Point Cook paddleboarder Dallas Harvey has won the heart of his community after rescuing a dog stranded on an island in a Featherbrook lake. Mr Harvey responded to a Facebook plea posted in a Point Cook resident’s group last week, asking for someone to save the dog, who appeared too scared to swim ashore. After news of Mr Harvey’s rescue efforts was published on Facebook, the father-of-two was hailed as a hero by many of his fellow residents. ■ Full story: Page 4 Alesha Capone
Libs in cop shop promise The state opposition has announced a $9 million commitment to build a police station in Point Cook if it wins the state election. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy made the announcement while in Point Cook on Friday. Mr Guy said the station would operate for 16 hours a day and would also have a 24-hour van, to patrol the Point Cook area. His announcement comes as the campaign for the November 24 state election heats up. In May, the state government released its annual budget, which included $41.4 million in funding to buy land for a new police station
at Point Cook and relocate the East Melbourne Police Station into a new building. The budget did not state how much out of the $41.4 million would be dedicated to each project, and the government has not answered Star Weekly’s questions on the matter. However Mr Guy said the state government has only allocated enough money to buy land for the Point Cook police station, not build it. He said in contrast, the $9 million in funding promised by the Opposition would pay for both land and construction of the station. Mr Guy said the site for the station was still being “scoped” but it would be built

within Point Cook’s activity centre. He said it would be up to Victoria Police to decide how many police would be based at the station. Liberal candidate for the seat of Altona, Christian Martinu said many Point Cook residents supported a police station in their suburb. “Everywhere I go, people are telling me they feel less safe … and they think a police station in Point Cook will have an important role servicing parts of the Altona electorate
and help keep them safe,” he said. Police Minister Lisa Neville said the state government had “already funded the land acquisition for a future Point Cook police station”. “We’re funding the biggest infrastructure build across Victoria Police in a generation, rebuilding and upgrading 43 police stations – that’s three times the number of station upgrades funded by the former Liberal government,” she said. ■ More

Neighbours fail to keep their cool By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham residents have dobbed in their neighbours more than 1200 times over the past four years for noisy air-conditioning, barking dogs and other noise complaints. Figures obtained by Star Weekly reveal a total 917 residential noise complaints were received over the 2014-17 calendar years, which includes noise generated by other residents, but not barking dogs or construction. A further 321 complaints were made about barking dogs over the same period.
Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the top five most common residential noise complaints were about the sound of air-conditioning, amplified music, power tools, barking dogs and construction noise. Mr Thorpe said the council had the power to investigate noise complaints and, where relevant, can serve abatement notices, improvement notices, prohibition notices, fines and, in extreme cases, can prosecute. He said the number of business and commercial noise complaints was significantly
lower because those complaints were typically investigated by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation. The EPA is currently undertaking a review into its residential noise regulations, with the current regulations due to expire on October 14. It has recommended that residents be able to use their air-conditioners until 11pm each night, instead of the current curfew of 10pm. It also recommends an exemption to these prohibited hours during Heat Health Alerts.

From Hoppers Crossing to Los Angeles, singer Arlene Zelina is sharing her vocal talents with a worldwide audience. Zelina, 28, grew up in Hoppers Crossing. At the age of four, she started singing and dancing classes at the Joanne Campbell Dance School in Werribee. A few years later she won a singing competition at Werribee Plaza with her rendition of the Etta James’ classic At Last. In 2010, Zelina began posting videos of herself singing on YouTube. Since then, her videos have recorded more than 14 million views. “I still can’t believe how many people watch my videos! It doesn’t feel real,” Zelina said. “But it’s the most exciting thing ever seeing people watch my videos and listen to my music from every part of the world.” Three years ago, after completing a bachelor of business (marketing) at Victoria University, Zelina moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a performer. She became the first Australian to be signed to Jason Derulo’s record label, but is now an independent artist. Zelina described her music as “very pop with some RnB and urban undertones”. She said she is working on a new record, with a single called Dream Of Me to be released late this month. “It’s a more mature sound compared to my previous releases,” she said. “It really explores the concepts of love and lust and how it’s sometimes OK not to fall in love but to indulge in lust.” Alesha Capone

This is despite air-conditioner noise rating as one of the most complained-about noise sources, according to the EPA’s regulatory impact statement. “[However], there is a trend toward increasingly quiet electrical appliances,” the statement read. Mr Thorpe said Wyndham council provided feedback as part of the review. “A change we’d like to see is a greater public awareness on the role and responsibilities of the various agencies that investigate noise complaints,” he said.

The Country Fire Authority (CFA) is still searching for land to build two new Wyndham fire stations, nearly 15 months after the state government allocated $7.5 million towards the projects. In July 2017, the state government announced $3.75 million apiece for the Truganina and Wyndham Vale fire brigades to build permanent bases and cope with population growth, with $1.5 million to be put towards buying land for each site and $2.25 million to build the stations. Both stations were expected to be complete by June 2019, but land has yet to be acquired for either station. A Country Fire Authority spokesperson said the organisation was still searching for suitable land for the stations and therefore could not provide construction timelines. “As land is still to be secured, the stations are now not expected to be completed by June 2019,” the spokesperson said. “The Truganina and Wyndham Vale brigades will continue to operate from their current stations until the new stations are operational, with no impact on service delivery.” Currently, Truganina fire brigade is leasing a site on Leakes Road and has separate buildings for the motor room, a meeting room and storage shed. A new station will put all this under one roof. Meanwhile, a new Wyndham Vale fire station is expected to be up to four or five times bigger than the current Ballan Road premises and would allow the crew to expand its numbers. Charlene Macaulay

Dog delight for paddle pup hero By Alesha Capone Dallas Harvey is being hailed a hero after rescuing a dog stranded in a Point Cook lake. Mr Harvey said he saw a post about the dog on Facebook just before 5.30am on Sunday, September 23. Point Cook woman Stefania Franciulli had posted in a resident’s group about the dog howling from an island in a Featherbrook lake. In her post, Ms Franciulli asked for someone with a kayak to help retrieve the dog, who seemed too scared to swim to the lake’s shore. The dog, a kelpie-cross named Pup Dog, had escaped from a Point Cook home three days earlier. Mr Harvey said that after seeing the post, he walked to the lake before returning home to fetch his paddleboard, dog treats and a collar. Mr Harvey, a dog owner himself, returned and launched himself on the water. He said he remained on the paddleboard for about 40 minutes, attempting to coax Pup Dog – who showed no interest in the treats – aboard. “I just had to get her trust,� he said. “Finally she put one paw on the board and jumped off, then around 10 minutes later I was able to get a collar on her.� While navigating back to the shore, he held on to a nervous Pup Dog with one arm and paddled with his other. Once back on land, Pup Dog was taken to the Harvey family home. Mr Harvey dried her and tried to feed her, although she declined the meal, falling asleep on the couch instead. member of the Facebook resident’s group found a post from the owner about his missing pet. Mr Harvey said Pup Dog’s owner made contact and came over to collect her, giving Mr Harvey a box of chocolates and thanks for his rescue efforts. After news of Pup Dog’s rescue was posted within some Point Cook resident groups on Facebook, several people praised Mr Harvey’s actions, describing him as an “amazing person�, “Point Cookian of the Year� and “an absolute legend�. Mr Harvey said he had been taken aback by all the attention. “I couldn’t believe it,� he said. “As a dog owner, you hope someone would do it for your dog.�

Numbers don’t add up for vote By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council no longer has a quorum for this year’s mayoral election, with a sixth councillor applying for leave over that period. Intaj Khan has applied to take leave between November 13-23, meaning the council will not have the majority of its 11 councillors present for the vote to go ahead. Councillors Tony Hooper (state election candidate), Walter Villagonzalo (state election candidate), Aaron An (state election candidate), Josh Gilligan (campaigning for Labor party) and Heather Marcus (knee operation) will also be on leave and unable to vote at the November 21 mayoral election. Cr Khan said he was taking time off to visit family overseas, adding that the trip had been “already planned”. While acknowledging that his leave was the “deciding factor” for the mayoral election, he insisted it had nothing to do with forcing a change of date. “If people don’t believe [my reasons], they’ll have to watch my Facebook page when I’m posting that I’m overseas,” he said. “That’s the reason why we were saying before, let’s postpone the date. “Moving it will not cause any issues at all. It’s better to have all the councillors democratically exercising their rights to elect the right people for the City of Wyndham.” This follows a failed motion by Cr Gilligan last month to postpone the election so councillors contesting the state election can participate. Wyndham council said it would not comment on the matter until the leave applied for by councillors Khan, Villagonzalo and An was officially received and endorsed at next Tuesday’s ordinary council meeting.

A new 54-bed inpatient mental health unit at Werribee Mercy Hospital has been officially opened. The stand-alone Clare Moore building houses two inpatient wards, including a women’s only ward with 15 beds, and individual patient rooms for privacy. It replaces the former mental health unit, which held 25 inpatient beds, and is available to adults with mental health concerns in Wyndham, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay. Mercy Health group chief executive Stephen Cornelissen said the new unit was designed to promote recovery and remove the feeling of being institutionalised. “Clients and carers have told us the Clare Moore building feels warm and peaceful,” Adjunct Professor Cornelissen said. “Individual rooms are spacious and sensitively designed, and areas within the building have been named to destigmatise mental health and promote recovery. The building was named after Sister Mary Clare Moore, a friend and confidante of Sisters of Mercy founder Catherine McAuley. She also worked alongside Florence Nightingale during the Crimean War. Werribee MP Tim Pallas, who attended the launch, said the new building would provide locals with the mental health services they deserve.

fortnight ago, I called for Wyndham councillors to throw the keys on the table and be replaced by administrators. As I wrote, guilt by association may cull a few good ones that don’t deserve to be tarred with the same brush as others, but politics is a dirty business. Reader feedback was very supportive of the suggestion, while acknowledging that not all councillors were at fault. That there will not be enough councillors available to reach quorum for the mayoral election next month is a total disgrace. The latest to be unavailable is Cr Intaj Khan, who is going overseas on a family holiday, making six of our elected representatives unavailable for the vote on November 21. When asked about his trip and its ramifications, Cr Khan told Star Weekly: “That’s the reason why we were saying before – let’s postpone the date. Moving it will not cause any issues at all. It’s better to have all the councillors democratically exercising their rights to elect the right people for the City of
Wyndham. This will be absolutely a much more better outcome for every ratepayer in Wyndham.” That is laughable. Like Christmas Day and Melbourne Cup Day, the date for the mayoral election is designated at the start of the year – it is not a surprise announcement. The attitude shown here is unacceptable, disrespectful and unprofessional. The possibility exists that three of those missing councillors won’t be returning at all if they are successful in the state election. But if they are beaten, they will return to represent those very patient ratepayers they have turned their backs on. Let’s just throw the names in a hard hat and be done with it. Maybe whoever arrives first for council meetings gets the robes. The prestige of the position is diminishing by the hour. It probably was unfair to ask for all councillors to resign a fortnight ago, but I would be happy if the Sabbatical Six made that move. ■

Dog attack leads to 10-year ban By Alesha Capone

A Wyndham Vale man has been banned from owning a dog for 10 years, after his three American Staffordshire terriers killed another dog in an attack earlier this year. The man had left his dogs in the care of his daughter, who was walking them in a Manor Lakes park located at the corner of Manor Lakes and Dalrymple boulevards on May 12, when they attacked a border collie. The man’s daughter and the border collie’s owner were unable to overpower the Staffordshire terriers. The eight-month-old border collie died as a result of the attack. The Magistrates Court banned the man from owning a dog for 10 years and issued the man and his daughter with fines totalling $7220.25. Wyndham environment and sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said the council seized the three terriers after the attack. The council’s bid to put the dogs down is being appealed by the dogs’ owner. The matter will be subject to an independent review, in accordance with the council’s Guidelines to Destruction of Dogs Policy. The dogs will remain in the council’s custody until a decision is made. Cr Marcus said the dogs’ owner had previously been issued with minor infringements and “had been warned about keeping his dogs under control”. “Following the attack, council … charged both their owner and his daughter with six counts of owning a dog which attacks and bites resulting in the death of an animal,” Cr Marcus said. “This attack was extremely vicious and has rightly resulted in an extensive ban.”

The stickers were put up last month at sites including the Wyndham Cultural Centre, the WEstjustice community legal centre and Wyndham Park. Some of the stickers included an internet address for a group called the Antipodean Resistance, which describes itself as “an
Australian National Socialist Youth Organisation” opposed to multiculturalism, homosexuality and the Jewish religion. The group’s website features the slogans “White revolution is the only solution” and “We’re the Hitlers you’ve been waiting for”. Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said council staff noticed the stickers in Werribee’s city centre last Monday and removed more than 130 from buildings and infrastructure within 24 hours. He said that the council had reported the matter to police.
“The sort of attitudes reflected in these stickers goes against what makes Wyndham a great place to be,” Mr Thorpe said. “Council strongly condemns racism and bigotry of all forms. “Wyndham is a proudly multicultural city that is made up of people from all walks of life and all corners of the globe.” WEstjustice chief executive Denis Nelthorpe said three swastika stickers had been stuck on the centre’s Watton Street windows, but that WEstjustice staff had removed them. “We’ve reported it to police and we
really don’t think they (the Antipodean Resistance) are worth a lot of time and effort,” Mr Nelthorpe said. “I think Wyndham has got a pretty good track record of being a place welcoming of diversity and I think these people are wasting their time.” Star Weekly contacted the Antipodean Resistance last week, via an email address on its website. An anonymous respondent said that the organisation’s followers had put up the stickers in Werribee because of “high racial diversity”.

It will be Nightmare on Dalrymple Boulevard this Halloween when the street’s residents pull out all stops in a spooky soiree. All aboard for rail yards By Charlene Macaulay A $172.9 million train stabling yard in Wyndham Vale is expected to provide more trains, more often along the Regional Rail Link network. Construction is expected to begin in coming months on the yards, which will be built near a stockfeed mill building along Hobbs Road and will have capacity for six trains, plus refuelling facilities, driver facilities and a bypass track connected to the Geelong line so trains can access the stabling yard without delaying passenger services. The stabling yard, which will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week when it is completed in 2020, will replace the stabling at E-Gate near Footscray, with that land being used to extend Wurundjeri Way as part of the West Gate Tunnel project. The new facility will employ about 24 people and has been designed to cater for future expansion. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the new stabling yard would accommodate the extra VLocity trains the government is buying for the regional network, and would allow for “future service increases”. “Having stabling located at different parts of the network gives you additional flexibility to run more services,” she said. “This location will be able to give us the capacity to run more trains from the Wyndham Vale area. “Given the growth along the Regional Rail Link, we need this stabling here and that’s why we’re building it.” Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the number of new train services for Wyndham had yet to be finalised. “There is a significant advantage to this

Wyndham council city economy director Kate Roffey said the council would work with the government to ensure there was minimum impact on residents during construction and operation of the stabling yard. Ms Roffey said the council was “fully supportive” of the project. Noise mounds have already been put in place to mitigate any noise coming from the facility.

Independent Altona candidate Tony Hooper has vowed to upgrade congested roads and reduce traffic bottlenecks if he is elected to Parliament. Releasing his Congested Local Roads Policy last week, Mr Hooper said installing traffic lights at the Sneydes and Point Cook roads intersection was necessary to improve safety. He said he would also campaign for: • Black Spot Funding for the Altona Meadows freeway entrance at Newland Street; • On and off ramps at Grieve Parade to divert the anticipated 7000 truck movements from Millers Road due to the West Gate Tunnel project; and • Easing congestion on over-capacity roads, with a focus on Point Cook Road, Kororoit Creek Road, Millers Road, Blackshaws Road and bottlenecks in Laverton. Mr Hooper said state government roads throughout the region were at, or over, capacity, with a lack of investment to blame. “It would be unfair to not acknowledge the investment by the state government into our region’s roads,” he said. “The Western Upgrade package announced a few years ago is not a small investment, and provides welcome additions to our road network, but it is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what is needed.” Charlene Macaulay

Bella looks to the future By Charlene Macaulay A Williams Landing family has charted their daughter’s cancer battle in a new book celebrating national cancer charity Redkite. Little Bella was only four years old when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. What followed was two-and-a-half years of chemotherapy. Then, only eight months after finishing treatment, Bella suffered a relapse and needed more high-dose chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant to save her life. Last week, she celebrated the one-year anniversary of her transplant and is doing well. Mum Vanie said the Royal Children’s Hospital put the family in touch with Redkite, which offered her the financial support to be in hospital with Bella 24/7. “With only my husband’s income to live on, we were fortunate that Redkite paid our car registration and some of our bills,” Vanie said. “They also offered us vouchers for Coles groceries and fuel. It greatly eased the financial pressures. “We felt very grateful and really supported with Redkite.” The family was chosen to share their story in a new ebook, the 30 Faces of Redkite, which recognises both the people behind, and recipients of, Redkite, which has provided support to thousands of young Australians with cancer for more than 30 years. Funds offer for good causes Not-for-profit groups in Truganina, Tarneit and some surrounding areas are being encouraged to apply for financial grants from the new Westbrook Community Fund. Applications are being accepted by groups within the 3027 and 3029 postcodes eligible for grants of either $500 or $1000 to support their causes. The Westbrook Community Fund is one of many community funds established by the Dennis Family Corporation across a number of its residential estates. Collectively, the funds have given away $600,000 in grants since introduced in 2002. Lori has it all stitched up For Manor Lakes resident Lori Collins, knitting and sewing is more than a hobby – it is her life’s passion. Ms Collins said while she was growing up, she loved wandering around the craft pavilions at the Royal Melbourne Show with her grandmother. “She instilled in me my love for sewing and creating,” Ms Collins said. She said after many years of wishing she had the courage to enter her own handiwork in the show, she finally took the plunge this year. “I am so incredibly proud to have submitted two exhibits that were designed, pattern-made and handcrafted by myself,” Ms Collins said. One of her entries, a handcrafted cloth doll, received a ‘highly commended’ award from the
show’s judges. Ms Collins said she was “beyond thrilled” with the result. Ms Collins said although some people might find knitting and sewing “uncool”, she was keen to pass her craft skills onto the next generation. “Being a woman in her 30s and seeing it as a dying art form, I want to be able to pass these skills down to my two-year-old little girl,” she said. “The skills and love of handcraft instilled in me by my grandmother, and then my mum, has been something that has given me so many opportunities in life – to study in fashion design, become a retail buyer and now start my own small handmade business.” Alesha Capone

Centre closure leaves health gap By Alesha Capone The closure of a medical centre that supported indigenous people in the west is being lamented as a “significant loss”. The Gathering Place Medical Aboriginal Corporation (The Gathering Place), which was based in Werribee for nine years, shut down last month. Founder and chief executive Colleen Marion said the Aboriginal-controlled organisation had provided culturally-sensitive healthcare services to indigenous people who were reluctant to attend mainstream services.
Ms Marion said The Gathering Place did not receive ongoing funding from the state or federal governments, apart from some funding dedicated towards an indigenous engagement program in schools. She said the centre had relied on grants and the money it made from clients who visited the medical professionals at its Werribee clinic. In March, The Gathering Place had applied for a grant from the federal Department of Health Indigenous Australians’ Health Programme (IAHP). Ms Marios said that a grant of about

The show, which has been retitled ‘TIG, portrays a parallel universe where people of colour have privilege and white people are the victims of racism. Featuring film, live theatre and original tracks by Melbourne rapper Ror Akot, the concert’s cast consists of young performers from the Wyndham community. Wyndham Edge, which is based in Hoppers Crossing, is run by Western Edge Youth Arts for residents aged between 16 and 25. The script for ‘TIG is the work of emerging African-Australian playwright Betiel Beyin. “Being part of a community theatre group that allowed me the opportunity to write a script entirely of my own experiences with race-related issues is amazing,” she said.
“The role reversals in the play clearly shows the division of race.” ‘TIG will premier at Night Waves, an event featuring young Wyndham artists, presented by Wyndham council and Western Edge Youth Arts, with the support of the Wyndham Community Cultural Foundation. The event will start with a performance from music artist Josh Ephrams at 6.30pm, followed by ‘TIGS at 7pm, on Friday. However, after the IAHP funding application was unsuccessful, it was decided that closure of The Gathering Place was the only option left. “It’s going to leave a gap here in Aboriginal health in the west,” Ms Marion said. The chief executive of Women’s Health West, Dr Robyn Gregory, said her organisation and The Gathering Place had worked together closely in recent years. “I do think the loss of a specifically Aboriginal-controlled community service in
the western region is a very significant loss for our community,” Dr Gregory said. A manager from Odyssey House Victoria in Werribee, Victor Bilous, said the loss of The Gathering Place would leave a “breach” in health services in the west. “It has been important for our service to be able to engage with the Aboriginal community and work with Colleen,” he said. Federal Indigenous Health Minister Ken Wyatt said that the Health Indigenous Australians’ Health Programme received a large number of applications every year and that not all were successful.

EPA on the trail of ‘smelly’ flood By Alesha Capone A business located near the Federation Trail in Laverton North has been issued with a minor works pollution abatement notice after an investigation into “smelly” water flooding the cycling path. In July, the Bicycle Network said Federation Trail was “flooded and impassable” because it was completely submerged between Little Boundary Road and an underpass at the Western Ring Road. Cyclists were forced to detour via Pipe Road
and Little Boundary Road. Tarneit cyclist Jason van der Paal said he had contacted several authorities about the “smelly water” flooding the trail. He described the water as having a “horrible stench, like rotted organics coming from it”. A spokeswoman from the Victorian Environment Protection Authority said it had received several reports about the water across the trail. She said the matter had been referred to the Wyndham Officer for the Protection of the
Local Environment (an EPA officer working with Wyndham council), who traced the source of the water to a nearby animal hide business. The EPA spokeswoman said the business had connected its wastewater to a stormwater drain that was discharging near the trail. She said the business had been issued a minor works pollution abatement notice to stop the discharge of polluted water to stormwater. “EPA and City West Water will work with the business over the next few months to further improve their wastewater and site run-off
systems and ensure it doesn’t happen again,” the spokeswoman said. The water on the trail has been removed by a contractor engaged by Major Road Projects Authority. Major Road Projects Authority project director Frank De Santis said the organisation was confident the issue had been resolved. “We’re reopening the Federation Trail to full capacity,” he said. Mother of all podcasts Hoppers Crossing’s Holly Brunnbauer has launched a podcast featuring Melbourne mums. Last year Ms Brunnbauer, a mother-of-two, started a blog called Motherhood Melbourne where she shares the stories of other mothers. “I wanted to provide an opportunity where everyday Melbourne mums could contribute their story to heal, be heard and to help others who have had a similar experience,” she said. Ms Brunnbauer said that through her blog, and the many amazing mothers she had met, she had also been inspired to begin her own podcast, called Mamas on a Mission. The weekly podcast, which launches this month, features interviews with Melbourne mothers who are, in some way, helping to improve the lives of other parents. Wyndham insolvencies rise By Alesha Capone The number of total insolvent debtors recorded in Wyndham hit 350 in the past financial year. According to the Australian Financial Security Authority (AFSA), an executive agency in the Attorney-General’s portfolio, this is the highest number of insolvent debtors reported in Wyndham during the past five years. During that time, the number of insolvent debtors in Wyndham included 289 in the 2013-14 financial year and 331 during the 2016-17 financial year.
Of the 350 total insolvent debtors recorded in Wyndham in the past financial year, 193 were debt agreement debtors (compared to 158 in the previous 12 months). Debt agreements are contracts between debtors and creditors in which a debtor will pay debts by installments. But many debt agreements involve high administration fees, charged by professional debt agreement administrators and the AFSA, and result in some debtors paying back more than what they owed in the first place. WEstjustice chief executive Denis Nelthorpe
expressed concern at the “significant rise” in debt agreements. He said that while debt agreements might be helpful for people who owned a small business or their own home, the agreements were “particularly unhelpful” for people on Centrelink allowances. He said that free legal centres and financial counsellors might sometimes recommend a person enter into bankruptcy, but would “rarely – if ever” recommend a debt agreement. “In most cases we don’t believe they are particularly helpful,” he said.
“The debt agreements can last for multiple years and people can often struggle to meet the payments long-term.” Mr Nelthorpe said debt agreements could last for up to 10 years. He said that some people did not realise businesses that advertised they could help people enter debt agreements actually had a financial interest in doing so. He advised anyone considering entering a commercial debt agreement to seek free, independent legal advice from a community legal centre or financial counsellor.
Second life for bargains A group of big-hearted volunteers is based at the Brotherhood of St Laurence op shop in Hoppers Crossing. The store, which opened in its present location in October 2014, is staffed by volunteers from the Wyndham community. Store manager Scott Parsons said the team enjoyed accepting donations and helping customers. “Our team also enjoys the opportunity to socialise and create new friends while keeping busy and helping the community,” he said. He said the store sold items including clothing, homewares, furniture, manchester, records and toys. “Each purchase helps the Brotherhood of St Laurence fund our many different programs helping the community,” he said. “The funds raised go towards funding the many different programs the BSL provide. “Such programs include our aged care facility
in Fitzroy, early learning centres for youngsters and families, Money Saver programs to learn how to manage your finances and helping disadvantaged youth prepare for getting a job.” Mr Parsons said the best part of working at the shop was the regular customers. “Some of our regulars will surprise our team and bring in a specially made cake, that feels really special,” he said. Kick-off for soccer fun With the school holidays in full swing, young people will get a kick out of a new sports event coming to Wyndham. The first-ever Wyndham Sports Fest YOUTH CUP will be held in Truganina on Friday. Hundreds of young people are expected to attend the one-day tournament, which is open to teams of players aged 12 to 25. Wyndham mayor and sports development portfolio holder Peter Maynard, said the inaugural event was being run in partnership with the council’s Youth Services, Football Federation Victoria, Melbourne Victory Football Club, Reclink Australia and Park Social Soccer Co. “Soccer is more popular than ever, especially
following the recent World Cup, so we’re expecting a lot of young people to take part in this great event,” Cr Maynard said. “There will be prizes, giveaways, food trucks, free activities for kids and, of course, the main event.” The tournament will be held on Friday, October 5, from 9am-4pm at the Arndell Park Community Centre, 29-49 Federation Boulevard, Truganina. On average, 91 babies are born in Wyndham each week – and it’s our collective duty to help them thrive. So next year in Wyndham Vale, we’ll be opening a new community centre featuring kindergarten rooms and much-needed health and support services for children and families. The centre will also offer community meeting rooms and informal spaces so the local neighbourhood can connect. Construction is well underway, and this week I showed around Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas MP, sharing with him what will make this place special. Along with kindergarten facilities, the centre will also include maternal child health services, as well as consulting rooms for early childhood specialists and family support. Having these under the one roof means local parents will have better access to these services at a critical time in their children’s development. The centre will also feature spaces for events and services for the local Aboriginal community. It’s our hope that this will foster cultural exchange to bring our community even closer. Many thanks to the Victorian Government, who helped make this happen as part of $8 million towards early childhood projects being funded across Wyndham. Regards, Peter Maynard

MY WYNDHAM Michael Lim recently started working as the service manager of Mercy Place Wyndham. He chats with Alesha Capone.
I am the new service manager at Mercy Place Wyndham and have been here for the last three months. Prior to working as the service manager at Mercy Place Wyndham, I was a facility manager at a 210-bed residential aged care facility in Prahran. I have also been working in residential aged care as a facility manager for the last 15-plus years. My nursing career started back in 1979 when I travelled from Malaysia to England to do my nursing training. After spending more than nine years working as a nurse in England, I decided that it was time to move to Australia. In Australia, I started working in a major hospital in Melbourne and also worked casually with the Royal District Nursing Services. I decided to work in aged care back in the year 2006 as a registered nurse, working weekend and night duty, and this is when I realised that working in aged care is a very fulfilling job. I have been in aged care since. What do you enjoy most about your job? I enjoyed the challenges and diversity working in aged care. I have a huge amount of respect for the elderly and I am a person who loves to help people. There is so much to learn from the experiences of the elderly. A little bird told me you and your wife will soon move into Wyndham Harbour. Now that our children have grown up and are in university, it is now time to start living our dream in living by the bay and getting back

into our hobby of fishing. We looked around a few coastal areas and finally settled for Wyndham Harbour. At Wyndham Harbour, you can walk along the coastal path, all the way to Werribee South boat ramp. It will be even better when the coastal cycling and footpath linking Wyndham Harbour to Point Cook is completed. Werribee South also has a vineyard close by. Werribee River is also in the area and
has a good accessible walking path. Werribee Mansion and Werribee Zoo are also attractions that we like. Do you have a favourite spot in the area? I like Campbell’s Cove the most. I have been to Werribee Mansion numerous time with families and friends.
Where in Wyndham do you like to eat or get coffee? I like Ramae’s Cafe in Wyndham Harbour, sitting in the cafe drinking coffee/tea overlooking the beautiful harbour. Ohana Pizza is also one of my favourite pizza places, with a wood oven pizza overlooking the harbour and Port Phillip Bay.

The large and controversial abattoirs complex planned by H. W. Greenham and Sons Pty. Ltd. took another step forward at last week’s Werribee Shire Council meeting with the granting of approval to build the complex. This application, along with most others in the Laverton North noxious trades area, has been vigorously opposed by the Sunshine Action Committee which wants development of this area brought to a halt.
Elders plans to boost Victoria into the world market of wool scouring by building a $27 million plant at Laverton North. Plans for the wool scouring plant in Dohertys Rd were announced by Elders IXL chairman Mr John Elliott at the Werribee mayor’s inaugural breakfast last Wednesday.
The Wyndham community appears to be on the edge of a victory in the fight against the CSR proposed toxic dump. The Mayor of Wyndham, Councillor David McLaren, yesterday (Tuesday) confirmed that three weeks of confidential negotiations with CSR had led to a positive turn in discussions.
Only days from the start of the cricket season, the ongoing drought has forced some Wyndham clubs to turn away players. In another blow, the proposed Werribee East recycled water pipeline which was to provide class A water to residents in Manor Lakes, Bluestone and the proposed Riverwalk estates from next year, has been delayed for a further three years.

Not only did Heta win, but she won on technical knockout after the referee called a premature halt to the fight. Heta leads a busy life as a sports dietician and group fitness instructor at A-Team Fitness and Boxing, and a mother to three children, Kwai, 5, Kaino 3, and stepson Kodi, 15, but that is not stopping her. “It’s really important for people who are our age to make the time to train and set yourself some kind of health and fitness goal,” Heta said. “What it gives you in return, the cost of time versus the benefit of how it helps you as an individual, it helps you be better in every way.” Lance Jenkinson

Young star is a major hit By Lance Jenkinson All roads lead to the United States for Newport Rams rising baseball star Nikau Pouaka-Grego. The ultimate dream for the young infielder is to make it to the Major League. He is so far on the right track to fulfilling that quest in what has been an impressive junior career. Pouaka-Grego represented Australia at the recent U15 Baseball World Cup in Panama. He is just 13 years old, playing against opponents who were more experienced and further ahead in their physical development. It did not deter Pouaka-Grego, who thrived on the big stage, featuring in some big wins with the Australian team over the likes of South Africa, China and Germany. It was an unforgettable experience for the enthusiastic youngster, who played at second base. “It was awesome,” he said. “I got to play against some of the top prospects from around the world and I got to see how other countries play baseball. “It’s an honour to represent my country. “You try to do everybody proud.” Pouaka-Grego’s success at second base was linked to building a good rapport with the shortstop. The pair of infielders were on the same wave length more often than not. “Me and our shortstop were close, we were tight,” he said. “It was easy to work out with each other on the field. “We pulled off some nice double plays and the game becomes easier when you’re up the middle with someone you can work with.” Pouaka-Grego had a fine tournament in the batters box. He finished with an average of .400 with four hits from 10 at bats, while also drawing an impressive five base on balls and had two stolen bases. “I hit pretty good,” Pouaka-Grego said. “I got a few hit by pitches and some walks, so I got on base a lot for the players behind me to drive me in.” The chance to work with some great coaches was another highlight for Pouaka-Grego. He learnt so much from head coach Andrew Kyle and his assistants Mark Pettitt, Brian Murphy and Grant Weir. “Everybody learnt something different about their own game,” Pouaka-Grego said. “We’ve got some new things we’ve got to improve on. “They were awesome to be around.” It was certainly not Pouaka-Grego’s first experience in the green and gold. The Williamstown High School student has featured in the under 12 national team in the past three world series played in the US.

The Seagulls’ much decorated midfielder Michael Gibbons added a Gerry Callahan medal to his trophy cabinet, while Sam Collins confirmed his status as one of the best outside the AFL, winning the Bruce Montgomery trophy. Both should be in different colours in 2019 as they certainly warrant a spot on an AFL list. They won’t be the only state league players in the spotlight, with Werribee’s Josh Corbett highly regarded and almost certain to be picked up and Footscray’s Will Hayes emerging as a possible recruit. It is hard to gauge what AFL clubs are looking for but it is good to see the blinkers are off and VFL football is getting the respect it deserves as a strong competition developing players who are ready to go in the AFL. ■ The 2018 grand final did not turn out to be the fairytale ending to the season Brody Mihocek would have liked, but what a great year he had. The former Port Melbourne and Werribee VFL player got his opportunity and made the most of it, becoming a vital cog in the Collingwood tilt at the flag. In recent years Kane Lambert, Liam Picken and Dale Morris have tasted AFL premiership success after doing the hard yards at VFL level. Talk about the future of the VFL is always fuelled by the desire of the AFL clubs and their reserves agenda. Maybe it is time to look at it from a different perspective and take into account the role played by the five stand-alone VFL clubs and the players emerging there. ■ Football has a few presentation nights to finish the season, with the WRFL Barry Priest medal to be presented this week, but cricket and racing now take the spotlight. Werribee’s international horse centre will be the focus of a lot of attention, with the overseas horses again expected to be prominent in the big races of the spring. While in the US, he has taken the chance to see seven major league baseball games, perhaps picturing himself on the field in the future. Last month, Pouaka-Grego strutted his stuff in front of the baseball talent scouts at a Major League Baseball invitational tournament in Lismore. “There was a bunch of scouts there and some ABL coaches,” Pouaka-Grego said. “It was good to showcase our skills and see how everybody else played.” Pouaka-Grego has his sights set on Victorian under-age representation in the short term, while further down the track he is keen to
secure a sporting scholarship at a college in the US. Pouaka-Grego is the October nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. Pouaka-Grego will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to assist him in achieving his sporting goals.

Louise Heta is basking in the glory of a 2-0 start to her boxing career. The Werribee-trained fighter decided to step into the ring for the first time as a 36-year-old and has made an immediate impression. Heta believes her greatest achievement is not measured in wins and losses, but the courage she displayed to take the plunge and have a go after years of putting it off. “It’s been a long time coming,” Heta said. “To get to a point mentally where I was ready to fight is actually more of an achievement than the physical side. “It’s been over 10 years of me going on and off with boxing and not being ready, then thinking I can do it and that little inner critic telling me I can’t do it.” Heta’s debut came in the Master Fit-Life Boxing Cup in Ferntree Gully. Werribee star’s impact saluted By Lance Jenkinson Sam Collins has rounded out a remarkable Victorian Football League season by taking out the Bruce Montgomery Trophy for Werribee’s best-and-fairest player. The key defender was the undisputed pre-count favourite and saluted with 53 votes to finish 15 ahead of the challengers. A new name was engraved on the trophy for the first time since 2014. Gun onballer Matt Hanson won the past three awards, but a foot injury ruined his season. Hanson was restricted to just five matches this year, but polled well in those games. Collins, 24, beat out midfield duo Tom Gribble (38) and Kurt Aylett (34). Collins was a prime target for most VFL clubs once he was delisted by the Fremantle Dockers and did not get selected at the draft. He showed why he is so highly regarded with his dependability down back, his incredible
reading of the play that led to an inordinate amount of intercept marks and his leadership of the defensive unit. Collins’ stay at Watton Street is likely to be brief, with experts tipping he will be drafted back to the AFL later this year after his stunning VFL season. He was honoured to take home the most coveted award in his first season in the black and gold. “It’s really humbling to be awarded this tonight,” Collins said. “To come back here and be able to play in front of my mum and dad is something I’m really happy to be able to do after the previous two years.” If it is to be Collins’ one and only season with Werribee, he will leave a fantastic legacy. His teammates and coaches spoke glowingly of his influence on the team in its move back to being a stand-alone club after breaking away from the North Melbourne alignment. “This year was a really challenging year for us, but I think everyone will look back and be

pretty proud of how it went,” Collins said. “We took it to the eventual premiers and played some good football … I think it’s something everyone can be really proud of.” Collins made waves across the competition. Named at centre half-back in the VFL team of the year, he finished third in the JJ Liston Trophy count for the league’s best-and-fairest,
Werribee plans to jump-start its season Werribee will have to be switched on from the get-go in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west group. The Tigers have the unenviable task of confronting powerhouse Caulfield in their opening game of the season at Chirnside Park on Saturday. Last summer, the Tigers missed out on the finals by just one game, which was mainly due to their horror start to the season, going winless over the opening six rounds. If Werribee is to make a hot start this time around, it will have to do it the hard way. Tigers captain-coach Tim O’Brien has not come up against Caulfield since it beat Werribee in the semi-final of the 2015-16 season, but has enough evidence to know it will be a tough first up examination. “It definitely will be a tough test,” he said. “They’ve won the last two premierships, so we’re coming up against a good and respectable club. “It gives us a good opportunity for the players to test themselves against a quality side.” Werribee has been training for the new season since early August. The Tigers preparation has largely been confined to indoor sessions, but towards the end of September, they did get a chance to train outdoors. A camp in Shepparton was a highlight of the pre-season. The Tigers played an intra-club game and did important team bonding. “It’s been a pretty good pre-season,” O’Brien said. “It was good to get away to Shepparton.” The sight of fast bowler James Freeman steaming in was a welcome one for Werribee supporters. The paceman has returned to the club after a year out of the game and is fit, fresh and firing. “He’s back after having a year off, so that’s a big get for us,” O’Brien said. “He won our club championship two years ago. “He was bowling pretty quick up there in Shepparton and was looking pretty fit. “He’s probably come back fitter than what he was when he was last playing.” Werribee has brought in Andrew Ford to bolster its batting. Ford was a proven performer at VTCA level as playing coach at Wyndhamvale and Footscray United. He will be hoping that form can translate to sub-district cricket. “He looks like he can play a bit,” O’Brien said. “He can concentrate on his own game without having to focus on coaching. “It will be good to see how he goes when he can solely focus on his batting.” Werribee won last season’s second XI premiership, so there will be some players knocking on the door from that side. 54 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 3, 2018

Nick Buykx was recognised for his work in the Wyndham community with the community award, while volunteers Jimmy Masterson and Ian Wilson were joint winners of the club person of the year award. It was an emotional night for departing coach John Lamont and outgoing player Nathan Laracy, who were both awarded life membership.

Werribee City winger Trevor Ssemakula won the 2018 National Premier League 2 rising star of the year award at the league’s annual Gold Medal Night. The lively Ssemakula was at his best for the Bees this season when he was making daring runs and producing incisive crosses. Brad Murray claimed the Danny Tiatto Award for Werribee City’s best player. The dependable midfielder finished with 99 votes, 10 clear of second-placed Ssemakula, while New Zealand import Jake Butler tallied 53.

Werribee Centrals will open their Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2 season in the friendly surroundings of Galvin Park. The Centurions will welcome Glenroy for a two-day game over the next two Saturdays. In division 3, Seabrook will return to the field on home soil against East Keilor, while Point Cook will entertain Footscray United. In division 4, Wyndhamvale will kick-start its campaign at home against Williamstown Congs.

Werribee Devils young gun Daniaell Herbert is a joint winner of the Big V Basketball youth league 1 men’s most valuable player award. Herbert shared the honour with Warrandyte Venom’s Cody Perry-Allamby. Herbert was a do-it-all player for the Devils, averaging 19.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists a game. Devils import Konor Kulas was named in the state championship men’s all-star five, while Herbert received that honour in youth league 1. Deng Chan was the men’s state championship young player of the year.

One of the great AFL grand finals saw the West Coast Eagles beat Collingwood in a thriller by five points at the MCG on Saturday.
