There’s a bear in there It’s going to be a beary good Christmas this year. Salvation Army Employment Plus Work for the Dole participants in St Albans have made nearly 250 teddy bears for the Wyndham City Salvation Army Corps’ Christmas Toy appeal, which will go to the children of families in need over the festive season. Envision Employment Work for the Dole supervisor Chris said the group of 15 was initially tasked with building 200 signature bears in 26 weeks using donated materials for the toy appeal. He said despite a slow start due to sewing skill levels and language barriers, the group met its target long before deadline – and then made an extra 48 bears to donate. Work for the dole advisor Kelly Meehan said even though the group project had now finished, a number of the participants have chosen to stay on as volunteers to keep making the bears. “Our participants have displayed a tremendous work ethic as the quality and quantity of their output shows,” she said. Wyndham Salvos captain Kim Haworth added: “The whole aspect of it is to teach people who are long-term unemployed new skills to be able to find work.” KELLY MEEHAN

Pledge for day shift PSOs By Charlene Macaulay Protective Services Officers (PSOs) will man Werribee train station during the day from next year under a Liberal Party plan to curb crime at transport hubs. The Liberal Party has promised it will assign a second shift of PSOs to Melbourne’s most dangerous train stations, including at Werribee, which will run from 10am-6pm if it wins this month’s election. Western Metropolitan MP Bernie Finn said in the past four years, harassment and public
nuisance offences had gone up by 127 per cent at Werribee train station, while assaults were up 20.4 per cent. “Werribee is one of 20 stations that has one of the worst crime rates,” Mr Finn said. “I’ve been told by a number of people that Werribee is not a pleasant place to be. “This is a win-win for the local community … it will bring peace of mind to people, especially women and kids.” Liberal candidate for Werribee, Gayle Murphy, said she had seen first-hand the
impact PSOs had had on making commuters feel safe at night. All of Wyndham’s train stations – both metropolitan and V/Line – are staffed with PSOs every night from 6pm until the last train. Werribee and Hoppers Crossing were among the first stations to get PSOs in 2012 when they were rolled out under the then-Liberal government. Last year, PSOs were given new powers to target anti-social behaviour and crime at stations, in particular the power to arrest a person who has breached their parole, conduct searches for illicit drugs and request details Liberal candidate Gayle Murpy and Liberal MP from people who have witnessed a crime. Libs, Labor top ballot papers as election looms The major parties have topped the ballot papers for Wyndham’s three lower house seats, after nominations closed last Friday. Of the eight candidates contesting Werribee, incumbent Labor MP Tim Pallas scored top billing followed by independents Thanh Nga Ly and Pratibha Sharma, sitting Western Metropolitan MP Rachel Carling-Jenkins, Joe Garra, who is running as an independent, Jay Dessi from the Greens, tram driver and Democratic Labour Party candidate Kathryn Breakwell and the Liberals Gayle Murphy. A swing of 15.3 per cent is needed to unseat Mr Pallas from Werribee. In Tarneit, former Wyndham councillor and Liberal candidate Glenn Goodfellow has received the top spot on the ballot as he chases a 14.6 per cent Labor margin. Mr Goodfellow is one of seven candidates chasing the seat left vacant by Labor’s Telmo Languiller who announced he would not be
standing after controversy in 2017 surrounding almost $40,000 of living allowances. Independent candidates Zulfi Syed, Arnav Sati, Wyndham councillor Aaron An, Harkamal Singh Batth, Beck SheffieldBrotherton from the Greens and Labor’s Sarah Connolly are also contesting Tarneit. Over in Altona, five candidates are vying for the seat including incumbent Jill Hennessy, who holds a 12.6 per cent margin. Ms Hennessy received the fifth position on the ballot, while the Liberals’ Christian Martinu got the first position, followed by Wyndham councillor and independent Tony Hooper, independent candidate Maria Aylward and Emma-Jane Byrne from the Greens. Forensic police spent the weekend inspecting a property in Werribee, home to the parents of Bourke Street terrorist Hassan Khalif Shire Ali. Dozens of police swarmed the property on Saturday morning following Friday night’s CBD attack in which the 30 year-old Somali-born man stabbed and killed Melbourne cafe owner Sisto Malaspina and injured two others after setting fire to a ute containing gas cylinders. Shire Ali was shot in the chest by police while lunging at officers with a knife and died later in hospital. Officers executed search warrants on Saturday morning at homes in Werribee and Meadow Heights. Residents in the Werribee street, where Shire Ali’s parents live, say they woke early to dozens of police swarming the property. “I could see flashing lights from my bedroom window and then I heard police yelling into a megaphone and I got out of bed and saw police storming into the house,” one resident said. The woman, who has lived in the street for more than a decade and spoke on the condition of anonymity, said she believed Shire Ali’s parents and sister lived in the house. On Saturday morning, the small brick house was under heavy police guard and had been cordoned off with police tape. It’s believed family members of Shire Ali were interviewed by police inside the house. Forensic police wearing face masks took photographs as they searched three cars parked in the driveway.
Other heavily armed specialist police officers scoured the outside of the house and front garden. A man and woman, believed to be family members of Shire Ali, arrived at the house shortly before 11.30am. The duo parked a short distance away from the house, before the woman, who was wearing a bright purple hijab, attempted to walk into the driveway, but was stopped by police.

The two people refused to comment when approached by media representatives. After speaking with police briefly, they got back in the car and drove off. Just before 2pm, a young man, believed to be a relative of Shire Ali, came out of the house with his face hidden beneath a grey hooded jumper. Earlier in the afternoon, another man arrived at the house in a dark coloured sedan, but was ushered away by police. The man said he was a friend of Shire Ali’s father. “I’ve known him 30 years – he is a kind and respected man in the Somali community,” he said. “I came here today because I know he is so upset about what has happened and I wanted to visit to see if he was OK.”

T
he events of last Friday in Bourke Street will haunt us all for some time. As disturbing and distressing as the images were, I wonder if we are becoming desensitised to violence. The footage of dozens of people within metres of the incident, all with phones in hand – seemingly more intent on getting film than getting out of there – is a measure of our siege mentality. The explosions, the knife-wielding assailant, police with arms drawn and the cacophony of sirens did little to curb the onlookers from capturing the moment. Footage of the victim lying on the footpath was shared on social media, as well as the moment police shot the assailant. This was eyewitness news – but not via commercial television. Remember this was not a Hollywood movie – this was real life in the middle of the city we live in. Yet people were filming it like it was the local school play. The tone changed when the victim went from nameless bystander to a Melbourne icon – Sisto Malaspina from Pellegrini’s.
Any loss in these circumstances is tragic. The whole event is traumatic, yet it seems to have become something of a platform for many to legitimise their anger and spew volumes of hateful words and thoughts across social media directed at various people and organisations. Making sense out of these types of events is near impossible for me and many others I imagine. I am saddened by the event and the aftermath. I am concerned that the gravity of such acts is being dissipated in a sea of social media vitriol and lost in a sound cloud of mobile phone videos alongside animal tricks and media bloopers. We need clarity free from phones, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and everything else that invades our thinking time - to reflect on this tragedy and similar ones of recent times. How do we explain this to our children when we have trouble grasping it ourselves? We know we cannot live in fear but nor can we live in a cocooned, virtual world. The deaths were real. This happened in our city. Sadly that is reality. â– â–

New centre name
Wyndham’s newest community centre will have a name steeped in meaning. Wunggurrwil Dhurrung Centre has been chosen as the name for the Wyndham Aboriginal Community Centre in Wyndham Vale. The name means “strong heart� in the Wadawurrung language. It is pronounced Woong-gur-will Durr-ung.

Second time lucky for pokies bid By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council has approved a Tigers Clubhouse expansion that will add another 10 poker machines to the venue, one month after knocking back the same plans. Four out of the six available councillors last week approved plans for a $1.69 million redevelopment of the Werribee Football Club-owned venue that includes 10 new poker machines, a new storage area and courtyard and extension of the liquor licence area.
The club received approval for the new machines from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Regulation in May, but also needed planning approval from the council. Councillor Mia Shaw said while she did not support an increase in poker machines, councillors had a duty to assess applications on their planning merit in accordance with the Wyndham Planning Scheme, and this one had met all the relevant guidelines. “We are assessing a planning application for the use of the building, not for whether there
should be an increase in poker machines,” she said. “If we were to use our power to vote against this application before us tonight, the applicant would take the matter to VCAT and ratepayers’ funds would be used to defend council’s position, which I feel is irresponsible.” But fellow councillor Josh Gilligan said knocking back the planning application would send a powerful message that Wyndham did not need more poker machines. The decision comes a month after councillors
voted against a council officer recommendation to approve the planning permit application for the venue. When Star Weekly asked Wyndham council how the motion could be voted on a second time, city operations director Stephen Thorpe insisted that a resolution was not made at the October meeting, despite an online recording of the meeting and the minutes of that meeting clearly showing that the motion to approve the planning permit recommendation was lost.

Werribee auction rates slump By Charlene Macaulay Going … going … gone! Property auctions are on the decline because of uncertainty in the market and an abundance of houses for sale. That’s the word from YPA Werribee director Bassam Tofaili, who said his agency had already experienced a decrease in the number of vendors opting to sell their home at auction. Mr Tofaili said vendors were finding they were getting better results by selling privately.
“In the last two-and-a-half years auctions have been the way to sell because of the demand,” he said. “Obviously with strong demand there’s competition and the banks were giving money to anybody so people were confident in getting unconditional approval and were going to auctions and bidding at auctions. “Now, the banks are telling everyone to do subject to finance [when bidding] and there’s uncertainty in the market.
“There’s no competitive tension with buyers at the moment because there’s so much available on the market.” According to the Real Estate Institute of Victoria, the number of auctions in Wyndham this year to date (621) is slightly lower compared to the same time last year (725). However, the clearance rate has dropped from 81.9 per cent last year to 66.9 per cent. REIV chief executive Gil King said: “Real
Estate Institute of Victoria data shows that 81 per cent of sales in Wyndham have been private sales compared with 86 per cent in 2017, but private sales usually take longer to report so the figure is likely to be higher than 81 per cent.” However, Ray White Werribee director Michelle Chick said her office continues to do more auctions than private sales, with up to 80 per cent of clients preferring to put their properties under the hammer.
Cool kid, top company Point Cook’s Mahnoor Talpur has put her talents to the test as a contestant on SBS’s Child Genius. Created in association with Australian Mensa, Child Genius aims to find the country’s brightest child. After seeing an advertisement, Mahnoor applied and undertook a round of challenging auditions, competing with more than 1000 other bright young minds. The 12-year-old was then selected as one of 19 contestants for the show. Mahnoor said she was grateful to have been involved in the program. “I wasn’t expecting to go that far and be a part of the competition, but it was a really cool experience,” she said. “I made lots of new friendships. Because the atmosphere was so welcoming, it was really nice to be a part of the show. It was like a family – we all supported each other.” The contestants were quizzed on a variety of topics including spelling, English and history.
Mahnoor’s strengths are in mathematics and memory, her interests are varied. She enjoys playing netball, competes in athletics, is an avid reader and has a love of swimming and climbing. Mahnoor said she had always had encouragement and support from her mother, Anmoila, who has always placed importance on education for her children. Anmoila was by Manhoor’s side through the competition process. “I knew she could withhold the pressure, I knew she was strong enough,” she said. “I thought, ‘OK let her go – she can do it’. Postcodes top diversity stats By Alesha Capone The 3030 and 3029 postcodes are the most multicultural in Victoria, according to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. A report into data from the 2016 Census, conducted by financial comparison website Finder.com.au, has found the 3030 postcode – which covers Point Cook, Werribee, Werribee South, Quandong and Derrimut – has residents who identify as being from 148 different nations. The 3029 postcode, which takes in Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina, is home to
people from 138 countries. The 3023 postcode, which includes Caroline Springs and Deer Park, placed third with its residents representing 136 nations. According to the report, of the residents who live within the 3030 area, about 55,000 were born in Australia and more than 40,000 were born overseas. Within 3030, there were 54,374 people born in Australia, 6855 born in India, 3626 born in China, 3337 born in New Zealand and 2837 born in England. Finder.com.au spokeswoman Bessie Hassan said in the 3030 postcode, there was also a
“strong community of people from some of the world’s smaller countries”. “For example, 160 residents were born in Timor Leste, 247 in Bosnia and Herzegovina and 115 in El Salvador,” she said. Within the 3029 postcode, 46,318 people said they were born in Australia, followed by 12,927 from India, 3577 from New Zealand, 3247 from the Philippines and 1490 from England. Ms Hassan said that within the 3030 and 3029 postcodes, the least-represented countries included Botswana, Moldova, Cuba, Qatar, American Samoa, Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal.

Big impact in Little River Mike Paproth is making a difference at Little River Primary School. He began volunteering at the school during May this year, through EdConnect. The not-for-profit organisation runs a statewide program in which volunteers support pupils with subjects such as numeracy, reading and science. The volunteers also help schools with gardening, in the canteen or library. Within Wyndham, EdConnect has volunteers at 10 schools, including Little River Primary School, where Mr Paproth works with children in prep. “Now that I’m retired, this volunteering role has really given me something to look forward to each week,” Mr Paproth said. “I love volunteering because the children are so warm and welcoming and very enthusiastic.
“It’s nice to be part of their learning journey and it’s not always academic learning, it could mean learning how to unpack lunch or how to tie shoelaces.” Mr Paproth encouraged other Wyndham residents, who can spare a couple of hours every week, to get involved with EdConnect. “This has been a really enjoyable experience for me and I highly recommend it,” he said. Little River Primary School principal Pamela Heane described Mr Paproth as “an asset in the classroom”. “Mike has made a significant difference in the classroom where he volunteers,” she said. Ready to paint Watton Street Plaza red Get set to be taken into a dream-like world, filled with curious characters, live performances, a pop-up gallery and unexpected spaces. Werribee’s Watton Street Plaza is set to be transformed later this month into RED ARCADE, a highly immersive artistic and performance festival. The festival has been created specifically for Watton Street Plaza by leading creatives Neil Thomas and David Wells. Wyndham council’s co-ordinator of arts, culture and events, Donna Aston, said: “RED ARCADE is a large-scale community engagement arts project unlike anything seen in Wyndham previously. Our arts and culture team are working with the community to transform Watton Street Plaza into a creative hub with performance, art and participation to the max and of course something for everybody. “Neil and David are national arts treasures. Tower dials up resident anger By Charlene Macaulay Hoppers Crossing residents have expressed their dismay at plans for a phone tower at Hoppers Crossing Reserve on Morris Road. They are calling on Wyndham council and the telecommunication provider to consider alternative locations for the tower. In August, Wyndham council called on the community to have its say on the proposed Vodafone and Optus towers along Clearwood Drive, Truganina; Howqua Way, Manor Lakes;
McGrath Road, Werribee; Jamieson Way, Point Cook; Morris Road, Hoppers Crossing; Saltwater Promenade, Point Cook; and Station Street, Little River. The towers will be on council-owned open spaces, sports fields or community centres and will fill mobile coverage gaps. Of the 14 objections received, 13 raised concerns about the proposed tower at Hoppers Crossing Reserve on Morris Road. Speaking at last week’s council meeting, Hoppers Crossing resident Sandra Kerr said

introduced more than 4000 people to lawn bowls in the past three years alone. “Many people have time on their hands and skills that have been developed, often over many years, but have issues filling in their time and need to get involved in something to occupy their minds and keep active,” she said. “I was in that position prior to volunteering. Campaign win marks 20 years The Wyndham community found its voice in its fight against plans for a toxic dump, writes Charlene Macaulay. In July 1995, CSR advised Wyndham commissioners of its plans for a toxic dump and waste management precinct for the quarry next door to the Wests Road tip. What followed was a concerted three-year community campaign that resulted in CSR throwing in the towel and selling the quarry to Wyndham council following protracted pre-court negotiations. November 13 was the 20th anniversary of that well-fought victory, and Werribee Residents Against Toxic Dumps member Harry van Moorst celebrated the milestone yesterday with a small dinner with some of the core activists of that campaign. Mr van Moorst believes a 15,000-strong protest at Werribee Racecourse following the government’s May 1998 decision to approve the toxic dump – despite years of rampant community opposition – was the turning point for the whole campaign. “I think they realised after that they didn’t have a chance,” he said. “There are a number of people who still remember it, who were very involved in it, and there’s a lot of others who are benefiting from the victory. “One of the important developments of that is that is showed if a community stands up for itself, it has a good chance of winning. We saw that with the juvenile detention centre. “I think it gives people a bit of optimism about the fact that, despite all the bureaucracies and everything else, people can still make a difference.” Lalor MP Joanne Ryan, who was a WRADT member and member of the Environmental Effects Statement consultative committee, said

it was a landmark campaign that taught the community how to use its voice. She said the group used a number of measures – including petitions, rallies, storming the CSR annual general meeting, a marginal seats campaign during the state
election, a campaign to stop buying CSR sugar, and getting the support of the unions – to get their point across. “It was the actions that put pressure on CSR … it was really sophisticated,” she said. “The committee was cross-political – there
were Libs, there were Labor, there were Greens, there were neutrals – and we all put our weapons down and worked together as constructively as we could. “It was a highly-charged emotional time [when CSR backed down].”

Home buyers claim exemptions By Alesha Capone More than 750 first-home buyers in Wyndham have claimed a stamp duty exemption or concession within a three-month period. Figures released by the state government show that 320 first home-buyers within the 3029 postcode (Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina) were granted a stamp duty exemption or concession between July and September this year. In the 3030 area (Point Cook, Werribee, Werribee South, Quandong and Derrimut) 208
buyers were given an exemption or concession. As well, 159 buyers in the 3024 postcode (Wyndham Vale, Manor Lakes, Mount Cottrell, Fieldstone and Mambourin) were granted an exemption or concession. The 3064 postcode, which takes in Craigieburn and Roxburgh Park, topped the state with 340 stamp duty exemptions and concessions. In July last year, the state government abolished stamp duty for first-home buyers purchasing properties under $600,000. The government also introduced stamp duty
concessions for first-home buyers purchasing homes costing between $601,000 and $750,000. Director of YPA Wyndham City, Bassam Tofaili said there were many reasons why first-home buyers were attracted to the municipality. “The market in Wyndham is going well, there are great schools both public and private, the Pacific Werribee Shopping Centre and great little shopping centres popping up everywhere,” he said. Mr Tofaili said that while the Melbourne housing marketing was slowing down,
properties selling for between $350,000 and $600,000 were “still very popular” especially among first-home buyers and some investors. He said that many vendors were now opting for private sales, as opposed to auctions, due to the fact that the market was not quite as competitive as it was about 12 months ago. Mr Tofaili said this was because property markets tended to slow down before elections (the station election will be on November 24) and that banks were also becoming stricter about loans as a result of the Royal Commission into the industry.

The centre hosted a fundraising Farmer Dress-Up Week, with Coles promising to match any donations collected. Nina Guevarra from Explorers Point Cook said the day was the result of kinder room discussions about the drought Australian farmers were experiencing. Mayoral Column Overflowing carparks understandably annoy locals commuting by train. Labor’s promise of 1,600 new carparking spots for Melbourne’s west will help – but there’s much more to do. One of the underlying causes of overflowing carparks is that locals need to commute long distances to work. As our community continues to grow, we’re missing opportunities to develop local activity centres where businesses thrive and people work within a short walk or cycle from their homes. This is why we want to work with the Victorian Government to plan and create suburbs that reduce car reliance. There will always be those of us who need to commute by train. Part of the reason many of us drive to stations is that there aren’t any convenient alternatives. Regular bus services that are wellconnected to train stations would reduce car reliance and road congestion. Why fight for a park if you can scan your Myki and get whisked to the platform for no extra cost? The promise of new carspaces is welcome, and we’re asking the Victorian Government to sit down with us after the election to tackle the underlying cause of overflowing carparks. Memorial now a museum By Charlene Macaulay A 30-year dream to turn the B24 Liberator Memorial into an accredited museum has finally been realised. The memorial, which is located at the Werribee Satellite Aerodrome, has officially gained accreditation by Museums Australia (Victoria), making it one of 76 Victorian museums. The B24 Liberator Memorial was established in 1988 by a group of ex-RAAF personnel who wanted to create a memorial to honour air and ground crews involved in B24 operations in Australia during WWII. Secretary Judy Gilbert said volunteers had spent the past three decades sourcing parts and painstakingly restoring an Australian B24 Liberator long-range heavy bomber. It is the world’s only surviving B-24MR model. The museum also includes a treasure trove of photos, books and personal memorabilia dated from the late 1930s through to 1947 that provides an insight into what pilots and crews experienced during war. Ms Gilbert said the team was currently working on the interior hydraulics and electrics, but would need a bigger hanger to complete the restoration due to the plane’s wingspan. She said the team was thrilled by the accreditation, which had been a goal since the memorial’s inception. About 3000 visitors come through the doors each year. Wyndham council tourism and major events portfolio holder John Gibbons congratulated the group on its achievement. “The founders of the B24 Liberator Memorial had always envisioned that it would be formally recognised as a museum, so it is my pleasure to congratulate all of the volunteers behind this project on achieving this goal,” Mr Gibbons said.

The Little Buddies Toy Library has opened a second branch in Wyndham, much to the delight of children and families who belong to the organisation. The not-for-profit toy library has been based in Werribee for more than two decades and opened a new hub at the redeveloped Point Cook Community Centre. Earlier this month, Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard and Altona MP Jill Hennessy celebrated the conclusion of $5.2 million in works to upgrade the community centre. Cr Maynard said the revamped community centre offers a larger range of council services. Toy library committee president Kirsten
Marran said the organisation recently experienced a large increase in its membership numbers, which led to a shortage of toys. Luckily, not long afterwards, the library received a grant from the Habitat Community Grants Program, an initiative of the Satterley Property Group. “The grant from Habitat came in the nick of time because we’re coming into summer and we wanted to purchase a whole range of exciting outdoor-based toys,” Ms Marran said. A developer’s plan to clear two Williams Landing conservation reserves and use the land for residential and commercial activities goes against Wyndham council policy. That’s the word from council chief executive Kelly Grigsby, who said the council was keen to apply Environmental Significance Overlays on the sites. Galway Holdings, a subsidiary of Cedar Woods Properties, has submitted a proposal to the Department of Environment and Energy (DEE) seeking permission to “clear and develop” two of three conservation reserves next to the Princes Freeway, which are on the former RAAF Williams Laverton Airfield. MY WYNDHAM At 15 years of age, Nathan Smith is pitching a promising innings in baseball. The Wyndham Vale resident has competed in 10 state baseball championships in the past five years and last month received a Mayoral Youth Award for his contributions to sport. As told to Charlene Macaulay.
Nathan: I’ve been here my whole life. Mum Christine: I came here when I was married and Nathan’s dad, Andrew, has lived here all his life. He was born at the old Werribee Hospital. You’re in year 10 at Wyndham Central College. What are you hoping to do after high school? Nathan: I’m doing VCAL, so hopefully I’ll become an electrician. It just seems like a cool, good job. How did you get involved in baseball? Nathan: Dad used to play baseball and softball, so when I was younger I just wanted to do a sport and he said, “Go down and try baseball”. So I tried it and I liked it. I was with Werribee [Giants Baseball Club], now I’m with Newport. This is my first season with Newport. I wanted to play under-16 state league instead of playing metro – it’s just better competition. I like pitching and I’m pretty good at it. You’ve competed in 10 state championships in the past five years. What’s it like competing at state level? Nathan: It’s pretty good. It’s better than competing at club level. You get to meet all different people and coaches.
You were one of 60 baseballers selected from an Australia-wide try out to attend a Major League Baseball invitational, where you received coaching from some of the industry’s best Australian and international coaches. What was that like? Nathan: I went to Lismore in New South Wales for a week and there were Baseball Australia coaches. We had a game every day for five days and training for the rest of the day. It was pretty good to meet kids from out of the state and all of that … more competition, better competition, better players, better coaches. What’s the ultimate baseball-wise?

Nathan: Just to go as far as I can. Christine: Nathan just made the under-16 Victorian team. Has there been a match that stands out in your mind? Nathan: I played a game in winter that was pretty good – I pitched five no-hit innings. If you could change anything about this area, what would it be? Nathan: More sports stuff, probably more baseball – but that’s just me! In Wyndham, there’s only one baseball club, so you have to go to Essendon and Geelong and all around Victoria to get good competition.

Today’s official opening of the West Gate Bridge by the Premier, Mr. Hamer, marks the dawn of a new era for the people of the Western Suburbs of Melbourne. The bridge brings to an end the great stumbling block of negotiating the city for those people of the southern and eastern suburbs when wending their way west.
More than 150 farmers in Werribee and surrounding municipalities are lobbying the State Government to declare the district a drought area after receiving only about half of the annual rainfall they need to survive. One Balliang farmer, Stuart Wilson, fears that if they do not get another four centimetres of rain by Christmas, the area could face a repeat of the 1982 drought when farmers were forced to shoot dying stock.
The Princes Freeway Action Committee (PFAC) and local councils have been snubbed by the Federal Government. PFAC has been excluded from plans for the newly-appointed Federal Minister of Transport, Mr Anderson, to inspect the notorious West Gate-Geelong stretch of the road.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds plenty to explore at Karlaylisi Don’t let the Ballarat Road address mislead – Karlaylisi is on Gordon Street. In fact, it occupies the exact same premises as the sadly short-lived Spice Klub and its Indonesian offerings. Karlaylisi delivers Uyghur cuisine – the food of the Uyghurs, who live mostly in China’s Xinjiang province. There’s oodles to like about Karlaylisi. Indeed, it could be tossed up as the perfect template for the perfect CTS eating house. The menu is long, stuffed with dumplings, hand-made noodles, soups, cold dishes and kebabs. And lots and lots of lamb dishes. Some items are certainly for larger and planned groups – the roasted whole lamb ($350, $180), for instance. Or even the lamb casserole with steamed wrap bread ($60). Yet despite the ambitious menu and that this appears to be a one-man show, we found our food to be fresh, hot and delivered to our table with admirable speed and wide smiles. An early highlight – actually, THE highlight – are the lamb skewers ($2 each, minimum of five). These feature bigger chunks of meat than we’ve had elsewhere. They’re more tender, too, and a little less seasoned with salt and cumin. There’s some fat, but it all tastes way more than good. Siyi qanalgan lagman ($14.50) is a homely

From the dumpling/pastry list come tugra ($13), lamb dumplings. Once again rather plain, they nevertheless go fine. Aqqik korulgan chop ($14.50) is a much sexier (ie. oilier and with some chilli heat) noodle dish with lamb, garlic chives and sesame oil. Kala til kormisi ($14) is stir-fried beef tongue. I expected this to have a more pronounced chargrill or wok hei aspect. Instead, the meat is quite silky and very tender. The overtly meaty vibe of our menu choices is ameliorated by the complementary salad presented to us. Laohusai ($13) is a delight, zingy and fresh with loud voices of garlic and vinegar coming through. We will return to Karlaylisi – there’s so much to explore! t is with immense gratitude that I recently accepted the principalship of Hoppers Crossing Secondary College. Having been the assistant principal here for the past 14 years, I have come to know and love the college community. I proudly lead a dynamic school of 1500 students who are presented with boundless opportunities throughout their schooling journey. I continue to place great emphasis on developing innovative and challenging educational programs and am totally committed to improving the life of each student. My goal is to see each student become a happy, self-confident, successful and knowledgeable lifelong learner who can demonstrate independence and a sense of career direction. Ultimately, I want to see each becoming a worthy, contributing member of Wyndham and the wider community. I am very proud of the improvements that have been made during my time at the College. Comparable cohort literacy and numeracy NAPLAN results indicate growth levels at or above state benchmarks for all secondary schools. The college learning environment has gained greater academic and collaborative focus and our year 12 VCE all study average score has significantly increased. I am pleased to see year 12 students consistently achieving study scores of 40+ and ATAR scores above 90, giving them a range of career pathways and tertiary education options. In performing arts, the students have been nationally praised for their skill and professionalism that rival those of dedicated performing arts colleges. A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL Thomas Carr College
T
homas Carr College, a Catholic co-educational year 7-12 school, is a welcoming, friendly community where each person is valued and spirituality nurtured. In the spirit of Archbishop Carr, young men and women are encouraged to strive for excellence according to their individual gifts. To encourage our students to make the most of their gifts and talents, they are able to engage in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. I’ve been principal since 2011, but am leaving to take up a principals consultant position at Catholic Education Ballarat. During my Thomas Carr tenure, I’ve aimed to build a community of educational excellence within a caring and pastoral environment for students. I’ve been committed to providing resources to help teaching staff. I believe the college’s strategic plan has been a real achievement. We can see a culture of continuous improvement in action, developing a strong and healthy Catholic identity. We have also done a great deal to enhance an attractive site, with areas for reflection and passive and active recreation. This will continue with the current master plan and associated new building projects. My successor will be Craig Holmes, current principal of Sacred Heart College in Kyneton. Mr Holmes has been deputy principal of Catholic Regional College in Sydenham and team leader and acting manager for student services at Catholic Education Melbourne, as well as having teaching experience at St Bernard’s College in Essendon and Salesian College in Sunbury. At year’s end, Mr Holmes will have completed eight years as principal of Sacred Heart College, leading diligently and with dedication. He is student-centred in his leadership and has been able to implement contemporary arrangements for learning and teaching,

ne of the goals of our team at Good News Lutheran is developing globally focused adults as our rapidly evolving College advances towards full International Baccalaureate accreditation. We began the Primary Years Programme (PYP) in March this year and that candidacy will probably last between two and three years. At some stage next year, perhaps around October when we have documentation prepared, we will say that we are ready to be accredited. The College will be required to continue working with a consultant over the next year before representatives from the International Baccalaureate visit in early 2020 for a thorough examination of the manner and extent of pedagogy that has been adopted. They’ll speak with members of the different communities within our College – teachers, students, parents and board members – to make sure that we have really embraced the principles and practices of the International Baccalaureate. The focus of the Primary Years Programme is to step away from the historical educational approach of having students learn and then regurgitate information. Rather, the focus of the program is for students to widen their learning experiences by encouraging them to inquire in their learning. The quest is to have students going deeper. It’s about having students explore the whys, hows and what-ifs; and then it’s about student agency. The focus of student agency is the aspiration to see student-driven action proceeding from their learning. The ultimate PYP student is one who gains knowledge, goes deeper in their learning and is sufficiently well-rounded that they take action. The programme, traversing all curriculum areas, features 10 International Baccalaureate learner profile attributes that form educational

The main aim is to make a house look as spacious as possible, Distinct Sydney interior designer Batya Basson says. “How you show off that space with the placing of your furniture is the single most important thing. “Use your existing furniture – or take some out, or rent new furniture – to make the rooms look as big and as open as possible. Then create a homey, cosy feel with accessories, like plants, flowers, artwork and cushions.” Another vital element in making a home alluring is to ensure it is sparkling clean with a pleasant scent. SPORT Baker moves into AFL coaching role Western Jets head coach Torin Baker has taken up a development coaching role with AFL club Hawthorn. Baker, who has coached the Jets for the past six seasons, including three finals appearances, will replace former Hawks’ ruckman Max Bailey on Alastair Clarkson’s coaching panel. Bailey is taking over as coach of VFL affiliate Box Hill. Baker has a long association with football, including a 17-year playing career in the VFL, country and local leagues. His appointment at Hawthorn will be a reunion of sorts – Clarkson was the head coach at Werribee in 2000 when Baker was a player. On the Hawks’ website, Baker said he believed his coaching and teaching background would lend itself to the role of fast-tracking the development of Hawthorn’s younger players. “This is probably the next step for me now in my coaching so I’m really excited to be able to get this position at Hawthorn,” Baker said. “I think a background in teaching lends itself
well to those transferable skills in coaching. I really value my teaching background and I’ve certainly used it a lot within my footy.” Baker had established a reputation in the TAC Cup ranks as a coach with strong interpersonal skills, and he said the chance to continue his own development while working on the national stage was an opportunity that excited him. “I invest heavily into relationships with my coaching,” he said. “I think coaching is a real communication game and that’s what I will aim to bring and something that my background suggests I will be able to do. “Everyone in the AFL industry just talks so positively about Hawthorn so that is really exciting for me and I feel really welcomed by the group already.” Baker won 41 games as coach of the Jets, after starting in the role in 2013. fans can turn their attention to the Werribee Cup coming up next month now the Spring Racing Carnival has ended. Werribee played a major role in the carnival and the facilities received rave reviews from the visiting trainers completing their preparations for the big race. There was no suggestion that the International Horse Centre had anything to do with the deaths of a couple of horses during the spring. The Werribee Cup is set down for Sunday, December 9, and while it does not command the attention it did in the past, it is still a big day on the local sporting calendar.

By Ewen McRae Werribee Football Club is continuing its busy off season, securing former Richmond star Nick Daffy for its coaching panel for the 2019 season. The former Tigers midfielder and forward spent 2018 working as the forward coach with Essendon’s VFL side and will take on the same role with Werribee next year. Daffy said the opportunity to work alongside AFL premiership coach Mark Williams at a stand-alone VFL club was exciting. “I felt it was going to be a good fit for me,” Daffy said. “I’m from Geelong, so it’s obviously close to home. “The opportunity to work with ‘Choco’ [Williams] on a full-time basis with a stand-alone side was something I thought I really needed.” The move continues an impressive coaching career for Daffy. Prior to joining Essendon, he spent 2014 as an assistant coach with the Northern Blues and 2017 as midfield and stoppage coach with
North Ballarat, also working closely with star Werribee midfielder Matt Hanson as midfield coach of the VFL state team that same year. Outside the VFL, he has served as director of coaching for Bellarine Football League side Torquay (2013-14) and senior coach of Geelong Football League club St Albans (2015-16). As a player, Daffy registered 166 games with Richmond and one game with Sydney. He kicked 182 goals from 1992 to 2002, during which he also represented South Australia in state of origin on three occasions. He began his career as a dangerous half-forward and was the Tigers’ leading goalkicker in 1995, later developing into a prolific midfielder and going on to win the club’s best and fairest in 1998. Werribee football operations manager Stuart Balloch said Daffy was an exciting addition to the club’s coaching ranks. “Nick’s football journey through the Geelong Football League with St Albans and then North Ballarat and in a VFL/AFL alignment with Essendon means he has a really good cross section of coaching experience,” Balloch said.
“He’s come in wanting to learn from Mark and we think he’s going to be terrific for our forward-line group.” Werribee has also been active on the player front, re-securing standout first-year players Joel Bennett and Keegan Gray. Part of a long line of graduates from the Geelong Falcons’ TAC Cup program to find their way to Avalon Airport Oval, Bennett debuted for Werribee against Collingwood in round five and went on to play 10 games in his maiden VFL season. His 16 goals placed him third in the 2018 club goalkicking and included six goals against Frankston in round 12. Gray joined Werribee by way of the Greater Western Victoria Rebels’ TAC Cup program and Hampden Football League side Portland, playing seven games and kicking two goals in his first season. The youngest member of the 2018 playing group, the 19-year-old produced a break-out performance in his second game, collecting 23 disposals in a losing effort to cement his spot on the wing and establish himself as a pivotal link-up figure in the middle of the ground.

Bowlers propel Cats to victory By Ewen McRae Hoppers Crossing has comfortably accounted for Elsternwick in south-west first XI sub-district cricket, adding spice to the coming weekend’s top-of-the table clash with Williamstown. The Hoppers Crossing win was set up by the bowlers, their handy display with the new ball at the weekend helping restrict Elsternwick to just 128 from its 45 overs. Brett Smith got the Cats off to the perfect start when he trapped Lachlan Baker in front for an 11-ball duck. He soon had Elsternwick captain Cameron Christiansen edging behind for eight to have the home side in trouble. Bryce Stuart (2-24) and Khush Talati (1-8 off nine overs) then teamed up to snare three quick wickets as the hosts’ innings fell apart. Hoppers Crossing was able to take wickets throughout the day. If not for a 58-run partnership for the ninth wicket between Gorman (31) and Callum Sinclair (27no), Elsternwick would likely have failed to reach triple figures. Smith returned late to knock over Gorman, finishing with 3-29. In reply, the Cats were in early trouble when Cameron Nicol (4) and Jack Rhodes (2) fell cheaply, but the partnership of Nick Keast and Trent Said got them back on track. Keast had his stumps disturbed for 18, and from there Said (39) and Luke Goegan (40no) took the Cats to the brink of victory.
Will Partington-Gardner hit a quick-fire 16 late to ice the game. Hoppers Crossing and Williamstown are now the only unbeaten sides in the south-west division. They will fight out a two-day clash from this weekend. Elsewhere, Werribee’s winning run came to an end as it struggled to contain Ormond’s middle order. Werribee started perfectly, with Tim Gage (2-39) knocking over both openers in the second over to have Ormond reeling at 2-2, but from there Ormond’s fightback began. Johann Wise made just 16, but the partnership of James Wild (68) and Gihan Perera (77) set the game up for the visitors as they put on 122 together. Ormond finished on 6-206 from its 45 overs. Werribee’s reply got off to a horror start when Andrew Ford (1), Shaun Dean (9) and captain Tim O’Brien (12) all fell cheaply. Matthew Dean and Chris Hennessy put on a 46-run stand, but when Hennessy (25) was dismissed, the innings unravelled further. Dean played a lone hand with 63, but the tail couldn’t mount much of a challenge, with Werribee dismissed for 157 in the penultimate over.

Werribee slid further down the division 1 pennant bowls ladder after another poor loss on Saturday. Travelling to take on Glenroy, Werribee was unable to win a single rink for the afternoon as the home side took the match 90 (18)-54 (0). Hoppers is knocking on the door of the top four after overpowering Williamstown, 95 (16)-70 (2).
Werribee continued on its winning way at the weekend, accounting for Springvale to move into second spot on the Victorian Summer Baseball League division 2 ladder. While the game was tight early, the Giants’ dominance grew the longer it went on. They finally walked away with a 13-4 win. Werribee coach John Curnow said it was good to see his side get on top after a tight start. “It was a bit of a pitch-off early,” Curnow said. “From the fourth innings on, I thought we really controlled it. “Everyone contributed pretty well on the hitting side … we hit the ball hard, which is a really good sign for us. We’re now seven weeks in and guys are really hitting their straps.” Josh Lee started on the mound for the Giants, putting in another strong showing and giving up just one run across his six innings. The Giants struggled at the plate in the first three innings, but came alive from the fourth

onwards as they ran in three, one, four and two runs in each of the next four innings. Guillermo Salazar pitched the final three innings for the Giants. He gave up three runs in the eighth, but closed out the match strongly. Wade Balzer enjoyed a strong day at the plate, getting three hits including two doubles to bring in runners and increase the Giants’ lead, while Salazar hit a home run. Curnow said that despite the perfect start to the season on paper, there was still plenty for his side to improve on. “We’re still throwing a few too many balls in our pitching,” he said. “We want to start throwing strikes early and getting out of innings a bit quicker. “We’ve got our first mid-week game this week, so we’ll use our pitching depth to try and keep guys fresh and performing to a high level.” Ewen McRae

Kia’s Rio gets a major revamp By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Kia Rio competes in one of the most hard-fought sales segments in Australia so it made sense to give a full-on revamp with major mechanical changes to give it more weapons to fight with. The entry level Rio S is unchanged, with a 1.4-litre petrol engine mated to either a six-speed manual or four-speed automatic. Much bigger news is that the Rio Si and SLi models have been replaced by a new Kia Rio Sport. It has 17-inch alloy wheels and, importantly, a six-speed automatic that replaces the four-speed. It has cruise control, leather trim on the steering wheel and gear lever, as well as powered folding door mirrors. At the top of the range, the Rio GT-Line has a sporty 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol with 88kW of power and 172Nm of torque. It now drives the front wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. GT-Line features a body kit and a full-on range of LED lights: daytime running lights, position lamps, foglights and rear lights. Infotainment uses a six-speaker sound system, Bluetooth as well as Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility. Safety is increasingly important to buyers in this class as many are youngsters and their parents are concerned about them. Standard features on all include ABS, ESC, VSM, reverse parking sensors, rearview camera and six airbags. The GT-Line adds AEB and Lane Keep Assist to the passive safety features. Kia’s 7-Year Warranty, 7-Year Capped Price Servicing and 7-Year Roadside Assist is a major plus for the Rio, indeed for all vehicles in the South Korean range. Pricing starts at $16,990 RRP for the manual and $17,490 drive away for the automatic.
