Garden haven springs a treat A Werribee garden will open its gates to the public for the first time this spring. Jet set take-off at Avalon By Charlene Macaulay Pack your bags – Avalon Airport’s international terminal will soon have travellers jetsetting across the globe. Construction is well under way on the $38 million terminal, which will cover about 7000 square metres. The roof and main structure are close to completion and will be followed by the internal fit-out of the passenger lounge, kitchens, duty free areas, retail areas and border control. Avalon Airport chief executive Justin Giddings said the terminal had been designed for quick and easy use by travellers.
“We have configured it in a way that is really easy to navigate through – there’s no real long walks,” Mr Giddings said. “For example, you’ll check in at the main domestic terminal, then you’ll walk through into the international terminal via a forecourt. That forecourt will have some coffee shops, some other amenities in there, but then you’ll walk into the main international terminal where you’ll just walk straight through security and then go into the immigration area. “Once you pass through immigration, you’ll walk through duty free and then into the lounge. Likewise, coming in from the plane, you’ll walk off the plane, over the tarmac, pass
through duty free and into the immigration area. Once you’re through there, you’ll go through and pick up your bags and simply walk out of the terminal. “It’s all one level, so it’s really easy to navigate and we think it will be really popular.” It is expected more than 500,000 people will go through Avalon’s international terminal in its first year of operation, with the very first AirAsia X flight scheduled to arrive at Avalon on the morning of December 5. Mr Giddings said that while Avalon’s current focus was getting ready for AirAsia, the airport was keen to sign on more international carriers.

Leaks force basketball washout By Alesha Capone The Werribee Basketball Association president has expressed frustration that the roof of the $47 million Eagle Stadium is still leaking, more than three months after the issue was raised. About 200 junior basketballers were told they couldn’t play on August 11, when games at the stadium were cancelled because of its faulty roof. Several courts were shut down – or affected by leaks – for about five and a half hours. WBA president Paul Jones said the Werribee
Basketball community “remains frustrated by the ongoing issues with Eagle Stadium’s roof”. “As a major tenant of the stadium, these roof leaks continue to have a significant impact on our competitions, clubs and, most importantly, players. “Since our winter 2017 season, the number of participants impacted by roof leaks leading to game cancellations is a staggering 1200 plus participants. “Since this issue was raised publicly in the Star Weekly earlier this year [May], we have been advised by the stadium’s owner, Wyndham City Council, that progress has
been made on ‘rectification works’ but, as last weekend shows, it remains a serious problem when we experience poor weather,” Mr Jones said. “We continue to call on the council to fix the roof so the kids of Wyndham can play sport – as our community is all too aware, this has been a problem with the stadium since it opened.” Eagle stadium is owned by the Wyndham council and managed by Western Leisure Services. Wyndham council’s acting chief executive, Stephen Thorpe, said the council was
“continuing to investigate” the stadium’s roof leaks but that all the sources, or causes, of the leaks had not yet been confirmed. “We have sought expert advice on the potential causes of the issue and possible measures to rectify it,” Mr Thorpe said. “We have implemented a short-term measure to minimise leaking with a view to limiting further damage to the fabric of the roof and inconvenience to users of the facility.” During June last year, the council also shut down parts of the stadium for a fortnight to fix a faulty gym floor which was damaged by regular gym use.

A blooming good idea
An $8.28 million refurbishment of Wyndham council’s civic centre will include more of an open-plan feel to help make better use of existing office space. Wyndham council acting chief executive Stephen Thorpe said work had already begun on the fit-out and refurbishment of about 6195 square metres of office space. “This project aims to make better use of the existing building, enabling staff to be accommodated in a more flexible work environment,” Mr Thorpe said. “By maximising use of the available space, we will be able to avoid the cost of a new building or major extension works as council keeps up with the population growth occurring in Wyndham. “This project will see a change from providing staff with offices and allocated desks to an open office that provides for increased building capacity for the future.” The refurbishment does not include any carparking changes or upgrades, despite council staff parking in nearby residential streets, service lanes and on the side of the Princes Highway due to a lack of on-site spaces. Mr Thorpe said residents would face no changes to service delivery during the construction period. The work is expected to be completed by late September next year.

Fashion imitates life Hoppers Crossing woman Chi Cao says her own metamorphosis has inspired her latest fashion designs. Mrs Cao has just completed an advanced diploma of applied fashion design and merchandising at the Kangan Institute. She is one of 45 tertiary students from across the state whose designs have been selected for the Melbourne Fashion Week Town Hall Runway Four – Student Collections parade on September 5. Mrs Cao said she never thought she would become a fashion designer, although when she was growing up in Vietnam, her aunts sewed and her mother would often crochet and knit. Mrs Cao said she studied to be a vet in Vietnam, but after coming to Australia would have needed to study further to work here. Instead, she attended Kangan Institute with hopes of opening an alterations shop. Mrs Cao, who now wants to become a fashion designer or pattern maker, has named the three dresses and cape she created for Melbourne Fashion Week as the Metamorphosis Collection. “I am changing myself ‌ which led me to explore the metamorphosis process, like a caterpillar to a butterfly, sand to a pearl, a flower after it blooms, all these things inspired me,â€? she said.

Wyndham council has received a planning application for an energy recovery plant in Laverton North that would generate enough electricity to power 16,000 to 20,000 houses a day. Recovered Energy Australia submitted the proposal to the council last month and lodged a works approval application with the state Environment Protection Authority last week. The proposal, if approved, would see a “waste gasification to energy plant� built at 24 Alex Fraser Drive. Recovered Energy Australia director Ian Guss said the plant would be worth “in the order of around $100 million�. The plant would operate 24/7 and provide employment for between 15 and 25 people. The facility, which would be a first of its kind in Australia, would convert up to 200,000 tonnes of general household domestic waste a year into about 10 megawatts of baseload renewable energy to be fed back into the grid. Mr Guss said the waste gasification-toenergy process was used throughout Asia and the Middle East. He said it met Victorian operational and environmental standards and was “an economically viable alternative for municipal waste disposal�. “We believe this is going to be a community solution to a community problem,� he said. Mr Guss said the application would be made available for public consultation as part of the EPA and council processes. A public meeting will be held at the Wyndham Eco-Living Centre, 28 Ridge Drive, Wyndham Vale, on Thursday, August 23, from 7pm to give residents an update on the proposal.

Push for more cancer screening

West rallies for farmers By Alesha Capone A group of businesses in the west, including Point Cook’s Agfab Engineering, are pooling their resources to help drought-stricken farmers in New South Wales. Agfab director John Frattin and his son Joe will donate 100 bales of hay to farmers in Broken Hill, through Rural Aid Australia’s Buy a Bale initiative. The two men were on site as the hay was harvested and baled at their family’s property in Little River on Friday, before being loaded
onto semi-trailers. Mr Frattin said some employees donated their time to drive the hay to Broken Hill. Semi Skel Hire in Laverton, Green Crop Products in Hoppers Crossing and Damorange Refrigerated Transport in Werribee South have also lent vehicles to help transport the hay, while Western Industrial Plumbing Service, Selman Brothers, JDK Management and Matt Brown – some of which are based as far away as Shepparton – also helped out with transport. Joe said that since he began talking
about donating the hay, the businesses of AIRR, Jamac Earthmoving and Plant Hire, Designer Look Kitchens, A1 Custom Rides, Sign Raizor and Wallington Rural and Garden Supplies had donated dog food and horse chaff to be transported to New South Wales. Werribee South’s Christou Farms, D. Berias & Sons, Fresh Select and Patsuris Premium Produce have also donated boxes of vegetables to help feed the farmers, with Kalafatis Coolstores, R. Hasan & Co and Spencer Ranch also making donations.
The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network has launched a project aimed at increasing community participation in cancer screening in Wyndham and Brimbank. The network, which is also known as the NWMPHN, is calling for general practitioners to submit expressions of interest to sit on the project’s governance body, the Cancer Screening Committee. The three-year cancer screening program, which is being funded by the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services, aims to increase participation in bowel, cervical and breast cancer screening programs, especially within the Aboriginal community in Wyndham. The program will also target Brimbank residents from multicultural backgrounds and low socio-economic circumstances. General practitioners who join the Cancer Screening Committee will be required to participate in bi-monthly meetings of one hour, in either Brimbank or Wyndham. The council is there to work with the state government, regardless off which party holds power, and theyy need to be as independent as possible to negotiate on our behalf. This is a time ffor councillors to maintain a very balanced view on all issues, and to remember who they are representing. The latter should be their modus operandi at all times. Unhealthyy egos and personal agendas, as previously ly mentioned, cloud judgement and decision making ffar too much at all levels of government. It would be refres f hing to see someone rise above the usual level of performance f in the coming weeks. â–

A 21-year-old Tarneit man and a 20-year-old Altona North man have lost their probationary licences for a month, after being caught speeding in Laverton last Wednesday. Police saw a Range Rover and a BMW coupe driving on the Princes Freeway about 11.30pm, with both cars reaching speeds of up to 134km/h. Police intercepted the Range Rover on the freeway and caught up with the BMW a short time later.
Teen charged An 18-year-old Werribee man had his vehicle impounded after police detected him speeding at 160km/h on the Princes Freeway about 10pm last Tuesday. Westgate Highway Patrol officers charged the man with speeding at 45km/h over the limit and driving at a speed dangerous. The man will also have to pay more than $1006 to get his car our of the impound lot.

Killer mum’s sentence reduced By Adam Cooper, The Age with AAP Akon Guode, the woman who killed her three youngest children by deliberately driving her car into a lake, has had her jail term slashed by eight and a half years on appeal. Guode was last year jailed for 26 and a half years for driving into Lake Gladman in Wyndham Vale with four of her children in the car on April 8, 2015. Four-year-old twins Hanger and Madit and 16-month-old Bol all drowned, but their older sister, now 8, was rescued by residents
and emergency service workers. Guode appealed against her sentence and the Court of Appeal last Thursday cut the jail term to 18 years. She must serve 14 years before she is eligible for parole, having previously been jailed for a minimum of 20 years. Chief Justice Anne Ferguson found Guode’s state of mind was disturbed when she drove into the lake, as a result of the traumatic birth of her youngest child, Bol. Guode has already served three years in prison, meaning she could be released in
just over a decade, although she faces being deported to her native South Sudan on her release. Guode pleaded guilty to two counts of murder, one of attempted murder and one of infanticide. The charge of infanticide applies to women who kill their children who are younger than two when affected by mental-health problems related to childbirth. The infanticide charge relates to Bol’s death. Guode’s lawyers argued that her offending be viewed through the infanticide prism
given she was a mother of seven in financial trouble whose mental health had declined since she lost a lot of blood during Bol’s birth. Justice Ferguson said before Guode and her children came to Australia she lived a difficult life in South Sudan, having witnessed the murder of her husband before she was raped. The appeal judges found Guode “fatefully and irredeemably breached” her children’s trust but also “her capacity to make calm and rational decisions was severely compromised by a mental condition”.
The gift of generosity Tarneit youngster Milan, is again using his birthday as a way to help other children. Milan, who will be 10 next month, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when he was just three years old. This November will mark three years since his last chemotherapy treatment. In 2015, when he was still undergoing chemotherapy, Milan told his mother he wanted to share his birthday with other patients at the Royal Children’s Hospital. Magic for Milan, an annual event during which Milan and his family collect presents and vouchers for children with cancer, was born. This year, Magic for Milan will also be raising funds for Challenge, a charity which supports children with cancer and their families. Milan said he was happy to see the community getting behind his fundraising efforts, because he and his siblings had attended
some of Challenge’s programs. Milan’s school, Tarneit P-9 College, will host a fundraising day with the theme “Be Your Hero” on September 21. Parents from Werribee’s Flames Basketball Club have also donated books and puzzles. “I’d like to say thank you to everybody for the donations and for helping,” Milan said. High-density housing good to go By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has signalled it will support building high-density housing in the Werribee CBD, Williams Landing town centre and Wyndham Harbour. The council has released a new version of its 2014 Housing and Neighbourhood Character Strategy, which was revised this month after community consultation, to include its stance on high-density housing, including units and apartments, across the three locations. The council will also encourage smaller
housing types, such as one and two-bedroom dwellings, within the three areas. The strategy states that 92 per cent of dwellings in Wyndham have three or more bedrooms and that more diversity is needed. Two sites are identified, 771 Ballan Road, Manor Lakes and 840 Sayers Road, Tarneit, as having the potential for high-density development, based on criteria including being within a 400 metre radius of a main bus route or train station. According to the strategy, Wyndham’s population is expected to increase annually by an average of 3.4 per cent until 2036, and that
80,000 new dwellings would need to be built to cope with demand. The strategy also found: • In 2016 there were 75,281 dwellings in Wyndham. • Council analysis has found that approximately 72,000 new dwellings could be built within Wyndham’s established areas. • The estimated combined housing capacity of Wyndham’s greenfield areas (sites with an existing or proposed Precinct Structure Plan) stands at 93,000 dwellings. Wyndham’s urban futures portfolio holder Cr Intaj Khan said the Housing and
Neighbourhood Character Strategy was designed to guide the next 20 years of housing development in the municipality. “With Wyndham’s population growing faster than almost any other municipality in Australia, this is one of the most important strategies for the future,” Cr Khan said. The council will seek permission from the state government to amend the Wyndham Planning Scheme to implement the strategy, with further community consultation expected in October. Casey’s hair to help Teenager Casey Goonan-King has raised more than $2300 for charity by having her long locks of hair cut. The 18-year-old’s hair – about 63 centimetres long and hanging lower than her hips – was cut off in front of students and staff at Manor Lakes P-12 College earlier this month to raise money for Variety – The Children’s Charity. Ms Goonan-King said that she raised about $500 on the day her hair was cut off at school. With an online funding page also assisting, she raised $2318.19. While the money she raised will go to Variety, Ms Goonan-King said that she had donated her cut-off hair to a program that makes wigs for children suffering from terminal illnesses. “I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for kids and I’ve seen many of my family members go through cancer,” Ms Goonan-King said. “For me, even trying to begin to imagine being such

Angling for a coast to toast By Charlene Macaulay Community fishing competitions, more cafes and new shared paths have been identified as the hooks needed to enhance Wyndham’s coastline. Wyndham council has released an issues and opportunities discussion paper that will inform a wider Coastal Management Plan aimed at guiding planning and development of coastal land from the Werribee River to Point Cook Coastal Park.
The paper says hotels, caravan parks, fish and chip shops and cafes, retailers that sell locally grown produce, recreation experiences such as fishing charters, along with fuel suppliers, had the greatest potential to attract more people to Wyndham’s coast. Other issues and opportunities included: • New shared paths or connections between existing walking and cycling, particularly between Wyndham Harbour and Werribee’s CBD, and Sanctuary Lakes and Point Cook Coastal Park.
• The possible development of a coastal litter plan that could include the provision of recycling bags, fishing waste bins and dog poo collection bags in high-use beach areas. • The need for future waterfront facilities for triathlon and fishing clubs and sea scouts, and additional boat ramps for a range of water sports. • Making the coastline more accessible for people with disabilities. • Some nudists still use the beach at Campbells Cove, despite it no longer being a nudist beach.
• The road network leading to the coastline needs upgrading. • Activities such as food trucks, markets and community fishing competitions could be used to encourage more people to enjoy Wyndham’s coastline. “Increased use, development and access to the Wyndham coastline presents significant opportunities to attract new visitors,” the paper reads. Top crew on guard duty The first all-female crew in the history of the Werribee Coast Guard will take to the water next month. The Werribee Coast Guard, also known as VF10 or Victorian Flotilla 10, has been operating for about 25 years. However, flotilla commander Bruce Lawrence said that during that time, its patrol boat had never been crewed by a group made up entirely of women. That will change on September 29, when a team of female volunteers – Claudine Keepa, Marilyn Carre, Angelique Ford, Celestine Hade and skipper Charmaine Meilar – do their first shift together. Ms Ford said it was an exciting event. “I hope this may give other women a chance to think about joining,” she said. Ms Meilar said she joined the Coast Guard because she wanted to give back to the community. “Volunteering is great when you enjoy what
you’re doing, and there is a good crew and flotilla here,” she said. Ms Carre said she first contacted the Coast Guard to ask if she could do some volunteer office work, but they offered her a chance to join the boating crew. “I knew nothing at all, but I’ve learned heaps,” she said. The Werribee Coast Guard will hold an open day on Saturday, September 29, from noon3pm – unless it is required to respond to an incident. Members of the public will be able to board the VF10 boat and chat to volunteers at the Wyndham Harbour Marina. Gold coin donation required. Duncans Road fix starts Work has begun on a revamp of the Duncans Road interchange, but drivers will have to wait three years before the project is fully complete. The existing bridge over the Princes Freeway will be replaced with another bridge that will provide two lanes in each direction. New freeway entry and exit ramps will be constructed as part of the upgrade, adding an exit to Werribee for Melbourne-bound traffic and a freeway entry for Geelong-bound traffic. New traffic lights will be added to the freeway ramps and the K Road intersection to improve safety and traffic flow, and a new walking and cycling path will be built over the freeway, to give pedestrians and cyclists travelling between Werribee and K Road a safer route. Drivers have been advised to expect some
delays and to add a bit of extra time when travelling through the interchange as works are carried out. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. The works are part of the government’s $1.8 billion Western Roads package, which will duplicate and widen seven of Wyndham’s busiest roads. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said more than 11,000 vehicles used the Duncans Road interchange every day. “We’re completing the Duncans Road interchange to make it safer and easier for locals and to improve access to popular tourist attractions,” he said. New jobs precinct push By Charlene Macaulay A Wyndham council director has called on the state government to turn around Werribee’s dole bludger reputation by committing to the East Werribee Employment Precinct. Council major projects director Kate Roffey said developing the East Werribee Employment Precinct was the key to tackling high unemployment in Wyndham and reducing traffic congestion to and from the city. “The key to unlocking capacity in both those areas is to create jobs here, in the municipality, so you don’t have to travel all the way to the city for work,” she said.

In 2016, the state government identified the Australian Education City consortium as the preferred bidders for the precinct. The consortium, which has a vision for a $30 billion education, research and employment city at the site, has since been negotiating exclusively with the government. “The Australian Education City is really critical to that jobs creation, because it’s en masse,” Ms Roffey said. “When you’ve got something of this scale, it brings a conglomeration of jobs into the area across different sectors and from that you get knock-on economic benefits in other areas.” Ms Roffey’s comments come after the state Department of Human Services and Australian Federal Police launched a taskforce to crack down on areas known to be hot spots for welfare non-compliance, including Werribee.

“This is the exact reason why we need something like the Australian Education City here,” Ms Roffey said. Ms Roffey said while she wasn’t privy to the government’s conversations with the consortium, she was still hopeful that the project would go ahead.
A spokesperson from the state Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources said the government was still considering the consortium’s employment precinct proposal. “The proposal is complex and the timing of the process reflects this,” she said.
Government tenant secured A new state government department will make Williams Landing home in 2019. Construction has begun on a new four-storey building along Overton Road, that will be fully leased to the Victorian State Government (Minister for Finance) for at least 15 years. The building will form part of the greater Williams Landing Town Centre and will accommodate up to 320 employees. Construction is expected to be complete by October next year. The project is the third commercial building built in Williams Landing by developer Cedar Woods, which is also responsible for the Target Australia headquarters set to be complete at the end of this year. Cedar Woods chief operating officer Patrick Archer said the new development proved Williams Landing was quickly becoming a white-collar employment precinct. “Employers continue to value our excellent train and road access and proximity to the Melbourne CBD and western suburbs workforce, along with the retail, leisure and services amenities at Williams Landing Town Centre,” he said. Wyndham council future focused economy portfolio holder Walter Villagonzalo added: “With Wyndham outgrowing cities like Greater Geelong, the jobs that this project will bring to our city are indeed welcome”. Tutors join the club Maria Sutherland is helping children develop their reading and writing skills at Wyndham Park Primary School in Werribee. Mrs Sutherland is a volunteer tutor with the Learning Club, which is run as a partnership between the school and The Smith Family in Werribee. The club runs on Wednesday afternoons for pupils in grades 3 to 6 and involves learning-based games and one-on-one reading. Some older students, in grades 5 to 6, help out as “reader leaders”. It was through her membership of the Point Cook VIEW Club that Mrs Sutherland became a volunteer tutor. Police have a lot on their plate By Alesha Capone Two Wyndham postcodes have recorded some of the highest levels of number plate theft in the state. According to the Crime Statistics Agency, there were 334 reported number plate thefts within the 3029 postcode (which covers Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina), from April last year to March this year. These figures place the 3029 postcode at fourth-highest in the state for number plate thefts during the timeframe.
The 3030 postcode (Werribee, Werribee South, Point Cook, Quandong and Derrimut) recorded 289 number plate thefts, putting it ninth-highest in the state for the same time. The 3175 postcode (which covers the Dandenong area) was the highest in the state with 375 recorded number plate thefts. In comparison, there were 116 number plate thefts in the 3028 postcode (Laverton and Altona Meadows), 64 in the 3024 postcode (Mambourin, Wyndham Vale, Mount Cottrell and Manor Lakes), 36 in the 3026 postcode (Laverton North), 34 in from the 3027 postcode
(Williams Landing) and just six in the 3211 postcode (Little River). Wyndham police Inspector Marty Allison said across the state almost a third of all thefts involving vehicles were number plates thefts. “Theft of and from motor vehicle crimes have been a key focus for us over the past few years,” Inspector Allison said. “Targeted operations to address high-volume crime in Wyndham have led to significant reductions in overall theft. “We have been targeting hot spots and recidivist offenders and ensuring our crime
scene units prioritise vehicle crime so that we can quickly identify offenders.” Inspector Allison said numberplate theft was a serious crime which can often lead to further offending such as ram raids, petrol drive-offs, toll evasion and joy-riding. “If we can make it as hard as possible for number plates to be stolen, we’d be making a dent in a number of crime categories,” he said. Inspector Allison said to help prevent number plate thefts, motorists could fit one-way screws or attend a “Safe Plate” day to have the screws fitted for free.
Patients get room to heal Patients of the Intensive Care Unit at Werribee Mercy Hospital now have a room to recuperate and spend time with their loved ones, thanks to a generous donation. One of Australia’s largest independent family philanthropic funds, Gandel Philanthropy, has donated $300,000 to the hospital’s ICU Appeal. The money has been used to create a wellness room to help patient recovery. The room includes a landscaped terrace behind a glazed screen, with motorised louvres which provide natural ventilation. Gandel Philanthropy’s chief executive officer Vedran Drakulic said the organisation’s trustees wanted to support the hospital because it is one of the “key public hospitals in the growth corridor that is the western suburbs”. “Our support is directed towards the wellness area, because such spaces in a hospital aim to improve health outcomes for patients,” he said.
“Research shows gardens or wellness areas can help relieve symptoms, reduce stress and anxiety in patients and also improve their overall sense of wellbeing and hopefulness.” Mercy Health Group’s chief executive officer, Adjunct Professor Stephen Cornelissen, said the “generous donation” would provide patients and their families with “a welcoming and tranquil space” to enjoy time together. Werribee Mercy Hospital received $85 million in the 2015-16 state budget to provide intensive care and other services to the community, including building an eight-bed ICU. The Mercy Health Foundation and the Werribee Hospital Foundation committed to raising $2 million to furnish and equip the new ICU. A hacking good time One of the world’s biggest hackathons will return to Werribee next month. The GovHack event, which was first held at the Wyndham Civic Centre last year, involves coders, data analysts, marketers, graphic designers, communicators and residents being put into teams and challenged to develop ideas and projects using publicly available data. The competition runs simultaneously across Australia and New Zealand over a 46-hour period. At the end of the event, each team submits its entries to be in the running for an award. Wyndham’s smart city portfolio holder, Cr Aaron An, said he was excited to see what ideas people would come up with at this year’s event. “Last year, Wyndham city hosted GovHack for the first time and it was a huge success,” he
said. “We had the second largest number of participants in Victoria, with more than 100 people taking part.” Last year, six Wyndham teams created 16 entries. The TreeMate team, which created a mobile game with the objective of collecting information on all the trees in a neighbourhood, to motivate people to get out of their houses and connect with the environment, went on to win a national award. “I can’t wait to see what comes out of Wyndham’s GovHack event this year,” Cr An said. Meet the newest candidate contesting the seat of Tarneit in this year’s state election. Tarneit resident Arnav Sati has thrown his hat in the ring as an independent, saying he wants to make the seat of Tarneit marginal to attract more attention and funding from the state government. In January, Mr Sati started an online petition calling for stricter bail laws and more powers for police that amassed more than 18,000 signatures. He has also been outspoken about the need for more carparking at Tarneit train station. The 35-year-old IT analyst and first-time candidate said the electorate had been “categorically neglected and ignored by both sides of politics”. “We have genuine issues in the area, like inadequate train station parking, congested V/Line train services, infrequent bus services, busy single-lane roads, crowded schools and so forth, that are not getting addressed by people in power,” he said. “I am a local who is directly impacted by the lack of infrastructure in Tarneit. “I share the same woes and frustration on a daily basis as any other resident living in the area. I don’t need a letter from a resident to make me aware of the issues.” Mr Sati also identified turning Wyndham North police station into a 24-hour police station and more schools – particularly in Williams Landing and Truganina – as other pressing issues. He goes up against Labor candidate Sarah Connolly, Liberal candidate Glenn Goodfellow and Greens candidate Beck Sheffield-Brotherton, who are also contesting the seat.

Mayoral Column Council’s Environment and Sustainability Portfolio Councillor Heather Marcus represented Council at Keep Victoria Beautiful’s statewide Sustainable Cities Awards recently. Past award winners include Councils, schools, charities, sporting clubs as well as individuals who make their local environments more beautiful and sustainable. It was great to see our neighbours Melton receive not only the Sustainable Council Award but also the overall Sustainable City Award. This year three of Wyndham’s programs were finalists. The Resource Recovery & Waste Management category included two of our programs – Wyndham’s Reverse Vending Machine initiative and the Wyndham Recycle Right campaign. We also received a highly commended mention as a finalist in the Environmental Sustainability category for our Wyndham Solar City program. This solar program is one of the largest rollouts of commercial-scale rooftop solar on Council buildings across Australia. As a self-confessed waste-tragic, it’s great to see Wyndham hitting above our weight while also providing high quality waste, recycling and environmental programs for our community. A lot of our hard work is done by Council staff and I’d like to acknowledge their work publicly. A secret garden at Cloverdale estate, on the outskirts of Werribee, has been more than 35 years in the making. Now, amateur gardener Connie Menegazzo will open up her garden to the public for the first time. Connie and her husband Julian bought the 149-hectare (370 acres) farm in 1981 and moved into the house two years later. Back then, there were only two river red gums on the estate, both dating back more than 400 years. One has since died, but its trunk still cuts an impressive figure coming out of Lollypop Creek – which runs through the property – and remains the favourite perching spot for a number of ibis, Mrs Menegazzo said. Today, the three-hectare garden includes many varieties of roses, wisteria and rose-trained arbors, sedums, frangipanis and irises, weeping willows and a forest with meandering walking paths. There is also a vegetable patch, chickens and a small orchard. “We started planting in 1983-84 but it was pretty tough, because it was just a bare paddock and we had a lot of issues with wind – it was really hard to get things going,” Mrs Menegazzo said. “In the early days it was what lived, great, and we planted more of that, and what didn’t work we didn’t try again. It has definitely been a work in progress.” One of the estate’s most prominent features, a long driveway lined with an avenue of golden elms underplanted with spring bulbs, almost didn’t come to fruition after a flood knocked many of the newly-planted trees down.

However, all it took was for the Menegazzos to lift the trees back into their original place, and all was well. “I love this garden because it’s always changing,” Mrs Menegazzo said. “If you go out now you’ll start to see all the
roses are starting to bud, the irises are growing – everything’s coming back to life. It’s a lot of work to clean it all up, but it’s so rewarding. It’s so beautiful. “But I’m no expert – it’s really just hit and miss.”

By Charlene Macaulay A lantern festival along the Federation Trail and a pop-up park in Point Cook are among a host of Wyndham-based festivals, art installations and community projects vying for a piece of state government funding. Wyndham residents can cast their vote across 48 ideas as part of the Pick My Project initiative, with voting open between now and September 17 for residents 16 years and over. Projects with the most votes in the western metro region will share in $1 million funding.
Ian MacGowan from the Williams Landing Residents Association is pushing for a lantern festival in April along the Federation Trail between Sayers Road and Skeleton Creek, which would include installations by artists, lanterns made by the community and decorative lights. Point Cook Action Group’s Susan McIntyre, one of the driving forces behind a pop-up park at Point Cook Town Centre’s restaurant precinct along Murnong Street, said the park would give Point Cook locals “vibrancy and connectiveness right in the heart of our town centre”.
Other project ideas include: • Transforming the Southern Rural Water water tower in Werribee into a giant artwork by painting a mural on its surface; • Repairing bikes dumped at the Wyndham Waste and Recycling Transfer Station and making them available to local schools and disability, community and service groups; • Hosting a tea and coffee festival that aims to share and celebrate cultural hot drinks; and • A new score shed and storage garage for Wyndham BMX club. The Migrant Resource Centre is hoping to help more people on the road to independence. The MRC in St Albans has been running a driver education program for new migrants, for the past eight years, helping them with the practical and theoretical elements of getting out on the road. Trainer Deng Yong Deng said it had been an invaluable program. “We book it out every time, and have a long waiting list of people who want to get involved,” he said. With the high cost of driving instructors, the MRC is hoping to secure its own car so participants can practise their driving skills and rack up the 120 hours necessary to obtain their licence. “It’s a successful program, but a car would make things so much better.”

Farmers fear foodbowl future By Charlene Macaulay Werribee South farmers have expressed frustration about the ongoing struggles facing Melbourne’s foodbowl. The farmers, who have all asked not to be named, told Star Weekly they’re frustrated about receiving only a fraction of the water they’re paying for and the high salinity levels in the water that they do receive, which are leading to no crops or smaller than usual fruit and vegetables.
“We can’t survive with this recycled water as it is,” one farmer said. Added another farmer: “We’re poisoning our land.” Another key concern is the lack of space to expand their farms. Some have leased farming land in other parts of Werribee South to grow their businesses. But the farmers say they’re particularly frustrated that the government did not offer land from the former State Research Farm to allow them to expand.
“We’re the foodbowl, [but the government has] never, ever done anything in the last 50 years to help this district,” one farmer said. Said another: “We are not viable in Werribee South anymore. There’s no room for expansion here.” A spokeswoman for Southern Rural Water said Werribee South farmers had received only 20 per cent of their high-reliability water shares so far this season, “which is not uncommon for the start of the irrigation season”. She said many farmers also had access to
groundwater and recycled water, the latter of which had experienced increases in salinity in recent years. The spokeswoman said that the river water supplied was naturally salty due to the Werribee basin sitting on a bed of volcanic salt, but that overflow from the Melton Reservoir usually helped salinity levels to drop. “Unfortunately, the dry conditions have meant no fill and spill of the [Melton] reservoir this year,” she said. The state government did not respond to Star Weekly’s request for comment.
Top music line-up lands The Lost Lands festival, which will be held at Werribee Park later this year, has announced a musical line-up that will include Tim Finn, You Am I, Kate Miller-Heidke and Claire Bowditch. The annual festival, which includes music, art, installations, food, circus acts, comedy, wine and children’s entertainment, will be held on November 3 and 4. The event, described as a festival for the “whole family”, will also feature music from The Jungle Giants, The Tesky Brothers, Boo Seeka, All Our Exes Live In Texas, Baker Boy, Jess Locke and Amaru Tribe. Festival founder Simon Daly said organisers were also aiming for the event to become a single-use plastic bag free event by next year and were hoping to achieve a 95 per cent reduction in single-use plastic bag use this year. “The Lost Lands is an event focused on family and fun,” Mr Daly said. “With that comes a responsibility to pass on
environmentally-aware values and actions on to our young ones. “This move will set a benchmark for how festivals can run successfully, whilst minimising their footprint.” Recyclable waste bags will be supplied to campers. Mr Daly said organisers aimed to “inspire a celebration of creativity”. “It’s important that The Lost Lands supports and celebrates all forms of diversity in the music scene, ensuring the next generation of Australians are exposed to a variety of musical talent,” he said. MY WYNDHAM Dr Rafael Milone first came to Wyndham as a GP 41 years ago and liked it so much, he moved here. The 69-year-old sat down with Charlene Macaulay to talk about Werribee, his career, and his 70th birthday. What is your connection to Wyndham? I was born in Italy, near Naples. I came to Australia when I was six and I grew up in Queensland as a young boy. Then we moved to Victoria – mainly for my schooling, for university. I went to Melbourne University and we lived in Port Melbourne. Before coming to Werribee, I lived in Kooyong. Why did you want to be a GP?

My family [wanted me to]. In my day, you did six years university, and then became a GP. I did hospital training at Box Hill Hospital and Royal Melbourne, and a small stint in London. It was different; I think when you’re young you want to see the world. I bought myself a Kombi Van and drove around Europe. On weekends I used to go across the channel ‌ I’d go to see the Louvre, I’d go to Copenhagen or something like that. You’ve been running the Princes Highway Medical Centre for 41 years. How did you come to be in Werribee? I started a clinic in St Albans and I used to work weekends. This guy rocks up on a Sunday morning ‌ he had a brand-new Mercedes and he was a surgeon. He heard I spoke Italian and said ‘you should come to Werribee, there are a lot of Italians there’. So that’s when I came down here. He ended up being my son’s godfather after that – we became great friends. There are only two of us [at the clinic] now. There used to be more, but I don’t want to expand. I’m going to be 70 this year, I’m trying to cut down!
What made you move to the area? I got busy very quickly. I like Werribee because it’s a country town – when I came here, it was a just a country little hospital on Synnot Street with five GPs, and we ran it. I moved to Werribee in 1977. Any plans for your 70th birthday?
Do you know Rafael’s restaurant [in Werribee]? The owner says we have to do something, but I don’t want to. It’s not a good feeling, getting older. It didn’t hit home to me until recently. I went to Russia for the World Cup and on the way back I stopped in Dubai. There’s a building you go up to – it’s like Eureka – and there’s glass and you look down. I went to pay up ‌ and he said ‘we don’t charge old people’. This
guy picked me out as an old man! What are your hobbies outside of work? I used to do go-kart racing, but I haven’t done it for years. I like building stuff, because my father was a builder and I used to go to work with him. I like doing up houses.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir welcomes a new kid on the block Lucy Dinknesh is dead; long live Lucy Dinknesh. The much-loved Ethiopian stalwart of the Footscray eats scene has closed its doors. Doubtless that will leave a hole impossible to fill for its many fans. But House of Injera – at the same address – is giving it a good shake. Based on the mostly excellent food we eat during a mid-week visit – and the happy tables around us – House of Injera is destined to be a hit. But this is a rather different enterprise. It’s the first restaurant adventure for the team of Wes and Brod Jackson and Messe Berhe, with the latter (mum of Wes) doing all the cooking. The dining room is a rather chic delight, with low-fi lighting (but still bright enough to see our food), plain yet fetching wooden tables, cushions scattered around and Ethiopian art work adorning the walls. The pungent tang of incense and funky Ethiopian sounds – some even familiar to Bennie and I from my slim collection of Ethio music – are comfort-inducing in a swell way. The House Of Injera menu is a simple, well-written list featuring many dishes with which we are familiar. Though there are a few wrinkles along the way. One is the inclusion of kikel seg, the meat and vegetable soup we adore. My choice is soup, but I let Carnivore Boy Bennie bully me into ordering the lamb ribs. Our lamb ribs ($15) look the part and

Much better are the tibbs-style lamb cubes, onion, carrot and their juices on which the ribs are presented. We order the mistro combo at $20 each – and are knocked-out happy to find it includes a small bowl each of aforementioned kikel seg soup. It is excellent – and there’s a heap of on-the-bone meat submerged in our bowls. We think of it as the Ethiopian take on pho or Jewish penicillin/chicken soup. The rest of our mistro line-up includes wonderful renditions of khay wat, gomen sega and the familiar, always-welcome Ethio mix of beetroot and spuds. The meat in the beef stew that is khay wat is cooked down and easy to eat. The greens of gomen sega come with another wrinkle – more tender on-the-bone meat. We’re far from complaining, as there’s more food served to us than we can eat, but instead of five dishes as part of our mistro combo, we have been served four. No problem at all – and our bill is adjusted accordingly. House of Injera is warmly recommended by CTS.

In tune with a truly universal language The joy of song harnessed to the power of learning – that’s the Yangtze Choir. The choir – mostly made up of retired Chinese-Australians who want to learn or improve their English – has become a vibrant and inspirational community asset that will be a star feature of the Wyndham Learning Festival, which will run from September 1-8. Wyndham council neighbourhood hub team leader Pat Rayner says the choir will “sing anywhere”. When Pat first saw the Yangtze Choir, it moved her to tears. “They are truly a beautiful choir and I thought, ‘Let’s … make a program out of it,” she says. The Yangtze Choir works with renowned musician and accordionist George Butrumlis to facilitate a program called LET’s Sing. “We have a vision to bring together all walks of life – anyone who is looking for a community and maybe feeling isolated because of weak English skills,” Pat says. “Come along, make some friends and improve your English.” During the festival, the choir will be featuring on Thursday, September 6 at 10-11.30am. The LET’s Sing partnership with Jamieson Way Community Centre will continue the program from October 1 at Point Cook Community Learning Centre, with weekly classes to run for an hour and a half. “This lovely initiative stemmed organically from a genuine need. Every time they sing a song they feel a sense of community which is a really special thing to be able to be a part of,” Pat says. To get involved, call 9395 3777. As part of this program, the street trees and power-lines are inspected regularly to ensure no impact to power supply through conflict with trees. Bees roll out their best By Lance Jenkinson For 90 minutes on Saturday, Werribee City could forget about its recent struggles in National Premier League 2 west soccer. The smile returned to the dial of Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini, who took delight in his side’s return-to-form 4-1 win over Brunswick City at Galvin Park. “Much better this week … probably the best we’ve played all year,” he said. A frustrating question remains – why did this form elude the Bees against relegationthreatened teams in the previous month? While the Bees are still a mathematical chance of promotion, they are a long shot of finishing in the top two and miracles will be required. But Sabbadini was not going to let anything dampen his mood after watching his Bees produce at a level he thinks they will be able to deliver on a consistent basis next season. “We’re going in the right direction again, so that’s good,” he said. “I wish we were in control of our destiny, but it is what it is and we can’t alter that.” Werribee City was ruthless in attack against Brunswick City. Unlike the wastefulness of the week prior, the Bees took advantage of most of their opportunities against Brunswick. “We probably only had six or seven chances and we scored four of them,” Sabbadini said. “Whereas last week we had the same number of chances and didn’t score any of them.” Jake Butler set the tone for Werribee City. The New Zealand international scored goals early in the first and second halves to get the Bees rolling. Butler formed part of a three-pronged midfield with Brad Murray and Dion Paola that was nigh on unstoppable. “They basically controlled the game,” Sabbadini said. Trevor Ssemakula put Werribee City three goals up after 53 minutes. It was Ssemakula’s sixth goal of the campaign. Brunswick hit back through Stefan Ristict three minutes later, but it was too far behind to mount a serious challenge. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ I have always believed that the Coach of the Year title should go to the bloke who holds the cup up on grand final day, but that is not always the case as the announcement precedes that one day in September and, like the team of the year, is based on performances in the home and away season. Last year there was a very strong case for Brendan Hallinan of Sunshine to get the gong, especially with his team going within a whisker of premiership glory. Marc Bullen from Deer Park was named, and deserved it, with his team losing only two games during the regular season. This year I am glad not to be part of the panel making the choice because it is a very close call. With one game to go, the top four teams are separated by one loss: Altona (14-3),Hoppers Crossing (13-3-1), Werribee Districts (12-3-2) and Deer Park (13-4). Any one of the four coaches –Saade Ghazi, Steve Kretiuk, Chris Gilham and Marc Bullen – would be a deserving winner. ■ Sunshine’s Brendan Hallinan has announced he is standing down after this weekend. I wish him well and compliment him on a great job with the Kangaroos. This season has not gone according to plan after going so close in 2017. ‘Barney’ might be walking away without a cup, but he has left a mark at the club, which now knows it can win that elusive flag. If it can keep the core of its playing group and maintain that hard edge to its game, a bit of glory might not be far away. ■ Andre ‘The Giant” Meunier is not a household name in Australia but the four-time world kickboxing champion is big news in Asia, where he is one of the star performers on the One Championship circuit. While he hardly warrants a sideways glance walking through Pacific Werribee, where he first met James Roesler his manager and trainer, it is a different story in Asia where fans line up for selfies and autographs. Andre is in full training at the Ultimate Kickboxing Gym in Hoppers Crossing for his upcoming bout. Western Jets are ruing “the one that got away” in a six-point loss to Northern Knights in the TAC Cup at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Jets coach Torin Baker was disappointed with his team’s lack of composure when kicking with the wind in the final quarter. Trailing by 16 points at three-quarter time, the Jets had a big opportunity for a come-from-behind win as they had a howling wind at their back, but they could only manage 1.4 as they produced an error-riddled term that cost them the game. “The major aspect was probably our decision making and skill execution in the last quarter,” Baker said. “The wind really got strong in that last quarter, but there was an attacking side of the ground to use and we kicked to the dead side a bit. “You had to play smart and we didn’t play as smart as what we would’ve liked.” It was a costly loss for the Jets as it ended their chances of a top-four finish. Werribee is a ruthless bunch in the Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 2. The Tigers crushed bottom side CV Blazers 5-0 to seal their finals berth, but were left yearning for more. “It should’ve been a few more goals,” Tigers defender Ross Cowlishaw said. “We missed a stroke, probably hit the post about four times and then missed some open nets. “We definitely had a lot of chances.” Werribee’s mission for the day was accomplished though. The Tigers will be part of the finals action in September after making it eight wins out of their past 11. After a worrying 3-3 start to the season, the Tigers have been red hot ever since, but could not rest easy until their finals spot was booked. “It was good just to get the three points and then next week we can relax a bit more and prepare for finals as best as we can,” Cowlishaw said. “We didn’t have a good start to the season, so
it was good to get into the finals again. I think it’s our fourth year in a row we’ll play finals.” Werribee took a while for its dominance to show on the scoreboard. The Tigers led 1-0 at half-time before firing four in the second half. Sam Huxtable was the focal point of the attack with two goals, while Cowlishaw bobbed up with two and Michael Gallo added the other. Huxtable’s performance was a talking point after the game. While he fired in a double, Cowlishaw ribbed him on the drive home to Bendigo about the ones he missed. “If he has a bad day, it’s him scoring two goals, so that’s still pretty good,” Cowlishaw said. “He missed about eight goals today I think, so he could’ve had a really big day out. “I scored two and that’s a good day for me, whereas Sam scored two and everyone is like, ‘you could’ve got eight’, but that’s just the quality player that he is.” Werribee’s domination was largely due to its strength in the midfield.

Warriors beat the odds By Lance Jenkinson The fairytale is complete for Westbourne Grammarians in Victorian Amateur Football Association women’s division 3. Five months ago, even an extreme optimist would have given the first-season Warriors little chance of standing atop the premiership dais at season’s end. The Warriors did just that on Sunday, over-running Preston Bullants by 11 points in a gripping grand final at Trevor Barker Beach Oval. Even after the game was won and the premiership cup was hoisted, Warriors coach Emma Pawlowski was pinching herself to make sure it was all real. “Who would’ve believed it?” she said. “It’s pretty amazing. We still couldn’t believe it when we went back to celebrate at the club.” Westbourne had come from long odds to swoop on the premiership. The Warriors began with just eight players at the start of pre-season, but ended up with selection headaches as they got stronger and better by the week. The fast growth can be put down to a successful culture laid out from day
dot. Each new player that arrived enjoyed their time at the Sayers Road club. The word spread and the Warriors were able to build a list just in time to make an incredible run to the finals after starting the season 0-3. Just as with its season, Westbourne was a slow starter in the grand final. Kicking into the wind in the first quarter, the Warriors trailed by 10 points at quarter-time. It could have been more had it not been for Preston’s poor kicking for goal, which returned 1.4. “I was quite nervous,” Pawlowski said. “Their coach had my structure worked out very well and was pretty much playing our game against us.” Westbourne fought back to have its nose in front by a point at half-time. It, too, could also be accused of being wasteful in front of goal by kicking 1.5 – but at least it was game on. It was in the third quarter that the Warriors got the edge. They managed to kick the only goal recorded into the breeze through Kim Temuskos, while restricting Preston to just one goal with the wind. “We came out firing in that third quarter,” Pawlowski said. “We got a goal against the flow
and it was the only goal kicked at that end for the game.” The fourth quarter hung in the balance for the most part – until Westbourne produced a goal worthy of sealing a premiership win. Ruck Tess Abbott took the ball out of the ruck at half-back and pumped it long into her forward line, where youngster Brianna Herman somehow kept the ball in play. Herman bravely took on two Preston pursuers and eventually delivered the ball to Lauren Spark in the forward pocket. She kicked the match-winner from a tight angle. “It was just a miraculous goal,” Pawlowski said.“When that final siren happened, it was like a dream come true. It was pure happiness.” Victoria Pettit earned best-on-ground honours for Westbourne. Her intercept marking in defence and metres gained in transition were invaluable. Shannon Colgan’s head-over-the-ball approach was inspiring to her teammates, while Sam Radlof thrived on the contested ball, as she had all season. Spark’s two goals in tough conditions for scoring proved the difference between the teams.
City West Falcons timed their run for Victorian Netball League championship division finals to perfection. With a win in their final match of the season enough to guarantee a finals spot, the Falcons had everything on the line against the DC North East Blaze on Wednesday night. The Blaze faced the same scenario, making the match a virtual elimination. Although the Falcons led at every break they couldn’t break the game open, with the result decided in the final few minutes. The Falcons held their composure to win 60-57. Falcons coach Marg Lind said it was a period in the third quarter that proved to be the difference. “It was a quality game and finals worthy,” she said. “It was a five minute period in the third quarter, we were letting the ball go a bit quicker and we got a run on. “They made a lot of changes and we had a bit more confidence to get out to a six goal buffer. “They came back at us … The last three to four minutes we were able to steady.” Lind said while they were a young side, several players had played together for a number of years and that counted late in the game. Lind praised the efforts of goal attack Tahnysha Salanoa “T is a young goaler and she was able to hold her own under a lot of pressure,” Lind said. “She was able to keep her head up. They threw everything at her.” While finals are normally a pass mark for the Falcons, this year is different according to Lind. The Falcons only got their best line-up on court six weeks ago and have been able to rise up the ladder to finish third. “We’re really happy to get a team in finals with the year that we’ve had,” Lind said. “Anything else is a bonus. The Falcons play the Hawks in an elimination final on Wednesday night. The winner will play in a preliminary final on Sunday. When the two sides played each other in round 16 the Falcons came out on top, but the Hawks were without star shooter Kim Commane. The Falcons under-19 side suffered a heartbreaking 56-55 loss. Big victory has Glen Orden buzzing Glen Orden may just avoid the wooden spoon in its first season back in Western Region Football League division 3. Given where the Hawks were 12 months ago, that would be considered a significant achievement. Last season, the Hawks made the gut-wrenching decision to withdraw from the competition as player numbers plummeted. With Phil Crea at the helm, the Hawks revived the team for 2018 in what has proven to be a brave, but successful, decision. Glen Orden has been competitive in most games this season. The Hawks began the season with a 0-9 run, but there were a lot of close losses in that lot. Crea told Star Weekly at the mid-point of the season that he forecast not only a first win in the second half of the season, but multiple wins.
Tigers look dangerous
Werribee Centrals have suffered final-round heartbreak in the Geelong and District Football League Smiths Holden Cup. Centurion finals dreams went up in smoke with a 46-point loss to Bannockburn at Victoria Park on Saturday. To make matters worse, Centurions key forward Luke Cachia suffered a serious leg injury that forced a halt to play while paramedics attended to him. Werribee Centrals needed only to win to play finals, but Bannockburn leap-frogged them into fifth. The Centurions managed just three goals on a tough day. Nick Smith’s team finished the season with a 10-7-1 record – a significant improvement on the five wins achieved a season ago. In Victorian Amateur Football Association division 3, Westbourne Grammarians looked impressive in their pre-finals tune-up. The Warriors had it all their own way in a 95-point win over Albert Park at Beaurepaire Pavilion. Westbourne will lock horns with Aquinas in a cut-throat semi-final at Garvey Oval on Saturday. Meanwhile, John Lamont will coach his last game for Werribee in the Victorian Football League this weekend. Werribee will face Lamont’s former club, North Melbourne, in a 1pm Saturday game at Avalon Airport Oval.

“There’s no doubt about it, it’s been a real positive second half of the year,” Crea said. “I couldn’t be prouder of the boys, especially after today.” Soni Rainbow put a tough campaign behind him with a best-on-ground showing for Glen Orden in the win. The centre half-forward is tipped to be a key player for the Hawks going forward. Jack Burgess continued his cracking second half of the season with a strong performance in the midfield. Kur Kur excited with his run and carry and ability to break the lines, while captain Jack Stoddart enhanced his reputation as a leader. Crea is hoping Glen Orden can round out the season with another win when it travels to Laverton on Saturday. “It would be a great way to finish off the year to have a win, but as a club I think we’ve already won by fielding two sides, seeing the year out and not getting smashed,” he said.
Werribee Districts upped the ante at the coalface to knock Deer Park off top spot in a 22-point win in the Western Region Football League division 1 at Soldiers Reserve on Saturday. It keeps the Tigers in the running for a double chance heading into the final round and ends Deer Park’s push for an incredible sixth consecutive minor premiership. Tigers coach Chris Gilham saw the belief in his team grow on the back of the victory. “It’s a huge win for our footy club to beat such a powerhouse in Deer Park,” Gilham said. “To do it in such a big game, us going for a top-three spot and them going for top spot, there was heaps on the line and to get a result was massive. “It’s massive for our confidence.” Of all the teams locked in for September, it just felt like Werribee Districts was the one with the biggest point to prove. Maybe it was because the Tigers had struggled to put away some of the also-rans until late in matches, which meant they did not have the sky-high percentage of the other sides in the finals. Their big scalps, however, stack up with the best of them. “We’ve beaten Deer Park now, we’ve beaten Altona, Hoppers Crossing, so we’ve beaten all the other teams in the top four,” Gilham said. “It gives us belief that our best is good enough, we’re not making the numbers up. “If we get the job done against Spotty [in the final round], we’re a chance of finishing in the top three and getting a double chance and having a crack at it.” The Werribee Districts midfield was at its pressuring best on Saturday, forcing Deer Park into errors. The Tigers had to win the clearance battle due to Deer Park’s plethora of stars forward of centre. “I just thought our pressure around the ball was massive,” Gilham said. “We’re playing a team that has got a huge forward line, so if they get quality ball through the middle, they’re just going to open you up. “Our pressure, our tackle count and our ability to stick tackles against some big powerful boys was first class.” The Tigers held Deer Park to 40 points –albeit with a bit of help from the Lions, who kicked a wayward 4.16, though Werribee Districts’ return of 8.14 was not much better. Each time Deer Park got a run on, Werribee Districts had all the answers. “It was everyone contributing to the defence, an old-fashioned team effort,” Gilham said. “Deer Park were fantastic too, they kept coming and would have their 10-15 minutes of dominance and then we’d fight back.

“To our credit, we hung in there while we were under the pump and got the win.” Chris Molivas and Mark Pozzuto were Werribee Districts only multiple goalkickers with two each. Molivas was the Tigers most dangerous forward, while Pozzuto’s work in the midfield was superb. Shaun McGuinness did a fine job on Deer Park danger man Jase Perkins, while Nathan Black was always willing to put his body in front of a pack for an intercept mark.
Matt Dean put his head over the ball in his typical fashion. If Werribee Districts can beat Spotswood on Saturday, they will need Hoppers Crossing or Deer Park to lose to finish in the top three, which comes with the finals double chance. Hoppers Crossing, which moved up to second with a 134-point win over Albion, will battle with ladder leader Altona at J.K. Grant Reserve on Saturday for the right to the minor premiership and bye in week one of the finals.

Honda Odyssey has been on sale in Australia since 1995 when the people mover was the vehicle of choice for those needing to transport more than five. For most of that period it’s been a three-way tussle between Odyssey, Toyota Tarago and Kia Carnival, although the SUV phenomenon has taken many sales away from the segment. Honda made a bit of a gamble in its third and fourth generation model by lowering Odyssey’s height to make it look and perform more like a station wagon, but with the arrival of the gen-five model in 2014 it reverted to its previous height of just under 1.7 metres. The MY2018 Odyssey gave it an external facelift, an upgraded interior and improved driver assist technology.

Styling
Two variants are offered, VTi and VTi-L, with the L standing for luxury rather than a long wheelbase as used elsewhere. VTi now has the aero front fascia design that was previously only available with higher spec VTi-L. It also has bright chrome surrounds for the new front foglights. Two new paint colours have also been introduced for the MY18 Odyssey – Cobalt Blue Pearlescent and Platinum White Pearlescent.
Interior
Odyssey VTi comes with eight seats while the more luxurious VTi-L has seven. The latter features twin buckets in place of the second-row bench in the VTi. The dashboard-mounted gearshift together with a pull-out storage tray and drink holders opens up the space between the front seats sufficiently to allow access to rear rows of seats.

Engine / transmission
There is only one powertrain – a 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol unit with peak power of 129 kW and top torque of 225 Nm at 4000 rpm. It drives through the front wheels using the greater efficiency of continuously variable transmission (CVT). Fuel consumption is listed at 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres; at 8.2 litres per
100 kilometres, we came reasonably close to during our test. These are impressive figures for a big seven-seater.
Safety
Active safety features (crash prevention) in the Odyssey VTi include ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution; emergency stop signal; stability and traction control; hill start assist; daytime running lights; and tyre deflation warning.
With its large glass areas all round Odyssey has a lovely airy feel inside and provides outstanding exterior visibility. Around town it behaves in a surprisingly sprightly manner; it cruises effortlessly on the motorway. The suspension generally copes well, but rough roads can cause it hassles at times. Handling really isn’t the reason for choosing a people mover, but Odyssey is safe and sure at higher than normal cornering speeds.
Summing up
In this era of crossover vehicles that attempt to be jacks of all trades, it’s nice to review a vehicle that has one clearly defined purpose – to provide spacious, comfortable and economical transport for more than five occupants. Although not necessarily the market leader in sales Honda Odyssey has long been the queen of its class; the MY18 update sees it remain so.

Upgrades ascent for Everest By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Ford has announced major upgrades for its big 2019 Everest SUV, with a stylish facelift, added equipment, new fuel-efficient powertrains and optional Driver Assist Technology (DAT), the latter including Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). Just as important in today’s hotly contested SUV market, the Everest has a warranty of five years with no distance limit. Ford Everest is sold in five and seven-seat variants and offers the choice of two or four-wheel drive.
