Bid to join A-League By Charlene Macaulay A multi-million dollar 15,000-seat stadium has been earmarked for Tarneit as part of an ambitious bid to base a new A-League football team in Wyndham. Dubbed “Wyndham Stadium”, the privately-funded sporting mecca has been flagged for a Wyndham-council owned parcel of land at 1160 Sayers Road and includes training pitches, sports medicine facilities, a gym, recovery spaces, sporting spaces for the community and residential and commercial development for the surrounding area. The plans include a university, believed to be Deakin University, collaborating as part of the sports science precinct.

The grand plans are the brainchild of Western Melbourne Group Holdings, which is bidding for one of two new team licenses as part of a Football Federation Australia expansion of the A-League. Wyndham council has provided in-principle support to the bid by offering the land for development. Maurice Bisetto from the Western Melbourne Group said the bid has been more than a year in the making. “This is truly a momentous occasion for Australian football,” he said. “Thanks to the support from the council, the dreams and the vision are now real.” According to reports, there are 15 bids for the new teams, including four bids from Victoria, four from New South Wales, three from Queensland and one each from Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory. The winning bidders are expected to be announced on October 31. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said if successful, Wyndham would become a destination for the world game. “It will bring people from across Australia right here to Wyndham to watch on as the nation’s best football players battle it out on the field,” Cr Maynard said. “The value of this landmark deal for our community will be massive, positioning us as a destination of choice, and putting us on the national and international sporting stage.”

Wyndham council’s city economy director Kate Roffey said initiatives such as this were great ways to fund new infrastructure in a booming region. “We don’t have that luxury in the west, we need to make things happen ourselves,” she said.
The Sayers Road site was earmarked for Wyndham’s third aquatics centre. Ms Roffey said the proposed stadium and surrounding precinct “doesn’t actually impact on the area that the aquatic facility has been proposed to be built”, but stopped short of confirming that an aquatics centre would be
built on-site. “The exact location of any future aquatic facility in this area will be determined in time taking into regard the most appropriate location for such a facility,” she said. ■ The

Ambo staff name danger spots By Alesha Capone and Charlene Macaulay More than 40 locations in Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs have been flagged as potentially dangerous for paramedics. Ambulance Victoria last week released a list of more than 230 suburbs and towns across the state which are home to locations where paramedics have encountered patients or individuals who could pose a “threat” to their safety. The list included locations where Ambulance Victoria staff have encountered aggressive
dogs, weapons, “unsafe houses”, verbal threats and assaults, between January 2016 and March 13 this year. Several areas in the north and west featured, including suburbs in the Wyndham, Melton, Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Moonee Valley, Hume and Whittlesea municipalities. Sunbury and Yarraville each had three locations included on the list (Shepparton had the most, with five). Broadmeadows, Keilor Downs, Meadow Heights, Sunshine West, Thomastown and Werribee each had two locations on the list.

Five-month-old spoodle Milo suffered a fractured leg and bite marks all over his body, after he was attacked by three dogs at a Truganina dog park last month. Milo’s owner Sophie is hoping to find the owners of the main dog involved in the attack, in the hope they will help to pay for Milo’s vet bills. Sophie said Milo was attacked when she and her partner took him to the Vibrandia Way dog park on Sunday, May 27, about 1pm. Sophie said soon after they entered the park, a large white dog – similar to a bull mastiff and with a square-shaped patch of fur shaved off its body – started sniffing Milo. Sophie said that suddenly the white dog picked Milo up by his neck and within a few seconds, two other dogs came over. “They all took a piece of him – one had his back and one had his leg,” she said. “I was screaming, they were so vicious, I will never forget it.” Sophie said her partner was eventually able to pick up two of the attacking dogs, getting them away from Milo. “One dog was still on Milo, and I think the owner of the white dog came over and got the other one off,” she said. Sophie said afterwards she and her partner were panicking about getting Milo to a vet so they did not think to ask for the details of the white dog’s owners. She said the owners of the other two dogs did not approach them. Sophie said she reported the attack to Wyndham council. She described the owners of the white dog as a couple, aged in their mid-30s, who appeared to be of Filipino or similar background. She said at the time of the attack, she and her partner noticed about eight “bull” type dogs, which made them think it was a meet-up of owners or a Facebook group. Point Cook has maintained its status as Australia’s most prolific suburb for online shopping, new Australia Post data reveals. Residents used their mobile phones, tablets and desktops in droves for online shopping in 2017, with the suburb recording 22.6 per cent growth from the previous year. Down the road, Hoppers Crossing residents have also embraced shopping online – the suburb was ranked sixth among the country’s top 10 buying locations. Ben Franzi from Australia Post said fashion, health and beauty products were among the most popular online purchases, with end-of-financial year sales and the lead-up to Christmas being the busiest times of year. Mr Franzi said Australians shopped online to access greater value, choice and convenience. The report found that more Australians were shopping online than ever before, with total purchases topping $21 billion in 2017 – up 18.7 per cent from the year before. The new figures came out the same week online retailer Amazon announced Australian customers would only be able to purchase goods from the Amazon Australian website from July 1. Kevin Hillier takes stock of a surprise A-League bid

e all like surprises, whether they be presents, birthday parties, old friends turning up on your front door or plans for a 15,000 seat soccer-specific venue to be built in your backyard. Who doesn’t love that sort of surprise? Late last week it was announced that Wyndham was part of a bid for a new franchise in the A-League. Council has been in talks for more than a year with the West Melbourne Group and the official launch of the bid took place at Tarneit Soccer Club. The land where the world-class stadium is to be built is at 1160 Sayers Road. I have mixed emotions about this news. As a sport and soccer fan, it is very exciting. As a resident/ratepayer, I can see a lot on the plus side, as well. I query the phrase used in a story online: “Wyndham council has provided in-principle support to the bid by offering up the land for development.� What exactly does “offering up the land� mean? Also used were the words “land provided by the Wyndham council�.
Neither indicates the exchange of large wads of money. I am not against these sorts of bold business dealings by council, provided they do not become standard practice. The bidding team wanted the surprise element as competition for expansion A-League licences is intense and any strategic advantage precious. All parties did a good job of not having a leaky boat. Transparency is non-negotiable for local government, but that does not mean deals can’t be done, with information becoming available to the public when the time is right – as seems to be the case here. Bid consortiums over the years in various sports have been less than forthcoming with real facts and figures. I trust that council has been diligent, methodical and pragmatic. History shows many organisations have been mesmerised and captivated by the smoke and mirrors of a presentation and have come down with a thud when reality steps in. I hope the surprise of the bid announcement last Friday is the only one we get in this process. â–

Police arrested a driver after a pursuit, after attempting to intercept his vehicle on the Western Ring Road in Laverton about 12.10am on May 31. The car, which was allegedly stolen during an aggravated burglary in Werribee on May 29, stopped on Heaths Road, Werribee at 1.45am. Police said they anticipated that the driver, a 26-year-old man, would be interviewed for offences including aggravated burglary, reckless conduct endangering life, theft, assaulting police and numerous traffic-related offences.

Police allegedly caught a 39-year-old drink-driver last Wednesday, after he was seen driving erratically on K Road in Werribee South. The driver returned a positive preliminary breath test and later recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.343. The Werribee man had his licence suspended for 12 months, surrendered his vehicle and is expected to be charged on summons. Bus service takes flight By Alesha Capone SkyBus will run a direct bus service between Werribee and the Melbourne Airport from next month. The new Western Express service, which is scheduled to start on July 1, will run for 10 years if the operator meets performance targets. The service will pick up passengers outside the Werribee RSL before stopping at the Tarneit train station and continuing to Melbourne Airport. The service will operate seven days a week between 7am and 7pm. From next year, the buses will run every half hour.

The state government announced on Monday it had signed a contract with SkyBus that boosts services to outer suburbs. SkyBus co-chief executive and director, Michael Sewards, said that the introduction of the Werribee-to-airport service was an exciting venture. “The Western Express service, with a Werribee and Tarneit connection, will give local residents a reliable, convenient and affordable ride to and from Melbourne Tullamarine Airport,” he said. “We have ordered purpose-built, Victorian-made buses to cater for this service, so the residents can rely on SkyBus as a comfortable airport transport service when travelling.” Werribee MP Tim Pallas welcomed the announcement.

“This is great news for people out west, with the new service between Melbourne Airport and Werribee directly connecting passengers between Tullamarine and Melbourne’s growing western suburbs for the first time,” he said. Last year, SkyBus began running services between Werribee and Avalon airport as part
of its express Melbourne-to-Avalon shuttle service. The Avalon-Melbourne buses stop at the Werribee RSL on Synnot Street. Centre closed for upgrade Part of the Point Cook Community Learning Centre will be shut down for about two months for upgrade works. Wyndham learning city portfolio holder Josh Gilligan, said a section of the centre would be closed between June 18 to mid-August in order to complete works in the library and foyer. However, Cr Gilligan said the centre’s kindergarten would operate as normal during the work. “We will be working to re-open the library and customer service area as quickly as we can and then we’ll be completing those final finishing touches to the rest of the building,” he said. Cr Gilligan said regular Point Cook library programs would take a break during the closure, but the council would still run school holiday programs at the Featherbrook Community Centre. He said the Rhyme Time program would be held at other venues. “Due dates for items borrowed from the Point Cook library will be extended during the closure so that you can bring them back once the library re-opens,” he said. “Items can also be returned to any of our four other branches.” Maternal and child health appointments will be held in other centres, including Featherbrook, Jamieson Way and Saltwater community centres until September 24. Tree to make way for Riverwalk By Charlene Macaulay
Winter party heating up The streets of Werribee’s CBD will come alive with art and colour during the Winter Street Party. The annual event will be held between 4-9pm on Friday, June 29. Wyndham’s tourism and major event portfolio holder Cr John Gibbons said the Winter Street Party attracted more than 5000 people last year. “This year we are thrilled to be bringing a number of high calibre works to the city, including What’s That by Amanda Parer – a glowing, inflatable giant that has toured the world including Prague, Amsterdam and Montreal,” Cr Gibbons said. “Carla O’Brien, who has previously been a highlight of the White Night Melbourne event, will also be bringing a range of colourful, interactive neon artworks.” Cr Gibbons said the street party would also include fire performances, ice sculpting, live music, snow dome workshops and glow-in-the-dark face-painting. A pop-up video lounge will showcase the work of local artists Hengameh Ghaderi and Imran Abul Kashem. One more tree from Werribee’s Riverwalk estate is facing the chopping block to make way for service and access roads. Wyndham council is assessing an application from Development Victoria – which is developing Riverwalk estate in a joint venture with Melbourne Water – to remove a native tree along Geelong Road, adjacent to 2 Farm Road. It is unknown when a decision will be made. Development Victoria already has a permit to remove four Victorian native trees along Geelong Road so they can build service and access roads. The state government body is proposing to realign the roads so only one tree needs to be removed. Peter Hood from Development Victoria said the tree in question had been assessed by an arborist as being in poor condition. “Overall, Development Victoria intends to plant around 5000 trees within the Riverwalk estate and along Geelong Road as part of the development,” Mr Hood said. The proposal is the latest in a series of tree removals at Riverwalk estate. In August last year, the state government body cut down a number of sugar gum and eucalyptus trees to make way for a display village on Geelong Road. In March, another 200 trees were cut down along Farm Road to make way for stages 20-22 of the development. Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said discussions with Development Victoria about replanting tall canopy trees along Geelong Road were ongoing. Writing on Star Weekly’s Facebook page, Lisa questioned why any trees had been removed. “Senseless destruction of our flora and fauna. Those trees could have been protected by council years ago but they failed to do so.”

Munitions site in a sorry state By Alesha Capone Historic Truganina Munitions Reserve has become a target for graffitists, vandals and rubbish dumpers, spurring calls for the site to be restored or demolished. Star Weekly visited the abandoned reserve, which is bounded by Palmers, Boundary and Dohertys roads, last week. The site’s buildings are covered in graffiti and their windows smashed. Discarded spray cans and old tyres litter the landscape. According to the Wyndham – Our story website, part of the disused industrial complex was used as a munitions depot and army stables during the Second World War. It is also home to a ruin known as “Henry Robinson’s house”, which was part of a farm in the 1880s. Wyndham city operations director Stephen Thorpe said the Truganina Munitions Reserve was privately owned. “Council has investigated several incidents of illegal rubbish being dumped on the site without the permission of the owner,” he said. Mr Thorpe said that since 2009, the council had also issued four infringements and one intervention notice for long grass at the site. “The state of the buildings, however, is not an issue that council can enforce as we do not inspect rural or industrial properties for unsightliness,” he said. “There are currently no heritage overlays affecting this property. However it is listed on the Victorian Heritage Inventory, meaning any potential developer would need to go through Heritage Victoria before carrying out any work on the site.” Mr Thorpe said no recent planning applications had been lodged to develop the site.

After Star Weekly posted photos showing the state of the reserve on social media last week, several people labelled it an “eyesore”. Joan Ann said: “It is just awful, there is just no respect for our history.”
Mike said: “I used to go past this every day going to work, about 18 years ago, can’t believe it’s been let go this badly.” Some people argued the site should be demolished, while others said it should
be restored to preserve its history for the community. “Council should purchase, restore and turn it into a community centre or something for the local area,” Craig said.

Funding boost to fight violence By Benjamin Millar Eradicating the attitudes and behaviours that underpin violence against women in the western suburbs is the focus of a new $400,000 funding package. Prevention of Family Violence Minister Natalie Hutchins visited Victoria University’s Footscray campus last Wednesday to announce a range of grants, including $110,000 to help VU support women living on university campuses speak out against violence. The project will be led by VU academic Tim Corney, working with students, student organisations and college administrators. VU vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins said all forms of violence against women are preventable, but not without confronting the attitudes, behaviours, structures and systems that drive it. A further $140,000 has gone to HealthWest Partnerships to work with male VU students on tackling the drivers of family violence. The project will help young men from diverse backgrounds develop prevention strategies in their communities. Women’s Information and Referral Exchange received $100,000 to train volunteers to carry out conversations in the community on gender equality issues. Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-Operative and IPC Health will receive $50,000 to engage Elders and ‘Elders in training’ to address the drivers of family violence in the community. Ms Hutchins said ending family violence means addressing gender inequality. “We’re using every means necessary to stop violence before it starts,” she said. “To end family violence for good we need to not only invest in ideas that are proven to work – but invest in new, evidence-informed approaches to prevention.”
United effort to help victims A new multi-disciplinary centre that gathers together under one roof police and support workers for family violence and sexual assault victims has opened its doors in Werribee. About 45 police from the Westgate Family Violence Unit and Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation teams have joined child protection staff from the Department of Health and Human Services, community health nurses and counsellors from the Western Region Centre Against Sexual Assault, Women’s Health West, Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency, and Gatehouse. The multi-disciplinary centre, which is located within the Wyndham Medical and Services Centre on Hoppers Lane, is the seventh to be opened in Victoria. Family Violence Assistant Commissioner Dean McWhirter said the different agencies would work together to ensure victims do not have to deal with multiple agencies in different locations. He said Wyndham police were attending, on average, 2700 family violence related incidents each year. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the centre would provide better treatment options for family violence, sexual assault and child abuse victims across the west. A lifetime of service By Charlene Macaulay
The State Government has allocated $30 million in their recent Budget for a ‘Pick My Project’ - a Victorian first community grants initiative where you can come up with a local project idea, vote for your favourites, and make Wyndham an even better place to live. I welcome communities having more say in State Government projects and I’d love to see any future funding rounds focus on collaborations between them, Council and local residents. Projects that are included in Council’s 2018/19 Budget are not eligible. Collaboration with community groups, schools and other partners is strongly encouraged, and applicants can be any resident in Victoria. Projects must be not-forprofit and cost between $20-$200,000 (including GST). They must be open or available to the wider community so if they’re behind locked gates they’re not eligible. Projects must be completed within 12 months from signing a funding agreement and receiving any necessary approvals and permissions. Examples of eligible projects include cultural events and festivals; playground upgrades; skillshare programs; walking and cycling trails; neighbourhood and community markets and gardens, as well as public art. These two local legends have notched up a collective century with Werribee Fire Brigade. Volunteer firefighter John Ryan and auxiliary volunteer Barbara Wells were honoured for 50 and 51 respective years of service recently. Mr Ryan joined the CFA in March 1968 as a 16-year-old and shortly after fought the 1969 grassfires, which burned down 40 homes. “That was a pretty horrific day. People were burnt … that was horror, sheer horror,” he said. Mrs Wells signed on as a support member in February 1967 when she was dating her then-boyfriend (now husband) Darryl, who has been with Werribee CFA for more than 55 years and is a former captain. Over that time, she’s catered for functions, made thousands of sandwiches, and offered practical and emotional support. She said being the wife of a firefighter could be tough, and remembers one time, pre-mobile phones, when she had no contact with Darryl for four days when he was out battling a fire. She’s also used to having a husband that drops everything at a moment’s notice. “You make a meal and you sit down and the siren goes off and the phones would go off and away Darryl would go.” Mr Ryan added: “It always went off on Christmas Day, at Christmas dinner.” But, Mrs Wells wouldn’t have it any other way, describing the brigade as an extended family. The pair were among nine members to receive long service awards at a recent Werribee Fire Brigade ceremony. Other recipients included Mel Mathias (45 years), Noel Squires (35 years), Alan Ryan (35 years), Sharlene May (35 years), Elizabeth Mathias (35 years), Ian Kumpis (35 years) and Lino Zulian (30 years).

Affordable housing supply slump By Charlene Macaulay Outer suburban areas such as Wyndham are no longer a haven for low income earners and struggling families seeking somewhere affordable to live. A Council to Homeless Persons analysis of the latest department of health and human services rent data shows there were only 11 two-bedroom rentals affordable to a Newstart recipient in Wyndham during the December 2017 quarter – and no one-bedroom offerings.
This is compared to 55 two-bedroom and no single-bedroom properties in 2007. Council to Homeless Persons chief executive Jenny Smith said Wyndham was among a number of outer suburban areas – including Geelong, Frankston, and Brimbank – that experienced the greatest decline in the number of affordable two-bedroom rentals. “People move further out to chase cheaper rent, but just face fiercer competition from low income earners and young people saving for deposits to buy, from a shrinking pool
of low-cost rentals,” she said. “It is a perfect storm culminating in increased homelessness, and the only solution is to build more social housing.” In December 2016, the state government allocated $15 million to the H3 Wyndham Alliance – made up of nine support agencies and Wyndham council – to address homelessness and rough sleeping in the Wyndham area. Not-for-profit agency Unison, which is part of the alliance, used some of the funding to buy 12 one and two-bedroom properties to be used
by those sleeping rough in Wyndham. All 12 properties are already occupied. Unison chief executive Jack Panton said demand for affordable one or two-bedroom properties in Wyndham was increasing. “In 2017 we saw on average about 400 new and returning clients a month in our Werribee office. For the month of May, we’re going to reach almost 570 clients,” Mr Panton said. “We see a lot of families in housing crisis and our private rental assistance program currently has over 30 households on a waiting list.”
Cuppa for a good cause The Italian Sports Club of Werribee ladies committee has done itself proud. The committee hosted an event for the Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea campaign last month, raising $13,000 for the Cancer Council. Money raised during the annual campaign goes toward supporting cancer patients and research. Ladies committee chairperson Connie Fugazzotto said she and her fellow committee members had organised a Biggest Morning Tea every year, for the past 12 years. “We’ve been doing this for years, and each year we want to just beat last year’s total,” she said. “Last year we raised $12,500.” Ms Fugazzotto said that across the past 12 years, the committee had raised “well over $100,000” for the Cancer Council. She said 276 people attended this year’s morning tea, which was held on May 31. Ms Fugazzotto said she would like to thank the attendees and event’s sponsors.
“We rely on the generosity of lots of businesses in Werribee and Hoppers Crossing, they donate vouchers and prizes for the silent auction, we’d really like to thank them and we couldn’t do it without them,” she said. Ms Fugazzotto said the committee enjoyed holding the Biggest Morning Tea each year. “We know it’s a good cause, I don’t think there’s been many families who haven’t been touched by cancer,” she said. Residents bid for budget funds By Charlene Macaulay A new pool for Point Cook, signage for historical sites along the Werribee River and road upgrades are on the wish lists of Wyndham residents keen to see their ideas funded in the upcoming council budget. Wyndham council received nine submissions from residents and community groups regarding its draft 2018-19 budget, with eight people and groups fronting the council on Monday night to put forward projects for budget consideration. Point Cook Action Group (PCAG) – dominated the submissions process, accounting for four of the presentations made. Susan McIntyre and Sara Mitchell, from PCAG, called on the council to finance a permanent pop-up park at Point Cook Town Centre. The Point Cook park ran for two months earlier this year, embraced by locals
and traders. Both the council and Point Cook Town Centre owner Stockland emerged as open to the idea of setting up a permanent pop-up park. “We’re proposing a space for all seasons,” Ms Mitchell said. Nandakumar Alavander, who has represented Australia in table tennis, said he was keen to see the council support a table tennis club and facilities. Other suggestions included: • Signage for 12 historical sites along the Werribee River and a corresponding Werribee River Heritage Trail brochure. • Funding for a sports oval and pavilion at
Werribee’s Riverwalk estate. • A swimming pool and indoor recreation centre in Point Cook. • The installation of traffic lights at the Sneydes and Point Cook roads intersection. • Funding to support the Western Emergency Relief Network which supplies goods to people in need. • On-demand public transport in and around Point Cook. The council’s 2017-18 budget and resident submissions will be considered, and voted on, at a special council meeting on Tuesday, June 26.
Warm tidings for U-Vet Injured and unwell patients at the U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital are feeling much cosier, thanks to a generous donation from a local school. Pupils from Thomas Chirnside Primary School in Werribee presented a collection of donated blankets and towels to the clinic’s staff last Thursday. The president of the school’s parent’s club, Amy Cameron, said the blankets were collected at a fundraising movie night at which families were also asked to help warm the animals’ winters. “It was a good way to do something for the school and something for the community,” Ms Cameron said. She said that the school donated about 30 blankets to U-Vet. “When we contacted them, they were rapt to get a mass donation,” Ms Cameron said.
Last week, Thomas Chirnside grade 5 and 6 pupil leaders were given a tour of the U-vet facility. “They were really excited – they saw the horse facility, which you don’t usually get to see if you bring your pet dog or cat in,” Ms Cameron said. Alesha Capone

Station parking needs work: Pallas By Alesha Capone Werribee MP and treasurer Tim Pallas says he would be keen to encourage more privately-owned operators to set up carparks near Tarneit station. Speaking at the Committee for Wyndham annual Victorian Government Budget Breakfast on Friday, Mr Pallas said any private services would not replace government efforts to improve parking. He said the government needed to take action on the lack of parking at some
Wyndham stations, including Tarneit station. “I think that as a government we have to acknowledge we’re going to have to put more effort into parking and also better aligning bus services with train stations,” he said. Mr Pallas said Wyndham council had made him aware that many commuters were resorting to illegally parking in and around the station. While making a presentation on the state government’s 2018-19 budget during the breakfast, Mr Pallas outlined some of the investments it contained for Wyndham,
including additional V/Line services for Wyndham Vale; land acquisition for the Werribee Justice Precinct; the Greening the Pipeline project; and $1 million to develop a business case for the planned expansion of Werribee Open Range Zoo. Also on the issue of transport, Mr Pallas answered a question from one of the breakfast’s attendees. Dr Joe Garra from the Werribee South Ratepayers Association, asked about the need to remove the Hoppers Crossing level crossing.
Mr Pallas said that although he could not say if the crossing would be earmarked for removal after the state government finished its current program, he considered the Hoppers Crossing site a “very worthy” candidate for consideration. In response to a question about the progress of the East Werribee Employment Precinct plans, Mr Pallas said the government was keen to see residential housing included in the development, or else it would be at risk of becoming “a ghost town” after business hours.

Westgate Highway Patrol is calling on drivers to be on their royal best behaviour this long weekend as police flood the state’s freeways and major arterials. Westgate Highway Patrol unit commander Keith Kissack said police would increase their presence on Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong roads during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend for the statewide Operation Regal, which will run from June 8-11. The operation will target speeding, driver distraction, seatbelts, fatigue and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs – the top five contributing factors to road trauma. “Motorists are requested to stay within the speed limit, don’t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, leave your mobile phone out of reach, wear your seatbelt and make sure you are well rested,” Senior Sergeant Kissack said. “Road trauma isn’t just about the people

Line dancing has come a long way from boot-scooting, country music and cowboy hats. That’s the word from Werribee’s Cynthia Rennolds, who has spent the past 20 years at the helm of the Cactus Moon line dancing group. The instructor said line dancers now dance to anything from One Direction to Pink and even Michael Jackson. “It’s certainly not the real old boot-scooting that most people would be aware of, it’s more like modern freestyle dancing, almost,” she said. “As long as it’s got a nice beat, we’ll dance to it.” Ms Rennolds had been teaching line dancing for a couple of years before branching out and founding Cactus Moon in 1998. She has a dedicated following that takes part in classes and social events. Three of her members have been with her since day one, and about 70 per cent have been attending her classes for at least 10 years. “We’re a family. Line dancing is a real family, and it’s not only a family here, it’s a family with all the groups around Victoria and in some cases, Australia. We all bond. “If you play basketball or football or tennis, you’ve got to be good at it. You can come to line dancing and you don’t have to be good at it … they’ll try to help you.” More than 130 people travelled from all over the state to celebrate Cactus Moon’s 20th birthday. Bridge fixed to the Max in Little River
Captain takes step back By Charlene Macaulay For Truganina CFA, it will be the end of an era when its first female captain relinquishes her mantle at the end of this month. Colleen Goodfellow, who has served three terms at the helm since first being appointed to the top job in 2012, will remain a volunteer firefighter when she hands the reins over to current first lieutenant Mark Hatton on July 1. Mrs Goodfellow joined Truganina’s junior brigade when she was 11 years old in 1987, following in the footsteps of her family,
including father and CFA captain Colin Squires. She took part in running competitions and learned the ropes before going into active duty when she was 16. Mrs Goodfellow said incidents such as a grass fire in Gisborne when she was younger and major disasters remained prominent in her memory. During the Black Saturday bushfires, Mrs Goodfellow stayed on base managing crews while tending to her three-month daughter Charlotte. She said she’d been proud to be appointed captain, having worked towards the role for
most of her adult life. Her CFA career has always run in tandem with helping run the family business, Squires Coaches. “Female representation in general is pretty low in CFA,” she said. “In our brigade we have about eight females that are operational … you’re looking at about 30 operational males. “My father was the captain that I took over from, so I guess that in itself was special, too. I’d been on the brigade management team for 12 years at that point, in various roles from communications officer through to operational lieutenant.”
A Little River bridge that featured in the 1979 film Mad Max is receiving a $500,000 upgrade. Kirk’s Bridge, which appeared in a scene in which Mel Gibson’s character wiped out four bikers in a fatal pursuit, will receive a safety boost thanks to the work. Every year, more than 120,000 vehicles use the bridge, which runs between the Wyndham and Little River areas. Wyndham mayor and growth and transport portfolio holder Peter Maynard said Wyndham council and Greater Geelong council had teamed up to fund the works at the “iconic” bridge. “The bridge will be repaired, stabilised and painted,” Cr Mayhard said. “These works will improve the safety of the bridge, allow for future upgrades to the road surface and prevent further corrosion and damage.” Cr Maynard said the works were scheduled to finish by the end of this month. “While Mel Gibson may have wreaked havoc on Kirk’s Bridge as Mad Max Rockatansky, these upgrades will help make hundreds of people’s daily trips safer and smoother,” he said. The industrial officer of the Federated Engine Drivers and Firemen’s Association, Mr. Mick Clarke, has accused the Board of Works of having something to hide. Mr. Clarke told the Banner that the week-old strike at the Metropolitan Board of Works Farm at Werribee would not be resolved until the men involved had assurances that their health would not be adversely affected by their work.
Shoppers might be faced with severely reduced public transport to the Werribee Plaza Shopping Centre if a dispute between Plaza management and a local bus company is not resolved in the next fortnight. The management and drivers at Werribee’s Blue Riband Bus Lines will refuse to drive buses to certain parts of the shopping centre unless Plaza management agrees to provide safety roadworks by Tuesday 14 June.
Wyndham council was last night expected to reject a planning amendment which would allow the CSR prescribed waste facility to go ahead. The anticipated refusal of the dump follows exhaustive consideration by the council which, with the Environment Protect Authority (EPA), is the planning authority for the proposal.
A small rate rise and one of the state’s largest capital works programs are highlights of the Wyndham Council’s 2008-09 draft budget, presented on Monday night. The council plans to bill ratepayers an extra 4 per cent on average, and to spend $59.4 million on capital works.

MY WYNDHAM Suji Sanjeevan grew up in the UK before falling in love and moving to Australia. Despite graduating with a medical degree, being a doctor was never her passion, instead she held roles in clinical research and policy, started her own boutique candle business, and is completing a law degree. She talks with Charlene Macaulay.
Growing up, my parents were very focused on us having a career that involved going to university. I was the first person [in my family] to enter medical school and I think that was my mother’s childhood dream. I took two years off [my degree] and did an honours degree in oncology. But in the back of my mind, I felt unresolved about med school. I felt like I’d started something and hadn’t finished it, and I hate that. So I went back, finished medicine … but I drew the line there. I never really refer to myself as a doctor. I’ve always seen myself as a policy officer, or researcher … that’s where my passion was. How did you meet your husband Jeeva? I met Jeeva out in London. I knew instantly this was the guy for me. This was the guy that’s going to support me because, unlike other guys, he listened to what I wanted. He was already settled in Sydney, but he was out there training. We met, we clicked, and within six months we were engaged, and within a year we were married and I was travelling here. That was 10 years ago. We’ve got three children – a six-year-old, a two-year-old and an eight-month-old. How did you come to live in Wyndham? We actually lived in Notting Hill when we first moved here because that’s where Jeeva
was based [for work]. It was random – our neighbours said they were going to Point Cook to look at some land, and we came out and I loved it. I loved the open space, the ability to build on, and it was close enough to the city at that time that it was driveable. We’ve moved houses, but we’ve always stayed within Point Cook and when we moved to Saltwater Coast, it was the community there that was incredible. Everyone knows everyone. Tell me the Light and Glo story. Just as I was about to go on maternity leave with my second son, I made some candles for my baby shower … and got a good response from everyone and encouragement from friends. It’s been a huge personal growth for me. It’s allowed me to express things that I wasn’t able to express before, and one of the things I’ve been really passionate about is mental health. We’re in the process of setting up a not-for-profit out of the business called The Ambience Foundation and it’s going to be solely focused on mental health. If there was one thing you could change about Wyndham, what would it be? It would have to be public transport. The infrastructure’s not growing as fast as the area is growing.

Have it as a lunchtime treat instead. That provides enough time for melatonin to best do its tricks later.
Chocolate fondant, chocolate mousse, brownies – a roll call of indulgent desserts we all love as finishers to a good meal. But did you know that chocolate not only has caffeine but is also rich in an amino acid called tyramine, which our bodies convert to noradrenaline, another stimulant? Yep, chocolate, one of the wonders of the food world, can rev us up to the point that it interferes with our ability to fall asleep. So while tucking into a lovely, oozy fondant may deeply satisfy a need for rich and sweet, it can also keep us awake later. Who hasn’t occasionally felt, after a great meal, that weird “wired� feeling for a couple of hours? How sad that divine chocolate could be the culprit! But there are other foods that appear on many menus that are just as yummy and have beneficial effects in regulating sleep cycles. They contain either magnesium and/or potassium, to help with body relaxation, or melatonin, which is used as a treatment for insomnia. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the brain’s pineal gland and is known to help regulate cycles of sleep and wakefulness. Levels start to rise in the evening to help establish sleep conditions, so ordering certain dishes when eating out can actually influence that night’s sleep.

CHOCAHOLICS What is your all-time favourite chocolate bar? What is your least favourite chocolate bar? Until I posted these two questions on the Food Bytes Facebook page, I hadn’t realised it was such a polarising topic. When I was a child, my dad used to buy me a White Knight bar every Sunday when he popped into the local milk bar to grab his copy of the Sunday Observer Observer. When I opened up the kids’ section in the middle of the paper, there was the chocolate bar staring back at me. The joy of working my little jaw around that chewy slab of peppermint coated in milk chocolate, while poring over the kiddie crosswords, is one of my favourite childhood memories.

FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? AP: I think my cooking skills are fair, however my boys, Andrew and Woody, would say my skills were poor! Haha … so I would rate myself as a four out of 10, they wouldn’t give me a score. FB: What is your signature dish? AP: Eskimo pies, Golden Gaytimes and Bubble-O Bill ice creams – a fantastic and quite individual dessert. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? AP: If I could have one last meal it would be roast lamb, roast potato, pumpkin, parsnip, fresh peas, broccoli and beans … and lots of very, very thick Gravox to complete and washed down with a glass or two or three of pinot noir. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? AP: I don’t watch food TV shows therefore I don’t have a favourite food person. FB: What is your favourite food? AP: My favourite food is roast lamb or roast beef with thick Gravox. I also like the supermarket brand of spaghetti bolognese. I have a Cup of Soup every morning. I am allergic to shellfish but the baked crab shell at Silks restaurant at Crown is brilliant and I could have a couple of them (though I haven’t). I also love a really hot Thai red or green vegetable curry (though no tofu). I don’t have this often as I hate the after effects of garlic – yuk! FB: What is your favourite drink? AP: My favourite drink is Diet Coke and Rose – not mixed together! I did once try Diet Coke and red wine. It happened by accident. I was drinking Diet Coke from a red wine glass and the waiter filled it up with red wine, my mistake. So I took the challenge and tasted the new drink and it wasn’t that bad actually! FB: Which five people would most like to invite to dinner? AP: I would love to invite Princess Grace or Diana, Benazir Bhutto, Kate Langbroek, Jane Kennedy and my sister, Jane. However, the White Knight does not seem to attract the controversy its much-maligned cousin, the Turkish Delight, does. While many people share my dislike for this kind of chocolate, dozens more will jump to its defence, telling me I don’t know what I’m missing out on. Cherry Ripes, Violet Crumbles, Bounty, Boost, Kit Kats, Flakes, Aeros and the old Scorched Peanut Bar all rated a mention among people’s favourites in my little straw poll. But what was most interesting to me was seeing how many still miss and yearn for the old Pollywaffle. No wonder Cadbury came up with the Favourites box. There’s no pleasing everyone!

Werribee breaks through with a grand victory By Lance Jenkinson It was the major scalp that Werribee had threatened to take all Victorian Football League season. A breakthrough victory over a fully aligned AFL opponent for the first time since returning to stand-alone status. The memorable seven-point win over Box Hill Hawks at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday will go down as an upset, but it should not come as a surprise. Werribee midfielder Kurt Aylett said the result meant more to his young side than merely four premiership points. “It was a great scalp for us,” he said. “The boys are rapt and it’s one of the best wins we’ve played in. “Being a full stand-alone team and winning against an AFL affiliated team and one that we hold high respect to and the whole competition does too, we can take some confidence into the rest of the year now, knowing we can match it with anyone.” Werribee had gone close three times this season against fully aligned sides without tasting success. In the season opener, it went down to Geelong in a thriller by four points, it came close on the road at Casey before losing by 16 and ran out of time in an eight point loss to Footscray. Werribee was not going to let this one slip, not after the amount of hard work it put into the contest. The John Lamont-coached team led by 16 at half-time, but was out-scored five goals to one in the third quarter and some at the ground felt like Box Hill would hold on. But Werribee produced a remarkable last quarter, keeping Box Hill goalless and scoring late goals through Jake Sharp and Kye Declase to claim a famous win. Unlike previous games when Werribee had flat patches, this time it produced a near four quarter performance. Werribee also cleaned up its use of the

ball and rebounded well off half-back. There were no passengers for Werribee as they out-worked the hosts and relished the freedom of the wide expanses of the ground. “It was just a fantastic effort from across the board,” Aylett said.
“We went in with a clear focus on some of the defensive aspects in our game and just really brought the pressure and a relentless attack on the ball. “Box Hill is a big ground and with the work we’ve done in the pre-season, we had
the confidence in our ability to run and carry and use the ball. “We’ve got such great intercept markers in our team to drive us off the half-back flank and some great runners to get it forward. “We had a real simple and clear focus going into this week’s game to attack between the arc and really drive the ball forward.” All the leaders stood up for Werribee. None more so than captain Michael Sodomaco, who was outstanding in defence. Aylett had more of a defensive midfield role to perform and did so admirably, Tom Gribble racked up 31 possessions and Ben Moloney was hard at it with 13 tackles to go with two goals. Sharp relished the chance to play forward, kicking three crucial goals. “It was an even contribution across the board, but to have the leaders stand up and lead the way was really promising,” Aylett said. “We have to, we have no choice, it’s the pressure we put on ourselves week in week out. “Hopefully the young guys are learning a lot from us and we continue to drive and build what is hopefully a powerhouse team in the near future.” Werribee will host a stand-alone side in Port Melbourne at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday at 3pm. The Borough is not just any stand-alone side, they are the premiers of last season. “Everyone knows they’re the premiers of last year and they’re the benchmark,” Aylett said. “We had a great win against them last year, but that was last year. “I know the guys are keen to get into this week’s preparation and really have a good hit-out against them. “We want to build that fortress at home and make Werribee a tough place to play at. “We’re working towards that and looking forward to the challenge.”

The Devils took to the road for a third straight win, beating Warrnambool Mermaids 75-63 at the Arc Sports Stadium on Saturday night. It took a while for Werribee to shake off its stubborn hosts. The Devils edged ahead bit by bit the longer the game wore on before pulling away in the fourth. Sam Moodie had a double double 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Devils. Jessica Slade produced 16 points and nine rebounds, while Georgia Tauschke and Jessy Price scored 13 apiece. weekend for the Werribee Devils, but it was oh-so-close to being a great weekend. The Devils kick-started the weekend with an 86-73 win over Blackburn Vikings at the Knox Basketball Stadium.
Import Konor Kulas left his stamp all over the win with 27 points and 17 rebounds. Devils captain Paul Elderkin came up big with 19 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, while Bryan Nagy had a double double, 13 points and 12 rebounds. With the game they expected to win in the bank, the weary Devils came out on Sunday in search of an upset win over ladder leader Ringwood Hawks, but they fell agonisingly short in a 116-112 loss at Eagle Stadium. It was another Kulas’ special for Werribee, with the American scoring 40 points to go with 11 rebounds. Kulas shot 71 per cent from the field and went to the free throw line 19 times for an impressive 89 per cent success rate. The costly loss leaves the Devils in ninth place with a 5-10 record. IN THE DOGHOUSE The sight of the Western Bulldogs CEO Ameet Bains plunging head first into the podium at the Past Players’ luncheon last Saturday was not on the agenda but it certainly got everyone’s attention. Thankfully no injuries were incurred, just some slightly dented pride, but nothing else. Ameet gathered his thoughts and told the group of the exciting developments coming for the club at the Whitten Oval in the future. Unfortunately, the on-field performance was not as inspiring, but that’s football. The new facilities and changes at the club’s home won’t be built in a day or a week, and neither will the team. I criticised the football media last week for its vulture mentality, but clubs must also look within and weed out the negative element constantly referred to as ‘insiders’ in article after article. These people do not deserve to be employed, as their loyalty is clearly up for sale.

The Tigers go into the Queen’s Birthday break a game clear on top of the ladder after spoiling Altona’s flawless record with a 49-point win in the top-of-the-table clash at Soldiers Reserve on Saturday. Ominously, Tigers coach Chris Gilham thinks his side has another gear to move up to, but he was impressed with the performance against Altona. “Our form leading in wasn’t great,” he said. “We were getting the wins but we weren’t playing our best footy. “Playing a team like Altona, who were also undefeated, was just the challenge we needed … the boys were definitely up for it.” Werribee Districts went into half-time with a handy 13-point lead. The Tigers appeared dangerous in attack from the outset, but they did leave some defensive holes in the first half. 60 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 6, 2018
“They got a few goals on the slingshot from the back 50,” Gilham said. “I thought we didn’t defend the corridor well on the way out and we weren’t set up well structurally behind the ball when we went inside 50.” The second half was even better offensively for Werribee Districts, which piled on 10 goals. As well, the Tigers were much better organised in defence, restricting Altona to just four goals. “We continued to score at the same rate, but we were able to dry them up a little bit, so that was pretty pleasing,” Gilham said. Where the game was won was in the midfield battle. Will Sullivan’s competitiveness shone through once again in the ruck as he made life a dream for the Werribee Districts onballers. Rhyce Prismall, the pick of the Tigers onball brigade, Matt Dean, Mark Pozzuto and Daniel Schibeci got silver service from their big man. A key to Werribee Districts’ undefeated start can be found in its forward line. The Tigers have built a multi-pronged attack that is hard to match up on.
Five players – Prismall, Trent Lee, Ryan Harrington, Chris Molivas and Cameron Lee – registered three goals apiece against Altona. “We pride ourselves on the fact we’ve got many avenues to goal,” Gilham said. “Last year, if Andrew Panayi didn’t play for us due to VFL commitments, we couldn’t kick a winning score. We had to look at it and decided that we really needed to share the scoring load. “Our aim was to have seven or eight players around the 20-goal mark.” Meanwhile, Hoppers Crossing had a comfortable 53-point win over Wyndhamvale, but probably missed out on a serious percentage boost because of wayward kicking. The Warriors finished with an unsightly 12.32. In division 2, Point Cook goes into the break with a 6-1 record after cruising to a 71-point victory over West Footscray. Manor Lakes was out-classed by ladder leader Yarraville-Seddon to the tune of 53 points. In division 3, top side Wyndham Suns had to dig deep to stave off a stubborn Glen Orden by 20 points, while Point Cook Centrals pummelled Braybrook by 109 points.

Behind the bid to create a new football franchise
A vision to bring A-League football to the west is here and Tarneit is the proposed home for a new team. Star Weekly sports reporter Lance Jenkinson reveals the key people behind the bid, their plans and what it could mean for soccer in the west ... Western Melbourne Group Holdings officially launched its bid for one of the A-League’s new licences last Friday. It has done so with a dream of bringing a professional A-League club to the western suburbs – more specifically the city of Wyndham. The bid team, made up of Maurice Bisetto, Steve Horvat, Lou Sticca, Tania Orr and Andrew Zinni, has worked hand-in-hand with Wyndham council over the past 12 months to bring the expression of interest to life. It is a significant day for the Wyndham community, with land at 1160 Sayers Road in Tarneit earmarked as a future home for an A-League expansion team, should the bid be successful. Western Melbourne Group would build a state-of-the-art 15,000-seat stadium on land provided by the council.
It would be part of a bigger sports precinct with the purpose-built soccer stadium being the main attraction. Speaking at the bid launch at Tarneit United Soccer Club, Bisetto, a partner at KPMG and leader of the Western Melbourne Group bid, made it official. “We’re here today to officially launch our bid for an A-League licence and to bring an A-League team to the west of Melbourne,” he said. “This is truly a momentous occasion for Australian football in Wyndham and the entire western Melbourne region. “The vision from day one was to have an A-League team in the west. “The dream was to have this team play in its own stadium, a world class facility that football fans can call home. “Thanks to the support from the Wyndham council, the dream and the vision is now real.”
A fast growing, multi-cultural region, the western suburbs would be a perfect location for an A-League team. Due to its proximity, the team would not only draw supporters from Wyndham, but also neighboring councils such as Melton, Hobsons Bay, Brimbank and Maribyrnong, and as far away as Geelong and Ballarat. Bisetto wants the Western Melbourne Group to be able to add to the rich football history that exists in the west. “Our ownership and bid teams are football people,” he said. “Their decisions will be made for the best of the football community. “We’re not here to claim that we own the past and the history, our commitment to the football family is to continue to grow that history. “To build for the future of our beautiful game in one of the fastest growing regions in our

country.” Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard was on hand to confirm the council’s support for the bid. If the bid is successful, he declared it had the potential to be “a game changer for our city”. “Being one of the fastest growing cities in Australia makes Wyndham the perfect place to become a home to a new A-League soccer team. “We have the population, we have the support, we have the land and Wyndham is ready. “The first step in achieving this vision for our city is through the Western Melbourne bid, securing one of the new A-League licences available. “I encourage soccer fans from across the west and Wyndham residents to get behind the bid and highlight why a new Western Melbourne soccer team is just what the game needs.”

By Lance Jenkinson Kurt Aylett is finally reaping the rewards of his persistence. The Werribee midfielder has so often been cursed with injuries that it could have broken a lesser willed person. But Aylett has taken the good with the bad, understanding that injuries are an unfortunate part of sport and even though he has suffered more than most in that department, he has come through it and is better for the experience. “My journey has been up and down like most footballers,” Aylett said. “At AFL level, I had a whole raft of injuries. “I finally debuted for Werribee at Geelong [in 2016] and unfortunately I was involved in a collision and needed a complete ankle reconstruction from that, so that set me back a fair way. “I was rapt to get back late last year and play the last five games in the VFL and it gave me some confidence going into my first pre-season in about three years.” Aylett played three games at the top level, but there always seemed to be an injury around the corner. He played one game for the GWS Giants and two games for Essendon before he was delisted at the end of 2015. A New South Wales product, Aylett decided to stay in Melbourne to pursue his landscaping apprenticeship, which is when he linked up with Werribee. Aylett was not content with how his career at the top level ended and wanted to make his mark with Werribee. “From the past, with my injuries, I wasn’t satisfied with what I got out of my football, so I wanted to get back and put together some good form at state league and see what happens,” he said. With his ankle fully healed, Aylett regained his touch with Werribee late last year. It allowed him to believe he can get back to playing senior football and offered a chance for him to go into the pre-season with confidence in his body. Eight games into 2018 and Aylett has played in every one of them. The 26-year-old might just be ready to deliver on his potential. He is thriving in the Werribee midfield, taking on whatever challenge is thrown his way by senior coach John Lamont. Aylett is just happy to be back and able to contribute to the team. “I get a lot of enjoyment and satisfaction in being available for my teammates and being able to play week in week out and be at training,” he said. “I just have that appreciation of the game.

Werribee recorded a thumping 9-1 win over CV Blazers in the Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 2 at Werribee Hockey Centre on Saturday. Jamie Beamish was on fire for the Tigers with a hat-trick, while Sam Huxtable scored a double. The Tigers improved to 4-4 on the season. In women’s Vic League 1, Werribee’s struggles continued with a 4-2 loss to the high flying CV Blazers. Claudia Beamish and Chloe Pickersgill scored for the second-last Tigers, but it was to no avail.

“Whatever the team needs, I’m there to contribute and play my part. That versatility is something that I’ve always had and I’ll continue to use that, whether it’s tagging one week or playing in the midfield or down back.” It has been a clean slate for everyone at Werribee, since the club decided to break away from their alignment with North Melbourne and go stand-alone, and, of course, the unveiling of their new state-of-the-art facilities at Avalon Airport Oval. As part of the leadership group, Aylett is getting to work in helping shape the on-field
future of the club, both this season and beyond. He says it is a “non-negotiable” as a leader to help guide the youngsters at the club. Aylett is also excited by the opportunity that presents to instil fresh values at the club that will live on forever. “We want to make it a family club from everyone involved, not just the players,” he said. “That’s building up the relationships with the volunteers, the physios, the trainers, all the coaching staff and the extended family. “When a young kid comes in, they will feel welcomed and that’s the main thing.”
