Sex offences, thefts and drug crimes in Wyndham have increased, but several other major offences have declined, according to data from Victoria Police. Figures from the state’s Crime Statistics Agency, released last week, show overall crime in Wyndham rose slightly between December, 2017, and December last year, from 14,236 offences to 14,485. According to the agency, there were four homicides and related offences recorded by Wyndham police in that time (compared to two in 2017), 360 sexual offences (328 previously), 5195 thefts (4632 previously) and 406 weapons and explosives offences (395 previously). Wyndham police also recorded 650 drug use and possession crimes (compared to 528 in the year to December, 2017), 93 drug dealing and trafficking offences (74 previously) and 58 drug cultivating or manufacturing crimes (52 previously). Wyndham local area commander Chris Allen said more drug offences were being detected in Wyndham “due to the targeted operations we run and some of the good work by our local officers”. Acting Inspector Allen said the 25.7 per cent increase in drug dealing and trafficking offences demonstrated that the Altona North Divisional Response Unit (which covers Wyndham) had “also been working hard to curb serious crime and the harm drugs cause in the community”. “While we recognise that those who use drugs have a health problem, we also know that drugs are a big contributor to crime and we are committed to holding those people who are pedalling drugs in our community to account,” he said. Also in Wyndham’s crime statistics, assaults fell from 1307 offences to 1213, arson from 96 to 67 offences, property damage from 1138 to 1014 offences, burglaries and break-and-enters from 1467 offences to 1134 and deceptions from 1193 offences to 993. “We are pleased to see decreases in non-family violence related assaults in the community, with drops in both serious (down 24 per cent) and common assaults (down 22 per cent),” Acting Inspector Allen said. “It’s also encouraging to see there has been a significant decrease in residential burglaries – thanks to the hard work of local police we’ve seen a 22.7 per cent [drop] in the category.”

For Sanctuary Lakes teenager Sarah Peart, fashion and fundraising go hand-in-hand. The 16-year-old has been named a national finalist in this year’s Miss Teen Galaxy Australia. She is one of three Victorian girls who will take part in the national finals on the Gold Coast from April 30 to May 4. Winners at the national final will fly to the US for the international finals in August. Sarah, who is also a professional model, said that Miss Teen Galaxy was her first pageant. As part of the pageant, she is fundraising for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “I’ve done so much research on the foundation and I think it’s one of the most beautiful charities you can fundraise for,” she said. Sarah said she had been organising sausage sizzles and raffles at her school, Emmanuel College in Point Cook, to raise funds. She had also placed a Make-A-Wish donation tin at the Gift Givers Gallery in Watton Street, Werribee. Sarah said she was looking forward to combining her communication and modelling skills at the national final. Fresh food market for Point Cook By Charlene Macaulay A new fresh food market will be coming to Point Cook after getting the tick of approval. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has given the green light for an undercover stall-based fresh food market spanning more than 8000 square metres on a parcel of land on Point Cook Road that sits between Saltwater Reserve and the Point Cook RAAF base. The market, called Starr Point Market, is expected to trade seven days a week and will

sell a mix of fresh produce – including locally grown vegetables, meat and the like – and non-food items, including clothes, homewares and crafts, across 93 stalls. It will also include basement parking, eight greenhouses and water storage facilities. According to an economic impact assessment, the market is expected to achieve a $63.6 million turnover in its first year of operation. Wyndham council knocked back plans for the market last year, which proposed a market double the size. Objections were also received

from the Department of Defence and owners of the Sanctuary Lakes Shopping Centre, SOHO Point Cook and Tribeca Village Shopping Centre. In making a decision, VCAT presiding senior member Jeanette Rickards and senior member John Bennett said the revised proposal had addressed many of the objections raised about the original plans. “We consider that the advantages of allowing a market outweighs any disadvantages which may arise in allowing such a use,” the court transcript reads.

The market is the brainchild of Joe Schembri, who owns the land. Mr Schembri said he still needed final sign-off from Wyndham council, which he hopes to achieve within the next six months, before construction will begin. He expected an 18 month build. “I think it’s going to be good for the whole of Wyndham, not only Point Cook,” Mr Schembri said. “Wyndham residents will have their own food market without having to go over the West Gate Bridge.”

Al-Taqwa will host an open day at its mosque on March 30, and has encouraged all residents to attend. The visit followed a public candlelight vigil held at the Wyndham Village Centre carpark, where about 500 people congregated to pay their respects to those who lost their lives in the Christchurch attack. Meanwhile, Werribee Islamic Centre director Rifai Abdul Raheem thanked the wider community for the flood of support it has received in the wake of the massacre.

RSPCA Victoria is appealing for information after an emaciated dog was found lying in a ditch by the side of the road in Manor Lakes on March 11. A resident found the dog, wrapped in a brown blanket, across the road from a shopping centre on Ballan Road. RSPCA Victoria inspector Sarah Gilbert said the female “bull Arab-type” dog was found barely alive and swarming with fleas. The dog was taken to the U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital, where she had to be euthanised. The dog was not wearing a collar and was not microchipped. RSPCA Victoria and Wyndham council have appealed for information to assist their investigation into the case of animal cruelty. “Due to the lack of identification to assist us in our investigations, we’re urging anybody with information about this dog’s history or her background, to come forward and help us,” Inspector Gilbert said. “RSPCA Victoria relies on the local community to assist in these cases. Even the smallest detail can help us to ascertain the truth as we work toward ending animal cruelty.” It is an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act to commit an act which results in unreasonable pain or suffering to an animal. Anyone who is found guilty of such an act can face fines up to $40,297.50, or up to 12 months jail. The Wyndham community has shown strength and solidarity in the wake of this month’s terrorist attack on two Christchurch mosques which killed 50 people. Last Friday, the Victorian Maori Wardens visited Truganina’s Al-Taqwa College to visit students, participate in Friday prayers and perform the Haka in a show of unity between Wyndham’s Muslim and Maori communities. Kevin Hillier laments the slow show that is Werribeeâ€™s traffic â€œWhy donâ€™t you write something about the traffic in Werribee?â€? If I had a dollar for every person who has said that to me lately, I would be a wealthy man. We all know the traffic in the 3030 area, and those numerically close, is slow, frustrating and costly. The Werribee CBD and any road, street, lane or path that feeds into and out of it is STUFFED. That is a road maintenance engineering technical description meaning STUFFED. The construction works in Synnot and Watton streets have compounded what was already a first-gear crawl space and made any motion in a forward direction glacier-like. While it is painful for motorists, I feel for the businesses in the area and I hope they can ride out the short-term pain for the long-term gain. The future vision for the area is exciting and will undoubtedly transform an ugly duckling into something we can all be proud of. Hopefully, a thriving retail and lifestyle precinct will emerge. Weathering the development process is going to be a challenge for a long while yet. Whatever you can do now

to support the businesses in that area will make a big difference to their future. I am not sure what compensation â€“ if any â€“ they are eligible for, given this is all in the name of commercial progress from which they will ultimately benefit. Some creative thinking might be needed from the businesses in the area to adapt operating hours and offer special deals to attract consumers into the area at non-peak times. It is a real challenge, one for which I am sure the assistance of bodies such as the councilâ€™s Vibrant City Centres and Economic Growth Department would be available. A collective and co-operative alignment of ideas and strategies is the way to achieve the best outcomes in this and similar situations. The traffic situation in the CBD is certainly not the only one that is frustrating and annoying. The railway gates at Hoppers Crossing should officially be rezoned for parking. Then there is Sayers Road. The list goes on and on. That is why I donâ€™t write about the traffic â– in Werribee. â–

A 41-year-old man has been charged with murder following the discovery of a body in the backyard of a house in Eagle Way, Wyndham Vale on Sunday night. Sport venues hit by copper thefts By Alesha Capone Thieves have stolen copper cabling valued at more than $200,000 from sports facilities in Wyndham. Wyndham council mayor Mia Shaw last week said there had been 10 separate incidents of copper cables being stolen from sports venues within the municipality in recent weeks. Cr Shaw urged residents to report suspicious behaviour at sports grounds to police.

“These thefts are very concerning and results in significant work needing to be undertaken to make these facilities fully operational again,” Cr Shaw said. “It is also costing ratepayers a substantial amount of money to replace the cables and reinstall them. “This is disappointing – our sporting facilities are places where our community can come together and connect. “With copper cabling being stolen, and these facilities being rendered unusable, it’s the entire community missing out.” Cr Shaw said the thefts usually occurred late at night or early in the morning. “We have had reports of up to four people in two SUVs being seen in the immediate areas of the thefts,” she said. Anybody who witnesses suspicious activity at sports facilities should contact triple-0.

Siblings are check mates Point Cook brothers Luke and Jack Zhang are budding chess champions. The siblings, aged six and eight respectively, attend the Wyndham Chess Club, which meets in Hoppers Crossing and Werribee. The club last month held its first monthly Wyndham City Shield Junior Chess Tournament, which is open to children aged between five and 16. Luke won the under-10 division, while Jack came first in the under-8

division. Both of the boys were the youngest participating in their divisions, while Jack was the youngest at the event. Also last month, at a Wyndham and Hobsons Bay inter-school chess competition held at Seabrook Primary School, Luke placed equal second and Jack equal fifth out of 80 students. Jack and Luke said they started playing chess because their school, Alamanda College, offers a chess coaching program.

Recycling’s glass path

No green light for Point Cook

By Alesha Capone Crushed glass and recycled plastics have been included in a cement mixture used to build a Hoppers Crossing footpath – the first of its kind in the state. Wyndham council, Swinburne University, Sustainability Victoria, recycled content supplier PolyTrade and concrete contractor MetroPlant worked together on the project which incorporated the crushed remnants of 199,000 recycled glass and plastic bottles into a cement mix for the footpath’s top and base layers. The shredded recycled plastics used in the process were between four and eight millimetres in size, while the glass particles were about three to eight millimetres. Glass particles this small are usually too small to be recycled during a normal recycling process, and end up being sent to landfill or stockpiled. Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said the 200-metre section of footpath, which contains the plastic and glass particles, was laid at Geddes Crescent Reserve earlier this month. Cr Marcus said the footpath was part of a trial exploring the use of recycled plastics and glass in aggregate materials which make up concrete footpaths. A Swinburne research team would monitor the footpath in Hoppers Crossing, and conduct tests on samples collected from the path. The state government provided a Sustainability Victoria grant of $72,000 to fund the trial.

A set of Point Cook pedestrian lights installed 15 months ago have yet to be switched on – and it could be another three months before they are operational. Wyndham council forked out $250,000 to install the lights at the corner of Dunnings Road and Main Street before Christmas, 2017, to provide a safe crossing point for local school children and the general public. However, the lights are still not in use and a school crossing supervisor was deployed at the intersection towards the end of last year after land title conflicts that date back to the original development of the Point Cook Town Centre meant that power cabling and signal hardware had to be relocated. Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the current delay was due to a subcontractor going into administration, delaying a number of electrical safety checks. Mr Thorpe said the checks have since been completed, however it could take six weeks to receive the green light from Powercor, and another four weeks for VicRoads’ approval before the lights are switched on. “We have requested that both Powercor and VicRoads consider our case sooner than the prescribed period,” he said. “Wyndham City shares the frustration that the community is experiencing because of the delay …Unfortunately, the delay is beyond council’s control.”

Doing their hair share Two Wyndham girls are hair to show they care about others. Eight-year-old Myaah and 14-year-old Aleena have taken part in the World’s Greatest Shave, raising thousands of dollars for the Leukaemia Foundation in the process. Myaah, a grade 3 pupil at Cambridge Primary School in Hoppers Crossing, had her long plaits cut off in front of hundreds of pupils and teachers last Thursday. Straight afterwards, the school watched on as Myaah’s head was shaved. Her proud family, including her mother, father, aunts, uncles and grandfather, attended the event. Myaah, who has raised more than $2400 for the Leukaemia Foundation, said she decided to

participate in the World’s Greatest Shave after she saw it advertised on television. “I wanted to care about people and their lives,” Myaah said. Aleena, who lives in Truganina, said she had been growing her hair long for the past six years. She decided to cut off her hair and donate it to a Leukaemia Foundation program that makes wigs for people going through chemotherapy. Aleena said that she had raised nearly $2400 for the Leukaemia Foundation. “I was happy that I was able to do something to bring a smile in someone’s face with my passion and enthusiasm,” she said.

Police chip away at tool thefts By Charlene Macaulay Don’t be a fool, lock up your tools. That’s the message from Wyndham police after 1233 tools valued at more than $935,000 were stolen across the city in the 12 months to September 30, 2018. That’s a 26.7 per cent jump in offences from the 12 months prior (from 288 to 365 offences), according to the Crime Statistics Agency. Werribee (103 offences), Hoppers Crossing (58 offences), and Point Cook (47) were tool theft hot spots in 2018.

Wyndham Police Acting Inspector Jason Templar said offenders were targeting ute hard tops, canopies and metal tool boxes parked along residential streets or at work sites and stealing unsecured tools that could be quickly sold for cash online or at second-hand dealers. “These crimes are often opportunistic in

nature, with thieves targeting utes or trailers and stealing anything from hammers to expensive power tools,” Acting Inspector Templar said. “We know offenders often target tradespeople’s trailers and cars because they carry expensive tools and equipment and can be left unlocked for ease of access. “The cost and inconvenience for an individual when the tools vital to their trade are stolen is significant. We know these offences can have a real flow-on effect.” Acting Inspector Templar said the rise in

tool theft corresponded with an overall rise in theft from motor vehicles. He called on tradies to keep their cars locked at all times, even at work; park their cars in a garage or driveway overnight; secure trailers so they can’t be broken into or removed; alarm tool boxes; and engrave or mark tools for easy identification – the letter V followed by your Victorian licence number is recommended. According to a post on the Wyndham Eyewatch Facebook page, nearly $50 million of tools were reported stolen from vehicles across Victoria last year.

Doing laps to save lives Susan Grant was 38 years old and a single mum when she found out she had breast cancer in 2008. The Werribee resident had gone in for a check-up three months earlier when she found a lump on her breast and although she was given the all-clear at the time, she returned for more tests after she still felt discomfort. It was after a fine needle biopsy, followed by a core biopsy, that she was diagnosed. “I remember when I walked into the room, the doctor was sitting in there but so was a lady with a pink book – the breast cancer colour – and I thought, ‘oh my God’. “I went to the doctors by myself, because I thought they were going to say it was fatty tissue or something. “When you hear cancer, you think you’re going to die, but I thought ‘I’ve got a daughter, I’m 38, I want to do stuff with my life and I need to look after her’.

“Whatever the doctors said to do, I did it.” What followed was a lumpectomy, aggressive chemotherapy and radiation. “I had chemo for three months and I lost all my hair, I was sick as a dog,” she said. “I had all the side effects – I was so nauseous.” However, the treatment was successful and Ms Grant has been cancer-free ever since. This weekend, she will join her team Strive to Survive and do laps of the Victoria University Athletics Track for the annual Wyndham Relay for Life, which raises money for the Cancer Council. “I like to get involved … to donate when I can, to help when I can.” Charlene Macaulay Susan Grant has been doing Relay for Life for a number of years. connections so that once they get admitted they can get a job. Legal Aid has backed the idea … Mr Myall’s wife was very thankful that we’re doing something that she feels he would be really chuffed about.” The first successful student will commence the program in August.

After hours clinic push Hospital emergency departments are being flooded with non-critical cases after hours because patients aren’t aware that they can receive care elsewhere. In the two years to 2016, more than 250,000 patients that could have been treated by a nearby after-hours general practice or pharmacy, attended an emergency department across the western and northern suburbs, according to the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN). Babies and toddlers aged up to four years, and adults aged between 25-29, had the highest presentations. The NWMPHN said the practice costs the government four times more than if a patient had visited a GP – seeking care at an after-hours GP costing the system $93 on average, compared to a $368 emergency department presentation. The health network is calling on residents to be aware of their local after-hours medical services providers. NWMPHN chief executive Christopher Carter said unnecessary presentations at emergency departments put extra pressure on already-busy hospitals, especially in the evenings and at weekends. “For many, attendance at an ED is thought to be the only option available for medical care outside of business hours,” Adjunct Associate Professor Carter said. The western suburbs legal fraternity was left shocked last year by the sudden death of magistrate Steve Myall, but his legacy is set to be celebrated through a new graduate program. Mr Myall was well known across the western suburbs as a magistrate in Sunshine and Werribee, as well as many years as a criminal lawyer. He was 59 when he died. The Steve Myall Graduate Program, for students completing legal studies in Melbourne’s west, was launched last week. The program will offer a work opportunity at Victoria Legal Aid’s Sunshine office for nine to 12 months while students complete post-graduate studies. Legal Aid managing lawyer Tamsin Mildenhall, who was mentored by Mr Myall, said it was a way of ensuring his memory lived on. “I wanted to do something that brought attention to the kind of things that I think he believed in and was proud of,” Ms Mildenhall said. “He provided a lot of mentoring for a lot of the lawyers here (Legal Aid). “He cared a lot about the clients, took his job really seriously, was very passionate about social justice and making sure that everyone had their day in court and was heard. He was known in our fraternity as someone who was very compassionate.” Ms Mildenhall said the graduate program would be a hands-on experience for the successful students, giving them the chance to get a foot in the door of the industry and complete vital training while completing their studies. “What I want is to pick up someone from the western suburbs, who might not have the

Homeless help wins acclaim

Gabe welded to shed By Alesha Capone Gabe Tirabassi began volunteering at the Werribee Men’s Shed eight years ago, and he has not looked back since. Mr Tirabassi, of Wyndham Vale, taught welding and metal fabrication at Victoria University for about 29 years before he retired. In 2011, a former colleague contacted Mr Tirabassi to ask if he would teach welding at the Men’s Shed. “I eventually said yes and now I can’t get away from the place,” Mr Tirabassi said with a laugh.

“I just love it and the company’s fantastic … everyone gets along well.” Mr Tirabassi volunteers at the Men’s Shed three days a week. He has also established a program to teach women welding, which runs on Monday mornings. Mr Tirabassi said anyone interested in learning the craft – or even just wanting some companionship – could attend courses at the Men’s Shed, without needing prior experience. “We do a lot of community work, people bring in things to repair, and we also build things,” he said.

He said participants in the shed’s welding and wordworking classes often make artworks out of recycled materials, which are sold to raise funds for the Men’s Shed. Among Mr Tirabassi’s sculptural artworks are a metal snake, a unicorn rocking horse, plus replicas of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Eiffel Tower. A seven-year-old girl from Point Cook, who set up a foundation to help feed homeless people, has been recognised for her compassion. Andi was just six years old when she founded Food for Free. She started out making snack packs she would hand out to homeless people while accompanied by her family, including younger brother, Tex. These days, they distribute the snack packs to community groups and charities which assist the homeless. Earlier this month, Andi was presented two awards by the non-profit Pretty Foundation, which aims to teach girls they are valuable for who they are, rather than for their looks. In addition to winning the foundation’s Pretty Compassionate award, Andi received the overall Pretty Inspirational award at a ceremony that honoured nine girls aged under 18. “I felt shy and excited,” Andi said. “I would like to build a food truck … and deliver food to homeless people.” Alesha Capone

Finn slams traffic as ‘horrendous’ By Alesha Capone Western metropolitan MP Bernie Finn has described traffic on three Wyndham roads as “beyond a joke”. In Parliament last week, Mr Finn said: “Traffic on Palmers Road, Sayers Road and Point Cook Road has never been great, but it is now way beyond a joke and is getting worse every day. “Even during non-peak times traffic on these roads is often horrendous.” Mr Finn said one of his constituents had contacted him on March 19, to say her commute from Point Cook to Sunshine had taken more than 90 minutes that day. Mr Finn said “this insanity” could not be allowed to continue and asked when Wyndham residents could expect to receive “desperately needed relief from hopelessly crowded roads”. VicRoads’ acting regional director metro north west Fatima Mohamed said the organisation was “committed to improving the safety of Wyndham’s roads”. “We’re now delivering the biggest road maintenance blitz ever seen across suburban Melbourne and as part of this we’ll be filling potholes and fixing roads right across Wyndham, making the city’s road safer and more reliable,” she said. Ms Mohamed said the $1.8 billion Western Roads Upgrade would rebuild eight roads across Wyndham, including Derrimut, Leakes, Dunnings and Palmers roads. The construction of eight main road projects being delivered as part of the Western Roads Upgrade is expected to finish by 2021. The upgrade also includes a 20-year program to improve and maintain more than 260 kilometres of roads between Footscray and Werribee, from 2021 to 2041.

Pavilion problems strike hard Members of a soccer club say they are disappointed that a pavilion being built at the $3.8 million Williams Landing Sports Precinct is not going to be ready for the upcoming soccer season. The pavilion, once completed, will be shared by the Williams Landing Soccer Club and tennis, football and cricket clubs which also use the sports precinct. The soccer club’s president Craig Major and committee member Ray Pauley said that Wyndham council had told them that the pavilion would be ready by the end of last year. the sports precinct went into voluntary administration during October last year, that was revised to the start of the soccer season on April 7 this year. Mr Major and Mr Pauley said an agreement was reached between the company’s directors

and its creditors, enabling it to continue building the sports precinct. “Works are now progressing, but the season starts on April 7,” Mr Major said. “They [council] said it should be ready by the start of the season, but there is no way that is going to happen.” Wyndham council’s director of city life, Jenny McMahon, said the April completion date was set prior to the builder going into voluntary administration. She said that in February, the soccer club was notified of a revised project timeline, once construction recommenced on the site.

“We also advised the clubs that we will provide additional temporary facilities for the season, and if there were any tenants hosting events or functions requiring the use of a community space, we would assist by identifying suitable alternatives at no cost,” she said. “There are currently three temporary changerooms, two shower blocks, a large storage space and two toilet blocks on site. “Works for the Williams Landing Sports Precinct are going well, and we anticipate the building will be complete for the 2019-20 summer sports season.”

Happy to be at home Meet one of Wyndham’s newest dinky-di Aussies. Pinal Subedi was one of 480 Wyndham locals to officially become Australian citizens at a citizenship ceremony last month, hosted by Wyndham council. The 23-year-old Werribee resident moved to Australia from Nepal in 2013 when she was 17 years old, intent on studying for an accounting and finance degree. “I had my cousin here, so it was a lot easier [to come here], because I don’t have any other family in other countries,” she said. “I think my parents also loved that my cousin was here, so if I needed help, I could just ask him. “It was difficult [at first], but Australia is beautiful and everything is good here, so I slowly started to get the hang of it.” Ms Subedi has since graduated and now works for ANZ.

Dynamic duo boxing on By Alesha Capone Two teenage boxers from the Werribee-based Wyndham Police Citizens Youth Club are weighing in as champions. Marissa, 17, won the Victorian Amateur Youth 64-kilogram title, at the State Boxing Titles, earlier this month. The win means Marissa has qualified for the Victorian state selections of the National Youth Boxing Championships, to be held in Queensland in October. Fellow Wyndham PCYC member, 13-year-old Kyleisha received a “walk through” to the national selections, because none of her opponents wanted to fight her at the state titles. Kyleisha said she started boxing just over a year ago, while Marissa began boxing just under 12 months ago. Marissa said she and Kyleisha had become good friends with a third PCYC member, 18-year-old Regan, during this time. “I like the travelling and I think it [boxing] gives you a family, as the three main fighters here have become really close,” she said. Marissa said her favourite part is tournaments, although it can be tough to fit in training six days a week with her VCE studies. Kyleisha said she enjoyed the discipline of boxing and also supporting her friends at competitions. Planning starts on new hospital More details about the future community hospital to be built in Point Cook have been released. Last year the state government announced it would spend $675 million to build 10 community hospitals in major growth areas, including Point Cook. Construction of the hospitals is expected to begin in 2022 and finish in 2024. The Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority (VHHSBA) has invited expressions of interests from residents, who are interested in joining a community consultative committee, to help plan the community hospitals. The VHHSBA website lists some of the planned services to be offered at the Point Cook medical hub, including primary and referred specialist services, a day procedure centre and a range of same-day procedures. Other services planned include pathology and imaging, pharmacy services, chronic disease management, community mental health assessment, alcohol and drug support, dialysis, health and family planning and early childhood services. Community-based palliative care, chemotherapy and rehabilitation services are also on the list, plus public dental services. The expressions of interest process will close on April 23. New housing for disabled youth By Charlene Macaulay A unique partnership will give young people with disabilities the opportunity to live independently. Empowered Liveability, a disability-specific property development company, has teamed with disability service provider GenU to build a number of specialist houses across Australia, including six in Wyndham, that will allow people with high-care needs to live independently with round-the-clock care. Earlier this month, construction was complete on the first property, a four-bedroom, two-bathroom house in Tarneit, with residents expected to move in coming weeks.

Funding for community Wyndham council has given more than $462,000 in funding to several community groups, programs and events. The council announced the funding, part of its 2018-19 Community Grants Program, at a ceremony held earlier this month. Thirty community organisations have received grants from the council. Tweddle Child and Family Health Service’s Working Out Dads Wyndham program received $19,035. In addition, VICSEG received $40,000 to establish two Horn of Africa women’s health and wellbeing groups, along with two culturally-diverse playgroups, in Wyndham. The Western Community Legal Centre (also known as WEstjustice) was allocated $30,528 to develop a project to train bilingual community workers to deliver legal education sessions to newly-arrived residents. The Remember the Wild charity received $38,400 to host a Connected to Port Phillip summer festival at Point Cook Coastal Park.

Empowered Liveability co-director Nicole Doherty said the organisation was founded on the belief that people with a disability should not be forced into unsuitable living conditions, such as aged care facilities. “As most of us know, accommodation [for people with a disability] has been an issue forever and a day,” Ms Doherty said. “A lot of our clients were stuck – whether it was in hospitals, hotels, caravan parks, aged-care facilities – unsuitable places, places they don’t want to be. “I thought ‘I could do one house’ … we’ve got 25 houses in Victoria, and another 30 interstate starting.” Goro Gupta from Empowered Liveability

Mother raises road safety fears A Truganina mother has expressed concern about children being forced to walk dangerously close to, and across, a section of Sayers Road which has no footpath. Bheema Anthru said families living in the College Green estate, whose children attend Al-Taqwa College and other nearby schools, were “facing real problem regarding safety of our kids crossing the road”. She said children who walked along Sayers Road, along a 100-metre long strip of the road between the Westbourne Grammar School property and a bus stop, were being forced to walk through grass and a swale drain. She said there was also no safe spot near this stretch of Sayers Road for children to safely cross, such as a pedestrian crossing. Show us the Money Man By Alesha Capone A group of young people from across the west are monkeying around in a new television and web series. Students from the ATA Acting Studio, run by Williamstown actor Adam Turnbull, have filmed an episode of the program Money Man. The ATA studio runs classes for children in Altona Meadows, Yarraville, Hoppers Crossing, Essendon, Caroline Springs and Williamstown.

Youngsters from all the ATA classes will appear in Money Man, which is being produced by Bamyasi Media. In the show, comedian Greg Fleet plays Miles, a former children’s television entertainer turned alcoholic. He is forced to work as a children’s party clown in order to make a living, which is something of a hardship for a character who dislikes kids. Mr Turnbull said his students played party guests at the events which Miles performs at.

One of his students, Tyson, appears as the “main child” having a party in one of the episodes. Mr Turnbull himself also stars as Miles’ agent, Alan. Money Man is being filmed in the Maribyrnong municipality. It will be released as a web series and Bamyasi Media is also hoping the program will be picked up by a television channel. A Sanctuary Lakes resident has expressed disappointment after a thief stole a bicycle from her backyard earlier this month. Florita Pamintuan said her husband had given her the blue-green Merida bicycle on Valentine’s Day. She said a thief entered their Times Square backyard, near Sanctuary Lakes golf course, in the early hours of March 2 or 3 and “brazenly” took the bike. “I was pretty upset and devastated – I couldn’t believe it had been stolen,” Ms Pamintuan said. She said that she reported the stolen bike to the security team at the Sanctuary Lakes Resort. Ms Pamintuan said she was surprised by the theft, as her dogs were home at the time. “It’s sad how in this day and age you can’t even feel secure with your own belongings, even in your own backyard,” she said. “The only consolation is that it was my bike and not anything else … we were all at home and sleeping at the time it was taken.” Ms Pamintuan said she was not so much upset by the theft of the bicycle itself, but more by the loss of a gift from her husband.

A State Laboratories complex will be established at Werribee at a cost of $10 million. The Premier, Mr. Hamer, said last week that the centre would eventually incorporate all Government laboratories which are now located at various sites around Melbourne.

Work on the $6.3 million Forsyth Rd Overpass is expected to start within the next week, Transport Minister Mr Jim Kennan, announced last week. Theiss Contractors has been awarded a $1.45 million contract to complete bridgeworks and a reinforced earth walk by December.

Increased use of the Point Cook airbase had raised noise levels to an unacceptable level, angry residents claimed last week. Mr Steven Comben, a Point Cook resident for 14 years, said his family had to endure increased engine noise from flying planes using the base day and night in increasing numbers.

Lucrative opportunities could open up for Wyndhamâ€™s tourism industry if plans for an international terminal at Avalon Airport go ahead. Linfox Airports managing director David Fox said he was confident the federal and state governments would sign off on the $50 million project.

MY WYNDHAM Michelle Robinson, of Tarneit, is both a milliner and a nurse. She chats to Alesha Capone. How did you become a milliner? I’ve been going to the races since I was little, there is a photo of me aged about three months old at the races. I’ve always loved the races and as I grew up, I fell in love with the expensive hats at Myer, although I definitely couldn’t afford them! I essentially learned my sewing skills from my grandmother. One day, I went to the Kyneton races and I got a tap on the shoulder to say I should enter Fashions on the Field. I was a bit shy and reluctant, but I got up on the stage and won the millinery award. Two girls on the stage said that if I could do that without any training, I should do it professionally. And you ended up starting your own business, Hatricks by Michelle?

Anytime one of my hats achieves something, like an award, or anyone buys one, I can’t believe it. My hats have won lots of Fashion on the Fields awards. This year, I won the People’s Choice award at the Melbourne International Millinery Convention. I’m a full-time nurse and this is my part-time work, they balance each other very well. Millinery is creative and relaxing, whereas nursing is time-critical and can be stressful. What do you enjoy about millinery? So many people are afraid of wearing hats. To have them come to me and try things on that they might not usually do, is a privilege. There’s a hat that suits everyone, you have just got to keep trying on hats until you find the right one. I get a lot of joy out of seeing clients wear my hats. The thank-you messages I get from customers are really wonderful. Racewear is

really my passion, I really enjoy making hats for the Spring Carnival. You’re also a nurse? I initially wanted to be a vet, but that is very hard to get into, so I studied science and I really

enjoyed it, then transferred to nursing. I took to it like a duck to water, it was exactly what I was looking for. I also completed post-graduate studies in critical care nursing. You never know what your day is going to be like. We get to see people who are unwell and often at their worst, and hopefully get to help them in some small

way and help understand what’s going on. What do you like about Tarneit? Tarneit is a good mix of brand-new growth and established homes, it’s a nice mix of new and old.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir spices it up with Dukkah Dukkah is a bright new arrival on Vernon Street. The long dining room has been done up a treat. It’s casual and elegant, spacious and warm. There’s a lot of old, gorgeous wood in use. Bennie and I choose the easy option of getting stuck into the share platter, which sells for $48 for two people. It starts with three dips, all with clear and concise flavours – and all offering something different from most Mid-East eats emporiums. Lemon turmeric hummus with Egyptian dukkah, fel-fel (chargrilled capsicum cream cheese with sweet paprika, walnuts and chives) and beet labneh (caramelised beetroot and yoghurt with black sesame seeds) come with good toasted bread that runs out just before we’ve slurped the last of the dips. But as Bennie quips, more bread and we’d be stuffed before the mains arrive. And the share plate mains? They are splendid. Two fat, exemplary cigars of lamb kofta – dense, perfect and with just the right mild level of Mid East-style seasoning. Two skewers of chicken shish tawook with capsicum and red onion. The chook chunks look sufficiently large to promise dryness, but such is emphatically not the case. In other words, superb. Our meaty skewers were accompanied by very nice quinoa tabouli and rice pilaf in exactly the right proportions.

Bennie reckons $48 is a bit steep, with the sort of deal he gets at his beloved Footscray Best Kebab House colouring his views profoundly. I beg, very much, to differ. Dukkah is a quite different sort of place and the quality – especially of the meats – is above that of the majority of kebab shops. And the combined regular cost of our dishes from the menu would be $54. No such quibbling is possible with the Dukkah desserts – and we try both. Om ali – puff pastry pudding with coconut, cinnamon milk, hazelnut and sultanas served in a tagine – is the Egyptian version of bread-and-butter. It’s wonderful, rich, quite heavy. This beauty – which could easily serve two – clocks in at a very cheap $12. Kunafa (layers of shredded angel hair pastry, mango and cream topped with pistachio dust and rose petals) is lighter, a good deal more playful – and just as tasty. It, too, is priced keenly at $11. JT: My signature dish would be a prosciutto-wrapped chicken breast stuffed with sundried tomatoes, chargrilled capsicums and feta cheese. I serve it with a creamy cauliflower puree, glazed broccolini and baby carrots, brussels sprout leaves and a strained sauce from the chicken juices. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? JT: During my A-League career, my diet was very strict to ensure my weight and skinfolds would stay at the required level. However, on my birthday, I’d always celebrate with a wild combination of chicken nuggets, pizza and lasagna. I’d have it with a mango and strawberry Boost juice and finish the meal with homemade pancakes, ice-cream, berries and maple syrup. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? JT: I love the Netflix series, Chefs Table. It takes you behind the scenes of some of the restaurants from the World’s Top 50 Restaurants list. It’s incredibly inspiring and the cinematography is phenomenal. FB: What is your favourite food? It was kind of a luxury item and only appeared on special occasions. So having never been big on soft drinks or alcohol, juice naturally became my go-to when wanting something a little crazier then my standard glass of water. Recently my hubby, Kevin, bought me the cutest little wooden cheese board as a present – but then promptly claimed it as his own, regularly creating his own cheese boards for his lunch. House work becomes fun with a smartphone mindset Smartphones and apps have a big influence on the property market in Australia, reports Melissa Heagney, senior journalist with Domain. We can search for our dream home with the swipe of a finger or see how a new piece of furniture would look in our homes through augmented reality and furniture stores such as Ikea. And our real estate obsession has spread, with some of the most popular smartphone games allowing players to renovate or decorate rooms, homes, mansions or even gardens. App games such as Matchington Mansion (which is rated in the top 55 free games in the Apple App store), Homescapes, Home Street: Dream House Sim, Design Home and Home Design Makeover are growing in popularity. About 67 per cent of Australians play video games, and 65 per cent of those play games on their mobiles, according to a 2018 Bond University study. Home decorating gamers are not only connecting to the virtual world by playing games, they’re also building communities and connecting on social platforms such as Facebook and YouTube to share tips and designs. While games you can play on your smartphone may be relatively new, the idea behind them isn’t, according to Eduardo Velloso, a lecturer at the school of computing and information systems at the University of Melbourne. “These types of games have existed for a long time – from the time of The Sims,” Dr Velloso said. “When The Sims came out you could have characters and build

homes, but there was no way of showing that to anyone.” Dr Velloso said part of the appeal of home decoration games on apps was the ability to share your ideas, designs and, ultimately, your personality though your virtual decorations. With technology advancing apace,

Dr Velloso said the future of world or home-building games would see the physical environment of homes being more widely used as part of the gaming experience. “There’s a new trend of incorporating gaming into your physical environment through augmented reality – so you can use

a virtual reality headset and see something coming out of your wall or your couch,” he said. He said such gaming technology also lent itself to virtual decorating – projecting home owners’ designs on to walls without the need for new wallpaper, paint or printed images.

SPORT Second half fade-out troubles Devils Werribee Devils coach Reece Potter is struggling to comprehend what happened to his team after half-time in its 87-48 loss to Keilor Thunder in the Big V basketball women’s state championship at Eagle Stadium on Sunday. The Devils trailed by 10 at the mid-point of the game, but they were competitive in the first half and the signs pointed to a good battle in the second half. What happened after half-time caught Potter by surprise. “The first half we were in the game and competitive and then we came out in the third quarter and were very ordinary,” he said. “It was very one-sided and I can’t put my finger on why we were very flat. “It was a two-and-a-half minute period before I had to call a timeout and then it was another two-and-a-half minutes before I had to have another timeout … I don’t think in all the time I’ve been coaching that I’ve had to call two timeouts in the first five minutes of the third quarter.” Once the score started to blow out, Potter

turned to his bench. The Devils decided to give minutes to younger players and the experience gained was about the only positive to come out of a bleak second half. “If we played our starting five until the end of the game, we might’ve been able to peg it back a little bit,” Potter said. “It wasn’t worth the risk of injury in a pretty physical game against a tough Keilor team once the result was gone.” With new imports on their way, Potter is hopeful this is the one and only time Werribee is subjected to a blow-out loss of this magnitude. Alisia Jenkins is scheduled to arrive this week, while Alexyz Vaioletama is at least two weeks away as she is still involved in overseas competition. Warriors fall in final By Lance Jenkinson The pain of grand final defeat will eventually subside once Point Cook reviews the entirety of its Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 season. The emotion stemming from the Warriors’ nine-wicket loss to Sunshine in the season decider at Dempster Park is raw. But the day will come when they can be proud of what they have achieved this summer. Warriors player-coach Aaron Whear was understandably disappointed not to get his hands on the flag, but he can put it into perspective when he reflects on how far the side has come. “When I took on the coaching job a couple of years ago, the club had been struggling for a couple of years,” Whear said. “On paper, it’s the most successful season the club has had from a turf cricket perspective to make a grand final in that calibre of competition. “All in all, you look at our win-loss ratio, it’s been an extremely successful year. 60 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 27, 2019

“We just couldn’t get over the last hurdle against a very good calibre of opposition.” Whear can see the ultimate glory on the horizon for Point Cook and is urging the Warriors to present a united front in the bid to go one step better next season. “It was our first VTCA first XI grand final,” Whear said. “It’s a massive learning experience for the club. I hope the great majority of the side can stick together and we can have another crack at it next year.” Point Cook will reflect on one bad day of cricket as its undoing in the four-day grand final. The Warriors wilted under pressure with the bat on day one, bowled out for a dismal 81. It was always going to be a tough ask to come back after such a tiny first-innings total. Sunshine, led by man of the match Asela Aluthge’s 117, posted 216 for a lead of 135 runs. While they were on the ropes, the Warriors refused to accept a knockout blow. They became just the second side all summer to reach triple figures against the star-studded Sunshine bowling attack, posting 166.

Harpreet Singh was the cornerstone to the innings with 61, while captain Brett Talbot (38) and Owen Doolan (25) made runs in the tail. It gave the Warriors a 31-run lead – not enough to cause a worry for Sunshine. The Crows passed the target one down in just 4.5 overs, with their captain, Troy Stone, leading the way with 29 not out. “We didn’t roll over by any means,” Whear said. “I’m very proud of the way they fought it out.” If Point Cook’s first-innings failure did not consign them to defeat, a soggy ground on day three did. The Warriors lost 38 overs in the match, which forced them to play a little more recklessly in the second innings. “We needed to make enough runs to set a target and also have enough overs to bowl them out,” Whear said. “Once all those overs got taken out of the game, that made the task extremely difficult. “Full credit to Sunshine – they were a fantastic side all year and they clearly outplayed us in the game.”

in The doghouse ■ The start of the AFL season reminds me of how much my world and that of many others revolves around footy at all levels – AFL, VFL, suburban and juniors (men’s and women’s). It is also such a barometer for the mood of people in workplaces. There certainly is no other sport that generates the kind of passion and dedication in our environment like footy. The English, Europeans and South Americans have it with their football. It is like an additive to the air you breathe. You know on Sunday night if a workmate is going to be in a good mood based on the results from the weekend games. Bragging rights, tipping competitions and ridiculous bets all come to the fore and we love it. ■ More than those things though, footy is about people and it was great last Saturday night to be among the red, white and blue brigade to start another hope-filled season. The faces are the same, as are the expectations. The Bulldogs past players and officials group has never been in better shape and catching up with former players, trainers, statisticians and staff is a treat. The great Barry Round was in town from the Gold Coast and looking good after a heart operation that was supposed to be a 4 hour valve replacement but turned into a 10 hour saving-his-life procedure. A philosophical and always generous Barry offered his services to young Bulldog rookie Laitham Vandermeer, who told the room he was working on building up his body size. Not sure the Bulldogs dietician would see it Roundy’s way. ■ Stephen Wallis talked about himself? Never. One of the most unassuming champions of the red, white and blue, the 261 game veteran was happy to talk about his sons – Mitch (AFL) and Josh (VFL). He recently sold the family car businesses and runs a couple of farms and fishes a lot. He has certainly had an amazing business life, starting out as a junior accountant with Werribee Mazda in its old Cherry Street showrooms. ■ Lots of celebrations are taking place with victorious cricket teams across the west. Yarraville Club Cricket Club Third XI and its All Abilities teams have tasted premiership success while Hoppers Crossing fourths lost to Plenty Valley and Werribee thirds missed out to Preston. Reds get tasty revenge for cup defeat Hoppers Crossing’s insurance policy came through in Saturday’s season opening 3-0 win over Hume United in Football Victoria state league 2 at Grange Reserve. After taking a one-goal lead, the Reds were being put under the pump by the Hume players, who made a number of dangerous ventures into the box. Standing in the way of Hume at the back of the net was Reds goalkeeper Kieron Sharratt. Reds coach Shaun Barbara said the stopper kept them in the game. “They had a couple of key chances to bring it back and potentially take the lead, but he was instrumental in keeping us in pole position,” Barbara said. “That probably broke their spirits – when he pulled off a couple of nice saves. “For them it was almost like, what else can they do?” It was an important win for Hoppers Crossing. Demoted from state league 1 last season,

the Reds wanted to make their mark on a new league from the get-go. There was also a bit of payback on the cards after the Reds went down to Hume United in the FFA Cup recently. While disappointed not to see his team’s cup run continue, Barbara’s priority was round one. He’d kept a few cards close to his chest. “We kept a couple of aces up our sleeve in the cup game,” Barbara said. “We didn’t show our full hand, but we also had a couple of guys that weren’t ready to be playing a full game through various things, whether it be illness or injury. “We want to win every game possible and that’s our mentality and what we strive to do. “Absolutely it was disappointing to lose the cup game and it left a little bit of a bitter taste in our mouths. “But we knew on any given day we can beat anybody.” Familiar names Jason Hayne and Steven Smart got on the scoresheet for Hoppers

Crossing on Saturday, while new recruit Levis Dusenge scored on debut. Dusenge impressed in the friendly matches and carried over his form in a substitute appearance. “He’s a great young kid and he’s been a lively addition to the team,” Barbara said. “It was good to see him on debut come on and put one away.” Martin Strasser, roaming on the front line, and captain Brian Chesson, the commander at the back, were also influential for the Reds. Hoppers Crossing will take to the road to play Moreland United at Moomba Park Reserve this Saturday with confidence stemming from the first-up win. Star’s A-League promise By Lance Jenkinson Panagiotis Kone is eager to rip into his new career challenge with Western United. Kone was the first signature secured by the A-League expansion team and was immediately tagged with marquee status because of his elite talent. A star attacking midfielder with 28 caps for Greece and deep playing experience in big soccer leagues across Europe, Kone has experienced just about all that he can at the top level. While playing for massive clubs such as AEK Athens, Brescia, Bologna and Udinese was the peak of his career, the opportunity that presents at Western United is unique by comparison. Kone will be the star player in a team that will start from scratch in the A-League next season. The 31-year-old has the opportunity to set the tone for the franchise from day one and he is keen to get down to business. “We can write our history because our club is new and I think that is very exciting for me,” Kone told Star Weekly. “It’s a little bit of a challenge, to create a new team with new

players … I’m very excited to be part of this project.” Kone will be put under the microscope like no other player at Western United. The marquee player is expected to deliver on the field and off it. He is ready for whatever is thrown his way. “I don’t feel pressure – I feel honoured that Western United chose me to be part of the team,” Kone said. “I will do my best to make all the things that we are dreaming about come true. “I know my quality as a person and as a player. I will work hard to help my teammates and the team to be successful.” Kone has signed a two-year deal with Western United. In town recently for a first look, Kone was even more excited about his move and to be able to call Melbourne home. He likes how multicultural Melbourne is and can see himself fitting in with the big Greek community. “Melbourne is a very nice city,” Kone said. “A big part of the city is the Greek community. I’m very pleased to see them and I know what they did for this city. It will feel like my home here.”

Kone plans to lace up the boots on day one of the team’s pre-season. The former Olympiacos and Lens youth player wants to point the way for his teammates from early on. “When the pre-season begins, I will be here,” he said. “I will work hard to be ready and I think the results will come. “I think we will do a very good job and I’m hoping all the fans will come to the stadium to support us.” Having watched the A-League on television, Kone reckons the style of play will be different to the Italian Serie A, where he spent the bulk of his senior career. He will need to adapt to what he sees as a more physical league than he has experienced before. “It’s less tactical than Italy, but physically it’s very strong,” Kone said. “It will be a tough competition and I will enjoy it.” Western United unveiled a trio of talented youngsters as new signings last week. Striker Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, midfielder Sebastian Pasquali and defender Dylan Pierias have committed for United’s inaugural A-League season.

Werribee was overtaken in the second half of a 54-point loss to Footscray in a VFL practice match at Whitten Oval on Saturday. The Mark Williams-coached Werribee came out after half-time holding a three-point lead, but the Bulldogs dominated the final two quarters, kicking 12 goals to three to run out big winners. A positive sign for Werribee was the performance of onballer Michael Barlow, who was named the side’s best. Bior Malual and Nick Coughlan kicked two goals apiece for Werribee, which will play its final practice match on Saturday afternoon against Box Hill Hawks at Avalon Airport Oval.

Werribee City’s supremacy in the National Premier League 2 west continued with a 4-0 thrashing of Springvale White Eagles at Galvin Park on Saturday. The Bees went to the break ahead 1-0 after Lisandro Paz struck in the 18th minute. Paz doubled the Bees lead in the 60th minute, with Alec Goodwin and Liam Brian completing the rout.
