John defies the odds By Charlene Macaulay The community is rallying behind a Wyndham family in its time of urgent need. John Carnevali, 45, has been left with a hypoxic brain injury and cognitive deficits after suffering a heart attack, cardiac arrest and stroke in the early hours of June 3. His brain was deprived of oxygen for about 20 minutes during the ordeal and his rehabilitation is slow. But John is already defying the odds and his family is heartened by the small, steady gains he is making every day. He is able to eat, drink and swallow, and is re-learning to walk and go to the toilet. His memory is patchy, often he thinks he’s in either 1992 or 2002 and forgets where he lives or how old he is.

His wife, Melissa, says the family is in a kind of “limbo”. “It can improve over time, but they’re [the doctors] saying to me he’s not going to be the same,” Melissa said. “It’s the worst kind of limbo – not knowing.” The family has been struck with a number of health concerns over the years. John has had golden staph, sepsis, two prior heart attacks, 11 stents and a total knee replacement in recent years. Melissa has had a pulmonary embolism and needed fertility treatment to have their son, Hunter, now 10, who has an intellectual disability and autism. In 2016, John’s 20-year-old niece, Hope, died on her front lawn in Hoppers Crossing after she was struck down with thunderstorm asthma. But Melissa says they have lived a charmed life ever since meeting each other on the dancefloor of Geelong’s Lyric nightclub when she was 19 and John was 24. “He’s my best friend,” she said. “We’ve been together 22 years and we always talk about how fortunate we are to have each other. “He’s talking to me at the moment, but it’s not the man that I know. He doesn’t remember where we met, he doesn’t remember how long we’ve been married, he doesn’t remember any of the special things that we’ve done together. He’s recognising me now and he’s stopped calling me the wrong name.” John is in Sunshine Hospital, where he’s likely to stay for a few more weeks before

being transferred to a rehabilitation facility. It’s unclear if he’ll ever be able to return home, but Melissa is determined to think positively. “He may not know what year it is or why he’s in the hospital, but his courage and strength are shining through in spades,” she said. “He’s going to be the one the doctors recall as that patient that shocked them all, I just know it. John is just so positive, he has such a fun and joking personality. He never gives up, he’s a fighter.” John, who works as a scaffolder and shop
steward, is well-known in the Wyndham community as a member of the Werribee Victorian Clay Target Club, the Little River Hotel Social Golf Club and the Victorian Waterski and Kite Flyer Association. He is also the under-12 Seabrook Sonics basketball coach. A GoFundMe page to help with the family’s medical and rehabilitation expenses has raised nearly $27,000 in less than two weeks. Chantel Poole, who set up the online fundraiser, said she was amazed by the number
of people who wanted to pitch in and help the family. “I’ve had the florist in Station Place ring me … she’s started up a donation tin, because he was a customer there,” she said. “I’ve had clinics ring and say they remember him and start fundraising, too.” The Italian Sports Club will host a fundraising event on July 28. Mercy maternity funding fears By Charlene Macaulay A Werribee GP has slammed the state government for failing to boost funding for maternity services at Werribee Mercy Hospital after a pregnant woman, due in December, was unable to secure a booking. Dr Joe Garra said he had been surprised to learn that the hospital’s maternity unit was already at capacity for December, with no places available with either the Team Maternity Care or Shared Maternity Care for that month. Dr Garra said the state government’s $85 million
expansion of Werribee Mercy Hospital should have included an expansion of maternity services. “Maternity is not an elective procedure. We don’t want women having … to drive in labour to Sunshine,” he said. “There will be babies popping out on the Ring Road. There has to be a clear plan about what this hospital will provide now – and in five and 10 years’ time.” Mercy Health health services chief executive Linda Mellors said Werribee Mercy did its best to accommodate every maternity booking, “however on occasion we do need to refer some

women to other hospitals”. “This happens when our maternity service is experiencing high demand over a short period or when a woman is assessed as having a very high-risk pregnancy,” she said. “From 2013-14 to 2015-16, Mercy Health fulfilled a three-year commitment with the Department of Health
and Human Services to increase the number of births by 20 per cent per year at Werribee Mercy Hospital.” Adjunct Professor Mellors said 3585 babies had been born at Werribee Mercy between July 1, 2017, and May 31, 2018. Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the government was giving the hospital the funds it needed to treat more patients than ever before. “We’re also working closely with Mercy Hospital on a detailed management plan to cater for a growing community and ensure all mothers who wish to use the service can do so,” she said.

She was a pageant veteran back in the Philippines and last week, Werribee’s Jaica Zacate tried her hand at the Miss World Victorian state final. Miss Zacate was among 28 contestants who competed for one of five Victorian places in the national finals last week, with judging based on evening wear and the contestants’ personalities. Although the 20-year-old failed to make it to the next stage, she’s keen to give it another go next year. “I was a bit sick, so it was a bit of a struggle,” she said. “It was a really great experience. “I just saw the ad and thought I’d give it a go. “Meeting the girls [was my favourite part], I’ve made so many friends and we’re actually going to catch up.” Miss Zacate grew up in the Philippines, where she used to sell fruit on the street and take part in pageants, before coming to Australia five years ago. She was brought up by a single mother who raised three girls on her own. Today, Miss Zacate is undertaking a bachelor of science (mathematics) and has her eyes set on working for NASA one day. She also sings, dances and plays the guitar and piano. The Miss World Australia final will be held in August. Wyndham residents owe more than $82.7 million in outstanding fines, new figures from the Sheriff’s Office reveal. Over the 2016-17 financial year, 26,523 residents failed to pay an infringement or multiple infringements by the due date, with the average debtor owing about $3121 in unpaid fines. The Wyndham area placed sixth in the state for unpaid fines. Casey residents took out the top spot, owing more than $144 million in outstanding fines, followed by Hume ($115.8 million) and Frankston ($101 million). Victorian Sheriff Warwick Knight said despite the high numbers, the number of outstanding fines had dropped by almost 13 per cent from the previous financial year as 115,705 fewer fines were issued over the same period. “It is important to deal with your fines as soon as possible to avoid additional penalties and the infringement becoming a warrant,” he said. “People who receive a fine can request an internal review, nominate a driver, apply for a payment plan or elect to have the matter heard by the court, and we encourage them to come and speak to us about their options.” To pay your fines, or get more information about your options, go to www.fines.vic.gov.au Charlene Macaulay

Wyndham’s parking fines soar By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council is handing out 91 parking fines a day on average and has almost surpassed the entire number of fines given out last year in just five months. Figures obtained by Star Weekly reveal that 14,554 parking fines totalling $955,254 were issued across the city between January 1 and June 8. Point Cook’s Main Street, Watton Street in Werribee, Sayers Road in Truganina, the Tarneit train station access road and the
Hoppers Crossing Shopping Centre carpark are parking fine hotspots. In comparison, the council slapped drivers with 17,751 fines for the entire year in 2017, bringing in more than $1.48 million. The council has received more than $3.88 million from parking fines since January 1, 2015. According to the council’s financial management quarterly report for March, the council partially attributes its $18.7 million surplus position to an “increased focus on local
law enforcement resulting in higher statutory fees and fines, mainly in traffic management and prosecutions�. Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the number of fines issued was comparable to those of other similar-sized municipalities. Mr Thorpe said the council employed four dedicated parking officers, who are deployed to locations across the city in response to requests or complaints from the community and to areas experiencing high levels of parking issues.
Meanwhile, the council will shut down its 77-space Gateway carpark on the corner of Synnot Street and Duncans Road in October to make way for the construction of its first catalyst site, a $49.5 million 12-storey hotel, education precinct and carpark development. Mr Thorpe said the council created two carparks totalling 351 spaces – at Cherry Street and the top end of Watton Street – so public parking was not reduced during construction of the catalyst sites.
Schooled in cool tech A virtual reality area, robots and a high-tech lab complete with a 3D laser printer will school the next generation using cutting-edge technology. That’s just some of the features in the new Wyndham Tech School, which officially opened its doors on Monday. The multi-million dollar facility, at Victoria University’s Werribee campus, includes design studios and simulation and collaboration hubs fitted out with state-of-the-art technology to give secondary school students advanced education and training in science, technology, engineering and maths. Students from 18 Wyndham partner schools – including Baden Powell P-9 College, Wyndham Central Secondary College and the Islamic College of Melbourne – will be able to use audio visual and virtual reality facilities and high-tech STEM equipment to experiment and develop projects, and design wearable technology. The hands-on programs are aligned with
industries predicted to experience economic and employment growth. School director Brenda Frisk said she was keen for the school to bridge the gap between education and industry. “What’s unique about tech schools is we’re that central hub where we can speak the language with the industry, we speak the language with education, and there’s so many possibilities and opportunities available by working together,� Ms Frisk said. Education Minister James Merlino said the Wyndham Tech School would form an important link between schools, TAFEs, universities and industry. “We need students to be ready for the jobs of the future and that’s why we’re investing in tech schools so they can get the hands-on learning with technology they need,� Mr Merlino said. The life of Khan As Intaj Khan awaits sentencing, Charlene Macaulay takes a look at the enigmatic Wyndham councillor’s story With his $70 million-plus fortune, distinctive red Ferrari with personalised number plates and $10 million proposed Tarneit mansion, Intaj Khan has attracted his fair share of attention from the community. He’s been under close scrutiny by the Local Government Inspectorate in his two terms as a Wyndham councillor. Last year, he was suspended for four weeks following comments he made to the media and online. Next month, he will be sentenced after pleading guilty to three counts of failing to disclose companies in which he held office during the ordinary return period; three counts of failing to disclose companies in which he held a financial interest; and two counts of failing to submit ordinary returns between February, 2016, and February, 2017. Even if convicted, the offences are not considered cause for disqualification and he will remain a councillor. All this has played out in the public arena – but what many do not know is the rags-to-riches tale that precedes these recent events. Born July 25, 1983, in Sikri, a small town in India, Cr Khan was the oldest of seven children and was schooled through the public system there. He came to Australia in December 1998 with a diploma of electrical engineering under his belt and $400 to his name, relying on money from relatives to fund a bachelor of engineering technology. He worked in a bakery, installed security cameras and was a door-to-door salesman selling mobile phones before using $100,000 of savings to set up the Western Institute of Technology (WIT).

In 2012, he bought the failed Mowbray College. After unsuccessfully trying to establish his own high school on that site, he sold the property last year for $12 million. He used the profits from WIT and the Mowbray sale to develop an extensive property portfolio. He owns large parcels of land across Rockbank, among other areas. Now, in his second term as a Wyndham councillor, he says he’s heartbroken by the charges brought against him.

Kevin Hillier has found not all plastic is created equal
S
o it seems we can live in a society where all sorts of dodgy behaviours are acceptable, but don’t you dare take your groceries home from the supermarket in a plastic bag. I have embraced recycling and my family might even suggest I am verging on recruitment to the Recycling Police, but the absurdity of this initiative from our major supermarkets leaves me mystified. I can’t take home my complete shop in a plastic bag but I can buy all sorts of products all wrapped in plastic and I can still put my bananas or apples or capsicums in the plastic bags provided for that purpose. Obviously there are degrees of plasticity that I am not aware of that allows for this seemingly double standard. If I had a home chemistry kit, I could perhaps discover the differences between the various supermarket plastics, which might explain why some are still OK and others have been banished. I have actually noticed that more and more fresh produce is pre-packed in plastic. This begs the question: what is the point of banning the bags but not all the other plastic
in the store? A store that still sells plastic cups, cutlery and plates and a dozen other similar items. This isn’t only a double standard, it is Mick Jagger-size lip service. While I am sure it will make an impact of some kind on landfill, I think it sends a very mixed message. I wish I had shares in the company that manufactures the polypropylene bags now used as I, like many others I have seen, have been forced to buy quite a few recently due to forgetfulness and the quantity of my shopping. The bags are made of a more user friendly plastic substance but it is plastic nevertheless, and – from what I have read – comes with similar baggage. The fact that it is reusable is a plus, but don’t be surprised if someone finds its dirty polypropylene secret sometime soon. Strikes me this could be a case of six of one problem and half a dozen of another. I think we will eventually discover that the more non-degradable plastic in all of this is the smile on the faces of those people selling us – sorry, telling us – this is good for the planet. ■

Police are appealing for assistance following an affray at a hotel in Watton Street, Werribee on June 9 about 4pm. Police said a group of men entered the sports bar and allegedly armed themselves with pool cues before a fight broke out, which resulted in several people being injured. Police in the Hobsons Bay, Wyndham and Maribyrnong areas have warned residents about an increase in trailer thefts. New development for Mambourin By Alesha Capone A developer has unveiled plans to build a new estate on Greens Road, Mambourin, which is set to become home to an estimated 12,500 residents. Country Garden Australia, the Australian branch of the Chinese development firm Country Garden Holdings, last week announced its “vision” for the Windermere community. A planning permit has been approved for the development, which will include more
than 4500 house lots set on 363 hectares. Plans include a mix of housing including terrace and medium-density sites, about 5000 square metres of commercial office space, 6000 square metres of retail, two public primary schools and one public secondary school. There is also a proposal to build a private school. Community centres, indoor recreation centres, a childcare facility and a swim school are among the proposed community facilities, along with three kilometres of walking paths across 50 hectares of open space. In a statement, Country Garden Australia
said it was negotiating the types of sports facilities to be constructed in the estate – including ovals for AFL and cricket and netball and tennis courts – with Wyndham council. Country Garden Australia’s chief executive, Dr Guotao Hu said Windermere would feature “four hectares of stunning wetlands to be admired from a viewing platform with an abundance of native plants to attract local birdlife”. “A further seven hectares of beautiful parklands will be home to sports grounds,
playgrounds, exercise equipment and barbecues for the entire community to play outdoors,” he said. “Windermere’s village hub, which will include a supermarket and a boutique range of speciality and convenience shopping, will provide for our residents’ everyday needs.” Expressions of interest are open for the first land release at Windermere, comprising 47 land lots ranging in size from 350 square metres to 723 square metres. Dani’s marathon effort If you think you’ve got a killer week ahead, spare a thought for Point Cook’s Dani McLaren. The 39-year-old primary school teacher will run seven marathons in seven days in seven states as part of the Bravehearts’ 777 challenge. Bravehearts is a national child protection advocacy group that aims to educate, empower and protect Australian kids from sexual assault. It’s the fourth year running Ms McLaren has taken on the challenge, and she’s close to reaching her $10,000 fundraising goal, having brought in $8550 already. This year, her eight-year-old daughter will join in for seven kilometres of the Melbourne leg of the challenge. Ms McLaren said she’ll keep doing the challenge as long as children are being sexually assaulted. “There’s still occurrences happening daily of children being abused, so we need to keep
spreading that message and hopefully very soon it all ends,” she said. “It’s something that’s occurring too often. “Each year, so many survivors come out and thank us and say, ‘you’ve given me a reason to keep going’, and I think that’s a real big push. “I personally find it a mental challenge. Physically, I’m lucky, I pull up OK every year … but it is a matter of being smart and building up [my fitness], running each week.” Ms McLaren hosted a colour run at the end of last year, and sold fresh mangoes and running socks to help raise her fundraising tally. Salvos step up as demand rises By Charlene Macaulay More people in need are turning to the Salvos than ever before. Wyndham City branch captain Kim Haworth said the Salvos had helped 1378 Wyndham families in need in the 2017-18 financial year, giving out more than $381,000 in emergency relief. That was an increase of more than $100,000 on the previous financial year. “Our population is greatly increasing and so is the need in our community,” Ms Haworth
said. “This is clearly reflected in the pressure placed on our service and other agencies in the city of Wyndham.” In one case, a woman and her daughter came to the Salvos for help after fleeing home due to domestic violence. They were provided clothing, basic household items and food. The Salvos also paid the woman’s nursing registration to help her return to work as a nurse and begin to rebuild her life. “This is just one story of the many people we assist through our community support service here in Wyndham,” Ms Haworth said.

“We have a dedicated team of staff and volunteers who seek to provide hope by helping people when they need it most. “It’s such a privilege to journey with people and help them get back on their feet.” Ms Haworth thanked Wyndham residents for their generosity during the recent Red
Shield Appeal, which collected about $52,000 in Wyndham. Money raised during the appeal goes towards a range of community services, including emergency housing for people in crisis, drug and alcohol rehabilitation and financial counselling. “We are blown away again by the incredible generosity of our local community and the dedication of our volunteers in getting out there to collect much-needed funds,” Ms Haworth said. “We couldn’t do what we do in Wyndham city without the Red Shield Appeal.”
Cruising for a snoozing Thomas Carr College students will sleep rough for one night next month to get a small glimpse into the struggles homeless people face. The school is hosting its seventh annual Winter Sleep Out on July 20, with more than 100 students across years seven to 12 expected to take part. Thomas Carr principal Andrew Watson said the annual fundraiser was inspired by the St Vincent de Paul CEO Sleepout, which Dr Watson participated in last week. Similarly, all funds raised through the Thomas Carr fundraiser will go to St Vincent de Paul. “It’s usually a very cold night. The students sleep out in the gym and there’s no heating, so they do get to experience what it’s like for a homeless person not to have shelter,” Dr Watson said. “They have a very basic meal for dinner – what we usually do is have the St Vincent de
Paul soup van call around and the students would have the same sort of soup and bread that they provide for those in need. “The rationale behind it is students can experience what it is that a homeless person experiences, develop some empathy. “They’ll eventually become the decision-makers and hopefully will be able to resolve this homelessness problem that we experience.” Charlene Macaulay

Crusaders continue campaign for charity

These superheroes don’t wear capes, but their contribution to cancer research is monumental. The Cancer Crusaders, a Point Cook-based auxiliary for the Royal Children’s Hospital, have raised more than $400,000 for the hospital since they started fundraising less than five years ago. The group of 12 – with help from their family and friends – now funds a brain tumour clinical trial at the hospital and do their utmost to raise $100,000 a year to keep the trial running. Cancer Crusader Ruth Murray said when the group started funding this project, less than 7 per cent of children with brain tumours were offered the chance to take part in the trial. Now, 94 per cent of eligible children have that chance. “We haven’t actually been touched by cancer, we do it in celebration of having healthy children,” Ms Murray said. “We’re a small group of passionate people trying to make a difference – in treatments and in outcomes.” The group works tirelessly throughout the year to bring in the dough for sick children in need, hosting stalls at the Royal Children’s Hospital, bake sales, a Christmas market night, annual dinner dance and some high teas. Their most recent dinner dance netted more than $22,500. Earlier this week, the group also received a $10,000 Commonwealth Bank grant towards their cause. “It’s the easiest $10,000 we’ve raised,” Ms Murray laughed. “We’re ecstatic. It takes the pressure off this year’s fundraising.”

Rape reform on trial By Kyra Gillespie Students at Westbourne Grammar School are refusing to let their age limit their ability to make a difference. Tasha Gacutan, Kane Arnold, Giselle Puno, Eleni Moritz, Shams Albrefkany, and Gianluca Vavala are one team among 20 participating in this year’s YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament. At just 16 and 17 years old, these passionate young people will take to state Parliament chambers on Thursday, July 5 to debate their bill titled Rape Trial Reform. “When we found out that only three per cent of [rape] perpetrators are convicted in Victoria we knew this was the issue we wanted to tackle,” Tasha said. “We want to mend a flawed system to lay the foundation for a future where victims can feel like they can report and actually get justice. “This is a very emotional topic, so we have to be very strong and know our stuff.” The Victoria Youth Parliament involves young people aged between 16 and 25 designing a piece of legislation, or bill, on an issue they are passionate about which is tabled and debated before a youth parliament. More than 25 Youth Parliament Bills have been adopted into state legislation since the program began just over 30 years ago. The Westbourne team’s bill will focus on minimising the emotional harm suffered by victims of rape during court proceedings and boosting the number of convictions in Victoria. This is proposed to be achieved by implementing a number of reforms, including state-funded counselling services for victims, overhauling unreasonable cross-examination tactics and giving victims the choice to appear in court to give evidence or use pre-recording options.

“Victorian victims of rape are in desperate need for improved courtroom conditions,” Shams said. “The trial process continues to be a stressful situation for many victims and can often lead to re-traumatisation. “We believe that by reducing a victims’ exposure to the criminal justice process itself, we can help minimise the risk of damage to them.”
The Westbourne group said the amount of research involved for their bill made them even more determined to tackle the sensitive topic. “It made us realise that if it’s that hard for us to find the right information then it must be a million times harder for the victims who have to go through it,” Kane said. Big bill to build up the west Nearly $11 billion in schools, roads and other infrastructure is needed over the next 13 years to bring services among Melbourne’s outer suburbs on par with other parts of Melbourne. That’s the word from a new Interface Councils report, One Melbourne or Two?, which found that Melbourne’s 10 interface councils – which includes Wyndham – had welcomed more than 440,000 new residents over the past decade, and are set to accommodate 765,000 more between now and 2031. The report found that by 2031: • $760 million is needed to build enough primary schools for the anticipated 85,110 primary school students across the 10 council areas. A further $720 million is needed for secondary campuses, and $100 million for kindergartens; • $8.124 billion is needed in new and upgraded public transport infrastructure; • $1.175 billion is needed for 29 new hospital buildings and 2180 hospital beds; and • About 265,000 new jobs will be needed. It recommended providing more jobs closer to home and creating walkable neighbourhoods to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce car dependency. Whittlesea mayor Kris Pavlidis said urgent action must be taken. “Residents in the outer suburbs have increasingly struggled to access vital services and critical infrastructure,” Cr Pavlidis said. Play space overhaul space strategy was aimed at bringing those play spaces up to scratch. “[The audit] found that the standard of equipment in play spaces varies significantly throughout Wyndham,” Cr Shaw said. “In some cases, the quality of infrastructure is very high, while in other areas the equipment and amenity could be improved.” The draft strategy is open for community consultation until July 22. Mr Cyril Roy Patterson (Mr Badminton), has been selected as Werribee Shire’s Citizen of the Year. Mr Patterson was selected last week to receive the Community Service Award sponsored by the Werribee Chamber of Commerce.
The Wyndhamvale Residents Association will seek an inquiry into an alleged incident at the CSR Readymix quarry in Wests Rd, Werribee, two months ago where it is claimed a large rock was blasted into a car about one kilometre away. Mr Peter Maynard, Association secretary and a candidate for the West Ward seat on the Werribee Council, told the Banner a large rock was hurled through the air from the quarry.
Werribee Residents Against Toxic Dump has been forced to issue a statement disassociating itself from Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Party. WRATD’s statement followed reports in newspapers last week stating that One Nation would support WRATD’s opposition to the planned prescribed waste facility in Wyndham.
Werribee Racing Club fears it has been abandoned after the industry’s governing authority rejected a $4.5 million application for track reconstruction. A delegation from the club, including chairman Alan Harvey and chief executive David Horsburgh, met Racing Victoria officials at Flemington on June 18 to plead its case.

Last week I was joined in Canberra by fellow Councillors Henry Barlow and Mia Shaw to attend the national meeting of all Australian Councils. This year’s gathering was very important given it will be the last time Councils can join together to decide what advocacy we will be taking to the imminent Federal Election. Councillors and staff also had a number of very high level meetings with MP’s and Ministers from both sides of politics to advocate for Wyndham’s needs. We successfully had motions passed by all Australian Councils to support permanent commitments from the Federal Government to fund their share of 15 hours of kindergarten; recognition of growth cities like Wyndham and the need for funding and programs to recognise the unique role we play; advocating for a national response to road and rail freight problems and opportunities. We also supported other motions that impact on the quality of life of local communities – particularly those of us living in Australia’s interface communities. We also met with the Minister for Environment, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and many others while in Canberra as part of a very busy meeting schedule. MY WYNDHAM Michelle Gardiner was one of the first people to call Point Cook Gardens estate home and is thrilled to have seen the area grow around her. The singer sat down with Charlene Macaulay to talk about her family, music and Point Cook. What is your connection to Wyndham?
What’s your favourite place to go for a coffee of meal?
We (me and husband Joel) moved to Point Cook in 2002. It was a new, growing area, and there was nothing – there were no schools, no shopping centre down there at Sanctuary Lakes. There was probably about five houses. I grew up in Gladstone Park. We were about 20 when we bought the block in 2000 – we weren’t even engaged or anything! It was here or Bundoora. Both were a similar distance from where our parents were … we liked it here. It was closer to the coastal area and we liked the idea of the developments that were coming. It suited our vision of having a family and having convenience around us.
The Brook is the scene on a Friday night. Rendeavous is a really good place for the family to go for a casual dinner, and Jacksons on K is gorgeous, as well. How did you get into music?
You and your husband met young. Yes, we met when I was 18, we married at 22 and have two girls – one’s about to turn 11 (Chloe), and the other is eight (Teagan). What has it been like to see Point Cook grow around you? It’s been exciting. Now it’s like we don’t actually have to go far to reach things, we’ve got so many facilities in our community. We rarely hit the traffic. What’s your favourite thing about living here? I think it’s got a great sense of community. There are live music events at The Brook and

things like that and on a Friday night, there’s the same sort of people coming each time and it’s becoming a social group. The pop-up park that was happening in Werribee and Point Cook … there’s a lot of involvement around those sorts of things, and that makes you feel like you’re home and welcome.
I grew up with my dad playing guitar and singing around the campfire. I would always get up and sing one of his old rock ’n’ roll songs or country songs. Between the ages of 14 to 17, I entered talent quests. I was in a singing school and did performances and stuff like that. I won a talent quest and made an album. That was a really intense experience and it sort of drove me away a bit. By then, I’d met my husband and I had a job at Village Roadshow as a PA and was so focused on being a wife and a mother. When my second daughter turned one, I was at that stage where I thought: “What am I going to do with the rest of my life?” I rang up the Universal School of Music and I would go for my half-hour lesson each week. It led to gigging at Gypsy Road at Point Cook … then I got another gig at Customs House in Williamstown and have been either singing or managing the bookings there for three years now. I’ve branched out into the Hoppers Club, The Park, The Brook, Spottiswoode Hotel and the Geelong Football Club. I was the support act for Anthony Callea at the pop-up park. I perform in a duo, a trio and a five-piece band.

VU Polytechnic – where excellence is the stock in trade Amid a shortage of trades skills, with many employers unable to fill positions, many students with an interest in pursuing a trades career can feel stranded or misdirected into university pathways because, well, “that’s just the way things are”. VU Polytechnic, the TAFE division of Victoria University, has a superb list of Vocational Education and Training (VET) study options to help. They include bricklaying, construction (building and estimating), building design (architectural), building surveying, cabinet making, carpentry, joinery, electrotechnology, engineering, fabrication trade, mechanical trade, engineering technology, furniture finishing, furniture making, industrial automation and control, joinery, plumbing, civil construction, signs and graphics. Bryce Williamson is a former VU Polytechnic student who has gained much from taking the VET path. He studied certificate II in plumbing (preapprenticeship course), upskilled to certificate IV in plumbing and services and became the winner of the 2017 Energy Safe Victoria Award.

Max Augerinos, who returned to the Werribee line-up for the first time after a knee reconstruction, praised his side’s attention to detail. “It was a pretty emphatic win,” he said. “It stems down to everyone focusing on what they had to bring for the team and what they had to do. “It was about being a pressure team and just building from there. “We just did all the little things right.” The most pleasing aspect for Werribee was its total 120 minute effort. The side has shown that its best is good enough to compete with any team in the competition, but it was a matter of sustaining the effort over the course of a game. There could be no question marks about that on this occasion as they put it all together for the full match. “We’ve played some seriously good footy this season, but just a bit too patchy,” Augerinos said. “That’s something we can take from this game, that we can do it for four quarters.

It was all going to plan for the Tigers, leading Spotswood by six points at half-time at Soldiers Reserve. After half-time, they were out-gunned 13 goals to five to lose by 46 points. Bees put it all together By Lance Jenkinson Werribee City coach Sergio Sabbadini had no hesitation labelling Saturday’s 4-2 win over Moreland Zebras as “by far” his side’s best win of the National Premier League 2 west season. The Bees produced a brand of football to be proud of, dictating proceedings for most of the 90 minutes at CB Smith Reserve and securing a memorable away win at a tough venue against a side that began the round three spots and six points above them on the ladder. “It was a great win,” Sabbadini said. “We set up to exploit their weaknesses and it worked perfectly. We had 11 good players, so it was fantastic.” Werribee City introduced new signing Jake Butler with immediate impact. Butler, a one-time Kiwi international who has played professionally in New Zealand and Singapore, fitted in nicely on limited preparation. He was a commanding force in the middle of the park, dictating the tempo of the game, and scored the game’s opening goal after 12 minutes. Jay Kelly doubled Werribee City’s lead in the 33rd minute and Carlin Feely made it 3-0 on 70 minutes. Then came a few heart palpitations for the Werribee City faithful when Moreland scored twice in the space of four minutes. The second goal prompted a change in thinking from the Bees. “We basically controlled the game apart from about four minutes when they scored two goals,” Sabbadini said. “They scored one goal against the run of play, so we thought that we won’t change anything. “Then they scored the second goal, which was another weird sort of a goal, so we decided to put the shutters up and close the game down.” With Werribee City in lockdown and the Moreland players trying their utmost to find an equaliser, the hosts were exposed at the back. Trevor Ssemakula took full advantage to score on the break for the Bees and put the game to bed. Butler was the standout for Werribee City in the midfield. Cameron Davies was resolute in defence and George Slefendorfas provided spark up front. Back-to-back wins have Werribee City back in the promotion mix. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ After the tragic death of a young Hoppers Crossing football player last week, parents, teammates, friends and the broader football community came together on Sunday at Hogans Road Reserve to acknowledge a young man’s sad passing and to embrace each other on the road to recovery. The club became a place to gather and talk and grieve for those coming to terms with the loss. That says a lot about the club and those in charge. Suicide is a topic we all struggle to explain and understand, but it is unfortunately becoming something that is more prevalent. We can all only do our best to be there for those who may need us. BeyondBlue: 1300 224 636 ■ Celebrity spotting at Chatterbox Cafe in Watton Street during the week revealed former Western Bulldog and West Coast Eagle Josh Hill was grabbing one of Sal’s finest brews on his way to work for MatchWorks. Josh is living in Spotswood, home to several former AFL players, and is playing in the VFL for the Northern Blues as well as doing some coaching with the Carlton women’s team. While the chill of Melbourne is not his favourite, he told me he is very settled. ■ Another couple of West Aussies were in town last weekend for a reunion of Bulldog past players involved in the 1997 and ’98 preliminary finals sides. Todd Curley and Danny Southern were key players in their time at Whitten Oval. Todd is still involved in football, coaching South Fremantle in the WAFL, while Danny has been working with young indigenous men for a few years. Bulldog fans usually feel that ’97 was the one that got away, while a lot of players believe ’98 was the year the team was at its best. Curley, though, cited 1999 as the year he looks back on as a missed opportunity, as the Dogs were the best defensive team in the competition. ■ The reunion was a resounding success with the likes of West, Romero, Hudson, Martin, Kellett, Minton Connell, Smith, Liberatore, Croft, Dimattina, Powell and Kretiuk rubbing shoulders with Casey, Abbey, Whitten and Morrison. It was also great to see another former champion – Laurie Sandilands – in the room, as part of a visit from the Gold Coast. Laurie, a former club captain and one of the first players to go into media, looks fit and relaxed.

Hoppers Crossing claimed a major scalp in bringing down Altona by 11 points in a hard-fought Western Region Football League division 1 encounter at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday. The in-form Warriors have strung together three wins in a row to move back among the contending teams. While the Warriors are still in fifth place, they are just one game and percentage behind a logjam of four teams – Deer Park, Spotswood, Altona and Werribee Districts – with 7-2 records. Hoppers Crossing’s victory came on the back of its water-tight defence. The Warriors only needed nine goals for a winning score because it held Altona to just seven in a stellar defensive performance. Hoppers Crossing will be keen to make it four wins on the trot when it hosts St Albans at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday. One of the big losers of the weekend was Werribee Districts.

In-form Rayner is running toward an Olympic dream

Cross country runner Jack Rayner is enjoying career-best form. The Western Athletics product has taken out victories at the Great Ocean Road Running Festival, Launceston 10-kilometre race and Victorian Cross Country Championships 10-kilometre to kick-start his winter program. Rayner has taken his running to another level in the past three years, coinciding with him linking up with specialist distance running coach Nick Bideau at the Melbourne Track Club. “It’s probably the best form I’ve been in since I started running,” Rayner said. “I’d say mostly it’s down to joining the Melbourne Track Club in 2016 and new training I’ve been doing. “There’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, it’s not just going for easy runs, it’s actually really hard training day in day out. “I’ve been injury free and been able to build
a big base up, which is starting to show now through my racing.” Rayner has fitted in seamlessly at the Melbourne Track Club. The 22-year-old from Altona has thrived in an elite program, alongside some top middle and long distance runners. Having the expertise of Bideau at the helm has certainly helped. “It’s coached by Nick Bideau, who is probably one of the best distance coaches in Australia,” Rayner said. “He’s been around for so long and knows exactly what to do in any situation. “There’s so many guys to train with all the time and that’s pushed me along and taken me to another level. “That’s one of the main reasons why I’ve improved so much.” Picking up gold medals at the Launceston 10km, which he won in a Western Athletics club record time, and the Victorian Cross
Tigers in new challenge By Lance Jenkinson Werribee Masters Football Club fielded its first ever women’s team on Saturday. The Tigers are celebrating their 35th anniversary this season, but it is ushering in a new era with the addition of the women’s over 30s side. It was a hugely successful start for the Tigers women’s team, holding Coburg scoreless in the season opener at Wyndhamvale South Oval in a 67-point win. No matter what the result on this day, it was always going to be a landmark day for the club. “It was a massive day for the club,” Tigers coach Kerry Saunders said. “It’s an initiative they’ve jumped on board with, which has been really good. “All the guys down at the club are excited about it too. “We’ve trained on the Tuesday night for the past few weeks alongside them and they’re keen to interact.” Werribee’s first outing will be remembered for its incredible accuracy in front of goal. The Tigers booted 11.1 – their only blemish coming in the second quarter. Sondra Rometta kicked four goals in the rout, while Tara Crisp added three. It was a dominant Tigers team from go to whoa. With so many players new to the game, Saunders did not know what to expect going into game one. “I had players that I still hadn’t met before the game on Saturday,” she said. The growth of women’s football in the west has been huge in recent years. At the elite level, the Western Bulldogs won the AFL Women’s competition. The Western Region Football League started up its own competition after a year amalgamated with the Essendon District Football League. There is now VFL Women’s teams at Williamstown and the Western Bulldogs. Werribee’s decision to start up an over 30s women’s team in the Victorian Metropolitan Superules League fills a void in the market. “It gives them a chance to go, ‘you know what, I missed the boat 20 years ago, but I’m going to have a crack at it and enjoy it along the way’,” Saunders said. There were whispers going around that the inaugural season would not have a grand final. While Werribee’s priority is to promote football in a fun environment, the players did take exception to the fact they may not be playing for anything other than pride. The top two sides will play off for a premiership at the end of the season. “It’s about fun and learning, it’s about getting out there and giving it a go,” Saunders said. “But you should’ve heard them the other night when they said there might not be a grand final and the players said ‘why are we playing for?’
Country Championships 10km were huge for Rayner. Both events have proven a tough nut to crack, but he managed to swoop on both in the past month. It took a gutsy effort for Rayner to take out his first state title, shrugging off a determined challenge from Andy Buchanan with 500 metres to run. “It was such a tough race the whole way,” Rayner said. “It was down to the one little hill at the end when I started to make my move and went all out from there and got the better of him.” Rayner, who dreams of qualifying for the world championships and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, will head to the national championships in Brisbane this August with confidence. Werribee Devils’ play-off hopes took a plunge after a heartbreaking 100-98 loss to Corio Bay Stingrays in the Big V basketball men’s state championship at Eagle Stadium on Sunday. Not even eye-catching performances from imports Konor Kulas, who scored 30 points to go with 11 rebounds, Bryan Nagy, who had 15 points, six rebounds and six assists,and Deng Chan, with 23 points, could save the Devils from defeat. With six games remaining, the Devils will need to make every post a winner if they are to make a late charge to the play-offs. In women’s division 1, Werribee Devils easily accounted for Chelsea Gulls in a 73-57 victory. A sixth consecutive win has the Devils riding high in fourth spot.

Westbourne Grammarians claimed a crucial 17-point win over Swinburne University in the Victorian Amateur Football Association division 3 at St James Park. The in-form Warriors moved up to fourth on the ladder on the back of their fourth consecutive win. Patrick O’Brien capped off a best-on-ground display for the Warriors with a goal, while Ali Eqbal was superb with four majors. In the Geelong and District Football League, Werribee Centrals ran out of petrol in the second half of a 32-point loss to Bell Post Hill at Myers Reserve on Saturday. The Centurions led by five points at half-time, but were out-gunned nine goals to three in the second half.
Hockey
Werribee was irrepressible on the road in a 4-1 win over Bayside in the Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 2. Sam Huxtable proved unstoppable in attack, scoring all four goals for the Tigers. Three consecutive wins has the Tigers back in the finals hunt. In women’s Vic League 1, Werribee played out a nil-all draw with Casey. The Tigers are struggling in third-last spot on the ladder.

“It’s going to be an unofficial grand final, so the top two will play off and there is scoring, but the ears pricked up and there were bristles as soon as they mentioned there would possibly be no grand final. “We want to win, we’re not just in this for full-on entertainment, we’re in for the long haul. Yes there will be fun along the way and a lot of socialising, but the priority is to win.”
Judging by the round one victory, Werribee could well be in the premiership mix come season’s end. The Tigers have worked hard for two-and-a-half months on the training track and built a competitive playing list, so there is no reason why they cannot mount a challenge at the end of the season. “We’re dead set keen, we’re here to win.”---
