Warning on social sell trap Wyndham police are calling on residents to beware of selling goods through social media and online marketplaces following a spate of incidents in which people have been assaulted in their homes by opportunistic thieves posing as buyers. Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches from Wyndham police said four Wyndham residents had been assaulted this year to date and had their mobile phones stolen after trying to sell the devices online. “They’re hinging off unaccountable social media platforms – such as Gumtree and Facebook sales – where it’s really easy to create an agreement to meet at the person’s house to look at the phone,” he said of the thieves. “People are trusting … the person arrives at the address and the minute the phone is handed over for inspection … the offenders are assaulting the owners of the phones in the front doorway and running off. “Quite often, we’ve found that the phones are put into a box and posted overseas, sometimes South Africa, and within 24 hours the phone’s out of the country, which creates other challenges in terms of restitution and investigation avenues.” Senior Sergeant Riches said the assaults had ranged from “a big push” to being punched in the head. No weapons had been involved in the attacks. Police believe different offenders have been responsible for each Wyndham attack, with arrests made in three out of the four offences. The targets tend to be young people under the age of 24.
“We know for a fact it’s a statewide trend,” he said. “These social media platforms facilitate this type of offence, as opposed to eBay, where it’s a no-contact type of arrangement and the items are posted with tracking once the payment is made and it’s accountable – the people’s accounts have to have bona fide details. “We would prefer if people use [eBay] to avoid becoming victims.”

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Hatt from the Southern Metro Region Crime Team said: “There is a common misconception that getting the buyer to attend your home is the safest way to sell your mobile phone, however our intelligence shows this is where the thefts are most commonly taking place.” The crime trend comes a year after at least six Wyndham cases in which people were lured to suburban streets at night on the pretense of selling their phones, only to have them snatched from them. That trend has since stopped. Police said that if residents wanted to sell items online, they should arrange to meet buyers in public places where there are CCTV cameras; meet buyers at times when a lot of people are likely to be around; and take a friend or a family member.

Motorists demand action on chaotic intersection A group of Werribee residents is seeing red over a set of traffic lights causing chaos during the morning and afternoon peak. The Westleigh Gardens Facebook page has been inundated with posts from residents over the past fortnight complaining about traffic light sequencing at the Geelong Road and Werribee Street intersection. According to residents, only five to six vehicles can turn right onto the Werribee Street bridge from Geelong Road during a green

light, causing traffic queues up to more than a kilometre during the morning and afternoon peak hour and turning a 10 minute-trip into Werribee’s CBD into a 25-plus minute drive. They have called on VicRoads to change the
sequencing of lights at the intersection to allow more cars to pass through. It’s believed the traffic queues have been caused by the recent closure of nearby Alfred Road for drainage works, which has resulted in more traffic travelling through the intersection to access Ballan Road. Alfred Road is expected to re-open in mid-April. VicRoads movement and safety manager Jason Stakic said it would review the sequencing, including the operation of the
right turn signals from Geelong Road into Werribee Street and whether any changes can be made to improve traffic flow. “Recent works and road closures in the area have resulted in some disruptions,” Mr Stakic said. “While these works are important, we understand how frustrating it is for drivers to be stuck in traffic.” Charlene Macaulay

World War II gun mounts discovered at a Werribee South carpark may once again be covered up under a recommendation before Wyndham council. A heritage report found that as the gun mounts – or gun emplacement pads – were used for training for anti-aircraft guns during World War II and the site was not a manned defence location, their archaeological value was considered to be low, despite holding “moderate local heritage significance”. It recommended that while the gun mounts be kept exposed during the carpark redevelopment works to allow for archaeological recording, “it
will be necessary for them to be covered to allow for establishment of the car parking bays”. “While it is acknowledged that there is limited space within the carpark area, making exposure of the emplacements as a feature untenable, it is proposed that the outline of the emplacements is marked using coloured pavers set into asphalt or a similar method, based on the survey plan. “This would not restrict use of carpark bays, but would identify the location of the features and allow interpretation of the use of the area during World War II.” The council commissioned the historical heritage assessment after contractors working near the corner of Duncans and Beach roads

The $11.5 million extension of Armstrong Road in Wyndham Vale has been completed. Wyndham council announced the opening of the road extension, which provides a connection between Greens and Blackforest roads, last week. Mayor Mia Shaw said the extension would shorten travel times for residents, including to the Wyndham Vale train station, and reduce traffic on other roads in the area. “By reducing reliance on local roads, we’re also making our roads safer for drivers, and get people home to their families sooner,” Cr Shaw said. “This project is just one of many that we’re currently delivering across Wyndham. “In this year’s budget, we allocated $146 million to capital works, with $37 going directly to local roads.” Cr Shaw said works to rebuild and widen Forsyth Road, between Old Geelong and Sayers roads, were also “progressing well”. “This particular project is being completed ahead of the state government’s upgrade of the Forsyth Road Freeway interchange, to alleviate as much disruption as possible,” she said. “We’re also upgrading a 2.8 kilometre stretch of Boundary Road, between Derrimut Road and the Regional Rail Link bypass, sealing the existing surface and making the shoulders safer.” See https://www.wyndham.vic.gov. au/services/major-projects-home for more details.

ust when we thought it was a quiet start to the year, along comes a federal election to invade our senses for the next few months. Clive Palmer is leading the way with an advertising campaign that is all about saturating the airwaves with his head and his message – We’re not gonna cop it. Oh, if only we didn’t have to. If you got votes based on the number of ads bought, he would be in for a landslide victory. If annoying was an election platform, he would be winning that at the moment too. The big winner here is the media outlets raking in big dollars and Twisted Sister. The forgotten ’80s rock band’s lead singer Dee Snider has been milking a plagiarism dispute and boosting ticket sales for the band’s tour. I am sure conspiracy theorists are having a ball with this scenario. Could Clive and Dee be playing all of us on this one? The current PM (ScoMo) and the PM in waiting (Shorto) are on the Tommy Lee Jones Fugitive tour of the country – ‘every residence, warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse’.
They are wearing hard hats, crash helmets, caps, high viz, ties, no ties, suits and jeans in their role as headline-grabbing chameleons. The pair is answering every inane question in the book and nothing is sacred, including what happens during a Prime Ministerial trip to the urinal. I would rather hear another Clive Palmer tuneless advertisement than get a detailed account of what goes on there. The issues tend to get lost and buried under layers of party rhetoric and personal jibes. I find it hard to concentrate on the point of anyone’s argument when there are half a dozen nodding sycophants in the background looking like they are in some sort of trance or gazing adoringly at the ear lobes of the speaker. Only Mr Spock, Shrek or Chopper Read have ears that deserve that kind of attention. Scaremongering from all sides seems to be the most effective means of campaigning, which is an insult to voters and a sad reflection on the desperation to gain power at any cost. All this and it is only mid February and no date yet announced. â– â–

A student was taken to hospital after an alleged assault at a Hoppers Crossing school on February 12. Police and emergency services were called to reports of an assault at the Fraser Street school just after 11am. School numbers don’t add up By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham children have access to half the number of primary and secondary schools compared to those across Greater Melbourne, new data has revealed. According to the council’s Schools 4 Wyndham website, there are 1.3 secondary schools available per 5000 children in Wyndham’s growth areas, compared to 2.7 schools for students across Greater Melbourne – and this disparity is expected to grow, with an estimated 150,000 children to attend

Wyndham schools over the next 20 years. The website states that Wyndham is also home to some of the most overcrowded schools in Victoria. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said on average, 1161 students aged between five and 17 are enrolled across 13 schools in Wyndham’s
high-growth areas. In comparison, there are 570 students enrolled per school on average across 760 government schools in Greater Melbourne. The council has called on the state government to fund the land acquisition and construction of five primary schools, and construction of secondary schools for Truganina and Tarneit, as part of its 2019-20 state budget. “Council has held regular meetings with a broad range of MPs on the issue of schools in Wyndham,” Cr Shaw said. “We have also been meeting consistently
with the department of education and training to help guide their delivery of future schools so that they are built in the areas that need them. “We have been pleased with the Victorian government’s willingness to co-operate with us on this issue and we look forward to working more closely with them on the planning and designing of education infrastructure, as recommended by the Victorian Auditor General.” The state government did not respond to Star Weekly’s questions about funding for schools in the 2019-20 budget.
Generation gap filled For two families at a Hoppers Crossing school, it’s a case of history repeating itself. Daniel Smith and Matthew Undy attended Derrimut Heath Primary School when they were children. Mr Smith’s sister also attended the school from prep to grade 6. This year, Mr Smith’s son, CJ, and Mr Undy’s daughter, Sadie, are enrolled as prep pupils at the school, which is part of Baden Powell College. Mr Undy said that Sadie was excited her dad had attended the school before her. Mr Smith said CJ felt the same. “I took him on a tour of the school and I think it gelled with him and made him more excited, knowing his aunty and I had both come here,” Mr Smith said. He said he was a student at the school until about year 10, and felt he had a “strong connection”, especially with former principal Nal Manolakakis, who has since passed away.
Mr Smith said that as a youngster, he would water the school lawns and helped to build a rotunda that still stands in the school grounds. “It was just a really good school and I really want CJ to have that same connection with the school as I had,” he said. Mr Undy said that while visiting the school with Sadie, he had enjoyed seeing some of his former teachers and staff members still working there. “With key teachers we had through the years, it was really good in the way they taught,” he said. Break-in spree at Alamanda
This 17-year-old pianist is gearing up for the performance of a lifetime. Tarneit’s Ivanka Fernando will be performing at the Melbourne Recital Centre next month after being selected to participate in the Top Class Music concert. Top Class is an initiative of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority that features the work of students who received very high grades for their VCE performance examinations in 2018. Ivanka, who completed year 12 music last year as an accelerated subject, said she had never heard of Top Class before receiving an invitation. “I was slightly shocked when I received the email,” she said. “I didn’t realise it was such a big deal.” The year 12 Thomas Carr College student first started playing when she was eight and found a natural talent and affinity for music. Ivanka says she often plays without sheet music and has been known to make up her own compositions. “If I think of a chord progression in my head I would run over to the piano and try all the chords out and [determine if] that’s a good sequence of chords and then I make it into a song,” she said. Ivanka said while her music was inspired by jazz artists, including Diana Krall, Eliane Elias and Dave Brubeck, when she was younger, she is now influenced by more “funky, gospel, RnB” artists such as Alicia Keys and Earth, Wind and Fire.
Alamanda K-9 College continues to be the target of thieves, with an attempted break-in last week the latest in a series of burglary and vandalism attempts. Star Weekly understands a lone offender was caught on the Point Cook school’s security cameras attempting to break in to a storage container in the early hours of February 11. The container was empty. The incident follows a number of break-ins and attempted break-ins at the school, including incidents on December 14 and 30 and January 3, 19 and 20. During the incidents, furniture in school buildings was “tossed around”. Beverages were tipped over inside school buildings and a fire extinguisher was set off. According to a post on the college Facebook page, the school has hired security guards in a bid to deter further break-ins. A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged after the alleged burglary on December 14. He has been charged with burglary-related matters and bailed to appear before a children’s court at a later date. Detectives from the Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit have also interviewed a 13-year-old Point Cook boy in relation to the December break-in. The boy has been released, pending further inquiries. The investigation into the other incidents is ongoing.

Centre revamp for community
Werribee’s Master Dry Cleaners has reopened at a temporary location – a week after the business was gutted by fire. The dry cleaning business set up shop in Werribee last Wednesday at the old ANZ bank site at 26 Watton Street, a short distance from the 61 Watton Street premises hit by fire. The new shop opened a week after the fire broke out about 10.30pm on February 4, causing extensive damage to the building and customers’ garments. The cause of the fire is still being determined.

Owner Jim Hudson, whose family has owned and operated dry cleaning stores in Werribee for 71 years, said the family had spent the past week sifting through what was left of the store to see what items – including customers’ garments – could be salvaged. Mr Hudson said the business had been able to save a number of wedding dresses, including an heirloom wedding dress that had been worn by a mother and daughter. “The normal clothes on the rack, at this stage we’re quite sure most of them are fine, but anything that was hanging in the air is possibly gone,” he said. “We’ve been overwhelmed by support from the community wishing us well and we’re very grateful for that.” Mr Hudson said the roof of the fire-damaged building would most likely have to be replaced and most of the dry cleaning equipment had been damaged beyond repair.

A community centre in Hoppers Crossing is undergoing a $1.1 million makeover. Work on the Central Park Community Centre is being funded with $675,000 from Wyndham council and a $425,000 grant from the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said the redevelopment of the community centre – which was built in 1996 – would include new indoor and outdoor spaces such as a community lounge, a co-working space and meeting rooms. Cr Shaw said the council last year opened its first seniors exercise park at the centre, featuring equipment designed to help seniors become more physically active. She said the latest centre project would improve access to the park. Cr Shaw said adoption of a Family Friendly City Charter committed the council to putting families “at the centre of all decisions”. “The redevelopment of the Central Park Community Centre and the introduction of the seniors exercise park are both examples of us abiding by this charter,” she said. Cr Shaw said existing services at the Central Park Community Centre would not be affected while the redevelopment was under way. The work is scheduled to finish in the middle of the year. Wigging out for a cause By Alesha Capone Most people wear sports gear when they take their place in a half marathon – but not Sebastien Wattelet. He will dress in drag when he participates in the MS Melbourne half marathon, which raises funds to support people with multiple sclerosis, on March 31. Mr Wattelet, whose wife Audrey has multiple sclerosis, will take part in the event along with 13 friends under the team name of “Not MSing around”. Mr Wattelet said a friend “dared” him to dress in drag for the half-marathon if the team managed to raise $3000. “A lot of friends and family thought is was a great idea, obviously a little embarrassing but everyone sees the fun side of it,” he said. His team has already raised almost $3800, and is aiming to reach $5000. Mr Wattelet grew up in Hoppers Crossing, and he and Audrey previously lived in Wyndham Vale. They are renting in Melton, while building a new house for their family in Bacchus March. Mr Wattelet described Audrey as an “amazing mother and wife” to himself, their teenage daughter and two young sons. “She’s the soul and heart of our family and always puts everyone before herself,” he said. Mr Wattelet said Audrey was diagnosed with MS in 2014. He said at first, she experienced minimal symptoms, but experienced a “major flare-up” in December which had caused her to go “from a vibrant, strong, active person to not being able to walk or shower on her own”. “Our kids have really stepped up – it’s amazing how resilient they are,” he said. “We have also had a huge amount of help

Historic house vandalised A heritage expert has expressed dismay after vandals removed bluestones from the remains of a Truganina historic building. Bill Strong, from the Wyndham Heritage Recovery Inc group, said he noticed bluestones missing from a wall of Missen House about two weeks ago. Missen House, located on Dohertys Road, is listed as being of “local significance” in Wyndham council’s heritage overlay. The site is known as Missen House in honour of William Missen, his wife and their seven children, a farming family who purchased the land in 1901 and built a home there four years later. Mr Strong said that in addition to bluestones being taken from the property, other bluestones from the building had simply been knocked to the ground. “We haven’t got much left in the way of history, so we have to protect what’s left,” he said. Mr Strong said he would like to see Missen House restored, much like Davis House in Moorookyle Estate in Tarneit, where developers have incorporated the remnants of the building into a park. Missen House is located on private land owned by developers who are proposing to build about 1400 dwellings nearby. Outer ring road a national priority By Charlene Macaulay A number of road and rail projects that would benefit Wyndham residents have topped a national infrastructure priority list. Infrastructure Australia last week released its 2019 priority list of works, identifying land acquisition for the Outer Metropolitan Ring Road and E6 corridor – which could include a freeway connecting the outer west and outer north spanning between four and six lanes in each direction, and four rail tracks – as a high priority project that should be implemented within the next five years.
The list, based on submissions from governments, stakeholder groups and communities, is used to recommend infrastructure projects for state and federal government funding consideration in the short, medium and long term. Other projects to make the $58 billion list include: • The electrification and duplication of the Melbourne-Geelong line as a priority initiative; • Completing the M80 Ring Road upgrade, including upgrading the Princes Freeway to Western Highway section; and • Level crossing removals.
Infrastructure Australia chair Julieanne Alroe said the projects identified in this year’s report aimed to improve living standards and productivity, particularly in Australia’s growth corridors. “Many of the projects and potential infrastructure solutions identified in their 2019 priority lists respond to the challenges of population growth in our largest cities, and address the need for frequent and accessible public transport to reduce congestion,” Ms Alroe said. “Congestion in our cities and faster-growing regional centres not only has significant
consequences for the Australian economy, but has direct impacts on communities, reducing people’s access to education, health services, employment and other opportunities.” Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said the council was happy to see these projects flagged. “Wyndham city welcomes Infrastructure Australia’s acknowledgment that the projects we have been advocating for on a federal level are of national significance and we believe this will help us make the case for greater investment in our region,” Cr Shaw said. “The Western Interstate Freight Terminal should also be considered a high priority.”

He described it as a “street dance” that is less formal than ballroom and Latin dancing. “Celia and I are very excited to be bringing over 20 years’ dancing experience to the Point Cook community,” he said. “We are both passionate advocates of swing and have travelled widely to learn and enjoy this creative, spectacular and fun art form. “I can’t wait to get people who have always thought ‘I can’t dance’ – like I used to – out on the dancefloor and swinging out with the rest of us.” Webb, a Werribee resident, said she enjoyed
teaching the various dances that come under the umbrella of swing, including the Charleston, 6 beat swing, Balboa and Lindy hop. “I just have so much fun in my classes – great music, corny jokes and fun moves are guaranteed,” she said. Kinders cash warning By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham families could be up to $2000 worse off if the federal government does not commit to its share of recurrent funding for four-year-old kindergarten. That’s the word from Wyndham council, which is ramping up its I Love Kinder campaign in a bid to pile on the pressure on the federal government to secure ongoing funding in the lead-up to the budget, which will be handed down on April 2.

Currently, the federal government has committed to funding five hours of kindergarten a week for every four-year-old until the end of 2019, with the state government funding the remaining 10 hours. In recent years, the federal government has extended the funding on a year-by-year basis, leaving families and kindergarten providers in limbo. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said the government needed to commit to recurrent kindergarten funding to provide certainty for Wyndham families. “It shouldn’t be used as a political promise or something to be used to get votes,” Cr Shaw said. “We know the benefits of kids going to kinder, and yet we seem to have this conversation every year. “In Wyndham alone, we have more than 3100 kids currently enrolled in kinder. “If the federal government does not fund their education on an ongoing basis then their

families could be stuck paying an extra $2000 out of their own pockets just to fill the gaps.” Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said that if elected at the federal election, the Labor Party would provide ongoing funding for four-year-old kindergarten and 15 hours of subsidised kindergarten a week for three-year-olds.
“By failing to secure funding for four-year-old kinder beyond the end of this year, Scott Morrison is leaving 5348 pre-schoolers in Lalor in the dark,” Ms Ryan said. The federal education department did not respond to Star Weekly’s questions by deadline.
Theft leaves club in despair Members of the Werribee Little Athletics Centre have been left devastated after thieves stole a Kubota utility vehicle, valued at $15,000, from their Hoppers Crossing headquarters. Club president Rob de Wit said the Kubota was stolen from a storage shed at the Hoppers Lane athletic track, either overnight or during the early hours of Saturday, February 2. He said members of the centre had fundraised to buy the Kubota, which was used to move equipment for organising sports events. Mr de Wit said the theft, which has been reported to police, would have a “significant impact” on the centre’s volunteers who would now have to spend more time setting up for events. “Now we have to get there earlier and leave later,” he said. “We are disappointed – it was a good piece of equipment.” Mr de Wit said that the loss of the Kubota had struck the centre particularly hard, as it was stolen almost two weeks before the western metropolitan region’s Track and Field Championships, which were held on the weekend of February 16 and 17. Mayoral Column It was great to meet with Attorney General and Member for Altona, Jill Hennessy MP last week and discuss some of the issues affecting residents in Point Cook. This meeting provided us with the opportunity to highlight some of the State Budget priorities for Council and for Jill to bring us up to speed on major projects already planned, such as the Point Cook Community Hospital. This is a project Jill is very passionate about and we look forward to working with her, and the community as planning gets underway. Traffic and transport issues continue to be an issue for Point Cook, specifically the Point Cook Rd, Sneydes Rd intersection and we discussed what needs to be done to continue to advocate for this project to be funded. We also discussed traffic issues around the new Saltwater P-9 College and we were able to provide an update on the traffic management study Council is conducting to assess the need for a second pedestrian crossing. It was fantastic to be able to discuss local issues affecting our community and I thank Jill for meeting with us. United club to kick on By Alesha Capone A Tarneit-based soccer club, previously known as Western United, will be affiliated with the area’s new A-League football club. The Western Melbourne Group, which scored one of two new Football Federation Australia expansion licences and will build a 15,000-seat stadium in Tarneit later this year, announced last week that its official club name would be Western United. That name has been used by another Tarneit football club, which formed in 1999. The older club has signalled it would change its name to Wyndham United Soccer Club. Club vice-president Trevor Bowen said that under a contract between the two clubs – which is still being worked out – Wyndham United was set to become “fully affiliated” with Western United. Mr Bowen said the deal would involve coaching support, and that Western United would cover the costs associated with his club changing its name. He said the A-League club would also provide Wyndham United with $5000 per year, to support refugees to play soccer. He said that Wyndham United had a “heavy focus” on helping refugees by subsidising the costs associated with playing. “We know there are a lot of very good players out there who can’t afford to play, who don’t get a chance,” Mr Bowen said. He said there were several Karen players at the club, and also players from African nations such as South Sudan and Kenya. Joel Musa has a South-Sudanese background and came to Australia at the age of 13 as a refugee from Uganda. He has played with Wyndham United for four seasons.

The 24-year-old said he enjoyed the community feeling and diversity of Wyndham United. He said after arriving in Australia, joining in with sport had helped him to develop his English skills. Mr Musa also said he enjoyed playing soccer
alongside other refugees at Wyndham United, who understood the struggles of adapting to life in a new country. “I think that’s why it’s a strong community and it’s important to help young people to develop skills, including life skills, on and off the pitch,” he said.

Farewell for Wyndham veteran By Alesha Capone

Eric Johnston, a long-time Wyndham resident and a former World War II prisoner-of-war, has died. Mr Johnston, who celebrated his 100th birthday in July last year, died last week (February 11). Mr Johnston served in Singapore during WWII with Australian Army, 8th Division, 6th Signals. After being captured by the Japanese, he was held as a prisoner of war in Changi and worked on the Thai-Burma railway. Upon returning to Australia, he was reunited
with his wife Vera, and the couple went on to have five children. Mr Johnston also worked as a forest commission officer across western Victoria. He moved to Werribee with Vera about 25 years ago. Mr Johnston was extensively involved with the community, including the Werribee RSL, Werribee Bowling Club and as a volunteer at the Victorian State Rose Garden. He was also a member of the Apollo Bay and Werribee Masonic lodges. Mr Johnston and Vera were married for 73 years. She died five years ago.
Later in his life, Mr Johnston became a resident of the Uniting AgeWell’s Manor Lakes Community, where he enjoyed singing, growing tomatoes and barracking for Collingwood. Mr Johnston leaves behind five children, 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. His funeral service will be held this afternoon (Wednesday, February 20) at St Thomas Anglican Church in Werribee. A booklet prepared for the service by Mr Johnston’s family, described him as “… a very generous and knowledgeable person … always keen to learn and to pass on old skills”.
Refugee driven to help Elleni Bereded-Samuel says that she is driven to make a difference in the lives of other people. Since arriving in Australia as a refugee from Ethiopia 23 years ago, Mrs Bereded-Samuel has thrown herself into community work. The Point Cook resident was made a member of the general division of the Order of Australia (AM) last month for her significant service to social welfare and to the African community of Melbourne. She is vice-president of the Australian-Africa Chamber of Commerce, a director of Western Health, a BreastScreen Victoria board member, a former director of the Royal Women’s Hospital and a former commissioner with the Victorian Multicultural Commission. She has worked at WestCASA, Victoria University and Catholic Care, and is diversity capability development manager at Australian Unity. In addition, Mrs Bereded-Samuel is the
founder of the Horn of Africa Communities Network, which helps migrants from many backgrounds with support, education, training and employment. “I didn’t do this all by myself – I had great help from my husband and, of course, my children,” she said. She said that former deputy magistrate Brian Burrow, VicHealth founder Rhonda Galbally, the late Joan Kirner and Australian Unity chief executive Kevin McCoy had also been great support. “I’m happy where I am,” Mrs Bereded-Samuel said. “I think it’s important to do your best, whether you are a cleaner, doctor or another professional practitioner – go out and help people.” Alesha Capone

MY WYNDHAM Carradin Blyth is a lifelong Werribee resident who last year took on the mantle of chairperson of the Wyndham Relay for Life fundraiser. He sat down with Charlene Macaulay to talk about his childhood, relay and what he would do if he was mayor. I’ve lived in the area since 1977, when I was born at the old Werribee Hospital. Bruce Downing delivered me, as he did with a lot of locals! My nan used to say if you’re not born in Werribee, then you’re not a true local. My family has got a lot of history here because my great-grandparents were market gardeners down at Werribee South. What are your childhood memories of Werribee? The biggest childhood memory is that Werribee was more of a country town. I could ride my bike to school and then we’d ride it down the river or to the pool, you’d stop at Captain Chook on the way home and get your hot chips and by the time you got home your parents would always know where you’d been and where you’d stopped and what you had done. You could pretty much walk down the main street and if people weren’t relatives, then they were a family friend. Now you can walk down the main street of Werribee and not know anybody, which is not bad either! What kept you here as an adult? It was a place that I wanted to bring my kids up in. It still has that country town feel to it. Having all the attractions that we’ve got, there’s so much for the kids to do. How did you meet your wife Belinda? My wife is from Montmorency, and she didn’t
even know where Werribee was when we first met. We met at a mate’s 21st birthday out in Eltham, and she invited me to her 21st birthday the next weekend and I went along, to her surprise, and we’ve been together ever since. We’ve got Lily, who’s 15, and Jade, who’s 21. You’re chairperson of Wyndham Relay for Life, why did you take on the role? I suppose it was the committee who approached me. I was really blown away because I’d only been on the committee for two years. We’ve all got our own personal reasons to relay, but I just wanted to do that little bit more. What’s your favourite Wyndham location for a meal? Our favourite at the moment is Shadowfax. We ride our bikes along the river and follow the trail and then we go out near the K Road cliffs and cut across to Shadowfax and we generally have a nice pizza outside and a glass of wine doesn’t go astray! If you could change something about the area, what would it be? If I became mayor, I would transform Station Place and have that as it is with the pop-up park with no cars and have all the retail shops in there as cafes and restaurants. I’d bring the old cinema back, and really have that as a happening place – similar to Yarraville, how they’ve got the Sun Theatre and the street blocked off and the wine bar across the road and the bookstore next door and all the cafes.

SPORT Cats bats’ big challenge By Lance Jenkinson Two routes – one more palatable than the other – are available for Hoppers Crossing in the penultimate weekend of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west group regular season. The Cats can all but lock away a finals berth with a successful run chase on home soil against Oakleigh on Saturday. By contrast, a loss will leave the side’s fate to the last round of the season, when it will have to travel to top-of-the-table Caulfield for a one-day game. Cats player-coach Greg Kennedy undoubtedly prefers the first scenario. “If we don’t get the win, we’re going to be in a game against the top side that we would have to win,” he said. “So it’s a much better idea to win this game and turn up to the last game feeling comfortable we’ll be playing in the finals. “It would also be huge to knock off Oakleigh, a team above us on the ladder – not just for the ladder, but for our own belief in our ability.” Nailing a win against Oakleigh will be a challenge. The Cats have been set a massive target after the Oaks posted an imposing 8-279 off 80 overs. Even with their backs against the wall, the Cats will go into the chase optimistically. They made 296 in round one against Taylors Lakes and 281 in round six against Brighton. “We know we’re good enough to chase down this sort of total,” Kennedy said. Oakleigh top order batsmen Brendan McGuinness (94) and former Victorian state representative Graeme Vimpani (54) made life difficult for Hoppers Crossing on the first day. At one stage, the Oaks appeared headed for a score in excess of 300, but the Cats bowlers did well to reel them in. Kennedy (2-35) and Brett Smith (2-44) took vital wickets late in the day. Hoppers Crossing spinner Mitch Ellis deserves plaudits for his tireless work in containing a dangerous Oakleigh line-up. Ellis finished with 4-103 off 31 overs, including eight maidens and the scalp of Vimpani. “Mitch bowled all of his overs in a row,” Kennedy said. “He came on after Brett’s first spell and didn’t finish until Brett bowled his second spell the last five overs down his end. “He was just a workhorse … he bowled really well.”
■ You know your suburb has arrived when you are mentioned almost daily in traffic accident reports and you get your own football team. Welcome the Truganina Thunder to the WRFL – and it is pronounced Trug-a-nine-a. The club will field teams in the junior competition in the under-8, 9, and 10 boys and under-10 girls based out of the ground at Mainview Boulevard. The club has been born out of the Auskick program, which is the natural progression needed for sustainable growth. In the past, clubs have fast-tracked senior teams and paid – and in some cases, continue to pay – the price. The Thunder is the 35th club to compete in the WRFL. I wish it the best for the future. ■ AFLX confuses me – not because of comic book team names, unique rules and playing conditions or the game-changer player role. I am confused because I can’t work out why it exists. If fans need a footy fix they have AFLW to watch. There are practice matches in the next few weeks if fans want to see the men going around and most clubs have open training sessions and match simulation to watch, as well. So what void does AFLX fill? I agree it takes both potential publicity and funding away from the women’s competition. I doubt any players will be reflecting on their AFLX premiership medal and tattoo in a decade. ■ There was another successful meeting for local track athletes at the Keilor Gift last weekend, with Jarod Sutton winning the 400-metre novice event and Nathan Burfitt saluting in the 1600-metre front-marker handicap. Megan McMahon and Jody Richards have been outstanding performers on the circuit over summer, giving veteran coach Terry McGarity plenty to smile about. All four have local football connections through umpiring and clubs and Nathan has been senior team manager at Deer Park for a number of years.

It’s been more than a month since Werribee Centrals last tasted success in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2. The recent flat patch has not hindered the Centurions’ chances of figuring in this season’s finals though. The Centurions will go into their final round two-day game against Kingsville at Skinner Reserve with their destiny in their own hands. If the third-placed Centurions can win, they will feature in the finals. If they lose, they will need other results to go their way. Should it qualify, Werribee Centrals will be eager to head into the finals on a winning note. Only one win since the Christmas break is not the kind of form you want heading into a cut-throat semi-final. Werribee Centrals were disappointing with the bat in a 35-run loss to Williamstown CYMS at Fearon Reserve last start. The Centurions were bowled out for 105 in 44.2 overs. Rishan Kavinga (32) and Waqar Shah (20) were the only real resistance to CYs bowling. The bowlers made life hard for the CYs
batsmen, but the defence of such a small total left them in an unfavourable position. In division 3, Seabrook’s hopes of a rare win were shattered after it was bowled out for 142 in its chase for Williamstown Imperials’ 156. Walgama Eranga put his side into a position of strength with 85 but he received little assistance as the Saints lost all 10 wickets for just 71 after starting the chase on 0-71. Point Cook’s game of musical chairs with Sunshine at the top of the division 3 ladder continued, but this time the music stopped and the Warriors found themselves back down into second place, four points behind. The Warriors score of 165 was not enough against in-form Sunshine Heights, who passed the target eight down. In division 4, Wyndham Vale cruised to a first innings victory over St Andrews, but could not obtain a much-desired outright result. In division 5, Bellbridge was skittled for 111 in its search for Footscray ANA’s 9-218.
■ Any cricket team going into the last fortnight of the regular season with a slim chance of finals action needs only look to Sri Lanka’s Test win over South Africa last week for inspiration. Yarraville Club Cricket Club’s first XI heads in to its last VTCA Turner Shield game of the year against Strathmore knowing not even that kind of resilience will help it. It will miss finals after losing to Sunshine United.

If Werribee was looking for a test in the lead-up to the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west group finals, Moorabbin has granted its wish. The second-placed Tigers could be in for a real battle on day two against a determined and in-form Moorabbin side that has nothing more than pride to play for. After posting 226 with the bat, Werribee’s bowlers will need to be at their best to secure the victory. Tigers captain Tim O’Brien welcomes the challenge. “It could be a positive, only making 226, because it’s going to really make our bowlers work,” O’Brien said. “If we want to be a top two side, we’ve got to be able to defend
totals like this one. It’s going to be a good challenge.” Werribee finished its innings a little short of its desired total. The Tigers were ruing their inability to bat out their 80 overs, leaving in excess of seven overs on the table. Had they batted the extra time, O’Brien believes the Tigers could have posted above 250 and just about taken the game away from Moorabbin. Now it’s definitely game on. “We lost our last three wickets pretty quick and still had another six or seven overs to bat,” O’Brien said. In Werribee’s top order, O’Brien top-scored with 44 and Matt Dean added 42, with Adam
Alifraco (25) and Jonathan Burton (21) making handy contributions. The key to building a competitive score late in the day was James Freeman. The side’s form all-rounder scored 43 not out to follow 58 and 44 in his past two digs, while he’s also been delivering some quality bowling. If Freeman had not run out of batting partners against Moorabbin, he could have really taken the opposition bowlers to the cleaners late in the day. “It would’ve been good if the last couple could’ve hung around,” O’Brien said. “He could’ve really done some damage. Bees start with sizzle By Lance Jenkinson Werribee City wasted no time stamping its authority over Geelong in a season opening 4-0 win in the National Premier League 2 west clash at Galvin Park on Saturday. A well-taken goal from new recruit Alec Goodwin just 72 seconds into the contest set the tone for the Bees, who kick-started their new campaign with a flurry of goals and a clean sheet. Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini was relieved to get a first-up win, having failed to pick up three points in any of his previous season openers with the club. “It was our total focus for the whole pre-season – that first game,” he said. “We didn’t talk about seasons, we didn’t talk about anything else – we just talked about winning that first game and that’s what we did.” Goodwin could not have envisaged a better start to life at Werribee City. The former Moreland Zebras striker ducked in behind the Geelong defence to latch on to a long ball and powered home low and hard from a tight angle. It was just one of a number of positive acts Goodwin produced for his new team. “It was great to see that he scored the first goal and then he set up another one,” Sabbadini said. “He was involved with the build-ups with all the goals. 44 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 20, 2019

“He just worked so hard – he was left and right, he was holding the ball up for us … he was best on ground by far.” Jake Butler was influential in the midfield for Werribee City.
His tireless work was rewarded with two goals – one in which he caressed the ball past an outstretched goalkeeper from a cross to double the Bees lead and another from the penalty spot to make it four for the team. In between Butler’s goals, midfielder Dion Paola got in on the scoring act, following up his initial parried shot to tap past the goalkeeper. It was a dream start for Werribee City as it executed in all facets of play. “Defensively we were solid, our midfield was in the right spots and the strikers worked really hard – Alec and the two wingers, Lisandro [Paz] and Liam Brian,” Sabbadini said. “It was a really good, all-round performance.” Julyan Collett was another new recruit who impressed. Takanori Nishiyoto, who had a limited pre-season, came on as a substitute and showed some promising signs. Brad Murray had the captain’s armband and displayed the leadership expected of him when appointed to the position. Murray led by example with his actions on the field. “He’s always right in the heart of the park, always involved in either defending or attacking,” Sabbadini said. “He’s one of your prime movers.” Werribee City will hit the road to play Brunswick City in the second round at Dunstan Reserve on Saturday afternoon.
Ready-made ruckman Angus Clarke is looking to hit the ground running with Werribee in the Victorian Football League this season. The Norwood premiership player is a mature-aged big man who might not have yet reached his peak. Werribee football operations manager Stuart Balloch is excited by Clarke’s potential – even at the age of 29. “We’ve seen in recent years in the AFL that there’s still scope for development in the more mature big men,” Balloch said. “We’re delighted to have ‘Gus’ on board to bring that state-league premiership experience and drive some healthy competition among our ruck stocks.” Clarke was recruited from Old Melburnians in the Victorian Amateur Football Association, where he has played the past three seasons. He rose to prominence in Adelaide where he played 22 senior SANFL games for Norwood, including the 2012 grand final win over West Adelaide. Clarke is thrilled to have arrived at Werribee, where he is enjoying the perks of state league football again. “It’s an outstanding facility here, so I’m pretty excited to be a part of it and test myself in the VFL,” Clarke said. “[Werribee coach] Mark [Williams] is always keeping you guessing.” Werribee has also brought in Essendon VFL midfielder Alex Marklew. The 26-year-old has played three seasons with the Bombers VFL side, managing seven games. During that time, Marklew also played with Doutta Stars and with his hometown Wangaratta Rovers. Marklew will add further depth to Werribee’s midfield brigade. He is described as a hard running utility, so he will offer another option for Williams. A variety of reasons led to Marklew crossing to Werribee. “The new coach, the new facilities, the fact there are a lot of country guys from up my way and that I knew [forward coach] Nick Daffy and got on well with him, it all played a role,” he said. “The pre-season has been full-on, but we’ve now got the match stuff to look forward to, so I can’t wait.” Just like Clarke, Balloch sees Marklew as a player who can make a sudden impact, having already been involved in the VFL system at Essendon. “Alex was in the top couple of guys across our pre-season running tests, so his endurance is a real strength,” Balloch said. Werribee recruits head for Big V action from Finland Werribee Devils have unveiled their two imports for the 2019 Big V women’s championship season. The Devils have brought in rebounding machine Alisia Jenkins and former US college star Alexyz Vaioletama in a double swoop on players currently playing in Finland. Jenkins has been a powerhouse on the boards in Finland, averaging 15 rebounds a game, the second highest in the league. It was a continuation of her form in college. She was a standout for the University of Southern Florida, averaging a double-double in her final two years. Jenkins, 24, has also played professionally in Spain. “I’ve been very lucky to play basketball in a number of different countries and I’m excited to add Australia to that list,” Jenkins said. “I hope plenty of Werribee locals come and check out the team this year.”

“She is a supreme athlete who will make great contributions to our team on both the offensive and defensive end of the floor. “Alisia’s rebounding, speed and strength will prove to be a nightmare for opposition teams to stop. “I know our basketball community is going to love the way Alisia plays.” Vaioletama is also a well-travelled basketballer. The forward has played professionally in South Korea, Puerto Rico and Finland following a stellar college career with the University of Southern California. Vaioletama also played in junior USA national teams. She, too, is excited to add Australia to her list. “I’m looking forward to coming down to Australia and getting to know my teammates at Werribee,” she said. “I know Australians
love basketball and the games will be super competitive. I think my game will suit the style of play in the Big V league and I’m looking forward to the challenge.” Potter reckons Vaioletama will add leadership to the team, along with key on-court attributes. “Alexyz is a true professional and will add much-needed scoring, rebounding, defence and overall leadership to our team as we move into the Big V championship division this year,” Potter said. “I am greatly looking forward to working with Alexyz as we push to build an extremely competitive team this year. “And, more importantly over time, build a strong pathway for female athletes in Melbourne’s west to play at an elite level.” Lance Jenkinson

Big leap for martial star By Lance Jenkinson Making his entrance into taekwondo at age four, Cameron Moyes has spent more than a decade on the mat – but he will look back on 2018 as his break-out year. The 15-year-old from Hall’s Taekwondo jetted to three overseas destinations for major tournaments and reeled in a swag of medals. “It was a very big year, my biggest year yet,” Moyes said. “Last year, I was at the top of the cadet division, which is an age group between 12 and 14, and I was 14. “That gave me some confidence going across the world. I knew it was going to be the best opportunity before I lead into the juniors division [age 15 to 17].” Moyes relished not just the thrill of success, but also the chance to travel and meet new people. “I love the travel,” he said. “Going to different countries for tournaments and meeting a lot of people is a great experience. It’s great to get out and see new things and look at how other
countries do it to improve my learning. It’s just an overall amazing experience.” Moyes was a serious competitor in all the events that he entered. Facing the world’s best, the Hoppers Crossing martial artist came fifth at the World Poomsae Championships in Taipei. A tricky draw did not help Moyes, but the experience of facing the world’s best was unforgettable. “I fought the actual winner of the world championships in the first round, so that was pretty tough,” he said. “It was pretty unlucky to get him, but still it was a great experience.” Moyes had great success at regional events. His time in Tahiti at the Oceania Championships and the President’s Cup yielded a medal haul in individuals, pairs and teams events. The Westbourne Grammar School year 10 student reaped three gold in poomsae and a silver medal in sparring at the President’s Cup, then three gold medals in poomsae and a bronze medal in sparring. Moyes also claimed a bronze medal at the European championships in Spain in poomsae.
It was a remarkable effort considering he was battling jet lag and had limited sleep. Moyes, who got his start at City West Taekwondo, is ready to make his transition into the juniors division this year. He is targeting strong performances at the President’s Cup and Australian Open – both events will take place on the Gold Coast. “Hopefully, I can learn as much as I can so when I’m 16, 17, at the top of the age group, it can be a big year for me again,” Moyes said. He trains four days a week with coaches Jihun An and Jerry Moraitis at Hall’s Taekwondo and puts in extra sessions at home. Moyes is the February nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Moyes will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist him in achieving his sports goals.
Werribee Devils have sealed a deal that will see star import Konor Kulas return for a second season in the Big V basketball men’s state championship. A forward who can stretch the floor, Kulas took the league by storm last season, scooping Big V All Star 5 honours after averaging 24.2 points and 11.1 rebounds a game. Kulas was a key player for the Devils because of his competitiveness under the basket and quality at the perimeter. The leading scorer in the league was tough to contain for opposition defenders because of his flexibility on the court. Kulas is excited to be back at Werribee. “I hope we can use the momentum we created last season to have a serious crack in 2019,” he said. “It feels like unfinished business for me.” Warren Estcourt, the Devils men’s championship coach, said it was a no brainer inviting Kulas back. “Konor was the backbone of our team in 2018 and re-signing him for season 2019 was our main priority,” Estcourt said. “He is the consummate professional, both on and off the court, and I am looking forward to welcoming him back and watching his continued development.” Earlier in the week, Werribee announced the signing of the first of its two imports, American David Shepard. Shepard is a six-foot-seven power forward who has played professionally in Argentina and will bring a presence. “David’s skill set will make him one of the best imports in the league in 2019 and I am confident he will be a wonderful addition for the club,” Escourt said.
