Nightmare on CBD streets By Alesha Capone Wyndham council will conduct a review of traffic and transport issues in Werribee’s CBD before developing an action plan to address “nightmare” congestion. A report into the review and an action plan is expected to go to the council by September. Mayor Mia Shaw put forward a motion at last week’s council meeting calling for the review. It was passed unanimously. Cr Shaw said traffic congestion was “the No.1 issue facing our community”.

“This review will look at areas of concern and highlight roles and responsibilities with a view to developing an action plan with short, medium and long-term solutions required to improve traffic flow,” she said. She said the review would also highlight traffic issues the council could advocate on. Cr Shaw said traffic congestion in Werribee was “a nightmare during peak times”; that increasing numbers of trucks were using Synnot Street; and that there were not enough carparks at Werribee train station or elsewhere in the city centre.

She said that as more high-rise residential and commercial developments began in Werribee, action was needed. “In my view, it would be irresponsible of us to continue down a path of encouraging increased activity without addressing the obvious traffic congestion and transport issues we are currently experiencing,” Cr Shaw said. “I’m also concerned about increased traffic flow to other areas of the city, such as Duncans Road, with residents struggling to safely exit and access their properties … not to mention the intersections of Duncans Road

and Edgars Road, and Wattle Avenue, Tower Road and the Princes Highway requiring urgent attention. “Access to the Riverside industrial precinct also needs to be looked at – it’s ridiculous that access to this area is via the city centre and residential roads that abut schools.” Several other councillors spoke in support of Cr Shaw’s motion. Cr Peter Maynard said it would be important to consider other forms of transport, such as walking and cycling, when developing the action plan.

West real estate holds steady By Alesha Capone Wyndham’s property market is “not all doom and gloom” according to local real estate agents. Property information group CoreLogic last week released a report into house values across the nation, which showed that properties in Melbourne had experienced a 9.1 per cent price drop (to a median value of $629,457) between February this year and February last year. The CoreLogic data showed properties in Melbourne’s west had experienced an annual

drop of 5.7 per cent, to a median value of $549,075. The data did not break down the information into individual municipalities. However, YPA Werribee director Bassam Tofaili said the real estate market in Melbourne, including Wyndham, was “adjusting” after the recent boom.

Mr Tofaili said the market usually rose and fell within a fairly regular cycle. He said the past two Melbourne real estate booms were in 2011-12 and 2005. He said some Wyndham houses were selling fairly quickly, but others were remaining on the market for five to seven weeks. “I wouldn’t say it’s doom and gloom, but it’s not an easy market, that’s for sure,” he said. He said vendors needed to be realistic about their price. “Sellers need to look at the last three months’ of sales, not the past 12 months,” he said.

Hockingstuart Werribee senior sales consultant Samantha McCarthy said while there were plenty of media reports about house prices dropping about 10 per cent, this did not seem to be occurring in Wyndham. “The outer western market place hasn’t seen a huge shift in prices, we haven’t seen it drop as drastically as the media and some organisations have been reporting,” Ms McCarthy said. “Some properties might not achieve the same price they would have 12 to 18 months ago, but that is to be expected, because the market couldn’t have sustained that kind of growth.”

A trio of talented students from a Hoppers Crossing school have recorded a song at Mushroom studios. Grange P-12 College students Jemma, Doris and Samuel – along with their friend, Jae, who attends another school – were selected to record their song after participating in a school holiday program run by the Department of Education and Training. Doris, Jemma, Jae and Samuel formed a music group called DJJS, with the girls as singers and the boys as rappers.

Police have dropped their investigation into a school principal caught on video appearing to drag a pupil along the ground. Manor Lakes P-12 College principal Steve Warner was stood down last month pending a police investigation after the footage became public. A Victoria Police spokesperson last week said: “No criminal offence has been found and there will be no further police action”. An independent investigation is still being conducted on behalf of the Department of Education and Training. More than 14,800 people have signed an online petition calling for Mr Warner to be reinstated as Manor Lakes P-12 College’s principal since the January 31 incident. The petition states Mr Warner “has been an amazing influence on the school and its students”. “The worst outcome of this situation would be for the school to lose him as the principal and leader,” the petition states. “His work has only just started to take effect and there is only good things that could come from him continuing.”

Council takes a stand on plastics Briefs

By Alesha Capone Wyndham council will ban most single-use plastics at events and facilities it manages. The council unanimously voted in the new ADvERTiSiNg policy last week, after Cr Heather Marcus raised the idea in August last year. As a result, items such as plastic bags, straws, containers and plates â€“ along with balloons â€“ will be mostly banned at events co-ordinated by the council, or any building that is occupied and managed by the council.

But stallholders (traders engaged to operate at council events) will still be able to offer bottled water and disposable coffee cups. The council will also make plastic straws available at its venues, for people with a disability who need to use bendable straws to drink. Sporting clubs, leaseholders and community-run events will not be included in the ban. While the new policy is being introduced, the council will implement a transition period of six months for its events and facilities.

Pupils at a Hoppers Crossing school have been learning all about first aid. Professional trainers from St John Ambulance conducted a first aid incursion for students in prep to grade 2 at Woodville Primary School, earlier this month. The incursion aimed to teach the youngsters about simple but important aspects of first aid, such as calling for help in an emergency and recognising emergency situations. In April, grades 3 and 4 at the school will also take part in a St John Ambulance first aid incursion. This year, the St John Ambulance First Aid in Schools Program will deliver free first aid training to 200,000 Victorian primary school students. Community rallies around family By Alesha Capone Community spirit has come to the fore to help a Point Cook family whose rental home was badly damaged by a fire last week. No one was home when a blaze began at a house in Arbour Avenue, in the Alamanda estate, on the afternoon of March 4. After the blaze, the house was deemed too dangerous for the family who lived there – a couple and their two children, aged eight and five – to retrieve anything. While a friend has provided the family (who did not have contents insurance) with a place to stay, many other people have also stepped up to help out.

Two Alamanda estate residents, Adrian Chng and Gagan Jhingran, have set up an online GoFundMe account in the hopes of raising funds for the family. They are asking for community members to

make a donation – no matter how small – to help out the family. In an extraordinary demonstration of community spirit, after the account was established last week, hundreds of people had donated more than $12,300 within a 24-hour period. By Monday (March 11), this had risen to more than $18,500. Mr Chng and Mr Jhingran said they would donate all of the funds directly to the family. Mr Chng said he met the family after the fire at their rental home, while Mr Jhingran is a neighbour. Mr Chng described the public’s response to the GoFundMe account as “fantastic”.

“It’s been really heartening to see how the community came together,” he said. Mr Chng said several local organisations and businesses – including The Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club, Grill’d Point Cook and a Point Cook community centre – had also planned fundraising initiatives to help the family. On Friday, Point Cook Soccer Club “rattled tins” for the family during an FFA game. Cross Culture Church Point Cook also donated more than $760 to the cause, and members of the church have invited the family to attend meals at their homes. A big splash of fun An event involving “Australia’s largest fully inflatable obstacle course” is coming to Werribee later this month. ObstaSplash is an inflatable “theme park” featuring a mixture of wet and dry inflatable challenges spread across five kilometres of flat grassland. Participants can slip, slide and bounce their way around the different inflatable obstacles, which include the ObstaScream, ObstaFun-House, ObstaMaze, ObstaDance, ObstaBalance, ObstaPillow, ObstaTunnel, ObstaClimb, ObstaAir, ObstaBounce and the ObstaBlue-Balls. The course is open to people aged eight years and above. Once on the course, attendees have a minimum of two hours to do as many laps as

they like or to revisit their favourite obstacles. Children aged between eight and 12 years must complete the course with a registered adult (with a maximum of three children per adult). The Wyndham Police Citizens Youth Club is giving young people a chance to learn life skills. The Werribee-based club is also known as PCYC. The west has recorded the highest unemployment rate in the Melbourne metropolitan region, according to a report from the Brotherhood of St Laurence. The report, using data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, shows that Melbourne’s west which includes Werribee, Altona, Sunshine, St Albans, Footscray and Melton, recorded an unemployment rate of 14.8 per cent in January this year (compared to 18.7 per cent in January last year).

This added up to 3417 unemployed people aged between 15 and 24 in the west, not including those who were involved in full-time study. Melbourne’s northwest placed second on the list, with a 13.3 per cent unemployment rate (1799 young people). In comparison, the overall Victorian youth unemployment rate was 11.4 per cent. In a statement last week to coincide with the report’s release, the Brotherhood of St Laurence said that the Australian youth unemployment rate was “stagnating at the levels seen in the

don’t want to complain but why is it that when I do, I feel guilty and I am not the one in the wrong? In this day and age – where every service provider follows up with an email survey of your customer experience – we are expected to dish out stars and ratings like a chair-spinning judge on a reality show. When it is good, it is easy, but when it is bad, it is like being interrogated by the FBI (I do watch too many US cop shows, don’t I?) My comments about a recent service call to my house, which was less than satisfactory, turned into a more complicated questionnaire than the one to become a field agent for the FBI. Tell us why you only gave two stars? How likely are you to recommend us to your friends? What could we do to improve our service next time? Next time? Not likely! Does complaining actually make a difference or is it just venting so we feel better? The answer is probably somewhere in the middle. I wasn’t surprised to see a restaurant we visited recently in the country had gone out of business. Based

on our experience, where six dishes were all sub-standard or not what was ordered or advertised, their demise was by their own hand. When we complained (and we did it nicely) the poor waitress listened and reported back. We paid and the same poor waitress was dispatched to our car to offer us compensation to be used next time. Next time? Not likely or possible as it turned out. Some people believe, and I shared this view until recently, that the best form of complaining is never going back and telling your friends, and now that those friends include your online Facebook friends, it does make a major impact. I think the social media complaint rarely fits the crime. Make your point in person. Ruining someone’s business and reputation via keyboard is pretty cowardly, as is sending the waitress out to be the peacemaker. Story told through dance Hoppers Crossing dance teacher Nayana Panchal and her students will perform at a community learning centre next week. Mrs Panchal runs the Shivarpanam Academy, where she teaches traditional Indian dance styles including Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, folk dances and Bollywood dancing, along with Kalaripayattu, a martial art form. She teaches students ranging in age from five to 45 years old. “I tell my students that they may not become a professional artist, but dancing is very helpful in other ways – for your energy, confidence levels and discipline,” she said. Mrs Panchal, who migrated to Australia in 2016, studied at the Darpana Academy of

Performing Arts in India under Dr Mallika Sarabhai, a famous Indian classical dancer, choreographer and instructor. In 2017, Mrs Panchal starred in a video that was shown as part of an exhibition called Dancing Place, at the Wyndham Cultural Centre. At her upcoming performance, which will be staged at the Point Cook Community Learning Centre, a narrator will explain the meaning and stories of the Indian dances being performed by Mrs Panchal and her students. The event, to be held on Saturday, March 23 between 4-6pm, is supported by Wyndham council.

Energy bid gets the nod By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has approved plans for an energy recovery plant in Laverton North that will generate enough electricity to power 16,000 to 20,000 houses a day. Recovered Energy Australia submitted the proposal to build a “recovered energy generation facility” at 28 Alex Fraser Drive. A report, considered by the council last week, said the plant would perform three main functions – receiving waste from councils based in metropolitan Melbourne, materials processing by a gasification process and goods reclamation.

The facility would convert up to 200,000 tonnes of general household domestic waste a year into about 10 megawatts of baseload renewable energy to be fed back into the grid. The council report stated waste would be transported to the site in standard waste collection trucks and that the plant would process about 600 tonnes of waste daily. The facility would operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and have a maximum of 10 staff on-site at any one time. A carpark with 60 spaces would be located on-site. When Star Weekly reported on the proposal last year, Recovered Energy Australia director Ian Guss said the plant would be worth “in the order of around $100 million”.

The facility, once constructed, would have a maximum height of 35 metres and a floor area of 11,500 square metres. The council report stated that before the plant could be built, a separate works approval was required from the state Environment Protection Authority (EPA). “The EPA have advised council that the applicant is currently compiling detailed information for submission of a works approval application,” the report stated. The report stated that the facility would be “appropriately sited in the core of the Laverton North Industrial Area and a significant distance from residential land and more sensitive uses”.

Labor’s jobs promise for Centrelink The federal opposition has announced it will provide funding for 40 new full-time jobs at Centrelink in Werribee, if it wins the upcoming Australian election. Although no date has been announced for the federal election, it must be held by May 18. Lalor MP Joanne Ryan and the opposition’s human services spokesperson, Ed Husic, made the jobs announcement last week. Ms Ryan said that if Labor wins the election, it would fund the 40 new jobs at Centrelink’s Werribee office. She said that last year, she and her staff assisted more than 7000 residents with issues related to services provided by the federal government. “A significant proportion of this work involved assisting with Centrelink matters, we heard horror story after horror story of people who were forced to wait months for their aged pension to be processed or who were forced to wait on hold for hours for their phone call to be answered,” Ms Ryan said. She said that many of these issues were caused after the government cut and outsourced more than 2700 staff from Centrelink and the Department of Human Services. Ms Ryan said that adding new staff to the Centrelink office in Werribee would help reduce waiting times for both Centrelink and Medicare clients, with both services based in the one building. She said there were more than 2000 young people in Lalor who received the Youth Allowance from Centrelink; nearly 13,000 age pensioners and nearly 5000 disability support pension recipients. A big weekend for footy fans Pacific Werribee will host a Big Footy weekend this Saturday and Sunday to launch its partnerships with Werribee Football Club and the Western Region Football League. On Saturday, visitors to the shopping centre will be able to sign up as members of the Werribee Football Club and participating WRFL clubs. There will be hand-ball sessions with Werribee players and opportunities to test kicking skills on the Big Footy Weekend’s virtual Kick Off machine. Residents will be able to take up to 15 household items – including microwaves, televisions, computers, kettles, fax machines, furniture, bikes, barbecues and bulky cardboard – and drop them off to be recycled. Wyndham’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus said: “While the environmental benefits of this event are plain to see, the best part in my opinion is

that any items that aren’t recycled are donated to great organisations like West Welcome Wagon and the local Men’s Shed,” Cr Marcus said. Items that will not be accepted on the day include crockery, clothing, green waste, white good, wheels, tyres, mattresses, asbestos, construction waste, chemicals, biological waste, sharps, broken monitors, fluorescent tubes and smoke detectors. The Pop Up Drive-Thru Recycling Day is free for Wyndham residents, a driver’s licence or rates notice is required for identification. A logistics company has been fined $100,000 after a worker was injured at its Laverton North factory. Hellmann Worldwide Logistics Pty Ltd was convicted and fined at Sunshine Magistrates Court last month, after pleading guilty to a single charge of failure to provide a safe system of work by not having a traffic management system in place. The court heard that on August 2, 2016, the worker, who was wearing a high visibility vest, walked behind a reversing electric forklift which was being operated by a colleague. The worker was struck by the forklift and pushed to the ground and ended up under the piece of machinery. The worker sustained a fractured leg. Both of the workers were employees of a labour hire company. A WorkSafe investigation revealed there was no traffic management system in place at the time of the incident, and no physical barriers or other means of separating mobile machinery from workers walking on the factory floor. On top of a $100,000 fine, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics was also ordered to pay WorkSafe’s costs of $6555. A statement issued by WorkSafe last week said that after the forklift accident, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics had installed pedestrian walkways, defined by fixed barriers, at the factory. MY WYNDHAM Wyndham Vale’s Cassandra and Joseph Beckitt run a family business, Dynamic Performers Australia, which is based in Werribee. Mrs Beckitt is a dancer, singer and vocal teacher, while Mr Beckitt is a pianist and piano teacher. They speak with Alesha Capone. How did you meet? Mr Beckitt: We are both from Tasmania, and studied at The University of Tasmania Conservatorium of Music. We met there. We decided to move to Melbourne so I could do my Masters at Melbourne University. Mrs Beckitt: We’ve been here 22 years now, and we have four sons, they are all musicians and singers. What do you like about Wyndham? Mrs Beckitt: When we first came to Melbourne, we moved out here a bit out of necessity, we couldn’t find somewhere affordable closer to the city. We like the small-town aspects and we like the fact you can go to the city to see a show, be there and be parked in 35 minutes.

Mr Beckitt: We’re in our fifth year. Mrs Beckitt: We run Dynamic Performers with my sister Carolyn, a choreographer and a singing teacher, and her husband Michael, who has done a lot of theatre as well. I think other groups are more selective or run auditions, we’re quite inclusive, we try to include everyone. We class ourselves as a learning institution. We are predominantly music theatre-based, but we do other types of music too. For the past two years, we’ve put on shows at the Wyndham Cultural Centre. We run two choirs, an adult one and a youth one. The choirs perform throughout the year, including at our trivia night and carolling

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir is in for the thrill of the grill 8Street is a new indoor arcade of Asian eateries – it’s right under the big ferris wheel. So new is it, we’re here on opening day for the lot of them. Or, rather, it’s opening day for all the businesses, but we’re here for just one – the purveyor of Philippines eats known as GJ’s Grill. We’ve tried – once – the original GJ’s in Franklin Street, near Vic Market, with OK if not memorable results. Very long-time readers will know we have a certain, um, ambivalence about Filipino food. But we’re definitely up for trying the new GJ’s because we’re in the expert hands of CTS pal Jacqui, hubby Wes and their kids. They’re big GJ’s fans, and besides, it’s been way too long since we’ve enjoyed a catch-up. And we’re heartened by the knowledge the menu is all about grilled/roast meats and nothing at all about the braises and so on that often fill bain maries in Filipino eateries. The routine is regulation food court – pay at the counter and wait for your number – and the food is served in cardboard containers. I’m a bit nonplussed that the photos for this story make the food look unlovely and parsimonious. It’s neither – we eat well and affordably. Bennie has the beef talapa with garlic rice ($14.50). Jacqui has warned us the meat will be well done in the Pinoy style. She’s right, but it’s still good eating.

GJ’s Grill Address: 8Street food court, Docklands. With the same garlic rice comes my lechon – crispy skin pork. It’s excellent – and sinfully rich and fatty; quite like classic Chinese roast pork, but without the seasonings. Both our meals are lifted in the zing department by serves of atchara – a liquidish pickle concoction made from grated unripe papaya. We’re powerful hungry, so also get a couple of the classic pork skewers. These are awesome and much more generous than we’ve had in the past, so the $5 each price tag is no problem. The meat is tender, succulent, perfect. It’s too rich for me, but my dining companions also share a serve of another classic – sisig ($19). This is an offalish jumble that is a bit like the topping of an HSP – without the chips! It’s tricky to gauge how GJ’s and its neighbouring 8Street establishments will go at Docklands. But if you’re there anyway, GJ’s is worth checking out for something a little different.

Late last year, we were involved in the Garage Sale Trail and also donated $1 from every pink tea chest sold going to the McGrath Foundation, raising $1,800. FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? TVW: Well, put it this way … I think my swimming skills far outweigh my cooking skills. I can do a few different pasta dishes, you know … I’m not bad at carbonara. I do a good tuna pasta. And I make a not bad chicken soup. So I think they’re all passable. I really need to have recipes. I’m not very creative. My husband’s fantastic in the kitchen. He loves it. He can look at what we’ve got in the fridge and go “Oh, we’ve got this, this and this, so we’ll make up this.” FB: What’s your favourite kind of food? TVW: Look, I’d have to say Italian. That’s because I spent a lot of time over in Italy when I was younger, doing marathon swims. I got to experience the most amazing Italian food in Florence and Sicily and Rome. The pizzas and the pasta and the gelati are just absolutely second to none. I think it must be the quality of the ingredients they use. FB: Do you like a drink? TVW: I love a drink. I love a Moscato. I love a sweet wine. That’s sort of my ‘relax’ drink when summer’s nice and we’re sitting outside. Yeah, it’s good to have just a nice glass of wine. I love my coffees as well. Helps kick-start my morning. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? TVW: Neil Armstrong and (fellow astronaut) Gene Cernan, Julia Roberts, Roger Federer and Leonardo Da Vinci. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? TVW: I do, actually. We’ve actually got chickens. I often have to check how fresh the eggs are. There’s a secret to that, even if you buy eggs from the supermarket. Put your egg in a bowl of water. If it sinks, then it’s fresh. But if it floats, then basically it’s past its use-by date. What happens is, the shell’s very porous and, over time, air enters into it, making it lighter.

CHIPPING AWAY Recently on the Food Bytes podcast, we discussed the merits of lasagne versus spaghetti Bolognese (or spag bol, as we Aussies like to call it). Days later, our eagle-eyed producer spotted Spag Bol flavoured chips in the chip aisle of his local supermarket. It prompted a heated discussion on ‘trendy’ chip flavours. Do we really want balsamic and red onion flavoured chips? Or macaroni cheese? Or – heaven forbid – a snag and sauce flavoured chip? (and yes, they do exist!) Suggestions for new chip flavours came thick and fast on the Food Bytes Facebook page … Bart would like to see Marathon Dim Sim flavoured chips with Fountain soy sauce. Susie suggested a bacon or carbonara flavoured chip. My favourite idea, though, belongs to Craig, who’d like to see this as a chip variety: corned beef or silverside with mustard sauce. Admittedly, I’m a bit of a chip purist, but that I could probably handle! Which is more than I can say for our keen taste tester Kevin, who’s verdict on the Spag Bol chips was a big thumbs down. Home owners have been warned to tread with caution when considering whether to lock in their home loan rates after several out-of-cycle rate rises from major and junior banks. Rising mortgage prices come at the same time as experts are starting to suggest the Reserve Bank could move in the opposite direction and cut rates, which could prompt banks to change course and follow suit. In January, NAB increased rates on its owner-occupier principal-and-interest loans by 12 basis points, and also hiked by 16 basis points its owner-occupier interest-only loans, investor principal-and-interest loans and investor interest-only loans. The bank last September announced it would hold its rates steady as long as possible, pledging to restore trust with existing customers, in the wake of hikes ranging from 14 to 16 basis points by rivals Westpac, Commonwealth Bank and ANZ. The move by the major lender follows a string of hikes from second-tier lenders in recent weeks, as the banks face higher funding costs. Some 13 junior lenders have lifted rates on some products by up to 20 basis points since December, including Macquarie Bank, ME Bank and Bank Australia, analysis by comparison platform finder.com.au found. “With the RBA cash rate stagnant and the costs of international borrowing increasing, many banks will increase their lending rates,” Finder insights manager Graham Cooke said. But in a competitive market, other lenders may “seize the opportunity” to get an edge over their rivals and reduce rates, he said. Citi Bank and IMB Bank have

The Cats had planned to use their regular bowler-at-the-death Odette Lopez, but amid all the tension of a close game and strategies being rolled, they realised too late Lopez had been used for her maximum allowable overs. So the Cats turned to Lopez’s new ball partner, Madalyn Smith, to bowl the pressure-packed final over of the match. After bowling a wide with her first ball, Smith hit back to take the match-winning wicket off the third-last ball of the over, sending the Cats into the grand final. Point Cook through to decider as junior Warrior shines

Not only did Point Cook win its way through to the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 grand final, it may have solved a lingering problem during its five-wicket victory over Sunshine Heights at Saltwater Reserve on Sunday. The bold decision to promote home-grown youngster Darcy Harmer, 17, produced the goods in terms of the Warriors’ problem with the No.3 batting position. Harmer played a crucial role in the Warriors run chase. He provided 36 runs and featured in a match-winning 68-run second-wicket stand with star opener Harpreet Singh, who top-scored with an entertaining 55. After his semi-final showing, Harmer is expected to stay at No.3 for the four-day grand final with Sunshine that starts this weekend. Warriors player-coach Aaron Whear said Harmer’s success was pleasing as he was a junior product of the club.

“He started at the club in under-11s and worked his way through, so to see him get 36 in a semi against a quality attack is fantastic,” Whear said. Set 142 for victory, Point Cook wasted no time eating up the runs, reaching the target in just 41.1 overs – almost half the overs it took for Sunshine Heights to make its 141. Singh was the key. He lit up the game with six fours and a six to consign the Heights to defeat. “Sunny Singh is a very good player,” Whear said. “He scored 50-odd in quick time, which sort of took pressure off the rest of the bats.” It was really a perfect semi -inal performance from Point Cook. The Warriors bowlers were spot on, particularly the spin duo of Whear (3-38) and Gurbaksh Khaira (4-47). They were supported well by enthusiastic Warriors fielders.

“It was a terrific, all-round performance,” Whear said. “We bowled well, we caught well and we batted particularly well.” It will be a history-making day when Point Cook features in its first VTCA first XI grand final. “We’ll need to bring our best game going forward, but we’re excited,” Whear said. In division 2, Werribee Centrals were caught in a spin by Glenroy and eliminated at the semi-final stage. Glenroy’s veteran spinner, Steve Goodwin was unstoppable, taking 8-44 as Centrals were all out for 114. Goodwin has taken an incredible 55 wickets at 6.9 this season. Werribee Masters star Lauren Smart featured in a Vic Metro versus Vic Country women’s masters exhibition game at Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The game was a curtain raiser to a doubleheader of AFLW games. The game brought together the best-of-the-best Victorian over-35 players to promote masters football. Werribee Masters are putting the call out for new players as the 2019 season fast approaches. Tigers coach Kerry Saunders will hold a clinic at Wyndham Vale Reserve this Saturday from 10am-noon for new players – both men and women – over the age of 35 who want to give masters football a go.

Tigers ‘filthy’ on final By Lance Jenkinson Werribee captain Tim O’Brien has taken aim at Wyndham council after his side was bundled out of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west group finals on Sunday. The Tigers were forced to host a “home” semi-final on enemy territory at Melton after they were kicked off Chirnside Park in the middle of March to make way for pre-season football games. Instead of playing at their Watton Street ground, where they were undefeated all summer, the Tigers had to move their game to MacPherson Park, historically one of the toughest away grounds in the competition. It did not end well for Werribee – it was beaten for the first time since the middle of November in a five-wicket loss to Melton. O’Brien was seething that his side was unable to host a final it had earned the right to after finishing the season in second place on the ladder. “Our council doesn’t think cricket is important enough as football in the cricket season and we’ve had to wear that,” O’Brien said. 48 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 13, 2019

“The cricket club is absolutely filthy on it and we’re hoping that it will never happen again because it’s cost us big time this year. “When your own council is not even backing cricket when we’ve done some research where cricket is going to be the biggest game in the shire of Wyndham with the population that’s growing – they’ve got to take a good hard look at themselves.” Werribee’s cricketers made way for big-drawing AFLW and JLT Series games. Crowds came to see North Melbourne and Adelaide in the AFLW and North Melbourne and St Kilda in the AFL pre-season. Instead of re-configuring the ground for cricket after the AFL’s big guns had left, Wyndham council granted the Werribee Football Club use of the ground for practice matches and early VFL games. It was the decision not to revert the ground back to cricket that ticked O’Brien off. “We went to the council and said there is only going to be six hours of football played at this ground, so we want to get the ground back for finals next week,” he said. “They knocked it on the head because they’d already promised [football] practice games.”

O’Brien believes the premiership window is open for Werribee in sub-district cricket. He is urging Wyndham council to back the Tigers’ dream of a flag next summer. “We think we’ve got a side that can win a premiership,” O’Brien said. “Hopefully, the council can support us and get the ground ready to go for cricket, too.” Werribee did not handle the conditions well at Melton at the weekend. The Tigers were bowled out for 103 in 38 overs. Matthew Harmer was the Tigers’ lone shining light with a run-a-ball 35 in the lower order. “We didn’t get enough runs on the board in pretty difficult conditions,” O’Brien said. Melton passed the target in the 58th over. Brad Apps (3-29) and Jonathan Burton (2-36) toiled hard with the ball for Werribee, but the total was too small to defend. A back injury to strike bowler James Freeman at training on Thursday night hampered the Tigers. The final nail in the coffin for the Werribee season came when top side Caulfield suffered an upset loss that eliminated the Tigers from the finals.

Werribee Football Club continues to tap into the talent at NAB League club Murray Bushrangers. Hudson Garoni and Tom Boyd are the latest in a long line of Bushrangers graduates to call Avalon Airport Oval home. Garoni is a highly touted key forward, having represented Vic Country, been part of the elite AFL Academy squad and earning team of the year honours. He kicked 38 goals in 15 games for the Bushies last year, including a haul of eight against Sandringham Dragons. Boyd had a big 2018 as a utility, featuring in all Bushrangers games, as well as three for GWS Giants in the NEAFL.

Almost a year ago, I accused the MX-5 of “going soft” when I wrote: “The latest (iteration) to appear is the MX-5 RF, a sleek fastback with a smooth line joining the roof to the rear of the car – a far cry from the pared-back proportions of the original MX-5.” Maybe someone back at Mazda HQ was listening, because the latest version of the best-selling roadster has been given a makeover to hark back to those early days of new-found driving excitement – without reproducing its privations. The latest Mazda MX-5 has been imbued with more power, torque and technology in all its three variants, from the entry-level Roadster through the mid-range RF to the top-dog RF GT. The 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre four-cylinder units have boosts, to 97 kW and 152 Nm and 135 kW and 205 Nm respectively. The 2.0 has its redline lifted to 7500rpm. The driver is pampered with telescopic steering wheel movement to find the most suitable driving position; safety is boosted with a rear camera and new standard safety technologies across all models. Prices have taken a nudge north, with the RF GT 2.0 manual (the test vehicle) putting on $1070 to get to $45,960, plus on road costs.

Styling

With the metal roof up or down, the Mazda MX-5 RF (for retractable fastback) GT is true to the tradition of the Triumph, Austin-Healey, MG and Lotus of old. With the roof up, the appealing fastback styling comes into its own with a beautiful smooth line joining the roof to the rear end. The RF GT has its own 17-inch bright finish wheels.
