A striking and symbolic face will greet pupils at one of Truganina’s newest schools when it opens next month. Esteemed Victorian street artist Matt Adnate has put the final touches on this masterpiece in the foyer of Doherty’s Creek P-9 College ahead of its first school year. Principal Ian Wren said the mural of a young Wurundjeri girl would reflect some of the school’s core values. “It’s very exciting starting a new school and the artwork sets a tone for the kind of school that we want to be,â€? Mr Wren said. “I wanted to develop an inclusive new school and it’s important to acknowledge the indigenous people of this land. “Another significance of the artwork is that we wanted to place the child at the front of the school [reception] ‌ we always want to put our children first.â€? Mr Wren, former principal at Bacchus Marsh Primary School, said about 225 children were enrolled to start school on February 1 and an event to welcome new pupils and their families would be held later this week. Two cameras: $1.7m fines By Joanna Catalano Two of Wyndham’s fixed speed cameras have already netted nearly $1.7 million in fines so far this financial year. Figures from the state government’s Cameras Save Lives website reveal the road safety cameras in Wyndham – all on the Princes Freeway – are among the most profitable in the state. A total of 3850 drivers heading towards Geelong were caught by the camera under the Forsyth Road bridge in Point Cook, bringing in $910,827 from July to September last year. Safety spokesperson said the number of motorists speeding is alarming. “While there has been a drop in infringements at these two locations compared to the previous quarter, it’s disappointing that almost 7000 motorists were caught breaking the law,� the spokesperson said. “On average, that’s around 76 motorists every day – at these two locations alone – willing to put lives at risk and risk causing serious injuries to themselves or others.� The six cameras that make up the Geelong Road camera system nabbed 19,983 speeding incidents for July to September 2018

for a total of $4,814,518 in fines. For the same time period in 2017 there were 13,981 fines issued from the same system for a total fine value of $3,397,830. In 2017, 4311 drivers heading towards Geelong were caught by the camera under the Forsyth Road bridge in Point Cook and 2379 at Point Wilson Road in Little River. “Speeding directly contributes to at least 30 per cent of deaths on Victoria’s roads each year, which is why we strictly enforce speed limits,� the department spokesperson said. “Speed cameras are critical to changing driver behaviour and keeping people safe.�

West stations high in crime By Alesha Capone Western suburbs train stations are a hot spot for crime, police data has revealed. Sunshine, Footscray, Newport, Werribee, Williams Landing and St Albans are among Melbourne’s worst suburban train stations for criminal offences. Sunshine had the second highest number of offences reported for stations outside the city loop. Between October, 2017 and September last year, 168 offences were reported at the station, compared with 168 in the previous 12 months.

Dandenong topped the list with 414 offences (compared to 353 in the previous 12 months). Ringwood was third with 158 crimes (169 previously), Footscray had 127 crimes (139 previously) and Newport had 121 crimes (100 previously). Werribee was ninth with 86 crimes reported in the 12 month period, compared with 98 previously. Williams Landing was 11th with 79 crimes (40 previously) and St Albans 13th with 75 crimes (37 previously). Across the rest of the west’s railway stations, Watergardens recorded 57 crimes (59 previously), Laverton 51 (34 previously), Tarneit

48 (66 previously), Melton 43 (46 previously) and Hoppers Crossing 42 (49 previously). Yarraville, Deer Park, West Footscray and Wyndham Vale stations recorded between 30 to 39 crimes each (compared to 48 previously in Yarraville, 15 in Deer Park, 29 in West Footscray and 17 in Wyndham Vale). Altona station recorded 28 crimes (27 previously). The train stations with the least amount of crime in the west were Seaholme and Rockbank, with two crimes each. Aircraft station recorded four crimes, while North Williamstown, Seddon and Ardeer

recorded seven crimes each. Inspector Jon Woodyatt, from the Transit West Local Area Command, said offences most commonly committed on Melbourne’s public transport network included property damage, behaviour offences, assault, thefts from vehicles and other types of theft. “In the western suburbs, offending on public transport network is similar, although bicycle theft is also an issue,” he said. He said that Protective Services Officers, police patrols and extensive CCTV systems were in place across the network to help prevent crime and catch offenders.

Celebrate the Australian way Point Cook’s Charlize, 6, is looking forward to Australia Day this weekend. At 5.30pm, the film Babe will be shown on the big screen in Station Place. “This family-friendly event will also feature rides and kids’ activities, plus a special addition,

A 13-year-old boy was punched unconscious by a group of youths in Tarneit during a series of crimes committed in the suburb last Wednesday. Channel Nine news reported that the boy’s father discovered a group of youths in the backyard of his Tarneit home about 11pm. The youths allegedly hit the man’s family members with tree branches and rocks. The offenders then attacked the man’s 13-year-old son. The victim’s mother said she found her son in “a pool of blood”. The teen was taken to hospital following the attack and has since been released. About 11pm on Wednesday, a group of youths also attempted to rob a teenage boy in Finchley Park Crescent, Tarneit. They made demands for the victim’s property but he ran from the scene. Hours later, police were called to a house on Harmony Drive in regards to a “disruptive party”. Police said up to 30 youths were at the property at the time. While at the house, police arrested a 16-year-old Harkness boy in relation to the attempted robbery in Finchley Park Crescent. A second 16-year-old male, from Deer Park, was arrested in regards to criminal damage. Police were again called to Harmony Drive about 9am after reports a group of teenage girls were throwing rocks at cars parked in the street. Two girls, aged 16, were arrested at the scene. New hand of friendship A EDITORIAL prosthetic limb manufactured in Werribee will soon help change the life of a young boy in India. Not-for-profit charity Envision has joined Wyndham Rotary Club in the Envision Hands project, which turns recycled plastic bottle caps into prosthetic arms and hands. The initiative, a world-first, involves plastic from donated bottle caps being turned into material used to create parts for a custom-made artificial limb via a 3D printer. Project co-ordinator Joe Ferlazzo – along with Envision volunteers “3D genius� Ross Colquhoun and engineer Jules Perrin – have spent the past month creating a plastic hand-arm soon to be sent on its way to the nine-year-old. “What I enjoy is the fact of knowing that you’re going to help and make a difference to somebody,� Mr Ferlazzo said. He said the limb would enable the young boy to play more freely and even swim. Rotary Club of Wyndham member John Campbell and Sharad Sheth, from the Rotary Club of Jamnagar in the Indian state of Gujarat, are helping to co-ordinate the project.

‘Bit of good’ from tragedy By Goya Dmytryshchak The families of two childhood mates who died when their car veered off a freeway at Altona North before Christmas are raising money for a road trauma charity in a bid to make some good of the tragedy. Jason Gilham and Brad Dobney, both 27, had just been to dinner with friends in Caroline Springs and were driving on the Western Ring Road near the Geelong-bound Princes Freeway off-ramp when their vehicle became airborne and sank in a wetland on December 15. The pair couldn’t get out of the submerged car and police say they died holding each other. Their families have organised what they hope will be the first of many ‘Gillo/Nobbers Cup’ charity cricket matches at Williamstown Cricket Ground this month to raise money for Road Trauma Support Services Victoria. The two men had lived in Williamstown for most of their lives. Mr Gilham had just bought a house with his girlfriend in Hoppers Crossing, while Mr Dobney had recently moved to Sunshine. Mr Gilham played for Williamstown Cricket Club while Mr Dobney played for St John’s Cricket Club at Williamstown North and had been a coach with the Wyndham All Abilities Football and Cricket Club. Mr Gilham’s brother Brad said the match was aimed at raising awareness and to “do a little bit of good out of an unfortunate situation”. “We’re trying to get as many people as we can there to try and spread the message and obviously the more people that are there, the more money we can raise as well,” he said. Mr Gilham’s mother Leasa Gibson said the charity match to help others was in keeping with Jason’s spirit.

Glasses and chairs were thrown in a brawl at a Newport pub on Saturday afternoon that left one man hospitalised and two in police custody. The fight broke out in the smokers area of the Seagulls Nest Club, near the intersection of Mason Street and Melbourne Road, before spilling on to the footpath. One patron, Paul, who did not wish his last name to be used, said a man was knocked unconscious on the footpath by another man who had followed him outside from the smokers area. “Then I was standing at the bar and two different men came inside,” he said. “Next thing you know they’ve started a brawl defending their [unconscious] mate outside”. Paul and other patrons in the pub tried to escort the fighting men out of the pub as glasses and chairs were thrown. “One bloke left relatively peacefully,” he said. “The other one decided to destroy the joint on his way out the door.” Another witness saw one of the men trying to flee the scene on foot. Passer-by Victoria Paschalidis came to the scene after “hearing men screaming.” Emergency services arrived soon after 3pm. A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed a 44-year-old man had been taken to hospital for observation and scans. A 48-year-old from Braybrook and another man in his 40s, were taking into custody in relation to assault charges.

was taken aback when I saw the report that no time frame had been set for Majak Daw’s return to football. My initial reaction was: Are you serious? Who would even be thinking about that? We are talking about a young man’s life here. While football might be a very big part of his life – his profession, in fact – it’s a job and not the only one he will have in his lifetime. I am not underplaying the importance the support he has received and will receive from the North Melbourne Football Club and how crucial that might be in his recovery. The scenario behind that report is interesting and revealing about the invasive aspects of being an AFL footballer. Dom Tyson – a new recruit to North Melbourne – was asked about Majak’s recovery. Tyson has not yet played a game with North Melbourne, has not played with Majak, is not a close friend, is not a doctor. But in the insatiable quest for a sound bite, he was asked about the situation. How unfair is that? He probably should have deferred to a club official, but he

didn’t, giving an answer that was perfectly reasonable. Daw’s own open letter to the public addressed the playing issue, saying: “I hope to be back out there playing in the blue and white stripes soon.” Football is a multi-million dollar business and thousands make their livelihood through it, but it is still a game. It is a game that maybe helped Majak and many others assimilate to life in a new country and that is a good thing. Only Majak can decide what part it will play in his recovery. He has made his statement. Nothing more needs to be said. I will be surprised, though, if the media lets that be the case. There is no doubt the mental health issue is being taken more seriously. The “get over it” and “harden up” attitudes are being adjusted. It is very much an inexact science and problems are extremely difficult to identify from the outside, but those inside the black cloud know only too well it is real. Unlike a broken leg, the scars are not visible and the healing process is not in any textbook. ■

A mention hearing for a candidate in the 2016 Wyndham council election, Joh Bauch, has been adjourned until March 6. On Tuesday, Bauch attended the Werribee Magistrates Court in relation to two charges of making a false document and two charges of using a false document contrary to sections 83A(1) and 83A(2) of the Crimes Act 1958. Magistrate Urfa Masood adjourned the case at the request of Bauch’s lawyers.

A man caught driving at more than 60 kilometres over the speed limit in Truganina has had his car impounded. Police detected the driver travelling at 146/kmh in an 80/kmh zone of Hopkins Road about 1am last Tuesday.

The 20-year-old from Werribee has been caring for her mother, who has rheumatoid arthritis, since she was 14 and has put her career on hold to fulfill her carer duties. Real stories in safety push Maritime Safety Victoria and Life Saving Victoria are challenging boaters and paddlers to practise getting back on their boats and kayaks this boating season. The new safety campaign, ‘Prepare to survive: Know the five’, highlights the risks for boaters and paddlers of unexpectedly entering water and not being able to get back on their craft. Victorian boater David has shared his experience of cold shock as part of the new boating safety campaign. He jumped into the water to help release a rope in the propeller of a yacht he was sailing on. “I stopped breathing. My ability to think clearly disappeared. I couldn’t co-ordinate my muscles, and it was the crew members who had to haul me back on board again,” David said. Maritime safety director Rachel Gualano said clambering back onto a boat in wet clothing can be much harder than people expect. “Getting back on board involves a certain level of fitness and strength, especially when you are dealing with factors such as cold shock and conditions on the day,” Ms Gualano said. “You should never assume that because you could do it in calm, shallow water, or because you did it a few years ago, that you will always be able to do it.” The campaign encourages boaters and paddlers to know the weather, practise getting back on, carry a distress beacon, lock in a buddy plan and wear a life jacket. By Goya Dmytryshchak Seabrook’s Ellice Hatfull celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday, becoming Australia’s oldest known Girl Guide. Mrs Hatfull joined the Guides when she ws about 13 years old while growing up in Bethnal Green in London’s East End. The year she turned 21, World War II started. Mrs Hatfull led her own Guide patrol and tended to those in the bomb shelters. She was at the coalface of the Bethnall Green tube tragedy when 173 people died trying to escape what they thought was an air raid.

- Amanda Kelly “If we’d got our first-aid badges, we’d go to the air-raid shelters and comfort people, look after the people, make sure everything was OK,” Mrs Hatfull said. “Another job we had was, they used to collect old saucepans and tin foil and things like that, and we used to go round with a Costa barrow and collect all these bits and take it to the headquarters. They were all melted down for metal.” Mrs Hatfull said that during the bombings, the windows of her home would be often blown in or a door would fly off its hinges. “A month before the end of the war, a doodlebug fell right nearby and we got the blast of it all,” she said. “Right at the end of the war, the lot went. cup and that was still standing.” Mrs Hatfull and husband Stanley migrated to Australia in 1957. Their three daughters joined the Altona Guides in the 1960s and Mrs Hatfull became their unit leader for more than a decade. Mrs Hatfull celebrated her birthday with her

close-knit family, including four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Girl Guides Victoria chief executive Amanda Kelly congratulated Mrs Hatfull. “Ellice’s Guiding journey shows the ways that Guides can make a difference,” Ms Kelly said. “Once a Girl Guide, always a Girl Guide.”

Two men from Point Cook have been arrested after they were found with 89 abalone, 88 of which were undersized. The haul is roughly nine times the daily bag limit for abalone according to Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA). A call from a member of the public tipped off a fishery officer at Port Fairy. VFA state manager of operations Paul Shea said abalone were popular with recreational divers. “The vast majority of fishers do the right thing by fishing responsibly and sustainably, including staying within catch limits,” Mr Shea said. “Fisheries officers observed the two men take the 89 abalone in Lighthouse Bay, then seized the catch and snorkelling gear a short time later. “The pair will be charged with taking undersize abalone, exceeding the catch limit, taking abalone from the intertidal zone and using a sharp instrument.” The two men could face penalties of up to $40,000 and 18 months imprisonment, or both. In a separate incident the same week, another tip-off from the public helped officers apprehended three men and a woman from Sunshine in possession of 54 undersized abalone at Port Fairy. “The four people will receive infringements notices of more than $1000 each,” Mr Shea said. Tower of resistance for phone bid By Alesha Capone More than 150 people have signed a petition calling on Wyndham council to reject a proposal to install a 30 metre-high phone tower in a residential area of Hoppers Crossing. A company has applied to the council, seeking permission to lease part of a reserve at 238 Morris Road, to install the tower. The council has received 13 objections to the proposal. A Change.org petition against the tower’s installation, which began in November,

has attracted 157 signatures. The petition states the proposed tower would be just five metres from the nearest house. It also states studies have indicated that high power radio waves emitted by phone towers may cause health issues such as cancer, heart attacks, sleep disturbance and depression. Hoppers Crossing resident Kate Egan told Star Weekly she was against the tower. “It’s surrounded by thousands of homes and I’m worried about the impact of radiation,” she said.

“I’ve been living here for more than 25 years and I didn’t move into the area thinking there would be a phone tower installed.” Ms Egan said more community consultation was needed on the proposal. However, Wyndham council’s chief financial officer Binda Gokhale said the council published public notices on its website and in Star Weekly during August, asking for community feedback on the proposal. “Given that a planning permit is required to construct the proposed tower, the

telecommunications provider now needs to decide if they would like to proceed with the proposal and lodge a town planning permit application,” Ms Gokhale said. “If the permit was to be granted, council will then be required to make a final decision on granting a lease.” Ms Gokhale said if the telecommunications provider did submit a planning permit application, the council would install notification signs at the reserve and also contact nearby residents.

Western Treatment Plant manager Martin Bowles said Melbourne Water worked hard to maintain the plant as an environmentallyfriendly haven for migratory birds. “We are hoping that this work, that inspired this one little tufted duck to rock up, will make him tell all his friends,” Mr Bowles said. “When the rest of Australia is in drought, having this type of sanctuary is very important.” The plant is visited by up to 300 different bird species every year. It may sound quackers, but a small duck has become an unlikely celebrity at the Western Treatment Plant in Werribee. Birdwatchers and the media have been ducking and diving in an attempt to get a glimpse of the male tufted duck since it was spotted earlier this month. More than 1000 people have visited the plant since January 3, when two visiting American birdwatchers first saw the tufted duck. Birdlife Australia editor Sean Dooley said it was the first recorded sighting of a tufted duck in Australia. Tufted ducks usually migrate south in the European winter to India and southern China, but Mr Dooley said the one spotted in Werribee had “just kept flying” or “taken a wrong turn”. He said the tufted duck got its name from the distinctive feathers on its head. “The tuft is actually more the look of a plume at the back of its head – it’s kind of swept back,

Man jailed for violent assault By Alesha Capone A man who committed an aggravated burglary in Hoppers Crossing has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison. Father-of-six William Sadlier, 36, pleaded guilty in the County Court last month to aggravated burglary, contravening a family violence intervention order intending to cause harm, theft and unlawful assault with a weapon. The court heard that on January 24 last year,

Sadlier – armed with two butcher’s knives – gained entry to a house where his former partner was living with friends, a couple with children. The court heard Sadlier threatened his former partner with the knives and said; “If you don’t get up and come with me, I’ll kill you”. The 14-year-old daughter of the couple whom the woman was staying with heard noises and went to see what was happening. The girl ran toward Sadlier and shoved him.

When this occurred, his former partner grabbed the knives, cutting her hand in the process. As Sadlier went to leave the house by the front door, the 14-year-old girl yelled; “Mummy, mummy, there’s a man out there with knives”. The court heard Sadlier also stole his former partner’s mobile phone during the incident. Judge Michael O’Connell said Sadlier was arrested shortly afterwards and had been in custody since.

He said that Sadlier’s actions had “a profound effect” on his former partner. “At the time she feared for her life and even now, 11 months on from this incident, she constantly feels frightened and on edge,” Judge O’Connell said. He sentenced Sadlier to 30 months imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 15 months. Judge O’Connell said Sadlier’s 324 days in pre-sentence detention would count as time served.

Bees are amazing creatures – just ask Tarneit beekeeper Carmel Gerdsen. Ms Gerdsen said she became fascinated by the yellow-and-black insects in 2012 after discovering a beehive at a bungalow she was renting. Her landlord offered to send out an exterminator, but instead Ms Gerdsen asked if she could keep the hive once it was removed. She found a mentor in Sunshine beekeeper Angela Cassela, who taught her how to collect swarms. “I collected one swarm and another one, and the hunger grew and my love of bees grew,” she said. “The number of hives I had grew from one to five.” At the time, she was working at Yarraville West Primary School, with staff often asking her for honey. Ms Gerdsen said that inspired her to turn her hobby into a profession. She spent two seasons working for a beekeeper and went on to set up her own

Brothers Ahmed and Ibo Safi own the burger business, which has outlets in Hoppers Crossing and Campbellfield. “Mine and Ibo’s core belief is always about building up young people and giving back to the community,� Ahmed Safi said. Between the two eateries, they employ about 25 people, many of whom start aged 15 or 16. Before starting out at Burgies, some of the young employees have previously struggled to find jobs, experienced mental health issues or dealt with alcohol or drug addiction.

Runner looks to break barriers Andrew Lorenzo hopes that documenting his journey to become a better runner will provide inspiration for others. The Tarneit man is filming a documentary titled Breaking the Barrier Barrier, chronicling his efforts to complete a marathon in less than two hours and 40 minutes, within a two-year time frame. He has also launched a podcast of the same title, in which he speaks about running and interviews other runners, coaches and motivational speakers. “The whole point is not only to break a sub 2.40 (marathon) but to inspire people while I do it,” Mr Lorenzo said. “I think it’s just about spreading the message and the hope that someone listening may realise there is something more in themselves.” Mr Lorenzo said he decided that he wanted to tackle a marathon after completing a 10 kilometre Run Melbourne event last year. “That was the first-ever race I’d done,” he said. “It was just a rush, I crossed the finish line and it was awesome. “An hour later, I was like, ‘I’m doing a marathon’.” Mr Lorenzo completed his first marathon, last year’s Melbourne Marathon, with a time of 4 hours, 29 minutes and 21 seconds. He said he spent eight weeks training for the marathon, which had led to him making other lifestyle changes, such as eating more healthily. Mr Lorenzo has joined the Wynfit running group and started participating in the local park run. “That’s been the most rewarding thing, the running community is very supportive,” he said. The decision of the Board of Works to grant two permits for similar-sized shopping centres has thrown the future retail planning of Werribee shire into confusion. The Board granted permits for shopping centres of 10,000 square metres at Hoppers Crossing and Werribee.

The Point Cook and Laverton RAAF Bases will merge in an effort to save the Federal Government about $5 million in running costs and reduce personnel shortages. The announcement was made on Monday 16 January by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshall Ray Funnell.

Derrimut Road, Werribee, and Hopkins Road, Rockbank, should be upgraded to form a continuous, four-lane highway to help ease congestion on the Princes Freeway in the Wyndham area. Melbourne engineer Mr Peter Drew said last week his proposed upgrade would allow north-south traffic between the Princes and Hume freeways a significantly better and faster route than was presently available.

Residents of Werribee’s Jika Court have vowed to stop future large parties following the violent end to a house party attended by up to 250 guests last Thursday night. Party host Mark Marangoni, 18, promoted the party on his MySpace social networking site.

MY WYNDHAM Hoppers Crossing resident Teah Mogae is a GP and founder of Losika Writes, a company dedicated to improving bilingual pre-school education. She chats with Alesha Capone. What inspired you to start Lokisa Writes? I am from an African background and raising an African-Australian little boy. With our material, I am trying to improve language acquisition whilst also trying to instill some pride in him being who he is. My son just turned four – he is the reason I am doing this. When you are having a baby, and have a baby shower, people buy cards – but none in your native language. When you have a child, you want to introduce them to your language, but there aren’t many materials available in indigenous languages for people from some countries. For me, that is South Africa and Botswana. I asked my Mum to send me some books in our language, but there were not many. There were some, but mainly for older children, so I had to make my own books for younger children.

With the Lokisa Writes books, I wrote them and an illustrator did the artwork for me. I had to learn all about ISBNS and barcodes when I was publishing them. The books and learning materials are about animals and learning how to spell. I’m also making bilingual posters with names of faces and body parts. My son is now learning about that. In some of the posters, the boy has an afro and the girl has cornrows. In your head, with everything you see in the media – if you don’t see people like yourself – it can be hard to be proud of who you are. What is your plan for the future?

How did you get started?

The Canberra National Library and State Library of Victoria have copies of my books now. I’ve already introduced the books to my son’s childcare and now I’m working on books in other languages. I’m also planning on doing books and learning materials in colours, on

the theme of “at the home”, and building to storybooks for pre-school to early primary school students. I’m also hoping to do an e-book and phone and tablet apps. That is what I would do if I won the Lotto or if money grew on trees!

What do you enjoy about living in Wyndham? I have lived in Wyndham for the last 12 months and first moved for work. I enjoy working in Wyndham and the different cultures and places we get to explore and are exposed to.

SPORT Point Cook scrambles for a welcome win

Point Cook has taken out local bragging rights over Seabrook in one of the most thrilling games of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 season. Chasing 150 for victory in a one-dayer at Bruce Comben Reserve on Saturday, the premiership-contending Warriors made hard work of it, reaching the target with just one wicket to spare in the third last over. Seabrook, second last on the ladder and in danger of relegation, batted first to post a competitive 9-149 off its allotted 40 overs. The Saints’ charge was led by opener Walgama Eranga, who blasted 66, including five fours and a six. Dilip Sarkhell (16) and Andrew Hodgart (23) made handy contributions at the top of the order, but once they fell, the Saints began to crumble. An even bowling performance did the trick for Point Cook. Sarwan Kumar (2-15) and Jaden Edmund (2-33) were the Warriors multiple wicket takers, while three others had one apiece. Point Cook was coasting in reply on 2-80 and appeared to be headed for a comfortable win. However, one wicket sparked a domino effect and they lost 6-42 to be in all sorts of trouble at 8-122.

Late runs from Edmund, who posted 21, saved the day for the Warriors. The Warriors innings was underpinned by captain Brett Talbot with 47, James Petersen with 41 and Kumar 22. Point Cook will host Williamstown Imperials at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday, and Seabrook will be desperate for points to help them out of the relegation zone when they travel to West Newport. In division 2, Werribee Centrals had a thumping 77-run win over St Andrews Pascoe Vale at Galvin Park. The Centurions, visiting second-placed Newport-Digman in the next round, are still in the hunt for a top-two finish, so this will be a crucial game for both sides. In division 4, Wyndhamvale was thrashed by East Coburg to the tune of 92 runs on first innings at Wyndham Vale South Reserve. In CV women’s community cricket north west one day, Hoppers Crossing enjoyed a six-wicket win over Melbourne University at Hogans Road Reserve on Sunday. Tigers earn victory shot By Lance Jenkinson Werribee has batted to expectations on day one of its encounter with Malvern, giving itself every chance of extending its winning streak to six in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west first XI. Before a ball was bowled, the Tigers judged the ground conditions to be conducive to a par score of about 250. They did a little better than that, finishing with 252 off 80 overs. The well-constructed innings was slow and steady at the top before a lift in the run rate after tea. Tigers captain Tim O’Brien said smart batting was the key. “We knew if we had wickets in hand on a small ground, we could do some damage towards the back end of the innings,” he said. “We got 252. We probably would’ve liked a little bit more, but if we bowl well it should be enough for us.” The most pleasing aspect for Werribee on the day – and the season on the whole – was its ability to share the workload. The runs were spread out among the Tigers’ batting line-up again. “Everyone chipped in,” O’Brien said. “We’ve had pretty even performances all season. When someone has missed out, someone else has stepped up.” The anchor of the innings was the patient Andrew Ford, who made 37 off 129 balls. Ford has endured struggles in recent matches, so time in the middle was important for him. “He was a bit shaky early, but he got through a very tough period and then he started to look really solid,” O’Brien said. “He saw us out through to tea … a very good effort.” O’Brien was another starting to have a string a low scores, but he bounced back with 57 off 121 balls. His effort was needed after the Dean brothers, Shaun (20) and Matt (eight), were dismissed relatively cheaply. “I haven’t made too many runs the past few games, so I was definitely looking to get some,” O’Brien said. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The

values that sport can bring to our lives are best illustrated by two stories this week. The first is tragic and involves the loss of two young lives – Jason Gilham and Brad Dobney. The pair, both 27, died as the result of a motor vehicle accident in Altona just before Christmas. They were well known in local cricket and football circles through the Williamstown and St. Johns cricket clubs and the Willy CYMS and Wyndhamvale All Abilities football clubs. Jason’s father Scott is a life member of Williamstown Cricket Club and the Western Bulldogs. The two cricket clubs have organised a T20 match this Sunday with proceeds going to the Road Trauma Support Services. The teams are playing for the Gillo Nobbers Cup in memory of Jason and Brad. Gates open at 1pm with the game starting at 2pm. Hopefully this can become an annual event to honour the pair and to remind us all of how precious life is.

the recent announcement of new life members to the AFL, the 2018 recipient of the Jack Titus Award was also announced – Bill Hector from the Western Bulldogs. Bill marked his 50th year at the club and in that time his main job was timekeeper, a role he inherited from his father Norm who also clocked up (no pun intended) 50 years with the red, white and blue. When the AFL took the timekeeping duties away from clubs, Bill continued in that role but also filled many other roles at Whitten Oval, including property steward, senior doorman and match-day assistant. He is a life member of the Bulldogs. This latest acknowledgement is very fitting.

St Albans Gift is one of the major events on the local athletic calendar and well known king of the spike brigade Terry McGarity was pretty pleased with his charges after last weekend’s event. Megan McMahon continued her great form, winning the women’s open 120 metres, while Jody Richards took out the 300 metre race. The Pennell Reserve crew have been saluting a lot this summer with Nathan Burfitt winning at Rye. All are looking forward to their ‘home’ event the Maribyrnong Gift next Monday afternoon. The local athletics events have been growing in popularity in recent years. Dennis the menace as Giants’ bats fail to fire Williamstown Wolves’ import pitcher Dennis Neal is a Giant-killer. For the second time in a week, Neal left the Werribee Giants bamboozled to record wins in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2. Giants catcher Oliver Box could only tip his hat to Neal after he got the better of the Giants batters again in an 8-2 series-clinching win at Greenwich Reserve on Sunday. “He’s definitely got the chips against us,” Box said. “We struggled to get near him to be honest, so hopefully we don’t run into him again. “Our bats were just not up to it and we couldn’t make any adjustments. “He’s got a pretty nice curveball and a slider that was coming into us as well from a bit of a different angle we haven’t seen too much.” It has been a shaky start to the new year for Werribee. The Giants went into the mid-season break with a 14-1 record, appearing ready to

pounce on any slip-up from top-of-the-ladder Cheltenham. Since returning from the break, the Giants have one win from three matches against Williamstown, and look a bit off-kilter. “We don’t seem to have a good match up against Williamstown,” Box said. “They’ve put in a pretty good effort against us.” It was not all bad for Werribee on Sunday. The Giants only had one less hit (9-8) on the day, however their hits were sporadic. The Wolves had big innings in the fourth (four runs) and the eighth (three) to blow out the game. “We just couldn’t string the hits back-to-back in the batter’s box,” Box said. “We had guys on and he threw a few walks as well, so I’d hate to know how many people we left on base. “We just couldn’t get that big hit that we needed at the right time.”

There was also some solid pitching from Werribee starter Josh Lee and reliever Guillermo Salazar. While the numbers don’t back it up, Lee

pitched five innings to trail 5-1, while Salazar threw the final three innings for the concession of three runs. They were not well supported by their defence. The Giants were tagged for four errors, which hampered the efforts of the pitchers. “They weren’t big errors at big times, but they were kind of at the start of an inning that gave them a look-in and they used it to build from for the rest of the inning,” Box lamented. The bright spot offensively for Werribee was Andrew Christou. “He got an RBI single and then a big double, which kind of put us in a good position in the eighth, but we couldn’t convert again,” Box said. “He was definitely the standout in the box.” Werribee will try to recapture its form when it faces Doncaster Dragons in a three-game series starting on Thursday. All Manor of ambition By Lance Jenkinson The chance to create club history is one of the alluring factors for Dion Lawson as he takes over as player-coach of Manor Lakes. Lawson promised his former Trentham teammates – a number of whom are playing at the Storm – that he would link up with them again in his career. The 27-year-old felt the time was right and that Storm, playing in Western Region Football League division 2, had plenty of untapped potential. “The major thing that drew me there is the area is untouched,” Lawson said. “If you can bring a bit of success to that area, it’s just going to spike the interest of the community. “You’ll get better numbers attendance-wise and the juniors will start to filter though.” Lawson described creating that sort of history – including a first senior premiership – as “probably the biggest thing”. Lawson’s signature was huge for Manor Lakes. He will point the club in the right direction as a leader, on and off the field, and is still at the peak of his playing powers. Recruited from Apollo Bay, Lawson was runner-up in that club’s best-and-fairest last season. He is a multiple club best-and-fairest winner, has WRFL and GDFL team of the year honours and is a graduate of the Western Jets. But Lawson, who has plied his trade as an onballer, might not be the walk-up starter he usually is. He has brought in three top shelf recruits – midfielders Reece Miles and Dan Edwards and ruckman Daniel Jensen – to add to a Storm midfield, and already has reigning league best-and-fairest Nathan Montague in the mix. “That’s one thing I am looking forward to – seeing ‘Nata’ take his game to a new level,” Lawson said. “He’s going to be surrounded by A-grade talent, which will take a bit of pressure off him.” While Manor Lakes is only six years old as a football club, Lawson has been employed to oversee a slight change in culture. The Storm is keen to lift standards to ensure its younger players thrive. “I wasn’t around so I wasn’t aware of the playing culture,” he said. “They just wanted me to straighten it up a little bit in terms of giving it a bit of structure, a bit of direction on field, then off field try and create this culture for the young kids to strive to become better. “As everyone knows, your young kids are the future of your footy club. “The club’s expectation is … to tidy it up a bit on field and develop everyone.”

Lawson is ambitious. He will accept nothing short of a finals appearance by his team in his first season. “I want to play in premierships, I want to win – that’s the way I’m going about it,” he said.

“My expectation this year is at least finals. They weren’t too far off it last year, missing out on the last game of the season. “There’s a few areas that I think if we can improve on – it will skyrocket us.”

Hoppers has emerged victorious in the mid-table battle with Maribyrnong Park in Bowls Victoria division 2 at the Hoppers Club on Saturday. In a hard-fought contest, Hoppers won with an overall score of 83-74, despite splitting the rinks. The victory keeps Hoppers in the finals race – though its hopes would appear to to be merely mathematical, with five rounds to go and 62 points between the team and fourth spot. Hoppers will get a chance to tighten that margin when it travels to play Altona in its next match on February 2. In division 1, Werribee has shown encouraging form since the new year break. The Bees returned with a thumping win over Lalor and took it up to top-of-the-ladder Moonee Valley before eventually going down 85-64 away on Saturday. With the bottom three teams failing to obtain a point, the Bees stayed fourth last despite the loss.
