It all adds up for the kids The numbers are stacking up as a program to help develop children’s maths skills is rolled out at kindergartens in Wyndham, Brimbank and Melton. The Let’s Count initiative, aimed at youngsters aged three to five, helps parents and early years educators to develop the maths skills of the children in their care by counting, measuring and identifying patterns that occur in daily life. Werribee MP Tim Pallas last week announced that about 500 educators at kindergartens across the state would participate in the program for three years. In Wyndham, Iramoo, College Road Kindergarten, Community Children Wyndham Vale, Heathdale, The Manor, Thomas Chirnside, Vista Way and Wyndham Vale kindergartens will take part in Let’s Count. Mr Pallas said mathematics was an important skill for children to master. “Maths is one of the foundations of essential learning and to make it fun, for Werribee kids is a great step in making kids ready for school,” he said. “It is great to see the introduction of Let’s Count in the Werribee electorate to encourage parents, carers and pre-school educators to help kids see that learning is fun and engaging.” EHLYNA, 4

New cops to hit the beat By Charlene Macaulay Eighteen new police will be on the beat in Wyndham from May as part of a statewide roll-out of 825 new police over the next year. Wyndham will start to receive 12 general duties police and six family violence specialist police from May, while the Westgate division – which covers Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong – will also receive 12 divisional crime investigation officers and one divisional crime scene services officer as part of the policing boost. The full roll-out is expected to take 12 months.
The extra numbers are on top of the 27 new police announced for Wyndham in November, with the final officers from that allocation to be in place by April. Another 10 were also allocated to the Westgate division’s crime investigation unit and sexual offences and child abuse investigations teams. Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said 300 of the new deployment were being allocated to areas with the highest need for policing services, including Wyndham, Geelong, Melton, Hume and Cardinia. “Our absolute focus is on keeping people safe. To do that we need to be the best policing
service we can be – agile and responsive to the needs of communities, on the front foot, preventing crime and locking up offenders,” he said. Premier Daniel Andrews said it was the biggest roll-out of new police in Victoria’s history. “We promised to give Victoria Police the resources, powers and technology they need to keep Victorians safe – and that’s exactly what we’ve done.” Wyndham council safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney welcomed the deployment.
“We’ve been lobbying extremely hard behind the scenes,” Cr McAliney said. “In the last five years, we’ve experienced an increase of more than 50 per cent in family violence incidents, compared to a 28 per cent increase Victoria-wide. “The crime rate in that area is just huge, so [these numbers] will help put a dint hopefully in our family crime stats. “Police numbers are only one aspect of a justice system, and we’ve got to start pushing for our local justice precinct. While police numbers are there to assist with our local policing, the other services are critical as well.”

Crime concerns raised By Alesha Capone Youth crime, gangs and home invasions have been identified as some of the main issues of concern to Wyndham residents. The concerns were raised during three safety forums held in December – in Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook – which were attended by a total of 158 people. Another 256 Wyndham residents submitted feedback on issues such as crime and safety through the Engage Victoria website in December. The forums, funded by the Department of Justice, were held as part of the Community
Safety Networks partnership between Victoria Police, state government, councils, Crime Stoppers and Neighbourhood Watch. A preliminary report on the forums was delivered to police last week. Wyndham police Inspector Marty Allison said the three main themes of concern which emerged from the Hoppers Crossing forum were family violence, home invasions and youth hoon driving. Inspector Allison said the issues raised at the Werribee event were the need for community connections and for different multicultural communities to work together; safety
around public transport; and youth crime, disengagement and a lack of education and employment opportunities. He said the main issues arising from the Point Cook forum were home invasions; gangs and anti-social behaviour predominantly involving young people; and residents’ desire for increased police visibility and patrols. Inspector Allison said the issues required a whole-of-community response. He said Wyndham police hoped to host another community safety forum about mid-year, and would continue their Coffee with a Cop sessions and police pop-up events.

Three candidates from the 2016 Wyndham council election have been charged after failing to declare who donated, and how much, to their election campaigns. The Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate last week charged Helen Simeonidis, Wanli (Lucy) Jiang and Sahra Ashkir with failing to submit a campaign donation return following the 2016 council election. All three will front the Werribee Magistrates’ Court on March 20 for a mention. The trio face fines of more than $9300 each if found guilty. Candidates are required to submit campaign donation returns when they receive any gifts or donations over the value of $500. Chief municipal inspector David Wolf said the three Wyndham candidates – none of whom were elected – were among 15 statewide now facing prosecution. “A key factor in the integrity of local government is ensuring the transparency on who has financially supported candidates and councillors,” Mr Wolf said. Ms Simeonidis hung up when Star Weekly called for comment, Ms Jiang did not return Star Weekly’s calls and Ms Ashkir could not be contacted by deadline. A total of 44 Wyndham candidates failed to lodged their campaign donations report by the December 1, 2016 deadline, prompting several rounds of follow-up action by the Inspectorate. Charlene Macaulay

Werribee’s biggest street festival is set to return to Watton Street this month. Weerama will celebrate the big 4-0 this year with a jam-packed festival on Sunday, March 18, from 10am-4pm. Festival president Marcel Mahfoud said Weerama-goers can enjoy market stalls, rides, food trucks and the annual Watton Street parade, which kicks off at 11am. It’s the first year in many years that the Weerama committee has enjoyed a drama-free lead-up to the event. The festival was cancelled in 2015 when the council refused grant money to fix committee governance issues, including administration and bookkeeping. On the road to easing traffic By Charlene Macaulay Work to duplicate and widen seven of Wyndham’s busiest roads will begin in a couple of months. Further detail and timing on the $1.8 billion Western Roads package has been revealed, with the duplication of Dunnings and Palmers roads, between the Princes Freeway and Point Cook Road, to begin in May. The upgrade will include duplicating Dunnings Road from two to four lanes, and Palmers Road from two to six lanes, including a bus lane.
Other works include: • Duplicating Derrimut Road between Sayers and Dohertys roads from two lanes to four lanes (work to begin in May); • Duplicating Leakes Road between Fitzgerald and Derrimut roads from two lanes to four lanes, and up to 12 intersection upgrades (work to begin in June); • Duplicating Dohertys Road between Foundation Road and Palmers Road from two to four lanes, and installing traffic lights at Port Phillip prison (works to begin in July); • Duplicating Dohertys Road between
Fitzgerald Road and Grieve Parade from two lanes to four, and widening the bridge over the Princes Freeway (work to begin in July); • Constructing new westerly-oriented entry and exit ramps from Princes Freeway to Duncans Road and replacing the existing bridge over Princes Freeway (work to begin in August); • Duplicating Palmers Road between Princes Freeway West and the Western Freeway with two lanes each way (works to being in December); and • Duplicating Forsyth Road to four lanes,
including realigning Forsyth and Old Geelong roads, and widening the Forsyth Road bridge (works to begin January 2019). Frank De Santis from VicRoads said all works were expected to be complete by the end of 2021. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said the council had flagged concerns about the sequencing of works with both VicRoads and Netflow. “While we appreciate the state government’s investment in local roads, we will continue to advocate for further upgrades.�
Families all fired up Meet Werribee’s future firefighters. Werribee siblings Brandon and Breanna Borg and Ryobi and Blake Hindle are all active members of Werribee CFA’s junior brigade, and got their first taste of the work of volunteer firefighters recently when they competed at the Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria state urban junior championships in Warrnambool. The events at the competition are designed to help budding firefighters become efficient in operational skills. Breanna, 16, was inspired to join the junior brigade by her cousin Emily Martignago and believes being involved with the emergency services will her help achieve her goal of becoming a paramedic. “I wanted to follow in [Emily’s] footsteps, she’s always been an inspiration,� Breanna said. “The Werribee Fire Brigade is like a second family to us. We love the togetherness of doing things as a family.�
Similarly, Ryobi and Blake are one of many family members to be involved with Werribee CFA, with aunts, uncles and cousins already part of the crew. “We think it’s a good way to help out the community,� Ryobi said. One welcome reception By Alesha Capone Having your baby in a hospital foyer is not the most traditional way to give birth, but parents Nicole and Brett Thomas say they wouldn’t have it any other way. The Williams Landing couple welcomed their third child, Georgia Hope, into the world on Sunday, February 25, at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Melbourne. Mrs Thomas said she and her husband were at home at the weekend when they realised Georgia was on her way.

Mrs Thomas’ mother Debbie began urging them to go to the hospital, so they started the 35-minute drive to the city. “When we were seven minutes away from the hospital, my waters broke and then we could tell she was really coming,” Mrs Thomas said. When the couple arrived at the hospital, the receptionist tried to find a wheelchair for Mrs Thomas, while Mr Thomas went outside to lock the car. When he ran back to the hospital, the doors were locked. Mr Thomas said as he knocked, he could see his wife on her hands and knees in the foyer. He was let back inside just as their daughter was born at 2.37am. “Two little pushes and she was in my arms,” he said. Mrs Thomas said Georgia was born only two or three minutes after they arrived at the hospital, with the whole labour lasting about seven hours.

“I knew I wasn’t going to make it upstairs [to the hospital maternity ward], my instincts definitely took over,” Mrs Thomas said. “Having my husband catch her was not something I ever expected to experience, I think it’s been a real bonding experience
for him and I, it was very special. It wasn’t what I had planned, but I wouldn’t change a thing.” Georgia weighed 3.680kg when she was born, and is a little sister to Mackenzie, aged five, and Brooklyn, aged two.

Bill to replace damaged trees may hit $5000 Wyndham ratepayers will have to fork out thousands of dollars to replace trees at a Point Cook park which were destroyed by vandals last month. On February 24, vandals damaged trees in the Annandale Mews Park, which is located near The Strand and Willowgreen Way. Wyndham director of city operations Stephen Thorpe said about 10 Queensland brush box trees were “damaged beyond repair”. Mr Thorpe said the five-year-old trees appeared to have been purposely hit by a vehicle. “We are extremely disappointed that these trees have been destroyed,” Mr Thorpe said. “They belong to the community and it is not good enough that someone would think it is OK to undertake this reckless vandalism.” Mr Thorpe said the trees had to be removed as a result of the damage, but would be replaced as part of the council’s street tree planting program, which is due to occur between April and June. “It is estimated that replacing the trees will cost ratepayers up to $5000, which includes the removal of the damaged trees, their replacement and two years of maintenance,” Mr Thorpe said. Kevin Hillier advocates a career of fun for our kids
T
he idea of career advice for primary school students, floated recently, has been greeted with much disdain and ridicule. To some extent, I tend to agree. We seem hellbent on taking the fun out of childhood and coercing kids to make decisions and prepare for a life that may not exist by the time they get there. Our children appear to be subjected to test after test in some quest to plot their future before they have a chance to see what the world is about and make their own decisions. There is lots of talk about how it was back in the day, but little latitude to allow kids the same breathing space to grow. Admittedly, times have changed and the world is not as safe as it was. My bike riding skills and my bike would not last five minutes in today’s suburban traffic. Local parks aren’t what they used to be as meeting points for the neighbourhood Test match. Kids adapt to their surroundings very well, as long as adults are kept out of the picture. We are the ones who changed the landscape and
our kids are adapting to it. Whether it is for safety or convenience, we drive our children everywhere and we are involved in all their activities. How many times do we tell them to grow up and stop acting like two-year-olds? We probably should say that more often to adults. What is the right age to decide your career path? There isn’t one. What about all the people who do a job for 20 years and then change and find their real calling in life? I know 50-year-olds who have been in the workforce for decades and still have no idea what they really want to do. They have had jobs to make money, but never had a job that made them happy. Who said you have to have one job or one career path for the rest of your life? The way some industries are changing and shedding jobs, that is not always a viable option. Rather than giving career advice to 10-year-olds, I think we should be getting career advice from them. There seems to be many more dissatisfied adults than there are 10-year-olds. ■

Equestrian centre burglary
Police are investigating a burglary at a Werribee South equestrian centre on January 9. Police said a man cut through a chain-link fence and entered a storage compound at the K Road premises between 2.30am and 4am. Geelong rejects regional plan By Alesha Capone

A state MP and the mayor of Greater Geelong council have spoken against the idea of joining Wyndham to create a new region. Last month, Star Weekly Weekly reported that Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard was calling on the state government to establish a new region, known as the Wyndham, Avalon and Geelong City-Rural Region, to prioritise investment in the fast-growing region. Following Cr Maynard’s comments, Western Victorian MP Simon Ramsay told Parliament that residents of the Geelong region would “not entertain the idea” of joining with Wyndham. “I do thank Lindsay Fox for providing that wonderful buffer of the Avalon Airport to that creeping metropolis of Wyndham and all its baggage that it has,” he said. Mr Ramsay said he intended “baggage” as a “respectful term” meaning the demand for services in Wyndham, such as hospitals and schools. He said that Geelong, the Surf Coast and Bellarine had a “different lifestyle and different identity” from the western growth suburbs of Melbourne. This sentiment was echoed by the mayor of Greater Geelong, Bruce Harwood. Cr Harwood said while he understood Wyndham council was keen to attract more funding for infrastructure, Greater Geelong was “very mindful that we want to retain our identity as the second city in Victoria”. “For us, the key is to retain our own identity as a city and not an outer suburb of Melbourne.” Wyndham chief executive Kelly Grigsby said the council was not suggesting a merger, but was advocating for Wyndham, Avalon and Geelong to be recognised as its own region or corridor, as a way of driving investment across all three areas.

Singing her praises For Werribee gospel singer Jolie Mpia, music is a universal language. Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mpia sings in Swahili, Lingala, French and English. No matter the language, she believes the message is always the same – encouraging people to follow their dreams. “I want to encourage people to keep going, stay positive and do what you want to do,” she said. The talented songstress began singing at the age of eight, following in the footsteps of her mother, who would sing at church. Mpia herself now sings every week at the United International Church in Werribee.
She is also a success on Youtube, where one of her music videos attracted more than 60,000 views in one month. Another video attracted more than 23,000 views in two months. Mpia is now hoping to use her singing talent to help others. She released an album, titled Champion, last year and is working on a second album, with the profits to go toward helping orphans around the world. Fun run for Mercy’s sake

By Charlene Macaulay It’s the fun run that’s raised thousands in much-needed funds for Werribee Mercy’s critical care unit. About 700 people pounded the pavement and raised their heart rates on Sunday for the 11th annual Wyndham Rotary Fun Run. The event, which started at Chirnside Park and wound along the Werribee River Trail, included five-kilometre and 10-kilometre courses for runners, four-kilometre and eight-kilometre walking routes, and a children’s-only novelty race. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard and fellow councillor Mia Shaw got in on the act, both tackling the five-kilometre course. Fun run committee chairman Peter Nichols said organisers were thrilled with the success of the event. “It was a great day, the weather was good and we had about 700 people there, including a lot of children and families.” Mr Nichols said the amount raised would not be known until later in the week. Last year’s event brought in more than $27,000 for Werribee Mercy Hospital’s critical care unit.

Point Cook station push Western metropolitan MP Rachel Carling-Jenkins has renewed the push for a police station to be built in Point Cook. In Parliament last month, Ms Carling-Jenkins called on the minster for police to establish a 24-hour police station in Point Cook. She said residents were becoming worried about safety following an incident in which shots were fired in Adelphi Boulevard on February 19. Two men have been charged in relation to the incident; a 32-year-old man has been charged with reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury and possessing a firearm, and a 27-year-old man with possessing proceeds of crime, possessing ammunition and other drug-related offences. Ms Carling-Jenkins said the shooting “illustrates exactly why” a police station was needed in Point Cook. “The community are getting increasingly
concerned, the community are getting increasingly impatient and the community are agitating for protection,” she said. “Quite clearly they deserve this protection. “It is time for this government to listen to the concerns of the Point Cook community and commit to building the police station.” Ms Carling-Jenkins raised the issue of building a Point Cook police station in October 2015. In 2016, an online petition started by a resident calling for a station in the area attracted more than 2300 supporters. Last month, Star Weekly reported that Victoria Police had confirmed there were no plans to build a third station in Wyndham, either in Point Cook or Wyndham Vale. The Minister for Police Lisa Neville said the government would “always consider requests from police for new or upgraded facilities”. Alesha Capone
Sanctuary school on its way Work is under way on the Sanctuary Lakes South P-9 school. On Monday, Altona MP Jill Hennessy took part in a sod-turning ceremony at the Kirra Way construction site. The school, which will cater for up to 675 students once it is completed, will be built in two stages. The first stage is due for completion next year and the school is set to open during the first term of 2019. More than $13.8 million funding for the school was included in the 2017-18 state budget. The school is being built as part of a multi-school tender with Kane Constructions, which will also build the future Truganina East P-9 and four other Melbourne schools.
“It will be a hub that provides great services and facilities that everyone in the Point Cook community can be proud of,” Ms Hennessy said. While in Wyndham, Ms Hennessy also visited the construction site of a new Scouts and Community Centre, which is being built at the Carranballac P-9 College Boardwalk Campus. For Werribee resident Jaspreet Kaur, budgeting and saving money has become a lot easier, thanks to the Saver Plus program. The free program – an initiative of the Brotherhood of St Laurence and ANZ delivered in partnership with The Smith Family, Berry Street and The Benevolent Society – includes two four-hour sessions in which participants learn about managing their finances. If participants save money within a 10-month period, the program will match the savings dollar for dollar, up to $500, to help with educational costs for them or their children. Lauren Naismith, Saver Plus co-ordinator at The Smith Family in Werribee, said many people who took part in the program were new migrants, refugees or university students.
Ms Kaur, a mother of two, said she enjoyed learning about superannuation as part of Saver Plus, as well as phone apps that show people how much, and where, they are spending. “The program is really good,” she said. “The best thing is learning how to save and how to budget. “We can also share ideas and learn from other parents.” People who participate in Saver Plus must have a health care or pensioner concession card. Tell me about your childhood. I was born in Hackney, London. I lived within walking distance of Lord’s cricket ground. I have a brother 10 years my junior who I used to walk in the pram down to the Paddington railway station to see the trains. We used to turn his pram around and use it as a [cricket] wicket. In September 1939, the outbreak of war, myself, my brother and my mother were evacuated from Dagenham to Norfolk. How did music become a career for you? I started playing the saxophone when I was 14. There was nothing for a boy of my age to be doing, so my parents encouraged me to join the army as a boy musician, which I did. Joan: He joined the band of the East Surrey regiment. Derrick: I spent 11 years with that band, which included three-and-a-half years in Greece with the occupational forces. After coming back to England, I auditioned for Her Majesty’s band, the Scots Guards and I spent six years with them … during which time I was involved in the coronation and Queen Mary’s funeral and football association cup finals at Wembley, the Edinburgh Tattoo – you name it. Then I joined the Metropolitan Police for six months and transferred to Bedfordshire Police, and I was with them for seven-plus years. In 1964 I auditioned for the band of the Royal Australian Airforce [and got in]. We came over on the RMS Canberra and arrived in Australia in November 1964 and lived in Werribee.
You were also a music teacher at a number of schools. Yes, Werribee High School to start with, then I was transferred out to Braybrook Secondary College and Westbourne Grammar School. In 1979, myself and my colleague Roy Hamilton, from Braybrook Secondary College, decided to form a band from schools in the western suburbs. I got my OAM for services to music. I was also Citizen of the Year here in Werribee, in 1980, or something like that. Joan: He also started the Werribee Choral Society, that became known as the Werribee Music Society. They used to put on shows down at Werribee Park. How did you and Joan meet? I was with the Scots Guards and we were playing at the Embankment Gardens in London, down near the river Thames, and Joan and her friend who subsequently married my brother, were sitting in the audience listening. We got chatting afterwards and that was it. We got married in 1957 and have two girls – they’re a bit more than girls now – and a son. There’s eight grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. We’ve created a dynasty. What do you like about Werribee? We like this area because it’s so open, the people in this village are so friendly and we’ve we’ve made a lot of friends. When we came here initially in 1964, there were only about 12,000 people who lived in Werribee.

Labor’s plan to hold the west The Labor Party has spent the past three years running the state. But come November, will they be re-elected? Charlene Macaulay sits down with Premier Daniel Andrews to find out about his plans for the western suburbs. What do you consider to be the biggest issues facing the western and northern suburbs, and what will you do to address those issues if re-elected? I think the biggest issue in the western and northern suburbs, and indeed, right across the state, is jobs. Without employment, everything else in life gets really hard, that’s why we’ve worked so hard every single month that we’ve been in office to create the best part of 330,000 jobs. Whether it’s through our own infrastructure projects – the West Gate Tunnel, the City-Tulla widening project … the $1.8 billion in [Wyndham] roads, school projects like this one [$3.3 million for a new kindergarten built between Sunbury Heights primary and Sunbury Downs College], hospital projects – there’s a long, long list. They all contribute to the number of people that are in work, and they help to set the tone and set some momentum up for us. We’re not without our challenges, of course, and that’s why we’ll keep investing in more schools, kinders as well as continuing to repair the damage that was done to our TAFE system. Continuing that infrastructure, road and rail. Wyndham council has called on the state government to create a new region, called the
Wyndham, Avalon and Geelong City-Rural Region. Is this something the state government is willing to do? We’re always happy to work with our friends and partners in local government to try and address some of these issues. I’ve seen some media coverage of that particular proposal, I’m sure the minister for local government and other ministers in the government have perhaps had more detailed discussions. When you think about the growth that’s occurring out here, the baby boom, the people that are moving in to the local community, the fact that we’re living longer … that’s a vote of confidence in the fact that Victoria is a great place. In light of Wyndham’s population growth – it is now bigger than Geelong – and keeping in mind that Wyndham’s population is expected to grow by a further 74.2 per cent by 2036, what can the area expect from the 2018-19 budget? You can expect us to keep on building, keep on building roads, rail, hospitals, schools, and investing in the skills that underpin jobs. That’s what’s most important, that’s what we’ve done every day we’ve been in office, and that’s what we’ll continue to do. We have not wasted any

interesting that I’m asked questions about serious crime, and then people don’t count those who investigate serious crime as being part of a localised response. The way we have always operated is to give the chief commissioner the recruits he’s asked for. Where they go, that’s entirely a matter for him, as it should be. The difference between our approach … it’s called a staffing allocation model, you take statistics, you take the data of real crime that’s occurred and that helps you to predict where you’ll need extra people, and the types of people you need.

The western suburbs have long held a reputation for being Labor’s heartland, but many residents now fear the west has missed out on much-needed funding because they do not live in marginal seats. What do you say to this? It is true to say that over the years we have often been in the receipt of very strong support in the west of Melbourne and north of Melbourne, and I’m very grateful for that. To suggest, however, that we’ve not invested, or that somehow we’ve not sought to govern for every single Victorian is simply wrong. I’ve had the great privilege of being at the Werribee Mercy Hospital, I know many of the team out there very well, I’ve been there dozens of times. [They’ve had] very significant support to make that a bigger and better hospital. Only a Labor government builds hospitals, simple as that. The budget will have more to say about supporting better health outcomes in the west. I’ve lost count of the number of schools I’ve visited out in the western suburbs that are either completed or nearing completion. Of course, the West Gate Tunnel … a second river crossing giving everyone in the west an option and a choice that they’ve never, ever had. I completely reject the notion that we have not invested in the western suburbs and the northern suburbs, that’s simply wrong. I can absolutely commit to all of your readers that we’ll continue to support the north and the west in lots of different ways – everything from kinders to TAFE, from community health to acute care, roads, rail jobs. Why did the Hoppers Crossing level crossing removal miss the cut, and is there scope for it to be added to this suite of works in the future? When the 50 were chosen, they were chosen on the RACV’s list, they had I think about 30 – we basically did every one of the ones that were on there. Then we went and did our own research from ALCAM [Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model] … to try and find where there had been fatalities, where there had been near misses, where there had been a whole lot of crashes over the years. That got us to 50, that was the number we thought we could afford based on the sale and long-term lease of the port. I’m not able to make any further announcement about numbers 51 or any more beyond 50. I know about this particular crossing, I’ve been very well briefed on it. How to keep baby cool, happy and safe Living without air-conditioning when Melbourne is baking can make adults feel grumpy, sweaty and depleted – but, unlike babies and toddlers, they can take steps to cool down. Littlies are very susceptible to heat stress and, according to Child & Youth Health (www.cyh. com), there are signs and symptoms to watch out for. These include: • Looking unwell. • Floppy limbs and body. • Raised irritability levels. • Drier skin. • Refusing to drink and fewer wet nappies • Fontanelle (soft spot in bub’s head) lower than usual. If these signs are observed, take the child immediately to a GP or nearest emergency department. There are simple ways to avoid this unwelcome scenario and to keep bub cool in the heat: • Maintain fluid intake through extra breast or formula feeding, or small amounts of cool, boiled water.
• Give toddlers frozen fruit (watermelon, orange segments) to suck. • Dress lightly – nappy and singlet is ideal. • Regular sponge-downs with lukewarm (never cool or cold) water – or pop them into a lukewarm bath. • Use a fan, but do not point directly at the child. • Don’t let babies sleep in prams, which can be hot and stifling; remove bassinet pads and liners for better air circulation • Place cool, damp cloths on baby’s body – but regularly check they’re not getting too cold. Try to avoid car travel when temperatures soar, but if it’s absolutely necessary: • Ensure protection from direct sun – use a towel or shade device on car windows. Fine baby skin burns easily and even when outside temperatures aren’t really high car interiors can heat up to dangerous levels quickly – even with air-conditioning on. • Never shade a capsule with a rug or towel – this will restrict air movement and make baby’s environment even hotter. Maribyrnong Sports Academy athletic team has returned from the Simplot games in the US well pleased with the efforts of the six competitors who made the trek to Pocatello, Idaho. Five finalists and a silver and bronze medal shows the effort was very worthwhile. Team captain Jamieson Battistella won bronze in the high jump and Angus Wood picked up silver in the long jump. The Battistella name is well known in local footy circles, with Jamieson’s father David a premiership coach at North Footscray. David was team coach for the US trip, filling in for Darren Clarke, who was on national selection duties on the Gold Coast. Angus is the brother of Bulldogs captain Easton. Their dad, Phil, was a Commonwealth Games long jumper for New Zealand. The other members of the team were Alison Williams, Kelera Ratu, Ella Nickolaus and Bianca Puglisi.

college is also celebrating the achievements of Celeste Mucci, who completed VCE last year and will represent Australia at next month’s Commonwealth Games in the heptathlon. The school has two former students (Celeste and Gronya Somerville) and four current academy coaches involved in the games on the Gold Coast. The facilities at Maribyrnong are the envy of many schools, but it requires the right people in place to achieve results and the school continues to produce fine athletes in a variety of sports.

Porter delivers forward strength for Tigers

Werribee has lured Josh Porter back to the club for the 2018 Victorian Football League season. It will be the key forward’s second stint with the Tigers, where he played 35 VFL games and kicked 38 goals between 2014-16. The 23-year-old is thrilled to re-connect with some former teammates and cannot wait to be part of a new-look Tigers as they become a standalone club for the first time in 19 years. “Obviously, going standalone is quite exciting,” Porter said. “There are a few new faces around the club, so I’m excited to meet the boys, but there are a lot of old faces as well, so it’s good to get back into it.” Porter had an interesting 2017. The Murray Bushrangers product was studying teaching at East Carolina University in the US and also chasing premiership glory with the Wangaratta Magpies in the Ovens and Murray Football and Netball League. He flew home from the US to be part of the Magpies grand final win over Albury, where he
played alongside former Werribee player Ben Speight. It was while Porter was travelling that Werribee coach John Lamont made contact with him about returning to the club. “I came back and saw the feel around the place was really positive,” Porter said. “Having that brand-new facility topped it off, so it was a pretty easy decision.” Lamont was thrilled to get a commitment from Porter. Not only is Porter going to be a key forward on the field, but with three years in the system, he can be a leader within the team. “It’s a great thing, players returning to your club, and the blokes are excited because they realise the type of player that Josh is and what he’s going to bring to the club,” Lamont said. “He’s got strong working relationships, he’s a popular bloke, and 196cm key forwards who are competitive don’t actually grow on trees.”

The Cats were reminded of their place in the pecking order by a Williamstown side with prime position in the race for the north-west group premiership in a heavy 94-run loss in a one-day game at the Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday. Cats captain-coach Greg Kennedy believed his side deserved a better end to the season, but acknowledged that Williamstown was a quality candidate for the flag. Entering the final round, Hoppers Crossing was an extreme long shot to play in the finals. Even if the Cats had won, they would have missed out on the final because of Yarraville’s win over Taylors Lakes. But the Cats travelled to Williamstown knowing a win would give them a sneaky chance of playing in the finals, giving Kennedy the chance to assess his team in a pressure situation. “There was some excitement, nervousness, apprehension – I’m not sure what it was – but we were just not quite on,” he said. Williamstown made an imposing 6-233 off its 45 overs. The Seagulls withstood some quality bowling from Hoppers Crossing, but were helped by the Cats’ sloppy fielding. “We dropped a couple of catches and that was all she wrote against their quality players,” Kennedy said. Brett Smith ended a break-out season for Hoppers Crossing with 3-39 off seven overs. “I couldn’t be happier with his development as a player and he’ll be taking over the mantle next year as our premier fast bowler,” Kennedy said. Hoppers Crossing’s run chase started promisingly, with opener Cameron Nicol (24) and first drop James Hook (26) ticking the scoreboard over at a high rate. Once they were removed, the Cats’ innings fizzled out, with Brandon Diplock (26) making the only significant contribution thereafter. While there’ll be no finals in the firsts, Kennedy insists the club has future-proofed itself. The Cats will play second XI finals and most of their top 22 players are under 23. “There’s not many old blokes like me taking up spots,” he said. “We’re in a good development phase and we’re definitely a club that’s comfortable that we’re doing the right things for our future.”

Werribee ejected as final round goes pear-shaped Werribee’s finals hopes in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west group suffered a dose of double jeopardy on Saturday. The Tigers could not hold up their own end of the bargain, going down to Brunswick by four wickets in a one-day game at Gillon Oval on Saturday. Even if the Tigers had beaten the Wicks, it would have been fruitless for their finals prospects, with Yarraville knocking them out of the race with victory over Taylors Lakes. It was a bittersweet season for Werribee. The Tigers were proud of their unbeaten record between rounds five to 12, but four consecutive losses at the start of the summer came back to bite them. They managed to fight their way back to sit in the top six entering the penultimate round, but a wash-out against Taylors Lakes saw them displaced and they never returned. On Saturday, Werribee posted 9-166 off its 45 overs on the road at Brunswick. Tim O’Brien produced a captain’s knock of 63.
The Tigers suffered a lower order collapse, losing 4-4 at one stage. Brunswick passed the target six down with 27 balls to spare. In Victorian Turf Cricket Association, Werribee Centrals had a strong finish to the north-west A1 season, beating Glenroy outright at Sewell Reserve. The Centurions managed to wrap up first innings points after defending 122. They bowled Glenroy out for 72, taking a 50 run lead into the changeover after a six-wicket haul from Ashley Appleby. Werribee Centrals posted 119 in their second dig with Daniel Williams leading the way with 31. That gave the Centurions a 169-run lead, which they defended impeccably, bowling Glenroy out for 82. This time, it was Luke Allister who did the damage, snaring 5-12. In north west B1, Point Cook claimed a 34-run first-innings victory over Williamstown Imperials at Fearon Reserve South, but still missed out on the finals.
The Warriors declared on 9-157 with Brad Broughton top-scoring with 38. The Imperials could only manage 123, skittled by some good bowling from Scott Maloney (4-14) and David Hicks (3-34). Wyndhamvale, which posted just 80 in the first innings, lost by 96 runs to Williamstown CYMS at Fearon Reserve North. The Falcons batted for time in their second dig, advancing to 6-151 before stumps were drawn on their no-finals season. Seabrook clinched top spot with a 53-run win over Grand United at JR Parsons Reserve on Saturday. Dhavel Patel was brilliant for the Saints with 53 and 3-21. Seabrook will host Gellibrand in a two-day semi-final at Bruce Comben Reserve this weekend. Bellbridge went down by 31 runs to Melton Centrals at Blackwood Reserve. Cody Shanahan will look back on this summer’s track and field season as the one in which he truly felt like he belonged in the elite company of the best under-20 middle distance runners in Australia. The Western Athletics up-and-comer garnered confidence out of his triumph in the Rob De Castella under-20 three-kilometre race at the Zatopek meeting in December and has been impressing ever since. “This year, I’ve realised that I actually can do it, so I’m a lot more positive towards training and racing,” Shanahan said. Shanahan will reflect fondly on that pre-Christmas night at Lakeside Stadium. But the 19-year-old almost never made it to the starting line. The Point Cook resident was struggling with training in the two weeks prior to the race because of an iron deficiency. His coach, Peter Burke, encouraged him to battle through. “I had no energy at training the week leading up, so I almost pulled out the day before,” Shanahan said. “I spoke to my coach and said, ‘I’m not going to make it, I’m done’, but he convinced me to race – and what a decision that was. “The under-20s don’t have a three-kilometre event at the national championships, so this one essentially is the national championship. “It’s the fastest three-kilometre runners under 20 in Australia and two or three from New Zealand, so it was a pretty big win.” The strong running has continued into the new year for Shanahan. He broke the Western
Athletics three-kilometre club record and shaved an incredible 34 seconds off his personal best time in the five kilometres. Shanahan is looking forward to a big cross-country season. The apprentice electrician wants to break into the Victoria open-age cross-country team. After his break-out season in track and field, Shanahan can dream to be among the elite middle-distance running in the nation. “To get up with the elite guys in Australia, it could take three or four years to get to that level,” he said. The future is certainly bright for Western Athletics, if the Victorian Junior Track and Field Championships is any guide. Western claimed nine gold, seven silver and 15 bronze medals and a swag of personal bests and Australian Junior Athletics Championship qualifying times at the three-day Lakeside Stadium meet. On day one, there were gold medals for under-18 triple jumper Jotham Kuku, under-18 5000-metre walker Heath Beveridge and under-18 1500-metre runner Matthew Hussey. Western claimed five golds on day two, including Beveridge, who doubled up in the under-16 3000-metre walk, Aliyah Canepa in the under-17 discus, Kaylee Mangion in the under-15 200-metre hurdles, Mia White in the under-16 2000-metre steeplechase and Kirk Shanahan in the under-20 3000-metre steeplechase. Canepa claimed her second gold medal on day three in the under-17 hammer throw.

West’s boxers step out Boxing will return to the Italian Sports Club of Werribee on Sunday for the 2018 Boxing Cup. Headlining a full day of match-ups will be local fighters Alex Arnold, Eddie Sotero, Lleyton Drozario, Pouya Margharzi and Cooper Morgan. Fighters from local gyms, including Wyndham Community Boxing Club, Balla Brothers, Werribee Kickboxing, PCYC West, Tarneit Boxing and Reffo Kickboxing, will be on the card, along with some from further afield. It could be one of the last chances to see Sotero in action as an amateur. Sotero, a fighter Cowley says “always gives 200 per cent”, is looking to turn professional in the not too distant future. Morgan, described by Cowley as a “savvy technician”, is just 15 and has big raps on him ahead of his amateur debut. Arnold is on the comeback trail from a shoulder injury, but will still prove a tough nut to crack. Drozario is using his bout as a key warm-up event for representing Victoria at the under-age nationals later this month. The first bout will be at 12.30pm. Tickets are available at the door.
