Detention centre debacle By Charlene Macaulay There’s been an outpouring of community anger over plans for a new $288 million high security youth detention centre at Werribee South. After nearly a week of speculation, the state government confirmed on Monday that it will start construction of a 224-bed youth detention centre along Hoppers Lane early next year – despite no consultation with either Wyndham council or locals. The prison, which is slated for completion by the end of 2020, will hold both remanded and sentenced offenders, and include a 12-bed mental health unit and an “intensive supervision unit” with at least eight beds. The detention centre will be located in an area earmarked for part of the East Werribee employment precinct, and will be about two kilometres down the road from select-entry high school Suzanne Cory, Victoria University, Werribee Mercy Hospital, Wyndham Private Medical Centre, St Vincent’s Private Werribee Hospital and Werribee Open Range Zoo. It is also within five kilometres of Wyndham Harbour. A statement from the state government also cited “scope for future expansion” at the 31-hectare government-owned site. Premier Daniel Andrews said Werribee South had been chosen for its proximity to health and education services, and the “significant buffer” between the detention centre and residential areas. More than 6500 people have already signed a petition opposing the location of the centre, while almost 2000 people are following the newly-formed Speak Out – Wyndham’s Voice Facebook page. The group will be holding a public meeting on Monday, February 13, 7.30pm, at Encore Stadium to voice their concerns about the centre’s location, and it has invited state and federal MPs. Group co-founder Lisa Heinrichs said at least 20 Werribee South farmers will ride their tractors past the Hoppers Lane location, along Sneydes Road and up Derrimut Road, to the public meeting, bearing signs that will read: “Not in Werribee South”. “We’re not taking it lying down,” she said. “I can’t think of a worse location – you’ve got hospitals, a medical centre, a school, Victoria University – it’s a stone’s throw away from upper Point Cook and close to our tourist precinct.”

Meanwhile, residents have flooded the Wyndham Star Weekly Facebook page, with more than 600 comments venting frustration with the plan, and many raising concerns about the lack of consultation and the youth jail’s proximity to Wyndham Harbour, the Werribee South tourism precinct, hospitals, schools and homes. A state government media release said construction would follow “close consultation with the local community”, but Ratepayers of Werribee South president Joe Garra said talk of consulting with people, after an announcement
had already been made, was insulting. “There’s no consultation if we’re not allowed to voice our opinions,” Mr Garra said. Wyndham mayor Henry Barlow concurred, adding: “What are we going to consult about? The colour scheme? “We’ve had no consultation – we haven’t had any meeting with ministers or the government itself as to possible locations out here – this is just being sprung on us and, let me tell you, we’re not happy about it.” ■ Continued

Werribee MP Tim Pallas has come under fire from his constituents for not representing community views about the Werribee South youth detention centre furore. Former Wyndham councillor and five-time mayor Shane Bourke was among many to express disappointment in Mr Pallas via social media. “Tim Pallas had the nerve to say ‘my community’ in a newspaper article this morning. No Tim, it is not your community. Never has been and never will be,” Mr Bourke wrote on the Wyndham Star Weekly Facebook page. Other comments on the Facebook page include this from Glen: “It is obvious Tim Pallas doesn’t care about his electorate. He should be listening to what the people are saying.” And from Nicole: “He has clearly chosen his position as treasurer over being a member for Wyndham – shame on you, Tim Pallas, sitting in your ivory tower.” Western metropolitan MP Bernie Finn called on Mr Pallas to resign. “He has sold out the people of Werribee and he is not fit to represent them in parliament,” Mr Finn said. Mr Pallas’ office did not respond to Star Weekly’s questions about the lack of consultation, community opposition and a request for more details, instead opting to release a short statement: “Werribee is a proud and growing community and this facility will not only complement the government’s plans for a justice precinct in Werribee – but ensure that there are a range of blue and white collar jobs for the growing area,” it read. “We will continue to work closely with Wyndham city council and the local community to ensure the facility incorporates community feedback, as well as exploring opportunities for new transport and community infrastructure.” Charlene Macaulay

Toyota finale signals jobs gloom By Goya Dmytryshchak More companies will start cutting jobs after Toyota last week announced it would shut its Altona plant on October 3. Toyota said about 2600 workers would lose their jobs, with the workforce to be cut from about 3900 to 1300. The company, which started making cars in Australia in 1963, first announced in 2014 that it would stop manufacturing at Altona this year, but an exact closure date was not set. The company plans to make 61,000 cars before closing, including 34,400 for export.
The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union estimates that 40,000 workers are employed by the wider manufacturing sector, including supply-chain companies. Toyota Tsusho, which has plants in Altona and Laverton North, including a subsidiary at Laverton North, told Star Weekly there will be “considerable” job losses. “That means we will be reducing the size of our business and the size of our workforce, because we are a key supplier to Toyota,” spokeswoman Ruth Anderson said. “Basically, if we cannot continue that business any more, we obviously need to downsize.
“We have multiple sites and each will be downsizing in a different degree … I couldn’t tell you individually what the number of each employees are at each site and what the effect is on that.” Toyota’s head office will be based at Port Melbourne, while its Altona site will become a training centre. Toyota Australia president Dave Buttner said the priority in coming months is to support employees in the transition period. Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan said the state government’s support package included $46.5 million to help

Avalon shuttle takes off in Wyndham Wyndham jetsetters flying in and out of Avalon airport can now catch the bus to and from the tarmac … well, close enough. An express Melbourne-to-Avalon shuttle service that will stop seven times a day in Werribee has been operating for a week. Avalon airport chief executive Justin Giddings said the airport had struck a 10-year deal with SkyBus, which last week started meeting all Jetstar flights arriving and departing at Avalon. The Avalon-Melbourne buses stop at the Werribee RSL in Synnot Street, Werribee. Wyndham travellers can expect to pay $19 for a one-way ticket. SkyBus director Michael Sewards said the new offerings would provide travellers with a regular and reliable service for each and every flight to and from Avalon. “Connecting Victoria’s second airport with Melbourne will make domestic travel a lot easier for many Melburnians,” Mr Sewards said. The new service comes almost a year after Cheap Tours Melbourne started offering a shuttle service between Melbourne airport and several Wyndham locations, including the D’Olive in Point Cook, Werribee Mansion, Wyndham Harbour Marina, and Comfort Inn, Best Western and Quest in Werribee and Sanctuary Lakes.
They’re the people you call when you need a hand – now Hoppers Crossing Fire Brigade needs more people to give it a hand. The Country Fire Authority unit is running a recruitment drive with a view to getting its new recruits in training from April. In particular, the brigade is after tradies, self-employed people and those with flexible work schedules. Volunteer firefighter Peter Habersatt, who has been in the CFA for the past 25 years, said the role was more varied than some might realise. “We do everything – community service and activities, structure fires, road accident rescues, hazmat incidents, cats stuck in trees, kids stuck in cots,” Mr Habersatt said. “You’re not just joining as a firefighter, you’re joining as a brigade member … called out to serve the community. “We’re seeking day-time responders,” Mr Habersatt said. “Either tradies or people who work afternoon shift and are available from, say, 8am to midday to respond to callouts.” The brigade has 40 operational volunteers in addition to the career firefighters at present. The Hoppers Crossing branch is the busiest in the north-west metro region, responding to about 1400 callouts each year. Mr Habersatt said recruits will need to undertake a 16-week training course that covers firefighting basics, first-aid and other qualifying skills. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the municipality remained an important industrial and manufacturing hub. “We are working with other regional councils, as part of LeadWest, to maximise economic investment for the region,” she said. LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley joined the state government in calling on the federal government to support car-industry workers and help create jobs in the west.

New top cop on the beat By Charlene Macaulay Wyndham’s new chief of police, Inspector Marty Allison, is on the beat. He joins Wyndham police after the promotion of former Inspector Frank Sells, who moves into the position of superintendent of Victoria Police’s Road Policing Strategy Division within Road Policing Command. Inspector Allison comes with 36 years policing experience under his belt, starting at St Albans and encompassing a range of both uniform and crime investigation roles.

Most recently, he was based at Footscray police station as investigation and response manager of Westgate division, which includes Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong. He headed up all 10 crime units of the division – including the family violence, armed robbery, sex offence and child investigation teams. “This position was offered to me, and I jumped at the chance to come here,� Inspector Allison said. He believes there’s still a “significant� amount of family violence in Wyndham going unreported, especially among new and emerging communities, and he plans to focus on this during his tenure. He also cited youth crime as a key focus for local police. “Dealing with young people is enormously rewarding,� he said. “There’s some challenges there for us to try and engage with our youth,

and work with agencies, such as the council, to come up with meaningful and sustainable programs to keep our youth out of strife and out of police attention.� However, Inspector Allison notes that overall crime in Wyndham is currently on a downward trend.
“I’ve been told that in recent times, we’ve arrested and remanded a lot of recidivist, volume crime offenders, and that may have contributed to this,� he said. “Anecdotally, we’re receiving information that there’s a shortage of ice at the moment, and that may be contributing to it.�

Cr Barlow said no other corrections centre in Victoria is located on such a high-profile site. “They are usually put in areas that are out of the way,â€? he said. A Wyndham Harbour spokeswoman also voiced opposition to the plan. “Having this facility in Werribee South is inconsistent with the state government’s objectives in the area – an emerging tourism hub with a proposed multi-billion dollar employment and education precinct, and a region that boasts one of the fastest growing communities in the country,â€? she said. Youth Affairs Minister Jenny Mikakos told 3AW while Werribee South was the government’s preferred site, it is in talks with Wyndham council about the best place to build the new centre. “If the council was to say there is other land within the municipality that meets all the criteria ‌ then obviously we would consider that,â€? she said. A spokesman for state Planning Minister Richard Wynne said the government’s vision for the East Werribee employment precinct was intact. “It’s all about driving jobs and boosting the local economy, and a new youth justice facility will do just that,â€? he said. “It’s not just going to be a major driver of direct employment, it will give nearby businesses and traders renewed opportunities for lucrative contracts and other works.â€?

Dog attacks and plastic surgery By Charlene Macaulay Two dog attack victims were hospitalised and had to undergo plastic surgery for injuries to their arms and legs when two staffies were let loose in Hoppers Crossing last year. They were among six people, including a police officer, attacked when the dogs escaped their Hoppers Crossing property. The dogs were put down and their owner ordered to pay $4200 in fines and other costs.
The case is one of 32 successful prosecutions Wyndham council has made against neglectful pet owners in the past six months. Other successful prosecutions included: • The owner of a husky had to pay $7500 and had a range of restrictions imposed on the dog after it attacked a man in a Point Cook park. The victim, who was protecting his three-year-old daughter from the dog, required plastic surgery. • A staffy was euthanised and its owner required
to pay more than $3500 after the dog attacked an elderly person who was jogging past. • A Little River woman was fined $2400 and agreed to move nearly 60 sheep and goats from her property after they escaped a number of times and ran on to a 80km/h road. • A Williams Landing man was fined $31,000 and banned from breeding domestic animals for 10 years after council rangers found 72 Bengal cats in his house, 30 of which were in such poor health they needed to be put down.
The council also prosecuted 19 people after their dogs repeatedly escaped from their properties. Wyndham council environment and sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said pet owners had to ensure their pets did not pose a danger to the wider community. “In most of these cases, the dogs had not been properly contained to their properties, which shows a lack of responsibility on the part of the owners,” Cr Marcus said.
Riders return to frontline Victoria Police. He said many frontline emergency personnel are too scared to say they’re struggling for fear of being sidelined. Fellow rider and former security guard Dean Marks added: “The thing is, your grounding mechanism is taken away – the minute they’re no longer helping, it’s like their identity has been stolen, and all the struggles and the fights you’re having internally become compounded. “I’ve had my own struggles … those memories replace part of you. Every now and then, those things come to visit you – there are various triggers.” Mr Marks said in the past 15 years, Australia has lost more military personnel to suicide than in active combat. Kevin Hillier fumes about a juvenile justice centre ‘popping up’
W
e’re living in pop-up days. Almost every time you walk through a shopping area, you’ll stumble upon a new pop-up. Great idea and one that will no doubt continue to blossom until the next fad comes along. I have nothing against pop-ups as such, until they take the form of a juvenile justice centre. Just last week one popped up and was confirmed this week as destined to become a permanent part of the landscape in Werribee South. So where did it pop up from? The council doesn’t know. Our state and federal representatives knew nothing about, or so they said. But this idea did not just pop up overnight like a bad toadstool. The press release from the Andrews government claimed “close consultation with the local community”. Poppycock. Tim Pallas has not covered himself in glory, either, by saying: “I will be working closely with the local community to ensure they are kept informed about the new youth justice facility
and our consideration of a more extensive justice precinct in the Werribee area.” Justice precinct? When did that get put on any agenda? What else are we not being told? According to the media release, the site was chosen because it is land owned by the government, it’s close to health and education services and there is a significant buffer between the site and residential areas. They forgot to mention it is in a safe Labor zone, will have no far-reaching (eastern suburbs) socio-economic ramifications and it is only the western suburbs that are affected. I feel sorry for the Wyndham council in this situation. While it has been quick to condemn the announcement, it has been shown up as a toothless body. While they may be fighting a losing battle, our community leaders must step up and provide a voice for the people. Party politics and agendas must be shelved for the good of the people of Wyndham. We are not a dumping ground for projects such as this – and the sooner we let those in power know, the better. ■

Police are investigating after a woman was struck by a car that failed to stop at Truganina on Monday morning. The incident came about after a taxi being driven along Leakes Road struck a bollard at roadworks near Mainview Boulevard the previous night. This crash caused the vehicle to get stuck on the side of the road. A tow truck driver, along with the female owner of the vehicle, attended about 2.30am on the Monday to collect the taxi. The 56-year-old Burnside woman was standing beside the tow truck when a vehicle travelling along Leakes Road struck her, pinning her under a safety barrier. The driver of the car left the scene. The tow truck driver called triple zero and the woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Wyndham’s kids-in-cars problem By Charlene Macaulay More paramedics are being called out to rescue kids from cars parked in Wyndham than in any other Melbourne region, new Ambulance Victoria data reveals. The figures show that 86 calls were made to triple-zero to rescue kids locked in parked cars across Wyndham in 2016, with most calls coming from Hoppers Crossing (24), Werribee (23) and Point Cook (19). State-wide, paramedics were called to 1562 cases of kids left in cars last year, with close to
80 per cent of cases involving toddlers. Of those cases, 15 kids were treated and transported to hospital. State health commander Paul Holman said people still didn’t seem to understand the deadly risks involved in leaving a child in a hot car. “It is never OK to leave a child in a car,” he said. “Even if you’re just ducking into the shops – you might get distracted or bump into someone you know and time can tick away much quicker than you realise.

“Given how much education there is about the dangers of leaving children in cars, it is disappointing that some people still decide to take that risk.” The figures come nearly two months after Wyndham council joined Kidsafe Victoria to raise awareness of the dangers of leaving
children unattended in cars. The council has added Kidsafe “Do Not Leave Children in Cars” signage at all 24 kindergartens in the city, ensuring parents and carers doing pick-ups and drop-offs see the message at least twice a day. It will also plug the safety message through social media. Geelong, Moonee Valley and Casey councils run similar campaigns. Kidsafe Victoria general manager Jason Chambers said temperatures inside parked cars could be up to 30C hotter than outside temperatures and capable of exceeding 50C in a matter of minutes on a typical summer day.
Locals seal the deal It’s not every day a local business gets to help improve local roads. Laverton North’s Alex Fraser Group got to do just that recently when the company was contracted to supply 60,000 tonnes of crushed product for the $6.7 million duplication of Dohertys Road between Foundation and Fitzgerald roads. Alex Fraser managing director Peter Murphy said the company’s Laverton North asphalt plant and recycling plants had used nightshifts for the work to reduce the impact on local traffic. “This has been a demanding job on a busy road,” he said. “At the end of the project, we have provided 14,000 tonnes of asphalt to pave 31,000 square metres of road and supplied 60,000 tonnes of crushed product.” Wyndham council’s most recent traffic volume report shows that nearly 17,000 cars use Dohertys Road every day.
Wyndham mayor Henry Barlow said the duplication works were completed a month ahead of schedule. “The finished product will significantly improve safety and reduce congestion and travel times,” Cr Barlow said. “The duplication of Dohertys Road is a win-win situation.” Dohertys Road will undergo further duplication and widening works in two sections – between Fitzgerald Road to Grieve Parade, and between Foundation and Palmers roads – as part of the state government’s planned $1.8 billion upgrade of Wyndham roads. A Werribee vet nurse is hoping to show the world how the plight of wildlife being used as tourist attractions can be transformed. Philippa Wilkinson has spent the past three years working on The Elephant in the Room, a 20-minute documentary that focuses on responsible wildlife tourism. It’s a cause that became close to her heart after she spent six months travelling through south-east Asia in 2012 and saw just how popular close-up wildlife experiences – including elephant trekking and lion and primate encounters – were with tourists. While Ms Wilkinson understands how important these experiences can be for local tourism economies, she said some of the tactics being used to control wildlife were of concern.
“They belong in the wild … [but] there’s this element of control that’s involved so that you can get up close to them,” she said. “It’s not the most pleasant life for them.” While on her travels, she documented some of her thoughts and ideas for affecting change. Once back home, she assembled a team – including a presenter and editor – and with crowdfunding raised enough money for the group to go back overseas and get more footage. She now hopes to enter her documentary in film festivals to help spread her message. Over the last week or so Wyndham has been the topic of much discussion as the result of State Government plans to build a youth detention centre in Werribee South. I have no doubt that most residents will be following this issue closely and I want to assure you that your Council is working hard to advocate for the project not to go ahead at the Hoppers Lane site. We feel strongly that the construction of a correctional facility in what should’ve been a major employment precinct is the wrong decision as it could affect the highly desirable Werribee East employment precinct which was meant to generate thousands of jobs in innovation and research. The proximity to the sensitive green wedge zone, market gardens and the Werribee tourism precinct is of real concern and it is on these grounds that Council is seeking meetings with all relevant State Government representatives to ensure the views of our residents are heard. A helping hand has done wonders for one very special little girl and her family. Wyndham Vale’s Jana Hammoudeh, three, has Leigh’s disease, a rare genetic disorder that means she’s unable to walk or talk, and can only eat through a feeding tube. There is no treatment or cure for the hereditary condition, and sufferers usually only live for a few years. Sadly, Jana’s family lost their first-born son, Saif, to the same disease when he was two years and seven months old. Mum Yasmin Akel said she was shocked when Jana was also diagnosed at 10 months old. “There’s no future. They said that she’ll die at a young age, and they said that she might not make it to kinder. “It’s like a nightmare.” Ms Akel said the help and support she receives through Very Special Kids, a charity that helps families of children with life-threatening illnesses, was her saving grace. Volunteer Emily Webster has been paired with the family for a year and helps Ms Akel with the practicalities of having a sick child. “If there was no Very Special Kids, I don’t think I would be able to do what I have done,” Ms Akel said. “The support that we have from Emily, she helps us with everything.” There are 21 families in Wyndham and the north-west who need a volunteer like Ms Webster. Very Special Kids is hosting a volunteer information session from 6.30pm on February 13 at the Wyndham Park Community Centre for those interested in becoming a volunteer. Where the wild things get well … Ever wondered what happens when a boa needs to visit the doctor? Star Weekly’s Charlene Macaulay went behind the scenes at Werribee Open Range Zoo’s vet hospital to find out … It’s the kind of vet hospital that caters for everything from tiny birds and marsupials to a two-tonne rhinoceros, gorillas and herds of zebra. Werribee Open Range Zoo’s vet hospital has three vets and three vet nurses, who work out of purpose-built rooms that include a large procedure room, its own pathology lab, and three wards for animals to convalesce after a procedure. There’s even a food preparation area with flavour kits, which are used to make medicines more palatable … did you know bread and jam is a popular flavour combination for monkeys? Gorillas, cheetahs and even camels have had health and dental checks and surgeries at the vet hospital, while some of the more sizable and hard to move animals – such as lions – are treated out in the field. On the day Star Weekly visits, a nine-year-old Madagascan boa constrictor called Westy is in for a routine check. Westy is one of six boas to reside at the zoo, and all have to undergo a vet check every three to four years. Vet Paul Eden said boas like Westy shed the
outer layer of their skin in one piece, including the special scales over their eyes – dubbed “spectacles” – so check-ups are timed after this has occurred to ensure each snake’s skin comes off properly. “Particularly because these snakes are used regularly for handling, we want to make sure
that they’re in good health, and we’re not causing them any undue harm,” he said. Dr Eden first tries to knock Westy out with an injectable anaesthetic, but it doesn’t take … so Westy instead has a tube inserted into his airway to let the anaesthetic work its magic. Once he’s under, Dr Eden performs a series of
X-rays on Westy, takes a blood sample, checks his teeth and eyes, monitors his heartbeat and feels for any unusual lumps or bumps. This is tougher than you might imagine. “Because they don’t have any limbs, they don’t have any external signs to indicate where the organs are,” Dr Eden said.

Drive brings peace of mind A Wyndham four-wheel drive group will put the pedal to the metal this weekend to get behind brain cancer sufferers and their families. The Werribee District 4WD Club has teamed with brain cancer support group Peace of Mind Foundation to host a weekend retreat at Anglesea, starting Friday. Bec Picone and brother Clinton launched the Wyndham foundation two years ago after Clinton lost his wife, Caroline, to brain cancer in 2011. It’s now Australia’s largest brain cancer support organisation, offering grants, in-home support services and a support group. Leigh Taylor from Werribee District 4WD Club first got involved with Peace of Mind Foundation last year when he saw that a
planned Harley outing for brain cancer patients had fallen through. “I got in contact with Bec through Facebook and said, we don’t have Harleys, but we have four-wheel drives – would you like us to take over that day? “She said yes … there was 26 of us four-wheel drivers from the Werribee District club and we took them on a day trip. “That enticed us to take it to phase two, which was to provide a weekend retreat.” The weekend will include four-wheel driving, rides in muscle cars, hot rods, Harley Davidsons and jet skis, canoeing, visits to a chocolate factory, and a visit from surprise guests. Thunderstorm asthma will go under the microscope in a bid to predict, and prevent, similar events to last November’s storm that claimed nine lives. The state government will pour $1 million into research into the causes and prevention of thunderstorm asthma events after a preliminary report by the inspector-general for emergency management noted that not much was known about it. Ambulance Victoria was flooded with more than 2332 calls in the 12 hours between 6pm, November 21, and 6am, November 22, as a storm swept through Melbourne. Hoppers Crossing law student Hope Carnevali was one of thousands to be struck down with thunderstorm asthma, triggered by the sudden, thundery cool change. The 20-year-old died on her front lawn as family members desperately waited for an ambulance. Hope was one of nine who died, while about 4000 others presented to hospitals across Melbourne with respiratory problems. State Health and Ambulance Services Minister Jill Hennessy said the government was pledging $700,000 to support research into the underlying causes of thunderstorm asthma and ways to forecast future events and $300,000 to expand the state’s pollen monitoring network. MY WYNDHAM Trevor Murphy is not a man who likes sitting still. The 64-year-old Point Cook resident is semi-retired from the air force and umpires with the Werribee Softball Association. The Lalor Hero fit in a quick chat with Charlene Macaulay. How did you come to live in Point Cook? I was born in Belfast, in Northern Ireland, and was raised in Adelaide – immigrated with my family in 1956. Went to school in Adelaide and joined the air force in 1969, and then moved around with the military. I had postings to Laverton and Point Cook, Tottenham … I married a girl out of America who preferred to live in this area, and this is where we’ve settled. I was with the air force for 34 years and now I’m with the army reserves part time and I train the air force cadets. What was it about this area that attracted you both? I think it was the climate and the similarities from where she came from in Oregon. We’ve been married 35 years. I joined the military in ’69 and got out in ’78 and travelled around Europe and America for two-and-a-half years and met her while I was travelling. We’ve got two boys, both grown men, still living at home.
As an adolescent, I played baseball. Through my military career, I had a requirement to take on a secondary appointment, which got me involved in softball. As I got older and less competitive in the baseball arena, I moved over to softball and continued to play softball right up until my late 50s. I still play masters. As a club member, everybody is expected to help out with umpiring at some point for a season. Through that, I got involved in umpiring and I

You’re an umpire with the Werribee Softball Association. How did you get into the sport?
guess I was reasonably good at it and someone suggested I should become a full-time umpire. I’ve gone through the ranks. I’m now an international umpire. I’m off to New Zealand next week to umpire the Challenge Cup. I first got involved with the association here in 1993.
Do you have any other hobbies? When I get the opportunity, I like to travel, and I don’t mind gardening. I’ve been working on a project to possibly take about 10 people on the Kokoda Track in the next 18 months.
You were named a Lalor Hero in 2016. Was that because of your work with the Werribee Softball Association? Yes, it was. Someone through the association nominated me. I was surprised and pleased.

A bare-headed motorbike rider was very seriously injured and two onlookers badly hurt last Wednesday night when Glen King, of Werribee, was thrown from his motorcycle. Glen King’s brother, Dale, who saw the accident but escaped injury, dropped in at The Banner the other day in the hope that a report on Glen’s accident might shake other riders out of their complacency, and possibly prevent further occurrences of this type of accident.
Werribee will officially become a ‘city’ on 19 March. The announcement was made by the acting Minister for Local Government Mr Peter Spyker last week. However it is unlikely that local residents will notice much change in the country suburb when they awake the following morning.

Werribee police warned last week that they would get tough on street drinkers who blatantly ignored alcohol bans. Police statistics reveal that twice as many people were fined last month for drinking alcohol in public places than in all of 1996.
More than 60 Wyndham families are in crisis because a key financial support agency is unable to help them with back-to-school costs. UnitingCare Werribee Support and Housing has over the past fortnight knocked back 67 requests for financial vouchers as parents struggle to keep up with the cost of school fees, books and stationery.

Heart disease is a very common medical problem in dogs and is occasionally seen in cats. While pets don’t suffer from heart attacks like humans, they are prone to both congenital heart defects and to serious diseases affecting the heart muscle and valves. Certain breeds of dog, like my own Cavalier King Charles spaniels Lola and Charlie, are predisposed to heart disease.

It is vital that all pets have regular veterinary check-ups to monitor for heart disease as external signs don’t develop until late in the disease. The earliest indication of a problem is typically a heart murmur (an abnormal “whooshy” sound) when the vet listens with a stethoscope. If heart disease progresses to congestive heart failure, the heart becomes enlarged and fluid accumulates on the lungs. Clinical signs that owners may notice at home include coughing, reduced ability to exercise, laboured breathing and occasionally fainting. If a heart problem is suspected, your vet will perform X-rays of the heart and lungs or recommend that an ultrasound of the heart be performed.

Grass grief stings bees By Lance Jenkinson Werribee City could only replicate its promising pre-season form in bite-sized chunks during Saturday’s uninspiring 1-1 draw with Moreland City. Bees coach Sergio Sabbadini returned home irritated by the “sub-standard” playing surface at Campbell Reseve for the National Premier league 2 west season opener in Coburg. He was upset, too, by his team’s inability to adapt to the conditions before it was too late to secure all three points. “It was terrible,” said Sabbadini of the pitch. “The grass was long, it was bumpy, it was loose in parts because they’ve just laid a new surface. “It wasn’t fit to play a game of football on and we didn’t adapt. “It became a game of kick ball … the ball was probably out of play more than it was in play. “We knew it was going to be like that and prepared accordingly, but it took us until the 60th minute to realise what had to happen.” By that stage, Moreland City had a one-goal advantage. While Sabbadini was getting more and more frustrated, he had seen enough in the lead-up friendly matches to know it was not in his side’s nature to just roll over and accept defeat. The Bees came home strongly and could have pinched all three points on another day. “We showed a bit of character in the last half an hour to muscle out at least a draw,” Sabbadini said. “I know the players were disappointed because I could see it in their faces after the game. They really wanted to win and get the season off to a good start. “They set pretty high standards. They wanted to win, but it was a draw. We’ll take it and move on – that’s all you can do.” Jonathan Voulgaris scored the equalising goal for Werribee City. IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The Bourke Street tragedy rocked everyone in Melbourne, and it hit close to home. Former Werribee Tigers’ captain and 100-game player Trent Churchill was one of those injured. Trent was struck on his left side and hospitalised with serious leg injuries. He is on the mend and, by the time you read this, should be out of hospital, recovering at home. While he admits there are many worse off than him, the trauma of the day will linger long after his injuries heal. The support and wishes he has received from former teammates and Tigers’ supporters have helped him enormously. Anyone who knows Trent knows what a ripper bloke he is, and that he will give 110 per cent to his recovery. ■ Another former Tiger great Daryl Taylor was recently named in the Northern Territory Wanderers’ Team of the Century, a huge honour. Daryl used the VFL off season to head north, kicking bags of goals in the NTFL. Daryl’s pilgrimages to Darwin became Werribee folklore, and his stories got bigger with each year. He played some outstanding football in the tropics, adding premierships, best and fairest and leading goal-kicking awards to his achievements at Chirnside Park, where he played 75 games and kicked 194 goals, topping the seniors goal-kicking on two occasions. A well deserved accolade, Daryl. ■ Williamstown sits pretty comfortably on the top of sub district’s East West 1st X1 ladder at the moment. On Sunday, February 26, at Point Gellibrand, it holds its past players day and a reunion for the 2016-17 premiership team, which boasted some pretty big local cricket names, including coach Stephen Sandri, skipper Craig Sheedy, Daryl Clemson, Cain Speakman, Ben Davis, Paul Knight, Mark Brown, Graham Murdoch, Nick Jensen, Tony Freeman, and Bill Fowler. Rohan Smith – who showed he’s a very handy cricketer – missed the championship final due to football, and Cameron Smith was injured. Cats unfurl a turnaround to recoup pride Hoppers Crossing is not ready to wave the white flag just yet in sub-district cricket. While the Cats are no longer in finals contention, they want to keep their pride intact. And they did just that on Saturday, with a positive showing with the bat on day one against Endeavour Hills, away at Sydney Pargenter Reserve. Hoppers Crossing posted a mammoth 9-291 declared, which easily eclipsed its previous high of the season, when it made 185 against Balwyn in round six. This was a run feast of gargantuan proportions for the Cats, a side that was bowled out for just 19 at their lowest point this summer. It was a genuine team effort, with no single player reaching the half century mark. Three batsmen – Daniel Leahy, Chris Henry and Tom Glover – shared the Cats top score of 45. Not far behind that trio was Sanka Abeyruwan with 43, and there were valuable contributions from wicketkeeper Justin Goegan (33), tailender Hendro Dias (26no) and opener Adrian Myers (23). A truck-load of runs gave Cats’ captain Greg Kennedy a rare chance to dictate play. He gave his bowlers two overs late in the day, but Endeavour Hills made him regret that
decision, taking 19 runs without the loss of a wicket. Still, the early honours went to Hoppers Crossing going into day two as favourites for a turnaround on its season. Jon Deeble is getting the job done at home and abroad. The Sunshine-raised super coach has been working his magic for the Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League, turning them from easybeats to the team to beat in the space of one season. The well-respected 54-year-old has been part of the coaching panels at two MLB clubs in the United States and has four championship rings in that time – three with the Boston Red Sox and one with the Florida Marlins (now Miami Marlins). Deeble is about to embark on a new adventure in the US after signing on as a director with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Deeble is also coach of the Australian national baseball team. “I coach our Australian Olympic team and have been to three Olympics with the team,” Deeble said. “We’ve got the World Baseball Classic coming up in March.” More pressing for Deeble is the ABL championship series. The Aces will host the showpiece event for the first time since the league was reformed in the 2010-11 season. Tigers eye a great eight By Lance Jenkinson Eight is the magic number for Werribee – eight wins, that is. If the Tigers are to get to 8-5 – the record captain Tim O’Brien believes could get his side to the sub-district finals – the Tigers cannot put a foot wrong in the last three matches of the season. An exciting, but tense, second day’s play is in store for the Tigers in their match against Box Hill, which has an identical 5-5 record after 10 rounds. “Box Hill are in the same position as us, so it’s pretty much a mini-final for both teams,” O’Brien said. “If we did drop this one, we’d have to do something extraordinary like win an outright and hope results go our way. “Even if we win the next three, we’re not guaranteed to make it. – all we’ve got to do is try and play good cricket. If we can be 8-5 at the end … most seasons that will get you in.” There will be 22 nervous players at Chirnside Park on Saturday with finals on the line. Box Hill posted 206 in 75 overs on day one, a par score for conditions, so the Tigers will face a challenging but manageable run chase. “If we can get through the new ball, there’s definitely an opportunity to score and have a good crack at chasing down the runs,” O’Brien said. “The way the wicket played, I was pretty happy with what we’re chasing. “If we bat well next week, we’ll give ourselves every opportunity.” It was a “grind” in the heat for Werribee’s fielders on Saturday. For the most part, the Tigers were faultless, but they let their concentration slip briefly in the last session.
“We had them 9-170 odd and they ended up getting 206,” O’Brien said. “After a really good mid-session, we probably let ourselves down after the last drinks break, where they put on 30 for the last wicket.” All things considered, it was a good bowling performance from Werribee, with each of the strike bowlers playing their part. Spinner Michael Kelly churned out 23 overs for 3-65, paceman Jonathan Burton had 3-41 off 14 and Matt Watt did his bit with 1-26 off 13. Part-timer Adam Alifraco took a wicket in his first over to finish with 1-12 off three. The stand-out was speedster James Freeman, who took 2-22 off 13, including the scalp of Box Hill’s top run scorer on the day, Gaurav Parikh, who made 43. “His second spell was really good,” O’Brien said. “He got us back on top.”
Riders returned to Altona’s Drake Boulevard on Sunday for race two of Footscray Cycling Club’s four-race Beach Road Cycles Summer Series. On a wide circuit, Footscray club champion Dominik Dudkiewicz made it 32 consecutive wins after leaving behind a five-man break in the last 10 minutes. Dudkiewicz, Adam Murchie, Travis Small, Miles DaCosta and David Newett worked hard to dump a hard-chasing bunch, until Dudkiewicz seized the chance to go solo. Newett took the bunch sprint from Murchie. In B-Grade, Geelong rider Josh Williams narrowly won over Footscray’s Joe Bury, the pair combining with third-placed Steven Moses for a late break, holding off the bunch until the end. Dan Purcell took his second consecutive win in C-grade from Henry Dietze and Matt Nelson, and in D Grade, Tam Nguyen took the win from Robert Raats and Damian Bevilacqua.
