Avalon Airport has officially become Victoria’s second international airport, with AirAsia flight D7218 from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne scheduled to touchdown at 8.20am today (Wednesday). Spanning 7500 square metres, the $48 million international terminal has created 100 full-time jobs and includes two duty free stores, a full bar and cafe, and is the first airport in Australia to have CT cabin baggage screening. AirAsia X Malaysia chief executive Benyamin Ismail said 14 flights would arrive and depart from Avalon’s new international terminal in the first week of operation.

It is expected more than 500,000 people will go through Avalon’s international terminal in its first year of operation. “Avalon International offers our guests many advantages including a hassle free, streamlined arrivals and departures experience and direct access to one of Australia’s greatest tourism icons – the Great Ocean Road,” Mr Ismail said. “As the flagship carrier to launch services from Avalon Airport, this is a game changer for consumers, for tourism and the industry. “Australians wanting to fly to Kuala Lumpur or connect to our global network of more than 130 destinations worldwide becomes a reality … and we couldn’t be more excited.” Avalon Airport chief executive Justin Giddings said the terminal was designed for quick and convenient use. “This terminal has the latest security technology, is the most accessible terminal in Australia, and I think is the best small airport in the world,” Mr Giddings said. “This new terminal is consistent with our slogan, ‘flying made easy’. “This terminal has room for expansion, and we look forward to announcing further routes, and to housing further airlines in the future.” As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, more hotels across Wyndham could be on the horizon as the council seeks to capitalise on the expected boost in tourism that the international terminal may provide. “What we want to do is open this particular region up to the world. “We are planning on extending this facility over several occasions over the next journey – it’s a generational asset.”

Christmas carols hit a sour note By Alesha Capone Residents are rallying to bring back a popular Christmas event, which has been cancelled for this year. The Wyndham Carols by Candlelight at Werribee Park is usually staged in early December and has been held for more than 30 years. The event – which is also known as “Carols at the Mansion” – traditionally attracts thousands of visitors and is the largest Carols by
Candlelight in the state, apart from Melbourne council’s Christmas Eve concert. Candlelight chairman Pastor Eddy Venema said the Wyndham Churches Network reluctantly decided to cancel the 2018 Wyndham Carols By Candlelight because of a series of logistical issues. “We know the community are very disappointed, just as we are, however the Wyndham Carols By Candlelight event will be back next year,” Pastor Venema said. “Planning is already under way to make sure
Wyndham Carols by Candlelight returns and is better than ever in 2019.” Wyndham resident Meghan Hopper said the Werribee Parks carols were “an important tradition in the Wyndham community”. “Many of us attended with our families as infants and the event still forms an important part of our lives today,” she said. Ms Hopper has started an online petition, calling on Wyndham council to “save” the carols. She said while the council does not host the
event, they could still step in to help community volunteers put on a festive show. The petition asks for the council to support residents “by facilitating a community-led Carols by Candlelight”. Last week, more than 120 people had signed the petition within five days. Star Weekly contacted Wyndham council and Parks Victoria for comment. Mayor thrives on community care Wyndham councillor Mia Shaw has been elected mayor for the next 12 months. Cr Shaw, who represents Iramoo ward, was elected unopposed at a council meeting last Wednesday. Cr John Gibbons was elected as deputy mayor with a majority of six votes from other councillors. Cr Josh Gilligan was also nominated for the role of deputy mayor. After she was officially sworn in as mayor, Cr Shaw spoke about when she was first elected to council two years ago.

“I ran for council in 2016 because I wanted to make a difference in the area I grew up in,” she said. Cr Shaw’s family has a long history of serving the community – her great-grandfather William Shaw served as Werribee shire president on three occasions between 1917 and 1946. Cr Shaw said that before the state election, the Labor party had made a number of commitments to fund various projects in the Wyndham area. A driver has pleaded guilty to causing the deaths of two children and injuring their mother in a car crash in Melbourne’s west. Damian Tiahaiere Rakatau entered a guilty plea on Monday in Melbourne Magistrates Court to culpable driving causing the death of 10-year-old Ruana Panicker in a three-car crash at Truganina in July. He also admitted to causing the death of the girl’s four-year-old brother, Immanuel, and negligently causing serious injury to their mother. “It is a tragedy of enormous extent,” magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg said. Rakatau is also charged with unlicensed driving, for which he is yet to enter a plea. The charge will be heard along with other offences in April. Rakatau was hospitalised after the crash. Police previously said the crash occurred when he overtook a car and hit another.

W
e now have newly elected and sworn in state representatives and a bright, shiny new mayor, so all we need now is for those aforementioned people to do what they are being handsomely paid for. Between holidaying and campaigning, not a lot of governing has been tended to of late, so in the immortal, ear piercing words of the great John Kennedy snr … do something! We now have the state treasurer and the attorney general representing us locally. Congrats on the titles Tim and Jill, but frankly I could not care less. I am sure it means a nice little earner for you, but does it get anything done to address the issues in the seats of Altona and Werribee? The swing against Mr Pallas was not enough for him to vacate his chair, but I hope it was enough to alert him to the fact the natives are restless. We don’t ask for much, we just want some decent representation in our own backyard. Pallas, Sarah Connolly and Hennessy all did some big talking while campaigning. Back that talk up now.
It is also incumbent on those who ran against them to make sure their voice continues to be heard. This once every four year parade of care and attention is not good enough. We demand 365 days a year for four years. That is what you have signed up for. Mia Shaw won the mayoral robes last week and now captains the good ship Wyndham for the next year. Let’s hope her crew have found their land legs (and the council chamber) and can give their undivided attention to things concerning their ward, the ratepayers and businesses in their immediate vicinity. That is, after all, what they are there to do. That is of course unless any have other ambitions for federal politics, the priesthood or the NBA, because that would surely take precedence over something as trivial as council business, which seems to be on the backburner for most. I hope Cr Shaw can put a rocket up the whole system from top to bottom. This is a fresh start for everyone, me included. I have cleaned the slate for all. How long before the first tick or cross â– is required? â–

A fifth teenager has been arrested in relation to a home invasion in Peppermint Crescent, Wyndham Vale last month. At the weekend, Victoria Police released a statement which said they were interviewing a 17-year-old in relation to the incident. Two other youth had been arrested earlier in the Certificate opportunity week. Last month detectives charged an 18-year-old Melton West man and a 16-year-old Glenroy boy in relation to the incident.

Cost blowout at Werribee tip By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council has had to fork out an extra $847,000 to build a new cell at Werribee tip. Contractors Mackenzie Environmental, originally awarded the $380,000 contract (with a $50,000 contingency) to build cell 5 in November 2016, has successfully requoted the job for $1.161 million plus a contingency of $116,100 to allow for additional design and construction elements issued by the EPA and upheld by VCAT that were not included in the

original scope of works. Councillor Kim McAliney said this included a groundwater collection system, an additional geotech-style membrane and increased testing and sampling. Cr McAliney stressed the increased cost
would not come from ratepayers but instead would be passed on to future tip customers in the price charged per each tonne of waste dumped at the new cell. “While these extra costs were not anticipated in 2016, council accepts them as part of its commitment to operating a best practice landfill with the highest environmental standards,” she said. “In addition, work is under way six days a week to make up for the lost time during the VCAT appeal.”
The expansion of the Werribee tip has been plagued with delays and additional costs. As reported by Star Weekly, Wyndham council spent about $475,000 fighting the VCAT review into the EPA’s decision to approve four new cells in the Wests Road landfill, which was brought about by the Western Region Environment Centre. VCAT upheld the EPA’s original decision, with minor amendments. Construction has begun on the cell, with the first stage expected to be complete this month.
Brothers follow their gut They may have had a gut feeling they would win. Two brothers behind Soulfresh’s Lo Bros kombucha cola have been recognised in the Australian Organic Awards for Excellence. Didi and Hsiao Lo’s fermented cola, packed with probiotic bacteria good for gut health, was named best new certified organic product at the awards in Canberra last week. The brothers started out in Footscray and now export around the world from their Laverton North plant. Didi said their cola was based on an 1878 recipe and was naturally low in sugar. It uses tea from the Yarra Valley brewed with springwater from Daylesford. Then they add scoby – a living culture that is a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast. “When we started growing kombucha, what we soon realised is there’s just this wonderful chemistry that occurs,” Didi said. “At the end of about 30 days’ worth of fermentation, you
end up with a product which is naturally low in sugar and has these wonderful flavours with a beautiful tanginess and is obviously very beneficial because it has all the probiotics in there. “You get all these wonderful things that aid digestion; it really helps to promote gut health … so many health issues are now being linked to poor diet and poor gut. “A healthy gut is a key to happiness – five times more seretonin is produced in your stomach than is produced in your brain.” The awards were hosted by not-for-profit peak industry group Australian Organic. Shocking animal cruelty figures Werribee racing date A WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY SPECIAL FEATURE
By Alesha Capone RSPCA Victoria has received almost 300 animal cruelty reports from Wyndham during a 12-month period. In the 2017-18 financial year, there were 291 animal cruelty reports in Wyndham, ranking the municipality 13th-highest of the state’s 79 municipalities. During the 2016-17 financial year there were 294 animal cruelty reports recorded in Wyndham and it ranked eighth in the state. RSPCA Victoria’s chief executive Dr Liz Walker said the organisation used localised
data to understand trends in cruelty reporting and offending, which helped to target prevention and education initiatives to the areas which needed them most. Dr Walker said there were 10,642 animal cruelty reports made across Victoria in 2017-18, equating to about 29 per day. The Greater Geelong municipality ranked highest in the state with 559 reports. “Over the last two years that we’ve released these reports, we’ve seen that many communities are shocked to learn of the levels of cruelty reporting in their area and eager to see those numbers go down, just as we are,”

Dr Walker said. “These statistics reflect that there is still a lot of important work that needs to be done to educate Victorians and improve animal welfare in our communities. “It breaks our hearts to see our inspectors and vets attend to so many animals that are severely malnourished and ill, who clearly haven’t been shown even the most basic care.”
She said out of the 291 reports received from Wyndham, 148 were about animals with insufficient food, water or shelter. Another 77 concerned animal hygiene, grooming and housing conditions, 67 were about underweight animals and 70 involved sick or injured animals not receiving veterinary treatment. An additional 29 reports were about animals being beaten or wounded and 40 concerned abandoned animals. Enhancing parks and gardens, activating the bay and supporting the development of key visitor attractions are the hallmarks of a Western Melbourne Tourism plan to boost tourism in the west by 21 per cent over the next decade. The regional tourism board, which launched its Melbourne’s West Destination Management Visitor plan, aims to attract 4.3 million visitors to the west by the 2026-27 financial year and boost overnight stays by 90 per cent to 12.4 million stays. Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Melton, Wyndham and Moonee Valley attracted 3.6 million visitors over 2017-18, with 76 per cent making day trips and 20 per cent staying overnight. The west’s tourism economy currently brings in $1.45 billion. Visiting parks and gardens was the top must-do attraction (45 per cent) as identified in a visitor survey, followed by shopping (24 per cent), art, museums and cultural attractions (23 per cent) and restaurants and cafes (22 per cent). Western Melbourne Tourism executive officer Richard Ponsford said enhancing the west’s natural assets – including parks, gardens, the bay coastline and industrial precincts like the Newport rail yards – was a key part of the plan. Mr Ponsford said it was also important to boost accommodation options in the region, with the west having above-average rates of visitors coming in for day trips and not staying overnight. He said the new Airport rail link and international flights in and out of Avalon Airport would be game changers for tourism in the west.

Point Cook painter Leesa Gray-Pitt has been awarded an artist residency at a French chateau next year. Gray-Pitt said the residency, at Chateau d’Orquevaux in Champagne-Ardenne, would run from May 2-30. “I got an email saying that I had been accepted in the middle of the night, I was so excited that I couldn’t sleep,” she said. “This would be a beautiful place to meet, work, talk and engage with other artists.” Gray-Pitt said she started painting in 2015, when her daughter Star was diagnosed with cancer. She said art helped her to “deal with the pain and loss” when Star died at the age of 20 in 2016. “It has been my therapy, my savior, my catharsis, my everything,” she said. Gray-Pitt, who has three other children, said she mainly painted portraits. Chateau d’Orquevaux has provided Gray-Pitt with a grant to help cover the costs of her residency in France, but she still needs to raise funds for flights and accommodation. She is hoping to sell some of her paintings, find sponsors and do commissions to help fund the trip. Lifting lid on good ideas This Hoppers Crossing Secondary College student has helped invent an automatic toilet seat that could end household wars over whether the seat should be left up or down. Pam was part of a team of three to spruik the idea at the recent TiE young entrepreneurs competition, in which participants were asked to turn their good ideas into robust business plans. The year 8 student said she came up with the idea for an automatic toilet seat when she went to the bathroom in the middle of the night and fell into the bowl after her brother had left the toilet seat up. Pam’s team, which won the competition, will head to Silicon Valley in California next year to present their product in a global competition.

“When we won, I was so happy – I couldn’t stop smiling,” she said. “It was really challenging. Since I’m only in year 8, I didn’t know a lot of the hard stuff, like [how to work out] the financials and paying taxes and stuff like that. “I’m more on the creativity side, so I did all the logos, the business cards, the designing process, the prototype and building a toilet seat.” The Hoppers Crossing resident said she was keen to be a dentist once she graduated from high school, but liked the idea of being the chief executive of a company after participating in the TiE competition. Youths linked to three robberies By Alesha Capone A 20-year-old man was kicked in the face during a robbery in Wyndham last week. The incident was one of three robberies within an hour on Monday, November 27. Police said three males approached the 20-year-old victim and demanded his belongings about 10.30pm in Whistler
Crescent, Point Cook. One of the males kicked the victim in the face, before the trio fled the scene. About 20 minutes later, a 45-year-old man walking along the Federation Trail in Hoppers Crossing was approached by three males who demanded his belongings. The man was knocked to the ground and kicked by the offenders before they ran away
empty-handed. Police said the third robbery occurred about 11.15pm on Palmers Road in Williams Landing. Three males approached a man, aged in his 40s, and demanded his belongings. After the victim handed over a mobile phone the three males fled the scene in a dark-coloured hatchback car that had been waiting nearby.
Police believe the three robberies could be linked. In all three incidents, the offenders were described as young African males. Police said it was not known whether the three robberies were linked to an aggravated home invasion on November 17 in Wyndham Vale. Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Cash for the community Sporting groups, charity fundraisers and other local organisations have shared in $18,500 funding through the inaugural Westbrook Community Fund. A total 19 not-for-profit community groups in Truganina, Tarneit and some surrounding areas received grants of either $500 or $1000 to support their causes. Among the recipients were Truganina AusKick, which will use its $1000 grant to buy new equipment for its rapidly growing membership; the Love Thy Neighbour project, which makes and distributes clothes for people in need and; Truganina Fire Brigade, which received a $1000 grant to buy tablets for its fire trucks that will allow for GPS mapping. Truganina Fire Brigade captain Mark Hatton said he was thrilled with the grant. “One of the biggest challenges we face at Truganina Fire Brigade are constantly evolving new roads and infrastructure,” Mr Hatton said. “This money means we can now access the most up-to-date maps to determine the quickest routes to fire calls.” The Westbrook Community Fund is one
of many community funds established by the Dennis Family Corporation across a number of its residential estates. Collectively, the funds have given away more than $600,000 in grants since introduced in 2002. Dennis Family group managing director Grant Dennis said his family had always considered it important to support the areas where its business operates. “The annual community fund concept was introduced within our family business as a practical way of giving back to the communities we create,” he said. Mo’s go for a cause A close shave for four bus drivers has raised more than $4500 for Movember. At the beginning of this month, CDC Victoria drivers Ergun Cansever, David Hutton and Sarabjeet Singh promised to shave off their moustaches and beards if their colleagues could raise $100 per person. Fellow bus driver Steve Gado, who has sported a moustache since 1977 and a beard since 2004, unwittingly became the fourth member of the team when he joked that he would shave his facial hair off for $200 – and ended up raising $611 to become the biggest individual fundraiser. The four men braved the big shave last
Tuesday, with fellow driver Pedro Sakal doing the honours. All up, CDC raised more than $4500 over the month of November, including more than $1900 from the shave off. Mr Gado said he was still getting used to his new look. “I’m feeling like it’s not my own face on my face,” he said. “Every time I walk past a window or a mirror, it’s almost like somebody else is walking beside me.” Movember raises money and awareness for men’s health. Homestead rebirth a slow show By Charlene Macaulay Point Cook Homestead is up to two years away from being reopened to the public, three years after its former tenants went into liquidation. Parks Victoria will spruce up the homestead in an effort to secure a new long-term tenant for the site, with plans to decommission the septic tanks and establish a new sewer connection, install new toilets, improve airconditioning, tend to other electrical issues and carry out structural repairs on the buildings.
Despite initial plans to have the site up and running by the end of this year, it is expected to take another one to two years before the work is complete and the homestead is reopened. A spokesman for Parks Victoria said that while the plans had remained the same, the timing has been extended to allow for a more stringent evaluation of work to be undertaken. The spokesman said the work was expected to begin in early next year once all tenders had been awarded and heritage compliance needs met.

Going white for a cause Wyndham council’s civic centre was a sea of white last week when up to 300 of its staff donned white T-shirts to mark White Ribbon Day. The council called on residents to learn, reflect, educate and challenge a number of issues that contribute to violence against women and girls, and is supporting the Women’s Health West 16 Days Activist Challenge, which began on White Ribbon Day (November 25) and will run until Internatonal Human Rights Day (December 10). Kim McAliney, the council’s safer communities portfolio holder, said residents should challenge sexism in advertising and other forms of media, talk to men about healthy masculinity and question the advantages men experience because of their gender, such as the gender pay gap. “Learn to recognise victim blaming, learn about unconscious gender bias, learn about the concepts of gender equality, equity and
patriarchy, and learn about sexual consent, gender and power,” Cr McAliney said. “Use this time to also reflect on the impact of gender stereotypes on children, look for gender bias in movies and on the television, pay attention to women’s voices, and reflect on who does certain chores around the house. “Gender equity is everybody’s business.” Charlene Macaulay

Mayoral Column It is a great privilege to be elected as your Mayor for the next year. I’m very proud to continue a local government tradition in my family – on both sides. Many locals know that my great grandfather was the Shire President here, so I look forward to continuing our family commitment. Two years ago I ran for Council in the Iramoo Ward (centred around Werribee where I live) because I wanted to make a difference for the community I grew up in. Since then I’ve demonstrated that I always put our community first. So you can expect me to continue to be a tireless advocate and spokesperson for our City’s needs. I’m an independent and most of the time Council’s views will align with the views of senior MPs and Ministers. Sometimes they won’t. But you can expect me to always conduct myself constructively. I want to build frank yet strong relationships with decision makers. After all, they make a difference to the funding, programs and services we can attract to Wyndham. A mind over matter By Goya Dmytryshchak Kathy Lang is the name to remember. The Altona woman smashed a 12-year record at the Australian Open Memory Championships held in Melbourne last weekend. She also took third place for Australia. “I broke the 12-year national record for [remembering] 177 numbers in five minutes,” she said. “You’ve got five minutes to remember as many numbers as you can, and they come in numbers like one, six, seven, four, three – and I remembered 177 numbers in order.”

Preparing for the competition, which attracted entrants from as far as China, Japan and the US, Ms Lang hired a memory coach. “Because I’m in education and teaching and lecturing, I’m really interested in how to learn effectively,” she said. “It’s not doing this to impress anybody – it’s to demonstrate that it can be done. The human potential’s there. “The person that came first place would be studying around 12, 13 hours a day to get to that. “These are elite athletes. These people are like the superheroes – they’ve got amazing brains. “We’re looking at learning say, five or six decks of playing cards in five minutes.” Ms Lang likened her memory training to the styles of tennis legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

‘Tis the season to keep it safe By Charlene Macaulay Don’t cut corners in the workplace and get home safely this silly season. That’s the message from WorkSafe, which is calling on employers and employees to make safety a priority in the final weeks of 2018. According to WorkSafe statistics, more Victorian workers die in the weeks leading up to Christmas than at any other time of year, with more than 22 per cent of all
workplace fatalities in November and December. This year, 896 injury claims were logged between January 1 and October 31 in Wyndham, up slightly from 848 incidents over the same period last year, with musculoskeletal injuries – typically caused by manual handling tasks – topping the list. Among the reported incidents were: • A worker in Werribee injured his leg when he lost his footing and landed on a fence nail;
• A 17-year-old apprentice accidentally shot himself in his hand with a nail gun at a Point Cook construction site; • A Point Cook worker was carrying a piece of plasterboard when it broke and a jagged edge gashed his leg open, requiring 15 stitches; and • An electrical worker in Werribee received electrical flash burns to his hands and arms when he was removing a top cover of a high-voltage cabinet.
WorkSafe health and safety executive director Julie Nielsen said busy workloads and tight deadlines at this time of year were no excuse for workplaces to cut corners on safety. Ms Nielsen said last year five families lost loved ones in workplace accidents over November and December. “There is no situation where getting a job done is more important than coming home safely at the end of the day,� she said.
A big thing for college A performance that highlighted the Gurundji tribe’s fight for equality and land rights has earned Carranballac P-9 College a national Wakakirri award. The Point Cook school took out the Reconciliation Australia/Narragunnawali Story Award for From Little Things, Big Things Grow, which included the songs of Paul Kelly, Grow Kevin Carmody, Yothu Yindi and Ganga Girl. A group of 36 grade 6 students first performed the piece at a Wakakirri heat at The Clocktower Centre in Moonee Ponds in July, bagging a number of state awards, before being invited to perform at the Wakakirri National Performance Competition Night at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre. The school’s art, textiles and wood tech departments helped create costumes and props, while the performance was written, directed and choreographed by Koorie engagement support officer Judith Dalton-Walsh. “It was a pleasure to be involved with the production, being asked to give advice
and to see the students grasp the story with a full understanding of the concept,� Ms Dalton-Walsh said. Grade 6 student Joel said he was really proud the team had made it to national level and won. “I loved the experience of Wakakirri – it built up my confidence,� he said. “It is important – no matter what you look like or your colour, eveyone should be treated as equals.� Wakakirri is Australia’s largest annual performing arts event for primary and secondary schools. Diabetes support talks The Wyndham Diabetes Support Group will host a free forum to mark its 20th anniversary next week. The Hoppers Crossing forum will feature speakers including representatives from Diabetes Victoria, a GP, a diabetes patient and Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw. Convenor Bob Fairclough said the support group began in 2008 to provide diabetics with opportunities to share experiences, be informed about the latest information on the illness and hear from diabetes experts. This group meets every second Friday of the month at the Kelly Park Community Centre in Werribee from 10-11.30 am. “We’d like to encourage more people to attend,” Dr Fairclough said.
He said that the group would begin holding additional meetings next year at times more suited to people with jobs. He said those meetings would be held at Kelly Park, most likely on the third Thursday of the month from 7pm. The diabetes information forum will be held on Saturday, December 15, at the Central Park Community Centre, 80 Lonsdale Circuit, Hoppers Crossing from 10am-3pm. Thai woman loses visa appeal By Alesha Capone The visa of a Thai woman living in Truganina has been cancelled, after she was convicted of a number of crimes including drugs and weapons offences. The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) last month re-affirmed a decision by the Department of Home Affairs to cancel the 41-year-old woman’s visa. The tribunal heard the visa was cancelled because the woman – who was only identified by the pseudonym “GWSC” – did not pass a
character test under the Australian Migration Act, due to having a “substantial criminal record”. The tribunal heard that police stopped a vehicle in which the woman and a companion were travelling on September 1, 2015. Police discovered four bags of the drug ice in the vehicle. The woman was arrested and charged with trafficking, possessing a controlled weapon and dealing in property suspected of being the proceeds of crime. She was placed on bail and ordered to appear
at the Magistrates Court in November 2015. However, in September that year police searched the Truganina property where the woman and her partner were living and discovered 69 cannabis plants, 476.6 grams of dried cannabis, 12 ecstasy tablets, 6.7 grams of ice, cash, two handguns, a Taser, digital scales, snap-lock bags and an instruction book on growing marijuana. In 2016, the woman was sentenced to two years and nine months jail after being convicted on a number of charges including cultivating a narcotic plant in a commercial
quantity, possessing an unregistered handgun, committing an indictable offence while on bail, possessing a drug of dependence and dealing property suspected to be the proceeds of crime. Last month, during the AAT hearing, the woman submitted a statement which said her former partner had “coerced her into taking the fall for the charges” in return for protection and care for her son. But the tribunal issued a decision to cancel the woman’s visa due to “the nature and seriousness” of her conduct.
Festive feast a cracker Young people hosted a Christmas lunch in Wyndham Vale on Monday, raising funds for an animal shelter. Youths from the Australian Employment Training Solutions (AETS) Youth Jobs PaTH program, which helps people aged 18 to 25 gain employment skills, organised the lunch to raise money for TLC Rescue Inc, an animal shelter located in Hoppers Crossing. AETS trainer Jennie Purdie-Smith said the lunch, held at Iramoo Community Centre, was attended by about 40 people including several members of an over-50s group based at the centre. Ms Purdie-Smith said the program’s young people “did an amazing job” in putting together the lunch. Some of them had never cooked before, yet the enthusiastic crew created zucchini slices, penne cacciatore, chicken and mango salad, sandwiches, vegan meals, Christmas treats,
homemade cupcakes and Christmas pudding with brandy custard. Ms Purdie-Smith said they organised a silent auction, with prizes donated by their families and local businesses. A white elephant stall and a Powerpoint presentation showcasing dogs helped by TLC Rescue were other highlights. Best-dressed prizes were awarded for the Christmas-themed outfits and representatives from TLC Rescue Inc also gave a presentation at the lunch. Wyndham City is proposing to name a new neighbourhood community centre being built immediately north of Chapman Drive, at 19 Communal Road, Wyndham Vale. It is proposed that the building be named “Wunggurrwil Dhurrung Centre” (pronounced Woong-gur-will Durr-ung) which means “Strong Heart.”

Pupils have great tastes Thomas Chirnside Primary School pupils have been on a tasty world “tour”. During the Werribee school’s annual Food Fair last month, pupils, families and staff members all helped prepare some delicious fare. Families and businesses donated ingredients, which were added to those grown in the school’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden. Among the dishes were mee goreng, falafel, soba noodles, gnocchi, curries and rice paper
rolls. Attendees also enjoyed student artwork in the Food for Thought exhibition. Principal Bev Thompson said celebrating the school community’s cultures was a treat. “Everyone worked hard and had a lot of fun,” she said. “We were very pleased that this annual event is growing and involving so many people who are interested in the school and what we are able to do.” Alesha Capone

MY WYNDHAM Bruce Boddington was named as a Wyndham Community Volunteer Award winner this year, in the category of environment or sustainability. He started the Point Cook Open Spaces group and is chair of the NatureWest board. He chats with Alesha Capone. How long have you lived in Wyndham, and how did you get involved in so many environmental groups? We moved here about four years ago, to Point Cook, we had lived in Caulfield South for about 30 years before that. We moved here to be closer to family. We rented a house in Featherbook and I went for a walk, and I saw thousands of little bits of litter. I rang up the council and said I’d like to do something about it. I ended up taking part in the council’s Building Blocks Community Leadership Program in 2015. As part of the course, we had to do a project. I already knew that I wanted my project to be about picking up litter in Point Cook, and that’s how Point Cook Open Spaces was born. It’s gone from strength to strength since then. We run between six to 10 litter clean-ups in Point Cook every year. We also do re-vegetation work in the wetlands, funded by Melbourne Water.
I guess the challenge of getting a group together, keeping it viable and doing activities together. I like the orgnisational side of it. I’m still working part-time in my own business, and I put in about 20 to 30 hours of volunteering per week. I enjoy the on-ground work we do, including quite a lot of planting. I am also mentoring two other groups. What do you like about Point Cook? Point Cook is good, I’m involved in the Point Cook Action Group. It’s a suburb, or community, that really gets out and does stuff.

the edge of a rural and urban area, I quite enjoy that. I drive down to Little River, as I’m involved with a Landcare group down there – I’m originally from the country, so I like the open space. Wyndham council do a fantastic job
supporting volunteers and they’re in the process of doing a long-term volunteer strategy. There is a working group helping out with that, which I’m on. Building Blocks is fantastic, I’m still involved with the program and people. We often help each other out.

Werribee residents this week welcomed the Shire council’s move to investigate the proposal to use the old Wandene Hospital for municipal purposes, as magnificent. Situated in Synnot Street on an acre or so of land, the building is an old homestead built by an early settler to the district, Francis Beamish.
Services for 41 intellectually disabled people at the Wyndham Centre in Werribee were shut down after teaching staff went on an indefinite strike on Monday. The centre was one of 77 adult units in Victoria to close its door at 3.20pm because of a dispute over poor wage levels.
Wyndham council wants VicRoads to build a 23-kilmotre super highway from Werribee to the Western Ring Road, to ease peak-hour traffic on the Princes Highway. The council plan is for the new road to leave the Princes Highway about half-way between the Western interchange and Little River Road and take a northerly route to Ballan Road near Hobbs Road.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a restaurant staking its claim in Sunshine DaLat Hill Sunshine has a Vietnamese name, but there’s no rice paper rolls or pho here. Instead, they are going their own sweet way, developing a niche based around steak, along with regular cafe fare. Here you can get T-bone, ribeye, scotch fillet and the like at fair prices. But the place’s big drawcard, one designed to get new customers through the door yet also remain an always available “special”, is the Special Rump Steak for $10. We are a little surprised to be asked how we want our meat cooked, as we figure the $10 steak will be of the ultra-thin variety sometimes served as part of Vietnamese steak-and-eggs and for which precise cooking instructions are pretty much irrelevant. So … medium rare for us both. How good can a $10 steak be? The answer, at DaLat Hill Sunshine, is … just fine. Sure, you’ll not be chowing down here on prime, big-bucks beef, but our steaks are enjoyable nonetheless. And they’re nicely sized for our Saturday lunch, steak not normally being something we would otherwise ever consider ordering for anything other than an evening meal. And then, only very rarely. But what makes our meals more than just adequately satisfying – and propels them into realms of bargain pleasure – is the care taken with the accompaniments and the presentation. The mashed potato is very, very good.

FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? PH: Here’s the thing. I’m no great foodie. I’m not a collector of fine restaurants and fine wines and fine dining experiences. My last regular cooking I suppose happened many decades ago. I seemed to have more time them. I used to cook – we’re talking here back in the late ’60s and ’70s when food was different. You could add dollops of cream and this and that and the other and somehow it didn’t go to the waist. I don’t know how that was! I’m thinking back to a time when sweet wines were the go. Switzerland’s little gift to the world was of course the fondue … did you ever have those strands of hot cheese going down the chin while everyone’s digging in with their forks? That’s when I stopped cooking actually. FB: What is your favourite food? PH: I like Japanese food. It seems very simple and fresh. FB: What do you like to drink? PH: These days I rarely will have an (alcoholic) drink. Very rarely indeed because – I don’t know – I’m too busy.

FB: Are you a coffee drinker? PH: Oh yes! Once upon a time there was Bushell’s coffee with chicory essence. We’re talking the ’50s here. We’re talking about when Arnott’s SAO biscuits came in big tins! These days of course, you can have soyacino, moccacino, skinny cinos, latte … chai … something chai … you’ve got to have chai every now and again. Remember the thermos? I’d take a thermos of instant coffee with me into the studio every night and sip at it during the news. Wherever it comes from, I’m happy with that. I also like a cup of tea, too. Without sugar. Without milk. Russian Caravan Tea is my favourite. FB: Have you got a sweet tooth? PH: Yes. I keep getting lectures at the gym and from the doctor (about sugar). Give me one of those ice creams at the McDrive Thru will you? And hurry up about it!

FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? We all feel like family anyway, so that would actually be a nice extended family meal.
BURIED TREASURE
I’m sure many of us – as children – remember the excitement of being on the receiving end of a birthday cake from the Women’s Weekly Cookbook. Back in the ’70s, I remember the Dolly Varden cake being a regular staple of birthday celebrations for little girls … a Barbie or Cindy doll speared feet-first into a pudding-shaped cake which – with a bit of icing, silver cacous and a pinch of imagination – then became the doll’s skirt. My personal favourite, though, was the treasure chest – a rectangular box-shaped cake slathered in chocolate frosting (swirled with a fork to give it the look and texture of wood) and overflowing with lollies and coins. All my life I have wanted an excuse to make one, and the other day I did, for a dear friend of mine who loves the childhood memories these kinds of cakes evoke. Who knew Curly Wurly chocolate bars could double so well as leather straps? It was so much fun to do, and gratefully received. Have you made any cakes from the Women’s Weekly Birthday Cake Cookbook? How to distinguish an A-grade property In a softening market, property experts often talk about about how ‘A-grade’ properties are still selling well, but ‘C-grade’ properties might be struggling. But what’s the difference between these grades, and are A-grade properties really downturn-proof? What is an A-grade property? Located close to shops, amenities and the local “village”, A-grade properties are found on good streets and never main or arterial roads. Usually they also had a “very good aspect” – north to rear being the best. Transport connectivity is also a key factor, and school zones are critical, according to Melbourne buyers’ agent Wendy Chamberlain from Chamberlain Property Advocates. “Within the apartment market, buyers might also be drawn to apartments constructed by a well-regarded builder, or highly sustainable buildings. “There are certain styles or types that will always be considered better,” Ms Chamberlain said, adding older apartments built in historical styles were very desirable. “A smaller boutique block will be far better regarded than a massive tower.” Which properties get a B? Properties lacking parking might be B-grade and those further from the local village might get marked down. Well-located properties in need of a renovation might get a B. B-grade properties generally have most of the right fundamentals and could in some cases be renovated to an A-grade standard. Buyers often targeted B-grade properties for their potential value.

What makes a property C-grade? Lesser-grade properties might be in or adjacent to a light industrial area, in a suburb just starting to gentrify or on a main or arterial road. They could also be homes built on steep or battle-axe blocks.
Finance issues can put buyers off lower grade properties, as banks may avoid lending for a home that would be harder to sell in the long run. Unlucky C-Grade properties were the ones most severely affected by the

SPORT Twin wins put Point Cook in top spot Point Cook has swooped on top spot in Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 after an impressive double shot of victories at the weekend. The Warriors cruised to an 81-run victory over Sunshine Heights at Ainsworth Reserve on Saturday to set up a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash with Sunshine in a second-round catch-up game on Sunday. With first place up for grabs, Point Cook rose to the occasion, toppling Sunshine by four wickets on the road at a damp Dempster Park. The Warriors’ bowlers were irresistible, restricting Sunshine to a manageable 7-98 off 31 overs on a rain-affected day. Tight bowling from Gurbaksh Khaira (2-15), James Doolan (2-20), Aaron Whear (1-9) and Sarwan Kumar (1-19) had the Warriors on top at the game’s mid-point. In the conditions, a target of 99 was not going to be easy, but the Warriors found a way. After an early struggle saw them in trouble at 4-29, they steadied through James Peterson (35no) and Khaira (20). A late flurry from Whear (13no) and the Warriors had regained the ladder lead.
Seabrook had a mixed weekend. The Saints lost by five wickets away to Williamstown Imperials at Fearon Reserve on Saturday. But they broke through for their first win of the season on Sunday, annihilating Footscray United by nine wickets at Bruce Comben Reserve. Set 62 for victory, Seabrook passed the target in 12.3 overs. In division 2, Werribee Centrals beat two sides around them on the ladder to move from the lower reaches of the table into fourth. On Saturday, Centrals had a relatively comfortable four-wicket win over Williamstown CYMS at Galvin Park. In Sunday’s catch-up game, Centrals took care of business against Altona Roosters, winning a low-scoring affair by 19 runs at Langshaw Reserve. In a division 4 game in progress, Wyndhamvale posted 164 off 50.5 overs against Sunshine YCW at Wyndham Vale South Reserve. Rumour had Jack’s Bulldog teammate Shane Biggs joining him, but he has signed with North Heidelberg. Big Red will be awesome if his knee stands up to the vagaries of local footy grounds. He showed in his limited appearances for the Bulldogs what a dominant presence he is in attack. ■ Redpath is the biggest name on the clearance page but not the most surprising. I was intrigued to see Nayef Hamad move to Werribee Districts, from Spotswood, and Daniel Bunworth leaving Wyndhamvale. Hamad is a listed Footscray VFL player and if that continues he will have divided commitments. Bunworth moves to Point Cook after coaching the Falcons for the past couple of years. He is the sort of player that will be very beneficial to the WRFL Bulldogs in their adjustment to division one. ■ The Werribee and Hoppers Crossing cricketers can be well pleased with the results of their recent Movember charity game, which raised $4500. The Tigers took home the shield, giving them a 3-2 lead in the meetings. The Tigers are feasting on the back of some great batting from Matt Dean, who followed up his 113 with a match-winning 97 at the weekend. Brother Sean chimed in with 53 to make it a big weekend for the family and Travis starred for Footscray with an 80. On a sad note, former president and life member Lou Tardrew passed away last week following a short illness. Lou’s efforts and passion for both the Werribee Cricket and Football clubs will be long remembered. Condolences to his wife Margaret, family and friends.
Giants pitch in for win By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Giants have made an emphatic statement with a series win over Newport Rams in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2. In an enthralling three-game series, the Giants won the final two games, including an epic 16-inning game two. The Giants clinched the series with a 6-3 win away at KC White Reserve on Sunday. Giants coach John Curnow described the final game as “a good-quality contest right the way through”. Werribee held a slender one-run lead for most of the game thanks to a stellar performance from Trent Pantalleresco.
He pitched seven strong innings and produced an early two-run home run that gave the Giants that lead. After breaking out last season, Pantallaresco seems to have taken his game to another level this summer. “He performed well last year and he’s continuing on with that,” Curnow said. “He puts everything into every pitch. He throws hard, he’s got a good slider and keeps all the hitters off balance. “We made a couple of errors behind him, but he stood up when he had to and got hitters out for us.” Wes DeJong was also effective in both the batters box and on the mound for Werribee. He pitched a scoreless inning in the eighth
and hit a crucial two-out single that drove in two runs to create a handy buffer. That huge eighth inning for the Giants broke the game open. “We got our lead-off on with a hit,” Curnow said. “Then one of our blokes went to drop a bunt, they tried to pick him off and the throw got away, so he got around to third. “We were able to get another two on with walks and they got two outs, then Wes came up and got the clutch hit for us.” Closer Guillermo Salazar completed the job for Werribee in the ninth inning. The Giants (11-1) will take on the Port Melbourne Mariners (5-7) in a three-game series before the Christmas break.

Werribee finds its latest recruit close to home

Werribee has shopped locally for the latest addition to its playing list for the 2019 Victorian Football League season. The club has signed up exciting youngster Oscar Junker, who played the bulk of his junior career a stone’s throw away from Watton Street with Werribee Districts. The 20-year-old former North Melbourne utility was delisted by the AFL club at the end of last season after two years on the rookie list and opted to continue his career with Werribee. “I’m super excited to be part of the club,” Junker said. “I know a fair few of the boys through my local club and the local area. I grew up in this area, so it’s just a good fit.” Junker also spent time at Avalon Airport Oval in his first year at North Melbourne through the Werribee-North Melbourne alignment. He was selected with pick 28 in the 2016 rookie draft after impressing with the Western
Jets in the TAC Cup, but managed to pull on the boots for only two games in his AFL rookie year after breaking his leg in a practice match. He made it back in time to play in Werribee’s final development league game of the season – his only appearance in a Werribee jumper to date. Junker had a more settled 2018 season, featuring in 17 of a possible 18 games and kicking 13 goals in North Melbourne’s inaugural VFL team. Still, it was not enough for the Kangaroos to keep him on their list and they delivered him the bad news of his delisting at season’s end. Junker was understandably unhappy about his delisting, but is committed to playing good football for Werribee in the hope of attracting further interest from AFL recruiters. “Getting delisted from North Melbourne was obviously disappointing, but I’ve dusted myself

Tiger brothers a big hit By Lance Jenkinson The Dean machine was firing on all cylinders in Werribee’s 55-run win over Altona in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association at Grant Reserve on Saturday. Brothers Matt and Shaun Dean produced a 148-run partnership at the top of the order for the Tigers, laying the foundation for victory in the south-west first XI match. Matt fell three runs short of a ton, caught on the boundary for 97, while Shaun was out caught for 53. Werribee captain Tim O’Brien said the big partnership put his side in front. “Altona had won their last two and we knew they were playing some good cricket, so it was important that we got off to a good start,” O’Brien said. “It was a pretty good platform to build from to get a competitive total.” Werribee went on to make 3-241 off its allotted 45 overs. “Matty was going at a good clip to start with and was probably the dominant scorer,” O’Brien said. “Once Shaun got his eye in, he 54 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 5, 2018
was getting his ones and twos and holding up an end.” Matt’s form to start this season has been spectacular. The newlywed has made 273 runs at an average of 136.5. He has done that in just three innings after missing the opening three rounds while on his overseas honeymoon. “He’s had a pretty good start to the year with a 60, a 90 and a 100-odd, so hopefully he can continue that on,” O’Brien said. “It was pretty windy, but he was picking his areas where to hit [against Altona]. He was smart hitting with the wind when he went over the top. He had a couple of chances, but he went on with it in the end.” With the Dean brothers back in the pavilion, Werribee needed other batsmen to join the party. O’Brien played a leading role with a better than a run a ball 44, with Chris Hennessy hitting 19 off 19. “It was important that once those two guys went out that we kept on turning the strike over to get a 240-odd score,” O’Brien said. “Having wickets in hand allowed us to get some more
scoring towards the end of the innings and build a competitive total.” Despite seeing out its 45 overs, Altona fell well short of the target. The A’s finished on 6-186 after being restricted by tight Werribee bowling. The most damage was done by Tiger spinner Michael Kelly, who took 3-37 off nine, including the major scalps of Altona skipper Adam Yates and opener David Kinsella. “Mick played a really important role for us,” O’Brien said. “It was a very strong breeze that he bowled into and he mixed up his pace beautifully.” O’Brien took 2-38 off nine, while Brad Apps snared 1-23 off seven. With both teams sitting outside the top six prior to the game, it was a huge victory for Werribee that rocketed it to fourth. Meanwhile, Hoppers Crossing copped a 35-run loss to Brighton at Beach Oval on Saturday. The Cats’ gutsy run chase of 281 was no match for Brighton’s 2-316. Luke Goegan was superb for Hoppers Crossing with 105 off 71 balls, but it was to no avail.
Liston Tennis Club has claimed a three-peat of titles in Tennis Victoria women’s premier division. The Williamstown-based team, which is the lone western suburbs representative in the competition, climbed to the top of the mountain once again after a three rubbers to one upset of minor premier MCC Glen Iris Valley in the final hosted by MCC on Saturday. The winning score was 3-7-51 to 1-2-35. The first rubber of the match set Liston on its way to victory. In a hard-fought doubles encounter, Liston’s Destanee Aiava and Alison Bai pipped Jaimee Fourlis and Zoe Hives 7-5, 7-6. As you would expect from the favourite, MCC Glen Iris Valley fought back in the second doubles rubber. Liston’s Isabelle Wallace and Alexandra Bozovic overcame a slow start to take the encounter with MCC’s Astra Sharma and Jessica Moore to a tiebreaker. Sharma-Moore took out the match in an epic tiebreaker 11-9. At one rubber apiece, it was time for Aiava to show why Liston was so excited to add her to the team. Aiava turned the tie in her side’s favour with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 win over Moore in the singles. It was then over to Wallace to secure the title for Liston. Wallace had to fight every step of the way to overcome a gallant Sharma, eventually taking the singles rubber 10-8 in a tiebreaker.
