Wyndham will be free of boom-gate pain by 2025 under a Labor Party plan to scrap the third and final level crossing in the city. The state government has announced that it will remove the Hoppers Crossing level crossing if it is re-elected at the upcoming state election, adding another 25 level crossing removals to its current schedule of 50. The Werribee and Cherry street crossings have already been earmarked for removal by 2022. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the Old Geelong Road level crossing at Hoppers Crossing station had been identified for removal through a selection framework that prioritised level crossings that have high risks of incidents, cause excessive traffic congestion and impede access to important facilities. Mr Pallas said there had been three serious accidents at the level crossing since 2005 and 20 near-misses. About 18,000 vehicles travel through the level crossing each day. “What is clear is that this crossing meets this criteria, certainly in terms of safety, efficiency and community connectiveness,” he said. “From our perspective, one of the key issues here is the amount of time the boom gates are down – about 36 per cent of time during the morning peak.” A construction timeline for the level crossing removal is yet to be determined. Mr Pallas said it had been decided whether all three Wyndham crossings would be removed at the same time. He said that while the government’s preferred option to remove the level crossing was to add a road overpass over the rail line, it would consult the community before determining a design option. When asked why Hoppers Crossing didn’t make the original list of 50 removals, Mr Pallas said: “There was 180 of them in metropolitan Melbourne, and everybody has to get their fair share in this process”. Wyndham council has long campaigned for the government to add Hoppers Crossing to its level-crossing removals. On his mayoral Facebook account, Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard called the move a “game changer” for Hoppers Crossing. “The commitment will ease congestion issues that our community has dealt with for too many years,” Cr Maynard wrote.
The iconic gold jacket of extrovert Collingwood Football Club larrikin Joffa will be auctioned at a Hoppers Crossing fundraising event for Reclink Australia. Jeff “Joffa” Corfe has donated the jacket – which he will sign – to help raise money for Reclink’s Wyndham-based programs, which give disadvantaged people opportunities to participate in sport. Joffa will speak at the November 14 fundraising event, along with former Fremantle Dockers coach Chris Connolly. Joffa, a Footscray resident, said he became involved with Reclink after meeting its founder, Peter Cullen, about seven years ago. “The moment I met Peter, I couldn’t believe we had this organisation that helps the disabled, those with a mental illness, the homeless and, to some extent, the discarded people of society,” Joffa said. Every year since 2010, Joffa has purchased a new gold jacket which is destined for a good cause – this year was “Reclink’s turn”. “It’s not about me – the gold jacket today is all about people against the odds and people who have done it hard and against the circumstances,” he said. Mr Cullen described the gold jacket as “a unique piece of memorabilia”. “It means a lot from Reclink’s point of view, and for Reclink in Wyndham, for Joffa to generously donate his jacket for auction,” he said. Wyndham city brings its A-game By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham is one step closer to being the home of one of two new A-League soccer teams after a council-backed bid has made the shortlist. Football Federation Australia (FFA) last week announced that the Western Melbourne Group’s bid to set up a club in Tarneit as part of an expansion of the A-League was one of six remaining bids on the table. A decision is expected following the next meeting of the FFA board, which will be held after its annual general meeting in November.
Wyndham council has worked with the Western Melbourne Group on the bid, which also has the support of the Brimbank, Maribyrnong and Melton councils. If successful, a multi-million dollar 15,000-seat stadium – dubbed Wyndham Stadium – will be built on Wyndham-council owned land at 1160 Sayers Road, to host the new team. FFA chief executive David Gallop said an expansion of the A-League was an important step forward for the future of the sport. “We have six bids that have positive aspects

but require further work,” Mr Gallop said. “We need to continue our consultation with those bid teams to ensure that they adequately address these areas to ensure their future sustainability, which includes securing stadia, catchment area and financial capital.” Wyndham council mayor Peter Maynard

It reflects the strength of Western Melbourne Group’s bid and the benefits of basing an A-League team in one of Australia’s fastest growing regions,” Cr Maynard said. “The deal behind this stadium is unique in that WMG and WCC have entered into a public-private partnership that will see a purpose-built 15,000 seat stadium and associated sporting facilities delivered via a genuine value capture, rather than relying on state or federal government funding. “We believe this sets the submission apart.”

A group of pyjama-clad motorcyclists is not an everyday sight. But the idea of doing something “fun and different” for a good cause has inspired the Wyndham chapter of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club to hold a pyjama run to support a family violence response centre. The state government has made an election promise that is sure to get tails wagging across Melbourne, including in Wyndham. The ALP has promised to build up to 15 new off-leash dog parks across the metropolitan area if it is re-elected during November’s state election. Premier Daniel Andrews visited a dog park in Toorak to announce the $5 million commitment last week. Mr Daniels said his government would work to identify under-utilised parks or reserves within 13 Victorian municipalities, including Wyndham, Brimbank, Moonee Valley and Hume, which could be transformed into enclosed dog parks. Mr Daniels said one in three Victorians owned a dog, and with more people living in apartments or units without a backyard, the state needed more open spaces where dogs could socialise and exercise. “More dog parks mean more open spaces for families and their pets to enjoy, close to home,” he said. The Minister for the Environment Lily D’Ambrosio also welcomed the announcement. “Dogs aren’t just pets, they’re like family members, and only Labor will make sure people have somewhere they can enjoy getting outdoors,” she said. Wyndham has more than 15 dog off-lead areas in suburbs including Werribee, Wyndham Vale, Hoppers Crossing, Werribee South, Point Cook, Truganina and Laverton North.

he forthcoming state election is the gift that keeps on giving – or, at least, promises to give. The Sale of the Century gift shop never saw as much action, with the latest round of “But wait, there’s more� handouts involving schools, level crossing removals, kindergartens, jobs, public transport, dog parks, hospitals, a partridge and a pear tree. Well, almost. This badly disguised plan to buy votes while erasing the sins of the past is very transparent, but usually effective. Both the major parties are guilty here. It also has the potential to bury independent candidates who do not have political machines to fall back on. It is infuriating to see the frenzy of activity and the increased visibility of candidates leading up to polling day. The system does not make it easier, with formal nominations not opening until October 31 and the actual field of candidates being unknown until then. That date is probably fitting in a way, as that is Halloween and some of the candidates are pretty scary. And that is just the ones we know of. If any come knocking on my door, they will
not be greeted with a bag full of lollies, trust me. As voters, we must decide who we want to represent us, to do the best job in our backyard. But that has become more confusing. The meat and three veg elections I grew up on are gone, with a veritable smorgasbord of candidates now on offer with increasingly diverse reasons to stand. There are a couple of dozen registered parties for the state election and any number of independents will be running. There are many questions to answer before the big day. Is there a major difference between the major parties that will directly affect us? Will anything change if the Opposition is elected? Can an independent candidate make things happen or do you need party muscle to effect change? Is our area a rusted on Labor safe haven, so it doesn’t really matter who I vote for? There are numerous different answers to all those questions. I only hope whoever is elected is visible and contactable, if and when the you-know-what hits the fan – and that they serve the people and not themselves. â–

Funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria, the project will involve the council working with clubs to increase women’s participation and leadership and reduce gender stereotypes. Near miss
Police impounded a Mercedes driven by a Wyndham Vale woman after she allegedly drove on a footpath and nearly collided with a police vehicle in Melbourne on October 14. The 27-year-old woman returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.185 per cent. A search of her car revealed a number of weapons including knives, an axe and a baseball bat. Police expect the woman to be charged with drink driving, driving unlicensed and a number of other traffic and weapons offences.

Housing boom for Wyndham

Historic property sold A heritage-listed Werribee property has gone under the hammer. One of the popular Carter Cottages along College Road has changed owners after selling at auction earlier this month for $500,000. Nicole Occhibove from Ray White real estate said the property made up one of the four Carter Cottages owned by the Carter family, one of the first families to make Werribee
home. She said the property was used as a bed and breakfast until 2015 when the properties were sold off individually. “All those cottages in that pocket there – including Mary Avenue and Carter Avenue – they are heritage listed, because they’re the first settlers’ homes,” Ms Occhibove said. “All those homes there were built by the Carter family for their employees to live in, who worked at the farm.” The property formed part of the Carter
housing estate, a series of about 66 brick veneer properties built between 1941 and 1954 along College Road, Mary Avenue, Carter Crescent and Anderson Street in Werribee. Four of the properties later formed the popular Carter Cottages bed and breakfast. Ms Occhibove said the College Road property was sold to a young couple. “Being so close to the Werribee train station and Werribee CBD, homes in those areas get a lot of traction,” she said.

Wyndham has topped the state for the number of building permits issued for the 2017-18 financial year. There were 7231 building permits recorded within Wyndham for the financial year. The permits were valued at a total of more than $2.29 billion. In comparison, the value of permits issued within Wyndham during the previous 12 months totalled more than $1.78 billion. Twelve Victorian municipalities reported building permit activity valued at more than $1 billion during the 2017-18 financial year, including Melbourne, Geelong, Casey, Hume, Monash and Whittlesea. The VBA data showed that a record 114,803 permits, for building work valued at $38.4 billion, were reported across the state in the 2017-18 financial year. The previous highest number of building permits reported in a financial year was 113,669 reported in 2009-10, one per cent fewer than this year’s total. In August, Wyndham council released a report which said the population was expected to increase annually by an average of 3.4 per cent until 2036, and that 80,000 new dwellings would need to be built to cope with demand. The report also found the estimated housing capacity of Wyndham’s greenfield areas stands at 93,000 dwellings.

Wyndham Park’s rebirth begins By Charlene Macaulay A $13 million redevelopment of Wyndham Park that could transform Werribee’s CBD into the Southbank of the west will begin this week. The work will revitalise the under-used space between the Werribee Bicentennial Bridge, off Comben Drive, and the park’s entrance at Werribee Street. Included will be: • A major events lawn just past the Wedge Street bridge that could fit up to 5000 people
for markets, festivals, performances, informal ball games and other social sports. • A playground featuring a 12-metre play tower, giant slide, spinning equipment, double flying fox, adventure rope course and swings. • A children’s nature play space with a magical forest theme near the Werribee Bicentennial Bridge, designed to cater for children with autism. • Picnic facilities, including barbecues, tables, chairs and shade structures. • A nature trail and fitness loop.
• Lighting and toilets. The park will be closed to the public during construction and is expected to re-open in November, 2019. Star Weekly understands the council is in talks with Watton Street traders about providing shop frontages to Wyndham Park and the Werribee River to make the most of natural views and improve safety around the park. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said the redevelopment would transform the park into
a recreation and events space of significance for the west. The council’s family friendly city portfolio holder, Mia Shaw, added: “Our vision for this space is an exciting one. We’re opening up views of the parks so our residents and visitors can really make the most of this beautiful asset, improving connections between the park, river, Chirnside Park and the city centre”. The state government has chipped in $3.2 million towards the project, with the rest coming from Wyndham council.
Students show smarts A Wyndham challenge has helped create the next generation of women in tech. Wyndham Tech School got 52 year 7 to 11 female students to flex their creative muscles last week in the Smart Her Wyndham Challenge, a round robin challenge that encouraged students to use technology to solve problems. School director Brenda Fisk said the winners, a team from Tarneit P-9 College, had developed a prototype of a new park for kids aged 13 to 17. “These are the skill sets we need in industry,” Ms Fisk said. The tech school, based at Victoria University’s Werribee campus, opened in June and includes design studios and simulation and collaboration hubs with state-of-the-art technology – a virtual reality area, robots and 3D laser printers – to give secondary school students advanced education and training in science, technology, engineering and maths. Goh said her team had created a prototype of a school crossing that would benefit students, teachers and drivers. “We made an overhead bridge and had a little person standing on the bridge,” she said. “Two people from our group had gone to Spain as part of a school trip and they saw overhead bridges there … we decided to prototype that and we learned there was a thing called design thinking.” Priscilia, who wants to be an aerospace engineer, said having the ability to use hands-on technology would give her a competitive edge in the future. Developer eyes reserve land By Alesha Capone A property developer wants to clear two Williams Landing conservation reserves and use the land for residential and commercial activities. Galway Holdings, a subsidiary of Cedar Woods Properties, has submitted a proposal to the Department of Environment and Energy (DEE) seeking permission to “clear and develop” two of three conservation reserves adjacent to the Princes Freeway. The reserves – located on the former RAAF Williams Laverton Airfield – were established
by the Department of Defence to protect high-quality grassland remnants, wetland and rare and threatened species prior to the federal government selling the land in 1998. The land was sold on the condition that the reserves be protected and maintained. But Galway Holdings wants to clear and develop two of the reserves, one of 9.75 hectares and the other of 9.29 hectares. The company has sought permission in a proposal listed on the DEE’s website for public comment. In addition, Galway Holdings would need to obtain permission from Wyndham council to clear the reserves.
A report commissioned by Cedar Woods said that overturning the reserves would “directly impact several significant flora and fauna species”, including the loss of habitat for the endangered striped legless lizard and golden sun moth, plus the vulnerable tussock skink. Conservationist Liz Drury said she was “shocked” by the Galway Holdings proposal because the conservation reserves were set aside to compensate for “the huge biodiversity losses” from surrounding development. “If this site gets cleared, this natural landscape loses out twice and the community
loses its access to engage with the natural heritage of that area forever,” she said. Wyndham city economy, innovation and liveability acting director Peter McKinnon said the council was yet to develop a formal position on the Galway Holdings proposal. Cedar Woods state manager Lloyd Collins said: “The Department of Environment and Energy is assessing the application and Cedar Woods is confident that they’ll make an informed decision that is in the best long-term interest of the environment.” Details: epbcnotices.environment.gov.au/ publicnoticesreferrals
On target for greatness These young archery masters know how to hit the mark. Wyndham Vale’s Aimee Scattergood, Lachlan DiBattista, of Truganina, and Altona’s Amelie Lu have each amassed an impressive collection of records and awards for their shooting skills. Irene Norman, who runs Arrows Plus in Point Cook, said the trio were among 12 members of the club’s development squad. “All of these guys came through our kids’ club program originally,” she said. Aimee first gave archery a go at a friend’s birthday party and discovered a natural talent for the sport. The 12-year-old, who shoots with a bare bow, has three gold and one silver national medal to her name, as well as a number of state accolades. “My goal is to get a score of 400 on a Tuesday shoot,” she said.
For Lachlan, who specialises in outdoor archery and competes with a compound bow, he has his eye set on competing in the Olympics or World Championships one day. “I like going to a bunch of different clubs and shooting at different clubs, and I like the sport, it’s very fun for me,” the 13-year-old said. Recurve archer Amelie, 10, has been the state indoor champion for her division three years in a row and said she loves the sense of accomplishment when she performs well. “This year I am probably the most proud of the bronze I got nationally for the indoor championships.” Amelie was on television variety show Little Big Shots last year and hopes to contest the 2024 Olympic Games. Marathon pension wait
Slow going to CBD
By Alesha Capone A Hoppers Crossing man has been forced to wait more than six months to receive the age pension. Seventy-year-old John Smith, a former transport driver, retired on March 30 this year. Along with his wife, Vicki, he visited Centrelink on April 4 and applied for the pension soon after. Mrs Smith said she later received an email from Centrelink saying that the matter would possibly be finalised by June 1. Mrs Smith said that she and her husband “cut back” on a lot of expenses while waiting for the pension to come through, buying all their groceries on special and reducing their use of electricity. Mr Smith said that after June 1 passed, they received no communication from Centrelink. “Luckily, Vicki was working part-time and we had savings, but they dwindled to almost nothing,” he said. After six months, the couple visited the office of Lalor MP Joanne Ryan. Mrs Smith said the office contacted Centrelink on their behalf, which resulted in Mr Smith’s pension payments finally coming through after 27 weeks. “But we shouldn’t have to go through that,” Mrs Smith said. “The girls and people we spoke to at Werribee Centrelink were very helpful and very good at explaining how things went and were very apologetic. It’s more the process and how long it took for things to go through that makes us worried about how other people will have to wait.” Ms Ryan told Star Weekly that waiting 27 weeks to receive the age pension was “unacceptable”. She said the federal government had axed the jobs of 2500
Motorists driving between Hoppers Crossing and Melbourne’s CBD in the morning peak are travelling at an average of less than 54km/h, according to a new report. The Australian Automobile Association’s inaugural Road Congestion in Australia report, released last week, details analysis of speeds on arterial road networks in capital cities. According to the report, as of June 30 this year, drivers travelling from Hoppers Crossing to the CBD, via the Princes and West Gate freeways, were travelling at 53.1km/h in morning peak hours. Other options for getting from Hoppers Crossing to the city were not covered. Out of nine Melbourne routes assessed, drivers travelling from Ravenhall to the CBD recorded an average of 55km/h during the morning peak. Kew to Parkville drivers recorded the slowest average speed of 35.5km/h. Within Melbourne, the average speed in peak hours was 51.1km/h in the mornings and 52.2km/h in the afternoons. The Australian Automobile Association’s inaugural Road Congestion in Australia report used data collected from GPS probes that provide daily information on speed and speed distribution for road segments across Australia for its analysis. Armistice celebrated By Alesha Capone RAAF Base Point Cook will open its gates to the public for a special ceremony next month. The Air Force Association (AFA) will hold a public torchlight commemoration on Sunday, November 4, to mark 100 years since the signing of the World War I Armistice in France. The ceremony, which will also honour the memory of those who served and died in the war, will include a historical aircraft fly past, remembrance ceremony and music from the Werribee Concert Band. AFA national president Carl Schiller said that although the armistice was signed on November 11, the association had decided to hold the event on November 4. “The fourth of November is particularly important because 100 years ago on that day, the last Australian deaths on the Western Front were recorded – it’s quite an emotional day,” he said. Three men who died on that day were from the Number 4 Squadron AFC, which is the acronym for the Australian Flying Corps, the forerunner of the Royal Australian Air Force, which began at the Point Cook base. The armistice tribute will be held at an AFC memorial built in 1938 at the base. A memorial wreath, made by members of the 5000 Poppies organisation, will be laid at the memorial. AFA state president Max McGregor said thousands of people were expected to attend the armistice ceremony. The commemoration will be held on Sunday, November 4, from 7–8.30pm at the Point Cook RAAF base, Point Cook Road, Point Cook. Les takes to the road again This year will mark the ninth anniversary of the Wyndham 1000 event, in which Tarneit man Les Porter rides a tricycle hundreds of kilometres to raise funds for the Salvation Army. Mr Porter, a member of the Salvation Army Wyndham City, has raised more than $120,000 in the past nine years. This year’s Wyndham 1000, which was launched at Pacific Werribee on Saturday, will continue until November 17. Mr Porter said he would cycle 500 kilometres around Wyndham during his fundraising efforts, and that members from the Rotary Club of Wyndham – which sponsors his tricycle every year – would ride an additional 500 kilometres. MY WYNDHAM Amarachi Okorom is a Nigerian-born aspiring actress. The 21-year-old Truganina resident works across Wyndham’s libraries and is involved in Western Edge Youth Arts sessions. She sat down with Charlene Macaulay last week.
I’ve only been in Melbourne for five years. When we first got here, we lived in Tarneit, just down the road from this house. When we came here, I started school at Thomas Carr College. When we first came here, I didn’t really do very much, because I didn’t know how to branch out. Then I started with Western Edge last year and that was the starting point in getting connected with Wyndham. We put on a show and from there I met other people and got connections and that’s how I met Reece. He works at the council in youth services and now I’m part of the eYouth crew. I also work at the Wyndham City libraries. I’m a customer service officer, so I help people find books or any library needs. I’m trained to do the children’s program as well, so I’m going to run a Rhyme Time session with 50 toddlers which will be fun because I can use my acting in my job. You were born in Nigeria, grew up in New Zealand and then came to Australia. Why did the family move here? We just wanted the opportunity for better jobs. New Zealand’s great, but we weren’t really going far. We already had family who lived in Australia and they were saying how the life here is much better and it’s good for families and you can do well here. I didn’t want to at first, because I really loved my life in New Zealand and I’d made good friends and had a great drama teacher. It took a long time to let go, it took me like a year to properly let go. But
after staying here for a bit, I feel like I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone and if I’d stayed in New Zealand I would have stayed in that bubble. You’re an aspiring actress. When did you realise you wanted to be an actress? Ever since I was really young, I always liked being the centre of attention! Now not so much the centre of attention, but I love acting in the sense that I could just be goofy. Tell me about your involvement with Western Edge. I was doing a spoken word poem at my church for the Christmas production, and then Rahima, who works for the council, was in the audience and came up to me after the performance and said ‘that was really good, would you be interested in joining this?’ And I was like, yes! I just fell in love. It’s been the highlight of my life in Melbourne. Do you have a favourite Wyndham hangout? My favourite hangout place is Werribee Plaza, it’s much better now. Me and my friends always go to Grill’d. We’ve made this pact to go somewhere different, but we never do it! If there was something you could change about this area, what would it be?

Son of a soldier artist An inherited talent for drawing and painting and a close relationship with his father has sustained Peter Jones’ lifelong affinity for creating art. When Jones was two and his dad went off to fight in World War II, the pair would correspond with each other through drawings. “Every fortnight he would send from the Pacific a letter with lots of sketches in it,” Jones said. “ ‘This is the monkey that climbed up the tree’, ‘Henrietta the hen that lays me an egg every morning by my tent’ and ‘This is a portrait I did of my Captain Smith yesterday’. “I was encouraged to send back a letter with my pictures, so I did. “We shared the equivalent of probably 300 pictures, and I only have one letter left.”
Jones sold his first painting when he was 12 – parting with one of his pieces for a box of chocolates – and exhibited landscapes and portraits in a number of exhibitions and galleries. He moved from Williamstown to Little River a decade ago to be closer to the You Yangs, which inspires much of his work. This weekend, Jones will exhibit landscape paintings of the Grampians in the annual Little River Art Show. The show will run on October 27 and 28 at the Little River Mechanics Institute Hall, 8 Rothwell Road, Little River, from 10am-4pm on Saturday and 10am-2pm on Sunday. Entry is by gold coin donation.

With all the fresh spring blooms comes one of my favourite Wyndham City events - the State Rose and Garden Show. The free show at the Victoria State Rose Garden in Werribee South is on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 November. The garden features more than 5,000 roses on 5 hectares at one of Victoria’s recognised tourist gems near the Werribee Mansion. Come along to meet gardening experts like rose specialist Kim Syrus, The Gardenettes and plant and produce guru Vasili. There’ll also be pop up nursery stalls with plants, tools, pots and homewares on offer. A Wyndham Vale man is taking this year’s Movember challenge way beyond facial hair. As well as cultivating his finest moustache for the annual men’s health fundraiser, Bradley Brown will take on a 32-kilometre walk from Werribee to Flinders Street train station on November 18 in a bid to boost his fundraising attempt. Mr Brown has raised more than $50,000 for the annual fundraiser since 2012. “This year I wanted to do something different for people to support … something that other people haven’t done,” he said. “And hopefully along the way meet some people and talk to them about what I’m doing and spread some information about Movember. “Men globally, and especially in Australia, don’t seem to want to talk about their feelings, especially when it comes down to mental health and depression and things like that. “People need to know that there’s help out there and they need to know that they can pick up the phone and call a mate and have a chat.” Mr Brown said he had initially planned to do the walk solo, but has already heard from people inspired to join for some or all of the challenge. A team from Movember headquarters will join Mr Brown for the last part of the walk. Mr Brown is calling on others to sign up and take part in Movember this year. “It’s a really good talking point, especially for those who don’t normally have a moustache and all of a sudden they grow one,” he said. Werribee Racing Club will be conducting a Fashions on the Field event at the Werribee Cup carnival next Wednesday, November 1. Werribee business people have donated a large array of prizes for the winner, while the shire president, Cr Jim Bellin will present a sash and a sheath of flowers, plus a $50 cheque from the racing club.
The Werribee Council announced a $37 million budget for the 1988/89 fiscal year, last week, but it will not cover even 50 per cent of the projects council had aimed to carry out, according to Werribee’s town clerk Mr John Kerr. Mr Kerr said council needed $65 million to cover roads programs but council would only receive about half a million dollars from the Federal Government.
Wyndham is warming up for one of the city’s biggest events of the year – next Wednesday’s Werribee Cup. The cup has become an institution since the Werribee Racing Club formed in 1912.
The long-awaited Wyndham North police station has suffered another set-back with its planned opening date pushed back until 2010. There has been no construction work on the Sayers Road site, despite the State Government’s promise three years ago that it would be finished by June this year.

Keeping NDIS care in the west The Melbourne City Mission (MCM) Werribee hub officially opened in December 2017 to provide local services and support for children and adults with disability in Melbourne’s west.
T
he roll-out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Melbourne’s western suburbs began on October 1, 2018. Andrea McLeod, who is MCM general manager for Disability, Early Years, Palliative Care and Early Childhood Intervention Services (ECIS), says it is anticipated the NDIS will support 15,400 people in the west by 2020, including 4700 not yet in receipt of support services. “MCM is on the ground in Werribee and ready to support the community to make the most of the NDIS,” Ms McLeod says. “We know the NDIS well and have been delivering NDIS services since the beginning in the Barwon region. It is anticipated by 2020 the NDIS will deliver $750 million in support services to people in the west with disability or developmental delay. The MCM Werribee hub is home to professionals working across Disability and ECIS, as well as some staff from Homelessness and Justice services as part of the Wyndham H3 Alliance. West program manager Gavin Rieschieck says the NDIS represents a big change. “It’s an exciting opportunity for many people,” he says. “We’re here to make it as simple as possible to get started with the NDIS, connect to services and get on with living life. “Our support co-ordinators play a key role
in getting people up and running with their NDIS plans.” The MCM hub has ECIS, which supports children from birth to seven years old who have a developmental delay or disability, as well as their families, by providing specialist therapies such as speech and occupational, as well as physiotherapy, information and advice. ECIS manager Melinda Thompson understands that finding out your child has a disability or developmental delay can be overwhelming. “Our early childhood intervention specialists work alongside families every step of the way,” Melinda says. “We match every family with a key worker, who takes the time to get to know each child and their family, support them in developing a plan and linking to therapy, support services and resources.” Most of the staff at the MCM Werribee hub are locals from Wyndham and adjoining parts of western Melbourne. The workforce in disability services in Melbourne’s west is expected to grow significantly, from an estimated current workforce of 2400-2900 to 5000-6100 in the next two years. Werribee racing sets a hot pace Werribee Racing Club general manager Ashley Baker says a new era has started for the club, with a strong focus in the 2018-19 season on enhancing relationships with businesses and the community.

The cost is $99 or $79 for members. “The champagne breakfast will be the last chance to see the international horses as they prepare for the Melbourne Cup,” Ashley says. “It’s to be hosted by Shane Anderson and there’ll be an appearance by the jockey who rode the first international winner of the 1993 Melbourne Cup, Vintage Crop. oad policing adviser Sergeant Marty Wallace says Operation Furlong will be conducted throughout Victoria using all available personnel. He says the Melbourne Cup holiday weekend provides an opportunity for families to free themselves from their usual commitments, so it is anticipated that large numbers of people will use Victorian roads, often driving long distances in unfamiliar driving conditions. “Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that they take at least a 15-minute break at least every two hours and don’t drive if they are tired,” Sergeant Wallace says. The times of highest risk are when people are leaving for holiday destinations and returning home. Police will be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes which are: • Excessive speed • Driver distraction • Restraint non-compliance • Fatigue • Impaired driving (alcohol and/or drug) Speed cameras will be in use in known high-collision locations. Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members and the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to

loved ones. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings says the entire community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma. “It has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes,” he says. “Speeding affects both the risk of a
crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. “Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. “Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road – the onus is always on the
driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road. “Before embarking on any driving trips, drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights.” The community is being asked to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Recently on the Food Bytes podcast we covered a very controversial topic: Does anybody actually like the orange cream biscuits in the Arnott’s Assorted Creams pack? My experience – on opening up a pack at home or at work – is that people tend to leave the orange ones behind. A lively discussion ensued on the merits of the humble orange cream biscuit (apparently lots of people like them!), not to mention the Kingston, Monte Carlo, Shortbread Cream and Delta varieties. With biscuits still on my mind, I decided to do something equally controversial with my husband’s favourite biscuit, the humble Mint Slice … I turned it into a cheesecake. Well, a choc mint picnic pie, to be fair. Creamy, peppermint-spiked cheesecake on a layer of Mint Slice biscuits, on a layer of creamy chocolate ganache, on a layer of chocolate pastry. This is a fun – albeit a tad fiddly – dessert to put together but well worth the results. You can see the Mint Slice biscuits in every piece you cut. Just don’t get too heavy handed with the green food colouring or your choc mint picnic pie might end up looking slightly radioactive, as mine did (see photos!) SPORT Recruits bring balance to Wyndham Vale Wyndham Vale may have dropped its opening game of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association season, but its new coach is confident there’s a strong season ahead. David Buchanan is at the helm of the Charles Clark Shield division 4 side this season, and while the opening round loss and subsequent washout at the weekend was not ideal, he said he expected better results to come. “There’s a lot of potential there, so we’re pretty hopeful things will turn our way and we can start seeing the results,” Buchanan said. “We’ve got some good sides that we’ll come up against, and it obviously wasn’t the start we were looking for in round one, we were soundly beaten, but we know we can do better than that.” Wyndham Vale was soundly beaten by Caroline Springs in the opening game, bowled
out for just 88 chasing 4-169 in a one-dayer. The club has recruited experienced opening batsman Arosha Perera from the Eastern Cricket Association, as well as Lachie King, to help settle a batting order that struggled at times last year. It has also added Australian indoor cricket representative Lance Macdougall to the side. Buchanan hopes an improved effort with the bat will help steer the side in the right direction. “Arosha has played a lot of high quality cricket, so we’re hoping for more of that from him,” Buchanan said. “In previous years we’ve been more of a bowling side, so I’m hoping with these players we’ll have a better balance to our side this year. “We’ve also got quite a few young blokes in the seconds that we’re hoping to push up and have an impact this year, and we want to
reward the guys that did well last year as well.” While Buchanan is in his first year as coach of the club, he’s confident the club has what it takes to improve on its four wins last year to contest for finals. “I’m coming towards the end of my playing days so coaching was a good fit for me, and with the players that we’ve got, I’m hoping we can push for finals and go out on a high,” he said. “I’d be disappointed if we didn’t make finals, especially with those players that we’ve brought in. “It will be tough this week against Sydenham/ Hillside, who have a very strong line-up, but so long as we’re competitive against them I think the wins will start to come from there.” Ewen McRae
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ We are all drawn to sport for a variety of reasons. Through time the reasons we stay involved change, but the passion is as real for an eight-year-old as it is for an 80-year-old. That is why sporting clubs are so important to the fibre of our local communities and why they should be helped financially and allowed to get on with what they do best, not bogged down in a sea of bureaucracy. I am sure this has been one of the reasons many people shy away from getting involved. Fortunately clubs do have hearty souls such as Igor and Eleanor Vivoda, of the Altona Vikings, who were rewarded for their tireless efforts with life membership last weekend. You would be hard-pressed to find a more deserving duo anywhere in local sport. As is usual with this calibre of person, each has performed many roles with the club over the years. Well done to both and to Altona for recognising them. ■ Albion Football Club is, contrary to popular belief, alive and well and heading into the 2019 season with a new coach and a plan to be competitive in division one. The club addressed the rumours regarding a request to be relegated to division two in 2019, stating it is committed and ready for the challenges of 2019. Some players have moved on, which happens every year, at every club. The Cats’ new coach Steve Lowerson will deal with that, with help from the committee and support personnel. Jono O’Brien, Todd Finco and James Thompson have signed with Springbank, where my old mate Steve Thom is newly appointed director of coaching. Good to see long-time Albion man Stephen Gibbs recently awarded life membership. He might lay claim to a special place in the WRFL with life membership at West Footscray as well. Any other dual lifers that you know of, let me know.
Werribee wins AFL star By Ewen McRae Werribee Football Club has pulled off a recruiting coup – enticing favourite son and former AFL player Michael Barlow back to the club for the 2019 VFL season. The former Fremantle and Gold Coast midfielder will return as a playing assistant coach under new coach Mark Williams. Barlow’s 38 games for Werribee culminated in a stellar 2009 season in which he finished second in the J.J. Liston Trophy and won both the Fothergill-Round Medal as the VFL’s most promising young player and the Bruce Montgomery Trophy as Werribee’s best and fairest. That led to Fremantle drafting him in the 2010 rookie draft and playing 126 games in six years with the Dockers before playing a further 15 in his two years at the Gold Coast. 66 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 24, 2018
Barlow said he was excited to commit to Werribee early in the off season. “I’ve always had a really strong affiliation with the place through the opportunities it first gave me,” the 30-year-old said. “It all feels pretty familiar, though there’s obviously a really new exciting facility. “The ability to continue to play and get that fix while upskilling myself under Mark Williams in an assistant coaching capacity and working with some really driven players appealed to me pretty strongly.” His AFL career highlights include being named the AFL Players’ Association’s best first-year player in 2010 and winning the Ross Glendinning Medal as best afield in the Western Derby in 2010 and 2013. He was one of Fremantle’s best in its narrow 2013 grand final loss to Hawthorn. Barlow showed great tenacity throughout his time in the AFL,
bouncing back from a serious leg break in his first year at the Dockers and another in his first year at the Suns. Werribee football operations manager Stuart Balloch said Barlow was a massive signing for the club. “To say the club is thrilled would be an understatement – it’s a great coup,” Balloch said. “We have followed Mick’s journey since getting drafted, and to see him come back and continue to develop in our program as a coach is testament to the direction that our program is headed and also demonstrates his passion for our club. “He is a hugely respected and popular person within the industry, so I have no doubt he will be welcomed by all and that he still has much to offer on the field, given his 2018 AFL and NEAFL form.”

■ Not a very exciting weekend for local cricket but Caulfield Cup day is often one that attracts its share of washouts, as it has for many, many years. Gellibrand Cricket Club, in the Williamstown one-day competition, got off to a slow start in round one, losing to Werribee Centrals. Deer Park stalwarts Balshaw and Setterfield have kept the scorers busy with bat and ball. Spotswood welcomed Dan Christian to its T20 side earlier this week when it clashed with Laverton. Hoppers takes control for first victory Hoppers is on the board for the 2018-19 pennant bowls season, claiming its first win at the weekend. Taking on Melton in division 2, Hoppers looked in control right from the start, going on to drop just one rink, by a single shot, in a welcome return to form. The final margin of 98 (16)-64 (2) illustrated the gap between the two sides, with two rinks helping to give Hoppers a welcome points boost. While Bill Russell’s rink had to fight all day to come away with a 23-18 win, Colin Ravenscroft had a commanding 28-12 win with his rink and Keith Vanderpoel was equally impressive in his 27-13 victory. Robert Waugh fell to a tight 21-20 loss in his rink, but overall Hoppers was able to stretch its lead at every break, leading by 15 shots after 20 ends and 25 shots after 40 ends. The win lifts Hoppers to sixth on the table ahead of this week’s clash with Maribyrnong Park. In division 1, Werribee had a disappointing trip to Lalor, falling to its second loss of the

season. In damp conditions, Werribee trailed for much of the day, but was able to get wins in half the rinks. It remained a slim chance of closing the margin late before eventually going down (86 (14)-68 (4). Werribee trailed by nine shots with three ends to play, before a bad mistake from the visitors saw them drop six shots and with it the match. Rob Smith continued on his winning way with a one-shot win, while Rob Patton’s rink had a massive comeback. After trailing by 11 shots at the break, it came out to blitz its Lalor opposition rink 20-1 in the second half of the day to win by 10 shots. The loss sees Werribee slip to fifth place ahead of this week’s match with top-of-the-table Moonee Valley.
The National Premier League Victoria will introduce a new competition structure for the 2020 season. The current two tier NPL system will be changed to a three tier system followed by the state leagues. From 2020, the top NPL grade will contain 14 sides, followed by two, 12-team grades. The second tier will be made up of the top six clubs from the previous year’s NPL2 east and west divisions, while the third tier competition will contain the bottom four from the current NPL2 east and west division, plus the top two from both state 1 east and west divisions. The changes follow a Football Federation Victoria review into the structure of all competitions across the state.

Werribee’s First XI match against Taylors Lakes was washed out on Saturday and will now be played as a one-dayer this week, but its Second XI match got on the park as one of just two games in Sub District 2nd XI to be played as a two-dayer this round. Werribee won the toss and batted, getting off to a strong start before the wheels started to fall off. Alexander Alabakis (66) and Ben Hurn (24) put on an opening stand of 59, but when Hurn was dismissed it sparked a collapse and the Tigers’ middle and lower order floundered. They ended the day on 9-166 and will need to fight hard this week to avoid defeat. Sub District third and fourth XI games were also cancelled at the weekend.

Tarneit Central had a tough day against Buckley Park in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association’s George Luscombe Shield, going down by six wickets in a one-dayer. After being asked to bat first, Tarneit lost wickets at regular intervals throughout its innings before eventually being dismissed for 136 in 37 overs. In reply, Buckley Park had a 76 from Ankit Bhoi to thank for guiding it to the total in just 29 overs. The loss leaves Centrals winless from the opening two rounds, with a trip to face reigning premiers Kealba Green Gully this weekend.

Giants step forward By Ewen McRae Werribee continued its perfect start to the division two summer baseball season at the weekend, overpowering Bonbeach St Chads to claim a mercy rule win. With the two sides at opposite ends of the ladder, the Giants went in as heavy favourites, and after scoring early and holding firm in the field they walked away with a 12-2 win. Giants coach John Curnow said it was good to keep the wins rolling in early in the season. “Yeah the boys did really well to get the win, and a much improved pitching performance after last week,” Curnow said. “We struggled to throw strikes early last week which cost us a few runs, but we were on song from the start this week which meant we could close out the game early, which is always good. “Early season wins are important, and we’ve set ourselves up as well as we can at this point.”
Josh Lee started on the mound for Werribee and was a standout performer across the day, throwing plenty of early strikes and closing out innings quickly. The Giants scored a run in the first inning, and four in the second to open up a handy lead. While Bonbeach scored twice in the second, it never looked likely to threaten the result. Werribee was 8-2 up after the fourth, and with two runs in each of the sixth and seventh was able to enforce the mercy rule and finish the game. Lee pitched the first six innings to set up the win, with Wes Dejong closing out the day on the mound. “Josh [Lee] pitched really well and was definitely the standout, but we hit really well throughout, got a lot of base runners out there and worked the counts really well,” Curnow said. “We were swinging at much better pitches than we had been the past two weeks, and we
also got more out of our pitchers when they batted, which really helps. “Everyone did their part in the field as well, especially our outfielders, Wes Dejong and Ryan Balzer had really good days.” Curnow said it was pleasing to see some improved depth at the club this year as it again pushes for finals. “We’ve got a lot of blokes who are pushing for spots in the ones, so the pressure is on for spots … if anyone drops off there’s guys ready to step up,” he said. “We’ve got a couple of guys back this year who we’ve missed the last year or so. We’ve been able to get Wes Dejong back from college in the US, which is a big boost for the pitching and also he’s hitting really well early on. “We’ve definitely got to make finals, we’ve had a good start and if we can build on that we’ll be looking pretty good. Anything other than finals will be a let-down to be honest.”
