Nine-year-old Pip Canabene is racing to success in the karting world. The Tarneit youngster placed first at his second-ever go-kart event last month. Pip drove in the Bendigo Golden Power Series Round 2 competition, in the Cadet 9 category for entrants aged seven to 10. He completed 14 laps to place first in the race, reaching speeds of more than 65km/h. In February, Pip placed third in a race at the Go Kart Club of Victoria club day in Port Melbourne. Pip said he became interested in go-karting last year thanks to his older brother and “mentor”, Alex, who is also a keen kart racer. Pip said his ultimate ambition was to become a Formula One driver. “What I enjoy most is racing the other kids and going to different tracks,” he said. “The hardest thing is trying to get the fastest times in the qualifying rounds and also passing people.” Pip also plays soccer with Altona Magic. Cash pain for truck stops By Alesha Capone Hundreds of truck drivers have been fined for flouting parking laws in residential streets as part of a month-long operation run by Wyndham council. The council issued 250 fines for trucks parked on nature strips or for being parked for extended periods of time in built-up areas during the operation between January 23 and February 23. The fines, $95 each, were issued in Wyndham Vale, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Drive Titan Power Chair

Under the state’s road rules, heavy or long vehicles cannot park on a nature strip or on roads in built-up areas for longer than an hour, unless signs indicate otherwise. unnecessary risks when entering or exiting their streets. “They are also known to block driveways and make it difficult for emergency vehicles to access properties.” Cr McAliney said residents who complained to the council about trucks that flaunted parking regulations had also said that the vehicles created a “significant amount of noise”, especially early in the morning. “If you drive a truck and want to avoid an unnecessary fine, it’s best to avoid parking in residential streets,” Cr McAliney said.

Council wants action on tip row By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council has called on the state government to intervene in a legal battle over the Werribee tip expansion, saying the matter could escalate to a metropolitan-wide waste management crisis come November. Mayor Peter Maynard said the council has formally requested that Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, use her powers under the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal Act and request that the planning minister call in the contested EPA works approval.
The Western Region Environment Centre (WREC) has successfully applied for VCAT to undertake a review of the (EPA) decision to approve an expansion of Werribee tip, which would allow the council to build four cells that can reach up to 29 metres above natural ground level. This is the height limit enforced on the tip’s existing cells. The parties will have a compulsory conference this week and, if unsuccessful, the matter will go to a five-day hearing starting April 21. Cr Maynard said due to the legal action, the tip will be close to capacity and the council will have to turn away $13.6 million in commercial
contracts come November. The tip will still remain open for Wyndham residents and businesses. Wyndham council city operations director Stephen Thorpe said come November, other councils will have to fork out, on average, an extra $200,000 a month in higher gate fees and transport costs to dump their rubbish in another landfill. “We know we’re going to have to close at some point, the key issue for us is when are we going to be able to re-open? That’s why we’ve asked for the minister to call it in, to give us some certainty about that timeframe.”
But WREC spokesman Harry van Moorst said he wasn’t buying it. “We’re only asking for two things at the moment: one, that they reduce the height … and that it only be a five-year approval, which is double what they have been getting for individual cells. If they don’t want to compromise that’s fine, but don’t blame us.” The state government refused to respond to specific questions posed by Star Weekly. A spokesman for Ms D’Ambrosio said: “As this is currently a matter before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal it would be inappropriate to comment”.

Work has started on the construction of a $13.2 million community centre in Wyndham Vale that will incorporate an integrated family centre and a new Wyndham Aboriginal Community Centre. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard, Aboriginal Affairs Minister Natalie Hutchins, Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz and the Wyndham Aboriginal Community Centre committee gathered last week to officially launch the project. Wyndham council has contributed $10.04 million towards building the centre, with the state government contributing $3.16 million. Cr Maynard said the centre, to be located in Cortland Street, would provide a base for children’s and family services. “The Wyndham Vale community can look forward to a centre with three kindergarten rooms, a beautiful playground, a range of consulting rooms for maternal and child health and other services, and two community activity rooms for larger functions,” Cr Maynard said. He said the centre would have dedicated spaces for the indigenous community, including activity rooms, an arts and craft room, a meeting room, men’s and women’s cultural spaces and an outdoor ceremonial space. Construction of the centre is expected to be completed by mid-2019.

Rail upgrades urgent: council By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham council is calling on the federal government to fast-track funding for rail upgrades on the Melbourne-Geelong train line following the release of a national infrastructure priority list. Mayor Peter Maynard said that while he was happy to see that the Outer Metropolian Ring Road, improved rail capacity on the Melbourne-Geelong rail line and upgrades to the Melbourne rail network had made Infrastructure Australia’s list, he believed
the projected timelines needed to be streamlined. “Improving the rail capacity on the Melbourne-Geelong line is an excellent opportunity to build new rail stations in Wyndham and to leverage this infrastructure to provide services and amenities,� he said. “We are excited about the potential for this to address some of our western growth transport issues, but we’re concerned that the timeframes – 10 to 15 years – are far too long. We need to address train overcrowding as a priority, and we need to do it now.
“With the Werribee line overcrowded and users of these trains deserving much better ‌ we’re hopeful that issues on this line will be addressed very quickly.â€? Cr Maynard said he was disappointed that funding for the western interstate freight terminal and the modernisation of the Werribee South irrigation network had missed the priority list cut. “Wyndham City and many other growth municipality councils are also continuing to urge the federal government to roll out an outer growth area fund to support our joint aims of
providing critical community infrastructure and amenities in our rapidly changing communities,� he said. The Infrastructure Australia priority list, based on more than 500 submissions from governments, stakeholders groups and communities, is used to recommend key infrastructure projects for federal government funding consideration. Infrastructure Australia chair Julieanne Alroe said the rail improvements would “enable our satellite cities to develop stronger economic and employment foundations.�
Masters at football You’re never too old to have a go – that’s the message from the new Werribee Masters women’s football team that will take to the field later this month as one of six sides competing in the inaugural Women’s AFL Masters competition. Fresh off the success of the AFL Women’s League, women aged in their early 30s and beyond are now picking up the footy and kicking their own goals. Werribee player Lianne Salerno said the format of the game was much the same as for men’s league. Games consist of four 15-minute quarters, with modified rules including players not being allowed to tackle to the ground and speccy marks being banned. There are weekly training sessions, but these are not compulsory. “The tackling rules have been modified a bit, to obviously protect an ageing body,� Ms Salerno said with a laugh.
Ms Salerno said there was likely to be six home-and-away rounds in the competition and a small finals series. The Werribee Masters women’s football team will host a come-and-try day at its home ground, Wyndham Vale Reserve, Honour Avenue, Wyndham Vale, from 10.30am-noon on Saturday, April 7. Ten arrested for graffiti crimes By Alesha Capone Police have arrested 10 people after executing warrants at properties across the west last week, as part of a major operation targeting graffiti vandals. More than 700 charges were laid against the alleged offenders, including a 22-year-old Truganina man who was charged with 295 counts of graffiti-related offences including conduct endangering life, criminal damage, burglary, possess with the intent to damage and trespass. A 21-year-old Yarraville man was charged
with 121 counts of graffiti-related offences including conduct endangering life, criminal damage, burglary, possess with the intent to damage and trespass. Another five people – a 23-year-old Truganina man, a 20-year-old Altona man, a 20-year-old South Kingsville man, a 30-year-old Seaford man and a 31-year-old West Footscray man – were charged with more than 300 of counts of graffiti-related offences collectively including criminal damage, possess with the intent to damage and trespass. All of those arrested were bailed to appear in court at a later date.
Police said a 30-year-old Tarneit man, a 20-year-old Altona Meadows man and a 46-year-old South Kingsville woman would also be charged on summons. Police made the arrests early last Tuesday morning, while carrying out warrants at properties in Truganina, Yarraville, Altona, Tarneit, Seaford, Brunswick and West Footscray, as part of an operation codenamed Samurai. A number of items were seized from the properties including two cars, cannabis plants, quantities of ecstasy and ice, cash, laptops, phones, memory cards and hard drives.
Police also seized allegedly stolen goods valued at more than $100,000. Arson and explosives experts attended a property in Yarraville after explosive devices were allegedly located inside a vehicle. Acting Superintendent Andrew Gustke said the results showed Victoria Police’s dedication to holding graffiti vandals to account. “We’ve seen horrific injuries and even deaths as a result of the risky behaviour people engage it to commit these offences so we take it extremely seriously,” he said. A very Noisy vet clinic Birds of a feather may flock together – but animals of all colours, shapes and sizes are welcome at Direct Vet Services in Point Cook. The practice is home to an eclectus parrot named Noisy, who is often visited by British-cross Australian bulldogs, Teddy and Clover, owned by veterinarian Karen Davies. Teddy, Clover and a golden retriever named Penny, who belongs to a veterinary nurse at the surgery, sometimes sit with nervous animals brought in by their owners. Dr Davies said the dogs helped to calm some of the more anxious pets who visited her surgery. And Noisy likes to welcome visitors as they step into Direct Vet’s reception area. “She says hello to clients coming in the door and goodbye when they leave,” Dr Davies said. Noisy’s owners surrendered her to the practice in 2014 after she became ill, but she
recovered thanks to treatment from the Direct Vet team. These days, Noisy enjoys watching other eclectus parrots on Youtube and knows some of the practice staff – and their dogs – by name. She also understands the word “selfie” and knows how to press the button on a mobile phone to take a photo of herself. Dr Davies said Noisy also liked playing ball with one of the vet nurses. Dr Davies, who is in her 27th year as a vet, said her favourite part of the job was connecting with clients. “I love being incorporated into their families and being trusted with their animals,” she said. L
ike most sports-minded boys, when I was growing up, I wanted to play cricket for Australia. I wanted to get my hands on a baggy green cap more than anything else. Footy was big, but it was suburban and as a boy from Laverton, playing for Footscray didn’t have the same grandeur as playing for Australia. I was a huge fan of Ian Redpath, Graham McKenzie then the Chappells (not Trevor) and of course the king of them all, Dennis Lillee. The events of the last week took me back. I was fortunate that my radio career led me to meet Dennis in Perth. I was there to cover the David Bowie tour but when D.K. Lillee walked into the hotel I went weak at the knees. Dennis was no saint. Remember the bet he and Rod Marsh had in England during an Ashes series? And his clash with Javed Miandad was not from the Wisden etiquette manual. He never cheated though, and had he, I – like tens of thousands of Aussie cricket lovers – would have been devastated, as so many are right now. I played a lot of cricket over the years and blokes shining the ball with hair gel or Vaseline
was pretty common. I can honestly say I never did it. I sweated bucketloads, so shining the ball was never an issue. I am still scratching my head about what the Aussie cricketers did. They knocked the rorting politicians off the front page. What a wonderful country we live in. Our political leaders cheat, our number one national sporting team cheats, our number one football codes have massive clouds hanging over them still, from drug cheats. Australia the lucky country? Not exactly. We could not rely on luck so we cheated. This win-at-all-costs mentality corrupts and compromises the core of our values and morals. A much-used sporting expression is ‘Winning isn’t everything – it’s the only thing.’ No it’s not. No one likes losing and there is nothing wrong with that. It does make victory sweeter though when it comes. I feel cheated because some men who were talented enough to fulfil the dream of getting a baggy green cap just dropped it in the sewer and we may never get rid of the smell. ■

Car nabbed in Tarneit
Police impounded a car in Tarneit last Tuesday night (March 27) after the driver was allegedly detected driving at 114km/h. Police spotted the car driving through a 40km/h zone of Tarneit Road about 11.20pm. The driver, a 21-year-old Hoppers Crossing man, is expected to be charged on summons.

Prem baby care ‘lacking’ By Alesha Capone A Werribee South mother has called for Wyndham’s maternity services to be expanded to cater for babies born between 24 and 32 weeks’ gestation. Jody Christo gave birth to her son, Raiden, on October 21 last year, almost three months before his January 11 due date. Ms Christo said she was booked to have Raiden at Werribee Mercy Hospital, so when her waters broke, she and her husband drove to the hospital. When they arrived, she said they were told they would have to be transferred to another hospital because Werribee Mercy was not equipped to deliver, or care for, babies born earlier than a 32-week gestation. “I didn’t even think we would … not be able to have him there,” Ms Christo said. She said she gave birth at the Mercy Hospital for Women in Heidelberg and was transferred to Werribee Mercy about three weeks later. Ms Christo said that although the Mercy Hospital for Women provided “fantastic” care for Raiden, she was concerned Wyndham did not have a hospital equipped to deliver babies born between 24 and 32 weeks. She said that given Wyndham’s fast-growing population, it was a situation that needed to change. “The fact there’s nothing here is incredible,” she said. Werribee Mercy is undergoing an $85 million expansion but that will not change its inability to provide planned care for women who give birth before 32 weeks’ gestation. Mercy Health chief executive – health services Linda Mellors said the Werribee hospital provided care for women and babies “requiring low to moderate risk care”.

“For some pregnant women and babies, changes and emergencies do occur,” Adjunct Professor Mellors said. On those occasions, the Paediatric Infant Perinatal Emergency Retrieval – a 24-hour statewide service – can organise for mothers to be sent to Mercy Hospital for Women, Royal Women’s Hospital, Royal Children’s Hospital
and Monash Medical Centre, which provide level 5 and 6 care for babies. A St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee spokeswoman said it transferred babies born at 36 weeks or earlier to its sister hospital in Fitzroy. The state government was contacted for comment.

Meningococcal youth vaccine offer extended The state government has extended its free meningococcal vaccination program for year 10 students and teenagers aged 15 to 16 until the end of the year. The program will be available at secondary schools, GP clinics and council immunisation sessions until December 31. There were 89 cases of meningococcal diagnosed in Victoria in 2017, including 27 cases in the northern and western metropolitan region of Melbourne, which includes Wyndham, Melton, Hobsons Bay, Brimbank and Maribyrnong. As of March 16 this year, eight cases of meningococcal have been diagnosed in Victoria. Meningococcal disease can cause inflammation of the membrane covering the brain, blood infections and severe infections in joints, throat, lungs and intestines. The disease can develop quickly and can cause serious illness, permanent disability or death. One in 10 cases of meningococcal disease prove to be fatal, with death occurring within 24 to 48 hours of diagnosis. The government program offers a vaccine to protect against four strains of meningococcal disease. Pop -up park has staying power By Charlene Macaulay A push to make Point Cook’s pop-up park a permanent feature is on the path to having a promising pay-off. More than 2160 residents have signed an online petition in support of permanent status for the park, at Point Cook Town Centre’s restaurant precinct along Murnong Street. Point Cook Action Group’s Susan McIntyre, one of the driving forces behind the project, said the park had topped expectations, with locals and traders alike embracing the project.
The group is keen for the park to continue running and needs the green light from both the Point Cook Town Centre and Wyndham council, which owns the street. “We’re hoping it won’t be taken down on April 15 [as originally planned],� Ms McIntyre said. Point Cook Town Centre centre manager Frank Pizi said the park had been a great drawcard. “Feedback from shoppers has been overwhelmingly positive, with thousands of people attending these last few weeks,� he said.

Badge of remembrance For members of the Werribee RSL, Anzac Day is a time to catch up with friends and remember the sacrifices of those who gave their lives in armed conflicts. The RSL sub-branch’s president Daryl Ryan and vice-president David ‘Paddy’ McDiarmid, who is also the club’s appeals officer, said April 25 was a day of both happiness and sadness. “It’s to catch up with your mates,� Mr Ryan said. “For those who have passed on, I think it’s also to reflect on what they did, they gave their lives – more than 60,000 Australians died in World War I.� Mr McDiarmid and Mr Ryan encourage Wyndham residents to support this year’s Anzac Appeal. Every year in the lead-up to Anzac Day, the two men deliver “honesty boxes� of Anzac badges to venues across Wyndham, including Bunnings, Pacific Werribee, Coles,
Woolworths, nursing homes and car yards. Mr Ryan said they would also deliver the boxes to 49 schools in the municipality. As well, volunteers will help to sell the badges at sites throughout Wyndham. Mr McDiarmid said the funds raised from selling the badges were put towards worthwhile causes, such as helping to pay rent and bills of Australian Defence Force veterans. He said the funds also helped to run the Werribee RSL’s welfare bus, which takes veterans to medical appointments. “Every year, whatever we raise from the sale of badges, we send back to Anzac House, and they send half back to us,� Mr McDiarmid said. Flight plans on course Amber Liprino is up in the air with excitement. The 16-year-old Werribee resident got to play out a Top Gun fantasy when she took part in the Air Force Technical Camp for Young Women at the Wagga Wagga RAAF base. Amber was among 20 young women aged between 16 and 22 to get a taste of what life in the air force is like – experiencing military aviation and technical roles first-hand, the day-to-day routine at the RAAF base, mentoring sessions with technical trainees and engineers, public speaking tasks and team building activities. “Overall, the week was pretty amazing,” she said. “I really enjoyed aircraft marshalling. We squeezed a two-week course into six hours and we got to practise aircraft marshalling and then sit in the plane and see aircraft marshalling from the pilot’s perspective. “The confidence course was also great. It focused a lot on military movements, strength training and team work.” The camps, which have been running since 2013, are a boon for recruiting new members, with 79 per cent of participants going on to actively pursue careers with the air force. Vacant land lots in Point Cook’s greenfield areas had a median price of $461,000 in the fourth quarter of last year – the highest of all Melbourne’s growth areas. A 42 per cent price rise between October and December “resulted in an exodus of first home buyers who have been priced out of the area”, according to a report released by the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA). The UDIA’s annual State of the Land report stated the municipality of Casey, in the south-eastern suburbs, recorded the second-highest median price rise for greenfield lots, reaching $365,000 in the last quarter of 2017 (a 35 per cent rise from the previous quarter). Craigieburn ($325,000), Epping ($315,000) and Brimbank ($314,500) rounded out the top five, with Hoppers Crossing placing seventh with a 30 per cent rise in the median price of greenfield lots, reaching $297,150. Melton was 11th on the list, with its greenfield land lots increasing 47 per cent to a median price of $234,000. Other top locations in the report included Pakenham, Wallan, Sunbury and South Morang. The UDIA report said the Melbourne greenfield market “continued to out-perform other capital cities in the 2017 calendar year.” Forty per cent of greenfield lots released nationally last year were located in Melbourne, and the city’s median lot price of $304,000 (at the end of December quarter) remained lower than the national average of $313,000. Harmony hits the right note A melting pot of culture was celebrated at Tarneit P-9 College recently when the school hosted its own Harmony Day celebrations. Year 9 students Palwasha Ahmed and laila Noaman, pictured, were among those who donned cultural garb for the day, while others wore the colour orange – which signifies social communication and meaningful conversations – on the day. Central service for abuse victims By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham’s long-awaited multi-disciplinary centre is set to open its doors in a month’s time, pairing up a number of family violence and other support services under one roof. Victoria Police’s Westgate Family Violence Unit and Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation teams will occupy the top floor of the Wyndham Medical and Services Centre on Hoppers Lane, alongside child protection staff from the Department of Health and Human
Services. They will be joined by community health nurses, forensic medical officers, child protection staff and counsellors from the Western Region Centre Against Sexual Assault, Women’s Health West and Gatehouse, which helps child victims of sexual abuse. Star Weekly understands the new facility will open on May 1. It will become the seventh multi-disciplinary centre in the state, and has been modelled on existing centres in Geelong, Mildura, Seaford, Dandenong, Bendigo and Morwell.
Wyndham Police Inspector Marty Allison said the multi-disciplinary centre – which is also close to the Werribee Mercy Hospital – would be a one-stop shop for victims of sexual offences, child abuse and family violence. “They’re all going to be housed under the same roof, with all the other support agencies regarding sex offences and child abuse, which is going to be great for Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong,” he said. Visiting the construction site late last year, Minister for Families and Children
and Youth Affairs Jenny Mikakos said having several services located in the same building meant sexual assault survivors would be able to receive help in a more timely manner. “It means survivors won’t have to keep moving from service to service, or building to building, or keep repeating their stories to different professionals,” she said. Last week’s release by the Federal Government’s Infrastructure Australia of their priorities lists 33 New South Wales and only 13 Victoria projects. This is hard to swallow given Melbourne’s growing faster than Sydney. However it was good to see the recommendation to improve our rail network, important outer suburban roads and removal of level crossings to address congestion. I reckon these projects should be delivered much more quickly. Both the RACV and Infrastructure Australia also share Wyndham’s view that governments should start reserving and buying land to connect the outer south west and outer north through the Outer Metropolitan Ring Road project within 5 years. That’s a good start and in Wyndham we’ve already reserved land needed for this project which is linked to so many other road and rail priorities to improve the quality of life for locals. So while I find the Infrastructure Australia priority list baffling, I’ll continue as Mayor and Council’s Transport and Growth Portfolio Holder to knock on doors and argue for more cooperation between the Federal and State Governments to fund these critical projects. Activities go pop Young artists have created books for a miniature library in the Point Cook Town Centre’s pop-up park. Students from a studio run by Point Cook artist Anindita Banerjee spent two weeks making the books which were then transferred into a cubbyhouse ‘library’ at the pop-up park on Murnong Street.

The artist who created a statue stolen from a Laverton park has described the theft as “an attack on the community”. Dean Bowen’s 1.2 metre-high statue (pictured) – titled Walking Figure and part of a set of three called Linking Laverton – was cut off at its feet from the stone base at the Thomas Street entry to McCormack Park. Police say the heavy statue would have required tools and a trailer or ute to remove. Bowen said the stolen piece, which represented sustainable transport, was likely stolen for the value of the bronze metal. “It’s a pretty bad feeling,” he said. “It’s been there eight years without anything and now someone’s done this. It’s just disgraceful. It’s kind of like an attack on the community. It’s like stealing something that belongs to everybody.” Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair described the theft as “very disheartening”. “If anyone saw anything suspicious or knows anything we ask you to please contact the police,” she said. Parades cap Easter festivities Hats off to students from two Hoppers Crossing schools, who celebrated Easter in fine style. Derrimut Heath Primary School, which is part of Baden Powell College, and Woodville Primary School hosted Easter hat parades in the lead-up to the school holidays. Youngsters at Derrimut Heath took part in an Easter bonnet parade on March 28, showing off the diverse and colourful headwear they had made during class, followed by a picnic.
Woodville prep and grades 1 and 2 pupils participated in their school’s annual Easter hat parade on March 29. Students had spent time working with older children from their “buddy” grades, to create artistic hats for the occasion. Precious gift for Mercy By Alesha Capone Werribee Mercy Hospital has welcomed the donation of a cuddle cot, in memory of a much-loved baby boy. In May last year, Altona Meadows mother Victoria Reynolds lost her son, Dexter Charles, at five months gestation. At the time, a Point Cook family who had lost their little girl donated a cuddle cot to the Mercy. Ms Reynolds said that for her and husband Nathan, the cuddle cot – a specially-designed device which keeps a stillborn baby’s body at a temperature of preservation – offered them a precious chance to spend time with Dexter.

“It’s nice to be able to give families an opportunity to cuddle for as long as they want,” she said. “It’s giving people the gift of time.” Ms Reynolds said her time at the hospital had inspired her to help other parents who lost their babies. With the “invaluable help” of her friend Anna Quinlan and donations from local businesses, Ms Reynolds organised a fundraising high-tea in September. Council has its own Encore Wyndham council will take over the running of Encore Events Centre as part of a plan to boost community use of the multi-million dollar facility. City life director Jenny McMahon said the council would manage and operate the Derrimut Road events centre from July 1, taking the reins from Venue Management Services, who has looked after the site since it opened in 2015. “Council has made the decision to manage the venue ourselves as it will help us achieve our goal of increasing the community’s access and usage of this great asset,” Ms McMahon said. “Managing other local venues like the Wyndham Cultural Centre also means we are better positioned to meet the needs of the community. By managing the Encore Events Centre, council will be able to provide more spaces that the community can hire and hold a wider range of activities, including arts and cultural events. “Some of the changes we plan to introduce will include offering menus that showcase local produce and beverages, as well as employing more local staff.” The Encore Events Centre was opened in 2015 as part of a $54 million redevelopment of the Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre. MY WYNDHAM Tony Weldon lived all over the western suburbs before coming to Point Cook six years ago. In that time, he’s become the longest serving member of the Point Cook Lions Club. He sat down with Charlene Macaulay last week. What is your connection to Wyndham? We moved from Yarraville to Seabrook in 1987 … we did what most young couples do and headed [further] out to the suburbs to build something bigger. We were in Seabrook for about 10 years and then we moved to Altona Meadows, and moved from there to Point Cook about six years ago. I love Point Cook, it’s a great community. It amazes me, and I often say to people, that for a suburban setting, there’s a lot of country-town feel about it in the way the population there are able to connect with each other and jump on board with a lot of community causes.
I’ve been married for 40 years. I met my wife Janice when we were working at Myer in the city together. She had been working there for some time … I met Janice on my first or second day and we sort of clicked and got married pretty quickly after that – about six months later. It was a whirlwind courtship. A lot of people were very surprised, but it seemed right and it’s stood the test of time. We’ve got two children, a daughter who has two children and a son who lives with us, he has Aspergers, and he works for me as well. You’re the longest-servng member of the Point Cook Lions Club. Why did you join? I’ve been a lion for about 20 years. When we moved to Seabrook both of my kids had

The Mayor of Altona, Cr. D. K. Grant, has written to the Banner objecting to a story on page one of last week’s issue in which it was mentioned that a rumor was circulating that Altona Council wanted the North Laverton industrial area taken away from Werribee Shire. The reducetarian way to better health, less weight The Reducetarian Foundation has come out with an eating regime it says has personal, environmental and animal welfare benefits, but that is less onerous than those followed by vegetarians, vegans and paleo followers. Brian Kateman, co-founder and president of the US movement, says anyone who aspires to gradually reduce meat, eggs and dairy intake qualifies as a reducetarian. He says it’s about reducing apprehension over an all-or-nothing approach that requires a daunting level of commitment, dedication and effort. Getting on the reducetarian wagon provides loads of health benefits as habits are changed over time, small steps first. He points out four – among many – of those health advantages: 1. You’ll get your weight down – and keep it down A study has shown a shift to plant and complex carbs-based eating can mean a 10-kilogram weight loss in the first year. The same study showed that the weight stayed off five years later – and it was achieved without counting calories or carbs. 2. You’ll probably live longer A new study from the US National Academy of Sciences claims moving toward a more plant-based diet could reduce global mortality by six to 10 per cent. A 30-year study of Japan’s Okinawan centenarians showed they had a low-calorie diet of unrefined complex carbs, fruits, vegies and soy. This chimes with the academy’s findings. 3. You’ll fend off disease Eating a plant-based diet is an effective way to stop the progression of coronary artery disease or prevent it entirely. It’s also been shown to reduce the risks of various types of cancer, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. 4. You’ll lessen menopause symptoms Since phytoestrogens can increase and decrease estrogen and progesterone levels, maintaining a balance of them in your diet helps ensure a more comfortable passage through menopause. Phytoestrogens can be found in hundreds of foods, including soy, apples, beets, cherries, dates, garlic, olives, plums, raspberries, squash and yams. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir uncovers an Italian masterpiece The Harley & Rose dining room has a cosy, almost clubbish, vibe about it. The place appears to have already earned places in the hearts of many, including West Footscray’s young family demographic. And, yes, there is a kids menu. The Team CTS of four on hand can rise to the occasion of three-hour-plus meals. But mostly we’re very much of the “bring us food and make it snappy” school. So we really appreciate the terrific service and the beautifully paced arrival of our various choices. It could be said that Harley & Rose serves mostly orthodox Italian – but that would be misleading. For instead of bolognese or veal scaloppine or minestrone, there are wonderful surprises at almost every turn. We share four starters. Salami ($12), with caper berries on the side, has just the right perfume level of fennel. Our other choices mostly display exactly the same levels of light and right. They include Noix de Jambon with fresh fig ($15) and smoked ocean trout, Grand Marnier and horseradish ($16). Though the crunchy/gooey gorgonzola dolce croquettes with quince ketchup ($9) certainly up the richness factor quite a bit. For mains, for us, two pasta offerings and two pizzas. Spaghetti cacio e pepe ($19) is profoundly simple, sinfully rich perfection – just pasta,

From the short specials line-up, Bennie chooses rigatoni with a sticky tomato sauce including fermented chilli and pancetta ($18). Loves it, he does, though its consumption concludes with a familiar refrain from him: “Wow – that was bigger than it looked!” If anything, perhaps our super dooper pizzas are the real high points of our eating evening. Neapolitan ($20) with sweet pepper, tomato, anchovy, olives and oregano and and house sausage ($22) with pork sausage, fennel, tomato, eggplant and pecorino both exhibit great flavours. Desserts? Oh, yes, we’re definitely in that sort of mood. Tiramisu ($14) is a straight-up top-shelf rendition of a classic. Meringue with pink pepper melon and apple granita ($12) is amazing. The blending of the poached meringue (a bit like a gooey marshmallow) with the cool pink cubes, crunchy granita and the all-important mint equals a taste explosion.

Tigers deliver at last Werribee’s leadership will have a familiar look in the coming Victorian Football League season. Werribee has undergone major infrastructure changes at Avalon Airport Oval and a playing list overhaul since cutting ties with North Melbourne to become, once again, a stand-alone club. But the side’s leadership remains unchanged, with Michael Sodomaco once again fronting as captain. Sodomaco is the head of a five-player leadership group with three-time Bruce Montgomery Trophy winner Matt Hanson, Jake Sharp, Tom Gribble and Kurt Aylett. SPORT High winds make tough riding in Altona So Dudkiewicz took a gamble and set out to get to the leading riders. “I knew I had to bridge to the guys up the road or I would regret it,” he said. “I got to Brad Erickson, who was in no-man’s-land, hoping to join forces, but he was cooked. So I kept going and got on to Miles DaCosta and Lachlan Marshal and recovered somewhat. I knew that once I got there I could take the sprint.” Dudkiewicz did indeed take the sprint, finishing three bike lengths clear of DaCosta and Marshal, with Jason Costin taking the bunch sprint in behind. In the women’s open race, after a civilised few laps, the attacks started and within 20 minutes the field was split into two bunches. The front bunch of four then split into two bunches of two after Diane Edwards threw in an attack in an attempt to get away solo to victory.
That left Edwards in a great position with Erika Gosney and reigning champion Sarah Dam in hot pursuit with Jill Stevenson. Gosney and Edwards kept the pressure up and maintained their lead over the chasers and then began positioning themselves for the sprint to the line. As they headed into the sprint, Edwards’ gears refused to index for several precious seconds, which meant she lost valuable momentum. Edwards and Gosney approached the line side by side, with Gosney taking the win by a tyre width. Williamstown youngster John Ross took out B grade, Altona Meadows rider Ben Redpath won C grade and Werribee veteran Tommy Gray took out D grade at the age of 75. Mark Micallef
Reds’ loss overturned By Lance Jenkinson Hoppers Crossing has been awarded all three points from its season opening clash with Sydenham Park in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 at Grange Reserve on March 24. The Reds were notified last week that Sydenham Park had used an ineligible player, so their 1-0 loss was overturned to a 3-0 victory. The player in question was Sydenham Park star Koce Delev, who actually scored the winning goal in the game. Delev had accumulated a fifth yellow card towards the end of last season, which carries a one-game suspension the following league game, which happened to be the round one clash with Hoppers Crossing. “It’s a little mix-up on their behalf,” Hoppers Crossing coach Shaun Barbara said. “To be fair, I don’t think there was any malice in it from Sydenham Park. “I think that they thought he had served his suspension in the FFA Cup, which could’ve been a simple mistake made unfortunately. “Like anything, you’ve just got to abide by the rules, and we’ve been given the three points.” It is the first time in Barbara’s career that he has been involved in a game where his team has been awarded points on a technicality. Barbara is not comfortable with the manner in which the points were received, but he felt that Hoppers Crossing did enough in the game to get something out of it. “Realistically, you never want to take points off somebody in this kind of way,” he said. “You always want to be able to do that on the park. “To be fair, I thought over the course of the game we deserved something out of the game anyway.” It was Hoppers Crossing’s first game since being promoted to state league 1. The Reds went in as underdogs but took it up to a Sydenham Park team that has been a strong club in this division for a long time. “I think we’d feel like a thief if we played terribly, they had absolutely smashed us and here we are taking three points from them, I would’ve felt embarrassed almost,” Barbara said. “But the fact we put in an absolutely ripping performance for our first game against what is a top five side in state 1 and had them on the ropes for a little bit, maybe it’s a bit of good karma coming back our way. “They had the equal amount of chances, but I thought over the course of the game, we were the better side, we played some really good football.” It was a big day for Hoppers Crossing with a huge turnout to see how their side would
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Former world boxing champion Barry Michael left Williamstown to do the Kokoda trek a few weeks back, but unfortunately it did not turn out well. After six days of pretty intense trekking, torrential rain made the track more hazardous than normal. Barry fell and re-injured his ribs, but soldiered on until he could take no more. He was in a bad way and had to be choppered to the nearest hospital. He cried, not from the physical pain of his broken ribs and bruises, but from the emotional toll of seeing what our brave soldiers went through. Barry’s father, Len, 94, was a British fighter pilot in WWII. Barry is back home and recovering and will be ready for his next big fight night (as a promoter) on April 13 at Melbourne Pavilion. ■ Another western suburbs icon passed last week, with the death of Williamstown Football Club Legend Gerry Callahan. “The Monster” was a colossus on and off the field with a big personality to match his unbelievable football career. He was a Seagulls legend, captain of the Team of the Century, five-time premiership captain and coached the club to two flags. He played 171 games and kicked 75 goals, with the club best and fairest medal named in his honour. Condolences from all sports fans in the west to Peggy and Gerry’s family and friends. A great man. In the WRFL, all eyes will be on Glenorden, which is returning after a similar break. It will be very tough, but the Hawks have been through a lot in recent years. I wish them the best and hope they get the support, on and off the field, they need to make the club strong again.

With a strong and blustery north-westerly howling and dark clouds threatening rain, Footscray Cycling Club riders converged upon Altona’s much-loved Drake Boulevard circuit to contest the Eric Turner Memorial Club Criterium Championships. A series of blistering tailwind attacks in the A-grade race saw the field thinned down considerably before the 30-minute mark, at which point the riders unleashed a series of serious attacks. Reigning club criterium and road champion Dominik Dudkiewicz was a marked man stuck in the bunch. “I think the head and tail wind meant it was hard breaking up the bunch and everyone seemed to have a plan that I wasn’t part of,” he said. “Every time I got into a break it seemed to stall. With five laps to go I was frustrated and stuck.”
