Dance duo steps it up Emmasyn and Sienna are on a high after their national championship win. The girls, both 11, returned with gold in the jazz and contemporary sections of the Showcase Australia Dance Championships on the Gold Coast last month. The competition attracts dancers and troupes from all over Australia and New Zealand vying for a national title in jazz, tap, contemporary, hip-hop, ballet, acrobatics and musical theatre. Emmasyn, from Hoppers Crossing, and Melton’s Sienna have been dancing since they were three and teamed up this year for their first performances as a duo. The girls, who dance with Galactic Dance and Events, came away with the overall duo/trio highest score for the Australasian competition. Emmasyn’s mother Ainsley Foust said she was “exceptionally proud” of the girls. “I’m blown away with how well they did,” Ms Foust said. “It’s their first time performing as a duo and they spent their holidays practising. “Individually they both ranked in the top-20 in Australasia in their age group.” SIENNA AND EMMASYN

New plan for CBD parking By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council will increase parking time limits for on-street car parking spaces, scrap business parking permits and introduce paid parking for long-term parkers under a new draft strategy. Operating under a “customer comes first” mentality, the Werribee City Centre Parking Strategy proposes abolishing business parking permits in favour of paid parking within nominated “premium sites” for stays over three hours. Under this plan, drivers can park for free for three hours, then are required to pay for parking at the Cherry Street, Gateway (corner Synnot Street and Duncans Road), West End (Watton Street), Riverbend Large (Comben Drive) and
Wyndham Cultural Centre perimeter off-street carparks. No fee schedule has been determined, but according to a council report the fee would only be “minimal”. All on-street parking will remain free, including all-day parking on “city fringe” streets. The draft strategy also proposes: • Changing the time limit of on-street parking in Werribee’s CBD from one hour to two hours; • Reducing Station Place parking from one hour to 30 minutes, introducing a drop-off zone and relocating the taxi rank to Comben Drive; and • Implementing digital signage to direct drivers to parking spaces; Wyndham council city economy, innovation and liveability acting director Peter McKinnon
said the draft plan aimed to improve parking and access to Werribee’s city centre. He said the draft strategy was written up in consultation with the Werribee Business and Traders Association and the Werribee Landowners Association and focused on discouraging traders and employees from parking on the street in front of their businesses to open up prime spots for customers. “We’re looking for a system which is equal for both visitors and traders alike,” Mr McKinnon said. Another key focus of the draft strategy is to ramp up parking enforcement, however, the council says there are no plans to employ more parking officers. The council has been working on a draft car parking strategy for Werribee’s CBD since 2015.
No timeline has been set for when the final strategy will go before the council, or when any proposals can expect to be implemented. Werribee’s city centre is expected to include more public parking over the next five years, with 467 spaces through the council’s catalyst developments and 200 additional commuter spaces at Werribee train station as proposed by the state government. There will also be 904 new private spaces for new businesses and residents. The draft strategy will be out for public consultation until March 6. Wyndham council will hold a community information session on February 23 between 11am-1pm at the Station Place pop-up park. A survey is also online at www.theloop. wyndham.vic.gov.au/werribee-parking

Police lament party mayhem By Alesha Capone Call-outs to “rowdy” parties at short-term accommodation properties are a weekly occurence in Wyndham, according to police. Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches said it was “all too easy” for a young person to post a party’s venue on social media, inviting “anyone and everyone”. He said police are concerned that parents and guardians are taking youngsters to parties without asking questions about the events. Police responded to several triple-0 calls in
relation to one “party” on January 16. Officers arrived at a short-stay rental house in Tarneit about 5am to find about 200 teenagers, many of whom were intoxicated. Senior Sergeant Riches said there were no “responsible adults” present at the house, which had been rented out by 17-year-olds. “The place was completely trashed and it was disgusting – there were holes in the walls and tables upturned,” Senior Sergeant Riches said. “We’re finding these things are happening
weekly in our area – they are generally happening each week and each weekend.” “As police, if we don’t get on to it quite early and shut it down, we can get up to 200 kids on the site.” Senior Sergeant Riches said that officers spent a significant amount of time trying to make sure each youth could get home safely after shutting down parties. “Some kids wander off and they don’t want to talk to police,” he said. “It takes hours to make sure all these kids are safe, which ties up police resources.”
He said that many of the party goers who wandered off would be intoxicated, putting them at a greater risk of falling victim to crimes or injuring themselves. He called on parents to ask for details about where their children were going. “Often parents are dropping off a carload of five kids somewhere between 9pm and 1am and there are no questions being asked,” he said. “You’ve got to know where the kids are, who they’re with and if there are going to be adults present.”

I spyder a Porsche replica Mr O’Brien said he and Mr Tanti decided to build the replica by hand, the same way the Porsche Spyder German manufacturer would have during the 1950s. “I think for me, what I have enjoyed is doing it by hand – I think we can rely too much on technology support for all things, these days,” he said. “For me, it has been therapeutic to build it slowly – there has been no boss hurrying me along and no end deadline I have to hurry to meet.”

When Mr Tanti moved to Sydney the pair decided to keep the project going, and moved the tooling aid to Mr O’Brien’s Truganina garage. In about a month’s time, the tooling aid will be shipped to Sydney, where Mr Tanti will use it to fashion several duplications of the Porsche Spyder. Mark O’Brien is helping to build a replica 1955 Porsche Spyder, the old-fashioned way. Mr O’Brien, a freelance patternmaker engineer and automotive designer, and his project partner Brian Tanti began work on the labour of love in 2012. At the time, Mr Tanti, a coach builder who was working at the Fox Car Museum in Melbourne, asked Mr O’Brien to build him a full-size “tooling aid” for a Porsche replica. The tooling aid, allows metal to be rolled and bent for a vehicle’s body.
A 17-year-old graffiti vandal has been made to clean up his act. The Werribee teen was last month charged with a criminal offence for his tagging and ordered by a court to pay an undisclosed sum in compensation for the vandalism. Wyndham safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said the council was determined to remove illegal graffiti as quickly as possible “to keep our city looking neat and tidy and also to discourage other vandals from adding their tags”. Cr McAliney said that while the prosecution of graffiti perpetrators was important, education was the key to prevention. In the past 18 months, more than 1000 students across 17 Wyndham schools have participated in an early intervention program aimed at deterring young people from tagging. Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said while the program had been offered to students across a range of year levels in both primary and high schools, “year 8 students are most responsive to the program, and are at a great age to be influenced to reduce risks of offending”. Mr Thorpe said the council had received 3739 reports of graffiti in 2018, down from 4243 in 2017. am not sure the people of Wyndham have fully grasped the enormity of our city becoming the home of an A-League franchise. In the world game landscape, the A-League is not a major player, yet it is an emerging entity. Talent scouts from all over the world are signing up teenage players such as Daniel Arzani and Seb Pasquali. EPL club Tottenham has sent one of its rising stars, 21-year-old Shayon Harrison, to Melbourne City to fast track his development, while the new western suburbs club has announced its first player, former Greek international Panagiotis Kone. The eyes of the world are coming to Wyndham and we have a big roles to play. The first is to be part of the naming of the team and the choosing of it its colours. It’s a huge task. Look what happened with Melbourne Heart. The fallout from that is still being cleaned up by Melbourne City’s operators. The voting is being run online and the club has floated four options, with the fifth being
an open invitation for any name. The colour options are black, red, green or white. Think about Man United, Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea – their nicknames and colours are ingrained in our minds like Collingwood or Carlton. That is what the new franchise is looking to create. While the public opinion will be a factor, it would be naive to think that the financial backers and stakeholders won’t have their two million bobs’ worth of say. Our council has gifted the land to the franchise and I am sure it will be hovering nearby and supplying some creative input. Once the decision is made, our next job will be to get behind the new entity, whatever it is named. Soccer fans can be a club’s best and worst asset, as we have seen on too many occasions in the history of the game. We have the chance to set the agenda and help create the culture of this new club. Let’s model it on the good things about the west – loyalty, respect, determination and humility. â– â–

Wyndham council endorsed its 2019-22 Accessibility Action Plan during a meeting last week. Mayor Mia Shaw said the plan outlined the council’s priorities to improve access and inclusion of people with disability. Cr Shaw said the plan included working with local businesses; improving the Certificate opportunity accessibility to council’s website for vision and hearing-impaired residents and supporting the roll-out of the NDIS.
Learning curve
Wyndham council has launched its Learning Community Strategy 2018-23. The plan includes positioning Wyndham’s Learning Festival as the municipality’s signature learning event and for the council to host an annual education roundtable. Wyndham’s learning city portfolio holder, Cr Josh Gilligan, said the strategy outlined a Controlled burns to ensuring learning strong commitment is available to all residents.
Disease grant
The federal government has given Wyndham council a $112,000 grant to help prevent and reduce the impact of chronic disease, and increase the overall physical and mental health of older Australians. The council will use the grant to deliver a project that supports Wyndham’s senior citizens to become more active. Young couple appeal for help By Alesha Capone Johnny Canik was driving on the Western Ring Road, on the way to visit his fiancee and her parents, when he was involved in a devastating crash last month. The collision left the Truganina man with eight broken ribs, a broken sternum, collarbone and back injuries, a sprained wrist and whiplash. Mr Canik said he was driving along the Ring Road on January 21, when the truck in front of him braked suddenly, forcing him to brake as well.

The semi-trailer driving behind Mr Canik did not stop, pushing his car into the truck in front. Mr Canik’s head hit the steering wheel and his windscreen smashed upon impact. He remembers that police who arrived on the scene were reluctant to move him for fear of making his injuries worse. He was trapped in the car for about 25 minutes before paramedics arrived. “I was then taken to the Royal Melbourne, I spent hours in a neck brace and had scans done – I had to just look at the ceiling for hours, it was horrible,” Mr Canik said. Although he is now back at home, doctors have ordered Mr Canik to take at least six weeks off work to recover. He said he has constant pain in his shoulders and neck, and cannot yet lift his arms above chest height.

For the usually-active 28-year-old, who works seven days a week as a sign-writer and DJ, a lack of mobility is “driving him crazy”. Mr Canik said the incident had also impacted him and fiancee Mikaela in other
ways. “Our house is getting built and we are getting married in June, so it all hit at once,” he said. To help out, Mikaela has started a

Parents have expressed anger at “ludicrous” changes to a bus pick-up service for pupils with special needs who attend Warringa Park School, which has campuses in Hoppers Crossing and Werribee South. Mother Naomi Reiber said parents were not consulted about the changes, which they were informed about by letter a few days before the school term began. Mrs Reiber said that up until last year, the bus would usually pick up pupils from their homes or close by. But under changes implemented by the Department of Education and Training, families now had to take children to designated pick-up points, some up to two kilometres from their houses. Mrs Reiber said some parents – including herself – did not own cars. She said other parents had children with physical disabilities, while some youngsters had autism and found it difficult to stand for long periods while waiting for a bus. “It just seems ludicrous – they have forced the burden on to carers and parents, who already face service cuts in other areas,” she said. A department spokesperson said the bus pick-up changes were introduced so “Warringa Park School students can spend less time on buses and more time in class learning vital life and academic skills”. “Under previous arrangements, students caught a bus to the school’s main campus in Hoppers Crossing and were then transported on shuttle bus services to their assigned campus, often resulting in students missing important classroom time,” the spokesperson said. The bus now takes students directly to their assigned campus.

Staff and children at The Manor Kindergarten in Werribee have built and decorated a tiny library out the front of its building, and have encouraged the community to take or leave books for others to enjoy. The street library works on an honour system, whereby people can grab a book that interests them and either return it when they’re done or replace it with another book. Kindergarten assistant Michelle Warman said the street library was a way for the kindergarten to strengthen its connection with the community and had already received a fantastic response from locals. “It’s actually quite nice to see families using it,” she said. Wyndham council learning city portfolio holder Josh Gilligan said the street library was a great way of encouraging people to pick up a book and read. “Street libraries are an invitation for people to share the joys of reading with their neighbours,” Cr Gilligan said. Investors snapping up the west By Charlene Macaulay Cheaper prices and higher rental yields are attracting property investors out west. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the proportion of renters in Wyndham has increased from 25.2 per cent in 2011 to 28.6 per cent in 2016. In comparison, the proportion of renters across the state increased by 2.2 percentage points over the same period. More than a quarter of Wyndham properties (28.6 per cent) are now rented out. The majority
of Wyndham properties (48.4 per cent) are owned by people still paying off their mortgage, and 20 per cent of Wyndham properties are owned outright. REIV chief executive Gil King said lifestyle choices, low wages growth and availability of quality properties made Wyndham popular among renters, prompting rental demand. “Investors are increasingly looking to outer suburbs such as those in Wyndham for a range of reasons,” he said. “These include the more affordable options they offer compared with middle and inner
areas, the growth in median house prices – and therefore their investments – in these suburbs or because they want investment properties closer to their own place of residence.” Tony Bevacqua, co-founder of construction company 360 Built, said there had been a gradual shift towards investors favouring properties between 20-30 kilometres out of the city. “What we are finding is that punters with a budget of around $500,000 are opting for new homes, in suburbs such as Williams Landing, which boast three bedrooms, two bathrooms

Mr Tofaili said Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Wyndham Vale were investment hot spots.
Park pops up again The popular Point Cook Pop Up Park is back – and it has something for everyone. Events at the Murnong Street park will include gardening education sessions, movies, live music, swing dancing, children’s craft, a rock painting workshop and a teddy bear picnic. The first Point Cook Pop Up Park was held last year between February 25 and April 15. Afterwards, organisers teamed up with the Point Cook Action Group to apply for a grant from the state government’s Pick My Project program in a bid for funding to hold the event again this year. The bid was successful and as a result, the park is back until April 29. Park joint project leads Susan McIntyre and Sara Mitchell said they had collaborated with community hubs, Wyndham council’s City Activation Team and Stockland to bring the park to life.
Volunteers, local businesses and community groups helped to set up the park earlier this month. Ms McIntyre said that the park was aimed at connecting residents and groups and boosting the local economy. “The whole thing is meant to be harmonious, friendly and welcoming,” she said. Schools, transport top wish list By Charlene Macaulay Seven new schools, planning and construction for three new Regional Rail Link (RRL) train stations and a raft of community safety measures have topped Wyndham council’s 2019-20 state budget wish list. The council’s pre-budget submission has called for: • Building five primary schools across the city, and secondary schools for Truganina and Tarneit; • Fast-tracking construction of the Sayers
Road RRL station to capitalise on the council’s successful bid for an A-League team in Tarneit, and planning for proposed new stations at Black Forest Road and Davis Road; • Bringing forward the Hoppers Crossing level crossing removal to coincide with the Cherry Street and Werribee Street crossing removals; • Upgrading several dangerous and congested road intersections, including the Point Cook Road and Sneydes Road intersection in Point Cook and the Duncans and Edwards roads intersection in Werribee; • More train services on the Werribee line and
another station on the western section of the government’s proposed Suburban Rail Loop; • Funding to establish the Wyndham Justice Precinct, including a new multi-jurisdictional court, new police complex and support services; • A family violence support and safety hub in Tarneit in line with recommendations of the Royal Commission into Family Violence; and • Delivery of the East Werribee Employment Precinct and associated Australian education city. The council has also called on the
government to pour at least $50 million into its growing suburbs fund for the upcoming financial year, which will go towards infrastructure projects across Victoria’s growth areas. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said the budget wish list, which had been guided by feedback from community leaders and organisations, called for Wyndham’s fair share of funding as one of the fastest growing municipalities in Australia. “It’s time to deliver real solutions for ongoing problems,” she said.
College wheels out skills program A program that repairs old bicycles for families in need will be expanded at Point Cook College this year. The school’s year 9 students last year were taught how to repair and refurbish the donated bicycles as part of the Full Cycle program. The bicycles were then passed on to the Point Cook Lions Club to give to families doing it tough. Teacher Dominik Zylka said students fixed up 15 donated bikes in 2018. Year 5, 6, 7 and 8 students will join the porgram in the coming year. “It’s been a real hit,” Mr Zylka said. “It’s a feeder into senior trades. “We’re building employability skills that can transfer into a part-time gig or getting into trades into senior years.”

Land sited for childcare A site has been acquired to build a proposed $6.6 million early learning centre in Windermere, an estate being built in Mambourin. The estate, being developed by Country Garden Australia, will consist of about 4700 homes. The land for the proposed centre, which is set to have the capacity for 134 children, will be on the corner of Callaway Street and Ingalls Road. A proposal for the centre is being prepared to be lodged with the Department of Education and Training Victoria. Named Colours Early Learning, the centre will join two public primary schools, one public secondary school and a private combined primary and secondary school, which already feature in Windermere’s master plan. The early learning centre will be run by independent operator VIC and NSW Childcare Propriety Ltd, which plans to open the centre in two years. The proposed centre will operate from 6.30am until 6.30pm weekdays. VIC and NSW Childcare co-founder Tim Tasci said: “With all things being equal, we plan to open for enrollments late 2020 and commence operations in 2021.” “Having operated several other early learning centre brands in the past, I am very familiar with the standard curriculum mandated by government that we must deliver, but we plan to differentiate Colours Early Learning by having a strong focus on culture too,” he said. “By ‘culture’, we mean art and music, with a dedicated space being provided for this, as well as offering the teaching of different languages, that will be consistent with Windermere’s buyer demographic. “We are assuming our diploma-certified

educators will come from the local community, and possibly even live within Windermere. “And we are cognisant that Windermere will be a colourful community with residents of all

Work on a new $13.2 million community centre in Wyndham Vale is on track for completion by mid-2019. Construction on the Wyndham Aboriginal Community Centre and Integrated Family Centre, along Wollahra Rise, is at lock-up stage, with internal plastering and construction of the carpark next on the to-do list. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said that once complete, the community centre would include three kindergarten rooms and a playground, five consulting rooms for maternal and child health and other services, and two community activity rooms for larger functions. She said the centre would have activity rooms, an arts and craft room, a meeting room, men’s and women’s cultural spaces and a dedicated outdoor ceremonial space for the indigenous community. “It will provide a place for people who live in this neighbourhood to meet each other and connect,” she said. “It will also be unique, as it will provide a dedicated space for Aboriginal people to strengthen connections to culture, community and country.” Located on Wollahra Rise, the centre will be located next to a planned prep-to-12 school. The concept arose from a Wyndham Aboriginal Forum held in 2013 that identified the need for an indigenous community centre in Wyndham.

Selfless work honoured Mehak Sheikh says her parents, religious beliefs and a desire to maintain her place of belonging have all contributed to her desire to help others. The Tarneit resident is a prolific volunteer, involved with many organisations including headspace Werribee, Wyndham council’s Youth Council Committee, the Welcome Dinner Project and the DiverCities Network (Australasia). Ms Sheikh, 22, also runs her own social enterprise, U-Learn, which offers free and low-cost workshops to people who are going through life transitions such as starting high school or a new job. On average, she spends three days a week lending her time to not-for-profit causes and social enterprises. This has led to Ms Sheikh, 22, being
nominated for the Saward Dawson Community Service and Social Impact Award at this year’s Seven News Young Achiever Awards. Ms Sheikh said when she was growing up and living in Kenya, her parents would drive to a children’s orphanage with crates of milk and bread. “They didn’t just talk about it, they walked the walk,” she said. Ms Sheikh said her religion also inspired her to do community work. “As a practicing Muslim, my understanding of the core of Islam is humanity, even before spirituality, and it just feels so right,” she said. Chance to help care for carers By Charlene Macaulay Life hasn’t been the same since Point Cook’s Sara and Will Ainsley became foster carers 18 months ago – and they wouldn’t have it any other way. The pair, who offer a mix of short, long-term and emergency care, signed on after they visited a school while on holiday in Fiji. “There were all these children with big smiles on their faces, and they literally had nothing,” Mrs Ainsley said. “I [realised] I really wanted to do something other than working nine to five.” Mrs Ainsley has since stopped work to care for children in need, and among their charges are two siblings that have been in their care for the past year. Despite the pleasure of giving kids a warm, loving home, Mrs Ainsley said the reality of being a foster carer can be tough. “We often get forgotten – we’re the last ones to know about decisions for the children, everything’s last minute.” Mrs Ainsley is one of a number of foster parents to participate in the Caring for Carers program, which gives foster carers the chance to have a break – whether it be a lunch, or weekend away – with other foster carers to wind down and share experiences. Foster Care Association of Victoria chief executive Katie Hooper said the organisation was running a crowdfunding campaign in February to raise money for the Caring for Carers program. “Carers are coming to us emotionally, mentally and physically depleted and we saw a need to better support them and show they are valued,” Ms Hooper said. Mayoral Column This week we have seen a real focus on positioning Wyndham as a centre of excellence in business innovation and entrepreneurship through our annual WYNovation summit. This consists of a series of events that bring together industry thought leaders who motivate and inspire across a range of fields. On Monday I was pleased to attend the Committee for Wyndham’s ‘WYNovation’ Luncheon with guest speaker Professor Vasso Apostolopoulos from Victoria University who has 20 years’ experience in cancer, vaccine development and immunology research. What a amazing woman who is truly making a difference in the medical field. Our local industry was showcased on Tuesday with the WYNnovation Roundtable and Industry Tour of local barramundi producer - Mainstream Aquaculture in Werribee. It was great to see first-hand how this impressive facility operates and discuss the issues facing small businesses. On Thursday the Committee for Economic Development Australia (CEDA) held a WYNnovation festival Luncheon with keynote speaker, Dr Charlie Day, CEO, Innovation and Science Australia. Boris Musa, CEO of Mainstream Acquaculture was part of the panel discussion and did a great job representing our City. Wyndham is home to some of the brightest and the best and it’s great to have events such as WYNovation that showcase and foster this talent – congratulations to all involved. Regards, Mia Shaw

MY WYNDHAM Mario Muraca is the owner of Bruno’s Deli and Cafe in Werribee. He chats with Alesha Capone. How long have you owned Bruno’s? I’ve been here for 10 and a half years. Prior to that I spent 35 years growing vegetables in Werribee South. What has changed across the past decade? Nowadays I notice some people get impatient and want to be served straight away. We always have two to three to staff on, but if we’re busy serving others, a customer might have to wait two or three minutes. Parking is hard to find; we do lose business because of this. It affects not only me, but lots of businesses here.
You see kids of customers who grew up. Customers become your friends. If they pass away, it’s sad. I go to their funerals. One lady, who passed away about eight weeks ago, lived in a local retirement home. She was half Italian and half Serbian. Her daughters and grandkids would come here for a coffee with her on Saturdays. I keep a stash of Sambuca below the counter for special customers, I’ll give them a little bit at Christmas or Easter. I always gave this lady a Sambuca. I went to her funeral and the person doing the eulogy said the lady used to love to come down the main street of Werribee and go to Bruno’s, where she would have a Sambuca. I was in tears – I didn’t expect her to say that. I have a rare disease, retinitis pigmentosa, and I’m legally blind. Slowly, my vision is getting foggier and foggier. Now I tell customers, if I don’t say, “Hello”, I’m not being rude – I just can’t see you.

Do you make friends with some of your customers?
Do you still live in Wyndham? I still live in Werribee South. I bought an apartment at the marina, Wyndham Harbour. Both of my kids are married now, so for my wife and I, it’s relaxing to wake up and see the
water boats, and leave the window open and get a sea breeze. I have been happily married to my wife, Antoinette, for 35 years. She’s still stuck with me for some reason. She’s my rock. What does the future hold for you?
With my problem with my eyes, sometimes I would get depressed. But my first grandchild was born seven months ago. I held her and I was so happy, I’m alive. Sometimes I catch the bus here to Bruno’s, or my wife will drive me. I’m sad that in the future we will have to sell.

Mr. Lloyd Cole of Tower Rd, Werribee shows a cucumber on a plant he has grown which measures some nine feet tall. Mr Cole’s ability for growing large plants not only applies to cucumbers; tomatoes in his back yard were almost ten feet tall until north winds caused them to drop last week.
The is a little boy with a big heart and, last Wednesday, it earned Wyndham-vale’s Michael Boulsh recognition in the eyes of big business. Michael, 9, was presented with a $50 Myer’s voucher as a reward for his honesty in recovery stolen equipment belonging to Telecom Australia.
Wyndham council has thrown its support behind plans for major changes to the route of the proposed multi-million dollar Federation Recreation Trail. The council has come out in support of many Laverton North industrialists who have objected to Bicycle Victoria’s plans to fill in the west’s disused outfall sewer and turn the tract of land into a bicycle-recreation track.
Father Max Bowers arrived at Werribee’s St Thomas’ Anglican Church with a vision: to change the old traditions and make the church more family-friendly and accessible. Over the past nine years, he introduced outreach services, including Pet Sunday and the Christmas Lighting Festival, which last year attracted more than 10,000 visitors from across Victoria.

Renowned folk rockers The Audreys will headline the all-ages family gig, supported by local Wyndham artists Jesse Valach and the Ashleigh Watson Duo. FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? MW: I love cooking. It’s one of my favourite things to do in the world, and I just find it really calming. It’s like meditation. So when I’ve got a busy or really hectic schedule, what I love to do is just cook, and I’ll cook for lots of people or I’ll cook for myself. I cooked for Christmas. I love doing it. When you’re working, your mind’s in a million places and for me, when I’m cooking, I have to concentrate on cooking. You have a glass of wine and talk. I think it’s such a valuable thing to do for me, personally. FB: What is your signature dish? MW: I think it would be a slow, slow and low cooked lamb. I cook it for about seven hours. A big beautiful lamb leg. Lots of garlic. Some anchovies. Cover the whole thing up. I slow, slow cook it for hours on end. I think any meal you can share and pull apart together is just perfect. FB: What is your favourite kind of food? MW: I feel like I was born in the wrong country. I feel like Italy is where I was supposed to be. I can’t speak Italian, but I can cook Italian. Pasta is just heaven – absolute heaven – to me. Life without pasta is life not worth living. I get great joy out of making pasta (from scratch). FB: Are you a coffee drinker? MW: I am a coffee drinker, although I’ve limited it to one a day these days because, you know, I’m getting older and I don’t sleep like I used to. I’m happy to have instant. I’m all for bringing back instant coffee. I feel like we’ve moved too far the other way with our coffees. You know, there’s nothing wrong with a Nescafe Blend 43. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? MW: David Bowie, Prince, Elvis Presley, Elton John and Madonna.

FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? MW: Tidy up as you go. There’s nothing worse than having just a mound of mess when you’re done. That takes the joy out of it for me.
INTERCHANGEABLE SLICE On the latest Food Bytes podcast, we discussed my favourite go-to slice recipe. It’s an interchangeable slice. By omitting just one ingredient, it can be something entirely different. Usually I’ll make the traditional chocolate version for my son, while hubby prefers the tangy lemon version. For lemon slice, simply leave out the two tablespoons of cocoa and ice with lemon frosting instead of chocolate. If you’re ever called on to ‘take a plate’ to party or function, here’s what you do … in one bowl, mix together 1 cup sifted self raising flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 2 tablespoons cocoa (as I said, omit if you’re making lemon slice), 1 cup caster sugar, 1 cup desiccated coconut, 150g melted butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla essence and 1 lightly beaten egg. Bake at 160 degrees celsius in a 20 x 30cm lined baking tray for 25 to 30 minutes. When cool, ice with either chocolate or lemon icing. Pictured are two versions I prepared earlier!

Seabrook is desperately scrapping to get a taste of victory for the first time since December – and this could be the week. Seabrook holds the upper hand against Williamstown Imperials at Bruce Comben Reserve. The Saints’ bowlers were outstanding on the first day, rolling the Imperials for 156 in 74.3 overs. Bees eager for kick-off By Lance Jenkinson Werribee City is leaving a little bit of intrigue in place over its starting line-up for Saturday’s much-anticipated season opener against Geelong in National Premier League 2 west at Galvin Park. The Bees have chopped and changed their personnel on a game-by-game basis over the pre-season as coach Sergio Sabbadini tries to find the right mix. “If you watched us play in the pre-season, you wouldn’t know who is going to be playing,” Sabbadini said. “That’s the same with all the teams – you go and watch them play in friendlies and they end up lining up differently.” The Bees’ record in season-openers since Sabbadini arrived at the club has been dismal. “The last three years since I’ve been there, we’ve lost our first game,” he said. “It’s really important that we make a positive start this season.” Werribee City has shown encouraging pre-season form. With the warm-up games over, Sabbadini can sense enthusiasm within the group to hit the ground running. “We’re looking forward to it,” he said. “It’s been a pretty hard pre-season, so I think they’re ready to go. “Friendlies are one thing, but once the season gets under way there’s nothing better. “We’re quietly confident going in and can’t wait for Saturday.” A focus of Werribee City in the off season has been to strengthen its defence. The Bees had been leaking far too many goals for Sabbadini’s liking. Up to five new defensive recruits – New Zealanders Dave Parkinson and Julyan Collett, Northern Territorian Shaun Hodor and local signings Daniel Petrov and Tyler James – could be vying for spots in the Bees’ starting line-up. Striker Alec Goodwin, winger Lisandro Paz and attacking midfielder Liam Brian should make the Bees more potent. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The 30th annual Jalna Big Bay Swim is on Sunday, February 24. The Rotary Club of Point Gellibrand, the event organisers, have an alternative course to avoid a repeat of the cancellation last year due to wild seas. The 3.2 kilometre race from Port Melbourne to Williamstown attracts a big and highly credentialed field. Sam Shepherd, the recent Lorne Pier to Pub winner, will be there, as will Robbe Dikissen, the Altona North teen he beat at Lorne. Lifesavers from Frankston, Mentone, Port Melbourne, Sandridge, Altona and Williamstown will be patrolling this year’s swim as well as providing paddle boarders for maximum water safety. The race finishes in Williamstown with a community festival at Commonwealth Reserve. Entries: bigbayswim.com.au ■ On that subject, water safety has never been more important as we approach the tail end of another tragic summer on Victorian beaches. One death is too many. People ignoring flags and directions from lifesavers is just reckless and should be punished accordingly. Schools are about to hold their annual swimming carnivals and I am sure the number of students who can’t swim is alarming. Not everyone can be Shane Gould, Ian Thorpe or Trevor Hendy but the old ‘can swim enough to save myself’ should be a bare minimum. I am all in favour of the school swimming certificate being compulsory. ■ The local soccer derby between Werribee City and Hoppers Crossing Soccer Club last weekend united the rivals in a common goal – to highlight the plight of jailed soccer star Hakeem Al-Araibi. A great gesture by both clubs and their supporters. Soccer in Wyndham is in a very interesting place with the Western Melbourne A League team only months away from playing. I am wondering what role all local clubs will play with the new franchise, especially in the first few years before it calls Tarneit home. I think they can all have a very healthy co existence. ■ The Melbourne Aces might be on the move from Melbourne Ballpark in Altona and that is no big surprise. The club is looking to relocate a number of its home games to Albert Park which is a more central and accessible location. There is nothing wrong with the Altona stadium unless you actually want to get there. Baseball has tried the Whitten Oval and the Showgrounds with mixed results but I hope this one works.

Tigers grab vital win in finals bid By Lance Jenkinson Werribee has won the battle of Wyndham to stay on track for a top-two finish in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west group. The Tigers roared to a 72-run win over Hoppers Crossing in their last home game of the season at Chirnside Park on Saturday. Tigers captain Tim O’Brien spoke of how crucial the victory was. “It’s pretty important … especially considering we’re not playing a home final this season,” he said. “If you can get into the top two, you give yourself a chance to go through to a semi at least and we’re working towards that.” It was always going to be a monumental task for the visitors after Werribee posted 7-294 off 80 overs on day one. Matt Dean’s knock of 103 put the Tigers firmly in control. Still, Werribee had to bowl well to defend the total. “The pitch conditions were pretty similar to last week,” O’Brien said. “It wasn’t as hot, but it was very windy and it was tough bowling conditions. They batted really well before tea.” Hoppers Crossing’s top order fired to make for an interesting second day. After Cameron Nicol was removed for 19, Jack Rhodes (65) and Adrian Myers combined for a 76-run second wicket partnership. When Myers was removed before tea with the score at 2-109, O’Brien could sense a shift in momentum.
“They were going at a good run rate, but we knew we were only a couple of wickets away from getting on top,” he said. “Getting that wicket before tea was pretty important and we were able to strike a couple more wickets after tea. “We bowled pretty tight after tea and the run rate required started to climb. “Then we got Rhodes and we started to get a few wickets in a row after that.” It was an uphill task for Hoppers Crossing from there. The Cats made a dent in the target through Trent Said (19), Nick Keast (22) and Brett Smith (30), but not enough to cause Werribee too much concern. The Cats were bowled out for 222. Werribee’s bowlers stuck to their task all day. James Freeman was the main weapon with 4-74 off 18 overs. “‘Jim was our impact bowler,” O’Brien said. “We encourage him to attack to get wickets and he was able to do that.” Just as important was the containing role of Brad Apps into the wind. He finished with a tight 2-34 off 18 overs. Mick Kelly was the pick of the spinners with 3-64 off 18, including some tough overs into the wind, while Rhys Dodemaide relished his chance in the ones, snaring 1-33 off 15. Werribee will hit the road for a tricky game against second-bottom Moorabbin, which is in form with two wins on the trot. Hoppers Crossing will be out to snap a two-game losing streak at home against Oakleigh.
