Triple the birthday fun It’s the kind of one-in-a-million happening that couldn’t be planned. Three generations of one family – grandma Leanne Wilson, her daughter, Kelly, and Kelly’s daughter, Scarlett Szkudlarski – have the same birthday. Little Scarlett came into the world on March 31 this year following a speedy labour at Werribee Mercy Hospital. Her mum, Kelly, was born on March 31, 1988, and grandma Leanne, on March 31, 1963. All three were delivered naturally. Kelly said when she found out that Scarlett’s due date was March 30 – only one day off her and her mum’s birthday – she had her fingers crossed for the birthday trifecta. “On my birthday, me and [two-year-old son] Hunter had breakfast, sat down to open up a present, and afterwards, as I stood up, my water started to trickle,” the Wyndham Vale resident said. “That was 8.10am … and she was born at 11.53am. It’s beautiful, because she’s my first daughter and I’m my mum’s first daughter.” Her mum, Leanne, added: “I was there for the actual birth, which was fantastic. It was meant to be.” Kelly and Leanne have already worked out that when Scarlett turns 21, Kelly will be celebrating her 50th birthday and Leanne her 75th. KELLY, SCARLETT AND LEANNE

Khan noted for no-show By Charlene Macaulay A Wyndham councillor has been missing in action for two-thirds of all council briefings since being re-elected five months ago – more absences than all other councillors combined. Councillor Intaj Khan attended in full only three of 29 briefings, workshops and forums between November last year and March. He was noted as absent for 10 of the briefings, an apology for nine, and was late for seven, according to an attendance record tabled at each council meeting. An apology is recorded when a councillor
says they will not be attending, while a councillor is considered to be absent when they are a no-show without notifying the council. In comparison, Wyndham’s 10 other councillors collectively notched up 18 apologies over the same period. Councillor Mia Shaw missed four meetings, councillors Peter Maynard, Heather Marcus and John Gibbons were apologies for three apiece, and councillors Walter Villagonzalo, Kim McAliney, Tony Hooper, Josh Gilligan, and Henry Barlow each missed one. Councillor Aaron An has not missed any. Cr Khan disputed the figures, despite
approving the records at each council meeting. He attributed his absences to being unwell and spending six weeks in India to attend his sister’s wedding in December. He could not provide Star Weekly with exact dates of his overseas trip. “I’ve been in many, many organisational meetings – I’m not sure how that’s not coming up. Sometimes I may be running late … but I’ve been to many meetings. “Councillors get all of this material in advance, and I read the material before I go to a council meeting. “As per the law, you have to attend council

meetings, and briefings are also required, but if you are sick, what can you do?” “I’ve attended many community functions … there are many councillors who are not attending community functions.” Cr Khan said he’d like to see the start time of briefings pushed back. But Wyndham council chief executive Kelly Grigsby said starting times of briefings had already changed to accommodate councillors with work commitments. “Whilst attendance at councillor briefings is not a legislative requirement, it is something that we actively encourage,” Ms Grigsby said.

Nature strip cop call-up By Charlene Macaulay A Wyndham councillor is keen to see the nature strip police out in force in a bid to beautify residential streets. Speaking about the council’s new road management plan last week, councillor Mia Shaw called on residents to take pride in their front nature strips, warning that derelict properties could attract inspections by council officers. “Taking pride in our city and our nature strips is an important priority for me,” she said. “Residents are responsible for maintaining their nature strips, which may include mowing, weeding and litter control. “Nature strips are an important part of our urban environment and the appeal of our local residential streets. “They can also add to property values … many residents already look after our nature strips and do so with great pride. Unfortunately, there are some residents that do not. “I am taking a particular interest in this over the next four years, and have had residents
already contact me since being elected about the state of some nature strips. “It’s important residents are aware that these incidents may be followed up by council officers.” Nature strip maintenance is one of the topics covered within the council’s new road management plan, which covers the inspection, maintenance and repair of roads and road-related infrastructure in Wyndham. The updated plan, which is out for consultation, proposes a range of changes, including: • Improved maintenance action times for asphalt surface defects, unsealed shoulders along main and collector roads, warning sign repairs and emergency road cleaning; • Increased compliance inspections for main roads and street trees hanging over power lines.; • More frequent inspections for road surface defects and road-related signage; and • The addition of condition inspections for council-owned public lighting. The updated roads management plan is out for public consultation until May 4.

Council goes live on the net It’s official – Wyndham residents can watch council meetings from home. The council last week streamed its April meeting live, with 84 viewers tuning in. The meeting has had another 180 views since it was uploaded to YouTube the following day. Mayor Henry Barlow said recordings would be put on the council’s website. “This will allow all of those residents who find it difficult to attend meetings in person to watch us live … or, for people who have other commitments on Tuesday nights, the recording can be downloaded,” Cr Barlow said, adding that broadcasts should usually be available on the website within 24 hours. So you think you can dance? Whether you know your way around the dance floor, or think you have two left feet, celebrity dancer Jarryd Byrne (pictured) thinks anyone can enjoy dancing. The Altona North man – who has been dancing since walking into his first dance class in Wagga Wagga when he was eight – is trained in Latin American, ballroom, salsa and hip hop, and has competed nationally and internationally. This has led to roles on So You Think You Can Dance, Burn the Floor Floor, and three seasons on Dancing with the Stars, where he was paired with Jesinta Franklin, Ricki-Lee Coulter and Ash Pollard. Most recently, Byrne spent two years touring Australia playing Nathan Starkey in Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom the Musical. He has since settled in the west and brought his dance and fitness company, Fit2Move, to the area, running two days of classes per week at the Iramoo Community Centre in Wyndham Vale. “I was always average at everything, but dancing for some reason just clicked,” he said. “My whole life was about competing for Australia and trying to become Australian champion in Latin and ballroom, so I never really set out to be on TV or stage.” Charlene Macaulay

By Alexandra Laskie Sunshine Hospital will almost quadruple the number of cancer patients in clinical trials in the next three years. A significant grant from Cancer Council Victoria, announced last Wednesday, will allow Western Health’s oncology department to ramp up the number of patients accessing clinical trials from 120 to about 420 by 2020. The hospital is one of three to share in a $2.5 million grant designed to broaden access to trials, particularly for people with migrant backgrounds. Cancer Council Victoria chief executive Todd Harper said the grant gave the organisation an opportunity to share advances in cancer treatment with patients of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. “The tyranny of distance makes it hard for people to be involved in a trial,� he said. “We want to expand trials into the western region and broaden access to different cultural groups.� Mr Harper said clinical trials were a valid treatment option. “In fact, standard treatments that extend and improve the lives of countless patients today are the result of clinical trials of the past,� he said. Fifteen cancer treatment providers applied for the grant, but just Western Health, the Border Medical Oncology Research Unit and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre were successful.
Western Health chief executive Alex Cockram said there was a great need for improved access to clinical trials in Melbourne’s west. “This very generous grant from the Cancer Council Victoria is good news for our cancer patients, and also Western Health’s first-rate oncology clinicians,� Associate Professor Cockram said. “Cancer incidence in the western region of Melbourne is the highest of any Melbourne metropolitan area.� Western Health cancer services director Michael Green said about half of all children diagnosed with cancer became part of clinical trials. “This has led to a great improvement in children’s survival rates because children have been able to access promising treatments, and the evidence for their effectiveness has been obtained quickly,� Professor Green said. But only about six per cent of adult cancer patients participated in cancer clinical trials, and the rate was much lower among minority groups, he said. Kim Nyugen is among the 120 patients involved in clinical trials at the hospital. The 65-year-old grandmother said the treatment, which started two years ago and involves a single injection once a month to control her breast cancer, has given her her life back. “I now live a very normal life,� she said. She is hoping others can experience the same benefits.

Footy star’s whisker bid Move over Jimmy Bartel – Werribee Football Club’s Nathan Laracy is taking a leaf out of the Brownlow medallist’s book and will be shaving his beard off later this month to raise money for Werribee Mercy Hospital’s new critical care unit. The 27-year-old Hoppers Crossing resident, who has spent the past 12 months growing his beard, said someone suggested a fundraising shave to him late last year and the idea stuck. “The Werribee Mercy are doing really awesome things and as a football club, we do a fair bit for the community, so it all worked out well,� he said. “I thought, if I’m going to get rid of it, I might as well get rid of it for a decent reason.�
Laracy will brave the shave at Werribee Mercy on April 26, hoping to raise $10,000. The critical care unit is part of an $85 million state government-funded hospital upgrade that will include eight critical care beds, 56 inpatient beds and six operating theatres. The Werribee Hospital Foundation and the Mercy Health Foundation have created an appeals committee to raise $2 million in the coming 18 months to help fit-out the new unit. Lane works to ease gridlock By Charlene Macaulay Congestion between Point Cook and Hoppers Crossing will be eased once Hoppers Lane gets its upgrade. The stretch of road between Sneydes Road and the Princes Freeway will be repaved, footpaths, drainage and fencing will go in, and signage, line-marking, landscaping and nature strips will be included. Wyndham council last week awarded a $2.01 million tender for the works to Negri Contractors.
The Hoppers Lane upgrade is expected to begin in May and be complete by September. The successful tenderer has already completed a number of road upgrades across Wyndham, including the Dohertys Road duplication and Thompson Court, as well as other laneway reconstructions. It is also currently laying the new Princes Highway service road. Cr Tony Hooper said the upgrade to the Sneydes Road interchange has increased traffic in the area, bringing forward the need for Hoppers Lane to be upgraded.

He said the road works would help alleviate congestion. The contract was awarded the same week the state government announced a consortium, headed by John Holland and CPB Contractors, as the winning bidders for the $5.5 billion West Gate Tunnel project.
Construction is tipped to start early next year, and will include two three-lane, 4km-long tunnels under Yarraville, connecting the West Gate Freeway to the Port of Melbourne, CityLink and the Melbourne CBD. Wyndham drivers can expect to slash 10 minutes off their CBD trips once the second river crossing is built, state roads minister Luke Donnellan estimates. “For motorists in Wyndham, less congestion and more reliable travel times will mean less time spent in stop-start traffic and more time where they want to be,” Mr Donnellan said.
Mates march together Lyle Raison was born into a family of servicemen. While his father never joined the military, all of Mr Raison’s uncles, cousins and great-uncles served. From these ranks, six great-uncles were killed in the First World War, and two were killed in WWII. But not even the heavy family casualties could not stop Mr Raison from enlisting with the army the moment he turned 17 in 1964. “Death doesn’t worry me, never has. I thought, if I was to die for the country, that’s pretty noble,” he said. “They talk today about the spirit of Anzac and all that sort of thing, but that was never the conversations we had at home – it was all about the mates, the hardships, and sticking together. It was real cold, hard facts.” In the late 1960s, Mr Raison did a nine-month tour of Vietnam, serving with the fourth battalion. He was later deployed to Malaysia
in 1976 with the first battalion, guarding the airbase there. All up, Mr Raison, who went up the ranks to become warrant officer class one, was 38 years with the army, including 25 years full-time and the rest in the army reserves working on special projects. He also did a lot of counselling and veteran’s advocate work before retiring in 2002. This Anzac Day, he’ll gather with a group of mates and remember his great-uncles. Werribee RSL will hold an Anzac Day march on April 23, starting from Wyndham Cultural Centre and finishing with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Werribee cenotaph. orking from home can be both a joy and a pain. I cannot begin to tell you how good it is not to have to face peak hour traffic … it drives me mad on those occasions when I do enter the fray. I do miss the interaction with workmates – to a degree – but I don’t miss office politics. The biggest problems are a temptation to be slack and procrastinate about tasks, and also that there’s no ‘off’ switch – checking and responding to emails at midnight is not uncommon. The traditional workplace is changing and how we source different services is really changing with it. This past week I have used one of the internet-app sites to get some domestic chores done. What a revelation – the process was simple, painless and much more efficient than I imagined. The fact you manage the cost is a major bonus. There is no “mate, it was a bigger job than I thought, so I’ve added an extra $100 to the bill … make that $60 if you give me cash.” I can only go by my experiences and those of friends, and I have yet to hear those usual
horror stories. That advertising cliché – no job too big or too small – is actually true with this service. You post the job, and if no-one wants to do it for the price you quote, they will not respond. There is a lot about doing business on the internet and phone apps that I still think is a bit dodgy, but this seems to work. The area that seems to have improved is communication between parties. There is no haggling, something I am uncomfortable with … it intimidates people on both sides of negotiations. Being behind the keyboard is an advantage, and not in an anonymous way. This type of service is growing, and traditional business will need to address ways to be competitive in both price and delivery, not to mention the time frame. We had a parcel delivered to the other side of the city within a few hours for half what some companies had quoted, and the goods were personally handed to the recipient, not just left at reception or the door. Convenience, competitive fixed pricing, prompt response and completion – now there is a concept. ■

Hunt on after train attack
Police are hunting a man who assaulted two female commuters at Hoppers Crossing train station. The male offender and his victims were on board a Werribee-bound train about 3pm on February 12. When the train arrived at Hoppers Crossing station, the man dragged one woman off the train and assaulted her on the platform. When the second woman attempted to intervene, she was punched in the face. The offender left the station on a red and black-coloured bicycle. Big bucks flow into city By Charlene Macaulay Werribee’s own private hospital, new business headquarters and housing estates are driving forces behind a record building spend across Wyndham. New Victorian Building Authority (VBA) figures reveal building permits for projects totalling $1.7 billion were issued across the city during 2016, putting the Wyndham spend second only to the city of Melbourne. It’s the third consecutive year Wyndham’s building works have passed the billion-dollar mark, with 2015 bringing in $1.22 billion of
works, and $1.38 billion in 2014. Last year, permits were issued for a new $43.6 million St Vincent’s Private Hospital Werribee and an aged care facility – which is currently under construction – making it the biggest investment in Wyndham last year. The NewCold Asia-Pacific headquarters under construction at Truganina, which will store frozen food, is another big-ticket item. Other notable permits include one to construct 55 dwellings at Point Cook, a project valued at $12.7 million, and construction of an acoustic fence at Tarneit, also valued at $12.7 million.
VBA chief executive Prue Digby said Wyndham has recorded strong growth in the value of building permits in all building use categories, with $1.17 billion in domestic building permits. Wyndham council’s future-focused economy portfolio holder Walter Villagonzalo said it was great to see businesses setting up their company headquarters in Wyndham. Cr Villagonzalo said he’d like the state government to pitch in more to help the council address the city’s infrastructure gap. “We’re doing our best in council to address this growth,� he said.
A Hoppers Crossing homeowner whose pergola failed to comply with a building order has been slapped with a two-year good behaviour bond. The man, who was charged with breaching the Building Act, escaped conviction when he fronted Werribee Magistrate’s Court recently, but has been ordered to rework the pergola to meet building standards. A building surveyor alerted the Victorian Building Authority after the homeowner did not adhere to the building order issued for the work. The homeowner also did not have the pergola inspected by the relevant building surveyor within the required timeframe. Magistrate Jennifer Grubissa said the homeowner was let off without conviction due to his previous good record, his co-operation with the VBA investigation, and the fact he was taking all reasonable steps to bring the structure up to standard. VBA chief executive Prue Digby said it was important that any building work – including renovations or additions – complies with building permits to ensure the works meet minimum safety standards. “Whatever you do, don’t ignore building notices or building orders issued to you by the relevant building surveyor,� Ms Digby said. “Familiarise yourself with your project and your responsibilities.� Charlene Macaulay

Forty years in the line of fire By Charlene Macaulay When Hoppers Crossing Fire Brigade first opened its doors 40 years ago, it was a much different service to that of today. For starters, it was originally called Mossfiel Fire Brigade, and was based in a small green shed across the road from its current Derrimut Road premises – the fire truck was parked at the telephone exchange. There were no mobile phones or pagers back then; instead, there was a telephone tree that would alert a network of people to come in as needed.

It wasn’t until the brigade moved into its own purpose-built premises in 1988 that it was rebranded as Hoppers Crossing Fire Brigade. Today, the brigade has more than 50 members and averages about 1500 call-outs each year, making it one of the busiest CFA stations in the state. It also has a junior brigade that competes in firefighting championships across Victoria. Glen Jones, who has been a member for almost 40 years, said the brigade’s strong family ties had kept him going. “It’s a great life, the CFA,” he said. “We served this community for 24 years as a full volunteer brigade, never had a tragedy, never lost a life.” Len Trawn, who has served for the past 35 years, remembers one house fire at which the children had just had fire training at school. They were able to wake mum and dad up, and

get the whole family out of the house safely. Peter Parry, meanwhile, had an interesting introduction to the CFA. “I started a fire by accident up in Melton. I had a barbecue and put the water on the
barbecue thinking I’d put it out … the cinder went over the fence and started a grass fire. “The captain of the Melton brigade came along, put it out, and suggested I join the fire brigade and learn how to put a fire out.”

All fired up for appeal This Friday, everyone is being asked to give so others may grow. Up to 200 firefighters and volunteers from the Point Cook Country Fire Authority will take to the streets for an annual Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal fundraiser. Point Cook CFA volunteer Rebecca Millar said they would be tin-rattling at major Point Cook intersections and door-knocking homes in Point Cook, Sanctuary Lakes and Seabrook, hoping to beat last year’s fundraising total of $41,062. The brigade has been collecting for the appeal for the past 15 years, initially helping out Werribee Fire Brigade with its collection. Point Cook CFA has raised $215,779 as a standalone brigade since 2008.
As a whole, the CFA raised more than $1.7 million for last year’s Good Friday Appeal – more than 10 per cent of the total amount raised. Ms Millar said fundraising for this year began with a first aid information session jointly hosted by Point Cook Fire Brigade and Results First Aid Training. Good Friday appeal director Anne Randall said the money raised would make a huge difference to young patients at the Royal Children’s Hospital. “We’re so grateful to Point Cook Fire Brigade … for their generosity and support,” she said. How did you become a cartoonist?
What kind of cancer did you have?
I used to live with a graffiti artist up in Queensland. I just sat there one day drawing Fred Flintstone and thought, ‘Wow, I could do this without even looking at the picture’. So I started drawing Simpsons characters. I had a little stand at Werribee Plaza drawing cartoon characters and it went from there. I’ve got a couple of agents and people hear about me through my website. I’m drawing on Easter Sunday at Etihad Stadium for Collingwood’s presidential lunch. I get some good corporate gigs.
Bowel cancer. I was diagnosed in 2009, when [my wife] Monika was about five months pregnant with our son, Xavier. The chemotherapy and radiotherapy means I can’t have any more kids.
You have six different jobs – run me through them. I’m a school PE teacher part-time, a cartoonist, a balloon artist, a presenter for VicRoads; I do L-to-P training for VicRoads; and in January, I drive all the tennis players around for the Australian Open. All my jobs have come to me in one way or another. I’m not stressed out, which is the important thing. I was diagnosed with cancer after being under some massive stress at work, so I gave up stressful work for my health.
What’s it like driving tennis players around? Do you get to choose your passengers? You basically roll up and get a ticket and that says who you’re picking up, where you’re picking them up from and where they’re going. I’ve driven the Williams sisters, Andy Murray. Most of them are happy to chat. The top 10 are great, but number 400 in the world – who has just scraped through on a qualifier – think they’re it. How did you meet Monika? Monika and I met at the gym. Our wedding celebrant called me the stalker, but that’s untrue – Monika hunted me down. She was doing the same training and I just followed her around doing my activities and asked her out for a coffee … she shut me down immediately. Then, two weeks later, we bumped into each other after the Grand Prix at the pub and that was it.

Mayoral Column Several Councillors have brought parking problems at local train stations to my attention following Facebook posts and contact from nearby residents over the last few weeks. All Councillors appreciate the frustrations commuters have with inadequate parking at train stations as we get contacted about the problems. You may not know Council has done a lot to advocate for more parking spaces with some success in the past, but we have more advocacy to do. On behalf of Councillors I’m therefore appealing to everyone to show common courtesy and respect for the safety and convenience of fellow commuters and nearby residents. Dropping people off on pedestrian crossings is not safe within stations or adjacent to them and parking in nearby time-limited parking spots for longer than allowed or in no standing areas where parking is prohibited is unsafe and inconvenient. Council, VicTrack and local Police have been targeting enforcement at these two stations as we have different areas of responsibility to patrol (within train station land and outside train station land). Please make other parking arrangements in the interests of safety and respecting other commuters and nearby residents and pass on this information to other residents and visitors you might know. Be a good egg this Easter and give blood. That’s the message from the Australian Red Cross Blood Service as it tries to overcome an annual blood donation shortfall. As part of the drive, the Werribee blood donor centre is hoping to get another 70 people through its doors this week to help patients in need. Blood services spokesman Leigh Johnston said there was always a shortfall of blood donations this time each year because many people go away for the Easter long weekend. He called on both existing and new donors to

Salon happy to share A Werribee salon is collecting sanitary items to help women in need. Brazilian Butterfly is calling on customers and passers-by to donate pads and tampons for Share the Dignity, a charity that helps homeless women and women fleeing domestic violence. Owner Vanessa Richard said the salon’s efforts were going well. “I think it’s great if we can help those in need,” Ms Richard said. “So far, it’s gone fantastic. Irresponsible driving has produced a death trap at the corner of Synnot Street and Duncan’s Road, Werribee since the introduction of the Statcon intersection control. Always a hazardous intersection the irresponsibility of motorists has made driving through it a game of Russian roulette, especially under wet conditions.
Veterinary services in Werribee have received a $500,000 boost to their work in developing a drug that will dramatically improve thoroughbred racehorse breeding around the world. The researchers from the Melbourne University Veterinary Science Clinic have been working on the new drug for the past three years but their research will be backed by a pharmaceutical company.
Police are urging witnesses to step forward in the search for a prowler who indecently assaulted two young girls in Hoppers Crossing on Easter Monday. They believe the man preyed on at least three other girls before he attacked the youngsters, both aged 12.
Wyndham council has called on the state government to introduce tough new powers to protect local laws officers against serious assault, verbal threats, and intimidation from members of the public. The proposal, by Cr Kim McAliney, to be put to the Municipal Association of Victoria, specifically called for strict penalties against any members of the public for this behaviour.

GROW YOUR OWN There is nothing quite so rewarding as growing your own fruit and veg. A good friend of mine is having a ball growing a variety of vegetables, and you might say I was green with envy when she showed me photos of her latest harvest – this stunning batch of multi-coloured peppers! She chargrilled them and they came up a treat.

My folks generally were/are the prime cooks in our house. Saying that though, I can cook if given a simple recipe, but baking is my strong point.
Part of the joy of growing your own is sharing your harvest with like-minded souls. A perfect place to do so is the Wyndham Community Garden Swap, held on the first Sunday each month at Mossfiel Reserve in Hoppers Crossing. Do you grown your own vegies? Send me some pics of your latest harvest. I’d love to know what culinary delights you’ve made out of your home-grown produce.
FB: What is your signature dish? NM: Sadly, it’s nothing flash – it always involves eggs. I am brunch queen so I rate my poached eggs and smashed avo or a good omelette with three French cheeses and mushrooms. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? NM: If I count my brunch obsession as a meal, it would have to be a good crunchy seeded GF-free toast with Vegemite, smashed avocado and feta, poached eggs, spinach, grilled tomatoes and mushies and hollandaise. The final supper would be crispy-skin salmon with mashed sweet potato, grilled cherry tomatoes, asparagus with balsamic glaze and goats cheese and lots of sauce – be it aioli or mushroom sauce. Disclosure: I LOVE SAUCE! Pudding: Freshly baked-scones with lashings of brandy cream and raspberry jam.

Pet rabbits need extra boost against virus At our vet clinic, we see a range of very cute pets, including rabbits. Rabbits are a lovely family pet, but are best suited to responsible older children or adult owners as they can be easily injured when handled.
Listening, caring and providing choices
Just like dogs and cats, pet rabbits need regular health examinations and vaccinations. A preventative vaccine exists for the fatal rabbit disease calicivirus. Spread by insects and direct contact, calicivirus causes sudden death with few warning signs. A more virulent strain of the virus has just been released in Victoria to control the wild rabbit population. For this reason, six-monthly vaccinations, rather than annually, are currently recommended for pet rabbits. Unfortunately there is no vaccination against the virus myxomatosis, or myxo.

SPORT Jets throw off the jinx of the Phoenix In NPL2 west, Werribee City is crying out for goals after yet another narrow loss. The Bees went down 1-0 to ladder-leader Northcote City on the road at John Cain Memorial Park. It was an honourable loss, but not the points they need to begin their charge up the ladder. It was the fourth time this season that the Bees have lost by a one-goal margin, which is frustrating for the fans. Werribee City will also be in action over Easter. Reds send a message By Lance Jenkinson Hoppers Crossing’s unblemished record was put under severe stress in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2 at Grange Reserve on Saturday. A goal down and a man down at half-time, the Reds still found a way in the second half. They overcame the dismissal of captain Brian Chesson to a red card by piling on three unanswered goals for an incredible comeback 3-1 win over Hume United to preserve their spot at the top of the table. Reds coach Shaun Barbara was always confident his side had goals in it despite going down to 10 men, but was not sure if it could keep United out, having lost defender Chesson. Barbara’s message at half-time to the Reds was about not losing faith and to still “go out and play football”. “I said to the boys, if we stick to what we do and know best, we can still win the game,” he said. “We just had to dig deep, band together and strategically get some football back into the game.” The tide began to turn early in the second half. Daniel Sweeney pulled a goal back for Hoppers Crossing seven minutes into the half and the match’s momentum changed instantly. “It was good that we got a goal quite early into the second half,” Barbara said. “It lifted the spirits and gave the boys a bit of belief.” On the hour mark, Hoppers Crossing took an unlikely lead through Taira Matsumoto. Instead of being burdened by going a man down, two goals in eight minutes were a reflection of how the Reds upped their workrate and went about finding better avenues to goal. “You get a lot of coaches who say it’s harder to play against 10 men sometimes,” Barbara said. “All of a sudden, guys are mentally aware that they’ve got to work harder, they’ve got to be organised better and the margin of error is quite small. “We also became a little bit direct in the first half, which became a little bit predictable for them to defend.” Hoppers Crossing’s comeback win was completed when Matsumoto provided an insurance goal in the dying stages. The result keeps the Reds on top of the ladder heading into the Easter break, but shows the rest of the competition they are not unbeatable. “For all their hard work, to go into the Easter break the way they have is fantastic,” Barbara
IN THE DOGHOUSE thought I had seen everything in local sport – especially footy – until what happened last Saturday. Four of the nine WRFL senior games were abandoned due to lightning. The one we broadcast for WYN FM was completed after a 20 minute stoppage to see if the lightning subsided. These days we all understand occupational health and safety issues and the umpires were right to suspend play and put safety first. We have become accustomed to this in sports like golf and horse racing but you don’t see much of it in football. I am sure the result of a couple of these games will be hotly discussed with the rule stating that once you get to half-time it is deemed to be a game. In the swings and roundabouts of sport, I hope teams that lost out this time cop it sweet. You can bet it will happen again.

Mitchell name is revered at Hogans Road with generations representing Hoppers Crossing in cricket and searing their names into the club record books both on and off the field. Max made his mark as a foundation player at the club and was instrumental as a committee man in steering the club to its position of power in cricket today. Max turned 70 recently and is celebrating in style with the clan. Another of the former Hoppers hierarchy – Les Dickson – is enjoying retirement from the police force with his wife Ros, a tireless worker for both the cricket and football clubs. Both are rabid Bulldogs supporters and when I bumped into them last week in the supermarket, they proudly showed me their premiership tatts. From what I have seen, the Bulldogs premiership victory must have taken many tattoo parlours in Victoria back into the black ink because everyone seems to have the red, white and blue as a permanent celebration.

Beveridge showed his class after the Bulldogs’ loss in Perth to the Dockers. In the post match press conference a journalist asked if he would consider bringing Will Minson into the team. Beveridge, with a grin, reminded the journalist that Minson had retired at the end of last season. Many other coaches – especially those a bit grumpy after a loss – would have hooked into the journo at 100 miles an hour. Beveridge did not. Suns rise struck by lightning decision Michael Boothey never imagined his first game as coach of the Wyndham Suns would last just two quarters. Boothey could not believe it when a freak storm hit Goddard Street Reserve on Saturday, forcing umpires to call a halt to the game against Braybrook. The officials had 30 minutes to decide if play could go on, but with lightning still striking the Tarneit area, it was decided to call it off in the interests of player and umpire safety. “It’s not the greatest way to start the season, especially as a first-year coach,” Boothey said. “You have a bit of an empty feeling to be honest.” It was an enthralling contest before the lightning struck. Braybrook had the stronger advantage with the breeze, taking a 21-point lead into quarter-time. But Wyndham made up ground in the second quarter, making full use of the wind blowing their way to pile on six goals to one. When play was stopped, the Suns were in the
lead by 15 points, which should be enough to secure them four premiership points, barring an intervention from WRFL headquarters this week. “The momentum of the game was going our way,” Boothey said. “Our second quarter was fantastic, we started playing the footy that we’ve been training to play. It’s out of our hands now. “We can only go on what the league decides with the points.” Despite the short stint on field, Aaron Borg began the season strongly for Wyndham. “Borgy led as a captain does,” Boothey said. “He did all the hard stuff that was needed, and straightened us up when we needed straightening up. “Daniel Hovey was superb aerially across half-forward, while Adam Scarpino was solid down back.” Steven Neralic was the Suns’ only multiple goalkicker, with two. “Round one, I reckon it’s the hardest game of
football outside of finals because everyone is up and about, and wants to impress and play good footy,” Boothey said. “I was happy with our boys, and we’ll take a lot of positives out of it, but I said to them after the game that there’s a lot of areas we’ll still need to work on. “So, we’re still a long way off where we want to be playing our footy,” he said. “It’s a start and it’s what we needed.” Meanwhile, Tarneit’s clash with Sunshine Heights also came to a premature end with umpires deeming Wootten Road Reserve unsafe due to the lightning. The Titans were leading by nine points, and will receive the four points, unless the WRFL intervenes. Warriors claim stormy win By Lance Jenkinson It was supposed to be the first real hit-out of the season for Hoppers Crossing in the Western Region Football League division 1, but freak weather put an abrupt end to such plans. The Warriors had a delayed start to the campaign after their round one fixture against St Albans was rescheduled for Good Friday, so four tough quarters against finals contender Altona would have been the perfect kick-start to the season. But the clash with Altona was abandoned minutes after the sides had returned from the half-time break. Warriors coach Steven Kretiuk said he didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “I’ve never felt like this before, walking away from a game,” he said. After most of the first half in which players and fans bathed in sunshine, a storm rolled in and the umpires stopped the game because of lightning. “It was blowing a gale down one end and 27 degrees and then within a minute it was World War III with the weather,” Kretiuk said. “I’ve 62 WYNDHAM STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 12, 2017
never experienced anything like that coming off the ground.” The good news for Hoppers Crossing is that it led by seven points when the game was stopped. That means the Warriors will receive four premiership points, barring any intervention from WRFL headquarters. That’s not the way Kretiuk wanted to get the Warriors’ first win of the season, nor is it ideal for his side in a match practice sense. “The way the game was going, no side probably deserved to win,” Kretiuk said. “We started off really slow and, to Altona’s credit, they were beating us in all facets of the game. I thought we slowly worked ourselves back into it and started to gain some momentum.” Two late second-quarter goals – a magnificent long-range goal from Ashlin Brown as he was hemmed up on the boundary and a set shot goal from Wayde Skipper – meant the Warriors were on level pegging at the main break. Only five minutes were played in the third quarter before the umpires stopped play, but that was enough for the Warriors to get their noses in front and secure the four points. A
decision had to be made within 30 minutes to continue with the game or abandon it. With the lightning still around, the players eventually shook hands and called it a day, which Kretiuk says was the right decision for health and safety of the players and officials. “It was a difficult situation to be in, but it would’ve been unhealthy for the guys to head out there again,” he said. “Sitting around for 40 minutes, it’s a recipe for disaster with the soft-tissue injuries, so common sense came through. “It’s a duty of care and whatever happened with the points from there is out of our control.” Despite the shortened game, Kretiuk has plenty of ammunition to throw the way of his players after a performance that left a lot to be desired with only a six-day turnaround until the Good Friday battle with St Albans at Hogans Road Reserve. “It’s important we deal with what we did in the first half and look at that during the week on the video,” he said. “We’ll highlight some areas that we were poor at.”
Werribee Districts were given a late scare by St Albans before holding on for a four-point win in the Western Region Football League division 1 at Soldiers Reserve on Saturday. It was almost of case of how much the Tigers would win by when they went to the quarter-time huddle, 41 points to the good, after an eight-goal-two opening term. But a never-say-die St Albans certainly made a game of it, holding the Tigers to just two goals for the remaining three quarters, and keeping goal umpires on their toes themselves, to nearly snatch an improbable comeback. Much to the relief of first year Werribee Districts’ coach Chris Gilham, the Tigers held on for an uncomfortable win, 10.13 (73) - 9.15 (69). Nathan Black, Trent Lee, Mark Pozzuto and Matt Dean were standouts for the Tigers. Small forward Andrew Panayi booted three goals to lead the WRFL goalkicking, with eight in two games. Two wins from two starts is the perfect record for Werribee Districts heading into Easter. But the manner of their most recent victory shows there’s plenty of work ahead of their Wyndham derby with Hoppers Crossing at Soldiers Reserve on April 22. Meanwhile, Wyndhamvale has saluted its first win of the season, beating newly promoted Caroline Springs by 20 points under lights at Wyndham Vale Reserve. The Falcons, led by Tyler Tessari, Devan Ellis and Daniel Cross, made a hot start, and went on with it. Pictures surfaced on social media on Monday showing Wyndham Vale Reserve completely under water after Sunday night’s rain. Had the downfall been a day earlier, it’s safe to say the game would not have gone ahead. But it did, and Falcons’ player-coach Daniel Bunworth got to celebrate his first win in charge. Jets crash on the eastern front By Lance Jenkinson The Western Jets have crashed back to earth in the TAC Cup. A week after a stirring win over rivals Calder Cannons, the Jets got a harsh reality check from reigning premiers Sandringham Dragons, the yardstick of the competition. The Dragons were in total command after quarter-time, running out 64-point winners at Burbank Oval on Saturday. “We just got beaten by a really good outfit,” Jets coach Torin Baker said. “We were out-classed … Sandy has been one of the best performed – obviously last year’s premiers. “I think they’ll be right up there again this year. They’ve had three good wins to date, so their form stands up.” Western Jets, missing three of their AIS-AFL Academy players, started the match well, still in the hunt despite trailing by nine points at quarter-time. From that point on though, it was all
Sandringham, kicking four goals to nil in the second quarter to break the game open. “We were really happy with our first quarter,” Baker said. “We controlled the footy inside our forward half, but they went coast-to-coast a couple of times and slotted a couple from really difficult positions. “Then our players just dropped off a little bit … and that allowed their ball movement and class to shine through. “We needed to maintain the rage we had in the first quarter and persist with that, and we weren’t able to do it, which is disappointing.” Sandringham cruised to a percentage boosting win. The Dragons kicked seven goals to two in the second half to blow the Jets away. Out of the wreckage, Nick Stuhldreier’s second half was a positive, with the co-captain responding to Baker’s call at half-time for a lift. “We were pretty confrontational with the boys at half-time, and he was one who really cracked in during the third quarter and tried to do everything possible to help stem the tide,”
Baker said. “Overall, his output was very good … we had him down for about 24 disposals.” First-year player Hamish Murphy has taken to the TAC Cup like a duck to water. Murphy, who played forward most of his junior career, is thriving in a defensive role with the Jets. “We’ve sort of converted him from a forward in the under-16s at the Jets and Vic Metro, and we’ve put him down back, and he really looks at home,” Baker said. Jack Noonan was the Jets’ only multiple goalkicker, with two, showing coaches he is on the hunt for more game time. “Jack came in for his first game of the year and he had a real red-hot go at it, and showed he values his position within the team,” Baker said. “He’s been keen to break into the group and he displayed that with the way he cracked in at the contest.” Western Jets, sitting ninth with one win from three games, will have a break over the Easter weekend before their next game against Gippsland Power at Burbank Oval on April 22.
Young gun impresses at the MCG Western Jets young gun Cameron Rayner might have forced some alterations to long range AFL mock draft boards at the weekend. After his two dynamic performances for the Jets to open the TAC Cup season, Rayner took his game up another level and excelled in the AFL Academy’s 20th anniversary game at the MCG on Sunday. Playing for the Team Daniher side, which beat Team Weitering by 46 points in a one-sided contest, Rayner was awarded the medal for best-on-ground. Rayner kicked three goals and had 23 disposals in a brilliant display. Making the performance all the more impressive, the 18-year-old went into the match under an injury cloud. Jets coach and AFL Academy assistant Torin Baker said Rayner went into the game after splitting open a toe, so probably wasn’t at 100 per cent. “To produce that sort of performance was excellent,” Baker said. “He went forward and converted really well and was also a good clearance player.” Rayner was one of three Western Jets players involved in the game, with highly-rated Lachlan Fogarty and developing player Buku Khamis also featuring. Khamis, one of 15 bottom-age players invited to play in the game, took one of the most unique pathways to get there. A refugee from South Sudan, Khamis moved to Australia with his mum and brothers aged six and was a latecomer to the sport. Each time Khamis sets foot on a football field for the Jets, he does something special. “Every game, he just keeps showing what he can do for a couple of moments,” Baker said. “He’s not having a huge output in the whole of games yet, but he continues to learn new tricks as a high forward.” Khamis kicked a goal for Team Weitering. Baker reckons exposure to elite players in the AFL Academy and listening to and learning from top coaches at the academy and Maribyrnong Sports Academy will stand him in good stead. “To play against good players and even do the training, he’ll benefit from it enormously,” Baker said. “He’s become a really professional athlete with the way he goes about things. “He’s in the sports academy at Maribyrnong and he’s also in the AFL Academy, so he’s getting really good exposure to good habits.” Lance Jenkinson

Devils off to flying start Werribee Devils will head into the Easter break perched on top of the Big V basketball women’s division 1 ladder. The Devils improved to an impeccable 5-0 record after a commanding 79-58 win over Hawthorn Magic at the Boroondara Sports Complex on Saturday night. A fast start saw the Devils lead by 10 points at the first break and they never relinquished their advantage on the scoreboard en route to a comfortable win. Rohanee Cox was the leading scorer for Werribee with 22 points, including four three-pointers. Another Devils player to show her long range shooting ability was Jessy Price with 17 points.
