Tita nails her career

Tarneit nail technician Tita Turner is bringing her love of nail art to the world. Through her YouTube channel, Emerson Nails, Mrs Turner uploads nail art tutorials, comedy pieces, vlogs and behind the scenes videos of events such as the Sydney Beauty Expo. Her videos are watched by thousands of people across the globe. Earlier this month, Mrs Turner was presented with the Professional Nail Technicians Association’s 2018 Australian/New Zealand Digital Influencer of the Year award. She also recently won medals for her nail art photography, at the West Coast Cup in Perth and the Brisbane Hair and Beauty Expo. Mrs Turner, who qualified as a nail technician in 2016, said she never imagined that her career would take off the way it has. “When I started studying three years ago, I thought I’d be sitting at home, have my clients visit me and that’s it,” she said. “I do feel extremely proud that I’ve come this far, and to be recognised by so many amazing names and faces in the community, is wonderful. “I love the art, I love sharing the art – I enjoy doing it, but the fact people enjoy it makes it really worthwhile.” Alesha Capone

Wyndham crime stats fall By Charlene Macaulay Overall crime in Wyndham has dropped to its lowest rate in a decade, but sexual offences have soared in the past 12 months, new crime figures reveal. The latest data from the Crime Statistics Agency reveals total crime across Wyndham has dropped 7.8 per cent in 2017-18 compared to the previous year. This is despite a 33 per cent spike in sexual offences (from 281 to 374) recorded over the same period. Sexual offences include rape, indecent assault, incest, sexual offences against children and other sexual offences.

The category has been steadily increasing, with 165 sex crimes recorded in the 2012-13 data. Wyndham Police Inspector Marty Allison said sexual offences against children, particularly child pornography offences, were on the rise. “While there are some individuals in our society – not just Wyndham, but right across Australia – for reasons only known to themselves that keep pictures of children which are just abhorrent, we proactively go after those people.” He said the recent royal commissions into family violence and sex offences had

encouraged more victims to come forward, while a family violence program running across Wyndham, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay, which specifically asked victims if they had been sexually assaulted, has resulted in increased reporting. “It’s not a welcome increase, but it’s not surprising us,” Inspector Allison said. He also said he was pleased to see residents taking crime prevention seriously, a move he attributes to Wyndham recording its lowest crime rate per 100,000 population in the past 10 years. “It’s a remarkable achievement … it’s a whole of community action,” he said.

The area recorded significant decreases in residential aggravated burglaries (down 34 per cent), residential non-aggravated burglaries (down 20 per cent), car thefts (down 33.8 per cent) and theft from motor vehicles (down 23.8 per cent). Inspector Allison said police were currently cracking down on street robberies, particularly around shopping centres, train stations and bus stops and the surrounding streets and parklands. “We’ve had an increase in resources coming in to our local government area and we’re using those resources to deploy into those areas where we know those robberies are occurring.”

Council complaints high in west By Charlene Macaulay Residents lodged 74 complaints against Wyndham council with the Victorian Ombudsman, its latest annual report reveals. The Victorian Ombudsman’s 2018 annual report found that Wyndham ranked 18th out of the 79 Victorian councils for numbers of complaints, with neighbouring Geelong (115 complaints), Maribyrnong (85) and Brimbank (80) councils receiving more complaints over the 2017-18 financial year. Complaints about local government accounted for 22 per cent of all complaints

made to the Ombudsman during the past financial year. The report found that planning, nuisances, local laws, parking and rates were among chief council service concerns, while conflicts of interest, improper conduct, poor governance and complaint handling were also prominent issues. But the report stressed that the figures did not reflect the number of substantiated complaints made about each council. “If we do enquire into the complaint, in most cases we would seek to resolve it informally, rather than investigate,” the Ombudsman’s report reads. “Where a complaint is

A quorum for this year’s mayoral election is in jeopardy with four councillors to miss the meeting and another two likely to follow suit. Councillors Tony Hooper (state election candidate), Walter Villagonzalo (state election candidate), Josh Gilligan (campaigning for Labor party) and Heather Marcus (knee operation) will be on leave and unable to vote at the November 21 mayoral election. Cr Villagonzalo has yet to apply for leave, but it is expected he will do so at the October council meeting in line with Municipal Association of Victoria guidelines which state that councillors who nominate for state or federal elections should apply for a leave of absence from the council between the date of nomination and close of voting. Fellow councillors Aaron An and Intaj Khan were also thinking of contesting the state election. If they do, the council will not have enough numbers to hold the mayoral election, needing the majority of its 11 councillors to be present for it to go ahead. This follows a failed motion by councillor Josh Gilligan last month to postpone this year’s mayoral election so councillors contesting the state election can participate. Cr Gilligan insists his leave is not a move to force a change of date for the mayoral election, but said in light of the number of councillors taking time off over the same period he believes his motion was warranted. “You’ll find that many metropolitan councils don’t schedule their mayoral vote for the final week of the state campaign because a lot of people involved in local government are politically active. “This is a consequence really of not moving the date.”

A second Wyndham councillor has officially put his hand up to run in this November’s state election. Deputy mayor Walter Villagonzalo has been selected to run as lead candidate for the Democratic Labour Party and will contest a Western Metropolitan Region upper house seat. In a post on his Facebook page last week, Cr Villagonzalo said he would share both the official DLP policies and his personal ones in due course. “[As] a local resident of Hoppers Crossing and the western suburbs for 30 years and a full-time volunteer for more than 20 years … I wish to continue to serve and represent you in the Legislative Council of the Victorian Parliament,” he wrote. Cr Villagonzalo was elected to his first term on Wyndham council for Chaffey ward in 2016. He has yet to apply for a leave of absence from the council between the date of nomination and close of voting in accordance with Municipal Association of Victoria guidelines. His announcement comes a month after fellow councillor Tony Hooper announced he would run as an independent candidate for the state seat of Altona, which is held by Labor’s Jill Hennessy.

Kevin Hillier takes a step back to reflect on citizenship

ometimes we all need a refresher course on how lucky we are to live in this country and this part of the world. Often that is a daily delivery via the news, when you see some of the tragic and senseless events unfolding around the globe. Sometimes it can â€“ as it was for me recently â€“ be part of another personâ€™s experience, in this case becoming an Australian citizen. I was fortunate to be the MC as 30 conferees took the pledge and made a life-changing decision. The pledge is a very definitive commitment and worth sharing. I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people Whose domestic beliefs I share Whose rights and liberties I respect and whose laws I will uphold and obey For a variety of reasons these people have relocated and now reinvented their life in a foreign country. Their joy at the new life in front of them was evident by the smiles and disposition of all involved. It was an uplifting experience and one that made me reflect on just how good life is for the majority of Australians.

I was born here and have never considered being anything else but an Australian, which makes me very fortunate. We have a standard of living that is the envy of many and a general way of life that affords us many freedoms not shared in some other countries. We have our issues, but for the most part the positives outweigh the negatives by a lot. Our health, education and aged care systems are far from perfect but way ahead of many others, and personal safety is an issue in a similar position â€“ not the best in the world nor the worst. We are a pretty happy and positive nation with opportunities in a multitude of areas regardless of race, colour, creed or gender. As a country and people, we are a responsible global contributor and inclusive of other beliefs and lifestyles. At the conclusion of the ceremony last week the national anthem was performed along with the song I Am Australian. Both stirred emotions for those taking part and those looking on. Though I have to say the second verse of Advance Australia Fair never sounds right, and no one knows the words. â–

Teen arrested

Police have arrested a teenager in relation to an aggravated burglary in Habitat Court, Tarneit, on August 17. Police executed a search warrant at a Point Cook house about 8am last Thursday, where they arrested an 18-year-old youth and seized several electronic devices. Police said they believed the man was also involved in a number of other incidents earlier this month, including two separate robberies in Maple Crescent, Hoppers Crossing, and an armed robbery in St Albans.

Werribee song draws outrage By Alesha Capone A satirical song titled Werribee, which was launched by alternative rock band Funk Dancing For Self Defence last week, has drawn criticism for its depiction of the area. The song’s lyrics include: “Take me back to Werribee, where the girls are easy and the drugs are cheap”, “Check out the dropkicks selling drugs to high school kids,” and, “Werribee, you catch every kind of STD”. Western region MP Cesar Melhem said the song should be “taken out of circulation”.

“These people should take the song down and apologise to the people of Werribee,” he said. Mr Melhem said the way the song referred to girls was “disgusting” and “abhorrent”. Ratepayers of Werribee South president Dr Joe Garra said he was concerned by the song describing girls as “easy”, in light of sex crimes significantly increasing in Wyndham within the past two years. Western region MP Bernie Finn said he was worried the song would make listeners think badly of Werribee, given it seemed to be

trying to paint the suburb as “some sort of drug slum”. “Werribee, just like any growing suburb, does have its problems, but to condemn an entire suburb on the basis of this sort of nonsense is totally ridiculous,” Mr Finn said. Funk Dancing For Self Defence consists of Jake Kougi, Liam Cameron-Smith and Jon ‘Stixx’ Solli two of whom grew up in Werribee and still call the suburb home. In an email to Star Weekly, the band members said their single was “steeped in irony, sarcasm and humour”.

“We love Werribee, warts and all, and this is our way of celebrating it,” they said. “The song is marked ‘mature’ so it’s aimed at adults, and if there is an adult that’s going to take lyrics as gospel, then they’re the ones dropping the collective IQ of the town and we don’t need them in Werribee anyway.” The band said Cameron-Smith had worked in two Werribee nightclubs, where he had seen “the more filthy side” of the area. “To pretend that side doesn’t exist would have been dis-service to our Werribee mates and to the town itself,” they said.

Bookworms’ big reward These two bookworms have made a motza out of reading books. Grade 5 Lumen Christi Catholic Primary School pupil Makaira and grade 1 pupil Nicolas are the country’s highest and second-highest individual fundraisers in this year’s MS Readathon, raising $6153 and $3438 respectively. Their combined efforts helped Lumen Christi become the top fundraising school in Australia, raising more than $19,000 and beating second-placed Sydney Grammar (which raised $13,905) by a considerable margin. As a reward, the students each received an iPad, while the school will get new books valued at $1000 for their library. Makaira said she raised the money through a Bunnings barbecue, a morning tea at her dad’s work, and asking for donations through social media. Nicolas, who read 178 books over the month-long challenge, said his mum helped him to raise the money. “I felt really crazy [to have raised that much money],” he said. Brooke’s second shot By Alesha Capone There was a time when Brooke Evans would become exhausted by walking from her car to the living room. Despite multiple trips to the doctor, the Wyndham Vale resident was told she had asthma or lacked vitamins. It was not until Mrs Evans gave birth to her son Xander that she was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary hypertension, a lung disorder characterised by high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries. She was given a “cocktail” of medications, but they did not work, and she was placed on the waiting list for a double lung transplant. In January this year, Mrs Evans, 38, underwent a transplant at The Alfred Hospital. After the operation, she was placed into an induced coma. Mrs Evans’ mother, Dawn Thomas, said a few days after the operation, on a Monday, it was “a beautiful moment” when she saw her daughter take her first steps since the surgery, alongside Xander, now six. Mrs Evans said the organ transplant had changed her life. “It’s definitely given me a new lease on life, even on the Monday I got up and felt I could walk further than I could previously,” she said. Mrs Evans is now planning to attend the Australian Transplant Games, from September 30-October 6, to compete in darts. She will travel to the Gold Coast for the games with her husband Adrian and Xander. Mrs Evans said before she was diagnosed, darts had been the only exercise she was able to do, and she played twice a week with the Melton Darts Club. Police patrols to ramp up Westgate Highway Patrol has mapped out its game plan and will hit the west’s roads en masse over the grand final long weekend to tackle the top five causes of fatalities and serious injuries. Police from Westgate Highway Patrol, the uniform branch and state highway patrol will be out in force across our roads for Operation Scoreboard, which will run from this Thursday to Sunday in a bid to prevent road trauma. Westgate Highway Patrol Sergeant Marty Wallace said police would focus on speeding drivers, driver distraction, seatbelt non-compliance, fatigue and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Last year, nearly 300 speeding, seatbelt and other offences were detected on Wyndham roads over the grand final long weekend, including 88 speeding drivers, 80 drivers and passengers were caught without their seatbelts, 40 unregistered cars, 23 drivers caught using their mobile phone while behind the wheel and 17 unlicensed drivers. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings wants drivers to use common sense when behind the wheel. “Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles,” he said.

Population plan to slow growth By Charlene Macaulay

The power of speech proven A Hoppers Crossing student with a passion for politics and creating an environmentally sustainable future has been recognised by the state government for his efforts. Jagveer Singh, 17, was one of eight students to receive a VCE Leadership Award last week for his exceptional leadership qualities both in school and the broader community. The year 12 Hoppers Crossing Secondary College student has worked tirelessly to engage the community about the impacts of climate change and the importance of moving Australia beyond coal to renewable energy, and campaigned to stop construction of the Adani mine. He is a regular volunteer with the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, helped create a Green Team at Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, and created an Australian politics club within the school. This year, he was a member of the school’s Youth Parliament team. Jagveer, who plans to study law at Melbourne University next year, said he was pleasantly surprised to be a recipient. “I’m not a college captain and I don’t hold any official positions,” he said. “It really goes to show that you don’t need to have those powerful positions to make changes and be influential in the community, all you need is being able to talk to people.”

Wyndham council and developers have cautiously welcomed a state opposition plan to enforce population limits on growth areas lacking adequate infrastructure. Opposition Leader Matthew Guy has promised to establish a population commission if the Liberals are elected in November, which would work with all levels of government to determine how future growth will be managed and would recommend population limits on growth areas with a shortage of infrastructure and police, doctors, teachers and healthcare workers. Mr Guy has identified Wyndham as an area under pressure. “Planning restrictions on suburbs and towns will only be lifted once infrastructure and the numbers of police, doctors, teachers and healthcare workers reach specific levels,” he said. “I was jumping with glee,” she said. Renee said she started ballet lessons with Point Cook Performing Arts six years ago. Renee, 10, performed in the ballet company’s concert of Le Corsaire last month. “I loved taking part in the performance because the dancers in the main roles were dancing with us and near us as well, and it was great to be near them when they were on pointe and doing jumps,” she said. By Charlene Macaulay A recreational fisherman is less than impressed with the state of the Werribee South boat ramp just ahead of fishing season. Werribee’s Arthur Showell said with fishing season kicking off at the end of this month, the site needs dredging urgently. The Werribee South boat ramp actually comprises six boat ramps, two of which are shallow, and four floating pontoons, one of which is currently closed due to damage.

Home owners are being urged to ensure their pool and spa barriers meet safety requirements by Wyndham council and Kidsafe Victoria. The Safe Barriers Save Lives campaign, officially launched last week, is aimed at reducing toddler drowning deaths. The Royal Life Saving Society of Australia’s National Drowning Report shows that in the 2017-18 financial year, 18 Australian children aged 0-4 years drowned. More than two thirds of those drowning incidents occurred in swimming pools. Wyndham family friendly portfolio holder Mia Shaw said that in the lead-up to warmer weather, it was important for pool and spa owners to check the safety of their pool barriers, gates and surrounding areas, and to immediately repair any faults. “Pool and spa barriers tend to wear and tear over time,” Cr Shaw said. “Rust and damage can prevent gates from self-locking or ground movement can cause gaps underneath the fence.” The general manager of Kidsafe Victoria, Jason Chambers, said it was important for adults to supervise children in the water. “You’re going to have 400 boats trying to get in and out down there, and there’s no water,” Mr Showell said. “They still haven’t dredged out between the pontoons, and it’s getting shallower and shallower around there. “I was down there with a small tinny and a guy was launching a five-and-a-half metre boat and all the mud went up and through his propeller.” Wyndham councillor Mia Shaw said a combination of high winds and a change to dredging patterns by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) had resulted in a large amount of sand being deposited under the pontoons at the Werribee South boat ramp. “As a result, one of the pontoons, which is the least used, has incurred considerable damage. Although the two middle, double ramps and pontoons have been impacted by the build-up of sand, they are operating as normal,” she said.

Cr Shaw said Iramoo ward councillors recently met council officers at the ramp and a dredging plan is being developed which will be submitted to the DELWP for approval. “Our plan is to prioritise the repair and

dredging of the middle pontoons that have double ramps, and then the shallow ones.” But help is still months away – it can take the DELWP up to 60 business days to consider and approve an application.

Wish list for rail future

By Charlene Macaulay Labor has promised 11,000 new car parking spaces at train stations if it is re-elected come November – but it will not reveal which Wyndham stations, if any, will benefit. The government last week said it would spend $150 million building new carparks at some of Melbourne’s busiest metropolitan and regional train stations to unclog neighbouring streets and prevent commuters from driving from station to station for a park.

It is likely the program would involve a mix of ground-level and multi-storey carparks. A total of 1500 new spaces have already been promised along the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines but similar announcements have yet to be made for any of Wyndham’s five train stations, despite Tarneit train station being the second busiest V/Line station behind Southern Cross. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan did not answer Star Weekly’s question about how many, if any, of the promised spaces would be built in Wyndham. She also did not answer how the government would allocate car parking spaces across the train network, or the timeline for the project. “Additional stations across the network will benefit from the fund with more announcements to be made soon,” she said. Wyndham council city economy director Peter McKinnon said the council had yet to receive a local commitment.

Light rail and six new train stations have been proposed to improve public transport in and around Wyndham and reduce reliance on car travel. The suggestions form part of The Melbourne Rail Plan 2019-2050, which has been drawn up by the independent group Rail Futures Institute in a bid to push for high-quality public transport in and around Melbourne. David Hardy from Rail Futures said Wyndham needed six new stations along its metropolitan and Regional Rail Link lines – including stations at Derrimut Road, Truganina, Sayers Road, Davis Road, South Werribee and Black Forest Road. Meanwhile, a light rail system to be constructed in three stages – stage one between Hoppers Crossing, Point Cook and Williams Landing; stage two between Hoppers Crossing and Tarneit; and stage three between Williams Landing and Sayers Road – would help relieve traffic congestion. The plans were unveiled at a Committee for Wyndham breakfast last week. Peter Don from Rail Futures said Melbourne desperately needed a rail plan to adapt to a projected population of eight million people by 2050. “If you think there’s problems now with public transport issues, overcrowding – you ain’t seen nothing yet,” he said. “There is a desperate need to come up with a plan and implement actions.” Charlene Macaulay

Crash victim remembered A Hoppers Crossing man killed in a crash on the Western Ring Road has been described as a hard-working and loving family man who had only recently arrived in Australia after spending years in a Malaysian refugee camp. Joseph Lian Hrin, 34, was working with a friend installing telecommunications pits when the pair pulled over into the emergency lane to secure a load on their truck last week. He was standing near the back of the vehicle adjusting the straps when a crane truck, which police believe was “straddling” the emergency lane, hit him from behind. He died at the scene. Mr Hrin, who is originally from Chin state in western Myanmar, had only just got the job after arriving in Australia in late April with his parents and wife and settling in Hoppers Crossing. “He arrived as a refugee and he has been living in Malaysia in a refugee camp for more than six years,” said his cousin, Van Rahtin, who has lived in Melbourne’s west for 11 years. “Because of all the political issues, the persecution, he fled to Malaysia for refuge. “His wife is hysterical and she is grieving a lot,” she said. Ms Rahtin said her cousin was a family man who had been searching for work for months and had recently landed his perfect job. “He got a job with Metropolitan Communications Service at the end of June and then he started his job on August 6. It had only been more than five weeks,” she said.

That’s why the only thing I would like is to work in the industry, the same job he worked in Malaysia.” Wayne Harry, the owner of the telecommunications installation company that employed Mr Hrin, said despite barriers such as limited English, all his employees said Mr Hrin was an extremely hard worker. Police spent most of Tuesday examining the crash scene. The driver of the crane truck was interviewed by police then released. The funeral is being arranged by the Melbourne Chin Church, where Mr Hrin was an active member. An operation with bite Even lions have to visit the dentist, as one-year-old Ilona learned recently. The female cub, who was suffering from a tooth root infection, is on the mend after having four baby teeth removed at Werribee Open Range Zoo’s veterinary clinic. The problem was identified when the zoo’s lion keepers noticed swelling around Ilona’s mouth.

“She was eating well and there was no change in her behaviour but we still knew there was a problem,” keeper Katherine Quinn said. The zoo’s vet experts, along with specialist veterinary dentist David Clarke, took an hour to x-ray Ilona’s mouth and remove the troublesome teeth. Charlene Macaulay

A search for answers A Hoppers Crossing woman who has been diagnosed with two brain aneurysms is using her condition to help others. Maya Cremers has spent the past two years selling branded pens and craft items she made to raise $10,000 for the Stroke Foundation through her Facebook group, Brain Aneurysm Support Australia. Ms Cremers set up the group when she was first diagnosed with the aneurysms, which she describes as “two little ticking timebombs”, in May 2011 after she underwent testing because of frequent migranes. A brain aneurysm occurs when a weak area in a brain artery bulges and fills with blood. If it leaks or ruptures, it causes bleeding into the brain, known as a hemorrhagic stroke.

“Of course, the world fell out from under me,” she said. “I hate the unknown. So I decided … to search and search until I could find something that explained what it was, were there any other people I could talk to, and I found nothing along the second line of thought.” So, she set up her own group. Then, when someone brought up how they could donate, Ms Cremers found herself fundraising. She has already raised $1000 towards the next $10,000 she plans on donating to the Stroke Foundation, and said she would continue fundraising in $10,000 blocks. Magic of fundraising Pupils, staff and parents at Tarneit P-9 College took part in a special â€˜Dress up as your heroâ€™ fundraising day on Friday. The collegeâ€™s community engagement manager Emma Stevens said the day was held in support of pupil Milan and his efforts to help Challenge, a charity which supports children with cancer and their families. When Milan was three years old, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. While undergoing chemotherapy, Milan told his mother he wanted to share his birthday with other patients at the Royal Childrenâ€™s Hospital. Magic for Milan, an annual event during which Milan and his family collect presents

for children with cancer and also fundraise for charity, was born. Milan, who has been in remission for almost three years, was 10 on September 25. This year, he chose Challenge as the charity he wanted to support during Magic for Milan. The schoolâ€™s dress-up day raised just under $1555. Parents also donated boardgames to give to ill children. A jubilant Werribee Football Club president, Dennis Dove, told the Banner on Sunday that the win in the VFA Lightning Premiership was only the start of big things for his club. He was speaking after the Werribee side had become the first club from Second Division to take off the Lightning Premiership in competition with First Division clubs.

RAAF bases at Laverton and Point Cook will be closed if the Federal Government accepts the recommendations of a report commissioned by the Department of Defence. The Cooksey Report was commissioned by the Department of Defence as a total review of defence facilities around Australia.

The future of some parental and youth services within Wyndham remains in the balance after funding cuts have forced a job loss and shut-downs. The Werribee Support and Housing Group (WSHG) has been hard hit by recent Government cutbacks which will see a parent counselling service close down in December and funding for a youth mediation service cut for the second year running.

Firefighters battled a grassfire in Werribee South for six hours amid strong winds and dry conditions on Monday. Six CFA fire trucks and two command vehicles and police attended the 1.2-hectare fire off the Princes Highway and New Farm Road at 9.45am.

Road Policing Enforcement Campaign Operation Scoreboard 2018 Operation Scoreboard (AFL Grand Final long weekend from Thursday 27th September to Sunday 30th September 2018) is identified as a period of potentially high risk to the Victorian community in terms of exposure to road trauma. Westgate Highway Patrol Sergeant Marty Wallace said the AFL Grand Final public holiday on Friday 28th September 2018 provides an opportunity for families to free themselves from their usual commitments and it is anticipated that large numbers of people will use Victorian roads, often driving long distances in unfamiliar driving conditions. The times of highest risk are when people are leaving for holiday destinations and returning home. Police will be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes which are: • Excessive speed • Driver distraction • Restraint non-compliance • Fatigue • Impaired driving (Alcohol and/or Drug) Motorists are requested to stay within the speed limit, don’t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, leave your mobile phone out of reach, wear your seatbelt/child restraints and make sure you are well rested. Speed Cameras will be rostered in known high collision locations. Fatigue is one of the biggest killers on Victorian roads. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that you take at least a 15 minutes break at least every two hours and don’t drive if you are tired. Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways throughout the State. Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma.

RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council Chairman Mr Jim Giddings said it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face. Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the 2018 Operation Scoreboard Campaign for the AFL Grand Final Holiday long weekend would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. He asked the community to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers number 1800 333 000 Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road. If you plan to have a drink then plan not to drive, taking a big risk like drink and driving is just not worth endangering your live or other road users. Before embarking on any driving trips drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights.

MY WYNDHAM Hadi Chami lives and breathes Wyndham. The 25-year-old Truganina resident, who owns and runs Notorious Espresso in Werribee, is just about to add a second child to his growing family. He sat down with Charlene Macaulay to talk about his family, business and hobbies. What is your connection to the Wyndham area?

I’ve been married for three years. My wife grew up around here, she went to Westbourne [Grammar School] and now I live opposite Westbourne. We’ve got a son that’s 18 months old, Danny, and we’ve got another one due in three weeks. Another boy? A girl. You’ve had cafes elsewhere, why did you set up shop in Werribee? We had a place in the city, but I came down to Watton Street and just thought ‘wow’! I hadn’t been down here in about 10 years and I thought this place was awesome, it had so much potential. [Werribee’s] going through a phase where all the old stuff is moving out and new stuff is moving in. It had a lot of potential, a lot of foot traffic, a changing demographic. They’re the main

I do a lot of work at our community centre, it’s a Muslim community centre and we do a lot of events there. I’m one of the directors there, so I’ve got a lot of responsibilities there organising small events and stuff. Apart from that, a bit of indoor soccer. Coffee’s my hobby. How do you have your coffee? Either short black or a piccolo.

Tell me about your family.

There’s not much, really. Just roads, getting better infrastructure. In terms of everything else, it’s fine. General traffic around the area – my area near school time, you can’t move. It needs to be rectified. I don’t know why they didn’t do it when they did the infrastructure [western roads package], they completely just went past Sayers Road. But apart from that – the schools, parks, people – it’s good.

There is a faster way. You set your (water temperature) to 75 degrees. You put the egg in whole for fourteen minutes. Run it under cold water and crack it open. It is the yummiest egg you could possibly imagine.

Start saving now Young Melburnians looking to buy their first home in the city’s cheapest suburbs will likely spend at least five years saving for a deposit, a new report shows. Domain Group analysed entry-level house prices in the city’s most affordable areas, and estimated the amount of time required to save a 20 per cent deposit, using average wage data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. A dual-income couple aged between 25 and 34, who were each saving one-fifth of their post-tax income, would need to save for six years to come up with a $116,500 deposit for a property priced at $582,500, the report found. The city’s cheapest local government area to buy a house was Melton, which takes in Caroline Springs, Toolern Vale and new suburb estates such as Rockbank and Fraser Rise. An entry-level house costs about $424,000, and the report estimated a couple would spend four years and three months saving the $84,800 required for a deposit. Couples looking to buy in the western growth corridor of Wyndham, where affordable houses cost about $490,000, would need to put away money for five years. And in Casey, Frankston, Whittlesea, Brimbank and Greater Dandenong, it would take closer to six years. Entry-level property prices were calculated based on the 25th percentile of recent sales data. Cassar’s grand season By Lance Jenkinson A sumptuous reward awaits Darcy Cassar for an impressive bottom-age season with the Western Jets in the TAC Cup. The medium forward/midfielder will get the chance to take on the best under 17s in the nation in the AFL All Stars Futures match at the MCG on Saturday, which will be a curtain-raiser to the 2018 AFL grand final between Collingwood and the West Coast Eagles. Cassar is excited to be running out on to the hallowed turf before the superstars battle it out for the AFL premiership. “I was rapt when I found out I was picked,” he said. “It will be great to be a part of the best kids around the country. “It’s really good to be able to play on the ‘G, especially before the AFL boys run on to the ground. “All the recruiters will be out there, so hopefully I can show them what I’ve got.” Cassar has turned heads with his play this season. Jets coach Torin Baker loves the versatility in the 17-year-old’s game, deploying him as a high half-forward, wingman and even at times on the ball. A Keilor product, Cassar first came on the radar of the talent scouts playing for Vic Metro at the under 16 national championships. While Cassar is taking massive steps in the right direction, he is grounded and just wants to improve every time he pulls on a football jumper in a match or training situation. He closely monitored how more experienced Jets teammates such as Xavier O’Halloran or Connor Thar went about their business and is like a sponge when Baker is giving him advice. That will be no different when he turns out for Team Bartel alongside Jets teammate Emerson Jeka in the futures game on Saturday. “It’s been a really good season for me – I played all 18 games,” Cassar said. “It’s also been a bit up and down, a few off games and a few good games. “Everything can be worked on.” Cassar, an Essendon Keilor College student, got his start at Taylors Lakes Auskick. It was with his fellow Auskickers as an eight-year-old that he got his first chance to play on the MCG at half-time of an AFL game. Cassar went on to play for Hillside in the juniors before moving to Keilor. His biggest supporters are his dad Mark, who drives him to all his training and games, and mum Josie, who critiques his game. They are “rapt” their son is getting the chance to play on the ‘G on grand final day, but whether they will be there in the crowd or watching on television is to be determined.

AFL career of Ryan Griffen is over, announcing his retirement after 257 games, 202 of those as a Bulldog. The dual Charles Sutton medal winner, All Australian and former Bulldogs captain played his last game for GWS in its loss to Collingwood. Griffen’s exit from the Whitten Oval was one of the most unpleasant departures I have seen in my time at the club. I don’t know any more about the circumstances than anyone else who reads the papers, but it was not good for club or player. I always liked Griffen and found him to be good fun and a decent person. I hope Bulldogs supporters welcome him back in time, as his contribution during a difficult time should not be forgotten.

trophy cabinet at John McLeod Reserve just got a little more crowded with Deer Park adding yet another cup to the collection, defeating a brave Hoppers Crossing on Saturday at Avalon Airport Oval. Deer Park proved to be as unstoppable as ever, taking the club into new territory in suburban footy history. Kwame McHarg and Chris Stewart chalked up their sixth individual premiership medals and Stewart further enhanced his stature with a Herb Pascarl medal. A Barry Priest medal is all that is missing from his collection, and probably likely in a week’s time. Crossing veteran Matt Ryan has announced his retirement after 420 games with the Warriors. ‘Dimma’ has given his all as a player and leader at Hogans Road and was the benchmark for those who played with and against him. He had all the skills, an attitude that inspired and an ability to make those around him better.

football is in pretty good shape but the ongoing viability of clubs is a continuing issue. Inner suburban clubs are again feeling the pinch as the areas around them deal with a shift in population. There were many reasons behind the model Deer Park instigated. It had no juniors so it improvised and was fortunate to have the fiscal know-how to make it work. AFL premiership coach Mark Williams has been appointed Werribee Football Club’s new coach. Werribee has signed the former Port Adelaide coach for the next three seasons. He replaces John Lamont, who stepped down after five seasons in charge. Williams said the combination of the newly redeveloped Avalon Airport Oval, along with the opportunities presented by Werribee’s move to a stand-alone club, made the senior coaching role an exciting prospect. Since leaving Port Adelaide in 2010, Williams has had roles at Essendon and Richmond. Grand victory a privilege for Lions skipper Purton-Smith

Jack Purton-Smith described it as a “privilege” to captain the all-conquering Deer Park to the premiership in the Western Region Football League division 1. Purton-Smith, a former VFL player, stood up on the podium with coach Marc Bullen to collect the Lions’ record breaking sixth consecutive title after Saturday’s 48-point grand final win over Hoppers Crossing at Avalon Airport Oval. “It’s an amazing feeling,” Purton-Smith said. “I’m privileged to be a leader of this group.” Purton-Smith had the captaincy baton passed on to him by Chris Stewart in 2017. The 27-year-old has proven to be a popular leader, but one who can get his point across. In the lead-up to this year’s grand final, Purton-Smith initiated a players only meeting

to remind them what the Lions stand for, setting the tone for a big week that ended with hoisting the premiership cup. “I was rapt to hand over the captaincy to him,” Stewart said. “He oozes leadership on the field and off the field. “He’s got everyone together Thursday night to have a chat before we went into the main meeting. “He calmed the nerves.” Purton-Smith reckons the main edge that Deer Park has over the rest of the competition is their fit-for-finals regime. The Lions have undergone an intense training program – a second pre-season within the season, if you will – each time they have climbed to the summit.

It gets the Lions primed and ready for September and the benefits can be found in the second half of games. While the fit-for-finals program is a raging success, Purton-Smith jokes that the intense training can lead to a bit of moaning from the players. “‘Bully [coach Bullen] doesn’t know this, but a lot of the boys whinge to me about it,” he said. “He’s a super coach and no one has achieved what he has done, so it’s working and we’ve got to keep doing it … until it doesn’t work any more.” You can add good listener and an ability to maintain harmony between the coaches and players to Purton-Smith’s impressive leadership CV. Warriors look to future By Lance Jenkinson You are 15 minutes removed from seeing your team’s Western Region Football League division 1 premiership dreams go up in smoke, so you are devastated, right? Well, not so Hoppers Crossing coach Steve Kretiuk, who took a different take on the sadness felt by his players after their 48-point loss to six-time defending champions Deer Park in the grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Kretiuk preferred to focus on the many positives to come out of the season, rather than dwell on 120 minutes of football that largely did not go his team’s way. Few of the experts would have given Hoppers Crossing a chance of featuring in the grand final at the start of the season. The Warriors had a number of key players exit the club and that was compounded in the pre-season by some devastating injuries. In making the grand final, some believe the Warriors over achieved, or at least had success before their time. Even Kretiuk conceded at times during the tough early rounds of the season that a grand final appearance was an extreme long shot. So, while his players could hardly bear to watch as the Deer Park players celebrated on the podium at Chirnside Park, Kretiuk kept his 52 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 26, 2018

emotions in check and stood proudly for what his team had achieved, not what it had lost. “I think it’s the opposite [of devastation], it’s a proud day for the club,” Kretiuk said. “A lot of people wrote us off and didn’t even think we’d make the finals this year, so for us it’s about a celebration. “We got the opportunity to give our guys a chance to play on the big stage. “They’ll learn from it and they’ll get better from it.” Local football moves quickly these days. Preparations for 2019 start in the week following the season decider for the grand final sides. While Kretiuk is upbeat about what his young team achieved in 2018, he is still apprehensive about what it means for Hoppers Crossing’s future. Sustained success is the hardest for any club in an increasingly competitive WRFL top flight. The Warriors have done a great job of staying competitive in Kretiuk’s five years at the helm, featuring in a semi-final, two preliminary finals and two grand finals. Kretiuk is a realist though, knowing the gap between the best side, Deer Park, and the rest, is still large. For Hoppers Crossing to continue challenging for the premiership, it will need to operate more ruthlessly off the field. The Warriors are admired for their fast

tracking of youth and getting the best out of their players, but they need to start attracting some big name recruits if they are to add to their two division 1 premierships. “Something the club needs to get better at is professionalism off the field,” Kretiuk said. “Make sure we’ve got the right program away from [the] footy [department] so that we can seek out some experienced players. “We had the opportunity in 2016 after making the grand final against Deer Park and the club probably expected that we’d have natural progression, but it’s never a given that players are going to improve or we get better as a side, so we need to keep topping up our list and making sure we’re putting pressure on the players that are playing.” With the lack of depth brought about by departed players and long term injuries, Kretiuk felt that some players had coasted through the season and needed to work harder to bridge the gap on Deer Park. “We’ve got a lot of guys in this side that aren’t up to playing this brand of footy because of their preparation,” Kretiuk said. “They’ve either got to step up pre-season or they’re going to find themselves down a level. “These guys have a fair bit of work to do over the pre-season to match it with the better sides.” Kretiuk is back on board for a sixth season as coach in 2019.

Wyndham Suns had their best finish to a season in the Western Region Football League, but it was left yearning for more. The Suns featured in their first senior grand final in division 3, losing to Point Cook Centrals in the season decider. It was a tough end to an otherwise impressive season for the Suns. “I don’t think you can be happy just making the grand final,” Suns captain Asher Kirk said. You only had to look at Kirk post grand final to realise that Wyndham left it all out on the field on grand final day. Kirk had more of a look of an MMA fighter with a split above an eye and blood trickling down his face. It was a brutal grand final and neither team took a backward step. The Suns did not lose through a lack of endeavour, eventually going down 5.10 (40)-9.11 (65). “The boys tried hard,” Kirk said. “I’m proud of the boys for cracking in all day and putting their head over the ball. “It just didn’t go our way today.” Wyndham set the pace in division 3 to be the early premiership favourite. However, the Suns lost their way in the middle of the season, tumbling to the bottom half of the four and giving Point Cook Centrals and Tarneit a new lease of life. The Suns got their mojo back just in time for the finals and had big finals wins over Braybrook and Tarneit to book their spot in the grand final. The Suns got back to their physical best and it almost resulted in the club’s first senior premiership. “When we’re playing our best footy, we are physical,” Kirk said. “That’s what we’ve tried to drive into the boys the last three or four weeks. When we started playing as a team, we played amazing footy, but it just didn’t happen today.” Kirk is confident that Wyndham will give the premiership a red hot crack again in 2019. Lance Jenkinson

Six of the best for Lions By Lance Jenkinson This was a premiership with six appeal for Deer Park. The Lions broke new ground in becoming the first non-amateur top flight team in AFL Victorian metropolitan leagues to register an astonishing sixth consecutive premiership with a runaway 48-point win over Hoppers Crossing in the Western Region Football League division 1 grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Lions coach Marc Bullen is rarely lost for words, but on the day his club set a new record, he was taken aback. “I don’t know what to say to be honest,” he said. “It’s pretty raw at the moment. “It’s hard to explain.” The eight-goal margin would suggest that Deer Park had the game all on its own terms. That is half right, as the Lions did totally dominate the second half, but it was so far from the truth if you take into account a super competitive first half. Bullen was seething at quarter-time and rightly so. The Lions had the aid of a strong breeze and an extra man for 15 minutes after Hoppers Crossing’s Harley Armstrong-Weston was shown a yellow card, but they could not capitalise in the first quarter, finishing with 2.5 and a flimsy five-point lead. Hoppers Crossing had a chance to stamp its authority on the game in the second term, but they too did not make the most of the strong wind at their back. Ryan Kitchen ran into an open goal to give the Warriors a lead, but Herb Pascarl Medal winner for best-on-ground Chris Stewart replied with a stupendous goal to wrench the lead back. Instead of taking the ball out of the ruck, Stewart kicked the ball in mid-air from about 25 metres out and it fortuitously sailed straight over the goal umpires hat. from hard up on the boundary that would have been goal of the day in most other games had it not been for Stewart’s pearler. That would be the Warriors last lead of the game. James Wong and Stewart rounded out the quarter with goals to give Deer Park a 12-point lead at the main break. It was a crucial buffer because up until

that point Bullen was unusually tense on the sidelines. “I didn’t think it was going to happen for us in the first half of footy,” he said. “I thought it wasn’t going to be our day.” Never fear, Deer Park would find its very best form of the season in the second half. The Lions piled on 7.8 to 2.2 in the second half – only their wayward kicking for goal stopping it from being a total blow out. Once Mark Galea’s beautiful snap goal for Deer Park to start the third quarter was followed up by a long goal from teammate Wong, it seemed only a matter of time before the Lions would break the game open. Daniel Strnak, who had a stellar game as a small forward for Hoppers Crossing, got one against the run of play, but his team had to wait until time-on of the last quarter to get the goal umpires’ two flags waving again when Kitchen got a consolation goal. In between, it was all Deer Park. There were dominant Lions players on every line. Wong, after a slow start, became the most dangerous forward in the match, though Galea could have some claims too. Jason Kennedy was rock solid at full-back in his last game before going into retirement, while Rodney Van Riet’s experience shone through, Kwame McHarg got stronger as the game wore on and Trent Williams played a negating role. Jake McKenzie and Paul Bower, both superb ball users off half-back and through the midfield, were stiff to be second-best in the race for the best-on-ground medal. However, the honour simply had to go to Stewart. Bullen was tremendously proud to lead Deer Park to a record-breaking sixth straight flag. “It’s just a great feeling from a personal point of view and more importantly for the club to succeed six years in a row,” he said. “We could’ve lost two of the grand finals out of the last six by an inch and the challenge came at us today in Hoppers, who were sensationally coached and had a great game plan, but we managed to overcome them.”

So often during Deer Park’s record-breaking run of six Western Region Football League division 1 premierships, big man Chris Stewart has been involved in a key moment to change the course of a grand final. It should be no surprise Stewart was once again involved in all the big moments of the Lions 48-point grand final victory over Hoppers Crossing at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, earning the Herb Pascarl Medal for best-on-ground in the process. Stewart was tireless, roaming from the defensive 50 metre arc to his own team’s goal square and every blade of grass in between. He dominated in the ruck and was an imposing presence in the air when either drifting forward or backing back in defence. You hear the saying, we wish we had two of him, but Stewart covers so much ground that coach Marc Bullen would not be greedy enough to ask the football gods to deliver another Stewart. The best thing about Stewart, if you talk to his teammates, is he is all about the team. Stewart backs that up when securing the medal for best-afield in the grand final. “The Herb Pascarl was never on my mind,” he said. “There was only one medal [a premiership medal] that I wanted. “I did take a couple of good contested marks and played my role, but I thought Jake McKenzie was outstanding today, Trent Williams’ role on Ashlin Brown was sensational, and Paul Bower was an absolute star, he sold that much candy he could open his own store. “I’m obviously humbled and honoured to be recognised as the best player in the grand final.” Stewart provided three game-changing moments in the second quarter on Saturday. With the game in the balance, Stewart kicked the ball from the ruck contest from mid-air without taking possession and it struck his boot so sweetly it sailed between the big sticks from about 25 metres out. Moments later, when Hoppers Crossing was in the attack, Stewart drifted across for what could have been a goal-saving mark. The most underrated act by Stewart that quarter was his strong mark at the edge of the goal square and instead of going back with a goal he would kick 10 out of 10 times, he brought his teammate Jase Perkins into play for an easy goal. Stewart is one of only two players to play in all six flags, along with Kwame McHarg. Bullen has either been coach or player-coach in all six. By no means is it a ho hum experience for Stewart. “You feed off the players who haven’t played in one,” he said. “The boys we brought in this year, Dyson Stevens, Will Krithararis and Paul Bower, just seeing their excitement in the build-up to grand final week and the nerves on them, it’s what you play footy for.” Lance Jenkinson
