Fight for man’s best friend By Charlene Macaulay A former Werribee police sergeant is taking Victoria Police, WorkSafe and insurance company Gallagher Bassett to court for refusing to fund an assistance dog to treat his post-traumatic stress disorder. Ron Fenton said his mental health has improved dramatically since taking on pure-bred American hunting Labrador, Yogi, in March last year. Mr Fenton’s 40-year career with the police force took him from patrolling the streets of St Kilda in the 1970s and working with search and rescue, to returning to active duty in Werribee in 1996. In 1984, he was shot in the head after pursuing a man who had shot and killed a
security guard. On another occasion, he was bitten by a man claiming to have HIV. The stress has taken its toll and in 2016, Mr Fenton spent three weeks in the Austin Hospital’s post-traumatic stress recovery section, with the $16,611 medical bill paid by WorkSafe. Mr Fenton said having Yogi around had turned his life around. “I’ve cut my psychology visits down to nil, I’ve cut my psychiatric visits down to virtually nil, my medication has been dramatically reduced. “I no longer have any night terrors … my mental stability has been improved enormously,” he said. “I’m asking for $2000 a year to feed him and take him to the vet. One would think that if
you’ve got a choice of paying $16,000 for 21 days in hospital, or $2000 per year [you’d pick the cheaper option].” Last week, Mr Fenton instructed his legal team to begin proceedings against Victoria Police, WorkSafe and Gallagher Bassett for their refusal to accept Yogi as a legitimate medical expense of his workplace-induced PTSD. A WorkSafe spokeswoman said it could not comment on individual cases for privacy reasons. “WorkSafe strives to continuously improve its service to help injured workers in their recovery. This includes staying abreast of, and utilising new and emerging treatments which have been clinically proven to be effective,” she said.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the organisation used best practice and evidenced-based approaches to deliver welfare services and support to its members. “While we cannot always prevent a police officer’s exposure to trauma, we are working hard to ensure that our employees are prepared and supported to minimise the impact of such events. “To this end, we commissioned an independent mental health review in 2016 and have been working hard over the past few years to implement its recommendations and improve the mental health of our workforce. “This includes working to better engage with retired police officers.” Gallagher Bassett did not respond to Star Weekly’s request for comment by deadline.

Wyndham, city of many storeys By Charlene Macaulay Apartment living appears to be well on the way to making itself at home in Wyndham. A 10-storey building overlooking Wyndham Park and the Werribee River is the latest high-rise development to be put on the market. The $47 million Edge One apartment block is selling 100 apartments with one, two and three bedrooms off the plan. They will set buyers back anywhere between $330,000 to $707,500. The development is stage one of the overall RiverEdge development, which also includes
plans for a new 8300-square-metre Wyndham city community learning hub over five levels and another 200-plus apartments. Burbank Group development general manager Neil Anderson said the new offering was “an ideal opportunity for young families, professionals and investors, as well as people looking to downsize or relocate to the west, who desire the convenience of a well-connected lifestyle”. Over in Williams Landing, developers Cedar Woods has sold all 42 apartments from its third apartment block for the area, Lancaster.
Cedar Woods chief operating officer Patrick Archer says that the demand for medium-density living in Melbourne’s west could be partly attributed to booming population growth and changing lifestyle preferences. “We can see that an apartment lifestyle is no longer limited to the Melbourne CBD and inner-city suburbs,” Mr Archer said. “The success of all Williams Landing apartments so far demonstrates that this is the type of product buyers want.” According to the Real Estate Institute of

Bin worth the wait for council waste initiative
Anitha Perumal is bringing the art of classical Indian bharatnatyam dancing to Wyndham. Mrs Perumal is teaching the dance style – which originated centuries ago in Tamil Nadu, south India – at the Manor Lakes and Tarneit Community Learning Centres, as well as in Point Cook. Mrs Perumal said her parents were “very passionate” about bharatnatyam dancing and she began taking classes at the age of four, under the tutelage of her gurus Kamatchi Jayaraman and Vimala Chandrashekar. “As a child, I did around 500 stage shows back in India,” Mrs Perumal said. She said she studied bharatnatyam for about 25 years, but took time off to have her daughter, who is now seven. Mrs Perumal said with her husband’s encouragement, she began dancing again, teaching some of her friend’s children. “What I like about teaching the art form is that whenever I teach somebody, I feel like I am transforming my knowledge to them,” she said. Mrs Perumal said that dancing bharatnatyam helped students to develop confidence, dedication and discipline. “I normally recommend that anyone aged from five to 60 can do it,” she said. “It is an art form with some many emotions – happiness, sadness, anger, courage, fear, wonder, delight and peace, all these things will come in the dance and with your expressions, the audience can understand the story you are telling.” The bharatnatyam classes are held from 4-5pm Mondays at the Manor Lakes Community Learning Centre and 4-5pm Tuesdays at the Tarneit Community Learning Centre. They’re the bins that have positioned Wyndham council as a world leader in waste diversion. Wyndham has been ranked fifth in the world in a list of the top 25 smart cities with the highest waste diversion ratio, with its smart bin technology beating out initiatives by New York’s Times Square Alliance and Miami Beach in Florida. The council has diverted more than 386,000 litres of recycling away from landfill since installing the 32 smart bins throughout the streets of Werribee and Point Cook 12 months ago. The bins, which have solar panels on top, automatically crush and compact waste, allowing them to hold up to 600 litres of rubbish and recycling – five times more than the average street bin. The bins also notify council staff when they are full and need to be emptied. Wyndham council’s smart city portfolio holder Aaron An said the results spoke for themselves. “This is a great result that shows how thinking outside of the box and implementing new technologies to tackle some old problems can make a real difference,” Cr An said. “From our award-winning CityLens initiative that show users the future of our city in augmented reality, to these environmentally friendly bins, Wyndham is leading the way in harnessing new and emerging technologies to solve every day problems and improve the lives of our residents.” There are currently no plans to roll out more bins.

School plans to fill learning gap By Charlene Macaulay A south-eastern suburbs private school has plans to expand into Wyndham. Lighthouse Christian College, which runs a K-12 school in Keysborough, has lodged plans with Wyndham council for a campus for 448 students – provisionally called Lighthouse Christian College West Campus – on a 9-hectare site on Point Cook Homestead Road. According to the plans, Lighthouse Christian College has received more than 150 expressions of interest via the college website
from families wanting to send their children to an independent school in Point Cook or Werribee South. “It is clear that the provision of education facilities by the state government has not kept pace with local demand – Saltwater Coast residents, for instance, currently have no local government school, have a local Catholic school that is at capacity, and therefore Saltwater Coast and other nearby estate parents are required to send their children to Altona Green for their education,� the plans stated. The council’s new Schools 4 Wyndham campaign has called for a new secondary school in Truganina by 2018, a primary school in Williams Landing by 2019, a primary school in Point Cook by 2020, a primary school in Tarneit by 2022, a primary school in Truganina by 2022 and a primary school in Werribee’s West by 2023.

A Citizen of the Year will be chosen from among the seven category winners. Last year’s Citizen of the Year, Daphne Womersley, said the accolade had still not sunk in for her. The Werribee resident, who is in her 80s, has spent more than six decades as a leader with the Werribee Guides, volunteered with St John’s Ambulance for the past 47 years, has been a member of the Red Cross for 35 years and is involved with the Country Women’s Association and Wyndham Ladies Auxiliary. “I enjoy the things I do and I enjoy helping others,� Ms Womersley said. “I don’t like to be sitting down and not doing anything – I like to be helping with things, and I think this is why I spread myself around a bit.� Nominations are open until June 24. Altona Loop trains shut down By Goya Dmytryshchak Werribee line trains on the Altona Loop will shut down from 7.30pm on June 16 until July 30 as the level crossing in Kororoit Creek Road, outside the Mobil Altona refinery, is removed. Buses will replace trains in the Altona Loop, transporting commuters between Seaholme, Altona and Westona stations. Werribee line trains will run express between Newport and Laverton. The train line closure is because of a 43-day “construction blitz”, the government said in a written statement on Monday.
There would also be some off-peak closures on the Werribee line between Newport and Werribee and some overnight closures of Kororoit Creek Road, according to the statement. As part of the removal, 800 metres of track will be duplicated to allow trains to pass each other on the Altona Loop. During the train shutdown, a dual rail bridge will be built over Kororoit Creek Road and the track will be duplicated between Altona junction and Kororoit Creek. Westona station is the only place on the Altona Loop where trains can pass each other,

but the new partial duplication will provide another passing point and reduce the number of trains forced to bypass the loop via the Werribee line, the government said. Altona Loop Group spokeswoman Jennifer Williams said commuters hoped the partial duplication would reduce the frequency of trains bypassing the Altona Loop.
“The project must ensure that adequate bus replacements are available so that people are able to get to where they are going,” she said. “There is also concern that the Laverton service passengers will not be able to fit on the overcrowded Werribee peak-hour services.” Ms Williams said many people had abandoned using the train because of unreliable and infrequent services. “We need reliable services so that people don’t have to drive, either to Newport or Laverton or the entire way to their destination. With many new developments in Seaholme and Altona, improvements are overdue and necessary.”
Rainbow rocks their day Students at a Hoppers Crossing school celebrated all the colours of the rainbow on Friday. Derrimut Heath Primary School, which is part of Baden Powell College, held a Rainbow Colour Day. Students from prep to grade 2 wore bright clothes of all hues for the event. They also created a human rainbow in the playground and took part in colour-based art, science, literacy and numeracy learning activities. Students at Baden Powell’s Tarneit campus also held a Rainbow Colour Day last Monday, taking part in an arts project for Education Week. The students painted rocks, inspired by the book Only One You by Linda Kranz, which is about how everyone has something to contribute to the world.

want to propose a change to the three Rs, which have always confused me, because two of them don’t actually start with the letter R, but that’s a different topic completely. We are in a new age of technology and information which is not governed by the traditional way of the past. In this world of phones, tablets and apps, what do we really need to grow as a society? Of the three Rs, we definitely need to keep Reading, if only to be able to enjoy this column every week. ’Riting is also a staple for important things such as writing columns, Christmas cards and messages on the fridge. ’Rithmatic though is gone, a dinosaur from a bygone era. It has been gazumped by the calculator, which has gone from the size of a large phone book to be a part of every phone and computer program. No one has to actually add anything up anymore, or do sums in their head like working out change for a 20 if you spend $14.80 (it’s $5.20, by the way). Let’s replace ’Rithmatic with a more important R in this day and age.
Rage? While that is probably appropriate, it is not the one I am proposing. I would rather nominate something that will have a positive impact on society if learned at an early age. How about Responsibility? There are many who clearly have no idea what this word means, let alone embrace it at any stage. Others think it is always accompanied by the words “not my” or “that’s somebody else’s”. It is only for celebrated triumphs that we hear “I take full responsibility”. When a disaster happens, responsibility is thrown around like a hot potato. That’s when the new ABC kicks in – A for Accuse, B for Blame and C for Cry. This is the new natural order of damage control for 2018. I don’t think we want these ABCs taught in schools anytime soon, though I think kids are picking them up pretty quickly from adults. Responsibility is something parents should be not only teaching but embracing. Like everything in life it has its good and bad moments, its highs and lows. But that is part of the package. ■

Homicide Squad detectives have charged a man with murder, following the discovery of a 69-year-old woman’s body inside a home in Taworri Crescent, Werribee on May 25. The Werribee man, 38, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday and was remanded to appear again on June 1. Oliver is one fur-tunate feline By Alesha Capone Seven-week-old kitten Oliver might have used up one of his nine lives. Earlier this month, the little furball – who is also known as Olly – was rescued by Wyndham police, SES and CFA members after getting stuck in a pipe beneath a portable classroom at the Islamic College of Melbourne in Tarneit. Constable Joshua Pugh said staff at the school called police after they heard the kitten meowing from below the portable.
Constable Pugh said he and another officer took it in turns to try to catch the kitten. “When we put our hand down the pipe, he kept running away – he didn’t know that we were trying to help,” he said. A police sergeant brought some tuna and Twisties to the scene, which they lowered into the pipe using a scarf, but not even food could tempt the kitten out. Constable Pugh said CFA members attended and cut some of the pipe away, followed by an SES crew, who dug from the entry point of the
pipe and blocked both ends, allowing the kitten to be caught. Afterwards, the college principal took the kitten to the University of Melbourne’s U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital. Small animal medicine veterinary nurse Jennifer Peart said the clinic’s staff named the tiny kitten Oliver. Ms Peart said her aunt’s cat had recently died, so she gave Oliver to her aunt, who calls him Olly. Ms Peart said her aunt “absolutely adores Olly” who is now going “really well”.

Cat call for blood bank The University of Melbourne’s U-Vet Animal Hospital has launched a blood bank for cats. Staff at the Werribee clinic have put out a call for owners who can volunteer their cats to donate blood to the bank. Blood Donor Program co-ordinator Kerry Bozicevic said ill cats sometimes needed emergency blood transfusions, in the same way humans did. “If a cat loses blood due to trauma, surgery, immune system diseases, cancer or has a blood clotting disorder, it may require a blood transfusion to survive and to return to a meaningful life,” Mrs Bozicevic said Mrs Bozicevic said that at present, if a feline patient needed blood, vets would call on one of their regular donor cats, such as James. She said this could result in delays of between three to six hours in getting blood to a cat in need. Mrs Bozicevic said that in contrast, having blood on hand for emergency and critical care could help to save a cat’s life.
“One blood donation can potentially save the lives of two cats,” she said. “So we need lots of donor cats.” To donate blood, cats must be aged between one and five years old, weigh four kilograms or more, be healthy with a calm temperament, up-to-date with vaccinations and parasite control, a Victorian resident (who has never travelled out of the state) and not a blood transfusion recipient. Nearly 1400 Wyndham emergency service workers and hospital staff have been attacked in their line of work since 2014. A total 180 instances of assaulting a police, emergency services or other authorised officer were recorded in Wyndham between 2014 and 2017, according to state opposition data. Werribee Mercy Hospital staff members were subjected to 1197 assaults and verbal attacks between January 1, 2014, and April 30, 2018. The figures give weight to government moves to get tough on sentencing for such offences. Last week, the state government announced that it would toughen statutory minimum prison sentencing laws so that attacks resulting in injuries to emergency workers will result in compulsory prison time for offenders. Premier Daniel Andrews said the reforms were aimed at protecting those who dedicated their lives to looking after the community. “This sends the strongest possible message – if you attack and injure an emergency worker, you will go to jail.” Mercy Health health services chief executive Linda Mellors said everyone had a right to feel safe at work. “Too often our emergency department staff are physically or verbally threatened by patients and visitors when they are just trying to do their job,” Adjunct Professor Mellors said. “Abusing our staff in any form is never OK.” United Firefighters Union secretary Peter Marshall said that while he endorsed the government’s stance, some form of intervention was needed to prevent the attacks from happening in the first place. “I think it’s a sad reflection on society that we need legislation to protect people who save lives,” he said.
Hoppers Crossing teenager Bella Paige is continuing to wow television viewers across the nation as she sings her way through Channel 9’s The Voice. The 16-year-old said that when she auditioned for the show, she did not expect to make the top 12. But Bella said she was thrilled to be snapped up to join the team of one of the show’s four mentors – and one of her idols – Kelly Rowland. “I’ve learned so much from her, it’s been the most amazing experience to be able to work with someone of her calibre,” Bella said. “She always says, ‘Rehearse until you can’t get it wrong’.” Bella said she had especially enjoyed singing in the live shows of The Voice. During Sunday night’s episode, the second live show for the season, she sang the Ariana Grande tune No Tears Left To Cry. “My family are so happy for me and have supported me for my whole life, especially my mum – I don’t know where I’d be without her,” Bella said. Bella said that the staff and students of Westbourne Grammar School, where she is studying year 11, had also been “incredible”. The Voice continues on Sunday, June 3, from 7pm on Channel 9. Dash Cam films near tragedy By Alesha Capone Dash Cam footage captured in Werribee, which shows a car becoming airborne and narrowly missing another vehicle on the Princes Highway, has been seen by thousands of online viewers. The owner of the footage, Johnny (who asked for his last name to be withheld), sent the video to the Dash Cam Owners Australia Facebook page earlier this month. The footage, which has been watched more than 117,000 times, was recorded on May 3 about 9.40am.

next to the road. The car becomes airborne and lands on the freeway, forcing another vehicle to veer out of its way, before stopping at the freeway barrier’s fence. Johnny said that he witnessed the Camry being driven erratically before it reached the freeway. “What I was thinking was, this person’s going to cause an accident,” Johnny said. “When he started going off road, as seen in footage, I thought he would realise and stop, but then he kept going.” Johnny said that both he and three other cars pulled over, and that the Camry’s driver
appeared to get out of his vehicle and lay on the ground. Johnny said he gave a statement to police after they arrived on the scene, and later supplied officers with his Dash Cam footage. A Victoria Police spokesman said the circumstances surrounding the single-vehicle crash were being investigated. The driver of the vehicle, a 31-year-old Werribee man, was taken to hospital and subsequently discharged. He is assisting police with their inquiries. Mercy support mission Mercy Health is caring for the carers. It has started a support group, known as Tuesday Chats, for those with family members and loved ones in palliative care. The group was launched last Tuesday during National Palliative Care Week. Tuesday Chats will meet fortnightly at Werribee Mercy Hospital to give carers and medical staff opportunities to exchange information and discuss their experiences and coping strategies. Carers involved with either the Gabrielle Jennings Centre for Palliative Care (a 12-bed inpatient unit at Werribee Mercy Hospital) or Mercy Palliative Care (a home-based palliative care service providing care to patients in their own homes or residential aged-care homes) are welcome to attend. Gabrielle Jennings Centre nurse unit manager Deanne Layton said the support
group’s discussions would be tailored to the needs of carers. “We have identified a need for a dedicated palliative care support group for carers within our community,” Ms Layton said. “Carers play a vital role in palliative care. However, they often put their needs last while they focus on the care of their loved one. “A dedicated support group will give them the opportunity for some self-care each fortnight for at least 90 minutes.” Call the Gabrielle Jennings Centre for Palliative Care on 8754 3731 for more details. Trees face the chop in makeover By Alesha Capone More than 100 trees and plants could be removed from Wyndham Park as part of the site’s redevelopment. Both Wyndham council and the state government are funding the $11.4 million project, which is proposed to include a cycling path and trail at Comben Drive,
Werribee. Engineering company AECOM has prepared a report into the bicycle trail’s construction on behalf of the council, which stated that about 106 trees and plants will need be removed as part of the park’s redevelopment. The report stated that although trees at the park will be retained where possible, “selective removal” will occur along the northern
boundary of the site which abuts the Werribee railway line and is close to proposed playspaces to be installed near Werribee Street. The report also stated that four semi-mature river red gums were among the vegetation to be removed, which were planted for their “amenity”. Overall, the redevelopment of Wyndham Park is proposed to include new playground
equipment, picnic and barbecue areas, pathways, boardwalks, signage, lighting, viewing decks and seating, public toilets and revegetation of the banks of the Werribee River. The proposed bicycle path, if built, will have a total length of about 510 metres and will adjoin three of the park’s entrances. The estimated cost of building the bike trail is $200,000.
New program a good fit A new indoor community group fitness program being launched in Truganina is aimed at residents who want to become more active. The Grange Community Centre has teamed up with Wyndham-based exercise instructors and trainers to start the Mainview Pavilion program. Grange community development officer Karen Cain said it was hoped the exercise program would get more residents using the $2.987 million pavilion, launched by Wyndham council last year. “The program is designed to activate the sporting pavilion, activate the community and create opportunities for social connection and also provide the community with the expertise of personal trainers at a low cost,” she said. “The program will include community group training, which with include elements of circuit, boxing and HIIT program, along with Pilates and yoga classes.” The program will run Mondays to Thursdays, starting on June 4. Community group training will be at
10.30am on Mondays, 11.30am on Wednesdays and 1pm on Thursdays. Pilates will be held at 11.30am on Tuesdays and yoga at 11.30am on Mondays and 2pm on Thursdays. The first week is free for participants, after which classes will cost $15 (discounts are available for multiple sessions). Participants are welcome to bring children along to the sessions. Mainview Pavilion, partially funded by a $1.2 million grant as part of the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund, is located at Mainview Boulevard Reserve in Truganina. A new rule book for councils By Ewen McRae A bill introduced into state Parliament last week is shaping as the biggest change to local government laws in nearly 20 years. The Local Government Bill 2018 will repeal the Local Government Act 1989 and is aimed at lifting standards of governance and making councillors more accountable to ratepayers. In an Australian-first, the new act will require councils to develop four-year budgets and meet higher standards in strategic planning and
financial management. Mayors will be required to report annually to their communities on council’s progress in delivering these aims. Kororoit MP and Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz introduced the bill, saying it would help improve councils and the community. “We are bringing this act into the 21st century – helping make councils more accountable and focused on the needs of their communities,” she said. “Mayors and councillors who behave badly will be gone for a year – the days of
them acting with impunity are over. We want councils focused on the long-term and these changes will help them do exactly that.” The bill will usher in landmark reforms, such as giving the minister the power to suspend individual councillors who pose a significant threat to the governance of a council for up to a year, clearly defining sexual harassment under the Councillor Code of Conduct and introducing the power to remove councillors for serious sexual harassment. The bill will also introduce measures to
ensure service charges levied by councils do not exceed the cost of those services. Victorian Local Government Association chief executive Kathryn Arndt said the bill was a step in the right direction. “Elected representatives at any level of government must act with integrity and show leadership in good governance,” she said. “Having been elected by the local community, it is vital that councillors serve in the interests of their community and make transparent and accountable decisions.”
Happy to be bookish Alamanda K-9 College pupils have read thousands of books for this year’s Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge. Teacher Allison Gatt, who is co-ordinating the Point Cook school’s participation in the annual reading event, said this year’s tally of books read stood – so far – at 9282. Ms Gatt said 2414 prep to year 9 Alamanda students had enrolled to take part in this year’s challenge. “Last year was our most successful year at Alamanda,” she said. “We had 1361 students completing the challenge, with every student in Prep to year 2 finishing. “It was also the first year that we had secondary students participating. “We are looking at challenging ourselves again and achieving higher this year.” Ms Gatt said reading was one of the most important fundamental skills for students to master.

A generous donation has spawned the creation of a new ceramics studio at Wyndham Park Community Shed. When ceramic enthusiast Leon Frankcon downsized from his Williamstown home to Heathglen Retirement Village, he donated his extensive collection of pottery tools, including a ceramics wheel and kiln, to the nearby community shed, which led to the construction of a purpose-built ceramics studio. Mr Frankcon, a former teacher and principal, will go back to the classroom and run intensive six-week ceramic classes for beginners.

Volunteers in spotlight By Goya Dmytryshchak When a young person ends up in police custody in Melbourne’s west, Wyndham Vale’s Steve Turner could get the call. A volunteer with the Youth Referral and Independent Person Program (YRIPP), he attends police interviews when a parent or guardian isn’t available. He is one of the estimated 80,000 volunteers in Melbourne’s west whose contribution to the community was recognised during National Volunteer Week from May 21-27.

It’s just one of many roles available through Altona-based Volunteer West. Mr Turner, who is also a football coach and youth worker, has been a YRIPP volunteer for 18 months, supporting young people while they are being interviewed by police and at bail hearings. Volunteer West community development co-ordinator Laura Rouhan said this year’s theme of National Volunteer Week was Give a little. Get a lot. “Working within six local government areas across Melbourne’s west, Volunteer West connects people to volunteer opportunities in their local communities. “Volunteering gives you the opportunity to develop new skills, remember lost ones and try new things.”

MY WYNDHAM Dean Cox was awarded Firefighter of the Year at the Werribee Fire Brigade’s annual dinner this month. He chats with Alesha Capone.
I joined in 2012. My daughter Olivia joined the junior brigade when she was 12, she’s 22 now. I saw how the brigade was doing such a good job with Olivia, the positive input that it was having, so it encouraged me to join up. Did Olivia have any advice for you, when you joined up? She did have some words of wisdom, but she was always more advanced in her fire skills than me. There have been jobs where I’ve been driving the truck and she’s been in the back. I remember my first job, I drove the truck with the sirens going because it was a code one emergency. When I got to the job, I got out to get the water going, and I was so excited I forgot to turn the siren off. Olivia had to tell me to turn the sirens off. What do you enjoy about being involved with the CFA? I think it’s challenging yourself to perform, to want to be a team member – you want to be a valuable member. I think whenever we get the truck out, we’re there to give 100 per cent. Besides fires, we get called out to road accidents and various rescue jobs.
We also do a lot of community work, we do a lot of kindergarten visits and the Scouts and that kind of thing. I think one of the values here is that we’re always learning. Also, I enjoy the opportunity to share quality time with one of my daughters and make a lot of good friends. The people around this place make it what it is. We train Monday nights, but we have people who train at extra sessions too, because they want to make sure we’re on top of everything we need to know, which shows the dedication of the members. How long have you lived in Werribee, and what else do you do, apart from volunteering with the CFA? I’ve lived in Werribee for 46 years with my wife and later, my two daughters. I have a long involvement with the Werribee Centrals. I’m the junior coach co-ordinator of the Werribee Districts Football Club. I still spend one or two nights a week there and on Sundays I watch junior football. For years, I worked for a slate roofing company and I would teach TAFE sessionally. They then offered me a job, and I’m coming up to my 15 years there. In 2005, I was awarded a Churchill Fellowship, which was pretty special. I was able to travel the world to study slate roofs. I’m still on the committee for the Churchill Fellows’ Association of Victoria.

There were only 108 dogs at the Werribee sheepdog trials held at the Board of Works farm last week. Mr. H. L. B. Powell, who sponsors the trials each year (this is the 22nd), said that the summer drought had meant there were not as many dogs.
The Mayor of Werribee Cr Peter Hudson and civic officials have claimed the State Government abandoned strategies in an ALP policy statement following a Cabinet decision, last Tuesday, to not site a $10 million drug and chemical safety evaluation centre in Werribee. The Council also claims the Government’s decision was politically based.
The president of the Wyndham branch of the Liberal Party, Mr John O’Rourke, has slammed the Premier calling on him to resign over his handling of the toxic dump issue. “We don’t believe he’s listening to us. A leader who’s not willing to listen to his community should think about his position,” Mr O’Rourke told the Banner yesterday.
Wyndham residents are waiting almost four years for dentures and two years for general dental care at ISIS Primary Care in Hoppers Crossing. The State Government’s Your Hospitals report has revealed that of 58 public dental clinics to lodge reports, the waiting times at more than 30 were 22 months for general care and 20 months for dental care, as of December last year.

Ruchi Lal believes the benefits of salt therapy cannot be overstated. All puffed with pride Werribee actress Zenya Carmellotti is starring in magical comedy PUFFS, at the Alex Theatre in St Kilda. The show is subtitled Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic. Carmellotti, 21, described her character Sally-Anne Perks as bubbly and outgoing. “She’s a fun little character who loves magic, she loves being magic and is an adorable character,” she said. Carmellotti, has previously performed in
other theatrical shows including BARE, The Color Purple and Dreamgirls and said she would like to pursue a career as a full-time performer. PUFFS is on 7.30pm Tuesdays to Saturdays and 5.30pm Sundays. Child-friendly matinees are on Saturdays at 2pm and Sundays 1pm, until July 8 (evening shows are recommended for viewers aged 15+). It was a familiar issue for Werribee in its 51-point loss to Sandringham in the Victorian Football League at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday. Its inability to halt the momentum of an opposition team for an extended period saw the deficit grow like wildfire on the scoreboard. SPORT Point Cook still finding its way Point Cook’s ho hum form has continued in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 3. The Jets are neither good nor bad as they continue to split the points with their opponents. They have drawn five of their past seven matches, which is frustrating for coach Craig Filer and his newly promoted team. Point Cook held a lead against Williamstown at Saltwater Reserve, but it was short-lived. Jonathan Dunn put the Jets into the lead early in the first half, but his goal cancelled out just five minutes later when Gorgi Niceski found an equaliser for Williamstown. So it continues a strange start for Point Cook, which is yet to work out its place in the pecking order. A trip to Epping City, the runaway ladder leader with seven wins from nine starts, awaits Point Cook this Saturday. In men’s state league 1, Hoppers Crossing endured its heaviest defeat of the season, going down 4-0 to North Sunshine Eagles at Larissa Reserve.

The Reds have lost their past two matches to fall into the relegation zone. The Shaun Barbara-coached Reds will host an in-form Keilor Park at Grange Reserve this Saturday. In men’s state league 4, Truganina Hornets found their mojo with a 3-0 win over Laverton
at Laverton Park Reserve. Federico Rossini produced a double for the Hornets, while Hamsa Mohamed scored the other goal. Despite their poor recent form, the Hornets are second on the ladder, still eight points behind top-placed Western Eagles. In men’s state league 5, West Point throttled Lara United 6-1 on a day when Paul Dickie fired in a hat-trick at Lara Recreation Reserve. In women’s state league 2, Hoppers Crossing maintained its flawless form, making it six wins from six starts. The Reds had to overcome a tough examination from Fitzroy City before emerging with a 2-1 win. Reds striker Julia Budiongo-Batota notched her 10th goal for the season, while Regina Vicedor completed the scoring. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The
football scribes believe the Bulldogs are in a world of pain and their season, as far as finals are concerned, is shot to bits. They may well be proved correct, but the vulture mentality of the AFL press corps is not healthy for the game. While the press is not paid to be an AFL cheer squad, I also see little value in the nature of many of their attacks on coaches and players. I would love to see a panel of coaches watching a press conference and passing judgment on the performance of each journalist or marking their stories out of 10 for accuracy, flair and fairness. How about a group of coaches calling for a football writer to be sacked or claiming he or she has lost his workmates the way scribes say coaches have lost the players? I doubt we will see a football writer resign because sales of the paper are down, but the future of an AFL coach is a constant source of speculation. The same scribes who lauded Luke Beveridge two seasons ago are now questioning his methods and ability.
Congratulations to the Williamstown VFLW team, which notched up its historic first win last weekend by beating Richmond. Williamstown is a club that has been through the ringer but has always come out the right end of the equation.

Lopsided results in any sport are cause for concern and uncompetitive thrashings create questions about the commitment of players, especially in a sport played in the cold and wet of winter. The first year of the WRFL women’s competition is facing that challenge. Hopefully, the players understand that Rome wasn’t built in a day – nor are strong, competitive football teams.

While females are flocking to the game, the same can’t be said of the male population, especially at the top end of the underage competition, with only six teams in the WRFL under-19s. Obviously, a big percentage of this age group is playing senior football, but in recent years the drop off in teams and numbers has been dramatic. The recent win by the representative under 19 teams shows there is no lack of talent, but the depth and interest has fallen off. Jobs, study, relationships and life kick in at this age and sport gets dropped down the priority list. It is a problem the game needs to address and solve.

Werribee’s cross to bear By Lance Jenkinson Having featured in the past three grand finals and entering the season as the two-time defending premiers, Werribee Bears have got a target on their backs and all other teams want to bring them down. The Bears answer to that is to continue raising the bar, take no short cuts in their preparation or no half measure in any games. It is the reason why the Bears are still No. 1, holding a 6-0 record and again the team to beat in 2018. “Every team plays their best game against us,” Bears co-coach Josh Makiri said. “We train hard for it, we’re fitter and we worked hard for each other. We play for one another, our boys.” Werribee has been put under the pump in each of its past two matches. The Bears trailed at half-time against Casey Warriors two weeks
ago and came back to win convincingly and trailed again at half-time on Saturday against fellow western suburbs outfit Altona Roosters and came back to register a victory. Not only did the Bears run down the Roosters after staring at a 14-10 half-time deficit at Haines Drive Reserve, they romped home for a 34-18 win over a big rival. “We just feel like our fitness gets us through,” Makiri said. “We play for 80 minutes, we don’t play for 50 or 60. Teams can’t play for 60 minutes against us.” It was a satisfying victory for Werribee over Altona. The two sides have fiercely locked horns from the day the Bears arrived as an expansion club. “It’s always a tough occasion playing against the Altona Roosters,” Makiri said. “They always bring their best. “It has been a rivalry for the past few years.” Frank Vaaua was damaging for Werribee in
the second row. Vaaua ran hard on offence and produced some stinging tackles in defence. Phil Pese’s calmness under pressure in the half-back role was telling. Being a former Bears player-coach, Pese just knows how to direct the team around the park and finds chinks in the opposition armour that others cannot see. Kuros Metuariki continues to shine. The young full-back will keep staking his claims for games in the Melbourne Storm under 20 team. “He’s playing well for us, he’s our kicker and a try scorer,” Makiri said. “He has the ability to get us back into good territory, his runs out of dummy half have been real good and his return of the football has been real strong. “For a young kid, he puts his body on the line as well.” Werribee faces bottom side Waverley Panthers at Fregon Reserve on Saturday.

Tigers get the job done in gritty derby Werribee Districts survived a tough examination from bottom-of-the-ladder Wyndhamvale in a Western Region Football League division 1 derby at Wyndhamvale South Oval on Saturday. The two sides had been poles apart in the opening five weeks, with the Tigers sitting pretty as one of only two undefeated sides in the competition and Wyndhamvale holding up the ladder without a win. But these Wyndham battles seem to bring the best out of the local sides and that was certainly the case on Saturday, with Werribee Districts notching up an 18-point win. Werribee Districts had its nose in front all day, but only by bare margins. The Tigers eventually wore the home side down, but it took a spectacular six-goal performance from forward Cameron Lee to extend their winning streak to six. Others to impress for the Tigers were Trent Lee, who kicked two goals, Daniel Montalto, captain Daniel Schibeci and Chris Molivas, who also jagged two goals.
Josh Mould continued his fine form to be named best for Wyndhamvale, while Nathan Bisset kicked three goals and Todd Kriehn added two. Werribee Districts will host this Saturday’s top-of-the-table blockbuster with Altona at Soldiers Reserve, while Wyndhamvale can look forward to another Wyndham derby when it makes the short trip to Hoppers Crossing. Hoppers Crossing is licking its wounds after going down to Sunshine Kangaroos by 37 points at Kinder Smith Reserve. It was one-way traffic from start to finish as the Kangaroos registered 34 scoring shots to 17. Mitch Palma was named best for Hoppers Crossing, while Daniel Strnak managed three goals against the tide. In division 2, Manor Lakes had a gritty 17-point win over West Footscray to move into fourth spot. Nathan Montague had a day out for the Storm with five goals, while Mitchell Davis booted four. Point Cook consolidated its hold on second with a big 43-point win over Parkside on
the road at Henry Turner Reserve. The Bulldogs were dominant after trailing by 11 at quarter-time, kicking 12 of the last 16 goals of the game. In division 3, Wyndham Suns continued their hot start to the season with a 36-point win over Braybrook at Pennell Reserve. Point Cook Centrals posted a 95-point win over Laverton to maintain a firm grip on second spot. Brent Sheean kicked two goals in a best-on-ground showing for the Sharks, while Tyley Huynh was a superb finisher with four goals. In senior women, Manor Lakes achieved perfection once again, holding West Footscray scoreless in a 160-point win. Kellee McIntosh booted 11 goals for the Storm, while Yana Frontczak kicked five. Warriors nail crucial win By Lance Jenkinson Westbourne Grammarians weren’t in season-on-the-line territory, but they were close. With only two wins from their opening seven games, the Warriors needed to find a way against an Aquinas side in a similar predicament in Victorian Amateur Football Association division 3. The Warriors got the job done, holding on for a brave 12-point win at the Westbourne School Ground on Saturday, getting their season back on track in the process. They are two wins outside the top four and have renewed hope of challenging for a finals berth. Warriors coach Justin Johns was delighted. “It was a big game,” he said. “You could see from the start that both sides wanted it because it makes it hard for the loser and the winner gets back into contention for the top four spot. To get the win was pleasing to say the least.” After a ferocious opening, Westbourne slowly built a lead across the second and third quarters to hold a healthy 26-point advantage at three-quarter time. Aquinas refused to go away and caused a few nerves for the Warriors with a fight-back in the last quarter. “I was a little bit nervous late in the game and being 2-5 does that to you,” Johns said. “The first half of the last quarter, they got heaps of numbers to the fall of the footy and it made it hard for us to gain control. “Fortunately, they missed a few chances and to our boys’ credit, the leaders stood up in the last half of the last quarter, which got us some forward 50 entries.” Apart from the early stages of the last quarter, it was a fairly consistent performance from Westbourne. The Warriors kicked four goals in each of the first three quarters, three in the last and shared the load with nine individual goalkickers. Johns was impressed with the brand of football his team displayed in a pressure game. “We moved the ball really quick and that was something we spoke about doing before the game,” he said. “We wanted people to walk away from the game and say it was an attractive game of footy. “We always want to go out and win the game and to kick four goals in just about every quarter is a step in the right direction.” Michael Culliver was colossal for Westbourne. The captain led from the front as he always seems to do. Werribee Devils on fire The surging form of the Werribee Devils shows no signs of abating in the Big V basketball women’s division 1. The Devils have made it five wins out of the past six games with a commanding 71-56 victory over Latrobe City Energy at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night. A monster third quarter was the catalyst to another Devils triumph. After trailing by four at half-time, the Devils ran rampant in the third with a 30-9 quarter and were out of sight by the start of the fourth. Another huge outing from import Alyssa Bennett inspired Werribee. Bennett produced 27 points, including three threes, 13 rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead the way for the Devils. Jessica Slade and Georgia Tauschke were the other Devils starters to have a say. Slade finished with 12 points and five rebounds, while Tauschke had 10 points and six boards. Jessy Price was strong off the bench with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals, but went just one-from-nine from three-point land. Werribee has squared the season ledger at 6-6. The Devils will hit the road to face Warrnambool Mermaids in a finals-like game at The Arc Sports Stadium on Saturday night. It’s panic time for the Werribee Devils in the men’s state championship after slumping to a third straight loss. The Devils went down 92-83 to Casey Cavaliers at Casey Stadium on Sunday.
