Hospital open for business By Charlene Macaulay Werribee’s newest hospital is up and running. More than two years after the first sod was turned, St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee is open, getting through five surgeries on its first day of operation last Tuesday. Dr Iain Skinner, who advocated strongly for St Vincent’s to build a hospital in the west, had the honour of performing the first surgery.

what’s so important about us being here – that we’re really seen as a local hospital.” The hospital also features the first cardiac catheter laboratory in the west, with the first procedure to be performed this Thursday. From February 26, the hospital will admit expectant mums to its maternity ward and special-care nursery. To date, 50 pregnant women are booked in to have their babies delivered at the hospital between February and September. Ms Flett said the hospital had employed 80 staff, all Wyndham residents, to meet current demand. More positions will be filled as the hospital grows to capacity.

The $95 million hospital includes six operating theatres, 112 beds, a day procedure unit, day oncology/infusion centre, rehabilitation facilities and suites for radiology, pathology and consulting. The hospital offers orthopaedics, urology and general surgery and ear, nose and throat services, as well as sleep studies services. An on-site 80-bed aged-care service opened last June. The hospital’s chief executive and director of nursing, Christine Flett, said it was great to see all the planning come to fruition. “It was a very exciting feeling in the building with all our new staff,” she said. “The whole patient process was very smooth. “We’re growing the business slowly so we can make sure that we have everything going smoothly. “All our patients that are coming to book in are from the local area … that’s

All eyes on the Lunar festival Live performances, traditional costumes, food and fireworks will light up the Point Cook Lunar New Year Festival later this month. The annual festival will be held at the Point Cook Town Centre from noon to 9.30pm on Saturday, February 24. The fireworks will be held at Dunnings Road Reserve towards the end of the celebrations. Tip fight heads to the courts By Charlene Macaulay
The fight to stop the expansion of Werribee tip will reach court in May, after the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) dismissed a Wyndham council bid to drop the case. The Western Region Environment Centre has successfully applied for VCAT to undertake a review of the Environment Protection Authority’s (EPA) decision to approve the expansion. In October, the EPA granted Wyndham council the green light to open four landfill
cells within the boundaries of its Wests Road landfill. The council can build four cells that will each be made up of multiple sub-cells and can reach up to 30 metres above natural ground level – or 44 metres above sea level. This is the height limit enforced on the tip’s existing cells. WREC spokesman Harry van Moorst said giving the council approval for 26 years posed a number of problems. He said residents were concerned about the height of the tip. “At 24 metres high it is an eyesore and produces horrible smells that locals have to put up with,” he said.

“We are especially worried council and the EPA haven’t properly assessed health and safety risks, because they haven’t adequately factored in the impact of letting rubbish build to this height. “Landfills are not supposed to be mountains, but state government policy means there is a growing concentration of rubbish in a few huge
landfills like Werribee, Ravenhall and Wollert. “It’s a matter of environmental injustice that so many sources of pollution are located in the western suburbs. Residents are fed up with continually being taken for granted.” Wyndham council, which owns and operates the tip, unsuccessfully argued against the review, saying there were no valid arguments for the tribunal to consider. Environmental Justice Australia lawyer Chris Atmore said if the expansion plans were upheld, “a whole generation could be locked out of having any meaningful say about the growth of this enormous rubbish tip.”

all year levels from next year onwards, could currently accommodate up to 475 students, but was expected to expand to fit 800 in the next couple of years. She said the school had also received funding for netball courts and a synthetic soccer pitch for use by the school and local community and sports groups. Meanwhile, site preparation works have started on Truganina East P-9 school ahead of its opening for the 2019 school year, with construction to begin later this month. Truganina East, located along Elmhurst
Road in Truganina, will have capacity for 675 students from prep to year 9. Tarneit MP Telmo Languiller said the new school was designed in consultation with local residents. “Truganina P-9 will be more than just a great new local school when it opens next year,” he said. “It will be a hub that provides great services and facilities that everyone in the Truganina community can be proud of.” Charlene Macaulay

The first day of primary school is a big deal – even more so when it’s the first day for students and the school alike. Tarneit Rise Primary School opened its doors for the first time on Monday, welcoming 195 pupils across prep to grade 2, including four sets of twins. Principal Nadia Bettio said the first day was all smooth sailing. “It’s been amazing – seeing the kids come in with their uniforms and smiles, with their parents and grandparents,” she said. Ms Bettio said the school, which will accept
Lead-foot drivers were stopped in their tracks across Wyndham during the Australia Day long weekend in a targeted statewide road policing operation. Operation Amity, which ran between January 25-28 to curb irresponsible driving over the long weekend, detected 256 offences on Wyndham’s roads, including 48 speeding offences. Road Policing Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said the statewide results were incredibly disappointing for Victoria Police. “Over the long weekend we saw far too many people making dangerous and illegal choices by getting behind the wheel when they were either drug or alcohol affected,” he said. “One in every 10 drivers tested furnished a positive result for drugs while 254 drink drivers were caught after more than 106,040 drivers were tested.” Wyndham was one of six areas earmarked as a priority for the operation due to a history of collisions, injuries and volume of trauma. Police also uncovered 58 unlicensed or disqualifed drivers behind the wheel, 14 drink drivers, 22 drivers disobeying traffic signals and seven people using their mobile phone while behind the wheel. Thirty-eight cars on the road were found to be unregistered and 19 cars were impounded as part of the operation.

Station thefts on the decline By Alesha Capone There have been 171 thefts committed at train stations in Wyndham within two years. But there is some good news for commuters, with the number of thefts decreasing between each year-long period, according to data from the state’s Crime Statistics Agency. The figures showed there were 75 thefts at the Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Williams Landing, Werribee and Wyndham Vale railway stations between October 2016 and September last year, compared to 96 thefts during the previous
12 months. Across the two years, Williams Landing station recorded the highest amount of thefts, at 47 offences. There were 42 thefts reported at Tarneit station, 39 at Werribee, 32 at Hoppers Crossing and seven at Wyndham Vale. Out of all the thefts at Wyndham’s train stations, there were 91 bicycles stolen, including 38 from Williams Landing station, 19 from Hoppers Crossing, 15 from Tarneit and 13 from Werribee. Most of the other thefts were recorded as cars getting broken into; motor vehicle theft; people
at stations who were charged with receiving or handling stolen goods; fare evasion; and thefts from retail outlets (for example, from cafes at the train stations). A commuter who used to leave his bike at the Tarneit station every day, Sony Varghese, said his bicycle (a black 2014 edition of the Trek 7.7 FX bicycle) was stolen last month. Mr Varghese said that on January 10, he parked his bike in the Parkiteer cage beside the station – which is accessible via cards issued to cyclists – and caught the train to work. He arrived back in Tarneit at 5pm that
evening and his bike was gone. Mr Varghese said he reported the theft to police. He also contacted Bicycle Victoria, which operates the Parkiteer cages. He said he was told the CCTV camera in the Tarneit cage is a “dummy� and was not actually recording. “In a so-called developed society where the government operates with high taxes from the people, how can I go to work to feed my family and trust services like Parkiteer, which do not even install a camera?� Mr Varghese said. Two years ago, Williams Landing didn’t even have a cafe. Now, the suburb has it’s own dining strip. Cedar Woods, which owns and operates Williams Landing Shopping Centre, has brought in six restaurants over the past 16 months to create a foodie haven, with Wok Wok BBQ, Montezumas Mexican and Dosa Palace among the food offering. Avalon international to take off By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has welcomed the news that international flights will soon be operating from Avalon Airport. AirAsia has announced that it will move its operations from Tullamarine to Avalon later this year, although the exact date is yet to be confirmed. AirAsia X Malaysia is set to operate two flights a day between Avalon and Kuala Lumpur.
Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said the AirAsia move would be “a major catalyst” for investment, jobs growth and tourism in the region. “The development of Avalon Airport will encourage high-density employment industries to locate in Wyndham, as well as growing the region’s visitor economy,” he said. At the weekend, the state government released a statement that said that more than 200 jobs would be created at Avalon thanks to the international service, which is expected to
handle up to 220,000 international passengers a year. The government said construction of an international terminal would create an additional 33 jobs. Once complete, the terminal would be capable of handling 14 tonnes of Victorian fresh produce every day, cementing Victoria’s position as a food export hub. Industry and Employment Minister Ben Carroll said the government would work with Avalon Airport to open up job opportunities for former auto industry workers.
AirAsia X Malaysia chief executive Benyamin Ismail said that the company was proud to be the first airline to operate international flights at Avalon Airport. “Melbourne and Victoria are important markets to us,” he said. “This new service … will provide a significant boost to business and tourism.” Avalon Airport chief executive Justin Giddings said the agreement between Avalon, which is owned by Linfox, and AirAsia was for 10 years.
Royal relay a big hit With a week to go until the Queen’s Baton Relay passes through Werribee, baton bearer Lyn Tout is royally excited. Ms Tout, who was nominated for the honour by her sister, will be the first person to carry the baton through the streets of Werribee next Tuesday, starting at Werribee Primary School. The start point holds special significance for Ms Tout, who is a former student, teacher and principal at the school. “That’s an honour, because I’ve had a long history with Werribee Primary School,” she said. Werribee born and bred, Ms Tout is heavily involved in Wyndham community groups including Werribee Hockey, Hockey Victoria women’s masters and the Ulysses Club. “Other people don’t understand that if you get out there and you give, you actually get more back,” she said. “It also keeps your mind active and it keeps you busy and all those sorts of things, as well.
“I’ve got a hockey family as well as my own family … that’s the relationships you build from your involvement.” Ms Tout, who will dedicate her run to her late mother, Betty Rye, is among 11 Wyndham residents who will carry the Queen’s Baton. The others are Donald Brennan, Bianca Findlay, Margaret Fisk, Gerry Hart, Lauryn Mark, Genevieve Mercieca, Julie Toner, Gerald Greenwood, Catriona Tyrrell and Michael Wells. The Queen’s Baton Relay will begin at 9.10am on Tuesday, February 13, at the front of Werribee Primary School and will finish at Chirnside Park just after 11am. I
t is quite amazing the slant some people take from reading the same article. It is a bit like the joke that gets told and then passed on … by the time it returns to the original teller, it has very little resemblance to its original form as each person adds their own spin. My column last week on the invisible Member for Werribee confused some people into thinking I am a card carrying member of the Liberal Party and a Labor basher. Not true on both counts. Some suggested I was trying to give Labor a platform to rebuke my opinion and thus have free media space to preach their propaganda. Not true either. I have no allegiance to any political party. I have shared my vote around between the parties – both federal and state – over the years. I am a swinging voter. I will correct one inaccuracy from last week’s column: I don’t know who I am going to vote for on November 24 as I don’t know who is running in my seat, so my apologies on that front. The quandary for the major parties these days is how both have gravitated to the centre
of politics and the lines of demarcation are very blurred. It is interesting how some people still have not forgiven the Liberals for the toxic dump. While the Youth Detention Centre stirred up the community, I don’t think it has the long lasting stigma of the toxic dump. The western suburbs ‘Labor-‘til-I-die’ mantra still exists, and probably always will, though I think it is slowly dissipating due to the changing mix of the population. The major parties are head hunting talent and searching for locals to run, which – given the history of the area – is not an easy task. Could an independent actually be successful? I think the government is extremely vulnerable and the current members are on shaky ground. Whether that equates to enough of a swing to make a change I am not sure. We all believe the closer the result, the better for everyone, as all parties have to woo us. We all want fair and reasonable representation, but we all know politics is neither fair nor reasonable. ■

Four youths have been charged with burglary after an incident at the under-construction campus of Western English Language School in Manor Lakes just before 9.10pm on Sunday. Police arrested four youths, all aged under 18, who were bailed.

Police have charged a man and two teenagers after a police car was allegedly struck by another car at the intersection of Boardwalk Boulevard and Dunnings Road, Point Cook, about 4.15am on Friday. A 17-year-old Point Cook male has been charged with conduct endangering person, theft of motor vehicle, unlicensed driving and other offences. Traffic tops the list of concerns
Lollipop lady signs off By Charlene Macaulay After more than three decades helping school children cross the road, lollipop lady Judith O’Keeffe has retired her stop sign. The Wyndham Vale resident finished up at her post at the end of the last school year, 33 years after manning her first crossing at Woodville Primary School. Within a couple of years she was moved to the Ballan Road crossing that serviced Iramoo Primary School and other surrounding schools. That become her permanent spot.
In her younger years, Mrs O’Keeffe was a nurse at the old Werribee hospital, while her husband was an ambulance officer. Once they started to have children, they found it difficult to juggle two demanding jobs and their growing brood, so Mrs O’Keeffe stopped her nursing duties. When their youngest started school, she wanted to get back into the workforce and the lollipop position came up. “Because it was part-time … you finished just after the kids finished school, so you could run them around,” she said. “It fitted in with
family life. I enjoyed it … meeting the children and the mums, and the occasional dad.” The 71-year-old said that with school starting up again last week, thoughts had turned to her former role. “When we had that really hot weather before school had gone back, and I thought, ‘I’m glad I retired’,” she said. “When the weather was pleasant again, I missed the kids and getting out of the house. It will take a while to get used to, I think.” Mrs O’Keeffe was farewelled with a morning tea.
A Wyndham council survey has identified traffic, road maintenance and safety, policing and crime as the issues of most concern to residents. The council’s 2017 annual community survey, released last month, was conducted by Metropolis Research. Researchers doorknocked more than 7000 houses and received more than 1200 responses to the survey. Traffic management was found to be the number one issue in Wyndham. More than a third of those surveyed said traffic management was a matter of concern in Wyndham, compared to 26 per cent in the previous survey. Road maintenance and repairs placed second and safety, policing and crime was identified as the third-highest matter of concern in the community. More than 10 per cent of respondants said they were worried about parking (12.8 per cent in 2016) and 9.4 per cent identified “parks, gardens and open space issues” as an issue (13.2 per cent in 2016). Satisfaction with the council’s overall performance rose from 6.65 per cent (out of 10) in 2016 to 6.69 per cent last year. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said this was the fifth year in which the council had commissioned a survey. “We will use the feedback that residents have given us over the next year to help us better represent the Wyndham community and improve on the services we provide,” Cr Maynard said. Mercy dash passes $1m By Alesha Capone A campaign aimed at raising $2 million to fit-out the new Critical Care Unit at Werribee Mercy Hospital has reached the halfway mark. The Mercy Health Foundation executive director Simon White says $1 million has been raised since the campaign was launched about 18 months ago. Mr White thanked local businesses and community groups that have donated to the cause so far, as well as Werribee Mercy Hospital Critical Care Unit Appeal Committee chairman Peter Mayall. “The support that the hospital has gotten from the community is phenomenal,” Mr White said. “The funds raised will be spent on equipment like cardiac monitors – ventilators which are worth about $75,000 and keep people alive by breathing for them – through to electric beds and resuscitation trolleys.” Mr White said the new Critical Care Unit, which is under construction, was scheduled to open about June or July this year. He said several events had been organised to help raise the remaining $1 million. On Friday, March 2, Werribee Rotary will hold a golf day at the Werribee Park Golf Club. Two days later, on Sunday, March 4, Wyndham Rotary will host a fun run and walk in Werribee, sponsored by Manor Lakes estate. Mr White said an Easter Fair would also be held on Sunday, March 25, at the Victoria University campus in Hoppers Lane, from 11am to 3pm. The event will feature children’s activities, food trucks, stalls, live performances, the Easter Bunny and an Easter egg hunt. Developer loses appeal A developer has unsuccessfully tried to claim compensation from Wyndham council for land required for road widening. Tarneit Projects Pty Ltd, which received planning approval for a 306 lot subdivision for a parcel of land along Hogans Road in Tarneit, took the council to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal recently seeking the removal of a condition within the permit that states land required for the widening of Hogans Road must be transferred to the council at no cost. The developer deemed the condition “unfair”, likening the move to compulsory acquisition without due compensation. However, VCAT member Karina Shpigel upheld the existing permit and refused to remove the condition. Wyndham councillor Josh Gilligan said the decision had set an important precedent – that developers must pay their fair share for infrastructure contributing to their estate development. “It is disappointing that nearly $22,000 of ratepayers’ money was needed to be spent upholding this important precedent for our city,” he said. “It is overwhelmingly clear from our latest community survey residents want to see council working towards planning and delivering local roads alongside state and federal governments to keep pace with our growing population.” Charlene Macaulay

A top-class family affair By Alesha Capone Three generations of the one family are celebrating their special connection to Derrimut Heath Primary School in Hoppers Crossing. The school, which is part of Baden Powell College, opened the gates of its Sycamore Street campus in 1992. Back then, the school had 240 pupils, including a grade 1 girl named Bek. Bek – who is now Mrs Young – grew up and became a teacher at the school. Her own daughter, five-year-old Matilda, started prep at Derrimut Heath this year. But the family connection does not end there – Mrs Young’s parents, Nick and Karen Oliver, were both heavily involved in the school. Mr Oliver spent three years as a school maintenance man and bus driver, while Mrs Oliver was a member of the school’s first-ever Parents and Friends Committee. She also joined a committee that designed the school uniform and went on to become Derrimut Heath’s first public relations officer. Now that her grand-daughter has started at the school, Mrs Oliver has re-joined the Parents and Friends Committee and volunteers in the school library. Mrs Oliver and Mrs Young said they liked the community atmosphere at the school. “It becomes your second family,” Mrs Young said. “I’m really looking forward to Matilda taking part in school concerts – they are some of my greatest memories here.” Mrs Young has taught at the school for almost a decade and is currently teaching grades 5 and 6. As a former vice-captain of the school, she has her badge and grade 6 bomber jacket on display in her classroom.

Have your say on liveability Wyndham council has urged residents to take part in a survey about the area’s liveability, as part of a new campaign being run by councils in Melbourne’s outer suburbs. The Interface Councils group – which represents 10 municipalities, including Wyndham, Melton, Hume and Mitchell – has launched The Liveability Project. Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said part of the campaign was to find out what residents thought of their neighbourhoods. The survey includes questions about social housing and homelessness, affordable housing, public open spaces, access to medical services and schools and the cost of living. Cr Maynard said the Interface Council areas were home to about 1.6 million people. “Recent analysis conducted by Interface Councils has identified concerning statistics that demonstrate the impact of inadequate access to crucial components of liveability,” he said. “This includes a significant disparity in the access residents living in Melbourne’s outer suburbs have to jobs, services, education and other opportunities, compared to the rest of Melbourne.” Cr Maynard said residents in outer suburbs deserved adequate infrastructure and local jobs. Nine years ago, Hsar Thein arrived in Australia after growing up in a refugee camp on the Thailand-Burma border. He was 16, couldn’t speak English and was thrust into a completely unfamiliar society. But with a lot of hard work and sheer determination, it didn’t take long for his talents to blossom. Four years ago, Mr Thein got a horticultural internship at Werribee Park through a partnership program with AMES Australia and the Brotherhood of St Laurence. He impressed Parks Victoria staff with his work ethic so much he was offered a traineeship.

He was recently appointed as a full-time Parks Victoria ranger at Werribee Park. Werribee Park chief ranger and mentor, James Brincat said Mr Thein’s achievement was all the more outstanding because of the challenges he faced. He said like Mr Thein, many refugees had spent their entire childhood in refugee camps and had missed out on the education other children receive. “They basically have to start again when they come to Australia. What you would start at four years old, they start at the age of 16, or 20 years old,” Mr Brincat said. “For a young man to come to a new country, learn a new language, keep up his studies and become a park ranger is an amazing journey. Crafty cafe is not just for kids By Alesha Capone A close-knit group of women run the Craft and Caffeine in Hoppers Crossing, where colourful crochet and other creative items abound. Mother Bianca Hosemans runs the cafe, along with her daughter Keira, sister Kerstin and their friend Lisa Je’Lavell. Ms Hosemans said they opened the cafe about 18 months ago, inspired by her late mother, who loved crocheting and crafts. The cafe offers activities for children and families that include painting, storytimes,
school holiday programs and “smarty pants” science-based craft sessions – usually for the cost of a gold-coin donation. Children can draw in chalk on the pavement out the front of the cafe and play with supplied hula hoops or skipping ropes. Ms Hosemans said the local community had been generous in its support. “We get toy donations, craft materials … people have bought in sugar, kids clothes,” she said. “We have even been given an oven. “We feel overwhelmed with community support and couldn’t have made it this far
without help.” She is in the process of applying for the cafe to become a non-profit organisation. Ms Hosemans said that she, Keira, Kerstin and Lisa all worked other jobs to pay the bills at the cafe. “We all work here because we love it,” Ms Je’Lavell said. Pop up perks up streets Werribee’s pop-up park has received the big tick of approval from locals, with thousands flocking to the free outdoor space in the park’s first couple of weeks. Visitor numbers from Wyndham council reveal nearly 10,000 people have enjoyed the Station Place pop-up park since it was launched on January 19, with more than 5000 flocking to the park for the Australia Day concert. The pop-up park, which will run until February 25, includes a program of music, movies and food on weekends, with live music every Friday night, an outdoor cinema on Saturday nights and a rotating line-up of food trucks on Sunday afternoons. Throughout the week, the park is decked out with deck chairs, beanbags and jumbo lawn games such as chess and Jenga. Wyndham council mayor Peter Maynard said the park was proving to be a massive success.
“It’s been great to see so many people taking advantage of this unique community space, enjoying free concerts, movie nights at the outdoor cinema, Street Food Sundays and much more,” he said. “It’s also fantastic to see the community enjoying the space day-to-day, bringing the kids in for lawn games, taking a moment to relax during the morning shopping or catching up with friends. “The pop-up park is helping to revitalise the Werribee city centre, bringing thousands of people to the area. “Local businesses have also been great supporters of the initiative, with many of the visitors going on to shop and dine with them.” For the full program of events, go to: www. wyndham.vic.gov.au/popuppark Charlene Macaulay

Superintendent Fitzgerald, who joined the police force in 1993, most recently held the role of Superintendent for north-west metro region support services. Over her 25-year policing career she has worked at a number of police stations before taking on roles in the drug squad, the centre for investigator training, the Victoria Police media unit and the coroner’s assistants unit – where she worked alongside the disaster victim identification team following the Black Saturday bushfires. Between 2004-06 she was seconded to the Australian Federal Police’s international deployment group, where she worked in Papua New Guinea. She also completed a law degree while working for the force, at one point working as a prosecutor in Dandenong and Melbourne before returning to front-line policing. She was promoted to Inspector in Knox in 2013, and received the rank of Superintendent in 2016.
Last year, she made the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, receiving the Australian Police Medal for her service. “It’s been an amazing career for me, I’ve had lots of opportunities … my time out at Knox as

Thomas Carr College is getting an upgrade. The school has lodged plans for an $8 million expansion that, if approved, will include a double-storey VCE school building and refurbishment works to the existing year 10 building – which is the oldest building on the school grounds. Principal Andrew Watson said the senior school building would include a university-style lecture theatre to prepare students for tertiary education. “It’s a look at effective transitioning to university-style lectures, and it also provides us with another gathering space for year levels,” he said. “[The expansion] will provide 30 classrooms, a lecture theatre and a commons area for students. “We’re planning for the future, and the demographics tell us there will be a need to accommodate more students in the future. We’re very conscious that there’s going to be a fair amount of development north of us, and that falls into our catchment zone.” Construction for the new VCE building is expected to begin towards the end of 2018, and will be a 12-month build. Refurbishment works on the existing year 10 building will begin in early to mid-2020. The plans follow the recent completion of a $22 million redevelopment at Thomas Carr, which included a new year 7 and 8 building, a trade training centre, a college chapel, the acquisition and refurbishment of a country campus just outside Colac, a state-of-the art performing arts centre and an expanded gymnasium with a show court. A crazy day of hairy hijinks Creative coiffures took centre stage when children at a Werribee early learning centre enjoyed a crazy hair day recently. Youngsters at Kids World, aged from six weeks to six years old, showed off their wild and zany hairdos. One of the centre’s owner-operators, Kieran Armstrong, said Kids World held two to three special theme days every month. The children were treated to another fun day when they took part in activities to celebrate the Basant Kite Festival traditionally held in the Punjab region of India. Which of you is the oldest? Bruno: Which one looks the oldest? Come on! I’m older than him – 69. Romeo: We both look young – I’m 65. Tell me about your childhoods. Bruno: We were both born in Werribee, in the hospital where McDonald’s now is. We started out near Werribee Manor because our parents had a market garden out there, then they sold up and we ended up moving to Stawell Street. We could go out any time of night without having to worry about anything. There were about three or four of us and we’d walk around and go to the footy on Saturday down at Soldier’s Reserve and the pictures when it was at Station Street. Friday nights, we’d go to Centenary Hall – that’s where the Cultural Centre is now – and they’d have dances. Romeo: That was the good old days – you wouldn’t worry about things. We both went to St Andrew’s … I played in the footy grand final [for school] when I was 11. I understand you were one of the first Italian families in the area. How did the locals respond? Bruno: Our dad came here in 1942 because he didn’t want to get enlisted and go to war, then he brought our mother over. We’re from northern Italy, Treviso, which is near Venice.

Back then, we’d cop it a little bit – be called dago, that kind of stuff. Romeo: When we were living in that farm, there were Aussies living beside us and they’d call us wogs and that sort of stuff. And guess who one of those kids were? [She ended up being] my wife, Maree.

Market Road, Werribee, made slippery by light rain on Sunday evening, claimed two more vehicles within a half-hour period. The road, especially from Manly Street to Cottrell Street, has been the scene of many single-car crashes over the year.
The Werribee Traders’ Association and two Werribee shopkeepers have objected to the establishment of an amusement parlor in the central business district because of fears that drug abuse, vandalism and general nuisance will flood the area. Acriflavine shapes as potential hero in superbug battles Very few baby boomers wouldn’t have heard of acriflavine or been treated with it as a child. Made from coal tar, the yellow-brown lotion was once applied to all the dings and grazes of kids – but it first came into use during World War I. Identified as an antiseptic by German scientists in 1912, acriflavine was used on soldiers to treat wounds and kill parasites that cause sleeping sickness – a potentially fatal tropical disease. In fact, the medical world agrees, acriflavine saved uncountable soldiers’ lives. Recent study results released by the Hudson Institute of Medical Research in Clayton reveal that acriflavine – off the radar for at least 50 years – is potentially stepping again into a big-time saviour role.

Even children with coeliac disease and gluten sensitivities who eat gluten-free products can benefit from using them sparingly, as often the ingredients used to make these products more palatable include a host of preservatives, thickeners, colours and food acids that can cause food reactions. To lessen the body burden some say is created by these additives, go natural with this quick dinner idea. A healthy meal is good for the whole family, and any leftover burgers make a great addition to school lunchboxes. CHICKEN BURGERS AND CHIPS: 500g chicken mince 2 carrots finely grated 4 eggs Salt and pepper to taste Coconut flour to absorb excess fluid Half a zucchini, finely grated 5 large white potatoes Sweet chili sauce, sour cream and chives (to serve) Coconut oil for cooking

METHOD: 1. Pre-heat oven to 200C. 2. Chop the potatoes into chips, throw them in a baking tray, smother with coconut oil, then sprinkle with salt. Let the chips cook for 20 minutes in the oven, shaking the tray occasionally so they cook evenly. 3. Mix chicken mince, carrot, zucchini, eggs and salt and pepper in bowl until combined.
4. Add a little coconut flour at a time and combine until you get a consistency that is malleable enough to create burger shapes 5. Heat a large pan on medium heat and add a tablespoon of coconut oil and melt, covering the whole pan surface. 6. Roll each burger in coconut flour (smaller ones are a good idea for kids, larger ones for grown-ups) and lightly fry until golden brown then flip, adding more oil if needed. The burgers are ready when they bounce back when you firmly press on the centre.

SPORT Cat signing a big win for Werribee Tigers Werribee Football Club has bolstered its big man stocks with the signing of former Geelong VFL player Jack Berry. Berry, 22, is the second ruckman with VFL experience to sign with the Tigers in the new year, following former North Ballarat Rooster Nick Nott. Berry, who stands at 198 centimetres, spent most of his Cats career playing in the development league, but played three games in the top side last season. The Leopold-aligned tall showed his potential with 46 hit-outs in a game against Coburg in round 11 last season. Berry is hoping to further his football career with Werribee. “It’s a good opportunity down here and I’m looking forward to it,” Berry said. “The [Avalon Airport Oval] facility is definitely enticing and the stand-alone aspect is very exciting. It’s a new beginning and you can kind of put your own stamp on things.”

In other player news, Werribee has re-signed defender Jack Williams for a third season. Williams missed out on his chance of a promotion to the senior side last season after a mid-season adductor injury, but impressed in the backline during 10 development league games en route to taking out the team’s best and
fairest award. The 22-year-old will be hoping to add to his three senior games played in 2016. “It feels good to be back on board,” he said. “It was a bit of a limited opportunity last year. I got injured after five rounds, missed the middle part of the year … I missed out on senior selection, but had an all-right year in the twos. “I really want to step it up this year and try to break into this senior side and keep my spot.” Williams’ first opportunity to claim a senior berth will come on the practice match circuit. Werribee’s pre-season schedule includes games against Williamstown at Deakin University in Waurn Ponds on March 10, Geelong Cats at GMHBA Stadium on March 16 and Essendon at Avalon Airport Oval on March 24. at the Western (Whitten) Oval is back for 2018 and that is good news, even if it is still February. I am not a big fan of the way footy has eaten into the calendar at the expense of other sports. Footy to me is a winter game and that means a late March start at best. I have no problem with footy being the No.1 sport – but I’d prefer that not be at the expense of every other sport. The AFLW will continue to grow and will eventually be played at the same time as the AFL. That will be a very interesting time for the game’s hierarchy.

Burton boys have been making news in the past few weeks, both on and off the field. Matthew Burton has moved into the role of football operations manager with the Calder Cannons after a few years with the Werribee Football Club. Matt’s older brother, Jono, has been making his mark on field for the Werribee Cricket Club with both bat and ball. After an injury interrupted start to the season, he weighed in with the bat last week against Kew in VSDCA north-west, scoring 55 after coming in as a nightwatchman, and then claiming a hat-trick in the last over of the day to finish with 3-1 from two overs.

will not roll out the line about money ruining local football again, but Albion Football Club hosted a debt demolition day last Saturday. The club posted on social media that it was up against the wall and called on supporters to get behind it for the coming season. I hope the day went well and money was raised through the raffles, auction items and appearance by former Collingwood star Nick Maxwell. But why is the club against the wall again? Will this be the last time this kind of event is needed? Both questions deserve to be answered – not to me, but to the club faithful. And not just by Albion, but by every suburban club in financial trouble. There are a few.

In the last over of day one against Yarraville in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association at Chirnside Park on Saturday, Burton had the fans in raptures as he produced a hat-trick with the first three balls of the over, giving his side a huge boost going into the second day. Tigers captain-coach Tim O’Brien could not believe what he was seeing with the time clock moving towards 6pm as Burton turned an OK day into a special one for the Tigers “I’ve never played in a game where a hat-trick was taken – that’s the first one,” O’Brien said. It was an incredible way for the day’s play to finish considering much of the afternoon was dominated by the batsmen. Werribee posted 9-233 declared, but faded late on. At one stage the Tigers were cruising at 113 without loss, courtesy of a superb opening
stand between Adam Alifraco (75) and Matt Dean (36). Alifraco and Dean both fell with the score on 113, but O’Brien (66) and Shaun Dean (20) combined for a 72-run partnership to take the score to 3-185. That’s when things got tricky for Werribee, and they lost their last six wickets for 48 before the declaration. All this happened while Yarraville was producing a slow over rate. The Eagles would barely have got through 70 overs had the Tigers decided not to declare. But O’Brien made a bold decision to have a dip at snaring some early Eagles wickets with the final three overs of play. He never expected to have Yarraville in trouble on 3-2 at stumps. “If we had’ve batted an extra three minutes, the game would’ve been called off at 68 overs,” O’Brien said. “I thought with nine down, we might as well have a couple of overs at them and it panned out alright for us. I don’t think Yarraville expected it. “It sort of threw them out a bit, so it was to our advantage.”
It leaves Yarraville with just seven wickets in hand to score a further 232 runs. Earlier in the day, Alifraco produced his best knock of the summer with 75. Alifraco’s knock could have massive implications for the finals’ chance of both sides with the Eagles sitting seventh and the Tigers a game back in ninth. “He’s got the ability, so hopefully we can see that more often from him,” O’Brien said While Werribee has the momentum following Burton’s hat-trick, O’Brien knows there is still plenty to play out in this contest. “[Matthew] Harrison and [Matthew] Love are their two best batsmen and are still yet to bat, so it’s still game on,” O’Brien said. Meanwhile, Hoppers Crossing will need to bowl to its maximum capabilities if it is defend a small total of 185 against Preston at Preston City Oval. Trent Said was the standout for the Cats with 64, while Will Partington-Gardner chimed in with 29. Brett Smith took a late wicket for the Cats to have Preston on 1-3 at stumps.

Armstrong’s feat of clay Shooting sensation Thomas Armstrong has put the icing on the cake of a stellar sporting year, being adjudged the 2017 Don Deeble Rising Star winner. Armstrong was taken aback when his name was read out as the recipient of the prestigious award, named in honour of the late Don Deeble, one of Australia’s greatest baseballers, a pioneer of his sport and a product of Sunshine. The award recognises sporting talent under the age of 21 from Melbourne’s west, including five council areas, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton and Wyndham. Armstrong, from Plumpton, described it as a huge honour to join a list of recipients that includes internationally renowned sports people such as athlete Morgan Mitchell and basketballers Dante Exum and Rachel Jarry. Armstrong was quick to realise the sporting talent in his company when he arrived at the Allegra Function Venue in St Albans on Wednesday night. “There was such a big range of athletes and sports represented,” Armstrong said. “There was AFL top draft picks, girls that have represented high levels at a number of

Hoppers has rebounded after a tough fortnight to end its losing skid at two in the Bowls Victoria division 2. A return-to-form Hoppers beat Maribyrnong Park 84-74 on the road on Saturday. The game was a tight one with the rinks split, but a big win for Billy Russell (22-11) and Denis Hewitt (25-20) were enough for Hoppers to win by 10 shots. “We had to show all our fighting spirit as the home side managed to nose in front by one shot late in the day,” Hoppers skipper Colin Ravenscroft said. “We withstood the challenge and drew away at the end.” There is just 10 more days until the start of the National Premier League 2 west season. Armstrong, a Werribee Victorian Clay Target Shooting Club member, took his talents to Europe later in the year, where he triumphed in the Italian Cup trap competition – an Olympic discipline – then took out a junior world title at the World Universal Trench shooting championships in France by a narrow two targets. “Every shot counts,” Armstrong said. “It all comes down to the practice we put in, we work on specific targets. It’s also a real credit to mum and dad for taking me everywhere and giving me the opportunity to train on all these different grounds and in different scenarios.” Armstrong is already hard at work in
Charles Thompson, the man who led the Werribee Giants to a Baseball Victoria club championship less than 12 months ago, has been fired as head coach. Thompson was given his marching orders on Thursday, a day after the Giants embarrassing loss to previously winless Ballarat City Brewers. Assistant coach Shane Haywood will take over as caretaker until the end of the season. Haywood was in the dug out for the Giants’ 8-4 win over Doncaster Dragons at President’s Park on Saturday. Giants president Ben Bavdek said results this season had been unacceptable for a club that had become accustomed to being involved in the finals. “The club had two choices – you either sit down idly and hope that it gets better or you be pro-active and try to fix the situation,” Bavdek said. “We decided it’s best to jump on it now and see if we can steady the ship and move from there. “We have been too successful in the last six years to not notice when you’re sitting in the middle of the pack. “We thought, ‘This is the right time, we’ve got four weeks left … let’s see if we can get something out of it and grow a few leaders internally’.” Werribee’s slide will see it miss this season’s division 2 finals. The Giants went into the season with dreams of earning promotion, but were flat as a tack from the outset. How much of the blame can be attributed to Thompson or the under-performing players is up for debate, but the coach takes the fall more often than not. Bavdek said the “positives have far outweighed the negatives” in Thompson’s tenure at the club, but the message was no longer getting through to the players. “We’ve had a poor season and you can see that,” Bavdek said. “Sometimes the coach can do everything he wants to do, but it just doesn’t work, it just doesn’t gel on the field. ‘CT’ did everything we asked for, but at the end of the day, it didn’t seem to be working this season. “Sometimes, the same voice – after a certain amount of time – just bounces off deaf ears. “We thought, ‘Do we hold off or do we try to throw a rally together and get something going’. “We play 12 months of the year – we get to the end of the season and two weeks later we’re playing again [in the winter season] – so we don’t have the luxury of shutting it down, putting our ducks in a row and getting it right.” Werribee’s tumble from division powerhouse

“They had the camera crews down there for WIN television and decided to film the game, which wasn’t great for us. “There’s always a catalyst for change at our club and that might have been it. “We’re not afraid to make those big calls when you need to.”
