Cool critters in spotlight Every dog will have its day, every cat will have its way and every bird will be heard during Wyndham council’s Pet and Animal Expo this weekend. Ally Gatt and canine companion Hunter are looking forward to the free event, which will be held on Sunday from 10am to 3pm in the grounds of the Wyndham Civic Centre. The Cat Hub will feature exotic breeds and the Dog Arena will come to life with agility and obedience demonstrations, a working dog show and aerial displays from the Flipping Disc Dogz. Native wildlife will also be in the spotlight, thanks to The Rookeepers Wildlife Show and a birds of prey display. Attendees will be able to chat to Wyndham council’s animal management team and book in for microchipping with the Lost Dogs Home. Snake warning for pets By Alesha Capone A snake catcher has warned pet owners to take care as spring begins, after three dogs were bitten by tiger snakes in Wyndham last week. Stewart Gatt, aka Stewy the Snake Catcher, said the incidents occurred between September 1 and 3. “On all three occasions, the dogs have attacked the snake first and the snakes have retaliated in the only way they can, and that is to bite,” Mr Gatt said. He said he was called out to one of the cases,

in which a Staffordshire bull terrier found a snake in its owner’s yard at a house near the Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club. Mr Gatt said he found out about the other two incidents, which occurred near Skeleton Creek, through a vet and a contact in the industry. “September is always busy because the snakes are just starting to wake up, looking for a mate and to find food,” he said. “At the moment, we’re averaging four to five calls a day.” Mr Gatt said he received a lot of calls from

new estates in areas such as Point Cook, Wyndham Vale and Tarneit. “If you see a snake, it’s illegal to kill it – they are a protected animal and a vital part of the ecosystem,” Mr Gatt said. Veterinarian Dr Karen Davies, from Direct Vet Services in Point Cook, said in the first three days of this month she had treated two dogs bitten by snakes. Dr Davies said one of the dogs had recovered but another, who had initially recovered, was brought back into the practice by her owners after her condition deteriorated a few days later.

Dr Davies said she remained hopeful the dog would recover. She said pets such as cats and rabbits were also in danger of snake bites and it was important for pet owners who thought their animals had been bitten by a snake to take them to a vet as early as possible. Dr Davies said to discourage snakes residents should keep gardens clean and tidy, with items off the ground and remove water sources. A Wyndham council spokesman said the council had not received any recent reports of snake bites.

Police in carjack crackdown By Alesha Capone Brimbank is the state’s top spot for carjackings, according to figures from the Crime Statistics Agency. CSA data supplied to Star Weekly shows there was a total of 200 carjackings reported to Victoria Police between April last year and March this year – 48 of those were recorded in Melbourne’s west. There were 18 carjackings in Brimbank, including three in St Albans and three in Sunshine North for the 12 month period.

Casey, in the city’s south-east, recorded 16 carjackings for the same time frame, followed by Greater Dandenong and Hume, which both had 12. Melton was fifth-highest in the state with 11 carjackings, including five in the Melton township itself. Elsewhere in the west, there were seven carjackings in Hobsons Bay, and six each in Wyndham and Maribyrnong. Brimbank’s Acting Police Inspector Helen Chugg said that “unfortunately” Brimbank was among the areas that had seen an increase in carjackings in recent years.

“We understand there is community concern about these crimes,” she said. “While this type of crime is high profile and has high community concern, thankfully it is rare. “Carjackings often involve cross-regional offending, meaning offenders may reside in one area, steal a car on the other side of town and then commit further offences in another area. “To tackle this, our detectives work together at a cross-regional level, sharing intelligence and linking offences to inform our operational response to solve the crimes.”

Inspector Chugg said Taskforce Wayward, a police operation which began in March last year in response to “high harm offences” in the west, had led to 197 people being arrested. She said another operation, Operation Regnant, resulted in more than 650 arrests. “Local police complement these taskforces with highly visible proactive patrols aimed at disruption and prevention,” she said. “We are cracking down on people wanted on warrants, ensuring offenders are complying with their strict bail conditions, and managing persons of interest.”

Council shuts the gate on bad behaviour

A cookbook being created by Tarneit Central to celebrate the delicious and multicultural foods of Wyndham is set to be a delicious read. The centre is putting together the book, titled Lovely Tastes of Tarneit, as a way to bring the community together through recipe sharing. Tarneit Central has invited residents to submit their family’s favourite recipes for the book, with entries open online until 5pm on Friday, September 21. More than 40 recipes will be selected to feature in the book, which will be published as a hardcover edition near the end of the year. Wyndham council has resumed locking the carpark gates of the Yerambooee Community Centre, after receiving a complaint about antisocial behaviour at the Hoppers Crossing site. Council’s city life director Jenny McMahon, said the gates of the centre’s carpark had been locked each night until recently. She said that after receiving a complaint about anti-social behaviour from a concerned resident, the council had taken action. “In light of the concerns raised, council has resumed locking the gates … security patrols of the area have never stopped and will continue to be provided,” Ms McMahon said. “Council is always concerned to hear of situations where residents have reported feeling unsafe and we take these reports very seriously. “Council is committed to working with the community to improve public safety and in this instance we believe the best outcome has been achieved. “We will continue to monitor the situation at Yerambooee Community Centre to ensure the issues that have been raised are resolved as quickly and comprehensively as possible.” Star Weekly understands the antisocial behaviour included youths accessing the Maple Street centre during the evening to climb onto its roof, have parties and litter the playground with condoms. e all know there is a state government election looming and we are all viewing all parties with a degree of suspicion whenever they open their mouths promising yet another multi-million dollar hand out, and rightly so. If ever there was a time to buy votes, it is most certainly in the next few months. There is one initiative on at the moment that is being run by the state government that I feel deserves a mention because it is a big picture item, not an immediate vote-grabbing exercise. The Pick My Project campaign is a beauty and has captured the imagination of local communities, especially here in Wyndham. There are 30 organisations in Wyndham vying for the grants, ranging from about $20,000 to $200,000. The range of projects is diverse and interesting. Everything is covered, from waste management, a local maps app and a mural on the iconic Werribee water tower to an inter-cultural tea and coffee festival. There is a proposed folk fest, plans to introduce lawn bowls more widely and also plans to bring

digital technology to the elderly. Werribee Football Club wants to upgrade its scoreboard, Wyndham BMX is looking to make over its score shed, all weather seating is being sought at the Hoppers Lane athletics facility and the Wyndham Community Boxing Club wants to introduce organised boxing to troubled teens. All 30 projects are worthy of funding, but who gets the slice of state government money is decided for the most part by the amount of online votes it attracts. There are very strict rules regarding the voting which is good, but the way it has people talking about positive change to the area and engaging residents in projects in their own backyard is excellent. The exposure to the public for all these 30 projects is brilliant. Would I have known about the musical therapy for special needs children, the lantern festival of light, or the body positive hiking for culturally diverse and refugee women without this initiative? Fair to say no. It is a great idea. Well done to whoever thought of it. I hope it continues regardless of who wins the state election in November. â–

Property damage arrests

Police have arrested an 18-year-old man from Tarneit and an 18-year-old man from Truganina in relation to property damage that occurred at a house in Ferguson Street, Williamstown on Sunday, September 2. The men were interviewed by police and were released pending further inquiries.

Home invasion charges

Police have charged a teenager following an aggravated home invasion in Habitat Court, Tarneit, on August 17. Detectives executed a search warrant at a Tarneit house last Wednesday and arrested a 17-year-old boy, who was charged with aggravated home invasion, theft of a motor vehicle, theft, possessing proceeds of crime and trafficking a drug of dependence. An 18-year-old Werribee man and another 17-year-old Tarneit male were arrested, but released pending further inquiries. Toddler hit-run, charges laid

Platypuses killed in net Seven platypuses have been found dead inside an illegal trap in the Werribee River. The animals, from a local population of less than 50, were pulled from the water on Saturday in an illegally set net, which was tied to a tree near the Davis Creek junction. The incident has sparked an investigation by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning. “This is devastating news and we are shocked that one net in one week can make such an impact on an iconic animal,” department wildlife officer Abby Smith said. “The Werribee River is home to a vulnerable

and very small population of platypuses and it’s a thrill to even see one in its natural habitat.” Ms Smith said the net was tied to a small tree opposite 92 Riversdale Drive where the Werribee River and Davis Creek meet. “The net was found by a local teenager who said the net was not there the week before and reported it to the authorities,” Ms Smith said. In July, Victoria banned opera house yabby nets, which authorities believed were responsible for killing hundreds of platypuses each year. “We don’t think the person responsible intended to catch platypus,” Ms Smith said, but

it showed a “complete lack of understanding” of the destruction such a net can cause. “Usually, illegal nets such as opera house nets and folding frame nets are encountered, but this time the net was a spring loaded collapsible cylindrical bait trap,” she said. Senior wildlife ecologist Josh Griffiths said the Werribee River has a platypus population of less than 50. A learner driver has been charged with a hit-run at Laverton that left a toddler fighting for life on Sunday night. Two-year-old Damon Michell had ran out on to Railway Avenue when the incident occurred just before 9pm. His mother’s cousin, Katie Moran, said Damon had just celebrated his second birthday on Father’s Day, September 2. “He is a beautiful little boy,” she said. “He is affectionate, cheeky, always wanting to help and loves his baby sister and his older brothers and sister.” It’s understood that while Damon is no longer critical, he remains in intensive care in The Royal Children’s Hospital in an induced coma. A fundraising page has been set up by relatives to help with medical costs. Police say the driver of a Holden station wagon travelling east-bound allegedly didn’t stop after hitting the boy. Police later found the car abandoned at an Altona Meadows shopping centre. A 21-year-old man was arrested at a home on Railway Avenue in Laverton. He has been charged with failing to stop, failing to render assistance and being a learner driver unaccompanied by a full licence holder. He was released on bail to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday. Sisters save the day By Alesha Capone

As your Mayor, it’s my job to fight for more services and investment for Wyndham – but this means I’m often focusing on what we’re missing out on, rather than what we have. Today, I’m using this column to acknowledge one or two things we should be optimistic about. Victoria’s economy is outperforming the rest of the country and growth areas like Wyndham are playing no small part. The opening of Target’s headquarters in Williams Landing shows we’re an attractive place to invest. Ours is a dynamic young community destined to be an economic powerhouse for decades to come. Now… anyone who has visited less prosperous parts of the world will have witnessed how poor infrastructure stymies economic growth and undermines living standards. Here in Victoria, we have the good fortune of a State Government spending record amounts on infrastructure. Visionary projects like the Suburban Rail Loop and the West Gate Tunnel will directly benefit the West and help propel our economy to even greater heights. Locally, the $1.8billion Western Roads Upgrade Package will unclog many of Wyndham’s busiest roads. So today, I invite you to join me in focusing on what we can look forward to – because out here in the west, our future looks bright. Regards, Peter Maynard

Sisters Fatima Tawil and Rayanne Elhouli have been recognised with a special award from St John Ambulance Victoria. The sisters, who both work in administration at Al-Taqwa College in Truganina, were presented with the award at a ceremony held in Melbourne on Friday. Mrs Tawil and Mrs Elhouli won the “schools” section of the St John awards, which aim to honour unsung heroes who have made a lasting impact on someone’s life by using their first aid knowledge. The sisters were nominated for the award after they helped a grade 4 boy with epilepsy, who had accidentally collided with another pupil and hit his head on a wall during a recess break last month. Mrs Tawil said she was walking along when she saw the boy, who had fallen onto the floor. “I helped him get into the recovery position and was just checking that he was responsive,” she said. Mrs Tawil said she asked a nearby pupil to fetch her sister, who called the school nurse. Mrs Tawil said luckily the boy fully recovered from his accident. She said she was “shocked” to receive the St John award, while Mrs Elhouli said it was “amazing”. Mrs Elhouli said both she and her sister completed their first aid training through Al-Taqwa College on an annual basis. “It is so important for everyone to have that first aid training,” she said. “For example, if you’re on a train and see something happen, you will be in a position to help out someone.” The sisters said they would display their St John award at the college.

Tree protection takes root By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has introduced a Significant Tree Register to help protect historic trees in the municipality. At a meeting last week, the council voted to amend its planning scheme so that anyone wanting to remove, damage or lop a registered tree would need to apply for a planning permit. A council report noted that while a planning permit would not always prevent someone from removing a historic tree, having a Significant

Tree Register would give the council “greater control in the decision-making process”. Forty trees and groups of trees on public land have been included in the register, including 13 river red gums and 10 pepper trees. Last year, residents were invited to nominate trees for potential inclusion on the register. A historian and arborist conducted an assessment of the 120 trees nominated, to decide which ones would be listed on the register. The report stated the register would initially

focus on trees on public realm, and that once the register became operational, the council would review options for including trees on private land. The report also stated council officers would “ensure” the governor’s gum on the Princes Highway, which was planted in 1928 by the Governor of Victoria, and the Von Mueller trees in Chirnside Park (planted by the family of the botanist instrumental in establishing the city’s botanic gardens) were included in a second round of nominations for the register.

During the council meeting, Cr Mia Shaw said she was disappointed that the Calder Memorial trees had not been included in the register. The trees, which are on the Geelong Road/ Princes Highway road reserve in Werribee, are believed to have been planted during the 1920s as part of the Calder Memorial Avenue, in memory of William Calder, the first chairman of the Country Roads Board. Something wicked A special production of Macbeth will be performed by students from Manor Lakes College later this month. The school has teamed up with Western Edge Youth Arts to stage the show on Wednesday, September 19 and Thursday, September 20. Western Edge Youth Arts is running an after-school program at Manor Lakes College, in which 30 participants from years 7 to 10 have been studying Macbeth through dance, physical theatre and film, in the lead-up to the performances. The show has been described as ““Macbeth like you’ve never seen it” and an “original re-imagining” of Shakespeare’s timeless classic, set in a dystopian world. In the production, Macbeth works for Warlord Duncan, keeping the peasants in line. Witches tell Macbeth that he can become the king, but whether he has the courage to seize his chance is something which only audiences will find out.

Macbeth will start at 7pm and be held at Amadeus Hall, Manor Lakes College, 2-50 Minindee Road, Wyndham Vale. ‘Leaked’ carpark code anger By Alesha Capone A father has called for Wyndham council to take action on what he describes as “atrocious parking behavior” occurring at Tarneit Central Kindergarten. Jason van der Paal said he believed the gate codes for the carpark, which is only meant for use by kindergarten families and staff, had been “leaked”, resulting in many people, including families whose students attended a nearby school, using the carpark and

preventing kindergarten parents from using it. “It has become dangerous to pick up kids in that carpark now,” Mr van der Paal said. “People simply block the road inside and outside that carpark. “The atrocious lack of enforcement of the reserved parking area for the kindergarten has gotten to the point where it has become unsafe to take small children through the area because of gridlocked traffic, illegal parking and dangerous driving.”

Wyndham city life director Jenny McMahon said that while the council was not the operator of the kindergarten, it “worked closely” with the operator. “The kindergarten carpark is congested at times – this kindergarten is in high demand with 320 children currently enrolled at the facility,” she said. “There have been a handful of small issues with families getting frustrated, around pick-up and drop-off times, with congestion and the inability to find a parking spot. Council has requested that the

Ron’s a bloody legend Seventy-eight Wyndham residents, including Hoppers Crossing man Ron Carr, have been recognised as milestone blood donors. Mr Carr has made more than 325 blood donations to the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, since he first started donating blood during the 1960s. He regularly makes donations at the Werribee Donor Centre in Bridge Street. “I feel as good as gold after giving blood and I would say to anyone that has considered donating blood, just do it,” Mr Carr said. “It is such a good thing to do for the community.” Last week, during National Blood Donor Week, Mr Carr and 77 other milestone donors – people who have donated blood 50 times or more – from Wyndham were recognised at a special ceremony.

Collectively, the blood from the 78 Wyndham donors has helped to save the lives of almost 30,000 Australians. Blood Service spokeswoman Stephanie Reynolds thanked all of Wyndham’s blood donors. “In the Wyndham region, 4405 donors gave 12,804 blood donations in the past 12 months, which is an outstanding effort,” she said. Ms Reynolds said although these figures were impressive, donated blood only lasted 42 days, meaning new donations were always needed. “It takes just an hour of your time to donate blood and become a bloody legend, and every donation helps save three lives,” she said. Councillors take leave Seven Wyndham councillors have been granted approval to take leave before the year ends. The approvals effectively mean that between them, the seven councillors will be absent from any council-related meetings or duties for a collective total of more than 90 days. At last week’s council meeting, the council granted leave of absence to mayor Peter Maynard and councillors Kim McAliney,

Walter Villagonzalo, Mia Shaw, Tony Hooper, Heather Marcus and Josh Gilligan. The individual periods concerned run collectively from August through to late November. Cr Hooper has announced he will be standing as an independent candidate for the seat of Altona in the Victorian state election, which will be held on Saturday, November 24. He will be on leave from October 30 to November 25. During a council meeting in August,

Cr Gilligan lost a bid to postpone this year’s November 21 mayoral election so that councillors contesting the state election could participate in the council poll. Cr Gilligan proposed moving the mayoral election to Wednesday, November 28, to ensure that councillors running in the state election would be available to attend. But Cr Gilligan’s notice of motion was voted down, with his fellow councillors saying the council should not change meeting dates to accommodate outside interests.

Old fashion products such as powders, collars and shampoos are quite ineffective and are not recommended for allergic pets. Spring can also be the time pets suffer from a heavy burden of intestinal worms. Signs include weight loss, diarrhoea and sometimes blood in the poo. Puppies and kittens should be wormed every few weeks while adult pets should be treated at least every three months for their exact body weight. Dogs are also recommended to be protected from heartworm disease, which can be easily done by a once a year injection with your vet at vaccination time. So to do the best by your pets, ensure year round, regular parasite control for every member of the household.

A man who has slammed Wyndham council for failing its “duty of care” towards his elderly parents was escorted out of the council chambers during his protest. Charlie Buttigieg says his parents were not informed before access to their property was blocked during concreting works last month. He was escorted out of last week’s meeting by a security guard, after asking why his parents were not informed before the works started in front of their Hoppers Crossing property on August 25. Mr Buttigieg was ushered out of the meeting, after he continued to talk while the council’s director of city operations Stephen Thorpe was answering questions about the issue. Mr Buttigieg said his parents, who are aged in their 80s, only became aware of the concrete works when they heard trucks out the front of their house, about 8.30-9am on August 25. Mr Buttigieg said he approached the site supervisor, who apologised and said a worker had been instructed to try and contact his parents “all day” on August 24 to let them know of the works, and that a letter had also been dropped off at the house. But Mr Buttigieg said neither his parents or his sister, who was at the house, heard from a worker nor received a letter. Mr Buttigieg said he was worried an ambulance would not have been able to access his parents’ property during the concreting works and the council had not acknowledged their “duty of care towards the community” especially “a frail, elderly couple”. “I am extremely, extremely, extremely, disappointed with this council,” he said. Happy, healthy cuppa Women’s Health Week has been celebrated by the team at Women’s Health Hub in Werribee with a cheerful morning tea and happy conversations. The medical centre held the event for patients and the hub’s team of GPs. It is estimated more than 87,000 Australian women took part in more than 2000 events during this year’s edition of Women’s Health Week.

Two large land developers have submitted proposals to Werribee Shire Council for “rural residential” subdivisions on the fringe of Werribee. One application is for a 200 one-hectare (2.5 acres) subdivision and the other is for an average of 2.3 hectares (6 acres) with a combined total of 450 blocks.

A Werribee Council report has suggested that local government grants to the Laverton TRY Youth centre be withdrawn. The report, from the council’s health and community services director Mr Bernard O’Neill, recommends that the council take control of the delivery of all youth services in the municipality.

Werribee Residents Against Toxic Dump (WRATD) has declared last Friday’s last-minute rally at the CSR site in Wests Road a success. Several hundred protestors showed their opposition to the company’s plans to build a prescribed waste facility after CSR’s manager for recycling and waste management Mr Robert Reid said CSR staff would meet the State Government’s standing committee on conservation and the environment at the site.

Police used capsicum spray and called for reinforcements when a brawl broke out after the final siren in the Western Region Football League first division grand final at Chirnside Park on Saturday. FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? WM: I do cook quite a lot. It’s much like my cricket career … me in the kitchen, it’s how it comes out of the hand. I think I have developed a dish which would allow me to boast of my culinary creativity. I made a dim sim pizza. I should patent it. It was one of those great moments when you go “What’s in the fridge?” I will just whip something up. I looked in the freezer and there was a pizza base and there were about half a dozen Marathon dimmies left, and I thought “Why not?” I whacked on some mozzarella, pizza sauce, a bit of chilli and a bit of ginger and I cooked it up. I said to my son “Come and test this out.” He said “What is it ?” I said “A dim sim pizza.” He said “Dad, you are a genius”. He was a little bit wary of it but he gave it the thumbs up. FB: Tell us about your dad’s cooking when you were growing up. WM: When mum would go away for a weekend or interstate, dad would cook and that was Russian roulette. He wouldn’t touch Spam but he would go Camp Pie. He said it was the food that won the war. Or he’d do his toasties with Irish stew (from a can) and a slice of cheese. He’d always say about the Irish stew: “Deeply suspicious but highly delicious.” FB: What other food memories do you have from growing up? WM: I remember going on a cadet camp in high school and we were overjoyed to be given Tom Piper sausages and vegetables. Rice a Riso … where did that go? It sounds like an awful lip sync band from the ’80s but it tasted all right to me. My mother said “It’s Chinese” and I thought wow, how great. FB: What is your favourite food? WM: I am just mad for Italian and I love Japanese. I (also) went on a bit of a Greek binge. I had a black miso recently and it deserved a cheer squad. FB: What are your favourite local eateries? WM: Luxsmith in Seddon. We went recently and had a great meal at the Copper Pot in Seddon. There are so many restaurants and little bars that have popped up. We are just spoilt for choice. FB: Do you have a sweet tooth? WM: No, I have never been big on dessert. I love cheese I am a cheese freak. I love dauphinoise. That cheese is to die for. I love a good quince paste to go with it and a few muscatels. You can see I am a total ponce. I don’t mind a pav though, so if I am going to have a dessert, give me a straight old fashioned pav with some passionfruit on top. FB: What is your favourite drink? WM: I do like beer. I love Vic (Bitter). It’s good. I have also been known to buy the odd carton of XXXX, which stuns some people, but that’s what I grew up with. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? WM: Ian Chappell, John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Dean Martin and my dad. HOME MADE BOUNTY BARS

4 cups desiccated coconut (you may need more) 1 can condensed milk (I used coconut condensed milk) 200g or more Belgian dark and milk chocolate (I used half and half) 2 teaspoons coconut oil Mix first two ingredients together and roll into balls or logs (I found logs easier) Place on baking paper and freeze (I found overnight was best). Melt chocolate and oil, either over double boiler or in microwave. Dip logs into chocolate. I found using a fork was easier as it’s messy. Place back on baking paper and back into freezer. Ready in half an hour. Enjoy!

SPORT Duffin breaks through for historic win

In a VFL women’s season in which Williamstown only won four games, Jess Duffin shone like a beacon. A star recruit for the Seagulls in their inaugural season, Duffin did the unthinkable on Monday night and took out the Lambert-Pearce Medal for best-and-fairest player in the league. Duffin is a special footballer and a special sportswoman. She has been a superstar with the Australian cricket team and a star in the AFLW with Collingwood, the team that drafted her, and now North Melbourne, who she moved to in the off season trade period. Duffin, from Werribee, did not just scoop the Lambert-Pearce Medal, she did it in a canter. She finished on 23 votes, a massive six ahead of second-placed Lauren Pearce (17), of the Darebin Falcons. In accepting the award, Duffin put the secret to her success down to sheer hard work. “I’m really shocked, but happy to be standing up here,” she said.

“You don’t want any personal accolades, you’re more about the team, but when something like this comes up, I’m quite proud of where I’ve come from.” Still juggling football and cricket, Duffin thanked her clubs for giving her the freedom to move between sports and excel at both. “Sometimes it isn’t easy,” she said of juggling two sports. “Not only Cricket Australia, but the football clubs I’ve been at, Collingwood and now North Melbourne, have been really helpful in allowing me to do that.” If the medal was not enough, Duffin was also honoured with captaincy of the VFLW team of the year. Duffin is busy preparing for next season’s AFLW competition with expansion team North Melbourne. “Getting around a new group and shaping a new club, I’m really looking forward to it.” Lance Jenkinson

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The achievement of the Deer Park Football Club to make its sixth straight division one grand final is remarkable and testament predominately to three men – president Mark McGoldrick, senior coach Marc Bullen and benefactor Glenn Allison. There are people like Jamie Madigan, Luke Summers, Mark Lanham and many others who have made ongoing contributions and enjoyed the success every bit as much as any of the players. Chris Stewart and Kwame McHarg are the survivors of the past five and will etch their names even deeper into the history of the competition if they win a sixth premiership medal. Good luck to them. ■ At the other end of the premiership success scale is the Point Cook Centrals Football Club, which will be in the division three grand finals this weekend in reserves and seniors. Pretty impressive for a club on the brink of closure little more than a year ago. The club’s under 13s won the flag and Tarkyn Findlay took out the competition best and fairest award. Like all clubs, Centrals has relied on many volunteers and locals to get to this point and Saturday at Avalon Airport Oval will be the biggest day in the club’s short history when it takes on Wyndham Suns. ■ The division two grand final will be a beauty, with the two best sides of the season – Point Cook and Yarraville Seddon – lining up to see who makes the jump in 2019. The Eagles and the Bulldogs finished top two in seniors and reserves and both clubs will be hoping for a super successful day at Avalon Airport Oval. The Bulldogs inaugural season has been a huge plus for the club and whatever happens Sunday, president Ivo Havard, his committee and senior coach Ian Denny, can be pleased with their efforts.

Tigers in land of dreams By Lance Jenkinson It all goes on the line for Werribee in the Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 2 this Sunday. At stake is the holy grail, a premiership. History is against the Tigers, who haven’t won a senior men’s premiership since 1993, but there’s a sense this team is one that is hellbent on defying the odds and writing its own history. The tougher the task the better for this focused group. As the lowest ranked team in the finals, the Tigers have been the underdogs throughout September, but that has not stopped them. The Tigers ended MHSOB’s season in a cut-throat semi-final and eliminated St Bede’s in a 2-1 preliminary final win on Sunday. Standing in the way of Werribee and that elusive premiership is Bayside. Bayside is the minor premier and favourite going into the season decider at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Sunday. But Bayside can be beaten and is statistically on par with Werribee.

The Tigers crushed Bayside 4-1 last time the sides met. Their goal difference was almost identical in the home-and-away rounds, with Werribee’s slightly better at +56 and Bayside’s at +51. Werribee scored 76 goals and conceded 20, while Bayside scored 73 and gave up 22. This final of two well-matched teams gives Werribee plenty of reason to dream. Tigers defender Ross Cowlishaw shares the optimism. “As long as we come in switched on and bring our top game, we’ll be a chance,” he said. “If we all come prepared and bring our game, we’re fairly confident.” Werribee has been building up to this moment for three months. The Tigers’ form has been white hot, including winning six games in a row. Since round eight, the Tigers have won 11, drawn one and lost one. Over that span, Werribee has displayed a ruthless attack – not just beating teams, but pummelling them into submission.

The best part of Sunday’s victory over St Bede’s was that Werribee had to find a different way to win. The Tigers were not afforded the lion’s share of possession they had been used to in the previous weeks. Defenders Cowlishaw, Ryan Buust, Jayden Street and Andrew Dearnley and goalkeeper Aaron Durajski kept St Bede’s at bay for the most part to ensure the Tigers got through to the grand final. “We attacked early, scoring our two goals in the first half,” Cowlishaw said. “It was probably our defence that got the job done in the end. The defence held up strongly.” Goals from Matthew Skoglund, who pounced to mop up a rebound off a short corner, and Peter Nalder, who scored from open play, were enough to send Werribee to the big dance. If the Tigers can beat Bayside in Sunday’s decider, they will be promoted to Vic League 1. “Winning a premiership is what you want, but getting promotion is the icing on the cake,” Cowlishaw said. “It would be good for the younger blokes coming up.”

Point Cook’s decision to switch pays dividends Making the transition from one football league to another is never easy. There will always be detractors from the league you are leaving, the league you are joining and inside your own club. The best way to validate the move is to have immediate success in the competition you join and Point Cook has done that in the Western Region Football League division 2. The Bulldogs reached the grand final in their inaugural season after coasting to an 83-point win over Parkside in the preliminary final at the Whitten Oval on Saturday. “It’s pretty exciting for the people who had a bit of a vision in the middle of last year and decided to make the move,” Point Cook coach Ian Denny said. “Our nucleus was Point Cook guys and the guys we got back were Point Cook guys, but to put the team together in the first year and to get the firsts and seconds into the grand final,

it’s a tremendous effort and everyone is really happy.” Point Cook was clearly one of the two standout teams in the competition this season. The other being minor premiers Yarraville Seddon Eagles, who they will meet in the grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. The Bulldogs go into the game as the outsiders, having lost to the Eagles twice with one match abandoned after an umpire fell ill. But Denny has seen enough in those encounters to believe his team is a genuine chance. “We’ve had them under pressure,” Denny said. “If we can sustain the pressure, they might find themselves in some unfamiliar territory. “I said to the players all along, we only have to beat them once and now is our chance.” The Point Cook win was a sustained four-quarter effort. The Bulldogs were ruthless, compiling 33

scoring shots to Parkside’s 10 and producing six goals in the fourth. “We’ve just got to make sure we bring the pressure again in the grand final this week and sustain it like we did today,” Denny said. Parkside could only manage three goals – easily its lowest output for the season. Kirk Heberle kicked six goals for Point Cook. He even wasted a number of other opportunities before he was put on ice. “He kicked our first five goals and we rested him off in the last quarter,” Denny said. “He was just unstoppable.” The height and strength of Andrew Robinson and Wayde Skipper was pivotal for Point Cook. Matthew Poland kept “hunting” the ball in the midfield, while Leslie Butler racked up possessions at will across half-back and rising star Alex Grigg was superb on the wing. Lance Jenkinson

Suns gunning for history By Lance Jenkinson It will be a history-making day in the Western Region Football League this Saturday. Recent expansion clubs Wyndham Suns and minor premiers Point Cook Centrals will be gunning for their first senior flags when they meet in the division 3 grand final at Avalon Airport Oval. Suns coach Michael Boothey said it was a motivating factor for the players ahead of the big day. “We can create history for the club,” he said. “If we can win, these players will go down as being part of the first senior premiership for the club. “Point Cook Centrals would be the same as well, so both clubs have a fair bit of history riding on this.” Wyndham advanced to the grand final on the back of a remarkable 27-point win over Tarneit in the preliminary final at Pennell Reserve on Sunday. The Suns trailed at three-quarter time by four points and began the last quarter a man down after a yellow card was issued to star forward Steven Neralic, but they proceeded to kick the last five goals of the game – two coming while they were a man down – to storm to victory. “We knew it was going to be a close game, but it was too close,” Boothey said. “I’m glad it finished the way it did because I don’t think I could’ve handled the nerves much longer. “We were a player short for the first 10 minutes of the last quarter, so we were sort of looking down the barrel a bit. “The boys seemed to lift when the chips are down and we’re up against it.” It is that never-say-die attitude that Boothey loves about his Wyndham team. It was the second time in as many weeks that the Suns have had to play a man short in a cut-throat final and delivered the goods. “The same thing happened last week,” Boothey said. “We were a player short in the third quarter and came out and kicked five goals against Braybrook in the semis. “The boys certainly find something when they have to, which is a characteristic that you want in the side. “It must be in the mindset of knowing they need to work harder. “It’s almost like, I’ve got to roll up, I’ve got to get to that contest, I’ve got to run harder. “It’s a really strange thing, but it’s good that the players are able to lift and do that.” Wyndham will need all hands on deck to overcome Point Cook Centrals. strong rivalry with since their arrival in senior football in 2015. Three of the Suns stars – spearhead Neralic, DeBono and Ryan Barnwell – are former Point Cook Centrals players. DeBono and Barnwell were former captains of the Sharks. “There are a lot of guys in division 3 who

have moved around the clubs,” Boothey said. “There’s three players off the top of my head who have played at Sanctuary Lakes. “That makes it a bit more interesting.” Point Cook Centrals have been in the senior competition since 2013, when they entered as the Sanctuary Lakes Sharks before changing their name in the off season.

Star Jets ready for action on the big stage The season is far from over for Western Jets bottom-age stars Emerson Jeka and Darcy Cassar. While the Jets crashed out of the TAC Cup finals with a 120-point loss to Oakleigh Chargers on Sunday, Jeka and Cassar will continue training in preparation for the AFL All Stars Futures match. The game will pit the top 48 under 17 players from across the country in an all star game to be played at the MCG as a curtain-raiser to the 2018 AFL grand final. The players have been divided into two teams of 24, with half playing for Team Riewoldt, named in honour of former St Kilda champion Nick Riewoldt, and the other half playing for Team Bartel, named in honour of Brownlow Medal winner Jimmy Bartel. Selection in this game is a huge indication of a players potential heading into their top age season. “It’s a big thing,” Jets coach Torin Baker said. “It shows that they’re highly thought of by the talent staff that select the game and obviously it reflects on the year that they’ve had. “If you can perform there, you’re putting yourself into good stead going into draft year.” Jeka is a developing key forward. The Altona product has proven his worth at an elite level in the AFL Academy squad. “He’s had some good form when he’s played at academy level,” Baker said. “It’s his ability to get separation from his opponent as a leading forward that is without doubt his best trait. “He’s really sure with his hands and is a very nice kick. “He moves well for a 196-centimetre player, so there’s a lot of talent there.” Cassar, a Keilor product, will be a teammate of Jeka’s on the Team Bartel squad. Cassar has thrived in a variety of roles for the Jets, including high forward, on the wing or even on the ball. “He’s got versatility to play in a number of spots and he’s athletically really strong,” Baker said. “He’s someone that is always involved in games. “He’s had a good year, played every game for us, and he played at the under 16s national championships last year.” The game will be streamed live on the AFL website from 10am on September 29. Reds exit firing and pumped up for a quick return Hoppers Crossing has gone down swinging in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1. The Reds have been relegated, but they claimed a couple of major scalps on the way out. They backed up from their upset win over fourth-placed finisher Keilor Park in the penultimate round of the season with a memorable 1-0 triumph over powerhouse Preston Lions on the road at BT Connor Reserve on Saturday. Reds coach Shaun Barbara was proud of the way his players fought out the season, even when it was known they would be relegated. “We were relegated three weeks ago basically and could’ve went into the last couple of games with a carefree attitude,” he said. “But we spoke to the boys during the week and made sure that everything we were doing was geared towards leaving a mark on the league, which was to knock off Preston, which not many teams have done, and obviously

Keilor Park, and do our best to start putting things in place for next year. “Yeah, some people will say it’s too late … but for me, it’s a nice way to end the year and something the boys deserved.” Hoppers Crossing rode its luck against Preston, hemmed back for long periods of the play. Goalkeeper Kieron Sharratt was forced into making a number of tough saves, while the crossbar came to the rescue on two occasions. But Hoppers Crossing was not without its own chances. The Reds broke the deadlock in the 78th minute when a Sharratt long ball found its way to Hope Mirindi, who smartly guided the ball to Simon Tolli. Tolli relished the service, pouncing on the edge of the penalty box and firing a bullet of a shot into the back of the net to secure an unforgettable win. It was a steep learning curve for Hoppers Crossing in the top-tier state league this season.

The Reds missed out on survival by just two points, but will be better prepared for the next time they are in the same league. “There is a big jump from state 2 to state 1,” Barbara said. “We knew it was going to be tough, but how tough it was is exactly

what we didn’t know. We went in with a similar squad to what we had last year and wanted to put faith in the players that got us there. “The first half of the year is always difficult when they’re trying to adjust … coming up against a new group of teams and a different level of players in terms of their technical ability. “To be fair, the second half of the year, I think a lot of those players put on a really good performance.” Hoppers Crossing will keep its faith in Barbara after coming to a handshake agreement for him to continue on next season. Barbara wants the Reds’ stay in state league 2 to be a brief one. “For me, the focus turns to getting a good preparation and making sure we can get back up to state league 1 again,” he said. Warriors survive a scare By Lance Jenkinson Hoppers Crossing has no intention of dwelling on what went wrong in its thrilling three-point win over Spotswood in the Western Region Football League division 1 first-semi final at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. The Warriors have no time to look into the rear-view mirror and dissect how they almost let a 30-point lead slip in the final quarter because they want to lap up their achievement of reaching the preliminary final – a feat that would have been considered against the odds before the season. For Warriors coach Steven Kretiuk and his players, the manner in which they got there is immaterial. “There’s no use talking about what-ifs and what went wrong or right – we’ve made a prelim and we start again,” Kretiuk said. He admitted his side was lucky to have had a bit of a buffer going into the last quarter against fast-finishing Spotswood. Kretiuk wants his young team’s achievements so far to be celebrated. There would not be too many hands go up if the punters were asked, in their pre-season predictions, if they were tipping the Warriors to make a preliminary final. Even Kretiuk thought it would be a stretch. “If we said at the start of the year … that we’d make the prelim, I would’ve laughed at you,” he said. “Especially with some of the recruits that some of the opposition got into their squads. “A few of our older guys went and we wanted to give some of our younger guys an opportunity. We thought it might cost us in the short term, but they’ve really stepped up.” The Warriors will meet Altona in the preliminary final at Burbank Oval on Saturday. The Vikings have all the expectations on them as minor premiers, while Hoppers Crossing can thrive in the underdog role. A lack of external pressure is what makes Hoppers Crossing such a dangerous proposition in the preliminary final. “We’ve got nothing to lose,” Kretiuk said. “We’ll throw everything at Altona, who are a fantastic side. They touched us up a few weeks ago, so we’re going to go bull-at-a-gate and see what happens.” The Warriors’ willingness to move on from their last 30 minutes against Spotswood is a good thing for their state of mind. Spotswood coach Anthony Eames reckons there were enough positives for the Warriors in their first three quarters for them to not be scarred by their final term. “I think they’ll take some positives out of those first three quarters next week if they are challenged by Altona,” Eames said. Still, there is learning to be had out of that horrible last quarter for Hoppers Crossing, in which it coughed up five goals to a side that had kicked just one in the opening three terms.

Kretiuk does not hide from the fact that his team got smashed in the clearances in that quarter – 12-3 was the count from their statistician – and it’s something they will not only need to look at during training this week. In a season that Hoppers Crossing has relied on youngsters to step up, it was fitting that rookie Lachie Grant would kick the crucial fourth-quarter goal against Spotswood. It makes Kretiuk proud when he sees a young player seize the moment. “We brought in one of our under-19s into the

side in Lachie Grant to play as a small forward, because we just missed that presence and awareness around the goals,” the coach said. “He ended up kicking the winning goal.” Braden Ferrari, Daniel Nielson and Jackson Viola were prominent in the win for Hoppers Crossing. If Hoppers Crossing can cause an upset over Altona it will return to the grand final for the first time since 2016 and go some way to easing the lingering pain of last year’s preliminary final exit at the hands of Sunshine.

Caroline Springs was out for vengeance after its semi-final shocker and got that with a 28-point win over Spotswood in the Western Region Football League senior women’s preliminary final at the Whitten Oval on Saturday. The Lakers were disappointed in a 60-point semi-final loss to Manor Lakes seven days earlier, but coach Anthea Stathakis felt it was important to move on quickly. “You can’t be dwelling on previous games, so all we were focusing on was the Spotswood game and what we had to do to get up there,” Stathakis said. “The girls had a really good game today. We’re over the moon to be in the grand final.” Caroline Springs came out with intent early in the game. The Lakers were up 20 to zip at quarter-time and extended their lead to 30 by half-time. The second half was more of an arm wrestle, but Stathakis decided to rest some players in preparation for their grand final against Manor Lakes. “Towards the end I did take off some of my players, especially my midfield, to rest them for next week,” she said. Alexandra Fato capped a starring role for Caroline Springs with two goals. Fato has stamped herself as one of the best midfielders in the competition. “Just the way she reads the play and gets the ball out of the midfield to our forward line is unbelievable,” Stathakis said. Carissa Whiley was superb in the ruck, Maddison-Eve Fenech was prolific in the midfield and Caitlin Pretty was the main target in attack, finishing with two goals. Teenager Taylah Kolevski had been a revelation for the Lakers this finals series. Caroline Springs will face Manor Lakes in the grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday at 5.15pm.
