses and talk with children – it was so different for them, compared to playing on an iPad. They really enjoyed it.

The flow of water in Werribee River is controlled by the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission in order to minimise flows through Werribee, a letter from the SR&WSC told council. State Rivers released this information in answer to a letter from Werribee Shire Council seeking the commission’s policy regarding flows in the river.

Homicide detectives believe distinctive jewellery, valued at more than $15,000 which was stolen from the body of murdered drug dealer Dimitrio Nanos may hold the key to his murder. It is believed the jewellery was taken from where his body was found at his Springe Dve, Hoppers Crossing house sometime between 11pm on Wednesday 5 April and 1am Thursday.

A dispute has erupted between State Labor MP for Werribee Ms Mary Gillett, and the west’s top policeman Chief Superintendent Brian Edward over whether 10 new constables promised to Werribee in 1997 ever arrived. As the row over police numbers in Werribee escalated, Ms Gillett last week claimed Mr Edward had told her the extra police have never arrived – with internal promotions occurring instead.

Plans for a $130 million redevelopment of Werribee Mercy remain on track, despite a system-wide review of hospital services by the State Government. Speaking during a visit to inspect designs for its $14 million maternity services expansion last Wednesday, Health Minister Daniel Andrews said it was critical to determine what and where services were required across the west.

Australia’s property markets are changing and in most capital cities the long path to purchase has become that little bit shorter. That’s news that will be welcomed by would-be first-home buyers faced with the difficult financial hurdle of saving a lump sum deposit amid rising living costs and low wages growth. With buyer urgency having largely dissipated in most cities, prospective first-home buyers can focus on building a savings plan to gain entry into previously competitive markets. The Domain First-Home Buyers Report identifies Melbourne areas that offer the lowest entry prices and quickest paths to purchase – go to domain.com.au for full breakdown of all Australian capitals. Melbourne is the second-most expensive city to purchase an entry level home and has the second-longest path to purchase, behind Sydney. Even though it remains a challenging market, the tide appears to have turned in favour of first-home buyers. Prospective first-home buyers will be saving for five years and nine months to achieve an entry-level house deposit and four years for an entry-level unit, shaving off two months compared to this time last year. Softer housing market conditions have more broadly filtered down across the market. Melbourne has one of the largest differences between property types among capitals, with an entry-price differential of $173,000. It takes an additional 21 months to save for an entry-level house instead of a unit. The percentage difference between entry house and unit prices is at an all-time high, with high levels of

development completions serving to contain unit prices relative to houses. Prospective buyers seeking quicker market access will need to look to the city’s edge. The west offers the shortest path to purchase, along with the north-west. Buyers need to look towards Melton-Bacchus

Marsh, Wyndham or Sunbury, which have the shortest saving time for entry-level houses at four years and six months, four years and 11 months and four years and 10 months respectively. For buyers seeking affordable housing closer to the CBD, the suburbs of Essendon

SPORT Puli thrives on true grit If you put a challenge in the way of Werribee basketball rising star Maddi Puli, she will invariably find a way to overcome it. The first signs of Puli’s determination to conquer a pressure situation came when she was an under-14 player at the Werribee Devils. Puli missed the cut for the first team representative squad, but instead of putting that into the too hard basket, she used it as motivation. “That made me work harder to try and make the first team the next year,” she said. “What I like about basketball is the opportunity to develop and get better is always there.” Since that knock-back, Puli has made a rapid rise into multiple Victorian under-age state teams, Australian under-age representation and a development spot on a WNBL roster. Now 18, Puli has the basketball world at her feet. She is striving to the make the cut for the Australian Gems under-19 team that will play at the world championships later this year. Only recently, Puli was informed that she was accepted on a basketball scholarship to Texas Christian University, a division 1 basketball college. The four-year scholarship will allow Puli to

mix her studies with hoop dreams. “It’ll be an unbelievable opportunity,” she said. “We’re in a really tough conference in the Big 12, so there’s some really tough games in there and it will be good to put myself up against some of the best in the country.” Before Puli jets off to the US in June, she will leave no stone unturned in her bid to make the Gems squad. Representing Australia is not new to Puli – she did so at under-17 level at the Oceania championships in 2017. “It’s honestly surreal putting on the green and gold,” she said. “It’s an unbelievable feeling going out and knowing that you’re representing the country for your age group.” Making the final cut for the Gems under-19s in a world championship year is a whole different kettle of fish. She was rejected for the Gems squad last year, but that will motivate her this time around. “It will be a tough camp, but I’m looking forward to it,” she said. A good indication of how much Puli wants to succeed in the sport is commitment to get to her training sessions with the Dandenong Rangers. Before she turned 18, her mum and dad had

the task of driving from Werribee to Dandenong up to four times a week in peak hour traffic so she could take her place as a development player on a WNBL roster. Thankfully for her parents, Puli was successful in her driver’s test and can take herself to training now. Puli has lapped up every minute of her time with the Rangers, in particular the chance to debut off the bench in a WNBL game. “Playing against some of the best players in Australia for the women’s league has helped me grow,” she said. Puli is the April nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Puli will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist her in achieving her sports goals.

Werribee star an AFL wildcard By Lance Jenkinson Werribee playing assistant coach Michael Barlow would answer the call from any AFL club in need of a ready-to-go midfielder. With the AFL introducing a mid-season draft this year, the prospect of a club picking up a mature-aged player to fill an urgent need has become real. Teams can select a player at the draft on a short-term contract with no long-term implications for their playing list. Barlow will not actively pursue a return to the AFL, but has made no secret of his desire to play at the top level if a finals-contending club had an interest in his services. “It’s not a discussion until someone makes me consider it,” Barlow said. “In my heart of hearts, I know I can still play AFL football.” Barlow had nine seasons in the AFL with Fremantle and the Gold Coast Suns. The 31-year-old featured in Freo’s 2013 grand final side and won three Ross Glendinning Medals for best-on-ground performances in western derbies against West Coast. He was the AFL Players Association’s best young player in 2010 after he was snapped up by Fremantle from Werribee in the 2010 AFL rookie draft. Barlow’s last two seasons with Gold Coast Suns were frustrating because he was playing good football in his limited senior action and dominating the NEAFL, but the Suns focused on youth and somewhat froze him out. That led to a bit of unfulfilment for Barlow at the back end of his time as an AFL player. “A lot of players can come out of the system carrying some bitterness,” Barlow said. “You can get down because you feel like you’re not where you should be – and that was the last 12 to 18 months of my [AFL] career. “I thought I handled myself well on the exterior, but [also] knowing I’m probably still an AFL-standard player.” There is no exact science when it comes to recruitment in the AFL. In Barlow’s case, has the system thrown out a perfectly good footballer before his use-by date? himself that opportunity – and why not? It’s not like he’s been dropped from the team.” Barlow stressed that his total focus is on his work with Werribee in the Victorian Football League. But one of the main reasons why he is at Werribee and has not filtered back to local football is his desire to play at the highest level

for as long as possible. That immediately puts him front and square in the discussion of the AFL’s mid-season draft. “I want to play at the highest standard I can for as long as I can,” Barlow said. “I don’t think about it [returning to the AFL] at all, but I’ve said that I still think I’m an AFL-standard player and professional.

“As recently as last year, I played good AFL football on limited opportunities. “When things are put in front of me … media opportunities, coaching opportunities or other professional opportunities, I can consider them. That [mid-season draft potential] hasn’t arisen, so I haven’t given it a moment of thought.”

AT A GLANCE

Midway through 2018 Volkswagen introduced the seven-seat Tiguan Allspace. Though based on the five-seat Tiguan the new Allspace is a significantly longer vehicle. It has more overall length, a longer wheelbase and 106mm more rear overhang. All of which allows for the addition of two seats in a third row but with the same width as the five-seater. Cleverly, it still has a boot capacity of 230 litres with all the seats in use. With the third row seats folded down the boot goes up a very useful 700 litres. Interestingly, the Allspace is the only seven-seater in the Volkswagen SUV range as the larger Touareg is still a five-seater. Despite the impressively low prices – from $45,490 to $60,427 – the equipment levels are high in both models: three-zone climate-control air conditioning, keyless entry and start as well as an electronic tailgate. There is even a rechargeable torch in luggage area. Highline adds electrically adjustable front seats with memory function, heated front and second row two outer seats and Vienna leather appointed upholstery. Our test Tiguan Allspace for the past week was the top of the range model, the R-line, which adds 20-inch Suzuka alloy wheels, R-Line bumpers and side sills, a black rear spoiler, aluminium scuff plates, black Vienna leather seats, black headline, steering wheel with paddles, brushed stainless-steel pedals.

A Volkswagen Discover Media navigation system is operated through an 8-inch touchscreen with App-Connect, Media Control.

Apple Carplay And Android Auto is standard in both models as is Bluetooth. Allspace Highline upgrades to a 9.2-inch screen and Discover Pro satellite navigation system. Audio entertainment in our test vehicle was by way of the optional Dynaudio Excite premium sound system and was a delight to listen to. There are only three USB ports, we reckon an extra couple would make more sense in a vehicle designed for multiple kid carting.

Safety

Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace has been given a five-star ANCAP safety rating. The second row seats have three top tether points and IsoFix mounts in the outboard positions. Driver assist features include city autonomous emergency braking, multi-collision braking, pedestrian monitoring, lane assist, park assist, a rear view camera and front and rear sensors. Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace R-line is an attractive, comfortable people mover with a hint of sportiness in its makeup. The R-Line costs a fair bit more than the more basic versions, but if you can justify the extra bucks, it’s worth it.

The front and middle rows have ample legroom and headroom, but the rear pair of seats are best left for preteen kids. The engine is responsive, with minimal turbo lag and real willingness to get up and go when you want to. Fuel consumption was typically in the six to eight litres per hundred kilometres range on motorways and easy paced country roads. If you do get stuck into it usage is likely to climb dramatically into the 10 to 13 litres range. On the road, comfort is good, with the typical solid feel we’ve admired in Volkswagens for many decades. Steering feel is good, perhaps a little lighter than some would like in a semi-performance vehicle like this, but we were happy with it.
