Sneydes fix ‘urgent’ By Alesha Capone

The Point Cook Action Group is urging authorities to further upgrade the intersection of Point Cook and Sneydes roads at the same time as resurfacing works, set to take place later this year. Resurfacing of Point Cook Road, from Sneydes Road to the freeway overpass, is set to take place later this year as part of the state government’s $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade. Point Cook Action Group president Bob Fairclough said that it would make sense to install traffic lights and add an extra lane at the intersection while the road was resurfaced. Mr Fairclough said motorists waiting to turn right at the intersection often “lost patience”. “I believe people are taking their lives into their hands when they use this intersection – we really feel this upgrade is vital,” he said. “It’s one of the major issues we are receiving feedback from Point Cook residents on. It’s a very dangerous intersection.” The group last month launched a campaign advocating for the intersection to be upgraded, printing 500 postcards which state that an “urgent fix” is needed “in order to prevent a fatal accident at the intersection”. The postcards were distributed at Point Cook cafes and the Point Cook Pop-Up Park, for residents to collect and send to the state government in Spring Street. Wyndham council has included a request for the intersection to be upgraded in its submission on the state government’s 2019-20 budget. On March 30, paramedics were called to a multi-vehicle accident at the intersection about 8.40am. An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said a woman aged in her 50s and a man aged in his 70s were taken to Footscray Hospital with upper body injuries. Altona MP Jill Hennessy said that she had raised the matter of the intersection with the roads minister. “I am committed to working with the government to ensure that the intersection at Point Cook and Sneydes roads is upgraded for the safety of the community,” she said. A VicRoads spokesperson said: “We’ve heard from the local community about how we can improve traffic flow and safety on Point Cook Road. “We continue to work closely with Wyndham City Council on a number of potential road safety improvements for the Point Cook Road corridor, including at the Point Cook Road and Sneydes Road intersection.”

Professional wrestler Erika Reid will break out her best and boldest moves when she takes on an interstate rival this week. The Braybrook star will fight Perth’s Lena Kross for the first time at the Italian Sports Club of Werribee. The two women will feature as one of the main events in Battle Lines, presented by Showdown Wrestling. Reid said her beloved pet rat, Pixie, often accompanied her to wrestling events. She described wrestling as “like theatre, but fighting”. “People are like, ‘Wrestling’s so fake’, but it’s not – it’s hard to fake getting punched in the head,” she said. “With wrestling, I enjoy the creative outlet, I enjoy the character and I enjoy fighting – I think that’s lots of fun.” Reid said that her full wrestling character name – Dreamtime Voodoo Witch Erika Reid – demonstrated her pride in her indigenous heritage and hopes of being a role model for children and indigenous young people. Federal budget disappoints By Esther Lauaki Wyndham council believes the federal budget missed the mark, with no funding allocated to the municipality’s road and rail. Mayor Mia Shaw said while some initiatives to come out of the budget, handed down last week, would benefit locals, the west had been short-changed. “Our request for increased capacity on the Regional Rail Link was ignored, as was the request for new and expanded bus services, increased capacity on the Werribee line, and a

Werribee and Wyndham Vale rail connection,” Cr Shaw said. Cr Shaw called on the state and federal governments to offer solutions to Wyndham’s “crippled” rail services. “The fast train between Melbourne and Geelong is a fantastic initiative, however in Wyndham we are at the point where we just need increased services,” she said. “Focusing on the speed of services would be a luxury. “Trains are beyond capacity, bus services don’t sufficiently link up with the train timetable

and it’s extremely hard to get a carpark at any of our train stations. “If there is money to be spent on rail infrastructure, I would think that some consideration should be given to Wyndham.” Cr Shaw said that Wyndham would not benefit from the $500 million national commuter carpark fund, despite the municipality’s train stations operating at capacity. Victorian Local Government Authority president Marg Attley last week said the commuter carpark fund was a missed

opportunity to solve the “suburban congestion problem”. “In our view, that money will be much better spent on outer suburban bus networks to increase network reach, frequency and connectivity,” Cr Attley said. “An integrated public transport infrastructure will help to ease peak hour traffic congestion.” Cr Attley noted that it was almost inevitable that most of the federal budget’s funding commitments would be reviewed and readjusted by a new government.

Raising $10,000 for children is the goal for Werribee’s Stephanie Kearney. Stephanie rallied the troops at Eagle Stadium last week to get behind a Netball Week to raise funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital. “Last year we did a one-day fundraiser in support of breast cancer research and we decided to follow that up with another event this year – this time to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital,” she said. The action-packed netball week included 230 teams, more than half of those junior teams, playing to raise money for the hospital.

Wyndham residents are being urged to get behind a push for upgrades to rail facilities and resources in the lead-up to the federal election. Four new Regional Rail Link stations in Wyndham and a metropolitan rail link from Wyndham Vale to Werribee are at the top of Wyndham council’s election wish list. Council chief executive Kelly Grigsby and Cr Henry Barlow went to the nation’s capital in February to call for more federal investment in rail and infrastructure as part of the National Growth Areas Alliance-led Catch Up with the Outer Suburbs campaign. Wyndham residents can support the campaign via an online petition. Ms Grigsby said that apart from the new stations and metropolitan rail link between Wyndham Vale and Werribee, she and Cr Barlow advocated for a number of other projects. They included fast-tracking an environmental impact assessment for the Outer Metropolitan Ring Road, ongoing funding for four-year-old kindergarten and $11 million to complete the modernisation and upgrade of the pipeline for the Werribee Irrigation District. Wyndham council is one of 21 councils across Australia that comprise the National Growth Areas Alliance, which lobbies state and federal governments for increased funding for roads, transport, local jobs and community facilities in fast-growing outer suburbs. Triumphs of car history Graeme Oxleyâ€™s love affair with Triumphs started more than 50 years ago. The Wyndham Vale resident, who owns three of the iconic cars, will be among hundreds of exhibitors at the Historic Winton racing weekend next month. Mr Oxley said he was looking forward to showing his 1974 Triumph Stag at the long-running event, which will run over three days from Friday, May 17, at Winton Motor Raceway near Benalla. â€œMy affiliation with Triumph goes back to 1955,â€? he said. â€œMy dad was a standard Triumph and Ferguson (tractor) dealer in the â€™50s and â€™60s. I got my first one in 1966 and I have had a Triumph car every working day of

my life. When I was in the air force, I owned a Triumph TR6 when I was posted to America.â€? This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Triumph TR6 model, which first came off the production line in September 1968. Police want help to identify a woman after she allegedly hit a man with a key chain several times at Hoppers Crossing train station about 11.30am on October 19 last year. A fire at an unoccupied Islamic school is the latest in a spate of incidents at the Truganina site since the beginning of the year. Fire crews attended Al Taqwa College’s Olive Branch campus on Hopkins Road last Wednesday just before 10am, finding a portable classroom ablaze.

Appliances from CFA brigades in Hoppers Crossing, Truganina, Caroline Springs, Point Cook and Werribee attended the fire. The Olive Branch campus, on 40 hectares of private land, was used to offer a horticulture and agriculture curriculum to year seven to 10 students for practical lessons, but it has been vacant for a number of years. Tarneit and Point Cook residents will have a say in naming the newest schools in their communities. A new Tarneit primary school, currently under the working name Davis Creek Primary School, and the provisionally named Point Cook South Senior Secondary College, need new names before they open in 2020. Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said community engagement would begin this month. Residents are invited to submit feedback online and through social media. Ms Connolly described it as an opportunity “to shape the character” of the new schools. “This is your chance to put forward a school name that reflects the unique character of our area,” she said. “We are ensuring every child has a great local school and a great start in life.” The new Tarneit and Point Cook schools are part of a state government school building program that will establish 100 new government schools in the next eight years. New schools will open next year in Ballarat, Casey, Greater Dandenong, Greater Geelong, Hume and Mitchell as well as Wyndham. For information about new schools, go to schoolbuildings.vic.gov.au

Tears for father-and-son reunion By Esther Lauaki A son’s journey from Northern Ireland has culminated in an emotional reunion with his father after 20 years of separation. Winder Raj made the 17,000-kilometre journey last month to find his father, Janak, who he believed was homeless in Tarneit. “We talked on a daily basis for many years,” Winder said. “Then we were talking every few weeks. But he’d been out of touch now for a year and we were worried.” He said that Janak migrated from India two decades ago, leaving behind his wife, Satnam, and two sons in a bid to boost the family’s fortunes by working as a labourer in Australia. The 63-year-old was admitted to St Vincent’s Hospital on March 26 after he was injured at Tarneit railway station. Told of the his father’s general location by a family friend, Winder said he appealed for information at the station while carrying an old photo of Janak. “I thought to myself, ‘How am I going to find him here? It’s a needle in a haystack’,” he said. Father and son were reunited after social worker Helen McNicol contacted Tarneit station to find out more about Janak and attempt to identify next of kin. “It was unclear whether he’d been assaulted, but he took a train to Southern Cross and then was brought to St Vincent’s emergency department without a wallet or ID, no phone and no shoes,” Ms McNicol said. She said their reunion was very moving. “It took Janak a few seconds for the penny to drop – he cried, Winder cried and there were tears from every staff member present,” she said. The father and son have since returned to Enniskillen in Northern Ireland.

Family violence scourge of west By Alesha Capone Police have attended 9141 family violence incidents in the west during a 12-month period, with Wyndham, Brimbank and Melton recording the highest numbers of offences. Between July, 2017, and June last year, Victoria Police recorded 2742 family violence offences in Wyndham, 2565 in Brimbank, 2065 in Melton, 971 in Hobsons Bay and 798 in Maribyrnong. By comparison, between July, 2016, and June, 2017, police recorded 8865 family violence

incidents in the west, with 2717 in Wyndham, 2246 in Brimbank, 2104 in Melton, 1016 in Hobsons Bay and 782 in Maribyrnong. Wyndham and Brimbank recorded the sixth and seventh highest numbers of family violence incidents in Victoria in the year to June last year, while Melton placed 10th on the list. Between July, 2017, and June last year, Casey recorded the highest number of family violence incidents in the state with 4733 offences, followed by Greater Geelong with 3319, Whittlesea with 3057, Hume with 3040 and Frankston with 2718.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brad Lawrence, from the Westgate Family Violence Investigation Unit, said: “The rapidly growing population in the area of Wyndham certainly contributes significantly to the high recording of family violence incidents in the area. “Local police have progressively specialised our response to family violence in recognition of the risk and complexity that these incidents pose.” He said that across the state, reports of family violence had gradually increased over time.

“Sadly, though, we continue to see unacceptable numbers of women and children who are not safe in their own homes,” he said. “We know that family violence takes many forms – it’s not just about physical violence. “It includes coercive and controlling behaviour and demeaning comments … it does not discriminate and knows no boundaries.” If you feel at risk of family violence or believe that someone you know is, seek help from police or a support service such as Safe Steps Family Violence Response Centre (1800 015 188).

Be part of the solution Point Cook’s Thelma Nascimento is helping to lead a campaign to raise awareness about family violence in culturally diverse communities. Mrs Nascimento, a Brazilian-Australian, is one of 65 community leaders from across the state participating in Be Part of the Change. For the campaign, AMES Australia has trained the community leaders to advocate for changes in their own communities, when it comes to family violence. Mrs Nascimento said she graduated from an AMES Prevention of Violence Against Women course last year, which encouraged participants to launch their own projects on the issue. Along with three men, she founded the Break Barriers initiative – which is separate to Be Part of the Change – to demonstrate how gender stereotypes can lead to violence. Mrs Nascimento said after she penned a poem about “the everyday sexisms girls go

through”, she and the three men decided to make two videos – one in English and one in other languages – with women reading out the poem. Mrs Nascimento said they were also planning to make a video with men talking about how gender stereotypes hurt them, and a third one with both men and women talking about the consequences of violence. Ms Nascimento said she believed educating the community about gender equality was important for future generations. “I think it is important to show the world is so big and it’s important to show you can be who you want and do what you want,” she said. All fired up for appeal It’s an amazing achievement: across the past 47 years, the Werribee Fire Brigade has helped to raise more than $1 million for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Werribee Fire Brigade former captain Darryl Wells said all the volunteer collectors who had helped out had contributed to this success. However he said the community also deserved its thanks. “All this is due to the great support the brigade receives from the Wyndham community,” Mr Wells said. Last year, the brigade and its volunteer collectors raised $77,350 but Mr Wells said they wanted to raise even more this year. He said the brigade was recruiting volunteer collectors for this year’s appeal.

On Good Friday, the volunteers will meet at the Werribee Fire Brigade, at the corner of Gibbons and Anderson streets. Collectors are to be at the station by 8.30am, and photographic identity is required, such as a drivers licence or student card. “From there … they will be bussed to various locations around Werribee and Wyndham Vale to collect,” Mr Wells said. “They will be brought back to the fire station for a delicious lunch then returned to collect again in the afternoon. “All of this is made possible by the generous support the brigade receives from organisations within Wyndham.”

Dog squad on the job By Esther Lauaki A Wyndham Vale family is heralding its dogs as “heroes” after they surprised a man who was running from police. Ricardo Galvez told Star Weekly his family was awakened in the early hours of March 28 to the barking of their three German shepherds, Rexus, Bella and Szarik. “They were barking so loudly inside the house because they were sensing something was happening outside,” Mr Galvez said. “They were scratching at the glass sliding door to go out so I got up and let them outside.” Mr Glavez said he saw flashlights shining into his backyard and a person climbing the fence. “The man got a big surprise when he jumped over the fence into our backyard because the dogs surrounded him and were barking,” Mr Glavez said. “He tried to enter our house through the back door to the garage, but it was locked … the police managed to stop him and were screaming, ‘Stop, get on the ground’.” He said his family was left scared and shaken by the incident, but police assured them that the man had been arrested. “If it wasn’t for the dogs, who knows what would have happened?,” Mr Galvez said. He said his pooches never intended to harm the man. “They are show-offs,” he said. “Our older dog (Szarik) was trying to chase them … he thought they were playing.” Werribee Senior Constable Graeme Rayner confirmed a man had been arrested after trying to evade police. Buyer boost on sunset clauses Property buyers will have more power when purchasing off-the-plan as a result of a state government crackdown. Changes under the Sale of Land Amendment Bill, which will come into effect this month, will mean developers can only exercise a sunset clause with written consent from the buyer or by an order of the Supreme Court of Victoria. Before the changes, developers could exploit sunset clauses by delaying construction, terminating contracts and then re-selling properties for higher prices. Up to 100 buyers last year were affected by developer Grassylands Pty Ltd’s decision to trigger sunset clause provisions for the first three stages of land sold at Emerald Park estate in Tarneit. At the time, a Grassylands spokesman said it had invoked the provisions because it had been unable to have subdivision plans registered with the land titles office by the required date. Consumer Affairs Minister Marlene Kairouz said the changes to the bill were aimed at protecting buyers and restoring confidence in the property market. “We’re taking action to make sure that Victorians aren’t being ripped off … the days of misusing sunset clauses to make super profits are over,” Ms Kairouz said. She said that the new laws on sunset clauses would be backdated to August 23 last year, when the legislation was announced. Esther Lauaki

Smart thinking in Wyndham By Esther Lauaki Traffic lights that regulate traffic flow in response to real-time demand and sensors to predict when drains need maintaining could be the way of the future in Wyndham. The council’s draft Smart City strategy is aimed at transforming the municipality into a global leader in using new technology to create real-time solutions for everyday problems.

Under the draft strategy, which is out for public comment, technology could be used to upgrade services including traffic and carparking, public safety, lighting, libraries, recycling and reuse of waste and online services provided by the council. Improving transport and congestion, council facilities, CCTV in public spaces and fixing internet speed and connection issues were among the priorities identified by more than 800 Wyndham residents in a recent survey.

Smart City portfolio holder Aaron An is encouraging Wyndham residents and business owners to have their say on the draft strategy. “The draft strategy is part of council’s vision for Wyndham to become a connected, digital city through cutting-edge technology, partnerships and data-driven decision-making over the next five years,” Cr An said. “The Smart City Strategy outlines how technology, data and innovation will be used to address our urban challenges and shape how

Latest data from DC Power shows that 8170 solar systems have been installed in the two suburbs since 2001, ranking them in the top five in the state – and eighth in the country. Major sports strategy unveiled By Esther Lauaki Lawrie Emmins Reserve could become the destination for two-wheeled sports in the west under an ambitious Wyndham council proposal. The Lawrie Emmins Reserve draft master plan, which is out for public comment, aims to create a regional-standard park including a major cycling sports precinct, ovals, gardens, wetlands and recreational areas. Tracks for road cycling, BMX and motocross, an outdoor velodrome and traffic school, an

upgraded target archery area as well as walking and running trails and a skate/scooter park are also key inclusions in the master plan. Cr Peter Maynard, the council’s sports and development spokesman, said the draft master plan sets out a long-term vision for Lawrie Emmins Reserve focused on increasing community use and deterring anti-social behaviour around the area. “If fully funded, the master plan will deliver a state-of-the-art reserve that is the same size as Presidents Park, with unparalleled connections to main roads, public transport and trail

networks – including the Federation Trail,” Cr Maynard said. “Wyndham council’s skate, BMX and bike strategy and Wyndham sports strategy have both identified opportunities for Lawrie Emmins Reserve to become a regionally significant cycling venue to support formal and informal physical activity participation. “Cycling is the second-highest recreational activity undertaken by residents in Wyndham.” The $65 million proposal is expected to be rolled out in stages over the next 15 years subject to investment from council, state and

federal governments. Wyndham council has already budgeted $1.6 million for the motocross track redevelopment, which is scheduled for completion later this year. Two free pop-up community information sessions will be held on May 5, between 11am and 1pm at Lawrie Emmins Reserve. The wrestling write stuff A Werribee author has turned a “writing experiment” into a top-selling wrestling book. David Farrell’s novel, Dropping the Belt, debuted this month as the No.1 wrestling book on Amazon. “Dropping the belt is a wrestlers’ term for losing a championship,” Farrell said. “In 2008, I made a wrestling doco in Canberra call The Young and the Wrestlers. “It was an underground show, filming the sixth-month lead-up to their equivalent of Wrestlemania. “That was where I created the story idea about a girl who meets a guy who moonlights as a wrestler and what happens from there.” Farrell put out a call to three anonymous ghostwriters online to get creative with the storyline. “I’ve written a few novels, but this time I learned that there was this group of ghostwriters so I approached them to write to

the theme and waited to see what they could come up with,” he said. “I didn’t know where it was going and what I was going to get. It’s become this writing experiment.” Farrell edited and stitched the stories together with his own words, but said he allowed the story to take on a path of its own. “It’s got a niche audience … it’s a comedy,” he said. “You go into it hoping for the best.” Copies of Dropping the Belt will be on sale at the Showdown Wrestling event at the Italian Sports Club of Werribee on Saturday, April 13, from 6.30pm. Residents dump on ‘trash’ houses By Alesha Capone Derelict houses and neglected construction sites are causing concern for some Wyndham residents. A Truganina resident said that she was fed up with the state of houses under construction in various locations in the suburb, including Gilbee Road. The woman said there was no temporary fencing in place at some of the sites, resulting in illegal dumping and overgrown weeds. Snakes had been spotted at one construction site and children had been seen playing at one half-built property.

The resident said she had reported the construction sites – which appear to belong to the same company – to the company itself, Wyndham council, the Victorian Building Authority, WorkSafe and the Environment Protection Authority. A man living in Aloma Avenue, Wyndham Vale, who asked to be known only as Brett, said a fire had occurred in an abandoned house in his street about five years ago. Since then the house kept “filling up with rubbish”. Another resident, Scotty Mac, said there were two “trashed” houses near the intersection of Dohertys and Woods roads in Truganina. When Star Weekly visited the two properties, there were piles of rubbish inside the houses and in the front yards, including mattresses, furniture, books, clothing, tyres and toys. Agency a point of pride By Esther Lauaki Neeraj Goel describes himself as a “one-man army”. Stockpiled waste sent to landfill Hundreds of thousands of cubic metres of recycling waste stockpiled in Melbourne’s north have been dumped in landfill. The Laverton and Coolaroo plants of recycling company SKM were shut down by the Environment Protection Authority in February this year for non-compliance. The company is also being prosecuted by the EPA for a massive fire that started in piles of rubbish at its Coolaroo plant in 2017. Both of SKM’s centres reopened last month after the EPA granted permission for them to start accepting recycled waste again.

Waste industry and trucking company sources said waste had gone to the Melbourne Regional Landfill in Ravenhall during the shutdown. Material that hadn’t been dumped at that tip had been moved by SKM into other storage locations, they said. EPA chief executive Cathy Wilkinson confirmed some of the material stockpiled by SKM had gone to the tip. “As part of the notices served on SKM’s Coolaroo and Laverton North site, it was an EPA requirement that a detailed record be kept

demonstrating how they complied with the notice requirements,” she said. “Waste from [the] Coolaroo and Laverton sites went to a number of different markets, as well as a volume disposed of to landfill.” Dr Wilkinson would not say what quantity was dumped in landfill, citing confidentiality. SKM’s problems finding markets for recycled material it collects on behalf of 32 Victorian councils began last year when China drastically reduced the amount of waste it was prepared to take from other countries. Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio

was asked how much recyclable material SKM had sent to landfill and what would prevent it dumping recyclables again. She did not respond to those questions. She said the state government had invested $37 million in a strategic plan for the recycling industry. Ms D’Ambrosio said one of the key aims of the plan was to develop a “circular economy policy” by next year that would “identify longer term solutions” for the sector. – The Age

Actor’s iconic experience Point Cook actor Anthony Sottile has been playing an iconic character in Faulty Towers – The Dining Experience, for the past nine years. Sottile said that while growing up in Werribee, he and his family were “big fans” of English comedies such as Fawlty Towers, but he never imagined that he would one day portray Manuel, the hilarious Spanish waiter with a pet rat and a penchant for saying “Que?”. But since successfully auditioning for Faulty Towers – The Dining Experience in 2010, Sottile has travelled the world with the show. Sottile said he was excited that the show was back in Australia this week, for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. “With Faulty Towers, every show is different – only a third of the show is scripted, the rest is improvised,” Sottile said.

Resident dirty on dust issue By Alesha Capone A Tarneit mother says roadworks and construction sites near her house are generating so much dust she cannot open windows or hang out washing. Lydia lives on a Davis Road service lane, near Hummingbird Boulevard and Lamington Drive and said the issues with dust began about two years ago. She said there were also “massive dirt piles” on a vacant block near Davis Road which contributed to the issue. She said that although she knew there was a lot of development occurring in the area when she moved in, she would “never” have bought the house if she had known about the dust. Lydia said although she regularly cleaned, the dust was a constant problem. “We haven’t hung washing outside for two years and we just don’t open the windows, even on non-windy days,” she said. “You can see the road outside is red, the footpath is red, the house is red, from the dust.” She said in the past two years, her children had developed bad hay fever, asthma and an oral allergy syndrome which she believed twas caused by the dust. Lydia said she had contacted both Wyndham council and the state Environment Protection Authority about the dust, but “no one cares”. Wyndham council’s director of city operations Stephen Thorpe said the council had received two complaints from residents last year, in relation to dust and noise in the Davis Road area. “Both these residents have been contacted

and the matter is being investigated,” he said. Mr Thorpe said every subdivision planning permit submitted to council was required to have a Site Environmental Management Plan (SEMP) which included plans to control dust. He said the council and EPA conducted site inspections to assess whether SEMPs were being complied with. “If a poor level of compliance is identified, council will require further controls to be implemented,” he said. The EPA did not respond to Star Weekly’s request for comment.

Baby battery death sparks review It’s been four years and two months since Allison Rees held her one-year-old daughter Isabella in her arms and kissed her goodbye for the last time. Isabella was 14 months old when she died after a small, round battery became lodged in her oesophagus. Last Thursday morning, Ms Rees stood outside the Coroners Court and said the family should be celebrating Isabella’s fifth birthday and sending her off to school. Instead, she broke down as she welcomed findings made following an inquest into her daughter’s death, which called for sweeping statewide clinical practice guidelines to be implemented in assessing

children who may have swallowed potentially lethal button batteries. “The thought of living without Bella and seeing her beautiful joyous smile again is heartbreaking,” Ms Rees said. “Even after all this time it still feels like a really bad dream. We believe our beautiful Bella could have been saved.” Isabella was sent home from Sunshine Hospital three times as doctors wrote off vomiting and fever as symptoms of a viral infection before she died on February 4, 2015. Rob, Isabella’s dad, told doctors he thought she might have swallowed something, but this information did not make it into medical

records, coroner Catlin English said in her findings on Thursday. Three days after the first hospital visit, Isabella was running a fever and vomiting. Ms Rees returned to the hospital and showed staff blood clots and dirty nappies containing black, tar-like faeces. On the fourth hospital visit, after Ms Rees found Isabella in tears and covered in blood in her cot, an X-ray discovered a small silver button battery lodged inside her. But by then it was too late. Isabella died hours later despite intensive resuscitation efforts. Ms English, who probed the safety of the batteries, as well as Isabella’s treatment at Sunshine Hospital, found that the medical care

she received was “reasonable”. But she said parents should feel empowered to express their concerns and have their childrens’ cases escalated if they don’t feel they are being heard. Sunshine Hospital has since adopted a Call for Help program which allows families to escalate their concerns. Ms English recommended that the Victorian Paediatric Clinical Network, Safe Care Victoria and the Royal Children’s Hospital develop blanket clinical guidelines for the assessment and management of potentially fatal battery ingestion. Westgate Gym at Altona North is holding the event to raise awareness of depression and anxiety and funds for Beyond Blue. Gym owner Martin Williams said mental health was an important issue in the area as it has many transport and logistics workers. “[With] the high level of stress in the transport industry, long hours, it’s kind of a dangerous field,” he said. “We’ve got all the major transport industries this way; it’s more a heavily male-dominated factory industry. “Beyond Blue recognises the male stress and anxiety that can play a part.” Mr Williams said working out was a way for many to improve mind health.

“When you’re training and you’re enjoying the training environment, it becomes a part of your lifestyle and it’s a really great form of escape,” he said. “We find a lot of members here are very structured in the way they train and their dedication to their training, and it becomes an integral part of their life. “It’s an integral part of both your mental approach to life and your physical ability to be able to cope.” The boot camp is on May 4 from 7.30am, with a second morning session planned if the event gets too big. MY WYNDHAM Deborah Letcher hopes to inspire students to reach their full potential in her new role at Heathdale Christian College. The secondary school principal talks to Esther Lauaki. What’s your connection to Wyndham? My husband and family and I have lived here for a bit over 21 years. It’s the longest that I have lived in any one place. It’s really home now. How long have you been teaching at Heathdale Christian College? I started 21 years ago, but I did have a break in the middle when I was at home with my children. I recently taught in primary school and then, after having children, returned to the other end of the school to teach VCE students. I’ve taught across various parts of the school. Congratulations on being appointed as principal of secondary at Heathdale Christian College. How do you feel? I’m very pleased. I’m currently the acting head of middle school. Our school is restructuring from a Junior/Middle/Senior school structure to a primary and secondary school model. It will be a new role for me.

What are some of the things you love most in your line of work?

I love helping families and young people to develop to their full potential. The joy of being a principal is that you just never know what’s going to come through the door every day. Children are unpredictable … especially in adolescents with all sorts of things going on. I enjoy supporting families and students through those adolescent years and then seeing

them at the end as young adults ready to take on the world.

I am involved in the Wyndham Presbyterian Church.

The world-wide controversy over the alleged links between the use of agricultural chemicals and birth defects is now warming up on the local level as a result of a letter to the ‘Banner’ last week. The subject has special local significance because a company at Laverton North engages in the final process of manufacturing the most controversial of the substances 2,4,5-T.

A young Werribee boy could face years of uncertainty after pricking himself with a discarded syringe he found while playing in the street on Easter Friday. The eight-year-old boy was riding his bike with his 10-year-old brother, when he picked up four used syringes lying in the gutter at Sheringham Dve, Werribee.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a winner, winner chicken dinner It’s taken a while for us to pursue a reader tip-off about Mumchan. But we know immediately upon entering that this is going to be a worthwhile adventure. The display fridge is stacked with all sorts of interesting pickles, preserves and more, all set for taking home. Tonight, Bennie and I are joined by a Team CTS comprising my Star Weekly colleague Maria, her partner Gary and son Matteo. As Gary points out, so chic is Mumchan – but not in an overbearing way – that it looks like it’d be just as home in Seddon, Fitzroy or the CBD. Regular readers will know decor doesn’t feature high on the CTS list of winning factors, but we do enjoy supping in fine surrounds. The big kitchen is mostly open to observation, the staff deal with a busy night with smiling aplomb and the wait times are just right. The menu is studded with dishes familiar to us and many not so. Japchae ($16) is a comforting noodle dish and a tad on the conservative side, chosen – I suspect – by Maria with Matteo in mind. Bennie’s kimchi stew ($14) of kimchi, pork and tofu in spicy broth is fantastic. It’s called – according to Korean-loving CTS buddy Justin – kim chi jigae. Even for myself, not a kimchi zealot by any stretch, the soup is tasty and tangy. Bennie tells me the pork cubes frolicking with the tofu and noodles are short of fall-apart, but that their solidity is just right for his dish.

MuMchan address: 1b Triholm Avenue, Laverton Phone: 7013 4592 Gary’s stonepot bibimbap with beef ($16) looks just right, all the expected nuts and bolts in lovely, ordered display. Fried chicken? Of course! Now, $33 may sound a bit steep for what is described as a “whole chicken”. But so many pieces are there, it seems like more than one chook gone into constructing our shared bowl. Bennie later says he wished we’d gone with one of the flavour coatings – sweet and spicy, sweet soy and cheese snow are available. But as a first-up try at Mumchan, I think we’re all happy with the regular fried chicken. It’s great – and puts the fare served up by many specialist, hipster-style fried chicken places to shame. My own choice of spicy beef soup ($16) is a sensation. Big call: This is the best Korean dish I’ve ever enjoyed. Among the plethora of noodles, egg, mushrooms and mildly spicy broth is plenty of tremendous pork that in barbecue terminology would be referred to as “pulled”. SPORT Bulldogs learn tough lesson By Lance Jenkinson Point Cook took one of the hardest leaps for a side in the Western Region Football League on Saturday. The Bulldogs saw first-hand there is no greater elevation than moving up to the top flight from division 2. Those big bad division 1 sides do not exactly roll out the welcome mat for newcomers. The Bulldogs got handed their initiation by a ruthless St Albans and were out-classed in the skills department and physically battered from go to whoa in a 92-point loss at Saltwater Reserve. Bulldogs coach Ian Denny conceded it was a steep learning curve for his side. “St Albans are a really physical side,” he said. “We had 16-year-olds and 18-year-olds playing their first games and they’re just kids, but they wore it and tried to go back again. “They were a little bit intimidated at times, but they kept at it.” As bitter as that first taste of division 1 football can be, it also has a sweetness that every football side aspires for. There were 16 sides running around in division 2 and 3 at the weekend and most would have gladly traded places with Point Cook. With the first game out of the way, Denny hopes it was an eye-opening experience for his brave young team and it drives them through the rest of the season. After all, this is what the Bulldogs wanted, to be playing among the west’s elite. “I’m sure they’ll learn something from today,” Denny said. “They might think ‘gee, I need to spend an extra half an hour in the gym’ or ‘maybe I need to start working on this or that to get better’. “I’m hoping they take that road and not ‘this is all too hard and I’ve got to go back and play twos’.” Even with the scoreboard blowing out, Point Cook stayed the course and fought it out until its inevitable demise. If there was an act that summed up the Bulldogs, it was that of young ruckman Aker Ali. Ali was taken in a bone jarring tackle by

tough-as-nails St Albans opponent Jarrod Tuppen and driven into the hard surface on a hot day. It hurt Ali and he was visibly shaken, which forced him to retreat to the bench. With his side well in excess of 10 goals down, Ali could have called it a day, but he got back up and played out the game. That was just one instance of many Point Cook players facing the same predicament during 120 minutes of a rude welcoming to top flight football. If Point Cook can survive that initiation relatively unscathed, it should go alright in season one of what it hopes will be a long stay in the west’s toughest division. “You could’ve laid down and got beaten by 25 goals, but we tried to stick to our processes and a few of them started to work a little bit better in the second half,” Denny said. “Our disposal cost us a bit, but that happens when you’ve been battered around a bit.” Point Cook got to unfurl its division 2 premiership flag from last season. It was a proud moment for the Bulldogs, who not so long ago were playing division 4 football in the amateurs. “It’s an awesome day for the club,” Denny said. “This is the difference and it’s why we came to the WRFL. “The crowd we had here was two or three-fold to what we had in the amateurs. “We’re building community awareness around the Point Cook area. “The scoreboard wasn’t good, but we always knew it was going to be a learning curve. “If you had said to the club a few years ago that you’d go from div 4 amateurs and you’d be in div 1 WRFL, people would’ve laughed at you.” Point Cook will use the knowledge gained from its St Albans examination for its next big test away to Caroline Springs at Town Centre Oval on Saturday. Meanwhile, Werribee Districts swiftly moved to the top of the ladder with a 188-point demolition of Albion. Hoppers Crossing went down in a low scoring game by 23 points to Altona.

Goals galore, but beaten Storm remains positive If you told first game Manor Lakes playing coach Dion Lawson that his side would kick 21 goals on Western Region Football League division 2 opening day, he would have scampered around looking for the words to his new club’s theme song and started warming up his vocal chords. The Storm did kick 21 goals, however it was part of an incredible 46-goal game with North Footscray, which saw the Devils kick a whopping 25 goals in a 28-point win at Hansen Reserve on Saturday. While the loss hurt and there were glaring deficiencies from a defensive standpoint, Lawson was fairly positive about what Manor Lakes delivered in its first game of the season. “There’s some big positives to come out of it,” Lawson said. “To kick 21 goals in a game of footy is very good, especially at this level. “Unfortunately it was a bit of a shoot out and it went their way in the end.” Nathan Montague produced a fine captain’s game in the centre for Manor Lakes. Youngster Blake Jago was influential when the Storm made a late charge in the fourth quarter. Ty Priest spearheaded the Storm with seven goals, while Lawson and Jackson Lesko kicked four apiece.

It was the one-per centers that let Manor Lakes down. “In the first quarter alone, they would’ve kicked four or five goals from our direct

turnovers,” Lawson said. The WRFL rolled out the new 6-6-6 rule that has been used in the AFL this season. Considering no other teams in division 2 cracked triple figures, it now has to gauge if the new rule had a role to play. “I’m not sure why it [the high scoring] happened and I’m not sure why that was the scoring end,” Lawson said. “There was a little bit of a breeze, but it wasn’t a massive breeze.” Even though it was only one game, Lawson got a fair indication of what direction he wants to take Manor Lakes in the coming weeks. He is adamant there will be some positional changes implemented in time for the huge local derby against Wyndhamvale at Howqua Reserve this Saturday. “There’s some things we learned from today and there were a few positions that people got found out in,” Lawson said. “We’ll go back to the drawing board and say this is how we want to play, this is how we want to change a few things and if you do it, you do it or if you don’t, you won’t be in the team.” It is a massive round two game for both Manor Lakes and Wyndhamvale. The Storm will be striving for their first win of the campaign, while the Falcons will want

to keep their muscles flexed after upsetting Yarraville-Seddon in a 13-point win on Saturday. Aside from what it means for both sides in terms of the ladder, it will also be a big community event. “It’s a big game for the football clubs and the community as well,” Lawson said. “Having two teams close by each other and there’s a bit of hype around both teams, we’re hoping for a good turnout from the community. “I would assume it will be pretty hotly contested and hopefully a good clean footy game and I think it will go some way to dictating where both teams stand. “If we’re 0-2, it would put a dampener on the start of our season, but if we can knock them off, it shows we’re up and about and where we should be.” Meanwhile, Point Cook Centrals made a triumphant start to life in division 2, beating West Footscray by 39 points. In division 3, Glen Orden had a thumping 88-point win over Wyndham Suns. Tarneit got off to a flying start with a 79-point win over Braybrook. Laverton beat North Sunshine by 204 points. Hoppers Crossing steps up for a tough initiation Hoppers Crossing took its first tentative steps in the Football Federation Victoria women’s state league 1 soccer on Sunday. The Reds were promoted to the top tier after swooping on the second-division title last season, losing just one game in the process. The Reds faced a tough opening to the season – travelling to play Melbourne Knights. The Reds were able to return home with a valuable point after sharing the spoils in a 0-0 draw at Knights Stadium. Hoppers Crossing will play its home opener on Sunday against Melbourne University at Grange Reserve. There were goals to be found in the women’s state league 4 with West Point mauling Maribyrnong Swifts 5-1. Yasmine Mohamed was on target for West Point with two goals, while Jodi Hayward, Hajara Diyab and Hawa Dahir got in on the scoring act. In the men’s state leagues, Point Cook has found the going tough in the opening three

rounds. The Jets have just one point in the bank in state league 3 and have sunk to second last. They were comprehensively out-played 3-0 by Williamstown away on Saturday. Point Cook will be searching for its goal scoring touch when it visits Craigieburn City on Saturday. In state league 4, Truganina Hornets needed only a single goal to bring down Laverton. The Hornets have seven points from three games and are third on the ladder. They will face a struggling Melbourne City at Arndell Park Reserve on Saturday. In state league 5, West Point was beaten 2-1 by top-of-the-ladder Barnstoneworth United. West Point has a win, a draw and a loss after three rounds. Wyndham United remains bottom after a 4-0 thrashing from Maribyrnong Greens. In NPL 2 west, Werribee City was on the losing side of the equation for the first time this season.

Devils unleash their fire By Lance Jenkinson A full strength Werribee Devils has cracked the code of back-to-back Big V basketball women’s state championship premiers Sunbury Jets. For the first time this season, the Devils went into a game with a full complement of players and showed what they can achieve together with a stunning 81-62 win on the road at Boardman Stadium on Sunday. Devils coach Reece Potter said it was a big day in the evolution of his team. “We’re really happy with the result, to beat a team that’s been really successful over a number of years,” he said. “It just shows to our group that we know we can be competitive at that level. “We certainly don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves, but it’s something to build on.” Werribee showed its potency with a jaw-dropping 58-point first half to lead by 21 at half-time. Everything clicked for the Devils on the day they welcomed second import Alexyz Vaioletama to the fold. Their shooting was spectacular from all parts of the zones. “We shot the ball well and we found open shots,” Potter said. “We really shared the ball around, which was good to see. “It was a really strong first half that put us in a good spot and we did enough to hang on for the rest of it.” The big-name recruits came to the fore for Werribee. Import Alisia Jenkins, playing in her second game for the Devils, was nigh on unstoppable. She recorded an efficient 24 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two blocks. “People are going to really struggle to guard her quickness and athleticism,” Potter said. “She’d be one of the fastest players I’ve seen at this level and she’s a big, so it’s a lethal combination.” Sarah Elworthy was commanding at the point, finishing with 16 points and six assists. Vaioletama had a solid outing in her first game for Werribee with 12 points and six rebounds. “Our imports played unselfishly, while Sarah did a great job as our point guard,” Potter said. Georgia Tauschke had a big impact with her long range shooting. She hit four of her six three-point attempts to finish with 14 points and five rebounds. Werribee’s (3-1) next test will come in a blockbuster on April 27 against Casey Cavaliers (3-1) at Eagle Stadium. Meanwhile, it was a mixed weekend for Werribee in the men’s state championship. The Devils opened their account with a thrilling 99-98 win over Blackburn Vikings at Mullum Mullum Stadium on Saturday night. Sprintcar focus a great move While relishing dual sporting passions, Charles Hunter could not fully commit to his two loves, football or sprintcar racing. The 37-year-old had the best of both worlds for 19 years, enjoying the team aspect of football as a player with Westbourne Grammarians in the Victorian Amateur Football Association and feeling the energy of being behind the wheel of his sprintcar. The Werribee resident drew the curtain on his football career at the end of last season, bowing out with a best-on-ground performance for the Warriors against Hawthorn Amateurs. From that moment, Hunter put all his chips into a sprintcar career. It’s no surprise he enjoyed his best season yet in 2018-19. With all the skills to succeed in sprintcars and a singular focus, Hunter instantly became a better and more tactical driver. In the opening nine rounds, Hunter had two podium finishes, something he had previously achieved only once in his 19-year career. In the 10th round, on his home track at Geelong Avalon Raceway, Hunter earned pole position in the feature race after a win and a fourth place in the heats. Hunter completed a dream night in the Maxim car he built for the Grand Annual Classic, avoiding a late-race caution to lead the 25-lap race from start to finish and claim his maiden feature-race victory. “The fact that I won my first feature race is still so surreal,” Hunter said. “I can’t describe the emotion of being able to do my first wing dance at my home track in front of my family and friends.” Hunter placed a career-best fourth in the Eureka Garages & Sheds Series points standings for the season. Styling I must admit being wrong when first sighting Jimny at the Queensland launch, feeling that it was just too boxy. But after seeing it on the road and watching the attention our test Jimnys got from passers-by I’ve fallen in love with it. The interior has a neat old-style dashboard, but it’s bang up to date with big easy-to-read instruments and a infotainment screen. Powertrain Power comes from a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 100 horsepower (75 kW in Aussie numbers) and 130 Nm of torque. The torque peak is at a relatively high 4000 rpm, but it feels fine from about 2000 and there’s a nice spread of grunt in all normal driving ranges. The engine sits in front of either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. All four wheels are driven by way of a transfer case with 2H, 4H and 4L modes that are selected by a lever on the centre tunnel.

Safety Small … tough … ladder chassis … rigid-axles … heavy duty suspension. All are excellent features in a genuine 4WD. But make it very difficult to build a tiny vehicle that collapses well in a crash. The result is that Jimny only has a three-star crash rating. Driving One more gear in the manual and a two more in the auto would have been appreciated on

the open road, particularly on motorways. Around town the manual and auto both feel fine and the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) levels are noticeably lower than on the old Jimny so the interior is more sedate than you might expect. It’s not to small-hatch standards but surprisingly close. Handling is good with levels of grip and ease of control at speeds that belying that fact that it’s a body on chassis 4WD. The steering feels a bit vague at times as on

old-style truck-based 4WDs. The secret is to avoid correcting every tiny little movement and let the Jimny make its own corrections. Strong crosswinds do move it around at times, something that would be very tiring on a long trip. As part of the media launch in January we did serious off-road driving on moguls and steep, deeply rutted hill trails. The new Jimny has even better approach / ramp-over / departure angles than the old, which were already excellent. Jimny takes you places where other alleged SUVs would get well and truly stuck and does it so easily that it feels more like a stroll in the park than a battle with the terrain.
