Brave brothers honoured By Jessica Micallef Baynton brothers who saved a man from a burning car have been presented with a bravery award for their efforts. Daniel White and his brother Nick received The Royal Human Society of Australasia bronze bravery award for their courageous act. In March last year, the brothers were driving on the Burke and Wills Track in Baynton when they came across a smokey engine. “We looked to the other side of the road and there was a smashed-up car,� Daniel said. “We noticed there was a guy in there so we

It was more trying to get him out of harm’s way. The car was crackling and it was getting pretty hot and smokey. “It was lucky we were both there because it took a bit of energy to get him out of the car. “Once we were on the other side of the road, the CFA, police and ambulance got there.â€?
The rescued man was airlifted to hospital with severe burns to his legs, bruises, and an injured shoulder. “He survived and he’s out of hospital,� Daniel said. “It’s really lucky that he survived.� The brothers were presented with a bravery award at a ceremony at Government House last week. Daniel said it was a nice gesture to be recognised for their efforts. “We didn’t expect it. We were just trying to get him out of the car,� he said. “It’s a nice little thing. If someone’s in trouble I think it’s always important to help.�

pulled over. We were trying to get him out and his leg started to catch fire. We had to pull him through the seatbelt and out through the driver’s side of the window.� Once the man was out of the car, the fire started spreading quickly and Daniel and his brother had to move fast before calling triple-0. “We had to take off his pants and shoes because they were on fire,� Daniel said. “He wasn’t really conscious. He had a really smashed up shoulder and it was quite floppy. As the car caught fire, the surrounding bush and grass did too. We had to keep moving him away.

Police begin major road blitz By Jessica Micallef Sunbury and Macedon Ranges motorists are being urged to stay alert and safe on the road during the festive season. Police will be out in full force during the Christmas and new year period as part of the statewide 24-day Operation Roadwise campaign. Macedon Ranges Police Inspector Chris Large said there would be a higher police presence on Victorian roads, including drug and alcohol buses.
“The aim of the operation is to reduce incidents and road trauma during the Christmas and new year period,” he said. “We will be targeting speed, drink and drug driving, driver distraction, fatigue issues and seatbelt offences which is a particular issue for the Macedon Ranges. It is something that we have become aware of. “It’s the busiest time of the year on Victorian roads. We will have additional police resources right across the state and we will be having, in the Macedon Ranges, police vehicles on the road right across the operation.

“There will be some visible locations and some not visible. That’s the whole point of the operation – to make sure there are police visible in the community and that people are keeping safe this year.” Inspector Large said drivers should think of their loved ones before getting behind the
wheel. “2019 has been a really challenging period for us,” he said. “This year there has been more road fatalities. Many families are facing Christmas without loved ones. “We will be out there keeping people safe on the roads so my message is stay safe, stay alert, stay sober and stick within the driving conditions.” So far more than 250 lives have been lost on Victorian roads this year, up from 199 in 2018. Operation Roadwise started on Friday, December 13 and will finish on Sunday, January 5.

The Macedon Ranges has a new and expanded bus depot. Public Transport Minister Melissa Horne joined Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas last week to officially open Dyson’s bus depot in Kyneton. The new depot will help Dyson’s deliver new and improved bus services. The services link communities in and around the Macedon Ranges including Kyneton, Trentham, Romsey, Lancefield, Sunbury and Gisborne. In April, Kyneton’s bus services were expanded from three days to six days a week with extended hours of operation. A new bus service between Kyneton and Trentham was also implemented. Ms Horne welcomed the new depot. “We’ve made huge changes to bus services in and around the Macedon Ranges this year which is giving locals more ways to get where they need to go,” she said. “More bus services across more days and with better connections to train and local destinations is making travel simpler for passengers.” Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the bus depot will also provide more jobs in the area. “Public transport has been employing locals in our region for decades so it’s exciting to see Dyson’s opening a new and expanded depot in Kyneton to help deliver the extra bus services,” she said. “The extra bus services we’ve introduced have opened new opportunities for our community by getting people where they need to go.” Jessica Micallef

Tributes flow for trail-blazer By Jessica Micallef Tributes are flowing for Barker Trailer identity and co-founder Ernie Barker, who died last month. Ernie, 74, grew up in Woodend and at the age of 17 began an apprenticeship as a fitter and turner with Loadmaster Trailers in Woodend where he found his love for trailers and axles. Together with his brother Arthur Barker, (dec 2006) the pair founded trailer dealer Barker Trailers in 1974 with the support of family shareholders.
Since the early 1970s, Ernie and Arthur’s business has become an award-winning industry icon. The company has spanned 45 years, has three generations of family in business, sold 11,000 semi-trailers and has more than 1200 employees across its Woodend and Maryborough sites. The “little business” has been recognised along the way at the state government’s Hall of Fame Awards, Australia Freight Industry Awards and more recently was winner of the Business of the Year, Excellence in Trade,
Construction and Manufacturing and Apprentice of the Year awards at Macedon Ranges Business Excellence Awards. The company celebrated its 10,000th trailer sale last year with a visit from Premier Daniel Andrews at the Woodend site. Outside of Barker Trailers, Ernie was heavily involved in the community, especially with the Woodend-Hesket Football Club, where he played a role in the construction of the social rooms. Ernie died peacefully surrounded by family at RM Begg – Kyneton Aged Care on November 26.

A galaxy not so far away You can play in a galaxy not so far away at Sunbury’s Galaxyland Playspace. The playground was officially reopened last Monday after nearly six months of upgrades. Earlier this year, pupils from local primary schools were asked to re-imagine the playground and draw the equipment they would like to see in the redeveloped space. Hume mayor Carly Moore said the pupils’ designs played an important role in redesigning the area. “This playspace has been a very popular spot for families across the region for almost 20 years and we know that the community has been eagerly anticipating the reopening of the newly redeveloped playspace,” she said. “The playspace was redesigned from the ideas of the community, including some very talented and creative students from Sunbury Primary School and Sunbury Macedon Ranges Specialist School.
“When asked, the students drew imaginative and colourful pictures to show us their ideas for the playspace and what new equipment they wanted to see. “The new equipment now includes a flying fox – a very popular suggestion from the participating students, a mega swing, climbing towers, basket swing, in ground trampolines and the addition of a new sensory area.” The project was jointly funded by the council and the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund, each contributing $500,000. “The range of new play equipment, the updated picnic facilities and landscaping make Galaxyland the perfect place to visit,” Cr Moore said. Western Water customers are being encouraged to use water wisely after water consumption increased by more than 7 per cent in the past year. The 7.2 per cent increase has been reported in Western Water’s Annual Water Outlook for 2018-19. Outdoor fun for kids Children at Woodend Kindergarten will soon have a new outdoor learning space to enjoy. Construction on the outdoor area started earlier this month and will include a nature-based play space and sensory garden. The area can also be used by the community for family meeting spaces. The kindergarten received $198,000 through the state government’s Pick My Project initiative and $152,000 from the Children’s Facilities Capital Program. The kindergarten, in partnership with Macedon Ranges council and consultation with the community, first prepared a Landscape Masterplan for the outdoor learning area in 2017. The plan identified projects to create

more functional spaces while providing opportunities for inclusive nature play. The kindergarten is also set to receive $6183 as part of the state government’s Inclusive Kindergarten Funding Program to purchase sensory equipment. Macedon Ranges council will also provide funds to upgrade the kindergarten’s underground drainage to help prevent flooding. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said: “This new outdoor space was a high priority for our community and that’s why I’m so delighted that it secured funding through Pick My Project. “Our kinder kids will now have a brilliant space to play and learn.”

Christmas wonderland By Jessica Micallef Sunbury has its very own Christmas wonderland. Resident Kylie Crowley has decked her backyard with Christmas decorations and lights galore for visitors to venture through what she calls ‘Christmas on Reservoir’. “I thought of wanting to do a Santa’s house out the back ‌ it eventuated from there,â€? Ms Crowley said. “Once we started we couldn’t stop.â€? Ms Crowley has set up various stations along the side and back of her house to reflect Christmas traditions and themes.
“When you walk down the side of the house, that is the Grinchmas area,â€? she said. “Then you go into the Aussie Christmas area. We have a Disney window set up ‌ then you go up to the back with all the inflatables and a Santa where you can stick your head through for photos. “We have a gingerbread area, a woodlands area, Santa’s house and a winter wonderland.â€? A self-confessed Christmas enthusiast, Ms Crowley has spent every weekend since August decking the halls and is already looking forward to decorating her house next year. Christmas on Reservoir has been opened
since the end of last month and Ms Crowley said residents are already flocking to view her extravagant set-up. “I have a Facebook page called Christmas on Reservoir. We are up to 350 followers and we only started last month,� she said. “Everyone loves it and are thankful that we are doing it. The adults are loving it more than the kids.� Christmas on Reservoir can be visited every Friday and Saturday night in the lead-up to Christmas. It’s at 206 Reservoir Road, Sunbury. “We just want people to come and enjoy it,� Ms Crowley said.
Lancefield has been decked with all things Christmas thanks to the Lancefield Neighbourhood House. House co-ordinator Vivien Philpotts said house members, primary school pupils and locals have been preparing and creating recycled Christmas decorations to ring in the festive season. “Children from primary schools have made a decorated stocking, and that was all put together in a long string and it was put underneath verandahs,� she said. “At the main street, at the end of the road, they’ve got polystyrene boxes from the fruit shop and wrapped them in Christmas tablecloths.� Ms Philpotts said all the decorations were handmade from recycled items. “There has been a team of six [Neighbourhood House volunteers] that have been spending two to three afternoons a week for the last six months to make the decorations. If you gave them something, they would turn it into a Christmas decoration.� Jessica Micallef

Property data at your fingertips By Ewen McRae A new partnership is set to make the home buying experience easier. Property data leader CoreLogic has combined with realestateview.com.au to provide a state-of-the-art price estimator, giving property owners and property seekers instant price value ranges for properties across the state. Every address searched has a range of property data and demographic information relevant to the suburb where it is located.
Toby Balazs, chief executive of realestateview. com.au, said nearly every home buyer used a price estimator in their search, and combining with CoreLogic gave searchers the trust they needed. “We believe that we will have the most accurate property data that can be accessed by home buyers,” Mr Balazs said. “The breadth and depth of property data that CoreLogic brings to us right across the country is amazing, and they’ve got a very strong name in the property industry. We believe by us partnering with them we can provide our
property-seeking audience with more data, accurate data, and give them confidence when they’re performing a property search.” Launching last week, the price estimator will provide home buyers and sellers with an Automated Valuation Model on any property they search through the portal. Mr Balazs said it would be particularly useful as the market goes through a period of fluctuation, with prices in general rising after a previous downturn in the market. “I think it’s an important tool in any market,” he said.
“Australians, as we know, are property obsessed, so there’s no shortage of interest in property. “Whether it be an up-swing or a down-swing in the market, it’s always important to know where the value sits, but in what has been a tough market in 2019 it’s always important to understand what those property price indicators are at an individual level, and then get it verified by one of our agent partners. “For buyers, sellers and vendors, to know what to expect if you take a property to market is very important.”
Cheese the top choice A Thomastown cheese company has been named as the northern suburbs’ top business. That’s Amore Cheese won the Business of the Year award at the annual North Link Northern Business Achievement Awards. MY PLACE Axle the Staffordshire terrier is a well-known Sunbury local. With his owner Belinda Shipp, the pair are trying to combat the stigma that is often associated with the staffy breed. Belinda spoke with Jessica Micallef.
I’ve been a resident of Sunbury for 19 years after moving from Tylden. Sunbury gave me that country feel I was leaving. What are you passionate about? My passion is doing everything I can to change people’s minds about the staff y breed. Your dog Axle is well known in Sunbury – how long has he been a part of your family? Axle has been part of our family since a pup. He just turned nine-years-old. A recent dog attack in Pakenham involving a staff y and a dachshund received a lot of media attention. How did you react to this? The staff y was on a lead and harness and they were minding their own business. It was extremely important to save the staff y from being put to sleep as it wasn’t the instigator of this unfortunate incident. We started a Save Hero Facebook Page and received over 4000 messages of love and support from people all over the world. This also helped with the positive outcome and Hero the staff y was saved. Do you think there is a stigma associated with staffies? Absolutely. Staffies are extremely misunderstood and I’m embarrassed to say this, but I was also one of those people who
thought negatively about the breed. I feel very bad to have thought the way I did, all because of what I read, heard and saw on TV. I’ve learnt that until you own a staff y or any breed, we should not judge them. By owning a staff y, I’ve experienced nothing but unconditional love, intelligence and so much fun and laughter with Axle. I couldn’t imagine not having him in my life. How do you try and combat the stigma? Axle is an ambassador for the staff y breed and this has put us on a journey together to show nothing but positivity to everyone about his breed. This is done by doing TV appearances and live events. What are some of yours and Axle’s favourite local spots? Our favourite local spot is PETstock in Sunbury. The staff treat him like family and he’s a regular visitor every week. We also love going to Kepala Pet Resort in Diggers Rest. Axle swims for 30 minutes every Monday morning for fitness and preventative arthritis. What would people be most surprised to know about you? People are very surprised when they hear that I am Axle’s mum. He’s such a loved staff y and I find it very special knowing how much they actually love him and follow his day-to-day antics on Facebook or Instagram. Secondly, people are surprised when they find out I make metal art and really cool fire pits.

Pursuant to sections 25 and 26(2) of the Domestic Animals Act 1994, the Macedon Ranges Shire Council, at its Ordinary Council Meeting held on Wednesday 27 November 2019, resolved to make the Council Dog and Cat Order 2019 - Domestic Animals Act 1994 (incorporating Schedules 1 and 2). The Order operates from 1 January 2020, except for clause 4 and clause 8(3) related to cat conďŹ nement, which will come into operation on 1 July 2020. Thunder lock in experience By Tara Murray East Sunbury has looked to add more experience to its list for next year’s Essendon District Football League division 2 season. After a grand final appearance last year, the Thunder had a number of changes to their playing list which resulted in a slow start this year. Despite settling down in the back half of the season they missed out on finals. Coach Glenn Hopkins said they were hoping to continue that late momentum into next year. “We lost a lot of players and we didn’t have the same playing group as the year before,” he said of this season’s start. “We got some experience back into the side late in the year and it got us going again.” Hopkins said training, which finished up for the year last week, had attracted good numbers. He said they focused on bringing in players to fill particular roles and they thought they had recruited quite well for next year. Diggers Rest duo Tom Evans and Ryan Peters have come across. Neither played many senior games this year, but Hopkins said they expected them to play a big role for the Thunder. “We consider them good blokes and good footballers and we need some experience,” he said. “They have not missed a night of training and we know that they can be good senior footballers.” Jake Cronin, who has come across from Greenvale, is a tall forward option, while Joel Butler will give the Thunder another inside midfielder.
Jack Burnell, who played in the Thunder’s finals series in 2018, returns to the club after spending this year at Rupertswood Hopkins said they had also brought in a couple of other players they think can play senior football. “We’ve recruited some players that are really good for the club and the footy side of things.” The majority of the Thunder’s playing list from this year has also returned. “Besides Tom Cree, the full list from this year, everyone has re-signed,” Hopkins said. “To get them all back on board gives us a bit of consistency on the playing list, while topping up with good players.” Cree has headed to the Sunbury Lions to test himself at a higher level in the Ballarat Football League. He has been one of the Thunder’s best players in recent years. Hopkins said they had worked with Cree to make him a more consistent player and wished him luck at the Lions. “He is always welcome at our club.” The added depth to the Thunder’s list is important for the club as it strengthens its reserves side. The club is also hoping to get an under-19s team back up and running after failing to get the number to field a team this year. Hopkins said any players who wanted to come down and play were welcome. The Thunder kick off their season on April 4 at home against the Northern Saints. Tom Evans has joined East Sunbury. (Shawn Smits) 202490_01

SPORT Big boost for Sunbury Jets with Sanders set to return Sunbury Jets’ move into the Big V state championship men’s division has received a massive boost. The Jets, who claimed the division 1 title this year, last week announced that league and grand final most valuable player Ish Sanders would return. The American, who is in his second stint with the Jets, dominated this year, averaging nearly 27 points a game. Jets coach Ryan Addison said it was massive to get Sanders back on board. “It’s great news, isn’t it?”Addison said. “Last year was my first year with him and he’s just an amazing player. He is a high character person and good to have around the club. “Especially with the move up into champ, it gives us some consistency.” Addison said he and Sanders were both confident that he could step up to a higher division and have a big impact. He said in a couple of practice games last
season, Sanders held his own against some top guards. Having Sanders back ensures the Jets have some experience in what is otherwise a young list. New Zealander Joel Jeffrey isn’t returning, while Kris Blicavs has a new job in Geelong, which means he won’t be back either. Addison said the impact that Blicavs had in a short period of time at his junior club was massive. “His leadership helped us get where we are,” he said. “Those guys learned from him and it makes a difference to them as players and leaders.” Addison said Arthur Trousdell was unsure what his plans were. While they’ve lost some experience, the Jets have retained their core group of young players. Addison said that remained a focus of the program. “The likes of Nathan Marshall, Nathan Baker, Ben Jones and Corey Bellman are returning,”
he said. “It’s something Sunbury wanted us to focus on and have some good locals there. It’s good for the long term development.” Addison said Marshall was one who was really standing out in pre-season and was looking forward to taking on extra responsibility. The Jets are yet to finalise their roster. Addison said the main aim was signing a second import. He said they were hopefully close to announcing someone in the next couple of weeks. Addison said it was an exciting time for the club with the men’s side joining the women’s team next year. “It’s looking like a good roster,” he said. “We’re trying to get a roster together that will be competitive. “When you do the hard work it pays off in March when the season kicks off.” Ish Sanders is returning for Sunbury. O’Connor back at Cannons By Tara Murray New Calder Cannons girl’s coach Matthew O’Connor was always keen to take on a main coaching role in the NAB League, but wasn’t expecting it to happen so soon. O’Connor, who has been involved with both the boys and girls programs previously at the Cannons, takes over the coaching role from Paul Tilley. He said he was humbled to be be considered the right person for the role. “It was always on the cards, as something I wanted to do one day,” he said. “It wasn’t the plan this year. “I was actually looking at a role with SSV [School Sport Victoria]. “I messaged the boys at the Cannons saying I needed a reference. There was a conversation about whether I had a bit of time and if I could help out there and I thought for maybe one night a week. “Russell Humphrey [female talent co-ordinator] rang me and asked me ‘would you like to be the head coach’. “I said I would have to speak to the wife and kids first and it went from there.” Last time O’Connor was at the Cannons he was a development and line coach for the girl’s side, having been involved with the boys’ Madden program before that. O’Connor has been involved with Greenvale’s junior girls program the past couple of years, including coaching. He said the growth of female football at the local level was massive. “It’s an exciting time for women’s football,” he said. “It’s really positive, all things to do with girls football. “The growth has been incredible and it brings families into local football clubs. In my area in the EDFL, there’s now under-11s, under-13s, under-15s and under-18s. Some clubs have two teams in age groups.” O’Connor returns to the Cannons program on the back of the side’s surprise grand final appearance this season. “They did an outstanding job making the grand final, after not really being in the top two teams at the end of the season, but they found a way to keep winning. “To make a grand final is pretty special. That’s two out of the three years, they’ve been in the last two.” O’Connor said only five or six players from this year weren’t in contention to be part of next year’s squad. Georgia Patrikios and Krstel Petrevski, were drafted, while others will look to play in the VFLW.

O’Connor said those coming up from the under-16 girls Conti squad were showing some really good signs. He said while a repeat of this season would be good results-wise, that wasn’t the main focus. “We want the girls to love footy and when
their time is finished at the Cannons they go onto their next club as better players and better people. “It’s not just about winning games, but being better than last time. It’s fun winning games but it’s not everything. If we have the right things in place, the wins will come.”

Cameron to coach again Wallan coach Chris Cameron will return as the Riddell District Netball League senior interleague coach next year. Cameron coached the side this year after being named league coach of the year in 2018. He had a successful introduction into the interleague program, with the RDNL claiming a one-goal victory against the Southern Netball League in the AFL Victoria WorkSafe Community Championships in May. AFL Goldfields netball manager Kim Bailey said they were thrilled to have someone of Cameron’s calibre involved for a second straight year. “We are very pleased to have such a person with the coaching credentials of Chris heading our interleague program again for 2020,” Bailey said. “He brings a wealth of knowledge with him and we are looking forward to some terrific results next year.” Cameron has been involved in the RDNL competition the past two years, during which he has re-established Wallan’s A-grade program. The side this year fi nished third, having pushed the two grand fi nalists through the fi nals series. Players who were named in the 2019 RDNL team of the year will automatically be invited to be part of next year’s interleague squad. Ryan medallist Stefanie Symes, Macedon’s Katie Clarke, Chloe WIlson, and Caitlyn Alifraco, Diggers Rest’s Anica Scherer, Rupertswood’s Prue Stanley, Tee Salanoa, Clare Johnson and Ailish McCormack, and Wallan pair Gemma Grimmond and Chloe Meulenmeesters were all part of the team of the year. Seven of those players were part of this year’s interleague team. There will be trials for the remaining spots. The team will compete in the Association Championships and also the Ariels tournament, where they claimed the open division title this year. Tara Murray
