Petrol patrol gets tough By Alesha Capone Bowser bandits, watch out. A team of Werribee-based police officers is dedicated to cracking down on thieves who commit petrol drive-offs in Wyndham. Sergeant Brett Van Der Vliet said the Wyndham Petrol Drive-off Team was taking a tough approach towards motorists who filled their vehicles with petrol without paying. “At the moment, we have over 60 fuel thefts reported a month, so an average of around two a day,” he said.
He said team members had met the owners and staff from all of Wyndham’s 45 service stations. Sergeant Van Der Vliet said that he and other members of the team, including Leading Senior Constable Nathan Warrick, had given the owners and their employees advice about reporting fuel drive-offs, including the importance of reporting incidents as soon as possible and having CCTV. “The Wyndham Petrol Drive-off Team was established in November last year and we had gone around to all the service stations
by mid-December,” Sergeant Van Der Vliet said. “Since then, the reporting of thefts has increased and the information they have been providing has increased as well.” Sergeant Van Der Vliet said members of the team were using CCTV footage from petrol stations to create a database of registration plate details of vehicles involved in Wyndham fuel thefts. “We then get in contact with these drivers, whether they commit one theft or multiple thefts,” he said.
“We’ve had quite a few arrests and we have tended to go after the offenders with the more substantial number of petrol thefts first – there was one person who had around 10 to 15 drive-offs to their name.” Sergeant Van Der Vliet said that the team was focusing on offenders who had committed between one to five drive-offs, as indicated by CCTV footage from petrol stations. He said that while petrol drive-offs occurred across Wyndham, reports of them were particularly high in an area near the corner of Leakes and Fitzgerald roads in Laverton North.

Support growing for principal By Melissa Cunningham and Alesha Capone More than 12,500 people have signed an online petition calling for the principal of Manor Lakes P-12 College to be reinstated, following the release of footage which shows him appearing to drag a pupil along the ground. Principal Steve Warner has been stood down pending an investigation. The footage appears to show Mr Warner dragging the pupil by the arm while concerned parents and students can be heard yelling out as the incident unfolds.
Last week, a Change.org petition was started, calling on the Education Minister James Merlino to reinstate Mr Warner. By Monday the petition had more than 12,500 signatures. The petition says Mr Warner “has been an amazing influence on the school and it’s students”. “Steve’s dedication to his school community has been tremendous,” the petition reads. “The worst outcome of this situation would be for the school to lose him as the principal and leader.” Police have confirmed they had been notified of the video footage.
Victorian Education Minister James Merlino said the footage was “appalling and concerning”. “I will not tolerate this kind of completely unacceptable behaviour,” he said in a statement. “There will be an independent investigation into the staff member’s conduct and he has been immediately stood down while this takes place.” It is not clear when the footage of the incident was captured, but it is believed to have occurred some time last week. – with The Age

On Point for the Year of the Pig The Lunar New Year Festival at Point Cook Town Centre will feature fireworks, food, children’s activities and Chinese cultural displays. Lion and dragon dancing will be included in this year’s festival, which will celebrate the Year of the Pig. Dragon dancing, a tradition of the Han people, is performed at many Chinese festivals to scare away evil spirits. The Point Cook Cultural Community, the event’s organiser, is hoping to top the 20,000 attendance of last year’s festival.
The festival, which has a multicultural theme, will also feature tai-chi and taekwondo, Bollywood performances, African drummers, a children’s choir, hip-hop and performances from the Universal School of Music. Among those performing will be children and teachers from Rainbow Bridge Education, who have been rehearsing for months. There will be plenty of entertainment for children at the festival, including face-painting, lantern workshops, jumping castles, a slide, mini-golf and the Point Cook Fire Brigade truck.

Police detected 115 driving-related offences in Wyndham during a statewide operation during the Australia Day long weekend. During Operation Amity, which ran from just after midnight on January 25 to just before midnight on January 28, police recorded 36 speeding drivers in Wyndham. Officers also identified 20 unregistered vehicle offences, 17 seatbelt offences, eight unlicensed drivers, seven offences for disobeying road signs and signals, five mobile phone offences and four disqualified drivers. In addition, police caught one drink driver and two drug drivers, and impounded four vehicles. Eight cyclist offences were detected as well. Across Victoria, police detected more than 6500 traffic offences during Operation Amity, including more than 2200 for speeding and 371 for drink and drug driving. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said it was disappointing to see so many road users engaged in risky behavior. “It’s astounding to see so many motorists exceeding the speed limit or driving after drinking or using drugs,” he said. “We all have a part to play in reducing road trauma, whether that’s avoiding behaviours that increase risk, such as speeding or impairment, or speaking up when someone is putting themselves or others in danger. “Road trauma isn’t just something that happens to other people.” Alesha Capone

S
ocial media has emasculated us from many communication barriers and enabled many to speak out when they previously would have been silent. This is both a good and bad thing. It has allowed a generation of anonymous keyboard warriors to spew forth a torrent of nastiness and vitriol that serves no positive effect. It has also allowed many who were dismissed and bullied to stand up for themselves – and that is good. There are still some social areas where we have not conquered the awkward situation. What should I have done today in the fast-serve supermarket checkout queue when the bloke in line ahead of me had rampant BO? This discovery was not made until he had vacated the scene of the crime. The putrid, gag-inducing odour greeted me as I started to unload my groceries. It also said hello to the supermarket assistant and the shopper behind me. It was working the room, so to speak. I made an involuntary noise voicing my revulsion, the checkout staff were whispering about it and – judging by the
three-step retreat of the shopper behind me – she smelt it as well. My problem? Everyone thought it was me. I was annoyed and nauseous. Not a good combination. The real culprit had vanished. I was wearing this and was not happy, Jan! What would you do in this situation? I did my normal thing which is grin, bear it, leave and write a column about it. If this sort of situation happened on a computer, not only would the immediate victims launch into a keyboard rant, so would anyone who had ever shopped in their life, their best friends, aunties, uncles and cousins, plus several support groups. And there probably would have been several anti-BO Facebook pages within the hour. There was nothing natural about this smell. While our intestinal fortitude has grown in general, we (me) are still not as bold and brazen in person as we are on social media. Our (my) mission is to confront these social situations head on (keep a peg in your pocket) and be more assertive. Good â– luck. â–

A man was found on Market Road, Werribee, with a suspected gunshot wound last Tuesday, January 29. Emergency services were called about 11.45pm and a 23-year-old Wyndham Vale man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Weerama on a break until 2020 By Alesha Capone The Weerama Festival committee has cancelled this year’s event so it can focus on 2020 and beyond. In a statement released last week, the committee said Weerama would not go ahead this year because of a “lack of timely funding and time constraints”. Weerama president Marcel Mahfoud said the decision was not made lightly. “The committee feel it would be in the best interest[s] of everyone involved for us
to work with the Wyndham community over the next 12 months, to give the people of Wyndham the signature event they deserve,” he said. He said that the Weerama committee was hoping to establish an advisory committee comprising Wyndham council representatives and local traders, to explore ideas of “exactly what the festival should be about”. Mr Mahfoud said the Weerama committee would also like to take advantage of Wyndham council’s recent release of its proposed future Festivals and Events Strategy.
“We believe that Weerama has always been Wyndham’s signature event and would like to build on the strength of Weerama to ensure that it stays this way,” he said. Wyndham council’s chief executive Kelly Grigsby said the council “has supported the Weerama Festival Committee for many years both financially and via staff support”. “We were saddened to be advised by the committee late last year that the festival could not go ahead due to planning issues and lack of sponsorship overall,” she said. “It is important to note that the Weerama
Festival Committee applied for a $17,500 council grant which, under the application process, was not due for decision until late 2018 early 2019, which was known at the time of application.” Ms Grigsby said the Weerama committee withdrew its application for council funding late last year, after it made the decision to cancel the event. “Council will work with the broader community to ascertain what they would like to see in [a] signature event for our city,” she said.
A one-of-a-kind fur fest Fur babies big and small will be out in force when National Pet Adoption Day comes to PETstock in Hoppers Crossing. The national initiative, run by adoption site PetRescue and PETstock’s charity arm, PETstock Assist, will take place on Saturday, February 9. For the first time, all breed labels will be removed from pets listed on petrescue.com.au in the week leading up to the event. PETstock Assist charity and events co-ordinator, Jess Guilfoyle hopes the move will help Australians put aside preconceptions. “Every pet is unique and individual,” she said. “I encourage people considering a new pet to keep an open mind – you may just be surprised by who you fall for.” Animal behaviourist Kate Mornement says there are more important factors than breed. “Personality and temperament are also influenced by previous experiences and
individual differences,” Dr Mornement said. “This is why you get so much variation both within and between breeds.” Every year about 200,000 pets remain unclaimed in Australian pounds, a statistic PetRescue co-founder Vickie Davy is determined to change. “I hope by encouraging people to look for an individual pet, rather than a particular breed, we can educate people on the incredible benefits of adopting a pet in need,” she said. “Breeds come in and out of fashion … unfortunately the stereotypes around them can lead to people choosing the wrong pet. “National Pet Adoption Day is a fantastic opportunity for Hoppers Crossing locals to find their perfect match.” PETstock Hoppers Crossing is at 431 Old Geelong Road. New magistrate for busy court By Alesha Capone An additional magistrate has been allocated to sit at the Werribee Magistrates Court one day a week to help deal with an “increased workload” in the region. A court spokesperson last week said: “An additional list has been added to the Werribee Magistrates Court on Wednesdays as of 23 January, 2019.” “This will mean that apart from a few ad hoc Wednesdays, two magistrates will sit at Werribee on a Wednesday.”
The spokesperson said this meant more legal cases would now be heard at Werribee on Wednesdays. The spokesperson said the additional magistrate was added as “part of a reworking of the current listing structure for the region” to accommodate increased workloads at both the Werribee and Sunshine Magistrates Courts and the ability to hold Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) sittings at both courts. “VCAT sat at Werribee on Wednesdays but now sits on Thursday – they also sit there on
Mondays and Fridays,” the spokesperson said. During August last year, Star Weekly published an article in which Wyndham Cr Kim McAliney called on both the state government and opposition to commit to funding a new multi-jurisdictional court in Werribee. Cr McAliney, the council’s safer communities portfolio holder, said Werribee’s court was built more than 30 years ago, when the municipality’s population was about 40,000. “Despite the massive population growth
we’re experiencing in Wyndham, our magistrates court is dangerously small and antiquated, with residents required to travel outside of the municipality for both criminal and civil matters,” Cr McAliney said. “Our population has surged past 250,000 and we are bigger than Geelong, it is inconceivable that our community should be expected to make do with these outdated and insufficient facilities. “We need a multi-jurisdictional court that can service a community of our size, not one built in the 1980s.”

Werribee teenager Kensley Ward received the surprise of a lifetime when she met her idol, AFLW player Moana Hope, at Brunswick Oval last week. The meeting came about after Kensley, 13, wrote Hope a letter earlier this month. In the letter, Kensley wrote about her dream to be an AFLW player in the future, despite some people telling her she should pick a different career. When Hope uploaded a photo of the letter to Instagram, it received thousands of likes and supportive comments. Kensley was invited to the launch of the Special K Strong Play campaign, to empower the next generation of AFLW players, with a proviso from the league that she read the letter at the event. But when Kensley arrived at Brunswick Oval, she actually met Hope and was given a chance to train with her.
Kensley said she found the whole experience “crazy” and “awesome”. “She told me never to give up,” she said of her meeting with Hope, who played the first two seasons of the AFLW with Collingwood and will play for North Melbourne this year. Hope said that she enjoyed the chance to chat with Kensley. “Clearly she’s strong and she’s gotten through some hard times,” Hope said. “I told her to just keep going and keep fighting.” Hope said that she was not expecting “such a big response” after she uploaded Kensley’s letter to Instagram. “I think it’s pretty amazing and I can’t believe I have that kind of effect on anyone,” she said. Cars nabbed, destroyed by cops By Alesha Capone Police have impounded almost 600 vehicles in Wyndham in two years as a result of driving offences including hooning, speeding and drink-driving. Victoria Police statistics show that between July, 2017, and June last year, police impounded 302 vehicles in the Wyndham area. Eighty-eight of those vehicles were destroyed under the state’s anti-hoon laws. Between July, 2016, and June 2017, police impounded 296 vehicles in Wyndham,
including 71 vehicles that were destroyed. The statistics relate to vehicles impounded in Wyndham, not the number of Wyndham residents whose vehicles were impounded. A Victoria Police spokesperson said police could impound vehicles such as cars, trucks and motorcycles for up to 30 days. “Offences for which a vehicle can be impounded are serious,” he said. “The most common reasons for impoundments include drink and drug-driving, excessive speed, driving while disqualified or suspended, unlicensed driving,
improper use and careless driving. Police will take every opportunity to detect and prosecute those engaging in these dangerous behaviours and get them off our roads. “Impounding their vehicles is an effective way to do this … it’s timely to remind hoons and other dangerous drivers that we now have increased powers to impound their vehicles.” Under rules that took effect in October last year, police can impound the vehicle of a driver who is caught behind the wheel while unlicensed, or with a disqualified or suspended license, including for a first offence.
“On-the-spot impoundment is also now available for drug-driving, drink-driving with a blood alcohol concentration of below 0.1 and recklessly damaging an emergency vehicle if the driver has been convicted for any impoundable offence in the previous six years,” the spokesperson said. “Taking away the ability of these drivers to put themselves and others in danger is a powerful tool to prevent death and serious injury on our roads, and we will use these powers wherever an opportunity exists to keep our roads safe.”
Step it up for charity The Manor Lakes, Wyndham Rotary Fun Run/ Walk is on again this year, raising funds for a worthy cause. The majority of funds raised by this year’s event, to be held on March 17, will go to the Werribee Mercy Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. Entrants will be able to run five or 10 kilometres, or walk four or eight kilometres, around the scenic Werribee River in Werribee. Battle for Morris Road gumtrees By Alesha Capone Hoppers Crossing residents are calling on Wyndham council to protect gumtrees they fear could be removed if a telecommunications tower is built nearby. The historic trees are located near the intersection of Morris Road and Nicklaus Drive and not far from a council-owned reserve at 238 Morris Road. The council last year approved a proposal to lease part of the reserve for the proposed installation of a 30-metre-high telecommunications tower. More than 160 people have signed a petition opposing the tower. Residents Steve Hardeman and Andrew Knight, who live nearby, said they were concerned that if the tower was installed, the nearby “beautiful old gumtrees” could be removed. They have sent a letter to the council, asking for the trees to be included on Wyndham’s Significant Trees Register. The register contains a list of about 40 trees that require planning permits to be removed or lopped. Mr Hardeman and Mr Knight said they believed the trees should be included on the register because they were part of the original Morris family home and dairy site. Morris Road was named after the farming family headed by Martin and Emma Morris, who both died in 1937. “They are also the largest trees for many kilometres around, provide mature tree habitat for many native birds and help create a very rare piece of open shaded space along Morris Road,” Mr Hardeman said. Wyndham council was contacted for comment.

Discovering new options By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has purchased an “iconic site” in Werribee. The council last week issued a statement which said it had acquired the Discovery Centre building on Exploration Avenue, off the Princes Highway, from Melbourne Water. A council spokesperson said they could not reveal how much the council paid for the centre, because it was “commercial-in-confidence”.

But Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said the purchase of the Discovery Centre, which was previously used for public displays related to the Western Treatment Plant, was “strategic” given its close proximity to the Werribee city centre. “We as a council put a lot of thought and planning into strategic purchases like this,” Cr Shaw said. “Given our community is growing at such a rapid rate, we make purchases like the Discovery Centre, so that we as a council, along with our community, have more control on the future of these sites. “The decision to purchase the Melbourne Water Discovery Centre is just the latest in our plan to redevelop Werribee and position it as a major regional focal point.” Cr Shaw said the council was still exploring ideas about potential uses of the Discovery Centre. “We’re working in partnership with Development Victoria to develop a cohesive

developments under way in the Werribee city centre to re-shape the region,” she said. “These developments will deliver 1400 new parking spaces, both public and private, as well as 5000 square metres of office space, 2500 square metres of retail and cafe space, 200 residential apartments bringing 700 new residents to the city centre.”

Police seek witnesses to Truganina fight Two people were allegedly stabbed during a fight between a large group of people in Truganina on Sunday, January 27. Residents living in the surrounding streets reported there was a heavy police presence and forensics crew on site until about midnight. Some roads were closed as police carried out their investigation. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police were investigating “reports of a fight between a large group of people” in the area. The spokeswoman said police were called to Marquands Road just after 3.30pm, where they found a man with what is believed to be stab wounds. He was taken to hospital. “A second male presented himself to hospital with what appeared to be stab wounds and a third male with head injuries, all non-life threatening,” the spokeswoman said. She said most people had left the scene before police arrived. “Detectives are speaking with a number of witnesses and the exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined,” she said. Wyndham residents are being urged to be vigilant about dangerous fire behavior. Crime Stoppers, with CFA, Victoria Police and Forest Fire Management Victoria are conducting a Reckless Fires Cost Lives campaign during the fire season. The campaign emphasises that whether recklessly or deliberately lit, bush and grass fires have disastrous consequences. Ms Sawant said she organised the first Indian bazaar at the Italian Sports Club of Werribee, in August, 2017. “I used to run an online retail store and so had stalls at different markets,” she said. “I absolutely loved the vibe and family-friendly atmosphere. “It reminded me of bazaars in India where I used to go as a little girl with my parents. “I wanted to recreate that buzz and vibe right here in Melbourne, a bazaar where you could get all things Indian – clothing, jewellery, home decor, spices, with rocking Bollywood music going on in the background. And, of course, street food. “Families coming together to the bazaar with a smile on their faces, that’s the best feeling in the world.” The Indian Bazaar will run from 5.30-10pm at Point Cook Community Centre on Saturday, February 9. No joy for postal service By Alesha Capone Hundreds of people have signed petitions calling for a Community Postal Agency to be established at the Werribee South General Store. Store owner Gary Hardman began the petitions about three weeks ago, in response to customer comment that they would like a local postal service, to pick up parcels. Copies of the petition are available to sign at both the general store and the next-door cafe, Caffe Di Daniela, which Mr Hardman also owns. So far, more than 360 people have signed the petitions.

An online petition at Change.org has been signed by more than 75 people. Australia Post has more than 700 Community Postal Agencies (CPAs), which offer varying mail and postage services. Mr Hardman said about three months ago, he had filled out an “expression of interest”, at the Australia Post website, for the Werribee South General Store to become a CPA. However, he says he is yet to hear back from Australia Post. Mr Hardman said he did not think that a CPA would earn much money, but it was a service urgently needed in Werribee South. “We are a very community-minded business and want to do things which the community needs,” he said.

Mr Hardman said when residents missed deliveries at their homes, they were often left a note telling them to pick up the parcel from Australia Post in Hoppers Crossing. But Mr Hardman said driving to Hoppers Crossing in peak time could take an hour or more. “Our customers have mentioned they would
like a local postal outlet multiple times, because people don’t want to make the horror trip to Hoppers Crossing,” he said. An Australia Post spokesperson said the organisation did not believe Werribee South required a CPA “at this point in time”. But the spokesperson said that Australia Post would continue to “monitor” the situation.

Bun fun goes on as bakery stays open The Bakers Delight store at Pacific Werribee shopping centre has been given a second lease on life. Star Weekly last week reported that the store was scheduled to close when its lease expired on Sunday, February 3. Signs were erected at the store last month to inform customers about the impending closure. But on Monday, a Bakers Delight spokesman said that the store would remain open. “Since announcing we would be closing our bakery at Werribee Plaza (Pacific Werribee) on 3 February, we have been flooded with messages of support and best wishes from the local community,” he said. “This incredible show of support from our loyal customers, combined with the good faith negotiations we have had with the landlord, has given us a change of heart and we have decided to remain open for business. “This is great news for the Werribee community and we thank everyone who has been in touch to share their warm regards in recent weeks. “We look forward to delighting our customers in the bakery for many years to come.” The Bakers Delight at Pacific Werribee has been in operation for seven years. Mayoral Column Last week I met with Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek and it was a great opportunity to highlight our population and growth challenges and the importance of the Growing Suburbs Fund for cities like Wyndham. These meetings are so important for us to be able to talk through what’s needed for our growing City – particularly in the lead up to the preparation of the State Budget. It was a great opportunity to reinforce the need for the continuation of the Growing Suburbs Fund which is a funding source specific to growing cities like Wyndham. Advocating to the State Government is a key role for Council and we are currently finalising our State Budget submission. This is a really important piece of work and something that Councillors have a great deal of input into based on feedback from the community. I will be meeting with our new Local Members over the coming weeks to highlight our budget priorities. With the school holidays drawing to a close this week – I wanted to take this opportunity to wish the new starters all the best for their school experience and to remind everyone to slow down in school zones and obey parking restrictions – enjoy the school year! Straight from the heart By Alesha Capone Hoppers Crossing husband-and-wife Keith and Belle Emmett have a special reason to celebrate Valentine’s Day. February 14 will mark the couple’s 60th wedding anniversary. They married at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Williamstown in 1959, the same place where Mrs Emmett’s parents tied the knot. Long marriages are also something of a tradition in Mrs Emmett’s family, with both her parents and maternal grandparents reaching their 50th wedding anniversaries. Mrs Emmett said she met her future husband when they both worked at the Newport Railway Workshops. She would ride a bike to work, and Mr Emmett rode a motorcycle. One day he followed her home along Champion Road in Williamstown, and asked her out on a date. “I told him I couldn’t go on Friday night, because I was going to the pictures with my sisters,” she said. Mr Emmett added: “We couldn’t go Saturday, as I was going to the speedway, so we went out the next Friday.” Love soon bloomed, and after they married the pair lived in Altona North for 46 years. They moved to Hoppers Crossing about 12 years ago. They have two children, Jenny and Brian, and five grandchildren. During their time together, the couple also received a 30-year achievement award from the Classic Motorcycle Club of Victoria. Mrs Emmett said the secret to a successful marriage was “working together”, while Mr Emmett said it was also important “to be honest with each other”.

Grill thriller for local favourite By Alesha Capone A Point Cook restaurant is winning over taste buds across Melbourne. The Korean Grill House has been presented with a People’s Choice award in this year’s Australian Good Food Guide Reader’s Awards, for the second year in a row. The restaurant’s owners, husband-and-wife Arlan and Vanessa Lim Van Rooyen, said they were both passionate about Korean food. “Vanessa is born and bred in Seoul in South Korea, and I’m a former hotel and restaurant chef,” Mr Van Rooyen said.
“We love to entertain and we do so with our restaurant, we love good conversation and cooking and there’s no better way than seeing a meal cooked in front of you and enjoyed by your loved ones … this is the true essence of Korean barbecue.” Mr Van Rooyen said that to win the Australian Good Food Guide award two years in a row was “just unbelievable”. “We are truly blessed and are overwhelmed by the local support from our Point Cook community,” he said, “We also include and utilise local businesses in our restaurant menu – Sanctuary Lakes
Seafood, Shadowfax Winery, Poultry Plus More, JJJ Brothers Meats, whom always push to deliver exceptional service and produce for our restaurant.” Mr Van Rooyen also described his restaurant staff as “simply amazing” including sous chef Si-Young Choi, kitchen co-ordinator Sanghyo Lee and floor manager Miss Ji-hoo You. “In all, our staff can converse in six different languages,” he said. “We don’t have any staff members that study or are in the hospitality field, all of them are students studying to make there own path in different fields.”

New group plays on senses A cultural learning playgroup is being run at two different Point Cook community centres this school term. CUTEKids is playgroup for children aged up to five, at the Point Cook Community Learning Centre on Thursdays from 9.15-10.30am. The shire president, Cr. Jim Bellin, assured the Banner on Monday that there was nothing cut and dried about the inquiry soon to be conducted into boundaries of the six western municipalities. This assurance has come from the Minister of Local Government in response to rumors that the outcome was a forgone conclusion.
A $6 million Group Self Build Scheme, the only one of its kind in Australia, was launched in Werribee by the Housing and Commission Minister, Mr. Barry Pullen, last week. The scheme, which is already a success in Wodonga and modeled on the Ministry’s Urban Home-extending program, will put 10 Melbourne families into their own homes in Werribee and Melton within 12 months.
Emergency services crews have described a horrific fatal accident on the Maltby Bypass early Sunday morning as “extremely gruesome” and one of the worst in recent memories. Five cars and 14 people were involved in the crash.
A western suburbs taxi driver has labeled parts of Wyndham more dangerous at night than Melbourne’s notorious King Street nightclub precinct. His claim comes in the wake of last Thursday’s violence at Hoppers Crossing train station when up to a dozen youths attacked two taxis with stones, bottles and wooden stakes as they waited at the rank about 9pm.

MY WYNDHAM Fine artist, illustrator and drawing instructor Michelle Ripari lives in Hoppers Crossing. She chats with Alesha Capone. How did you become an artist? I’ve always drawn. I started doing commissions while I was a teacher. I worked with autistic children and also did emergency teaching. But I was injured and was diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome, a chronic pain disorder. I’ve learned to cope with it – I think that’s why I’m such an advocate for art to help with healing. I’ve had depression myself and I found it very therapeutic to do something creative. I’ve been teaching drawing for about three years. I enjoy connecting with different people and meeting people from all different fields, backgrounds, cultures and jobs. Do many people say, “I can’t draw” to you ?

All the time. When people say, ‘I can’t draw,’ I say, ‘You can write your letters, can’t you? If you can draw letters, you can draw’. I say to people to carry a sketch pad with them and practice for five to 10 minutes every day, you would be amazed at what a difference that can make. You use graphite, watercolour and coloured pencils? I did start out with graphites, then I got a commission to draw some chickens. I didn’t think black and white would do them justice, so I decided to do it in colour – I got lots of good feedback for that. Then I decided to do a landscape. A friend of mine had taken a photo of a tree smouldering after the 2014 Numurkah fires. I asked my friend if I could draw the photo. I kept going and I realised I loved doing it. I got awards for that artwork, it’s been published and sold. I specifically love colour pencils, because of the detail you can get from them.
What is your favourite thing about living in Wyndham? I must say the arts team at Wyndham council are very supportive. I have friends who live in other council areas and those councils are nowhere near as good. I love the Saltwater Arts Studio, it’s artist-run with council support. I take care of the studio’s website and newsletter. Some of my gumtree artwork is on display at Notorious Espresso in Werribee at the moment.
It’s great they do that. I’ve been shortlisted for the Wyndham Art Prize for three years running, which is a great competition. What else you do, apart from art? Apart from fine arts, I’ve been doing illustrations lately. With the Wyndham Writing Group, I have two short stories in their 2018 anthology and I also drew illustrations for it. As well, I did illustrations for the group’s
Childhood Adventures book. It’s my dream to do a children’s book. Ms Ripari will teach pencil classes for people aged 10 and over on Tuesdays, 6.30pm at the Wyndham Arts Incubator, Werribee until March 12 ($220 for six weeks, materials included). CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir casts a line at this Maribyrnong fish bar “Dad, your patty looks like it’s a frozen one!” Such is Bennie’s gloomy visual assessment of my wagyu burger at Fugu Fish Bar. A fresh-faced fish and burger joint, Fugu is at the nexus of Hampstead and Wests roads, a few blocks from Highpoint and in a long-standing small shopping precinct that houses another dedicated burger joint. This is an area undergoing rapid change as more and more people move in. We both “combo” our meals for $3 extra, so my burger deal clocks in at $17 with the addition of coleslaw. My burger is better than indicated by Bennie’s scorn – but it’s acceptable without being memorable. The coleslaw is outstanding. Bennie is happy with his southern chicken burger ($15 with chips), even though it appears a little crumpled. The chips are OK. Just. On an earlier, reconnaissance visit, I enjoyed my blue grenadier with chips and coleslaw, the latter again superb. The little things count! In this case, I was not offered a combo set-up so my lunch costs more through the addition of $6 worth of salad on top of the $12 for the classic fish/chip deal. The fish was bigger than it looked at first glance and good eating, though the batter was a bit doughy. Fugu has been recommended to us so we are disappointed to be a little underwhelmed.

SPORT Werribee defender their best Brett Matthew Brett, one of the most improved players at Werribee last season, has been rewarded with a fresh contract at the Victorian Football League club. The 24-year-old has signed on the dotted line for a fifth season with Werribee and is expected to be a key member of the team’s defensive unit. Brett enjoyed a break-out campaign in 2018 after previously managing just 13 games in three years. The Murray Bushrangers product did not play a single game in 2017 due to injury. Last season, though, was Brett’s time to shine. He played 16 of a possible 18 games as a tough-as-nails mid-sized defender. His season highlight was a match-saving mark against Box Hill Hawks in round 19 that saw him take out the club’s inaugural mark of the year award at the Bruce Montgomery Trophy night. Werribee football operations manager Stuart Balloch is confident Brett can better his form of last season.
“It’s been a pretty dramatic turnaround for Matt, that’s for sure,” Balloch said. “He had a tough time of it through 2017, so for him to come out and produce the season he did for us in defence last year was really impressive. “With the benefit of a good pre-season behind him, we’re hopeful he can find another gear again in 2019. “We’re really pleased he’s now formally recommitted to the club.” Meanwhile, Werribee’s practice match schedule has been released. The side will have its first hit-out under new coach Mark Williams on March 15 when the Geelong Cats pay a visit to Avalon Airport Oval. Then have a think about how tough it must have been for the Hoppers Crossing players chasing the red ball to all points of Chirnside Park in the heat. When their second-wicket partnership was snapped after three hours and 43 minutes, the Tigers were in a dominant position at 2-168, setting the foundation for Werribee’s huge total of 7-294 off 80 overs. “I was certainly in my pads for a long time,” O’Brien said with a laugh. “They batted very smartly and built a really good partnership. “It was a wicket where once you got yourself in, you could score big runs.” Matt Dean is having a summer to remember. The left-handed opener brought up his third century of the season, finishing with 103 off 184 balls, including 11 fours and a six. Dean is third in the competition’s runs aggregate with 489, but only because he has played four less games than the players above him. A true reflection of his dominance can be found in a league-best average of 81.50. “He’s having a stellar season,” O’Brien said. “Once he gets himself in, he cashes in, which is great reward for him and the team. “He’s very disciplined, he knows his game back to front and he’s very fit, so he can bat time. “It has to take a good ball to get him out because his technique is so good.” Shaun Dean probably needed a big score after a quiet patch since returning from the mid-season break. His 77 off 161 was his top score for the summer and represents a warning to bowlers with finals around the corner. “Shaun’s knock was fantastic, too, to get him back in the big runs,” O’Brien said. “We knew he wasn’t far off. It was about him batting time in the middle … he got through today and was able to take advantage.” James Freeman provided a valuable 44 in the middle order, while Matthew Harmer delivered his top score for the season with 45 not out.
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ It is difficult not to refer to the run-making brothers who pilfer bowling attacks in the subbies for Werribee as The Dean Machine, because they are a prolific combination. It is a name that the unassuming pair is not fond of, but one they’ll have to get accustomed to based on current form. Last weekend Matt knocked out yet another century – his third of the season – and he has a 97 as well; while brother Shaun scored 77, his third 50-plus score of the year. Unfortunately younger brother Travis, who plays for Footscray Edgewater in premier cricket and for Victoria, had a lean day with the willow, scoring 1. Werribee amassed a formidable 7-294 against Hoppers Crossing. The Werribee bowlers will have the collective might of four, first XI premiership reunions supporting them next Saturday at Chirnside Park. ■ Adam Contessa is juggling a few sports caps at the moment with his new role as senior coach of the Sunshine Kangaroos in the WRFL division one competition ramping up. The Kangaroos suffered a grand final hangover of sorts in 2018 and Adam has the big job of righting the ship. He also is a very important cog in the Yarraville Club Cricket Club first XI where he got among the wickets last weekend. With Will Sheridan out of the attack early, Contessa chimed in with a tidy 4-27 as the Clubbers took the points over Spotswood. Adam is also on the committee for the Western Bulldogs past players and officials, has a young family and business life. ■ Yarraville Cricket Club is holding its annual president’s luncheon on Friday, February 22, at the Yarraville Club in Stephen Street, Yarraville from 12.30pm. Greek legend is an A-list soccer signing for the west Panagiotis Kone will be a household name in Melbourne’s west before too long. The Greek international has signed as Western Melbourne Group’s first marquee player ahead of its entry into the A-League in October. Kone will be with the soon-to-be-named expansion club on a two-year contract. He has the club’s powerbrokers, including football director Steve Horvat, excited. “Our club has made a huge statement by signing Panagiotis Kone as our inaugural marquee player,” Horvat said. “This signing shows how serious we are about building a strong squad for our first season in the A-League and we cannot wait for Panagiotis to arrive and get started.” A player with plenty of flair, Kone will be a driving force in the attacking midfield position for the new club. What will excite the fans
will be Kone’s spectacular goal scoring and celebrations to match. “He’s an attacker who will get the fans off their seats,” Horvat said. “He brings genuine quality to our club and the league and has an international profile which will boost our club’s reputation globally.” Kone has been a regular fixture in the Greek national team. The 31-year-old has been capped 28 times for his nation, including representation at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He has played in the top leagues in Greece, with AEK Athens, and in Italy, featuring in more than 160 games, mainly with Brescia, Bologna and Udinese. In 2013, while playing with Bologna, Kone was nominated for FIFA’s goal of the year award for a spectacular bicycle kick against Napoli. It is not only Kone’s exploits on the pitch that will be valuable for Western Melbourne Group.
“He speaks good English and is a real character who our fans and the entire community of western Melbourne will love seeing represent them in the A-League,” Horvat said. Giants scrape out a win By Lance Jenkinson It was the victory the Werribee Giants had to have. The Giants had dramatically stalled since the start of the new year in Baseball Victoria summer league division 2, putting a major question mark over their contender status. All the Giants had to show from the whole month of January was one win – not the kind of return you would expect from an outfit that went to the mid-season break as one of the teams to beat. Is a nailbiting 6-5 win over Malvern Braves at President’s Park on Saturday enough to bring Werribee back to life? Giants coach John Curnow will not have the answer until the rest of February plays out, but he sure is happy to get back on to the winners’ list. “It was a bit of a scrappy game,” he said. “We just got over the line in the end, which was handy because we’ve been playing a bit ordinary lately. “We copped a couple [of losses] that we didn’t want to and we really needed to get this one on the board today.” Werribee had to fight back from deficits on three different occasions. The Giants trailed by a run in the first inning, two runs in the third and two runs in the fourth. Not helping their cause was a rare off day from starting pitcher Josh Lee. Lee as good as volunteered to be taken out of the game after 3.2 innings because he was just not feeling it on the day. “He had one of his bad games – hopefully it’s the only one for the year,” Curnow said. “He just couldn’t throw enough strikes and threw a few walks. “He sat a few over the middle of the plate and gave up some hits, so they got on top of him. “I went out during that third inning to try and settle him and he was telling me how bad he was going. “I just said try and get us out of this dig, but he was handing me the ball before I got out there.” While it was not ideal having Lee leave the game so early, the trust in Wes De Jong to steer the team back on track is what makes Werribee a good team. The Giants showed, in this sticky situation, that they are not reliant on a single ace. De Jong came into the game on short notice and was there to throw the winning pitch at the end. “He battled for us for the rest of the game,” Curnow said. Catcher Oliver Box and Wade Balzer were standouts in the batters’ box for Werribee with three hits apiece. sixth and then producing the go-ahead hit in the eighth. Werribee is now locked into the finals, though Curnow knows the side needs to lift between now and then. “We’ve got plenty of improvement to make before finals,” he said.
“It’s just about everyone getting down to training and getting their work in, working on the little things. We’re sort of starting to prepare ourselves for finals now.” Second-placed Werribee will continue its series with Malvern on Thursday evening at President’s Park.
Werribee has swarmed finals contender Fitzroy Victoria for an upset 98-72 win in the Bowls Victoria division 1 at Chirnside Park on Saturday. The Bees were in serious danger of relegation at the mid-season break, but two wins out of three since the start of the new year has eased those fears somewhat. They are now 21 points clear of the bottom two with four rounds to play. More importantly, Werribee is starting to produce its best bowls of the season. The Bees not only beat a Fitzroy Victoria side in the top four, but did so with a commanding performance. They rose to seventh place on the ladder after winning three of the four rinks and claimed 16 competition points. Rob Patton and Rob Smith had comfortable victories for Werribee. Peter Yasar did it the hard way, coming back from nine shots down to win by a single shot, storming home with a five, followed by two threes. Bees player Steve Weston reckons his side is on the up. “The team’s confidence is now sky high at present with the team believing it can create another upset next week,” he said. Werribee will face fourth-placed Glenroy at Chirnside Park on Saturday. In division 2, Hoppers is licking its wounds after a 98-52 punishment from Altona at Civic Parade on Saturday. Spinners are grinners as Warriors build momentum Point Cook has emerged as title front-runner in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 with two rounds to play. The Warriors won both their matches at the weekend in convincing fashion to move into top spot, taking advantage of a slip-up by Sunshine in the process. Now riding a four-game winning streak, Warriors coach Aaron Whear could hardly fault how his side is tracking. “Delighted with how we’re going, absolutely,” he said. “When you’re 10-1 at this point in the season, things have been going pretty well.” Point Cook edged two points clear at the top with an eight-wicket obliteration of bottom side Footscray United in a one-day game at Saltwater Reserve on Sunday. The Warriors were surfing a wave of confidence stemming from their
three-wicket win over Williamstown Imperials a day earlier. Footscray United was dismissed for a mere 84 in 38.4 overs. Teams traditionally have three or four pacemen and supplement them with one or two spinners. The Warriors are doing things differently, utilising four spinners and two seamers. “It’s a nice little mix of bowlers that we’ve got,” Whear said. The four spinners – Whear (off-spin), James Doolan (off-spin), Gurbaksh Khaira (left-arm orthodox) and Karan Kalia (leg-spin) – offer contrasts that are working for Point Cook. The quicks – West Indian import Jaden Edmund and new recruit Sarwan Kumar – are in the competition’s top 15 bowlers. They
showed their qualities with three wickets apiece in the Footscray United rout. Point Cook’s run chase was looking shaky at 2-9 with early dismissals of Harpreet Singh and captain Brett Talbot. But the Warriors steadied through Kumar (37no) and Scott Maloney (26no) and passed the target with 20 overs to spare. “Singh and Talbot have opened the batting all year and they’ve been real standouts for us,” Whear said. “They’ve missed out today, but it was nice to have the slack picked up by Scotty Maloney and Sarwan.” Point Cook will meet third-placed Sunshine Heights in a finals-like game in a two-dayer starting on Saturday. Celeste Mucci has beaten a star-studded field of young western suburbs athletes to emerge with the Don Deeble rising sport star of the year award for 2018. The heptathlete was adjudged to be the best of the best at the annual awards night at the Yarraville Club on Wednesday night. Mucci received the honour, along with $5000, donated by Yarraville Club Cricket Club. “There’s so many amazing athletes in the west,” Mucci said. “I’m really happy we get to have this awards night … I’m really grateful for this club and to the sponsors. I have a lot of interstate and international trips this year, so this money will definitely help towards that.” Mucci, 19, a product of the Williamstown Athletics Club, competed at two major events in 2018. She was in the Australian open-age team at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and represented Australia at the IAAF world under-20 championships in Finland. Coming fourth in the Commonwealth Games on home soil is something Mucci will reflect upon fondly. “I took away a lot of confidence from that trip overall and competing in front of a home crowd is something that I will never forget,” she said. “I definitely learnt a lot from that experience and, moving forward, I’ll definitely take bits from that into my future competitions.” Later in the year, in Finland, Mucci strutted her stuff on the international stage. At the world under-20s two years ago, the
Maribyrnong College graduate had to settle for 17th. This time around, she just missed out on the podium, finishing fifth. “Going back to my age group in my second world juniors as a top-age athlete, I definitely wanted to compete better than I did in 2016,” Mucci said. “It was definitely one of the strongest competitions I’ve ever had, so to come away with a fifth, I was very happy.” Mucci has a number of landmark events to tick off in the next 18 months. Everything the Altona resident does will be geared towards qualification for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “I’ve got a few European competitions coming up this year,” she said. “Hopefully [I’ll]score well enough for the World University Games and put myself in a good position for next year’s national trials, which will be Olympic trials.” Mucci will do it all with a smile. She relishes the chance to compete against the best heptathlates in the world and the challenges that come through training every day. “The girls coming through my age are very strong as well,” she said. “I love all of them – they’re all great athletes and great girls.” The Don Deeble rising sport star of the year 2018 runners-up, Bailey Lewis (taekwondo) and Luke Plapp (cycling), each received $2500. The other finalists were Dylan Molinaro (squash), Dylan Brasher (cricket), Louise Mendes (athletics), Xavier O’Halloran (football), Carly James (hockey), Nikau Pouaka-Grego (baseball) and Frank Mazza (athletics).
