Nature strip fine pain By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has issued more than $1 million in fines to vehicles parked on nature strips in a two-year period. City operations director Stephen Thorpe said that between September 27, 2017 and September 27 this year, the council issued 8100 infringement notices to people parked on nature strips across residential, industrial and commercial areas in Wyndham. The fines amounted to $772,756 in total. Mr Thorpe said that from September 27, 2016, to September 27, 2017, the council issued 3643 infringements notices totalling $341,631 to people parked on nature strips.

Tally-ho for riding school There will be many tears shed when the Taleeho Riding School in Wyndham Vale closes. The popular riding school will shut down at the weekend after a developer bought the land where it is based. Sue Cradock and her daughter established the school nine years ago, renting fields and an old farmhouse located near Ballan Road. Mrs Cradock said she had decided to shut up shop for good because of the development occurring in Wyndham. She said that even if she opened up elsewhere, the land would most likely end up being sold for development. “There is no land for me, so I had to sell all the horses off,” she said. “I’m glad they’ve all got good new homes. It’s going to be sad to say goodbye.” Mrs Cradock said she loved watching children learn to ride and develop their equestrian talents. She said many of the young students based at the school had been “shattered” by the news of its closure, and that some would have to travel to Melton or Lara to continue their riding lessons. Several horse owners who agist their mounts at the property are also looking for new homes for their animals, including one girl who owns eight horses. Mrs Cradock said she wanted to thank the “good people” who had helped her at the riding school during the past nine years. Taleeho will host a clearance sale on Saturday, October 27, to sell its equipment. See facebook.com/Horses for details.
Cars … can create safety issues if motorists can’t see past them
’’
- Stephen Thorpe “Tarneit, Hoppers Crossing and Truganina were the suburbs where the majority of infringements were issued,” Mr Thorpe said. Within Victoria, parking on a nature strip – or partially on a nature strip – is not permitted under municipal local laws unless there are signs giving permission to do so. If residents wish to construct a parking bay on their nature strip, they must apply to their council for a permit. “There are a number of reasons as to why people should not park on nature strips, whether it be in residential, commercial or industrial areas,” Mr Thorpe said. “Cars parked near intersections or driveways can create safety issues if motorists can’t see past them. “Vehicles can also damage underground services – such as water, gas, electrical and stormwater services – as well as the casing in which these services are contained. “They also destroy grass and vegetation, cause ruts and carry mud and debris on to roads.” Mr Thorpe said the fines were revenue for the council. “Where fines are unpaid, they are referred to the state government through Fines Victoria, or are referred to court,” he said.

Opposition pledges fast rail link By Charlene Macaulay The state opposition has vowed to build a European-style high speed rail link between Geelong and Melbourne in the next four years if the Coalition wins government. The Geelong Metro project will re-establish a direct train service between Geelong and Werribee, with a service from Werribee to Waurn Ponds via Geelong. Many Wyndham commuters have been
crying out for a reinstated Werribee-Geelong service since Geelong trains were diverted to Regional Rail Link tracks in June 2015 and a direct metropolitan train service between Geelong and Werribee was axed. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said reaching speeds of 200km/h, the high speed rail line would almost halve travel times between Geelong and Melbourne to 32 minutes. David Davis from the opposition said if elected, the Coalition would complete the
project in its first term of government. “The added rail capacity under our regional plan will help people in Melbourne’s west access our public transport by decongesting the current network,” he said. “Reducing congestion in the western suburbs, which are growing incredibly fast, is critically important which is why we have a plan to decentralise our population.” The project, which is expected to cost between $15-$19 million, will need funding
from the state and federal governments and the private sector to be completed. Wyndham council city economy director Peter McKinnon said the council lended in-principle support to any policy to improve rail capacity. “A rail network like the one proposed by the state opposition has the potential to improve the efficiency of the metropolitan rail network, which will have a positive benefit on growing municipalities like ours,” Mr McKinnon said.

Deadly dog virus is easily collared Dog owners are being urged to vaccinate their pooches against the highly contagious parvovirus, which can be deadly. The virus attacks cells, particularly the lining of the gastrointestinal tract and bone marrow. This can be fatal for dogs and puppies that are unvaccinated or have incomplete vaccinations.
Australian Veterinary Association president Paula Parker said many pets’ lives were unnecessarily put at risk. “Canine parvo is a disease that we have excellent vaccines for,” Dr Parker said. “This is not a disease that we need to see any more.”
Dogs that are showing signs of lethargy, vomiting or diarrhoea should be taken to a vet immediately, Dr Parker said. “Early treatment is essential in improving the chance of survival,” she said. Sumeyya Ilanbey

A candidate in the 2016 Wyndham council election has been charged with making and using false documents during the election campaign. The Local Government Inspectorate will allege that, on September 21, 2016, Tarneit resident Joh Bauch submitted a candidate statement lodgement form and candidate questionnaire lodgement form in the name of another candidate to the Victorian Electoral Commission without their knowledge or consent. He is expected to front the Werribee Magistrates Court on November 16 and faces two charges of making a false document and two charges of using a false document contrary to sections 83A(1) and 83A(2) of the Crimes Act 1958. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail. The charges follow a Local Government Inspectorate’s report into the Wyndham council elections that found two of the candidates interviewed were unaware they had nominated for council. Mr Bauch was contacted for comment. He is the fourth Wyndham candidate to be charged over his involvement in the 2016 election. In March, fellow candidate Helen Simeonidis (also known as Helen Fanakopoulou and Eleni Fanakopoulou) was convicted and fined $1500, plus court costs, for failing to submit a campaign donation return following the election. Wanli (Lucy) Jiang and Sahra Ashkir were both put on a 12-month good behaviour bond, with no court costs or conviction, for the same charge.

Kevin Hillier says it’s time to take a hard look at the future
W
hat does the City of Wyndham want to be when it grows up? Like almost everything about this city, that question has been left until almost too late to answer and act upon. While driving through Geelong last weekend, it struck me that one of the most appealing aspects of Geelong is that it is not Melbourne. It has tried for many years to be the second city of the state and only recently seems to have given up that quest and embarked on a “Gee-change, pointing out all the things Geelong has that you won’t find in a major city. Maybe we should do the same. What do we want Wyndham to be? We already surpass Geelong in population – so what? We have been banging on about our growth but never really planned for it. Wyndham continues to be like the family who is ready for the arrival of a baby and everything is fine, until it is discovered it is triplets. We have been like that for 30 years.
It seems inevitable that Wyndham will be a quasi city in the ‘burbs with all the downsides of city life (traffic, crowded public transport and its parking nightmare, not enough schools, inadequate health facilities, etc). The council catchphrase of “city, coast, countryâ€? does nothing to define who we are, or where we are headed. The country is almost evaporated, coast a work in progress, and city an unmade road or 20. The East Werribee precinct probably holds the key to the future as far as employment, business growth and important infrastructure is concerned. Avalon Airport’s appeal and growth as an international terminal and destination will also have a very big bearing on Wyndham’s future. Our council will have to present itself in a much more professional manner. The age demographic of the city will change dramatically once there is sustained local employment and older residents such as myself will be contemplating a “Me changeâ€?. â–

Grants program panel rejected By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham councillors have voted down controversial reforms to the council’s annual community grants program. Councillors last week considered terms of reference for an evaluation panel of six councillors – including at least one councillor from each ward – to consider and vote on all eligible applications submitted through the community grants program. Cr Josh Gilligan, who pushed for the panel, said the idea was to give councillors
more engagement in the annual $1.6 million community grants process while “maintaining robust safeguards” . But several councillors raised concerns about the terms of reference and the motion was defeated, with councillors John Gibbons, Kim McAliney, Henry Barlow, Mia Shaw and Tony Hooper voting against the panel and councillors Gilligan, Intaj Khan and Aaron An in favour. Cr Barlow said he was uncomfortable with the idea that councillors would both make and vote on grant recommendations under the
panel without any review by council officers at the end of the process. “I’m a big fan of councillors staying at arm’s length when it comes to dishing out money to community groups because there has been a number of councils … where councillors are actually directing funding to self-interest groups,” he said. “I’m not suggesting anybody on this council would do that, but … it is a concern.” Cr Hooper said he believed the panel would expose “council to perceived conflicts of interest”.
The council will maintain the status quo for its community grants process, with half of all available council grants determined by council officers and the rest voted on at council meetings with decisions based on council officer recommendations. Cr Gilligan expressed his disappointment after last week’s vote. “This now means community groups will be worse off when it comes to councillor awareness and involvement in local events and activities funded by council’s community grants program,” he said.
Wyndham plans picked Several Wyndham projects will receive funding through the Pick My Project initiative, including a park in Point Cook’s town centre and a roadside rubbish detection system. Pick My Project is a state government initiative, offering $30 million in funding for community projects. Last week, 10 projects based in Wyndham were announced as winners, including the Point Cook Town Centre Community Park, which will receive $200,000. The Point Cook Action Group (PCAG) submitted the idea of an open space for markets, festivals and community events after running a pop-up park this year. Ai3DSENSORY will receive $190,000 to develop a roadside detection system using vehicle-borne sensors to detect items such as rubbish, fallen trees and pot holes, to be passed on to councils through a web browser. Successful Wyndham projects were:
• The Point Cook Football Club will receive $145,000 to install a multimedia scoreboard. • The Williams Landing Estate Resident’s Association will get $153,000 to stage the Trail of Lights, a lantern festival. • Alamanda College and Wyndham Harbour Sailing program will receive $133,000. • DYC Australia will receive $85,000 for music therapy sessions. • Wyndham council will receive $35,000 to upgrade the Saltwater dog park in Point Cook. • Cambridge Primary School will receive $35,000 for a sensory and sustainable garden. • An on-demand public transport bus pilot, submitted by WynBus and PCAG, will receive $31,500. • An undercover all-weather seating and exercise facility will be installed at the Western Athletics track for $31,148. West a hit with buyers By Alesha Capone Houses in Williams Landing, Seabrook, Point Cook and Altona are becoming increasingly popular with buyers, according to new figures released by the Real Estate Institute of Victoria. Williams Landing houses have gone from an average of 105 days on the market compared to 64 days in the previous 12 months, while houses in Seabrook have gone from an average of 84 days on the market down to 49, as revealed by REIV data.

Point Cook houses went from an average of 71 days on the market to 52 and Altona houses went from an average of 48 days on the market to 32. REIV president Richard Simpson said there was a “clear trend” showing that properties within the four suburbs were in demand. “Melbourne’s south-west is becoming increasingly popular with buyers, especially young families,” he said. He attributed the attraction to access to public transport, proximity to the CBD, plenty of green open space, shopping centres and community facilities. “Properties in Williams Landing sold 41 days faster this August compared with 2017, while those in neighbouring Seabrook were on the market for 35 fewer days.
Houses in Melbourne’s south-west are spending less time on the market. (Shutterstock)
“Point Cook listings sold 19 days quicker and the days on market for Altona narrowed by 16 days.” Mr Simpson said the median house price in Point Cook increased 13.4 per cent across the 12 months to June 30 this year to $706,000, while the median price for Williams
Landing houses increased by 10.6 per cent to $685,000. He said the areas of Melbourne in which houses remained on the market for the smallest amount of time included Millgrove (10 days), Upwey (14), Woori Yallock (14), Yarra Junction (15) and Launching Place (15).

Push is on for new footy club There is exciting news in store for Truganina children who would like their own football club. A meeting will be held this week to discuss the creation of a Truganina Junior Football Club. The potential future club would be based at Mainview Boulevard Reserve and link with the existing Truganina Auskick program. Volunteers would be supported to establish the club and guided through the requirements of developing it, to ultimately enter a team in local competitions. In a post on its official Facebook page, Truganina Auskick said it hoped to see the club “flourish and grow organically over the next few years and this is only possible with the help of our community members”. “Everyone is invited to attend the consultation and join in on founding the club for our community. “If you are a little unsure of what it is all about come along on the night, have a listen to what is said, show your support for Auskick members … and ask any questions that you may have.” Truganina Auskick, AFL Victoria and Wyndham council are seeking players, parents, families and friends to attend the meeting, on Thursday, October 11 at 6.30pm at Mainview Boulevard Pavilion, Mainview Boulevard, Truganina. New roadworks tracking well By Charlene Macaulay Roadworks have begun on one of Wyndham’s busiest arterials, while a contract to upgrade a second major road has also been given the green light. The long-awaited duplication of Forsyth Road has begun, and will double the arterial from two lanes to four between Ashcroft Avenue and Sayers Road. The $7.54 million project, which will also include a new traffic light intersection at Waterways Boulevard and a pedestrian
crossing at the Federation Trail crossing, is expected to take 10 months to complete. Once the work is finished, Forsyth Road will be fully duplicated between Old Geelong Road and Leakes Road. Wyndham councillor Walter Villagonzalo said: “This road is an important link to the freeway interchange on one side, and works as a connection to arterial roads, like Leakes and Sayers, on the other end”. Meanwhile, Wyndham council has awarded a $3.99 million contract to upgrade Boundary Road, between Derrimut Road and the Regional

Rail Link access track, to Downer EDI. The project includes rebuilding the existing unsealed two-lane road with asphalt pavement to improve safety, upgrading property access driveways to match the new road and upgrading the intersection at Woods Road. “The amount of traffic using this section of
Boundary Road is expected to increase because of the loss of capacity on other roads due to the high level of road construction during the next three years as part of the Western Roads Upgrade project,” a council report stated. Works are expected to begin shortly and are slated for completion by February 2019. In accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding between Wyndham and Melton councils, Wyndham is responsible for maintaining this section of Boundary Road. Melton maintains Boundary Road west of Tarneit Road.

Dog attacks on the increase By Alesha Capone Forty-seven dog attacks against a person have been reported to Wyndham council so far this year, a dramatic increase compared to last year. The council’s city operations director Stephen Thorpe said there were 32 dog attacks against a person in Wyndham in 2017. Three dogs were put down last year as a result of serious attacks. One dog has been put down up to September this year. Mr Thorpe said since January last year, the
council had taken 12 cases involving serious dog attacks to court. So far this year, the council has also issued four fines to owners of offending dogs for “minor attacks” compared to eight fines for minor attacks last year. “Dog attacks happen right across Wyndham, but the majority over the past year have occurred in Hoppers Crossing, Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes,” he said. “Council is aware of the danger associated with dogs not being under the control of their owners, and we take this very seriously.”
Mr Thorpe said council rangers took a number of measures to help prevent attacks, including conducting random audits of dangerous, menacing and restricted breed dog owners. He said that within Wyndham, five dogs owned by residents had been declared as “dangerous”. In Victoria, councils can declare a dog as dangerous if they have bitten or attacked a person or animal, resulting in death or serious injury. In comparison, councils can declare a dog as

Fashion with a loud eco Underground Runway had also been shown in a student showcase at this year’s Melbourne Fashion Week. Stephenson said she was inspired to create the “eco-fashion” clothing collection by using synthetic materials and plastic bags after learning about sustainability within the fashion industry. She said she melted the plastic bags and fused them to fabric to make the intricate patterns. “I really love the fabric I created – it was a lot of work but worth it,” she said. “It’s very exciting to see your work go down the runway.” Underground Runway will be held from 6.30pm on Thursday, October 18. Hoppers Crossing fashion student Katelyn Stephenson will have her designs showcased on the catwalk in Chadstone next week. Stephenson, 21, is studying for a bachelor of fashion design at Holmesglen Institute. Her work and that of her fellow students will be featured in the Underground Runway event at Holmesglen’s Chadstone campus next Thursday. Stephenson said she did not think she would go into a creative industry after graduating from secondary college. But after starting a bachelor of science, she realised it was not the career path for her, and so swapped to fashion. “I really love being creative – I’ve always been a creative person,” Stephenson said. “I love designing clothes and cute things, and combining my love of science and animals into my work.” She said the designs to be featured in

Next chapter for families Ms Mokrzycki is writing and illustrating her own children’s picture book that celebrates family diversity as part of her PhD. Last month, she was awarded top prize in VU’s annual Three-Minute Thesis competition, where she had to present the essence of her research to a non-academic audience within three minutes. She then progressed to the Asia-Pacific finals of the competition, where she made it to the top 10. “It just sounded like a really fun idea, trying to put together everything that you’re doing – a three-year, full-time amount of work – into three minutes,” she said.

A Point Cook PhD candidate is challenging family stereotypes in children’s picture books. Victoria University researcher Sarah Mokrzycki said family in kids’ books was predominantly white with a mum, dad and often a boy protagonist and failed to represent Australia’s 51,000 foster families, 99,000 step families or 961,000 single-parent families. It’s a theme that jumped out at her four years ago when Ms Mokrzycki and her husband became foster carers. “I hadn’t really been consciously aware of it until I started fostering and realised there are no books for my children,” she said. “It’s not just foster families – other families aren’t represented as well, and why aren’t they in picture books?”

The decision by the federal government to hold a royal commission into the aged-care sector is welcomed by the industry, says Ross Smith, managing director of Manor Court Werribee Aged Care. “It will hopefully expose and drive out of our industry a very small number of operators and individuals, who have overseen neglect and poor resident care,” Mr Ross says. “It is important that the public is aware that the recent incidents highlighted in the media have occurred only in a small number of facilities. “Manor Court Aged Care is flying the flag in Wyndham. We have just been advised by the quality agency that, at our most recent audit, we were found to be fully compliant in all of the 44 standards that we were audited against. “The industry is subject to regular unannounced audits – usually more than one a year. The focus of these audits is to speak to a large random selection of residents, families and staff member to gauge resident satisfaction and identify problem areas. “Here at Manor Court, we believe that every older person who needs care and support in a residential aged-care facility, as well as their families, should expect high standards of care, safety and service, delivered with empathy and professionalism. “We are committed to openness and transparency in relation to the quality of care we provide. “We believe that everyone in our industry must be accountable and committed to continuous improvement. We therefore welcome ongoing reforms that will make our industry better, more person-centered and that build the capacity of our dedicated staff.” Manor Court – the first aged-care facility in Werribee, operating for more than 40 years – has an established and qualified team of nurses, carers, lifestyle, and service staff. Nursing director Kerry Bailey says the team couldn’t be more chuffed with the 44/44 accreditation score. “The management team is so proud of staff members who maintain the service to the residents for 365 days a year, and not just on the days of audits”, she says. “Just as a family provides a safe environment for their loved ones to fulfil their potential, so does Manor Court.” Manor Court Werribee Aged Care, 5 Hogan Grove, Werribee. Werribee war tribute announced By Alesha Capone A new memorial will be built in Werribee to honour soldiers from the area who died during World War I. Werribee MP Tim Pallas and representatives from VicRoads on Friday presented the Werribee RSL with a cheque for $184,410 to fund construction of the memorial. The announcement was attended by VicRoads manager of network improvements, policy and programs Sohail Muhammad, the
engineer in charge of the project, David Ibod, and Wyndham councillor Henry Barlow. RSL branch vice-president David McDiarmid welcomed the funding. He said the new memorial should be built by Anzac Day next year. “I’m looking forward to seeing it getting done,” Mr McDiarmid said. He said VicRoads had already planted 110 new trees along the Princes Highway to replace those that had been removed from an Avenue of Honour.
Mr Pallas said the new memorial would be built at the corner of Princes Highway and Cherry Street, the start of the Avenue of Honour, which was established in 1918. He said the memorial would include the names of 64 fallen soldiers from the Werribee area, with each of the names etched on to individual bluestone blocks that will form two rounded walls to represent the shape of a poppy. The centre of the monument will contain a granite structure featuring an etched
Australian Rising Sun badge and a carved Sword of Sacrifice. A gravel path leading to the memorial will be lined with plants of Gallipoli rosemary and Anzac roses. A plaque will be laid to mark the Governor’s Tree, a sugar gum planted in 1928 at the corner of Princes Highway and Sneydes Road. The plaque will celebrate William Calder, a former Country Roads Board chairman who is credited with the development of Victoria’s arterial road network.
Duo formulates a win as the winners, she initially thought the judges had made a mistake. “But winning the competition has helped to increase my confidence,” she said. She and Ananya received trophies, participation certificates and gift vouchers for their winning effort. “We want to encourage other students our age to think about entering the competition next year – it’s a great opportunity,” Ananya said. Himani, from Suzanne Cory High School, won the year 8-12 section, adding to her victory from last year. Alesha Capone

Friends Ananya, 12, and Hely, 13, won the section for year 6-7 students in the budding boffin contest, held last month during the Wyndham Learning Festival and open to students aged between 10 and 18. Ananya and Hely said their entry was a model based on the idea for a domestic fertiliser generator to turn food waste into fertiliser through a five-step process including shredding, heating and cooling. During the competition, they presented their idea to the judges and answered questions. The girls said the benefits of the generator were that it would prevent rubbish going to landfill and cut down on chemicals used to manufacture fertiliser. The girls said they felt a mixture of nervousness and excitement during the contest. Hely said that when they were announced

Labor’s pitch for new hospital
Council yet to set new mayor election date Wyndham council has not yet set a new date for its mayoral election after the majority of its councillors successfully applied for leave when the vote was due to occur. Wyndham council corporate affairs manager Emily Keogh said a report would be tabled at an upcoming meeting to determine a new date for the mayoral election, which was originally scheduled for November 21. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Wyndham council no longer has a quorum for this year’s mayoral election, with six councillors on leave for that week. Councillors Tony Hooper (state election candidate), Walter Villagonzalo (state election candidate), Aaron An (state election candidate), Josh Gilligan (campaigning for Labor party), Heather Marcus (knee operation) and Intaj Khan (travelling overseas) will all be on leave and unable to vote come November 21, forcing a change of date. Ms Keogh said no other council meetings or events would be impacted by the councillors’ leave. She said it’s the first time in memory the majority of councillors were on leave at the same time. “We don’t have records indicating that a majority of councillors have been on a leave of absence at the same time before,” she said.
By Benjamin Millar Footscray’s crumbling hospital will be rebuilt opposite Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus under a $1.5 billion election pledge by the state government. Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Sunday that a returned Labor government would fund a new 504-bed hospital with capacity for 20,000 emergency department admissions and 15,000 patients a year above those dealt with by the existing hospital in Eleanor Street. The new hospital is planned for the corner of Geelong and Ballarat roads, a site chosen from a shortlist of three locations, including the current hospital site. Construction is scheduled to begin within two years and the hospital would be open by 2025. It is planned that the current 290-bed hospital will remain operational until the new hospital opens. The election sweetener follows years of criticism over the state of the existing and outdated hospital, built in the 1950s. Australian Medical Association Victoria president Julian Rait last month told Star Weekly that the 65-year-old hospital was at risk of catastrophic failure and plagued by leaks, cracks and failing equipment. “No one has ever questioned the quality of the care provided by the whole team right across Western Health, particularly here at Footscray Hospital,” Mr Andrews said. “The challenge is to make sure that we have buildings to match the quality of care,

attention, love and support that is provided.” Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the new Footscray Hospital would join a new women’s and children’s hospital in Sunshine in taking pressure off other hospitals, helping redirect up to 17,000 western suburb residents away from the inner-city hospitals each year. Opposition health spokeswoman Mary Wooldridge said the opposition recognised the hospital needed to be rebuilt, but that Mr Andrews could not be trusted to deliver the project. “This announcement is a stand-alone announcement for a hospital on the eastern fringe of the western suburbs and gives no detail as to how other health and hospital services … will complement and fit together,” she said. Ms Wooldridge did not commit to matching the funding if elected to government, arguing the state should be focusing on providing healthcare in areas such as Melton.

Fuel theft campaign fires up By Alesha Capone A new Crime Stoppers Victoria campaign aimed at petrol thieves will be rolled out at fuel outlets in Wyndham, Geelong and Hume across the next three weeks. The state government last week announced $95,000 in funding for the We See You Too campaign, which will be installed at petrol stations with a high record of fuel thefts. Minister for Police Lisa Neville said anti-theft messages would be displayed at bowsers and digital displays, plus online and in the media.
Ms Neville said the campaign was developed in partnership with Victoria Police, petrol station operators and industry associations. She said it was estimated that fuel theft cost retailers up to $20 million per year and that Victoria Police spent roughly 21,000 hours investigating the crime annually. “Our investment in this Crime Stoppers campaign will help Victoria Police crackdown on petrol thieves and sends a strong message to would-be thieves that petrol theft is a crime that will be prosecuted,” Ms Neville said. “We know that when fuel theft does occur

“My second favourite part of the show is building a forest out of the set pieces, it reminds me of good times in Rawcus.” Bradsworth said she joined Rawcus six years ago and also does hip-hop dancing. Spring Safety for Pets
NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
S is for Spring, a great time of year to enjoy having pets especially if you consider these tips to keep your pet safe. S is for sunstroke, a risk on hot days. Ensure pets have plenty of shade and water and smaller pets such as rabbits may need to be kept indoors. Do not exercise pets in the heat of the day or ever leave pets in the car. Dogs which sunbake should have pet sunscreen applied daily and kept in the shade to avoid skin cancer. White cats should always stay indoors. S is for seeds, with grass seeds often lodging in the ears and feet of hairy dogs. Avoid areas with long grass, check your pets coat regularly and have your pet groomed to keep their coat short and managable. S is for snakes who love to emerge on a warm day, so avoid pets walking in long grass and near rivers. Snake bite is a life threatening emergency with signs including vomiting, collapse and respiratory failure. S is for snail-pellets, another dangerous toxin if eaten in the garden by your pet. Signs include seizures and collapse and veterinary treatment should be sought immediately.
Club pokies knock-back By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council has knocked back a Werribee Football Club plan to boost poker machine numbers at The Tigers Clubhouse. Five out of the eight available councillors last week voted against plans to approve 10 new poker machines at the Old Geelong Road venue, which would have increased the number of machines from 75 to 85. The new machines formed part of an overall $1.69 million redevelopment proposed for the venue that also included construction of a new storage area and outdoor courtyard and extension of the liquor licence area.

In submitting the application, the football club argued that revenue generated by the additional machines would help to ensure its continued viability. It received approval for the new machines from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Regulation in May, but also needed planning approval from the council. Councillors Josh Gilligan, Intaj Khan, Aaron An, Peter Maynard and John Gibbons voted against the plans, and Henry Barlow, Mia Shaw and Tony Hooper voted in favour. Cr Gilligan said the proposed plans were “not in the best interests of Wyndham”. “The latest gambling results … show that Wyndham is, on average, about 10 per cent higher than our record pokies losses of last year,” he said. “If that rate continues for the next couple of years, we’ll well and truly be the

machines would not be appropriate for the wider community’s interest.” Werribee Football Club chief executive Mark Penaluna said the club would discuss the matter – including whether or not to appeal the decision – at its next board meeting.

Civic centre parking fix in sight By Charlene Macaulay A further 35 carparking spaces could be created at Wyndham council’s civic centre to help reduce the number of council staff parking on neighbouring streets and service roads. The council is investigating plans to create a one-way circular road that would allow for 35 new spaces on one side of the access road. The plans follow a petition from a group of medical practitioners located along the Princes Highway who called on the council
to provide its employees with adequate parking so that they no longer need to park along the service road fronting the clinics. A further 35 spaces could also be added to land at the rear of the SES building if the first proposal is found to be successful. The council will also develop a long-term carparking management plan for the civic centre and will introduce parking restrictions along the Princes Highway service road after consulting the relevant landowners. numbers had resulted in a lack of on-site parking for civic centre staff. “I believe this problem is of our own making and a quicker short-term solution needs to be found here,” she said. “While council staff should not be held to a higher standard than any other resident of
this city, staff should not be parking in the on-street parking spaces that have been paid for by individual businesses. “The intent of those carparks are for people using the services of the businesses on the service road.” Cr Shaw also said the council had put Werribee CBD businesses at a disadvantage by making them apply for business permits to use the Cherry Street carpark, while the West End carpark at the other end of Watton Street offered all-day parking without a permit.
Fun on the airwaves For two hours on Tuesday afternoons, community radio co-hosts Brett Hunter and DJ Kitty Kat bring laughs and live interviews to the airwaves. They host a show on 88.9 WynFM, which is based in Werribee, from 1-3pm. Their show, which used to be named Ships and Giggles, is now called Brett and Kitty Kat. Mr Hunter said the show started with a few other co-hosts, including comedian David Chappel and singer Ricky Muscat. Ms Kat, who is also a DJ, singer and fitness model, started on the show about eight months ago after she met Mr Hunter at a music event. “We weren’t really sure where we were headed – we just jumped behind the mics to see what happens,” she said. “It works. He talks and I give him crap – a lot of people say they enjoy our chemistry. “It’s a funny, light-hearted show to forget about the working week.
“It’s just fun – the two hours fly past, we just be ourselves.” Mr Hunter said guests interviewed on the show had included NBA player Eric Gordon, Warwick Capper, Anthony Koutoufides and Dr Karl Kruszelnicki. Mr Hunter, also a comedian, said he and Ms Kat enjoyed interacting with their listeners through Instagram and Snapchat. “We just love that – we love the videos they send of us of what they do while listening to the show,” he said. MY WYNDHAM Gerald Faustica has spent his life in Wyndham and is involved heavily in the community as a businessman and his work with the Italian Sports Club, the St Andrews Fair and the Werribee Districts Football Club, reports Charlene Macaulay.
I was born in Footscray Hospital, but I’ve lived in Werribee all my life. It was a small country town to what it is now, a big metropolis. I went to St Andrew’s Primary School and I went to Glen Devon Primary School, and then I went to Werribee High School, which was the only secondary school in the town back in the early ’70s. What was the area like when you were growing up? It was a country town where everyone knew everyone. My first job I worked at a supermarket called Inserra’s. I was there for 12 years and then I bought, with my brother-in-law, a milk bar, which is where The South Corner cafe is now. I ran that for 20 years and I’m very familiar with a lot of people in that area. Now I’m one of the owners of Bevmarks Beds in Hoppers Crossing. What’s kept you in the area all this time? I think just family, friends. I played sport here when I was a kid too and it’s my home. As a kid growing up, we always had the stigma of the sewage farm, but I think we’ve progressed a lot since then. I’m really proud I live in Wyndham. We’ve got one of the best basketball stadiums going around, one of the best swimming centres going around, one of the best football facilities going around with the big development of Avalon Oval, we’ve got
a private hospital now – it’s really progressed a lot. I’ve been involved in the St Andrews Fair for 30 years, I’m on the committee of the Italian Sports Club, I’ve been on the committee there for 15 years so I consider myself a well and truly rusted-on local. Tell me about your family. Married, we have two children – well, we had four, but we lost two – and a couple of grandchildren, that’s probably the key focus of our lives these days, being proud grandparents. My son John had muscular dystrophy and he passed away about 10 years ago. He was a great kid. He was actually an Olympic torch bearer in the Sydney 2000 Olympics. It was a very proud day for us. John was a twin, and [his twin sister] only survived four weeks. It was very tough at the time. If there was something you could change about this area, what would it be? I think the traffic and the congestion is really the most difficult thing. Obviously it wasn’t built to cope with what it is now, and it is a constant headache for everyone. What’s your favourite place to grab a coffee or a meal? I’d say the Italian Club for a meal, but I really like what they’ve done at The South Corner cafe. Whenever I go there, you’re always meeting locals that were there when I was there, and they just love it.
(Joe Mastroianni)

In a move which has taken the district by surprise the Education Department has drastically changed existing zoning arrangements in relation to catchment areas for secondary students. Students in Hoppers Crossing, east of Derrimut Road and not already enrolled in schools in Werribee will be sent to Laverton High School next year following the Education Department’s recent decision.
A slanging match between Werribee election candidates and the re-elected member, Dr Ken Coghill, erupted on Monday, following allegations that voters were being spied on during Saturday’s voting. The allegations were made by independent candidate Cr John Gibbons and the endorsed Liberal candidate, Mr Alex Mather, after Labor’s Dr Coghill was re-elected to serve his fourth term as Member for Werribee.
A newly-elected ALP member for Lalor, Ms Julia Gillard, believes plans to build a toxic dump in Wyndham had a significant impact on Sunday’s federal election. A swing to the ALP of just less than 2 per cent confirmed the electorate, which Ms Gillard inherited from long-serving member Mr Barry Jones, as one of the safest nation-wide for the party.
A former champion boxer who knocked a man through a window to his death was sentenced to 17 years’ jail in the Victorian Supreme Court last week. In sentencing Khalid Baker, 21, of Hoppers Crossing, Judge Simon Whelan said he was satisfied “beyond reasonable doubt” that Baker’s “violent and aggressive fighting on the landing was a substantial cause of Albert Snowball’s death”.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir goes back to basics with some tasty burgers Burgies in Hopper Crossing is a sibling to one in Campbellfield. The photos we’ve seen suggest an outdoor and rather rustic operation, so we’re not at all sure how we’re going to go on a sunny Sunday that is also windy and chilly. After scoping the place out, we relax … having discovered that while orders are indeed processed outside, right next door is a big, warm and rather inviting dining room, its fittings seemingly niftily constructed from packing pallets. Cool! And whatever the meteorological challenges of ordering and dining amid the glorious tack of the Golden Mile, the place is doing very, very brisk business. This is a popular joint. The happy staff members are cheerful, chatty and efficient; the wait times about what you’d expect. We order, pay and settle in for what we hope will be a good burger repast. The menu and its lowish prices suggest solid and satisfying – and that’s pretty much how it goes for us. The chips ($4.50) are orthodox, hot and good. My kefta burger ($9.50) is definitely the big winner of our meal. It has lamb patty, cos lettuce, caramelised onions, pickles and “humus sauce” – and it’s beaut, especially given the $9.50 price tag. Bennie is less enamoured with his Flaming
BURGIES Address: 226 Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing Phone: 8742 2792 Burgie ($11) of beef, cheese, cos lettuce, tomato, jalapeno, tomato sauce and chilli salsa. The parts are of sufficient quality, but he finds the sum to be just average. So for him, the highlight of our Burgies sojourn is his caramel biscotti gelato thickshake. When/if we return, we may well order from the chicken burger list, as a poultry pair we observe being consumed at the next table look pretty darn good and better than either of ours.

FIRE ACTION WEEK
7 - 14 October 2018 Stay informed
Message from the Premier This week is Fire Action Week, a time for all Victorians to start planning for a long and hot summer ahead. Low rainfall over winter has dried out much of the state and forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology of a dry and hot summer means that we need to prepare for an earlier and longer fire season. Our dedicated emergency services are working with communities, businesses and local councils to reduce the risk for our state.
So please, talk to your family, friends and neighbours about your plans, and make sure you know when to leave and where to go to stay safe. You can also find out more information, monitor warnings and check the daily Fire Danger Ratings at emergency.vic.gov.au Taking the right steps now could make all the difference.
Recent bushfires – both here in Australia and overseas – remind us of the need to understand our own fire risk. Planning and preparing for fire is a responsibility that belongs to everyone.
The Hon Daniel Andrews MP Premier of Victoria
FIRE ACTION WEEK THE RIGHT TIME TO PREPARE IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO BE READY THIS SUMMER. Prepare your property, fire plan and emergency kit now. The reasons are black and white.
emergency.vic.gov.au Download the VicEmergency app
1. Plan what you’ll do in the event of a fire, talk to your household and know where to access information on high risk days. 2. Keep grass short. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass. 3. Get rid of dry grass, leaves, twigs and loose bark around your home. 4. Remove or prune shrubs near windows and under branches of mature trees.
5. Cut back overhanging tree branches close to property – no branches within 10 metres. 6. Keep gutters and roof areas clear of leaf litter (if you are physically able to). 7. Remove all materials from around the home that could burn, such as boxes, furniture and woodpiles.

In Melbourne, the sale of a house during a campaign rises from 63 per cent to 84 per cent when it is advertised in a newspaper. Data has been collated to create an industry service called Media Maximiser, which tags almost every property that comes on to the market with its original price, where it was advertised, when it went on the market and was finally sold, and the difference between the asking price and the final deal. This research is the first from a non-newspaper publisher that provides statistical evidence of the value of print. The amazing results have given publishers further evidence that print is still a powerful tool. 2

It’s close to the station, eateries and Princes Freeway entry, and is zoned for elite schools – MacKillop Catholic and Werribee Secondary colleges and Corpus Christi Primary School. Tassie oak floorboards are laid throughout the light and bright house, including in the three fitted bedrooms that share a smart bathroom with freestanding tub and a timber-topped vanity with raised basin. An L-shaped lounge-dining room behind the front door abuts an appealing kitchen with white cabinetry, timber benches and a fab Falcon dual-oven range. A split-system, wall heaters and ceiling fans keep things seasonally comfy. The spacious backyard has a garden shed, veggie boxes and plenty of room for personal projects.

Property of the week
TARNEIT 27 Hollows Circuit, 3029 PRD Nationwide: 9742 7557
Price: $569,000 – $595,000
Within a three-minute stroll of Davis Creek walking trails and Werribee River, this house shines with great presentation and a lovely sense of light and space. It’s the same outdoors, where all is insanely neat yet not a challenge in the upkeep stakes. In other words, young families will love it. Entry is under a porch into a wide hallway beneath a bulkhead ceiling. The hallway has a mid-grey accent wall and laminate matte floorboards, the latter continuing into the living domain farther along. Double doors on the left open to the spacious grey-carpeted main bedroom with deep-grey accent walls that contrast nicely

with the white trims and timber blinds. A dressing area has been created with a wall of dark cabinetry facing mirrored robes, while the open en suite has dual basins. The next-door study nook, carved from the original walk-in robe space, is a clever addition; it has a workstation and shelves. The remaining two fitted bedrooms, one with bright farmyard-motif murals, are along an open-plan hallway they share with a smart main bathroom, separate toilet and laundry with overhead cupboards. The living space is zoned via a recessed island wall, with a sitting area in front and meals-kitchen and another sitting space
behind, the latter with a designer wallpaper accent wall. The meals area, with designer lightfitting, is bounded by timber blind-dressed windows that provide garden views. The kitchen, with an expansive island bench beneath orange pendants (a shade picked up in the wallpaper), has a stack of pale timber-look cabinetry, cream splashback tiles, a cupboard pantry and a 900mm cooker. Ducted heating, a split-system and multiple ceiling fans provide effective temperature control and there’s an alarm. A long timber deck runs along the back

of the house and looks out to a good wedge of manicured lawn, boxed garden beds and large-format bamboo screening the fence. A garden shed is tucked in one corner. Paving flows from the deck around to the side, another spot to set up seating. From there, a timber walkway leads to a pebbled fire pit area. A three-minute drive from Tarneit West Village shopping centre and Bethany Catholic and Westgrove primary schools and Islamic College of Melbourne, the property has a double garage. SPORT Lakes star aims higher By Ewen McRae
■ Lachie Hunter was always going to be a sportsman of note, his breeding made that obvious. His father Mark played 130 games for the Bulldogs but his mum Colleen is a sporting icon, and not just to those in the lacrosse world, where she made her name. Colleen’s talent was one thing but her courage and determination on and off the field is the stuff legends are made of. Little wonder some of that shows through in the way Lachie plays the game and the type of person he is off the field. Mark had a fair bit to do with his coaching during his junior days at Williamstown Juniors but it was always about the team, not the individual. Those individual honours will come and they have, with a Charles Sutton Medal to add to his 2016 premiership medal. The father-son rule might provide more riches for the Bulldogs with Rylee West set to join the kennel in the draft, and he might not be the only one. ■ Chris Endres from Hoppers Crossing is the 2018 Barry Priest medallist after a stellar debut year for the Warriors. Unfortunately Chris was not present on the night to collect his award which is a major disappointment and something club’s should address. The highest honour in the competition should be treated with respect. We all understand it is not the AFL (thank God) and everyone has a life outside suburban football but this night deserves to be the pinnacle and treated accordingly. The Alan Smith Medallist (Nathan Montague of Manor Lakes) and the Ron and Thelma Anguin Medallist (Brent Sheean of Point Cook Centrals) were there, as was Gemma Anderson (Manor Lakes), the inaugural senior women’s winner, and the three under 19 winners Brody Searle, Jack Callaway and Zane Neicho. This is not a crack at Chris Endres, but for the third year in a row the Priest medallist winner has not attended and it should not happen next year.

Award winner chases team success

Newly crowned Western Region Football League division 2 best and fairest Nathan Montague is hoping for some team success in coming seasons. After several top five finishes in recent years for the Manor Lakes midfielder, the best-and-fairest win came as no surprise to those at the awards night, but the man himself was shocked. “It was a good night in the end for me, but it was an unexpected win as far as I was concerned,” Montague said. “I knew I’d had a good year, but so had plenty of other blokes, so to get to the end and win it was a bit of a shock.” Montague was the runaway winner in the end, polling 21 votes to be eight votes clear of Reece Duffield (North Footscray) and Brandon Lester (Yarraville-Seddon). He said a revamped training program in the pre-season helped him reach new heights, and allowed him to play some new roles.
“I tried to get fitter so I could run out games better,” he said. “In previous years I’ve run out of steam, so just changed a few things in the off season to build my engine up and it seems to have worked. “I’ve definitely felt better towards the end of each quarter and it’s also allowed me to spend a bit more time up forward and kick a few more goals.” Manor Lakes finished fifth on the ladder, but Montague hopes that some key returning personnel and a new coach will lift the side to finals in 2019. “We had high hopes at the start of the season, but were a bit up and down after a few injuries,” he said. “Hopefully we can turn that around. “We’ve got Dion Lawson in … he’s a quality coach and player, so hopefully that will help us recruit a few players, keep everyone on the park next year and we should go all right.”
■ I will endeavour to keep you posted on cricket highlights during the summer but ask all clubs to send me news from your club. Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club will be letting its supporters know what is happening via a regular podcast through mypodcasthouse.com. If other clubs are interested please let me know. West Newport is celebrating its 80th year on Saturday, October 20 at the Loft Reserve rooms from 7pm. If you want more information contact Matthew 0428 036 797 or Victoria 0449 155 537.

The Western Region Football League’s inaugural women’s MVP has not given up hope of showing her wares on the national stage after a dominant season for Manor Lakes. Gemma Anderson, who was named league best and fairest last week by 10 votes, admitted she was shocked to claim the award after four years out of the game. “It was a bit of a shock to be honest – not just winning but to do it by so much was definitely a surprise,” Anderson said. “I went in knowing I would do OK, but I didn’t expect that. “I think I came into the season not knowing how I would fare, not looking at anything like a best and fairest, let alone a league award, so it was pleasing to have that year after a bit of a lay off. “I think the development I’ve had as a person in those four years off definitely helped me with my football and staying more consistent.” Anderson has previously played with VFL powerhouse Darebin and Melbourne University, but was talked into playing for Manor Lakes this year after being approached by a friend at her local Crossfit class. “I never stopped kicking the football and always thought I could potentially return to playing,” she said. “I was having a kick at Crossfit one day and one of the girls said I should come down to pre-season and see how I feel – and the rest is history. “It took me a couple of weeks to find my feet again, but the coach gave me a lot of freedom to play my role in the team and not be locked into a position, so that was really refreshing.” Manor Lakes was the dominant side in the first year of the WRFL women’s competition, going through the season undefeated on its way to a premiership. Anderson won the best-on-ground medal in the grand final triumph. Anderson, 35, is setting her sights on a potential AFLW deal, with only one minor hiccup to overcome. “I want to be the best footballer I can be and play at the highest level I can, so a year like this has been really good for my confidence going forward,” she said. “I wanted to enter the draft, but when we looked it up we found out I was two days late with the paperwork, so we’re seeing what we can do on that front. “The window of opportunity for me is not as big as some of the younger girls, but I back myself in and I’m going to give myself every opportunity in terms of staying really fit and doing the work and seeing what happens.”

Werribee star heads for sunny times on the Gold Coast Werribee forward Josh Corbett is on his way to the AFL after being signed by Gold Coast on Monday night. The Suns signed the reigning FothergillRound-Mitchell medallist under special dispensation rules afforded to them and Carlton to help them rebuild their lists after years down the bottom of the ladder. Carlton and Gold Coast are allowed to sign two state league players each and either keep them or trade them as part of special AFL rules introduced this year. Corbett did not test in front of recruiters at last week’s draft combine, but the Suns’ recruiters attended several of his games this year to scout the 190-centimetre forward. While Corbett played just nine games for Werribee this year, he booted 22 goals and averaged 7.6 goals a game, earning the VFL most promising young player medal. Corbett will be joined at the Suns by SANFL key position player Chris Burgess, with Suns
list manager Craig Cameron excited at what the pair will add to their list. “We are rapt to be in a position to confirm that Josh and Chris will join our club,” Cameron said. “We’ve been really impressed with both guys. We believe the special assistance provided by the AFL will help us enormously in 2019. It means we can maintain our strong hand at the draft where we plan to select top-end talent, but these players will mean we can add much-needed experience to our list in 2019.” Meanwhile, new Werribee coach Mark Williams has spoken publicly for the first time since his appointment for the 2019 season, saying the community aspect of the club was one of the big drawcards when he was looking for his next coaching challenge. “It’s a community club and it really is about the community here and has such a warm feel about it,” Williams told the club’s Facebook page. “I’m really looking forward to meeting
the supporters and working with the more senior players as well to build ability and also their leadership and their understanding of what makes a great club. “We want to include the multicultural aspect of this community, because it is so diverse and nothing is more important to me than getting some of the multicultural kids up and playing because we know they’ve got some special talents.” Williams said he wanted to make Werribee a destination club. “We want to find coaches and players who can make this the best place it can be,” he said. “It might take a little bit of time, but when people get to hear what it’s like and the excitement – I mean I’m about motivation and coming up with different things to help people learn and showing the care to make people believe that this is a great club.” Ewen McRae

Werribee will be looking for a miracle turnaround if it wants to get a win over Caulfield following a batting collapse at the weekend. Werribee was rolled for just 96 at Caulfield Park, with Andrew Ford’s 34 the highest score as Caulfield flexed its muscles. Caulfield progressed to 2-54 by the close of play, with Werribee needing eight quick wickets this Saturday to claim points from the contest.
VTCA
Werribee Centrals had a tough first day of its Victorian Turf Cricket Association division two season, giving up first innings points to Glenroy on Saturday. Centrals were dismissed for just 78 in the 49th over, before Glenroy advanced to 2-104 in just 24 overs late in the day.

A run fest for United Tarneit saw it kick off its AE Lowe Shield A grade season with a huge win. Taking on Seabrook, United Tarneit racked up 1-358 off just 35 overs, with Charith Gunathilaka hitting a massive 170 not out. He received great support from Indika Massalage (91) and captain Udara Ilanka (63 not out). Seabrook was bowled out for 158 in reply, with Tharindu Darshana bagging 3-21 to be the standout bowler on the day.

Cats prepared for chase By Ewen McRae Hoppers Crossing let a golden opportunity to chase a small total slip through its fingers at the weekend, but is confident of a round-one win in Victorian Sub District Cricket Association south-west first XI. Travelling to take on Taylors Lakes, Hoppers had the home side on the back foot early at 4-41 before a rearguard effort from the lower order pushed the Lions total to 238 at the close of play. Cats coach Greg Kennedy said while his side had a chance to keep the total down, he was confident it had the batting order to chase down the runs this weekend. “Having 75 overs out in the field was a good way to get stuck into the season, but we probably weren’t as consistent with the ball as we would have liked,” Kennedy said. “Having said that, we think we’ve restricted them to a reasonable score on an oval that has a really fast outfield. I think the boundary 62 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 10, 2018
percentage on the day was as high as it is going to be all season. “We’ve definitely got the capabilities to chase that total down early in the year. Last year, in round two, we chased 315, so with a super fast outfield and a quality batting line-up that’s just ready to go, I’m confident we can get the job done.” Taylors Lakes made a brisk start, with former captain Michael Brne (18) hitting some nice boundaries early in the innings, but when Brett Smith got one through his defences, it sparked a mini-collapse for the home side. From 0-24, the Lions lost four quick wickets as Smith (2-59) and Khush Talati (3-23) struck to take control of the game. While the home side had a couple of stabilising partnerships, it went into the tea break at 6-107 after Talati removed teenager Marcus Just (38) and Kennedy had Vishesh Bansal caught behind. After tea, the game swung more in favour
of the hosts as it put on a 63-run stand for the next wicket and the Hoppers Crossing bowlers struggled for consistency. Important runs to Lachlan Marr (55) and Dilshan Kanchana (70) formed the backbone of the Lions’ fightback as they recovered to set a competitive total. Kennedy said Talati was the clear standout with the ball, but everyone played their role. “Everyone’s intent and our fielding was pretty great, but Khush, who was playing just his second game in the first XI, was probably the pick of the bowlers,” Kennedy said. “He charged in all day and gave us everything, but everyone bowled a spell that was pretty good. “Trent Said only bowled six overs, but got the big wicket with a really sharp stumping from Justin Goegan that got us back into the game as we were starting to slip behind. “So it was a good team performance in the end.”
Werribee has kicked off its division one bowls season with a heartbreaking loss to Melton at the weekend. Melton took the win 76 (14) to 72 (4), with the final bowl of the day disturbing the Werribee bowl and giving Melton four shots to win the final rink and also claim the match. Werribee will host FlemingtonKensington in this weekend’s round two match-up. The Werribee bowls club has been nominated by Bowls Australia for Bowling Club of the Year. The award will be announced on the Gold Coast on October 25, with president George Cairns attending the event. The nomination was announced in recognition for the number of diverse community programs run at the club, as well as for its successes on the bowling greens.
