Aged-care jobs limbo By Charlene Macaulay Up to 100 Wyndham council jobs are in limbo due to the introduction of the federal government’s aged-care reforms. Wyndham council voted last week to continue offering in-home support services – which includes domestic assistance, personal care and respite – until federal funding ends on June 30, 2020. After that, it is likely that the council will cease providing in-home care. Under the new system, residents will register with the My Aged Care website, be assessed as to what services they may need and given a choice of service providers. Deputy mayor Walter Villagonzalo said that post-2020, the council would “need to consider a transition plan for our community and Wyndham city staff”.

“The exact timing of this transition is not yet known, but council is committed to keeping residents, clients and their carers informed throughout this journey,” he said. City life director Jenny McMahon added: “We’re supporting our staff to consider what they might want to do in the future, where they might want to go. “Clearly, there’ll be lots of jobs in the sector, I have no doubt about that. There’s many more agencies starting to provide services in Wyndham than what there were before.” Wyndham council community support manager Melinda Chapman said the changes could affect about 100 full-time, part-time and casual staff, some of whom were already working with other providers. The council also voted last week to not register as a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) service provider for the foreseeable future. But Ms McMahon said the council might offer disability services in the future if there was demand. “While we’ve decided not to register as a NDIS provider at this point in time, what we’re actually doing is monitoring the sector really closely and watching the development of those services to ensure that the community’s needs are being met,” she said. “If there is a case where there is a gap or an unmet need, then council may go back and reconsider that.”

Commuters hit by parking pain By Charlene Macaulay Nearly 4000 commuters have been stung with parking fines at Tarneit and Williams Landing train stations in the past three years, as station parking demand continues to escalate. Wyndham council last week revealed that 2921 commuters had been fined for parking along the Leakes Road entry to Tarneit station since July 1, 2015, with a further 985 fines slapped on commuters parking in the streets adjacent to Williams Landing station in the same period.
The council does not have jurisdiction to issue parking fines within train station carparks, which are managed by Public Transport Victoria. The figures were released following questions by Tarneit resident Arnav Sati, who called on the council to improve parking conditions at train station carparks. Acting city economy director Peter McKinnon said the council had written to Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan seeking a meeting to discuss the lack of parking and bus services at Tarneit train station.
‘‘
Where are we supposed to park our cars
’’
- Arnav Sati
“Council acknowledges that the existing [carpark at] Tarneit rail station – in fact, all of our rail stations across the municipality – do not meet commuter or community needs,” Mr McKinnon said. “We’ve made budget and advocacy submissions to the state government requesting
funding for additional carparking. So far these multiple requests have not progressed.” Mr Sati said he was surprised at the high number of parking fines issued. “Due to a lack of bus connectivity and limited parking spaces, what options do residents have?” he asked. “Where are we supposed to park our cars? “Wyndham council clearly said that multiple requests have not progressed with state government for additional carparks and bus services for Tarneit. Is that what Tarneit gets being a safe Labor seat?”

Notifying Wyndham council about problems such as dumped rubbish and illegally parked cars is about to become a whole lot easier. Wyndham smart city portfolio holder Aaron An says the council has launched an online app that allows residents to report issues of concern in the municipality. “The Report an Issue application can be used in four easy steps,” Cr An said. “Simply add the location of the issue, add some details, add some photos if you have them, and then add your contact details. “Intended for non-urgent matters like litter, illegal parking and overgrown grass, the application is mobile-friendly and can be used on any Android or Apple device. “It provides a simpler way of getting council to take action when you spot something that needs to be taken care of.” Cr An said the online app meant residents would not have to fill out paper forms or spend time on the phone when reporting issues. “In an age when people can order food and track it all the way to their front door and FaceTime with family and friends on the other side of the world, it only makes sense that you shouldn’t have to go out of your way to get in touch with your local council,” he said. Disturbing rise in sex offending By Alesha Capone The number of sexual offences recorded in Wyndham has grown by more than two thirds in 12 months, reaching 223 crimes last year. In 2016, there were 156 sexual offences recorded by Wyndham police. According to statistics from the Victorian Crime Statistics Agency, the 223 sexual offences included 94 acts of indecent assault, 84 rapes, 16 sexual offences against children, 10 counts of incest and 19 other types of offences.
There were 216 victims, including 106 women and 11 men, and three cases where the victim’s gender is unknown to police. Ninety-three of the victims were aged 17 or below, including 79 girls and 14 boys. In 2017, 59 sexual crimes occurred in Werribee, 42 in Hoppers Crossing, 35 in Tarneit, 32 in Point Cook, 21 in Truganina, 15 in Wyndham Vale and 19 in Wyndham’s other suburbs. Wyndham police Inspector Marty Allison said the number of offences reported to Victoria Police had increased by 45 per cent
during the past five years, with more than 14,500 sexual offences reported in 2017 – about 40 incidents a day. “We attribute a large portion of the increase in reports to improved confidence in the community to come forward ‌ and know they will be believed,â€? Inspector Allison said. “However, we believe reports of sexual offences remain significantly under-reported.â€? Inspector Allison said it was “never too lateâ€? to report a sexual offence and that police would encourage victims to come forward regardless of when or where they were assaulted.
“Our message to victims is that Victoria Police supports you, if you come forward we have specially trained investigators who will listen to you – even if you do not want to proceed with an investigation there are important reasons for reporting a sexual offence, as the information you provide us may help us enhance your safety or the safety of others, he said. Victims can report to their local police station or find the nearest Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team online at www.police.vic.gov.au.

Platypus death sparks warning
RiverEdge external facade. (Burbank Group)
Rebirth on river’s edge By Charlene Macaulay A 10-storey building overlooking Wyndham Park and the Werribee River is the latest high-rise development to get Wyndham council’s stamp of approval. The $47 million project, dubbed RiverEdge, will be delivered in a public-private partnership between Wyndham council and the Burbank Group. It includes 100 one, two and three bedroom apartments, two ground floor retail tenancies, 80 residential carparking spaces and a residents’ rooftop area along Comben Drive. Burbank Group managing director Jarrod Sanfilippo said construction of stage one would
begin in mid-2019, with completion scheduled for late 2020. “Stage one is the first step in our broader Riverbend precinct plan which aims to enhance Werribee’s city centre,” he said. “The area is benefiting from significant infrastructure investment including road upgrades, as well as the redevelopment of Wyndham Park and the Riverbank Promenade master plan, and we’re excited to be part of this revitalisation.” Stage two plans are in development and will include a new 8300 square metre Wyndham city community learning hub over five levels and another 200-plus apartments. The site – which is presently a 59-space
carpark – is one of four carparks owned by Wyndham council that will be converted to high-rise complexes in coming years in a bid to rejuvenate the heart of Werribee. The council received six objections to the planned development, with concerns raised about carparking and access to properties from the rear laneway. Councillor Henry Barlow said the project aimed to get more people living in Werribee’s CBD to create a thriving hub. “For a city that’s now got over a quarter of a million people living in it, I think it’s important that we do have a central business district – the capital of our municipality, Werribee – be part of the 21st century.”
Werribee Riverkeeper John Forrester has appealed to dog walkers to keep their animals under control following the discovery of a dead platypus. Mr Forrester, whose position means that he acts as spokesperson for the Werribee River Association, said a resident found the dead platypus near Manorvale Parade last month. “To my horror, I instantly recognised it was a platypus, a young male, about a foot long,” Mr Forrester said. “It was really sad to see it.” He said that an expert from the platypusSPOT website found that the platypus had broken ribs, which meant it had most likely been attacked by a dog. Mr Forrester said he did not want to criticise dog walkers or people who let their dogs off the leash while walking near Werribee River. But he said it was important for pet owners to keep their animals under control at all times in case they saw a platypus and tried to pick it up. He said that in 1998, the river association microchipped 16 platypuses in the river between Purchase Street and the Maltby Bypass. He said that since then, droughts and poor water flow had led to a drop in platypus numbers. Mr Forrester also asked people to refrain from dropping rubbish near the river. Alesha Capone

his week’s column is brought to you by the letter R. Many believe local government should concentrate on the 3 Rs and leave the rest to those above them in the political totem pole, but for a variety of reasons those days are long gone. The three Rs in question are roads, rubbish and rates, the traditional domain of councils and rightly so, though the roads get murky when local roads become state roads and the funding and maintenance is the higher authority’s responsibility. That letter R (responsibility) gets thrown around a lot in government circles but is usually preceded with the words ‘not our’ or ‘that’s their’. Roads are still a major issue and big bucks are involved, with $37.1 million budgeted for in the next year by council, who are quick to alert everyone to the difference between the roads the state pays for and the ones they do. Here’s a new R to cover that – rats. As in, We the Ratepayers (the most important R) don’t give a rat’s who claims to pay for it because we do anyway. Just get it done. I am pleased to see rubbish is still high on
the agenda, actually most things to do with rubbish are high. The hill ours sits on in Werribee is very high, as is the pungent odour, if the wind is high to very high. The cost of travelling overseas to see what to do with our rubbish is also very high, as is the number of people it takes to visit these overseas places on fact-finding missions. The level of interest and action after these trips is generally not as high as the UV reading in the European cities these events are held in. I personally can’t wait for the report on the three week visit which can then be recycled so the circle of rubbish can roll on. Another R that is rearing its head more often is rorts. This has been more prevalent at state level, where those not implicated are saying it is not because they did not want to be, it’s just that they weren’t asked. Really? If that is how you really feel, here are another two R words resign or retire, or as we like to say in the west – rack off. Here is a Reality Report for all those in any elected office – get off your Rs and work for the people who voted you in. ■

Celebrities tee off for Matty By Esther Lauaki A freak accident in the first game of the 2015 rugby season changed Maciu Vosa’s life forever. Matty, as he is affectionately known, broke his neck when he was crushed under the weight of his teammates and opponents, leaving him a C4 quadriplegic. The father of two has no feeling from his upper chest down, but has some limited movement in his arms. His around-the-clock care is administered by his wife, Kylie, and two carers.

A support group, which includes Matty’s teammates from Box Hill Rugby Union Club, has been raising money to support the Vosa family since the accident. Its Eynesbury celebrity golf day, now in its second year, will be held on Friday, May 18, to raise money for renovations to make the family’s Hoppers Crossing home more wheelchair-friendly. This year’s guests will include rugby personalities George Gregan, Rod Kafer and Sean Maloney. Money raised by the golf day will bridge the gap of $150,000 needed for renovations to allow Matty to manoeuvre around the house. Mrs Vosa said Matty and the entire family were overwhelmed by the support. “We’re so appreciative of all the support since the very beginning,” she told Star Weekly. “We have received a lot of support and love from the club and the whole rugby family.

Smaller bins a waste war tactic By Charlene Macaulay New homes will receive smaller household waste bins as part of a Wyndham council plan to progressively standardise bin sizes across the city. The council will also replace damaged 140-litre capacity residential waste wheelie bins with 120-litre bins in line with the council’s waste and litter strategy, which is aimed at diverting 90 per cent of the city’s waste from landfill.
Under the strategy, all residential waste wheelie bins will be reduced to 120 litres in the future, reducing waste collection by 1.4 million tonnes of waste across the city every year, while recycling bins will increase in size from 240 litres to 360 litres. It remains unclear when the full roll-out will occur. From July 1, the council will also reduce the number of yearly tip tokens from two to one and will add a third hard waste collection. Other measures being considered include:
• Cutting the cost of mattress disposal at the transfer station; • Running more pop-up recycling days; • Offering a discounted price for separated green waste; and • Adding additional recycling collections in the Christmas period. Councillor Henry Barlow said Wyndham had to find an alternative way to dispose of and treat waste to reach its 90 per cent diversion target.
He said the state government appeared to be “very keen about looking at turning waste into energy. “If we’re able to look at a way of doing that, not only does it mean that we could eliminate 90 per cent of airspace for rubbish by turning it into ash, we can then turn that waste into electricity that can be pumped back into the grid, he said. “We can actually make money, which will go towards helping to provide facilities and infrastructure and services.
Tip tenders awarded Wyndham council has awarded tenders for the construction of, and materials to build, Werribee tip’s next cell – despite its construction still being before the courts. The council last week awarded contracts totalling more than $11.4 million to construct cell five at the Wests Road refuse disposal facility and for the purchase of geomembrane and geosynthetic materials for the cell’s construction. The council will head to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal for a five-day hearing starting on May 21 to contest a Western Region Environment Centre appeal of the Environment Protection Authority’s decision to approve an expansion of Werribee tip. The expansion would allow the council to build four cells, over 25 years, that can reach up to 29 metres above natural ground level – the height limit enforced on the tip’s existing cells. Councillor Mia Shaw said awarding the tenders would ensure that construction on cell five could quickly begin once the matter is
resolved. Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe has previously told Star Weekly that the tip would “run out of space in November this year due to the legal battle. From then until March or April next year, the earliest the new cell could be in operation, council would be unable to accept waste, aside from regular Wyndham kerbside collections. Harry van Moorst from Western Region Environment Centre said he was unfazed. “We have no problem with that, so long as they realise that they should be keeping [waste] in the ground, and should be going for a cell-by-cell works approval, not a 25-year approval, he said. “They’re our two major demands. Charlene Macaulay Werribee tip’s new cell is the subject of a VCAT challenge. Dim view of reserve’s lights By Charlene Macaulay
Roll up for a good cause
(Damjan Janevski)
An under-18 girls football team is training in darkness because lights have yet to be installed at their home ground, seven years after opening to the public. Parents have resorted to parking their cars along the boundary line and switching their headlights on when the Point Cook Football Club’s under-18s team trains on Tuesday and Thursday night at Saltwater Reserve oval one, so the girls aren’t training in total darkness. One parent, who wished not to be named, said the team of 28 girls had started training slightly earlier to get in as much daylight as possible. Once dark, the team relies on car headlights or moves to the precinct’s synthetic ground, which is not appropriate for tackling and other footy drills. The $26 million Saltwater Reserve was opened in 2011, with oval one the only oval yet to have lights installed. Wyndham council city life director Jenny McMahon said the oval was one of five sporting fields across the city that would receive LED lighting by the middle of the year. “In the meantime, the Point Cook Football Club has been allocated two other ovals at Saltwater Reserve, both of which have lighting,” she said. Another parent, who also wanted to remain anonymous, said they were flummoxed as to why the lights were being installed in the middle of the year. “The infrastructure for the lights has been there, from what I understand, since the ground was implemented. “They’ve got three ovals, and their number one oval, which has all the equipment – the scoreboards and everything facing it – doesn’t have lights. It doesn’t make any sense.”
PUPILS ZOE, FAITH AND NATE
Pupils at Woodville Primary School enjoyed a wheely important fundraising event on Thursday. The Hoppers Crossing school hosted a Wheel-a-Thon to help raise funds to buy sporting equipment. Pupils brought a range of wheel-based items to school for the fundraiser, including bikes, skateboards, scooters, prams and pull-along toys. Designated paths were set out around the school for the Wheel-a-Thon, which began with a parade to showcase the pupils’ ‘wheels’. Teachers, pupils and parent volunteers helped to run the event, which culminated in prizes being awarded to the most decorated set of wheels.

Club returns fire
The Red Knights Australia 10 are a local chapter of an International Motorcycle Club comprised of firefighters and their families. I am writing to you to voice our sincere disappointment and disgust of the article written in the Star Weekly (Anzac motorcycle anger, May 2) I am one of the co-organisers for this event each year in conjunction with the Werribee RSL parade commander, Werribee RSL and Wyndham council. I was approached a few years ago by the RSL parade commander to facilitate this co-ordination of all bike clubs, bikers and families, as we were aware that many different bikers went to the Anzac Day dawn service. This year we have had eight different motorcycle clubs (about 125 riders) attend from across Victoria to pay their respects; and to create a significance for the community – to emulate the noises of war and the final three cannon blasts before silence falls to commence the dawn service. It has been arranged that the bikes assemble in the rear of Coles carpark staging area, then en masse at 0615 we enter Watton Street and proceed to the organised bike parking area cordoned off in front of the Park Hotel and across the road if necessary. All bikes keep their engines running until the last one has parked, I then give the signal at 0620 for three full blasts of the accelerators to simulate the noise of an artillery barrage then ALL engines are turned off – silence falls. At 0625 the flag party march out to the cenotaph for the service commencement. I have had many people congratulate us
Star Weekly Weekly,, May 2
for our attendance to this event over the past years and recognition of the use of the motorcycles, it has to my knowledge always been very well accepted. As for the retired Army Officer, we would like to pass on our regret that this had upset him on the day and truly wish he now understands our commitment to the ceremony and our deepest respects for all current, retired and fallen service personnel. Kind regards, Gerard “Wombat” Green President Red Knights Motorcycle Club Inc | Australia 10 | Wyndham Chapter HAV A E YOUR SAY AV Star Weekly welcomes letters to the editor as well as comments and story tips on our websites and Facebook pages. Speed cameras rake in the cash By Alesha Capone Three speed camera sites in Wyndham have been named among the 10 most profitable in the state, within a three-month time frame. Statistics released on the state government’s Cameras Save Lives website show the top-50 cameras in Victoria for speeding, red light and unregistered vehicle offences between July and September last year. The Geelong-bound Princes Freeway cameras in Point Cook, under the Forsyth Road Bridge, were responsible for 4311 fines
totalling $997,603 during the period – making the cameras the fourth-highest earning in the state. In comparison, the cameras issued 3924 fines totalling $892,520 between July and September 2016. The eighth-highest earning cameras in the state for July to September 2017 were those covering three Melbourne-bound lanes on the Princes Freeway in Little River, at the Point Wilson Road Bridge. The cameras were responsible for 2379 fines totalling $579,451 down from 3142 fines totalling $753,958 between July and September in 2016.
The ninth most-profitable camera site in the state was the north-bound camera covering lane three of the Western Ring Road in Laverton North (Boundary Road south side gantry), which was responsible for 2369 fines totalling $550,416. Cameras at the same site were responsible for 3195 fines totalling $895,390 between July and September in 2016. The highest earning camera location in Victoria for July to September 2017, which earned more $2.12 million in fines, covers three lanes at the intersection of Fitzroy Street and Lakeside Drive, St Kilda.
A Department of Justice and Regulation spokeswoman said speeding contributed to about 30 per cent of deaths on Victoria’s roads each year. “While most motorists do the right thing on our roads, it’s disappointing to see so many people ignoring the road safety message and putting their own lives and those of their fellow motorists at risk,” she said. “All revenue from camera fines go into the Better Roads Victoria Trust Account, with the funds used to improve road safety and the efficiency of Victoria’s roads.”
Scout house goes up The 1st Point Cook Scout Group is getting closer to moving into its new headquarters, with a community grant helping it along the way. Construction has started on the $1.6 million multi-purpose centre at Carranballac P-9 College’s Boardwalk Campus. Once complete, it will be used as a Scout facility on nights and weekends, as a classroom and activity space during school hours, and for before and after school care. The project is being jointly funded by the Scout group and the state government. Group leader Mark Coates said a recent $10,000 grant from Point Cook’s The Brook would go towards the internal fit-out of the new hall, including white goods and furniture. Mr Coates said the group had long outgrown its current headquarters at the Jamieson Way Community Centre, with 146 kids on the books.
“Our group’s grown so dramatically … the demand is just too high for what we can offer out of that community hall,” he said. “Moving into our own new dedicated hall means that we can expand the program further and bring kids in and run more activities. It’s really going to open up so much more opportunities for these kids.” Mr Coates said the new facility would be named after the Scout group’s former group leader Brian Geary, who passed away last year. The Point Cook Scout Group was one of a number of Wyndham sports clubs, community centres, schools and festivals to share in grants totalling $45,000 from The Brook. Kirsty Baxter from The Brook said it was important for the organisation to give back to the community. Charlene Macaulay

Special thanks to nurses By Alesha Capone Mercy Health will celebrate the important work carried out by its nurses and midwives this week as part of International Nurses Day. The day is held around the world on May 12 each year, while International Day of the Midwife falls on May 5. On May 11, Werribee Mercy Hospital will host an afternoon tea to thank nurses and midwives for their hard work and dedication to the community’s health. The hospital employs 820 nurses and midwives, while Mercy Mental Health employs 295 nurses. Mercy Mental Health nurse Sharon Redfern received a Mental Health Nursing Excellence award from the hospital last year. Ms Redfern said that she had worked as a mental health nurse for nearly 29 years, including almost 10 years at Mercy Health. “I started working as a nurse in the inpatient psychiatric clinic at Werribee Mercy Hospital before moving to the community mental health team as a case manager, she said. “In November, 2017, I moved to a new role, making sure patients have the right supports in place when they leave hospital. Ms Redfern said her favourite part of the job was receiving positive feedback from the families of patients, problem-solving and sharing her knowledge with graduate nurses. Mercy Health nursing and midwifery executive director Adjunct Professor Sharon Donovan said the work of nurses and midwives was incredibly important. “They look after people on some of the best and worst days of their lives, Adjunct Professor Donovan said. “It takes a special person to choose nursing or midwifery as a career.

Sun sets on Tarneit land sales By Charlene Macaulay Dozens of families have been left in the lurch after a developer revoked sale contracts for land in a new Tarneit estate. It is believed up to 100 purchasers have been affected by developer Grassylands Pty Ltd’s decision to trigger sunset clause provisions for the first three stages of land sold at Emerald Park estate, leaving affected purchasers significantly worse off due to increased land values. One Tarneit resident, who wished to remain
anonymous, said he purchased land in Emerald Park in January, 2017, for $200,000. He said the date for the title release was originally slated for September 2017, but it kept being delayed until the sunset clause was enacted and his deposit was refunded in February this year. “If you go to other estates close by, they’re worth over $400,000 for land the same size,” he said. A Grassylands spokesman said it had invoked the sunset clause because it had been unable to have subdivision plans registered with the land titles office by the required date.
Dance group steps it up A new dance class in Hoppers Crossing is giving people with Down syndrome the perfect chance to get down and boogie. e.motion21 is an Australian first innovative dance and fitness program for children and adults with Down syndrome that improves overall health and self-esteem of those who take part and also aims to change perceptions of Down syndrome within society. Teacher Eloise Harris, who oversees classes at Central Park Community Centre, said the classes were run by specialist teachers and were tailored to individual needs and include props such as pom poms, ribbons and bounce balls. “It’s the same as any other dance class,” she said. Classes are held on Thursday nights and include a warm-up, dance techniques and routines, which will be performed in a concert. The Hoppers Crossing class is one of nine e.motion21 programs run across the state.
16 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 9, 2018
Elizabeth Sfetkidis, who has been taking 10-year-old Marina to the classes, said she had enrolled her daughter in a mainstream dance class, but it didn’t work out. The Werribee mum said she was disappointed by the lack of after-school activities available to children with Down syndrome. “I’ve been waiting for something like this for a long time. “[Marina] just loves it, she’s excited to attend. Dancing is something she does a lot at home.” e.motion21 is a NDIS approved service provider. (Damjan Janevski)
In a letter sent to residents in February, Grassylands advised purchasers that it was still waiting on approvals from several government authorities and on the construction of a trunk sewer main and water mains. Last week, Wyndham council called on the Consumer Affairs Minister to investigate the correspondence issued by Grassylands in relation to the reasons behind the delayed start of the Emerald Park development. The council also agreed to write to the state government and request that it adopt New South Wales-style laws to provide greater
protection for consumers in relation to the use of sunset clauses. The council will contact both Grassylands and Emerald Park purchasers to clarify the council’s role in the process. Councillor Josh Gilligan said purchasers now faced the dilemma of re-entering a contract at Emerald Park or finding land elswhere “in a much more expensive property market”. “And of course on the flip side, the developer who still owns the land can go ahead with the development and re-sell that land at today’s market value,” he said.

The fuss about Felines! Urinary problems are a common issue with cats, in particular a condition known as Feline Urinary Syndrome (FUS). Signs of FUS include straining to urinate, blood in the urine and going in strange places such as the shower or bath. Despite many studies, no exact cause for FUS has been discovered, however risk factors include obesity, lower quality diets, and stress. In many cases mineral crystals form in the urine irritating the bladder and its outflow tract, the urethra. In male cats particularly, these crystals can totally block urine flow, leading to depression, anorexia and even death. Urgent veterinary attention is needed especially in males who may require hospitalisation to relieve the obstruction. Treatment also includes feeding a preventative diet available from your vet clinic, lowering stress and weight loss in overweight cats. Your vet may also suggest increasing the number of water bowls and clean litter trays in your home. Regular urine tests can be performed by your vet to ensure the FUS problem stays under control.

couple of years ago, deciding it was time to compete in a “more comfortable” vehicle when his hip started giving him trouble. He will race in the regularity competition at the Historic Winton, where he will nominate a time that his Cooper will take to race the circuit and try to meet that time. The driver closest to his or her nominated time is the winner. “It’s not designed [just] as a race; it’s designed as a parade for spectators,” he said. “Having the regularity competition allows
you to get into motor racing and meet the guys.” Mr Tidbury started his racing career in 1982 in the UK, then moved to the US and finally Australia through his job as an engineer with GM motors. Now that he’s retired, he’s rented out a little factory in Hoppers Crossing with a few other men, where he spends his time buying and fixing up vintage cars and motorbikes. It’s an expensive hobby, but “what else are you meant to do with your money?” he asks.

Parking restriction fight fails By Alesha Capone Parking restrictions will be imposed in two residential streets near the Wyndham Civic Centre, despite a petition opposing the idea. In November last year, Star Weekly reported that residents of Princes Court and Queens Court in Werribee had been angered by council workers’ parked cars blocking driveways and entry ways to the streets. At the time, the council delivered letters to residents notifying them that due to the civic centre’s carpark reaching capacity, demand
for parking in nearby streets had increased. To counter this, the council proposed introducing parking restrictions in both courts. Karen Ryan, who regularly visits her elderly aunt in Princes Court, started a petition to stop parking restrictions being introduced. Ms Ryan said while residents did not mind council workers parking in the streets, they did object to the entry ways being blocked, in case emergency service vehicles needed access. At last week’s council meeting, the council responded to the petition, which had 39 signatures.
The council voted to introduce a staged approach to parking restrictions in Princes Court and Queens Court, with stage one to involve two-hour parking from 9am to 3pm on weekdays, on the east side of each court. Stage two will involve the addition of “No standing 9am to 3pm Mon to Fri” parking restrictions on the west side of each court. In addition, the existing “No Standing 11am to 5pm Mon to Fri” parking signs along the Princes Highway Service Road will be replaced with “2 Hour Parking 9am to 3pm Mon to Fri” signs.
The council will conduct a review of the restrictions, including input from residents, within three months of each installation. Ms Ryan said most residents of Princes Court and Queens Court felt they would be “no better off” with the parking restrictions. She said the council was “Band-aiding” the issue and that its employees would start parking in other residential streets. “My argument is that the municipality is growing and will have more employees, so they need do so something about the [civic centre’s] carpark,” she said.
A festival for all ages Music, dancing and self-defence classes are just some of the activities that will star in Wyndham’s annual Youth Festival this Friday. The festival will be part of a family-friendly open night at the Manor Lakes Community Learning Centre (formerly the Wyndham Vale Community Learning Centre) to celebrate the completion of construction at the facility. Wyndham family friendly city portfolio holder Mia Shaw said the upgrades at the centre were part of a $9.9 million investment, including $1.93 million from the state government, in the Manor Lakes, Point Cook and Tarneit Community Learning Centres. Cr Shaw said the Friday event would include craft activities for children, face-painting, henna, workshops and demonstrations from dance schools, self-defence classes and storytime sessions for kids and adults. “Come down after school and after work to enjoy the free entertainment, grab dinner
and enjoy a relaxed Friday night in your neighbourhood,” Cr Shaw said. “There’ll also be amusement rides including the cha cha, dunk tank drop slide and jumping castle, a selfie station, a live music stage and delicious food available to purchase from food trucks and Saffron Kitchen.” She said a new service would be launched at the centre that would give residents the chance to meet staff from the council’s town planning, building approvals and economic development teams every Tuesday from 8am to noon. The Youth Festival and open night will be a drug, alcohol and smoke-free event. It will be held on Friday from 3-8pm at the Manor Lakes Community Learning Centre, 86 Manor Lakes Boulevard, Manor Lakes. Details: wyndham.vic.gov.au Alesha Capone

Incinerator-type sanitary conveniences, once referred to by the late Cr. Peter Jackson as “thunderboxes” have fallen into disfavor with Werribee Shire Council because of odor problems. In addition there were four cases of units having caught fire or at least overheated.
Hoppers Crossing is likely to get improved medical facilities following the Werribee Council’s decision to grant a permit to a Werribee property developer to build a day hospital in Derrimut Rd, Hoppers Crossing. The council has placed 20 conditions on a planning permit for developer Mr John Flynn, of Wedge St, Werribee.
Suburbs in the west vowed to help end toxic dumps in a stunning show of force at the Werribee Racecourse on Monday night. Between 15,000 and 20,000 residents braved the bitter cold to force home their message that toxic dumps were obsolete and not welcome in Victoria.
Authorities believe local shopping areas could be a common link between three cases of legionnaire’s disease in Wyndham being investigated by the Department of Health Services. Victoria’s chief health officer John Carnie said on Monday that two Werribee men, aged 30 and 45, and a 48-year-pld woman of Point Cook had received hospital treatment.

NEWS
MY WYNDHAM Phebe Yeo has lived in Point Cook for 10 years. She volunteers with the Point Cook Cultural Community group and has a business called 8Senses, which runs cultural activities. She chats with Alesha Capone. What do you like about being involved with the Point Cook Cultural Community? Through the Point Cook Cultural Community, I’ve gotten to know other communities, not just Asian ones, I’ve got to know people who are so committed to the community. I also completed the Building Blocks Community Leadership Program, which is supported by Wyndham council and Victoria University. For that, me and two other ladies did a project which reached out to senior citizens.
I started 8Senses because I love to do community work. My community work blossomed when friends invited me to join the Point Cook Cultural Community. I am a bilingual worker, I deal a lot with young kids and I love to tell stories, I realised people enjoy my stories and I do make them laugh. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, but never had the chance. I give children an opportunity to come and learn and to teach others, they enjoy it. When I teach and I see that children want to teach others, I am very, very happy. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without my family, especially my sister. She is a ceramic pottery artist and she sends cultural things across to me. She sponsored two of her friends to come here to help me, who helped me to learn different things. They gave the confidence to do lantern-making workshops. We learned how to make traditional red packet lanterns, called hong pows, together.
(Damjan Janevski)
What inspired you to start 8Senses?
What do you like about Point Cook? The people. I have made more friends in my 10 years living here than 38 years in Singapore. We are so open about getting to know each other
here. Most of us don’t have extended families here. At Indian festivals there are not just Indian friends, but people from all cultures. My husband is a car salesman. He says to people: ‘If you buy a car, my wife will cook you Hainanese
chicken rice.’ We have made many friends this way. Also, when we miss local foods, we have people who say, ‘We cook for you, come over’. I can easily say there are 200 families I know who live in Wyndham.

Audiologist Marina Opacak, from Active Audiology in Altona, says a hearing aid can mean the brain spends less energy on having to struggle with hearing conversation, thus boosting social interaction.
“Most modern hearing devices these days are smaller than a five-cent coin,” she says.
She says hearing aids can lessen the burden on the brain, helping stave off cognitive decline and leaving aid users less tired.

Devices once associated with “getting old” may slow the ageing process.
Recent studies suggest that the greater the untreated hearing loss, the greater the risk of dementia. “If you have two people with a hearing loss, both will experience a degree of mental decline with the ageing process,” Marina says. “However, the person who hears better (because they’re wearing hearing aids) experiences a lower level of brain deterioration.” Despite study findings on the benefits of hearing aids, many people still delay a decision on
“However, finding a device that you like the look of is only the beginning. “Successful hearing outcomes occur with proper programming by trained audiologists. “Our clinicians spend most of their appointments fine-tuning devices to target specific hearing problems that our patients experience daily.” To make the process less daunting, Active Audiology offers no-obligation 14-day trials of the latest technology in hearing devices. Patients can take devices home and experience the difference in their normal listening environments. Active Audiology, 10 Harrington Square, Altona. Opens 9am-5pm weekdays. Inquiries: 9398 3331

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir has a butcher’s hook at a Yarraville favourite Yarraville is a big suburb. For several reasons, much focus falls on the maze-like collection of streets in and around Anderson and Ballarat. But Yarraville stretches a long way towards Geelong – well, to Cemetery Road anyway. And certainly to Roberts Road, where Butcher 128 is located. Perhaps its far-flung location is why it’s been off our radar for so long. Even now, it’s pure happenstance that takes Bennie and I there for a quick Sunday meal. Much of the previous tenant’s infrastructure has been kept in place – hence the name – and combined with contemporary cafe gear. There’s a beaut covered outdoor area and play space down the back. It’s busy in the brunch/lunch peak hour, but the staff are smiling and efficient. One side of the menu is mostly dedicated to breakfast fare; we mine the other for terrific sandwiches. Bennie’s The Meat Hook ($15.50) is superb. Right from the first bite, he’s nodding in enthusiastic acclamation of its braised pork belly, barbecue, Sriracha mayo and cabbage/ herb slaw. My The Baron ($14) is just as good. The house-made salted beef, tender and thinly sliced, is about an inch thick. It’s joined by cabbage slaw, Swiss cheese, pickle and house mustard sauce. The bread is just the right kind of light, perfectly toasted, to house it all.
BUTCHER 128 Address: 128 Roberts Street, Yarraville Phone: 9318 0975 There surely can be no better argument for positing “mere” sandwiches as bona fide meals than our 10/10 pair. So impressed by the sandwich department, I return a few days later for a bowl dish from the breakfast side of things. XO crab ($18) has egg noodles, a fried egg, crispy shallots, house XO sauce and a soft shell crab. It’s a modest serve and a light meal. And it’s very dry, though the sauce flavour is happily present. Best of all is the soft shell crab – easily the best I have had. Well, in Melbourne anyway. It’s crisp and sweet, and thus a far cry from the drab specimens that have helped make us un-enamoured of this particular specialty. Our coffees, over both visits, are crazy good.

EXPO Celebrating 20 Years! It is my great pleasure to celebrate with you the 20th anniversary of the WRICA Careers Expo. From humble beginnings in the fledgling Werribee Campus of Victoria University 20 years ago, we have built the WRICA Careers Expo to be the largest independently organised careers expo in the State. As a careers association, we are proud of our ongoing efforts to provide relevant career development material to the young people in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay. This year the Expo will be held on Thursday 17th & Friday 18th May at the Werribee Racing Centre. GOLD SPONSORS

With the establishment of the East Werribee National Employment & Innovation Precinct, there are exiting times ahead for young people in Melbourne’s South West – and the role of disseminating current careers information that is being constantly updated is now more important than ever before. It is through our regular monthly meetings with our tertiary and vocational partners that career practitioners are able to glean this information and determine the most effective ways to impart this to their respective school communities. Once again, I would like to take the time to pay tribute to the hard work of our school based career practitioners – all of whom are dedicated in preparing their students for pathways into careers that will be both rewarding and satisfying in a range of occupations and/or further educational options. Our Careers Expo is a crucial component of the work that we, as an organisation, do in allowing students at all secondary schools in Hobsons Bay and Wyndham access to information first hand from approximately 50 Tertiary and Vocational Exhibitors in the one setting. We would like to thank all of our sponsors, and in particular our Gold Sponsors: Deakin University, Victoria University, The Gordon Institute and Deakin College. Without the support of tertiary and vocational institutions along with local businesses we would not be able to deliver an event such as the WRICA Careers Expo.

WRICA Careers Expo reers Practitioner Perspective GOLD SPONSORS

SILVER SPONSORS
The society in which we live is changing rapidly and the world of work is no different. But there are some things that are so valuable to our community that they endure. The Wyndham/Hobsons Bay Regional Careers Association Expo is one event that continues to serve our community as it has for the last 20 years. Started in 1998, it is the largest careers expo in the west and the third largest in Victoria. It is truly a testament to the event that the WRICA Careers Expo is on again this May. GOLD SPONSORS
This Careers Expo has provided a valuable opportunity for educational and employment providers to inform the community of the courses and pathways that are on offer to school students and the public. This is extremely important as the vocational landscape has altered radically over this time. It is estimated that today’s school graduates will have 17 different jobs across five separate careers. Therefore, a career choice is not a once off decision we make in Year 10. It is a complex series of choices across the lifespan and is an ever evolving prospect. That being said, it is still important to make informed choices at this critical stage of a young persons’ development while they are considering the next step post school. Jenny Devereux from Werribee Secondary reflected that “The WRICA Careers Expo is a key event in the calendar at our school. Students in Year 10 attend at a crucial time in their education, as the event allows them to consider and often decide on their career goals, subjects and courses for senior schooling.” SILVER SPONSORS
BRONZE SPONSORS
At its inception, the WRICA Careers Expo was designed to provide a quality service for secondary schools, and there are a large number of schools that attend annually with their students. The Careers Coordinator at Good News Lutheran, Ms. Celeste Cameron, talking with her students remarked that her students are “already approaching me to confirm we would be attending (WRICA) again, proving the Expo provides an accessible and student focused venue where students
BRONZE SPONSORS
can begin independently planning for their future beyond school.” We, at Heathdale Christian College, have taken our students since its inception and find the opportunity for our students to meet and talk to informed professionals regarding their careers invaluable in helping our students set goals and focus on their studies.
WRICA remains true to its original intention in developing a community that is confident, resilient and involved in their career journey. They Inform individuals in Melbourne’s West with the best information about careers, courses and further training. They engage those in education and industry and provide a place for them to meet the adults of the future. Lastly, they communicate through providing a forum that leads to people taking up opportunities to grow and develop their careers. Mrs Kathy Karlovic from Wyndham Central College commented that “It is a unique setting where our students have the opportunity to discuss pathway options with an extensive group of providers. Our Year 10, 11 & 12 Wyndham Central students appreciate this wonderful opportunity provided for them.” That cannot be underestimated. As the WRICA Careers Expo enters its twentieth incarnation, it has grown and changed to meet the demands of its clientele. However, its core values and purpose remain unchanged. So come down the Werribee Racing Centre and say hello because there are lots of people want to help you continue your own career journey. It is a challenging time to be a young or not so young person in the world of work. But it is also an exciting one filled with a range of options and opportunities. Come and find out more so that you can make that next informed step. Travis Ramsay Careers Practitioner at Heathdale Christian College

What an experience Williamstown High School WRICA Experience
GOLD SPONSORS
Williamstown High School have been attending the WRICA EXPO for many years. Since 2015, in the role as Pathways & Transition Leader, I have been taking our whole Year 12 cohort to the WRICA Expo. This has been received tremendously well by our 200 students SILVER SPONSORSplanning as it is an EXPO that they attend to inform and perhaps finalise their pathway asking those final questions required prior to making their VTAC applications. Our Year 12 students always come away from the expo with a positive experience because the exhibitors at WRICA Expo are key representatives from various institutions and organisations who are knowledgeable and ready to answer any questions that students may have based on their prior pathway research. Attending the WRICA Expo provides students with a very efficient event that students can visit with their peers and collectively gain insights into courses and professions to inform their research. Students also enjoy receiving show bags and course guides! It is always a “must do” event on the Williamstown High School calendar. GOLD SPONSORS

Thomas Carr College WRICA Experience
Over 200 Year 10 students from the College attends the WRICA Careers Expo each year and for many of them, this is their first expo experience and the first opportunity to talk with tertiary course providers, employment agencies and job providers. The student feedback surveys over the years echo positive feedback from students about their expo experience. Our students have informed us that their WRICA Careers Expo experience allows them to make decisions about their subject selections, extend their knowledge about tertiary providers, pathways and support them with future study planning. Furthermore, the students indicate that they enjoy the freedom to roam around at the expo, enjoy the giveaways and lollies. This awareness raising and information gathering opportunity under one roof is a valuable experience. Sam De Silva Careers & Pathways Team Leader
Point Cook Senior Secondary College WRICA Experience: The WRICA Career Expo is an integral part of our Year 10 careers program. Over the past 10 Years Point Cook Senior Secondary College have had over 300 students attend this careers expo each year. It is an excellent activity for our students, as they have an opportunity to speak with many University and TAFE providers and take away information and resources. This expo vastly assists our students subject selection/course counselling process. Mary Dimech Careers and Pathways Leading Teacher & Counsellor

WHERE’S THE CHEESE? I’ve noticed quite a trend towards vegan cuisine. Yet while I greatly admire the principles of my vegan friends, there’s one thing I can’t imagine cutting out of my life – cheese. And by that I mean real cheese. In fact, I’d cut meat from my diet before I’d cut cheese.

FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? NC: If you can read, you can cook. I am not too adventurous and prefer traditional recipes – I have confidence in the classics! FB: What is your signature dish? NC: Roast lamb and potatoes. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? NC: As I have a Greek background, multiple courses and sharing plates is what it is all about! Dishes would include homemade yoghurt and eggplant dips and bread, grilled haloumi, sheftalies (Cypriot sausages), grilled octopus, Greek salad, marinated olives, slow-cooked oven-roasted lamb and potatoes. If there’s any room left, loukoumades for dessert – Greek donuts drizzled with hot honey syrup, sprinkled with cinnamon and garnished with chopped walnuts. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? NC: While Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay are entertaining to watch, My Greek Kitchen, hosted by Tonia Buxton, is my favourite. FB: What is your favourite food? NC: I love Italian, Greek and Middle Eastern cuisines, but – in particular – I am a Nutella lover. FB: What is your favourite drink? NC: Fresh coconut water. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? NC: Coming from a big family, I am not used to just five people at a low key dinner, so I would have to sneak in a few extra guests – Madonna, Gary Ablett Snr, Anna Vissi, George Michael, Princess Diana, Tupac, Gianni Versace, Arianna Huffington and Roger Federer. 32 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 9, 2018
Cheese has long been a celebratory part of my life. In my younger days, I fondly remember my flatmates and I enjoying our weekly “Cheeses Of The World” day, for which I would assemble the world’s biggest cheese platter … a rustic-looking, heavy-handed affair boasting as many international cheeses as we could lay our hands on at the local Woolworths deli counter. We’d sit around drinking cask wine and gorging ourselves on Dutch smoked cheddar. On a recent trip to Gippsland, my hubby and I enjoyed a rather more refined and creative ploughman’s platter at Prom Country Cheese. We were treated to the Cheviot, a mature, tangy, semi-hard sheep’s milk cheese with a mild, piquant flavour, and the gold-medal winning Prom Picnic, a mild, semi-hard pecorino cheese that teams beautifully with apple and pear. When assembling your own cheese platter, there are a few things to remember. Don’t crowd the platter. Leave enough room between the cheeses so that guests don’t accidentally stick their hands into the aged cheddar when they’re trying to cut themselves a wedge of brie. Keep it simple – go for one or two really special cheeses, as opposed to half a dozen ordinary ones. You don’t need to go overboard with accompaniments … some dried fruit and nuts or some generous strips of prosciutto will suffice. Go for a few different textures and provide different knives for different cheeses – or they’ll all end up tasting the same!

With a 40-metre frontage, this property has a residence perched to the side of a block of about 4080 square metres – giving the land great subdivision potential, STCA. It’s ideal for a commercial proposition, medical facilities or home business. The well-presented house has three fitted bedrooms plus an open study. The main bedroom, off the lounge room behind the front door, has a walk-in robe and en suite. Separate to the toilet, the main bathroom is fresh and bright. The family-meals space has glossy floor tiles and large windows dressed in rollerblinds. The kitchen has timber-look cabinetry and stainless-steel cooking appliances. Ducted heating and cooling are included. Large covered pergolas each side of the living hub are a boon for entertainers, the backyard is huge and there are two double garages, water tanks and various sheds. Zoning is residential.
Impeccably presented and replete with refined appointments, this residence on about 650 square metres will have no trouble winning hearts. Entry through a leadlight door is to a hallway with floorboards that lead past an open study, a powder room and a walk-in storage closet neighbouring the laundry. The kitchen and family-dining areas are behind a lounge room island wall inset with a Jetmaster fireplace. Plantation shutters all through, matching white walls, add panache. The sleek kitchen has Caesarstone benches, all the mod-cons and German-made Blum soft-close cabinetry. All bedrooms have excellent customised storage, while the huge main also has a swish dual-basin en suite with tub. A large covered deck links with manicured lawns; hedging lines fences. Point Cook Town Centre and Emmanuel and Carranballac colleges are safe walk/bike rides away.

Expected to attract lots of attention for good reason, this residence has plenty of interior pizzazz and outdoor entertainment spaces with all the bells and whistles. Up top, there’s the main bedroom/retreat with walk-in robe and slick en suite. Three downstairs bedrooms share two designer bathrooms. A large, grey-tiled family-dining area (with gas log fire) has stacker doors to a deck with vertical garden, water feature and shelter blinds, and another set to a huge gabled deck with TV, customised barbecue arrangement and pizza oven. The glam kitchen has stone benches, window splashbacks and all mod-cons. Other keynotes are ducted heating, evaporative cooling, a shed, cubbyhouse and sandpit, large carport and large garage. Werribee River, Presidents Park and Manorvale Primary School are a stroll away.
In a tucked-away court, with everything on the doorstep, this house has been revamped with attention to detail and fine workmanship. Entry is to a lounge-dining room. It and the meals zone, wraps around a new kitchen. Commercial-grade floorboards anchor this entire area. The kitchen has matte white vinyl-wrap cabinetry, soft-grey benches, white subway tiles on splashbacks, a 900mm cooker and integrated microwave. Four bedrooms, three with built-in robes and one with floorboards, include the main with a swish, fully tiled en suite with raised bowl-basin. The toilet is separate to the smart main bathroom. Pearl-grey drapes match wall paint all through. The side yard has a sitting area, while the backyard has plenty of room for kids to romp or for personal projects. There’s a garden shed and the block is about 645 square metres.

double doors before culminating in a tri-zone living hub. As well as spacious family and meals spaces, there’s a zone set up for movie viewing, which has mid-grey walls creating moodiness and, because it sits behind the kitchen’s island bar, the family cook can stay tuned with ease while preparing food. Clever thinking … The kitchen is a sleek affair, a wonderful space for cooking and entertaining. It has a long stone-topped island bench, soft-chocolate lower cabinetry and mid-grey
uppers, a butler’s pantry, an electric cooktop, wall oven and dishwasher. Three fitted bedrooms are towards the back, as are the stylish main bathroom and the laundry. The main bedroom has an extra-big walk-in robe and an en suite with dual basins set in stone atop a wood-grain vanity, a large shower and enclosed toilet. Timber-framed double sliding doors open from the living hub to a spacious integrated alfresco area. It’s rimmed with grey concrete pathways giving the side and back yards a neat finish.

The 2016 Werribee Football Club Annual Auction Night
SPORT Devils’ double delight improves ranking Werribee Devils have catapulted back into the top half of the ladder after its best weekend of the Big V basketball women’s division 1 season so far. The Devils won both games on a double header slate to jump from third-last and into sixth on the standings. On Saturday night, Werribee was far too good for the Hawthorn Magic, victorious 80-59 at Eagle Stadium. The Devils backed up a day later to beat Whittlesea Pacers 64-56 on their home court. It extended the Devils winning streak to three games. Import Alyssa Bennett had a major say for the Devils against Hawthorn, posting 19 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Sam Moodie, with 17 points and seven rebounds, and Jessica Slade, with 15 points and eight rebounds, were strong offensively for the Devils, while Daniella Pisano impressed with seven points and nine assists. Werribee kept its momentum going on
its trip to Whittlesea on Sunday. Price was at the forefront for the Devils, posting 25 points and five assists off the bench, including three three-pointers. The Devils will be seeking to keep the streak alive when they host second-placed Casey Cavaliers at Eagle Stadium on Sunday. In the men’s state championship, Werribee Devils had an impressive 105-91 win on the road over Keilor Thunder. Konor Kulas was lethal for the Devils with 42 points to go with 10 rebounds. Deng Chan double doubled with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Mark Berezdecky had a big influence off the bench with 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists. The Devils have moved up to eighth on the ladder ahead of an important double header weekend, which sees them play Hume City Broncos away on Saturday night and Knox Raiders at home on Sunday. football in trouble? Low scoring, high injury tolls, skills of the game on the decline, food too expensive and match-day experiences are being questioned. Is this the same code that boasts increasing participation numbers, television and radio ratings for which media companies are paying millions, record-breaking attendance numbers and more coverage in space and time than in the history of the game? Yes, it is that same code. By the way, the game is called Australian Rules football, not AFL. Is the game in trouble? Yes and no. It is in great danger of disappearing into its own analytical chasm (if you get my drift) because the journos writing about the game are far outnumbered by journos writing about the game’s controversy of the code. Most of that controversy is manufactured to fill papers and internet sites and ensure those journos have radio and television spots to fill.
■ Respected
football journo Rohan Connolly spoke of this crisis on our new weekly podcast Ruck ’n Roll (available free on mypodcasthouse.com). His view is that there are problems, but they are not insurmountable – and should be addressed over a period of time, not just after one dodgy round of games. Today’s football fan apparently wants more goals, yet some of the most memorable games I have ever been to had low scores. An avalanche of goals is not necessarily the perfect formula for entertainment; it makes a good highlights reel, but not always a good spectacle on the day. The same applies to the speed of the game, especially if the kicking skills are not spot on. Speed can just make for a game in which turning the ball over to the opposition is done with monotonous regularity, something spectators loathe.

Road trip joy for Tigers By Lance Jenkinson With sketchy home form to start the season, Werribee simply had to turn a road game into a victory in Hockey Victoria men’s Vic League 2. The Tigers had to travel more than an hour to do so, but came away with a confidence-boosting 2-0 win over Croydon Ranges at Yarra Valley Grammar on Saturday. Tigers assistant coach Jayden Street said the team was happy with a job well done. “Going into the game 1-2, we really needed to make sure we left there with the points,” he said. “Driving all the way out to Croydon, it was nice to come away with the points.” The Tigers could ill afford to drop this one after losing their opening two home games. “The two losses that we had were both home games and were both 2-1 results,” Street said. “We were in them for the majority of the game … we just had to work on our finishing a little bit and put the score on the board.
“I didn’t think we were playing bad hockey at all – we just needed to capitalise on our opportunities.” Werribee hardly put a foot wrong against Croydon. The Tigers were stingy in defence, keeping a clean sheet, and did what they needed to do to secure the points in attack. It was the work of the defence that won the day. Tigers goalkeeper Aaron Durajski was impenetrable. “Everything that came his way, he kept it out,” Street said. “They had about half a dozen short corners and he managed to keep every single one of them out. “He keeps us in plenty of games. He’s a real key to our defence and sets up everyone in front of him and that’s why we don’t concede a lot of goals.” Captain Sam Huxtable and forward Navi Singh scored for Werribee.
Singh’s goal was the final touch on a spectacular Tigers team play. “The goal he scored was a fantastic team goal – one-touch passes right the way up the field,” Street said. “He was in the right spot and got a nice little tap in goal,” Street said. “Navi’s quite skilful and he knows how to find the way to the back of the net. He’s added another layer to our forward line.” Will it be home sweet home when Werribee returns to President’s Park on Saturday to face St Bede’s? The Tigers are desperate to finally notch their first win in front of their home fans in 2018. “St Bede’s are always up and around us in the league, so we expect it to be another tough game,” Street said. “We haven’t got points at our ground yet, so the boys will be putting the hard yards in on the training track to make sure we rectify that and don’t let teams come to our ground and leave with our points.”

was great to see Matty Boyd back at Avalon Airport Oval last Saturday, even though it was strange to see him in Collingwood colours. The 2016 premiership player is part of the Pies’ coaching staff and is loving his role in the development of young players. Boyd noted the enormous changes at Chirnside Park, where he played 31 games before cementing his spot for nearly 300 AFL games. Non-aligned VFL clubs such as Werribee, Williamstown and Port Melbourne are offering young players golden opportunities that should be acknowledged and encouraged financially by the game itself.

Hoppers Crossing savours that winning feeling Hoppers Crossing sang the team song at the weekend for the first time since being promoted to the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1. It was the Reds’ second win of the campaign, but the first victory back in round one came on a technicality and the result was not awarded until days after the game. But the Reds savoured that winning feeling on this occasion, beating arch rivals Altona City 2-0 in a western derby at Grange Reserve on Saturday. Reds coach Shaun Barbara was thrilled for his side, who had worked so hard for little reward in the opening five weeks. “It’s not as if we’ve been a million miles away and you’re just hoping it’s going to happen,” he said. “We’ve been very close and probably deserved three points in some of the games, but you’ve got to play for 90 minutes and I think we did that today.” Hoppers Crossing fans always take great satisfaction in wins over rivals Altona City. The Reds did not win against City in Barbara’s first season in charge last year, so this was one to savour for him. However, Barbara was just thrilled with
a win that moves the Reds up to sixth on the ladder with eight points from six games. “Last year, unfortunately we lost to them at their home ground and we helped them along considering we scored an own goal,” Barbara recalled. “The second game was a crazy game and we drew. “This was my first personal win over Altona City and over my former coach Andy O’Dell, who coached me as a youngster. “It’s special, it’s good, but the three points to me was more important than the opposition we’re playing.” Hoppers Crossing had the upper hand in the midfield battle. Kevin Smart’s experience was crucial, while Simon Tolli and Kwaku Dade linked up well. Defensively, Hoppers Crossing had all the answers, with captain Brian Chesson particularly targeted by the City strike force. “They targeted ‘Buddha’ [Chesson], being the slightly smaller defender,” Barbara said. “They’d switch the big guy on to him, but he found a massive leap from somewhere, I thought he had a trampoline under him. His leap and his aerial ability was unbelievable. “He very much led from the front.”
Up front, Hoppers Crossing looked dangerous with Alister Smart, Jason Hayne and Daniel Sweeney causing havoc. The Reds cut through with goals to Sweeney and Hayne. “Our front three were fantastic,” Barbara said. “The work rate they got through, their creativity and all the efforts they put in was amazing.” Hoppers Crossing has a trip to second-last Essendon Royals at Ormond Park on Saturday. In men’s state league 3, Point Cook coughed up a half-time lead to settle for a 1-1 draw with FC Strathmore. Jason Moody scored the goal that put the Jets up at the break, but that was cancelled out in the second half. The eighth-placed Jets will host second-last Fawkner at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday. In men’s state league 4 west, Truganina Hornets had a 1-1 draw with Bell Park. Iidle Elmi found the back of the net for the Hornets. The Hornets will face Western Eagles in a clash of the heavyweights at Arndell Park Reserve on Saturday evening. In NPL 2, Werribee City went down 2-1 to Dandenong City at Galvin Park on Sunday. Lance Jenkinson
Emergency splits points By Lance Jenkinson Point Cook’s top two clash with Yarraville Seddon was called off on Saturday after a field umpire suffered an epileptic seizure during the Western Region Football League division 2 match. The game was halted midway through the second quarter for more than 30 minutes and it was ultimately decided that both teams would split the points so to not overburden the other field umpire officiating the game and to not risk injury to the players that had cooled down over time. Point Cook was leading the game by five points at the time, but Bulldogs coach Ian Denny was not worried about the scoreboard when such a serious medical incident took place. “It was a pretty scary incident,” he said. “Footy is just a game, the livelihood of an individual is much more important to me. “I don’t think the result is too much of a worry for either of our clubs at this point in time.” It was Point Cook’s first big test against one of last year’s grand finalists. The Bulldogs, who moved their senior team from the Victorian Amateur Football Association to the WRFL this season, showed in a quarter and a half that they would be a genuine contender to the likes of Yarraville Seddon. “We played for a quarter and a half and were as competitive as they were,” Denny said. “The state of the game was fairly even, we had a couple more shots than they did, so we know we can match it with them.” Point Cook has impressed in its first three completed games since crossing to the new league. The Bulldogs entered Saturday’s game a perfect 3-0 after big wins over Manor Lakes, Newport Power and Albanvale. Denny has lauded the consistency of his team so far. “We’re gaining continuity within the team, which is good,” he said. “It’s worked out alright so far, but we still think our best footy will come in the last five games of the year, not necessarily in the first five.” Point Cook will feature in another blockbuster this Saturday when it hosts defending premier North Footscray at Saltwater Reserve. Denny got to watch North Footscray play in the second half of its local derby with West Footscray and found a totally different style of team to the one his side faced against Yarraville Seddon for 45 minutes. 72 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 9, 2018

It was an historic day for Westbourne Grammarians. The Warriors celebrated their first ever win in the Victorian Amateur Football Association women’s division 3. Lauren Spark kicked three goals to lead the Warriors to a runaway 30-point triumph over Prahran Assumption at the Westbourne School Ground on Saturday. It was also a good day for the men’s side with Westbourne Grammarians overcoming a half-time deficit to steamroll Albert Park by 61 points in division 3. The Warriors’ second win of the season was inspired by the play of Daniel Stoios, Charles Hunter and William Wright, and the finishing of Chris Hudson, who kicked four majors.
Netball
Werribee Centrals have clicked into top gear in GDFL netball. The Centrals pummelled Anakie 58-18 in a one-sided game at Anakie Reserve. Jacinta Savory was the focal point of the Centrals attack, scoring 22 goals, while there were significant contributions from Ellie Tubbs (18 goals) and Jenni Rothery (12). The Centrals sit third on the ladder, one game back of the undefeated Corio and Thomson.

Joel Dwyer goes on a run for Point Cook. (Damjan Janevski)
“They’re a stronger type of team than Yarraville Seddon, who are young and lean and love to run,” he said. “They have got some substantial sized key forwards and some big guys through the middle.” Meanwhile, Manor Lakes has broken through for its first win of the season, downing Parkside by 15 points at Howqua Reserve. In division 1, Werribee Districts survived a scare to beat Caroline Springs by four points at Soldiers Reserve and remain undefeated in four matches. The Tigers will face Hoppers Crossing in a highly anticipated Wyndham derby at Hogans Road Reserve this Saturday.
It will pit the second and third placed sides on the ladder after Hoppers Crossing moved up to third with a dominant 35-point win over Spotswood at home on Saturday. Wyndhamvale’s slow start to the season continued, going down by 21 points to St Albans at Wyndhamvale South Oval. In division 3, Wyndham Suns moved a game clear of the rest with a 70-point annihilation of North Sunshine at Dempster Park. Point Cook Centrals moved into outright second with a 47-point win away to Sunshine Heights. Tarneit cruised to a 56-point win over Braybrook, while Glen Orden went down to Laverton by 81 points.
Werribee Bears maintained their undefeated status in the NRL Victoria first grade with a hard-fought 22-20 victory over Northern Thunder at Haines Drive Reserve. The Bears are already a game clear on top of the ladder. A new challenger is emerging with Truganina Rabbitohs opening the season with two wins from three starts. The Rabbitohs romped to a 42-26 win over the second-placed Casey Warriors at Clearwood Drive Reserve. FOR BREAKING NEWS, VISIT Web: starweekly.com.au Wyndham Star Weekly @WyndhamStarWkly @star_weekly

Nissan favourite gets makeover By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring
four-cylinder petrol engine producing 106kW of power at 6000rpm and 200Nm of torque at a rather high 4400rpm. The entry-level ST features a six-speed manual transmission, the other variants a Nissan Xtronic CVT.
The Nissan Qashqai has led something of a double life since its birth a decade ago when it first came Down Under as the Nissan Dualis. Since then, as well as shedding diesel power, the Japanese crossover has played the name game, reverting to its original global moniker. Now, says Nissan, at the bidding of buyers, the Qashqai has been upgraded and the range simplified. Included are grades from entry-level ST to mid-range ST-L and top-end Ti. Because of manufacturing issues at the plant in England, the Ti has been held back until later this year, being replaced by a N-TEC. Entry to the new Qashqai comes via the ST six-speed manual, priced at $26,490, plus on road costs. A continuously variable automatic adds $2500 to the price. The Qashqai ST-L comes with CVT only for $32,990, while the N-TEC CVT can be had for $36,490. The Ti CVT, we are told, will hit the market at $37,990 in the middle of the year. On test was a Qashqai ST-L CVT at $32,990.
Safety
The new Qashqai takes advantage of Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility technology, which includes Intelligent Emergency Braking with Forward Collision Warning. New are Lane Departure Warning and Hill Start Assist. Intelligent Around View is part of the ST-L, N-TEC and Ti package, while the latter pair add Intelligent Park Assist, Intelligent Driver Alert, Blind Spot Warning and High Beam Assist. N-TEC and Ti add Rear Cross Traffic Alert, plus Adaptive Front Lighting.

Styling
A facelift includes the latest version of the Nissan V-motion grille, framing the new company badge. The latter is now a flat hologram style, which incorporates part of the car’s Intelligent Emergency Braking system, allowing radar waves to pass through it. The radiator grille surround houses the front camera taking part of the picture for the Intelligent Around View monitor, Nissan’s 360-degree parking system, standard on the ST-L. Flanking the grille are halogen headlamps, with daytime running lights consisting of nine LEDs (previously six) and a thicker lens, adding a more modern, premium look. Full

DAB+ digital radio is standard on ST-L grade. The seven-inch touch screen presents satellite navigation clearly and in an app-like format, while hands-free phone operation is improved by the use of a microphone integrated into the overhead lamp.
There’s a flat-bottom steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in or out. The smaller hub and three-spoke design have increased the upper segment by 17 per cent, offering the driver a better view of instrument dials. The front seats have been redesigned on ST-L, giving additional support and more space between driver and passenger. Seat backs are

The cabin takes five adults in relative comfort, while a versatile load space of 430 litres can be extended to 1598 litres with the rear 60:40 rear seat backs folded. The Qashqai is surprisingly nippy, the engine and the CVT combining to produce a smooth journey through the rev range. It sacrifices some efficiency by stepping through changes under hard acceleration. Xtronic uses Intelligent Engine Braking to assist the brakes and deliver smooth deceleration. Fuel consumption on test was recorded at 6.8 litres per 100 kilometres on the motorway and between 10 and 12 litres per 100 in city and suburbs.
