Carparks may go private By Charlene Macaulay Privately financed multi-storey carparks could be built at Williams Landing, Tarneit and Werribee train stations under a new plan being considered by Wyndham council. The council’s city transport department has engaged consultants to develop a business case to seek funding from a private financier-backed consortium to build a multi-storey, multi-use carpark at the Williams Landing train station to address parking issues in and around the station. Council officers are also considering the possibility of privately funded multi-storey carparks at Tarneit and Werribee train stations. The council has also lobbied the state
government to fund this project, and in April wrote to state public transport minister Jacinta Allen. The council’s actions have been detailed in a response to a petition signed by 194 people calling on the council to buy land around the Williams Landing Town Centre to develop a long-stay carpark; to introduce paid parking in the town centre; and to introduce permit parking in surrounding residential streets. The petitioners raised concerns about the lack of parking at Williams Landing train station and the expected impact on parking once the Target headquarters was complete. A council report has recommended the council continue with both its advocacy efforts and feasibility case into a privately-funded
arrangement, but does not approve the proposal for paid or permit parking in Williams Landing. A decision on the report has been deferred and will be voted on at an upcoming council meeting following a motion by councillor Heather Marcus. “I believe that we need a lot more information to make sure that the decision, when it comes back to council, will be the right decision,” Cr Marcus said. But councillor Josh Gilligan said the council should not shoulder responsibility for parking at train stations. Posting on his councillor Facebook page at the weekend, Cr Gilligan said a private multi-storey carpark “should not replace the obligations of state [and] federal governments
to build Wyndham’s rail network to deal with overcrowding at Victoria’s second busiest V/Line station”. “Building a for-profit multi-storey parking at Tarneit station could see commuters pay up to $20 a day for parking and must be a last resort,” Cr Gilligan wrote. “That’s why I will be calling for a feasibility study to develop a park and ride service on land reserved for Davis Road station to get commuters to and from work safer and quicker.” Meanwhile, federal opposition leader Bill Shorten has vowed to establish a $300 million fund for new or expanded carparks at busy train stations if Labor wins the next federal election.

A-League shot a step closer By Charlene Macaulay A Wyndham council-backed bid to be home to one of two new A-League soccer teams is one step closer to fruition. Football Federation Australia has short-listed the Western Melbourne Group’s bid to set-up a new club in Tarneit as part of an expansion of the A-League. The bid is one of 10 to make the cut, with a final decision expected on October 31.
If successful, a multi-million dollar 15,000-seat stadium – dubbed “Wyndham Stadium” – will be built on a Wyndham-council owned parcel of land at 1160 Sayers Road. Wyndham council has worked with the Western Melbourne Group on the bid, which also has the support of the Brimbank, Maribyrnong and Melton councils. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said it was fantastic that the strength of the bid had been recognised.

Motorist calls parking fine a ‘cash grab’
One hundred reasons to celebrate Ethel Brownjohn has 100 reasons to smile after notching up a century on earth on Tuesday. Born July 3, 1918, in Bootle, Liverpool, Ethel was the third of five children; two elder brothers and two younger sisters. The family moved to Sydney when Ethel was still young, later making Brunswick home. She met her late husband Noel on a staircase in a Chinese cafe on Little Collins Street and said it was love at first sight. The Brownjohns had two kids, Douglas and Barbara, and the brood has grown to include three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Ethel worked as a tram conductress and
also in administration at the Maribyrnong ammunitions factory. Daughter-in-law Marlene said Ethel was very family-oriented and would come over every Sunday and spend time reading to her grandchildren while she prepared a roast lunch. Ethel spent her adult years living across the inner north-west suburbs, living in Maribyrnong, Travencore and Seddon, before moving further out west to Hoppers Crossing more than 22 years ago. She lived in her own home until two years ago, when she moved to Uniting AgeWell in Manor Lakes.
Wearing a mint-coloured cardigan she had knitted herself, her hair set and nails done, Ethel told Star Weekly that “looking after myself” was the key to reaching triple digits. The keen sewer also loved camping, swimming, and playing golf and basketball. The family celebrated at the weekend, with the Royal Flying Doctors Service flying over Ethel’s sister from her aged care home to spend some time with her while great-grandson Joshua, eight, read out a number of facts about what life was like on the day Ethel was born. A Wyndham motorist is fuming after being fined for parking his car in the wrong direction. Shawn Lynch said he was parked on the nature strip in front of a house in Kulin Drive, Tarneit, when Wyndham council issued him with the $95 fine. Mr Lynch said that although he knew parking in the wrong direction was against the law, he believed that the council’s act of issuing him with an infringement was “pedantic and petty”. “I feel it was a real cash grab, stretching the road rule of parking in the direction of traffic flow on the side of the street to the extreme, rather than just parking on the nature strip itself,” Mr Lynch said. “Another car two doors down was also fined for the same reason, while a car between us was not fined as it was facing the right way.” Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said Mr Lynch was fined for being parked while facing the wrong direction, but not for parking on the nature strip. “While it is also an offence to park on a nature strip, council’s parking officers chose to only issue one infringement notice in this instance,” he said. “Parking a vehicle in the wrong direction is dangerous as it means the driver had to travel on the wrong side of the road to park the car and will need to do so again when they move their vehicle. “As is the case with any infringement notice, council will review this parking fine on request.”

Tree vandalism shocks council By Alesha Capone Wyndham ratepayers will foot the bill to replace hundreds of trees destroyed by vandals. The council’s environment and sustainability portfolio holder Cr Heather Marcus said the council was “extremely disappointed” that about 1200 trees, which were planted along South Ring Road in Werribee less than a month ago, had been destroyed. “It will now cost us around $20,000 to replace the damaged trees, with ratepayers ultimately
covering this repair bill,” Cr Marcus said. Cr Marcus said the trees were planted as part of the Greening the West initiative, which is a collaboration between 22 organisations, including the council and City West Water. “The fact that a positive and innovative partnership between many different organisations and the community has been marred by such a blatant act of vandalism is of course very upsetting,” Cr Marcus said. “The damaged trees were a mix of native wattles, banksias and eucalypts.
“They were planted in early June and appear to have been destroyed by a vehicle driving over them.” Cr Marcus said the council believed the trees were damaged between Monday, June 18 and Wednesday, June 20. A rock and a fun place Rock on: A simple and creative activity for children, launched by two Wyndham mothers, has taken off on social media. Friends Lisa Cornish and Sandra Tomlinson founded the Facebook group Point Cook Rocks in April. Both women paint and hide small rocks around Point Cook’s parks and playgrounds, for children to find and re-hide. Other families are encouraged to paint and hide rocks too. They post the rocks’ location – or perhaps a clue – in the Facebook group, so people can search for them. Mrs Cornish and Mrs Tomlinson, who each have two sons, said the aim of the page was to start a fun, low-cost activity which anyone could take part in. Mrs Cornish said they were inspired by geocaching, and also wanted to create an activity which would allow their sons Luis, Sami, Kyle and Alex to play together.
She said they were surprised by how popular the Point Cook Rocks group, which has amassed more than 780 members, had become. Mrs Tomlinson said some of the group’s members had hidden the rocks outside of Point Cook, in areas such as Truganina and Laverton. “My boys prefer the hiding part of it, because they get to play in the parks,” Mrs Tomlinson said. “My husband thinks it’s hilarious, he says, ‘You and your pebbling’.” Mrs Tomlinson said they also used the rocks to raise awareness of issues, such as pollution, and had released a series of rocks painted with Anzac Day-themed pictures earlier in the year. Kevin Hillier wants radio to focus on respect, not ratings
I
t was 1984, the radio station was 3XY and the subject was premature ejaculation. Shocking stuff for its time in many ways, especially on a music radio station like 3XY, but the person talking to me about that subject was Bettina Arndt – a sex therapist, clinical psychologist, editor of Forum magazine, author and journalist. It was the first of her weekly segments on my morning program and it was well publicised we were going to talk about some sensitive subjects. There was no pre-warning of coarse language, nudity, sex scenes etc, like you get now, but listeners knew what to expect. As the host of the segment, I had a responsibility to make sure it was an adult conversation about an adult topic, which it always was. We had fun with it but everyone involved, including the audience members who rang in, knew what the boundaries were. It was meant to entertain and inform, not to titillate. Here we are in 2018 and society’s standards have changed and radio is a good example. Swearing on air is commonplace, the subject
matter is open slather, from sexual experiences to bodily functions, and it seems any time of the day is fine for these to be discussed. I am fine with all of this only because one thing hasn’t changed – there is still an off button. Live radio is unpredictable by its very nature, but most on air presenters know where to draw the line. Unfortunately last weekend that line was crossed, a presenter was sacked, and a furore erupted. The comment is indefensible, and the topic unbelievable, given it was part of a football preview show. Station management was commended for taking swift action but condemned for only sacking one of the presenters, when all were complicit. As a parent, I am glad I wasn’t listening in the car with my 13 year old son in the back seat. As a male, I am appalled that a group of men would talk about this subject in this manner on air or even off air, to be honest. Finally, as a broadcaster, I am saddened by the lack of respect that many in front of a microphone these days show for their audience. We deserve better. â–

Five men from Melbourne’s western suburbs are expected to be charged on summons after an investigation into illegal hunting and spotlighting in the Wangaratta area. Police from the Game Management Authority interviewed the men, aged between 19 and 33, after a games officer seized a firearm about 1am on June 19.

Strong interest in new school By Alesha Capone A Christian college set to open in Wyndham Vale next year has already received hundreds of expressions of interest from families keen to enrol their children. Heatherton Christian College, which is based in Clarinda in Melbourne’s southeast, last month announced Wyndham council had approved a school at a 12-hectare site on Ballan Road, near the Wyndham Vale Christian Centre. The new school, Wyndham Christian
College, will open for prep to grade four pupils in term one of 2019, with additional grades to follow in subsequent years. The school will take on a maximum of 150 students when it opens. But Heatherton’s marketing manager Rob Ward said the college had already received about 500 inquiries for enrolments. He said the college would soon begin interviewing families who hoped to send their children to the school. “What we’re expecting is that we will be having a waiting list for the first few years,” Mr
Ward said. “The school will grow to grade five and six in 2020 and 2021.” Mr Ward said when the school was finished, its total student population would be about 1450 children from prep to year 12. Mr Ward said the first stage of the school’s construction would include six classrooms, with two for grade prep pupils. He said the school would primarily service the Christian community, but would also be open to pupils and families who “share our values”. Mr Ward said the school was in the process of
engaging builders for stage one of construction, which will cost about $3 million. He said the school had submitted an application for the college’s construction to the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority and was waiting on a “tick of approval” from the authority, before building could begin. A public information session about the future college will be held Wednesday, July 25 at 7.30pm at the Wyndham Vale Christian Centre, 418-438 Ballan Road, Wyndham Vale.
Layers of urban change A Brunswick East artist who deconstructs photos to create entirely new images has snapped up the Wyndham Art Prize’s People’s Choice Award. Photographer Carmel Louise spent more than 165 hours creating her piece, Constructional No.1, V1 in 3D, which started with a photo of a Lygon Street construction site that had previously been an old theatre. Louise adapted the image using a technique she has dubbed DeConstructed technology, in which she deconstructs the original image to create multiple patterns. “It’s like a painting in a way – you build it up layer by layer,” she said. Louise said the work was a metaphor for the gentrification and changes to inner-city areas such as Brunswick, Northcote and Fitzroy. “It’s the stripping down of the old, and rejuvenating it into something that’s completely divergent from its origins,” she said.
“This was typically a Greek and Italian area … but you knock down the old buildings and remove the manufacturing hub that was here and it’s replaced with apartment buildings and hipsters and yuppies – a whole new demographic with hip bars and hip restaurants and boutique clothing shops. “When they replace these old buildings, they don’t tend to save any of the key elements. The wrecking balls comes through and anything historical is just blown away.” The artist said she was thrilled to have her piece selected as the People’s Choice. “It’s one thing to be judged by one person … but when you’ve got a whole group of people who don’t know you … telling you that they think that your artwork is the best in that room, that’s a very clear message that I’m on the right track,” she said. Call to fix ‘dangerous’ intersection By Alesha Capone Concerned residents, an MP and Wyndham council are calling for a “dangerous” Wyndham Vale intersection to be upgraded. The intersection, on the corner of Ballan Road and Anniversary Avenue, is a main entrance to the Jubilee Estate. Residents claim motorists travelling north on Ballan Road are making illegal right hand turns into Anniversary Avenue, as well as entering the estate via an exit lane. McKinnon, said VicRoads had approved the intersection and were also responsible for any upgrades. “We have received several complaints from residents about the safety of this intersection and we have formally contacted VicRoads to request that it be upgraded,” Mr McKinnon said.
“We understand the community’s concerns and we will continue to advocate to VicRoads for these issues to be addressed.” Jubilee Estate resident Kat Betts said she had nearly been involved in a number of accidents at the intersection. “It’s just a stupid intersection where someone will get hurt, or a car totalled,” Ms Betts said. “The point is, it’s dangerous for people leaving the estate.” Ms Betts that she and other residents had contacted VicRoads and Wyndham council about the issue. She said that the most logical way to upgrade
the intersection would be to install a turn-right option. Ms Betts also penned a letter about the intersection to western metropolitan MP Bernie Finn, who read it in parliament last month. “It’s a very dangerous situation that should have been addressed a long time ago,” Mr Finn told Star Weekly. VicRoads director of transport and planning metro north west, David Teague, said the authority was “working closely with Wyndham city council to determine if there are any short-term safety improvements needed at this intersection”.
Chef dines on success Meet Point Cook’s very own master chef, Jack Lee. Mr Lee was crowned Chef of the Year by Foodservice Australia in May after contesting a three-day competition in Sydney against 180 other entrants. He cooked his way through several live rounds of food challenges, sometimes against head chefs from big venues and hotels. Mr Lee said he was “overwhelmed” to win the contest. He said he believed his experience participating in a Chaine des Rotisseurs competition for young chefs, which he won two years ago, prepared him well for the Foodservice Australia event. He has also previously worked as a senior sous chef at Hentley Farm in South Australia. Now Mr Lee is planning to use his experience to open a cafe in his home suburb.
He’s hoping to open Beansmuggler, later this month. “I’m excited but I’m also a little bit nervous, it’s my first business,” he said. New boss for St Vincent’s Private By Charlene Macaulay Meet the new head of St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee. Suzanne Hall, a registered nurse, has taken the reins from Christine Flett as chief executive and director of nursing, following an extensive career in the healthcare sector. Ms Hall started her career as a general intensive care and paediatrics nurse in Liverpool. She moved to Australia in 1990 and has held roles at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Eastern Health, Warringal Private Hospital
and Epworth Freemasons before joining St Vincent’s Private at the end of May. Since opening at the end of January, the hospital has treated 1000 patients and delivered 22 babies, with the bulk of patients coming from Wyndham. A number of locals have also signed on as volunteers for the hospital. Meanwhile, a rehabiliation service with six beds will open this month, and rooms at the hospital’s consulting suites are filling up fast. Ms Hall said she jumped at the chance to run Wyndham’s first private hospital and offer healthcare previously not available in the area.
“I love the opportunity of building healthcare and connections with the doctors in the area. There’s lot of excellent doctors in the area out west, there’s lots of patients that have been travelling into the city, into city private hospitals, to have their healthcare delivered. “Being able to offer all of those cardiology services, general surgery, orthopaedic surgery, gynaecology, oncology, paediatric services, general medicine – all of the things that you know the community needs to help them keep well, without having to go into the city … and building the services, building the teams, to be able to provide that [is exciting].”

An island of support The Pacific Connections Expo will be held in Hoppers Crossing next week, to help connect people from the Pacific community with support services and businesses. The event has been organised by volunteers from the Pacific Connections group, which last year held its first-ever expo in Ardeer. President Morwenna Petaia said the upcoming expo would include services to help people experiencing mental health and other health-related issues. “For Pacific communities, mental health is an area where we often don’t speak out loud or speak together about it, which is why we wanted to have a focus on that,” she said. Ms Petaia said the expo would also feature a question and answer session with the Greens and Liberal candidates for Tarneit, tips for saving for a housing deposit and a workshop on New Zealand citizens’ rights within Australia.
The creative aspects of Pacific culture will also be well represented, with Pasifika youth in Wyndham hosting a fashion show for Pacific designers. Other performers include students from Truganina P-9 College’s Pacific group, the Nuholani Keiki Dancers and rapper Nomad. Students call for crossing to go By Charlene Macaulay A University of Melbourne study has recommended removing the Hoppers Crossing train station level crossing. A total 150 second-year bachelor of design students conducted more than 1400 surveys and spent 70 hours performing headcounts and observing how people used the Werribee city centre, Hoppers Crossing town centre, Point Cook Town Centre and Pacific Werribee. Three of the students presented their findings to Wyndham council last week.
University of Melbourne urban planning professor Carolyn Whitzman said the research aimed to support Wyndham council policy around activity centres. “There were recommendations around Hoppers Crossing station which is really disastrous in terms of street life … there’s quite a few high school students who go from Suzanne Cory [High School] to the station and quite a few people who go from Werribee Mercy Hospital to the station,” Professor Whitzman said. “If it’s going to be a serious national
employment centre then it has to deal with its really dire issues around walkability and cyclability. Level crossing removal really needs to come to Hoppers Crossing, that’s the bottom line.” Professor Whitzman said the students were also interested in how to translate the success of projects such as the Point Cook pop-up park – which had lots of community engagement and ownership by a wide number of organisations – to the Werribee city centre. Transport connectivity between buses and train stations was also a key concern.
“This goes slightly beyond what local government can do other than its advocacy function, [but] the connections between trains and buses are really poor,” Professor Whitzman said. Wyndham council mayor Peter Maynard said the detailed research had “garnered some excellent insight into how accessible, inclusive and livable” Wyndham activity hubs were. The students designed posters detailing their findings and recommendations, which are currently on display at the Wyndham civic centre.

Lila Gray, who has won the club’s women’s championship 10 times, said she got involved through her then-husband. “As people came in, they brought their wives,” she said. The club hosts a fishing competition every second weekend, going to a range of river, surf, freshwater and bay locations. The members’ biggest catches have been preserved by a taxidermist and are proudly displayed throughout the clubroom. This long-running club has its members hook, line and sinker. The Werribee and District Angling Club is celebrating 120 years of recreational and competitive fishing, and boasts a membership across a number of generations, with its youngest member seven years old, and the eldest in their 70s. While very little is known of the club’s 1898 origins, the club’s longest serving member, Charles Aldersea, remembers a time when the group would meet in each other’s homes. The club has been based along the Werribee River since the 1960s, when they converted the former Chirnside Park change rooms into their headquarters. “We built this ourselves,” Mr Aldersea said. What an eye opener it was to attend the official launch of the Wyndham Tech School last week. The $10 million facility located at Victoria University’s Werribee Campus will provide opportunity for students from Wyndham’s secondary colleges to immerse themselves in a high-tech facility that offers project work utilising 3D printers, drones, virtual reality, augmented reality and much more. As we transition to a knowledge economy it is forecast that 75% of future jobs will require a high level of proficiency in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The Tech School will enhance programs that schools provide to help students prepare for future jobs. A critical element of the Tech School offer will be engaging with industry with the aim of students working on real projects as well as providing opportunities for our local small and medium businesses to access technical equipment they could not otherwise afford to purchase. With this in mind I encourage Wyndham’s proud and passionate business community to familiarise themselves with what the 21st century Tech School has to offer as well as encouraging all students and parents to embrace this state of the art facility as it enriches STEM learning across Wyndham. Award for brave teen By Alesha Capone A teenage girl who called triple-0 during an aggravated burglary while she was home alone, has been officially recognised for her bravery. Fifteen-year-old Olivia Conder was in her family’s Hoppers Crossing house last month, studying for exams, when a group of men broke into the home. The quick-thinking young woman hid in her bedroom, called triple-0 and continued to give the emergency operator information until police arrived. Two Wyndham police officers last week visited Olivia’s school, Point Cook Senior Secondary College, to present her with a certificate of recognition for her bravery. Acting Sergeant Jason Templar and Acting Sergeant Anita Harraway presented Olivia with the certificate during a school assembly. Acting Sergeant Templar said that thanks to Olivia’s actions, police had been able to arrest three men who allegedly broke into her family’s house. “Unfortunately for them, they decided to pick the wrong house, because inside that house was a student from this school, Olivia Conder, whose decisiveness and bravery resulted in her calling triple-0,” Acting Sergeant Templar said. He said that thanks to Olivia, the three men had been “taken off the streets of Wyndham” and remanded in custody. Three 18-year-old men, from Bundoora, Epping and Brookfield, have been charged with a total of 20 charges in relation to the incident. Olivia’s mother Lee-Anne and father Neal, said they were proud of their daughter’s actions. Point Cook Senior Secondary College principal Christopher Mooney described Olivia as a “very brave young woman.”

Fashionable frocks, floor-length evening gowns and other designs will hit the runway later this year for the 21st annual Fashion Awards Australia. Awards director Heather Marcus said that the annual event – in which budding designers from around the nation and design students from TAFEs, secondary colleges and tertiary campuses display their works in a range of categories – would be held at Encore Events Centre in Hoppers Crossing on Friday, October 12. The awards will host the Australian Gown of the Year award for the second year running. Ms Marcus said many school students had been working on their designs since the beginning of this year.
Designer Sia Zacharis won both Australian Gown of the Year and Australian Designer of the Year in last year’s awards, wowing judges with a floor-length gown with a thigh-high split and one-shoulder detail. In the secondary school category, Anh Hoang, from St Albans Secondary College, won three awards – best long gown, young designer of the year and most outstanding garment. Collinder: switched on tech that meets family needs Brad Collinder’s family-run electrics business has undergone a high-tech transformation, resulting in a tripling of turnover and broadening its scope and size in five years. A firefighter moves on Ken Heddle has lived and breathed firefighting all of his adult life. The 73-year-old Wyndham Vale resident was 15 years old when he joined Werribee fire brigade as a junior member in 1961 and took part in brigade competitions. Within two years, he was an active member. Mr Heddle said he would miss the friendship and camaraderie when he and his wife move to Bendigo this month. But his volunteering days may not be over yet, with Mr Heddle keen to join the Eaglehawk CFA. He worked as a career firefighter with the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, stationed in Footscray and across the western suburbs until the mid-’90s, when he moved into the transport and logistics industry.
“I’ve seen a lot of bad stuff,� he said. “The Lara bushfire day, we had a fire out the back of the Tarneit and Truganina area at the same time. That was a big grassfire that went all the way through from Truganina to Laverton. “I’ve seen a lot of building fires. I saw the Werribee Manor went it went up in the ’60s – I was riding the main truck.� Despite the tough call-outs, Mr Heddle said he treasured his 57 years with Werribee fire brigade, where he served as secretary for four years. He became a life member of the branch in 1991. Mr Heddle was farewelled by his Werribee crew at a function last week.

MY WYNDHAM At the age of 14, Cameron Moyes is already a taekwondo champion. He competes at a club, state and international level. This week, he is heading to Canberra for the national team selections for the Oceania Championships in Tahiti. Cameron chats with Alesha Capone.
I was aged four, I asked my parents if I could take it up. What do you enjoy most about the sport? I like the competitiveness, there are lots of competitions, and the flexibility of it. This year, I travelled to Belgium and Holland for competitions. I did another one, the New Zealand Open, last year. It was exciting, I’d never been to compete outside of Australia, it was a different level really. I’m hoping to go to the World Championships in Taipei in November. There will be a qualifying event held in Bendigo, the Australian National Championships. How often do you train? I pretty much train every day, at Hall’s Taekwondo and at home. The biggest challenge is that you have to keep training through the year, or else you fall behind and have to work twice as hard to catch up. I’m unusual in that I do both taekwondo disciplines of sparring and poomsae. Sparring is fighting and poomsae is more of
a pre-set routine, most people do one or the other. What’s your ultimate ambition? I’d probably, when I’m older and if I could, like to go to the Olympics. I’d love to possibly place at the worlds, that would be a dream come true. You’re also a taekwondo instructor? I’ve just finished my instructor’s course and I hope to get a job this year. I did some volunteer instructing in my first club and I do a fair bit at Hall’s. I do a few development classes with younger children. I love teaching in general, passing on what I’ve learned and seeing the smiles on the little kid’s faces when they do something right or I tell them ‘good job’. What do you like most about living in Hoppers Crossing? There are a lot of things I enjoy, the shopping centres, I’ve got a lot of friends around here, AquaPulse. Hoppers Crossing is quite busy compared to other areas, but I like it a lot.

Cr. Frank Purcell claimed on Monday that the new Board of Works would lead to a situation where all decisions were made by the senior officers of the MMBW. The world’s first genetically engineered vaccine against parasites has been developed by scientists at the University of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic in Werribee. Hunger busters without the guilt Studies show that people eat a whopping 30 to 50 per cent more when fattening snacks are within easy reach, and that can put a serious dent into healthy eating or weight-loss aspirations. And it’s not just about what’s in our pantries – offices these days often have biscuits, chocolates and confectionery for cheap prices in the cause of fundraising. So what to do about beating temptation, especially when the 3 o’clock droop descends? The simple answer for home pantry-raiding is not to stock them in the first place. At work, some ideas to beat the rush to ruin include: 1. Have an apple Packed with energy, rich in fructose sugar and high in carbs, vitamins and minerals, an apple can satisfy the sweet cravings and, while not as big a boost as a coffee, will supply glucose to brain and muscles. 2. Munch on pecans They’re one of the most antioxidant-rich nuts around, so eat up. Antioxidants fight oxidation in the body that can be raised by stress, alcohol, car fumes or pollution. Pecans are texturally satisfying and turn your mind away from the temptation to munch unhealthily. 3. Cheese, please Containing just as much protein as turkey and fish, cheese on wholegrain crackers – in moderation – is a great snack and can be a perfect smack in the mouth for hunger pangs. Cottage cheese, topped with a slice of avo, is ideal as they’re low in ‘bad’ fats. 4. Seaweed, so good While it can be a polarising food, seaweed has a high iodine level, which is essential for normal thyroid function. I’m a regular meat eater and I’m the first to admit that a medium rare rib eye straight off the barbie is foodie nirvana for me. But I also eat vegetarian meals on a regular basis and feel equally satisfied when I do. Often I’ll switch to a meat-free alternative. When my hubby makes pizzas in the portable pizza oven he calls the Starship Enterprise, he’ll whip me up one with a vegetarian topping. When we eat hamburgers, I sometimes like to substitute the meat patty for a grilled portobello mushroom. I used to have a preconceived notion that meals without meat were somehow less satisfying. Then I discovered cauliflower! Like mushrooms, cauliflowers have a “meaty” texture. For me they are the most versatile veggie of the lot. If you’ve never tried a cauliflower steak before, I highly recommend giving it a go. This recipe comes courtesy of Nourish Every Day – Healthy Recipes and Nutrition.

GARLIC MUSTARD CAULIFLOWER STEAKS 1 small-to-medium cauliflower 1 and a half tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons mustard powder 1 teaspoon garlic powder 2 teaspoons maple syrup ½ teaspoon salt
Preheat oven to 180C. Line a tray with baking paper. Slice the cauliflower into “steaks’ (about 1.5-centimetres thick) to create about three steaks. Mix other ingredients into a paste. Rub paste over the steaks and lay them on the tray. Roast for about 30 minutes, flipping at the 15-minute mark, or until softened and browning at the edges. Serve with chips, salad or a side of your choice.

Moloney ready for a milestone match By Lance Jenkinson There has been the odd disruption along the way, but Werribee onballer/forward Ben Moloney will run out for his 100th Victorian Football League game against former club Collingwood on Sunday at Victoria Park. Moloney’s willingness to embrace the struggle and learn from whatever challenges were thrown his way made him the respected footballer that he is today and added a sweetener to his 100-game achievement. Injuries never seemed too far away for Moloney, nor a change of club, with his return to Werribee this season his third transfer since arriving at Watton Street as a teenager out of the Geelong Falcons. Moloney never let injuries derail his career and was always willing to seek greener pastures before out-staying his welcome. “I’d have liked it to have been a bit smoother with injury and that sort of thing,” he said of his career. “Ideally I would’ve loved to have stayed at the one club, but in terms of opportunities, I ended up moving.” Moloney’s initial first three years at Werribee were hard. At the time, Werribee was aligned with North Melbourne, and senior opportunities were tough to come by for a youngster. Moloney played 11 games across those three years before leaving for more opportunities. While it was frustrating for Moloney in the league, he considers that three-year period as an important time in his development. “At the start, I probably didn’t get the opportunities that I thought I would’ve got, but when I look back on it, Werribee gave me the foundation to do the hard work and show what it does take to be a VFL senior player,” he said. “It pushes you and gives that drive to want to get better and be better.” Moloney’s stocks rose when he moved to Collingwood. He played 66 games with the Magpies, evolving into one of the most

respected onballers in the VFL. In 2015, he was vice-captain, best-and-fairest and named in the VFL team of the year. “It’s a club I’ve got a lot of love for,” Moloney said. “Four years at the one club is a significant time. “I’d get there about 4pm and wouldn’t leave there until 9.30pm sometimes to get back to Geelong. “I spent serious time there, made a lot of good friendships and met a lot of good people. “To play my 100th against them is really nice.” Last season, Moloney decided to move closer to home to play with the
Geelong Cats, but a broken leg cost him momentum. He managed 12 senior games, but felt the opportunities going forward would be limited. Now 26, Moloney has enjoyed a fresh start with Werribee, and even changed up his game. Usually a fierce inside midfielder, Moloney has also been used as a defensive forward, a role he has embraced, though he still loves the onball battle. “I’m certainly not pulling up as sore as I had been playing through the midfield,” he said. “I do really enjoy that defensive forward role, where I can work up the ground and work back.” “It doesn’t worry me where I’m playing.
“I’m just happy to be playing and doing my bit for the team.” Moloney has been well supported by his parents and siblings over the years, but they will not be attending his 100th game. Instead, his family will be soaking up the sun in Bali on a family holiday planned months ago. Moloney was supposed to play his milestone game last week, but a suspension disrupted those plans. “I think they’ll be happy to be in 30 degrees, sitting by the pool” Moloney said with a laugh. ■ For

SPORT Defeats derail Devils’ drive to finals Werribee Devils have been thrown a curveball in Big V women’s division 1 basketball. The Devils, seemingly cruising towards the play-offs on the back of a six-game winning streak, hit a couple of road blocks on a double-header weekend. Their winning run came to an end on Saturday night with flat 66-48 loss to Hawthorn Magic – but there was thought to be no need for panic after a rare blemish. Another loss, on Sunday, this time by a 91-81 scoreline to Whittlesea Pacers at Eagle Stadium, heightened the cause for concern. The losses put Werribee’s spot in the finals under threat because both were to sides around them in the standings. In the defeat to Hawthorn, the Devils could not get going offensively.
Aside from import Alyssa Bennett, who scored 23 points to go with 13 rebounds, the starting unit struggled to find the bottom of the basket. Jessy Price was the Devils’ only other double-figure scorer with 10 points, but she produced them with an inefficient three-from-18 from the field. Price was not alone as the Devils’ shooting woes seeped into any player not named Bennett. Werribee was much better offensively against Whittlesea, but had the opposite issue – leaking too many points. Georgia Tauschke led the way for the Devils with 26 points and seven rebounds, while the consistent Bennett put up 21 points and 11 rebounds. The Devils (10-8) will square off with title
favourite Mildura Heat (15-2) in a blockbuster at Eagle Stadium on Sunday. In men’s state championship, Werribee Devils suffered a third straight loss, going down 96-83 to Hawthorn Magic at the Boroondara Sports Complex on Saturday night. Imports Konor Kulas and Bryan Nagy performed to their usual high standards. Kulas had a well-rounded stat line of 24 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks, while Nagy worked tirelessly for 16 points, six rebounds, five steals and two blocks. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Ben Jolley, a warrior for the Williamstown Football Club for many years, last weekend broke Troy West’s games record for the club. Jolley led his side to a 30-point win over Collingwood in front of the Seagull faithful. Jolley has done it all in the blue and gold, winning the Gerry Callahan Medal for club best and fairest four times and the Ron James Memorial Trophy nine times and leading the club to premiership glory in 2015. He is an inspirational leader, like many before him at Point Gellibrand, and his name deservingly ranks with the likes of Troy West, Terry Wheeler, Saade Ghazi, Ian Rickman and Barry Round, to name but a few. No doubt he will join them in the Williamstown Hall of Fame in the future. ■ Scott Mizzi this weekend will play his 450th WRFL game – an amazing feat. Starting at Altona as a seven year old in the under-9s, Scott has enjoyed a lot of football at several clubs – Sunshine Heights, Deer Park and, currently, with Laverton Magpies. His mother Janine was on the WRFL board for a number of years and the family is entrenched in footy in the west. It is a great milestone, one I hope he can savour. ■ Former Bulldogs and Werribee star Simon Atkins’ success as a coach continues with his charges at St Bernard’s taking out the Associated Catholic Colleges championship against Whitefriars last week by a point. “Axe” loves his involvement with the school, so this back-to-back triumph rates pretty highly. The school has had a very impressive AFL graduation list over the years, including Justin and Simon Madden, Matthew Lloyd, Mitch Wallis, Tom Liberatore, Jude Bolton, Joe Daniher, Dane Swan and emerging Swans star Ben Ronke. Xavier O’Halloran, current Western Jets captain, is set to join that list next year.
Tigers get ‘half a result’ By Lance Jenkinson It was a game that no side deserved to lose – and neither side did. Werribee Districts and Sunshine Kangaroos played out a thrilling draw in Western Region Football League division 1 at Soldiers Reserve on Saturday. Tigers coach Chris Gilham was left flat after game ended at 58 apiece, but he could not argue that it was not the right result. “It was a bit of a hollow feeling when you draw and not win, but we’ll take the two points and move on,” he said. “It was a neck-and-neck game. We had the scoring end early and had a little lead at the break, and they had it second quarter and came back at us … it was the same in the second half. “We defended quite well, as they did, against the wind. “It’s hollow because we were never behind in the game … but I’d say it was a fair result because they were coming hard at the end.” For Werribee Districts, it brought an end to its two-game losing streak. The Tigers were coming off heavy losses to top two sides Deer Park and Spotswood and needed to respond. 66 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 4, 2018
“We played two quality oppositions, so we weren’t getting too upset,” Gilham said. “We were showed up a little bit by Deer Park, who are the front runners of the competition and were too good for us. “We showed signs that we’re good enough to compete with these teams, but we need to put it together for four quarters. “That was the pleasing thing about today – we were able to string together four competitive quarters and get half a result.” Trent Lee was at the forefront of all that was good for Werribee Districts in the draw. The onballer played with controlled aggression, won the lion’s share of contested ball for his side and was a threat offensively. “He plays with a real hard edge,” Gilham said. “He got us surging forward quite a few times. “When there was a tackle to be made or a collision to be had, he was right there.” Werribee Districts moved up to third on the ladder. The Tigers will take to the road on Saturday for what could be a danger game against unpredictable Albion. “We’re not going to drop our guard with Albion – we’ve got a lot of respect for them,”
Gilham said. “They’re hard to beat at home and their best five players are as good as any team in the comp. “They probably shaped the final five last year, so they’re definitely dangerous. We’ve got to make sure we’re ready to go.” Elsewhere in division 1, Hoppers Crossing was tight defensively in holding St Albans to just five goals in a 26-point win. The Warriors remain fifth, level on wins with fourth-placed Altona. Wyndhamvale had a day to forget, going goal-less in a 114-point loss to Spotswood. In division 2, Manor Lakes won a thriller by two points over Newport Power to move up to fourth. Point Cook continued on its merry way with a 54-point win over Albanvale. The Bulldogs face a showdown with ladder leader Yarraville-Seddon at Saltwater Reserve this Saturday. In division 3, Wyndham Suns remain undefeated after a 43-point win over Sunshine Heights. The shock of the day was Point Cook Centrals’ stunning 120-point loss at the hands of Tarneit, with the premiership contenders failing to register a goal.
■ Sadly I note the passing of former Bulldogs player and Williamstown premiership player Mark Cross. The Bulldogs past players paid tribute to Mark last weekend with a presentation to his widow, Jill, and sons Joel, Shaun and Kane. Mark had a Midas touch with premierships, starting with the 1976 flag with the Seagulls, then being involved as either player or coach with four Red Cliffs victories in the Sunraysia league and then a three-peat with Mildura Imps. He also got Melbourne to two grand finals in the early ’90s as reserves coach.

Werribee rues lost chances after falling to Geelong Werribee has found Geelong too tough a nut to crack in the Victorian Football League this season. Two frustrating narrow losses to their rivals up the Princes Highway have put a spanner in the works of Werribee’s finals aspirations. Werribee lost Saturday’s meeting at GMHBA Stadium by 16 points, while their season opener in Torquay was even closer, losing by four. Both results were bitter pills to swallow. “We never seemed to be out of the game at all,” Werribee midfielder Ben Moloney said of the latest loss. “I think that’s why you could really see the disappointment in the rooms and feel it after the game. “We felt that was one that we could’ve won, similar to round one early in the year. “We had an opportunity to get back at them, get one on them after the first round, but we didn’t take it.” It was not a lack of intent, courage or belief that led to Werribee’s downfall. It was more
about a lack of polish, something that has eluded them far too often this season. “It was our own basic fundamental skill errors costing us and some decision making,” Moloney said. “It could’ve been a completely different year if we had’ve just tightened those screws a little bit. “That’s why the losses are harder to take because we know we’re capable of winning these games.” Sam Collins can do no more in his bid to return to the AFL ranks. The key defender was once again Werribee’s best. Moloney has played for three AFL-aligned clubs during his career, so he knows what a league footballer looks like, and he predicts a quick return to the big league for Collins. “I’d be very surprised if he’s at Werribee next year to be honest,” Moloney said. “I think he was unlucky not be back on an AFL list this year. “He’s a quality player and his efforts down back, his marking ability, consistency and
leadership has probably kept us in games where we could’ve been blown out of the water. “He’s an absolute star and off the field he’s a champion bloke and a great player.” Andrew Hooper kicked three Werribee goals, Josh Porter was a focal point of the attack with two and Nick Buykx bobbed up with two. Kurt Aylett was one of the hardest workers for Werribee, racking up 13 tackles, while hard nut Matthew Brett had a eye-catching defensive game, restricting Daniel Menzel to two goals. Werribee is a long way outside the top eight – three games and percentage with seven games remaining. That is no easy task for a side with just three wins out of 11 games. However, there is one thing you can take to the bank, Werribee will fight until it’s a mathematical impossibility, starting with Sunday’s game against Collingwood, which will be Moloney’s 100th game and Joe Maishman’s 50th. Werribee was gutsy in a 2-2 draw with finals-bound Mornington Peninsula in the Hockey Victoria women’s Vic League 1 at Werribee Hockey Centre on Saturday. The second-last Tigers are desperate to pick up points in a bid to steer clear of the relegation zone, so this kind of performance will be good for confidence. Chloe Pickersgill and Lynda Tivendale scored for the Tigers. In men’s Vic League 2, Werribee landed a significant blow in the race for finals berths. Werribee Bears will head into this weekend’s bye feeling on top of the world. The Bears have opened up a two-game break at the top of the NRL Victoria first-grade ladder after surviving a scare to beat Northern Thunder 26-24 at Seabrook Reserve on Saturday. The upcoming round will also be a bye week for Truganina Rabbitohs. The Rabbitohs are clinging to fourth spot after a 34-10 loss to Casey Warriors at Casey Fields on Saturday. Kiwi a top get for Bees By Lance Jenkinson Werribee City has reeled in a mid-season transfer window coup – one-time New Zealand international Jake Butler. Butler has arrived at the Bees with the ambition of helping the side earn promotion out of National Premier League 2 west. The 33-year-old scored on his Bees debut against Moreland Zebras two weeks ago and has played a significant role as a box-to-box midfielder. The Bees have won both of their games with Butler, including Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Langwarrin at Galvin Park. “There’s still lots of points up for grabs,” Butler said. “There’s no reason why we can’t make a strong push. Our team is well capable of it.” Butler has played overseas before, linking up with Tampines Rovers in the Singapore S-League, but he has always been drawn to playing in Australia. Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini made contact at the start of the season, but the time was not right.
Sabbadini was persistent, giving Butler a call ahead of the transfer window and finally landing his man. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” Butler said. “I should’ve come at the start of the season, but for a number of reasons that didn’t quite happen. “Sergio rang me again when the transfer window was open and we made it work. “I’m really enjoying it at the moment, so I’m glad I’ve decided to come over.” Butler has a near unmatched record when it comes to New Zealand national league football. As captain of Waitakere United, he led the team to four consecutive national titles. He also led the club to two Oceania Champions League titles, which qualified the team for two FIFA Club World Cups. The icing on the cake for Butler was getting three international caps for New Zealand. His national team debut came in a 1-0 win away to Saudi Arabia. “It wasn’t the easiest place to go and have your debut,” Butler said. “It was immensely hot, so it was a difficult game to play against a good opposition …
luckily enough we got the win that day and thoroughly enjoyed it.” For Werribee City, Butler will cover a lot of ground between the boxes, helping out both as a defender and creating incisions with his well-weighted passes on the attacking end. “The best thing about my game is my passing game, so hopefully I can unlock a few defences,” Butler said. Meanwhile, Hoppers Crossing remains stuck on the bottom of men’s state league 1 after a 3-1 home loss to Western Suburbs. Point Cook lost 5-4 to Moreland United in men’s state league 3, leaving it just three points above the relegation zone. Truganina Hornets moved into the promotion spots in men’s state league 4 after a 4-0 thrashing of Golden Plains. Mid-table West Point drew 1-1 with Melton Phoenix in men’s state league 5. In women’s state league 2, Hoppers Crossing beat Yarra Jets 8-1 win, with star striker Julia Budiongo-Batota netting five times and Mya Moran scoring a double. MOTOR Mazda CX-8 fills an Aussie niche By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Mazda Australia has plugged a hole in its SUV lineup by introducing the CX-8 Diesel. Potential buyers of the CX-9 seven-seater had wanted a diesel engine, but it’s only offered with a petrol unit. Sometimes they settled for a CX-9 petrol – but others went to a different marque that could offer a turbo-diesel, which obviously didn’t please Mazda Australia. The CX-8 is sort of a combination of the Mazdas CX-5 and CX-9, sharing the wheelbase of the 9 and the width of the 5. It’s shorter than the CX-9 overall and many components are unique to the CX-8. Interestingly, the CX-8 had only ever been intended for sale on the Japanese market. But Australia is highly regarded by Mazda’s head office, which eventually relented by making the CX-8 available Downunder. Only two grades are being offered – CX-8 Sport priced at $42,490 with two-wheel drive (the front wheels) and $46,490 with all-wheel drive; and CX-8 Asaki for $61,490 with all-wheel drive. Both models are well equipped, with the Asaki having Nappa leather trim, a Premium Bose 10-speaker sound system, advanced keyless entry, a remotely operated power tailgate, adaptive LED headlights, front foglights, a heated steering wheel, and sunshades on the rear door windows. The front seats in the Asaki are power operated, with six-way adjustment for the passenger and 10-way for the driver.

Added safety features on the Asaki are front parking sensors (both models have rear sensors) and a 360-degree camera. This is a good-looking vehicle, with the slick lines almost coupe-like at the rear. But if all seven seats are in use, there’s no space for a large suitcase to be carried upright in the boot. All CX-8s have a seven-inch infotainment screen that’s clear and easy to us. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto aren’t available at this stage, but are expected to arrive late this year. When that happens, it will be necessary for the system to be upgraded by a Mazda dealer. (Note: That this will apply to most other recent Mazda models; contact your dealer for details.) Power for both CX-8 models is courtesy Mazda’s well-known SkyActiv 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel. It produces up to 140 kW of power and an impressively high 450 Nm of torque, the latter available from 2000 rpm. All CX-8 Diesels have a six-speed automatic transmission.
Safety
Mazda CX-8 has yet to be tested by ANCAP. While not committing themselves at this stage, the Mazda Australian hierarchy appears confident it will receive the maximum five-star rating.
Driving
The CX-8 Diesel is relatively narrow inside and is best regarded as a four plus three – that is four adults and three children. There’s good leg and comfortable head room in all seats.

Mazda set up an excellent 350-plus kilometre drive program on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, running on an inland route from Noosa to Hervey Bay. It covered everything from peak hour (well, peak hour-ish) traffic and suburban roads to motorways and scenic hilly terrain, using sealed and dirt roads. Exactly the sort of running a family in their Mazda CX-8 Diesel would take on a weekend adventure trip. Despite the “Sport” in its name, this Mazda is certainly not a sports SUVR. It has suspension and steering set up in comfort mode. It handles
safely and predictably and you would have to be well over sensible speeds to get into trouble. That said, if you do see yourself as a keen driver you may care to look elsewhere. As is often the way, Australia’s coarse-chip roads create a fair bit of noise. Anywhere else, this is a vehicle that’s peaceful and relaxing to sit in. The turbo-diesel engine is nicely quiet at idle and from the outside is almost to petrol engine standards. Inside, the sound levels are nicely muted.
Response from the diesel is reasonably prompt with a minimum of lag. We found the six-speed automatic transmission to be in the correct gear virtually all the time.
Summing up
Mazda CX-8 diesel is an attractive-looking seven-seat SUV that seems sure to have good sales as it neatly fills gaps in the company’s lineup. You can now get Mazda CX in 3, 5, 8 or 9 format. Which may leave space for a CX-4? Who knows …
