Style makes a comeback A return to old-world glamour dominated the catwalk at the Werribee Cup’s Fashions on the Field at the weekend. Gentlemen suited up and ladies accessorised with hats and gloves for the competition, while little ones also got in on the act with fun designs. For the ladies, mid-length dresses with fuller skirts were a popular choice, as were pastel colours, off-the-shoulder designs paired with gloves, strappy heels and modern millinery. Werribee’s record deal By Alesha Capone A four-bedroom house in Werribee has sold for $2.752 million, setting a new record for the suburb. According to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria, the previous record for a single dwelling in Werribee was $1.4 million, paid for a four-bedroom house at 4 Ziema Court in November 2016. The new record was set by a property at 93 Princes Highway, owned by well-known artist Janet Knight. The house has three bathrooms, a sitting room with leadlight french doors and an
in-ground spa featuring mosaic tiling. Set on about 2685 square metres it also has a solar-heated pool, tennis court and landscaped gardens. Ms Knight said the house was built as a farmhouse in the mid-1950 and has both Coronation and Olympic bricks in its front façade. Hockingstuart Werribee Senior sales consultant Andrew Conte said the chance to sell such a “spectacular home” came along “once in a blue moon”. “It has 1950s-era Hollywood and Palm Springs glamour in the pool area,” he said. “It’s an oasis in the middle of Werribee.”
Mr Conte said there was interest from both private and commercial buyers, resulting in three potential purchasers who “fought” for the property. The record price defies recent data that shows the nation’s key property markets are facing their most challenging period in a decade. The Australian Bureau of Statistics yesterday reported capital city prices fell by 1.5 per cent in the three months to the end of September. The biggest fall was in Melbourne where prices dropped by 2.6 per cent. It was Melbourne’s toughest quarter since September 2008. with The Age

Pallas takes poll swing on board By Charlene Macaulay Werribee MP Tim Pallas is calling the election swing against him a “robust demonstration of democracy”. Despite a statewide overall swing to Labor at the election, Mr Pallas suffered an 11.1 per cent swing against him in the primary vote, achieving 45.41 per cent of first preferences. He finished on 52.12 per cent of the vote after the distribution of preferences, down 13 percentage points from his 2014 victory.
Independent Joe Garra, who ran for the first time, held 25.93 per cent of the vote after preferences, followed by the Liberals’ Gayle Murphy on 21.95 per cent. Mr Pallas said it was a great honour to be re-elected. “I never take these things for granted … I feel honoured to be able to give the best of my efforts to try and meet those expectations and aspirations of a growing community,” he said. “I think any swing that goes against you is a message that every politician should listen to.

“There’s a lot going on, we’re delivering a lot, but this is a community that … has great expectations and deservedly so.” Mr Pallas said his main priority in the coming term would be to implement all of Labor’s election commitments.
He said the government would get on with consulting the community about what the best design solutions were for the Werribee and Cottrell street level crossing removals. Mr Garra said he would continue to advocate for the needs of the community and would reconsider his options for the next election. “I was very pleased with a short campaign and very limited spend to get 20 per cent of the voters voting for me, I was really quite humbled by that,” he said.

Police will be out in force on Wyndham roads this silly season in a concerted bid to reduce road trauma over the Christmas and New Year period. Westgate Highway Patrol and other policing units will flood major arterial roads in Wyndham and across the state and will set up speed cameras and booze buses in identified speed and high collision hot spots as part of Operation Roadwise, which begins this Friday and will run until January 6. Police are particularly keen to avoid crashes such as last year’s high-speed head-on collision in Point Cook on Christmas Eve which claimed three lives. Sergeant Marty Wallace from Westgate Highway Patrol said road trauma wasn’t just about those who died, it also greatly affected family and friends, and emergency services workers who attend the scenes of crashes and deliver the devastating news to loved ones. Sergeant Wallace said police would be targeting drivers leaving end-of-year work functions. “During this road policing operation, Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma – speed, alcohol and drug impairment, mobile phones, fatigue and [not wearing] seatbelts.” Last year, more than 650 offences were detected, with police nabbing 189 drivers for using their mobile phone while behind the wheel and also detected 107 seatbelt offences, 84 speeding offences, 40 drivers who disobeyed road signs or traffic lights, 34 drink drivers and four drug drivers, among other offences. Kevin Hillier ponders why Christmas feels different
L
ike a knife-wielding zombie, Christmas has snuck up on me this year. What about you? I am not sure if it is because our house no longer has the Santa Claus factor to deal with. Spoiler alert – all our family now knows Santa is a highly paid executive of the credit card planet and lives in the land of the never-never pay it off people. It is mid-December – yet it does not feel like the festive season. I wonder if that is because those lines between retail seasons have become as blurry as the ones between sporting seasons. The Werribee Cup at the weekend made me think early November, not December. Without getting into a climate change debate of epic proportions, the transition from spring to summer has hardly been noticeable except for a few days of heat. I still have plenty of use for my windcheaters and jackets. There are a sprinkling of houses with extravagant lighting displays, but that tradition seems to have become a victim of rising power bills. Who can blame even the most fervent Christmas fan for trimming back?
The supermarket promotional pop-ups and mini-collectibles have not given me a whiff of frankincense or the taste for candy canes. You could once rely on the seasonal finish of your favourite television or radio shows to signal the coming of the holidays, but they all wind up so early these days that it doesn’t cause a blip on the yuletide radar. I am happy to say Santa does not seem to have lost his appeal, judging by the reaction I saw at the A-League last weekend. The kids were very happy to see him – and the lollies he was handing out. As we embrace more politically correct wording in advertising, mentions of Christmas and the like are fast disappearing. ’Tis the season to be jolly, all right – jolly careful what you say, who you say it to and what they were thinking when you said it. I think that correspondence course in mind-reading and social etiquette for the new millennium I saw advertised might be the go for my present to myself for this year. Happy holiday, indeed! â– â–

A 26-year-old Tarneit man has been charged with offences including theft of a motor bike, riding while disqualified, possession and trafficking a drug of dependence, possessing a controlled weapon and resisting arrest. A 19-year-old Truganina man has been charged with assaulting police and making threats to kill after an alleged brawl in St Kilda on November 1. Police probe Little River blaze By Alesha Capone Police are investigating a fire that burned about 1270 hectares of land in Little River and surrounds on Friday. The blaze was reported to the CFA just before 11.45am and an evacuation warning was issued soon afterwards for residents in the Mambourin and Manor areas. About 100 firefighters, 50 fire trucks and several aircraft were deployed to combat the blaze, which originally started as two grassfires
on either side of Edgars Road. The fire was brought under control on Friday evening at a site south-east of the Princes Freeway. A Victoria Police statement released on Monday, stated investigators believed the fire could have been caused by machinery, which has since been seized to be examined. A 58-year-old Little River man was interviewed following the fire and was released pending further inquiries. “Police are confident there will be no further incidents involving his machinery and there
are no other persons involved,” the statement read. The investigation is ongoing. At least one shed was destroyed and a shipping container and a car were damaged. The fire caused V/Line train services on the Geelong line to be temporarily suspended on Friday afternoon. Authorities also closed Edgars Road from the corner of You Yangs Road, Kirks Bridge Road from the corner of Farrars Road, and Bulban Road from the corner of Newtons Road. Little River Fire Brigade posted a message
on its Facebook page thanking members and other CFA brigades who helped to fight the fire. “For our little brigade, although stretched, we are very happy there were no firefighters hurt, no community members were injured,” the message stated. “Thanks to the residents who remained calm … and a further thanks to those with well-prepared properties – you have no idea how much that helped.” Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. – with The Age
SES stalwarts honoured Laurie Russell and Gerry Greenwood have each spent more than 35 years volunteering for the Wyndham SES. The founding members were presented with certificates of appreciation for their years of service, at the SES Wyndham Service Awards earlier this month. Mr Greenwood served as controller of the SES from 1983 to 1992 and these days is the unit’s community engagement officer. His late wife, Betty, was also a founding member of the unit. Mr Russell took over the role of controller in 1992 and retains the role today. He is a director of the Victorian SES Authority board. Mr Russell said that the SES unit received more than 400 calls for assistance every year. “I think what I enjoy most now is seeing young people come up and progress, their highs and lows, seeing them get their first job and partners,” he said. “I thoroughly enjoy what I do.”
Mr Greenwood said that when the unit started in 1982, volunteers would gather at his and Betty’s home in Werribee, as they had nowhere else to conduct meetings. When there was an emergency, SES members would drive the Greenwood’s family vehicle to the scene. Mr and Mrs Greenwood even used their own finances to help equip the SES volunteers. Mr Greenwood said some of the most memorable emergencies he had attended across the years included the 1983 Werribee flood and Ash Wednesday, also in 1983. After receiving their awards, Mr Greenwood and Mr Russell thanked the community, Wyndham council (and its predecessor, Werribee Shire council) and the late John Nicol, who served as city engineer of Werribee Shire Council, for supporting the SES unit since 1982. Stadium leaks still not plugged By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has engaged an architect to design a “permanent solution” for the leaking roof at Eagle Stadium. The roof of the $47 million stadium has been leaking for more than 12 months, forcing the cancellation of basketball and netball games on days of heavy rainfall. The council has been working with the stadium’s builder for months to get the leaks fixed, while also investigating their cause.

Council city life director Jenny McMahon said that the council’s engagement of an architect was aimed at “resolving the issues” at the stadium. “We are experiencing issues with condensation and how the roof reacts to
temperature changes, as well as leaks from box guttering and problems with flashings,” she said. Ms McMahon said that in an attempt to reduce the impact of the leaks on stadium users, the council had implemented interim measures such as using silicon to seal areas that have been impacted by how the roof reacts to temperature. “Council is funding the interim measure and once the issue is resolved we will then take steps to recoup the costs,” she said.
“The priority is to do what we can to ensure the roof stops leaking as soon as possible while searching for a more permanent solution.” In August, Werribee Basketball Association president Paul Jones said that the number of club participants impacted by the roof leaks – and subsequent game cancellations – amounted to at least 1200 people since winter last year. Eagle Stadium is owned by the Wyndham council and managed by Western Leisure Services.
No debating their skills You wouldn’t want to cross these youngsters in a debate. Al-Taqwa College students Zohra, Aliza, Nazmin and Sara have enjoyed a winning year on the debating circuit, winning 27 out of 33 debates and taking out the Debaters Association of Victoria statewide tournament, the highest accolade they can receive in their year level. The grade six pupils all joined the debating team this year with the exception of Zohra, who started out last year. Nazmin said for the state championships, the team had to prepare debates for two topics given in advance – mobile phone usage should have an age limit (which they argued in the affirmative), and households which don’t recycle should be fined (negative). They also had to debate on an impromptu topic, beauty is better than brains (negative). “Thank God we were negative for that one, because we seriously did not know what to say,” Nazmin said.
Aliza added: “Sometimes, impromptu speeches are kind of better than your prepared speeches, because you did it all yourself without having any background knowledge about that topic.” Zohra said: “And it also helps you to think on the spot.” The team said they were thrilled to have won the state title. “We were all trying to compose ourselves, but we were all screaming in the bus [with excitement],” Nazmin said. The group said self-confidence was the key to being a good debater. “You’ve got to have passion in your speech to catch their attention … and give it your all,” Sara said. A-League decision on the way By Charlene Macaulay A decision on two new A-League licences is expected as early as today (Wednesday) and the Western Melbourne Group is waiting with bated breath to see if its bid is successful. The Western Melbourne Group’s self-funded bid to set up a club in Tarneit as part of an expansion of the A-League is one of six remaining proposals on the table. Wyndham council has worked with the
Western Melbourne Group on the bid, which also has the support of Brimbank, Maribyrnong and Melton councils. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw expressed concern last week after a report in the Herald Sun suggested that the state government was in talks about funding Team 11’s $170 million bid in Dandenong when it could “save it’s money for more important things like roads and hospitals”. Western Melbourne Group’s director of
football Steve Horvat said the consortium was already chatting to possible marquee player recruits to ensure the new club has a strong player base. Mr Horvat said the Western Melbourne Group has also started preliminary planning for building the Wyndham Stadium, and expects to turn soil on the project within 12 months of a decision. The team is expected to play its first home game in the opening round of the 2021-22 A-League season.
T.L.C. to the rescue Every dog who comes through the doors of T.L.C. Rescue Inc has its day. The Hoppers Crossing-based animal rescue group, which is a registered charity, has helped hundreds of dogs find loving new homes during the past four years. Pauline Roberts is the founder of T.L.C. and also a member of its committee, along with her husband Craig Roberts and friend Allison Ellis. Mr and Ms Roberts said the organisation took in dogs from pounds, surrendered dogs and ex-puppy farm dogs. “What I enjoy most is watching a dog come in, watching them progress to be the best they can be and go to a new home – we prepare them for the rest of their lives,” she said. All dogs rescued by T.L.C. are de-sexed, microchipped, vaccinated and wormed, and undergo surgery if they need it. Afterwards, the dogs stay with foster carers until they are ready to be re-homed. Ms Roberts said she was grateful for her
“awesome team” of volunteers and foster carers, including Ms Ellis. Ms Ellis said she loved helping dogs, although it was tough to say goodbye when they were re-homed. However, one of Ms Ellis’ foster dogs – a labrador and German shepherd-cross named Maggie – ended up staying. “My daughter fell in love with her and she fell in love with my daughter,” Ms Ellis said. Fashion, fun and fillies were the order of the day at this year’s Werribee Cup. About 5000 people flocked to Werribee Racecourse on Sunday to watch the Nick Ryan-trained Mahamedeis take out the big race a week after winning the Traralgon Cup. Werribee Racing Club general manager Ashley Baker said numbers were well up on last year. “It was the biggest crowd in many, many years,” he said. Mr Baker said the return of Fashions on the Field was another winner on the day, with about 80 women, men and children signing on to show off their finery. “It’s something we’re definitely looking to build on next year and make it even bigger and better,” he said. “It was our first year for a few years and we wanted to get something back and happening for people. The popularity of it was overwhelming.” The next Werribee race day will be on Christmas Eve, with $2 from every $5 entry fee going to local Country Fire Authority branches. It will be followed by the Kids Day Out on January 12.

New boss on the beat By Benjamin Millar Assistant Commissioner Debra Abbott knows she has a big job ahead of her – but she is relishing the challenge. As Victoria Police’s new commander in the North West Metro Region, Assistant Commissioner Abbott is in charge of all policing from the CBD out to the city’s northern and western fringes – one of Australia’s fastest growing regions. A 30-year veteran of Victoria Police, she most recently served as the head of state emergencies. “I’m actually very fortunate that my career has been really diverse,” she said. “I have led a large number of programs and projects, including the roll-out of new police uniforms.” Assistant Commissioner Abbott is keen to bring her experience into one of Melbourne’s most complex policing regions. “The good thing about working in the region of the north-west is that it is such a diverse area,” she said. “Every single day is different. “It’s enormously fulfilling – every day I pinch myself I’m so lucky.” The rapid change of pace in both the CBD and growth corridors in the city’s north and west means police must constantly adapt. Assistant Commissioner Abbott said that when she first worked in the region, very few people were living in high-rise apartments. “Now it’s growing, and growing so fast, which means we do have to police differently and respond to different challenges,” she said. Assistant Commissioner Abbott said that despite the constant change, basic principles had remained constant in her three decades in Victoria Police. “We’re there to do our utmost, that doesn’t change,” she said. “The things that haven’t

really changed are dealing with greed and rage and jealousy and power. What does change is the environment in which we operate. We have a growing community, we have a growing population, our roads are carrying more cars, more pedestrians and more cyclists.” Assistant Commissioner Abbott takes seriously her role to protect the community, but also knows their sense of safety is also important. “The perceptions of safety are as important
as safety itself,” she said. “Some parts of the community are in pain or struggling. My thought is the police are the community and the community are the police – there are parts of policing that we can’t do alone.” Keeping up with crime trends and new forms of policing is one thing, getting ahead of them is another challenge altogether, she explains. “It’s also really important to keep a really open mind on the things ahead on the horizon,” she said.
Water map marks the spot City West Water has unveiled a new interactive map. The online tool has a variety of features and shows customers reported faults and outages as well as areas where service has been recently restored. City West Water general manager customers and community Fran Duiker said the map had been rolled out after public demand. “Our customers told us they wanted easy access to our information and services,” Ms Duiker said. “We’re excited to let you know that our Outage Map is now live, so customers can quickly and easily see faults and outages across our service area online.” Reported faults and outages appear on the map as red dots. Green dots represent service faults which have recently been restored. Ms Duiker said the map made it easier to fix potential issues. “To be able to see faults and outages on a map makes it really easy to spot where City West Water is working to fix an issue or improve service. “It puts customers first, so that you can immediately see where we’re working or if you need to report a problem. “It can also reduce the need for customers to call and report a fault, because they can see if it’s already been reported and how we’re responding to it.” The map can be found online at www. citywestwater.com.au Tate Papworth

Christmas lights up Christmas cheer will shine bright during the Santander Crescent Street Parade next week. For the past four years, residents of the street have hosted a festive parade, raiseing more than $3000 for the local CFA and SES. This year’s parade, to be held on Tuesday, December 18 from 8.30-10.30pm, will feature the Victoria Scottish Pipes and Drums band, fancy dress, CFA fire trucks, an SES truck and Santa Claus. Resident Emma said most households in the street joined in the parade, and got into the spirit by decorating their properties with lights and Christmas props. This year, one house has the Grinch sitting in the front yard, while Emma’s family home has its lights set to a song from The Greatest
Showman. “We are very community-focused and we do it for the community, for people to have fun at Christmas. It has become a family tradition for a lot of people,” Emma said. She said local businesses sponsored the parade including Megalines Insurance and Risk Advisors, Point Cook Real Estate and Show Biz Costume Hire. The Brook also provides a shuttle bus to the event. Wyndham council has knocked back a planning permit application to build 26 double-storey units in a Tarneit street, after receiving 67 objections to the proposal. The council made the decision last week, despite a report from council officers recommending the plan be approved. Cr Josh Gilligan said the proposal for 3 Onyx Way would “have a detrimental impact on the amenity of surrounding properties”. He said if the proposal went ahead, it would result in about 156 additional vehicle movements per day in the area. Cr Gilligan also said that putting 26 units on
the block, which is about 4210 square metres, would be “an overdevelopment of the site”. Several residents of Onyx Way – including Melanie, Kevin, Igor, Kylie, Steve and Leanne who worked together to present an objection to the proposal at a council meeting held last month – described the decision to reject the plans as “wonderful news”. “We applaud the council for listening to our concerns, asking questions and making the right decision,” Melanie said. “The proposed 26 units in a small space didn’t fit with our community and the surrounding roads and infrastructure didn’t support such condensed housing in the middle of an estate not close to public transport.”
Cr Henry Barlow and Cr Peter Maynard were the only councillors who voted in favour of the planning permit application. Cr Barlow said Wyndham needed housing diversity and 3 Onyx Way was near open space and future shops. He said the proposal also met all the local planning requirements. “If this gets defeated tonight, the developer will take us to VCAT and we’ll have to spend several thousands dollars defending something that is probably indefensible,” he said. Earlier this year, the council approved a separate plan to build 13 double-storey units at 1 Onyx Way, despite receiving 113 objections to the application.

Reclink sporting life campaign is kicking goals Have any unused sporting equipment sitting in the garage or taking up space in a spare room? Reclink Australia is calling on Wyndham locals to donate good quality sporting gear to its Sports Equipment Outreach program, which is then redistributed to people and families in need. The organisation has been running the program for the past two years and has re-purposed thousands of pieces of sporting equipment, including basketballs, tennis racquets, cricket equipment, golf clubs, footy boots, bikes and even gym equipment. Reclink Australia founder Peter Cullen said playing sport had the power to transform lives in a positive manner. “We understand that even the simplest of toys, such as a ball, can be out of reach to most disadvantaged families,” Mr Cullen said. “What stands out for me, on a recent occasion delivering some of this equipment to a single parent was hearing the screams of sheer joy from her children as they played with their new belonging – a soccer ball. “When you are born into generational disadvantage, these acts become more than simple works of charity. “You’re giving that person an opportunity to participate in something they’ve never been able to previously, and doing that can change and save lives.” Mr Cullen called on people who had sporting equipment that they hadn’t used in the past two years to consider donating. Racetrack all revved up for 2019 By Alesha Capone and Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council says rebuilding of the junior and senior motocross tracks at Lawrie Emmins Reserve in Laverton North will begin next year. Almost two years ago, the council approved a planning permit to reuse the existing track, which closed in 2010. The council’s 2018-19 budget included $1.6 million for the project, including improving on-site facilities such as toilets and the carpark.
In May, Wyndham’s sports development portfolio holder Cr Peter Maynard said if everything “went to plan” building was set to kick off this year. With the year drawing to a close, Star Weekly contacted the council last week to find out what was happening with the project. The council’s city life director Jenny McMahon, said that the council had “undertaken some further testing of the motocross track at Lawrie Emmins Reserve, which we’re currently in the process of reviewing”.

“This has resulted in a delay in getting the construction going,” Ms McMahon said. She did not specify what kind of testing had been done at the track, or why the council had carried out the testing. “The community has been waiting a long time for this project, and we’re looking forward
to construction commencing in the new year,” Ms McMahon said. In July, Star Weekly reported that members from the Western Melbourne Field Archers and Werribee Archers, who use the reserve, were concerned about the state of the 70-hectare site. Members said 4WDs and motorcyclists had created makeshift race tracks at the reserve, which is also being used as a dumping ground for illegal rubbish and vandalism. Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches said police regularly patrolled the reserve, including on dirt bikes.
A program with bite A not-for-profit that delivers dental treatment to disadvantaged refugee mothers and children in Wyndham Vale is all smiles after receiving a sizeable grant. The Health in Kind organisation was recently awarded a US$10,000 grant (about $13,830 Australian dollars) as part of the Wrigley Company Foundation and Australian Dental Health Foundation Community Service grants program to help it expand its services. Health in Kind started three years ago with a mission to deliver health care free of charge to underprivileged communities around Australia. Dr Alpa Lodhiya said in the past year, the organisation has been providing free dental care through its mobile dental unit to the refugee community at the Iramoo Community Centre in Wyndham Vale, at mums and bubs sessions. The service has treated more than 110 patients in that time.
“We try to be a source of support for them as they try and transition into the country,” Dr Lodhiya said. “A lot of them don’t get access [to dental care] because of travel issues or language issues – they’re a little bit reluctant to seek health services, so we try and bridge the gap for them.” Dr Lodhiya said the grant would allow them to take their general screening to the next level. Baby formula syndicate charges By Adam Cooper/The Age Amid a national baby formula shortage, an alleged Melbourne crime syndicate has been accused in a Melbourne court of stealing formula tins valued at $900,000 from storage centres across the city in less than three months. Police allege Gurwinder Gill of Ardeer, Herdeep Singh of St Albans and Navjinder Singh of Newport were part of a group that robbed 15 sites between June 8 and August 30. Two of the three men appeared before the
Melbourne Magistrates Court, which released charge sheets that allege centres ranging from Point Cook to Springvale were robbed of formula and vitamins for babies. It is not known what the men did with the products, but it is understood that in some cases they used a forklift to move pallets of formula on to a truck. Among the charges was the theft of $160,000 of formula from a Mount Waverley storage centre on August 30, $100,000 of stock stolen from a Preston venue on July 25 and $90,000 of stock from a Point Cook building on June
8. Police believe about $900,000 of formula and vitamins were stolen across all the burglaries. Gill, 36, and Herdeep Singh, 21, were remanded in custody, but deputy chief magistrate Jelena Popovic issued a warrant for Navjinder Singh’s arrest when the 24-year-old failed to appear while on bail. Ms Popovic refused to grant Gill bail after she was told of his continued involvement in the syndicate despite being arrested in July and charged with burglary and theft charges and possessing heroin.
Gill, who ran a cleaning business from his Ardeer home, faces more than 30 charges including burglary, theft, dealing with the proceeds of crime, offending while on bail and possessing heroin. He is due to return to court next month. Herdeep Singh is set to contest charges of burglary, theft and drug possession charges at a hearing in February. Navjinder Singh is charged with burglary and theft offences, as well as failing to comply with his bail conditions, stealing a van and possessing an unregistered handgun.
Gymnasts vault ahead Three girls from the Werribee Gymnastics Club have vaulted, leaped and cartwheeled their way to success at a statewide gymnastics competition. Charli, 12, Lily, 14 and Ruth, 12 took part in the Women’s Junior Victorian Championships at Geelong Arena last month, in the level six teams division. They placed fourth overall out of 19 teams, with Ruth also being named the Victorian Vault Champion for her age group and level. The girls also performed bars, beam and floor routines. The Werribee club’s Australian Levels Program co-ordinator Ebony Biden said Charli, Lily and Ruth “showed exceptional maturity and sportsmanship through the competition, and achieved many personal and team goals”. Lily said that she and her teammates trained for nine hours per week, three days after school, at their gymnastics club.
“I liked everything about the competition, I thought it was good that we went in with a positive frame of mind and had fun,” she said. Six other girls from the Werribee club – Lilly, Tiah, Paige, Caitlin, Ellie-Ruth and Caitlyn – competed in level four and five at the state championships. Another youngster, 10-year-old Elizabeth, competed on an individual basis and placed fourth overall in the level five gymnasts category for her age group. Alesha Capone

Mayoral Column This week has seen a number of opportunities for community to come together and celebrate and share ideas. Last weekend I officiated my first Citizenship Ceremonies and it was fantastic to meet new residents who are looking forward to building a life in Wyndham. On Monday I was pleased to host Council’s International Day of People with a Disability event – this was such an honour and I was truly inspired by the attendees I met on the day. As a Council, it’s so important that we continue to provide leadership in making our City accessible for all, this is something I am really passionate about. On Thursday evening I attended the Community Conversations for 2019/20 Annual Plan and Budget at Eagle Stadium – hearing first-hand from residents what they believe our priorities should be was invaluable and I thank everyone who attended for their input. On Friday I met with our Federal Member, Joanne Ryan MP and we had a great discussion about support for local groups and priorities for next year. Awards for top educator By Alesha Capone Jennie Barrera says she enjoys working with the community, especially young people, and seeing how education can make a difference in their lives. For more than 10 years, Ms Barrera has served as chief executive of the Wyndham Community and Education Centre (WCEC) in Werribee, where she first started as a teacher in 1994. She also serves as chair of the Wyndham Humanitarian Network. Ms Barrera’s dedication and passion to education led to her receiving the Lynne Kosky Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Victorian Training Awards, which were held in August. Ms Barrera was also presented with the National Achievement Award at the Australian Training Awards last month. Ms Barrera said that even before she won the national award, receiving the Lynne Kosky Memorial award “was totally unexpected” and “a great thrill”. Ms Barrera said she had been involved in the education field for almost 40 years. “I mostly enjoy working directly with community and especially with young people – the team I work with at Wyndham CEC get an opportunity daily to make a difference in the lives of so many people,” she said. Under Ms Barrera’s leadership, the WCEC has incorporated Vocational Education and Training (VET) into the range of services it offers, including courses such as literacy, language and numeracy, early childhood education and digital literacy. Ms Barrera said that it was her own “great teachers”, and a realisation that education could change lives, which led her to pursuing a career in the field.

Council works on plastic ban By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has ordered a second report into a proposal to ban most single-use plastics at its events and facilities. The council considered a report into the potential ban, which was first suggested by Cr Heather Marcus in August, during a meeting last week.
During the meeting, Cr Marcus and Cr Josh Gilligan encouraged their fellow councillors to vote in favour of adopting a ban on the supply of single-use plastics at council-managed events and facilities, excluding bottled water and coffee cups sold by event stallholders. Instead, most councillors voted in favour of an additional report being completed before the introduction of a ban.
Cr Kim McAliney said that another report was needed and should include a detailed action plan comprising associated costs, implications and resources required. If the council adopts the proposed ban in its current form, it would involve most single-use plastics – including straws, balloons, bags, cutlery, plates and cups – being eliminated from Wyndham council events and venues.
The current report into the potential ban states that plastic straws would still be made available to people who require them, such as people with disabilities. The report states the council should implement a transition period of six months or more before introducing any ban and that leaseholders (such as sports clubs) would not be impacted by a ban.
Babies can breathe easy A motorcycle club has raised $1750 to help Werribee Mercy Hospital buy a piece of life-saving equipment. Members from the Wyndham chapter of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club, along with hospital staff, gathered in Mercy’s Special Care Nursery last week, to present the Neopuff machine. The machine provides respiratory support to babies, including premature infants, who are born with breathing difficulties. To raise money for the hospital, members of the Red Knights – which is a social motorcycle club for past and current firefighters, their families and partners – held a Poker Run in February and a Christmas in July event. Jenny Anning, from the Mercy Health Foundation, thanked the Red Knights during the presentation. “We appreciate the support and ongoing support, community support is so vital for us to continue to do what we do,” she said. Michelle Dickson moved to Hoppers Crossing for love 14 years ago and has never looked back. The disability support worker recently started Love Thy Neighbour, which makes clothes for people in need. She sat down with Charlene Macaulay. What’s your connection to Hoppers Crossing? I came from Strathmore. My mother was in Melton and I shifted there to be with her when she had cancer and wanted to die at home; she didn’t want to die in hospital. The lady that I lived across from was Darren’s [my husband] sister’s best friend, so we met through her. Then I shifted in with him in Hoppers Crossing … that was 14 years ago. We got married recently. It was one of those relationships where I knew within a week he was the one for me and within two weeks he’d already asked me to marry him. We just knew immediately. We’ve got five children [between us]. What do you like about this area? I love the sense of community … I think because everyone’s had a bit of a hard time themselves in life, they’re more giving and you just don’t find that in other areas. There are so many different cultures and food!
I’ve always done community work, helping out doing some cooking or dropping off a food hamper. There were a couple of people on [social media] pages and they were asking for clothes. Normally, I’d go through the clothes the kids have and see if there’s anything there. No one could help them. I thought, “Geez, these people can’t even afford to go to an op shop – that’s pretty sad”. So I thought, “I’ve got material, I’m going to ask if it’s OK if I make it”. And I started doing it. I’ve been blessed to be able to sew – my mother taught me. I’ve got a few people that have offered to help already. I

just try to do my best. I’m working 40 hours a week in disability and I’ve got the kids and the housework and everything like that, so I can’t do huge amounts, but I potter along. My old faithful sewing machine, this was my mum’s, so every time I make something, I’m making it with her love. I wouldn’t mind a Love Thy Neighbour in every single area.
Do you have a favourite hangout place? We try and go to a different place every time. We’ll go to The Tigers Club if we just want to get out of the house. They have lovely meals. If you could change one thing about the area, what would it be?

The traffic. If there’s one accident, it closes off the whole area. I had one client who I was supposed to get to and take them to chemo and I couldn’t get out of the area – I was in the car for nearly six hours. I had another client who had to lay in his own filth because he couldn’t get out of his own bed. We need to fix the roads. We can’t keep saying, “Let’s build more trains”.

The Minister for Education, Mr. Lindsay Thompson, has approved the conversion, in 1980, of Werribee Technical School into a co-educational institution. The decision is a victory for parents who have been pressing for several weeks for the right to send their girls to Werribee Technical School.
Test fast bowler Merv Hughes, the Werribee express, has tumbled wickets and records at the WACA Cricket Ground in Perth during the Second Test against the West Indies. When the West Indies declared their second innings closed yesterday, Hughes had taken 8/87 including the scalps of some of the world’s best batsmen.
Wyndham Council has awarded the tender for resurfacing the city’s roads to a contractor under fire for the condition of the Princes Freeway between Laverton and Werribee. Sprayline, the privatised resurfacing division of State Government’s Roads Corporation, was awarded the contract ahead of three competitors – CSR, Boral and Pioneer.
A rail link between Werribee and Sunshine forms one of the major planks of the State Government’s $38 billion Victorian Transport Plan announced on Monday. It includes 44 kilometres of twin track from West Werribee to Southern Cross railway station, via Tarneit and Sunshine, providing separate tracks for regional and metropolitan trains for the first time.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir says it’s a good bang for your buck at Batterbing Batterbing is in a Douglas Parade premises that has been home to fish and chips for a long, long time. Decades, I’m guessing. In any case, these days – under its newish name – it’s being run by John McMonagle, whose work we loved so much at Dough! in Newport. His Williamstown location is superior – it’s handily placed for more drop-in and foot traffic. And that’s great – it means more people can enjoy the super work being done by John and his team. The place remains very much an old-school fish and chip shop, with rudimentary dine-in facilities – a bench and stools inside, a few tables and chairs on the footpath outside. But none of that matters. Here be made – and happily consumed – what are, in our opinions and experience, the best fish and chips in the western suburbs. Matched, mind you, by Ebi in Essex Street, Footscray – very different style, equally fine outcome. The Batterbing art starts with chips. Here the potatoes are hand-cut and tumbled – and are wonderful. Real spuds make for hip chips. I go with my never-fail arrangement carried over from the Dough! days – now officially called Combo for 1 ($15, top photograph). Those chips, a handful of tender calamari rings and a nice chunk of juicy, delicious and

The forecast for Melbourne – falling prices followed by moderate growth After a tumultuous 12 months for Australia’s property markets, 2019 looks likely to be a year of greater stability. That’s not to say prices won’t fall further, but the pace of those falls will slow in the first half of the year before we move into another moderate growth phase, reports Trent Wiltshire, Domain economist. We expect Sydney and Melbourne will be two of the weakest markets in 2019 and forecast prices to grow at about 4 per cent in 2020. We expect the falls experienced by Sydney and Melbourne in the 2017-19 period will prove to be the largest since the late 1980s. But it’s worth remembering these falls have come on the back of an extraordinary period of rapid growth. Investor caution, tighter bank lending practices, weak sentiment and new housing supply weighed on prices in 2018 and will continue to push prices lower in the next few months. But we expect things to turn around slowly in 2019. Banks and potential borrowers should adjust to tighter lending standards, with lending growth to resume but at a more moderate pace. Also supporting house prices will be projected strong (albeit slowing) population growth, lower unemployment, faster wage growth and increasing first home-buyer activity. A number of factors could result in prices deviating from the forecasts. The major downside risks include mortgage rates rising earlier and faster than expected; banks tightening lending even further; slower population growth; forced selling by investors; and a slowdown in the Chinese economy. On the other hand, a possible slowdown in housing construction, government

intervention to support the market and a stronger economy could mean price growth is stronger than we forecast. The impact of the Labor Party’s proposed changes to negative gearing is more uncertain. The reform will likely push prices lower eventually, but may actually support prices in the next six to 18 months. We expect Melbourne house prices to decline by about one per cent in 2019 after a nine per cent fall in 2018. We forecast that Melbourne house prices will rise by
about four per cent in 2020. They are predicted to fall by about 11 per cent from a peak average of $910,000 in December, 2017, to a low point of about $800,000 in mid-2019. Melbourne unit prices are expected to fall by about one to two per cent in 2018, and then prices are expected to grow by about one per cent in 2019 and 2020. Melbourne unit prices are predicted to fall by about three per cent from their peak of $507,000 in March, 2017, to about $490,000.
Tighter lending conditions and weak sentiment will weigh on Melbourne property prices in 2019. But Victoria’s unemployment rate is falling and Melbourne’s population growth is expected to remain very strong, with annual growth remaining above two per cent over the next few years. ■ The Werribee Cup was run and won in fine style by the favourite Mahamedeis on Sunday, but the Cup day has a long way to go. No one knows that better than Ashley Baker, the club’s general manager who now has a template to work with for future Cups. It is one of the hardest jobs in sport in the west and one that comes with some pretty big handbrakes. Baker is working with a shrunken calendar due to the international commitment to the spring carnival and with a race that has lost its place in the pecking order. We all know the cup won by Makybe Diva in 2002 is a very different entity to the version run this past week. Small fields don’t mean bad racing but to only have two races with more than seven runners on cup day is very disappointing, especially for the each way punters. Lots of very good work has been done to get the club back its credibility, now its feature race day needs the same. ■ What an amazing weekend of highs and lows for Werribee’s sporting Dean brothers. Travis joined an elite group on Friday, being named captain of the Victorian Shield side. The list to have that honour includes Lawry, Harvey, Bright, Cowper, Stackpole, Redpath, Dodemaide and O’Donnell. Travis won the toss and batted but only managed 16 in a big Victorian first innings score. That night a horse he part owns with local sporting identities saluted in race five at Moonee Valley, the 55 Second Classic. The next day his siblings Matt and Shaun – who have been in scintillating batting form with Werribee – both made ducks in the Tigers’ first innings score of 209. Talk about the highs and lows.

Warriors tune up for top two showdown Point Cook will spend another week atop the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 ladder after a commanding 43-run win over West Newport at Saltwater Reserve. The Warriors remain two points clear of Sunshine at the top, but those two sides will meet in a mouth-watering two-day clash starting this Saturday to determine which will be the front-runner heading into Christmas. Point Cook will go into that battle full of confidence after its dismantling of West Newport in the one-dayer on Saturday. The Warriors produced a solid if unspectacular 9-142 off 40 overs with the bat. After struggling early to be 5-44, the Warriors recovered through the middle order. Player-coach Aaron Whear top-scored for Point Cook with 39, while wicketkeeper James Peterson made 27. Sarwan Kumar provided valuable late runs with 18. It was with the ball that Point Cook took charge. The Warriors routed West Newport for 99 in 37.3 overs.

Every Point Cook bowler contributed to the Wests’ demise, but none more so than Gurbaksh Khaira, who snared 4-15 off eight. Khaira improved his season tally to 11 wickets at 10.6. James Doolan was Point Cook’s other multiple wicket taker with 2-14.
Point Cook’s blockbuster with second-placed Sunshine will take place at Saltwater Reserve over the next two Saturdays. Second-last Seabrook was no match for Sunshine away at Dempster Park. Winning has become a habit for Werribee Giants in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2. Even when the Giants were playing at nowhere near their best levels, they found ways to improve to 12-1 for the season in a “real sloppy” 7-3 extra-innings win over Port Melbourne Mariners at JL Murphy Reserve on Sunday. The Giants’ grit is a delight for coach John Curnow. “We’re able hold the teams when we’re not playing too well,” he said. Pitching did the job for Werribee after an error-riddled day in the field and a string of wasteful at-bats. The Giants committed four errors and their batting was disjointed. “We didn’t play their field as well as we do every other field,” Curnow said. “They attacked the balls that we hit to them and we stood back and let them play us. “We also couldn’t string the hits together, which is a bit of an issue. We’d get a hit, then two outs and we couldn’t do anything.” The positive for Werribee was the superb pitching display by Wes DeJong. He threw 10 innings, averaging 10.3 pitches per innings, and was a constant thorn in the side of the Mariners batters, who managed only six hits for the game. “He really battled for us today,” Curnow said. “Guys let him down in the field a few times today and he stood up. “He stayed focused and did his job the whole day, no matter what. “That’s what he does every time he goes out there. “We’ve got good confidence whenever he’s on the mound that we’ll do all right.” DeJong was in total control from the outset. He mixed up his speeds and pitches and froze the batters with his curveball. Any time he dropped the curve into the dirt, he had catcher Oliver Box as his insurance policy. “Wes throws a lot of off speed stuff in the dirt and tries to keep the hitters off balance,” Curnow said. “He did a real good job back there, blocking all that.” At 3-3, Andrew Christou got the go-ahead hit in the 11th inning before import Guillermo Salazer closed out the game with an inning in relief at the bottom of the 11th. Werribee remains one game back of unbeaten Cheltenham Rustlers with another trip to Port Melbourne coming on Thursday night.

Werribee has landed son-of-a-gun Jackson Edwards as it builds its list for the 2019 Victorian Football League season. Edwards, the son of Adelaide Crows 300-gamer and dual premiership midfielder Tyson, has made the move to Watton Street to boost his chances of returning to the AFL system. The rookie-listed Edwards was delisted by the Crows at the end of last season and decided to rejuvenate his career in Victoria. The 19-year-old is excited by the chance to work under new Werribee senior coach Mark Williams, who he has known since his junior days. “I think Werribee has the best people in place to help me get back to the top level, especially in ‘Choco’ Williams,” Edwards said. “He coached me a little in primary school, so I’ve got that relationship. I just think the elite facilities and high-performance coaches here are going to help me take the next step.”
Edwards was taken by Adelaide with pick 41 in the 2017 rookie draft. He was unable to secure a start with the senior team for Adelaide, but managed 14 SANFL games in the hoops to go with his four for Glenelg in 2017. Werribee will be getting an inside midfielder in Edwards, one that makes good decisions in traffic and is able to deliver with precision by foot. Werribee football operations manager Stuart Balloch is impressed by Edwards’ dedication. “Anyone who’s prepared to pack up their life at 19 and move away from their family and support network to pursue something they want has a high level of determination,” he said. “Jackson has shown that initiative to challenge himself and has picked our club as a stand-alone VFL side as the place to give him more opportunities. “We’re really glad he sees this as the best place for him to try to have another crack at AFL footy.”
Werribee has also brought in key position player Timm House. House, who can play at either end of the ground, was delisted by Geelong at the end of last season. Middle order stands up By Lance Jenkinson Werribee gained insight into its middle to lower order batting when its top four batsmen flunked the test against Yarraville in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west at Chirnside Park on Saturday. The Tigers’ top order is usually so dependable that its less recognised batsmen have little chance to show their wares for anything more than late big hitting. But on Saturday, they were in all sorts of trouble early on to be 4-21. The Dean machine, brothers Matt and Shaun Dean, ground to a screeching halt. The previous week, they combined for a superb 148-run partnership, but on Saturday they came back down to earth with a pair of ducks. First drop Andrew Ford’s time in the middle was fleeting en route to 12, while captain Tim O’Brien could manage only four. The rescue missions would fall to the Tigers’ middle order batsmen. They thrived with the extra responsibility – much to the delight of their skipper. “It was very pleasing that we were able to recover the way that we did after being in a pretty ordinary position,” O’Brien said of his team’s 209 in 68.3 overs. “It was great to see other players standing up, because it shows if it happens again later on in the season, we’ve got other players we can rely on … it’s a real positive.” The tide turned on the back of a partnership between Chris Hennessy and Adam Alifraco. Alifraco was the aggressor with a quickfire 26 before luck went against him. “He was looking really good out there,” O’Brien said. “Unfortunately, he got one off a spinner that kept low and he got done lbw. “It was a vital partnership, that one, to get us back on track.” Even so, the wickets continued to tumble, with James Freeman and Matthew Harmer going cheaply as the Tigers stumbled to 7-96. One constant for Werribee was Hennessy. The captain of last year’s second XI premiership was magnificent with 71. “He’s had a really great start to the year and been able to put some good scores together,” O’Brien said. “He just hit the ball along the ground and when the ball was in his zone, he was able to hit it really well.” It was not until Jonathan Burton joined Hennessy at the crease that the Tigers really started to cause headaches for Yarraville. Hennessy and Burton provided a hugely important 93-run eighth wicket partnership. Burton’s contribution to the total was an eye-catching 62 not out. “He’s got a lot of confidence in himself with the bat now and he’s starting to reap the rewards,” O’Brien said. “He’s not one of those ones who slogs them – he builds an innings. He does play his shots, but they’re low risk.” Both sides feel they can secure victory on day two. Yarraville will resume on 0-7, requiring 203 more runs. O’Brien believes Werribee can defend the relatively small total.
“Runs on the board at Chirnside are important because it’s a hard ground to chase on,” he said. “We’ll be up and about at training this week with a focus to restrict Yarraville to get the win.” Hoppers Crossing requires 191 runs this Saturday to win against Altona at Hogans Road Reserve. The Cats were dominant with the ball on day one, led by first-change Bryce Stuart, who took 3-32 off 10.2.
Werribee Bowls Club has experienced a rollercoaster weekend of home games in Bowls Victoria division 1. The Bees began with a high at Chirnside Park on Saturday, eclipsing Essendon 83-74. The addition of new skip Colin Thompson was telling with his rink finishing 15 up. But then Werribee was left deflated on Sunday after a crushing 91-57 defeat to Melbourne. At least Thompson’s good form continued with his rink the only winner after finishing plus-four. Werribee has dropped to ninth on the ladder with a crucial game against Flemington Kensington on the road this Saturday. In division 2, Hoppers also had an up-and-down weekend. Hoppers started with a bang on Saturday, mowing over Rosamond 89-71 away. Unfortunately for Hoppers, the good times ended there. Not to be outdone by the Tucson Go, the other models – ActiveX, Elite and Highlander – have also come in for a mid-cycle makeover, which includes updated interior and exterior styling with new wheel designs, and tablet-style multimedia with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard across the range. Styling Not much to see here: The hallmark Hyundai cascading grille has been redesigned, together with headlamps and daytime running lights. In profile, meaty wheel arches tie this frontal treatment in with a pleasing new rear, featuring sharper tailgate lines and refined new taillight layout. Tucson Go features 17-inch steel wheels with five-spoke wheel covers and a matching full-size spare wheel. Interior Inside, Tucson Go features a new floating tablet-style multimedia system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, bringing it in line with the whole Hyundai SUV range.
Safety The introduction of a SmartSense safety option pack on the entry-level Go and Active X models makes advanced safety accessible on every Tucson grade. The SmartSense pack, available in automatic models for $2200, brings forward collision avoidance assist, blind-spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic collision warning, lane keeping assist and driver attention warning systems among the safety and convenience features.

Driving Input by Hyundai’s Australian chassis, suspension and steering engineers has made for an easy-going character to the MY19 Tucson, even on some of the worst road surfaces around.
