A Hoppers Crossing resident who has dedicated her career to helping those in need has been recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday honour. Former Uniting Wyndham chief executive Carol Muir has been honoured with a Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to social welfare. Ms Muir said she was humbled to have received the honour. She said one of the greatest achievements of her career was helping to secure $15 million in state government funding for the H3 Wyndham Alliance to help more than 1700 people doing it tough in the area. “But in terms of achievements and career, sometimes it’s the smallest things that are wonderful,” she said. “When you work with vulnerable people, they have to make decisions and something that may seem really tiny for somebody else is a massive achievement that they might make. Those things are so important.” Ms Muir, who retired in October last year, said she wanted to keep working for the community and was considering her options. Charlene Macaulay
Classroom crush concern By Charlene Macaulay A Hoppers Crossing primary school that is using the foyer of its gym as a classroom is one of many schools suffering from space constraints due to Wyndham’s growing population. Tarneit Liberal candidate Glenn Goodfellow said he had been astounded to see that Cambridge Primary School, which was designed for 550 pupils, had more than 1000 enrolled. “To accommodate these students they are bringing in portable classrooms … [that] are placed on their oval and occupy the open space
the students use to run and play,” he said. “I was amazed to see that classes are also held in a foyer of a gym – surely this should not be happening in 2018.” Cambridge Primary School was contacted for comment. Mr Goodfellow said Cambridge was just one example of schools “busting at the seams” and relying on portable classrooms. “While we need to build new schools, we seem to forget about the good schools that have been around for many years and require continuing support,” he said. Tarneit Labor candidate Sarah Connolly said
a reliance on portables was among many issues principals and school leadership teams in the Tarneit electorate had raised with her. “I have spoken to certain schools about the number of portables they currently have and the need to invest in more permanent building structures,” she said. “I will work closely with these schools to ensure that these are delivered. “The new schools Labor is building will look and feel different to the ones I attended. “All new schools are designed so that they can grow with their communities, including through future upgrades and relocatable buildings.”

Greens candidate Beck Sheffield-Brotherton said she was concerned by the reliance on portable classrooms. “Many of our schools are too large and the proliferation of portable classrooms is crowding school grounds,” she said. She said that while it was unlikely she would be elected in the November state election, she would push for the re-election of western metropolitan MP Huong Truong. “We need more parliamentarians who will push for fair, needs-based funding rather than throwing funds at marginal seats regardless of need,” she said.

A group of commuters will take to the steps of Parliament next week to protest the lack of parking at Tarneit train station. Organiser Arnav Sati said he had invited Wyndham councillors, local state election candidates and MPs to the June 20 protest to highlight the shortage of carparking spaces for V/Line’s second busiest station. “The huge population growth, coupled with poorly planned basic infrastructure, short-sightedness into future growth and negligible support from the state government has resulted in this problem in the first place and now continuous neglect has turned it into a crisis,” he said. “Residents of Tarneit are being penalised from all sides. There are no parking spaces left after 7.30am.” Mr Sati said to add to the pain, the bus timetable only runs every 40 minutes and is not synced with the train timetable, rendering it an unhelpful option. He said commuters feel forced to park illegally so that they can catch their train. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Wyndham council has fined more than 2921 commuters for parking along the Leakes Road entry to Tarneit station since July 1, 2015, with a further 985 fines slapped on commuters parking in the streets adjacent to Williams Landing station in the same period. At last week’s council meeting, Mr Sati asked why the council continued to fine commuters at Tarneit train station despite the obvious parking issues in the area. Stephen Thorpe, the council’s city operations director, said residents did not have the right to park illegally if they could not find a parking spot.

Neighbouring councils back soccer bid Wyndham council’s bid to be home to one of two new A-League soccer teams has received a vote of confidence from its neighbours. On Friday, mayor Peter Maynard hosted fellow western suburbs mayors Margaret Giudice (Brimbank), Cuc Lam (Maribyrnong) and Bob Turner (Melton), who have all backed a joint Wyndham council and Western Melbourne Group Holdings bid to base a new club in Tarneit as part of a Football Federation Australia expansion of the A-League. If successful, a multi-million dollar 15,000-seat stadium – dubbed Wyndham Stadium – will be built on a Wyndham-council owned parcel of land at 1160 Sayers Road. According to reports, there are currently 15 bids, including four from Victoria, four from New South Wales, three from Queensland and one each from Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory. The winning bidders are expected to be announced on October 31. Cr Maynard said he was thrilled to have received the support of Wyndham’s neighbouring councils. “Having the support from cities from across the west highlights the importance of a new A-League team for our region and I’m extremely proud to have them on board,” he said. W
e have so many choices in life these days, it would be good to keep something simple. The array of choices is mind blowing, from coffee to bread to petrol. We have gone from white or black, white or brown, super or regular to soy, skinny latte, chai, decaf, multigrain, gluten free, rye and sour dough to V Power unleaded, diesel, 91/95/98. We are now so obsessed with choices that we are looking for ways to complicate even the easiest and most basic elements of our lives – going to the toilet. What was a simple sit-or-stand-wash-hands-on-your-way-out no brainer might now require a tutorial in gender assignment before one even enters the space, if society follows the lead of the St Kilda Football Club from Etihad Stadium last weekend. To embrace the Pride celebration, game toilets were rebadged with signs suggesting you go to the toilet that best suits your gender identity or expression. Also displayed were signs saying ‘Gender diversity is welcome here.’ I already have an aversion to public toilets, but that is based on hygiene and aroma not gender
(though I am sure there is a link) and this won’t help. What is a five year-old to make of this, who really should only be thinking about the immediate bodily function, not the baggage that might be forming around his or her personality years into the future? We are conscripting our kids to confusion and complications and setting an agenda of social behaviour that might make many adults feel good about themselves, but think of others. What about the people who are uncomfortable with this whole genre of thought? Are they being totally forgotten or don’t they matter because of the single mindedness of the people driving this agenda? And when you finish answering those questions, how about this one? Is football the correct vehicle to be driving these social changes? We should all feel safe and comfortable wherever we go. That safety is generated by changing people’s attitudes and behaviours, which is done through education, not confrontation. â–

Sanctuary Lakes suburb bid lost By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council has shot down a push to turn Sanctuary Lakes into a suburb in its own right – despite 84.5 per cent of respondents to a survey voting in favour of the proposal. Following five weeks of community consultation, a council report recommended against councillors supporting the proposal because there was not an obvious preferred boundary option, there was no clear community benefit and because two schools had expressed concerns about federal government funding if they were part of a Sanctuary Lakes catchment.
Cr Tony Hooper said there was no adequate justification for a change, with only 2127 responses being received from 11,000 surveys. He was among a number of councillors to question why, if approved, the suburb would take on the Hobsons Bay postcode of 3028. Councillor Mia Shaw added: “I’m also really concerned about the precedent that we could be setting by effectively ignoring our own policy and having suburbs named after commercial housing estates.” Cr Aaron An said the council should factor in community support for the change. “Given that almost 85 per cent of the people
who voted as part of the consultation supported the proposal, I feel this should be reflected in the council’s decision making,” he said. The vote was divided, with Josh Gilligan, Kim McAliney, Walter Villagonzalo and Aaron An voting in support of Sanctuary Lakes becoming a suburb. Tony Hooper, Heather Marcus, Mia Shaw and Peter Maynard voted against the proposal. As the chair of the meeting, Cr Maynard had the deciding vote. Sanctuary Lakes resident Angela York branded the decision an attack on democracy.
“The council officers and those councillors who voted against our wishes should be ashamed,” she said. Sanctuary Lakes Resort Services chairman Craig Pitts said the council had misrepresented the survey’s findings, adding that there would be no impact on school funding if Sanctuary Lakes became a suburb. He called on the council to make all documentation relating to the survey public – including correspondence between any government agencies, council and councillors – to help residents understand the reasoning behind the council’s decision.
Weaving artistic magic When Vicki Kinai was growing up in Papua New Guinea, it was a rite of passage for girls to learn how to make their own bilum. Making the hand-woven bags, which can hold everything from sleeping babies to food, was considered a vital life skill. “I learnt how to do this before I went to school,” said Kinai, who now lives in Hoppers Crossing. “Today, women make these to sell to make a little bit of money to support the family. “If you didn’t know how to make bilum, then you’re not a woman. Every girl has to learn how to make the bag and carry it every time they go out.” She will display a number of her bilums, among other pieces, in Weave, an exhibition that will open on June 21 at the Wyndham Art Gallery. exhibit an array of intricate items – including cups, saucers and an entire kitchen – created using the ancient art of weaving. Kinai and fellow weavers Lee Darroch, Donna Blackall and Kui Taukilo will invite visitors to join a yarning circle to experience the ancient art form and cultural practice first-hand. “I’m learning a lot from the other people I exhibit with,” Kinai said. “It [also] gives me an opportunity to talk about my country and share my culture.” Weave will run until August 20. Stoush over pine cones By Charlene Macaulay A Werribee resident is having a turf war with Wyndham council over two trees on his nature strip that he says are a hazard. Tibor Kovacs said the trees in front of his Briardale Drive home, which each stand as tall as his double-storey property, regularly make a mess of his front yard because of all the pine cones and needles dropping down. Mr Kovacs is also concerned that he, or a passer-by, will be hit by a falling pine cone. “I’m just waiting for someone to be hit by one of those cones. They’re quite heavy,” he said. Mr Kovacs has called on the council to remove the trees, but to no avail. He said it took four council staff 90 minutes to remove the pine cones from the trees last week, an action he believes is a waste of ratepayers’ money. Under the council’s local laws residents cannot cut down, damage or undertake any major pruning of trees on their nature strips. Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the trees had been pruned by council staff six times over the past five years and were being monitored annually in response to Mr Kovacs’ concerns. “The trees … have been cut back as far away from his fence line as possible without compromising their health and strength,” Mr Thorpe said. “Each year council invests significant time, energy and money into planting more trees throughout Wyndham. “This year we will be planting more than 3500 trees on nature strips in Wyndham and mature trees are highly valued, so we only remove them as a last resort. “Residents can lodge a request with council for a tree to be removed, after which we will inspect the tree and remove it only if we identify a need that matches our criteria.”

Unit approval disappoints A group of Tarneit residents has blasted Wyndham council for ignoring their concerns and giving the green light to 13 double-storey units in their estate. The council last week approved plans for the proposed development at 1 Onyx Way in Ridge estate after the application garnered 113 objections. Cr Josh Gilligan unsuccessfully tried to move an alternative motion refusing the planning application, saying that the proposed development was unlikely to fit in with neighbourhood character and would cause traffic and parking problems. But Cr Mia Shaw and Cr Tony Hooper said they could not support an alternative motion that had been handed to them less than an hour before the council meeting. Ridge estate resident Kylie said she was “extremely disappointed” by the council’s decision. “It was like we didn’t exist and our concerns were not important,” she said. She said the residents would seek legal advice about appealing the decision. Residents are also objecting to an application for 26 units proposed for 3 Onyx Way. A total 64 objections have been lodged against that proposal to date, meaning it will go to a town planning meeting before the matter is decided at a council meeting. But residents fear that the outcome of the application for 3 Onyx Way is a fait accompli, given last week’s decision. Charlene Macaulay

Council ban on gaming venues By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council staff members have been banned from hosting official events and social outings at poker machine venues following a fiery debate at last week’s council meeting. The council last week endorsed its Wyndham Gambling Harm Minimisation Policy and Action Plan, which outlines ways the council will reduce the harm caused by electronic gaming machines (EGMs), online gambling and sports betting until 2022. The new policy means council staff members will be prohibited from holding events, activities, programs and social outings in venues with poker machines. Councillor Kim McAliney pushed unsuccessfully for an alternative motion without this provision, arguing that it could have unintended consequences for the community. “In general, I support the principal of the Wyndham Gambling and Harm Minimisation Policy,” she said. “As the safer communities portfolio holder, I understand what the effects of gambling has on our community. But she expressed concern about the impact the ban could have on senior citizens. “Having worked and volunteered with the elderly over many years, I see for some their only enjoyment is to get on our local community bus and have Lunch with the Bunch once a week. “Enjoy the social interactions with others and having a subsidised meal at a popular venue such as the Werribee RSL and the Italian Social Club.
“Who are we, as elected representatives, to say they can’t do it? “I certainly, if this gets passed, will feel very uncomfortable walking into a [pokies] venue, or if I get invited to an event that’s in a [pokies] venue.” Councillor Josh Gilligan, who chairs the council’s Gambling Reference Advocacy Group, said the alternative motion was full of hypocrises.

“I don’t know a single person in this state or in this country who would say that problem gambling and EGMs are a good thing for creating safer communities,” he said. “I am most certainly not a supporter of ratepayers’ funds being used to prop up gaming venues. This amendment, if endorsed, will send a terrible message.” Fellow councillor Heather Marcus backed up Cr Gilligan, adding: “It would be hypocritical of us to say we don’t want poker machines here or there and then turn around and we hire the poker machine venues”. The policy also bans any gambling activity, promotion or advertising at any council facilities, including websites and social media. The council will also prohibit any funding, grants or sponsorship for any activities that promote gambling.

Park makeover revealed Plans for the final piece of a $7.2 million revamp of Mossfiel Reserve are now public. Three rugby pitches with overlaying cricket ovals, three informal grass volleyball courts, new lighting, a new playground with seating, barbecues and shelters, footpaths, tree planting and landscaping are on the cards for the Hoppers Crossing reserve. The existing cricket nets will be removed and upgraded to a chain mesh-enclosed facility, with three club nets and one public net. Meanwhile, the informal carpark near the skate park will be turned into a 30-space carpark. Once approved, works will begin following
the completion of a state-of-the-art cricket and rugby pavilion, which is under construction as part of the overall redevelopment. Wyndham council also awarded Melbcon the $2.01 million contract to demolish the netball pavilion and build a second pavilion, to be completed in April 2019. The state government has put $1.8 million towards the project as part of its $50 million Growing Suburbs Fund. Wyndham council is footing the rest of the bill. Auction results dip in Wyndham By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham’s auction clearance rates are on the decline as the Melbourne property market begins to plateau. Real Estate Institute of Victoria figures reveal that Werribee properties that go under the hammer have the best chance in Wyndham of selling at auction, with a 73.9 per cent clearance rate in May – higher than the metropolitan clearance average of 65.6 per cent. However, the rest of Wyndham’s suburbs are more in line with the metropolitan average, with Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook each posting a 66.7 per cent clearance rate for the past month, followed by Tarneit (62.5 per cent). In January and October 2017, Wyndham’s clearance rate sat at 81.9 per cent. According to Domain, Melbourne’s auction market has started the year on a far more subdued note than in previous years, following an intense period of properties exceeding asking prices at auction. Samantha McCarthy, from Hockingstuart Werribee, said that while auction clearance rates had reduced slightly, auctions still remained popular with vendors. She said the agency conducted about seven or eight auctions each weekend. “We’re still sitting at around 80 to 82 per cent for our office clearance rates,” she said. “It really comes back to pricing the property correctly in the market, and making sure it’s
really well presented … you follow up with [potential] buyers and ensuring that you’re going to have the best possible outcome for your vendor. “I still believe it’s a great method to sell your home if everything is done correctly.” Ms McCarthy said Werribee and Hoppers Crossing properties remained popular among buyers, but also noted an increased interest in Wyndham Vale.

“It is that next price bracket down,” she said. “Wyndham Vale is definitely one of those areas I’d be watching out for – it’s an easier entry point for property prices, especially for first home buyers.” Ray White Werribee sales consultant Victoria Occhibove said there had been a growing trend of properties selling soon after auction. “We’re finding that, if they don’t sell on auction day, properties sell within 24 to 48 hours after,” she said. “We always say there’s never a wrong time to sell. We’ve already got auctions booked in July, but there’s more competition in spring than there is in winter.”

Magpies in top flight For magpies, familiarity with aircraft, it seems, leads to more laid-back black and white characters. Research conducted around the Point Cook RAAF base has examined how likely magpies are to get their feathers ruffled by aircraft noise. Mike Weston worked with Deakin University colleagues and aviation risk consultancy Avisure on the study, which found that magpies who live at airports are less likely to flee from aircraft noise compared with other magpies. Dr Weston and his fellow researchers recorded how magpies responded to recordings of aircraft take-offs and landings at the base and Point Cook Coastal Park. “I love discovering the way wildlife and humans interact and I am in awe of the
sophisticated and clever ways that animals deal with a human-dominated world,” he said. Dr Weston said that the research found that magpies adjusted their behaviour around aircraft, making them “cooler characters” near planes. “That could help avoid collisions – because of fewer risky last-second escape flights – but they might also get closer to planes, so might increase the risk,” he said. “If they are more relaxed, it might be harder to move them away from aircraft. “Mostly, the research has led to these questions, which we hope to address in future work.” Alesha Capone

Techne managing director Scott Vickers-Willis said the new facility further consolidates the area, which also includes Werribee Mercy Hospital and St Vincent’s Private Hospital, as the leading healthcare
A new $33 million health facility on Hoppers Lane has been unveiled. The 4600-square-metre Wyndham Medical and Services Centre, which was officially opened last week, offers medical and office space under one roof, including Wyndham’s NDIS headquarters, a women’s clinic and a multi-disciplinary centre for family violence and sexual assault victims. Construction of a 150-place childcare centre
precinct in the west. “It is certainly clear to us that this region, with its growing number of young, culturally diverse families, is demanding – and deserving of – the best medical and related facilities that we can bring to the area,” he said. “Wyndham Private Medical Centre has been fantastic and now has 16 GPs, seven days a week, and a big health hub that has over 70 specialists working out of it. “We also developed Wyndham Clinic Private Hospital, which is a mental health hospital and
day surgery that’s also been really popular and going well.” Mr Vicker-Willis said more was on the horizon, with Techne in talks with prospective tenants about more vacant space along Hoppers Lane. Werribee MP Tim Pallas welcomed the new facility. “As we build the infrastructure and services our growing population need, it’s great to have Techne supporting that work and bringing vital assets and jobs to Wyndham,” he said.

Hyperthyroid Disease of Elderly Cats

Hyperthyroidism is a disease of cats, usually ten years of age or older, caused by excessive production of the thyroid hormone. The role of thyroid hormone in the body is to control metabolism and iodine storage. In cats it is typically a benign overactive thyroid gland tumour located in the neck area that leads to hyperthyroidism. After diabetes, hyperthyroidism is the second most common hormonal disease seen in cats. Signs of this condition include hyperactivity, weight loss despite a ravenous appetite and increased thirst and urination. Cats may vocalise, show poor grooming and have a rapid heartbeat. If left untreated cats become emaciated and can develop fatal heart failure. The good news is that diagnosis involves your vet performing a simple blood test and there are good treatment options. The ideal treatment is a single dose of radioactive-iodine administered in an oral capsule. This is given by a veterinary specialist during a stay in hospital but is safe and has excellent permanent results. An alternative treatment is twice daily anti-thyroid tablet or in cats that are difficult to pill, a cream applied to their ears. Regular blood and urine tests are required to monitor this ongoing treatment. Speak to your vet if your older cat shows any of these clinical signs and they will be happy to help.
With the World Cup just days away, Lance Jenkinson talks to a former Socceroo star who is at home in the west. A former Altona Magic youth player, Goran Lozanovski had a glittering career in the old National Soccer League, played as a professional overseas and even featured in the inaugural season of the A-League. Now 44, he is back to where it all started, coaching the Altona Magic. Lozanovski’s proudest memories as a player came after he rose through the Australia youth team ranks and became an Olyroo and Socceroo. He played at the Summer Olympics and featured in national team games, including FIFA World Cup qualifiers. “It was a great experience that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life,� Lozanovski said of his international career. Lozanovski was involved in the Australian national team set-up from 1993 to 1998. An attacking midfielder noted for his dead ball prowess, he was part of the Australian under 20s and graduated to the under 23s before getting his first cap as a Socceroo in 1996. He spent three years as a Socceroo before injuries caught up with him. Lozanovski went on to have a brilliant club career, winning consecutive national league titles with South Melbourne, including winning the Joe Marston Medal for player of the match in the 1998-99 grand final. He had a brief stint with Alemennia Aachen in Germany

backyard and a season with Adelaide United in the A-League. His senior career started at Preston Makedonia in 1991 and he finished back at the same club 17 years later. Lozanovski did it all as a player and has enjoyed the past decade coaching locally. He’s ticked all the boxes - except for playing in a FIFA World Cup. He knows how hard it is for a nation to qualify for soccer’s showpiece event, so is full of admiration for the Socceroos who have made it. This crop of Socceroos has not received the publicity or the adulation of the 2006, 2010 or 2014 teams, probably because of the drawn-out qualifying phase that ended with victory over Honduras in a two-leg qualifier back in November. There is also a sense that the Socceroos are in a transition phase and possibly making up the numbers. That may be proven to be the case, but Lozanovski believes this team should be feted in the same way as the previous Australian teams that made it to the World Cups. “It’s so hard to get there, it’s an achievement to get there,” he said. “We should be proud of that team.” When Lozanovski played for the Socceroos, he did so as an Australian-based player. Qualifying through Oceania was different to the Asian qualifying format today. The Socceroos would generally coast through the bulk of their matches against neighbouring nations and then meet the fifth-ranked South American team for a two-leg play-off to determine which nation goes to the World Cup. The Australian-based players would have to make way for the returning European-based players for the pointy end of the qualifying campaigns, which was not ideal for team cohesion and frustrating for the players

who featured in the lead-up matches, but Lozanovski said he was not complaining as he got the chance to play on the international stage. “It was obviously a great experience to be a part of the Socceroo set-up and to be playing in tournaments and qualifiers,” he said.
Lozanovski reckons the best thing that happened to the Socceroos was joining the Asian Football Confederation, as it took the luck out of qualifying and gave Australia a chance if they were good enough. Lozanovski is eagerly counting down the days until the World Cup kicks off in Russia –
as is everybody in club land. “Everyone at our club is getting excited about the World Cup,” he said. “We’ll have a few World Cup nights and have a few games televised and the food and drinks going. We’re all looking forward to seeing Australia do well.”

MY WYNDHAM Genevieve Mercieca has spent her life opening up her heart and her home to foster children. The Little River resident and her partner John have six children in their care. Genevieve shares her story with Charlene Macaulay. What’s your connection to Wyndham?
What are some of your hobbies?
About seven years ago we moved from Williamstown to Little River, because of space. We had a tiny little cottage in Williamstown … and too many kids, because we foster. We just love it, the community out here is beautiful, they’re so inclusive and wonderful. The four youngest of the six kids are Indigenous, and the community has really embraced them. We haven’t looked back.
I’m on the committee to revive the Little River railway station, which is a beautiful bluestone building. A group of us have got together and are hoping to get VicTrack funding. The train still stops at Little River, but the buildings are never open – it’s just the platforms. We’re hoping to revive that into a bit of a community hub and hopefully incorporate a little coffee shop there. I’m also president of the primary school parents and friends group.

I’ve got three biological kids who are independent, and when they were babies a friend of mine fostered a little baby. I don’t even think I knew of fostering before then, and I thought it was a great thing. That’s what got me started. As John said, he would’ve run a mile if he knew he was going to be the father of six when we first met! But they’re amazing children. I’d like to encourage other people to think about fostering.

Do you have a favourite local haunt? There’s not much around here! We don’t go out that often, but if we do, it would be dinner at the Little River Hotel, which is always good fun.
What was it like being a baton bearer in the Queen’s Baton Relay? I had mixed feelings to begin with, because I’m a republican, but I loved it. I felt really honoured, I thought it was a great thing and it was a great way of promoting the games. If there was something you could change about the area, what would it be? There’s a stretch of road, Rothwell Road, it’s not even a kilometre but it takes a lot of traffic these days. There’s a little bit of bitumen in the middle and all this dirt on the side, and every time you meet [another car], you have to go off the road. Widening the sealed part of the road would be top of my hit list.

Mayoral Column Last week I joined a number of Mayors and senior staff of 10 Interface Councils from Melbourne’s outer suburbs for Interface Week at Parliament. We attended meetings with Ministers and MPs from all parties, pointing out that just 10 Councils have accommodated 49% of Melbourne’s growth over the past four years, generating around 18% of all property taxes that have gone to State coffers. The focus for the week was also on pointing out unrealised economic, social and environmental opportunities present in our communities. I like to think our willingness to suggest solutions kept the week’s focus on how investing in our communities now means future State Governments can avoid much of the estimated $40 billion costs of congestion in our areas. It’s a hard slog asking for more money, so it was also a good opportunity for us to launch a refresh of important evidence in the form our landmark report - One Melbourne or Two? Shire leaders and business men were jubilant last week as the final steel girder of the West Gate Bridge was lifted into place. And they predicted a boom for the area, an increase in population and easier travel to and from the city.
A pedestrian was lucky to be alive after being hit by a car on the Princes Freeway last Thursday night, only three weeks after another pedestrian was killed on the same road. The man, 26, from Sunshine, whose name has not been released, was hit by the car after trying to cross the Princes Freeway, near the Footscray turn-off, about 7.20pm.
The attack on a correction officer at Port Phillip Prison was an “organised, pre-meditated payback” by an inmate stripped of gymnasium privileges, a union official has revealed. A Community and Public Sector Union spokesman Mr Julian Kennelly said the guard was the target of retribution by the prisoner, one of three inmates involved in the assault.
A high-speed ferry service could operate between Werribee South and Docklands or Station Pier within three years in the latest attempt to solve the city’s traffic crisis. The developer of the $440 million Wyndham Harbour marina, Prudentia Investments, is behind the ambitious plan.

Werribee finds its feet in landmark season By Lance Jenkinson With nine games down and nine to go, Werribee has plenty of work ahead if it is to feature in this year’s Victorian Football League finals. Werribee will head into its bye round this weekend with a 2-7 record, which leaves it three games outside the top eight at the mid-point of the season. Following its most significant victory in years away to Box Hill Hawks two weeks ago, Werribee suffered a massive setback on Saturday when it was pummelled by Port Melbourne on home soil by 78 points at Avalon Airport Oval. Irrespective of the outcome in nine games time, it has already been a landmark season for Werribee on and off the field.
Story so far
The theme of the season for Werribee so far has been inconsistency. You don’t know what you are going to get from quarter to quarter, let alone game to game. Should we be surprised? Absolutely not. This is a young team that is taking its first steps as a stand-alone entity without being propped up by AFL players, so it will take time. The best part about Werribee’s inconsistency is the intoxicating highs where they have run-ons and can pile on goals consecutively. If you had a wish for Werribee in the second half of the season, it would be for it to find its middle ground though, as its low periods can be hard to watch at times.
Best win
Not only was Werribee’s seven-point victory over Box Hill Hawks in round nine its best win of the season so far, it was arguably its best win in years. It proved that Werribee belongs as a stand-alone side and no longer has to fear powerhouse opposition. Werribee will gain tremendous confidence out of the win going forward. Michael Sodomaco led Werribee with aplomb, collecting best-afield honours, while Jake Sharp kicked three valuable goals. Werribee’s only other win came against Williamstown by a massive 41 points in round three – its only win so far at a redeveloped Avalon Airport Oval. It was its

The stars
We’ll go with one from each section of the ground. In defence, strong marking Sam Collins has been a steadying influence, assuming leadership responsibilities. If the former Fremantle defender replicates his first half of the season in the run home, he should make a hasty return to the AFL ranks. In the midfield, Tom Gribble has always been a prolific ball winner, but he has taken his game to another level this season, and crucially too with reigning

SPORT Triathlete wins memorial handicap Liam Green is the talk of the Footscray Cycling Club after taking out the coveted Hugh Cram Memorial Handicap. Riders gathered at the Little River Cricket Club to contest race six of the winter road season, but this event had some extra meaning. The race is held to honour Cram, a man who joined the club in 1939 and served it for 50 years, including time as president. Cram was made both a life member and club legend and was also a life member of Cycling Victoria and elevated into its hall of fame posthumously. Five bunches of riders set off to contest 80 kilometres of hard racing on the deceptively difficult Flinders Avenue circuit around the base of the You-Yangs near Little River. The handicap format required each bunch of riders to co-operate and push themselves to the limit to keep the chasing bunches at bay. The gun riders of scratch started out with a 24-minute deficit to make up over limit.

By lap four, after sweeping up 2nd scratch, it was clear that scratch were not going to catch the bunches up the road, likewise the middle-markers rode a lonely race. It was the smooth, experienced, 2nd limit who seized the day, reeling in limit – a few of whom managed to hold on and contest the
sprint, including first female finisher Diane Edwards – and powered along, staying a full five minutes clear of the chasing bunches. It was 27-year-old Melton resident Liam Green who took the sprint for the overall win from Martin Oroszi and Brad Clapham. Club champion Dom Dudkiewicz took out the fastest time five minutes later. Green, who started racing with the club in 2017, made the transition from triathlon to cycling to keep fit in the off season. He was thrilled with his bunch of riders. “My bunch worked really well today,” he said. “We rode a really consistent tempo that we could all cope with, communicated really well, listened to the advice the experienced guys kept delivering and that really helped me big time. “At the end I jumped as late as I could … I left it to the last minute today and it paid off well.” Mark Micallef
IN THE DOGHOUSE While the AFL has its Look of the Game group pounding over ideas and suggestions to make our great game more pleasing to spectators, the world game will take centre stage for the next month with the World Cup in Russia. At its best, soccer is a game of precise skills, beautiful and fluid, with speed, guile and more than enough action. At its worst, like any game, it is stilted, defensive, boring and ugly to endure. While the Socceroos are not expected to go too deep into the competition it does not detract from the World Cup as an event or a spectacle. It is a perfect opportunity for the round ball game to recruit players and spectators and build for the future.

The Look of the Game is a big issue and while it is good not to have it as the elephant in the room, I do have concerns that go straight to grassroots level. The consensus is that the elite level game is not good to watch. Congestion is killing the pace and leading to the game, which was invented for big grounds, being played on a postage stamp. Strangely, we are teaching kids to play the AFL way. Every elite coach builds game plans on defence, yet to get drafted, kids are encouraged to rack up possessions, boost their stats. At AFL level their coach continues his defence mantra and chasing kicks is against team rules. Confused? The AFL is looking at introducing zoning and I am leaning that way too. It will bring positional play back into the game – one on one contests. The alternative is to coach and build game plans for positions, not zones.

The reigning VFL premiership coach spoke pre-game before his Port Melbourne team dismantled Werribee last Saturday at Avalon Airport Oval. His future in football after this season is certainly up in the air given his answer to my question ‘How much longer do you want to continue?” I hope he remains in the game at VFL level because he understands the challenges of competing with no AFL alignment and as such, no AFL money.

Teen takes next step By Lance Jenkinson Half of the battle can be above the shoulders for Werribee Victorian Clay Target Club star Charlie Hudson-Czerniecki. When Hudson-Czerniecki is calm and focused, she can deliver world-class results, as evidenced by her first international event earlier this year, when she reached the final at a Junior World Cup event in Sydney. “It is a tough sport,” she said. “My heart rate goes through the roof in competitions. “I see a sports psychologist and he’s helped me learn to control the mental side of things.” In the days leading up to the Sydney event, Hudson-Czerniecki said she was racked with nerves. It is the same for her at most competitions because the anticipation builds and she wants to shoot well. Once the Sydney competition arrived, Hudson-Czerniecki was amazingly composed. She was the surprise packet on day one of the two-day event, finishing the first day in pole 66 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 13, 2018
position. In the final, she only missed out on a medal by one place, but it was a big thrill for her just to feature in the final. “I had the time of my life, it was such an experience,” Hudson-Czerniecki said. “I was just consistent and ended up being one point ahead by the end of the qualification rounds. “I went in first in the final and that was an experience I’ve never had before. “I was struggling a bit [in the final], but I ended up coming through and finishing fourth, just missing out on a medal, which is upsetting, but I didn’t expect anything more. “It’s my greatest accomplishment yet, I just hope there’s many more to come.” Now Hudson-Czerniecki has shown what she can do in a big-time event against international competition, the bar has been raised. The 19-year-old has been invited to the next Junior World Cup event in Germany later this month. It will be the first time that she has travelled overseas, let alone for a competition. She is comforted by the fact she will be
travelling with an Australian team that gets along well with one another. Her Werribee teammate Alexis Preston will also be in action. “We always train together and travel,” Hudson-Czerniecki said. “I’m glad I’ve got her coming over with me.” Hudson-Czerniecki will fly to Germany with confidence. “There were some great shooters in Sydney, but this is going to be another notch up, so I don’t know how I’ll go,” she said. “I hope everything comes together – the physical and mental side. “I want to compete at my best and be consistent.” Hudson-Czerniecki has been shooting since she was introduced to the sport at the age of 14 by her dad. Her shooting career has kicked on since her arrival at the Werribee Victorian club. “They’re really supportive of me,” she said. “All the committee members are great and … they’re like family to me.”

Winless Hawks look to the future Glen Orden is winless and bottom of the ladder in the Western Region Football League division 3, but is refusing to write off the rest of the season. The Hawks have started 0-7 in their first season back in the competition after a one year hiatus, but coach Phil Crea insists the mission is to not only get the breakthrough win the club desires, but get multiple wins this season. “We’re not far off,” he said. “The players are disappointed they haven’t won a game so far, but I think they understand where we’re at as a club. “We’ll be looking to get a few wins for the club to take a bit of momentum into next year’s pre-season.” It was always going to be a difficult first season back for Glen Orden. The Hawks have been competitive for the most part with a couple of shockers thrown in. The two weeks before the Queen’s Birthday break encapsulated that with a dismal
133-point loss to Tarneit, followed up with an encouraging 20-point loss to ladder leader Wyndham Suns. “That game against Tarneit was out of character for the boys,” Crea said. “We just had a shocker that day. Full credit to the boys, they bounced back against the Suns and were probably a bit unlucky not to win it.” Glen Orden is on the right track. The Hawks are seeing high numbers at training, supporters are back on board and enthusiastic about the direction the club is going and Crea will provide stability after signing a two-year contract extension last week. To steal a catchcry from NBA team Philadelphia 76ers, the Hawks are trusting the process, adamant the rewards of the hard work to get the team back on the field will come. “We’re looking at the bigger picture,” Crea said. “Seeing some of these young players, it’s definitely an exciting time for the club. “Another two years and I’m sure we’ll see a
bit of success down there. “At the moment, the other sides have got a bit more polish and composure, but our boys are sticking to their guns, there’s no doubt about it. “The boys are learning how to play together and want to improve, they’re a good bunch of young kids down there.” Youngsters such as Patrick Hynes, a hard-at-it rover, Kur Kur, an exciting wingman/ midfielder, and Soni Rainbow, a key position player, represent the future of Glen Orden. Ash Burke has impressed with his speed off the half-back line, while the addition of Michael Giles has brought in some experience. Glen Orden will go out in search of its first win of the season against Point Cook Centrals at Featherbrook Reserve on Saturday. Werribee Centrals have savoured that sweet taste of victory in the latest instalment of their growing rivalry with Thomson in the GDFL Netball. The Centrals have moved to the top of the A grade ladder, dislodging Thomson in the process. It took a hard fought 44-36 win for Centrals at Galvin Park on Saturday to make a return to the summit. Amanda O’Malley, Melissa Prismall and Megan Noonan were outstanding for Centrals. Ellie Tubbs led the way in the attacking circle with 25 goals, while Jacinta Savory scored 14 and Ellie Vincent added five. Werribee Centrals will take a six-game winning streak into its clash with second-last side Belmont Lions at Galvin Park on Saturday.

Star fighter flying high By Lance Jenkinson Bailey Lewis is racking up the frequent flyer points in search of the grandest taekwondo mat of all. The target for the City West Taekwondo star is the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, but Lewis does not just want to make the Olympics, he wants to get on the podium. The 20-year-old from Werribee is leaving no stone unturned in his bid to achieve his dream. “Every day it’s two hours of training in the morning, two hours at night,” Lewis said. “That’s Monday to Friday and then two hours on a Saturday. It is a fair bit of training, but when you love the sport, you make it work. “I’m enjoying the journey, but I really want to win a medal at the world championships and the Olympics.” It is only June, but Lewis already has passport stamps in Holland, Bulgaria, United States and Italy this year alone in search of strong competitions. The Dutch Open was the highlight of Lewis’s career to date. He claimed a gold medal in the men’s 54-kilogram event in Eindhoven in March.
“That’s a really hard open competition to win and I came through after a couple of really hard fights,” he said. In Rome, Lewis came close to upsetting the world champion. He lost by just three points in controversial circumstances. “There was a couple of issues with the shield where he was getting points by not even kicking, the points would just come up,” Lewis said. “We had to change the shields and they only took a few of the points off, so it might have been even closer if we hadn’t had any technical difficulties. “It was a good fight, you learn a lot against opponents like that.” In 2017, Lewis travelled to England, Taipei, New Zealand, Belgium and Holland for competitions. The travel is a welcome distraction from his work at Subway and psychology and exercise science studies at Victoria University. “I can’t complain, it’s a good lifestyle,” he said. “I get to travel a lot and I’m getting to do something I love.” Lewis got his start in taekwondo under head instructor Frank De Pasquale at the Hoppers Crossing-based City West. De Pasquale has
been by his side ever since and played an important role mentoring Lewis. “He’s had the biggest impact on me because he’s been my coach from the start,” Lewis said. “He wants the best for me and he’s taught me so much.” Lewis also benefits from having Adrian Abela as one of his training partners at City West. Abela is a world class taekwondo player who also competes at the grand prix and grand slam events with Lewis. Lewis is ranked 26th in the world in an Olympic class division and is hopeful of rising up the rankings in the lead-up to Tokyo. His next trip will be to Taipei next month for a grand prix event, before returning to Australia to compete at the nationals. Lewis is the June nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. Lewis will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to assist him in achieving his sports goals.
Werribee Centrals went down to Thomson by three points in a GDFL football classic at Galvin Park on Saturday. The two sides combined for 31 goals, including 12 in a pulsating last quarter, but it was Thomson who kicked the extra goal to hold on for victory. Trailing by 17 points at three-quarter time, Centrals mounted a late comeback with a seven-goal-to-five last term, but fell agonisingly short. Blake Taylor and Jackson Smith were named best for the Centurions, while Nathan Johnson was dangerous in attack with four goals. Werribee Centrals, seventh with a 4-4 record, will be looking to rebound against bottom four side Belmont Lions at Galvin Park on Saturday.

Werribee City was beaten 2-1 on home soil by top-of-the-ladder Altona Magic in the National Premier League 2 west at Galvin Park on Saturday. The Bees started strongly and took the lead through Jay Kelly in the 29th minute. It was a lead that was short-lived as Robert Stambolziev replied just three minutes later for the Magic. Melvin Becket scored the match-winner for the Magic early in the second half. Werribee City is seventh on the ladder with 19 points – eight points away from second place, but just six points out of the relegation zone. The Bees are back at home on Saturday for a date with east conference side Murray United. Given the surfeit of swoops and angles that seem to be instrumental in the exterior design of SUVs, it is refreshing to come across one that prefers to stick closer to the utility part of the SUV moniker. With its wide stance, hefty wheel arches and squarish shape, the Jeep Compass certainly stands out from the rest of the class. The cabin feels airy and light – something tricky to accomplish in a SUV of this size. There is adequate headroom, even with the optional sunroof, and space in the back to accommodate a couple of taller than average adults.

There are two engines available across the range – a 2.0-litre diesel that offers up 125kW of power and 350Nm of torque, and the 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol (129kW/229Nm) in our test car. While the petrol engine is more than adequate
around town, it needs a fair bit of telegraphing should you want to overtake at highway speeds.
Safety
With seven airbags, including a knee-bag, stability and traction control, front and rear parking sensors, reverse camera and park assist, the Compass Limited has a fair safety package.
If it is true that the Compass has been charged with lifting Jeep’s recent fortunes, then let’s say that its performance both on and off the bitumen has set its mission on course for success. It’s an accomplished drive that takes direction easily, settles quickly over bumps and is highly manoeuvrable despite a wide turning circle. The Compass Limited is thirsty. We found consumption during our week was closer to 11.3 L/100km than the official 9.7 L/100km. Those buyers still wary of Jeep’s recent troubles may find security in a five-year/ 100,000-kilometre warranty, five-year capped-price servicing and lifetime roadside assist.
Summing up
Jeep Compass Limited is a small SUV with big promise. Its all-round performance and much-improved interior makes for a classy act.
