Zoo lobbies for funds By Charlene Macaulay Werribee Open Range Zoo is mounting a concerted campaign to get the state funding it needs for a mammoth $87 million expansion that aims to more than double visitor numbers. Zoo director Glen Holland said while the zoo was chasing a number of options – including philanthropic donations – to bankroll the expansion, “the development will overall still be reliant on state funding”. The state government has allocated $1 million for zoo expansion planning and design works to date. “We believe this is an enormously beneficial project for the region and are discussing a level of support from the state government that reflects this,” Mr Holland said.

“Our ongoing discussions with the state government have highlighted the enormous benefits the expansion will bring to the region, and we have expressed our determination to see this project through. “The redevelopment plans are still subject to change and depend on a number of factors, including the amount of funding secured. With a project this significant, staged implementation and strong feasibility studies along the way are critical.” As reported by Star Weekly, the proposed expansion will feature a mammoth 20-hectare elephant sanctuary that will house the elephants currently living at Melbourne Zoo. It will also include an expanded Rhino Retreat to allow breeding on-site; expanding the existing meerkat enclosure to become one of the world’s biggest; enlarging the lion habitats to fit two prides; a high-wire gondola to connect trails on both sides of the river and give visitors unique views of the zoo grounds; and a range of other immersive experiences aimed at boosting visitation to 1.5 million people per year. The zoo’s visitor numbers have doubled in the past five years to 600,000 visitors each financial year. Of that, 21 per cent of visitors are Wyndham residents, more than 50 per cent are from Victoria, 6 per cent are interstate and 2 per cent are international. The proposed expansion is expected to be rolled out in several stages up until 2024.

If executed in its entirety, the redevelopment will deliver an increased economic return of more than $161 million and result in 200 direct and indirect jobs, according to a recent study commissioned by Zoos Victoria. A spokesperson for Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the local member “receives regular updates
and is in close consultation with Zoos Victoria regarding their plans for development of the Werribee Open Range Zoo”. “Tim and the Andrews Labor government are supportive of the work of Zoos Victoria and their animal conservation initiatives … the proposed expansion promises significant
benefits not only in animal welfare, but also to this local community providing more employment opportunities and economic benefit for Werribee.” The spokesperson would not confirm if the government planned to fund some, or all, of the zoo’s redevelopment.

Death fear over intersection By Alesha Capone Calls for traffic lights or a roundabout to be installed at the “dangerous” Point Cook and Sneydes Road intersection are rising, amid fears of a serious collision at the site. Cr Kim McAliney said the council had been lobbying hard for the Point Cook intersection – which comes under VicRoads jurisdiction – to be upgraded. “Someone is going to be killed there if nothing is done, there is no doubt about it,” she said. “I call it Russian roulette – it really is. You take your own life in your hands driving
through there and for children crossing the road, too.” The council has included a request for the intersection to be upgraded in its submission on the state government’s 2019-20 budget. Point Cook Action Group president Bob Fairclough said the group had been lobbying for traffic lights to be installed at the intersection for a number of years. Wyndham police Inspector Adrian Healy said that in the past five years, there had been five collisions reported within a kilometre of the intersection, three involving injuries. “We have heard it can be difficult to turn

The Werribee Bowls Club has joined forces with the Werribee Hospital Foundation to host a barefoot bowls and barbecue fundraiser next month, with all proceeds going towards new equipment for the special care nursery at Werribee Mercy Hospital. Werribee Hospital Foundation community engagement and fundraising manager Lisa Field said it was hoped the event would raise enough money to purchase a Neopuff infant resuscitator. About 700 babies are cared for in the special care nursery each year. Ms Field said 3867 babies were delivered at Werribee Mercy in 2018, with even more expected this year – meaning an increased demand for special care nursery services. “The special care nursery is just one area of maternity services … we are getting ready to fundraise for more children’s services, because about 16 per cent of the patients going through the hospital are children, and 25 per cent of emergency department presentations are children,” she said. “We’ve got a high youth population in the community … the hospital needs to keep pace with the needs of the community.” Ms Field said the foundation hoped to eventually purchase four Neopuff resuscitators for the unit through a series of fundraisers. Each resuscitator costs about $1800. The barefoot bowls and barbecue fundraiser will be held on Friday, March 22, from 6-10pm at the Werribee Bowls Club at Chirnside Park, Watton Street, Werribee, and will include social bowls, a barbecue, salads and raffle. Wyndham residents said they avoided turning right at the intersection, which they described as the “worst intersection ever”, “a fatality waiting to happen” and “the most dangerous one I have ever encountered”. Julie Ann wrote: “I go through this intersection ever Friday and many times there are near misses or an accident”. VicRoads manager of movement and safety, metro north-west, Jason Stakic, said the organisation was “working closely with Wyndham City Council on a number of potential road safety improvements for the Point Cook Road corridor”.
Council seals recycling deal Wyndham residents are being urged to continue separating recyclables from their household waste after the council forged a deal with Visy Recycling. The council has cut ties with SKM Services after the Environment Protection Authority served the company with notices to stop accepting recyclable waste at its Laverton North and Coolaroo plants earlier this month. More than 1000 tonnes of recyclable paper, plastic and cardboard was sent to landfill by 32 of the state’s councils – including Wyndham – in the past week. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said because SKM could not fulfil its contractual obligations to collect recyclables, the council was in a position to enter into a new arrangement with Visy. “Wyndham has been successful in negotiating an outcome that is in the best interests of our community and the environment,” Cr Shaw said. “However, it is important to note that there is limited opportunity for all other affected councils to achieve the same outcome simply due to the capacity of the two recycling facilities currently accepting materials. “It is … really important for residents to continue recycling by separating their recyclable materials into the blue recycling bin.” Cr Shaw said the SKM situation highlighted the need for urgent state government investment in new recycling facilities.

Big truck trouble in Little River Briefs

ADVERTISING Truck traffic has been a concern for years, but some residents say the problem seems to have worsened since preparation work for the youth justice centre in Cherry Creek – which is located about 1.5 kilometres north-east of Little River Road where it joins the Princes Freeway – began last month. Several residents said they had been forced off the road or involved in “near misses� with

trucks straddling two lanes, as the local roads were too narrow for the wide vehicles. Some residents said trucks were being parked on nature-strips, damaging pipes or waking them up at night. Resident Emma Sutcliffe said: “As the mum of two young drivers, a local resident and someone who turns out in a hurry for CFA duties, I’m extremely concerned by the frequency and speed of these trucks on our sub-standard and often single-lane roads.� Long-time community advocate Les Sanderson said: “The current wave of trucks don’t appear to adhere to speed limits,
especially the 30-kilometre area in River Street or the 60 kilometres across Grants Bridge.� Wyndham economy, innovation and liveability director Peter McKinnon said the council had been “working closely with Little River residents, City of Geelong, Victoria Police and VicRoads to identify ways in which we can divert trucks away from Little River�. He said council officers had conducted an analysis of traffic movements through Little River to determine commonly used truck routes, collected photographic evidence of illegal truck driving and asked traffic police to increase their presence in the area.
A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokesperson said the department was “committed to reducing the impacts of traffic on the local community as much as possible� while the youth justice centre was being built. “The project’s managing contractor has Certificate opportunity instructed its drivers to use routes that are the least disruptive for residents, including avoiding residential areas where possible,� she said. To help manage and reduce traffic, speed restriction signs will soon be installed on Little River Road.

Eyes down for serious fun The numbers are coming up for a bingo night that was struggling. Werribee Rotary Club, which took over the management of Monday bingo nights at the Italian Sports Club in October, is giving 100 per cent of the money raised to other charitable organisations in the community. Brian Ahmed, from Werribee Rotary, said the bingo sessions had not been making money and were in danger of closing down. He said the club met with bingo co-ordinator Michael Nazzari, caller Ian Rawlings and a number of players to find out what could be done to return the game to its former glory. “We were told, ‘No machines, funds raised to go to local charities and the occasional gifts [to players] to say thank you for their support’,� he said. Since then, the nights have grown in popularity and now turn a profit, allowing
Werribee Rotary to donate $1000 apiece recently to the Salvation Army, Beyond Blue and Uniting Care. Mr Ahmed said it was a great way for locals to have a bit of a punt while helping the community. “It’s not a money-making exercise – we do it all for the community,� he said. Nursing the family spirit By Charlene Macaulay When Werribee South’s Margaret Vawser signed up for nurses’ college in Hamilton, little did she know she would be forging both a career and lifelong friendships. Mrs Vawser, who grew up in Portland, trained for three years at Glenelg Base Hospital, earning 39 shillings a fortnight. As an on-site lodger, she quickly formed strong friendships with the other nurses-in-training.

“Because we all lived together, we all counselled each other,” she said. “You could come off an evening ward and we’d all sympathise with each other and talk it through. “We were more or less kept together and the girls that you worked with, they became like sisters, like family.” After graduating in 1960, Mrs Vawser worked at Portland Hospital, then moved to North Queensland after marrying her husband, Peter. The family moved to Hoppers Crossing in the 1970s when Peter got a work transfer. Mrs Vawser became charge nurse of the Werribee day hospital, a rehabilitation unit based at the Masonic Hall. Following a fundraiser, a 30-bed nursing home and a purpose-built day hospital was built, and it was there Mrs Vawser worked until the site was decommissioned. Werribee Mercy Hospital opened and she retired. Throughout her career, Mrs Vawser would regularly catch-up with the other nurses in

Wyndham paramedics have shaved almost a minute off average emergency call-out response times in the past year. New Ambulance Victoria figures show Wyndham’s paramedics are, on average, getting to the scenes of code 1 call-outs within 10.32 minutes from receipt of triple-0 calls – down from a response time of 11.21 minutes in the second quarter of the 2018-19 financial year. In the three months to December 31, 2018, Wyndham paramedics attended 2103 code 1 incidents, which include patients that require urgent paramedic and hospital care. The majority (88.3 per cent) of code 1 call-outs were responded to within 15 minutes, in line with the Ambulance Victoria target of 85 per cent of code 1 call-outs being responded to within that time. Paramedics responded to 1504 code 2 call-outs in the same period, with an average response time of 21.03 minutes. Code 2 incidents include acute but not time-critical call-outs. Ambulance Victoria chief executive Tony Walker said ongoing reforms throughout the organisation and investment in ambulance services – including the deployment of 450 new paramedics in the past three years – had helped improve performance. “The simple fact that we have more paramedics on the ground is a significant contributor,” he said.

tand by for the stampede to Avalon Airport this weekend for the biennial International Air Show. Yes, the highway will be a nightmare from Friday through to Sunday and all hotels and motels will be booked out – and hopefully so will our restaurants and pubs. Avalon Airport chief executive Justin Giddings said 201,000 people attended the last event and this year might be even bigger. The air show does bring some challenges as Justin explained: “It is getting more difficult as the airport gets busy, but I believe the air show will be here (Avalon) for a long time to come. “It is the perfect location for an air show – 45 minutes from the Melbourne CBD and just 20 minutes from Wyndham and Geelong. It is an event that puts us on the map right around the world.” The key for us in Wyndham is to leverage exposure, awareness and, ultimately, an economic boost every two years. So what if the traffic is heavy for a few days? It’s not
like we are not accustomed to sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic. For Point Cook residents, that is a way of life. People are going to the air show to see planes, so attempts to sell our region in that space would need to be memorable. With temperatures forecast to be in the 30s, what about Wyndham or Werribee water bottles? It seems a waste (no pun intended) to have so many people virtually in our backyard and not let them know about our gems. I will bet Geelong will be doing it.

he passing of Eric Johnston is the end of an era. The former World War II Changi prisoner was 100 when he died. What a man he was. I vividly remember his visit to the Werribee Football Club Anzac Day President’s Lunch several years ago. The memories he shared were as raw and emotive as anything I have heard. Eric was, and is, one of the true heroes of our country. His passing deserves our acknowledgment and his sacrifice our deepest respect and thanks. R.I.P. ■

Wyndham council has been recognised for a project which has resulted in 7000 solar panels being installed across 35 municipal buildings and community centres. The project received an award from the Institute of Public Administration Australia last week. Wyndham’s environment and water portfolio holder, Cr Heather Marcus, said the council’s solar project would save 52,900 tonnes of greenhouse gas during the next 20 years.
Police charge youth
A 17-year-old Wyndham Vale youth has been charged following a series of robberies across Melbourne’s east and west. The youth allegedly carried out the robberies between February 10 and 19, at various locations including two Truganina service stations. Police last week charged the teenager with armed robbery, robbery, theft of motor vehicle, handling stolen goods, theft, committing an indictable offence while on bail and traffic offences.

Prison terms for taxi robberies By Alesha Capone Two men who pleaded guilty to a series of armed robberies on taxi drivers have been sentenced to jail. Ilyas Ahmed and Aqil Macaw, who were both aged 19 when they threatened and robbed taxi drivers in Maidstone and Sunshine West in June, 2017, were found guilty in separate hearings last year. They appeared before the County Court earlier this month for separate sentencing hearings. The court heard that during the first robbery,
Ahmed threatened a taxi driver with an axe. Later, Macaw threatened another driver with a “long knife” and Ahmed placed a pair of scissors against the driver’s neck. They stole the driver’s wallet containing $500 and his mobile phone. During a robbery in Hoppers Crossing, involving Ahmed and two other unnamed offenders, Ahmed struck the taxi driver in the chest with an axe before stealing his mobile phone and $300. Afterwards, Ahmed and one of the co-offenders forced the driver to open the boot
of his taxi and get inside. The court heard that Macaw had also robbed taxi drivers in Yarraville and Travancore and had attempted to rob a female taxi driver in Sunshine. Both men were using methamphetamines on a daily basis at the time of the robberies. Ahmed was sentenced to six months jail for the Hoppers Crossing armed robbery and received two three-year community correction orders (CCOs), to be served concurrently, for two other armed robberies. The CCOs will begin once Ahmed is released from jail. He has
served 602 days in pre-sentence detention. Judge Julie Condon said that Ahmed’s offending “occurred during a period of significant personal crisis” and he had since shown “genuine remorse”. Macaw was sentenced to a total of five years and three months prison for various charges of attempted armed robbery and armed robbery. He must serve at least three years before being eligible for parole. Judge Condon said Macaw had found his experience of an adult jail “immensely harsh and difficult” while on remand.
Big things are happening at Victoria University’s Polytechnic’s campus in Hoppers Lane. Some buildings at the 54-hectare site, which previously served as a trade training centre for civil construction, were shut down in 2012. But last year, Victoria University dedicated $2 million to make the site – known as the Werribee East campus – operational again. The campus has re-launched as the Werribee Technology and Education Precinct. Campus manager Paul Sadler, who is also the Polytechnic’s senior manager of manufacturing, technology and trades, said more than 120 students now attend the campus daily. Council in Canberra rail push By Charlene Macaulay Construction of four new Wyndham Regional Rail Link (RRL) stations and a metropolitan rail link from Wyndham Vale to Werribee were among the top items on Wyndham council’s wish list during a trip to Canberra last week. Wyndham council chief executive Kelly Grigsby and councillor Henry Barlow went to the nation’s capital to call for more federal investment in rail and infrastructure ahead of the federal election as part of the National
Growth Areas Alliance-led Catch Up with the Outer Suburbs campaign. The pair met up with the Federal Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge, and Labor’s Anthony Albanese. Ms Grigsby said apart from the new RRL stations and metropolitan rail link between Wyndham Vale and Werribee, she and Cr Barlow advocated for: • Fast-tracking of an Environmental Impact Assessment for the Outer Metropolitan Ring Road;
• Ongoing funding for four-year-old kindergarten; • Funding towards the new Sunshine and Geelong rail connection via Wyndham; • Increased capacity on the Werribee line, improving peak services and capacity; • $11 million to complete the modernisation and upgrade of the pipeline for the Werribee Irrigation District; • More commuter parking at Wyndham train stations; and • New and expanded bus services.
Wyndham council is one of 21 councils across Australia to be part of the National Growth Areas Alliance, which lobbies both the state and federal governments for increased funding for roads, transport, local jobs and community facilities in fast-growing outer suburbs. The trip follows the release of Wyndham council’s 2019-20 state budget wish list, in which it called for new schools, train stations and the removal of the Hoppers Crossing level crossing.
Mega homewares sale A gigantic homewares sale will take over a 27,000 square metre warehouse in Truganina. The three-day event is expected to feature up to 1000 different products across 20 brands including cushions, furniture, glassware, barware, kitchenware, lighting, napery, storage, artificial flowers and wall art. Everything for sale will be priced between 40 and 80 per cent off retail prices. Hussh, a Melbourne-based website which sends subscribers notifications about warehouse sales, has invited members of the public to attend the sale. Hussh founder and sales director Alicia Monasso said the event was “really Australia’s biggest ever homewares sale”. Danny Klaymi is the operations manager of Albi, a business supplying stock, and is helping set up the Truganina warehouse event. He said planning for the massive sale began months ago and unpacking and pricing the stock would take days.
“Twenty-seven thousand square metres is quite huge,” he said. He said customers were often amazed when they saw the size of the warehouse. “The first reaction is, ‘look how big it is’,” he said. East Werribee precinct stalls By Charlene Macaulay The future of the East Werribee Employment Precinct remains under a cloud more than three years after the announcement of a preferred bidder for the site. A spokesperson for Werribee MP Tim Pallas said that the state government was “continuing to undertake an assessment of this project before making any decisions about whether it will proceed”. The government would not reveal why it is taking so long for a decision to be made on the
plans for the precinct or when a decision could be expected. In 2015, the state government identified the Australian Education City (AEC) consortium as the preferred bidders for East Werribee, which is the largest undeveloped parcel of publicly-owned surplus government land in metropolitan Melbourne. The consortium has since been negotiating exclusively with the government. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, AEC has promised to deliver a $30 billion education, research and “employment city” that will include top
universities from China and the UK, the largest science park in the southern hemisphere and a research and development hub that will concentrate on fields such as biomedical research, cleantech, agri-food sciences, advanced manufacturing and information and communications. Apartment blocks as high as 50 storeys and a lakeside entertainment precinct with restaurants, cafes, theatres, galleries and performing arts centres are also on the cards in a bid to lure up to 80,000 residents, 50,000 students and 100,000 workers.
According to its website, AEC has memorandums of understanding to partner with global companies IBM, Honeywell, and Cisco, “who will establish industry-led innovation within our flagship location”. The Australian Education City consortium did not reply to Star Weekly’s questions by deadline. In August last year, Wyndham major projects director Kate Roffey called on the state government to turn around Werribee’s dole bludger reputation by committing to the East Werribee Employment Precinct.
Cause close to her heart Raising awareness of ovarian and cervical cancer is a cause close to the heart of Werribee woman Charlotte Robinson. Sadly, in March last year, Mrs Robinson’s friend Paula died after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Coincidentally, Mrs Robinson decided to see her own GP after chatting to Paula about the illness. “Two days of tests and scans showed I actually did have a tumour on my ovary,” Mrs Robinson said. “It was very big, and lucky for me, it was removed four weeks later as a borderline tumour [pre-cancerous],” she said. Mrs Robinson said her mother also had cervical cancer, but lived for 35 years after her diagnosis. Last year, Mrs Robinson hosted an afternoon tea for her family and friends, to raise funds for Ovarian Cancer Australia.
Although she hoped to raise $500 through the event, she raised more than $1500. Works begin on road upgrades
By Alesha Capone The opening of a new school in Wyndham Vale was cause for celebration last week. Families, students and staff gathered at Wyndham Christian College, located near the Wyndham Vale Christian Centre on Ballan Road, for the event. The college, which is still under construction, is a sister school to Heatherton Christian College in Melbourne’s south-east. The Wyndham Vale school opened for prep to grade 4 pupils in term one of this year, and will add a new grade level, up to year 12, each year.

Drivers can expect more traffic delays with road works now under way at the Forsyth Road interchange. Barriers are now being placed along the Princes Freeway median strip to allow for the widening of the Forsyth Road bridge, which will include some overnight lane closures and speed reductions. The project will also add an extra lane in each direction along Forsyth Road; will realign Forsyth and Old Geelong roads to connect to Ashcroft Avenue; and replace the roundabout at Ashcroft Avenue with traffic lights. The Forsyth Road upgrade is part of a $1.8 billion western roads package to upgrade seven Wyndham roads between now and 2021 and upgrade and maintain more than 260 kilometres of arterial roads between Werribee and Footscray over the next 20 years. State Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said: “Whether it’s building more lanes to slash congestion, improving key intersections or carrying out vital upgrades or rehab work – we’re delivering for drivers and communities in Melbourne’s west”. Within the next eight years, the school’s population is expected to grow to about 1450 children. The executive principal of the school’s two campuses, Peter Cliffe, said that the school had received about 615 inquiries about enrolments before it opened this year. “We’ve made a very smooth staff start, the kids have settled in well and the staff are fantastic,” Mr Cliffe said. Wyndham City Church senior minister Roland Tankard, said plans to build a school at the site date back to the 1970s. Sea change pays off By Alesha Capone Hoppers Crossing resident Tony Barbara says he has enjoyed volunteering with the Werribee Coast Guard for the past 17 years – even the time he fell in the water. Mr Barbara recently received a National Service Award from Australian Volunteer Coast Guard, in honour of his long service with the organisation. The 75-year-old joked that he is both “the oldest and longest-serving member” of the Werribee Coast Guard, which is also known as VF10 (Victorian Flotilla 10).

Help wanted for fire plans Land and fire management agencies are calling on residents of Tarneit, Truganina, Melton and Wyndham Vale to develop plans to reduce the bushfire risk to households near Melbourne’s western grasslands. Forest Fire Management Victoria’s forest and fire planning regional manager, Damien Taylor, said the planning process aimed to address fire risks on public and private land. Mr Barbara joined the Coast Guard in 2002, after he retired, because of his fondness for fishing and the water. He started as a Coast Guard volunteer, and soon became a familiar face to many in the community, as one of his main duties was manning the Werribee South boat ramps. His duties included collecting fees, assisting people to get on and off boats and helping boats that got into trouble. “One of the funniest things which occurred was when I tried to help a fellow with his boat and I fell in the water,” Mr Barbara said. “I had my wallet in my pocket and all, it was fun.” Mr Barbara said his favourite part of being a Coast Guard was the other volunteers. “I enjoy the company of all the people there,” he said. “We’re always looking for new volunteers, the more, the merrier.” Details: www.coastguard.com.au

The complaint-handling processes of local councils will be put under the microscope under a new Victorian Ombudsman inquiry. The Ombudsman will survey all 79 Victorian councils on their processes, including whether they make it easy for people to complain, how complaints are recorded, and if they take appropriate action to resolve complaints. The findings are expected to be released in mid-2019. Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass said the survey results aimed to identify areas where councils can improve. Ms Glass said complaints about local government account for about a quarter of all complaints to the office each year. “Given the breadth of services councils provide to Victorian communities, this comes as no surprise,” Ms Glass said. “But it is important that councils themselves are responsive to the concerns being raised.” Last year, Wyndham council received six complaints through the Ombudsman – three relating to a “perceived” lack of action about noise disturbances, two relating to rates notices, and one regarding nature strip damage. The council’s city operations director, Stephen Thorpe, said the council had a three-stage process for complaints. “The first is the investigation of operational complaints by the supervisor responsible for the area that provided the service,” Mr Thorpe said. “The complaint is then referred to a senior manager of the department. “If still unhappy, an individual can refer their complaint to the chief executive officer. “If an individual is not satisfied, they are then able to refer the complaint to external agencies, like the Victorian Ombudsman.”
A young opera singer from Werribee will be setting up shop at Queen Victoria market next week. Baritone Daniel Felton will join 21 other performers from Opera Scholars Australia (OSA), a professional development and scholarship program for young classical singers, in the concert. After finishing secondary school, he completed a bachelor of music with honours at the University of Melbourne’s Conservatorium of Music. Manor Lakes offers a head start By Charlene Macaulay Junior high school students are being given the chance to learn beyond their years. Manor Lakes P-12 College last year introduced an enrichment program that teaches year 7 and 8 students advanced curriculum based on their individual needs. Students have to pass a testing process to determine their academic level. Manor Lakes College secondary principal Renee Liprino said while a number of schools offer accelerated subjects for older high school students, Manor Lakes College is one of only a
few offering this type of accelerated learning to younger year levels. Ms Liprino said all enrichment students also do a music component, and there is also the option to do sport and participate in a new chess club. “It’s not just about academics, we want to build the whole student,” she said. Enrichment program co-ordinator Jayne Arnold-Harsley added: “Enrichment kids in general either learn a musical instrument at home – hence the music program – and many of them already train in martial arts”. Year 8 enrichment student Sreeja Gullapalli
is studying a number of subjects at year 9 level, and maths at year 10 level. “It’s a chance for me to really take the next step in my learning,” she said. “Overall, I’ve felt it’s really helped me. I can feel myself learning so much more.” Year 7 student Hamza Dar applied for the program after his older brother took part last year, and is now studying a number of subjects at year 8 level. Cooking up west’s best Fancy a fromage a trois or dumpling showdown between Asian and Italian? Foodies will be spoilt for choice when 25 events are held across the west as part of next month’s Eat Drink Westside program. The program was launched last Thursday at Newport’s Heart of Hall Cooking School, which has teamed up with Williamstown’s Gem Pier Seafoods to host The Drunken Sailor cooking class with nautical-inspired cocktails. The regional event, part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, is a partnership between Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley and Wyndham councils. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the program showcased small businesses, producers, cafes, restaurants, wine bars and shops across the west.
“From grape-stomping to seafood showcases and foodie master classes, Eat Drink Westside is guaranteed to surprise and delight the senses,” he said. Breastfeeding help on call By Alesha Capone Two Wyndham women are helping mothers struggling with breastfeeding. Wyndham Vale’s Sharon Phillips and Renee Emerson, of Werribee, volunteer for the National Breastfeeding Helpline. The 24-hour helpline, which is celebrating its 10th birthday this year, is run by the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) and entirely staffed by volunteers. Both women are qualified breastfeeding counsellors, having completed a certificate IV in breastfeeding education. “We get a large variety of calls – about brand-new babies, trouble-shooting, mastitis, sore nipples, weaning and other matters,” Mrs Emerson said. “We tell mums that breastfeeding is natural, normal and beautiful, but it is a learned skill and often you need support. “It’s just so rewarding, getting off the phone and knowing you have made a difference to someone’s day.” Ms Phillips said that sometimes the helpline got calls from mothers and fathers who were in hospital just after a baby’s birth. She said the helpline received calls from across Australia. “Mums find it pretty amazing – we are in Melbourne and we can talk to mums in Perth and Darwin,” she said. Ms Phillips said that the ABA held breastfeeding education classes, including at the Arndell Park Community Centre in Truganina. Get your paddle on Ken and Judy Holmes are encouraging residents to explore the Werribee River. The couple, who have lived in Werribee for 31 years, said they often kayaked and canoed along the river and believe it’s an asset that could be used more. “What I enjoy most is the beauty of the river and the scenery,” Mr Holmes said. “Locally, we have been from Werribee South mouth to Maribyrnong and the Werribee Mansion, and the Werribee weir upstream toward Melton for about 12 kilometres.” Mr Holmes said that with Wyndham council’s long-term plan to make the river more of a centerpiece in the Werribee CBD, activities which utilised the river should be encouraged. The couple wants to get more people involved in kayaking on the river. “We have the idea of facilitating a couple of ‘Come Kayaking/Canoeing with me’ days,” Mr Holmes said. “There must be plenty of people who have canoes or kayaks sitting around in the garage.” The come and try days will be held on Sunday, March 3 and March 17 at 10am. MY WYNDHAM Husband and wife Frank and Anna Mollica own Hair News in Werribee. This year, they celebrate 39 years of operating their Watton Street salon. They chat with Alesha Capone. Did you meet through work? Mr Mollica: No, we met at a dance. Mrs Mollica: But we both worked at Anthony’s, me in Werribee and Frank in Footscray. Mr Mollica: We decided to do our own thing. We went on to work in Gladstone Park, Deer Park, Highpoint and I managed a salon in Hardware Lane too. We went everywhere else, and then came back to Werribee.

Mr Mollica: There was none of this angle parking, people would park on the side of the road. There were no roundabouts or lights, we saw the first set of lights installed at the corner of Watton and Station streets. We would have young people come down the main street on horses. Mrs Mollica: We’d also get people drag racing down the main street. Mr Mollica: We started slow and the salon has grown into what it is today. We have third generations of customers come in. We pride ourselves on being family-oriented. We cut kid’s hair, we do anyone who’s got hair. We have two children and four grandchildren, and

What was it like when you first opened Hair News?
I cut my grandson’s hair the other day. My Dad was a hairdresser, I followed in his footsteps. One of my sisters is a hairdresser too. What else has changed through the years? Mrs Mollica: What we do with hair has changed from roller-settings and finger-waves, now into blow-waving and finger-waving. Mr Mollica: One of the things is parking. Years
ago, people would come in and it didn’t worry them. Now, with a hair cut, if it takes two to three hours to do that, if you’re parking for that long in some spots, you get a fine. Now we find that people go to the plaza, because they’re not worried about time limits there. This has affected the business. I remember when we first came here, if you wanted chicken, there was no chicken shop – the closest KFC was in Footscray.
What do you like about Werribee? Mrs Mollica: The socialising, the people are more homely. Mr Mollica: It’s grown into a city, but it’s still got a country and family feel. Werribee’s grown beautifully but it’s too big for the roads it has. Years ago, we had a small hospital – we’ve now got a bigger one, that’s a good change.

Werribee Shire Council has no plans to seek additional territory from adjoining municipalities at the Local Government Inquiry into the boundaries of six western suburbs municipalities, including Werribee. On the contrary, Werribee Shire has an area of land it would not mind giving away!
Not even 34 years and thousands of kilometres could keep Hoppers Crossing’s Jean Harrison and London’s Audrey O’Sullivan apart last week. The sisters, who have not seen each other since 1954 when Mrs Harrison left England for Australia, met at Melbourne Airport last week.
An eleventh-hour change of heart on Monday night by at least two councillors is believed to have paved the way for Wyndham council to refuse a permit for a controversial Hoppers Crossing brothel proposal. Not one of Wyndham’s seven councillors publicly voted against the refusal, a move which was in contrast to an original council officers’ recommendation to grant the proposed Dunlop Avenue brothel a permit with strict guidelines.
Hundreds of mourners packed into Southland Christian Centre in Hoppers Crossing on Monday for a memorial service to celebrate the life of Werribee man Greg Lloyd, who called his family to tell them he loved them before dying in the Black Saturday bushfires. The 22 year old, his girlfriend, Melanee Hermocilla, 23, and her brother, Jaeson, 21, all died while looking after Mr Lloyd’s father’s house at Yarra Glen.

FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? RQ: I’d say I can hold my own without being an expert. I went through a stage, I think, when my wife went back to work after our first kid and I was in the kitchen quite a bit, so through necessity I sort of learned to cook a little bit. It’s been good. I like playing around with some foods. FB: Is the kitchen somewhere you feel comfortable? RQ: Yeah, yeah, definitely. Something like a big, heavy roast I’m probably not great at. (When) I had my wife over before we were married, I attempted to make dinner. I cooked a roast chook. I was wondering why it was taking so long to cook. I took it out and thought ‘Look, stuff it. It’s been in long enough’ and realised I’d cooked it upside down. It was actually really juicy - obviously the fillets are at the bottom instead of the top. I turned it over and it was moist and tasty, so it worked out OK. I might be onto something, because I’ve accidentally done it since as well. FB: What is your signature dish? RQ: It’s something that my dad used to cook. It’s called Crispy Chicken Casserole. It’s not the greatest for you, but like all things that aren’t great for you, it tastes bloody great. You get a roast chook, you pull it apart, you add mayo, slivered almonds, cheese, celery and spring onion, put it in a baking dish and cover it with Smith’s potato chips, all crushed up. You put it in the oven and away you go. It comes out and you serve it with chips or potato gems, depending on how healthy you’re feeling. You probably need to throw some veggies in there as well, but we never did. FB: What do you like to drink? RQ: With it? In summer, a glass of Pino Grigio whilst I’m cooking and then another one with dinner. Through the winter stages, you marry it up with red meat … you start with a Pino, and if there’s only half a bottle of Pino left, you have that and then you go onto a Shiraz. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? RQ: Andy Lee and his brother Cam, Matthew Richardson, Scott Pippin and my dad, who passed away 10 years ago. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? RQ: Yes, it was one I got from my dad. When you’re cooking, if you’ve got time to at least rinse some things, if you can, wash them before you sit down and eat. Do as much as the cleaning up as possible if you can juggle it while cooking and/or serving. My other tip – which my sister does – is that she cooks and her husband does the dishes.
ROB’S CRISPY CHICKEN CASSEROLE Rob’s kindly provided us with his dad’s special recipe if you’d like to give it a crack. Let us know how you go! INGREDIENTS: 1 whole roast chook (torn apart) A few celery sticks, chopped A few spring onions, chopped 2/3 to a whole jar of mayonnaise 2 and a half cups slivered almonds (slightly browned) 2 to 3 handfuls grated cheese METHOD: Gather contents in a big bowl. Mix together with clean hands until it’s consistently mixed. Put in baking dish. Crunch up one large packet full of Smith’s Original chips and sprinkle chips over the top. Bake at 180 degrees for around 35 to 45 minutes. Serve with chips or potato gems.

McNally believes it takes time and familiarity for a genuine community to form. “You see each other walking up and down the stairs or in the carpark,” she says,
“Once someone becomes familiar, you start up a chat.” Both Anderson-Oliver and McNally acknowledge it could be harder to create a sense of community in larger apartment blocks. But Anderson-Oliver reiterates the value of inviting spaces such as sky-bars,
hang-out spaces on different floors and cafes in large buildings. They both believe “soft infrastructure” is vital – for example, organised events and apartment block Facebook pages. This is an edited version of a Domain story by Melissa Howard.

When urban planner Mitra Anderson-Oliver, 33, moved into a 300-dwelling apartment block in Melbourne’s Kew two years ago, she knew she’d have to make some changes. “I decided that the only way apartment living could work for me is if I have a community garden,” she says. She is now part of the new 40-member gardening committee and the “game-changer” communal garden is starting to take shape. As apartment living continues to rapidly rise, Anderson-Oliver, husband Daniel and their son, Heath, 1, are part of a growing trend of vertical communities. “There’s this idea that if you live in an apartment block, you can’t possibly have real community,” Anderson-Oliver says. “I just think that’s so untrue. Just because people live on a street – in a suburb, in a detached house – doesn’t mean that they have community.” She reckons that just as with horizontal living, it’s accidental interactions, supported by “sticky spaces” – communal areas that invite people to stick around – that help form connections. “The common areas of an apartment block are where the community either lives or dies,” she says. “Otherwise you’re just a collection of little boxes and there’s nowhere to actually meet or circulate.” In Sydney, high-density homes such as apartments will soon outnumber detached dwellings. Business administrator Rachael McNally, 38, has lived in a two-bedroom apartment in Bronte for five years. She knows nearly

SPORT Tigers make short work of Moorabbin Kicking your feet up and celebrating victory just after 4pm is the definition of a perfect day for a cricketer. Those days do not come around too often, but Werribee had that satisfaction on Saturday after a surprisingly quick dismantling of Moorabbin in a 138-run win in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west group at Moorleigh Community Village Reserve. The Tigers had readied themselves for a long and hot day in the field, but they exceeded their expectations in routing Moorabbin just after tea for 88. Tigers skipper Tim O’Brien was pleased to have “rock and rolled them” early. “We were pretty happy with today’s win because Moorabbin have been in pretty good form,” O’Brien said. “We treated it like a rehearsal for finals and how we want to take it, and the boys came out to play.
“We’ll take a lot of confidence out of it.” Werribee posted 226 off 72.4 overs on the first day. The Tigers’ bowlers ripped in early in the day to set the tone and Moorabbin’s hopes diminished fast. “We knew the first hour was very important because their best players are at the top of their list,” O’Brien said. “Their two openers [Romain Grenville and Vishva Wijeratne] are probably the key, they’re the ones who make the most of their runs, and Jono Burton got them out in his first two overs. “We had them 2-5 with their best two batsmen in the sheds. “They have three good batsmen and we had to get at least two of them out to put us in a good position and we did that pretty early.” Burton was back to his best for Werribee. Not even an interrupted preparation could stop him producing the tidy figures of 2-7 off
12 overs, including seven maidens. “It was good to have Jono back,” O’Brien said. “He actually had a bit of a rough night before the game because his young fella was in hospital.” Michael Kelly had a superb outing for Werribee. The spinner ripped through the middle and lower order to take 4-36 off 11.3 overs. Kelly claimed the key scalp of Karl Carver for 22. O’Brien returned to bowling after a shoulder injury to claim 2-9 off four overs. Bradley Apps provided the highlight of the day for Werribee with the run out of Calvyn Walker off his own bowling. Bees revel in goal rush By Lance Jenkinson Werribee City is on a scoring spree in the National Premier League 2 west. The entertaining Bees have scored nine goals in two outings as opposition defences struggle. The Bees made it two wins from two starts with a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over Brunswick City on the road at Dunstan Reserve on Saturday. They are the big ticket in town after surging to the top of the ladder. Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini wanted more goals this season and he is getting his wish early in the season. “It’s good to see us scoring,” he said. “It’s been one of our focuses for the whole pre-season.” Werribee City was the first side on the scoresheet in the eight-goal bonanza when Alec Goodwin found the back of the net in the eighth minute. But the Bees conceded the next three goals – all scored by Brunswick City striker Kwabena Boahene. Despite giving up a goal a minute before half-time and again after the break, Werribee City remained focused on launching a comeback. “We went down 2-1 at half-time, but the players were still very confident,” Sabbadini said. “They were like, ‘We’ll get back into this – things just haven’t gone our way’.” After the concession of a third goal, Werribee City sprung to life with an incredible period of play between the 57th and 72nd minutes. The Bees ran riot to score four goals and blow the home side off the park. “We just went crazy,” Sabbadini said. It all started in the midfield for Werribee City, where Jake Butler was once again in total control of the game’s flow. The Bees vice-captain topped his game off with two goals, taking his tally to four goals in two games. “He scored two cracking goals,” Sabbadini said. “He was tremendous all day, but he really controlled the whole second half. “He prepares himself really well. He’s always the first one out at training and always one of the last back in.” Takanori Nishimoto was full of energy for Werribee City off the bench. The left midfielder scored the Bees’ third goal and could be in line for a start in the next game. Bees captain Brad Murray and Dion Paola were busy in the central third. Much of Werribee City’s drive came from the back, where the speed of Tyler James and Lisandro Paz proved damaging. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The Footscray Edgewater Cricket Club is justifiably proud of the top-line players it has produced over the years – Travis Dean captaining the state side the latest milestone to add to the club history. A club that has produced the likes of Eastwood, Joslin, Miller, Gaunt, Hughes, Dodemaide, Hurst and Bright has a lot to be proud of. Last weekend club stalwarts Rainer Reber, Graeme Joslin and Geoff Collinson joined the Bulldogs Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame boasts some of the previous names mentioned plus Barry Watson, Michael O’Keefe and Vid Richardson. Congratulations to three great servants of the club. Well deserved. ■ Rhys Contessa is a relatively new face around the Whitten Oval as a part of the membership services team. But the Contessa name is not new, with brother Adam a former Bulldogs player – 45 games in the late ’90s – and current committee member of the past players and officials association. Rhys kept a family tradition going by being awarded Life Membership to the Royal Park-Brunswick Cricket Club last week, joining six other family members sharing that prestigious honour. ■ The final weekend of the home and away cricket season is coming up, and there is still a lot riding on the results, not only for finals aspirants but those in the relegation zone. In the subbies, Werribee is in, but Hoppers Crossing could fall out if it loses to ladder-leaders Caulfield, which might allow Yarraville to sneak into sixth. In the VTCA, Yarraville Club Cricket Club needs its bowlers to fire Strathmore out to avoid relegation but other results will factor in as well. The club is missing first XI finals for the first time in almost two decades and that stings. ■ Avalon Airport Oval hosts two big games this weekend as the real footy returns. Saturday, North Melbourne plays St Kilda in the opening round of the JLT Community series from 1.10pm. On Sunday, it’s round 5 of the AFLW with North Melbourne playing the Adelaide Crows. Neither game is a Werribee Football Club event but it is hosting a pre game function on the Sunday from 2.30pm featuring AFLW chief executive Nicole Livingstone, Collingwood star Sharni Layton and Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw. Tickets are available via the club online shop. The game starts at 4.05pm. In other news Williamstown’s home will now be known as Downer Oval, the result of a new partnership with Downer EDI Ltd. Hoppers Crossing braces for a ‘monster’ challenge Out-of-form Hoppers Crossing has a mountain to climb if it wants to be part of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west finals. Three losses in a row have seen the Cats tumble to sixth on the ladder and in need of a win in the last round to preserve their place in the finals. The Cats need to beat premiership favourite Caulfield on its home track in a one-day game this Saturday to qualify. Should the Cats fail to beat Caulfield, they will be at the mercy of four sides ready to pounce – Yarraville, Melton, Brighton and Elsternwick. Cats player-coach Greg Kennedy admits the Caulfield challenge is great. “We’ve left ourselves a monster of a task,” he said. “Going to Caulfield to take them on, needing to win on their deck, you’ve just got to play the best game we have all season.

“What better way to prepare yourself for finals if you’re good enough?” Hoppers Crossing faces this predicament after falling short by 81 runs in its chase for Oakleigh’s 8-279 at Hogans Road Reserve. The Cats were made to rue their slow start, in which
Jack Rhodes and Adrian Myers were dismissed for ducks and Cameron Nicol was gone soon after for 14. At 3-34, Hoppers Crossing needed a big partnership, but Trent Said (29), Luke Goegan (15) and Nick Keast (42) departed when the Cats appeared to be gaining some momentum. The killer was the run-out of top-scorer Keast. He was victim to a spectacular piece of fielding that Oakleigh fed off for the rest of the hot afternoon. “That one was quite a momentum killer,” Kennedy said. “We had made a nice rearguard action to that point, we got ourselves back with a stable base, but it happened just before the tea break. “A brilliant bit of fielding, a one-handed pick-up and a direct hit from almost side on – it was a really good bit of fielding. “It was a moment that we look back on as a key point in the day.”
Hoppers Crossing still had fight in it, which pleased Kennedy. Captain Justin Goegan (38) and Brett Smith (39) combined for a 65-run partnership to breathe life into the innings. After Goegan was dismissed, Kennedy (11 no) remained optimistic he could build a strong partnership with Smith, but Smith was removed a short time later. “When I went out there with Brett, it was not quite a run a ball and we thought we could do it, but we could never get going,” Kennedy said. For all the losses that have piled up and the task that is in front of them, Hoppers Crossing still hold its destiny in its own hands. “It’s cut-throat, time to perform,” Kennedy said. “The whole club is up and about after the twos, threes and fours qualified for finals. “It will be an exciting week to be around the club.” Lance Jenkinson

The reigning premiers were comprehensively beaten by 32 points in the grand final re-match with the Brisbane Lions at the Whitten Oval on Saturday. Rocci rocks to the title By Lance Jenkinson When Maddison Rocci re-signed with Canberra Capitals in the Women’s National Basketball League last off season, it was done with an element of trust. There are no guarantees in sport, but Rocci was sold on the Capitals’ ambitions and big plans to go from also-rans to contenders. After the Capitals finished sixth out of eight teams and eight games back from first place in 2017-18, winning a championship was probably the furthest thing from Rocci’s mind entering the new season. She did, however, want to see stark improvement in the team and be part of it in her sophomore season. As the 2018-19 season rolled on, belief snowballed in Canberra – leading to championship glory. The Capitals ticked off their first goal by reaching the finals, then took out the minor premiership. They had become the team to beat heading into the finals. “Last season was a rough one,” said Rocci, 20, a Werribee product. “We didn’t go as well as we wanted to. When they re-signed me, they said
that they were looking to recruit some big-time players and improve on how we did last year. “I guess I had trust in them, but I didn’t think in my second season I’d have a WNBL championship already.” Rocci’s importance to Canberra rose dramatically on the back of an injury to star player Leilani Mitchell. Rocci was suddenly thrust into a bigger role in a sink-or-swim situation. It was a chance for Rocci to take centre stage and show what she could do in the spotlight. She rose to the challenge, upping her minutes and statistical output across the board. “I just wanted to show the league that I’m here, I’m ready to play,” she said. “Coming into this year, I had more confidence and I was ready to go.” Rocci’s faith in the Capitals, her growth as a player and trust in her own game have seen her realise a childhood dream. Her former Werribee Devils coach, Lloyd Klaman, describes her as a “basketball nut”. Talking with Rocci for a even short time reveals how true that is. From a young age, Rocci watched the WNBL and wondered what it would be like to stand atop the podium as a champion.
She got to experience that sensation with the Capitals, who beat Adelaide Lightning 2-1 in the best-of-three grand final series. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet,” Rocci said. “Words really can’t describe how much it does mean to me to win this championship.” Rocci will never forget the adulation the Canberra sports public heaped on the championship-winning Capitals. She was thrilled to play in front of packed home crowds in the AIS Arena. “That roar when we came on to the court for the first time – I got shivers down my spine,” she said. Rocci will forever cherish the moments after the 93-73 win in game three. After a “crazy” week, she finally got a chance to share the achievement with her family. “On Saturday, we had a big party afterwards and on Tuesday we had a parade, which was great to see all those fans there,” she said. “I headed home Wednesday afternoon to spend some time with family.” Rocci cannot get enough basketball. She will rest for just two weeks before she begins pre-season with Sunshine Coast Rip City in preparation for the Queensland Basketball League season.

The Centurions made an unremarkable 111 in 53.1 overs against Kingsville at Skinner Reserve, but hit back with three late wickets to have the home side on 3-50. If Kingsville gets the 62 runs for victory, the Centurions will keep hold of a finals spot only if Altona Roosters and Williamstown CYMS are defeated.

Werribee is not out of the relegation woods in Bowls Victoria division 1. The Bees are 11 points above the relegation zone after an 83-77 loss to Sunbury at Chirnside Park on Saturday. The Bees could mathematically be usurped by second-last Melton in the final round. Entry and exit is easy and the driver’s seat is wide, supportive and comfortable. The steering wheel is both tilt and reach adjustable. Our test car was the relatively Spartan 2.5-litre petrol entry-level Life. Fuel consumption is listed at 8.1 litres per 100 km. We averaged 9.6 L/100 km during our usual blend of urban, motorway and rural conditions. Expect double figures in exclusively city driving. Suspension is a little harsh and relatively firm without making the ride uncomfortable. Steering is light and direct.
Summing up
Koleos is an attractive, capable family-sized SUV with excellent interior space and a high level of safety equipment. It certainly doesn’t deserve to trail its market-leading competitors to the extent that it does and so is well worth a comparison test drive.
