The median weekly rent in traditionally affordable suburbs such as Werribee and Hoppers Crossing has risen by almost 25 per cent across a five-year period, according to new data. The Department of Health and Human Services last week released its Rental Report for the December quarter of last year, which showed the median weekly rent in Werribee and Hoppers Crossing during the quarter was $360. In comparison, in December 2013, the median weekly rent in Werribee and Hoppers Crossing was $290. From December 2013 to December last year, Werribee and Hoppers Crossing experienced the third-highest rise in median weekly rents in metropolitan Melbourne (Thornbury topped the list with a 29.2 per rise). Also in the west, Melton placed fifth on the list, with median weekly rents rising 22.2 per cent across five years, from $270 to $330. Seddon and Yarraville placed ninth, with median weekly rents rising by 20.8 per cent, from $385 to $465. Tenants Victoria policy officer Natalie Rutherford said the sharp rise in rents in fringe areas increased the levels of housing stress experienced by vulnerable families. “A family with two children receiving Newstart, an income of $793, and renting a three-bedroom house in Keilor pays more than 44 per cent of their income just to put a roof over their heads,” she said. “Affordable private housing is hard to find, badly maintained and expensive to heat.” A report released by The Northern and Western Homelessness Networks earlier this year found that the homelessness service system is experiencing an increased demand for emergency accommodation. It found that increasing rates of homelessness were linked to Melbourne’s housing crisis, particularly to the severe and growing lack of affordable housing. The report stated this had led to an increase in the number of people seeking help. The report stated that of the 24,828 people who identified as homeless in Victoria on census night in 2016, 41 per cent were recorded as living in Melbourne’s north and west, including 730 Wyndham residents.

Wyndham police crack down on brawl culture Wyndham police have vowed to adopt a “zero-tolerance” approach to anti-social behavior such as public brawls. Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches said frontline police had ramped up efforts to issue infringement notices for street crimes. He said offenders could face a fine of $645 for throwing a punch, starting a fight, disorderly conduct or spitting, or a fine of $322 for using threatening words or failing to move on when directed.

“We’re trying to get ahead of a behavioural curve that’s occurring in Wyndham,” he said. “That behavioural curve is related to a preparedness by youth aged 16 to 19 to basically commit a range of street offending, with a perception that they can do so without facing any ramifications. “But people need to be held accountable for their behaviour. If you’re prepared to throw a punch and start a brawl in a public place, we [police] are not prepared to use discretion.”

Senior Sergeant Riches said police in Wyndham were “starting to see a few incidents where that preparedness to fight is occurring”. “We saw this as an opportunity to send a message that this is the kind of behavior where we’re going to adopt a zero-tolerance approach going forward,” he said. Pizza luck in cash drop By Esther Lauaki Hunger pangs could have cost two men $20,000 at a Tarneit pizza shop. The pair walked into Pizza Tabrabane recently after a quick stop at a bank to collect money they said was for a house deposit. The shop’s security cameras captured the moment the wad of cash, in a white envelope, fell to the floor from one of the men’s pockets before they left with their meals. Shop owner Shakir Arafat, who started the business two years ago, said one of his staff found the parcel and handed it in when he returned from a delivery. “The guys came to buy a pizza and had no idea that they had dropped the money on the floor,” Mr Arafat told Star Weekly. He said that about 15 minutes after they left, the men came back “really stressed”. “They said they had dropped some money … they said the $20,000 was collected from their friends and family and they put it into the bank,” he said. “They didn’t want to leave it in the car because they thought it wouldn’t be safe.” Mr Arafat said he wasn’t aware of the money until his driver came back and said he’d found the parcel on his way out. Mr Arafat said he was thrilled to deliver the good news to the men, who had left their contact details. “When I opened the envelope, there was a lot of money in there,” he said. “The guys were so relieved when I called them and they came back later in the evening. “I made him count it in front of me … whether it was $1 or $100, I wanted to make sure that they knew all the money was there.” Mr Arafat said he turned down the men’s offer of a reward “I didn’t want any money,” he said. “I’m Sri Lankan and have lived in Truganina for 10 years. “We work hard and we earn our money here.”

Just the ticket for Tarneit man “Right-o” were the first words a Tarneit man mustered when told he had won nearly a million dollars last week. The first division Saturday TattsLotto winner was on his morning commute to work on March 25 when Bronwyn Spencer, a Tatts official, called with the happy news. The man, who asked not to be named, was one of four division one-winning entries from the March 23 draw. Each winner pocketed about $968,000. The Tarneit man won $150 in division four in the same draw. He revealed that he had been marking his entries with the same numbers for decades. “It’s great news,” he said. “I’ve been playing these numbers every week – I have been playing them for years. I’m so glad they finally came up. “They are just random numbers that I chose long ago … couldn’t tell you why.” He said he would “sit down and think about” how he was going to spend his windfall. The winner purchased his 12-game entry at Tarneit Gardens Lotto. The winning numbers were 29, 9, 32, 33, 37 and 39, with supplementary numbers 27 and 11. Tarneit Gardens Lotto team member Caroline Dingey said she was thrilled to have sold the winning ticket. “I’ve been telling everyone we’ve sold a division one-winning entry and it’s been busy in store,” Ms Mingey said. “We sold a winning syndicate share in TattsLotto and a Powerball division one-winning entry in the past, but it’s been a few years since we’ve had a win. “It’s great. ‘Paradise’ for sale By Alesha Capone A glamourous four-bedroom, resort-style Sanctuary Lakes mansion could set a new residential property price record for the area. Eleven Pelican Point Road, is being offered for sale through Sanctuary Lakes Real Estate with an asking price of between $2.65 million and $2.85 million. The record price in Sanctuary Lakes is $2.65 million, for a house in Greg Norman Drive sold in 2017. Sanctuary Lakes Real Estate director Fadi Saad said the Pelican Point house, on about 865 square metres, was known as “The Elysian” due to its many “paradise-like” features. Mr Saad said the house featured a geometric curved staircase handcrafted in New Zealand. The three-level house has four bathrooms, a heated in-ground swimming pool with views of the waterfront, an entrance with a crystal chandelier, a double-car garage and a self-contained studio with kitchen and bathroom. “It’s totally bespoke all the way through – nothing in this house is standard,” Mr Saad said. “It’s a resort-style home with fantastic views in a triple-A location. “From a big picture perspective, a property like this represents extremely good value for what it has to offer. “If you were to find something else, in Williamstown or similar parts of Melbourne which could offer a similar lifestyle, you would be looking to pay in excess of $5 million to $6 million – and that might not even get you living on a lake with a golf course nearby, like this property is.” Mr Saad said that the house’s owners were downsizing. Road works to wrap up The end of traffic snarls along Tarneit Road could be in sight with lights and signals expected to be fully operational within the next fortnight. The $6 million project – which included an extra lane in each direction between Hogans Road and Caraleena Drive, traffic lights at the Good News Lutheran College entrance, and a doubling in the size of the Tarneit and Hogans roads intersection – was originally slated to be finished by October 2017, and has since missed a number of revised deadlines. Design changes to avoid disrupting water, gas, electricity and drainage systems and delays with VicRoads and Powercor in turning on the lights have been among the reasons for the 2.5-year hold-up on the project. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said a “temporary arrangement” had been made to power some of the lights and the traffic signals at the intersection of Tarneit and Hogans roads. “The actual roadworks have been completed, however we are waiting on the finalisation of the street lighting and signals to be completed,” Cr Shaw posted on Facebook. Council operations director Stephen Thorpe said VicRoads would test the hardware and software on the traffic lights and, if this is successful, will switch them on by mid-April. Esther Lauaki

Residents tire of ‘parking chaos’ By Alesha Capone A Manor Lakes man says residential streets near the Wyndham Vale train station are being subjected to “parking chaos”. Chakri Chayanam said train commuters were parking their vehicles in nearby streets, including Eureka Drive and Field Street, once carparks at the station filled up on weekday mornings.

He said the streets were also clogged by parents dropping off children at school. Mr Chayanam said there are no parking restrictions in the streets, so commuters and parents were not breaking the law, but the increased traffic had resulted in “parking chaos” for residents. He said residents not only had to deal with the traffic congestion, but some feared their own cars would be scratched or damaged as a

result. He said he knew of one accident – when a car hit a vehicle parked in Eureka Drive last month. Mr Chayanam also said someone had been “vandalising” cars parked in residential streets. He claimed car tyres were being slashed, forcing owners to pay “hefty bills” to replace the tyres. A state government spokesperson said that the government had last year promised to

deliver 1600 new and upgraded carparks at Wyndham Vale, Werribee, Watergardens and Tarneit stations. “It’s all part of our plan to make it easier for passengers to find a carpark and free up local streets,” the spokesperson said. However, a timeline for the construction of the new carparks has not been released. Wyndham council did not respond to Star Weekly’s request for comment.

Dog day afternoon You would have to be barking mad to miss the Melbourne Dog Lovers Show, which will be held in Carlton next month. Since 2013, the annual show has attracted almost 200,000 canine fans through the gates. At this year’s show, more than 600 dogs from mor than 120 breeds will attend. The program includes a K9 Ninja Star competition; skipping, frisbee and drag-racing dog shows, a doggy high jump and educational talks from Dr Danni Dusek, Dr Lisa Chimes, Dr Katrina Warren and Kelly Gill. Australian Working Dog Rescue will host the Sheepdog Speed Trials and the BlackHawk DockDogs competition has dogs launching themselves off a dock into a 100,000 litre pool. More than 40 clubs will feature in the Breed Showcase and famous Instagram pooches will be present for meet-and-greets. Melbourne Dog Lovers Show chief executive Jason Humphris said this year, for the first time, the event had partnered with the PETstock Assist team to run the Dog Adoption Zone. More than 30 rescue groups and shelters

will provide information for prospective pet owners, who will be able to meet pets needing a home. Visitors can also experience Speed Dating for Dog Lovers, demos from street artists who will be painting pooches and free doggy face-painting for children. Westbourne learns a new way There is no such thing as detention at Westbourne Grammar School. It was scrapped eight years ago after the same students ended up in detention every Friday. “We found it didn’t really help,” says Divine Emezie, an impressively articulate year 11 student. “It just fuelled their animosity towards the school and their peers.” Instead Westbourne, in the booming suburb of Truganina, introduced a strategy also used in the criminal justice system known as “restorative practice”, which repairs relationships rather than punishes.

Senior students are part of the mediation process. “At Westbourne the student looks up to the year 11 and 12s and they are more likely to respect that,” Divine says. Year 12 student Ruby Tripodi already has a title that is a mouthful: she is a “restorative practice facilitator”. Qualifying for this role is no mean feat. All year 10 students complete the first stage of restorative practice but stages two and three are voluntary in year 11. Ruby says she might be called upon to help resolve – for example – turf disputes between year 7s and 8s squabbling over space to play

downball, a game also known as four square that is a cultural tradition at Westbourne. “We might try to set up an agreement that some [year levels] play some lunches,” Ruby says. Principal Meg Hansen says restorative practice has made a “massive difference” at the school, which has students from more than 40 nationalities. It’s one of the reasons she believes student performance has improved. Westbourne Grammar is the independent school winner of The Age’s inaugural Schools that Excel award for Melbourne’s west.

For the past two years in a row, students have obtained a median study score of 34, a first for the school. This puts Westbourne several points above the statewide median of 30. The students The Age spoke to attribute the schools’ improved VCE performance to a culture of celebrating success and teachers going “the extra mile”. “When someone is doing well they don’t get backlash from friends,” says Year 11 student Shakeel Manuel. “I feel that’s slightly different in some places.” – The Age

Year 12 is a big year for any high school student, but for Louis-Jak Middlebrook, it came with challenges most teens don’t have to deal with. The 19-year-old Werribee resident had a tougher year than most last year, with his mother dying from breast cancer while he was doing year 12 at Wyndham Central College. Despite his heartbreak, Louis-Jak performed well in his final exams and was accepted into a diploma of furniture design at RMIT. “My teachers saw how hard it was for me to get through the year, but I did make it and I didn’t give up,” he said. “Friends and family and my girlfriend were real sources of motivation, but also just knowing my mum wouldn’t have wanted me to give up. She would have rather me finished year 12 and get it done.” His tenacity was recognised recently when Louis-Jak was one of five recipients of the Tim

No love for Aircraft train station By Goya Dmytryshchak It has no toilets, some people have given up trying to find a carpark there and the rain blows straight into the so-called shelter on the platform. Aircraft station at Laverton has been ranked as either the worst or second worst in Victoria since 2015 in the RACV’s biennial On Track survey. In 2015, the station was ranked the state’s worst with a rating of 4.86 out of 10. In 2017, commuters disliked Aircraft even more and its rating fell to 4.20. It only dropped

its worst-place ranking because Donnybrook was rated more poorly. RACV senior planner Stuart Outhred said this year commuters were asked to have their say on how the station can be fixed. “The concerns already identified through the On Track survey included security fears, problems accessing a station or finding a car park, overcrowded trains and poor connections to other transport networks,” he said. “It is only through the input of the people who use these facilities … that we can gain a true picture of what the problems are.” Aircraft’s main issues identified in the last

survey were lack of toilets, difficulty finding a carpark and inadequate shelter and seating. Cath Stephensen uses the station five days a week and said she had given up trying to get a park at the station. “Because of the traffic congestion on Point Cook Road and because of the lack of car parking facilities at the station, I choose to walk or to cycle to the station,” she said. “Walking onto the platform is just like something out of the 1920s. The footpath’s broken, it’s very narrow, the railings either side of the footpath are inadequate and inappropriate.

“I lock my bike to the fence … there’s just no bike security. “There’s no toilet facilities on the station – you have to go into the shopping centre. “There is completely inadequate shelter – there is one little box and the rain actually blows into it.” Hobsons Bay councillor Colleen Gates said the council wants the state government to fund improvements at Aircraft as part of the level crossing removal. In leaps and bounds Students and staff at The Grange P-12 College in Hoppers Crossing have celebrated the official opening of their new gymnasium. The gym, at the school’s Callistemon campus, has been developed in partnership with the Belgravia Group, a privately-owned group of companies which includes businesses with a focus on improving health and wellbeing. College principal David Smillie said that in January, the school’s gym underwent a “complete redesign” to become an “Olympic-style gymnastics facility”. Mr Smillie said the gym was “fitted out with state-of-the-art equipment catering for beginning to elite level gymnastics coaching”. “Research tells us that there’s a positive link between children being active and playing sport and their ability to get better marks and learning outcomes at school,” he said. He said the school’s Gymnasium Program

would assist students in the early years of their schooling. “Our college has developed specialist gymnastics classes for our prep to grade 3 students who will engage weekly in programs designed to stimulate fine motor skills, co-ordination and perceptual motor skills to enhance their learning,” he said. “This program will also lead into our Sports Science Academy programs enhancing balancing and co-ordination skills.” Mr Smillie said Belgravia Kids, which is part of the Belgravia Group, would manage the gym outside of school hours and offer programs and coaching in gymnastics. Hoppers CFA busy in the west By Esther Lauaki Hoppers Crossing CFA is among the three busiest fire brigades in the region, responding to more than 50 incidents a month, new data shows. CFA emergency response times for October to December reveal Hoppers Crossing brigade responded to 164 incidents in the three months – the third busiest brigade in district 14. Melton, which covers Melbourne’s north-west and parts of the western suburbs, was the busiest in the district with 219

incidents, followed by Craigieburn, responding to 168 calls for help. Hoppers Crossing CFA’s average response time was eight minutes and 22 seconds, with 87 per cent of incidents responded to within the required eight minutes. The data shows Werribee CFA responded to 128 call-outs and Point Cook brigade responded to 100. Werribee brigade’s response times were the second quickest in the district, averaging six minutes and 43 seconds, with 94 per cent of incidents responded to within the required eight minutes.

Statewide, CFA compliance with the eight-minute standard sits at 87.5 per cent – below its 90 per cent target. Victorian CFA crews responded to 6297 emergency incidents in the October-December period. Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said the data showed a need for reform.

“We’re committed to implementing a positive plan that will ensure both our career and volunteer firefighters are supported to keep doing their great work,” Ms Neville said. “We need a system in place that allows for us to plan ahead of growth occurring in communities, so we can keep Victorians safe. “We’ll continue to invest in our fire services to ensure they have the resources and training they need to perform the vital task of protecting the lives and property of Victorians, just like they’ve done this fire season.” Details: bit.ly/2TJb58J

Network into a busy life Leisure Networks, which supports people with a disability, will host a family fun day at Chirnside Park next week. The organisation, which has offices in Geelong, Glenroy, Forrest Hill and Heidelberg, recently opened a new office in Werribee. Leisure Networks chief executive Libby Mears said the office would serve as a contact point for people with a disability, their families and carers who live in the west. Ms Mears said that Leisure Networks assisted people with a disability to connect with sport, recreation, learning life skills such as cooking and travelling, independent living, financial planning management, pre-employment skills and employment. She said Leisure Networks was also home to support co-ordinators who could help people with a disability get the most out of their NDIS plan. Leisure Networks manager for NDIS service

development Cam Libbis said the upcoming family fun day would involve ‘come and try’ activities, games and a free sausage sizzle. Inferno clean-up drags on By Benjamin Millar A toxic chemical cocktail remains at a Tottenham warehouse seven months after last year’s inferno. Work is only just beginning on the excavation of at least 500 cubic metres of contaminated sediment from a 600-metre section of Stony Creek. Melbourne Water is diverting the creek via a pipe while excavators dig out toxic sludge built up between the fire site and Paramount Road. The contaminated sediment is being

temporarily stockpiled at the fire site ahead of future disposal to a secure landfill. Maribyrnong council, the lead authority in the wake of the fire, directed questions on the clean-up of the fire site to the Environment Protection Authority. An EPA spokesman said the owners of the fire site had been issued a number of statutory notices requiring them to install security fences and ensure controls are in place so no further run-off can enter stormwater drains. But work is yet to get underway on the massive clean-up of the toxic mess left after the

suspicious fire tore through the warehouse, igniting thousands of drums of illegally stored chemicals. The EPA spokesman said preliminary assessment work was underway at the site. He did not respond to questions regarding a proposed timeline for the work or what steps could be taken to force the site to be cleaned up if no action was taken. EPA testing of creek water and sediment samples taken on February 15 showed improved Stony Creek water quality, but poor results in terms of creek sediments, with

high concentrations of chemicals including hydrocarbons. Inner-west residents have continued to complain of poor health in the wake of the fire and expressed frustration at the time being taken for clean-up efforts. Maribyrnong chief executive Stephen Wall said a new Stakeholder Advisory Group was monitoring recovery actions and highlighting areas of unmet need. He said the council would pursue the state government to cover the costs of dealing with the fire’s aftermath.

VU’s game of drones Victoria University Polytechnic is working towards including drone technology into its construction courses and on-site studies. During a recent open day at the polytechnic, in Hoppers Lane, Werribee, the Institute for Drone Technology’s chief executive Dr Joel Spencer gave a presentation on his organisation’s work with Victoria University. “We are partnering with them to look at ways in which drone technology can be incorporated into the construction industry,” Dr Spencer said. He said the institute helped governments, councils, universities, TAFEs and businesses use drone technology in the workplace. He said this included using drones to improve safety and foster innovation. “A drone can go places where it’s dangerous for people to go,” Dr Spencer said. Also at the open day, the state government announced $1.3 million in funding for the

Werribee campus to train civil construction workers. The program, being delivered in partnership with the builders of the West Gate Tunnel Project, CPB and John Holland, will fund equipment to support training in a tunnel-simulated environment for students, who want to find employment working on major infrastructure projects. “The tunnelling equipment will provide students with an important opportunity to get practical training and experience that will provide a stepping stone for future employment,” Werribee MP Tim Pallas said. Phil takes the world in his stride By Esther Lauaki Phil Bagshaw wears his love of walking on his sleeves. The 71 year-old from the United Kingdom has clocked up about 20,000 kilometres walking around the world. He has sewn patches on his jacket for each competitive event he’s conquered in the past 35 years. Mr Bagshaw arrived in Melbourne in January to visit Werribee-based family and jumped at the opportunity to take part in the five-kilometre Wyndham Vale Parkrun earlier

this year. He said his mission was to encourage people of all ages to “get out and walk”. “I want to promote walking because of the health benefits,” Mr Bagshaw said. “I started walking in 1984 with the Long Distance Walkers Association in the UK. “Walking is my life … I walk 20 kilometres a day, every single day. “I get up in the morning and put on my walking shoes … I discover something or someone new every day.” Mr Bagshaw said he finds motivation in “fun, fitness and friendship”.

“Walking brings all nationalities together for a common goal,” he said. “We will often talk about what’s going on in the world.” He is organising an international long-distance walking event in France next year to celebrate his 72nd birthday. Victorians are being urged to get physical as part of the Premier’s Active April health initiative. Teen’s WOW moment Hoppers Crossing teenager Tyler-Jo Parson says she entered last year’s Way Out West youth photography competition “just for fun”. But the 16-year-old said she was blown away when one of her images was announced as a winner. “I was really excited and I certainly wasn’t expecting it,” she said. Her winning photo, which was taken in Hoppers Crossing, featured one of her friends sitting near some street art. She won a certificate and JB Hi-Fi gift voucher in the Way Out West competition. Tyler-Jo said she had always liked taking photos as a child, and in the past few years had started taking more photos while out with friends or visiting an interesting site. She said she also planned to enter this year’s Way Out West competition. Wyndham council’s libraries and youth services team is running the competition,

which is open to people aged between 12 and 25 years of age who live, work, study or visit Wyndham. Competition categories include life in Wyndham, landscape, black and white, colour, the funniest photograph and the overall winner. Entries close Friday, May 17. MY WYNDHAM Point Cook resident Sudhir Juneja is a community worker who volunteers for many causes. He chats with Alesha Capone. Tell me a bit about yourself. I live in Point Cook and I work in Altona. My family has lived in Point Cook for about 10 years. We love the feel of the place, before that we lived in Altona and Richmond. We needed a bigger place and needed something that felt like home, hence we chose Point Cook. My wife is an IT professional. We have two daughters, both are at university, one is doing medicine and one doing business studies. I’m a local business coach and consultant, operating as Brands and Biz. I started this business to help many home-based, small and medium-sized businesses in Wyndham and the western suburbs. I also run a business networking group. All this is being done, along with my supply chain management job.

I’m a founder of the Western Gymkhana Club which operates in Point Cook, Tarneit and Manor Lakes. Six or seven people started the group and we now have around 70 families It’s a families-based group, with a focus on recreation and social needs of families. We meet a few times a month and work with a few other community groups. The motto of the club is “building community – together”. We also do a bit of community work with volunteer lawyers and family workers, who help us with people who are experiencing family violence. As well, with family violence, I saw that there is a need for work at a grassroots level, where we can catch the signs early. I’ve organised a group to work on this, which will have its first meeting on March 30. I have experience with council, serving in two

advisory committees. I really feel the council staff are working very hard for the area. I have also started my own volunteering webpage. I try to bring different issues to the attention of local MPs and councillors, such as local safety issues, and the milk prices for farmers and its sell price of Coles, etc. I also manage a community social media

group on Facebook with others, it’s a community group called Point Cook Indian Community, open to all people from all cultures. We keep the community upbeat. What do you like about Point Cook? The feeling of the community in Point Cook

is beautiful, I’ve never seen it in the four other suburbs I’ve lived in. For example, recently a family who rented a home, who had no contents insurance, lost many of their belongings in a house fire. The local community got together and raised nearly $20,000 for them. The Western Gymkhana Club straight away pledged $500.

Vandals caused $1500 damage to Laverton’s Memorial Hall in Railway Avenue early on Friday morning when they smashed 42 windows and broke nearly every wall panel around the building. Tradesmen have fixed the windows and Shire workers should have the wall panels replaced this week.

Local residents were recovering from shock this week after armed bandits burst into a Laverton North poultry shop, last Wednesday. The gun wielding bandits struck Eatmore Poultry shop at Pipe Rd and ordered terrified customers to the floor before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money.

The Federal Government is being pressured to come to the party and support the upgrade of the Princes Freeway West after the Premier formally committed the State Government to the project last week. During a Princes Freeway Action Committee breakfast at the Werribee Events Centre on Friday, Mr Kennett announced the State Government would earmark $118 million to the long-overdue upgrade in the State Budget in May.

Kids will get a glimpse of a jockey’s life as part of the Saddle Up school holiday program at Werribee Racecourse. The full-day program, on April 16, for primary school-aged children will be packed full of horse-related activities including learning how to ride from a leading jockey and racing a “pool noodle horse” in a mock Werribee Cup race. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a local favourite still going strong There’s no doubt the old Sunshine station – and its gloomy, even spooky tunnel/underpass through to City Place – deserved and needed to be replaced. But given the new station edifice involves a much less direct and stair-heavy route, I wondered what impact the new arrangements would have on City Place and the surrounding businesses and neighbourhood. Surely the curious would be much less inclined to venture to “the other side of the tracks” from Sunshine central and its much more numerous shops and eateries? But something rather nice appears to be happening in the face of this enforced “separation”. It’s now possible to consider City Place and the adjacent Sun Crescent as an entirely different neighbourhood. It’s very laid back, with none of the hustle and bustle of Sunshine proper. I’d not go so far as to suggest this neighbourhood is prospering or constantly buzzing, but it does seem to be getting on with doing its own thing. It’s tempting to describe the overall vibe as African, but that would be misleading. There’s hairdressers/barbers, a cafe, groceries and an arts space. The fine and long-term Chinese eatery Dragon Express remains in place, while around the corner is the utterly fabulous Panjali Banana Leaf Malaysian Restaurant, as well as a kebab shop, an Ethiopian place and a Sri Lankan outlet.

I’m guessing it’s also on the ball come dinner time. The classic vegetarian combo yetsom beyaynetu is awesome here – as good as any I’ve tried. Lentils/pulses three different ways; the familiar carrot/potato, beetroot and greens; sprightly salad – all beautifully cooked and presented, all in just the right quantities for a wonderfully balanced meal. This winning offering costs a supremely cheap $12. But if you visit Ghion on Wednesday – day or night – it’ll cost you a mere $10. Among the various meat dishes, lega tibs ($13) is lovely. It’s a tomato-based, zingy concoction with good lamb chunks and the onion providing nice crunch through being just the right side of al dente. Wait times at Ghion are spot on – long enough to bespeak much care in the kitchen, short enough to ward off hungry impatience. SPORT Werribee players stick with their seasoned skipper If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That was the thinking for Werribee players when they voted on the 2019 captaincy for the Victorian Football League club. Michael Sodomaco has been re-appointed for a fifth season as skipper. He has proven his leadership qualities time and again. The 27-year-old has done so while leading the way with his outstanding play on the field, whether it be in a midfield role or as a small defender. The captaincy endorsement of his peers is something that Sodomaco values greatly. “I’ve been fortunate enough to do it for a few years, but I think this is actually the first time I’ve been voted in by the playing group specifically,” he said. “It’s always nice to get a player-driven accolade because, at the end of the day, they’re your mates and the blokes you’re playing with.”

Three-time Bruce Montgomery Trophy winner Matt Hanson will take on the vice-captaincy. Sodomaco is thrilled to have Hanson by his side as vice captain. “Matty is a terrific footballer, but even more so a really terrific team person,” Sodomaco said. “He’s going to slot into [the vice-captaincy] really seamlessly. “I’m hoping I can impart a bit of wisdom and a bit of knowledge and help him take the next step with his leadership.” Nick Coughlan, Matthew Munro, Dom Brew and Timm House will round out the leadership group. House will tackle his leadership role with the fresh insight of an outsider’s perspective. He arrived at Werribee in the off season after time spent in Geelong’s system in the AFL. “Timm has essentially played under the likes of [Geelong stars] Joel Selwood and Paddy

Dangerfield, so I’m looking forward to picking his brain a bit and learning a few things, as I’m sure he’ll have some new ideas,” Sodomaco said. Werribee will open the season under lights against North Melbourne at Avalon Airport Oval from 7pm on Saturday. It will be Mark Williams’ first official game in charge as coach of Werribee. As a coach, he led Port Adelaide Power to its first AFL premiership in 2004. More recently, Williams has worked as an assistant coach with GWS Giants and Richmond. Star onballer Michael Barlow will be making his return to Werribee after an impressive career at AFL level with Fremantle and Gold Coast Suns. Warriors hit by injuries By Lance Jenkinson Hoppers Crossing coach Steven Kretiuk has jokingly said his club should sit out pre-season practice matches next season. For a second year running, the Warriors are counting the cost of a brutal practice match circuit which included season-ending injuries to Jordan Moody and Lachlan McDonald. Moody went down with a third ACL and McDonald fractured a cheekbone that caused bleeding on the brain. The Warriors will also be without Matthew Walson who is unavailable due to a change in work commitments. “They’re great people to have around the club, so hopefully we can get them involved in some other way,” Kretiuk said. Hoppers Crossing will have to put its new-found depth to the test as a result of the pre-season injuries. The Warriors are better placed for cover this season because of the emergence of some of their homegrown players into the senior ranks. “We’ve got a bit of depth now,” Kretiuk said. “We’ve got some great kids coming through. “This is the first year since I’ve been here that we’ve had more than one or two come up from the under-19s. “We’ve got six or seven stepping up and no doubt a few of those will be playing senior footy.” Hoppers Crossing will play the division 1 match of the round against Altona in the Western Region Football League’s opening day on Saturday. Still fresh in the minds of both sets of players will be last season’s preliminary final epic, which the Warriors won by three points. Irrespective of the opposition, Kretiuk said the opening round is always one to savour. “It’s a big game no matter who you play,” he said. Hoppers Crossing fans will get their first look at new recruit Brenton Payne. Payne, a Western Jets graduate, has since been on St Kilda’s rookie list and played for Southport in the NEAFL competition. The 22-year-old is seen as the missing piece to a fully functioning Warriors forward line. “One area we were pretty light on was firepower in our forward line,” Kretiuk said. “He’ll add a fair bit to us because we relied too much on [Jackson] Viola and a few guys who play forward.” In other division 1 opening round fixtures, St Albans will travel to Point Cook, Sunshine has a tough away date with Spotswood, Albion will hit the road to face Werribee Districts and six-time defending premiers Deer Park will unfurl the flag against Caroline Springs. 46 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 3, 2019

Reborn Hawks ready to soar The outlook for Glen Orden entering a new Western Region Football League division 3 season is vastly different to 12 months ago. Last year, the Hawks returned from a season in the wilderness, aiming simply to get back on to the field and set the platform for what they hope will be a stable future. The Hawks not only fielded two sides last season – quite a feat considering they had to pull the plug on the 2017 season due to a lack of numbers – but were also competitive, avoiding the wooden spoon with three wins in the seniors and claiming six wins in the reserves. For Hawks coach Phil Crea and the club, it’s a springboard for ambition. “Having 12 months under our belt, we’ll be a lot better for it,” Crea said. “It’s a positive vibe at the moment. “It’s going to be an exciting year for the club, but we know there’s a lot of hard work ahead of us.” The Hawks expect to see vast improvement from a number of players on their list from last season, some of whom had returned after time out from the game and others who are young and will naturally progress. As well, a strong recruiting campaign has added some midfield depth. “Last year we probably only had five midfielders,” Crea said. “This year we’ve got a good 10 or 11 and we’ll definitely be rotating them.” Some of Glen Orden’s key pick-ups include rover Aaron Law (from Werribee Districts), Nick Conte (Wyndham Suns), Lachlan Furniss and Daniel Rosenzweig (Hoppers Crossing) and Corey Mackey (Albanvale). Two players to watch for are Ethan Gibson, who played mainly in the reserves last year but is ready to step up, and ruckman Henoch Kebede, who was raw but flashed his potential. Glen Orden unearthed a new leader in Ash Peters last season. He has been elevated to playing assistant coach. “He came across last year and played about 11 games,” Crea said. “Ash is very football knowledgeable and a great bloke to go with it and gets on well with the players.” Lance Jenkinson

Werribee City takes a point from testing encounter After a rampaging six straight wins to start the season, Werribee City could have been excused for feeling a little deflated after a 0-0 draw with North Geelong Warriors. That was not the case for the Bees, who returned home from their NPL 2 west outing at Elcho Park on Saturday content with the point gained from one of the most exciting yet intimidating away venues in the competition. Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini was impressed. “It’s probably one of the toughest away venues to play,” he said. “They get massive support there – they’re all singing and chanting throughout the whole game, which is great for the spectacle. “I went over and congratulated the supporters after the game and said to keep it going.” Werribee City’s first dropped points of the season did not hurt too much in the standings. The Bees are still riding high on top of the ladder – three points clear of second-placed St Albans Saints. But Sabbadini was disappointed to see the winning streak end after his side came so close to finding a winner. “We had three gilt-edged chances in the second half,” he said.

“Their keeper got a fingertip to a couple of them and one of their defenders blocked one of the shots. “We had some really good chances, but mind you, they had one really good one as well [saved by Bees goalkeeper Christian Rossi].” Werribee City made a slight alteration to its line-up, strengthening the midfield. The Bees’ mentality was still to be aggressive and chase three points. “We changed our shape a bit, but we didn’t go out to defend,” Sabbadini said. “We tried to take the game up to them.” The key to Werribee City’s clean sheet was Julyan Collett, who was impenetrable in the back third. “He was the best man on the ground, for sure,” Sabbadini said. “He was our centre-half and nothing got past him.” Shaun Hodor, in his first start for Werribee City, formed a solid partnership with Collett. In central midfield, Brad Murray was the heartbeat of the Bees, guiding the side in an attacking sense and getting stuck in defensively. Takanori Nishimoto and Tyler James were other Bees who refused to yield.

North Geelong put a lot of work into nullifying Jake Butler, the Bees’ Kiwi international – and it worked for a large part of the game. “Every time Jake got the ball, they were right on to him,” Sabbadini said. “He’s an international, so he knows how to deal with that sort of stuff. “We made few tweaks in the second half and he came into his own more.” Werribee City will feature under the Friday night lights away to Moreland Zebras this week. Bees striker Alec Goodwin will have a fitness test late in the week to determine if he can take his place in the starting line-up. Import makes the game By Lance Jenkinson A seismic 78-point turnaround in the positive has seen spirits soar at the Werribee Devils in the Big V basketball women’s state championship. After losing by 39 points to Keilor Thunder last week, the Devils served up a dose of their own medicine with a 39-point win this week, crushing a young and inexperienced Bulleen Boomers 94-55 at Eagle Stadium on Sunday. Devils coach Reece Potter said his side took full advantage of an opposition team finding its feet. “A little bit less experience in the opposition this week,” he said. “Bulleen might end up struggling a bit this year. “From our point of view, a really good result, we took care of business. “We were able to rotate through in the end and play some younger players and give them some experience.” New import Alisia Jenkins made a world of difference for Werribee. The power forward/centre was a dominant force, scoring 29 points to go with 16 rebounds. Not bad for a player who arrived on Wednesday and had to quickly get up to speed with a new system. “She got in Wednesday, practised Wednesday night and Thursday night,” Potter said. “She’s fitted in well with the group already and around the club. “She’s a rebounding machine, gets after the ball as good as I’ve seen anyone. “She’s a really solid all-round player.” The player to benefit most from the addition of Jenkins was Sarah Elsworthy, who had 20 points, five rebounds, three assists and five steals. Elsworthy could revert back to being a traditional point guard, facilitating the ball while also finding her own shot with considerably less pressure. “That loosened Sarah up to be able to create a bit more for herself,” Potter said. “Sarah did a good job of creating for others. “She played a true point guard role.” Werribee is set to get even stronger ahead of a date with three-peat champions Sunbury Jets away on Sunday. The Devils second import, Alexyz Vaioletama, arrives this week. The only concern for Werribee is a nagging foot injury to Jessica Slade, which limited her to just three minutes of court time against Bulleen. Potter insists that Slade was just managed and will take to the court for the clash with the Jets.

In men’s state championship, Werribee Devils had a daunting time of it against the two leading teams on a double header weekend. The Devils went down to McKinnon Cougars 111-92 away on Saturday night, then succumbed 129-110 to Hawthorn Magic at home on Sunday.

After conceding 110-plus in each of the first three games, the Devils have their headaches on the defensive end. Werribee will be hoping for a remedy on another double header weekend, where they visit Blackburn Vikings on Saturday night and host Corio Bay Stingrays on Sunday.

Inconsistency trips up Jets Western Jets have displayed their best and their worst in a wildly contrasting opening two rounds in the NAB League football. First-year Jets coach Ryan O’Keefe could not have been prouder of his players after the fight they showed to come back from 19 points down at three-quarter time to beat the Northern Knights in the season opener. That hunger disappeared on Sunday as they succumbed to Eastern Ranges by 63 points in a lifeless showing at Trevor Barker Beach Oval. O’Keefe could tell from early on that his side was not up for the contest as it was the week before. The Jets trailed by a massive 49 points before Zen Christofi finally got their first goal. “We just didn’t turn up to play – it’s as simple as that,” O’Keefe said. “Eastern came out and played a much better brand of footy. It came down to effort really.” O’Keefe played 286 games at the highest level with the Sydney Swans and represented Victoria in state of origin and Australia in international rules. One of his trademarks was consistency from week to week – and that’s something he is trying to drill into his players. “You’ve got to be able to be consistent because as soon as you drop your effort levels, no matter who you’re playing against, you’re going to get found out,” he said. Western Jets will come face to face with arch-rivals Calder Cannons at Rams Arena on Saturday. O’Keefe downplayed any suggestion the Jets may have a little extra fight because they are coming up against their main foe. “After what we dished up this week, hopefully the players want to improve and get better regardless of who we’re playing this week,” he said. There is one player who has been a mark of consistency for the Western Jets in the opening two weeks and across pre-season. Joshua Kellett, a potential Western Bulldogs father-son, has been outstanding across half-back. Darcy Cassar found some form in defence, while Christofi and Kyle Borg were dangerous in attack.
