Property outlook ‘steady’ By Alesha Capone Wyndham house sales are likely to continue at a steady rate in the year ahead, according to real estate experts. Although there has been plenty of publicity about how Melbourne’s house values are tipped to fall this year, the Real Estate Institute of Victoria chief executive Gil King said that some sections of the market were still performing well, including Wyndham. “What the REIV has been saying for quite some time is that, although we are not seeing the inflated prices, strong auction clearance rates and intense competition of 2017, there are pockets of the property market that are still doing exceptionally well,” he said. “Wyndham has been one of the stars of the 2018 property market, with three of its suburbs – Wyndham Vale, Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook – all featuring in the top 20 [in Melbourne] list of the largest annual increase in their house price median at four, nine and 13 respectively.”

The median house price in Point Cook was recorded as $677,500 in September last year (a rise of 13 per cent compared to September, 2017), Hoppers Crossing’s median house price was $581,000 (up 14.9 per cent) and Tarneit’s was $548,500 (up 11.5 per cent), In Truganina, the median house price was $517,500 (up 14.4 per cent), Werribee $498,750 (a rise of 9.4 per cent) and Wyndham Vale $485,000 (up 15.7 per cent). Mr King said one of the reasons behind Wyndham’s strong results could be the fact that median house prices across the area were below the $750,000 cut-off to be eligible for the state government’s first home owners grant. YPA Wyndham City director Bassam Tofaili said it was too early to be making predictions about potential buyer behaviour for the next 12 months, but that he was still seeing “genuine buyers” at inspections. He said he believed Wyndham’s housing market would stay “steady and stablised” this year as long as people were “realistic” with their pricing strategies. “What we’re finding is that there is good demand for top-end properties and in Werribee there is also demand for commercial property,” he said. Mr Tofaili said that last year, he sold a 620-square-metre block in Cottrell Street, which is zoned as an activity centre, for $1.1 million.

As far as New Year’s resolutions go, Hanna Tran aimed high. The Laverton woman, who has been crowned Royal International Ms Australia, will head to Florida in July to vie for the world title in her division. “It started off as a New Year’s resolution at the start of last year,” the 25-year-old said. “I thought about jumping off a plane, scuba diving, swimming with the sharks at the aquarium – but I came to choose competing in an Australian national beauty pageant.” Ms Tran said she hoped to use her platform to found a charity. “I love doing charitable work,” she said. “I grew up with a family that instilled those values in me. “Coming from a Vietnamese and Chinese background, I’m coming from a country with a background that’s quite poor. “I’ve really got my eyes on starting my own charity to raise money for homeless people in Vietnam, and also to curb hunger as well. “I’m very lucky to have grown up here.” Wherever her reign takes her, Ms Tran said part of her heart belonged to Laverton. “I’ve lived in the same house in Laverton my whole life,” she said. “I grew up very close to my neighbours from different walks of life and different cultural backgrounds, and as a result I’ve made a lot of friends, learned a lot of different things from them. “I feel the sense of belonging in Laverton because there’s a lot of acceptance of cultural diversity – I’m really big on that.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Proactive policing reaps results By Alesha Capone The overall crime rate in Wyndham has increased slightly in 12 months, with sex offences, theft and drug use rising. According to the Victorian Crime Statistics Agency, there were 14,147 offences reported in Wyndham in the 12 months to September, 2018 compared to 14,105 the previous 12 months. Between September 2017 and September last year, Wyndham police dealt with: • 4932 theft offences (compared to 4629 in the previous 12 months).
• 571 drug use and possession offences (compared to 511 previously). • 396 stalking and harassment offences (compared to 366 previously). • 367 sexual offences (compared to 300 previously). • 220 dangerous and negligent acts endangering human life (compared to 166 previously). Reported assaults and related offences rose slightly, from 1238 offences to 1241. Robberies dropped slightly, from 152 offences down to 149 offences.
Crimes which decreased included homicides (from five to two offences), burglaries and break-and-enters (from 1506 offences to 1249 offences), property damage (from 1099 offences to 1047 offences) and arson (from 97 offences to 63 offences). Drug-dealing and trafficking crimes also fell from 84 offences to 77, while drug cultivating and manufacturing decreased from 60 offences to 55. Inspector Adrian Healy described the reduction in crimes such as burglaries and property damage as “a very good result”.
“That high-harm sort of offending is our main priority, so any reduction is great news,” he said. Inspector Healy said proactive policing, such as targeted operations and patrols, was one reason why some types of crimes were rising in Wyndham, including the number of people charged with drug use and possession. He said offenders carrying drugs often came to police attention when they were arrested for other matters, such as behaving in an anti-social manner in public or driving while alcohol or drug-affected.

It has been a busy summer for Stewy the Snake Catcher. The Wyndham-based reptile expert, whose real name is Stewart Gatt, said he was so busy across Christmas and the New Year he did not take any time off. Mr Gatt, who is contracted to remove snakes for Wyndham and Hobsons Bay councils, also attends call-outs at homes and businesses across Melbourne.
A fire destroyed the community centre at Ecoville Park in Tarneit last Thursday. CFA crews were called to the Cindia Crescent park just after 3pm. Truganina fire brigade captain Mark Hatton said the building was “completely gutted” by the blaze. He said the cause of the fire was still being investigated, but it was believed to be suspicious. No one was inside the building at the time of the blaze. Mr Hatton said most of the interior of the park building – which is known as a community centre – would be “unsalvageable”. The Truganina fire brigade’s pumper, tanker and forward command vehicle attended the fire, along with tankers from the Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook CFA units. Eltham CFA provided support. Ecoville Park has become known as a hot-spot for vandalism and anti-social behavior in the past few years. Police have patroled the site regularly since launching Operation Ecoville in November, 2017, to crack down on youth offending and anti-social behaviour. In January last year, Tarneit community members conducted a clean-up at the park, picking up rubbish and painting over graffiti. Ecoville Park is a private area managed by Strata Data on behalf of an owners’ corporation.

appy New Year. I hope you and your family enjoyed Christmas and the New Year and that 2019 is shaping as a good one for the people you care about. Pre-Christmas, I wrote that we were banging on about the same issues that have been plaguing us for years – traffic, infrastructure, growth, medical issues, police numbers, gangs. What if we all decided to focus on one thing and try and make an impact in 2019? It might be to contact your ward councillor to get a pothole fixed in your street, or maybe send your local member a personal letter with an idea for better multicultural assimilation. What about volunteering for meals on wheels, school crossing guard duty or your local sports club? We need to adjust the mindset of our entire community from negative to positive, while continuing to be realistic. Most things involve money but there are still a lot of things that can be achieved without spending a cent. Instead of just talking about change, let’s actually do something to affect
our lives that will be of benefit to the entire community. It appears to me that a lot of time is being spent making sure everyone has the right to this and that and just in case, let’s make sure there is access and everything else. Today’s society spends too much time worrying that everyone is catered for and in doing so we have made simple tasks complex and filled our lives with layer upon layer of bureaucracy. Let’s keep it simple and just get it done. My goal for 2019 is to do my best to change the way people perceive this city. The poo farm still hangs over our head but the biggest obstacle is getting people to stop and see what we have to offer. Admittedly, we need to be better at a lot of things, but what we have is still very impressive. Through my podcasts, columns, radio, TV and whatever other avenues I can use, I am going to encourage people to leave their preconceptions on the Geelong freeway and pop in for a look. A 47-year-old Kilmore woman has died after her motorcycle was involved in a collision with a car on the Princes Highway about 4pm on Friday. The car allegedly left the scene following the collision, which occurred near Forsyth Road. Police later arrested a 45-year-old man at a Wyndham Vale Certificate opportunity address in relation to the incident. He was interviewed and released pending further inquiries.
Impersonation charges
Police have charged a 52-year-old Winchelsea man with impersonating a police officer, handling stolen goods and possessing an imitation firearm. The man allegedly committed offences in the Geelong, Melton and Werribee areas last year. The man has been bailed to appear at the Werribee Magistrates Court on March 18.

Tarneit ‘dumping ground’ By Alesha Capone A Butterfly Boulevard resident has described the rubbish dumped on his street as “appalling”. The Tarneit man (who asked not to be named) contacted Star Weekly earlier this month, concerned about the illegal dumping of waste. The man said the problem appeared to be “getting out of hand” in his street and some other areas of Tarneit. He said rubbish had been dumped in Butterfly Boulevard for about 18 months, but had become worse after the recent opening of an extension of the street. When Star Weekly visited Butterfly Boulevard last week, there were piles of rubbish including mattresses, furniture, clothing, tyres, tree branches, bottles, discarded toys and clothing strewn across the nature strip. “We have noticed people have been going through it [the rubbish] after it is dumped, which makes it worse,” the man said. “Generally, the rubbish has been on the vacant blocks, but with people going through it, it’s spread out. And with temporary fencing going up, they dump it on the nature strip. “[It’s] an eyesore and is costing Wyndham ratepayers a significant amount to clean up,” he said. The resident reported the dumped rubbish to Wyndham council. Wyndham city operations acting director Richard Maugueret said the council had cleaned up the boulevard within four days of receiving seven complaints about the issue. Mr Maugueret said the council worked hard to reduce illegal rubbish dumping in the municipality and regularly ran campaigns to educate residents about the issue.

Thieves target boat sheds Police are appealing for information about a series of break-ins at Campbells Cove. Police are investigating “around five or six burglaries” across several nights at the Werribee South site during the Christmas period. Offenders forced entry to some of the boat sheds and beach boxes at the cove, stealing items inside the properties. Police said the break-ins were discovered after owners visited the site earlier this month. Police said as Campbells Cove was relatively isolated, often no one was around to report the break-ins when they occurred. Wyndham police have since increased patrols in the area. A burglar made himself at home during a break-in at a Laverton house on January 4. Investigators said a man entered the Robertson Crescent property about 11am. Once inside the man washed his clothes, had a shower and stole food from the premises. The man fled the scene when a resident of the house came home. No one was injured during the incident. Rose blooms for big day By Alesha Capone
Rose Dawson fulfilled a life-long ambition when she celebrated her 100th birthday last month. “I always wanted to live to 100, I was hoping I would,” she said. Mrs Dawson, who was born on December 29, 1918, lives at Manor Court Werribee Aged Care. Residents joined Mrs Dawson’s family members to present her with balloons and flowers for the occasion.
When asked the secret to living a long life, Mrs Dawson said she had “always been healthy” despite suffering typhoid during her childhood. “I’ve never smoked or drunk, it makes a difference,” she said. Mrs Dawson said she was born in Port Melbourne, and had four brothers and sisters. She said one of her biggest achievements was travelling solo around the world for eight months, before she turned 20. Back in Australia, she worked as a tobacco
stripper at British American Tobacco, married her late husband John and ran a milkbar in Essex Street, Footscray. “I’m so happy with the life I led – I’ve had a good life, I’ve no complaints,” Mrs Dawson said. Mrs Dawson, who barracks for the Sydney Swans, said times had changed since she was a young woman. “Everything these days is so dear – you have to work hard to pay for everything, including a house,” she said.
Firefighters from several brigades attended a house fire in Werribee South last Wednesday evening. Werribee CFA’s Fourth Lieutenant Brett Packer said his brigade was called to the Duncans Road blaze just before 6pm. The north side of the property was already “well involved” in the fire when firefighters arrived. “It took around a hard 40 minutes to get the fire under control,” Fourth Lieutenant Packer said. A number of resources were called to assist with controlling the blaze, including brigades from Melton. “There were 21 trucks and support vehicles,” Fourth Lieutenant Packer said. “It was a combined effort between the MFB and CFA.” Fourth Lieutenant Packer said a fire investigator attended the scene of the blaze last Thursday. Investigations are ongoing. “We’d like to thank all the firefighters who came to help us out, ambulance, police and Wyndham council,” he said. Paramedics took a Werribee firefighter to hospital after the blaze as a precautionary measure. While all local CFA crews attended the Werribee South fire a pumper from Diamond Creek visited Wyndham to help with other emergencies in the area. Alesha Capone

Memory of tragic fires lives on By Joanna Catalano Tuesday, January 8, 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the devastating Little River bushfires of 1969. On that day, 230 fires burned across Victoria. Twenty one of those, including fires in Little River, Lara, Daylesford, Bulgana, Yea, Darraweit Guim, Kangaroo Flat and Korong Vale, were deemed serious. More than 250,000 hectares, 230 homes and 12,000 head of livestock were destroyed. Of the 21 deaths that day, 18 were at Lara, 17 of those were motorists who died on the Princes Highway as they left their cars in dense smoke to run from the fire. Terry Hedt AFSM, is the captain of Little River Fire Brigade. On the day of the 1969 fires he was a member of the brigade that fought the fires in Little River and Lara. He recounted his experience on the day of the 1969 fires to the CFA. “Apart from the heat and smoke, we had to contend with the severe dust storm blown up by the strong winds. I covered my eyes with one hand and peeked between a couple of fingers every now and then to see where I was spraying the water. It was a tough few minutes but we put the fire out enough to drive over the bridge to proceed to Lara,� he said. “Upon arriving at Little River, we methodically checked all the buildings. Churches and homes there had all been spared by the flames. Only my neighbour’s cypress hedge was burning and we helped extinguish it with his help. “We spent the rest of the day checking properties and extinguishing anything still burning. The landscape was littered with power poles and fences that had been flattened by the flames. The ground was blackened as far as our

honour to remember those who lost their lives, families, homes, and their livelihoods. “We honour the service of those brigade members who responded, battling extreme conditions to save lives and property,� he said. Mr Hedt has his own way of remembering the
fires. “I now own the property where the Lara fire started. I have made a large commemorative marker stone that will remain on my property so future generations can remember this tragic event which had such a big impact on the Lara and Little River areas,� he said.

Top marks for courage By Alesha Capone Truganina teenager Sameer Khan is hoping to become a doctor after overcoming a serious illness to achieve outstanding VCE results. The 18-year-old, who completed year 12 at Werribee Secondary College last year, achieved an ATAR score of 99.45 (out of a possible 99.95). Mr Khan said he had been offered several university scholarships and was hoping to study medicine at Monash University. “I have always wanted to be a doctor, but my experience of being in hospital intensified it,” he said. At the end of year 10, Mr Khan developed Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. The rare disorder caused much of Mr Khan’s skin to blister and peel, forming “erosions” resembling severe burns to his arms and torso. He was admitted to the ICU of the Royal Children’s Hospital, where he was placed on life support and spent two weeks in a coma. He underwent two surgeries, one of which lasted eight hours, and spent a week wrapped in a full-body bandage as his skin healed. Mr Khan said he had become more determined to experience all life has to offer. At Werribee Secondary last year he was a house captain, chief editor of the student newspaper, vice-captain of the college cricket team and also played cricket for Altona North. He said that his friends and family, including his younger sister Sazia, had been a “great support” during his illness and VCE studies. He also said that “a lot of credit” for his VCE success belonged to two of his teachers, Robert Campbell and Regina Miller. Fellow student Mohammad Naghdi – who achieved an ATAR score of 99.9 – was also a great support, along with friends Navid and Tanzin.
Sports hub plan for Point Cook Wyndham council has endorsed a draft master plan for Bensonhurst Parade Reserve in Point Cook. The council’s sports development portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said the draft plan has been prepared to guide the potential future development of the reserve. “The Bensonhurst Parade Reserve has the potential to be one of the most loved sporting hubs in Wyndham,” he said. “The draft master plan lays out a vision for it that includes four soccer fields, three cricket fields, four tennis courts with lighting, four cricket nets and a pavilion that can be used by multiple sports clubs.” The draft master plan will be placed on public exhibition until Friday, January 25. “It’s exciting to see this project get to this stage and I encourage everyone to check out the draft master plan and have their say on it,” Cr Maynard said. “The Bensonhurst Parade Reserve is set to be a home for a range of different sports that will support diverse opportunities for people of different ages, genders, cultures and abilities.” The Draft Bensonhurst Parade Reserve Point Cook Master Plan can be viewed on council’s online engagement platform, The Loop, by visiting www. theloop.wyndham.vic.gov.au Joanna Catalano

Mercy’s local injection By Alesha Capone The new director of surgery at Werribee Mercy Hospital is a familiar face to many people in the Wyndham community. Iain Skinner has lived in the municipality since 1973. Mr Skinner’s family moved to the area when he was a child, and he attended Glen Devon Primary School and Werribee High School (now Werribee Secondary College). Since completing his surgical training and colorectal fellowship in 2001, he has been practicing as a specialist colorectal surgeon at public and private hospitals in the west. This has included working as a public appointment at Werribee Mercy for the past 16 years. Mr Skinner said that he had seen the hospital transform from a low complexity, medical, surgical and maternity hospital to a state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit (ICU), including six new operating theatres and a surgical ward built last year. Mr Skinner said he was “incredibly excited about, and honoured by” the opportunity to lead development of Werribee Mercy’s surgery department in his new role. “Since the opening of the expanded services we have seen the hospital equipped with an ICU the equal of any in the state,” he said. Mr Skinner recently hosted a Colonoscopy Leaders’ Update, run as part of the National Endoscopy Training Initiative, showcasing new integrated audio-visual systems built into the Werribee Mercy theatres. Mercy Health chief executive of health services Adjunct Professor Linda Mellors said she was thrilled to welcome Mr Skinner into his new position. “Mr Skinner is a passionate surgeon and a great advocate for the local community,” Adjunct Professor Mellors said.

A not-for-profit organisation, which aims to make a difference in the lives of young people, started out seven years ago in a Tarneit garage. Chris Aho and Marcell Putaura started the Iron Armour Academy (IAA) to give youths a place to exercise and be mentored. Mr Aho, who played for the New Zealand under-19s and the Tonga A rugby international team, and Mr Putaura, who played top-level rugby and rugby league in Queensland, understood the pressures young people faced. “For us, it’s about paying it forward – giving back to others who helped us,” he said. Four years ago, they both quit their full-time jobs to focus on the academy. Since then, the IAA has worked with more than 6000 young people.

New focus for Marlene Marlene Boulos, a Specsavers Point Cook graduate optometrist, recently travelled to Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberly Region of Western Australia to help in the sight-restoring work of Lions Outback Vision. She was selected from applicants across Australia and New Zealand to work with The Fred Hollows Foundation and the Lions Eye Institute team, helping with outreach activities. “Working with Indigenous communities has been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” Marlene said. “The highlight of the trip for me was learning more about Indigenous culture, seeing how respectful and kind the communities were of us and of each other.
“It was alarming to witness the amount of care still required in these rural areas.” Gabi Hollows, founding director of The Fred Hollows Foundation, said the foundation was honored to have had Specsavers optometrists working alongside their local teams. “Trips like this are invaluable in working towards our shared vision of access to quality eye care around the world,” she said. Marlene, and fellow staff members from Point Cook Specsavers, will be doing another outreach program in March. They will also be dispensing recycled glasses collected through a Specsavers glasses recycling program.

Busy bay watch season By Alesha Capone Volunteers from the Werribee Coast Guard have been busy rescuing sinking sailors and flailing fishermen this summer. The Werribee chapter of the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association (also known as VF10, or Victorian Flotilla 10) provides marine search and rescue services to part of Port Phillip Bay, which includes responding to calls from Water Police. Flotilla commander Bruce Lawrence described the Christmas and New Year period as “hectic” for volunteers, with some crew members putting in up to 20 hours a week. He said the volunteers had been called out to one or two jobs on most Saturdays and Sundays, plus more during the week. Just one call-out can involve the VF10 boat travelling hundreds of kilometres and spending hours on the water. Mr Lawrence said during the holiday period, the boat had travelled 100 “engine hours”, which is equal to the distance most boats cover in 12 to 18 months. He said during December and early January, the Werribee Coast Guard had assisted about 40 people. Recent jobs involved the crew towing a yacht from Geelong to Williamstown, another involved rescuing a fisherman who found himself in peril near Geelong. “There was one boat that lost its engine, which we had to tow all the way to Williamstown,” Mr Lawrence said. He said the volunteers raised about a third of their funding every year, about $10,000 to $15,000, through fundraising and sponsorship to keep the VF10 afloat. Details: www.coastguard.com.au

Melbourne Water collaborated with Truganina South Primary School and local artists Bryan Itch, Rich Keville and Benzo to create a new mural in Truganina. The mural, which is across from Truganina South Primary School, features the endangered growling grass frog and is aimed at raising community awareness of the local species. Melbourne Water funded the project as part of its Frog Census program. Truganina South Primary School visual arts teacher Gennivieve Collier said the project has encouraged the pupils to drive change in their community. “The students have enjoyed learning about frogs and the important role they play in our sustainable future,” she said. A heritage-listed homestead in Little River, built more than a century ago, is on the market. Mount Rothwell homestead was constructed in 1873 for Robert Chirnside, nephew of the famous Thomas and Andrew Chirnside from Werribee Park. The Italianate bluestone residence, which has 25 rooms, is set on about 88 hectares. The stately house, which is located at 25 Mount Rothwell Road, has ceilings and walls hand-painted by American artist Clay Beeler. A director from Abercromby’s Real Estate in Armadale, Jock Langley, said the homestead had featured in several films, including the 2003 movie Ned Kelly Kelly, which starred Heath Ledger and Orlando Bloom. Mr Langley said Abercromby’s was taking offers of between $3.3 million to $3.6 million for the homestead, with the property attracting interest from Melbourne, interstate and overseas. “The expatriate community have been looking at it,” he said. “It’s quite extraordinary – being a historic property, it’s got some unique character and you don’t really realise it until you walk through.” Mr Langley said that the homestead included views of the You Yangs, the Dandenong and Brisbane ranges and Melbourne CBD. The property’s grounds include a four-bedroom weatherboard caretaker’s dwelling, a shearing shed, horse paddocks and stables, silos, a dressage arena and a bore-fed dam. The Victorian Heritage Register says that Mount Rothwell Homestead “is of architectural and historic significance to Victoria”.

As many as 75 polocrosse horses and riders will parade through Watton Street, Werribee, on Saturday as an introduction to a polocrosse tournament at the racecourse over the weekend. It will be Werribee Polocrosse Club’s first weekend tournament at the racecourse venue and has attracted polocrosse teams from all over Victoria and interstate.
Criminal charges may be laid against the man who allegedly threatened to set fire to himself and the Food Research Institute in Werribee on Wednesday 4 January. Werribee CIB interviewed the man throughout most of last Monday and will proceed by summons with the matter.
Land at Melbourne Water’s treatment plant in Farm Road, Werribee, should be redeveloped for future housing, a report prepared by the State Government’s Department of Infrastructure recommends. The report, Residential Redevelopment in Melbourne, states land at the sewage treatment plant could provide about 2300 housing sites.

MY WYNDHAM Lisa Field is the community engagement and fundraising manager of the Werribee Hospital Foundation. She is passionate about the environment and is the founder of the Love Our Street 3030 group. She chats with Alesha Capone.
Do you have a local spot which is your favourite place to visit? The Werribee River is my favourite place. I used to walk my dog along the river every morning. I’d get to meet all the other walkers and dog owners. My dog has passed on, but I now pick up rubbish along the river, as well as just go and enjoy the serenity. If I’m really lucky, I’ll come across a platypus one day. What do you enjoy about your role at the Werribee Hospital Foundation? It is wonderful to support our local public hospital. I enjoy meeting such a diverse range of people in the community as I seek to create partnerships and opportunities to promote and fundraise for Werribee Mercy Hospital. The community are incredibly supportive of the expansion of services at Werribee Mercy Hospital. What are some of the main projects you are working on for the foundation? I’m recruiting people to become Hospital Hosts and to run fundraisers in their home, workplace, social or sporting club. I’m looking to recruit schools to create a Coin Chain, where
students collect, count, measure and calculate the coins they collect. With a combined Wyndham-wide chain, we might just measure up to a world record! I’m also seeking to establish a Werribee Hospital Auxiliary, the traditional method to engage and promote the community fundraising aspects of the foundation. You’re also passionate about the environment? With the support of Werribee River Association and Beach Patrol Australia, I started a clean-up group called Love Our Street 3030 in May last year. We meet each month, and since we have started, we have collected over half a ton of litter. We also advocate for less single-use plastic and a deposit container scheme. When we cleaned up at Werribee train station, we collected approximately 6000 cigarette butts each time. This was absolutely shocking. So we let people know that we can do better and would like to help improve the site’s presentation, by planting a garden. Are there any other ways in which you’re involved in the community? A few years ago, I set up a Facebook group called Transition Wyndham that is all about supporting sustainable development, living local, growing your own food, building resilience and reducing our carbon footprint. It has led to lots of lovely activities and positive social connections. I’ve also helped submit a number of events in the council’s Green Living Series, including the Wyndham Food & Garden Trail on Sunday, February 3. I also do ceramics at Werribee Men’s Shed. We all need creative outlets.

How long have you lived in Wyndham? Since 2005. I live in Werribee, close to the Werribee River and only a 15-minute walk into the centre of Werribee. I appreciate my neighbours and friends in the area, people I have met through shared interests in growing foods, sharing goods, reducing waste and keeping our environment clean. I like the fact that when I run out of coffee, or need a drill, I can call on a neighbour.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir revisits an old favourite On a blazing hot Melbourne day, is there any better place to be than luxuriating in the AC-cooled confines of Phi Phi? Nope. It’s been a while since we’ve been here for a feed. The place has had a bit of a makeover and there’s some new faces around. But all else appears much the same – including the superb food. We’re in the house to enjoy it with Brimbank councillors Duyen Anh Pham and Virginia Tachos. We play it safe when ordering – nothing in the way of boundary testing for us during this lunch. But what we do order is AMAZING. Virginia originally wanted Vietnamese coleslaw, but is delighted nevertheless with the rare beef salad with lemon juice ($25). More in a Thai style than Vietnamese, it’s just as tangy as expected and turbocharged with all sorts of greenery. The meat is rare, as promised, and excellent. Good thing we ordered the small version of the combination fried rice ($10), as it’s very generous. It’s also momentously fluffy and studded with many plump and good-sized prawns. This lives on another planet from fried rice of meh bain marie infamy. Silky tofu done in salt and pepper style ($14) is Bennie’s choice – and it doesn’t disappoint. The tofu chunks are profoundly plump and delicious.

A beaut day in Werribee Werribee City Centre will be a hive of activity later this month, with fireworks, live music, food trucks, rides and more on offer for Australia Day. Wyndham deputy mayor and tourism and major events portfolio holder John Gibbons said the Australia Day festivities would be fun for the whole family.
FURTHER INFORMATION Parking and traffic: Parking is available for free within a short walk of the event site. Accessible parking is also available. Management will be in place to keep traffic moving as well as possible. However due to the popularity of this event, some delays are expected. Carpark suggestions are as follows:

Pop goes big-time fun at station place Live music, outdoor cinema, community classes, exciting workshops and more are on their way to Werribee City Centre from January 18 – February 24 for the return of the Pop-Up Park. Kate Ceberano will open the free Friday Night Live concert series, with shows to follow by the winner of The Voice 2018, Sam Perry, Nicky Bomba’s Bustamento, bluesman Ash Grunwald, folk duo The Audreys and legendary rockers the Choir Boys. Kicking off the weekend has never looked better, with the live music being topped off with a licensed bar at Station Place and plenty of options for dinner under the stars. DR: I’m pretty damn good! I’ve been cooking for myself for a long time. I was born in India, and Mum and Dad, you know, they worked quite a lot. We had eight kids. We had servants. One of them was an amazing chef. He taught me everything he knew, about curries and spices and stuff. FB: What is your signature dish? DR: I’m a curry man. I love cooking curries … you name it, I can cook it. I learnt a lot of coconut-based curries. Curries aren’t simple. Curries can be very, very exotic and different from each other. FB: What sort of food did you eat when you were growing up? DR: Oh, curry. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was curry. FB: You have a Japanese teppanyaki grill at home. DR: Everybody needs to have a teppanyaki grill at home that can seat 14 people. After the Indian thing, I sort of fell in love with Japan. I lived in Japan for a little while and studied Japanese cooking … I love cooking Japanese food now, too.
I hope everyone has recovered from the festival of food that is Christmas. I know a lot of us have Christmas food traditions. Since our son was born, mine has always been gingerbread houses, though certainly not the traditional kind. Baking, cutting out and then gluing together slabs of gingerbread with royal icing takes a special type of skill and patience I don’t really possess. Plus, our son would prefer chocolate cake over gingerbread any day, so that is what I give him. I call it my gingerbread cake house. I bake two square chocolate cakes I’m the first to admit that I use a packet mix (Betty Crocker’s chocolate fudge cake mix being my go-to choice) and cut one into four even triangles. This becomes the “roof” of my house. I sandwich the triangles together with chocolate icing (the store-bought kind is fine if you’re pressed for time) and stack them on top of the other cake. Then it’s just a matter of slathering in icing and decorating with any kind of lollies you fancy. Obviously, Freckles on the roof hide any imperfections! It looks very home-made – because it is! My son loves them and my hubby thoroughly enjoys the cake, too, with lashings of Connoisseur Murray River Salted Caramel ice-cream with hazelnuts! Here’s to a wonderful 2019. 2. Inspect properties in your neighbourhood You’ll want to physically inspect properties so you can see how your home compares with the stock available to buyers. Matt Walther of ClearHome, a company that helps clients get their property ready for sale or rent, says this is the best way for would-be vendors to learn about the competition. “Have a look at what else is on the market, because ideally you’ll want your property to match or exceed the standard of what’s already available,” he says. 3. Get a pest and building inspection A pest and building inspection report will highlight any major issues with your property and give you the option to deal with these before your sales campaign.

1. Research the market The property market can be a fickle beast, so it’s important to have a good understanding of what’s happening in your area before you list your house for sale. Mark Newell, director of housePro, a company that guides clients through the process of buying and selling property, says one of the easiest ways to get a handle on your local market is to observe at least one campaign cycle – a minimum of six to eight weeks. Knowledge is everything. You can also use online tools such as Home Price Guide to analyse recent sales data.
4. Clean and declutter Decluttering comes hand-in-hand with moving house, so if you’re thinking seriously about selling there’s no better prompt to get rid of unwanted belongings. “When it comes to selling, less is more,” says Walther. “Because vendors may have lived in it for so long they want to show off what the home
has given to them, but it’s irrelevant to what a buyer wants.” 5. Improve and enhance When deciding how much money and energy to throw at your home before selling, Walther suggests asking yourself the question: “Why would people not want to buy my home?”
“You want to find out what the deal-breaker is,” he says. “Most vendors are on a budget, so they need to use their money effectively. Tackle the deal-breakers first and the rest comes second. “The walls and ceiling make up 90 per cent of what you’re looking at in a property, so if you repaint throughout it basically looks new,” Newell says.

SPORT Werribee midfield looks the goods Werribee Football Club is heading into the new year with enviable midfield depth. The recruitment of former AFL player Michael Barlow, the return from injury of three-time club champion Matt Hanson and the re-signings of Tom Gribble and Joe Maishman will mean Werribee can compete with any other midfield in the Victorian Football League. Fresh contracts for Gribble, who will be in his sixth year at Werribee, and Maishman, who will enter his fifth, were secured last week. Gribble is one of the club’s most experienced players with 73 senior VFL games under his belt – 69 with Werribee and four with Geelong. The 24-year-old was a ball magnet last season, relishing the chance to play a leading role in a stand-alone side. Werribee football operations manager Stuart Balloch said Gribble was hitting a “sweet spot”. “Tom has 70-odd games under his belt now and has picked up another team of the year selection,” Balloch said.

“He really stepped up in the absence of Matt Hanson last year, so when you put Matt back into the side and throw Mick Barlow into the mix, that midfield group starts to look pretty formidable.” Maishman is another player with plenty of experience, having played 56 VFL games. The 22-year-old had his best season with Werribee
last year, featuring in all 18 games and running sixth in the club best-and-fairest. “He gives us a bit of speed through the midfield and certainly seemed to enjoy the chance to spend more time in the middle, so we’re excited to see what he can do this year,” Balloch said. Werribee has bolstered its defensive stocks with the signing of former Gold Coast Suns backman Max Spencer, 21, who played eight AFL games with the Suns over two seasons. A Queensland native, Spencer is keen to challenge himself interstate in a bid to get back on to an AFL list. “It’s good to have another opportunity to further my game and get outside of my comfort zone,” Spencer said. “Living at home your whole life and playing under the same colours your whole life, you can get a bit comfortable.” Defenders Dane McFarlane and Ryley Barrack have signed new deals with the club. Giants back and blue By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Giants hardly put a foot wrong in the first half of the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 season, going into the mid-season break flying high in second place. But the Giants might have got complacent over the festive period, because they returned on Sunday and looked nothing like the team that had dominated its first 15 games. Entering the run in to the finals, perhaps it was a good time for the Giants to get their wake-up call, which came in the form of a 3-1 defeat to Williamstown Wolves at President’s Park. Giants coach John Curnow was not happy with his side’s preparation in the lead-up to the match. “They enjoyed their break off a bit too much maybe and they weren’t ready to go,” he said. “I gave them the extended break, so they weren’t due back until the Tuesday before the game, but a lot of them didn’t get back until Thursday, if at all. “I asked them to put in a bit of work on their own. They’ve done a little bit, but it obviously wasn’t enough.” Werribee simply had no answer to Williamstown import pitcher Dennis Neal. The Giants could manage only four hits on a tough day in the batters box. Neal produced a wonderful display on the mound, pitching all nine innings and conceding just one run. “He threw the complete game,” Curnow said. “He mixed up his pitches OK and kept a few of our hitters off balance.” Werribee’s defence was not up to its usual standard. The Giants allowed eight hits, but at times the pitchers were left on an island to themselves. “Even out in the field we were pretty ordinary,” Curnow said. “We made some mistakes that we don’t normally make.” Werribee starting pitcher Josh Lee will be better for the outing. I want to start the year on a very positive note and say well done to the Hobsons Bay council, which came to the rescue of the National Jockey Trust charity cricket day and offered Williamstown Oval at a very modest rental charge. The charity T20 game is in its seventh year and has always been held in Caulfield at the local cricket ground. This year though, the council decided to jack the hire fee up to nearly $10,000. Yes, you read correctly. When the event started seven years ago $500 was considered enough, but it has been going up ever since. The jump this year was almost the death knell of the event. Luckily Hobsons Bay came to the rescue. Is there a more picturesque oval in Melbourne? As race caller Bryan Martin used to say, it is the only occupation where the ambulance follows you around while you do your work. ■ The event is Monday, January 21, from noon with a 1pm start for the T20 game. The jockeys’ team includes skipper Damien Oliver, Michelle Payne, Brett Prebble, Jamie Kah and Mark Zahra, while the All Stars boast Archie Thompson, Brendan Fevola, Matt Curmani, Stevie Payne and Gill McLachlan. There will be plenty of food and refreshments available, plus lots of other entertaining activities during the afternoon. ■ Yarraville Club Cricket Club finds itself in unfamiliar waters as 2019 begins, on the bottom of the VTCA Turner Shield ladder after a heavy loss to St Albans last weekend. It will be very interesting to see if this powerhouse can resurrect its season. In the local derby, Spotswood lost to Seddon and Sunshine United had a good win. In the subbies, Matt Dean has the hottest bat in the west, posting his second century of the season in Werribee’s win over Brighton. Adam Alifraco produced a terrific all round performance, scoring 58 and taking 2/13. Hoppers defeated Malvern and Williamstown took care of Taylors Lakes but Altona and Yarraville suffered losses. Special mention to Rhys Dodemaide who achieved a double hat-trick (all bowled) in Werribee’s 2nd XI game against Williamstown, finishing with figures of 5/22. Impressive.

Hoppers Crossing makes up lost ground Hoppers Crossing has enjoyed a happy start to the new year in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association action on Saturday. The Cats dusted off the cobwebs with a strong all-round effort to cruise to a seven-wicket victory over Malvern in their first game back from the mid-season break. Cats coach Greg Kennedy said it was important for his side to make up some of the ground lost in the standings prior to Christmas. “To have a nice clinical all-round performance is excellent,” he said. “We dropped a couple of points in December, so we’ve put that behind us now and we’re starting to make a push in 2019.” Fifth-placed Hoppers Crossing is now 12 points clear inside the top six. With a tough four rounds to go, there is still plenty of work for the Cats to do to book their ticket to the finals, but their destiny is in their own hands.
The Cats have a must-win game against bottom side Moorabbin in a two-dayer at Moorleigh Community Village Reserve starting on Saturday, before running the gauntlet against top three sides Werribee, Oakleigh and Caulfield in the lead-up to the finals. “This is really the final push, the business end,” Kennedy said. “You’ve just got to control what you can control and that’s your job.” Hoppers Crossing’s bowling unit shows no signs of rust as it restricted Malvern to 9-136 off 45 overs. Both pace and spin had success for the Cats, with new ball user Brett Smith charging in to take 3-25 before spinners Nick Keast (2-30) and Luke Goegan (1-22) completed the job. “The spinners were a big part of our game today, which is less usual at our place,” Kennedy said. “We had two spinners bowl 17 overs and took a combined 3-50. The quicks either side
of that did well too. It was just a really good performance with the ball and in the field.” Hoppers Crossing calmly plotted its run chase, passing the target with five overs to spare. The chase was led by Goegan, who finished with 50 not out. By no means was it a lone hand though with Keast (24), Jack Rhodes (25) and Trent Said (22 not out) making valuable contributions. In past seasons, Hoppers Crossing had a reputation as a side that struggled chasing small totals, but that appears to be a thing of the past. “The old Hoppers Crossing of two, three or four years ago would’ve sort of panicked,” Kennedy said. “Because of the effort with the ball and our new-found maturity with the bat, we rode it through.” Lance Jenkinson
Apps-olutely thrilled By Lance Jenkinson Brad Apps is grasping his opportunity in the Werribee first XI this season. After playing a key role in the Tigers’ second XI premiership in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association last summer, Apps was promoted to the firsts in round one and has not looked back. The 29-year-old puts his strong first half of the season down to “the luxury of not having too many niggles” in the pre-season and simply being a smarter bowler. “My stump line consistency is something I’ve prided myself on this year, instead of trying to take a wicket every ball,” he said. Apps thought last year’s second XI flag might have been the peak of his career at Werribee. After moving into a new home in Geelong West, the medium pacer seriously considered bidding farewell to Werribee. “I’ve just moved down to Geelong West, so I was considering, after last year’s success with the seconds premiership, to probably find a new cricket home down in Geelong somewhere,” Apps said. “After last year’s success and the group of people we had coming through, I thought I just want to still stick with it at Werribee.” The decision to stay has quickly paid dividends for Apps. His first two outings with the ball were a touch expensive, but he took wickets in those games to keep his spot in the side. Now settled in a new-ball partnership with Jonathan Burton, Apps is both economical and a key wicket taker for the Tigers with 16 scalps at an average of 15.4 in all formats this season. Having played first XI without success in three games in 2016-17 and a debut game in 2014-15, this was probably a last chance saloon for Apps to prove himself in top grade. “I’ve had a couple of goes before and I wasn’t as consistent as I would have liked to have been,” he said. “When you do get your chance, you’ve really got to grasp it with two hands and have a red-hot crack. “I’m a bit more experienced now and being a bit of an older head has put me in good stead.” While the drive from Geelong takes its toll some days, Apps is relishing his days at Werribee. He will get some respite when he begins training on Tuesday nights with Geelong’s Premier Cricket squad to cut down on travel. A former Hoppers Crossing player, Apps says Werribee is a great environment to be around with a brand new facility at Chirnside Park, eager youngsters in the lower XIs snapping at the heels of players in the higher grades to keep the pressure on and a first XI that looks on track to play in the finals. “The way we’re going this year just puts a smile on my face,” Apps said.

Dean ton tops in Tiger win Normal order has resumed in the new year for Werribee in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The third-placed Tigers kept up the pressure on the top two sides with a 29-run win over Brighton at Chirnside Park and opening batsman Matt Dean continued his assault on opposition bowling attacks. Dean (105) blasted his second century of the season to lead the Tigers to victory. Tigers skipper Tim O’Brien applauded Dean’s century. “He summed up the conditions really well, got himself in and pushed on to get himself a hundred, which set it up for us,” O’Brien said. Dean had a willing ally in Adam Alifraco. The pair combined for a match-winning partnership of 180 for the third wicket. Alifraco made 58 before he was run out. Werribee finished on 8-205 off 45 overs – an above par score in the conditions. “It wasn’t a wicket that was easy to score on,” O’Brien said. Werribee’s bowlers seemed intent on an early finish. Jonathan Burton removed the top three Brighton batsmen for a team-best 3-23. O’Brien did damage late, taking 3-46, while Alifraco nabbed 2-13. Isuzu SUV makes big impression By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring

Dealing, these days, mainly with SUVs that would run a mile rather than tackle tough terrain, it was good to get behind the wheel of a genuine off-road wagon in the shape of the Isuzu MU-X. While celebrating a decade of business in Australia, as well as noting feedback from local customers, Isuzu Ute Australia (IUA) has upgraded its D-Max utility and MU-X seven-seat sports utility vehicle to maintain growth in two of the most competitive market segments – one-tonne ute and large SUV. The D-Max ute has come in for most work, with cues being taken from its MU-X SUV mate. Both come in LS-M, LS-U and LS-T variants, the ute with an SX strain added. Manual or automatic versions are on offer with two or all-wheel drive. Prices start at $42,900, plus on-road costs, for the entry-level MU-X LS-M 4x2 auto and top out at $56,200 for the LS-T 4x4 auto. The latter was on test. Styling ‘Hold the chrome’ appears to be the mantra styling whizzes have worked with, the MU-X far from fleshed out with unnecessary tacky shiny bits. The frontal décor, for example, is limited to simple trapezoidal radiator surrounds with the Isuzu brand mark to the fore. The latest in hi-tech LED daytime running lights and bi-LED automatic levelling projector headlamps flank the stylish set-up, while out the back, extra-bright LED taillights help to keep the MU-X in plain sight of any other road user day or night. Summary While it may have come late to the large SUV party, the Isuzu MU-X continues to push its more expensive rivals with the latest upgrades across the range. Isuzu’s stock-in-trade diesel power and genuine off-road ability round out the advantages.
