The west on loop’s outer A $50 billion Suburban Rail Loop, promised by Labor if it reclaims government in the November state election, will take decades to have a significant impact on Wyndham. The government last week unveiled plans for a 90-kilometre underground rail track that would connect every major train line from Werribee to Cheltenham stations and provide a direct rail link to Melbourne Airport. But while the south-east section between the Frankston line and Box Hill has been identified as a “delivery priority”, the Sunshine to Werribee section will be “constructed in sections over a period of decades”, according to preliminary plans for the project. Furthermore, commuters in the west will be able to board loop trains only from Werribee or Sunshine. The government’s strategic assessment states that there is the potential for new stations in the west to be added, depending on design, but the government would not disclose what other stations are being considered for the west. Labor has committed to allocating $300 million for a full business case, design and pre-construction work if it wins the November state election, with work on the first section, in Melbourne’s south-east, expected to begin by the end of 2022. Construction of the project, which is expected to take 30 years to complete, will require funding from the federal government and the private sector. A government spokeswoman did not answer Star Weekly’s specific questions about what parts of the western section will be underground, whether or not
the project has the backing of the federal government, if there’s potential for the loop to connect with the Regional Rail Link and about property acquisitions. “Werribee locals will benefit from the Suburban Rail Loop, which will create a super hub at Sunshine connecting to new stations at Monash, La Trobe, Deakin and jobs precincts,” she said. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said that while the council welcomed the announcement, more needed to be done.

Rhonda rolls with latest award Hoppers Crossing’s Rhonda Edwards says she was bowled over to be named Wyndham’s Citizen of the Year last week. Mrs Edwards, a volunteer at the Werribee Bowls Club, was presented with the award on Friday. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said Mrs Edwards had “demonstrated tremendous passion for increasing community participation in lawn bowls”. Mrs Edwards, who was also presented with the Sports and Recreation Community Volunteer Award, said she was “very surprised and overwhelmed”. “I accepted it on behalf of everyone at the bowls club and all the volunteers at sports clubs in Wyndham,” she said. Storm asthma errors detailed A damning report shows that triple-0 operators made several errors that may have contributed to delays in getting help to some of the people who died in the 2016 thunderstorm asthma event. The Inspector-General for Emergency Management’s report into emergency services’ response during the thunderstorm asthma tragedy states that some operators did not advise callers there were long waits for ambulances, but were required to tell people that “the ambulance

Hope, 20, died in front of her family’s house as she and her relatives waited for an ambulance which arrived 30 minutes after it was called. The report states that triple-0 operators received an “unprecedented” 2666 calls in a 12-hour period during the thunderstorm asthma event in which eight people died. Between 3pm on November 21, 2016 and 6am the following day, the Emergency Services
Telecommunications Authority received 2666 requests for paramedics to assist with emergency and non-emergency cases, of which 962 were related to breathing problems. The report notes the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority has upgraded training for its operators. “We offer our condolences to the families and friends of the people who died as a result of the unprecedented thunderstorm asthma event,” the authority said in a statement. – with The Age

House prices hold steady
Big idea just the ticket for Oliver Altona North boy Oliver Nguyen has cooked up a generous way to help the Royal Children’s Hospital. Six-year-old Oliver has amassed an entire 30-piece set of Coles Little Shop Mini Collectables, which he is raffling to raise funds for the hospital. Oliver, whose parents own The Baker’s Son in Hoppers Crossing, is selling the raffle tickets for $5 each through the bakery. His mother, Huong Nguyen, said Oliver started out hoping to raise just $100, but the raffle had now raised “hundreds of dollars”.
“We’ve just had a really positive response from customers and everyone’s been really happy to support it,” she said. Mrs Nguyen said that the bakery’s customers had also contributed some Coles Mini items to the raffle – enough for Oliver to give away another set as a second prize. She said the Coles supermarket in Hoppers Crossing has donated a folder for the additional Minis. Oliver said the raffle winners would be drawn on Saturday, September 22, at the Baker’s Son.
Oliver has been a patient at the RCH’s emergency ward and his mother also spent a lot of time in the hospital as a child after she was diagnosed with a genetic disorder. “When mum said she had stayed at the hospital, I wanted to give thanks,” he said. Oliver, who is in prep at Sacred Heart Primary School in Newport, said he hoped to become an astronaut or ninja warrior when he grew up.
Although the housing market is slowing down, Wyndham is still experiencing “solid” activity due to interest from first-home buyers, according to a new report. The latest Price Predictor Index from hotspotting.com.au, a website run by real estate researcher and writer Terry Ryder, said the Melbourne property market had passed its peak but some suburbs were still experiencing “solid activity”. Mr Ryder said some areas of Wyndham were “still pretty active” for house sales. “First home buyer activity is quite active, the highest it has been in 60 years, and mostly on the fringes of Melbourne and Sydney,” he said. Mr Ryder said this was because these areas were affordable and state governments were providing stamp duty concessions for first-home buyers. He said in areas such as Wyndham Vale, Truganina, Tarneit and Point Cook “ …. the peak has passed but it is still a pretty strong and pretty solid market”. Mr Ryder said the Price Predictor Index found in the 12 months to May this year, Hoppers Crossing’s median house price increased 25 per cent to $535,000. The median house price in Werribee rose 21 per cent to $480,000, Wyndham Vale rose 18 per cent to $455,000, Tarneit 15 per cent to $525,000 and Point Cook 14 per cent to $630,000. “There were almost 900 house sales in Point Cook in the 12 months to May this year,” Mr Ryder said. “In Werribee, there were almost 800 sales, Tarneit around 750 sales and Hoppers Crossing about 650 sales, these are very high sales figures.” Alesha Capone

Riding to break the poverty cycle A Hoppers Crossing man will cycle solo from Adelaide to Melbourne later this month to raise funds for orphans and widows in India. Sean O’Keefe will cover 765 kilometres between September 24 and October 1 for his Ride to Empower to raise $20,000 to build refuges for orphans and widows. Mr O’Keefe said as a father and grandfather, he was keen to make a difference. “I can do a 100 kilometre ride without too much effort, but doing that for eight days in a row – that’s going to be the tough part,� he said. “There are 20 million orphans in India, but only 0.3 per cent of them are children who have neither parent. The rest of them are orphans through poverty. We have to do something. “The church [I go to] is working with people on the ground in India to set up these houses, these refuges, where orphan kids can come and have somewhere where they’re safe from sex trafficking, people trafficking, exploitation.� Mr O’Keefe hopes to turn the ride into an annual event, and recruit more people to participate next year. The failed fight to stop the Werribee tip expansion has cost ratepayers nearly half a million dollars. Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said it spent about $475,000 fighting a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) review into the Environment Protection Authority’s (EPA) decision to approve four new cells in the Wests Road landfill, which was brought about by the Western Region Environment Centre. VCAT upheld the EPA’s original decision, with minor amendments. “It is disappointing that the works approval cost so much, but we accept the right of environmental groups to object to landfilling,� Mr Thorpe said. Mr Thorpe said the VCAT decision, which would extend the tip’s lifespan for another 26 years, would make it easier to implement alternative waste strategies. Construction has already begun on a new cell however, Mr Thorpe said uncertainty created by the case meant several local government and commercial customers had already started taking their waste to other landfills, resulting in a 40 per cent drop to the amount of waste being sent to the RDF. He said the council will lose about $1 million in revenue a month until the first stage of the cell is completed in December. Western Region Environment Centre director Harry van Moorst said the group spent about $21,000 fighting the expansion. “We are not happy these costs are forced upon not-for-profit groups trying to protect the environment and the community while these government agencies and councils can resort to substantial funds from rate and taxpayers,� Mr van Moorst said.

Werribee school shines in VCE By Charlene Macaulay A select-entry government school has topped the list of Wyndham’s best-performing schools for VCE results. Suzanne Cory High School in Werribee boasts a median VCE study score of 35, with 20 per cent of students achieving study scores above 40, according to the Good Education Group’s latest Good Schools Guide. Truganina’s Westbourne Grammar came in second, with a median study score of 34 and 15 per cent of study scores above 40, followed by Werribee Secondary College, MacKillop College and Heathdale Christian College.
Suzanne Cory principal Colin Axup said that while he was pleased with the school’s median study score, the school placed more focus on students achieving the ATAR needed to get into their preferred university courses. “A better metric for us is the percentage of our students who get their first, second or third university course preference … close to 85 per cent of our students get one of their first three preferences,” he said. The school, which selects students based on their academic performance in an entrance exam, has 875 students across years 9 to 12. It is compulsory for all year levels to do sport, and every student also has to be involved in a
co-curricular activity such as arts, drama or music. “We’re more than just an academic high school; what we’re teaching is not only the subjects, but we’re also teaching life skills, and that concept of creating a well-rounded person,” Mr Axup said. Good Education Group chief executive Chris Lester said that while academic results were important, they weren’t the only factor parents should look at when choosing a school. “They might have modern sporting facilities, a great drama department, access to VET studies – there is plenty to take into consideration,” he said.

Stepping out, big time Hoppers Crossing’s Tamsyn Hovey is gearing up for a mammoth month. The year 11 Hoppers Crossing Secondary College student is one of 20 principal ensemble dancers selected from across the state to perform in the annual Victorian State Schools Spectacular, having blitzed two auditions to make the cut. The event will bring together 3000 students from 200 government schools in two shows that will this year centre around the theme “With the Beat”. Hovey has been in rehearsals since March and is looking forward to a great day, having performed in her first schools spectacular last year. “It was so much fun,” the 17-year-old said. “This year, there’s lots of amazing costumes, and the choreography’s insane. The whole show
is going to be so good.” Hovey has been doing jazz, tap, hip-hop, ballet, contemporary and song and dance classes since she was three years old. She loves performing. “In rehearsals, it’s fun, but once you actually go on stage it’s like, ‘Wow!’,” she said. She is also part of the team that is representing her school in the Wakakirri competition, which is Australia’s largest annual performing arts event for primary and secondary schools. The truth is often avoided for politeness, self-preservation and convenience, including the answers to “Does my bum look big in this dress?”, “How is everything with the meal?” and “Do you want to see photos of my new baby/grandchild/pet?” In sport, is there any bigger lie than when a club president says he or she backs the coach 100 per cent? That usually results in a sacking nanoseconds later. Politics abounds with lies and mistruths, as the likes of Rudd, Gillard, Abbott and Turnbull will attest. In court, you are sworn to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth – a mantra we might have to bring to day-to-day life very soon, if we are capable of dealing with it. Bomb scare
Employees were evacuated from a Laverton North recycling plant after a pipe bomb was located at the premises last Wednesday. Police officers attended the Gilbertson Road plant about 8.30pm. Bomb Response Unit officers were called in and conducted a controlled explosion of the bomb during the early hours of the morning, before declaring the industrial plant safe.
School upgrade
The Victorian government has announced a $161,000 grant to upgrade the sports oval at Baden Powell College in Tarneit. Western Metropolitan Region MP Cesar Melhem announced the funding last week for the Baden Powell Drive school. He said the Victorian School Building Authority would work with the college to get the upgrade works started. Real friends apparently tell – if you believe the movies and television reality shows. Funny, though, whenever I have seen this occur, the friendship lasts about as long as a prime ministership. What most friends do is not say anything and make sure they are there when it all falls apart. I am sure we have all had the experience when, after an emotional break-up, a friend or relative gleefully says, “I never liked him or her anyway”, thinking it will ease the pain. It doesn’t and we all know it, but we still do it. We seem to live in a world where we increasingly find honesty at the touch of a keyboard. If we don’t like it, we can keep searching until we find the honesty we like the most. That is good for our self-esteem for a short period, but eventually we have to face the truth. Real friends are honest, they have to be, but they know timing is the difference between helping someone face reality or plummeting someone into a downward spiral. The truth is, we can handle the truth. We just need it cooked to our liking. ■

By Alesha Capone The $93 million expansion of the Werribee Mercy Hospital was officially opened last week. Representatives from the hospital and Mercy Health were joined by the Health Minister Jill Hennessy, Werribee MP Tim Pallas, Lalor MP Joanne Ryan and Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard for the ceremony. Ms Hennessy said the hospital expansion would deliver “world-class clinical care” to patients.

“This is a very special moment for Mercy Hospital and Melbourne’s west,” she said. The state government contributed $85 million to the hospital expansion which includes four additional levels on top of the existing Catherine McAuley Centre. As part of the expansion, the hospital has six new operating theatres, 56 additional inpatient beds, eight new critical care beds and a central sterilising department. The expansion has taken the number of beds at the hospital to 298. A Werribee South resident has called on the state government to commit to the duplication and repair of Duncans Road while its interchange is being upgraded. Daphne Karantzouli says it beggars belief that the government has funded a revamp of the Duncans Road interchange – including a brand-new, duplicated bridge over the Princes Freeway and new freeway entry and exit ramps – without also funding duplication and repairs for the rest of the arterial, which stretches from Synnot Street to Wyndham Harbour. “Duncans Road does not start and end at the intersection of Duncans Road and K Road,” she said. “It is in appalling condition at the moment, and there is no funding set aside to do that. “What’s the good of building a [new] bridge when we have a single carriageway for Duncans Road either way?” Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the government would repair and resurface Duncans Road as part of the Western Roads Upgrade, which includes $600 million for road maintenance throughout the west. But duplicating the road was not on the agenda. “We’re fixing the sections that need it most and will deliver the best result for locals – cutting travel times, boosting safety and better connecting our growing communities,” Mr Donnellan said. Take-off time for scholarships By Tate Papworth Young people in the west will be the beneficiaries of a partnership set to create about 500 scholarships. Melbourne Airport is renewing its $440,000 partnership with Western Chances to provide scholarships for a further three years. Talented and motivated tertiary and high school students facing financial barriers and living in Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham will be eligible for the scholarships.
Melbourne Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi said he was proud to support the program. “Melbourne Airport is pleased to partner with such an effective community program that supports and motivates talented young people living in Melbourne’s west,” he said. “The scholarship program provides funding for items that make a real impact, ranging from text books and access to tutoring, to funding public transport and materials related to individual education needs, such as laptops.” Western Chances chief executive Rhyll

For these Hoppers Crossing triplets, practising their driving skills has been made three times easier thanks to the WynBay L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program. The 17-year-olds – Sarah, Madelyn and Joshua Chapman – have all participated in the program, which is funded by VicRoads to help young learner drivers complete the 120 hours of driving practice required before probationary driver’s licence tests can be undertaken. The program matches L-platers aged under 21 with licensed volunteers who assist them in developing good driving habits. The triplets were mentored by professional driving instructor Fiona Sulman, who volunteers for the L2P program. Sarah said the L2P program had been “invaluable”. “It was always hard for our mother to imagine how it was going to be possible to get 120 hours for the three of us,” Sarah said.

Super gran’s gram gift By Alesha Capone Tarneit grandmother Sue Tantaro – aka Supernanny – is on a mission to raise funds for her three grandsons, who all have a genetic condition called duchenne muscular dystrophy. Also known as DMD, the fatal illness causes muscle wasting, breathing difficulties and heart problems. Mrs Tantaro said that this Friday, World Duchenne Awareness Day, she would embark on a 79-day quest to lose at least 7.9 kilograms.
Mrs Tantaro said she was focusing on 7.9 kilograms because DMD affected the 79 exons within a person’s dystrophin gene. Mrs Tantaro said that for the weight-loss challenge, she had decided to exercise for at least 40 minutes a day. She will track her activity through an Apple watch app and post online, for people who sponsor her, to see. To help Mrs Tantaro with her weight loss efforts, Jenny Craig in Werribee will supply her with food for the 79 days, while F45 Training Hoppers Crossing has given her a full membership for the project.
Mrs Tantaro said the funds raised through her Super Nanny Cousins Crusade Appeal would go towards travel, medical expenses and speech therapy for her grandsons, Anthony, Jakob and Lukas. She said they were also fundraising to send the boys to Italy to gain access to a drug that can help DMD sufferers, but which is only available in European Union nations. “We are hoping to raise $20,000 but would love to raise more than that,” Mrs Taranto said. Wyndham council will investigate joining an app which rewards residents for engaging in healthy and sustainable activities such as walking and recycling. The idea to join the Green Money App was among a list of proposals contained in a draft Greenhouse Action Plan which the council adopted last week. The app allows councils and workplaces to reward residents and employees for activities such as walking, cycling, using a household recycling bin and saving energy. The app, which Melbourne city council is using, helps councils to give residents prizes such as discounted movie ticket offers and coffee vouchers. The draft greenhouse action plan also proposed Wyndham council trial two fully electric cars in its fleet and install electric chargers at its Hoppers Crossing council depot and the Wyndham Civic Centre. Other proposals in the plan included running an energy-efficient appliances bulk-buy initiative for the community, investigating a program to help pensioners and low-income earners to buy solar systems and piloting a green wall on a Wyndham building. Tag team to tackle youth crime By Alesha Capone A $1.7 million pilot program designed to cut youth crime will team youth workers and police in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong for the next 12 months. Minister for Police Lisa Neville visited Werribee last Wednesday to announce funding for the pilot, the Embedded Youth Outreach Project (EYOP), which will also run in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia. In the west, youth workers from the Youth Support and Advocacy Service (YSAS) will work alongside police from 4pm every night.
Victoria Police north-west metro region Superintendent Therese Fitzgerald said they would engage with youth at police stations and in the community, to provide support and referrals for issues such as family relationships, alcohol or drug abuse, unemployment, mental health and disengagement from school. Superintendent Fitzgerald said people aged 12 to 24 were the “largest contributors to crime” in the area. Leading Senior Constable Julie Prenc and YSAS youth worker Emma Norgate have teamed up to work with Wyndham’s young people.
Ms Norgate said in the past week, she and Leading Senior Constable Prenc had done a lot of proactive work. “That can really help bridge that gap between authority and the young people,” she said. She said the EYOP team hoped to engage with young people when they first came into contact with police. “Quite often that’s a time where we can do some really good work with them,” she said. Leading Senior Constable Prenc said working with Ms Norgate had been “a good eye-opener” in learning about how drugs and alcohol could affect a young person.

When worlds collide Two artists, two mediums, one shared passion. Point Cook photographer Robert Young has teamed up with Werribee sculptor Jonathan Mendez Baute in a unique exhibition that shines a spotlight on our changing planet. The result, Local, opened at the Wyndham Art Gallery last week. Young’s work includes a series of photos depicted the changing landscapes – due to both natural and man-made causes – at the black sand beach in Jokulsarlon, Iceland, and the sun-scorched sands of Coffin Bay in South Australia. “Jonathan said something that brought it down to the essence for me. He said ‘change has consequences’, and I thought, that’s a pretty good description of what I’m trying to do, and it’s obviously what he’s been working on,” Young said. “It’s about change, and how things change over time, what makes them change.
To me, things change on a minute-by-minute basis with the light and the weather, and the time of year.” Mendez Baute has used clay to create a number of sculptures of people and animals, including reptiles and sea creatures. “Art is part of my everyday life. I’m a father – my son just graduated from uni, my daughter’s in high school, I like to cook for the family, I work full-time, my wife works full-time – so my art really happens in the middle of life itself,” he said. “In my house, there’s the stand where I do my sculptures, and right next to it, I have the dirty dishes. “I don’t call myself an artist yet – I don’t speak the whole language.” The Local exhibition will run until October 28. You’ll be able to see for yourself next month when the Truganina Fire Brigade hosts its annual open day. Volunteer firefighters will be joined by members from the police air wing, uniform police, paramedics, State Emergency Service volunteers, the Coast Guard and other first responders, and will take part in mock-incidents
to show how emergency services respond. Truganina CFA member Michele Abbott said last year’s event attracted about 1500 people. “The community only see us when they need us,” Ms Abbott said. “This gives people the whole picture. We do scenarios on the day, the idea is to show the community that when we’re at an incident there’s responsibilities we all have, and we all work together.” The brigade’s junior members will do a demonstration on the day, while other members will educate locals about home fire safety.
Ms Abbott said the brigade wanted to reduce the number of structure fires in the area by 20 per cent over the next 12 months, due to recent increases in these types of fires. The open day also doubles as a recruitment drive to help boost Truganina Fire Brigade’s numbers. The Truganina branch has about 60 operational and non-operational members. The Truganina Fire Brigade open day will be held on October 14 from 10am-3pm at the corner of Leakes Road and Sunset Views Boulevard, Tarneit.
The Werribee Rotary Club has celebrated its 50th anniversary with a night of fun, fellowship and nostalgia. The club hosted its anniversary event at the Werribee Racecourse Function Centre on August 18. Charter members of the club, Tino Ballan and Ian Knight, told guests about the club’s formation. “I’m really glad that Ian asked me to be a Rotarian because I’m still enjoying it after almost 50 years,” Mr Ballan said. “Out of great fellowship, companionship and family involvement, the Rotary Club grew the service to the community, because all the members were very involved,” Mr Knight said. Art aid for the farmers Kids at Rainbow Bridge Education Centre in Point Cook will host a weekend art show to raise funds for drought-stricken farmers. Centre artists – including Nichole, 10, and Keelin, 12 – have painted works to be sold during the exhibition, to be held this Saturday from 10am and 4pm, in the Coles building at the Point Cook Town Centre. All funds raised from the show will be donated to the Buy a Bale program, run by Rural Aid. “When I knew that I was painting for the farmers, I tried to do a better job so I can make more money for them,” Nichole said. The youngsters said they hoped the exhibition would raise at least $500. “I just want to help the farmers because they won’t be able to grow vegetables and raise

animals,” Keelin said. “I would love to help them to survive in the drought.” Families and staff at Goodstart Early Learning in Barber Drive, Hoppers Crossing, have also banded together to help Australian farmers, collecting and donating food hampers. The centre partnered with Footscray-based Larthur Transport to deliver food to farmers as part of the Pakenham Hay Run last Friday. Goodstart’s Janine Ormsby said Larthur Transport had supplied a 10-pallet truck. “It has been a huge process – from collecting, sorting and packaging, with a lot of help after hours from staff, families and friends,” Mrs Ormsby said. Medal winning marriage By Goya Dmytryshchak A Laverton husband and wife have returned from their first Transplant Games of America as a married couple with 19 medals between them – but they say they won gold when they found each other. Terry Holyoak met Californian Anna Modlin at the end of the 2016 games. Ms Modlin, 37, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at 18 months and underwent a lung transplant eight years ago. Mr Holyoak, 42, was diagnosed with an eye deformity about age 11 and had two corneal transplants between the ages of 21 and 25. “It was a lot of interest at first sight,” he said of the first time he laid eyes on his future wife. “It was unexpected but it was good. She was my gold medal from two years ago.” Ms Modlin said not a day had passed since that first meeting that the two hadn’t spoken. “I was just doing my competition and I had a whole life and everything completely changed, because I’ve lived 10 miles from my own home where I was born my whole life and then I move here,” she said. She said the games, held every two years, were life-changing for all participants. The couple won medals in swimming, trivia, darts and dancing. They started learning ballroom dancing so they could compete. “Most people learn to dance before they have their wedding and they have their little dance but we kind of did it backwards,” Ms Modlin said. They will now compete at the Australian Transplant Games on Queensland’s Gold Coast from September 30 to October 6. For information on organ donation, visit www.donatelife.gov.au

MY WYNDHAM Cecil Sargent’s blood runs red, white and blue. The 87-year-old Tarneit resident is a die-hard Western Bulldogs fan who established the club’s first-ever merchandise shop. He tells Charlene Macaulay the full story. Tell me about your childhood in Footscray.
the girls how good we were. We went around together for a few years and got married in 1953. Pam passed away last year, but I’ve got lots of family and friends at Tarneit Skies who keep me company and in good spirits.
I’m 87 years old and was born in Footscray in 1930, during the depression. I was the youngest of four children. My father was a carpenter while my mum looked after the house and kids.
I understand you have a unique way of letting the neighbours know if the Bulldogs have won or lost each week…
How long have you called Tarneit Skies home, and what do you like about the area? I’ve lived at Tarneit Skies Retirement Village for 13 years. We had a big house and a big backyard, but it was too much, so we decided to downsize. My wife told everyone living here was like a second honeymoon. The area’s safe and everyone’s very friendly. I’m one of many football supporters in our village. There’s a bit of banter between the Pies, Blues, Tigers and Saints supporters and me. We all decorate our porches with our club’s colours.
If we win, I’ve got a happy looking stuffed bulldog which I put on the front porch wearing a team scarf. If we lose, I’ve got a sooky doll instead. It’s a doll with hands covering its eyes while it cries. She wears a Bulldogs guernsey too. We haven’t been playing too well this year, so the sooky doll has been out more than I’d like. You started the Bulldogs’ club shop in 1989. Tell me how that happened.
There’s not much I’d change. Wyndham’s a great place to live. I do think people need to have a greater tolerance of others and be more accepting though.

If you could change one thing about Wyndham, what would it be?
How did you become such a die-hard Western Bulldogs fan?
Footscray in 1906, so we spent a lot of time around the football club. I never played seniors but made the thirds [under-18s] in the 1940s. The club has been a big part of my life I’ve got three kids, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who are all Bulldogs supporters like me.
My blood runs red, blue and white. Some of my earliest memories are of watching Footscray play at Western Oval. My dad played in the seniors team at
They didn’t really have any other options. How did you meet your wife? I met my wife Pam at the football ground in the ’40s when I was playing thirds. We boys would go sit in the stands after our game and tell
I started the Bulldogs’ first club shop in 1989, but it was actually my wife’s idea. We wanted to raise money for the football club because it was struggling financially at the time. I had $300 to do it with. I spoke to the club’s chairman, who was a nice bloke, and he was happy for me to give it a go. My car was an old tradesman van. We sold scarfs and beanies in red, white and blue that the supporters and players’ wives had hand-sewn from the back of that van. Later on we had little stands around the ground where we sold things, and they were run by volunteers.

A crush on Croatia Stephen Linnell explores the Dalmatian Coast.
We have been wowed before. Rome’s Colosseum, France’s spectacular Palace of Versailles, the canals and narrow streets of Venice. So how would a seven day luxury cruise through Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast stack up? The stunning islands dotted with mystery and filled with history instantly seduced us. Centuries-old fortresses and battlements provided a dramatic backdrop to each island.
Our adventure started in Split, where the Palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian (built around the fourth century AD) looms large and consumes almost half the city. A wondrous start to our journey. From there, we boarded our Sail Croatia Elegance cruise ship, the Diamond. Initial concern that we had booked a 20-something party boat thankfully proved baseless. The vessel itself had a capacity for just 40
guests, with 19 cabins – just 24 people were on our cruise, mostly Australian. Our cabin was above deck, with plenty of room to move and a large ensuite. Our first overnight stop was the waterside village of Milna on the island of Brac, famous for providing the limestone used to build the White House in Washington. Second stop was the port city of Hvar, where we first explored the largest piazza in the
Adriatic before making the steep climb to the hilltop fortress, which offers extraordinary views of the old town and port, filled with multi-million dollar private yachts. The general routine throughout the week was cruise in the morning, before mooring in a cove for a morning swim. The waters around Croatia are crystal clear – and salty, but offered some great views for snorkelling.

We would then have a three course lunch aboard ship (every day it was superb) before docking at an island – allowing us to explore by foot, bicycle or vehicle. Day three we arrived at Vis, the outer most island. It has a remarkable military history dating back to the Venetians. We took a four-hour must-do military history tour of the island, which included astonishing stories of bravery from Allied pilots who used the island for emergency landings during World War II. The island fell into then-Yugoslavia’s hands after the war, and was essentially a closed military base until the late 1980s, when it was finally opened up to the public. We went underground and explored an amazing tunnel network used to supply the major gun installations that covered the four points of the island, before entering a now disused submarine base carved into a mountain – created by former President Tito and used during the Cold War. The tour continued with a must-stop visit to the famous Blue Cave, (or Blue Grotto) on the island of Bisevo, before taking us to the port of Vela Luka, then Korcula, a grand medieval town and the so-called birthplace of Marco Polo (he at least lived there for a period of time). This port was certainly one of the best. After a day exploring Mljet, famous for its National Park and two salt lakes, we finally arrived at our final destination, Croatia’s piece de resistance, Dubrovnik. A walk around the giant walled fortress is a must, as well as shopping in the old town.

SPORT Storm one win away from fairytale season Manor Lakes has a psychological edge over not only the rest of the Western Region Football League senior women’s competition, but also the weather. The Storm demolished Caroline Springs, keeping them goaless in a 60-point semi-final thrashing at Burbank Oval on Saturday to be the first team through to the grand final. The victory was set up in the first quarter when the Storm kicked three goals to nil kicking into a stiff breeze. “Our captain won the toss and doesn’t say we’re kicking into the wind, it’s only, we’re going that way,” Storm coach Nathan Smithwick said. “We kicked three goals to nothing in that quarter. “It’s a mind over matter type of thing and we just keep going.” Manor Lakes is one win away from a fairytale unbeaten season. The Storm went 13-0 in the regular season with an astronomically high percentage of 2708.93.

They cruised through the first final, keeping Caroline Springs to just seven behinds. While the Storm would be unbackable favourites on grand final day, Smithwick said the team cannot afford to get ahead of itself.
“It’s a sigh of relief to get to the grand final to start with,” he said. “Getting there first doesn’t make us a 70 per cent chance to win the game, we’re still a 50-50 chance of winning.” Gemma Anderson was outstanding for Manor Lakes in the midfield. She capped a best-on-ground performance with three goals. Smithwick implored coaches at higher levels to consider his star player. “Gemma’s a freak player,” he said. “She should be playing at a higher level.” Madisson Ahumada also jagged three goals for Manor Lakes. The midfield of Anderson, Ahumada, Jaimi Paten, Cara Dunshea, Jessica Court, Belinda Nancarrow and Diandra Sellers was totally dominant. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ At the elite level of sport no one wants to hang on for that last season where it becomes bleedingly obvious the carnival is over. I am sure those thoughts would have been racing through Dale Morris’ mind in recent months as he evaluated his future. In signing a one-year contract for 2019, the elder statesman of the Bulldogs has made many people happy. Unquestionably one of the nicest blokes to ever don the red, white and blue jumper, he is also one of the fiercest competitors and most durable players in the club’s history. His passion for the game and the club shines like a beacon and it will be great to see him running around again in the famous number 38. ■ John Lamont has moved on from Avalon Airport Oval after five years as senior coach and three before that in a development capacity via the North Melbourne alignment. Lamont finished on a high, with his side winning four of the last six games of the year and his final duty will be naming the 2018 Bruce Montgomery Trophy winner later this month. John has wonderful people skills and in the cut-throat environment of elite football, it’s a trait that goes a long way. That, along with his football know-how, will make him a wanted commodity. ■ The search for players is a constant for any football club and there will be many players contemplating their next move in the coming weeks and months. Rare hat-trick for Bears By Lance Jenkinson Let the debate begin, are the Werribee Bears the team of the decade in the NRL Victoria first grade? The Bears have achieved what no other club has done in this era by taking out a rare premiership three-peat. It is only the third time in top-flight history that a side has strung three premierships together. Sunbury has managed three premierships this decade, but not in the form of a three-peat. The 1990s had a three-peat side in the Waverley-Oakleigh Panthers from 1992-94, while the 2000s had the all-conquering Altona Roosters who won an unsurpassed four titles in a row from 2003-06, as part of a dynasty of seven premierships in 10 seasons. The Bears completed the hat-trick with a gutsy 12-8 grand final win over Sunbury Tigers at Haines Reserve on Saturday. “I’m kind of speechless,” he said. “The feeling is unreal. “I’m happy for the boys because they’re the ones who really deserve it.” We might have to wait until after the 2019 season to settle the debate over which team takes out team of the decade status. What is undisputed is that Werribee is the club of 2018. The Bears won the first grade men’s and first grade women’s premierships – on home soil. It was the first time Haines Reserve has hosted an NRL Victoria grand final day and it was a good one for the hosts. The day began well with the Bears trumping local rivals Truganina Rabbitohs 14-12 in the women’s first grade decider. The icing on the cake was the men’s side showing guts and determination to beat Sunbury. There was little to separate Werribee and Sunbury with the exception of one important ingredient. “Our boys had more determination,” Makiri said. “It came down to who wanted it more.”
Werribee started fast, scoring the opening try through Radeem Saleupolu after three minutes. The Bears charged out to a 10-0 lead when Kuros Metuariki converted the goal from his own try. All that was good for Werribee came on the back of strong play from Sepu Ryder, the game’s MVP. “He’s just went forward all day and he tackled all day,” Makiri said. “He produced 80 minutes of strong football.” Ten down was not a knockout blow for Sunbury. The Tigers got a late try through Ieremia Ieremia to trim the deficit back to six at half-time. Metuariki extended Werribee’s lead to 12-4 with a penalty goal midway through the second half before Samisoni Fusi crossed over for Sunbury to cut the lead to four. It was in the final 10 minutes that proved Werribee to be worthy champions. The Bears defensive line was being pushed and prodded in repeat sets, but they kept the Tigers at bay. “It was by far the best defence we’ve produced all year,” Makiri said.

■ I don’t think local and second tier footy cash in enough on the opportunity they have with the AFL bye weekend. Suburban leagues and VFL should fill some of the space normally given to AFL, but they have to do some work to get that space and airtime. In our backyard the Deer Park story is a beauty. If it wins and makes it six straight, what a dynasty. If it gets beaten it is the underdog story of the decade. Either way it is far more interesting than a large slab of what was written last week. If the bye week stays, local clubs should do some work to get some much-needed and deserved publicity.

Werribee’s win has other finalists on notice Werribee has started the Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 2 finals like a house on fire. The Tigers were at their scintillating best in 3-0 win over MHSOB in the elimination final at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Sunday. Three first half goals laid the platform for an eye-catching win that will put the rest of the finalists on notice. “They started with the ball and put us under pressure for the first five minutes,” Tigers defender Ross Cowlishaw said. “We picked it up after that and the goals were just flowing. They dropped their bundle a bit.” Scoring three goals against MHSOB is no mean feat. Doing so in a half is a rarity. MHSOB conceded on average just 1.27 goals per game in the regular season. Even Werribee found it nigh on impossible to break down the MHSOB defence in the regular season.
“They’re very hard to score against,” Cowlishaw said. “The first time we played them it was nil-nil and the second time was 2-1, so in two games we’ve only been able to score one goal. “To hit three in a half was good.” Werribee won the tactical battle. The Tigers build-up was patient, possessing the ball for large swathes of the game. Their goals, coming through a double from Sam Huxtable and one to Mark Beamish, were largely scored on the back of counter attacking moves. “We had to be patient, pass the ball around, look for the gaps and the openings,” Cowlishaw said. “We mainly got the goals from breakaways, rebound out of defence. “Everyone stuck to our structure and we were able to control the game.” Beamish is the unsung hero of the Werribee
forward line with his score involvements so important, but not grabbing the headlines as much as the finishers. “He does a lot of hard running and has got a good work rate,” Cowlishaw said. “He does a lot of the lead-up work that sets up a lot of short corners and passes across the goal for people to tap in.” Michael Gallo, Peter Nalder and Matthew Skoglund dictated play from the midfield, while Ryan Busst was a key link-up player up forward. The Tigers season was derailed by bogey side Spotswood in the Western Region Football League division 1 elimination final. It was the third time the two sides had met this season, with the Woodsmen emerging victorious on all three occasions. The 23-point loss in the do-or-die clash on Sunday was a bitter pill to swallow for Tigers coach Chris Gilham after his side entered the finals so full of promise. “We beat everyone in the competition bar Spotty,” Gilham said. “It’s one team we couldn’t get over. We can’t be dirty because we played them three times and they beat us every time.” The Tigers deserved more than a straight sets exit after an impressive season. A bounce of the ball here or there cost them a spot in the top three and the insurance of a double chance. They beat all top three teams during the season, including minor premier Altona, reigning premier Deer Park and Hoppers Crossing. They lost only four games, but drawn matches against Hoppers Crossing and Sunshine mid-season proved costly. “We played off in an elimination final, but we weren’t far off from finishing top or second,” Gilham said. “Then within two hours your season is over … that’s the hard part. “We lost at the same stage last year, but we were nowhere near good enough. “Whereas this year … we definitely thought we were good enough.” Werribee Districts fluffed too many chances to break its season duck against Spotswood. The Tigers kicked a wayward 11.15, while the Woodsmen were clinical in front of goal en route to 16.8. The Woodsmen laid the foundation with five goals straight in the first quarter and finished the job with a barnstorming seven goals straight in the fourth. “At one stage we were 12 points down and had eight more scoring shots,” Gilham said. “We just butchered some chances.” Will Sullivan finished the season on a high note. The recruit has been a strong aerial presence throughout the season. Andrew Panayi kicked three goals for the Tigers, while Lachlan Rainbow added two. Gilham hopes the pain of Sunday’s loss will spur the team to bigger things in 2019. “This is why winning finals and winning premierships are so sweet because they’re so hard to do,” he said. “It’s a six-month battle and four or five month preparation before that. And on the back of a bad quarter or a bad week, it can all be over and that’s how we’re feeling right now. “It will fuel you over the summer to want to get back there.” Hoppers Crossing will have to take the tough

Westbourne Grammarians’ rampaging second half of the season has come to a halt in the Victorian Amateur Football Association division 3. The Warriors fell one game short of the grand final, losing by 26 points to Hawthorn in the preliminary final on Sunday. The Citroen C3 may be light-on in variants – the new French compact comes to market in a single version, the Shine – but it has striking looks, cost savings and capacity to match the buyer’s own personality. With a skinny sticker price of $23,490, plus on-roads, the hatch is straight from the “Do you want fries with that?” design school – as a main course, it may seem meagre, but it comes with an optional “sides” menu of lip-smacking proportions. For starters there are 33 exterior colour combinations. Standard segment-first safety features on the all-new C3 include traffic sign speed recognition and recommendation, plus lane departure warning.

Safety
The C3’s standard lane departure warning helps guard against driver inattention at speeds above 65km/h, giving audible and visual warnings if the car crosses a lane marker line without the indicator being used. Driver attention alert tells drivers when it is time to take a break, the system activating after two hours of uninterrupted driving at speeds above 70km/h, then on the hour.
Styling
The design has taken on a new look without ignoring features that made its predecessor so popular. Front on, the C3 fits with its robust intent, the signature twin chevron taking pride of place flanked by a two-tier front light set-up reinforcing bonnet height. A floating roofline is enhanced by black windscreen pillars, body surfaces extending downwards over large-diameter wheels. At the rear, muscular wings give a creature-of-prey appearance. The car as a whole lends itself to customisation, including no-cost options such as 17-inch diamond cut black alloy wheels, body-coloured roof and white or red two-tone roof.
Interior
The dashboard design features trim that adds a feel of width to the cabin. Buyers have a choice of finishes – paint, textile or TEP lining, ordered with or without overstitching.

The new C3 Shine presents the world premiere of Citroen ConnectedCAM, a fully-integrated HD camera system that films on-road experiences for immediate sharing on social media. A 7-inch touchscreen gives access to a range of safety, phone and media functions including Apple CarPlay and mirror screen, which duplicates the driver’s smartphone screen on the central display.
Engines / transmissions
The C3’s 81 kW version of the turbocharged 1.2-litre PureTech e-THP engine is the same three-cylinder unit found in a variety of vehicles. Mated with an electronically-controlled, six-speed automatic gearbox, gear changes are 40 per cent faster than those of previous gearboxes. Higher gear ratios maintain start-up performance and decrease engine speed at higher vehicle speeds.

Citroen claims combined urban/highway fuel consumption of 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres and carbon dioxide emissions as low as 110 g per kilometre. The test car used a not-so-optimistic 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres on the motorway. The C3 rides out minor road surface blemishes with smooth confidence, but the suspension does let occupants know of any major pot holes. Steering is light but direct and body roll not an annoyance. Disc brakes do the job well.
