Summer Slam ban call By Charlene Macaulay The South Sudanese Australian Summer Slam is unlikely to return to Wyndham this year, with Wyndham council calling on its organisers to find a new venue for the event. In a statement posted to Facebook last week, Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard said many residents had contacted the council with safety concerns stemming from the recent basketball tournament, which was held at Eagle Stadium between December 17 and 19. The Summer Slam was linked to the trashing of a rented Airbnb house in Werribee on December 20, with four girls from Dandenong renting out the Attunga Grove property so they could attend the event.

“Whilst council is not responsible for policing and the resourcing of crime prevention and enforcement generally, council has considered the role we can play in response to these concerns,” Cr Maynard’s statement read. “In light of the complaints about the antisocial behaviour that occurred in areas surrounding Eagle Stadium following the basketball tournament, we will be meeting with the operator of the Stadium, Victoria Police, Basketball Victoria and tournament organisers to suggest that this tournament not be held at the venue in the future. “This is a disappointing outcome as the event provides a positive experience for members of our South Sudanese community however the conduct of persons not necessarily connected with the tournament have prompted this response. “Importantly our youth services team will also be increasing our outreach work to provide support to at-risk young people in our community. Council will also continue to work with local police and the state government to ensure that adequate resources are dedicated to community safety.” The decision sparked a mixed reaction on social media, with many residents taking to the Star Weekly Facebook page last week to praise or condemn the move. Lee-Ann wrote that it was “about time an organisation stood up for the community” and Len concurred, writing: “It is the right decision. Any group causing repeated issues need dealing with”.

New push for Point Cook police By Charlene Macaulay The push for a third – and possibly fourth – Wyndham police station has been renewed. Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt said a police station in Point Cook was vital to service the needs of the growing community. “Point Cook is a major growth area and we must show foresight now by investing in a new police station, with the necessary police to operate it, before the booming growth outstrips the ability of local resources to keep up,” Mr Gatt said. Wyndham councillor Tony Hooper said he
was a strong advocate for a Point Cook police station, and would also like to see another police station in Wyndham Vale. “We know that the [Werribee] police station is getting upgraded and that’s great … but that doesn’t take away the broader needs. “The growth of Wyndham is projected to go nuts out that [Wyndham Vale] way. “Given that we know where the growth is going to be … I’d hate to see a repeat of what Point Cook and other areas are going through and actually start talking about a cop shop in that area now, well before it’s needed, so that in 10 or 20 years’ time when it eventuates, the land

has been put aside, the budget’s been put aside, the officers have been trained.” The desire for a Point Cook police station has been a hot topic in recent years, with Western Metropolitan MP Rachel Carling-Jenkins raising the issue in Parliament in October 2015, and a 2016 online petition attracting more than 2300 supporters.

Telia Coverdale has taken four years to grow and maintain her dreadlocks – now she’s getting ready to shave the lot off for the Leukemia Foundation. The 18-year-old will shed her mane in a bid to raise at least $2000 for blood cancer research. She will get the clipper treatment from her hairdresser sister on March 17. The World’s Greatest Shave is the foundation’s major annual fundraiser with many participants around the west getting the chop for charity. Telia hopes the money she raises will help give families facing blood cancer the emotional and practical support they need, as well as help drive vital research. “Shaving my hair is something I always considered doing, however I never thought I would grow the courage to actually go ahead with the idea,” she said. “After four years of my beloved dreads I thought that maybe it’s time to let go – and what better way to do it then raise money for a worthy cause? “I’ve seen many families close to my own have horrible experiences with cancer and leukemia, so I thought if I can make a difference, small or big, it is worth it. “I think if we all adopted this mindset to issues in society we could support one another. “That’s why I have chosen to do so – so that maybe others can grow the courage to do things that support organisations like the Leukemia Foundation. “The response people have shown already is overwhelming.” Telia’s friends and family will have opportunities to cut off one of her dreadlocks in return for a donation. The calls come after a Star Weekly report that revealed Wyndham has less police on the beat now than it did in September of 2015. Wyndham councillor and safer communities portfolio holder Kim McAliney said the council did not have a formal position on a third police station being in Point Cook, but was lobbying the state government for a family violence support safety hub within Wyndham. “Positioning a family violence hub here in Wyndham would represent an opportunity for the government to allocate resources where they are most needed,” she said.

The Western Treatment Plant could soon have its own regional art gallery under a Wyndham council plan to boost tourism. The council has asked for $1.25 million in federal government funding as part of the 2018-19 Commonwealth budget to pay for stage one design works for a Wyndham Regional Art Gallery. According to the council’s pre-budget submission, a recent assessment report found that a dedicated regional art gallery in the Western Treatment Plant’s refurbished discovery centre would provide a “major cultural tourism destination” and have wide economic and social benefits for both Wyndham and the western suburbs. “Repurposing the discovery centre would deliver council’s aspiration for a regional art gallery more quickly and more cost effectively than building on a greenfields site,” the submission stated. Wyndham council city life acting director Georgie Hill said the council could not give more details on the proposal until a feasibility study was completed. “Once the feasibility study is complete, council will formulate a funding strategy that includes partnerships with state and federal government, together with council’s own investment,” Ms Hill said. “Our current Wyndham Art Gallery at the Wyndham Cultural Centre has attracted artists and projects from Wyndham, across Australia and across the world. However, a municipal gallery the size of ours can only do so much. An expanded space would create opportunities for greater participation.”

Leakes Road work cops a fine By Charlene Macaulay A contractor has been fined for carrying out unapproved road works in Laverton North after complaints from the public. Leakes Road, near Interchange Drive, was reduced to a single lane in each direction during the work. VicRoads said it received a number of calls complaining about the road works, but was not in a position to act, with the road falling under the jurisdiction of Wyndham council. Wyndham council city economy and liveability director Kate Roffey said the council

had been made aware of the work last week. “Council was made aware of works taking place without our approval near Leakes Road and Interchange Drive in Laverton North earlier this week,� she said. “Upon visiting the site, council officers stopped the works and issued the contractor with an infringement. The contractor has since been able to meet the
requirements of council and the works will proceed.� The council would not disclose how much the contractor was fined. Leakes Road is one of eight “high-priority� roads involved in duplication and widening in a $1.8 billion state government roads package. It will be duplicated between Fitzgerald and Derrimut roads to provide two lanes each way. Sections of Dunnings, Palmers, Derrimut, Dohertys, Forsyth and Duncans roads are also in line for duplication and widening as part of the package.

Organiser Tessa O’Brien said people could donate up to five good quality items, and are then able to have their choice of five clothing items donated by others. She stressed that the items must be in as-new, or gently-used, condition. The morning will also include workshops and tips to help people get the most out of their clothing. “They’ll learn some styling tips,â€? Ms O’Brien said. “They’ll learn some tips to help them with sustainable fashion in the future ‌ we’ll also have a mending expert there as well. “The idea is that people come and do these different activities and at the end we’ll have a
big swap. You’ll get tokens for the items that you bring in, and then you can pick what you want.� “People on average only wear about 40 per cent of their wardrobe. We have so many clothes that are sitting in our cupboards that we’re not using – and that other people could be wearing and loving.� Wyndham environment and sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said the impact of fast-fashion meant that 100 million tonnes of textiles and leather goods go to Australian landfills each year. MP expense saga ends
By Charlene Macaulay A Werribee man has paid tribute to a high school friend by fundraising for her young family following her sudden death. Werribee’s Alysha Beek died earlier this month after contracting bacterial meningitis. The 28-year-old leaves behind her eight-month-old son Anakin and her husband, Daniel, whom she married a year ago. Her death comes one year and one day after her father died. Upon hearing the news, Evan Gower, who went to Werribee Secondary College with Alysha, set up an online fundraiser to help out the family, and has raised more than $7500 in the past fortnight. He has also arranged for a new fridge for the family. Mr Gower said while he and Alysha hadn’t been close after high school, her death hit close to home. “I felt like I had to do something, something more than pass on my condolences, to help the family out,” he said. “I just wanted to raise the money to either alleviate the funeral costs, or whatever Daniel wanted to do with the money – whether it’s to get things for Anakin as he gets older, because they grow up so fast, or day care fees for when Daniel has to go back to work. “A lot of people in Werribee knew Alysha, she grew up in Werribee and spent her whole life here.” Mr Gower thanked all the local businesses and residents who have helped to raise money for the Beek family. Police investigations into MPs Telmo Languiller and Don Nardella have been dropped due to a lack of evidence to lay criminal charges. Mr Languiller and fellow Labor politician Mr Nardella both claimed a taxpayer-funded second residence allowance for living outside of their electorates while residing on the Bellarine Peninsula. Mr Languiller resigned as speaker and Mr Nardella as deputy speaker of Victoria’s Parliament last February after The Age revealed they had claimed tens of thousands of dollars to live in the coastal towns. Mr Languiller claimed about $38,000 to live in Queenscliff instead of his Tarneit electorate. The second residence allowance is intended for country MPs who maintain an address in Melbourne. Police have written to the opposition to say no charges will be laid, due to a lack of evidence. “The investigation has determined that there is insufficient evidence to support any criminal charges and that there are no reasonable prospects of a successful prosecution if either member were to be charged,” Assistant Commissioner Stephen Fontana wrote. Both MPs will retire at the November election. Mr Languiller said he welcomed the police decision. “I look forward to continuing as the member for Tarneit in the Parliament and delivering for the people of the western suburbs,” he said. – The Age

The total value of house sales in Point Cook across a 12-month period has ranked the area with prestigious Melbourne suburbs such as Brighton, Toorak and Kew. According to a report from the property data analysis company CoreLogic, the total value of all home sales in Point Cook between September, 2016, and September, 2017, was more than $581 million, making it the sixth-highest in Melbourne for the period. There were 972 property sales in Point Cook within that timeframe, valued at $581,836,407. Brighton placed first on the CoreLogic list with more than $835 million in sales, followed by Toorak with $763 million. Glen Waverley, Kew and Mount Waverley rounded out the top five areas, with Point Cook the only suburb from Melbourne’s west to feature in the top 10. The median house price in Point Cook was $627,010, compared to the median prices of $4.76 million in Toorak and $1.34 million in Glen Waverley. The director of Sanctuary Lakes and Point Cook Real Estate, Fadi Saad, said he believed that one of the reasons behind Point Cook’s high sales total was its location in Wyndham, one of the fast-growing municipalities in Australia. “There would be a higher volume of transactions there, equating to more value,” he said. “I could say that in Point Cook, demand has almost outweighed supply in the past 12 months,” he said. “People are branching out from the inner west to the outer west, realising they can get more value for money.”
Five-year-old Eva and her big sister Milena will mark a special occasion next week. Eva will start prep at Point Cook P-9 College and Milena will begin year 12 at Point Cook Secondary College. Eva said she was excited about starting school, while Milena said she was looking forward to seeing her friends after the summer holidays. Their mother, Diana Danilin, believes Eva will handle her first day of school with aplomb. “She’s very confident and very curious,” Ms Danilin said. “When she went to kindergarten, the moment the doors opened she went straight to the play station. I had to ask if she could come back to give me a hug.” Milena has a head-start on her year 12 studies after completing the VCE subject of psychology last year. The 17-year-old said she was trying to be organised, keeping a timetable on her bedroom wall to keep track of weekly tasks – including her job at a restaurant. She said she was not too worried about the pressures of year 12. “I feel like it will be intense, but manageable at the same time,” she said. here have been a number of developments in the past week that have baffled me, and I was hoping that by sharing them with Star Weekly readers we might together make sense of them. My news feed this week has been filled with the following: 1. Local state members Don Nardella and Telmo Languiller will not face charges from police because there is insufficient evidence to prosecute. 2. Indian immigrants want to embrace their new homeland but want their own cultural centre built in their chosen area because it has Indian shops, clothes and restaurants. 3. Community anxiety grows but police numbers dwindle. Off the top #1 – Both Nardella and Languiller agreed to pay back funds. So was that just done as a gesture of good faith, not because they had done the wrong thing? I am sure a Collins Street lawyer understands this process, but for the rest of us it is mind boggling. Whoever said the law is an ass was spot on. #2 – Why migrate if you want to live in a
community that is exactly like where you came from except more affluent? It is vital that new residents feel comfortable and safe, but as a society we have to start knocking down social barriers, not building or hiding behind new ones. This is certainly not just confined to the new Indian residents but a broader problem across many ethnic groups. Let’s identify the problem areas of assimilation and fix them. #3 – As Peter Finch said in the movie Network: “We are not going to take it anymore.” It is a state election year and action equals votes. How anyone let there be fewer police on the beat now than four years ago defies common sense with the booming population in our city. We want more police, we need more police – everyone knows it. So make it happen. Bureaucracy is the enemy of common sense and action. We become weighed down in a sea of written and spoken words and nothing gets done, no change is effected and no satisfactory outcomes achieved. It’s a waste cycle – it wastes our time, our opportunities and our energies. Let’s put a stop to it. ■

A Werribee man has been charged following the theft of donations from a church in Avondale Heights on January 12. The 57-year-old Werribee man has been charged with two counts of theft and one count of burglary, and has been bailed to appear at the Werribee Magistrates’ Court on June 13.

Our cannabis growing suburbs By Alesha Capone Police have recorded more than 90 cannabis cultivation offences in Wyndham in almost three years. The state’s Crime Statistics Agency last week released a list of 77 suburbs and towns where Victoria Police laid 10 or more cannabis cultivation charges between January, 2015, and September last year. The data included 97 offences related to cannabis cultivation in Wyndham, including 26 offences in Point Cook.
There were 18 cultivation offences recorded in Tarneit, 15 in Truganina, 14 in Wyndham Vale, 13 in Hoppers Crossing and 11 in Williams Landing. Deer Park topped the state with 38 drug cultivation offences. A Victoria Police spokesman said cannabis “crop houses” could be found in both suburban and rural areas. “Police have cannabis disruption operations statewide, not particularly focusing on any one specific area,” he said. In the middle of last year, detectives from
the Altona North Divisional Response Unit charged seven people after a number of warrants were executed in the west, with police seizing a large quantity of cannabis. The arrests related to an ongoing investigation into the alleged commercial cultivation of cannabis in the western suburbs. Seven men, including five from Point Cook, were arrested and charged with cultivating a commercial quantity of a drug of dependence. Another Point Cook man, aged 28, was arrested and charged with cultivation of a large commercial quantity of a drug of dependence.
All of the men were remanded to appear in court at a later date. A separate operation known as Operation Snagging, which took place from August to October, also targeted the cultivation and trafficking of cannabis. Investigators executed warrants at 19 residential addresses in the Newport, Point Cook, Tarneit, Hoppers Crossing, Wyndham Vale, Werribee, Seabrook, Braybrook and Altona North areas. A total of 1530 cannabis plants, 18 electrical bypasses, a shotgun and a quantity of ammunition were allegedly seized.
A focus on community Tarneit man Vinay Mote is flying high after winning a major prize in the Wyndham Photo Competition. Mote’s picture of a wattlebird at Camelot Park in Tarneit won the “most shared” and “professional portrait” categories of the contest, which was run by the Rotary Club of Laverton Point Cook. Twelve images from the competition, which attracted a total of 170 entries, have been published in the club’s 2018 fundraising calendar. Mote won $500 in the contest, which he has donated to charity. He said because the photo award was local, he decided to give $250 to the Mercy Hospital Foundation, to help out patients at Werribee Mercy Hospital. Mote donated another $250 to Birdlife Australia, the nation’s largest bird conservation organisation.
“I think I am community-minded and I like to volunteer and donate and give back to society whenever I can,” he said. Mote said his love of photography started during childhood, when he would photograph weddings and travel with a film camera. Nowadays, he works as a professional wildlife and nature photographer. He also teaches photography and takes people on overseas photo tours in countries such as Kenya. “I aim to teach people photography, to be at one in nature and care for the planet,” Mote said. Speed, safety moves on freeway By Alesha Capone VicRoads will conduct a speed limit review of the Princes Freeway from Werribee to Winchelsea, as a campaign to raise the limit from 100/kmh to 110/kmh gains momentum. South Barwon MP Andrew Katos, who has been advocating on the issue for several months, is conducting an online survey asking motorists if they would like change to be implemented. So far, more than 80 per cent of respondents support raising the speed limit.
VicRoads acting south-western regional director Emma Miller-Olsen said a speed limit review of the Werribee to Winchelsea section of the freeway – which is about 55 kilometres long – would be undertaken once the roll-out of flexible safety barriers was finished. The state government is spending $450 million to install the wire rope barriers along 20 of Victoria’s high-risk roads in a project that has been designed to reduce off-road accidents. The installation of the barriers is due to
finish by the end of next year. The Princes Freeway speed limit review would not begin until then. VicRoads has previously undertaken crash-risk modelling of a speed limit increase – from 100/kmh to 110/kmh – on the Princes Freeway between Werribee and Corio. The modelling has shown that an increase in the speed limit could potentially result in a 30 per cent increase in fatal and other serious injury crashes. Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the state
government had asked VicRoads to undertake a speed limit review on all roads where the flexible safety barriers were installed to enhance the continued safety of motorists and “address community concerns”. “Speed directly contributes to at least 30 per cent of all deaths on Victoria’s roads,” Mr Pallas said. “For this reason, maximum speed limits exist and are enforced throughout Victoria.” Go to andrewkatos.com.au/freeway110/ for details of the survey.
Riding the health cycle It’s hard to imagine it now, but two years ago Darren Graham weighed in at 185 kilograms and had a number of health concerns. Fast-forward to today and the Tarneit man is in fighting fit shape thanks to a low-carb, healthy fat diet, which prompted him to jump back on his bike and get active. “I’m off all medications now, for the first time in 20 years,” he said. “After about a month or so, all my pains and arthritis went away. After I saw the science was working, it went from there.” Mr Graham said he started cycling part-way to and from work in the city, gradually increasing the distance as his fitness improved. He also does longer rides at weekends with the Wyndham cycling group and easily racks up more than 100 kilometres on his bike each week. “I decided to get a team of guys together from work and did Ride Daylesford, which was
a 55 kilometre ride, and I did a half-marathon … and I thought, what’s next?” It turns out, what’s next is a 65-kilometre bike ride along the Great Ocean Road. This weekend, Mr Graham will be joining Tour de France winner Cadel Evans and thousands of others riding the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, where he hopes to rub shoulders with the cycling great. Father Frank calls it a day By Alesha Capone After 46 years in the priesthood, Father Francis ‘Frank’ Buhagiar is set to retire. On Wednesday, January 25, Father Buhagiar will celebrate both his last official day as a priest and his 75th birthday. Father Buhagiar was ordained as a priest in 1971 in his village of birth, Siggiewi in Malta, after studying at the University of Malta and Corpus Christi College in Glen Waverley. He has been based at St Andrew’s Catholic Church in Werribee since June 2000. He also served in the parish between 1976 and 1980.

Father Buhagiar said he enjoyed the fellowship in St Andrew’s, including social events such as the annual parish fete, its tennis club and the St Andrew’s Theatre Company. “I’m very proud of the fellowship here in Werribee, it brings people together on a social level and people of all different cultures together,” he said. “The whole idea is we don’t just pray, we have a sense of community.” Father Buhagiar said during his time in Werribee, he had helped to oversee the refurbishment of the St Andrew’s church, parish office and presbytery, which was established in 1898. He said he was “very grateful” to the maintenance team and volunteers who helped on all these projects.

The Chirnside Masonic Lodge and Freemasons Foundation have made a generous donation to the Mercy Health Foundation. The lodge recently presented the Mercy Health Foundation with a cheque for $5000. Lodge secretary Tim Harris said the money came from a beneficial account to which members donate. Mr Harris said the lodge approached the Freemasons Foundation, asking it to contribute. The foundation added another $5000 to the funds, bringing the total donation to $10,000. The master of Chirnside Masonic Lodge, Ray Bruerton, said the money would be used to purchase four ECG machines for the new Critical Care Unit at Werribee Mercy Hospital. Last year, Wol took part in the True North Basketball program, a joint initiative of the North Melbourne Football Club, Victoria Police, Basketball Victoria and Rotary that combines sport with future employment preparation. It was there that Wol was recommended for the Wyndham Leaders of the Future program, taking on the 96-kilometre Kokoda Track with police and other chosen teens. He’s sports mad, starting out as a soccer player before moving on to basketball, playing with the Iramoo Basketball Club. About to start year 11 at Wyndham Central College, Wol has his sights set on studying mechanical engineering once he graduates and is also keen to become a police officer. But the teen is well aware that he is one of the lucky ones. Asked about the recent spate of crimes

Wyndham families deserve to feel safe. That is our priority. While recent reports have shaken some, they require context. Melbourne is the world’s fifth safest city. Youth crime has been falling for almost a decade. In 2017, crime in Wyndham fell by more than 10 per cent, one of the biggest drops recorded; the first in four years after the previous Liberal government did nothing. The Crime Statistics Agency’s latest figures show the offence rate had the biggest decrease in 10 years, falling 6.3 per cent in the year to September 2017. When you refer to facts (youth offenders per 100,000 – New South Wales 2741, Queensland 2632, Victoria 1573), and look beyond the fearmongering coming from the PM and Peter Dutton (home affairs minister), you can see that there are half as many youth offenders in Victoria than Sydney. Growing communities like Wyndham need more police, which is why the Andrews Labor government has funded the largest boost to Victoria Police, with 3135 additional police to Victorian communities. Of the first 300, more than 100 have been allocated to western suburbs, with 27 officers in Wyndham, and more to come.
It was Labor that built Wyndham North police station and we are upgrading Werribee police station. We’ve boosted the gang crime squad, which works with local police to investigate and prevent criminal behaviour. Our community admires the dedicated work of Victoria Police, but some may still feel let down by our justice system. That’s why we’re making major reforms to bail, requiring judges and magistrates to refuse bail for offences such as aggravated home invasion and carjacking unless there are exceptional circumstances. But this is not just a law and order issue. Young people need opportunities to contribute to communities, which is why we we’re delivering record investments in jobs, education, and training. The Liberals “tough” talk on crime is cheap, given they ripped money out of programs supporting Wyndham’s most disadvantaged and didn’t deliver one extra police officer above attrition. Victorians deserve better. Wyndham is a diverse community with big aspirations. We won’t stand for fearmongering and empty promises. Pollution rates still a problem By Alesha Capone The state Environment Protection Authority has received 7488 complaints about pollution in the Melbourne metropolitan region in 18 months. During the 2016-17 financial year, residents of the metro region – which includes Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Brimbank, Melton and Maribyrnong – contacted EPA Victoria 4639 times to report pollution. Between July and December last year, the

EPA received a further 2849 complaints about pollution. Across the entire 18 months, a total of 2763 complaints about odour, 1667 about noise,
1425 about water problems, 962 about waste, 418 about dust and 253 about smoke were received. EPA metro manager Steve Pugh said that although many industries across Melbourne shut down for the Christmas and New Year holiday season, the authority would remain alert for reports of pollution in the region. “Many businesses however, close down and in preparation they may well be cleaning vehicles, washing equipment, cleaning out
warehouses or similar facilities ready for the break,” Mr Pugh said. “When doing so, they must remember to manage the run-off water so that pollutants are not running off into stormwater drains.” Mr Pugh said chemicals should also be stored in secure containers and bounded areas that would be resistant to the extremes in temperature and weather. Green plan hatched An egg-cellent series of environmentallyfriendly events will be held in Wyndham throughout February and March. Wyndham council’s popular Green Living Series is back, with more than 35 free tours, classes and demonstrations on offer to help residents learn how to live greener, cleaner and healthier. Werribee’s Craig Castree will run chicken-keeping and edible garden lessons as part of the program. His chook-keeping class will be held at the Eco-Living Centre in Wyndham Vale, from 2.30-4pm on Saturday, February 3, and the edible gardens class will run from 10am-noon on Sunday, March 24. Wyndham environment and sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said the Green Living Series, now in its fifth year, was soaring in popularity. “Back in 2014, we ran it as a trial with 10 events, which were attended by 179 people,” she

said. “Last year there were 34 events attended by almost 1800 people.” Cr Marcus said the latest Green Living Series would offer more events, including a tour of Mount Rothwell, the largest predator-free ecosystem in Victoria; a koala tour of the You Yangs; cheese-making classes; and bird-watching for beginners. “The Green Living Series aims to increase local interest and knowledge in living sustainably by raising awareness and providing tools and ideas for change,” Cr Marcus said. “If you’ve ever wanted to make a green change in your household, but don’t know where to start, make sure you come along.” For more information and a full list of events, visit wyndham.vic.gov.au/greenlivingseries. Since starting in January last year, the Westgate PACER (Police and Clinician Emergency Response) unit has helped frontline police attending call-outs in Wyndham, Maribyrnong or Hobsons Bay where people are exhibiting suicidal behaviour or suffering from a mental health crisis. The unit, which includes a uniform police officer and a mental health clinician, operates during afternoons and evenings, seven days a week. It has responded to more than 370 calls. In one case, the Westgate PACER team responded to a call-out from a 23-year-old man who had thoughts of self harm as a result of a relationship breakdown and financial concerns. The team completed a comprehensive assessment on the man, including a safety plan and follow-up care with community mental health services. Acting Senior Sergeant Jason Forster said the model was designed to give the person in crisis tailored, expert assistance and treatment in their own homes. “[It] also allows for the frontline uniform members to be relieved to attend other tasks, increasing community safety,” Acting Senior Sergeant Forster said. Previously, people experiencing suicidal thoughts would be transported by an ambulance or police to the nearest hospital for assessment and treatment, which would involve significant time and resources by police and paramedics.
Point Cook dancer Florence Shinaduku (pictured) has joined with Snuff Puppets to present a series of free outdoor dance classes in Wyndham. Ms Shinaduku, assisted by the giant puppet Kelly Boom, will teach the traditional Congolese dance style ‘Mutuashi’ at locations throughout the municipality across a six-week period. The project has been funded by a grant from Wyndham council and each dance class will be suitable for all ages and abilities. The classes will run Saturdays at 11am, with the first two sessions to be held on January 27 and February 3 at the Wyndham Harbour, Marina Quays. The next two sessions will be held on February 10 and 17, at the Point Cook Coastal Park, Side Entrance Road. The final two classes will be held on February 24 at the Werribee Pop Up Park in Station Place and March 3, at the Point Cook Pop Up Park in Murnong Street. MY WYNDHAM John (Giovanni) Portogallo worked the Werribee South market gardens as a child, before opening Werribee’s first cafe. He tells Charlene Macaulay about his early life in Werribee and his late wife Gaetana. What’s your connection to Wyndham? I was born in Sicily, Italy, in 1926. I was one month old when my father left for Australia. He managed to borrow £60 to bring my mum and me over. We lived in North Melbourne. Then dad heard that land was being rented out down at Werribee Park and we moved in 1934. There was 15 Italian families eventually working land there. When we moved down on to the farm, they brought in old, abandoned farm houses … you know where they play polo now, off K Road? Well, that was the entrance for all those houses. All that land opposite was all market garden land. How did you meet your wife, Gaetana? My father-in-law and his brother-in-law were originally market gardeners in Bendigo. Then their partner moved to Werribee and [they did too]. Gaetana was 18 months older than I. I said to my uncle, “You know Gaetana over the road over there, I’ve fallen in love with her”. So my uncle told my father what my intentions were, and he made a night where my father and mother and [future] in-laws met up to talk about it. Her parents agreed to ask Gaetana if she liked me … and she said to her parents, “If you like him, I like him”. We got married on December 7, 1947, at St Mary’s Star of the Sea in West Melbourne, because most of our guests came from Melbourne and didn’t have a car. The reception was at Federal Hall in Footscray and there was 450 guests. Just before the wedding, breweries went on strike, and the caterer couldn’t find
beer! Our next-door neighbour had christened his daughter and he had a big party at home … he had brought three nine-gallon kegs and used one keg, so he gave us the two left over. Then we went to Little River and got another three kegs. I understand the two of you loved to go out dancing. My father taught me how to dance and taught my wife how to dance. We’re life members at the Italian Social Club and we used to go dancing there every Saturday night. She passed away 2001. I always carry her photo. What are some of your other interests? I studied singing at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music for 10 years. You also introduced Werribee to cappuccinos – tell me more. I opened up the first espresso coffee business in Werribee. This was on Watton Street, next door to where Lowes the chemist is now. It was called Don Giovanni – my name. The Gaggia machine was all hand-operated … when I first opened the cafe, two women came past and I made them coffee and my wife gave them some home-made cake. I made the coffee with milk and put the chocolate on top, and they said, “Chocolate shouldn’t go there!” But they came every day after that. It was choc-a-bloc every day and every night. A lot of locals would come and play cards in there.

Second go at first sight By Goya Dmytryshchak Married at First Sight favourite John Robertson is back for another shot at love in the 2018 series of the show. The 55-year-old from Altona Meadows was badly mismatched in season four after being wed to Debbie from Queensland who was upset he wasn’t Polynesian. Mr Robertson, a retail business owner with two adult daughters, was born and bred in Altona, and played football with local club The Vikings for about 20 years. He said after the last series ended, Channel Nine called to see if he was still single. “I was single at the time and the producers rang me up and they asked me what’s my status. I told them and they said, ‘Look, do you wanna come back?’ Mr Robertson said. Mr Robertson became one of the show’s favourites last season because of his down-to-earth manner. He said while he had learnt a lot from being on the show, it was hard to handle emotions. “It feels like when you’re in that experiment your emotions are amplified and I don’t think you can control that,” Mr Robertson said. “Even though you know what’s coming, you have a little inside information about the show, your emotions are still as real when it comes to love and all that sort of stuff.” He said this year’s show was full of controversy and characters. “Honestly, I think last year’s hasn’t got a patch on this series. “And I spruik Altona on there a bit, I’m telling you. I always say how wonderful Altona is – nobody believes me.” The show premieres on Monday, January 29 and Mr Robertson’s wedding airs on Sunday, February 4.
Rail contract rebuilds lives Disadvantaged young people will be employed to maintain the Newport Rail Academy under a three-year partnership between the state government and YMCA Rebuild. The academy was established in 2007 to train Victoria’s rail and tram workers. YMCA ReBuild manager Gary Sinclair said the contract would give many disadvantaged young people multiple training pathways. “They will have the opportunity to be rotated through this contract to provide experience in areas such as landscaping, painting, at-heights work including window and gutter cleaning, and general maintenance,” he said. “Companies can make a discernible difference to the community by engaging social enterprises like ReBuild that provide commercial services such as landscaping, painting and maintenance whilst simultaneously targeting a range of social issues such as those faced by young offenders.” Industry and Employment Minister Ben Carroll said that through the partnership, supervisors would work one-on-one with young trainees. Work would include maintaining the gardens and fences, carpentry repairs and painting. Crews will also fit-out a new classroom in the academy’s high-voltage substation students to learn how to maintain Melbourne’s train network.

A Christmas bite of the Big Apple By Ewen McRae There’s something magical about Christmas in New York. While in Australia we’re used to scorching heat, swimming pools and street cricket on December 25, we still grow up with every Christmas movie showing us a white Christmas and a jolly Santa in a thick coat. I ventured over in December to experience Christmas and New Years in the Big Apple, and with high expectations it met every one. Obviously flights and accommodation are inflated at this time of year, so it’s important to be organised if you’re thinking of doing this trip. Look to book your flights when there’s a deal or sale on in the middle of the year, and keep an eye on hotels or Air BnB rates in the lead up, you can grab a bargain if you’re looking at the right time. I was able to get an Air BnB apartment in the East Village for about $180 a night, which is about as good as it gets if you plan to stay in Manhattan, and that’s the perfect location to get anywhere and also escape the midtown crowds. If you’re there on Christmas Eve it’s well worth heading up to the Rockefeller Plaza to mingle with the crowds under the famous Christmas tree. I was standing under the tree when it started to snow and you feel like you’re in one of so many Christmas movies. It’s a nice chilled way to start the celebrations. It’s worth mentioning early that you will need to pack warm, with most days hovering around -4 and nights dropping further as the wind picks up. Christmas Day in New York gives the chance to do things a bit differently, and since I was travelling solo I decided to take in the traditional NBA game at Madison Square
Garden, with the New York Knicks a feature of every Christmas in the city. If you have the chance to head along I would highly recommend it, the atmosphere is electric. The city itself is pretty quiet on Christmas
Day (I went to an Australian expat bar to spend the day with fellow travellers and watch the Boxing Day Test), but the days following provide plenty of chances to get out and experience the holidays in one of the world’s great cities. If shopping is what you’re looking for, head

in lines for an hour and still want that photo of the New York skyline, visit the top of the Rockefeller Centre. You can book online and just show up at your allocated time. A couple of short lines and you’re up on the top for the views. This also has the advantage of getting the Empire State Building in your photos. If you’re at Rockefeller, it’s only a short walk to the bottom of Central Park to go ice skating – if that’s your thing – or wander through the park towards some of the best museums
around. The MET and the Museum of Natural History are quite close to each other, about 15 minutes walk up the park. No trip to New York would be complete without a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge, so wait for a clear day and make the trek over. Not just an amazing engineering feat, it also has great views across the river towards Manhattan. While you’re on the other side, go and explore Brooklyn and Williamsburg, the latter of which is one of my favourite parts of the city
with a wide variety of bars, cafes and shopping to pique any interest. In terms of nights out, you’re spoilt for choice. The East Village has a number of small bars with great craft beer, there’s the chance to catch a show on Broadway, or head to the Comedy Cellar for one of their iconic underground comedy nights. If you’re still in New York at New Years you’re very lucky. If you want to see the ball drop in Times Square, be warned. It is ridiculously packed,
and you’re stuck outside on a freezing night with no chance of getting out. I opted for one of a number of New Years packages at a bar downtown. Do some research on what you’re looking for (rooftop, club, dive bar etc) and you’re sure to find some good drinks packages, DJs or bands to ring in the new year in style. On top of all that there’s still the Statue of Liberty, Chelsea Pier/Market, the World Trade Centre Memorial, Wall Street, and infinitely more to make for an unforgettable time in an amazing city.
If you live in a suburb near grasslands, you’re at risk of fire. If you live directly next to parks or paddocks and a fire starts, walk at least two streets back. If you live two or more streets away, stay where you are. Grassfires are unlikely to spread into built up areas. Stay alert and monitor conditions. Don’t drive, visibility may be poor, accidents are likely, and you could block emergency services.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir experiences some dumpling delight Putting aside my gentle ribbing about the “Scottish ancestry” of Hopkins Street’s new dumpling purveyor, it turns out there is method in their method. MC Dumpling, you see, stands for My Chinese Dumpling. But more than that, this place does embrace a fast-food look and process. And that, as in this case, can be good. What it means here is bright, clean surrounds; brisk service with a smile; and freshly prepared and very affordable food. But it is the dumplings that are definitely the go here. The steamed pork and chive numbers, for instance, are fabulous at $9 for 16. Fresh-as, not too big, kinda dainty, juicy/ succulent – even if there was little by way of discernible chive vibe. Ditto with the lamb and leek dumplings – same number, same price, same good impression. We fare slightly less impressively with the sides. These chicken ribs normally cost $3, but are being presented to customers free with any order as an opening celebration. We don’t know how long that’ll be the case! They’re well fried and ungreasy – but tasteless. Or rather, taste not of chicken. Actually, ALL the sides cost $3 – including the corn fritters.

There’s more to explore by way of sides here. And the dumplings – and the place – appeal as happy additions to Footscray central.

he CraftAlive expo will have crafter hearts a-flutter with excitement thanks to an extraordinary line-up of classes and chats at the Encore Centre in Hoppers Crossing during three packed days from February 2. Sally Taylor, event manager from CraftAlive, says the organisation is chuffed about bringing one of the prestigious events – normally held only in metropolitan areas – to Wyndham. “We’ve run Stitches events in Wyndham in the past, but this is the first time residents from the western region can participate in a CraftAlive expo at a local level,” she says. “They have the chance to meet local, national and international craft experts who will bring new ideas and all the latest trends for people to experience first-hand. “We are thrilled, for example, to have Pauline from Quilters World, known throughout Australia for her quilting expertise and ability to teach all aspects of patchwork and quilting. “Amy Kallissa, a talented up-and-coming young artist, will also run classes, entitled Let’s Face It. Cats enjoy clean record Hoppers Crossing will be the western suburbs’ entrant at the Women’s Cricket Community Competition Twenty20 finals after going through the group stage undefeated. The Cats secured their place in this season’s finals as minor premiers of the west group following a 19-run win over Altona Roosters in the top-of-the-table clash at Hogans Road Reserve on Sunday. An aggressive Hoppers Crossing scored at nearly five runs an over to post 8-117 off their 20 overs. Taylah Steadman was the backbone of the innings for the Cats with 43 at the top of the order. Steadman has been in good touch with the bat in the shortest format, averaging 46 across two digs. The young all-rounder still features in the Cats under-17 team. Cats captain Brianna Herman made a vital contribution of 38 in the middle order, while Madalyn Smith added 13. Altona Roosters spluttered their way to 7-98 off 20 overs. Not even a generous 25 extras from the Cats bowlers could help the Roosters’ cause. Steadman was at the forefront for the Cats with 3-18 off four overs, while Smith came up big with 2-17 off four. Hoppers Crossing has advanced to the north west final, where it will play against Melbourne University, winners of the north group, at Princes Park in North Carlton on Sunday at 2pm. Lance Jenkinson
It’s summer sport, which means it is played in the heat ... deal with it. Thank goodness we have moved on from that, or have we? Every year at the tennis, football club pre-season training and the cricket we see images of elite athletes struggling with temperatures more suited to frying eggs. Last week the 40-plus days had one tennis player claiming he was dying on court. Local sport errs on the conservative side in this area and rightly so, especially for juniors. Calls for heat policies to be reviewed and dropped back a few degrees make sense to me. Sport is supposed to be fun.

to standalone status, Werribee identified that a senior assistant coaching role was an important addition to the coaching staff. In that role, Andrews will focus on developing the Tigers defensive game plan and development plans for the playing group. Lamont has already seen Andrews make an important contribution in the pre-season. “He’s got a real eye for defence, so it’s been another really positive appointment,” he said. Stone will take control of the backline this season after working as a midfield coach for the now defunct development league team
last season. The move was a bit of a shock for Stone, but one the former senior coach at Lara, Inverleigh and Thomson will grasp with both hands. “It probably came as a bit of a surprise when it happened, as I’d gone into the year expecting to be involved in the midfield, but I’m really excited about a different opportunity, and I’m going to learn a hell of a lot of new things, so I’m looking forward to it,” he said. David Newett has been appointed to the new role of kicking coach. Werribee will open the VFL season on April 1 against Geelong Cats at Torquay Football Ground.
The amount of people required to get a team on the park is getting out of hand at local level. Football is the worst offender but other sports are quickly catching up, especially for coaching. The days of the captain-coach are gone and even a playing coach is a rare beast these days. We are used to seeing former AFL players having a kick or coaching in the suburban competitions but are we seeing the next step? Former senior AFL coaches have rarely come back to grassroots football, but this year Rodney Eade will be coaching Balwyn in the EFL while Guy McKenna is at the helm at Beaumaris in the ammos. Football clubs tend to follow each other in most aspects so I expect this to be a new trend in the next few years.

The Williamstown Superules team has had its fair share of superstars during its history including Tony Liberatore, Saade Ghazi and Tony Pastore, to name a few. The club will be fielding five sides in 2018 from over 35s to infinity. Training starts February 1 and every Thursday from then on with the season starting on April 8. The wholesale changes at the Werribee Tigers have not been confined to the playing group. The Tigers have also re-shaped their coaching set-up under senior coach John Lamont, appointing Jeff Andrews to the new position of senior assistant coach and moving Shayne Stone to the role of backline coach. Andrews came on the radar of the Tigers after leading Macedon to a drought-breaking premiership in the Riddell District Football League. He served the Cats in that position for four years, but also boasts experience at higher levels as an assistant coach with Preston in the VFL and assistant coach of the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup across two stints. Just like most of the new faces at the Watton Street club, Andrews is excited by the club’s decision to return to standalone VFL status for the first time in 19 years. “The fact the club has been aligned for so long, it basically feels like a new club,” he said. “A few guys who I coached over the last couple of years at Macedon were Werribee boys, and in conversations with them, they said they’d still be playing here today if they could. “They love the club, even though it’s VFL level, it still feels like a footy club. “I’ve had that great footy club feel ever since I walked through the door, and I love the professionalism, so I’m looking to contribute as much as I can.” As part of a club review ahead of the return

Weeks works his magic against Tigers Chris Weeks was the one that got away for the Werribee bowlers. Weeks, the No. 4 batsman, was a lone hand for Kew with 129 off 157 balls in his side’s competitive total of 212 off 70.3 overs in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association at Victoria Park on Saturday. “He batted extremely well,” Werribee captain-coach Tim O’Brien said. “He’s a class player, he’s made a lot of runs this season and he continued it against us.” Weeks timed his innings to perfection. A little slow to start with, he got stronger the longer the Kew innings went. He eventually exploded to life late on to push the score beyond 200. “He batted pretty good all day, he was 40-odd at tea and took a bit of time to get going, but he
wasn’t scoring that quick until he was batting with their No. 11 and that last partnership put on 60. “He just teed them up, we had blokes out on the fence, but he was hitting them wherever he wanted to. “It was lucky we got him out when we did because there was still 10 overs to go.” Kew went from 9-158 to 212 and in a position to consider itself a chance of victory. Jack Budd was the Werribee bowler who had the most success. Budd finished with superb figures of 4-50 off 17.3, including the prized scalp of Weeks. The young medium pacer continues to impress his coach. “He bowled exceptionally well,” O’Brien said. “He’s come along well this year. He’s always
bowled OK without taking a lot of wickets, but now he’s starting to take wickets.” O’Brien was the pick of the Werribee spinners with 2-50 off 16, while opening bowler Jonathan Burton, with 1-30 off 16, and left arm quick Matthew Palmer, 1-17 off seven, put the clamps on the Kew scoring. Werribee was 1-18 off seven overs at stumps with Matthew Dean the batsman to fall. The Tigers are confident they have enough batting arsenal to take the victory on day two on Saturday. “If it’s the same conditions, I’m pretty confident,” O’Brien said. “We’ve had a pretty good month with the bat, so I’m confident to back the boys. Cats catch a late break By Lance Jenkinson A devastating bowling spell from Brett Smith has given Hoppers Crossing the upper hand in its Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association bout with Brunswick at Gillon Oval. Smith was a man on a mission late on day one, charging in to take 3-11 off eight overs, including five maidens, to turn the north-west first XI game in his side’s favour. His last ball of the day removed Wicks star batsman Liam Murphy. Cats captain-coach Greg Kennedy reckons that puts his side “slightly” ahead in the game. “Their lower order hasn’t been forced to perform that much this year,” he said. “Now they’re going to have to put on 100 to win the game against a good bowling attack [that] is fired up and ready to go on a difficult wicket.” The outlook could have been vastly different at stumps for Hoppers Crossing had it not been for its late wicket-taking blitz. The Cats were bowled out for 129 earlier in the day – a total that was not too bad considering the conditions, but one that Kennedy still felt put his team behind the eight ball. “First ball of the day, our opening batsman Chris Henry gets a ball that rolls,” he said. “It should’ve gone through at thigh height and goes through at ankle height and bowls him. “While 129 looks poor, it’s not as far behind par as you might have thought because of the wicket. “I think it’s short of a number, but we always analyse if the right shot for the right ball in that situation is played. “I think nine of our blokes today can happily say they played the right shot for the right ball, but they were just done by a combination of good bowling or the inconsistent wicket. “We scratched and scratched and put together a couple of smallish partnerships.” Cameron Nicol was the pick of the Hoppers Crossing batsmen, scrapping his way to 29. Will Partington-Gardner added 35 and Brandon Diplock made 24 to give the Cats a decent enough score to defend. Brunswick, which faced 22 overs, is in desperate trouble on 5-43. The Wicks had no answer to Smith’s dominant bowling late in the day. “Brett was awesome – he bowled a spell from both ends,” Kennedy said. “He’s been the game changer so far.” Already a long way off the title race pace, next week’s play is do or die for Hoppers Crossing. “We’d have to win and then be a little bit lucky,” Kennedy said. “It’s a must-win, we’ve got to come out with everything.”

Bees back with a strong win Werribee got back into the winning spirit with a 90-72 victory over Brunswick in the Bowls Victoria division 1 at Watton Street on Saturday. The Bees were keen to bounce back after failing to snare a single point against Fitzroy Victoria a week earlier and did so in fine fashion, three rinks to one. They endured a first-half struggle before rallying in the second to emerge with a comfortable win. Fresh from a week out, Rob Smith was the standout for Werribee. Smith bowled beautifully to be the star of his rink, which won 26-10. Ian Milledge escaped with a narrow 21-20 win, while Colin Thompson was victorious 24-20. Peter Yasser’s 22-19 loss did not effect the overall result. Fifth-placed Werribee has a tough away fixture against top two side Glenroy this Saturday.
