Cops read the riot act By Charlene Macaulay and Alesha Capone Three youths were arrested and charged over a Tarneit riot last week, and four more arrested following last month’s trashing and riot at a Werribee rented house as police ramp up efforts to combat escalating crime by African street gangs. The anti-gang squad has been deployed to Wyndham and a number of new police officers will be stationed in the area in coming months as part of a Victoria Police plan to crack down on African youth crime across Wyndham. The enforcement follows: • The trashing and riot at a rented Airbnb house in Werribee on December 20. Police have charged a 15-year-old Kurunjang boy with aggravated burglary, criminal damage and armed robbery, and a 16-year-old Tarneit boy with criminal damage and assault. Werribee Crime Investigation Unit detectives arrested another four youths last Friday, but no charges had been laid; • A police officer was kicked in the head at Highpoint shopping centre on December 26. A 17-year-old Point Cook teen has been charged with assaulting an emergency worker on duty, intentionally and recklessly causing injury and common law assault. He has been remanded in custody after breaching bail conditions last week; • Ongoing crime and public disorder issues at Tarneit’s Ecoville Community Park; • A riot at Tarneit Central Shopping Centre last Thursday in which a number of youths, believed to be of African appearance, allegedly confronted, threatened and spat at police. Two 18-year-old men, both from Tarneit, were charged with behaving in a riotous manner and assault-related offences. A 17-year-old Point Cook male has been charged with resisting arrest, assaulting police, riotous behaviour and other assault-related offences; and • Yelling, fighting and general disturbance on Saturday night when about 100 African youths congregated around Prudence Parade, Whitecaps Avenue and Biscay Street in Point Cook’s Alamanda estate. A Victoria Police spokesperson said police observed people leaving a nearby gathering and all dispersed without incident, with no incidents detected. Victoria Police Commander Russell Barrett told Star Weekly that members of the anti-gang squad were already on the beat in Wyndham and would remain in the area until police were satisfied they’ve resolved the issue. He said anti-gang squad police would assist detectives working on Operation Wayward,

which started in mid-2017 in a crackdown on street robberies and armed robberies and has since had its parameters shifted to focus on addressing high-level youth crime. “We’re well-resourced to address the spike in offending we’ve seen just in the last week or so,” he said. “We’re highly focused on arresting [offenders] and addressing this spate of behaviour, whether it’s in Ecoville Park or young people misbehaving.” As reported by Star Weekly in November, Wyndham is in the midst of receiving 27
new police, including four new sergeants. Commander Barrett said more than half of those police had already been deployed in Wyndham, with the rest to arrive in coming months and “a small number of detectives” supplementing the intake. He said residents should be mindful that it was not an offence for people to gather in large numbers. Last week, Wyndham mayor Peter Maynard and a number of council staff and councillors met Werribee MP Tim Pallas, Police Minister
Lisa Neville and senior members of Victoria Police to outline resident concerns “about perceptions of a total disregard for law and order and our local police in general”. “[We are] extremely concerned about any criminal activities that take place within our community,” Cr Maynard said. “We neither condone nor tolerate the kind of behaviour that has been reported recently.” ■ More

Wyndham submits works wishlist By Charlene Macaulay Two new Regional Rail Link stations, 13 new schools and support services for the Wyndham Justice Precinct have topped Wyndham council’s state and federal government wishlists for this year’s budgets. The council recently submitted its 2018-19 pre-budget submissions for both levels of government, with a number of projects, including a business case, land and infrastructure planning study, master plan development and land acquisition for the
Western Interstate Freight Terminal, requiring funding from both the state and federal governments. The submissions also called for: • Funding to build a senior secondary college and two primary schools, and funding to plan and acquire land for seven primary schools, two secondary schools and a specialist school; • A duplicated four-lane Ison Road overpass bridge; • Planning for new Regional Rail Link stations at Black Forest Road and Davis Road; • Pre-planning and prioritisation to remove
the Werribee and Hoppers Crossing level crossings; • Financing the support services hub in the Wyndham Justice Precinct in the 2018-19 budgets; • Buying land and planning for a Wyndham family violence support and safety hub; • Supporting Avalon Airport’s plans to become an international airport (federal); and • Continued federal government funding for 15 hours per week of kindergarten. The council has also supported a call by the Interface Councils for an increased
and long-term funding commitment to the Growing Suburbs Fund, which contributes to projects in Melbourne’s growth areas. Councillor Josh Gilligan said it was time Wyndham received its fair share. “If you look at the program that the federal government have outlined, and you look at western Sydney, Brisbane, getting significant quantums of funding – hundreds of millions of dollars, to be precise – they’re growing at a rate of knots. We’re growing at very similar rates, [but] we’ve been given $200,000. That is it,” he said.

Mr Dickinson, who was a king’s scout as a boy, moved to London when he was 18 and started working in the export sales industry. He was then conscripted to the British Army, where he worked in the psychological warfare unit and received an MBE for parachuting into German-occupied Albania. It was during his six-and-a-half years in the army that Douglas, by then a captain, met wife Jean at a dance in the Yorkshire Dales. Five weeks later, the two lovebirds were engaged. The couple have been married for 71 years. Mr Dickinson, who could speak a number of languages, went back into the export sales
market after the army, and also got a music degree and started a second career as a piano teacher. He was still playing until only a few months ago, when he suffered a stroke. The Dickinsons and their three children – Paul, Louise and Clive – moved to New Zealand in the 1950s for work, and then Douglas and Jean made Australia home in 1995. Mr Dickinson also has four grandsons, one of whom shares his birthday, and one great-grandson. Charlene Macaulay

It was the birthday milestone Douglas Dickinson thought he’d never reach. But reach it he did, and last Wednesday the Manor Court Werribee Aged Care resident celebrated his 100th birthday, with family flying in from all over the world – including China, Italy and New Zealand – to celebrate. Mr Dickinson, who was born on January 3, 1918 in Coventry, England, has had his fair share of health concerns over his lifetime, and in 1998 doctors only gave him two years to live when he was diagnosed with cancer. Wife Jean said: “Several times doctors told us he can’t go on, and here he is.”
Paramedics attended more than 90 call-outs related to children trapped inside vehicles within Wyndham in a 12-month period. New data from Ambulance Victoria shows there were 93 emergency calls for youngsters stuck inside vehicles in Wyndham between September 1, 2016, and August 31 last year. There were 1696 such calls made across the state during the 12-month period, with the 3030 postcode (which covers Werribee, Werribee South, Point Cook, Derrimut and Quandong) topping the list with 43 individual call-outs. The 3029 postcode – which takes in Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and Truganina – placed third on the list with 41 call-outs. The 3024 postcode (Wyndham Vale, Manor Lakes and Mount Cottrell) recorded five call-outs, with the 3027 postcode (Williams Landing, Laverton RAAF and Williams RAAF) recording four calls. The state government has released the figures to coincide with the launch of a campaign aimed at making motorists aware that it is unsafe to leave children unattended in cars, especially in summer. The campaign, which stars AFL personality Matthew Richardson, will include ads on television and radio. In Victoria, it is against the law to leave children alone in a vehicle, with offenders facing fines of up to $3900 and jail for six months. Wyndham council is joining Kidsafe Victoria for a campaign about the dangers of leaving children in hot cars, with warning signs to be placed at locations such as early childhood centres. Kevin Hillier hopes clear heads prevail on the issue of gangs
W
hat a wonderful and enthralling year we have to look forward to, with the rising gang problem walking hand in hand with the looming state election across our fair city for the next few months. It is a match made in political heaven. This will allow all candidates to concentrate their entire beings on this one issue and ignore dozens of others of equal importance. We are already seeing mainstream media attempting to shape the debate and run the agenda with their versions of what is happening in Wyndham. I don’t have any insider insight. I read the same papers, watch the same television shows and hear the same radio stations and monitor the same social media platforms as you do. Am I worried or scared? In relation to some things, yes. Do I like what is happening in our city? No. Do I have the solution? No. Do I think anyone in the political arena has the answers? No, certainly not any one person or party. I don’t see the solution coming from a
community approach either, because the minute people disagree these days they shelve the point they are disagreeing about, and start a personal slanging match. This is not exclusive to those in political organisations, as a cursory look at Facebook forums on this subject will confirm. It’s a free for all. The emotion is like a bushfire, hard to contain and devastating in the damage it can do in a short amount of time. I have yet to see any constructive leadership shown about the gang problem. The police have to do what they are directed to by their bosses. Their bosses are our state representatives who theoretically answer to the voters. If only it was that cut and dried and orderly. It is easy to be an alarmist and even easier to brand this whole mess as a race-related issue. This is everyone’s problem and adopting the mob mentality is not the answer. Clear heads are needed and those heads must be non-political, non-aligned ethnically, and committed to the outcome which benefits everyone involved in this. Personal agendas have no place in the resolution of this. â–

A 52-year-old Werribee man has been charged with child exploitation offences. Victorian Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team officers executed a search warrant in Werribee on December 21. The man appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on December 22 and was bailed to re-appear in April.

Call to remove Hoppers’ crossing By Alesha Capone A western suburbs MP has called for the Hoppers Crossing level crossing to be included in the state government’s crossing removal program. Western metropolitan MP Bernie Finn raised the matter in Parliament in December. Addressing Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan, he said: “Will the minister explain to the Wyndham community, including the mayor and council, why she refuses to include the dangerous and congested
Hoppers Crossing level crossing on the list of level crossing removals?” The state government has committed to removing 50 of the state’s most dangerous level crossings by 2022, including those in Cherry Street and Werribee Street, Werribee. But the Old Geelong Road crossing in Hoppers Crossing is not among those earmarked for removal – something Mr Finn told Star Weekly he found “absolutely astonishing”. “I don’t think there is a soul in Hoppers Crossing or Werribee who thinks that level
crossing shouldn’t be removed,” he said. “It is bizarre … I think it’s clear there has been a stuff up here.” Mr Finn’s comments came after the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office issued a scathing report into the level crossing removal program. The report, published last month, stated “ … not all of the 50 level crossings selected for removal are the most dangerous and congested” in the state. The report said 18 of the state’s most dangerous level crossings, as judged by the
Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model (ALCAM), had not been included on the removal list. The ALCAM uses factors such as a level crossing’s physical properties to calculate its risk. In 2008, the state transport department released a list of level crossing removal priorities for Victoria, using the ALCAM method. On this list, Old Geelong Road was ranked as the 15th most-dangerous level crossing in the state, with Cherry Street coming in ninth. The state government was contacted for a response.
College scores upgrade A number of Manor Lakes sporting clubs are already off to a great start to 2018 thanks to a $935,000 upgrade of sporting facilities. The state government will fund the upgrade at Manor Lakes College, adding a second oval, cricket nets and sports lighting. The existing pavilion will also be renovated to cater for a growing number of sporting teams. Wyndham mayor and sports development portfolio holder Peter Maynard said the long-awaited upgrade would allow sporting clubs to expand exponentially. He said once works were complete, the Manor Lakes Cricket Club will be able to quadruple the number of members it can accommodate – expanding to eight junior teams, four senior teams and four social teams – while the Manor Lakes Football Club will be able to double its membership to 16 teams. “When the sporting facilities at Manor Lakes were originally built, there was a vision for this
to be a sporting hub that would include two ovals that could accommodate multiple sports, cricket nets and a pavilion,” Cr Maynard said. “Since then, while the first oval and the pavilion were constructed, the project was never completed to the standard that council, the local community or the sporting clubs wanted. “Now, thanks to funding from the state government and years of residents, council officers and myself as sport development portfolio holder calling for action, we can finally complete this important project.” Charlene Macaulay

Councils pound out new plan By Tate Papworth Six western suburbs councils are exploring the possibility of establishing a western regional animal pound. Melton, Brimbank Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Moonee Valley city council’s are currently conducting a feasibility study to determine whether such a pound is viable. Brimbank city development acting director Kristen Gilbert said Brimbank had partnered with neighbouring councils in an effort to deal with animal management.
“Council has been involved with other neighbouring councils in exploring the possibility of a regional pound facility to service the growth area of the west,” she said. “This is still in the early stages of investigation.” The study is being spearheaded by Wyndham, which had almost 150 dog attacks reported for the 2016-17 financial year. In Brimbank, there was a 64 per cent spike in the number of reported dog attacks in the same period – 163, up from 99.
In Melton, planning and development general manager Luke Shannon said 18 cases were expected to go to court. “Melton City council takes a zero tolerance approach to dog attacks,” he said. “Each dog attack reported to council is thoroughly investigated. “In 2017, 18 dog attack matters were deemed serious enough to be lodged in the Magistrates’ Court. “A further 18 are expected to be prepared and lodged.” At its December meeting, Melton
council revealed its animal management plan. The plan, which is updated every four years, includes a goal of increasing public awareness as to what constitutes a dog attack and to encourage the reporting of such incidents. It also places high priority on decreasing the time taken by community members to report dog attacks. As of June last year, there were 13 declared dangerous dogs, 20 declared menacing dogs and 10 restricted-breed dogs registered in Melton.
Young artist in the frame An aspiring film director is one step closer to achieving his dream after taking out the inaugural Werribee Vic Short Film Competition. Giles Campbell-Wright spent about three days shooting, and two weeks editing, his 90-second homage to Wyndham, which features a number of Wyndham landmarks – including the Point Cook RAAF base, State Rose Garden, Werribee Open Range Zoo, the Werribee South market gardens and K Road cliffs to name a few – against a soundtrack of wildlife. The 24-year-old Werribee South resident, who grew up at the Point Cook RAAF base, said he was thrilled with the win. “I didn’t know what to say when I found out I’d won. I was speechless really,” he said. “It’s really special to me that I’ve won it, because I’ve lived in the area my whole life and I know the area really well and, having grown
up on the RAAF base at Point Cook, I felt a real connection to the history of the area and the aesthetic and the feeling and the atmosphere and the mood of it all.” Campbell-Wright, who has just completed his honours degree in film and TV, plans on starting his own videography company this year and will use his winnings – an $1800 JB Hi-Fi voucher – to buy more camera and editing equipment. “In the future, I’m really interested in working on social justice and doing documentary work and getting into the community, speaking about issues of social inequality and the struggle of migrants, and so on,” he said. Law and order a key poll issue By Charlene Macaulay Law and order is shaping up to be a key issue in the November state election – but should not be used for political point scoring, according to two candidates for the seat of Tarneit. Labor’s Sarah Connolly and the Greens’ Beck Sheffield-Brotherton stressed it was important not to abuse the issue of African youth crime for political gain out of respect to victims of crime and the local community. The pair, and Liberal candidate Glenn Goodfellow, told Star Weekly last week that they were keen to understand the underlying issues fuelling youth crime. Ms Sheffield-Brotherton said until the community felt safe again it needed its fair share of police resources and a strong police presence, while highly supervised community orders with a focus on building positive relationships and engagement were preferable to jail “in most circumstances” for offenders. “The treatment of offenders needs to meet the dual goals of community safety in the short-term while also ensuring longer-term protection by avoiding turning young people into hardened criminals,” she said. Ms Connolly said that if elected, she would ensure local police “continue to get the resources and powers they need to prevent, detect and disrupt crime”. “Those responsible need to feel the full force of the law,” she said. “I will also be focused on ensuring all young people in Wyndham get the opportunities they
need to succeed in life, like a good education and employment opportunities.” Ms Connolly and Ms Sheffield-Brotherton said they had each reached out to African and South Sudanese community leaders in a bid to understand the issues and offer their support, while Mr Goodfellow said he had links to the African community through his children’s school.

“A few Sudanese mothers at my children’s school stopped me to voice their disappointment in the events that happened in Wyndham Vale … they, like most families, want a safe neighbourhood for their children to grow up in,” Mr Goodfellow said. “We need mandatory jail sentences for repeat violent offenders. We need tough bail laws, respect for victims of crime, and laws which protect our police from violent criminal attacks like police car ramming. For too long the Andrews government has had a soft approach to crime and Victorians have had enough.” A phone poll conducted for The Age last week revealed that if the state election was held now, 36.1 per cent of respondents would vote Labor in the seat of Tarneit. Wyndham police Inspector Marty Allison said officers often patrolled the streets of Tarneit at night, including near the park, in an effort to boost safety.
Wyndham council has recommended security guards be posted at a Tarneit park that is becoming known for anti-social behaviour and late-night crime. Across the past few months, Star Weekly has highlighted the concerns of residents who live near the Ecoville Community Park in Cindia Crescent. They say they are too scared to visit the site at night because of large groups of youths who hang out there reportedly seen fighting and carrying weapons. Drug paraphernalia is also frequently found

However, Wyndham Cr Josh Gilligan said residents living near the park had contacted him after they were sent a letter alerting them to a proposed Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal application to dissolve the body corporate responsible for the park. Cr Gilligan said some of the residents were worried this meant the park could be sold off to make way for a future residential development. Cr Gilligan said preserving open space was important to the Wyndham community.
Last month officers arrested a 15-year-old boy at the park, who was charged with robbery and theft. Inspector Allison said community leaders from the various cultural groups often conducted outreach work at the park to engage with youths. The Melbourne Playgrounds website, which reviews parks across the city, has recently put up a post about the Ecoville park. The review described the park as a “nightmare location� that was “wrecked and covered in graffiti�. Star Weekly has contacted Strata Data, the

In addition to having a studio, these days Bannerjee is an art teacher and is studying for a PhD in creative arts at Deakin University. “Yes, it has been a tough journey, as any career change would be I guess, but I would not trade it for anything else,� she said. An artwork by Bannerjee, titled FADE, was last month voted as the winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Wyndham Art Prize exhibition. “When I found out that FADE had won the

A 10-year-old girl is in a critical condition, and three other people injured, after a crash in Wyndham Vale on Monday night. There is no paws in sight for this busy pup, who is on a mission to complete a special bucket list. Five-year-old greyhound Tony was last month diagnosed with spindle cell sarcoma in one of his back legs. His owners, Helen Garvey and Brad Thiele, said they were devastated to hear this meant Tony would not have long to live. Rather than dwelling on the negatives, the Point Cook couple decided to fill Tony’s final days with as much happiness and love as possible. The couple created a bucket list for Tony
before he passes away – and appearing in the newspaper is one of his “wishes�. Tony has ticked off a few of his wishes – he’s eaten a Bunnings sausage; had pancakes and eggs on toast for breakfast; and met Santa Claus at an RSPCA event. The handsome pooch has enjoyed an ice-cream and a picnic – with a dog-friendly cake smash – at a park near Altona beach and he went trick-or-treating at Halloween while dressed as a pumpkin, at the office of his Craigieburn vet, Dr Michael Bell. Ms Garvey said she and Mr Thiele adopted
Tony in July last year, through the Greyhound Adoption Program. She said she hoped Tony would live until Christmas and be able to complete a few more items on his bucket list. “I would love for him to be able to meet a mailman, meet a fireman, sit in a police car and visit the elderly,� Ms Garvey said. Police have charged a man following an armed robbery at a supermarket in Wyndham Vale on Sunday night. It is alleged three men brandishing knives stole cash and cigarettes from the Honour Avenue store about 9.30pm. Detectives arrested an 18-year-old Wyndham Vale man on Monday afternoon and charged him with armed robbery. He was also charged in relation to an armed robbery at a supermarket in Hoppers Crossing on November 13. Police are still searching for two other men in relation to the Wyndham Vale incident. Street gangs have “continually over-run� a Tarneit park despite hundreds of thousands of dollars being spent on security services for nearby residents. The owners corporation manager of the Cindia Crescent park, Strata Data, last week said it “had made many attempts� to “return a safe place back to the owners and residents�. “This is a particularly complicated issue and one that the owners and residents at Ecoville shouldn’t have to deal with,� Strata Data said in a statement. “An owners corporation does not have the necessary power or resources to deal with street gangs.� The Cindia Crescent park has become notorious for vandalism and criminal activity, with numerous reports of underage drinking, drug taking and anti-social behaviour in the past 12 months. Nearby residents have described the park as “a joke�. “We’ve had African youths in numbers upwards of 80 destroying the place and running wild,� one resident said late last year. “Some [residents] say they’re too afraid to leave their home after dark.� Strata Data has until now declined to respond to Star Weekly requests for comment. In a statement released last week, Strata Data said that it “had made many attempts to effect a resolution� in the past 18 months. “This has included holding numerous meetings with local council, Victoria Police, community outreach groups and community elders – all to try and return a safe space back to the owners and residents at Ecoville,� the statement read.

Leaders call for respect Leaders of the South Sudanese community have called for a respectful and balanced debate about youth crime. Dr Santino Atem Deng, who was born in Sudan and now lives in Tarneit, has completed a PhD focused on the challenges faced by South Sudanese parents in Australia. Dr Deng said most South Sudanese who had immigrated to Australia since the 1990s were just like other Australians. “Most of us, who came here as adults, are doing very well – educated and working,� he said. He said it was important that Australians realised that “the minority� of youths from African backgrounds who committed crimes were not representative of the entire community. “If we have balance in the media and they also talk to leaders in the community and publish our success stories, rather than all negative, that would be good,� he said. Richard Deng, from the South Sudanese Community Association of Victoria, said several people within the community were running programs to help engage their young people. With Wyndham resident Emily Yuille, Mr Deng helps to run a South Sudanese volunteer patrol group to engage with young people in Wyndham.
“We need a program to support kids if they have no support at home, or if they encounter racism,� Mr Deng said.

New plan to tackle growth pain In November, Victorians will go to the polls and choose to re-elect the Labor Party for its second consecutive term, or bring in the Coalition. Charlene Macaulay sat down with Opposition Leader Matthew Guy to discuss his plans for the north-west, and what he sees as the big issues. What do you consider to be the biggest issues facing the western suburbs, and what will you do to address those issues if elected? Like every part of Melbourne, I think the west is suffering from a crime wave that is being ignored by the state government. Crime is up more than 20 per cent since Daniel Andrews came to power, and he’s put out a lot of press releases, but has done not much to actually deal with the crime wave. We want to make Caroline Springs a 24-hour police station considering the extent of the population growth in the north-west. We also want to bring in bail reform, mandatory sentencing for offences against the person, and more to the point, change the attitude in the justice system so that the justice system works for those people who obey the law, not protect those who break it. In relation to the western suburbs specifically, I’d say one of the issues the west is feeling more than anywhere in the state is unmanaged population growth. I believe we need to fix our growth boundary and start moving population growth to regional centres, to decentralise … we’ll have a minister for decentralisation, a state government department focused on
decentralisation, we’ll have immediately a Minister for Geelong, a Geelong planning statement, a Geelong infrastrasture audit, all done in the first six months to focus sustainable growth on a place like Geelong earlier and to help take some of that pressure off Melbourne’s west. Tell me more about your vision for Geelong. I think Geelong should be a city of half a million by the mid part of this century. It’s a metro area of about 185,000 now … but it can’t just be about dumping people in Geelong, it needs to be done sustainably and sensibly. It’s got a north facing city centre, so it could easily have greater density, it’s got activity areas that could grow, again with medium density, it’s got areas and suburbs that should be protected through a neighbourhood residential zone, it’s got growth areas that can be managed. The western suburbs have long held a reputation for being Labor’s heartland. Considering the margins, do you believe you could actually win a seat come November? If so, which seats do you have your eye on, and why?
There’s a couple. Telmo Languiller’s seat [Tarneit], where he’s retiring, gives us enormous opportunity. Tim Pallas doesn’t live in his own seat, he doesn’t care about Werribee, our candidate will be from Werribee. Jill Hennessy
doesn’t live in her seat. Don Nardella’s seat in Melton, I think, has enormous opportunities for the party. Go a bit further north in Sunbury, there’s a three per cent swing to us in the last election, and we have clear commitments for

Why have you chosen to focus on intersection removals, and how will the list of intersections be selected? RACV and TAC have got accident and congestion data, and that’s very important in choosing those locations. A natural progression of removing level crossings is to remove road intersections, because road intersections are just as congested. [Some] road intersections have 20,000 vehicle movements per day … that’s why removing some of them is very, very important to do. On top of that, having digital technology to analyse sequencing of traffic lights at the intersections near those eliminated will then help with arterial traffic flow. If elected, will you continue with Labor’s commitment to remove 50 level crossings by the end of 2022, and if so, will you keep to the list as it is, or will you review and change the remaining level crossings?

The homeless reality By Alesha Capone Werribee woman Jody Letts has gone from sleeping in a van to buying a new home. In 2015, Ms Letts and her teenage daughter ended up sleeping in their van because it was too difficult for them to afford accommodation on her disability pension. Ms Letts, who served in the Australian defence force for more than 10 years and left the army in 2001, said she wanted people to realise that no one becomes homeless by choice. After leaving the army, Ms Letts (pictured) started working full-time in the public service. She began experiencing severe back, neck and shoulder pain. Ms Letts, an East Timor veteran, was diagnosed with dental and musculoskeletal degeneration. Doctors declared she could not work, which Ms Letts described as the first step in a five-year “downward spiral” that led to her becoming homeless. But Ms Letts said that with assistance from a “phenomenal” Launch Housing case worker, she was able to access an early superannuation payment. She said CHP was hoping a current senate inquiry into the National Housing and Homelessness Agreement would lead to the federal government increasing its funding for homeless services and social housing. Recent media coverage of damage to the privately-owned Ecoville Park has unfortunately not contained all the facts. I am not underplaying recent events or the fear these and other incidents cause, but it’s important to get all the facts out. Firstly, Council neither accepts nor tolerates this behaviour. Although Council is limited in actions we can take as Ecoville is privately owned, we have acted. Council has issued formal notices to the Owners Corporation to clean up the site and we are working directly with Police and the Owners Corporation to take steps to have the site secured as a priority. We have also been working closely with local police and other agencies to make Wyndham safer and to engage young people in meaningful activities. Council met this week with the Minister for Police, Acting Premier Tim Pallas and Senior Victoria Police members to discuss steps being taken to deal with recent events as these are ultimately Policing issues. I’m pleased to note that 27 new uniformed police will be deployed to Wyndham in coming months. We are looking forward to the arrival of these additional resources and working closely with Police and Government to improve safety in Wyndham. Regards, Mayor Peter Maynard.

MY WYNDHAM Mary Sfameni, who remembers when Werribee’s population was just 9000, spent her childhood helping her parents in their market garden. The entrepreneur talks to Charlene Macaulay about running a business and giving back to the community. I was born in Werribee and I went to St Andrew’s Primary School and MacKillop College. I’ve watched Werribee grow from a small town to the city that it is. What was Werribee like when you were a child? I remember there was a sign on the Princes Highway that had [Werribee’s population] and it was about 9000 residents, and every year that would go up. Life was good growing up. We were able to leave the windows and doors open in the middle of the night and not be afraid of anything. My parents were Italian immigrants and they came to Australia back in the ’50s and settled in Tower Road, where they had a market garden. My brothers and myself went to the farm every day and helped with whatever needed to be done … we would be packing lettuces, picking tomatoes, cucumbers and broccoli. You opened the first day spa in Werribee in 1985. How did that come about? I’ve always had a passion for the beauty industry, and after trying a few reception jobs, I knew I had to do something for myself. A few months after completing my diploma at the age of 20, I decided to open a salon in Werribee. I actually went to the National Australia Bank and they gave me a loan … it was given to me just on my enthusiasm. These days you’ve got to jump through hoops for anything like that. That’s when I opened
the Werribee Beauty Centre, and it was later known as the Ella Bache Salon. These days I own and operate Forever Young Werribee and recently opened a day spa in Point Cook, with my business partner, called Seasons Spa Retreat. You’ve also done some TV work. About 10 years ago, I was on the board of directors for Channel 31 and was vice-president of Italian Television Melbourne. I used to have my own TV show – M Zone – which screened on Channel 31. We also used to film the Weerama Festival and one year I interviewed Julia Gillard – she was judging the dunny race! You’re also a member of Hoppers Crossing Rotary and recently did a fundraiser for the Werribee Mercy Hospital. Why is it important to you to give back to the community? I do enjoy doing that and I think giving back to the community is really important. If we could all just put in a little bit, it would make a big difference. If there was something you could change about Wyndham, what would it be? In terms of business, I would say the parking problems in Werribee. I feel for the people that … have to walk 15 minutes to get to their car. And if they work like me, until nine or 10 o’clock at night, it’s pretty scary. More importantly, for the actual retailers – the lack of parking in Werribee drives people to go the plaza.

Werribee Shire Council has commenced roadworks which are necessary for installation of signals at the intersection of Watton Street/Duncans Road/ Station Street. The major feature of these roadworks involves the closure of the western entrance into Station Street adjoining the Werribee Hotel.
The Federal and State Governments and the Werribee Council will spend $905,000 in an effort to stop the Werribee River from flooding every three or four years. The Minister for Water Resources Mr Wilkes announced on Thursday that the flood plan was submitted by the State Rural Water Commission to the Federal Government’s Water Resources Assistance Program and grants were approved.

SPORT Tiger recruit ready for a great experience “[Werribee chief executive] Mark Penaluna and those sorts of blokes gave me the opportunity way back then, and now I hope I can reward them with some good footy and bring my experience to the table.” Moloney’s first stint with Werribee was in 2010 after he graduated from the Geelong Falcons in the TAC Cup. He played 11 senior games for the Tigers in three seasons, but was a dominant player in the development league team, winning consecutive best-and-fairest awards in 2011 and 2012. Moloney’s best VFL season to date came with Collingwood in 2015, when he claimed the team’s best-and-fairest award and collected VFL team of the year honours. Once a vice-captain at the Magpies, Moloney’s leadership qualities were attractive for Werribee and he is looking forward to
taking some of the youngsters under his wing. “There are a lot of young players here and I’d like to use a bit of my experience to help them,” Moloney said. “It might be their first or second year and this is my ninth year … I want them to all be able to play for eight or nine years and make the most of their VFL opportunity while they’ve got it.” Lamont has already seen Moloney have a positive impact in his brief time back at Avalon Airport Oval. “He’s thoroughly enjoyed reconnecting with the club and a number of players,” Lamont said. “We’re really confident that he’s going to be a real leader and role model in our midfield.” Lance Jenkinson
Werribee fit for a fight By Lance Jenkinson Werribee is riding a wave of momentum into the new year in Victorian Sub-District Cricket. The Tigers will take to the field against bottom-of-the-ladder Coburg for a crucial one-day game at Chirnside Park on Saturday on the back of a two-game winning streak and strong form in the final month of last year in the north-west first XI division. “We had a really good month before Christmas,” Tigers captain-coach Tim O’Brien said. “You go back to that St Bernard’s game, when we made 250 and got washed out the next week – I thought we would have been pretty hard to defeat that game. “We had a tie against Ivanhoe, which we probably should’ve won, then we had the wins over Altona and Hoppers Crossing, so we’ve had a pretty good month after a pretty poor start.” Stirring wins over their closest rivals, Altona and Hoppers Crossing, meant Werribee’s players were able to enjoy their mid-season break. Those games were do-or-die for the Tigers and they delivered under pressure. At home against Altona, in-form opener Matt Dean blasted 109 and O’Brien added 89 to lead Werribee to a commanding 76-run victory. On its short trip to Hoppers Crossing a week later, it was the Werribee bowlers who dazzled in a seven-wicket win, with youngster Jack Budd leading the way with 3-20. The two-week block signalled a turning point in the Tigers season. “Hopefully we can take that momentum going into the second half of the year,” O’Brien said. “We’ve still got to win most of our games from now on – we probably can’t drop a game … but at least it’s in our own hands. “Last year, we had to win the last four games to make it and we did it. So we know we can do it and hopefully we can do that again this year.” Werribee is wary of the threat posed by a Coburg side that is desperate to start the new year off on a winning note after a winless first half of the season. It will be just one of a number of must-win games for the Tigers as they try to close the nine-point gap between them and the top six. “In the shorter form, it only takes one player to take the game away from you,” O’Brien said. “It’s a really important game for us. If we drop that, it’s going to be really hard for us to play finals … if we can win that game, we’ll take some momentum into the two-day format. “Our one-day form has been good the last few games, so hopefully we can continue that.” 40 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 10, 2018
IN THE DOGHOUSE Trent Churchill was a star at the Werribee Football club during his 103-game career earning a reputation as a fierce competitor, a great leader and a nice bloke. Nearly one year ago when he was one of the casualties of the Bourke Street attack he needed all those qualities. “Churchy” suffered head injuries which have affected his memory, and his left leg was shattered in several places. One saving grace is the memory loss means he has no recollection of the incident. A work mate walking to lunch with him was killed. He is putting his life back together with a second child due in May and his annual date with the Lorne Pier to Pub swim this weekend. Former teammate Marcus O’Connor said to him: “Life is not a dress rehearsal. You only get one go at it. It’s here to enjoy.” Trent is living by that mantra today and for the rest of his life.

Football Club’s days are numbered and the club could not be happier. Chief executive Mark Penaluna and the staff are counting down the days until they move into the Avalon Airport Oval following the $11.75 million redevelopment. The challenges of being a stand-alone club will make it a year to remember. The first home game will be on Saturday, April 14 against the Casey Demons. For the first game of the season Werribee travels to Torquay for the annual seaside game against the Cats on Easter Sunday.

second half of the cricket season does not offer much for a few clubs. Werribee and Hoppers Crossing would need a big form reversal to figure in the VSDCA finals. Werribee looks the more likely if it can get it together, it certainly has the talent. The Tigers have three home games out of five while Hoppers has a single home fixture. Yarraville Club Cricket Club is on top of the VTCA ladder with the top batsman and bowler in the competition – Konrad Kurta (407 runs) and James Damjanovski (16 wickets). Spotswood is third, with Seddon just out in fifth position. The VTCA round from last weekend will be played on February 4.

Werribee Tigers have brought back the well-travelled Ben Moloney ahead of a return to stand-alone status in the Victorian Football League. Moloney is excited to be returning to his original VFL club following stints with AFL-aligned Collingwood and Geelong, earning a reputation as one of the league’s top inside midfielders. The 26-year-old has played 89 senior VFL games, but none with a stand-alone club – a key driver to his return to Watton Street. He already knew the likes of captain Michael Sodomaco and, after a chat with coach John Lamont, concluded the Tigers were offering an opportunity too good to pass up. “There may not have been an opportunity at Geelong for me,” he said. “I just wanted to make the most of the time while I’ve got it.
