A cafe to mend your bits and bobs is coming to Sunbury. The Sunbury Neighbourhood House Repair Cafe aims to help reduce waste by fixing household items for free. House manager Hope Jenkins said most items would be accepted at the cafe for a quick fix. “It is about preventing landfill, it is also about sharing skills [and] connecting the community,� she said. “We repair things like a wobbly chair, clothing that might need a hem taken up, stuffed toys. “The idea is that people don’t leave the premises. They stay with the repairer, connect, learn a skill or stick around and have a coffee.� The cafe has nine volunteer repairers but Ms Jenkins said she was on the hunt for more “specific� volunteers. “If there is a person who fixes leather belts or buckles, shoes or jewellery and watches – it can be as general or specific,� she said. The Repair Cafe opens on Saturday, February 29 from 10am-12.30pm at 513 Elizabeth Drive, Sunbury. The cafe will be open on the fourth Saturday of each month. Sunbury aged care blow By Jessica Micallef Nearly 30 elderly residents will have to find a new home and 40 staff will be left without jobs when a Sunbury aged care facility closes its doors. The Sunbury Lions Community Aged Care Facility in Timins Street is expected to close on March 13 after nearly 30 years in operation. Sunbury Community Health, which owns the facility, announced the decision on Thursday. Sunbury Community Health chief executive Phillip Ripper said the site was “no longer suitable� for running an aged care facility. “It’s 30-years-old [and] it was designed as a
hostel,� he said. “It needs to operate to higher levels of care and we believe we can no longer provide a safe and suitable operation. “The scale of the facility is small. There are 33 beds. It is a small facility by industry standards. “Primarily it’s a concern for safety for residents and staff.� Currently there are 29 residents living at the home. Mr Ripper said all costs of relocation would be covered by Sunbury Community Health and resident accommodation bonds and accommodation deposits woould be refunded. “We’ve engaged with a team and they have met with all families, but one or two, about
their needs and preferences and to help manage the move to a new facility. That includes sorting out all the paperwork,� he said. “We are working with every family and every resident to find a new facility of their choice that will meet their needs.� Mr Ripper said the closure was not a financial decision. Staff entitlements for the 40 employees will be paid in full. “We have carers, cleaners, cooks and nurses, all largely casual and part-time,� he said. “We are assisting them with resume writing, interview skills [and] job seeking. “There are a number of existing not-for-profit and local homes that we are working with and

[who] have got space to accommodate residents and staff. “The community health centre is strong, vibrant and growing and we have the cash available to immediately repay all the accommodation bonds and pay all staff.� Mr Ripper anticipates the Sunbury Lions Community Aged Care Facility will close on March 13 but he said he would ensure all residents and their families are looked after before the shutdown. “We will not close the doors until every resident has found a suitable home,� he said. The aged care facility opened in 1991 as a hostel with approval to care for 26 residents.

Travel relief for cancer patients By Jessica Micallef Cancer patients in the Macedon Ranges now have access to treatment closer to home. The region’s first oncology chemotherapy service at Kyneton District Health was launched last week. Patients will be able to receive a range of treatments including chemotherapy, blood transfusions and immunotherapy. Before the service opened, Kyneton District Health cancer patients had to travel to Bendigo Cancer Centre to receive treatment.
The first patients will be treated at the Kyneton oncology chemotherapy service at the end of the month. The service will be overseen by medical oncologist Dr Sam Harris. He has been running an oncology clinic twice a month at the Ambulatory Care Centre at Kyneton District Health since 2018. Dr Harris said Macedon Ranges’ first oncology service would remove the “added burden” of travelling. “The team … have always been passionate about patients receive treatment as close to
home as possible,” he said. “The challenges of a cancer diagnosis and related treatment are large enough, without the added burden of travel. “Patients across the Macedon Ranges have routinely travelled one to two hours for treatment, often on a weekly basis. “With the launch of this chemotherapy service here in Kyneton, we hope to alleviate some of the stress associated with accessing cancer treatment.” The Lions Club of Kyneton raised more than $3000 last year for the new cancer treatment
service. The money went towards purchasing a designated chemotherapy refrigerator. Dr Harris said patients receiving treatment will benefit from a holistic approach to their care with the support of Kyneton District Health’s allied health team. Physiotherapists, dietitians, social workers and occupational therapists will be on hand with Dr Harris to create a personalised program tailored to each patient’s treatment plan. Festival just the bee’s knees There’s a buzz around Diggers Rest as it prepares for a swarm to next month’s Honey Festival. Run by the J Beekeeping School in Diggers Rest, the festival brings more than 500 people together to discover the world of bees, honey and the importance of these tiny insects on the environment. Carl Hornstrand from the school said it was the biggest event the school runs each year, and was always a fun family day out. “It’s something we’ve done every year since
the club started,” Mr Hornstrand said. “It’s about teaching young and old beekeepers how to keep bees, and why they’re so important to Mother Nature. “We have food trucks, kids activities, and all sorts of things to keep people busy on the day. “We have a program where we show people how to extract honey from a hive, and lots of live exhibits for people to enjoy.” One of the highlights every year is the bee beard competition during which experts coax a swarm of bees onto their face to give a stunning

Nearly 200 birds have been removed from a suspected cockfighting operation on a Malmsbury property. RSPCA Victoria inspectors, Macedon Ranges and Brimbank council officers and Victoria Police searched the Malmsbury property on February 12. Inspectors discovered 75 roosters – all allegedly groomed for cockfighting – and a further 119 birds including chicks, mature hens and juvenile roosters. All birds were removed from the property. Cockfighting implements were also removed. According to the RSPCA, the property owner is currently eight years into a 10 year ban for being in charge of poultry, resulting from a prior prosecution. RSPCA Victoria inspectorate team leader Karen Collier said the successful removal of birds was achievable because of the joint efforts of the four organisations. “Those involved in this investigation were pleased with the outcome, it is a shocking reality that cockfighting, a barbaric activity, continues to operate in Victoria,” she said. Macedon Ranges council’s assets and operations director Shane Walden said council officers played a key role in sourcing information that resulted in the search. “Council takes a zero tolerance approach to animal fighting and works closely with the RSPCA and Victoria Police to stamp out any identified cruelty to animals.” Cockfighting and possessing equipment designed for cockfighting is illegal in Australia.

A 39-year-old Sunbury man has had his car impounded for 30 days after police caught him travelling at more than 100km/h over the speed limit earlier this month. The motorist was allegedly driving at 228km/h in a 110km/h zone on the Calder Freeway near Gap Road. The car was impounded at a cost of $1005. The man was arrested for conduct endangering life, dangerous speed and other traffic-related offences.

An Archibald prize-winner’s artwork will be up for grabs at the 46th annual Woodend Lions Art Show. Held across the Labour Day weekend, the art show will this year raise funds for The East Gippsland Emergency Fund and BlazeAid – an organisation that works with families in rural Australia after natural disasters. Sunbury Road ‘catastrophe’ By Jessica Micallef Sunbury Road is a “catastrophe” according to Hume’s deputy mayor. Cr Jack Medcraft is calling on the state government and VicRoads to duplicate Sunbury Road, from the corner of Oaklands Road to Melbourne Airport, to ease traffic congestion. The council has written to Roads Minister Jaala Pulford and VicRoads to reinforce its view and the “need” to duplicate Sunbury Road to the north end of the airport. Cr Medcraft said traffic on the popular road wasn’t going to improve. “With the new works they have got [at the airport], the traffic is going to be fed onto Sunbury Road which means you are going to have four lanes going into one lane which is causing a whole lot of bank up … into the airport precinct,” he said. “We had a meeting with Melbourne Airport and we both … agreed that this is going to be a massive problem in the future. “With the airport expanding, traffic will double there. How are they [motorists] going to get out of the airport? “What we have asked is for the government and VicRoads to look at duplicating it from where the freeway goes to two lanes … until it gets to Oaklands Road. “This is not a council road. We can advocate for things to be done but we can’t do them ourselves, it’s not our place to do that.” The Jacksons Creek ward councillor said residents in surrounding suburbs were using Sunbury Road to avoid “bottlenecks” in their area. He said infrastructure, including roads, was not keeping up with residential development.

“In the morning, we are having … residents of Craigieburn … using that road to get in because they don’t want to go down Mickleham Road and get caught up in the bottlenecks there,” he said. “If we can get this road done, it’s going to ease
the congestion you are going to experience over the next how many years. “It should take 12 to 15 minutes to get from Sunbury to Melbourne Airport. During the peak periods, it can take you over an hour just to get through the bottleneck.”

Ranges’ mayor appointed to advisory panel Macedon Ranges mayor Janet Pearce has been appointed to the 2020 Local Government Mayoral Advisory Panel. The role of the panel is to provide high level advice to Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek on a range of legislative, regulatory, strategic and policy decisions that impact local councils. The panel comprises of 15 mayors from across the state. The group will meet four times a year. Cr Pearce said it was a great honour to be appointed to the panel, which brings together mayors from a variety of municipalities. “It is great to see the diversity on the panel, not only in terms of location but in the broad range of experience and backgrounds of the mayors participating,” she said. “This is an exciting opportunity for Macedon Ranges Shire to have a voice at the state government level, for mayors from across the state to work together towards a common goal to build on existing partnerships and be strong advocates for our communities. “It will be a chance not only to impart knowledge and experience, but to listen, learn and share.” The Local Government Mayoral Advisory Panel’s first meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 26. Kyneton’s finest remembered By Jessica Micallef Tributes are flowing in for a man remembered for his “enthusiasm and great brilliance”. Much-loved Kyneton identity Eric Scoble, 69, died earlier this month. Mr Scoble was known for wearing Kyneton on his sleeve. He had been a part of the annual Kyneton and Daffodil and Arts Festival for more than 40 years and was the event’s president since 2013. He was also widely involved in the Kyneton sports community. He was made a life member of the Kyneton Junior Soccer Club, was a secretary for the Kyneton Cycling Club and
had been part of Kyneton Little Athletics for 20 years. Festival secretary Marg Dearricott said Mr Scoble was an energetic and generous community member. “Not just with the festival but in many organisations,” she said. “He did a lot of generous work for the Stroke Foundation. “He was a great encouragement for all people to be involved in all sorts of capacity. He was a most wonderful ferret race organiser and he entertained hundreds of people. “We will miss him so much in the festival because of his great expertise in daffodils. “He has been a major player in a daffodil
bulb sale which has been a great fundraiser for the festival.” Mr Scoble and his wife Janet were crowned daffodil king and queen in 1999. He was appointed as an officer of the Order of Australia in last year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list. At the time, he told Star Weekly everything he had ever done, was for Kyneton. “I’ve done it from the heart, not for the glory of it,” he said. “I was born and bred in Kyneton.” Ms Dearricott said Mr Scoble will be remembered as a “legend”. “He will be remembered in creating something that has been a fabulous event,” she said.

Courting new members Sunbury Ladies Badminton Club is on a membership drive. The club, which meets twice a week at Sunbury’s Eric Boardman Stadium, is calling on women to pick up a racquet and join in the fun. There are about 45 female members of the club, but secretary Cathie Briggs said they are aiming for “plenty more”. “We’d love to have 100 members,” she said. “We are open to anyone. Our oldest member is 80 years plus. “We have room for plenty more.” Ms Briggs, who has been with the club for more than 20 years, said players had the chance to take part in annual tournaments and the Atalanta Jamboree – a national badminton competition.
“We have Monday morning social games from 9.30am-noon and that’s open to anyone of all levels to play, and then we’ve got Thursday mornings, which is teams,” she said. “We have morning tea, social activities, awards nights and long-service recognition.” Ms Briggs said the club offered free child minding, and equipment and coaching is provided. MY PLACE Sue Buckman was the joint winner of Hume’s Citizen of the Year. The Sunbury resident has a vision to make all public places “rescue ready” in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. She spoke with Jessica Micallef.
What are you passionate about? My biggest passion is trying to make all sporting clubs, community groups, public places and workplaces ‘rescue ready’. By this I mean having people that can react to a sudden cardiac arrest, know how to perform quality CPR, and be capable and confident to use a defibrillator. But in order for this to happen, there needs to be a defibrillator at hand, which is not always the case. How did it feel to be named joint Citizen of the Year? When I was contacted by Hume council and told that I had been nominated and was joint winner with Tracie … I was shocked, to say the least. It was an honour to be standing alongside Tracie and the other winners. There are so many people that do amazing work within our community and to be recognised by the local community for what we do is a true honour. Tell me about Defib for Life – how did this organisation come about? Defib for Life came to life in late 2010, with the passion and drive of Andrew White. In May, 2010, my son Stephen was at football training at Rupertswood Football Club in Sunbury, when
he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. The club had … highly-trained first aid staff that jumped into action within seconds and started CPR. Andrew was at the ground with his two sons and was a MICA Paramedic. Unfortunately, the club didn’t have a defibrillator which, along with CPR, can restart the heart. All the local ambulances were out on other jobs, so an ambulance was dispatched from St Albans. The medical staff at the club worked tirelessly to save Stephen, but unfortunately, at the age of 19, Stephen passed away. Andrew knew that if a defibrillator was at hand, things may have been different. Andrew then went about looking at how he could ensure defibrillators could be implemented at clubs and sporting grounds. Later that year, Andrew came to me and asked if Defib For Life could be in memory of Stephen. So together we went about sharing our heartache and our vision to have these life saving devices in clubs. What do you hope to achieve with the organisation? To see defibrillators alongside fire extinguishers; to have defibrillators part of all first aid kits; to help dispel the many myths around the use of defibrillators; and to encourage the public to learn CPR. What is your connection to Sunbury? My family moved to Sunbury in 1993, when our first child was two-years-old. We built our first home in Elizabeth Drive. We had two other children, then built our new home in Jacksons Hill a few years later, and stayed there until 2013. All three children have attended primary and high school in Sunbury and played sport with local Sunbury clubs.

Engineering a new career James Woollard has reached a new career goal. The Benloch resident won the Apprentice of the Year: Engineering (Fabrication) award at Bendigo TAFE’s annual Industry Excellence Award ceremony earlier this month. The 27-year-old said he was proud of his achievement. “I was very excited to receive the award,” he said. “It meant all the hard work that I had put in got recognised.” Mr Woollard previously studied a certificate III in heavy fabrication at Bendigo TAFE. He started an apprenticeship with Woodend’s Barker Trailers three years ago. “I was with another company and that didn’t work out for me,” he said. “I walked in the door [at Barker Trailers] one day and asked
for a job and that was it. I enjoy the variety at Barker Trailers because there is never a trailer that’s exactly the same, which means your job is always different … some trailers take seven days to build and then others might take a full 45-day build.” Working in engineering has always been a dream of Mr Woollard’s. He said the skills and knowledge he learnt while at school has helped him during his career. “It’s always been what I have wanted to do. I have always made stuff all my life,” he said. “Stuff you learn at work you can apply at trade school and the stuff you learn at trade school you can apply at work.” Jessica Micallef

Planning Scheme Amendment C118 The Minister for Planning has approved Amendment C118macr to the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme. The Amendment came into operation on 20 September 2019. The Amendment: Applies the Heritage Overlay to the 37 heritage places in Gisborne, New Gisborne and Kyneton on a permanent basis. Amends Clause 21.08 to include the Gisborne and Kyneton Heritage Study updated in December 2018 as a new reference document and relocates the application requirements to the Schedule to Clause 43.01 (Heritage Overlay). Amends the Schedule to Clause 43.01 (Heritage Overlay) to insert the application requirements from Clause 21.08, replace the interim controls affecting 37 heritage places with permanent heritage controls and amends the schedule to ensure consistency with the Ministerial Direction – The Form and Content of Planning Schemes, August 2019. Planning Scheme Amendment C117 The Minister for Planning has approved Amendment C117macr to the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme. The Amendment came into operation on 16 January 2020. The Amendment: applies a Development Plan Overlay (DPO24) to approximately 60 hectares of land within three areas zoned General Residential Zone (Schedule 1) and Low Density Residential Zone in LanceďŹ eld; amends Clause 21. 13-8 (LanceďŹ eld) of the Municipal Strategic Statement to correct a township boundary mapping error shown on the LanceďŹ eld Strategic Framework Plan; inserts a new Schedule 24 to Clause 43.04 (Development Plan Overlay) to guide a coordinated and site responsive approach to future residential development within three areas of LanceďŹ eld. SPORT Roar with the upper hand By Tara Murray Sunbury has its eyes on an outright win and top spot in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 5 Russell Pollock Shield. Facing Sunshine YCW in a do-or-die match in the fi nal round, the Roar has the upper hand after day one. With six sides fighting for four spots, second-placed Sunbury has already claimed fi rst innings points, while all other matches are still up for grabs. Roar captain-coach Craig Ballinger said their mindset heading into the game was the key behind their performance. “We entered the game in a bit of a fi nals mindset,” he said. “If we didn’t turn up and perform, that’s the end of the season.” The Roar bowled Sunshine out for just 48. They used three bowlers, with Jason McGowan taking 6-22. Michael Treweek also took three wickets. Ballinger said Treweek continues to make batters play and make mistakes. The Roar were keen to make sure that they got the job done on day one, with wet weather already playing a major role this season. Ballinger said at the same time they were pretty cautious. “Last round we were in trouble at 5-40
quickly, so we had to get through the fi rst hour and not lose wickets. “We wanted to bat a bit of time and hopefully get the points.” Sunbury will resume at 4-110. Ballinger made 54. Ballinger said despite having secured fi rst innings points, they wanted to claim an outright win and try and secure top spot. The fi rst innings victory is enough to secure a fi nals spot. “We’re going to go hammer and tong to go and get an outright,” he said. “Moonee Valley is in a bit of strife and if we can get the job done, hopefully we’ll play a couple of home fi nals. “The pressure is off and you can already feel it around the rooms, a sense of relief.” All six of the Roar’s senior sides, five men’s and one women’s, have made fi nals. Ballinger said it was a fi rst for the club. “It’s starting to show how much the club is starting to become a destination club, a club with a point of difference.”

Rymer steps up for Bulldogs to take on coaching role

Gisborne midcourter Tarryn Rymer is going to make the most of a year off the court after taking on the A-grade coaching role at the Bendigo Netball League club. Rymer, a key player for the Bulldogs for a number of years, has always wanted to step up and coach Gisborne’s A-grade netball side, but the timing hasn’t been right. She has coached at the club for nine years, including seven with the under-17 side, while combining playing in the A-grade side. This year she will coach the A-grade and A-reserve sides. Rymer said the opportunity to step up and coach the A-grade side had come at a perfect time. “I’ve always been coaching the under-17s and wanted to coach them and work on the development of the players coming through the club,“ she said. “I’ve wanted to build up to A-grade coaching, but also as a player I didn’t want to step up and take too much on. “I’m having a baby this year and taking time off playing, so it’s a perfect time to focus on the
coaching side as I’m not playing.” Rymer has grown up at the Bulldogs with her mum Noelene having a massive impact on setting up the netball program at the club and is still involved with it today. She said she couldn’t see herself coaching anywhere else. “Mum is in the Hall of Fame and both my parents are legends of the club,“ she said. “My passion for netball is because of her passion.“ “They are why I’m so passionate about the club and my body is basically red, white and blue. “My sister has coached A-grade for several years and my brother in-law and nephews also play at the club.“ Having only been appointed last week, the Bulldogs and Rymer are slightly behind the eight ball with getting their squad together. The Bulldogs had advertised for a coach back in November, but took their time to make a decision. On court, Rymer knows the core group of players and their strengths and weaknesses. “Just thinking about that and I’ve coached most of the side besides Tiana
Newman, who I’ve played with since under-11s. “I know what works with them and what doesn’t which is a good thing.” She said Newman had done a mountain of work trying to get a squad together for this season, while they were still looking to add a couple more players. The core group of last season is set to return with Rymer obviously an out, while Ciara Fitzgerald is moving interstate. The Bulldogs finished second last year before going out in straight sets. Rymer said they were still talking to a few members of last year’s team and were hopeful that they would return. They have held trials, but the squads were yet to be completed. Tazma Morris and Rylee Connell, who predominately played in the A-reserve side last season, will play in A-grade this year. “We’re still waiting on a few new girls and we’re yet to have confirmation of numbers.” The Bulldogs kick off their season on Good Friday against arch rival Kyneton. RDFNL The Riddell District Football Netball League will face the Southern Football Netball League in an interleague clash on May 16. With AFL Victoria deciding not to hold the AFL Victoria Community Championships, leagues were left to rearrange their own interleague matches. The RDFNL and Southern FNL played each other last year, with the RDFNL winning both the senior netball and football in thrillers. Rupo moves into top four By Tara Murray Rupertswood has moved into the Gisborne and District Cricket Association Johnstone Shield top four heading into the final round. With six teams still fighting for finals spots, a win on Saturday against Wallan was vital for Rupertswood and its finals hopes. Rupo captain-coach Andrew Pizaro said: “Every game is a final at the moment. “I spoke with the boys after the game, that at the end of the season, our season will be measured on success in other ways, not as a team, but as a club. “So far what we are hoping for the next couple of years is happening now and they [the young players] are performing for us and you can’t hold them back, they want to play cricket. “We can brush off playing finals and it will be a new learning curve for them. “If it doesn’t come for the first XI they’ll get behind the rest of the club.” On Saturday, they faced a Wallan side also keen on securing a top four spot. Rupo stepped up with the ball and then the
bat to come home with a convincing win. The Magpies were bowled out for 137, giving Rupo a manageable run chase. Pizaro said the key was to get both openers for the Magpies and they were able to make their batsmen make mistakes. “It was a reward for consistently making the batsmen make mistakes,” he said. “It put us in a situation with a total that we thought we could chase down.” Will Honner took 4-37 and Joel Muir was tidy taking 3-15. Pizaro said Honner had been on the fringe of the side when he came back to the club, but had proved a vital player. “Having a look at his stats he had the best strike rate going around,” he said. “The longer he bowls the better he bowls and he bowls a heavy ball and is outstanding.” He said Muir, in his first season at the club, continued to get better each week and was taking more responsibility on field. Rupo had no issue getting the runs. After a slow start, they finished 5-161. Pizaro said the most pleasing thing was how
they got the runs. “The last two games we’ve started to make some good runs,” he said. “Wallan bowled really well and stopped us in the first 10 overs. Jordan Curran got 54 and batted outstanding and others chipped in around him. “To lose only five wickets after needing 107 off the last 20 overs was really good.” The win moves Rupertswood up to third with four points separating third to sixth heading into the final round. Gisborne will open its FFA Cup campaign against Brunswick Zebras on the weekend of February 29. The Sky Blues, which plays in FFV state league 4 west, enter the cup in round one, which consists of teams that have made it through qualifying rounds and other state league 4 sides. Gisborne lost in round one last year.
NWMCA Lancefield finished the regular season of the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association women’s division 1 season with a loss against ladder leaders Burnside Springs. Lancefield made 6-83 off its 20 overs with Kristy Carbis top scoring with 23 not out. Short two players, it was always going to be tough in the field, with Burnside all out for 87. Carbis took three wickets to complete a good allround game. Lancefield will face Aberfeldie in a knock out semi final this weekend.
