Grand plans for zoo By Charlene Macaulay Werribee Open Range Zoo has unveiled plans for an $83.5 million expansion to capitalise on Wyndham’s burgeoning tourism precinct. The proposed expansion, which is expected to be rolled out in several stages up until 2024, will focus on providing immersive experiences for visitors and, if funded, will feature a mammoth 20-hectare elephant sanctuary that will house the elephants currently residing at Melbourne Zoo, in addition to the elephants already on site. Other hallmarks of the project include: • An expanded Rhino Retreat that will allow keepers to breed on-site and give visitors the chance to meet Rhinos up close; • A new on-foot safari experience that connects all the different animal regions and will include a low-level suspension bridge and treetop suspension bridge towering 10 metres above the Werribee River; • A high-wire gondola to connect trails on both sides of the river and give visitors unique views of the zoo grounds; • An extension adjacent to the African savannah that will provide an open landscape for American bison and a mixed collection of northern hemisphere animals; • A bigger Woodlands safari adventure, with one of the world’s biggest meerkat exhibits for visitors to watch while they’re waiting for their safari bus; • Enlarging the existing lion habitats to fit two lion prides, which visitors will be able to see both on foot and through the bus safari; and • A Watering Hole focused specifically on breeding for two endangered species (cheetahs and African wild dogs) and a section that includes a 5000-person lawn with a re-oriented stage for events and cafe. The master plan roll-out – which would take the zoo’s footprint from less than half of its 250-hectare site to about 80 per cent – is largely dependent on state government funding, with the government allocating $1 million for planning to date. Zoo director Glen Holland said the expansion plan will mean increased visitation and tourism, which in turn would help boost the zoo’s conservation efforts. It would also allow the zoo to double its existing staff of about 170. The zoo’s visitor numbers have doubled in the past five years to 600,000 visitors each financial year. Of that, 21 per cent of visitors are Wyndham residents, more than 50 per cent are from Victoria, six per cent are interstate and two per cent are international.

“The challenge is, if the [visitor numbers] double again, we don’t have the footprint, we don’t have new experiences … we have to expand, we have the space. We’re the number one tourism destination in the west and so all of this combined just says you’ve got to expand. “In terms of the future, it’s about how we use the 250 hectares and move from two key experiences – the walking safari and the bus –
and head towards five or six of those to utilise the site, to spread the capacity and ensure our visitors are getting the best day out. “Our brand is very much about open range, and the theming is largely African. It’s about herds, mobs, flocks – numbers of animals, instead of two of this and two of that – on large, open expanses.” The master plan is one part of an overall
shake-up of zoo operations, with the zoo also set to introduce an immersive “Sunset Safari” experience from November that will give visitors a traditional night-time African safari experience and focus on African food, culture, and an evening animal safari. Meanwhile, the zoo is currently expanding on its Australia wildlife offer to ensure that visitors get to see kangaroos and koalas.

Two children die after crash By Alesha Capone Two children have died as the result of a collision in Truganina on Saturday. A 10-year-old girl died at the scene, after a Ford Territory travelling along Hopkins Road allegedly overtook another car and collided head-on with a Ford Focus about midnight. The Territory then allegedly collided with the car it overtook, a Honda SUV. A man and woman and two children, including the girl who died, were travelling
in the Ford Focus. A four-year-old boy from that vehicle was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and died in hospital on Monday evening. The female driver remains in a critical condition while the male passenger has been released from hospital. The driver of the Ford Territory was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The 41-year-old man from Rockbank was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Five occupants in the Honda SUV were not
injured. Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the incident. The driver of the Ford Territory remains in hospital and is yet to be interviewed. Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

YouTube youths put lives at risk as “No unauthorised access beyond this point”. In January this year, the same youth posted videos of himself and others sneaking onto the roof of a Hoppers Crossing shopping centre and into a restricted area near a Hoppers Crossing bridge. In another recording, they climb the fence of a school and clamber onto its gymnasium’s roof. Wyndham Police Inspector Marty Allison said that in “copycatting” other rooftoppers, the teens were putting themselves in danger. “I think they’re placing themselves at unnecessary risk – the first concern is around their own safety and … by extension, other members of the public,” Inspector Allison said. “They are entering into places they have no lawful excuse to be in and committing offences as a secondary consideration to this.”

Police have condemned the daredevil antics of a group of youths who have filmed themselves “rooftopping” at locations across Wyndham. The worldwide trend of “rooftopping” involves people gaining access – often illegally – to locations such as high rooftops and cranes, in order to record both the views and their own risky behavior. Many rooftoppers post their videos and photos onto social media. Some teenagers in Wyndham have followed suit, putting several videos of their pranks on YouTube. One video, posted in March this year, shows a young male scaling a fence, which is topped with barbed wire, to access the Pacific Werribee Shopping Centre rooftop. The footage, which has received hundreds of views, shows the youth climb over a gate which is clearly signed
Police helped save three people and a dog from a house fire in Werribee on Tuesday. Detectives from the Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit were on patrol when they saw flames coming from the window of a house in Fisher Court, just after midnight. Police helped two men, a woman and their dog to leave the property. A 49-year-old man sustained non-life threatening burns to his face and was taken to hospital, along with a 48-year-old man, for observation. A 46-year-old woman and the dog were not injured. The fire caused extensive damage to the property and is being treated as non-suspicious. Police said fire investigators would attend the scene on Wednesday to determine the cause. In a separate incident, MFB crews were called to a fire at a unit in Woods Street, Laverton just after 1am on July 6. The sole male occupant of the house was evacuated to safety, but his pet dog remains unaccounted for. The blaze was brought under control in 30 minutes, but the unit was severely damaged. The fire has been deemed suspicious and Victoria Police will investigate. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police super station on the way By Alesha Capone The $45 million Wyndham Police Complex, which is set to replace the Werribee police station, is a step closer with the naming of a project team to spearhead its development. Once built, the complex – which will accommodate about 550 police members, support staff and employees from partner agencies – will be the largest Victoria Police facility outside Melbourne CBD. Victoria Police on Tuesday announced
design consultancy Architectus had been appointed to lead the design of the complex. Engineering and professional technical services firm Meinhardt will deliver engineering services for the complex, while cost and project consultancy Donald Cant Watts Corke has been appointed as project manager. Tuesday’s statement said “detailed planning� for the new complex was under way, with construction expected to start mid-2019 and be completed by the end of 2020.
The complex will be part of the broader Wyndham Justice Precinct, which is being developed as part of the Werribee National Employment and Innovation Cluster. The precinct, once complete, will provide integrated justice services for the Wyndham area, with policing, court services, corrections and health and council services located within close proximity of each other. Tuesday’s statement said 42 new police would hit the beat in the Westgate division (which covers the Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and
Maribyrnong municipalities) by June next year, including 12 frontline police for Wyndham and additional specialist family violence and criminal investigation officers. Police Minister Lisa Neville said the Wyndham Police Complex was “critical to support our record boost to police numbers to keep our community safe�. “Our police deserve the best facilities and we are delivering a state-of-the art police station for our officers and the residents of Wyndham,� Ms Neville said.
Animal magnetism A passion for animals and the environment drives Hoppers Crossing girl Alanah to help all creatures great and small. For her 10th birthday, instead of presents, Alanah asked her family and friends to donate items such as food, bedding, toys and money to Puppy Tales Rescue and Rehoming, a non-profit organisation located near Bacchus Marsh. Alanah – who is now 11 years old – even used the birthday money her parents gave her to buy additional items for Puppy Tales. “I’ve always loved animals, it’s something that’s always been there,� Alanah said. Back in 2016, she adopted a Jack Russell-Maltese cross, named Lacey, from Puppy Tales, and has also adopted two cats, Sam and Louie. In May, she volunteered at the Dog Lovers Show to raise awareness of Puppy Tales’ work. And earlier this year attended the World Wildlife Day Melbourne Crush to protest
against animals being killed for their tusks and horns. Fittingly, Alanah is an environmental leader at her school, St Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School in Tarneit. Her fellow students and teachers selected her for the position, which involves helping to organise special environmental events, caring for the school’s chickens and planting programs. “I just like the fact that it’s raising awareness for certain things,� Alanah said. The active youngster is also in her school choir and a drama club, is a keen horserider and a budding photographer. Protest vote over tree removal By Alesha Capone
Elle drives a new note Werribee singer ALLIPHA – aka Elle Murphy – says the inspiration for her new single, Minds On Fire, came to her while she was driving. She said she was in her car listening to an Anderson Paak record, when its ‘groovy vibe’ caused her to think of the first part of Minds On Fire. “I had to turn the radio off, because the tune of Minds On Fire came into my head and I wanted to record it straight away,” she said. She pulled over and recorded some of the song on her mobile. Werribee music producer James Freeman was also involved in writing the song. Murphy released Minds On Fire last month, along with a live video of her singing it with her band and an animated lyric video. She said she was delighted when the song reached number five on Triple J’s weekly Unearthed chart. Murphy said she used ALLIPHA, which derives from a high school nickname, as an artistic moniker for original music projects, such as her latest track. Aside from performing and writing music, she also teaches singing at the Coach Music Academy in Werribee. “I think it’s an equal love of mine, with writing my own music,” she said.

A Wyndham councillor has slammed the removal of two historic trees to make way for a road extension near the Riverwalk Estate at Werribee. Cr Mia Shaw spoke out against the removal of the two Monterey Cypress trees, which are believed to have been planted during the 1920s as part of the Calder Memorial Avenue, in memory of William Calder, the first chairman of the Country Roads Board. The trees, which are located within the Geelong Road/Princes Highway road reserve opposite a T-intersection on Alfred Road, will be removed due to the proposed extension of the road, while three other trees at the site will be retained. The Riverwalk Estate developers, Development Victoria, do not require a permit to remove the two Monterey Cypress trees, which are considered non-native, being South Australian, rather than native to Victoria. The details of the trees’ removal were included in a planning permit application, seeking permission for a residential subdivision as part of the Riverwalk Estate, considered by the council last week. Cr Shaw said she believed the proposed subdivision would “result in a significant loss of amenity in this significant gateway to our city”. Cr Shaw said that she was “deeply concerned” about loss of the heritage trees, one of which has already been removed. Although Cr Shaw, Cr Tony Hooper and mayor Peter Maynard voted against the Riverwalk subdivision proposal, it was passed by the other councillors present. In March, many Wyndham residents protested against the removal of 200 trees along Farm Road.

Kevin Hillier hopes lessons can be learned from mistakes
W
e all make mistakes in life and there is no doubt it is sometimes very difficult to admit it, cop your punishment, and move on. Social media has made that process even more difficult, because every man and his dog and his keyboard wants not only to administer a kick up the bum, but demands a personal apology, even if the transgression did not affect them in the slightest. We have a new order that thrives in the arena of being outraged about everything and everybody. I envy only their energy. The socially active public have become less forgiving and more militant in calling for people to be sacked. I can personally vouch for that. There are genuine sackable offences but instant dismissal – which used to be threatened in the old days before multiple warnings and letters – is rarely used. Two recent examples are Barry Hall and Don Nardella. Disgraced Melton MP Nardella has repaid the almost $100,000 he claimed in residential expenses. He was basically forced to do so after
the public reaction to his dealings. He was not sacked and still says he did nothing wrong, claiming he was acting within the rules. He did not make a mistake, he did not do anything illegal, but he did do the wrong thing. He gets no sympathy when he says it has been a financial burden using most of his wage to pay back the money. Barry Hall did make a mistake. He did not set out to intentionally offend everybody when he sat behind the microphone two Fridays ago, but he did. He is guilty of many things (disrespecting women perhaps, being out of touch with moral standards, the list goes on) and he has lost that job, probably forever. Is that fair? Like Nardella, he didn’t do anything illegal, but he did do the wrong thing. Time heals most wounds in life, and we learn from our mistakes, hopefully. Some good might come from Barry’s indiscretion in changing that testosterone-driven locker room mentality. We might also attract future politicians who adhere to the moral rules as well as the legal ones. We live in hope. â–

Wyndham’s wish list tops $6m By Alesha Capone Wyndham council will ask the state government for $6.12 million to help fund eight projects across the municipality, including redeveloping the former Glen Devon school site in Werribee into a temporary park. The council last week released the list of projects it will ask the state government to help fund through the Growing Suburbs Fund’s 2018-19 allocation round, which will give $50 million in infrastructure assistance to Melbourne’s fastest growing municipalities. The council’s list included a request for
$870,000 to transform the Glen Devon land on Market Road into a “temporary park” with tree planting, paths and lawn areas. Cr Mia Shaw said the site had been vacant for “a very long time”. “Something needs to be done for it, and in that local community area, I think re-activating that site is going to be very important,” she said. The state government is determining the future use of the Glen Devon site, which is owned by the Department of Education and Training. In January, Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the Minister for Education had informed him that
the site might be retained for “possible future educational provision”. As part of its submission to the Growing Suburbs Fund, Wyndham council also requested $1.5 million to buy a Street Surfer Bus, to deliver youth services in the municipality. Cr Josh Gilligan said the bus was needed because of Wyndham’s booming population. The council also asked for: • $1 million to help provide more community meeting space at The Grange Community Centre in Hoppers Crossing. The council will put $1.7 million towards the project; • Funding of $1 million to redevelop the

Taylor takes time to help Even children can make the world a better place – just ask 11-year-old Hoppers Crossing resident Taylor, who has a passion for helping homeless people. On Friday nights, Taylor helps out at The Salvation Army Wyndham City’s mobile kitchen, which provides free meals at the Werribee train station. “I just like making people happy, such as helping people who are poor be able to eat a meal,” Taylor said. Taylor, who is in grade 5, said his desire to help homeless people was born when he saw a movie about people stranded beside a road. “Then, the next time I went to the city, I saw a homeless person and I wanted to help them,” he said. While on a family holiday in the United States last year, Taylor saw many people living on the streets, and would ask his mother to buy them
meals. One deaf man he gave food to signed “thank you”, which Taylor’s grandmother – who understands sign language – translated for him. Taylor said that he also loved archery, taking part in the Relay for Life and helping animals. He said that he would like to work with animals, with homeless people or as a policeman with a sniffer dog when he grows up. A desire to help others runs in Taylor’s family – his mother, Julie Toner, was named Wyndham’s Citizen of the Year in 2016, in recognition of her extensive fundraising and volunteer work. Petrol stations under the pump By Alesha Capone Bowser bandits committed 160 fuel thefts in Wyndham between April last year and March this year, according to data from the Crime Statistics Agency. This compares to 145 fuel thefts recorded by Wyndham police during the previous 12 months. The statistics included petrol, diesel and LPG gas thefts at locations across Wyndham, including 24-hour convenience stores, service stations and other retail outlets.
Within the April 2017 to March 2018 timeframe, Little River notched up the highest number of fuel thefts in the municipality with 49 individual offences, followed by Laverton North with 36 thefts. There was also 16 fuel thefts in Hoppers Crossing, 15 in Wyndham Vale, 15 in Truganina, 13 in Werribee and 12 in Tarneit. There were just four petrol thefts in Point Cook, and none reported in Williams Landing, Laverton or Sanctuary Lakes. Between January and December last year, Victoria Police received 5500 reports of petrol
drive-offs across the state. Last month, VicRoads announced it would launch a trial program to help crack down on petrol drive-offs. CCTV cameras will be installed at locations such as fuel outlets and shopping centres, to help catch motorists who do not pay for fuel or boomgate tolls. The cameras will scan the vehicle’s number plates and upload them to a database for approved users to access. A Victoria Police spokeswoman said CCTV was “a very important tool used by police when
investigating crime”. “Local police work closely with industry stakeholders in relation to crime prevention,” she said. The spokeswoman said petrol station owners and employees should report the theft of petrol, or any suspicious behavior, to local police. “Even if an offence has not occurred, any information provided could be vital to a broader investigation,” she said. Anyone with information about fuel thefts can contact local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Clean up a shore thing A group of volunteers who clean up rubbish at the Werribee South beach are celebrating their third anniversary. The 3030 Beach Patrol, which regularly cleans up areas including Campbells Cove and the K Road cliffs, started in 2015. Within this time, the group – which meets every fortnight – has removed thousands of kilograms of litter from Wyndham’s outdoors. During one weekend last month, the Beach Patrol team collected 2000 cigarettes, two tyres and 193 bottles and cans. After each clean-up, the volunteers gather for a barbecue lunch cooked by volunteers from the local Indian community, often the Australian India Foundation Incorporated. On Saturday, the Beach Patrol team hosted a marquee in Station Place, Werribee, to mark the group’s birthday. During the event, the patrol invited residents to sign a petition calling for the state
government to introduce a container deposit scheme in Victoria. The Beach Patrol also displayed a three-metre long “big bottle” from the Boomerang Alliance, an Australian not-for-profit group working to reduce marine plastic pollution. The big bottle tours around the state, to help raise awareness of the impact which rubbish has on the ocean environment and the importance of container deposit schemes. Leading by example A Victoria Police partnership is cultivating Wyndham’s up-and-coming leaders. The six-week Wyndham Future Leaders pilot program, which was run in tandem with Leadership Victoria, has involved empowering and training a culturally diverse group of young people by giving them communication, leadership and networking skills. Acting Senior Sergeant Tim Jacobs from Wyndham North police station said the 15 youths who took part were selected based on recommendations. “These kids are already leaders in their own right, but [this program] just gives them that leg up, and that voice,” he said. “We have youth from culturally diverse backgrounds in our community who understand what cultural exclusion means and they are motivated to use
this experience to make their local area an even better place to live.” Leadership Victoria chief executive Richard Dent added: “We run about 60 programs every year and I have to say this one is my favourite because of the difference it’s going to make”. Participant Affy Akuey said the experience had made her keen to develop after-school programs for young people. The 21-year-old Tarneit resident is studying a bachelor of nursing and manages a social enterprise, Twich Sewing Collective, which makes and sells clothes and bags, with profits helping the South Sudanese community. The Future Leaders program will be reviewed for future funding.

Project goes cap in hand By Charlene Macaulay A unique community project is giving amputees a helping hand. In what is believed to be a world first, not-for-profit charity Envision has paired up with Rotary to deliver the Helping Hands project, which turns recycled plastic bottle caps into prosthetic hands and arms. Using a $300 3D printer and a handmade machine that turns bottle caps into filament, the team can custom-make a hand that allows the wearer to undertake basic tasks such as picking up a cup or holding a fork. The team is keen to create 100 of these prosthetic limbs for kids in disadvantaged communities throughout Cambodia and other Third World countries – but first, they need people to donate as many plastic bottle caps as they can. The project is using an $18,000 Wyndham council grant to get schools involved in the project, with six already signed up. The team is also hoping to get funding through the state government’s pick my project initiative, which will allow them to buy a higher-quality 3D printer and other supplies. Joe Ferlazzo, who helped develop the prototype, said it was a cheap, simple concept that could change somebody’s life. Mr Ferlazzo said it took about 500 grams worth of recycled bottle caps, and 40 hours of work, to create one hand. “It’s so important for a child or adult to feel complete, and this does that,” he said. Courts knock back worship and yoga plans Both the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the Supreme Court have reaffirmed a Wyndham council decision to refuse a permit to establish a place of worship in Little River. In July 2016, the Datta Yoga Centre Australia applied for a permit to use and develop land at 33-49 McLeans Road – which is located in a Green Wedge Zone – for a place of worship, including an outbuilding to be used for yoga and the construction of an 18-vehicle carpark. The council refused the permit on the basis that it was contrary to several clauses in the Wyndham Planning Scheme. The yoga centre sought a review of the council’s refusal at VCAT last September, but was unsuccessful. VCAT stated that developing the proposed place of worship would be “unduly intensive” for the Little River location. The yoga centre took its fight to the Supreme Court last month, where Justice Greg Garde denied the centre permission to appeal the VCAT decision. Justice Garde said there was “no proposed ground of appeal for which there is a real or substantial argument to be put that error on a question of law exists”. Alesha Capone

Power to the people By Shelby Brooks Eighteen young people from Wyndham have had their voices heard at the YMCA Youth Parliament of Victoria, advocating for issues that mattered to them. Youth Parliament welcomed students from Hoppers Crossing Secondary College, Westbourne Grammar School and Tarneit Senior College, making the City of Wyndham the most represented area in the program. The program offers young people aged between 16 and 25 the opportunity to present and debate bills in Parliament House. Since 1987, the program has seen more than 25 of the proposed bills become Victorian legislation. Hoppers Crossing participant Harley Lewis was excited that his area had so many young people participating. “I think it’s great that young people from Wyndham have the opportunity to voice their opinions as we’re a diverse community with a range of different views and I think that really shows here,” he said. Mr Lewis described his team’s Sex and Gender Education Bill as a “matter of public safety”, hoping a more inclusive sexuality education program that covers a diverse range of sexualities and genders would fill obvious gaps in the current school curriculum. The bill was passed in the Legislative Assembly. “I hope this bill sends a clear message to politicians about what young people want in terms of sex and gender education,” fellow participant Jagveer Singh said. Tarneit Senior College team member, Rawane Oliverira, values that the program gives young people a chance to be heard at the highest levels of state government. “We stand before Parliament today, to represent our generation,” she said.

Hooper wants your opinions A Wyndham councillor is keen to throw his hat in the ring for this year’s state election – but first, he wants to hear residents’ views before making a decision. Harrison ward councillor Tony Hooper, who was elected to his first term of council at the November 2016 election, is launching an online survey to find out what issues locals would like him to advocate on if he decides to stand as an independent candidate for the seat of Altona. The seat is currently held by Labor MP Jill Hennessy. The former Point Cook Action Group president said he had been approached by many people to stand. Cr Hooper said residents were concerned that politicians were too busy playing political games to focus on local needs, and believed an independent MP would help the seat get more local funding and services. “We need local outcomes that answer the issues of our region, not political point scoring. We need politicians that know the communities they supposedly represent. “I am genuinely undecided on whether I will stand, and I have an open mind as to what residents will tell me.” Cr Hooper said the survey would remain online for four weeks and he would subsequently publish the survey’s findings. Talking trash at expo Making your home environmentally-friendly is easier than you think – and it can save you money. That’s the word from the Shoestring Gardening group, which is hosting an Eco Expo on July 28 that will provide locals with tips on how to reduce their energy costs and waste. A number of community groups will be showcasing their wares – including boomerang bags and bees wax wraps – and offering help on composting, solar power and gardening. A Wyndham councillor’s suggestion that the former Bridge Hotel site in Werribee should be dismantled and sold off has been shot down by the area’s other councillors. Cr Intaj Khan made the suggestion during a meeting last week, while the council debated a report into offering a 40-year (20+20) lease of the site to a hospitality, food and beverage business operator. Cr Khan said he believed that instead of the lease, the council should “dismantle” the hotel, sell it and “use the money for something else”. “I believe we can get a good price for the site,” he said. Cr Heather Marcus stepped out of the council chambers due to a conflict of interest but all the remaining councillors voted in favour of leasing the site to a food and beverage operator for four decades.

Cr Tony Hooper said that in doing so, the council would ensure the retention of the art deco hotel, which was built in the 1920s. The council purchased the heritage-listed Watton Street building in 2016, as part of plans to rejuvenate Werribee’s town centre. It ran an expressions of interest process last year seeking to lease the site for 15 years, but a council report tabled last week said many businesses had provided feedback that a 15-year lease was not long enough to justify the capital investment required in the building. A second expression of interest process was conducted, offering a 40-year (20+20) lease. Making passion count by taking care of business Dallian D’Cruz wants to share the keys to building and sustaining a not-for-profit enterprise. Dallian has been chief executive of Wyndham and Hobsons Bay Local Learning Employment Network (WynBay LLEN) for ten years and is passionate about what the network has achieved. With a focus on brokering relationships between decision-makers in the secondary, post-compulsory education sector, business, governments and agencies – he is on a mission to make sure young people in the west achieve their dreams and become successful. A big part of that is helping create opportunities in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay for disadvantaged young people. “Aside from being really passionate about what you do, you can’t be all things to all people, so you must be clear about the help you want to provide and not get lost or spread yourself too thin,” Dallian says. “We broker partnerships to create opportunities. We lobby governments, both state and federal; we bring organisations together to enable and facilitate change. You need to be able to articulate clearly what you want to achieve.” WynBay LLEN as an advocacy group has affected more than $25 million in investment by what Dallian describes as “facilitating and leveraging through a relationships-and-partnerships approach”. “We are an incorporated association of stakeholders representing business and industry, community organisations, education providers, local government and, of course, parents and families,” he says. “And although we are dealing with large companies and government agencies, our office is small (six employees) and our budget is tight, so we must always maximise every dollar.

Mayoral Column Council recently voted for me to write to the Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs advocating that they reverse funding cuts to the Status Resolution Support Service that affect the basic living allowance, casework support and access to torture and trauma counselling for approved asylum seekers. I intend to highlight the impacts on Wyndham residents and re-assert our support for a fair go for people who need a hand up while they get on their feet. We will join an alliance of 100 community organisations and other Councils who’ve all rallied around this issue. With 300 locals from asylum seeker backgrounds living here, Council’s fear is that the impacts on families and friends will be harsh. Anything that erodes our local diversity and humanity cannot be ignored, as turning a blind eye makes our community less safe and connected. While we spend most of our lot of time delivering much needed infrastructure and services, Council also has an obligation to advocate for local residents in need because it’s what leaders do and it’s a core Local Government Act responsibility. MP calls for Mercy MRI By Charlene Macaulay A federal MP is campaigning to get an MRI for Werribee Mercy Hospital. Lalor MP Joanne Ryan has launched an online petition calling for the hospital to receive a full-rebate MRI licence and is aiming to get 1000 signatures. Ms Ryan said as an area experiencing sustained and rapid growth, Wyndham was in desperate need of an MRI licence to deliver Medicare-subsidised scans to patients. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) produces high resolution images of the human
body and helps identify medical issues that cannot be picked up on X-rays or ultrasounds, such as those concerning organs and muscles. Currently, Wyndham residents can access an MRI at MIA Wyndham Radiology, which is based at the Wyndham Private Medical Centre in Hoppers Lane, but may incur considerable costs to do so. Wyndham residents relying on the public health system have to travel to either Geelong, Sunshine or Melbourne’s CBD to access a Medicare-subsidised MRI machine. Ms Ryan said some people had put off getting a scan because they could not afford the trip.
“I call on the federal government to join Labor’s commitment to fund 20 licences and to address the shortage in the western suburbs,� she said. “Our hospital is putting patients in ambulances to drive them across the road to get their MRI scan done – I’ve experienced this with my own mother. “It has to stop. One million reasons to smile A commuter has been awarded a golden ticket after becoming the one-millionth passenger to use Tarneit train station. Last month, Vikas Malhotra was crowned the 1,000,000th traveller to use the station since it opened three years ago, in June 2015. V/Line chief executive James Pinder presented Mr Malhotra with a “golden ticket� prize of a six-month Myki pass. Mr Malhotra, who uses the station daily to travel to and from work, said he was thrilled. “I have been using the Tarneit Station since the first day it opened and it has made a significant improvement to my journey time,� he said. Expecting a new baby is such an exciting time and it is important we prepare our pets for this new addition to the family. Organisation and training in the months before the baby comes can help reduce any stress for your pet. Try to have your nursery ready early on so the pets are used to this being a “pet-free� part of the house. Practice walking your dog with a pram or baby carrier so that you both become adept at this. Perhaps introduce your pet to spending more time outside if this is likely to happen when the baby arrives. When you first bring your baby home your pet will be curious about this small, noisy bundle. Allow gentle investigation by your pet such as smelling, but not close enough that they could lick the baby. Speak to your pet in soothing tones with this brief introduction and build up the duration if your pet is relaxed. Most pets will adapt well but of course no pet should ever be left unsupervised with a child.A great investment is the book “Tell Your Dog You’re Pregnant� by Behaviour Vet Dr Lewis Kirkham. The Wyndham Theatre Company is this year celebrating five decades of entertaining the community. Originally called the Werribee Theatre Company, the group began in 1968 and staged its first show that year. The theatre group was instigated by a local book club, of which Werribee husband and wife Peter and Elizabeth Ross were members. The couple went on to act in many of the company’s productions. They have also both served as company president, while Mr Ross volunteered as the treasurer for 20 years. Other early members of the company included Alan Peel, Jan and Pamela Tulen, Joan Pearson, Norm McGregor, Merle Gardner, Gwen Laird and Bette Mantello. The company staged its shows in many locations across the years, including the Diggers Road Hall and the Werribee Park theatre. Mr Ross said Werribee Park was only meant to be a “temporary home� for the company, but they remained there for 20 years. He said the dressing rooms at the park were “old wooden structures� mainly occupied by possums – which sometimes also joined the actors on stage. The theatre company even gave out “Possum� awards to its members every year. Mr Ross said one of the company’s most popular shows was Dimboola, which they revived three times. “If we were running low on money, we knew we could stage Dimboola and fill the coffers,� Mrs Ross said. She said that during the ’70s and ’80s the theatre company welcomed many members from the RAAF Point Cook and State Research Farm in Werribee.

MY WYNDHAM Mark Penaluna grew up in Port Melbourne before making Wyndham home in 1992. Now he is well known as the chief executive of the Werribee Football Club. He sat down with Charlene Macaulay to talk footy, community and family.
I moved here from Port Melbourne in 1992, and was married the same year and had two kids, in 1994 and 1997. Why did you move out west? Affordable living – the prices in Port Melbourne had skyrocketed. In some ways Werribee and Wyndham is a lot like what Port Melbourne used to be – I very much enjoy the community feel that’s here, which you don’t have in those inner-city type areas. How did you get involved with the Werribee Football Club? I’ve been in footy all my life. I started playing at the age of six, and was later secretary of the Port Colts. In 1999 I became general manager of the now Western Region Football League, spent five years there, and in September 2003 became general manager of the Werribee Football Club. You’re a member of the Committee for Wyndham, what other groups are you involved with? I’d like to think through my association with the footy club that we’ve done our best in the employment of a full-time community manager, we’re the only club in the VFL that has that. We’ve sponsored each of the football clubs in the area, assisted the overseeing of the AusKicks in the area. As a club, we invest well
over $150,000 [in these things] and I see a lot of pride and satisfaction by us being able to do those things. Why do you think it’s important to be actively involved in your community? It’s something I’ve just grown up with. My family are heavily involved in sport and school. [There’s nothing like] a team environment and a sense of purpose of everyone coming together and working towards something and enjoying each other’s company and celebrating or commiserating after a win or a loss. What is your favourite sporting moment? My proudest sporting moment would have been as an administrator when we opened [the upgraded Chirnside Park] in April this year. If there was one thing you could change about Wyndham, what would that be? I think we need to be somewhat braver and bolder in our aspirations. We’re the size of Geelong – does our facilities match what’s in Geelong at the moment? We’re going to be the size of Canberra in a few years ... our facilities, where possible, should equate to what they have. What’s your favourite Wyndham restaurant of cafe?

The 28 members of the FEDFA, employed by the Board of Works at the Werribee farm, who struck on May 30 for improved pay and conditions were granted 13c per hour increase in their disability allowance. Claims for pay lost while on strike and for extra protective clothing were disallowed.
Werribee’s Anthony Rebesco is $1000 richer after winning the Melbourne to Colac Cycling Classic in record time, last Saturday week. Out of about 130 starters, the 18-year-old champion was one of only 20 cyclists to finish the race and the only junior.
CSR stakeholders could prove to be the key power in the fight against the Werribee toxic dump proposal. The Mayor of Wyndham, Councillor David McLaren, has asked to address the CSR shareholders meeting in Sydney next Monday to explain Wyndham’s opposition to the CSR dump proposal.
Wyndham remains a hot spot for hoons with 161 drivers forced to hand over their keys to police since the introduction of the tough new anti-hoon legislation two years ago. Victoria Police figures show that of the 5030 hoons to have had their cars impounded since July 2006, Hoppers Crossing residents accounted for 64, Werribee 54, Point Cook 15, Wyndham Vale 11, Tarneit 10, Little River four and Werribee South three.

Market pace keeps property buyers on a frantic timetable Results of recent research reveal that three-quarters of Australian property buyers believe those in the market today need to make quicker decisions than they did five years ago. Conducted by data and insights company Pureprofile and canvassing 1000 Australians, the survey asked respondents about property purchasing experiences in the past three years of themselves or family and friends.

The answers revealed buyers believe the current hot market doesn’t give them the luxury of time to do the usual inspections and research or to make carefully considered decisions. In fact, 44 per cent of respondents reported that they, or people they know well, made an offer on a property the same day as a first inspection. Nearly a third made an offer prior to auction date. Nearly half revealed they didn’t obtain building inspections, strata reports or pest reports before making offers on properties. Anthony Baum, founder and chief executive of an Australian lending platform, says that regardless of whether the market slows down further than present (and signs are already here), the past few years have changed vendor and agent expectations – and, in turn, changed buyer experiences. “I can’t see the accelerated pace between choosing a property, making an offer, having it accepted and exchanging contracts slowing down any time soon,” he says.

Werribee midfielder Joe Maishman described it as a “great honour” to play 50 games in the Victorian Football League. Maishman was thrilled to be able to share his milestone day with respected teammates Ben Moloney and Sam Collins against Collingwood at Victoria Park on Sunday. “To run out with Ben Moloney in his 100th and Sam Collins in his 50th was pretty special,” Maishman said. Maishman reckons his season has been a “little bit up and down” individually. Talk to his teammates and they are glowing in their appraisal of his season, but the 22-year-old is a harsh self-assessor. “You’re just always a bit harsher on yourself,” he said. “My good games have been good, but then I’ve had a couple of poor patches. I’m
just trying to get more consistency out of my game.” Maishman has switched roles this season. In previous seasons he was assigned to a wing position because of his speed and the depth of inside midfielders through the North Melbourne alignment and the dominance of Matt Hanson. This season, Hanson is on the long-term injury list and the North Melbourne alignment is no longer, so spots have opened up at the coal face. Maishman is adding an extra dimension to the onball unit. “I can just bring a bit more speed though the middle and provide a good mix with some of the bigger boys,” he said. “I’m happy to have a move in there and play a bit inside and outside because that’s where I always played as a junior.”
Maishman put in one of his toughest pre-seasons to date to build up an even bigger tank. The Geelong Falcons product is looking for an edge on the opposition and spending more time dissecting his game with the coaches. That has been made possible since Werribee returned to standalone status and has its home ground back to full use at Watton Street. Maishman is relishing the footy club feel at Werribee. “Having no alignment and that one club culture has been great,” the Newtown resident said. “We’ve got a great group of boys, a great group of coaches and we’re loving it.”

Sunshine is on the outer, but is starting to make a run in the second half of the season, meaning six teams are staking claims for finals spots and even a top three berth that comes with a double chance. “It’s a bit of a logjam at the moment between first and sixth,” Kretiuk said. “It’s important we treat every week like an elimination final because Sunshine are coming up behind us and you can’t take your foot off the accelerator for even one game.” It was a consistent performance from Hoppers Crossing. The Warriors opened up a nine-point break at quarter-time and kicked
■ In the next few months the attention of the thoroughbred horse racing world will be on Melbourne in the lead up to the Spring Racing Carnival and much of that attention will centre on the Werribee International Horse Centre, where a big contingent of winning chances will be housed. The centre secured the future of the Werribee Racing Club, which was in a very precarious situation for a number of years. Despite the rich history of the club, it was close to shutting the doors. Thankfully, racing continues working in partnership with the international calendar and agenda. There are many success stories to come from the track. A 10-year-old Brad Spicer of Wyndham Vale used to sell papers at the Werribee track on race days to earn pocket money. Now he is one of the leading horse syndicators in Victoria. His group one success with Star Spangled Banner, Commanding Jewel and, recently, with Awesome Rock is testament to his growing stature. I will be highlighting other successes in coming weeks. ■ Concussion issues forced the early retirement from AFL football of Jack Fitzpatrick, but he remains involved as match day runner and part-time ruck coach at Werribee in the VFL. A Wyndhamvale junior, he had eight years in the AFL system and battled chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes and the usual injuries before a head knock pulled the curtain down on his playing career. The human attrition rate in football is very high and these young men – and, soon, young women – must make big adjustments to make it. Like any job in today’s world, it does not last. But in some ways, professional athletes are better prepared as they are aware of that before they sign up to play. ■ Pat Hodgson epitomised everything you could want in a Bulldogs supporter. She was passionate, vocal, reliable, resilient, respectful and there every week. Pat attended functions, training nights – everything red, white and blue. Pat and daughter Jenny virtually became the face of the club there for a time, especially after their appearance in the Year of the Dogs documentary. Author Martin Flanagan dedicated his book on the 2016 premiership – A Wink to the Universe – to Pat. She was hugely popular at the club and will be greatly missed by all. Pat passed away last Friday; condolences to Jenny and the family.

It was a dismal day from start to finish for Point Cook in the Western Region Football League division 2. The signs were bad early when ruckman Wayde Skipper went down in the first quarter with a hamstring injury. Soon after, midfielder Jay Bluscke’s game ended with a calf complaint. It was not the day for the Bulldogs to be undermanned, coming face to face with the all-conquering Yarraville-Seddon Eagles, who further enhanced its credentials in the 67-point win at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday. Point Cook was restricted to just three goals for the game – not the kind of output to trouble the Eagles, nor excite a crowd. Two of the Bulldogs goals came off the boot of Tristan Furr, while Matthew Poland snared the other.
Bulldogs coach Ian Denny admitted his side was second best on the day, but denies the gap between the sides is that big. “They played really well and full credit to Yarraville,” Denny said. “They ran and spread better than what we did and they were a little better organised than us after we lost a couple of players early. “They out-played us, but I don’t think there’s such a huge gap, that’s not a true reflection of the gap between the two teams. “I think those margins will tighten up towards the end of the year.” Point Cook will face an equally desperate North Footscray in the clash between second and third at Hansen Reserve on Saturday. North Footscray is coming off a shock defeat to local rivals West Footscray.
Meanwhile, Manor Lakes had a shocker, kicking just one goal in a 62-point loss to Parkside. The Storm has tumbled to sixth. In division 1, Werribee Districts survived a fright in a 13-point victory over Albion. The win moves the Tigers into top spot – two points clear of four other sides. Wyndhamvale could not break the drought, going down by 114 points to Sunshine. In division 3, Glen Orden made it two successive wins, beating Laverton by 21 points. Wyndham Suns improved to 11-0, taking care of North Sunshine by 131 points, Point Cook Centrals bounced back with 35-point win over Sunshine Heights and in-form Tarneit thrashed Braybrook by 80 points.

Hoppers Crossing coach Steve Kretiuk admits that Saturday’s upset 10-point win over reigning premier Deer Park was not one the club would have “pencilled in”. In Kretiuk’s five years as coach of the Warriors it was only the second time they had beaten Deer Park, the powerhouse that has won all five Western Region Football League division 1 premierships in that time. Although Deer Park was missing a handful of first team regulars, it was still a satisfying win for the Warriors, who were fielding a raw and inexperienced side of their own. “It’s the first time in my five years we’ve beaten them at their home ground and only the second time in five years that we’ve actually beaten them,” Kretiuk said. “In saying that, they had a few players out, which probably helped our cause a little bit. But they have a fair bit of depth and having that depth allows them to bring in some pretty handy players. “It was probably one of the youngest sides we’ve put out on the park in a long time, so we’re rapt to get the win.” It was a significant result for Hoppers Crossing, which improved to eight wins, joining five teams with the same number.

The wingman had just returned from an overseas trip that might have been the tonic he needed to freshen up his body. Kretiuk is calling on his side to attack in-form Caroline Springs with the same vigour when they clash at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday. “We spoke about that straight after the game,” he said. “We’ve got to make sure at home this week that we come to play.”

Jets pull back from the brink By Lance Jenkinson Point Cook soccer coach Craig Filer was faced with some tough decisions during the Football Federation Victoria mid-season transfer window. The Jets’ leader could not afford to stand pat, otherwise his side would be rolling the dice on relegation – hoping to survive, rather than actively seeking survival. Filer made the hard calls, dropped the axe on a number of under-performing players and returned to those he knows and trusts. “Over the course of the past six to eight weeks we started weeding some of these players out that are not a good fit for us,” he said. “We’ve gone back to what we know – players that have played for the club, understand the culture of the club.” The results indicate Filer made the right calls. Point Cook has turned its fortunes around, going from the relegation zone five weeks ago to a more comfortable existence in eighth place. But work remains to be done if the side is to rid itself completely of relegation fears. The Jets have racked up three wins in their previous four matches, including a 1-0 nail-biter over Sunbury United at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday. Their only loss in their past four games came in a crazy 5-4 loss to Moreland United in a game they led 3-1 at half-time.
