Australia Day comes alive Get ready to celebrate all things Australian this weekend in the Macedon Ranges and Hume. Macedon Ranges council will mark the day with an Australia Day awards and citizenship ceremony at the Kyneton Town Hall, 129 Mollison Street, on Sunday, January 26. Awards including citizen of the year, young citizen of the year, community achievement, arts ambassador and community event will be presented on the day. For those looking to dress up in their best, celebrate the long weekend with a day at the Australia Day Races on Monday, January 27 at Hanging Rock, 139 South Rock Road, Woodend from 11am. Cobaw Community Health chief executive Margaret McDonald said it was disappointing Macedon Ranges locals could not receive financial assistance close to home. “I acknowledge the two organisations that have responded to our request for clarity around how they intend to support people in the Macedon Ranges,” she said. “However we have great concerns that allocating the funds to large Melbourne-based organisations will disadvantage those members of our community in need of urgent financial help. “The re-allocation of funds has created confusion and frustration for clients and
community members. Driving an hour to Bendigo or Melbourne for a $50 petrol or food voucher makes no sense. “Rural health and wellbeing services need to be delivered locally or we will see poorer health outcomes for our community. “We know there is a need as we see evidence of it every day from people visiting our service and we want to be able to reassure them that assistance is still available.” Organisations funded to deliver Emergency Relief are Haven Home Safe, Catholic Care, Salvation Army, Uniting, Australian Multicultural Community Services, Sacred Heart Mission, Community Information and Support Victoria and Anglicare Victoria.

Access to financial assistance for people struggling to make ends meet is no longer being provided to Macedon Ranges residents. Federal government funding for emergency relief provided by Cobaw Community Health was stopped on December 31. Since 2004, Cobaw Community Health had previously been allocated $60,000 annually for distribution across the Macedon Ranges as part of the Department of Social Services Emergency Relief program. Clients were provided with food and petrol vouchers and received assistance with the payment of utility bills.
The service assisted more than 20 clients each week from one of Cobaw Community Health’s sites in Kyneton, Woodend or Romsey. The service also involved a health and wellbeing assessment for clients which often resulted in referrals to other services externally and within Cobaw Community Health including counselling, housing and family services, Centrelink, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and Legal Aid. From January 1, funding had been allocated to 10 different organisations, none of which were located in the Macedon Ranges. Cobaw staff have since been directing people enquiring about emergency relief to a number of alternative providers including local food

Litter app ready to clean up By Jessica Micallef Sunbury residents are being encouraged to lead the way in litter removal. Water authority Melbourne Water is trialling the use of the Litterati app as a way to gather data on litter hotspots and then target those areas for clean-up. App users can photograph rubbish and mention the most commonly found items using key words. Brightly coloured signs have been installed across Sunbury’s bike paths, footpaths and at the train station to encourage locals and

Melbourne Water education officer Jane Petch said the initaitve had the support of Hume council and several community groups have also been approached to help promote the message.
“Litterati is a simple concept,” she said. “If you see a piece of rubbish, don’t just ignore it. Take a picture, share it and then pick it up and throw it away or recycle it. “We know that 95 per cent of the litter washed up on our beaches comes from the suburban streets through the storm water system and we need to solve this problem at the source. “Melbourne Water spends more than $3 million a year cleaning litter from our waterways. “That’s essentially just under 1500 cubic metres of rubbish cleaned out of our rivers and creeks.
“Jacksons Creek, which winds its way downstream into the Maribyrnong River, is home to significant platypus population that the local Sunbury community is passionate about protecting. “This is another pressing reason to stop rubbish impacting their environment. “Platypus forage for food in the creek, which makes them vulnerable to being entangled and injured in litter like elastic bans or hair ties that can slip over their heads.” The Litterati App can be downloaded for free from the App Store or Google Play. Revved up for bushfire appeal in terms of social media. “We’ve got interest from people in the eastern suburbs like Dandenong, Mornington [and] Rosebud. We have cars coming from Swan Hill.” As well as monetary donations, Mr Radclyffe is asking show goers to donate toiletries, toys and manchester and non-perishable food. “Anything that is a necessity to the victims,” he said. “Any goods are going to be hand delivered to Bairnsdale by myself to then be distributed to towns like Orbost and Mallacoota.” There’ll be something for everyone at the
car show, including a jumping castle and face painting stations for children. Ice cream and coffee vans will also be provided. “At the end of the day, I can put my hand on my heart and say we contributed and did our part,” Mr Radclyffe said. “If everyone did a little bit, that’s awesome. Rev your engines for a good cause this weekend. Sunbury local Brad Radclyffe is calling on car lovers to bring their pride and joy to Langama Park on Sunday for a car show. Mr Radclyffe said all money raised from the event would go towards the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. “We have to do something to help these people,” he said. “I wanted to do more than just give a few dollars. “There’ll be anything from hot rods to modern cars. All vehicles are welcome – cars, bikes, we have trucks coming in as well. “It should be a really good event. It’s growing
Macedon Ranges motorists can look forward to safer roads. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said work is underway to build two roundabouts, new road safety barriers and implement an overtaking lane between Romsey and Monegeetta. A roundabout will be built at Barry and Main streets to improve safety and traffic flow at the busy intersection in Romsey. Construction of roundabout at Melbourne-Lancefield Road and Gisborne-Kilmore Road in Monegeetta is also underway. A northbound overtaking lane and new safety barriers are also being added to Melbourne-Lancefield Road. The barriers will be installed centerline and on the roadside in high risk locations. Ms Thomas said the upgrades would go a long way in improving road safety. “We’ve listened to the community and we are making sure these high-risk intersections are much safer by building two new roundabouts – which are proven to drastically reduce the risk of crashes,” she said. “We’re also installing new barriers and an overtaking lane on MelbourneLancefield Road to help give drivers a safer journey on this key route.” The Barry Street roundabout is expected to be completed by June, while works on Melbourne-Lancefield Road are expected be completed mid to late 2020. Mamas make music Kaitlyn Secker is looking forward to performing on home soil. The musician, originally from Woodend, is a singer from Melbourne based band The Mamas. Ms Secker, 23, said the band formed three years after their members met each other at Monash University. “We were all studying music … and had the same classes,” she said. “We became great friends and we all decided to form a band. We had a long discussion, talking about issues we were facing as female musicians. “We started writing song on those serious issues including feminism and equality.” The Mamas will be touring Victoria as part

of their Dancefloor Tour from February 9. The band will a make a special appearance at a place close to Ms Secker’s heart. “We have a whole new show that we have put together,” she said. “We are bringing it [the show] to Melbourne, then we are going to Geelong, Ballarat, Macedon, Canberra, Sydney, Newcastle [and] San Remo. “It’s more of a regional tour. The Woodend girls are ballkids at this year’s Australian Open and 14-year-old Maisy said 2020 marked her second year as a ballkid. “My sister was a ballkid in 2018. I tried out then but I didn’t make it, so I thought I would try again because she said it was a really good experience,” she said. “I’m looking forward to being close to the players and getting used to catching the train. And you get to meet new friends which is pretty cool.”

Although the girls don’t know which players they will work alongside with, both Bronte, 12, and Maisy have hopes to be get close to Australian player Ash Barty. “She’s a great role model and great tennis player,” Bronte said. Maisy said: “She’s gone from down here to up here really quickly.” Bronte is a first time ballkid this year and is thrilled about being close to the action. “I just wanted to get close to the players and it’s a great way to make new friends,” she said. Both girls play tennis at the Woodend Tennis Club and are excited about pursing their journeys together. “I encourage everyone to become a ballkid because it’s a really good experience,” Maisy said. Macedon Ranges students who are about to embark on a university degree are encouraged to apply for a 2020 Gisborne and District Community Bank Branch university scholarship. Valued at $5000 for up to three years, the scholarship aims to support local youth who face challenges that could hinder their success at obtaining a degree. New Gisborne resident Nash Kemp received one of three scholarships in 2019. “The Gisborne and District Community Bank scholarship allowed me to attend events in Bendigo,” he said. “It allowed me to form strong social connections from being present in classes more often, alongside being able to acquire further qualifications for my course and further study opportunities. “These combined assisted me in passing exams and ultimately future job opportunities, which is fantastic.” Gisborne Bendigo Bank Community Bank branch manager Sarah Burton said she was proud to support local students during their tertiary studies. “Starting university is a major achievement but can also be very challenging – financially, logistically or otherwise,” she said. “We offer scholarships to help make that step a bit easier for the recipient.” Applications for the scholarships close on Tuesday, January 28. Pot plants to fire fund By Jessica Micallef A family camping trip has encouraged three children to plant a seed of hope for those in despair. Gisborne children Ruby, 10, Holland, 7, and Lawson, 4, spent a few days during their school holidays selling pot plants outside their home in a bid to raise money for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. Mum Kallee Ruscoe said her family was camping in Wangaratta earlier this month when residents and visitors from nearby bushfire-affected towns were being evacuated to Wangaratta. “My children got to see first-hand what was happening in regards to people evacuating and having to bring their stuff,” she said. “My youngest Lawson, who is four, ended up in hospital with breathing problems because of the smoke.” When the family returned home to Gisborne, the children decided to set up a roadside shop outside their home, selling pot plants from their own garden. “They set up a shop last Wednesday [January 8] and they were out there Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, in the heat,” Ms Ruscoe said. “We’re on a few acres and we’ve got some daisies so they’ve been digging them out of the garden and they were watering them and looking after them. “I was very proud of them. They were waving at every car to try and stop them. They raised $250 in three days. “Some people donated a few dollars because they didn’t want a plant. We sold about 50 plants.” Ms Ruscoe said her children’s fundraising efforts had encouraged their friends to follow in their footsteps.

“A lot of their friends saw it on Facebook and were aware of what was happening. One of their friends sold cookies and raised about $90, so I think it spurred some of the friends to do a
few similar things,” she said. “We’re just really proud of them. If it encourages people to donate or themselves raise some funds then that’s really good.”
Axle the Staffordshire terrier is lending a helping paw to fellow furry friends. The Sunbury icon and his owner Belinda Shipp set up a GoFundMe page earlier this month to raise much needed funds for wildlife affected by the Victorian bushfires. Miss Shipp said her love for animals inspired her to do her bit. “I have a soft spot for animals and pretty much everything I do is always relating to animals, whether it’s helping them or whether it’s getting the message to adopt and not to shop,” she said. “It’s going to be a long process in treatment. They need the funds. Recovery is going to be a long time and we need to think about relocating the animals.” Ms Shipp used Axle’s social media to spread the awareness about the need to donate to wildlife charities and organisations. The duo has since raised more than $7500. Ms Shipp said the money would be equally distributed among four animal rescue organisations. Jessica Micallef

MY PLACE Romsey’s Ryan Watts is an avid supporter of the Melbourne Football Club and is passionate about working with local youth. He spoke with Jessica Micallef.
I have lived in Sunbury most of my life and now reside in Romsey. I work in Sunbury at Ranbuild and am a venturer scout leader at 1st Riddells Creek Scout Group. What are you passionate about? I love spending time with family and friends, whether that be watching AFL – I’m an unwavering supporter of the Melbourne Football Club and as a member, I get to go to all home games with my fiance Jessica. I also am fond of good wine which is fortunate as the Macedon Ranges is an emerging wine hot spot. I also care deeply about my work with the scouting movement, and find working with youth is so rewarding. How long have you been a part of the team at Ranbuild in Sunbury? I started in May 2018, firstly out of our Kilmore location and now in our brand new showroom in Sunbury. What is your role?
I am a project sales consultant. I consult with our clients assisting them navigate their purchase of a shed, giving a professional insight into the building industry. What are some of your favourite local spots to eat at? For breakfast, I enjoy Krash & Co. For lunch or dinner, it has to be Roquette however a new favourite for a quick bite or drink is the outdoor space at Club Sunbury. What would people be most surprised to know about you? I was born in the UK, however have spent most of my time in Australia. If you could change one thing about the area, what would it be? In Sunbury, I would say that it’s time for action on a new railway station with ample parking to free up the town. At home in Romsey, I would like to see the main street be revitalised with new businesses as many of the building are left closed. I would also like a secondary school in Romsey to be opened to cater for the future.

Comeback falls short

By Tara Murray A late Kyneton Tigers comeback fell short against the Castlemaine Cannons in the Country Basketball League north-west competition on the weekend. The final margin was just three points, but for much of the game the Tigers didn’t look likely to win. They trailed by as much as 27 points just before half time, before working back into the game. Ultimately they would fall short, losing 67-64. Tigers coach Ash Clarke said it was a disappointing result. “It was a little bit too late,” he said. “We let them get too far away from us. Another minute we would have had them.” Clarke said they upped the pace after half time and backed in the shooters as they looked to get back into the game. “We never gave up,” he said. “Iggy [Spiller] he led the way along with Louis [Bongiovanni] and Tom Scott,” he said. “Matt Paterson stepped up in the second half.” The loss sums up the Tigers season which held a lot of promise, but has seen them miss finals again. They sit seventh with four wins with one match remaining. Clarke said overall it had been a disappointing season, with the side hoping to make finals for the first time. “We had too many games without our full roster and it hurt. When it’s that close if you don’t have your full roster you are going to feel it.” Clarke said there had been some positive signs going forward especially with a couple of

their younger players. Josh Greetham, who is still playing under-18s, has stepped up, as has Paterson, who is one to watch going forward. Clarke said the inclusion of Spiller had been a great one. The Tigers finish their season on Saturday night at home against finals bound Maryborough Blazers.
It will be part of a double header with the women’s side. The women’s side’s finals fate is on the line, with them needing a win and hoping the result of a postponed match goes their way. The Tigers, who sit bottom in the north-west competition, face third placed Maryborough Blazers.

The Highlanders finished third in their conference with two wins, as much of the tournament was affected by smoke. All teams had at least two draws, with the Highlanders one of those teams to have three draws. The Highlanders lost their two opening day matches to the Waves and the Falcons, before there was no play on day two. The Highlanders match on Wednesday against the Spirit also didn’t go ahead. The side would finish the tournament on a high, with two wins on the final day. First up they beat the Mallee. The Highlanders restricted the Mallee to 5-83, before quickly making the runs, finishing 1-84. Bacchus Marsh’s Mace Cousins finished 37 not out. Later that day, the Highlanders beat the Rivers. It was a good bowling performance by the Highlanders, bowling the Mallee out for just 66. The bowlers shared the wickets around, with four players getting two wickets each. The Highlanders needed just over half their overs to get the runs, finishing 1-67. Former Rupertswood star Emerson White top scored with 36 at the top of the order. Sunbury has finally come away with the points against Sanctuary Lakes in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 5 Russell Pollock Shield competition. Just one wicket away from victory before rain fell last time the two teams met before Christmas in a two-dayer, Sunbury was determined to get the points against the bottom side on Saturday. It was a strong Sunbury performance that got the job done, with the players getting an early ending with the result going their way. Roar captain-coach Craig Ballinger said they had one eye on the weather on Saturday and making sure they didn’t lose out again. “It was good to finish the job from a couple of weeks ago,” he said. “We wanted to bowl first as we knew about the smoke problems. We wanted to get the game over with before they could call it off. “We were confident enough that we could
bowl them out cheaply. It might have been a bit cocky, but it paid off.” The Roar needed just 30 overs as they bowled them out for 72. Ballinger said while they were happy with that, the score could have been even lower. “One bloke got away from us, but we stuck to the process and it only cost us about 20 runs,” he said. “He went outside what we had prepared for, it was really unconventional. There wasn’t many cricket shots.” Jason McGann took four wickets and he now has 32 for the season, eight more than anyone else in division 5. Jay King also took four wickets, his best return of the season. The Roar had little trouble getting the runs, finishing 2-74 in the 20th over. Justin Nelson finished unbeaten on 36. The win and other results moves the Roar to
second on the table. Just six points separates the top six sides, with a loss possibly meaning falling outside the top four. Ballinger said their destiny and where they finish is in their own hands. The Roar finish the season with three two-day matches, with the skipper saying this was their preferred format with the opportunity for the bowlers to really dig in. “A few sides take on Sanctuary Lakes and while they’re good blokes, it’s a good opportunity for points boosters for the teams around us,” he said. “We’ve got to keep doing what we are doing. You really have to keep winning, with so many sides fighting for finals.” Sunbury kicks off its T20 finals campaign on Tuesday night against West Coburg, in the first match of their round robin quarter final. NAB League A grand final rematch will kick off the NAB League girls season on February 29. The Calder Cannons will be hoping to get one back against the Northern Knights when they take on each other at RMIT in Bundoora. The Cannons play their first home match the following week against Dandenong. The Cannons boys team will kick off their season on March 22 against the Western Jets at Mars Stadium.

United pile on the runs By Tara Murray Sunbury United piled on the runs on the weekend in a vital game in the race for finals in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. Facing another finals hopeful, Romsey, a win this week would put a gap between the sides with three rounds remaining. United finished day one in a good spot, having made 9-317. United coach Archie Dudderidge said it was a really good day for the group. “We got put in by the opposition who won the toss,” he said. “We were 0-100 or close to, before we lost two quick wickets for nothing just about. “We had another good partnership then lost two quick wickets again. “We shared the runs around and ended up putting on 9-317, which is a good day.” Opener Dilan Chandima was the standout making 175, his second century of the season. Chandima was the second last man out, just before they passed 300.
Despite the good day with the bat, Dudderidge knows the game is anything but over. “It’s 50-50 at the moment,” he said. “They have some good players who can make the runs. We’ll see what happens. “It’s good to have 300 on the board and they have to get them. It might come down to whether we can hold our catches.” For third placed United, a win here would help them go one step further to securing a finals berth. Dudderidge said they were happy with the position they are in at this point of the season. “We are a game ahead of them and a win puts us two games ahead of them with three games left. “It’s a huge game for our club and hopefully set us up with a 90 per cent chance of making finals.” This is one of two tough games for United in the run home. They face a red hot Bacchus Marsh next round. The first match between those two sides was washed out. Bacchus Marsh is on track for an outright

victory against St Anthony’s. St Anthony’s was bowled out for 101, with Ian Spiteri taking 4-20. The Bulls were 1-123 when they declared. St Anthony’s was 1-34 at stumps in its second innings. Gisborne is also on track for victory against Riddell. The Bombers were bowled out for 113 with skipper Heath Wadden top scoring with 53. Josh McDonald took three wickets for the Dragons. The Dragons were 4-57 at stumps. Mick Allen will resume at 15 not out, along with Sam Mackay, who is yet to score. Wadden has three wickets for the Bombers. Diggers Rest Bulla is also on track for victory against Woodend. Woodend was bowled out for just 132. There were plenty of starts for the Hawks, but no one could go on with it with Josh Eastley and Adam Johnstone top scoring with 27. Lindon Dowsett took four wickets. The Burras will resume at 3-80 after facing 17 overs.
A strong field took to the greens for the Romsey Golf Club’s Texas Ambrose guest day on Saturday. Texas Ambrose, also known as Gentsomes, allows teams to take the best drive then each player plays their ball into the cup and the team takes the best two stableford scores. It was a day for birdies, with many good scores recorded. The team of Pat Chisholm, Mick Nicholls Jnr and Dave Keeney won by one point from Dean van Dev Heuval, Steve Wilkins and Mitch Atlas. Wednesday’s competition was cancelled due to smokey conditions.
GDCA Bendigo Country week gets underway for the Gisborne and District Cricket Association on Monday. The GDCA will again play in the division 1 competition, facing Emu Valley, Grassmore, Wangaratta and District, Murray Valley and Goulburn Murray teams.

Gisborne makes it through to regional T20 final Gisborne is through to the Central Highlands Region’s T20 division 1 grand final after a big hitting win against St Andrews on Sunday. The Dragons took on St Andrews on Sunday to try and win a spot in next weekend’s Cricket Willow grand final. The Dragons set the game up early after winning the toss and electing to bat. While they would lose the wicket of Riley Vernon for not much, it would matter little as they went on to make 3-205 from their 20 overs. Dragons skipper Jarryd Vernon and opener Mick Allen did most of the damage, putting on 85 for the second wicket. Vernon said it was a really good day with the bat. “I’m always a fan of batting first in the T20 format,” he said. “We put on a good partnership and it’s always good to bat with Mick, with his experience. “He keeps me going and he hasn’t lost anything at all. Having him at the top of the order, it sets the tone for the day.”
Vernon finished 89 not out off 47 balls with 12 fours and two sixes. Allen made 73 off 51 balls with seven fours and four sixes. The Dragons restricted St Andrews to 4-147. Having secured the win, Vernon was more than happy with the performance. “We had a lot of young kids in, who did a good job, which is pleasing to see. “To restrict them to 147 was a really good performance.” The Dragons now play Muckleford in the grand final on Monday at Cricket Willow. It’s the second time the Dragons have made the final, with a win in 2015. The winner of the final also represents the region in the Cricket Victoria Regional Big Bash finals. Vernon said they were hoping to get another win. “The boys are looking forward to it,” he said. “We won it last time and went pretty deep in the competition [regional big bash] and made the semi finals. “Hopefully we can do the same thing again.
It’s good for the boys with the extra day of cricket and a chance to bond.” This year there will be a women’s Cricket Willow title, with Sunbury to face Ballarat Women’s. Before the final, the Dragons will be looking to wrap up the points against Riddell in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup. The Dragons bowled the Bombers out for 113 with Josh McDonald taking 3-19 off his 12 overs. It wasn’t the ideal start for the Dragons with the bat, finishing day one at 4-57. Vernon said it was a good performance with the ball, but not where they wanted to be with the bat. “We would have liked to not be four wickets down,” said Vernon. “It is what it is and we’ve still got Mick in. The guys still have job to do. “We would like to keep it going.” Jarryd Vernon was on song on Sunday.

Full steam ahead for Burras
By Tara Murray Rupertswood’s focus on developing its youth is starting to show off in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association competition. Rupo has made a big focus of blooding their young players with at least two under-17s playing in each of their top two sides each week. That has flowed down into their other two sides, with a number of youngsters stepping onto the field each week. Rupo senior coach Andrew Pizaro said they were achieving everything they had set out to do at the start of the season. He said the long term focus of the club was the priority with the hard work starting to show through. He pointed out the achievements of 12-year-old Hayden Wright on the weekend as a case of that. Wright took 6-8, including being on a hat trick, off five overs in the fourth XI. Pizaro said all the players getting opportunities had earned their opportunities. “Where we are going as a club in regards to what direction we’re going, was on show yesterday,” he said. “The success we had with the juniors and the young kids coming through, I’m confident they will do a job and things are going well at the moment. “Where we end up finals-wise, isn’t a great concern at the moment.” Rupo’s first XI is right in the mix for a finals berth in the Johnstone Shield, with nothing separating the top six sides. Rupertswood currently sits outside the top four, but a win this week would see them move back in. “We won outright against Macedon before Christmas and went to the top and then were out of the four the following week when we lost,” Pizaro said. “We win this week and a couple of others play each other, we would be second. It’s pretty cut throat and whoever makes finals deserves to and if you miss out it’s unlucky.” Rupo is halfway through their match with top four side Gisborne. The Dragons made 8-211 from their overs. Pizaro took three wickets for Rupo. The skipper said it was a really good contest between the two sides. “The outfield is ridiculously slow, so it’s a good score,” he said. “I feel we can score 250 plus. Not on our hitting power, but the running between the wickets is pretty good. “We can take that advantage and not do anything silly. It’s less than three runs an over. In other matches, East Sunbury has the slight edge over the Sunbury Kangaroos. The Kangaroos were bowled out for 105 with Hammad Rashid taking 5-15 off 14 overs.

The Thunder lost two early wickets and will resume at 2-28, with playing coach Liam Sherlock 14 not out. It was another tough day for Macedon, as it conceded 7-408 to Wallan.

Diggers Rest women’s football coach Trent Hedges is excited by the prospect of the club fielding a women’s side for the first time. Having coached the Burras’ youth league girls side the last two years, Hedges will combine roles this season, coaching both the girl’s and women’s team. Hodges said he had always wanted to get involved when the senior club set up a women’s side, but didn’t expect it to happen so soon. “A few of the senior under 18s players were worried about what to do after juniors,” Hedges said. “[President] Ben Morse and I had a talk and I couldn’t say no to the role. I had a duty of care to help them out and go up with them. “It will help bridge the gap between the seniors and juniors, with a few of the junior girls likely to be training with us at the end of the year.” The Burras had their first training session last week with a come and try session. Hedges said they had about 13 or 14 people confirmed to play after the come and try session and more had been in touch since. He said now that they had the ball rolling and started training, that more people would look to get involved. Hedges is hoping to get together a squad of about 25 players and were encouraging anyone who wants to play to come down. The Burras have landed a major recruit in Simone Craige. Craige spent last season on Carlton’s VFLW list, having played with both the Sunbury Kangaroos and Sunbury Lions. Hedges said Craige was the first player he called when he got the job. “I grew up with her brother, so I’ve known her since I was eight,” he said. “She played juniors at Diggers Rest. I’m rapt to have her on board.” The side will play in the Essendon District Football League women’s competition. Hedges said they were unsure what division they will play in.
