Dog rescue home opens A long-awaited Stafford Rescue Victoria facility dedicated to looking after our four-legged staffie friends is finally open. Known as the Darren and Phillip’s Rescue Retreat, the facility will be able to house up to five pure bred Staffordshire bull terriers. The retreat, which opened on Thursday, will assist in the re-homing of dogs that have been surrendered from pounds and homes and provide medical assistance to injured staffies. The Darren and Phillip’s Rescue Retreat is located on a 32-hectare Carlsruhe property that is also home to rescued sheep, horses and pigs.

The retreat includes “large” sleeping quarters, dog runs, a paddock, shaded areas and a shed for volunteers. Stafford Rescue Victoria president Jan Hutton said a $50,000 grant from the Animal Welfare Department helped build the facility. Ms Hutton then raised a further $100,000 with the help of fellow furry friends and an online crowdfunding campaign. “Two dogs called Darren and Phillip, who are called The Blueboys, donated a huge portion of that money from raising funds from the sale of their calendars and clothing line,” she said. “We raised the money a year ago. It was just getting a permit.

“We’re always raising money, we’ve got a dog that is costing us $14,000 for two hip replacements.” Construction started on the Carlsruhe facility in June last year. Before, Ms Hutton and her volunteers were operating in boarding facilities throughout the Macedon Ranges. “We were operating in different places,” she said. “Another lady was looking after some of the dogs. “We’ve been operating for many years but now we have got a brand new modern, start-of-the-art facility. “I really do thank the Department of Animal Welfare for giving us that grant to get us

kick-started. Every cent helps.” Now that Ms Hutton has a new, permanent site, she is calling on locals to lend a helping hand to not only assist with the dogs, but to educate people on the “misunderstood” breed. “We definitely need … local volunteers,” she said. “We have about 30 [volunteers] but they are not here every day. “We need some volunteers during the week. “They [Staffordshire bull terriers] are a misunderstood breed. “A lot of people get them thinking they are just a dog that can be left in the backyard but they are so needy for human companionship.” Details: staffordrescuevictoria.org.au

Greater protection for towns By Jessica Micallef The Macedon Ranges will be protected against over-development and “urban sprawl” for the next 50 years. Planning Minister Richard Wynne launched an updated Statement of Policy Planning for the Macedon Ranges last week, which now specifies that protected boundaries for towns including Kyneton, Lancefield, Riddells Creek and Woodend will require government approval to change. The Statement of Planning Policy is a 50-year vision and strategy which provides a

framework to ensure the landscapes, settlement history, the natural environment, catchments and biodiversity of the Macedon Ranges are protected, conserved and enhanced. Mr Wynne said the planning policy would provide planning certainty to the community. “You now know what the rules are going to be, where settlement can occur, where settlement boundaries are going to be, and indeed where areas that are so precious to the community will have enduring protections as well,” he said. Mr Wynne said there was still work to be done on finalising settlement boundaries for Gisborne and Romsey.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the updated planning policy was a win for the Macedon Ranges to protect its “beautiful landscapes”. “I’m delighted our beautiful and environmentally-sensitive region is getting the protection it deserves and that we have delivered on our commitment to the people of the Macedon Ranges,” she said. “This is very definitive in terms of setting boundaries for our townships outside of which residential development cannot occur. Farmland is protected, our waterways are protected, it really gives great certainty.”

In May 2018, the Planning and Environment Act was amended to reflect the declaration of the Macedon Ranges as a “distinctive area”. In August 2018, the Macedon Ranges became the first area in Victoria designated as a distinctive area to protect the region from over-development and “urban sprawl”. Following community input, the Statement of Planning Policy was prepared by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning together with Macedon Ranges council. The policy was approved and came into effect in December last year. To read the statement, visit: bit.ly/2uICcdj

Fresh take on old market The Macedon CFA flea market is on again and is continuing to embrace a fresh new look. The market, now in its 52nd year, is one of the brigade’s major fundraisers. Since the market’s establishment in 1968, the market has helped to raise more than $340,000 through auctions of second-hand donated goods. The money has gone towards purchasing five community-owned tankers, nine forward control vehicles, breathing apparatus, radio

equipment, hoses, building a storage shed and extending current and previous fire stations, including kitchen renovations. Last year’s market included a new twist on an old favourite – the second-hand auction was transformed into a goods and services auction. Anything from lawn mowing services or car detailing will be up for grabs again at this year’s market. There will also be food, coffee, hot jam

donuts, cake and book stalls and the chance for market-goers to have a chat with firefighters about their fire plan. Children will be catered for with rides, face-painting, mini fire truck races and a special visit from Wild Action Zoo’s Chris Humfrey. The market is on Saturday, February 29 from 9am at the Macedon CFA, corner of Smith and Victoria streets. Jessica Micallef

Western Water customers in Lancefield and Romsey will experience a change in their water taste this month when their local water supply is switched. The two towns have received water through a local supply system since November, but storage levels have dropped significantly during summer, resulting in a necessary water supply change. The Lancefield Basin, currently at about 34 per cent capacity, will be supplemented by the Kerrie Reservoir and the local bore will be switched off. Wright Reservoir is down to about 61 per cent capacity and will be supplemented by Rosslynne Reservoir. As a result of the supply change, customers may notice a slightly different taste to their drinking water. Western Water’s acting general manager, Paul Clark said a variation in taste was normal. “All the drinking water we supply is safe, healthy to drink and meets the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines,” he said. “The change in taste experienced by some customers is normal as water from different sources can vary.” According to Western Water, water from the Rosslynne Reservoir is fluoridated and is in line with the Department of Health and Human Services requirements. If you have questions about water fluoridation, call the Western Water on 1300 761 874.

Sunbury’s Stella Gibbons is Northern Hospital’s cupcake queen. Ms Gibbons has been baking cupcakes for the hospital’s emergency department staff since 2018, dropping off the baked goods every four-to-six weeks. She recently baked her 1000th cupcake. She began baking cupcakes when her daughter, Genevieve, completed her postgraduate emergency nursing qualification at the hospital. “Gen came home one day and she’d had a really hard night shift. She slept all day, so while she was sleeping, I baked two dozen red velvet cupcakes for her to take back to the next night shift,” she said. “I just kept making two dozen, and then it went up to four dozen – and

now I’m up to nine dozen.” While her daughter now only works at Northern Hospital as a casual nurse, Ms Gibbons continues to bake for the emergency department staff because she knows how challenging their work can be. “If they can come up here, have a coffee or tea and a cupcake, just decompress – that’s what it’s about,” Ms Gibbons said. ” Emergency department associate nurse unit manager Julia Fotiadis said Ms Gibbons gesture helped staff get through busy shifts. “Most days are challenging in the emergency department, so when Stella brings in cupcakes it brightens so many of our days.”

Response times gather speed By Jessica Micallef Ambulance response times in the Macedon Ranges have improved by more than half a minute, according to the latest data. Ambulance Victoria’s quarterly performance data for October to December 2019 shows ambulances arrived at the scene of emergencies 34 seconds quicker on average than the same time in 2018. On average, ambulances arrived in 12 minutes and 58 seconds – an improvement on 13 minutes and 32 seconds during the same

- Mary-Anne Thomas period in 2018. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said she was delighted with the work paramedics undertook. “We can thank our local hard-working paramedics, doctors, nurses and other health professionals for continuing to improve our

health and emergency services,” she said. “Our local ambulance services are transporting more urgent cases and our hospitals are treating more patients.” For Hume, the data for October to December 2019 showed ambulances arrived more than half a minute slower on average than the same time in 2018. The average response time was 11 minutes – up from 10 minutes and 31 seconds. Macedon Ranges paramedics responded to 533 code one calls between October and December 2019 – a slight increase from 530 the previous year.

The data also revealed 70.5 per cent of code one calls in the Macedon Ranges were responded to in less than 15 minutes – an improvement on 66 per cent the previous year. In Hume, ambulances responded to 3242 code one calls from October to December – up from 3127 during the same time period in 2018. More than 84 per cent of code one calls were responded to in less than 15 minutes, down from 87.8 per cent in 2018. Across the state, 78,820 code one calls were responded to between October and December – 4513 more than in the same period last year.

A flipping good cause The sweet smell of butter and maple syrup will waft throughout Gisborne this weekend. Gisborne Uniting Church volunteers will be flipping pancakes outside the IGA Supermarket in the Gisborne Shopping Centre on Saturday to mark Shrove Tuesday. Event co-ordinator Maree Clarke said 2020 marked the church’s 17th year taking part in the annual fundraiser. “Pancake Day is a great way for us to get together, have something good to eat and help others at the same time,” she said. “We have such a good time making pancakes and selling them to the very generous people of Gisborne and surrounds, and at the same time we are able to tell people about how Uniting [Church] makes a difference in the lives of those who do it tough.” Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, is the last day before the start of Lent – a period of fasting and prayer in the lead up to Easter.

The day references the old tradition of using all luxury ingredients in the pantry including flour, butter and eggs before the Lent period. Money raised from the sale of pancakes will be donated to Uniting Vic Tas – a not-for-profit organisation supporting people living in crisis. Grab yourself a pancake or two on Saturday, February 22 at 22 Brantome Street, Gisborne between 9.30am-12.30pm. Jessica Micallef

Gisborne kinder set to grow By Jessica Micallef Gisborne’s littlest residents will soon be able to learn and play in a new and improved kindergarten. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas announced earlier this month Macedon Ranges council had received a $500,000 grant to upgrade Gisborne’s Swinburne Avenue Kindergarten. The grant, through the state government’s Children’s Facilities Capital Program, will go towards a $735,000 project to upgrade the kinder. The money will be used to extend the kinder

to provide extra places for local families and improve the learning environment for children. An additional meeting room for visiting health services will also be built. The funding announcement follows a $91,600 upgrade to the centre through the state government’s Inclusive Kindergarten Facilities Program, which provided a new automatic entry door, acoustic treatments and disability-friendly children’s toilets. Ms Thomas said funding for local kindergartens was crucial in getting children ready for school. “This is about boosting early learning facilities in Gisborne and this exciting new

project will ensure our littlest Gisborne residents have the opportunity to get the best start in life, she said. Education Minister James Merlino said $5 billion will be invested in the next 10 years to deliver two years of funded kindergarten for all Victorian children. “We’re delivering unprecedented investment in early childhood services as part of our historic $5 billion investment in delivering funded three-year-old kindergarten, he said. Boost for BMX club Sunbury BMX Club members can now enjoy a new pavilion at the Sunbury Skate Park. The club’s pavilion opened on Sunday after four months of construction. Club president Russell Hocking said the pavilion was “pretty spectacular. “It’s one of the best in Victoria, he said. “It’s got a commercial kitchen, we have an area for people who do scoring and registration in an office with windows. “We have a viewing area, we can have chairs and tables, and we can hold training and workshops on how to fix bikes. “There are toilet facilities which normally we haven’t had one on site [and] we’ve got first aid rooms. “It’s going to have all the facilities that we need to set up and pack up a lot easier. And it’ll be better facilities for the riders.

Sports and Recreation Victoria contributed $100,000 to the project, to go with Hume council’s $873,000 commitment. Despite an act of vandalism to the pavilion a week before Christmas, Mr Hocking said club members were looking forward. “The club is excited to finally have a facility like this because ‌ we do a lot of hard work,â€? he said. “When we used to hold committee meetings, we would have to look for other venues. “The facility will make life easier for all the volunteers that help out at the club.â€? Haze link to heart health By Goya Dmytryshchak Bushfire smoke haze may increase the number of cardiac arrests and other heart problems across Victoria and further afield, according to new research. Williamstown’s Anjali Haikerwal, whose doctorate examined health impacts of the 2006-07 Victorian bushfires, found that just two days of exposure to small particulate matter (PM2.5) was associated with increased risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and hospital admissions for cardiovascular problems. Microscopic PM2.5 pollution is about a third the width of a human hair, or smaller than a speck of dust, and is inhaled straight into the lungs and bloodstream. “These particles may act as a trigger factor for acute cardiovascular events; therefore it’s important not to delay seeking medical help if you experience symptoms of heart problems during smoke episodes from bushfires,â€? Dr Haikerwal said. Using statewide data from the Victorian Ambulance Cardiac Arrest Registry and Department of Health and Human Services, Dr Haikerwal found a nearly seven per cent increase in out-of-hospital cardiac arrests and about two per cent increase in emergency department visits and hospitalisations for acute cardiac events. People aged 65 and over and men were the most vulnerable. Her findings were published in the prestigious Journal of the American Heart Association. She said more research was needed into medium to long-term health impacts of smoke exposure from intense bushfires burning for days and weeks as witnessed recently. “It’s very unprecedented at present –

the smoke haze which has lingered on in Melbourne and neighbouring places and Victoria for days, Dr Haikerwal said. “In recent weeks, most parts of Australia have been shrouded in bushfire smoke for days with very poor to hazardous air quality

– high levels of small particulate matter PM2.5 – reported in many cities and towns. “And the most important thing is the levels of these harmful particulate matter – they have been in the atmosphere for weeks now and at levels which are very harmful to a human body.

School dental program raises a smile Sunbury and Macedon Ranges children will be showing off their pearly whites thanks to a state government initiative. Public primary and high schools in both areas have been invited to join in the Smile Squad free dental program. Smile Squad vans will visit schools and dentists will provide free check-ups, teeth cleaning, fluoride application, fissure sealants, fillings, root canals and any other non-cosmetic treatments required. The program, which started in August last year, is expanding to include schools in the Macedon Ranges, Maribyrnong, Melton, Campaspe, East Gippsland, Wangaratta and parts of Hume and Casey. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said poor dental care early on could lead to more serious health problems later in life. “I encourage all local schools to take up the invitation to have Smile Squad vans visit them this year so all children can have the opportunity for free dental check-ups, she said. “When it comes to oral health care, early prevention is the key and the Smile Squad program is designed to set our kids up with healthy habits for the rest of their lives. The program will be rolled out to all schools across the state by 2022. Details: smilesquad.vic.gov.au Jessica Micallef

“Idyllic Country Living” 1.6 hectares approx. 214 Knox Road ROMSEY The convenience of close proximity to the township of Romsey and a property which offers a charming garden plus excellent infrastructure for the equine enthusiast, truly idyllic country living. The extremely private property has been cleverly designed to make the most of its corner location and the rich fertile soil. Surrounding the slightly “retro” 1970’s home are superb established gardens, an orchard and a very pretty dam. Looking towards Mt William the property opens and boasts several well positioned horse paddocks with excellent fencing plus horse shelter, 2 stables, dam and mountain views. Established trees provide excellent shade and shelter while the fertile soil encourages good feed.

“SAFETY FIRST”

$795,000 - $840,000

As of the first of July 2020, there will be a number of changes to the Legislation regarding Property Management and, in particular, the obligations of the “Property Provider” currently known as the “Landlord”.

• Three bedrooms all with built-inrobes • Family bathroom • Laundry and separate toilet • Wide undercover entertainment area • Excellent infrastructure for the equine enthusiast

To date the new Legislation is still in the formative stage and has not yet become Law. Rest assured that as the changes do become Law our new, highly experienced, professional, ethical and hard-working Property Manager, Emily, will be abreast of the situation and between us we will keep you all informed. In the meantime there is one area about to see changes for Landlords (Property Providers), which we are inclined to take for granted – Smoke Detectors.

There is something quite magical about this country property – privacy, peace, an abundance of water and mountain views. Bring the family and the animals and enjoy an idyllic country property conveniently located on the edge of Romsey.

This week Emily and I meet with a service provider for Smoke Detectors and I became aware of a number of issues pertaining to my own home and I suspect many of your homes. Smoke Detectors have a “useby-date” – be aware of it. Smoke Detectors need regular services and cleaning and Smoke Detectors must be in the correct place within the home.

The solid 1970’s home consists of: • Comfortable lounge with an outlook to the front verandah and gardens • A “retro” kitchen with plenty of bench space and storage • Meals area

OPEN 7 DAYS

We have Smoke Detectors for three reasons – 1) to wake us in time to save our homes 2) to save our lives and 3) to ensure that our insurance policy is valid. “Safety First” means taking care of our Smoke Detectors.

Two former players headline a small group of recruits for Riddell District Football League reigning premiers Rupertswood. The Sharks have kept most of their premiership-winning team together and have been quiet on the recruiting front, choosing to back-in the players already at the club. Sharks coach Nick Ash said with all three senior sides making the grand final last season, they had plenty of players at the club who could step up. “We want to keep getting games into kids,” he said. “We’re not going out and heavily recruiting. “Those who are 21-22 [years of age] are the future of the club and we have to make sure they are getting full seasons, not one or two games. “There were guys stiff last year to not get more games.” Ash said they always kept an eye on former players and were thrilled to get Jorden Braddy and Bailee Revell back into the fold. Braddy, who has spent the past three years in the Essendon District Football League, will take over the number one ruck role with Dean Putt to play in the country. Ash said Braddy had made major inroads the past couple of years. “His ruck work was top notch my first year here and being at a higher level it has improved even more,” he said. “He has been learning the craft at Aberfeldie. He has come on leaps and bounds. He will be

valuable and, at the age of 28, is in his prime.” Ash said he hadn’t seen a lot of Revell, who left the club after under-16s. Revell had been playing with Airport West in the EDFL. Ash said when they heard he was available, they were keen to have a chat. “By all reports he’s a good kid and real acquisition to the side. “We’ll probably look for him to play forward and then through the midfield. We can throw him down back if we need to.” Another former Shark, Chris Lucas, Keilor duo Harrison Bult and Angus Taylor, and Stanhope’s Jesse Olsen round out the recruits. Bult is a key forward, while Taylor will likely play in the middle of the ground. Premiership players Jake Sutton, Todd Podolczak and Jackson Berry aren’t returning. Ash said they weren’t expecting to see much of Billy Cannolo because of his VFL commitments. In a bonus, Nick Grigg, who hinted at retirement after last year’s grand final, is playing on. Ash said the group was focused on making sure the club is again among the contenders this season. “There’s a fair bit of belief,” he said. “We worked extremely hard to get into the position to win a premiership and the group now knows how hard it is to win one. “The level of training is really good and the boys are doing extra work and pushing hard on the track. We’re in the premiership window, we have to work hard to achieve it.”

13 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 18 February, 2020

SPORT A Tadd of experience for Kyneton’s women’s team Ray Tadd has spent most of his life around football clubs, but he says taking on the Kyneton women’s coaching role is one of his more challenging roles. Tadd has played more than 500 games of football and coached senior, junior and masters football. Having helped out the side last year, Tadd said the timing was right for him to get back into coaching. Director of Women’s Football Natalie Korinfsky coached the side last year, after they parted ways with their coach during the pre-season. “I’ve been doing a bit of ruck coaching with the girls,” Tadd said. “Nat had been talking to me for a couple of years, but it wasn’t right. “I had a chat with them and how serious they are about their footy. I couldn’t coach if it was going to be a kick and giggle. “I want to teach them proper football. They

said they were in.” Tadd said because many players hadn’t grown up playing football or were new to the game all together, they were at a disadvantage compared to their male counterparts. He said working with female footballers also had its positives. “They don’t have any preconceived ideas about things,” he said. “They are prepared to learn.” Tadd said Korinfsky did a fantastic job with the group as a first year coach, with being a playing-coach not the easiest role. He said numbers on the track were good and they were still looking for more people who might be interested in playing. “We’ve got about six to seven new girls from the previous season,” he said. “We’ve had 24 players train at least once and there’s still another eight or nine players who haven’t trained yet, so we’ve got about 30. The Tigers will again play in the Central

Victoria Football League Women’s competition which has expanded to seven teams. Tadd said they were looking to continue their development, having finished fifth last season with two wins. He said they had a number of practice matches lined up before the season starts. “We’re always going to be up against it against some of the Bendigo teams,” he said. “Last season we went from losing by nearly 150 points to losing by 70 to 80 points to some teams. “We want to keep building the numbers up and keep everyone interested in playing football. “We want this to be a place that people want to come to and keep developing the culture.” Anyone interested in playing can contact either Nat on 0439 642 192 or Kfnc. womensfootball@gmail.com, or Ray at 0438 274 147. Sunbury slide continues

Sports shorts CBL Kyneton Tigers’ Jessica Mangan was named in the Country Basketball League north-west women’s All-Star 5 last week. Mangan was a bright spark for the Tigers in an otherwise disappointing season, where the side missed finals. She follows in the footsteps of her sister Brooke Mangan, who was named in the All-Star 5 last season.

By Tara Murray Sunbury’s season is on the brink after a third straight loss in Bowls Victoria pennant division 1, section 2. Three poor matches have left Sunbury in a fight for a finals spot, after not too long ago looking certain to finish in the top four and aiming for a top two spot. On Saturday, Sunbury was given a lesson by top two side Glenroy, which won 100 (18)-58 (0). Sunbury’s David Glennon said Glenroy has had the wood over them in recent years. “It was an absolute nightmare,” he said. “We were always going to be up against it against Glenroy, but to lose by 42 shots, that’s disappointing. “That’s two weeks in a row that we’ve lost by pretty similar margins.” All four rinks suffered losses, with the closest margin being eight shots. Todd Trewarne lost 28-17, Mark Cowan went down 29-14, Lee Wesley lost 24-16 while Carla Krizanic’s rink fell short 19-11. Glennon said he could not remember the last time Sunbury’s top side lost three matches in a row and especially two big losses in a row. Sunbury remains in third spot, but the gap to the chasing teams has closed dramatically. They sit just four points clear of Altona Sports, with Werribee a further shot back. Sunbury plays those two teams in the final two rounds. Before that, they meet Aberfeldie CBC this weekend at home. Glennon said this weekend’s match was a must-win match if they wanted to play finals. He said that they needed to get their confidence back and put it together on the green. “We need to play better bowls,” he said. “It’s just a confidence thing now. We need to do more training and knuckle down to the task. “We need to get the win and keep the pressure on.” It was a mixed day for Sunbury with three of their six sides getting wins. The second side, which plays in division 3, had a big win and has secured a home final. Meanwhile, Australian star Krizanic will not be part of Australia’s 2020 World Bowls Championships team. Krizanic will skip this event as she is pregnant with her first child. The Commonwealth Games gold medalist was part of the women’s triples and fours teams that won gold at the last World Bowls Championships. In the Central Highlands Bowls Division, rain washed out the final round of the regular season in the top two grades.

FFV Sunbury United has added some players with National Premier League experience to its squad for the upcoming FV state league 3 north-west season. Goalkeeper Rory Curran, who played for Sunbury in 2017-18, returns to the club having spent last season at Altona Magic. Brothers Luke and Jake Parisi have joined Sunbury. Luke, a left back and Jake, a winger, have played at Springvale White Eagles and Hume City.

Big V The Sunbury Jets will unveil their championship flag in round one in the Big V men’s state championship division. The Jets, who have been promoted from division 1, will face Chelsea Gulls at home on March 14 in the opening round of the season. The Jets’ women’s side will kick off their season on the same night on the road against the Southern Peninsula Sharks. The women’s side face reigning premier Wyndham Devils the following week, in a double-header with the men’s sides.

NWMCA Lancefield suffered a loss to Youlden Parkville in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association women’s competition on Sunday. Lancefield batted first and made 4-114 from its overs. Youlden Parkville made the runs in the 17th over, finishing 4-118. It was all single wicket takers for the Tigers. The Tigers sit second with one round remaining before finals.

Gisborne Soccer Club sets sail on a new path It’s the beginning of a new era at the Gisborne Soccer Club. The club has appointed its first female president to lead a new-look committee as it aims to take things to the next level. Mel Paradiso takes over from Rodney Smith, who stood down late last year, and has already put her stamp on the role. Paradiso joined Gisborne in 2016 after spending five years at Sunbury United where she was on the committee, a team manager and a junior coach. In the past couple of years she has been involved both on the committee and as a team manager at Gisborne. “What I would like to achieve from being president is a bigger and better club,” she said. “There’s always room for improvement. I will endeavour to provide fairness and

transparency to all members. Our Mission Statement says it all. We want to support and promote the growth of junior and senior soccer in the local community, whilst promoting

community values and providing a quality learning environment for players of all ages and skill levels.” Paradiso’s big passion is helping grow female involvement within the club. It is looking to field a women’s side and six junior teams. The club didn’t have the numbers for a women’s team last season, but has been inundated with players wanting to join this season. Across the board, the Sky Blues have had a record number of players interested in playing this season. The club has tasted success at both junior and senior level in recent years, but Paradiso said the club shouldn’t be judged on results alone. “Our club policies are in place to provide a

great place for kids to grow in a great sport and it is a healthy team environment. “We want our kids to believe in the club’s values of fair play, growth and community.” On top of record numbers, the club’s home ground Dixon Field has received some much-needed upgrades. A new pavilion has been built, there’s a new cafeteria and change rooms and more works continue at the ground. The club is still looking for potential sponsors, coaches and volunteers to get involved. It is hosting a registration day on February 23 at Dixon Field. Roar dumped from T20s By Tara Murray Sunbury’s campaign in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association T20 competition came to an end on Sunday at the hands of Sunshine United. Sunbury had already upset one senior division side on the way to the semi-finals, but was up against it when it faced United. Sunbury usually plays in division 5, while United plays in the top division. Sunbury captain-coach Craig Ballinger said despite being a massive underdog, they were disappointed not to go further. “It wasn’t the result we were after,” he said. “I’m very proud of the boys with what they’ve achieved in their first year in the competition. We’re moving in the right direction. “The belief in the group, they don’t believe they were lucky to be there. We have more than the ability to challenge any side.” Ballinger said United had done a massive amount of work to get the ground up to standard, after it was under water earlier in the day after two days of rain. Sunbury was sent in and got off to the perfect

start to be 0-20. But when they lost their first wicket it started a collapse and the Roar couldn’t to put partnerships together. They finished 8-72 off their 20 overs. “It was never going to be enough,” Ballinger said. “They got the best out of the wicket and we didn’t adjust to it. Credit to them. “They were putting the ball in good areas.” Justin Nelson top scored with 19, with Stephen Treweek (12 runs) the only other player in double figures. Sunshine finished 2-73, making the runs with nearly four overs remaining. Ballinger said they made United work for the runs, with the innings going deep but they weren’t helped by a couple of missed chances in the field. Jason McGann got both wickets for Sunbury. Ballinger said the group would take belief in itself into the rest of the season. “There’s a great mix of guys in the T20 side,” he said. “Not just guys in the ones, but guys from the second and third XIs. Hopefully the whole club will use it going forward.”

Meanwhile, Sunbury’s division 5 match against Bellbridge ended in a draw on Saturday because of a washout. Ballinger said the washout was disappointing and now left them with a do or die match in the final round. Sunbury sits in second place with six points separating the top six teams. “To have only lost two matches and having to fight to play finals is a bit hard to believe,” Ballinger said. “We’ll turn up and do what we know we can do and we’re more than capable of giving it a shake.” In the women’s competition, Sunbury was knocked out by Westmeadows in the semi-finals. Facing an undefeated Westmeadows, it was always going to be a tough ask for the Roar. The Roar started well and were 0-23 before they crumbled to be all out for just 57. Extras contributed for 26 of those runs. The Warriors took their time and got the runs with three overs remaining. They finished 3-62 and will face Keilor in the grand final. Keilor won a bowl-off with St Andrews to earn its spot in the grand final.

Rain again played havoc in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup at the weekend. For a second straight match, there was limited play on day one of matches, with heavy rain falling on Friday and throughout Saturday. Bacchus Marsh was the big winner against Riddell, as just two matches got underway. The Bulls claimed first innings points and will have a good shot at an outright result. The Bulls bowled Riddell out for just 88, with Kasun Suriaratchie taking 6-23 – his best return for the season. The Bombers started well and were 0-36 before losing three wickets for no runs to slump to 3-36. They would continue to lose wickets throughout. Michael Day top scored with 31 at the top of the order for the Bombers. The Bulls were 2-94 when stumps were called. James Lidgett was unbeaten on 56. Just 26 overs were bowled at Arnolds Creek, between St Anthony’s and Diggers Rest Bulla. After winning the toss, the Saints were 2-56 when play was halted. Paul Scott was 17 not out, while Darren McCrae was 16 not out when the rain got too heavy. Raveen De Silva was the wicket taker for Diggers Rest Bulla. There was no play between Gisborne and Romsey and Sunbury United and Woodend. There was no play across the rest of the divisions and the Johnstone Shield. Tara Murray
